Racism against South Asians: Hypocrisy of Vancouver Coastal Health and UBC authorities exposed by CTV reporter THANKS to CTV reporter Penny Daflos, the disgusting hypocrisy of Vancouver Coastal Health and UBC authorities has been exposed during a motor vehicle incident in downtown Vancouver involving Jason Faulds, a vascular surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital and a clinical instructor in the University of British Columbia, in which he told a South Asian man to “crawl back to Surrey.” Faulds was captured on a video that was posted to TikTok telling a man: “It’s no big deal, just get the f**k out of here, you can crawl back to Surrey.” Daflos found that although the video started circulating on social media early last spring, the incident apparently occurred much earlier because of the way Faulds was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt. Vancouver police confirmed they were called to Alberni Street in the 1100 block around 10 p.m. on July 18, 2020. And
Jason Faulds as seen on TikTok.
White doctor told South Asian man to “crawl back to Surrey” court records showed Jason Marc Faulds was charged for an incident on that date with impaired driving and

CTV found that his conviction came with a fine of $2,000, a victim surcharge fee of $300, as well as a six-month driving prohibition. This week, Daflos reported that Vancouver Coastal Health President and CEO Vivian Eliopoulos sent a memo to 14,000 VCH employees last week on Friday afternoon addressing the issue of the video and acknowledging she’d known about the incident for some time. CTV reported that Eliopoulos admitted she didn’t do enough after learning about the incident, apologizing to staff and including a statement of contrition from Faulds. Eliopoulos wrote: “I have been reflecting on our

Sikh societies of B.C. raise $100,000 to help in fight against COVID-19 in India
EIGHT Sikh societies of British Columbia raised $100,000 [about Rs 5.8 million] in a couple of months to support COVID-19 fighting efforts in India and work with the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) to manage their program in India. The societies are Akali Singh Sikh Society, Vancouver; Alberni Valley Gurdwara Society, Port Alberni; Bear Creek Punjab Culture Society, Surrey; Gurdwara Sahib Brookside, Surrey; Khalsa Diwan Society, Vancouver; Khalsa Diwan Society Sikh Temple, Victoria; Khalsa Diwan Society York Center, Surrey; and Sri Guru Ravidas Sabha, Burnaby. Malkiat Singh Dhami, President of Vancouver’s Khalsa Diwan Society (KDS), said that KDS, acting on behalf of the eight Sikh societies, have entered into an agreement with the DSGMC in accordance with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements. This agreement sets specific guidelines for expenditure, accounting and reporting back to KDS. Dhami said: “On behalf of all the societies involved in this fundraising, I want to thank the Sangat [congregation] who donated so generously to make it a success. Working together, we can accomplish any goals we set for ourself.”

“I am deeply ashamed of my behaviour.” Are you really? CONTINUED FROM 1 organizational commitments as it relates to a racist incident that occurred last year and was brought to my attention several months ago. The first step in our learning and healing is acknowledgement and, on behalf of VCH, I share my deepest apologies for the late response.” She also wrote: “As part of our antiracism work, we are learning how to have courageous conversations when people speak up and we will do better. I want to also recognize that our response to initial inquiries about the incident were inadequate. These events have opened up deep wounds that
continue to hurt South Asian people and we’re very sorry for the pain this has caused.” Faulds wrote at the end of the memo: “I would like to address my actions from last summer which were recently publicized. I am deeply ashamed of my behaviour and the harm that I caused and fully understand that many are rightly offended. I offer my sincerest apology to the individuals involved, the VCH community, the residents of Surrey and the entire South Asian community.” CTV reported that Faulds said in his statement: “My comments reflect a lack of sensitivity and arrogance which is inexcusable and inappropriate.” He
added: “I would like to assure you that long before this became a public issue, I began working diligently to improve and will continue to work towards that goal.” What utter nonsense and hypocrisy! CTV noted that it had made several attempts to contact Faulds for comment on the incident, but he did not respond. And when CTV first approached VCH and UBC on the case, both condemned his actions but wouldn’t say much more citing privacy law. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia would not discuss the matter at all with CTV. The apologies by Eliopoulos and Faulds are quite obviously anything but
sincere – they are FORCED! Yes, we all make mistakes. However, the fact remains that people usually say those things in their family and/ or friends’ circle or have some kind of simmering resentment. When under pressure or after having drinks or drugs, they end up exposing themselves. Obviously, this doctor and his friends and/or colleagues and/or relatives feel the same way about South Asians. Usually people are not really sorry – they are just AFRAID of losing their jobs or facing hate crime criminal charges or being sued. Let’s not be naïve about such racism. It’s not going away anytime soon!

On Tuesday night at around 8:30 p.m., Vancouver Police were called to the area of Main Street and Marine Drive for reports that a man pointed a gun at another man, threatened him and then went into his suite. Negotiations went on for hours, but were unsuccessful. Shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the VPD Emergency Response Team entered the room. The man was arrested and taken to jail. Charges related to pointing a firearm and uttering threats will be recommended, Constable Tania Visintin told The VOICE. “Thankfully there were no injuries to the suspect, the public or police,” she added. Anup Jubbal, who gave light to the world, gone from our sight WELL-KNOWN South Asian community activist and Rotarian Anup Singh Jubbal passed away on August 28. He was born in 1935 in Lucknow, India, and came to Canada in 1968 where he initially resided in Kamloops. He moved to the Greater Vancouver area in 1986. The desire to help others inspired Jubbal at a young age, drawing him to groups such as the Boy Scouts. During his time in India, he was a Saint John Ambulance attendant. He became a Rotary member in 1986. He raised large sums of money in 1988 for the Rotary International campaign to eradicate polio, a devastating disease that affects children in numerous countries. In 1989, Jubbal founded an organization committed to preventing blindness among impoverished citizens in rural India and dedicated his life to this noble cause for the past 32 years. Jubbal was the Founder, President and CEO of Canadian Eyesight Global originally named Project Eyesight-India, which was supported by Rotary International, Rotary Clubs in Canada and India, CRCID/CIDA Canada, local eye hospitals, and dedicated volunteers. Jubbal worked tirelessly to provide care for those in need. A vast number of people were treated for avoidable blindness, and thousands upon thousands of free cataract surgeries were performed in rural areas of India. He also organized numerous eye
care camps in Greater Vancouver and Toronto over the past 18 years. Jubbal organized booths at several Rotary International Conventions to promote efforts of Canadian Eyesight Global. Jubbal won numerous prestigious
awards and honours including: * “Meritorious Service Medal”, presented by Roméo LeBlanc, Governor General of Canada (1997) * “Distinguished Service Award” from the Rotary International
Global Polio Eradication Initiative, presented by John Fraser, Speaker of the House of Commons, Canada (1988) * Rotary International “Service Above Self Award”, presented by the President of Rotary International, Clifford Dochterman (1993) * “Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian Award”, presented by Paul Martin, Federal Minister of Finance, Canada (1998) * “Outstanding Community Service Award” of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (2005) There were several other awards and recognitions bestowed upon Jubbal over the years, and his work has been commended by many notable people, including Governors General of Canada, Prime Ministers of Canada, Premiers of BC, and other dignitaries. His work has been featured on radio and television, and in newspapers, magazines and social media. Canadian Eyesight Global will continue to carry his legacy of doing humanitarian work with support of his dedicated family, friends, and volunteers. He is survived by his wife Saroop Kaur Jubbal, five daughters (and sons-in-law), nine grandchildren, brothers and sisters and other relatives. His life was honoured on Friday, Sept. 3 at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta. Please donate to Canadian Eyesight Global in lieu of flowers at www.canadianeyesight.org
SURREY RCMP on Wednesday announced an ongoing sexual assault investigation and asked any additional witnesses to come forward. This investigation began in March, when Surrey RCMP received a report alleging that a woman was sexually assaulted while receiving a massage at Shri Professional Massage located at 1105 - 7360 137
Street. On June 22, 56-year-old Shri Rampol of Surrey was arrested on a warrant for sexual assault. The BC Prosecution Service approved a charge of sexual assault and he was released from custody by the court with conditions including not to perform any massages on any female clients or patients unless in the presence of a third party female
who has knowledge of his release conditions. Police believe that there may be additional witnesses in the community with information that may assist this investigation. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP at (604) 599-0502. They will be connected with officers from the Special Victims Unit.
“We know that it can be difficult for people to come forward and speak to police about sexual assaults,” said Constable Sarbjit Sangha, Media Relations Officer for Surrey RCMP. “We want to assure the people who come forward with information that if you need support through the investigation and court process, we can engage our Victim Services for assistance.”

Liberals move forward to get job done on vaccines, finish fight against COVID-19 A re-elected Liberal government will ensure everyone travelling on a plane, train, or cruise ship is vaccinated against COVID-19, Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau announced on Friday in Mississauga, Ontario. He said that Canadians know the best way to overcome this crisis is to get the COVID-19 vaccine. That’s why Canadians rolled up their sleeves to lead the world in vaccinations after the Liberal government secured enough doses for every eligible Canadian – two months ahead of schedule. But we have to keep moving for-
ward to keep Canadians safe and healthy from this virus. “Keeping Canadians safe and healthy requires true leadership – that’s why we’re making sure everyone on a plane, train, and cruise ship is vaccinated,” said Trudeau. “But Erin O’Toole says he wants to scrap that plan. He won’t even make sure his candidates are vaccinated when they come knocking on your doors. That’s not leadership - it’s the kind of backward thinking that will put our economy, and our future plans on hold that much longer.”
Justin Trudeau in Toronto on Wednesday. To keep Canadians safe and healthy and get the job done on vaccines, a re-elected Liberal government will: * Move forward with mandatory vaccinations for travellers on planes, trains, and cruise ships; * Introduce a COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination Fund to support provinces and territories who do the right thing and implement a requirement for proof-of-vaccine credentials for nonessential businesses and public spaces; and * Continue to procure enough vaccines to ensure all Canadians have access to free COVID-19 booster shots and second-generation vaccines as needed. “If we want to get back to normal and build a

better Canada, then we need to finish the fight against COVID-19,” said Trudeau. “Without strong leadership on vaccines, our kids won’t be safe in the classroom, our businesses won’t grow and thrive, and all Canadians will be at risk. In this important election, Canadians have a clear choice: move forward and finish the fight against COVID-19 by getting Canadians vaccinated, or let [Conservative Party Leader] Erin O’Toole take us backward. Let’s keep moving forward - for everyone.” (For more election announcements by Trudeau over the past week, visit our website voiceonline.com)

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole announces his plan to tackle gang violence CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Erin O’Toole on Friday in Montreal released his plan to tackle gang and gun violence and make communities safer. “Even during a pandemic, crime doesn’t take a break. Gun and gang violence has been on the rise in communities across the country, terrorizing families and communities,” said O’Toole. “Yet, rather than go after gang members and their networks, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have tried to make criminals out of farmers, hunters, and law-abiding firearms owners.” With Canada’s Recovery Plan, Canada’s Conservatives will focus on cracking down on gang violence and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. A Conservative government will bring in tougher laws and give police the resources they need to combat gang and gun violence across the country, including: * Amending the Criminal Code to make it easier for police and prosecutors to go after gang networks and prevent the import of illegal guns. * Partnering with the private sector on a Gang Exit Strategy to give gang members, especially
young recruits, a way out and a chance to start fresh. * Working with partner organizations across the country to develop and expand programs to keep youth out of gangs. * Mandating the automatic surrender of firearms to law enforcement where an individual has been charged with an offence. * Imposing a mandatory minimum sentence of two years on the unauthorized possession of a firearm if the person was the subject of a prohibition order or previously convicted of a firearms-related offence. * Supporting the CBSA and RCMP, and working closely with American authorities in the United States, to target smuggling operations before illegal guns reach the border. “I want our neighbourhoods – all neighbourhoods – to be vibrant, safe places to raise a family,” said O’Toole. “Only a Conservative government will take action to end gang violence and secure our streets.”

Jagmeet Singh will eliminate prescription drug costs, invest in health care AS part of the release of his Quebec platform, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Friday in Quebec City promised to reverse the cuts to health care started by the Conservatives and continued by Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau. He committed to restore federal healthcare funding and make health care stronger and more affordable with a commitment to bring in a national pharmacare program and hire more front-line workers. “Throughout this pandemic nurse, doctors and health care workers have made sacrifices to be there for Canadians when they were sick and dying. In our country’s darkest times, they were our heroes; now they are exhausted. We owe it to them to make our health care system stronger,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau promised to make life better for Canadians with universal drug coverage and an end to Harper’s cuts, but he voted against our plan to lower families drug costs. He won’t do it, but I will.” In 2011, the Harper Conservatives cut the an-
nual Canada Health Transfer increase in half. In 2015, Trudeau campaigned on a promise to inject more funding into the health care system with a commitment to implement universal pharmacare, but once he was in office he continued Harper’s cuts and abandoned his promise. But he barely mentions pharmacare in his platform and provides no funding for it. Singh pledged to end decades of Liberal and Conservative neglect with a commitment to reverse the health care cuts Canadians can get the care they need, when they need it. He promised to establish a national pharmacare program that would eliminate prescription drug fees for every Canadian. This commitment would save the provinces $4 billion a year in health care costs, and would save the average family $550 a year in medication costs. BCTF: ‘Talk to your kids about the importance of each one doing their part to keep everyone safe’ IN an open letter to parents from B.C. Teachers’ Federation President Teri Mooring on Wednesday urged parents to talk to their children and teens about the importance of each one doing their part to keep everyone safe, both in and out of schools. Mooring wrote: “September is a time of great excitement for students and their parents— but this year is different. The Delta variant is different. There is still excitement, but there is also uncertainty. “In recent weeks, we have heard unprecedented levels of concern and anxiety from many parents around the safety of our schools. We also recognize that, for others, COVID-19 still doesn’t feel like a significant threat. “But, given what we know about the highly transmissible variant, and that our students under 12 are ineligible to be vaccinated as a means of protection, we need to take a cautious approach when we return to school next week. The government has mandated maskwearing in schools for adults and students in Grades 4 and up, but that’s not enough to keep everyone safe. “Parents, we need your help to protect all students in BC’s K–12 learning environments. This means ensuring your child gets vaccinated if they are eligible and supporting a culture of mask-wearing for all students who are able, including those in Kindergarten to Grade 3. “We are also encouraging everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated. It’s important that everyone from all our communities in BC take this important step to help better protect those children who are not yet eligible for vaccinations. “We know there are students and staff members who, for various reasons, are exempt from wearing masks. There are also some learning situations where masks aren’t appropriate. Our school communities have a lot of experience making sure everyone is included and treated with respect. “Let’s foster kindness and consideration by talking to our children and teens about the importance of each of us doing our part to keep everyone safe, both in and out of schools. Though our own kids might have relatively strong immune systems, their classmates or teachers could have immunocompromised family members at home. “As the school year progresses, health authorities and school districts can make regional adjustments based on timely data about transmission in schools and their surrounding communities. Please join us in making sure your MLAs and school boards know that parents and teachers stand together in expecting regionally appropriate safety measures and transparent communication around in-school exposures and transmission data. “BC’s teachers care deeply about our students, your children, and are committed to
One dead following collision on Highway 17 on Thursday SURREY RCMP said that a 37-year-old man died following a collision between a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle that occurred on Thursday at 2:55 a.m. The collision occurred on Highway 17 between the 104 Avenue and 108 Avenue exits. While the cause of collision has not been determined, initial indications are that the passenger vehicle was pulled over on the side of the highway when it was struck by a westbound tractor-trailer. Impairment is not believed to be a factor. The driver remained at the scene and has spoken to police. He was not injured. The Surrey RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) have been deployed to the scene to conduct a full investigation.

TransLink and City of Richmond break ground on new Canada Line Station
CONSTRUCTION began on Thursday on a new Canada Line SkyTrain station that will help deliver better transit to the City of Richmond and the Capstan Village area. The future Capstan Station will provide efficient and environmentally sustainable rapid transit to a rapidly developing Richmond community. “Capstan Station will be the cornerstone of making Capstan Village centred around zero-emission, fast, and reliable transit,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This growing urban community is projected to bring up to 16,000 new residents to Richmond, and this new transit station will help position our city as an even more attractive place to live.” The Capstan Station will have these additional features compared to existing Canada Line stations: * Dual escalator sets * A larger concourse * Increased platform length and waiting space * Commercial retail space * Public art “Fast, frequent, reliable, and accessible transit is the best way to build strong communities,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “The new Capstan Station will be
built right in the heart of a growing community and will help make transit the number one transportation option for so many new and current residents of Capstan Village.” This $52 million investment is cost-shared primarily by the City of Richmond which raised $32 million from developers through voluntary contributions; and TransLink. Projected to open in 2023, the station will provide easier access to rapid transit between Bridgeport and Aberdeen stations. Quick Facts: * The City of Richmond and TransLink held a virtual open house in November 2020 to help determine the station’s final design. * Capstan Station is a unique funding arrangement between TransLink, the City of Richmond, and private developers to reduce burden to Metro Vancouver taxpayers. - This is the first funding partnership of its kind in TransLink’s history. * This is the second time TransLink has constructed an additional SkyTrain station to serve an in-operation SkyTrain line. - Lake City Way Station was completed after the Millennium Line opened.

Indian Consul General Manish meets with lead tech team of Lululemon
(Left to right): Parveen Mysore of Lululemon, Indian Consul General Manish, Vaidyanatha Seshan of Lululemon, and Consul (Commerce) Manjish Grover. Photo submitted THE Consul General of India in Vancouver, Manish, and Consul (Commerce) Manjish Grover last week met the lead tech team of Lululemon -- Vaidyanathan Seshan, Vice President (Global Analytics) at Lululemon, Seattle, and Praveen Mysore, Senior Director of Technology at Lululemon, Vancouver. Together, Seshan and Mysore form the tech team that will lead operations at the newly established Technology Center for Lululemon in Bengaluru, India. Lululemon Athletica Inc. is a premium yoga and
sports apparel brand based out of Vancouver and has grown to a market capital of around $52 billion in a short span. It has established itself in India with its first venture -- The India Technology Hub -- and registered itself as Lululemon India (Services) Pvt. Limited. Given the huge retail market in India and the country emerging as a reliable manufacturing hub, one wonders if Lululemon will take much time to follow their tech operations with manufacturing and retail.
Khushi Ram(second from left), a resident of Vancouver and a former officer in the Indian central government services, celebrated his 100th birthday on August 20. Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria sent special greetings from Ottawa which were delivered to him by Consul Manjish Grover (third from left) who met Ram to convey birthday wishes and many happy returns of the day. Ram had an illustrious career in the Indian Government, retiring in 1979. He arrived in Canada in 1986 and has been living in Vancouver ever since. Photo submitted
35-year-old man shot in Surrey ON Sunday, August 29, at approximately 3:230 a.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a male who had been shot in the 9100-block of 148 street. Police said the investigation is still in its early
stages, but initial indications are that this incident is targeted and there is no risk to the public. There is also no indication that this incident is related to the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict. Anyone with more information, including dashcam footage around the area of 9100-block of 148 Street between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file# 2021-131168.

Cleaning, dietary workers coming back in-house at B.C. hospitals “Previous government actions cut health-care wages, took away the jobs they relied on, and created a chain reaction of layoffs that saw women disproportionately affected – the largest such layoffs in Canada’s history.” [EDITOR’S NOTE: Premier John Horgan and the NDP deserve fulsome praise for this move after the condemnable actions of then-premier Gordon Campbell who so shamelessly and cruelly destroyed the lives of so many workers, many of whom were South Asians. That hated man — whom I slammed left, right and center for his blatant deceptions year after year — finally had to resign in disgrace. The BC Liberal MLAs — including South Asian MLAs — were too spineless to stand up to that ruthless politician. Only MLA Tony Bhullar had the guts to defy Campbell, who then destroyed his political career, using South Asian BC Liberals to sabotage his nomination for the next provincial election.] PEOPLE in acute care facilities will have more consistent, safe and stable patient care, now that government is bringing thousands of support service workers and services that were previously contracted out back to work directly for health authorities, after almost 20 years of these services being contracted to private companies, the Province announced on Monday. Beginning this fall, the Province will serve notice under the terms of 21 commercial service con-
tracts and start a phased approach to repatriating housekeeping and food-service contracts. The move will improve wages, working conditions, job security and stability for approximately 4,000 workers who rely on their jobs, and the countless patients that they help each day. By promoting a stable and effective workforce, government will be better positioned to offer attractive jobs options to people interested in joining the workforce. “Health-care workers rely on a committed and stable workforce to help them with their jobs, and this move also better protects support service workers in their positions,” said Premier John Horgan. “Previous government actions cut health-care wages, took away the jobs they relied on, and created a chain reaction of layoffs that saw women disproportionately affected – the largest such layoffs in Canada’s history. Nearly 20 years later, we are still living with the aftermath of those choices, with workers paid less to do the same work as their colleagues in the public system. It’s time to put a stop to it.” This move started with Bill 47 (Health Sector Statutes Repeal Act), which was brought into force through regulation on July 1, 2019. Bill 47 repealed two existing pieces of legislation – the Health and Social Services Delivery Improvement Act (Bill 29) and the Health Sector Partnerships Agreement Act (Bill 94), which facilitated contracting out in the health sector and caused significant labour impacts.

Pacific Center Mall groping
VANCOUVER Police want to speak with a woman who witnesses say was sexually assaulted by a man at Pacific Centre Mall last week. An employee working at the mall witnessed a man approach a woman from behind and grope her buttocks on August 27 around 5 p.m. The suspect then fled and mall security followed him while calling 911. Police were able to locate the suspect on a bus near Hastings and Abbott streets. “Our officers have identified a suspect, but need

John Horgan Photo: BC Government “Bill 47 was an important step in bringing basic fairness to public health care in our province,” said Adrian Dix, B.C.’s Minister of Health. “The repatriation of housekeeping and food services contracts is good for patients, for workers, for the health- care team and for recruiting future health-care workers. It treats those who do the essential and life-saving work of keeping our hospitals and facilities clean and ensuring the nutrition of our patients with fairness and dignity. There is always more to do, but I am very proud of these decisions and the value they place on public health care.” To address inequality and enhance working conditions for employees in health-care facilities, government is ensuring that workers have the benefits, wages and working conditions that they deserve to be able to help patients. Evidence has shown that employees who feel secure and safe in their jobs provide higher-quality care for people, and in turn employers can attract and retain
staff at a higher and more consistent level. “Having fought for the rights of workers, I understand how devastating it can be when these entitlements are taken away,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “Restoring these rights for thousands of health-care workers in B.C. is a step towards better wages, job security, and improved working conditions.” Government is currently working with the Hospital Employees’ Union, health authorities and contractors on a phased-in plan that allows employers to address this change in a way that strengthens and enhances the health system’s services. Meena Brisard, Secretary-Business Manager, Hospital Employees’ Union, said: “During this pandemic, we’ve seen just how critical these workers are to protecting patients and the public, but we’ve also seen how privatization has marginalized these workers within health care where they often work in the lowest-paid positions and are among those most at risk of infection. Reuniting the health-care team is the right thing for workers and patients. It ends the economic discrimination experienced predominantly by women and racialized people working within our health-care system, and it ensures greater worker and patient safety while improving retention rates.” Catalina Samson, dietary aide, Vancouver General Hospital, said: “Our work is important. The hospital doesn’t run without us and patients can’t recover without nourishing food or a clean environment. We’re a vital part of the team, and today I feel like our work is being recognized for that. Reuniting us with the rest of the health-care team is a great act of solidarity.”

to speak to the woman who was sexually assaulted to gather more information for Crown counsel to lay a charge,” said Constable Tania Visintin on Thursday. The suspect was taken to jail, then later released pending further investigation. “From speaking to mall patrons, we believe the assault took place near the escalator by American Eagle,” said Visintin. “We understand this would be a frightening experience. We are asking her to come forward and speak to investigators.”

NDP attacks Kevin Falcon on ‘sweet Little Mountain deal’ of affordable housing THE NDP on Tuesday launched yet another attack on BC Liberal Leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon, this time demanding that he explain why he supported a sweet deal with a private developer who evicted 700 people from their affordable homes in 2009 and has yet to deliver on a promise to build much-need housing in Vancouver. The CBC reported on the release of documents through Freedom of Information that revealed key details of a 2008 agreement signed by the former BC Liberal government where it sold the six-hectare Little Mountain social housing site to Holborn Properties. The NDP noted that under that agreement signed when Falcon was a senior cabinet minister, Holborn was allowed to demolish 224 affordable housing units and in return was to build 282 new social housing units in addition to constructing another 1,400 market homes on the site. Thirteen years after the agreement was signed, only about 53 units have been constructed and the site remains largely vacant at a time of chronic affordable housing shortages in Vancouver. Details of the agreement provide some of the reasons why things have gone so horribly wrong. * Holborn is required to pay $334 million for the site but the entire balance is not due until December 2031, nearly three decades after it made the deal. * To date Holborn still owes the government $240 million. * Holborn is only required to make payments after it has completed its market housing and is receiving revenue from those projects. * Holborn has been provided a loan of up to $88 million to build the social housing units that have
NDP back-to-school plan leaves questions unanswered and parents worried: BC Liberals AS students prepare to return to classrooms next week, the BC Liberals are calling on John Horgan and the NDP to respond to worried parents and teachers who have unanswered questions about B.C.’s back-to-school plan. “This should be an exciting time for students and their families, but it’s turned into an anxious time because the NDP’s back-to-school plan fails to give them the assurances they need as our province averages 685 new COVID-19 cases a day,” said MLA Shirley Bond, Interim Leader of the Official Opposition, on Thursday. “We continue to support the important work of public health officials and believe that parents deserve to have the same data on classroom exposures to assess their own family’s risk - as well as specific data on what work, if any, the government has done to improve ventilation in classrooms to combat the spread of the more infectious Delta variant.” Unlike last year, students and parents won’t automatically receive exposure notices. And when questioned about the progress of ventilation upgrades in schools, Horgan’s Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside provided only vague answers that rely on provincial averages because, troublingly, the NDP has no centralized information regarding the ventilation systems and requirements in B.C. schools. Families have also been criticizing the NDP for the lack of remote and hybrid learning options to accommodate immune-compromised children or in the event of an outbreak at a school. “Even with the added protection of vaccines there will still be COVID cases in B.C. schools, especially if no improvements have been made to ventilation in classrooms across the province. John Horgan needs to let the public know exactly what has been done at each school throughout the province to ensure children’s safety going forward. It’s overdue for the government to show their work,” added MLA Jackie Tegart, BC Liberal Education Critic. “British Columbians are asking for the resources, information, and assurances they need to have a safe and successful school year. With the first day of classes just around the corner, it’s time for the NDP to give parents, teachers, and students the answers they deserve.”
ers that don’t deliver on their commitments. MEANWHILE, former NDP MLA David Chudnovsky called on the government to establish a
public inquiry into the deal. He said: “How could this tragedy have happened? We need answers and we need them now.”

Local government matters in the 2021 federal election: Metro Vancouver WITH the Canadian federal election on the horizon, Metro Vancouver is shining a spotlight on the need to strengthen and financially support investments in critical infrastructure through its Local Government Matters platform. “Although pandemic response and economic recovery will continue to dominate the election discourse, we want to ensure the needs of local communities are also a part of the conversation,” said Sav Dhaliwal, Chair of the Metro Vancouver Board of Directors, on Thursday. “As we face national and global issues together, we must also consider our immediate context and make wise investments to ensure our communities have the foundation they need to thrive well into the future.” Launching Thursday, Local Government Matters 2021 gives residents and media a chance

ability, resilience and quality of life in the Metro Vancouver region. “Local infrastructure touches our lives every day, often invisibly, and it underlies the economic, environmental, and social well-being of the region,” said Linda Buchanan, Vice Chair of the Metro Vancouver Board of Directors. “Metro Vancouver is well positioned to address issues like local climate resilience, affordable housing, and ecological protection, but we can only succeed if there is equitable cost-sharing support from other orders of government.” Metro Vancouver has sent the major parties contesting the 2021 federal election six questions in three key issue areas: 1. Investments in critical infrastructure 2. Climate resiliency
3. Affordable housing The website localgovernmentmatters.ca will be updated regularly as responses are received in the weeks leading up to the federal election on September 20. Local Government Matters is a web-based, non-partisan initiative that builds on the importance of developing and maintaining an effective working partnership with the next federal government so that we can collaboratively and effectively address the complex issues facing the region. The initiative aligns closely with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ key priorities, including its call for the re-establishment of long-term and dedicated funding for water and wastewater infrastructure as a reliable, long-term contribution toward essential infrastructure.
When officers responded, they observed a gathering of people beyond the allowable 50 persons, few were wearing masks, and as a result of the large amount of people, physical distancing
was not possible. The event was also advertised on social media and a video of the party goers posted. Officers issued $5,000 in fines for hosting a non-compliant event.

Surrey’s newest supportive housing building opens in Guildford THE Baird Blackstone Building has officially opened its doors in Guildford, thanks to a partnership between the Province, City of Surrey and the Lookout Housing and Health Society. This new supportive housing building offers 61 airconditioned studio apartment units to people experiencing, or at-risk of, homelessness in the community. Baird Blackstone offers 24-7 support services such as meal programs and health and wellness supports, as well as a commercial kitchen, dining and lounge areas, storage and amenity space, and laundry and medical rooms. The building will be operated by the Lookout Housing and Health Society, which has also been managing a year-round shelter adjacent to the site since 2017. “Council is committed to ending the cycle of homelessness
Doug McCallum in our city, and that is why we were proud to provide the land for this project, valued at $1.3 million,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum on Wednesday. “I’d like to thank the Province and the Lookout Society in their partnership in making this project a reality, as we work to ensure that everyone has a dignified place to call home.” The Province, through BC Housing, provided approxi-
mately $16 million to the project through the Homelessness Action Plan and will provide an annual operating subsidy of $1.1 million. “These new homes with supports will give people experiencing homelessness in Surrey the chance to make a lasting change in their lives,” said Garry Begg, MLA for Surrey-Guildford. “We’re proud to work with partners like the City of Surrey to build more homes like these so that their benefits can extend to both residents and the surrounding community.” “Lookout Society is excited to operate the new Baird Blackstone Building that will provide safe and affordable homes for some of Surrey’s most vulnerable individuals,” said Shayne Williams, CEO of Lookout Housing and Health Society. “This supportive housing will
offer tenants the opportunity to build stability and improve their quality of life. We thank the Province of BC, BC Housing and the City of Surrey for their leadership in making this supportive housing possible.” The Baird Blackstone Building is the third supportive housing project in Surrey that has been opened so far in 2021
and is part of a commitment between the Province and the City of Surrey to deliver 250 permanent supportive modular homes to replace the temporary sites in the community. In addition, another supportive housing building, Green Timbers, is expected to open this fall, while the Rosewood in Whalley is anticipat-
ed to be completed in spring 2022. In partnership with the Government of Canada, the Province and Atira Women’s Resource Society, a 44-unit housing project is under development, offering secure housing for women. Located in North Surrey, this housing project will open in March 2022.

More than 1,000 British Columbians lost to toxic illicit drugs in first half of 2021 Drug toxicity is now leading cause of death in B.C. for those aged 19 to 39
AT least 1,011 lives were lost to suspected illicit drug toxicity in B.C. between January and June 2021, according to data released by the BC Coroners Service. “The deaths of more than 1,000 British Columbians in the first six months of 2021 is a tragic reminder that the toxic illicit drug supply remains a significant ongoing threat to public health and safety in communities throughout our province,” said Lisa Lapointe, Chief Coroner, BC Coroners Service, on Tuesday. “The data released today highlights the immensity of this public health emergency and the need for a wide-scale response. This includes removing barriers to safe supply, ensuring timely access to evidencebased affordable treatment and providing those experiencing problematic substance use with com-
passionate and viable options to reduce risks and save lives.” In June, 159 British Columbians died as a result of drug toxicity, the ninth consecutive month in which at least 150 British Columbians died as a result of the toxic drug supply. The total number of lives lost between January and June is the highest recorded in the first six months of a calendar year. Drug toxicity is now the leading cause of death in B.C. for those aged 19 to 39 and is second in terms of reducing total potential years of life. As with previous months, the illicit drug supply in B.C. is both variable and increasingly toxic, with extreme fentanyl concentrations and carfentanil showing up more frequently in toxicology testing. Post-mortem testing shows that fentanyl continues to be the substance involved in most
drug-toxicity deaths – 85% in the first six months of 2021. Cocaine, methamphetamine and etizolam are also present in significant numbers of deaths. Data confirms, as it has throughout this public health emergency, that illicit substances are driving this health crisis. Prescribed safe supply is not playing a role in the ongoing drug-toxicity crisis. “Today is International Overdose Awareness Day; a day in which we remember and mourn the family members, friends and neighbours we’ve lost to drug toxicity,” Lapointe said. “To the thousands of B.C. families grieving the loss of a beloved family member, I extend my heartfelt condolences and my hope that the stories you’ve shared will continue to influence positive change. Those who died mattered and their loss is felt deeply, and we must con-

Jagmeet Singh pandemic has made it worse,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau says he’s a friend to young people, but while he helped billionaires get richer and bailed out big corporations, he kept collecting interest and forcing students to make payments during the worst moments of the pandemic. We fought for supports for students, and won, and we will continue to fight for a more affordable, more fair, and more optimistic future.”
The NDP said that in the midst of the pandemic, Singh fought and won supports for students. On Saturday, he pledged to forgive up to $20,000 of student loan debt, remove interest from federal loans, and double federal student grants. He also committed to giving new graduates a fiveyear head start before without having to make any federal loan payments. “When Justin Trudeau promised to help students, he used the opportunity to hand a $900 million contract to his friends at WE,” said Singh. “When banks and big corporations asked for help, Justin Trudeau rushed billions of dollars to them with no strings attached. Rising student debt should be something a prime minister wants to fight – not cash in on. I’m not Justin Trudeau. I will stand up for students and forgive student debt so they can have a better head start for a brighter future.” Singh said Trudeau’s government has charged Canadians more than $4 billion in interest on student loans. And, under his watch, more than half of university graduates in Canada now carry student debt, with the average loan hitting $28,000.

Canada’s Conservatives commit to Surrey Langley SkyTrain project CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Erin O’Toole on Wednesday announced that a Conservative government will commit to the Surrey Langley SkyTrain project and other key infrastructure priorities in the Lower Mainland. “Canada’s Conservatives have been fighting the Trudeau government’s delays on critical projects like the SkyTrain extension to Langley and the George Massey tunnel,” said O’Toole. “A Conservative government will deliver on these shovel-ready projects to create good jobs and improve the lives of people in these fast-growing communities.” With Canada’s Recovery Plan, a Conservative government will immediately prioritize the construction of the Surrey Langley SkyTrain project, which will extend the Expo Line 16 kilometres from Surrey’s King George SkyTrain station along the Fraser Highway to 203 Street in Langley. The project will increase line capacity, reduce travel times and congestion, and increase access to job opportunities and housing for commuters. A Conservative government will also deliver on the following projects: * Replacement of the George Massey tunnel * Construction of the new Vancouver Jewish Community Centre * Construction of the new Holdom Avenue Overpass
Erin O’Toole * White Rock Pier repairs and upgrades A Conservative government will also work with the province, municipalities, and First Nation communities across British Columbia to invest in infrastructure projects based on their local priorities.
“I am proud to support these important projects as part of our plan to secure the future and improve the lives of British Columbians with Canada’s Recovery Plan,” said O’Toole. “Together, we will build the world-class public transit and transportation networks the Lower Mainland needs to recover and thrive, and get every part of the region moving again.” O’Toole also said that instead of building the modern infrastructure needed for growing communities across Canada, the Trudeau Liberal government sat on billions of unspent infrastructure dollars and waited months to step up as a full funding partner for nationally significant projects. Canada’s Conservatives will also be partners on key projects across the country like Ontario’s GTA transit plan, Quebec City’s Third Link, and the Calgary Green Line. Through Canada’s Recovery Plan, Canada’s Conservatives will immediately unlock those unused dollars and invest in shovel-ready projects that will put Canadians to work, cut
commute times, and clean up the environment. Under the infrastructure plan, Canada’s Conservatives will also: * Provide more flexibility to municipalities and First Nations by removing onerous requirements to receive federal infrastructure funding. * Scrap the failed Canada Infrastructure Bank and commit the money sitting unused on its books to infrastructure projects that can strengthen our economy. * Reprioritize the Investing in Canada Plan toward infrastructure projects that would have the maximum benefit for economic recovery. * Build digital infrastructure to connect all of Canada to high-speed Internet by 2025. “Our infrastructure investments are pivotal to rebuilding our economy and making life easier for Canadians,” said O’Toole. “Only Canada’s Conservatives have a plan to build infrastructure faster and create good jobs for Canadians to fuel our recovery.”

“Block Watches play an important role in neighbourhoods by encouraging community safety and engagement,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “We know that clean communities provide a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone, and I encourage all of Surrey’s Block Watches to come together for this friendly challenge, which also gives residents the opportunity to reconnect with their neighbours.” As part of the Love Where You Live Campaign, residents can organize and register neighbourhood clean-ups. The City of Surrey will support by picking up large and hazardous items, and arranging for the quick pick-up of any collected litter. Groups will also be provided clean-up equipment that includes litter pickers, bags and safety vests. This program is available to all residents, businesses, and schools. For residents who do not represent a Block Watch group, organized clean-ups can be registered and entered into a monthly draw for a Family Backyard BBQ Prize Pack. Liberals move forward to end plastic pollution and reduce waste A re-elected Liberal government will move forward to end plastic pollution by 2030 and reduce waste, while creating jobs and growing the middle class, the Liberal Party announced on Saturday. The Liberal Party said that every year, we throw out enormous amounts of plastic worth billions of dollars. Since only nine per cent of the plastic we throw out in Canada gets recycled, we lose the potential value that recycled plastic could add to our economy. Improving the way we manage plastic in Canada, through recycling and reusing, is a huge opportunity to create up to 42,000 middle class jobs, continue growing the economy, and building on our strong record of protecting the environment. “The Liberal government has taken strong action to cut plastic waste – including through a ban on harmful single-use plastics and measures to improve recycling,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, Liberal candidate for North Vancouver. “We need to build on these actions, end plastic pollution, and create good jobs for Canadians.” “Canadians are tired of plastic littering our oceans, lakes, rivers, and lands – and harming the ecosystems that are home to invaluable wildlife and marine life,” said Bernadette Jordan, Liberal candidate for South Shore—St. Margarets. “Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down. This pollution will not only outlive us, it will outlive our children and grandchildren. We have to take bold action now to end plastic waste and protect our environment for future generations.” A re-elected Liberal government would continue to cut waste and create jobs by:
Justin Trudeau * Ending plastic pollution by 2030; * Collecting and recycling more plastic beverage bottles, in collaboration with the provinces and territories; * Requiring all plastic packaging to be 50 per cent recycled plastic by 2030, in collaboration with the provinces and territories; * Making producers responsible for recycling plastic waste, in collaboration with the provinces and territories; * Creating a new fund to support made-in-Canada solutions to plastic waste; * Expanding programs to clean up our oceans and coasts, like the successful Ghost Gear Pro-

gram which collects lost and abandoned fishing gear and oceans plastic; and * Extending the lives of our appliances and cutting waste by implementing a “right to repair” for Canadian household appliances. This builds on previous measures the Liberals took to end plastic pollution and grow the clean economy: * Banning certain, harmful single-use plastics, based on science; * Developing a comprehensive plan to cut plastic waste and take advantage of the economic opportunity it presents; * Leading the world to take action on plastic pollution together; and * Doing more to fight pollution and address climate change than any other government in Canadian history, including ensuring it is no longer free to pollute anywhere in the country and protecting historic amounts of our nature.
“The environmental crisis calls for all sectors of society to be mobilized,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Liberal candidate for Compton–Stanstead. “The right to repair is a great opportunity for all of us to have our appliances repaired at an affordable price, reduce the pressure on our natural resources, and reduce waste production. It’s a concrete example of the development of a new economic sector in line with our environmental responsibilities, which will create jobs and promote local economies.” Canadians want their governments to urgently address the problem of plastic pollution, but Erin O’Toole and the Conservatives want to take us backward by reversing our ban on harmful single-use plastics. This will result in more plastic in our environment and less jobs for Canadians. The Liberals are the only team delivering real action to cut pollution and build a cleaner future. We have to keep moving forward – for everyone.

Delta Police using drone to target street racing

DELTA Police Department said on Tuesday that it is using a new tool to help address the issue of street racing – a concern brought forward on a number of occasions by residents. Recently the DPD Traffic Section put up a drone to help spot street racing taking place on Tsawwassen First Nation lands and in the area of Highway 17. “The drone allows our officers to have fantastic visibility over a wide area, as well as zoom in on offender’s license plates,” said Acting Sgt. Grayson Smith, Head of the Delta Police Traffic Section. “Instead of trying to pull over these drivers going at high speeds, the drone operator follows them, and officers who are strategically placed can make these stops when safe to do so.” During the enforcement effort on August 26, police impounded one vehicle travelling at 157 km/ hr in a 80 km/hr zone. The driver was served a ticket for excessive speed, and the vehicle impounded for seven days. Excessive speeding tickets have a cost that goes well beyond the fine. In addition to the $368-483 fine, impound and tow fees, this ticket adds three
https://youtu.be/-Nx-L7_D68I points to someone’s driving record, and a driver risk premium is added to insurance costs. Police issued speeding tickets, and also conducted a number of inspections of vehicles. They towed a vehicle for being mechanically unfit after being modified for street racing. “Using the drone in this manner was definitely productive. We’ll be making use of it for future enforcement initiatives of this nature,” said Smith. “We wanted to release this footage to put a certain type of driver on notice – your reckless driving won’t be tolerated.”

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told to placate ministers who are upset ON a mission to resolve the internal feud that has been brewing within the Congress, the party’s general secretary in-charge, Harish Rawat, met Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, at his farmhouse in Siswan on Wednesday, even as the latter pressed for a rejig in his Cabinet. Amarinder, during the meeting, apparently handed over a proposed list for a Cabinet reshuffle. It is learnt that Amarinder Singh told Rawat that he wanted to drop two ministers from the Cabinet — Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Housing, Water Resources, Mines and Geology Minister, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria. Both the ministers are among a list of four who have launched a rebellion against the Amarinder Singh. Amarinder also allegedly proposed to Rawat that he wants Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Rana Kanwarpal Singh, inducted into the Cabinet and hand over the important departments of water resources, mining and geology to his aide, Rana Gurmeet Sodhi. Rana Sodhi is the Sports Minister and has been the main trouble-shooter of Amarinder Singh. The mining department is considered a plum portfolio in the state. Sources said that Rawat apparently told Amarinder Singh that such kind of reshuffle may not be possible as it would look like witch-hunting and create more trouble for the Congress in the state. Sources said that Amarinder had earlier proposed the removal of Technical Education Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi, also but he
had “changed his mind” about him now. In a meeting that went on for about five hours, the Amarinder Singh briefed Rawat — in the presence of Deputy General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta, Advocate General Atul Nanda, Special Task Force chief Harpreet Sidhu, and other officials — on several issues that were raised by Congress Punjab in-charge Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday. After taking a briefing from the officials, Rawat had a one-on-one meeting with the Chief Minister and is said to have asked him to placate the rebel ministers. After meeting Amarinder Singh, Rawat told the media that he had spoken to the former about the ministers who were upset with him. “Maine CM sahib ko unki narazagi ke baare mein bataya. Ab yeh CM ke upar hai ke who mantriyon ki naraazagi kaise door karte hain. (I have told the CM that some ministers are upset. Now, it is up to the CM as to how he placates them,” Rawat said. He said he discussed a number of
issues, including the controversial Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), drugs, transport and sacrilege, with Amarinder Singh. Toeing Amarinder Singh’s line on power agreements, Rawat said that not all 122 PPAs can be cancelled. “These are tripartite agreements. These are not like water agreements that can be annulled. There are private thermal plants, state government and the Centre.” At the same time, he said, the government should make electricity cheaper for people of the state by working on some points. On the issue of sacrilege, he said that it was a very sensitive matter. “The High Court has quashed the SIT and its report. The government should fulfil its promise made to the people of the state.” Rawat said the state was involved in a “big fight” against drugs but several party members wanted that the STF report, lying in an envelope in the High Court, should be opened and the government should make efforts towards the same. He said that Punjab had taken
a good stand on the Centre’s farm laws. After Punjab negated these laws in the Assembly, several other states had taken a cue and followed suit, he said. While Rawat met Navjot Sidhu and Amarinder Singh during his two-day visit to Chandigarh, rebel ministers Sukhjinder Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Charanjeet Channi and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria refused to meet him. The four ‘rebel’ ministers had met Rawat in Dehradun a few days ago. After the meeting, Rawat had come out in support of Amarinder Singh saying that the latter will lead the party’s campaign in the next elections, upsetting the ministers. After meeting Rawat on Tuesday, Congress’ Punjab chief Navjot Sidhu left for Delhi and is likely to meet AICC general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi, on Thursday. The Punjab government has scheduled a meeting of 10-member coordination committee between the PPCC and the government on Thursday. Amarinder is the chairman of the committee. Sidhu is likely to skip the first meeting. Sources close to him said that Sidhu did not want to attend any meeting that was being chaired by Amarinder Singh. Meanwhile, Sidhu’s strategic advisor and former DGP Mohd Mustafa also met Rawat and told the media that he had given a piece of “advice” to Rawat that had the potential to end the crisis in the Congress in Punjab. He said every Congressman wanted that the Congress should form the government again in the state. “We all want that to happen and we are working towards that,” he said.

Certain sections of media communalise everything, says India’s Chief Justice CHIEF Justice of India N.V. Ramana on Thursday said certain sections of the media communalised everything and this would ultimately result in giving the country a bad name. The remark from the CJI came while hearing petitions highlighting how some media outlets aired communal content linking the spread of the coronavirus to a Tablighi
Jamaat meet held at Nizamuddin in Delhi. People being evacuated from the Tablighi Jamaat centre in the Nizamuddin area of Delhi on March 31, 2020. “The problem is, everything in this country is shown with a communal angle by a section of media. … The country is going to get a bad name ultimately,” Chief Justice Ramana, heading a three-judge Bench,
observed orally. The hearing witnessed Chief Justice Ramana upbraid the lack of accountability on the part of social media platforms. The CJI said social media platforms only responded to “powerful people,” while complaints made by ordinary people, institutions and judges over content were ignored. “These web channels, Twitter, Facebook,
YouTube... They never respond. There is no accountability. About the institution they write badly and then they do not respond... This is the condition of institutions, forget individuals... They consider only people who are powerful. Institutions, common man, judges, they do not... This is the reality,” Chief Justice Ramana noted.
Lok Sabha without a Deputy Speaker for 830 days WITH the Delhi High Court asking the Central government on Wednesday to explain its stand on a petition that claimed that keeping the post of Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha vacant is a violation of Article 93 of the Constitution, the issue is once again in the spotlight. Petitioner Pawan Reley pointed out that the position had been vacant for the last 830 days. Congress’s floor leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, “It is a constitutionally mandated position and not a ceremonial one. During each session, the Congress has demanded that the election to the post be held, but our demands have been ignored”. Senior TMC leader Derek O’ Brien pointed out that the longest time that this post had remained vacant was in the 12th Lok Sabha, and even then on the 59th sitting of Parliament, election to the
post was held. “Modi-Shah is dismantling every institution, including Parliament. We have been screaming ourselves hoarse. Angry. Sad,” he said. Congress Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha Kodikunnil Suresh said that by convention, this post went to the Opposition. “During the Budget Session of Parliament, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla contracted Covid-19. The panel of chairpersons are not equipped to handle the job,” he noted. As of now, there are nine members who are part of the Panel of Chairpersons from the BJP, DMK, YSR Congress, BJD, TMC and the Revolutionary Socialist Party. A Deputy Speaker enjoys the same legislative powers as the Speaker. And in the absence of the Speaker because of death, illness or any other reason, the Deputy Speaker also assumes the administrative powers.

Soon after the 2019 general election, the government had made some effort to fill the position. It approached the YSR Congress, who turned down the offer since it would have been difficult to align their protest against the government for not according special status to Andhra Pradesh while occupying the post. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and his Deputy in the Lok Sabha Arjun Ram Meghwal were both not available for their comment. Birla had said that it is for the House to elect a Deputy Speaker and it’s not the Speaker’s job. BJD MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, who is a member
of the Panel of Chairpersons, said the Lok Sabha functioning was not affected by lack of a Deputy Speaker. “Currently, the Maharashtra Assembly is functioning without an elected Speaker after the resignation of Nana Patole,” he pointed out. As the combined Opposition did not have the strength to elect a member of their choice, the choice fell on the government. The fact that there was no recognised leader of the Opposition also hampered the process, he stated. In 1984, when Rajiv Gandhi came to power with an overwhelming majority, the Deputy Speaker’s position was given to the AIADMK, he noted.
Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzada to be named Afghanistan’s Supreme Leader THE Taliban’s top religious leader Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzada will be named as Afghanistan’s supreme authority, a senior member of the group has said. “Consultations are almost finalised on the new government, and the necessary discussions have also been held about the cabinet,” Mufti Inamullah Samangani, a senior official in the Taliban’s information and culture commission, said on Wednesday. He said the group is all set to announce the formation of the new government in Kabul in the next three days. In the new set-up, 60-year-old Mullah Akhundzada will be the Supreme Leader of the Taliban government, which will follow the pattern of the Iranian leadership. In Iran, the supreme leader is the highest political and religious authority of the country. He ranks above the president and appoints the heads of the military, the government, and the judiciary. The supreme
leader has final say in the political, religious and military affairs of the country. “Mullah Akhunzada will be the leader of the government and there should be no question on this,” he said, indicating that the president will work under his oversight. Mullah Akhunzada is the top religious leader of the Taliban and has been serving at a mosque in Kachlaak area of Balochistan province for 15 years.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani passes away in Srinagar
climbed down on Islamabad’s traditional stand on Kashmir and proposed a fourpoint formula to resolve the Kashmir issue. Born on September 29, 1929, at Zurmanz, a village on the banks of the Wular lake in Bandipore, Geelani rose to become the face of separatist politics.
THE patriarch of separatist politics in the Valley and hardline Hurriyat hawk, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, passed away at his residence in Srinagar late Wednesday night. A former elected legislator, the ailing 92-year-old had been under house detention for more than a decade. His death comes when both his and the moderate factions of the Hurriyat are in disarray in the wake of a crackdown by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the abrogation of Article 370 and the downgrade of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. Apprehensive that his funeral may attract large crowds, the security establishment has imposed restrictions across the Valley, including Internet suspension. Police sources say curfew would be imposed. “With shock and grief, we inform (you) that the father of revolution Syed Ali Geelani passed away tonight,” tweeted Geelani’s Pakistan-based representative Abdullah Geelani. “As per his will, he would be buried at the martyrs’ cemetery in Srinagar. The timing of the funeral would be announced later.” Geelani’s legacy will be that of the hardliner who stood up to New Delhi, seeking resolution of the Kashmir dispute under the aegis of the United Nations. In fact, he was the only separatist leader to oppose Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf when the latter
A school teacher, he started his political career under the tutelage of Maulana Mohammad Sayeed Masoodi, a senior National Conference (NC) leader, but soon moved to Jamat-e-Islami. The socio-religious organisation stood up to the NC leadership and saw Kashmir as an “unfinished agenda” of Partition. Geelani’s electoral career started from Sopore, a traditional separatist and Jamat stronghold. He first contested the Assembly elections in 1972, and represented Sopore in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for three terms. The last term ended abruptly in 1987 when militancy erupted in Kashmir.
Geelani had been one of the four candidates of the Muslim United Front (MUF) — an alliance of political, social and religious organisations — who won in the widely rigged 1987 elections that brought the NCCongress combine to power and set off militancy in the Valley. An ardent supporter of armed struggle for resolution of the Kashmir issue, Geelani was among the seven executive members of the Hurriyat Conference when it was formed in 1993. But his support for militancy and unwavering ideology on Kashmir sowed the seeds of discord between him and his colleagues in the Hurriyat Conference, finally culminating in a split in 2003. In 2004, Geelani also parted ways from Jamat-e-Islami when it distanced itself from militancy, and formed his own political outfit, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. While Geelani had been bedridden for years, he sprang a surprise on June 30 last year when he dissociated himself from the faction of Hurriyat that he founded. He left the reins to his deputy Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, who died in custody in Jammu jail earlier this year. And though Geelani said he wanted the resolution of the Kashmir issue as per the
23
aspirations of the people, he himself was an ardent supporter of its merger with Pakistan. Last year, the Pakistan government awarded him with Nishan-e-Pakistan, the highest civilian honour of the country. The NIA, which has till date arrested 18 separatist leaders from Kashmir including those from the Hurriyat in a case of terror funding, has alleged that they received funds from Pakistan to foment unrest in the Valley. The agency had even named Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq in the chargesheet, claiming they had been pushing for secession and fuelling unrest but had stopped short of naming them as accused. In February, 2019 the NIA had raided Umer Farooq’s and Geelani’s son Naseem Geelani’s house among others in the case. In March 2019, the Enforcement Directorate had levied a penalty of Rs 14.40 lakh [Rs 1.44 million] on Geelani in a 17-year-old case of alleged illegal possession of $10,000 in alleged contravention of the foreign exchange law. Former chief minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti condoled Geelani’s demise, saying, “We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness and standing for his beliefs.” People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone tweeted: “Heartfelt condolences to the family of Syed Ali Shah Geelani sahib. Was an esteemed colleague of my late father. May Allah grant him Jannat”. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said the country will observe official mourning and the country’s flag will fly half mast. Geelani had struggled “all his life for his people & their right to self determination”, Khan said.
Long-COVID now forces hospitals to offer rehabilitation program MEDICAL care facilities across the country are now offering rehabilitation programmes for COVID-survivors, with the hospitals continuing to report cases of Long-COVID while India is registering a downward trend of new COVID cases. The most common symptoms reported include muscle weakness/fatigue, sleep problems, and hair loss though hospitals are also seeing cases of COVID-related development of tuberculosis and fungal pneumonia, and cases of increased heart
rate, especially among those between 30-65 years. The rehabilitation programme includes physiotherapy, psychological counselling, pulmonologist consultation, and lung function tests. Dr. Akshay Budhraja, Pulmonologist, Aakash Healthcare, said: “We are seeing issues with those over 30 years and aggravated complaints among the elderly.’’ A study published recently in medical journal Lancet, titled “1-year outcomes in hospital survivors with COVID-19: A longitudinal
cohort study,’ -- conducted among COVID survivors in Wuhan, the epicentre of the first coronavirus outbreak in China -- found that a number of survivors continued to have lower health status a year after symptom onset. “Survivors continued suffering from at least one post-COVID medical complication even a year after COVID. While most survivors returned to their original work and life, the baseline health status of some continued to be lower,’’ said the study, which followed

the cases of 1,276 patients admitted at the Jin Yin-tan Hospital in Wuhan over one year. G.S. Chabbra, director, Respiratory Medicine, QRG Hospital, Faridabad, said while admissions due to Long COVID have slowed down now, the hospital has been in constant touch with their patients via tele-medicine and the hospital app. “After the second wave we did have patients with complaints of hair fall, episodes of breathlessness, and joint and muscle pain, which are typical symptoms of post-COVID patients,’’ he said.

India, Taliban make first official contact after last US troops leave Afghanistan HOURS after the last US military aircraft flew out of Kabul to mark the end of its 20-year war in Afghanistan, India made its first official contact with the Taliban when its ambassador to Qatar met the head of the Taliban political office in Doha Tuesday. Announcing the meeting, the Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement, said: “Today, Ambassador of India to Qatar, Deepak Mittal, met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, the Head of Taliban’s Political Office in Doha. The meeting took place at the Embassy of India, Doha, on the request of the Taliban side.” “Discussions focused on safety, security and early return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan. The travel of Afghan nationals, especially minorities, who wish to visit India also came up,” it said. “Ambassador Mittal raised India’s concern that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for antiIndian activities and terrorism in any manner. The Taliban representative assured the Ambassador that these issues would be positively addressed,” the MEA said. Mittal was Joint Secretary (Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran) in the MEA before he handed charge
to J P Singh in 2020. India’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Rudrendra Tandon, was also JS (PAI) before Mittal. Singh, Tandon and Mittal have been playing key roles in shaping India’s response to the situation in Afghanistan. Mittal accompanied Singh to several meetings in Doha where they had recently met Afghanistan leader Abdullah Abdullah before Kabul fell to the Taliban on August 15. The meeting between Mittal and Stanekzai, the first time any contact has been made public, took place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting the evolving situation in Afghanistan, directed that a high-level group comprising External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval and senior officials focus on India’s immediate priorities. Sources said this group, which has been meeting regularly over the last few days, is “seized of issues pertaining to the safe return of stranded Indians, the travel of Afghan nationals (especially minorities) to India, and assuring that the territory of Afghanistan is not used in any manner for terrorism directed against India”. The group has also been monitoring the ground
situation in Afghanistan and international reactions, including the resolution passed early Tuesday by the UN Security Council. The meeting in Doha followed Stanekzai’s statements over the weekend. He said India is “very important for this subcontinent” and his group wants to continue Afghanistan’s “cultural”, “economic”, “political” and “trade ties” with India “like in the past”. He made these remarks in a carefully scripted statement which he read in Pashto in a 46-minute video message broadcast Saturday on Taliban social media platforms and Afghanistan’s Milli TV. Given that Pakistan holds the levers to the Taliban, and has always described India’s ties with Afghanistan as a “negative” influence, this is significant. It is also the first categorical statement directed at India by a senior leader of the Taliban since they captured Kabul on August 15. Last Sunday, it was reported that the UN Security Council, with India as its president for the month of August, dropped a reference to the Taliban from a paragraph in its statement asking Afghan groups not to support terrorists
“operating on the territory of any other country”. Stanekzai had made similar overtures in 1996, after the Taliban’s first takeover of Kabul, when he was Deputy Foreign Minister of a caretaker regime. But at that time, India had not met them or responded and the Taliban faced international isolation. This time, his statements came after India evacuated its entire Indian diplomatic contingent from the embassy in Kabul. Over the last two weeks, Taliban spokespersons Suhail Shaheen and Zabiullah Mujahid have also spoken on relations with India. South Block, which is tracking these statements carefully, saw this as the Taliban’s first outreach to India since the group captured power. A wary Delhi will, however, wait and watch for demonstrable behaviour on the ground in Afghanistan, including the Taliban’s treatment of Afghans who have worked with India. Officials have pointed out that the Taliban did cooperate during the arrangement of a safe passage for the evacuation of Indian diplomats and nationals and Afghans from Kabul.

ology are leaving the party. Sharma told IANS that in election season many people from one party join the other and for them self interest is more important than ideology. “It is really saddening when someone leaves the party but when ideology becomes smaller in front of self interest these things happen. For them, self interest is the only priority and they have no commitment to any ideology and they shift their political affiliation as per their convenience in election season,” Sharma said. When asked about why they left the party, Sharma said that narazgi (unhappiness) over issues can be addressed but it is difficult to resolve when reasons for unhappiness are created to show everything is not in order in the party. “If anyone has personal issues and grievances against me, there is a proper mechanism to resolve it in our system. There are three in-charges and the party president to address people’s grievances if there are any. But when reasons to leave the party are created it will be difficult to
address,” he said. Sharma said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers are serving the nation and people under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will continue to do the same. “Those who want to serve the people and nation without any self-interest are still doing so by remaining in the party,” he said. Recently several BJP leaders including former minister Anil Joshi have joined other parties. In July, the BJP expelled Joshi from the party for six years after he criticized the central and state leadership for mishandling the ongoing farmers’ agitation. It is learnt that ahead of next year’s Punjab assembly polls, many BJP leaders are planning to change their political affiliation. “It is true that a few people including some senior leaders have left the BJP to join the opposition parties in recent times. And we are in touch with everyone and also had words with those who have already left. We are addressing the concerns but it is difficult to address when reasons are not based on issues,” he said.

Amarinder Singh contradicts Rahul Gandhi on Jallianwala Bagh renovation New Delhi/Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has contradicted former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the Jallianwala Bagh renovation issue. This could spark another round of controversy in the Punjab unit of the Congress which is already battling factionalism. Amarinder Singh when asked said, “I do not know what has been removed, it looks very nice to me.” The statement is contrary to Rahul Gandhi who on Tuesday joined the outrage on social media over the renovation. Rahul Gandhi said that he will not tolerate disrespect of the martyrs. In a tweet in Hindi on Tuesday Rahul Gandhi said, “Disrespect to Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs will be done by those who do not know the meaning of martyrdom. I am the son of a martyr and will not tolerate disrespect at any cost. I am against this cruelty.”
The social media is saying that the government has erased history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the memorial on Saturday. In Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on April 13, 1919, General Reginald Dyer ordered firing on a peaceful protest against the arrest of two nationalist leaders. Hundreds of Indians were killed that day when British soldiers blocked all exits and started firing on them. In the renovation, the walls of the narrow lane through which General Dyer led his troops to the Bagh have been embossed with sculptures. The points of entry and exit to the Bagh have also been changed. Professor of Global and Imperial History Kim A. Wagner first posted a picture on Twitter on Saturday about the makeover of the walls in the lane connecting to the Bagh.
Register case against Rawat for comment on ‘Panj Piaras’: Akali Dal
Chandigarh (IANS): Despite seeking an apology for his comment, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday demanded that a criminal case should be registered against Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat for hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community by terming some Congress leaders as ‘Panj Piaras’. In a statement issued here, SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said that it is shocking that Harish Rawat has equated Congress leaders with the ‘Panj Piaras’ who occupied a very high position in Sikhism. “Such kind of atrocious statements, which are an insult to Sikhs worldwide, will not be tolerated at any cost. Rawat should be taken to task immediately,” Cheema said. He also asked the Congress leader to withdraw his statement immediately and offer an unconditional apology to the Sikh community. “Rawat is also advised not to play with the sentiments of the community in this
“Devastated to hear that Jallianwala Bagh, site of the Amritsar Massacre of 1919, has been revamped, which means that the last traces of the event have effectively been erased. This is sadly just part of the general Disneyfication of the old city of Amritsar.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the renovated complex of Jallianwala Bagh Smarak to the nation through video conference. During the event, he also inaugurated the Museum Galleries at the Smarak. The
event showcased the multiple development initiatives taken by the government to upgrade the complex. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said the dreams of the innocent boys and girls, of the sisters and brothers are still visible in the bullet marks in the walls of Jallianwala Bagh. He added that today, we are remembering the love and lives of countless mothers and sisters which were snatched away in that Shaheedi well.

Auto review by Veeno Dewan The Mazda MX5-GS-P with the Sport Package is the ultimate combination for performance buyers, offering a an almost perfect factory-prepared trackready car. The as tested GS-P arrives in the convertible format and its speedy bits include : Bilstein dampers, limited-slip differential, and front strut tower brace for better cornering and handling. The optional Sport Package also adds performance Brembo front brakes, 17-inch forged BBS wheels, and sporty Recaro sports for the muchneeded grip and bolstering. The MX-5 GS-P ($37,200) trims also add passenger headrest speakers, heated exterior mirrors, noise-isolating windshield, heated black cloth-trimmed seats with grey stitching, and LED daytime running lights. New updates for the 2021MX5 ( priced from $33,200 in Canada.) include: wireless Apple Carplay in the GT trim, along with gorgeous optional white leather Nappa seat covers and accompanying white door and dash trim. There was a 2020 mild power bump up to 181 horsepower from the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine at a higher 7,000 rpm and 151 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Maximum engine speed has been raised from 6,800 rpm to 7,500 rpm. Torque has been increased from low to high engine speeds, with faster response times for

the engine. The transmission is either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic gearbox. We tested a 2021 Mazda MX-5 GSP with: the six- speed manual transmission model, SKYACTIV-G 2.0L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, SKYACTIVMT 6-speed manual transmission. Also added was the sport suspension with Bilstein® shock absorbers, Limited Slip Differential (LSD), strut tower bar, LED headlights with signature lighting, LED Daytime Running Lights, and LED rear combination lights Interior wise there is a:7” colour touchscreen display with Mazda noise compensation technology including driver and passenger headrest speakers, and subwoofer. Also included was: SiriusXM® satellite radio, SiriusXM Traffic Plus and Travel Link® services (includes complimentary 5-year subscription), navigation, telescopic steering wheel, push but-

ton starts, advanced keyless entry system, air conditioning with automatic climate controls. Two average-sized adults will feel snug and comfortable in the cozy cabin. The MX-5 interior highlights include simple legible gauges and welldesigned ergonomic controls that remains true to its roots with the focus on being a driver’s car. Interior storage is tight, this being a small narrow roadster - there are two removable cupholders, a small center console/arm rest and a cubby hole under the bottom of the center stack that can take a phone or wallet. Sadly, the trunk is miniscule at only 121L cargo capacity. Take soft squishy bags! The driving experience is so pure in the MX-5, that even novice drivers can carve corners with precision and skill. The steering is light and very responsive with excellent feedback. It’s the epitomes of point and shoot driving. The formula is delightfully simple and works. Beautifully engineered handling, a rewarding six-speed manual and a responsive four-cylinder engine providing adequate power. Enough
said. The combination of superbly matched engine, transmission, and chassis is simply wonderfully executed. The MX-5 is truly in its elements on winding country roads, a day at the track or just blasting around with no place to go. It is so small and light and instills any novice driver with confidence. The sixspeed manual transmission’s clutch is weighty only to a point as to give the driver feedback while the shifter almost effortlessly “snicks” from one cog to another. The sense of speed is what matters most in a Mazda MX-5. This is the Miata’s greatest trick and always has been. experiencing thrust through the torque-rich power band (90% of all the torque is on tap between 2,000 and about 6,500 rpm) is addictive. The Performance Bilstein dampers and pumped up Brembo brakes add to the supple handling and confident, no fade braking. Driving a Mazda MX-5 well requires some practice to obtain the skill and dexterity, and when done right, the satisfaction that flows through the driver is like a good buzz – this is what charms everyone. Fuel economy is: (Premium Gasoline in L/100 km) is rated at: 9.0 city; 7.0 highway. Downsides are few, the interior will be tight for the larger bodied. I for one would err on the side of the RF Targa as opposed to the soft top. The hardtop offers security, its quieter inside, and the vibration-free cabin makes it an everyday car. Still the convertible offer superb thrills. Note, the Mazda MX5 GS-P is not a cheap option for what is a very small two- seater. Still, it is worth the money if as a purist daily driving thrills are what you need. There is a reason the MX-5 is the best-selling roadster in history- It’s called FUN! 2021 Mazda MX-5 Priced from $32,200 -$ 40,200 Mazda MX-5 GS- P Edition priced from $37,200. Website: www.mazda.ca

A market of extremes: near record sales in August combined with lowest supply in four decades SURREY, BC (GLOBE NEWSWIRE): Demand for Fraser Valley real estate remained elevated in August reaching the second highest sales ever for the month against a backdrop of decreasing supply. The Board processed a total of 2,087 property sales on its Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in August, an increase of 4.0 per cent compared to July and a 2.4 per cent increase compared to the same month last year. Sales remained unusually high for the month; second only to August of 2005. Larry Anderson, President of the Board, said, “Home buyers are facing one of the worst supply shortages in Fraser Valley history. Our sales are over 30 per cent above normal, while our housing stock is at levels last seen in the early 80s. “To put our supply and demand situation in perspective, for every 100 townhomes on the mar-
ket in August, Fraser Valley REALTORS® sold 94. The single-family detached and condo markets also remained in strong seller’s market territory. Persistent demand and lack of supply continues to put upward pressure on home prices.” In August, the Board received 2,107 new listings, a decrease of 36.3 per cent compared to last year, and a decrease of 13.3 per cent compared to July 2021. The month ended with total active inventory sitting at 4,077, a 16.8 per cent decrease compared to July, and 44.9 per cent fewer than August 2020. Baldev Gill, Chief Executive Officer of the Board, added, “To improve affordability, the BC government introduced the foreign buyers’ tax in 2016 and the federal government introduced the mortgage stress test two years later. And yet, in the last five years, the price of a typical detached home in the Fraser

All levels of government must work together to correct the structural housing shortage.” Across Fraser Valley, in August, the average number of days to sell a singlefamily detached home was 29 and a townhome was 19 days. Apartments took, on average, 29 days to sell. Courtesy: Fraser Valley Real Estate Board

Khattar’s claims on farmers’ welfare ‘shoddy defence’: Amarinder Singh Chandigarh (IANS): In a hard-hitting response to his Haryana counterpart’s tweets questioning him on farmer welfare, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday ripped into Manohal Lal Khattar’s claims, terming them a “pathetic attempt” to cover up the “sustained and persistently shameful treatment meted out” to farmers by his government. Terming Khattar’s claims and questions as nothing but “a shoddy defence” against the nationwide criticism of the latest in the series of violent assaults on peacefully protesting farmers by his government, Amarinder Singh said the various statements made by the Haryana Chief Minister in the wake of the baton charge on his own state’s farmers had “once again utterly and unequivocally exposed the BJP’s anti-farmer mindset”. “Instead of apologising for the unprovoked and unjustified attack on the farmers, Khattar had been brazenly defending the police action and even tried to vindicate the Karnal SDM’s shocking instructions to the cops, which the world had seen and condemned,” he said. Rebutting the “atrocious assertions” of the Haryana CM that his government had done more for
Amarinder Singh launches ‘Innovation Mission Punjab’ to attract investors Chandigarh (IANS): With the objective of tapping Punjab’s growth potential by developing a vibrant environment for entrepreneurship, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday launched ‘Innovation Mission Punjab’ (IMPunjab), a public-private partnership to bring in the best global investors. In his remarks at the virtual event, the Chief Minister said the mission will unleash Punjab’s growth potential and create a thriving economy by generating jobs and inviting investment. The mission will mobilise a global pool of ambassadors and partners for investment, mentorship and market access, said Amarinder Singh, adding the mission will also leverage the strength of the Punjabi diaspora, allowing them to partake in this renewed growth story of Punjab besides running focused programmes to encourage entrepreneurship amongst women. On the occasion, a grand ‘ideathon’ was also announced in partnership with incubators, inviting budding entrepreneurs, young professionals, and students across the state. Showcasing Punjab as an entrepreneurial state with a strong footprint of entrepreneurs across the world and India, the Chief Minister said the state has a burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem with 450 startups and 20 plus incubators. Besides, the Innovation Mission Punjab will act as a catalyst to strengthen by rallying all the stakeholders viz. academia, incubators, investors, startups, government, progressive farmers, sports people, media, industry and corporates, said Amarinder Singh. The Chief Minister further said the mission is a unique public-private partnership, championed by the private sector with strong government backing. As partners the Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce, Mandi Board and Startup Punjab are providing over Rs 30 crore in cash and kind, including operating expenses for the first three years, 10 year rent-free lease for 12,000 sq ft at Kalkat Bhavan, and support to startups and incubators in the state. Meanwhile, eminent economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia, while describing innovation as the important factor in the start ups, said the innovation mission would get going in true sense once the things get back to normal and a post-COVID-19 scenario emerges. He said digital connectivity and artificial intelligence are key areas of the start-up sector.
the farmers than the Punjab government, Amarinder Singh asked Khattar: “If that is the case, then why are your own state’s farmers angry with you and your Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)?” “Having failed to convince the people of India that it was Punjab and its farmers who were responsible for the prolonged agitation against the farm laws at the Delhi borders, Khattar was now resorting to blatant lies and exaggerated claims,” Amarinder Singh said, adding that “indulging in this petty data crunching will not condone Haryana government’s excesses against the farmers”. Far from ensuring the welfare of farmers, the Khattar government had actively damaged their interests, said the Punjab Chief Minister, countering the former’s claims with a list of pro-farmer initiatives and schemes initiated by his government despite the “fiscal mess” he inherited from the BJP-SAD government back in 2017. “Your party left us without money even to pay our employees, and yet, we have successfully waived off Rs 4,624.38 crore in debt of 564,143 small and marginal farmers till date, with another Rs 590 crore sanctioned for loan waiver of
2.85 lakh landless farmers and labourers,” said Amarinder Singh, dismissing Khattar’s “nonsensical claims of leading a pro-farmer government”. Noting that Haryana does not give a single paisa
to its farmers in power subsidy, the Chief Minister said in Punjab, power subsidy of Rs 7,200 crore of (about Rs 17,000 per hectare) is being provided every year for agriculture pump-sets of farmers. (A crore is 10 million).
