Private companies paid $50K to send Surrey mayor to real estate conference Five private companies covered most of the $58,000 cost to send Surrey’s mayor to a real estate conference in France earlier this month. Linda Hepner was invited to speak at Les Marche International des Professionnels de l’immobilier (MIPIM) 2018, which Hepner has called one of the largest and most prestigious real estate

conferences in the world. It took place in Cannes from March 13 to 16. The bill for the trip fell just shy of $60,000, with the city spending about $11,000 on the event, and the conference covering Hepner’s accommodation and registration. The rest of the cost was covered by a $50,000 sponsorship from Fraser Surrey Docks, Blackwood

Partners, Century Group, Surrey City Development Corp. and Concord Pacific. Hepner participated in a panel at the conference, titled City as a Service, the New Urban Experience. The trip, which also included three Surrey city staffers, was approved at a council meeting on Feb. 5. Though some questioned whether the

business sponsorship creates a perceived conflict of interest, the city noted several investment inquiries have come out of the junket. Surrey has been represented at MIPIM before. In 2004, Bing Thom Architects’ Surrey Central City project won a Special Jury Award as the world’s best overall new development for its architecture and building innovation.
