Supreme Court backs up Election Commission’s action against Yogi Adityanath, Mayawati, Maneka Gandhi and Azam Khan New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it was content with the Election Commission (EC) action against Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan for their controversial statements violating the model code of conduct. On Monday, the EC barred Mayawati and Maneka Gandhi for 48 hours, and Adityanath and Azam Khan for 72 hours from addressing any public meeting. When senior advocate C.A. Sundaram, appearing for the EC, told the court that it had acted against leaders violating the model

code of conduct, the Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi quipped: “So, you have woken up to take action. It seems the EC has got its power back.” The CJI’s repartee came on the

poll panel’s admission before the top court on Monday that it was almost “powerless” when it came to taking punitive measures against political leaders. The apex court also refused to

consider Mayawati’s plea against the EC gag order on her. The Bench replied if she was not happy, she could challenge the EC order with an appropriate petition before the court.
Amarinder Singh slams Narendra Modi over Jallianwala Bagh remarks
Chandigarh (IANS): Within hours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s absence at the main function to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by British forces, the Chief Minister on Sunday hit back. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu had presided over the function on Saturday afternoon at the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial in Amritsar to commemorate the event. Punjab Governor V.P. Singh Badnore was present at the function but Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who paid homage to the martyrs at the venue on Saturday along with Congress President Rahul Gandhi, stayed away. Taking strong exception to Modi’s remarks made at a rally in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir,
Congress President Rahul Gandhi at Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial.
Amarinder Singh on Sunday said that “dirty politics was being played over the sombre occasion of the Jallianwala Bagh centenary”. Countering Modi’s attack on him over the Jallianwala Bagh event organised by the central government, Amarinder Singh said the Centre had deliberately chosen to hold a parallel event instead
of supporting the initiatives and programmes of the state government. “I had personally approached the Prime Minister several times over the last two years to seek support for ensuring that the centenary of the historic event is observed in a befitting manner but the central government had failed to respond
suitably,” the Chief Minister pointed out. “Instead, the Modi government decided to hold its own event, quite evidently to score brownie political points in the backdrop of the Lok Sabha elections. This was truly shocking considering the fact that the Prime Minister was Chairman of the Jallianwala Bagh Trust,” he said in a statement here. “Unlike the BJP, the Congress leadership does not believe in dictating terms to its state governments,” Amarinder Singh said, countering Modi’s remark that he did not attend the central government event under pressure from his party high command. Amarinder Singh said that all the necessary protocols were duly followed, including appointment of a cabinet minister to be present at the Vice President’s function on Saturday.

Bangladesh asks actor Ferdous to return after poll row Kolkata (IANS): In the wake of a controversy over famed Bangladesh actor Ferdous Ahmed canvassing for a Trinamool Congress candidate in West Bengal, the Deputy High Commission for Bangladesh has asked him not to take part in the election campaign in India and return to his country. It was also suggested to the

actor that he should resume his shooting here after the election season gets over, an official at the Bangladeshi mission here said. Ahmed, a Bangladeshi national now working in Bengali film industry, on Sunday campaigned for Trinamool’s candidate Kanaia Lal Agarwal from Raiganj in North Dinajpur district. He was
seen along with two other Bengali actors, Ankush Hazra and Payel Sarkar. “Based on media reports, he was asked whether he participated in the campaign or not. Ahmed told us that he was there for the purpose of shooting and had participated in the (ongoing Lok Sabha election) campaign. It was not a right thing to

take part in the election as a foreign national. He was asked to go back,” the official told IANS. “We have also suggested to him that he should resume his shooting activities after the election season gets over,” the official added. The Indian government, however, has cancelled Ahmed’s visa and he has been asked to leave the country, the Union Home Ministry announced on Tuesday evening. Asked about another Bangladeshi actor Gazi Abdun Noor, who was also seen campaigning for Trinamool, the official said: “He was seen in the video. But he did not utter any word. He merely raised his hands.” Trinamool candidate Agarwal, however, claimed that
he has “no knowledge” about Ahmed campaigning for him and that he had not invitedthe Bangladeshi actor to canvass for him. The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday lodged a complaint against the Trinamool candidate on violation of model code of conduct on foreigner canvassing for a party. The Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal is seeking clarification and instruction from the Election Commission on the issue which is “new” to the officials. “It is a new thing and requires clarification and instructions. It has to be examined in view of the legal implication of such exercise. We are informing the details of the fact and seeking clarification from
the Election Commission,” Additional CEO Sanjay Basu told reporters here on Tuesday. The CEO’s office, which had sought a report from the district election officer regarding the incident of the Bangladeshi actor canvassing for the Trinamool, is also sending the report to the Commission, he added. Basu, however, had said the Model Code of Conduct doesn’t specifically state anything about a foreign national canvassing for any political party. Asked if it is a violation of the poll code, he had said: “The MCC does not have anything specifically written regarding this.” On Noor, he said: “We have not received any complaint.”

New Delhi (IANS): The Congress on Tuesday filed several complaints with the Election Commission (EC) with regard to “surrogate advertising” with Prime Minister Narendra Modis picture, a “suspicious black box” transported in Modi’s helicopter and “hateful speeches” made by top BJP leaders. The party sought directions to authorities to initiate probe into a “suspicious black box removed” from Modi’s helicopter and “shipped off in a private car”, not part of his convoy, after he landed in Chitradurga on April 9 for campaign-
ing. It also sought investigation in another incident on April 3 in Arunachal Pradesh, where “cash worth crores was seized from Modi’s convoy” shortly before his rally. In another representation, the Congress called for intervention by the EC against Modi’s “continued and brazen” violation of model code of conduct and “hateful and divisive” comments made by him and BJP chief Amit Shah. The party said no one was above law and the “matter should be taken with utmost seriousness”. The party also alleged that

“unnecessary hindrances were being created” by the ruling AIADMK MP from Karur in the Congress candidate’s campaign and said directions should be given to election officials to stop this. The party alleged Indian Railways issued tickets in Barabanki with details of rural housing scheme and a picture of Prime Minister. It asked the EC to issue “urgent and necessary directions” to the Railway Board to remove all surrogate advertising. The Railways on Tuesday suspended four officials for the incident.

Voter desire for change will show on May 23: Vadra New Delhi (IANS): Robert Vadra, husband of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, on Tuesday said the people wanted change and it would be visible after the results were declared on May 23. “Definitely. There are chances of a change in the country. You will see it in May, when the results come out,” he said, when asked if he thinks people will vote for the Con-
Robert Vadra gress in the Lok Sabha polls. “The result will come in
our favour. Everyone wants change, whether it’s old or young. They will vote for change,” he said. Vadra was speaking to reporters after distributing sweets and blankets at a school for visuallychallenged students here ahead of his birthday on April 18. On challenge from BJP’s Smriti Irani in Amethi to his brother-in-law and Congress President Rahul Gandhi,
Vadra said, “She is not going to give any tough challenge to Rahul Gandhi. They only spread rumours and falsehoods.” “The people of Amethi are happy with Rahul Gandhi. We (Congress) have done a lot of development work there. Rahulji will win from there with a huge margin,” he said.
To questions about possibilities of Priyanka Gandhi contesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “she will definitely give him a tough challenge if she fights from Varanasi because people see their happiness in her.” “People in Varanasi also want change and they see a ray of hope in Priyanka and Rahul.
Rahulji will lead the country, and Priyanka and I are with him,” he said. However, sources in the Congress said Priyanka Gandhi would not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, ending speculations about her being pitted against Modi.
Nothing wrong in highlighting soldiers in polls: Modi New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday defended invoking martyrs in his poll campaigns, saying there was nothing wrong in highlighting the sacrifices made by security personnel, adding some parties have made the deaths of farmers a political issue. “Thousands of soldiers have died in the past 40 years due to terrorism. Is it not an issue as to what should be done for them? If farmers die, it is an issue, then why not soldiers who die defending the counrty?” he said in an interview to DD News. “We want to strengthen our forces. We have been fighting terrorism for the past 40 years. If we do not take this to public, what is the logic?” Opposition parties have lodged complaints to the Election Commission over “politicisation” of the death of 40 CRPF personnel in Pulwama and subsequent retaliatory airstrike in Balakot in Pakistan. Modi said the country cannot be run without nationalism. “Can any country run without nationalism? If we want to bring Olympic medals, the chances increase if the youth is filled with nationalism,” he said. The Prime Minister said a section of “hypersecular” people in the country were targeting his government. Nothing had happened since Nehru’s time to resolve Jammu & Kashmir conflict, he said. “We toed one line for 70 years. There has been no outcome. We prepared roadmaps in re-
Narendra Modi gards to Articles 370 and 35 A (of Constitution). Should not we take people into confidence and inform them about it?” he said. Over the charges of National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti that “Kashmir will be separated”, Modi said “They have always used such language. They have resorted to emotional blackmailing and emotional exploitation”. Calling them outdated, Modi said panchayat elections in the state saw 70-75 per cent polling despite a boycott call by these leaders. Modi also took a dig at Congress President Rahul Gandhi for raising Rafale fighter jet deal issue even when there were “no proof showing any irregularities” in it. “He raised wrong issues about Rafale to wash away his father’s sins in Bofors case by attributing it to nationalism,” said Modi.

Later, Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav also arrived at the party office and had a meeting with Poonam Sinha. Samajwadi Party sources said that Poonam Sinha would file her nomination papers on Thursday and she would be the SP-BSP-RLD candidate from Lucknow. The Congress was likely to support her. The Congress decision not to field any candidate from the state capital paves the way for a one-on-one faceoff between Rajnath Singh and Poonam Sinha.

Women currently constitute
23 per cent of Internet users and six per cent of mass entrepreneurs in India. “When you give women and youth the skills and technology to improve their lives, we can equip them to unlock economic and social value for themselves and their communities,” said Ankhi Das, Public Policy Director, Facebook - India, South and Central Asia. Nyay scheme will jump-start Indian economy: Rahul Pathanapuram (Kerala) (IANS): The Congress’ Nyuntam Aay Yojana (Nyay), a minimum income guarantee scheme, will jump-start the Indian economy, party President Rahul Gandhi said here on Tuesday. Gandhi kicked off his two-day campaign tour from Pathanapuram, Kollam district, where he arrived on Tuesday morning from the state capital. His first stop was at the St, Stephen’s School ground near here, where he addressed a public rally. “In the past five years of the Narendra Modi government, he has not fulfilled a single promise and all sectors are reeling. The demonetisation and the ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ have deeply affected the Indian economy. “Our Nyay scheme which has been charted out by expert economists will see that five crore families in our country will get Rs 72,000 every year and it would not be what Modi promised to give Rs 15 lakhs [Rs 1.5 million],” Gandhi said to cheers from the crowd. The party chief added: “This scheme will create new business, which in turn will create new jobs and the money will start to circulate which will help jump-start the economy. I have made it clear that if Modi can give away crores of rupees to 15 business people, I will give it to the poor people which constitute 20 per cent of the population.” He said that if the Congress comes to power, the party will allow anyone to start a business which will provide employment without any license for three years. “Once the business becomes successful and after a period of three years, only then will we insist for papers. We also promise the farmers in the country that there would be a special budget for them, while also regular interactions will take place. “Modi did nothing for the cashew industry here but we assure you that it will be taken care of by us.” He reiterated that his reason for contesting from Wayanad was to send out a message that India is one, while also praising Kerala for the huge progress it has made on all fronts including tol-
India’s travel spend to grow to $136 bn by 2021 New Delhi (IANS): The travel spend in India is expected to grow at 13 per cent to a total of $136 billion by 2021, said a new report by Bain & Company and Google India on Tuesday. According to the “How Does India Travel” report, the Indian traveller spent around $94 billion in 2018 on around 2 billion domestic and international trips, thus, helping India’s travel and tourism industry achieve unprecedented scale. “New users perceive that online channels are geared towards more frequent flyers and experience-oriented travellers and existing travellers research online but the lack of trust in payments and booking experience make them end up booking offline. “If travel players tap these online users through personalised marketing, messaging and travel plans, they can further augment online travel bookings. This can be done by adopting digital technologies to influence customers early in the journey,” Vikas Agnihotri, Country DirectorSales, Google India, said in a statement. The report indicates a 12 per cent growth in transportation ($50 billion) and 13 per cent growth in lodging ($21 billion) and consumption, which includes spends on shopping, recreation and food, to grow at 13 per cent ($65 billion) over the next three years. “There is a perception amongst consumers that online channels are geared towards premium customers, along with a marked distrust around payment and pricing terms. It is imperative for businesses to address these concerns in order to effectively tap into the growing base of users,” Arpan Sheth, Partner, Bain & Company said. As more people come online, smartphone penetration improves and use of digital payments goes up, the report predicts that Indian travellers would spend an additional $24 billion on online travel bookings over the next three years, a growth from 25 percent in 2018 to 35 per cent in 2021.
“I say this with utmost humility and I say this not just to Congressmen in Kerala, but to the entire people who represent all other political parties. I consider it as a huge honour to represent Ker-
ala. I want to spend time with you to learn from you on your culture, history and tradition.” Kerala will go to the polls on April 23 to elect 20 Lok Sabha members.

Former army chief’s political career remains grounded for now Chandigarh (IANS): He was the first Sikh to become the Army chief but the political career of General J.J. Singh (retired) seems to be grounded for the time being. The newly formed Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali), which fielded him in February for the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat in Punjab, has now announced that it
was withdrawing him as its candidate. The SAD (Taksali), which was formed earlier this year by a group of senior breakaway leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal, withdrew Singh’s candidature on Sunday in favour of Paramjit Kaur Khalra, the candidate of the the Punjab Democratic Alliance (PDA), which
is an alliance of six political parties in the state, for the Khadoor Sahib seat. The former Army chief (January 31, 2005 to September 30, 2007) was aslo Governor of Arunachal Pradesh from January 2008 to May 2013. The retired general’s political ambitions were revealed first when he joined the SAD ahead of the February
2017 Assembly elections in Punjab and was fielded by the party against the politically formidable Amarinder Singh, who is now the Chief Minister. The election was interesting because in this political battlefield in Patiala Assembly seat, a former Army captain (Amarinder) was able to defeat a former Army general. Amarinder, who comes from
the royal family of the Patiala state and is addressed as a Maharaja, served in the
Army in the 1960s. Singh not only lost the election but finished a poor third and even lost his security deposit. When the SAD (Taksali) named him as their candidate, Singh said that he is “considering himself as the luckiest person”. That luck, it seems, ran out even before he could file his nomination papers.

Chandigarh (IANS): With an increase in the number of incidents of fire in the standing wheat crop, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday demanded that the Punjab government should give 100 per cent compensation for the losses suffered by the farmers. “The AAP has taken a serious note of the recurring fire incidents destroying standing crops of worth several crores of rupees in the state. The incidents of fire are taking place due to the lackadaisical attitude of the state government,” AAP’s Kisan Wing President and legislator Kultar Singh Sandhwan said in a statement issued here. He said that with the advent of
summer season, incidents of fire destroying standing crops worth crores of rupees are on the rise and are adding to the miseries of the farmers already caught in a serious agrarian crisis. Officials said that over two dozen incidents of crops catching fire had been reported so far across Punjab. Noting that the fire incidents have not been new to the state, Sandhwan said: “If official figures are to be believed, standing crops worth crores of rupees fell to the raging flames caused mostly due to short circuit or sparks in the live high tension wires over the certain areas.” He pointed out to a fire incident
Congress MP’s wife joins AAP in Punjab; to contest : On a day when Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh met party legislators to control any rebellion in the party ranks, the ruling party was left embarrassed on Tuesday when the wife of a Congress Rajya Sabha member joined the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and was named a candidate in the Lok Sabha elections. Harbans Kaur, a former Congress MLA (20022007) and wife of Congress Rajya Sabha member Shamsher Singh Dullo, joined the AAP in Jalandhar in the presence of senior AAP leader and legislator Aman Arora.
in the Banur area under Mohali district in which crop worth lakhs of rupees was burnt. “It is not an incident to be seen in isolation. There are hundreds of incidents of fire that had been taking place. The affected farmers get no compensation for the financial loss they had suffered,” he said. Punjab is looking at a bumper procurement of 130 lakh tonnes this season (April-May). Sandhwan lamented that power sector officials were not bothered about the farmers’ losses. He said that the outdated power supply modes, which were not being properly maintained, were responsible for fires in agricultural fields.
Kaur was declared the AAP candidate for the Fatehgarh Sahib (reserved) Lok Sabha seat by AAP following her joining. The AAP withdrew the name of its already announced candidate for the seat, Balwinder Singh, in favour of Kaur. Dullo, who was himself President of the Punjab Congress earlier, has been critical of Amarinder Singh in recent years. He is a Dalit leader. Though the Congress was politically embarrassed by the development, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that Kaur’s joining the AAP will not have any impact on the Congress. Kaur lost the election in the 2007 Assembly polls.

SAD for probe into missing Rs 6.65 crore seized by cops Chandigarh (IANS): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) here on Sunday urged the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for an independent probe into recovery of Rs 6.65 crore [Rs 66.5 million] by Punjab Police from the house of a Christian priest, which later went missing. Alleging that the money could be misused by the Congress in the parliamentary polls, the SAD demanded a thorough probe into the missing money and strict action against police officers concerned. SAD senior vice-president
Daljit Singh Cheema in a statement said it was important to find the money trail. “We have reasons to believe this money could find its way into the hands of the Congress and its leaders and be used to influence voters in the parliamentary polls. Only an independent probe can prevent this and bring the guilty of the crime to book,” Cheema said. The SAD leader said the Khanna Police had been exposed by the special investigation team, appointed to probe the case, but even the SIT could not proceed against the Con-
gress or its leaders. “As per the latest information, it has been ascertained that two assistant sub-inspectors and a police informer made off with Rs 6.65 crore and the police were looking for the three accused. It seems doubtful that two low-level police officers could commit the crime without any political patronage,” Cheema said. “The SIT is constrained because it reports to the Congress government and cannot explore this angle. This is why an independent probe, supervised by the EC, is neces-
sary to get to the bottom of the case,” he said. The Akali leader also demanded registration of cases against all officers of the Khanna police district who tried to give a clean chit to the policemen after the Christian priest, Father Anthony Madasserry, claimed that
Rs 16.32 crore had been seized from his residence last month, but the authorities had shown recovery of only Rs 9.66 crore. “The Khanna police did its utmost to discredit Father Madasserry and refused any wrongdoing on its part. But bank officials (of South Indian Bank)
who counted the money as well as CCTV footage nailed the lies of the Khanna police,” Cheema claimed. He also demanded a probe why the Khanna police claimed that it seized the money from Doraha, and not the priest’s house in Jalandhar.
Kartarpur corridor project making progress Chandigarh / New Delhi (IANS): Project implementation of the Kartarpur corridor proposed for Indian pilgrims to visit the revered Sikh shrine in Pakistan is “progressing with speed”, sources said on Tuesday after officials of the two countries held a meeting to discuss technical and security issues. The officials of the two countries met in Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district on Tuesday after India made the proposal to address the outstanding technical issues, the sources said. The Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province, located 4.5 km from the border near the Dera Baba Nanak town in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, is a highly revered Sikh shrine as it is here that Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life and is his final resting place. The two sides discussed issues such as the alignment of the corridor, which will be around 5 km long, of which nearly 4.5
km will fall in the Pakistan territory, sources said. The officials also discussed security arrangements for the corridor which is expected to cater to hundreds of pilgrims from India who are eager to visit the Sikh shrine inside Pakistan through a visa-free arrangement. The sources said project implementation on the ground is progressing with speed. The corridor is expected to be completed before November this year to enable pilgrims to travel to the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. The governments of India and Pakistan are trying to facilitate the travel of pilgrims to offer prayers at the gurdwara -- a demand made by the Sikhs for the past over 70 years. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has been demanding visa-free “khule darshan” at the gurdwara for Indians of all faiths, from India and overseas, all seven days a week.

Salman Khan goes grey for ‘Bharat’ Mumbai (IANS): Superstar Salman Khan, known for his chiselled looks, flaunts a bearded old look in “Bharat”. The 53-year-old actor gave a glimpse into the look on Monday via social media. “Jitne safed baal mere sar aur dhaadi mein hain,
usse kahin zyada rangeen meri zindagi rahi hain! ‘Bharat’. (As many white hairs on my head and beard, I have had a more colourful life than that),” he wrote along with a poster of the film. While the film’s teaser showcased five different
looks of Salman, his saltand-pepper look was kept under wraps. The poster also shows actor Jackie Shroff in the backdrop. He is playing Salman’s father in the film. “Bharat” is an official remake of a Korean film “An Ode To My Father”. It de-
picts the history of India through the life of an ordinary man. Along with Salman, the film also stars Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani and Tabu in the lead roles. It is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. The film will release on the occasion of Eid.
Cinema can help educate masses as well: Akshay Kumar The actor says it is his way of giving back to the society. “I feel movies are a type of communication that is consumed by majority of people not only in India but also internationally,” Akshay said in a statement. “It is a way of not only reaching out to the masses but also at times educating them. I feel there is no point of being an influencer if you can’t make the best Mumbai (IANS): Actor Akshay Kumar says cinema is not only a way to reach out to the masses but also to educate them. Be it “Padman”, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” or “2.0”, which will be telecast on Zee Cinema on April 21, Akshay backs films that send out a message.
Dharmendra recalls ‘Sholay’ dialogues at rally
use of your platform to improve the country. This is my way of giving back,” he said. Akshay portrays the main antagonist, an eccentric scientist named Richard in “2.0”. The film marked Akshay’s Tamil debut and is his first film with megastar Rajinikanth. Talking about the film, Akshay said: “’2.0’ is a mega movie and the first in
my career. While I try to explore different roles, I genuinely felt that this would be a completely different ball game. It rightly proved to be so. In all my years of being part of the industry, I have never seen so much money, talent and technology work together from different parts of the globe to make a film of this magnitude.”

Mathura (IANS): Popular film actor Dharmendra on Sunday repeated his famous dialogues from the Hindi blockbuster “Sholay” as he campaigned here for his wife Hema Malini in the Lok Sabha elections. The still charismatic Dharmendra appealed to voters to ensure the Bhartiya Janata Party candidate’s victory. Mathura goes to the polls on April 18. Addressing BJP supporters, Dharmendra praised the Narendra Modi government. On persistent demands, he repeated his famous dialogues from “Sholay”. He called himself a farmer and appealed to local farmers to strengthen the BJP. Hema Malini was with him during meetings and at many interactions in Goverdhan area. Dharmendra promised to return to the region after Hema Malini’s victory and have food at a farmer’s home. Earlier, Hema Malini tweeted: “Today is also a special day for me! Dharamji is here in Mathura to campaign for a whole day on my behalf.” The actress’ campaign has been inspiring jokes and memes galore on social media. Her farm woman avatar, wherein she joined farmers and tried her hand at cutting the wheat crop in this region in Uttar Pradesh, invited not just scorn from the opposition but also the tag of ‘drama girl’ over the ‘dream girl’ she has been known as.

Hellboy (PG) **** Wronged!
Dynamic in all respects is the new Hellboy. In Cineplex Cinemas and Landmark theatres across BC. This dynamite action epic from VVS Films is firing on all cinemas. Be propane’s for some good-old fashioned swashbuckling fun. Monsters are evil. Some are good. Somewhere in between is the red skinned horn headed Hellboy. Smart story-telling here transforms us into quite an imaginative lost world full of witches, hideous monsters and yes, an actual plot. First we see the legend of King Arthur unfold. Next we see a witchy woman being demonized and put to death and into this mix somehow comes Hellboy, an
abomination to be sure. Many indiscretions and hell bent grudges resurface decades, if not centuries later with Hellboy and an odd assortment of soldier boys trying to stave off an army of malcontents and a plague threaten-
ing to destroy the world. You get the picture. Ridiculous but entirely nonsensical fun. Superior special effects and enough ad libs and sly quips by the man himself make Hellboy a lot of campy chaotic free reigning fun

Type of marriage Eight different types of Vivaah have been documented in the ancient Indian scripture Manu Smrti III.20-34.[4] In all these types of marriage, an eligible groom is one who has completed his Brahmacharya Ashram (student hood) and an eligible bride is a never-married virgin who has recently attained puberty. The eight types of marriage
are:[5][6][7] Brahma Vivaah:Brahma vivah is considered the best marriage. In this the boy and girl belonging to good families and the same varna get married. The boy should have completed his Brahmacharya Ashram (age of learning). There is no extensive inventory of possessions involved and the girl enters the boy’s house with two sets of
clothes and some ornaments as seen fit by her family. In this marriage, the boy’s family approaches the girl’s family. “Kanyadaan”, which is the handing of the bride by her father to the groom, is an important ritual of the Brahma Vivah. Prajapatya Vivaah: This type of marriage is the same as the Brahma vivaah in all respects, except that
the bride’s father gives her away as a gift, not to the groom, but to the groom’s father. This type of marriage is resorted to when the groom and bride are both very young. Thus, the protection of the bride or daughter is handed over by her father to the groom’s father during the Panigrahan (hand-receiving) ceremony. The wedding ceremony involving the young bride and
groom may take place immediately afterwards, but the wedding may not be consummated for several years, until the bride and groom are old enough. Daiva Vivaah: In this type of wedding, there are no feasts or celebrations that are specific to the wedding, but the wedding of the daughter of a poor family is held as an act of charity by wealthy

people. It was customary for kings, landlords and rich merchants to facilitate rituals for social upliftment where charity would be given to all. During these great events, a poor man would sometimes approach the wealthy host and seek the charity that his daughter’s wedding be performed at this time. CONTINUED NEXT WEEK

Fighting insomnia without drugs or doctors choose different types of sensory activities, such as holding a cold object, smelling different aromas, doing arts and craft to try to calm down”. “But weighted blankets are supposed to work in the same way. Tight swaddling helps newborns feel snug and secure so they dose off more quickly. The blanket simulates a comforting hug, calming the nervous system”. These blankets look like regular ones. But they’re filled with plastic beads or pellets to make them heavier and can weigh from three to upwards of twenty pounds. If you believe a weighted blanket might be the answer to insomnia, buy one that weighs 10 percent of your own weight. So someone weighing 150 pounds needs a blanket weighing 15 pounds. But do they work? Dr. Cusin says it’s impossible to do a scientific doubleblind study as all subjects would automatically know the blanket is heavier. Luckily, she says there’s little risk to these blankets, but to check with your
doctor before using one, particularly if for small children. And be ready to pay about $100 to $200 dollars to cuddle up in it. I hope it gives happy dreams. As F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author, remarked, “The worst thing in the world is trying to sleep and not to”. Sign up for medical tips at docgiff.com, and take a look at the new website. He has also been a general practitioner, ship’s surgeon and hotel doctor. His weekly medical column is published by 70 Canadian newspapers and 12 in the U.S. The readership is six million. DO you have trouble getting to sleep? Are you counting sheep and getting nowhere? Today, for many people a good night’s sleep is an elusive dream. Now, a report from The Harvard Medical School says that anxiety and stress often cause insomnia. And it’s refreshing to read that its solution doesn’t involve doctors or drugs. A prolonged lack of sleep can have devastating consequences. For instance, the huge oil spill by the Exon Valdez and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster were both believed to be related to sleep deprivation. But chronic insomnia can be lifethreatening in other ways. Dr. William Dement, a renowned sleep researcher at Stanford University in California, says there’s compelling evidence that how well and how long we sleep is an important indicator of how long we live! So, is there a magic number for the hours of sleep we need to keep healthy? An English proverb claims, “Six hours for a man, seven for a woman and eight for a fool”. But according to the National Sleep Foundation, whichever you are, eight hours is re-
quired for good health and safety. But only one-third of us get this amount. Insomnia is no friend to those who have pre-diabetes. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied a group of young men who were restricted to four hours of sleep a night. This caused a decrease in the secretion of insulin, a 40 percent decrease in the rate sugar was cleared from the blood and an increase in blood sugar. If the study had continued, the end result would have eventually been diabetes. Professor Mathew Walker at the University of California says, “sleep loss is one of the greatest public health challenges we face in the 21st century”. For instance, long distance truck drivers have a 200 to 500 percent greater risk of accident. And when a truck driver is killed, he or she takes 4.5 other people with them. Another study at the University of California showed that men deprived of one night of partial sleep resulted in an immune system that was less effective. They found that “natural killer cells” which fight viral infections and cancer were compromised. So how can Harvard doctors cure insomnia without drugs? I admit I expected them to pass along a great new scientific achievement. So I was shocked to hear that these professors believe that weighted blankets may be the answer for those who stare at the ceiling and count sheep all night. Dr. Christina Cusin, an assistant professor of psychiatry at The Harvard Medical School, reports, “weighted blankets have been around for a long time to treat children with autism or behavioral disturbances”. She adds, “It’s one of the sensory tools commonly used in psychiatric units. Patients who are in distress may

Chilli compound slows lung cancer progression: Study New York (IANS): Besides spicing up your food, chilli, it seems, also has some medicinal value. New research suggests the compound responsible for chilli’s heat could help slow the spread
of lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women. Most cancer-related deaths occur when cancer spreads to distant sites, a process called metas-
tasis. “Lung cancer and other cancers commonly metastasise to secondary locations like the brain, liver or bone, making them difficult to treat,” said
one of the study authors Jamie Friedman from Marshall University in the US. “Our study suggests the natural compound capsaicin from chilli peppers could represent a novel therapy to combat metastasis in lung cancer patients,” said Friedman, a doctoral candidate who performed the research in the laboratory of Piyali Dasgupta at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. In experiments involving three lines of cultured human non-small cell lung cancer cells, researchers observed capsaicin inhibited invasion, the first step of the metastatic process. They also found mice with metastatic cancer that consumed capsaicin showed smaller areas of metastatic cancer cells in the lung compared with mice not receiving the treatment. The findings were presented during the 2019 Experimental Biology meeting being held from April 6-9 in Orlando, Florida. Additional experiments revealed capsaicin suppresses lung cancer metastasis by inhibiting activation of the protein Src. This protein plays a role in the signalling that controls cellular processes like proliferation, differentiation, motility and adhesion. “We hope one day capsaicin can be used in combination with other chemotherapeutics to treat a variety of lung cancers,” said Friedman.

Moscow (IANS): While several agencies are planning to establish new orbital space stations and send expeditions across the solar system, a team of Russian scientists has found that space radiation could temporarily hinder formation of new cells in brains’ memory centres. The team from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), however, found that effects of low-dose neutron and gamma ray (Y-ray) radiation had no impact on rodents’ intellectual capabilities, the Sputnik news agency reported. It means the mice’s mental abilities and behaviour remained almost unaffected by the radiation, with memorisation occurring as normal and the rodents behaving in ways that were no different from the non-irradiated control group. Irradiated and non-irradiated mice “showed no differences in terms of exploratory behaviour or anxiety, six weeks after the irradiation,” with their “ability to form hippocampus-dependent memory also unaffected,” according to the study published in the NeuroReport academic journal. “We are not asserting that the behaviour and memory of irradiated mice remained completely unaffected,” Sputnik cited Alexander Lazutkin, a senior research scientist at the MIPT as saying to RIA Novosti news agency. “The data on other types of radiation suggests that despite the apparent preservation of memories, its individual fine components may suffer. That means our work is just the beginning of this kind of research,” he said. The new research has filled an important gap in scientific knowledge in the study of the types of neutrons produced in the atmosphere or inside spacecraft during their atoms’ interactions with cosmic rays, the researchers said.

2019 Volvo S60 T6 R –Design sedan: Swedish Premium Quality By Autoreviewman Now under the ownership of Chinese automaker Geely, Swedish premium carmaker, Volvo has come out with some wonderfully executed vehicles in the last few years. Case in point is the lasted generation of the S60 sedan. This premium sporty four-door sedan has svelte, sensuous coupe styling. The interiors are also beautifully finished. For now, the S60 arrives in three trim levels. The Momentum starts at $42,400 with front-wheel-drive, and at $47,400 with all-wheel-
drive. The AWD-only: the R-Design (As tested) starts at $52,400, and the top-line Inscription at $53,900. Very reasonable pricing in my opinion for this superlative luxury brand All S60 models use a 2.0L engine. In the entry-level FWD Momentum, it’s tur-
bocharged and puts out 250 horsepower. In the all-wheel-drive models, it’s both turbocharged and supercharged, making 316 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. The transmission is a smooth eight speed automatic unit. Interior wise, a fanatic attention to
detail is evident with the sleek-and-minimalistic Scandinavian design, The S60 does not have a lot of buttons or switches on the dash, instead there is as standard, Volvo’s Sensus Connect infotainment with its nine-inch, portrait touch screen. which you swipe sideways or up-anddown to access almost everything —It will no doubt appeal to minimalists, but others may wish for the simplicity and ease of proper buttons or dial for quickly needed things like heated seats and climate
operation. However there is voice control for some features The S60 and its sibling V60 wagon are the first models offered under the company’s new Care by Volvo subscription plan. For a two year monthly fee when you order a Volvo you get all maintenance paid for and a set of winter tires, and during the second year, you can trade for a new vehicle and plan if you don’t want to go the whole two years. Safety has always been a high point on Volvo’s and the S60 does not disap-
point. The City Safety system reduces the severity of rear-ends collisions at low speeds, the system sends a warning. Ignore it, and the car will brake hard to a complete stop. Volvo builds probably the safest cars in the world and the S60 is no exception. It is capable alternative to German and British luxury sedans. Wonderful inside and out in very way. Highly recommended. 2019 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design Base price: $52,400 with options. www.Volvo.ca

2019 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition: Shines Things Up Nicely! By Auto reviewman The 2019 Honda Ridgeline is the company’s stellar pickup, based on the Honda’s excellent Pilot CUV with some substantial reengineering such as a new suspension and the extensive use of high-strength steel for a chassis 28% stiffer than the previous generation. All Ridgelines are powered by Honda’s reliable and fuel efficient 3.5-litre V6 SOHC direct injection engine producing 280 hp and 262 lb/ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission. In the design department, the Ridgeline
looks more cohesive, less awkward and conventional, although there is no mistaking its sleek Honda looks. The new Ridgeline pickup bed is now longer and wider than before. Honda says it offers bestin-class payload carrying
capacity, too, at 718.5 kilograms. The tough composite covered bed is five-feet, four-inches long and comes with eight tie downs. The tailgate also features a twoway opening system that allows it to either flip down or swing out like a door. The
Ridgeline also comes with Honda’s in-bed trunk. It’s a lockable, waterproof cubby with room for 77 litres of ice and is also drainable. Highlights for the 2019 Ridgeline include new colors, more USB ports, the addition of a moonroof and power-sliding rear window. Pricing varies from $36,590$48,590. In Canada, all models come standard with Honda’s All-wheel Drive Intelligent Variable Torque Management system with Torque vectoring for superior traction in all corners and road conditions. One of the most
interesting options is a 150/400-watt AC inverter at the right rear of the box that powers “exciters” a kind of weatherproof speaker – behind the plastic pickup bed lining. The Ridgeline has a 1,584 lb payload with an interior cargo capacity (Rear seat folded up) of 50.2 cu ft. The tow rating is via seven pin connector at 5,000 lb (2,267 kg). The top-line Black Edition as tested is foremost a cosmetic option with a trendy black treatment to all the shiny bits. The 18-inch alloy wheels are finished in black, there is a black leather interior
with red contrast stitching, black floor mats and red ambient lighting. With its all black look and paintwork, the Black edition does look very cool, with a tough, sinister stance to it. The Black Edition is certainly worth the price for its unique looks and ambience. Highly recommended. One of the best pickups in its class. 2019 Honda Ridgeline Priced from $40,790$48,290. Black Edition as tested: Priced from $49,790. More info@www.honda. ca
