Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership on Wednesday decided to expel Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria and suspend bilateral trade with India in the wake of New Delhi’s move of revoking special status for Jammu and Kashmir. The decision was taken at a meeting of National Security Committee (NSC) - the second within a week - presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan to review the situation following the Indian government’s move on Kashmir. “We will call back our ambassador from Delhi and send back their envoy,” Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi separately announced in televised comments. He spoke as the government released a statement following the NSC meeting, declaring that Pakistan will suspend trade with India in a “downgrading of diplomatic ties”, review bilateral arrangements, take the matter to the UN and observe Pakistan’s Independence Day on August 14 in solidarity with Kashmiris. “The Prime Minister directed that all diplomatic channels be activated to expose brutal Indian racist regime, design and human rights violations,” said the statement issued after the meeting.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Foreign Minister Qureshi, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Zubair Hayat, Army chief, General Qamar Bajwa, Navy chief, Admiral Zafar Mehmood Abbasi, Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, ISI Director-General Lt Gen Faiz Hameed and other officials. “Independence Day this August 14 to be observed in solidarity with brave Kashmiris and their just struggle for their right of selfdetermination,” the statement read. “August 15 will be observed as Black Day,” the statement added. A joint parliamentary session also passed a resolution condemning New Delhi’s “unilateral move”. The resolution was presented by Kashmir Committee Chairman Syed Fakhar Imam and was passed unanimously, Dawn newspaper reported.

It condemned India’s “illegal, unilateral, reckless and coercive attempt to alter the disputed status of Indian occupied Kashmir as enshrined in the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions”. The resolution slammed “other regressive measures to change Kashmir’s demographic structure as well as the recent surge in unprovoked firing and shelling on unarmed civilian population across the Line of Control and use of cluster bombs by Indian forces in Azad Jammu and Kashmir”. The joint session also denounced the “deployment of additional troops and atrocities in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir and other recent developments”. It demanded that the communications blackout in “occupied Kashmir be lifted, the prolonged curfew regime be ended” and asked Indian to “honour its own commitment to the UNSC, Kashmiris and the international community”.

Jammu and Kashmir’s special status ends with abrogation of Article 370 New Delhi (IANS): President Ram Nath Kovind has declared abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, after Parliament passed a resolution in this regard. “All provisions of Indian Constitution as amended from time to time without any modifications or exceptions, shall apply to the state of Jammu and Kashmir notwithstanding anything contrary contained in Article 152 or Article 308 or any other article of this Constitution or any other provision of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir or any law, document, judgement, ordinance, order, by-law, rule, regulation, notification, custom or usage having the force of law in the territory of India, or any other instrument, treaty or agreement as envisaged under article 363 or otherwise,” the notification issued on Tuesday said. Article 370 had given special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370 and 35A collectively defined that the state’s residents live under a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship, ownership of property, and fundamental rights, as compared to the resident of other Indian states. It had also barred citizens from other states to purchase land or property in Jammu and Kashmir. Issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, the notification also said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (3) of Article 370 — which says the President may, by public notification, declare that this article shall cease to be operative or shall be operative only with such exceptions and modifications and from such date as he may specify — the President, on the recommendation of Parliament, is pleased to declare that, as from August 6, all clauses of the said Article 370 shall cease to be operative.” The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the resolution to abrogate Article 370. after the Rajya Sabha passed it on Monday.

Sushma Swaraj: A people’s politician

New Delhi (IANS): Just a few hours before she collapsed and died, former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had tweeted her thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for revoking Article 370 on Jammu and Kashmir. “Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime.” That was her last communication on the social media platform on which she had over 13 million followers. She was active on tweeting about major happenings, though she decided against contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections or on joining the Narendra Modi 2.0 government due to health reasons. Sushma, who died aged 67, tweeted her condolences on Congress leader Sheila Dikshit’s death on July 20, writing that though they were opponents in politics, but were friends in personal life. Sushma, who brought her innate grace and charm into her work, was not cowed by twitter trolls either. In fact, when one troll told her, that like Sheila Dikshit, she too would be remembered after her death, Sushma took it sportingly, tweeting back: “I thank you in anticipation for this kind thought.” Though she was overshadowed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who undertook the major trips and diplomatic dealings during her tenure as External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj did not retire into the shadows. She made her mark in her own way – connecting with the diaspora far and wide, and reaching out to help them. She would respond to every appeal for assistance, and make sure the Indian missions responded to the requests. In this way she gave the human touch to the Ministry of External Affairs, and won millions of admirers across the world, including many in Pakistan.

Sushma Swaraj Many Pakistani patients would appeal to her for medical visas via twitter, and Sushma would try to accommodate their requests. She would also connect with some of the Pakistanis who she helped get emergency medical visas. In 2017, she won admiration when she granted a year-long medical visa to a Pakistani girl Shireen Shiraz for an openheart surgery. As Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha, Sushma was a formidable and compelling speaker. She would attack the ruling Congress-led UPA without pulling any punches, and once Parliament was witness to a fierce poetic exchange between her and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Sushma, who was always attired in widebordered saris and donned a trademark big red bindi and sindoor, had carved a niche in the BJP through effective presentation of her views both inside and outside Parliament. Following the 2004 elections when the Congress was set to form the government and the name of Italian-born Sonia Gandhi was being touted as likely prime minister, Sushma threatened to shave her head, wear a white saree and eat groundnuts (symbolical of mourning) if Sonia became Prime Minister.

Married to Swaraj Kaushal, a former Mizoram Governor, Sushma had contested against Sonia in Bellary (Karnataka) during the 1999 Lok Sabha elections. While Gandhi polled 51.7 per cent of the vote, Sushma was not too far behind with 44.7 per cent. Though she lost the polls, Sushma moved up the party ladder. Born on February 14, 1952 at Ambala Cantonment, Sushma earned a B.A. degree in political science. She studied LL.B. in Panjab University, Chandigarh. She married Swaraj Kaushal on July 13, 1975, during the time of the Emergency. An advocate by profession, she began her political career as a student leader in the 1970s, organizing protests against Indira Gandhi’s government. She was associated with many social and cultural bodies in various capacities. She was President of the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Haryana for four years. She twice became MLA from Haryana during 1977-1982 and 1987-1990, and once from Delhi in 1998. As a Janata Party MLA in Devi Lal’s government, she was the Cabinet Minister of Labour and Employment (1977-1979) – becoming the youngest ever Cabinet Minister in the country at 25 years of age. She joined the BJP in 1980. Under a combined Lok DalBJP government led by Devi Lal, she was the Cabinet Minister of Education, Food and Civil Supplies (1987-1990). She was judged Best Speaker of Haryana State Assembly for three consecutive years. In 1980, 1984, and 1989, she unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from Karnal in Haryana. All three times, she was defeated by the Congress Party’s Chiranji Lal Sharma. She was elected as a member of the Rajya

Sabha in 1990. In 1996, she was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from South Delhi. She was Union Cabinet Minister of Information and Broadcasting in 1996, during the 13-day Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. She was re-elected to the 12th Lok Sabha for a second term in 1998. Under the second Vajpayee government, she retained the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and had additional charge of the Ministry of Telecommunications from March 19 to October 12, 1998. Sushma left the Union Cabinet from October-December 1998 to serve as the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi. The BJP lost the assembly elections, and she returned to national politics. Sushma returned to Parliament in April 2000 as a Rajya Sabha member from Uttarakhand. She was re-inducted into the cabinet as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, which she held from September 2000 until January 2003. She was also made the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, and held the post of Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. She was reelected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2006 from Madhya Pradesh. She served as the deputy leader of BJP in Rajya Sabha. In late 2005, speculation was high that Sushma was one of the top contenders to be BJP president after L.K. Advani resigned. However, Rajnath Singh was elected to that post. In 2009, Sushma won the election to the 15th Lok Sabha from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, by a record margin of 3.89 lakh [389,000] votes. She was made Deputy Leader of the Opposition in June 2009 in the Lok Sabha, and in December that year Sushma became the first woman Leader of the Opposition when she replaced Advani.

Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh to be Union Territories THE State of Jammu and Kashmir has been bifurcated into the union territories (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. India’s Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday proposed in the Rajya Sabha (India’s Upper House) to revoke Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir, ending the special status to the state. Shah moved the amendment amid uproar by opposition members. Shah said: “I am presenting the resolution

to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir except the first clause 370 (1).” Following his speech, amid bedlam, the House was adjourned. The UT of Ladakh will not have a legislature. An official statement said: “The Ladakh Division of the State of Jammu and Kashmir has a large area but is sparsely populated with very difficult terrain. There has been a longpending demand of the people of Ladakh to give it the status of a Union Territory to en-

Pakistan closes 3 air routes for Indian carriers – Flying time of around 50 flights will increase by about 10-15 minutes – Flying time for ultra long haul flights would increase by 2-3 hours New Delhi (IANS): Amid rising tension between India and Pakistan over the revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution ending special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad has closed down three out of nine air routes for Indian carriers. The move, second this year, would affect national carrier Air India’s flights going to Europe, the US, and Middle East among others. Flying time of around 50 flights will increase by about 10-15 minutes. “The major route which we use for our long haul flights are still open and hence the impact is not much right now but we have got initial inputs that the remaining air routes will be shut. “The impact will be huge as flying time for our ultra long haul flights using Pakistani air-

space would increase by 2-3 hours,” a senior Air India official told IANS. The flag carrier had suffered a massive loss of Rs 430 crore [Rs 4,300 million] due to another air space closure by Pakistan following the Balakot airstrike by the Indian Air Force in February. The current closure of air space is being seen as retaliation by Pakistan to India’s decision ending the autonomy given to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. On Wednesday, Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties with India and also suspended trade. It has also told India to withdraw its High Commissioner to Pakistan While the air space closure would affect Indian carriers, Pakistan is also expected to take a massive financial hit. During the

dented restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir. As soon as the lower House met and Speaker Om Birla read out a statement requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to modernize Parliament with new technology on completion of 75 years of Independence in 2022, the opposition, led by the Congress, raised the Kashmir issue. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury urged: “Sir, you should at least give us our rights (to speak).” The Speaker ignored the Congress plea following which members of opposition parties including the Congress, DMK, TMC, JKNC, RSP, AIMIM and SP were on their seat shouting “Dadagiri nahi chalegi”, “Tanasahi nahi chalegi”, “Prime Minister jawab do”, “We Want Justice” and “Stop Divide and Rule”. Later, the agitating members of the Congress, DMK, SP and RSP massed near the Speaker’s podium. But the TDP, BJD, BSP and YSR Congress members did not take part in the protest. Amid the din, the Speaker started proceedings of the House and amendments made by the Rajya Sabha in the National Medical Commission Bill, 2019 and the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill, 2019 were passed. The government later moved the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019 for its passage amid pandemonium. The Speaker then requested the opposition members to return to their seats. Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal urged the opposition members to go back to their seats and proposed that “our Defence Minister (Rajnath Singh) is ready to speak on any issue”. But the opposition continued their protest. IN the backdrop of the Centre’s decision to scrap Article 370 which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Home Ministry on Monday issued an advisory to all states to put security forces and law enforcement agencies on maximum alert. The order was sent to Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories, Directors General of Police and the Commissioner of Delhi Police soon after the Union Cabinet took the decision to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution and split Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir with an Assembly and Ladakh without one. As per the order, requisite measures may be taken to ensure that peace and communal amity is maintained in all parts of the country and special attention may be paid to communally sensitive areas. The order stressed that special care should be taken to ensure the safety and security of residents of Jammu and Kashmir, especially students, in various parts of the country. “Adequate publicity may be given to the measures taken by state governments, Union Territories to inspire confidence in the sections concerned and to sensitize the public against any mischief or breach of peace.” State governments and Union Territories were also told to tell their law enforcement

Kashmir under unprecedented lockdown, 8 million captive: Faesal New Delhi (IANS): Kashmir is experiencing an “unprecedented lockdown” with its entire eight million population “incarcerated like never before”, Kashmiri IAS

Kashmir. Taking to Facebook, Faesal, who quit the Indian Administrative Service in January this year citing “unabated killings” in Kashmir and set up a political party, posted: “Unprecedented horror in Kashmir. Everyone is heartbroken. A sense of defeat written on every face. Fall. “From citizens to subjects. History has taken a catastrophic turn for all of us. People are numb. A people whose land, identity, history, was stolen, in broad day light.” Faesal used both Facebook and Twitter to describing in detail the tight security in the Valley. “Kashmir is experiencing an unprecedented lock-down. From Zero Bridge to Airport some movement of vehicles is visible. Other places are completely out of bounds. Except for patients or those with a curfew pass.” He said it was not possible to reach prominent local politicians like Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Sajad Lone or send a mes-

sage to them, while in other districts, “curfew is all the more strict”. “You can say that the entire 8 million population has been incarcerated like never before. As of now there is no shortage of food and essentials,” he said. Citing sources in the administration, he said that satellite phones given to officers are being used to coordinate civil supplies and no other means of communication is available. “Those with Dish TV have access to news. Cable services are down. Many people still have a bleak idea of what happened. Radio was working till a few hours ago. Most people are watching DD. “National media is also not being allowed to move into interior areas,” he said. He said that the Lal Ded hospital is functioning beyond its capacity as expecting women are getting admitted days in advance to avoid any last moment hassles, while some people are planning to set up community kitchens there. Faesal said that no violent incident has been officially reported so far, while random incidents of stone throwing were reported from Rambagh, Natipora, Downtown, Kulgam, Anantnag. “But no news of any killings”. However, he said: “People are in shock. Numb. Yet to make sense of what befell them. Everyone is mourning what we lost. “In my conversations with people besides 370, it’s the loss of statehood that has hurt people deeply. This is being seen as the biggest betrayal by the Indian state in last 70 years.” Faesal said: “Few leaders who have escaped detention called for calm through TV channels. It is being said that the government is ready for a casualty figure of 8 - 10 thousand. So sanity demands that we don’t give anyone a chance for mass massacre. “My appeal has also been that let’s stay alive, then we shall fight back.” He also alleged that the body language of paramilitary personnel manning the security barricades is “extremely harsh” and the state police is “totally sidelined”. “One guy told an acquaintance of mine that now we are going to show your place to you. “Such stories of locals being bullied have reached me from many places. But its extremely heartening that Kashmiris are staying calm,” he added. He advised those who wish to travel to Kashmir to put it for some time, for even if restrictions are relaxed, the “situation will remain extremely volatile”. On the way ahead, he said: “At airport I met crowds of heartbroken youth asking me questions about what should we do now. “I said we shall go to Supreme Court together and ask for reversing this injustice. All political parties are together on challenging these unconstitutional laws that have deprived us of our history and identity.” He added that this was now the “only hope” as the “international community has shut its eyes”. “The sad fact of life is that only Narendra Modi and Amit Shah can one day give back to us the wealth that has been stolen from us in broad daylight. “But then what’s lost has been lost. Or Perhaps everything has been lost. Except our resolve to fight back. And we shall,” he said.

Hope Karatarpur Corridor not hit by ties downgrade: Amarinder Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday expressed concern over Pakistan’s decision to downgrade diplomatic ties with India over revocation of Article 370, hoping the move would not adversely impact the construction of the Kartarpur Corridor. Reacting to reports of Pakistan’s decision to expel the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad and to review ‘bilateral agreements’ with New Delhi, the Chief Minister described Islamabad’s reaction

as knee-jerk and uncalled for. Kashmir was an internal matter for India which was within its rights to take any decision with regard to the region, he said, adding that Islamabad should not have used this as an excuse to undermine its diplomatic relations with India. Pakistan’s decision was not in the interest of regional security, he said, warning that any such move to destabilise the fragile peace of the South Asian region would make the neighbouring country itself

vulnerable. At the same time, Amarinder Singh hoped these developments would not affect the Kartarpur Corridor and Pakistan would not hurt Sikh sentiments by putting the muchawaited corridor on hold. The decision to build the corridor to mark the historic occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak Dev had been welcomed by Sikhs all over the world and any move now to scuttle the project would leave millions of devotees dis-

Security tight in Punjab after revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir

Chandigarh (IANS): Amid apprehension of an adverse reaction from Pakistan to the developments in Kashmir, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday prohibited any kind of celebrations or protest that could vitiate the atmosphere in the border state. With tension escalating at the border, the Chief Minister directed the state police to be prepared to thwart any attempts by Pakistan to create disturbance in Punjab. The Chief Minister was reviewing the law and order situation in the state in the wake of the revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir.

Top police and civil brass attended the review meeting here which took note of the volatile situation post the central government’s announcement on Kashmir. Pakistan may not take this lightly and could resort to some acts against India, the Chief Minister warned, asking the state police to be ready for any eventuality. Amarinder ordered increased security for the 8,000-odd Kashmiri students in the state, and directed the Superintendents of Police and the Deputy Commissioners to meet them and talk to them personally. The Chief Minister, who is personally monitoring the situ-

The Patiala police said Kaur was in Delhi last week to attend the monsoon session of Parliament when she got the fraud call. He sought

ation, ordered scaling up of security in districts that border Kashmir. He reiterated his earlier directions to the police and the district administration to ensure smooth and safe movement for those leaving Kashmir via Punjab. The border areas of the state have been on heightened alert for the past two days, since tourists and Amarnath yatris were asked to leave the Kashmir Valley over security concerns. He also appealed to all, within and outside Kashmir, to remain calm and not do anything to disturb the peace and harmony of the nation.

As she shared her bank transaction details, she received an SMS from the bank saying Rs 23 lakh have been withdrawn from her account. She immediately informed the cyber cell of the police, which traced the caller to Ranchi in Jharkhand. Senior Superintendent of Police Mandeep Singh Sidhu said the fraudster was arrested along with a few others and the investigation was on.

appointed, he said. Political considerations should not be allowed to overshadow the religious feelings of the Sikhs for whom the Kartapur Gurudwara stands out as a symbol of reverence, said the Chief Minister. Amarinder Singh urged the Indian government also to take up the matter with Islamabad on priority and ensure that the

development of the Kartarpur Corridor remains on track, notwithstanding the diplomatic and other developments between the two nations in the wake of the revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir. Both countries could take adequate steps to ensure that the corridor’s progress and security is not jeopardised in the light of Pakistan’s decision

to scale down diplomatic relations and suspend trade ties with India, he said. Kartarpur had nothing to do with Kashmir or any other issue of concern for the two countries, he said, adding that the 550th ‘Prakash Purb’ was a momentous event with enormous importance for the people of India, especially the Sikhs.

Akshay is one of the most hardworking actors: Katrina New Delhi (IANS): Actress Katrina Kaif, who is all set to reunite with Akshay Kumar on screen in the upcoming film “Sooryavanshi”, says the National Award-winning actor is one of the most hardworking actors she knows. “Akshay is one of the most hardworking actors

I know. In fact I learnt so much from him -- the dedication, the punctuality. It also helps that he has a great sense of humour,” Katrina told IANS. “Sooryavanshi” brings back Katrina and Akshay together after nine years. The two have previously worked in films such as

“Namastey London”, “Sing Is Kinng”, “Humko Deewana Kar Gaye”, “Welcome” and “Tees Maar Khan”. “Sooryavanshi” is the new addition in director Rohit Shetty’s cop drama universe after the two “Singham” films and “Simmba”. In “Sooryavanshi”, Akshay

essays the role of Veer Suryavanshi, a character introduced as an anti-terrorist squad officer in the 2018 “Simmba”, starring Ranveer Singh. The movie, which is scheduled to hit the screens on March 27, 2020, also stars Gulshan Grover.

‘Aisha’ was a crazy adventure: Sonam Kapoor Actress Sonam Kapoor says her film “Aisha”, which has completed nine years of its release in Hindi cinema, was “crazy adventure”. Sonam on Tuesday shared a small video from the film on Instagram. “’Aisha’ was less a role for me and more like a best friend. This movie is close to my heart as are the people associated with it. Be it goofing around on sets, shooting at different locations, or just playing our

parts, it definitely was a crazy adventure. Happy nine years ‘Aisha’,” Sonam wrote, as caption of her video. “Aisha”, directed by Rajshree Ojha, also stars Abhay Deol, Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh, Ira Dubey and Amrita Puri. The film is set in the upper class society of Delhi, and is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel “Emma”. It bears the same tone as the 1995 cult Hollywood film “Clueless”, which was also adapted from Austen’s novel.

THE DOCTOR GAME – W. GIFFORD-JONES M.D.

North American diet a recipe for blindness HOW often have we been warned, we are what we eat? Now, a book by Dr. Chris Knobbe, “Ancestral Dietary Strategy to Prevent and Treat Macular Degeneration”, is an eyeopener. Knobbe claims doctors have been taught for years that macular degeneration “MD” is due to aging and genetics but it’s an absolute untruth. Rather, he claims the leading cause of blindness in North America is due to the garbage we’re eating. “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their

eyes” was a military command given to British soldiers long ago. But if these soldiers had MD they would not have fired a single shot. MD destroys the macular, a tiny spot on the retina responsible for central vision. Dr. Knobbe, an ophthalmologist, reports that before 1925 there were about 50 cases of MD in the world’s medical literature. But by 1975, 8.8 percent of Americans over the age of 50 had this disease. to processed foods, vegetable oils and sugar. This means switching to eating unprocessed whole foods including wild-caught seafood, organic grass-fed beef, pasteurized pork and fowl. And fast food restaurants are off limits. He adds that bone broth is helpful and since MD patients are deficient in vitamin A, D, and K2, they need a tablespoon of extra virgin cod liver oil twice a week. Will North Americans heed this advice about the garbage we’re eating? I hope some readers listen, as preventable blindness is a tragedy. So add more fish, meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds to the diet. This can help to prevent macular degeneration, and a host of other chronic disabling conditions. McGill University, once commented only a doctor who has a particular disease really understands it. In this case Knobbe, who suffered from arthritis for 15 years, heard about the Paleo Diet. Then after 10 days of following it, he noticed his pain was 80 percent improved! Obviously, he wanted to understand why. First, he discovered the research of Dr. Weston A. Price, a dentist. Price reported that people who consumed refined white flour, sugar, canned goods, sweets, and vegetable oils developed diseases of civilization such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and all the autoimmune disorders. Price found that native, traditional foods contain 10 times as many fat soluble vitamins A, D, and K2, four times as many water soluble vitamins such as all the B vitamins and C, and one and a half to 60 times more minerals than today’s diet. Dr. Knobbe asked himself, “Could macular degeneration also be the result of poor nutrition?” This changed the course of his life. He discovered that MD was strongly associated with heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. And that MD, and these diseases, once rare, are now of epidemic proportions. Knobbe claims the change is due to the introduction of processed oils and refined flour. Today, 20 percent of the North American diet is wheat, and 85 percent of it is refined and nutrient deficient. Add to this sugar, trans fats and the most dangerous of all, polyunsaturated vegetable oils. All this garbage supplies 63 percent of our diet! Dr. Knobbe now urges doctors to stop attributing MD to aging and genetics. Rather, look at the facts. In 1961, North Americans were consuming 9 grams daily of polyunsaturated vegetable oils. By 2000, it increased to 40 grams daily. This is not just a North American problem. Knobbe’s research shows that the same situation exists in New Zealand and Japan. It is obvious that something has gone terribly wrong. So what can consumers do? Knobbe says a good start is to start saying no

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: World’s largest selling plug-in hybrid SUV. By Autoreviewman An interesting fact is the five-seat Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) is actually the world’s best-selling plug-in compact hybrid. Mitsubishi has shifted over 200,000 Outlander PHEVs in the last five years- and over 5,000 in Canada since it went on sale here in 2018, an incredible feat. The Outlander PHEV comes in two plug-in editions, the SE and the GT. Both are powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine working in tandem with two 60 kW electric motors, one working on the front wheels and the other on the rear wheels. The PHEV can cruise up to 22 kilometres on electric-only driving, before it switches over the gasoline engine. Using a 220-volt outlet, the Outlander takes 2.5 hours to fully recharge via it’s on board external charging port. The two electric

The drive battery gets by from an on-board generator that converts mechanical power to electricity and regenerative braking — the level of regenerative braking can be selected by the driver using steering wheel paddle shifters. 2019 Volvo XC90 T8 Hybrid PHEV: Premium European SUV is classy all the way By Autoreviewman Chinese owner Geely Auto have diluted, messed about or interfered with storied Swedish automaker Volvo and it shows. The Swedish automaker has been making some very impressive vehicles that remain distinctly “Volvo-ish.” Take in case the Volvo XC90. The big premium Swedish SUV. Even coming round a corner or seeing it on the road, the XC90 looks exotic, European and expensive. The XC90 T8 as tested is a

plug-in hybrid model with a power output of 400 hp and 472 lb-ft from the engine and electric motor that’s available from 2,200 rpm. The engine drives the front wheels while the electric motor powers the rear, which gives the T8 an all-wheel-drive capability. The electric motor can propel the XC90 at speeds of up to 120 km/h. Charging the main battery takes 2.5 hours using 220 volts, and around eight hours on 110 volts. Once fully

recharged, it delivers an electric-only driving range of around 30 kilometres. There are several driving modes, which include Pure, Hybrid, Power, Offroad, All-wheel-drive and Individual. As usual safety is high and the Volvo XC90 offers comprehensive safety systems include active LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation front and rear, lane keeping assist, blind spot and cross traffic alert

With a range of 415 kilometres, Hyundai’s Kona Electric is a Game Changer

By Autoreviewman The new 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric Vehicle may be a little fashionably late to the subcompact CUV party- but arrives drawing a lot of attention. For a start it kills any inkling of range anxiety once and for all — with its all-electric range of 415 kilometres it’s theoretically possible that you may need to recharge the battery just once a week. Under ideal driving conditions with lots of regenerative braking, close to 500 kilometres would be tantalizingly close.

The Kona EV is a pure electric vehicle- not a hybrid. There is charging port and that’s it. No gas to worry about forever! The Kona Electric is powered by a 150kW electric motor with a single speed Shift by

Wire transmission and a 64kWh lithium-ion battery — that takes about 9.5 hours to fully recharge using a 220-volt outlet. There is 201 horsepower and, an impressive 291 lb.-ft. of torque that al-

lows the Kona to accelerate very quickly. The Kona look really cool, with its neat smart design. And Equipment levels are excellent across the board. The full-load, no-options needed, ultimate model offers ($51,999) also adds leather seats which are cooled up front, an 8-inch display screen, an Infiniti audio system and more. Interior wise, the Kona’s cabin offers a smart nicely crafted look. No gloomy black cabin here, Instead the interior is

light colored with nice metal trim. With enough room for four adults or five at push, there are comfortable seats and good visibility. Everything looks well finished, durable, and well put together. On the road, The Kona EVs performance is impressive, peak torque is available instantly, with a 0- to 100 km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds. That’s superb performance for an electric car at this price point. To sum up, Hyundai delivers a very creditable CUV that offer the excellent advantage

of an all- electric car without the range anxiety, with its 400 plus range. It fun to drive, is fasts as a unique look to it and all the technology buyers expect. The Kona is affordable as far as electric cars go and is also eligible for provincial land federal incentives. Demand is expected to go through the roof for this car so get in there quick! 2019 Hyundai Kona EV Priced from $44, 999 - $51,999) WEBSITE: Hyundai Canada.ca.

High-performance 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat and Scat Pack Widebody Windsor, Ontario - Dodge is literally expanding its high-performance Charger models for 2020, adding a Widebody Package to America’s only four-door muscle car. Powered by the proven supercharged 6.2-litre HEMI® Hellcat V-8 engine, the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody boasts a best-in-class 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers a top speed of 315 kilometres per hour (196 miles per hour), maintaining its reign as the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world. The Widebody Package, stan-

dard on Charger SRT Hellcat and available on Charger Scat Pack, includes new integrated fender flares that add 8.8 centimetres (3.5 inches) of body width, creating an even more aggressive, planted stance. The

flares make room for the wider 20-inch by 11-inch wheels and Pirelli 305/35ZR20 tires, Brembo six-piston front calipers with two-piece front brake rotors, and unique suspension tuning with Bilstein three-mode adap-

tive damping, all combining to deliver improved performance on the street, strip and road course. “People say, ‘no one wants cars anymore.’ I would tell you that the 40,000 people who bought a Dodge Charger so far this year would probably agree, because to them, the Charger isn’t just a car. The Charger’s reach extends beyond bodystyle practicalities and it can’t be defined by average industry shifts,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “Can you buy a vehicle that is dollar for dol-

lar more practical than a Charger Widebody? Absolutely, but there are also more than 1,000 flavours of ice cream and vanilla is only one of them. If the ‘average’ person will own six cars in their lifetime, our cars need to connect so strongly that people can’t help but turn around and take a second look before walking away.” With a top speed of 315 kilometres per hour (km/h) 196 miles per hour (mph), the Charger SRT Hellcat maintains its claim as the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world. The Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody also

features an SRT-tuned Bilstein three-mode adaptive damping competition suspension, new Electric Power Steering (EPS), stiffer springs, larger sway bars, retuned shocks, several race-inspired technologies and Brembo brakes, all designed to deliver performance numbers never before seen on a Charger. Canadian dealers will be able to order 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody and Scat Pack Widebody models this fall. The new Charger Widebody models will start arriving in Dodge//SRT dealerships in early 2020.

three drive modes. Pure mode uses only the electric motor good for around 30 km until the gas engine kicks in. The default mode is Hybrid which ensures efficiency and performance across the drive trains. Achieving the claimed consumption figures will depend on your driving style and the hybrid system is

most effective in city driving situation. According to official claims, the XC90 T8 is one of the most frugal and green large SUVs on sale. Nothing too bad to write about the XC90. It is a superbly executed premium European SUV, and the high price reflect that with its high equipment list, engineering and safety. How-

ever lucky owners who can stump up the cash will not be disappointed as it is right up there with the German competition and excels in many areas. Superb in so many ways 2019 Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV Priced from $73,000 More info at Volv0.ca
