THE amazing feature at Glasgow, Scotland, capped months of diligent training and a singleminded push to display the very best at the pinnacle of competitive pipe band competition. Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band were named champions at the Worlds on August 17. The band emerged on the top for overall drumming as well as best parade. This is the second time the Malaysian band took part in the world series organized by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. When asked why they decided to make the trip to the World Championships Drum Sergeant Tripert Singh said: “It is because we wanted to give the youth of Malaysia the opportunity to dream, and achieve those dreams. It was to show the world that Malaysia too, has world class musicians.” Up to 8,000 pipers and drummers from 195 bands converged at the Glasgow Green on August 16 and

17 for the championship. The bands were from 13 countries: New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, United States, Belgium, England, Spain, Malaysia, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Sri Dasmesh – named after the tenth Guru of the Sikhs and the only Sikh pipe band at the event, was formed in 1986 by brothers Sukdev Singh and Harvinder Singh. It was

started as a youth development program providing the youth with a healthy platform to be involved in. The passion project initially aimed to develop the leadership skills of the Sikh youth, progressed professionally into the pipe band scene, and today have made their mark on the world stage. The World Championship winning band was led by Pipe Major Tirath Singh (age 22),

Drum Sergeant Tripert Singh (age 25) and Mid-Section Head Sukhpreet Kaur (age 22). Tirath Singh and Tripert Singh are brothers who work for Malaysia Airlines as pilots. Sukhpreet is an amazing young professional currently completing her degree in Mechanical Engineering at Herriot Watt University. Together, they led the band through 13 months of tireless practice. They met three times a week for two hours or more each session at the Sri Dasmesh International School. Tripert and Tirath say that this is the band’s gift to the country for their Independence Day and hope that all Malaysians, especially the Sikh community, will hold their heads high in pride because Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band raised the Malaysian flag in Scotland as champions beating the best of the best and by bringing home the silverware.

New Delhi (IANS): The government is in the process of preparing a list of Jammu and Kashmir politicians to be released as they are under “preventive detention” in the erstwhile state since abrogation of Article 370, said sources. The move will be implemented in a phased manner and around 200 politicians as well as activists are likely to be released in the first phase in September, said a source. “The names are under consideration and a decision will be taken soon,” the source said requesting anonymity.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has engaged its officials under close coordination with Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Additional Secretary (J&K Division) Gyanesh Kumar. The process started after a Central team comprising intelligence officials, including Intelligence Bureau Chief Arvind Kumar, returned from the state last week after meeting former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti in the state. Both Abdullah and Mehbooba are under detention since Centre’s August 5 announcement of

scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution which gave special status to the erstwhile state. Sources said the team comprising senior Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officials have sent a report to the Home Ministry after their meeting with Jammu and Kashmir leaders in the Valley. The Central team had camped in Srinagar for two days and returned on August 23. As the special team largely focused on discussion over easing the return of the leaders back into

the Valley, the Ministry is planning how many leaders should be released in the first phase and whom to be released first, said the source. While Omar Abdullah is in Hari Niwas Palace, Mehbooba Mufti has been put up in Chashme Shahi. It is learnt that the leaders after their release from preventive detention might not be allowed to organize any public rally. The leaders are learnt to be allowed only to meet their relatives, political leaders and people in their areas, said the source.

After Modi-Trump meet, Pakistan’s isolation on Kashmir is complete

New Delhi (IANS): With US President Donald Trump backing off from his offer to mediate, which Islamabad had been eagerly clinging on to, and with the other global leaders too unwilling to back it, including those from the Muslim world, Pakistan’s isolation on the international arena on Kashmir appears complete. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday firmly conveyed to President Donald Trump that it does not welcome a third-party mediation on Kashmir, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan turned belligerent. In a special address to the nation, timed as the ModiTrump talks were slated, and perhaps sensing the way the talks in Biarritz, France, would go, Khan said that Islamabad’s Kashmir policy was at a “decisive” point and slammed India for playing what he called “its last card” and vowed to “take the next step”. Khan said he will raise the Kashmir issue at every international forum, including at the UN General Assembly. He assured the people of Pakistan that his government will stand by the Kashmiris till India lifts the restrictions in the Valley. Khan also said that though Islamic nations are silent on Kashmir, they would have to speak up at some time. For Pakistan, the Muslim world’s backing of India, with the UAE and Bahrain, two important members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, welcoming with open arms Modi to their countries this week, has come as a

hands after the meeting was tweeted by the PMO on Sunday night. The successful meeting between Modi and the UN chief came after Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi called up Guterres to apprise him about the “evolving and delicate situation” in Jammu and Kashmir. Qureshi said it was the

bitter pill — a reminder that India with its stable economy and forward-looking policies is a favoured nation. The UAE’s conferment of the Order of Zayed, the Gulf nation’s highest civilian honour, on Modi has added to the sense of bewilderment in Islamabad, that Islam cannot be considered the sole binding force anymore, and that countries are looking beyond the confines of religion to the an open, inclusive, progressive world order. “I read in newspapers that people are disappointed that Muslim countries are not siding with Kashmir. I want to tell you not to be disappointed; if some countries are not raising this issue because of their economic interests, they will eventually take it up. They will have to, with time,” Khan said. In an effort to claim some modicum of victory, after going on a diplomatic overdrive to raise the Kashmir issue with almost every major world leader, Imran said that Pakistan had succeeded in internationalising the Kashmir issue.

“We have succeeded in internationalizing the issue of Kashmir, we talked to world leaders and embassies. The UN for the first time since 1965, convened a meeting on Kashmir issue. Even international media has picked it up,” he said. But he forgot to mention that the UN Security Council held a closed-door meeting, on China’s insistence, in which it endorsed India’s moves on Kashmir, and its development agenda after revoking its special status. Only China spoke against India at the permanent five meet. Even Khan’s regular tweets on Kashmir and his labelling of Modi as a “fascist, racist, Hindu supremacist” leader have failed to get him the international traction he has wanted. While Khan says he will raise the Kashmir issue at the UN General Assembly summit in September, Modi met UN Secretary Antonio Guterres on Sunday, on the sidelines of the G7 summit, and held “fruitful discussions” with him. responsibility of the international community to play a role in addressing the Kashmir situation. Significantly, when Modi was asked about Kashmir at the media briefing at Biarritz, France, alongside Trump, he said: “India and Pakistan have several bilateral issues. And after the election of Prime Minister Imran

Khan, I told him that both our countries suffer from the problems of poverty, illiteracy, backwardness and both should work together for the betterment of our people. This message I gave to the Pakistan Prime Minister, and I have conveyed this to President Trump as well, as we keep discussing our bilateral issues.”

Jammu and Kashmir situation not normal: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi / Srinagar (IANS): Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday slammed the government for not allowing a delegation of opposition parties to visit Kashmir, saying it indicated that the things in Valley are not normal. A delegation of 12 leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, was detained soon after it landed at the Srinagar airport. They were made to wait at the airport be-

fore they were sent back by another flight to Delhi. They landed back in Delhi around 6:45 p.m. In Delhi, Rahul Gandhi told reporters that a few days back he was invited by the Governor to visit J&K and that he had accepted his invitation. “We wanted to get a sense of what people are going through, but we were not allowed beyond the airport.”

Hitting out at the government, the Congress leader said, “Press people with us were badly handled and beaten. It is clear that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is not normal.” According to Congress leaders, the delegation wanted to visit the Valley to take stock of the situation. The Valley has been placed under security lockdown since August 5, when Ar-

ticle 370 was abrogated. Besides Rahul Gandhi, the delegation comprised Communist Party of India leader D. Raja, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechury, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and K.C. Venugopal, Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) Chief Sharad Yadav, Trinamool Congress leader Dinesh Trivedi, DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Majeed Memon, RJD’s Manoj Jha and Janata Dal Secular’s D. Kupendra Reddy. Earlier in the day, when the Opposition party leaders were detained, Rahul had told the Srinagar administration that the Government had invited him to visit the state. “Now when I have come, you are telling that I am not allowed. That is a bit surprising,” he said. “The government is saying everything is normal here. If that’s the case, then it’s quite surprising that we are not allowed to go out,” he said. The Congress leader then said: “We want to go to any area which is peaceful, talk to 5-10 people… if Section 144 is imposed, then I am ready to go individually, not in a group.” The J&K administration had on Friday advised the leaders to stay away from the region,

saying attempts should not be made to disturb the gradual restoration of normalcy in the state. The opposition delegation’s move came almost three weeks after the Centre abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution that accorded special status to J&K. Before leaving for Srinagar, CPI’s D. Raja said they were not going to the Valley to create any law and order problem. Congress’s Azad also echoed similar views. “The government says situation in J&K is normal. But then they don’t allow leaders to visit? Haven’t seen such a contradiction. If things are normal there, why aren’t we allowed to visit?” Azad asked. “We are citizens of the country. So is everyone in J&K. We are not among those who can

make things difficult for anyone. We just want to see the situation on the ground,” Sharad Yadav told reporters. On August 8 too, Azad was sent back from the Srinagar airport. Similarly, CPI and CPI-M General Secretaries Raja and Yechury, respectively, were also detained at the airport and then sent back. Earlier in the month Rahul Gandhi and J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik entered into a war of words on Twitter. The Governor had said Rahul was responding to “fake news” and trying to politicise the situation. The Governor on August 12 offered to send Rahul by an aircraft to visit the Valley and see for himself the ground situation, to which the Congress leader had said he didn’t need an aircraft, but freedom to travel and meet the people.

No SPG cover for former Indian PM Manmohan Singh

New Delhi (IANS): The government has withdrawn the Special Protection Group (SPG) security cover of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, officials said on Monday. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Manmohan Singh will have a Z + security cover after a rou-

tine assessment taking the inputs of all the agencies. “The current security cover review is a periodical and professional exercise based on threat perception that is purely based on professional assessment by security agencies. Manmohan Singh continues to have a Z+ security cover,” a senior MHA

official said. The elite SPG force, which guards the country’s most protected politicians, will now be tasked with guarding only four people — Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Punjab Congress slams Swamy for call to halt Kartarpur corridor

Chandigarh (IANS): Eight Punjab Congress legislators, comprising two cabinet ministers, on Sunday hit out at BJP MP Subramanian Swamy over his remarks that the work on the Kartarpur corridor should be stopped in the interest of the nation. The leaders slammed Swamy, saying his comments on the Kartarpur corridor had hurt sentiments of the Sikhs. In a joint press statement, Ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, besides legislators, said the BJP-ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) must clear their stand

on the issue. “The entire Punjab, especially the Sikh circle, knows it too well that the Badal family loves to cling to power rather than working for Sikh interests,” they said. The silence of the SAD on various issues, including the opposition to the corridor by a BJP leader, “proved that it was hand in glove with the BJP in this sin”, they said. “It was part of a deep-rooted conspiracy that Swamy gave this statement (on Saturday) in Chandigarh. Now, the cat has come out of the bag and the Punjab BJP leadership must

Swamy had on Saturday said the work on the Kartarpur corridor should be stopped in the interest of the nation. Clarifying the party’s stand on the issue, state BJP President Shwait Malik told the media that this was Swamy’s personal opinion. Reacting to the statement by the Congress leaders, Akali Dal national spokesperson Manjinder Singh Sirsa blamed Chief Minister Amarinder Singh for planting the seeds of doubt about the Kartarpur corridor. “It was always Congress which hurt the goodwill gesture done for Sikhs,” Sirsa, who is the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Committee President, tweeted. “Sukhjinder Randhawa, Bharat Bhushan Ashu & other Congress leaders need to come clean on their stand on Kartarpur corridor,” he added. Last month, Pakistan agreed in principle to allow visa-free, year-long travel to the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara for Indian passport holders and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card holders via the upcoming 4.2-km-long corridor, which is scheduled to be opened by October 31, a week before the celebrations to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

New Delhi (IANS): Former finance minister Arun Jaitley passed away at AIIMS on Saturday due to a prolonged illness. He was 66. Jaitley had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on August 9 after he complained of breathlessness. His condition had steadily deteriorated, and he was put on life support. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart underwent dialysis on Thursday. He is survived by his wife Sangeeta, daughter Sonali, and son Rohan. “It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Member of Parliament at 12.07 p.m. on Saturday. Jaitley was treated by a multi-disciplinary team of senior doctors,” said Aarti Vij, Chairperson, Media and Protocol, AIIMS. The veteran BJP leader served as Finance Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previous Cabinet from 2014 to 2018. He was also the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from 2009 to 2014. During his stint in the Finance Ministry, Jaitley was instrumental in implementing the Goods and Service Tax (GST) aimed at streamlining India’s indirect tax structure. It was also during his tenure that the controversial decision of demonetisation was taken. Jaitley’s body was moved to his home in Kailash Colony where leaders cutting across the political spectrum arrived to pay their tributes. Delhi Police barricaded the area around his house in view of the expected increase in VVIP and VIP movement. Among those who arrived at the house to pay their last re-

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani, Hardeep Puri, Jitender Singh, Anurag Thakur, and BJP leaders Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Manoj Tiwari, and Ramesh Bidhuri were among those who rushed to AIIMS after hearing the news of Jaitley’s demise. Condolences poured in for Jaitley who was one of Prime Minister Modi’s most trusted colleagues and an accomplished lawyer. President Ram Nath Kovind said that Jaitley’s death leaves a huge void in the intellectual ecosystem. “A brilliant lawyer, a seasoned parliamentarian, and a distinguished minister, he contributed immensely to nation building,” Kovind tweeted. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu said Jaitley’s death is an irreparable loss to the nation. Naidu, who was to leave from Chennai to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, cut short his visit and is returning to Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi, who is in the UAE, said he has lost a valued friend and that the BJP and Jaitley shared an unbreakable bond. “BJP and Arun Jaitley ji had an unbreakable bond. As a fiery student leader, he was at the forefront of protecting our democracy during the Emergency. He became a much liked face of our party who could articulate the party programmes and ideology to a wide spectrum of society.” “I have lost a valued friend whom I have had the honour of knowing for decades. His insight on issues and nuanced understanding of matters had very few parallels. He lived well, leaving us all with innumerable happy memories. We will miss him!” Modi said. Union Home Minister Shah described it as a personal loss and recalled Jaitley’s contribution during Modi’s first term (201419) in making India the world’s fastest growing economy. Big B to divide property equally between son and daughter

Mumbai (IANS): Bollywood Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has revealed that his property will be divided equally between his son Abhishek and daughter Shweta. The veteran often expresses love for his daughter on social media, and now, the ‘Beti

Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign ambassador has said that Abhishek alone will not have the full authority to his property. Recently, on being asked about his will, Amitabh revealed that his property will be divided equally between both his children, “timesofindia.indiatimes.

com” reported. Earlier this year, Amitabh penned a heartfelt post for Shweta as her debut novel “Paradise Towers” had become one of the bestselling fiction books. Praising Shweta for the achievement, Big B took to so-

Amazon Prime keen to cast Amitabh Bachchan

Mumbai (IANS): One of India’s leading digital content platforms, Amazon Prime, has expressed eagerness to bring Amitabh Bachchan on board in one of its shows. Recently, Amitabh Bachchan had expressed his interest to work in the digital platform and Amazon Prime have heard him. At a press conference recently, the megastar was asked whether he would be keen to explore the digital platform as an actor, to which he had replied: “I am eager to work in the digital platform. Very nice web series are being made both in India and other countries. I would love to work in such series if someone approaches me.” When IANS conveyed Big B’s words to the creative heads of Amazon Prime, Vijay Subramaniam (Vice President, content and communications) and Aparna Purohit (Head of India Originals) during an event, both of them looked quite excited and immediately expressed their eagerness to create a story that fits the megastar’s stature. Commenting on the same, Aparna told IANS: “Sure, we hear him! But, for us, everything begins with a good story, how passionate the storyteller is about that story and what is the best way we can translate that story on screen and then whatever it takes to make that story relevant, exciting and engaging.” Vijay Subramaniam added: “We would love to do something with him! It’s just (about) finding the right story that fits not only his stature but also something that is of interest to him.” Amitabh Bachchan’s son Abhishek Bachchan has already associated with Amazon Prime for the second season of the web series “Breathe,” which marks the actor’s debut in the digital platform. The second season is expected to premiere soon. On the other hand, Amazon Prime is all set to launch their youth-based reality show “Skulls And Roses” featuring twin brothers Raghu Ram and Rajiv Lakshman as the hosts. Talking about the unique title of the reality show, Vijay said: “I think it is the contrast that we are trying to show, and you will see that when you watch the show. Inherently there is a conflict

between these two facades in a young person’s life. Romance necessarily means sacrifice, compromise, togetherness and balance. It includes somebody else. While materialism necessarily means excluding everyone else and focusing on self. That inherent conflict has been captured in a very entertaining way, set in these two worlds. Metaphorically, it is the world of skulls, which will always be very survivalist and the world of roses, which is really beautiful, fragrant and soft.” “Skulls And Roses” is set to premiere on August 30 on Amazon Prime Video.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Inshallah won’t be shelved: With the announcement that Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Salman Khan have parted ways, the spin doctors of entertainment journalism are having a field day. #InshallahSanjay Leela Bhansali’s Inshallah won’t be shelved. We shall let the speculators have their fun. But the one fact that emerges from the haze of hypothesis, which I can most definitely share, is that Inshallah will be made. A source close to the project says, “There is no question of shelving the project. Sanjay Bhansali has invested a year of his life preparing to shoot what he feels is one of the purest love stories to have been made in this country. He cannot let it go.” Sources say Alia Bhatt who plays the female lead in Inshallah has extended all her co-operation to the project. “It was her dream to work with SLB. There is no way she can bear the thought of that dream being shattered,” says the source.

Mission Mangal Movie Review: Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan are heart and soul of this space entertainer a pressing problem in one night after being shouted at by Akshay. Sharman Joshi has a couple of hilarious punch-lines, that actually make the intense moments lighter. Mission Mangal knows that it needs to cater to the masses as well, so it strives to go easy on the scientific explanations, and puts it in comprehensible words. If it is a scientific film at one point, it is also a mass entertainer the next. Director Jagan Shakti knows what his audience needs from an Akshay Kumar film. Shakti works hard to ensure that the film does not lose control at points and tries to keep the balance between showing the personal lives and the professional lives of the scientists, at the risk of coming across slightly fragmented at points. The second half has all your attention, and the final climax is a nail-biting finish, though you But that is IMPOSSIBLE--- This is a recurring line throughout Mission Mangal, and practically every character says it emphatically with an air of despair. But you forget, when you have Akshay Kumar around with a very fiercely determined Vidya Balan, how is anything impossible? And so, that’s what Mission Mangal is all about, achieving the unthinkable. The film tells the inspiring tale of India’s first Mars Mission, Mangalyaan, which was launched in 2013. Mission Mangal begins with the failure of GLSV Fat Boy, and Akshay heroically taking the blame for someone else’s mistake. And so, he is shunted over to the Mars Mission, which no one expects anything from. But Akshay, who plays the role of Rakesh Dhawan is seemingly chilled. He doesn’t believe in wasting a laddoo and enjoys humming cryptic songs about failure. He is a quirky scientist, with the heart and mind of Akshay Kumar as he doesn’t mind jumping across tables to prove a point or telling some painful bad jokes, reminiscent of his Housefull stints. Not all jokes though, Akshay is best when he is snarky. Nevertheless, his interest in the Mars Mission is reignited after seeing Vidya Balan’s unfailing enthusiasm to make it a resounding success. It is far from easy, as apart from scientific challenges they are faced with a cynical Dalip Tahil, who is the closest to being a villain in the film. He is from NASA and he thinks he is the cat’s whiskers. But, as Akshay says coolly, you need a strong opposition party to push you to victory (Yes, we got the hint there, Akshay). Tahil gives them a team of inexperienced and new scientists, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen and Sharman Joshi. The film shows how this team of initially disinterested and troubled scientists finally achieve the impossible. The film’s trailers and posters received much flak as Akshay Kumar seemed to have the most prominence, as compared to the women. To be honest, while the film initially does seem to play up Akshay in every way, Vidya is keen to not let that happen. There is a tough competition between the two on who can give more motivational analogies to their team, along with Akshay’s trademark dose of patriotic speeches, though slightly subtle this time. Using the example of fried puris and innumerable cricket metaphors, they explain rocket science to you, at the risk of even oversimplification. There is no doubt that Vidya shines in her role and at times even Akshay seems to consciously move to the background and charitably lets her take over. It is a shame that the ever-reliable Taapsee takes the back seat and Nithya Menen remains quiet like her character with hardly any discernible personality traits. Sonakshi plays the role of a woman who has more faith in NASA than ISRO, and it takes a couple of empowering speeches from Vidya and Akshay to change that. No really, she discovers the solution to

obviously know what is going to happen. The visual effects of the Mars orbit have been done brilliantly, with the appropriate music to match the tension as well. It is fascinating to see the journey of the satellite’s journey from Earth to Mars. This is one of the film’s strongest points. There are not too many songs in the film, which is actually a relief. Songs like Shabaashiyan give the film a pleasant feel. Despite its flaws of excessive sermons and some crucial characters like Taapsee and Kirti not fleshed out completely, Mission Mangal makes for an entertaining Independence Day watch. That seems to be how the director intended it as well, a space-entertainer, rather than a hardcore scientific film. The flight might face some turbulence but it lands well.

Where car insurance is heading. From September 2019, we’re moving to an insurance model that’s more driver-based. This means how long you’ve been driving for and your crash history will play a bigger role in determining premiums. Plus, if someone causes a crash in your car, it’ll go on their driving record, not yours. With this shift, all drivers will be held more accountable for their driving decisions. How does our longevity compare with MLB players? we’re doing wrong. His study also shows that MLB players have a lower death rate than those playing in the National Football League. The football player’s downfall is becoming a victim of neurodegenerative diseases and heart problems. This part of Weisskopf ’s study isn’t shocking. Rather it further confirms other studies on brain trauma. I’ve never seen MLB players butt heads like mountain rams. Unlike hockey players, they never try to decapitate their opponent’s heads on the ice or hurl them into the boards of an arena. But Weisskopf ’s research also verifies that parental common sense about brain injury in football or hockey is valid. After all, why would anyone believe it makes sense to repeatedly traumatize the head, whatever way it’s done?

is it drooping? can you raise both? is it slurred or jumbled? to call 9-1-1 right away.

TODAY, what’s the best message that parents can give their children about sports? I’d be particularly concerned if a child wanted to get involved in football or hockey. I’d try to convince him or her it’s safer to play baseball. Now, a report in Men’s Health Resources, reveals this is prudent advice. Marc Weisskopf is professor of environmental epidemiology and physiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. His 10-year study compares mortality rates and health of 10,500 major league baseball (MLB) players with those involved in other major league sports. First, Weisskopf has bad news for the rest of us mortals. His research reveals that MLB players tend to live 24% longer than the average American male. This figure should make us take a good look of what

What is more interesting are the report’s other medical discoveries. For example, how do you explain that, compared to U.S. males, MLB players show a 20% lower death rate from cancer, 19% from heart diseases and stroke, 33% from respiratory disease, a shocking 46% from diabetes and 59% from suicide? So what can the rest of us learn from this study? According to a report by Dr. David E. Conroy, published in Obesity Research and Clinical Medicine, the average weight of an MLB player has gradually increased over the last 145 years. This rise coincides with the use of steroids and increased muscle mass, which makes it easier to hit the ball farther. But their increase in weight has not been as great as that of the general population. This helps to explain why MLBP live 24% longer and have less chance of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Weisskopf adds that athletes live longer because becoming a professional MLB player demands good health from the start. And, unless they keep in top shape, they won’t remain long in the league. This means watching their weight, diet and exercising. Why they have a lower death rate from cancer is harder to explain. But an increase in exercise has been linked to a decrease in some malignancy. But why is the rate of suicide so low in MLB players? Maybe this answer is a no-brainer. MLB players are well paid, enjoy travelling together, and from my experience with them, they enjoy plenty of laughter, which is good medicine. Yogi Berra, the philosopher king of the New York Yankees, kept the team laughing with his bizarre remarks, such as “If you come

to a fork in the road, take it.” Or, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else.” I’d prefer my child laughing with a baseball team than playing contact sports. Laughing has never caused brain concussion. After The Wedding (PG) *** Mom’s Away!

Beware of the past. Dark clouds are on the horizon as a pair get ready to tie the knot in the appropriately titled After The Wedding. Eventful in the extreme by all means seek out this fascinating look at a family on edge from Sony Pictures Classics and Mongrel Media now creating quite a stir at the International Village Cinemas. Idealism is an unassailable trait that few can take issue with. Consider Isabel to be a woman with a heart of gold. Michelle Williams leaves all the glitter and good life behind to perform good deeds running a children’s charity in poverty stricken India. On the look out for funding Isabel lucks out when a wealthy American

backer seems interested in her cause. From different worlds is busy New York Executive Theresa. Julianne Moore (Boogie Nights) plays the part of this no nonsense business dynamo to perfection. With a large charitable donation on the line Isabel goes to New York in hopes of getting the cash from Theresa. Once in the Big Apple a

whole can of worms sees the light of day as some ancient secrets thought long put to rest rear their ugly heads. Emotional, eventful and engaging throughout is After The Wedding. Great support from Billy Crudup as a husband and Abby Quinn as a daughter flesh out this wonderful tale of lies, deception and a family tree like no other.

2019 Kia Niro SX Touring: New hybrid crossover ticks all the boxes! By Autoreviewman Falling between Kia’s 2019 CUV lineup under the full-size Sorento and midsize Sportage, the subcompact Niro EV has a conventional look in its exterior styling instead of an idiosyncratic bent like the Toyota Prius or Nissan Leaf. There is Kia’s signature “tiger-nose” grille with a nice, well-integrated look to the front fascia. The long wheelbase, and gently tapering cabin greenhouse has

a sleek profile. With an extensive use of aluminum, air curtains, a rear spoiler and active front grille shutters, the Niro has an impressive 0.29 drag co-efficient. The Niro EV is a fully electric car – that needs no gas and can deliver up to 385 kilometers of range, compared to its corporate sister - the Hyundai Kona EV that has more range at (415 km)., Under the hood, the Niro EV powertrain comprises the same 201-hp motor and 356-volt 64.0-

kWh battery pack used by the Hyundai Kona EV. With the 64-kW-hr lithium-ion battery placed under the passenger compartment, the rear seat floor is slightly raised, but overall interior space is similar to other Niro models, with plenty of head- and legroom even for tall passengers sitting in the back, and a flexible cargo area that handily accommodates bulky items. The Niro has an standard 100-kW DC fast-charging capability, while with a Level 2 (7.2 kW) charger, it takes 9 hours and 35 minutes to fully charge the Niro EV’s battery through the front charge port. A Level 3 fast charger can do 80 percent in an hour on a 100-kW unit, or an hour and 15 minutes on the 50-kW one. A word of caution, you must have a 240 volt outlet or it will take a huge amount of time to charge the Niro from 110v! The Niro EV is offered in two very well equipped versions: EX ($44,995) and SX Touring ($53,995) Standard content includes passive entry with push-button start, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, automatic climate control, and a host of driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering assist, and blindspot warning. Shift-By-Wire Transmission Control and rearview camera. The SX Touring trim adds LED head- and taillights, a sunroof, leather front seats that are heated and ventilated, an 8.0inch center touchscreen rather than a 7.0-inch unit, and Harman/Kardon stereo. Power sunroof, and Smart cruise control (ASCC) Lane Keeping Assist System, Kia’s Drive Wise suite of driver assistance tech is included on

Autonomous emergency braking, seven airbags, and Kia’s UVO3 interface - wonderful, intuitive and easy to use. Inside, as usual once cannot helped but be impressed with how well- appointed and wellfinished the cabin is. With good visibility and a roomy interior, there is a classy upscale look to the dash and front driver’s cockpit. It’s all black detailing set off with metal look trim and neat, tidy well finished controls and nice bright gauges display. Interior room is good with plenty of head and legroom. The rear seat flips to reveal a roomy cargo area. On the road, the Niro’s electric motor’s 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque gives you effortless power especially in Sport mode. However, in Eco, Eco+, and Normal modes, torque is held a tad to minimize torque steer and wheel spin. The 2019 Niro EV’s low center of gravity and independent suspension gives it a smooth ride and fairly neutral handling. When combined with its responsive steering and minimal body roll, the crossover feels stable on sharp bends. One pedal driving is easy with the four-level (0 to 3) regenerative braking. The 2019 Kia Niro EV is a great addition to the Kia Niro range and by the far the best if not the cheapest in the three model range. With good road manners, generous driving nogas range, and a practical roomy interior, the Niro EV is very tempting if you are in the market for as an electric only CUV.

all models, bundling together adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, driver attention alert, lane following and keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

2019 Jaguar F-Pace SVR Review: 550 Horsepower “Magnificent beast,”

By Autoreviewman The mid-sized Jaguar F- Pace SUV with its thrusting, honed good looks, low- stance, and large wheels looks suitably expensive and exotic. Comprised largely of aluminum, helping to keep it lighter and more performance responsive, the F-Pace is already a sports car –derived SUV. And now Jaguar have made it even better with a 2019 SVR model, a high performance version of the F-Pace with Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations massaging a big 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 with a stonking 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. Jaguar refers to the F-Pace SVR as the “magnificent beast,” and it’s easy to see why. With its excellent blend of muscle, agility and style, not to mention its useful utility, the F-Pace SVR is mean, aggressive looking, and an incredible performance all-rounder. Jaguar says the SVR will do the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds with a top speed of 176 mph (283 km/h). All-wheel drive is standard, and The ZFsourced, eight-speed automatic transmission has revised shift mapping, and routes power to all four wheels. The SVR F- Pace is distinguished by, massive air intakes, and vents in the hood and front fenders. The rear fascia has a new bumper with big quad exhaust pipes, and a unique rear spoiler. In addition to its larger 21 inch wheels, the F-Pace SVR gets special front fenders, rocker panels and a new rear spoiler. The spoiler out back isn’t only for show, either, and helps reduce aerodynamic lift.

Inside, the cabin is gorgeous with beautiful soft leathers draping the dash, center console and door panels, and nicely bolstered front sport seats that feature very attractive lozenge quilted inserts and embossed SVR logos in the headrests. The rear seats are also new for the SVR, with seatbacks that continue the styling from those in front. A meaty SVR steering wheel with aluminum paddle shifters feels fantastic and there is a new SportShift gear selector that replaces the rotary dial of other F-Pace models. The smart metal and aluminum dotted dash and console looks great. Jaguars’ InControl Touch Pro system with a 10-inch touchscreen takes care of infotainment duties and the audiophile quality 17-speaker Meridian surround-sound setup, sounds wonderful. A 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices and Bluetooth connectivity. Of course there is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Self-parking capability, heated front and rear seats, a huge panoramic glass roof and adjustable ambient lighting are just a few of the optional extras in the F-Pace that make it a luxury premium ride. It also possesses a roomy cabin front and rear, with decent enough room for all passengers. With the rear seats up, there’s 33.5 cubic feet. With the 40/20/40-split seats folded flat. The impressively large 650-litre trunk space offers more storage than similar SUV’s. Our gorgeous Fuji white tester came with a slew of options such as the Driver Assist Pack ($3,600) with features such as: Adaptive Cruise Control + Steering, Surround Camera System, Blind Spot Assist, Rear Traffic Monitor, Park Assist, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Meridian Surround Sound System, Head-Up Display, J Luxury Interior Package and much more. The options fitted to our tester came in at $13,100 alone. On the road, the extra horsepower, and muscled up tweaks make the F-Pace into a screamer of a high performance SUV. Variable, rearbiased all-wheel drive and rear axle torque vectoring send power to the wheels that have the most grip, so making cornering precise and quicker. New Bilstein adaptive dampers, stiffer springs and a thicker rear antiroll bar also help in handling, maintaining a flat even keel in

speed corners. The steering is quick and offers very tactile, satisfying feedback. The Dynamic mode setting is very entertaining with a more buttoned up feel as everything, handling, steering, engine and transmission performance is tightened up. All-wheel drive in the F-Pace is on-demand. The system sends 90 per cent of torque to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions, but changes torque to a balanced 50:50 front and rear on surface such as grass and mud. The tight sports-car-like handling helps the Jaguar feel firm and planted, even

on tight twisty curves. Unlike some other larger SUV’s there is very little body roll on the F-pace SVR and handling is exceptional for an SUV, almost sports-car like. Sporty, refined, fast and with an unmatched pedigree, this is one Jaguar everyone should aspire to. 2019 Jaguar SVR F-Pace Suggested Retail Price $89,900. Options as supplied $13,150.Destination $1,700. Total Price $104,750.00 Website: www.jaguar.ca
