• No party has been elected with over 50 per cent vote share since 1952 • BJP won 38 per cent of the total votes in 2019 New Delhi (IANS): Former President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday cautioned against a “majoritarian government” against the backdrop of panIndia protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Mukherjee also praised former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for “seeking to taking along everyone” at a time when the present government is being accused of dividing the country. A numerical majority in the elections only gives a political party the right to form a “stable” government and not a “majoritarian” one, he stressed. “A numerical majority in elections gives you the right to make a stable government. The lack of popular majority forbids you from (becoming) a majoritarian government. That is the message and essence of our parliamentary democracy,” Mukherjee said while delivering the second Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Lecture at the India Foundation here. The former President also pointed out that while people have given “strong majorities” to various parties since 1952, not a single one has been elected with over 50 per cent vote share.

Violence in Howrah, West Bengal, on December 14 as protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act got out of control all across India.

UN Chief concerned about violence, police action during anti-CAA protests in India The BJP won 38 per cent of the total votes in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. Mukherjee called Vajpayee as a “visionary” with a good understanding of the country and its people. “India and Indians intrinsically cannot digest bigotry and division over a sustained period. We are a nation of 12,69,219 square miles, practising seven major religions, speaking 122 languages and 1,600 dialects in their everyday lives… represented by the Constitution of India. Atalji accepted this reality. He shaped his vision for everyone, seeking to take everyone along even though many may not have agreed with his ideological inclinations,” he said.

United Nations (IANS): United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned about the violence and the “alleged use of excessive force” in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in India, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday. “We very much call for restraint and urge full respect for the rights of freedom of opinion and expression and peaceful assembly,” he said while answering a question about the protests at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. On the CAA, he said that he would refer to the “very strong words” from Human Rights High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet. Bachelet’s spokesperson Jeremy Laurence said last week in Geneva that the law “would appear to undermine the commitment to equality before the law enshrined in India’s Constitution” and the country’s international commitments. He added, “While the goal of

protecting persecuted groups is welcome, this should be done through a robust national asylum system that is premised on the principle of equality and non-discrimination, and which applies to all people in need of protection from persecution and other human rights violations, with no distinction as to race, religion, national origin or other prohibited grounds.” Several students were injured in police action during a protest last week by students of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. Protests have since spread mainly to campuses across India.

JNU students hold protests over police action in Jamia, AMU

New Delhi (IANS): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Wednesday witnessed protests over the alleged police brutality against students of the Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The students took out a ‘Masaal Juloos’ on the varsity campus and raised slogans against the Narendra Modi-led Central government over the CAA and the NRC. The protest march was also attended by former JNUSU President and CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar. Students holding torches raised slogans like “Hai Jaan Se Pyaara Hindustan, Pyaara Pyaara Hindustan, Zindadil hai Hindustan, Protest Karega Hindustan, Nahi Jhukega Hindustan, Arey Gandhi Waala Hindustan... (India will not cow down, India will protest, India of Mahatma Gandhi will protest...)” The protest was also attended by student leaders like Umar Khalid of United Against Hate (UAH), and Maksoor Usmani and Ahmad Mujtaba from the AMU. Addressing the crowd, Usmani said: “It is the large crowd that I expected. I want to tell you that I am an Indian Muslim and I speak this with pride.” Referring to the police actions on the students at the Jamia and AMU, Usmani said: “The way in which students were lathi charged by the police, I who was a doctor has started studying law.” Usmani also told the crowd about Article 10, 14,15,21 and NRC and CAA. “This fight is to save the Constitution,” Usmani added.

Following the violence, Delhi Police resorted to lathi charge and also fired tear gas shells inside the Jamia library in which several students were injured. The students are demanding the roll back of the CAA and the NRC.

Kolkata (IANS): Assailing Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his comment that Aadhaar was not a proof of citizenship, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asked him why was it then linked to bank accounts, voter IDs and mobile phones and said it was his duty to “douse flames” rather than “set the

6,000 crore on it? Is the cat out of the bag now? I want clarification from you. As a citizen of the country it is my prerogative, right to ask you,” she said at Dorina crossing in central Kolkata. Banerjee also asked Shah why Aadhaar was linked to mobiles, bank accounts and passports. Referring to Shah’s comment to a television channel that even PAN cards and voter IDs were not proof of citizenship, she said “Then how did you become home minister? Your government, my government are all there because the voters gave us the mandate. “Will only badges given by the BJP have to be taken as proper (citizenship) documents?” she asked after leading a huge march from Howrah Maidan. She urged Shah - also the BJP president - to control his party and contain the violence in the country. “I will appeal to my home minister of the country, please control your party and control the county. You are not only a BJP leader, you are the country’s home minister. See that peace is maintained,” she said. Banerjee also slammed minister of state for railways Suresh C. Angadi for saying has ordered the district administration to ‘shoot at sight’ if anyone tried to destroy public property. “You are saying all should be shot dead? Is this how democracy operates?” she asked. Ridiculing BJP’s slogan Sab ka sath, sab ka vikas (with all, development for all),

One of the protests in Assam. she said “then why are you leaving the people’s hand? You have only done sab ka sarvanash, satyanash (doom for all)”. Banerjee said her government was maintaining peace, but the centre has to withdraw CAA and refrain from undertaking any NRC exercise. “If you don’t withdraw CAA, we will also see how you rule. If need be, i will tell everybody to come out on the streets with me. But in a democracy one has to be tolerant. Our job s to do things in peace,” she said. Virtually throwing a challenge to the BJP led NDA government, she said how many people would they imprison. “How many jails will you set up? How many detention camps will you build?” Continuing with her belligerent tone against the BJP, she asked it not to challenge her. “What will you do? Put us in jail? Dismiss our government? It is not that easy”. With the state governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, a section of constitutional experts and her opponents saying the

state government was doing an unconstitutional act by publicly saying it would not implement CAA - a law of the land a” Banerjee said the BJP government could pass the Act only because it has the majority in parliament. “The BJP leaders want us to abide by all their diktats even if they are playing with fire. Governments will come and governments will go. But how much popular support did they get in the last Lok Sabha polls? Only 38 per cent. That means 62 per cent people were against you. “You could pass this Act because you have majority. But remember, this is unconstitutional and undemocratic, unethical and illegal,” she said. Banerjee also dismissed prime minister Narendra Modi and Shah’s claim that the CAA has nothing to do with Indian citizens. “This is nonsense. This is a lollipop. CAB (as Banerjee still calls the CAA) and NRC are two sides of the same coin,” she added.

CAA: Violent incidents may polarize votes in Assembly polls New Delhi (IANS): Political pundits believe that violent incidents over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) may hamper the upcoming Assembly elections in the country. Experts believe that the Act has bifurcated maximum population in the country. One fraction is vociferously supporting this Act while other is fiercely opposing it. The CAA is a face-off between the people. This situation may cause the polarisation of votes in the ongoing Jharkhand Assembly polls as well as in upcoming Delhi and West Bengal polls. Moreover, the political parties are very well aware of it, hence, they are blaming each other for the situation.

Former Congress chief Rahul in a press conferences blamGandhi on Monday said in a ing the appeasement of votes tweet that the CAB (Citizen- behind the violence. ship (Amendment) Bill) and Patra said: “At one hand, there NRC (National Register of Citi- are people like (Asaduddin) zens) are weapons of mass Owaisi and (AAP leader) polarisation while BJP’s na- Amanatullah Khan who are tional spokesperson Sambit conspiring to divide the counPatra attacked the opposition try like (Muhammad Ali) Jin-

Political expert Ratanmani Lal told IANS: “If violent incidents take place in any state just before the elections then it surely affects the polls”. He said: “Religious and senti-

mental disputes cause polarisation of people. The public opinion divides either in support or opposition on a single issue leaving others aside. This is obvious that the fraction supporting the CAA will go with the BJP and the other one may go with the opposition. This kind of situation is always in favour of political parties”. “Minorities’ votes are vital in

the West Bengal Assembly elections, the polarisation may be in favour of the BJP there. But, the violent incident in Delhi may work adversely for the BJP because the Delhi Police comes under the Central government. Hence, the Centre is accountable for the violence, means it won’t be able to attack the state government the way it can do in West Bengal”.

Congress punches holes in CAA, Supreme Court sets January 22 for hearing plea New Delhi (IANS): The government has violated several laws with the new Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the new law lacks the method to verify whether refugees are persecuted or not, according to the Congress here on Wednesday. Addressing the media at the party headquarters, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the Act violated the right to equality provided in the Constitution. Jairam Ramesh had filed a petition before the Supreme Court over the CAA, he said and added, “It lacks a method or a framework on how the government is planning to verify whether refugees are persecuted or not. Also, the Home Minister keeps referring to persecuted minorities, but the Act doesn’t mention the term in the same context.” Singhvi said the Act needed some rules and regulations for implementation. “In this Act there is nothing like this. We have informed the court about it,” he said. Clarifying that none of the petitioners has asked for an internal stay, Singhvi said the Congress had only asked for issuance of a show-cause notice and the Chief Justice said he was issuing

Abhishek Manu Singhvi notice to the Centre and nearly 60 petitions had been filed challenging the Act. The court had set January 22 as the next date of hearing, he said. Earlier, the Supreme Court said there would be no stay on the CAA. The Centre will file affidavits on the validity of the law and will also file a reply on the petitioners’ prayer seeking stay on the Act. In its petition, the Congress has raised three issues that the is unconstitutional, is against our international duties, and also against agreements signed with states by earlier governments, which also includes Assam Accord and All Tripura Tribal Force.

Musharraf death sentence: Khosa’s legacy, old rivalry between judiciary and Army Islamabad / New Delhi (IANS): Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa’s own professional legacy and the old rivalry between judiciary and army in Pakistan may have been the reasons for the unexpected death sentence awarded to the military dictator Pervez Musharraf. Sources in Pakistan told IANS that Chief Justice Khosa ensured that the trial in the high treason case against former President and army chief of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf was completed before he retired. Khosa, who has served as the Chief Justice of Pakistan for over 11 months, retires on December 20. The special court verdict which came three days before his retirement has drawn flak from both the Pakistan Army and the civilian government headed by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The Khan government has decided to defend Musharraf in an appeal against the court verdict. “Justice Khosa is a tough Baloch who has always been upright. He believes that as a Baloch warrior, he needs to do the right

thing,” one of his friends, who did not wish to be named, told IANS over phone from Islamabad. “Of course, it is also about his own legacy as a justice,” he added. Justice Khosa has a record of delivering verdicts in over 55,000 cases in a career spanning around two decades. Of the many landmark judgements he passed, he earned fame for disqualifying two sitting Prime Ministers, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and Mian Nawaz Sharif, and restricting the extension period of the current army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa from three years to just six months. He also upheld the death sentence to Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of then Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, and acquitted Christian woman Aasia Bibi in an alleged blasphemy case. Sources in Rawalpindi told IANS that the judiciary may have also found an opportunity to settle its old scores with the army. In 2007, Musharraf, who was President at the time, suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Mu-

hammad Chaudhry after pressing charges of corruption against him. The episode led to lawyers’ agitation, which eventually became the cause of Musharraf ’s downfall. Interestingly, the judiciary in a “confluence of interests” with the army ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was perceived to be a friend of India, another source in Pakistan said. “The army turned against Nawaz Sharif when he tried to put his foot down after Pakistan sponsored terror attacks in Pathankot. Eventually, they chose Imran Khan as their candidate,” a Karachi-based source said. Prime Minister Imran Khan, sources in Islamabad said, will do anything to appease the military. “The army is right now furious over the verdict. They don’t want to set a precedent where any institution becomes more powerful than them. Since Imran Khan runs a puppet government, it is natural for him to support and defend Musharraf,” a source said. Most political parties, including Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which has accused

Nirbhaya case: Supreme Court rejects Akshay’s death penalty review

New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder convict Akshay Kumar Singh’s age, socio-economic background, unblemished antecedents and chances to reform fade into insignificance as the offence committed by him falls under “rarest of rare” cases, and therefore the death penalty is confirmed. Singh had moved the apex court seeking a review on the capital punishment handed down to him and other three accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. The top court upheld the death penalty in 2017 and dismissed the review by other accused in 2018. A bench, headed by Justice R. Banumathi and comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and A.S. Bopanna, said: “In light of the aggravating circumstances and considering that the case falls within the category of ‘rarest of rare cases’, the death penalty is confirmed.” The top court noted Singh’s review petition was a mirror image of petitions of the other convicts. “The grounds raised in the present review petition are almost a repetition of the arguments raised in the earlier review petitions which were rejected and, in our view, cannot be raised repeatedly,” it said. The court told Singh’s lawyer that review petition is not for re-hearing of the appeal on re-appreciation of the evidence over and over again, and a party is not entitled to seek review of the judgment merely for the purpose of rehearing of the appeal and a fresh decision. It observed that it did not find any error apparent on the face of the record in the appreciation of evidence or the findings of the judgment of May 5, 2017. Therefore, none of the grounds raised in the review petition call for review of this judgment and thus, the review petition is dismissed, it said. As Singh’s lawyer A.P. Singh argued that the death penalty has been abolished in many countries, the court observed that “... the same contentions were raised by A.P. Singh in the earlier review petitions and the same were dismissed”. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, submitted that the evidence adduced by the prosecution and the defence plea has been considered threadbare both by the trial court, the Delhi High Court and also by the Supreme Court. “And, the High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the findings as to the guilt of the accused and also the sentence.” Singh’s lawyer contended before the court that his client wants to file a mercy petition before the President, and sought three weeks time. Mehta contested this, stating the prescribed time limit is only one week. However, the top court refused to pass an order on the time limit to file mercy petition before the President. “We are not expressing view in this regards, and the accused can avail the relief for mercy petition as per the stipulated time limit available in law,” it said.

Convent School, affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Educations, is located in Beas, some 40 km from Amritsar. “The school authorities forced the victim’s parents not to lodge the police complaint. The victim’s family,

which is poor, also left the place to an undisclosed location,” a woman protester, whose child is studying the school, said. Expressing concern about the safety of the school children, another protester demanded the arrest of the school prin-

cipal for negligence. “A girl student committed suicide in the school five years back. She was also the victim of rape. The matter was not reported to the police owing to the influence of the school,” she alleged. Several social organizations

Pre-Budget meet: Punjab urges Centre to continue with MSP New Delhi (IANS): To safeguard the interests of the farmers, Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal on Wednesday urged the Centre to continue the procurement of wheat and paddy at minimum support price (MSP). He also asked to ensure the procurement of maize and alternate crops to promote crop diversification. During the pre-budget meeting of Finance Ministers with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman here, Badal raised the issue of crop residue management, suggesting that the government should make provisions for crop residue management at Rs 100 per quintal over and above the MSP.

“The state has not only been losing to non-receipt of grants for creation of infrastructure from the Centre since infrastructure already exists but is incurring debt repayments for creating the infrastructure from its own resources,” said the minister, adding that to incentivize states like Punjab through special assistance for rejuvenating the existing infrastructure. The Union Finance Minister was requested to formulate a special scheme for the establishment of water treatment plants and rejuvenation of the villages’ ponds in the forthcoming General Budget. Badal said Punjab is a major foodgrains contributor to the national pool.

It contributes approximately 120-125 lakh metric tonne of wheat and 105-110 lakh metric tonne of rice every year. However, the slow pace of liquidation of foodgrains from the state during last two-three years has resulted in shortage of storage space for new arrivals of crops. Badal stated that in the first two years of implementation, bimonthly release of Good and Service Tax (GST) compensation by the Centre to the states had been adversely affecting their ability to meet their committed and regular outflows. He requested for monthly release of such compensation to enable the state to timely and efficiently plan their expenditures.

Chandigarh, Amritsar colder than Shimla Chandigarh (IANS): Chandigarh and Amritsar were colder in the day on Wednesday than Shimla. Likewise, many places in the plains of north India such as Ludhiana, Patiala and Ambala were colder than hilly tourist destinations of Shimla and Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, the Met

office here said. Chandigarh, located in the Shivalik foothills, recorded a maximum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees below the average, while Shimla, located at around 7,000 feet above sea level, saw a high of 14.9 degrees Celsius, a rise of 2.5 degrees

from Tuesday’s maximum temperature, while Palampur recorded a maximum of 14 degrees Celsius. Amritsar and Ludhiana in Punjab and Ambala in Haryana recorded maximum day temperatures of 11.5 degrees Celsius, 14.2 degrees Celsius and 13.8 degrees Celsius, re-

spectively. Hill stations across Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing long hours of sunny weather for the past three days and the maximum temperatures in most places have risen by three-four degrees above the season’s average. The minimum temperature

in Shimla was 4 degrees Celsius, while it was 8.3 degrees in Chandigarh, two degrees above average. Manmohan Singh, Director at the Met office in Shimla, told IANS that many towns in Himachal Pradesh like Shimla and Palampur saw high day temperature compared to the

plains due to the prevailing sunny weather. “This is a normal phenomenon and occurs mainly due to shallow fog in the plains,” he said. However, the picturesque tourist resort of Manali was in the grip of bone-chilling minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.

Hyderabad (IANS): The US hopes to win the deals for supplying fighter aircraft to the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy by selling its F21 and F/ A18 Super Hornets respectively, a top US official said here on Wednesday. Joel Starr, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of PoliticalMilitary Affairs in the US Department of State, said the IAF and Navy fighter competitions are once in a generation opportunity to more closely ally US and India. “We have the best product technologically advanced F21 for India Air Force and F/A 18 which I understand the Indian Navy is very much interested in. That competition will be concluding soon and I hope resolution will be satisfactory for both the parties,” he told reporters on the sidelines of US-India Defence Ties Conference here. He earlier told the Conference that choosing US fighter aircraft presents an opportunity to not only meet India’s military requirements but deepen their partnership. “For fighter competitions we offer some best technology widely deployed by our Navy and Air Force. F/A 18 Super Hornet and F21 Indian both will bolster India defence capabilities, widen its defence industrial base and

position it as a supplier in global defence eco-system shared by network of our allies and partners,” he said. In April, the IAF had issued Request for Information to acquire 114 jets at a cost of around $18 billion, billed as one of the world’s biggest military procurement in recent years. F/A 18 Super Hornet is in contention for an Indian Navy requirement of 57 new fighter jets. Starr believes the two deals could give huge boost to the bilateral defence trade between the US and India, which is currently estimated at $16 billion. He said as India restructure its forces, the US will continue to offer highest quality, most dependable and most technologically advanced products in the market to India. He claimed that US military sales will benefit both Indian national security and Indian and American workers. The US official said his country appreciate India’s effort to develop own manufacturing base, saying such a base was in their mutual best interest as it will not only increase their capabilities but contribute to the global supply chain. “The security relationship between India and the US continues to grow. From increasing

military cooperation, exercises to defence trade, the US will continue to work with India to ensure a free and safe IndoPacific region,” he added. He hoped that 2+2 dialogue will further strengthen the defence ties between the two countries. Joel Reifman, Consul General in Hyderabad, described Hyderabad as microcosm of developing industry relation and US cooperation. He noted that the marquee US names in Information Technology, pharma and defence have their presence in Hyderabad. Telangana’s Industries and IT Minister K. T. Rama Rao said Hyderabad offer the best eco-system for defence and aerospace sector and sought greater engagement of US companies with the state. The minister pointed out that leading US companies like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, GE and Pratt and Whitney have set up their operations in Hyderabad. The two-day conference, being hosted by the US Consulate General in partnership with the Business Council for International Understanding and the Confederation of Indian Industry, is being attended by government officials, corporate leaders, researchers and entrepreneurs.

THE DOCTOR GAME-W.GIFFORD - JONES M.D

The greatest gift to give at any time of the year would save a life. Years ago, I pleaded with religious leaders to preach a sermon supporting organ donation. I ask them again to remind their flocks of this humanitarian need. Hopefully they would relate this story of Kochouseph Chittilappilly who gave a great gift to a stranger. This is 45th year I have had the pleasure of wishing readers a happy, healthy and safe holiday season. You can find an archive of all my articles on my website at www. docgiff.com. Sign-up on the homepage to receive my weekly e-newsletter in your email inbox and follow me on Twitter and Facebook @giffordjonesmd. Online: docgiff.com Comments: info@docgiff.com THIS holiday season there will be joy, intimacy, and affection around many family dinner tables. But for some families it will be a difficult time with little laughter. They know that next year a family member may be missing. They are waiting for the donation of a kidney, heart or other vital organ to keep a loved one alive. But it may not arrive in time. So here’s a story of compassion from a man who gave the ultimate gift to a perfect stranger. I recently came across an article written by Naazneen Karmali, Asia Wealth Editor and India Editor for Forbes Asia. She relates the story of a wealthy Indian tycoon, Kochouseph Chittilappilly. He acknowledged that, as his 60th birthday approached, life had been very good to him. He felt compelled to give something back to society. He chose one of his kidneys. No doubt his family worried that he was risking his own life to save a trucker with whom he had no family ties. But following his 6oth birthday he underwent a four-hour operation to remove one of his kidneys. In North America several billionaires, such as Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, are giving away huge amounts of their fortunes to various charities. Chittilappilly is going one step further, giving away one-third of his fortune during his lifetime, and also one of his kidneys. His generosity has not gone unnoticed in India and elsewhere. According to Naazneen Karmali the donation of organs has become a compelling issue in India. But there are still major problems. For instance, 200,000 people seek transplants every year! But there are only 7,500 selfless donors. This has resulted in an illegal trade where poor families sell their organs to the wealthy. Since 1994 this has been forbidden, but is still happening, partly because of religious and cultural taboos that prevent organ donation after death. Karmali describes Chittilappilly as a “softspoken man”. On one of his office walls is a framed quote that reads, “I’m gonna make the rest of my life the best of my life”. And he admits that his philanthropy arrived late in life. He says his concern used to be “business, business, business”. But he also has a sense of humour. He laughs that one day a police officer visited his home to see if he was being paid for his kidney! In North America we often talk about brotherly love. But we have a tendency to ignore the many who are dying needlessly. In Canada alone, one person dies every 30 hours while waiting for an organ transplant. So how can we stop these deaths? It’s been many years since I have written about this problem. But I believe it is a shameful fact that some people have to shop for organs in other countries. And that every day of the year people with sound organs are being buried. These could be utilized by those in need to stay alive. I fully understand that there are some who, for religious or other reasons, do not want to donate an organ. But I believe the majority of North Americans are willing to depart this planet minus an organ if it

Often Sara manages to leave her fans impressed with the way she handles the attention. Be it selfie seekers at the airport or children shouting her name from a building next to her Pilates class, Sara’s sweet response to them has won her the title of Bollywood’s miss congeniality. Another thing people are loving about the Coolie No 1 star is her hilarious take on shayari. Often Sara’s instagram

posts have unique shayari’s written by her as captions. Recently, the Simmba star shared a photo of herself with a poem that has caught our attention. In the photo collage, we can see the gorgeous Sara decked up in a stunning lehenga. Along with it, she can be seen sporting heavy earrings and glam make up. With her hair perfectly styled, the Coolie No 1 star looked elegant and graceful in the photo. However, it was her caption that blew us away. Sara shared the photo and wrote a rhyming poem with the photo. Sara wrote, “A little sparkle, a lot of shine But wanna know what it takes to be mine? Don’t look for a sign, don’t join a line I don’t drink so it takes just

dine without wine Look at me so full of myself, thinking someone will pine Yes you’re right I did it all just to rhyme Okay! Fine! Fine! Fine!.” Well, looks like the Simmba star just shared what it takes to be hers. Meanwhile, on the work front, Sara is busy shooting for David Dhawan’s Coolie No 1 with Varun Dhawan. In the film, Sara will star opposite Varun and it is a remake of 1995 film that starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. It also stars Jaaved Jaaferi, Paresh Rawal, Shikha Talsania, Johnny Lever and Rajat Rawail. Coolie No 1 is slated to release on May 1, 2020. Apart from this, Sara will be seen Imtiaz Ali’s Aaj Kal with Kartik Aaryan.

Mukesh Ambani, SRK, Aamir among Variety’s 500 Most Important People

Los Angeles (IANS): Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan are among the 10 Indians who feature in Variety magazines list of 500 Most Important People in Global Media List. Bollywood producers Aditya Chopra, Ekta Kapoor, Ronnie Screwala, and Siddharth Roy Kapur have also made it to the list, as have Kishore Lulla, executive chairman of Eros International, and Uday Shankar, president of The Walt Disney Company, APAC.

The leading magazine described Shah Rukh as “one of Indian cinema’s great global romantic stars, winning most popular actor three times at the Central European Bollywood Awards”. Variety also explained how SRK’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment has carved a niche in the business showbiz. “A thriving actor-producer, he co-produced ‘Zero’, in 2018 through his VFX house Red Chillies Entertainment, but it underwhelmed. Undeterred, Red Chillies hit big with

thriller ‘Badla’ in 2019, and the company has its eight-episode political espionage series ‘Bard of Blood’ currently running on Netflix. Inducted into AMPAS in 2018, Khan has been making his mark for decades: His romance ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ has been playing nonstop for 24 years, and ‘Dil Se’ was the first Indian film to break into the U.K. top 10. He also co-owns cricket teams Kolkata Knight Riders and Trinbago Knight Riders,” the description added. On Aamir Khan, Variety

spoke about his hit films, calling him the “perfectionist”. “After decades as a hugely popular Bollywood actorproducer-director, the 2018 Khan starrer ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ was a disappointment - but only by his own exalted standards. Budgeted at $32 million, the film grossed $54 million, including $9 million in China. By contrast, his 2016 “Dangal” was India’s all-time highest grosser, earning $310 million, $190 million of it from China. Khan is currently remaking the iconic ‘Forrest Gump’

titled ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ for 2020. The admitted perfectionist burst out in 2001 when his ‘Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India’ was up for the foreign-language Oscar. Since then, his

name has been attached to some of India’s biggest hits, including ‘PK’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Dhoom 3’. He was inducted into the Academy in 2017,” read the write-up on Variety’s site.

‘Good Newwz’ trailer: Diljit-Kiara’s hilarious contract leaves Kareena Kapoor Khan in shock, Akshay Kumar in splits

The new trailer for Good Newwz is out. Featuring the lead actors Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani, the trailer is hilarious and will leave you in splits at several instances. Going by the first trailer, it’s known that Good Newwz is out about major goof-up taking place between Akshay-Kareena and Diljit-Kiara after sperms get exchanged during IVF treat-

ment. In this trailer, we see an extension of how this major goof-up has made their lives like never before. As Diljit’s kid is in Kareena’s womb, he keeps on visiting their house making Akshay and her life miserable. She then decides to bind a contract but that also goes in vain as Diljit rights in the contract that the kid will either be an athlete or a rapper as Kiara

and he is fans of Honey Singh and Milkha Singh respectively. The trailer also shows glimpses of the couples getting emotional as the situation has turned everything upside down. Talking about Good Newwz, the film is directed by debutant Raj Mehta and produced by Karan Johar under his home banner Dharma Productions.

The dramedy marks the reunion of Akshay and Kareena as the leading couple after almost a decade. While Kareena has worked with Diljit before in Udta Punjab. The film also marks Kiara’s first outing with Akshay, Kareena and Diljit on the big screens. Good Newwz songs have become chartbusters and the film is hitting the screens on December 27, 2019.

Jojo Rabbit (PG) ***** Heil Fun!

War is hell. See the ultimate symbol of hate get his just dessert in Jojo Rabbit. Wildly flambouyant this gut wrenching not so subtle dark comedy from Fox Searchlight Pictures pushes all the right buttons. Hot off it’s triumphant run at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival this must see movie is now spellbinding audiences still at select Cineplex Cinemas. Who would have thought a director from the world of Marvel superhero movies could pull off a complete change of course. Star-making Director Taiko Waititi leaves Thor’s hammer behind to wrestle with none other than certified real life madman Adolph Hitler. Set in world war 2 Jo Jo Rabbit follows the plight of Aryan star in the making Jo Jo Betzler. In a star-making break-out performance Roman Griffin Davis turns up the heat as

a shy raw recruit hoping to be a star convert to the Nazi cause. Where Jojo really picks up speed is the interaction the lad has with the actual leader of German, Herr Hitler himself. Smooth as silk and over the top is director Waikiki whose delivery as Adolph is hilarious. Great writing that focuses on the horrors engulfing Germany and its Jewish citizens is seeking. With great performances from Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson further solidify this smart black comedy. Red of a secret resident

Even a degree of humanity shines through in this monstrous society giving hope and possibly a touch of tolerance and redemption in an otherwise bleak existence. FCA Canada: Winter Warrior - New 2020 Dodge Charger GT All-wheel-drive Windsor, Ontario: winter driving has never looked this good. The snow, rain and slush are just around the corner, and Dodge continues to charge ahead of its competition with the new 2020 Dodge Charger GT all-wheel-drive (AWD), delivering all-weather driving confidence wrapped in muscle car attitude – a powerful combination that just can’t be found outside the Dodge lineup. The top three purchase reasons for the Charger are exterior styling, fun-to-drive, and power and acceleration. The Charger GT AWD delivers on all fronts and adds all-weather

capability at a starting Canadian Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $43,895 (excluding $1,895 destination charge). Charger GT AWD joins Char-

ger SXT AWD in dealer showrooms, giving more AWD options and a broader range of price points; Challenger SXT and GT AWD are also available for 2020 model year.

The new 2020 Dodge Charger GT AWD joins the new Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody and Charger Scat Pack 392 Widebody, as well as the Scat Pack 392, R/T, GT, SXT and SXT AWD as Dodge continues to buck the trend in a shrinking sedan segment. The Charger GT AWD features Dodge’s award-winning 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 engine, which delivers 300 horsepower at 6,350 rpm and a responsive 264 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm and is paired with the standard TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. A tuned induction system and dual ex-

haust from the manifolds back to the tips help deliver more than 90 percent of the engine’s peak torque from 1,800 to 6,400 rpm – all for outstanding drivability and responsiveness. For all-weather traction all year long, the Charger GT AWD features P235/55R19 BSW allseason performance tires mounted on 19-inch aluminum wheels in a Satin Carbon finish, optional in Black Noise. Projector LED fog lamps, a performance rear spoiler, Park-Sense Rear Park Assist and ParkView Rear Back-up Camera are also standard equipment on the Charger GT AWD.

. VDC provides excellent traction on slippery surfaces and also helps the driver maintain the desired vehicle path. Enhancing the on-road dynamic performance using precise front-to-rear torque control integrated with the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, VDC maintains fun-to-drive character of the Charger, regardless of road conditions. All-wheel drive shouldn’t mean compromise for muscle car enthusiasts, and with a variety of standard convenient features and performance parts, the Charger GT AWD has tons to offer, all year long.

Focus on the Acura Type S Performance Variants In summer 2019 Acura returned to Monterey Car Week, one of the world’s top gatherings of automotive and motorsports enthusiasts, to debut the Type S Concept. Representing a fundamental step toward fulfilling Acura’s return to Precision Crafted Performance, which started with the debut of the second-generation NSX, the Type S Concept sets the stage for re-introducing Type S performance variants to the Acura line-up after a decade hiatus, and will heavily influence the character of the upcoming, second-generation TLX Type S. The Type S Concept showcases new elements of Acura design including next-generation, four-lamp Jewel Eye® LED headlights, an open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille, and “Chicane” daytime running lights and taillights, both drawing inspiration from the Acura ARX-05 Daytona Proto-

models, attracting younger, more enthusiast-oriented customers in the process. In early 2018, the brand announced its intention to re-establish Type S performance variants in its line-up, and the development of a new, Acura-exclusive, turbocharged V6 engine. In June of last year, Acura launched the 2019 RDX as the first in a type race car. In addition to the rear decklid spoiler, forged carbon – created by bonding layers of carbon on top of one another to exceed the strength of traditional interwoven carbon – is applied to the front and rear splitters, side sills, rear decklid spoiler and multispoke 21-inch wheels. The Concept’s bespoke “Double Apex Blue Pearl” paint reflects a liquid and electric hue that pays homage to blue Type S heritage models, A fundamental step in fulfilling the promise of Precision Crafted

new generation of Acura models designed from the ground up around Precision Crafted Performance. In its first year, the third-generation RDX has become the retail best-selling model in luxury’s largest segment, setting multiple consecutive all-time monthly sales records.

The brand has also seen a highly successful return to sports car racing in North America. Acura teams and drivers fielding the NSX GT3 Evo and ARX05 Daytona Prototype currently lead both Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championships in the GTD and DPi classes of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Performance, Acura will debut two Type S performance variants in the next two years, starting with the second-generation TLX Type S. Type S models will deliver a high performance driving experience with quicker acceleration, nimbler handling and stronger braking performance than conventional Acura models. From 2001 through 2008, four Type S models set the standard for Acura performance in North America: Acura also expanded its sporty A-Spec package to all core
