Hemant Soren will be Jharkhand Chief Minister as JMM-Congress-RJD alliance defeats BJP BJP has lost five states - Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan - in a year Ranchi (IANS): Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-CongressRashtriya Janta Dal alliance’s Chief Minister candidate Hemant Soren was on Tuesday invited to form the government in Jharkhand and will take oath on December 29. Accompanied by leaders of alliance partners, the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Soren met Governor Draupadi Murmu at Raj Bhawan at 8.45 p.m. and staked his claim to form the government. The swearing-in will take here on 1 p.m. on Sunday. The alliance, which won 47 seats in the 81-member house in the November-December Assembly election, has also secured support of former ally, the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik. Soren was elected leader of the alliance at a meeting of alliance MLAs at the residence of his father and JMM President Shibu Soren on Tuesday night. Earlier in the day, newly-elected JMM legislators elected him as the leader of the legislature party. Talking to the media after it became clear that the BJP has lost the elections on Monday, Soren dedicated his victory to the people of the state and also thanked alliance partners for reposing faith in him “I thank Guruji (father Shibu Soren), Laluji and Soniaji, Rahulji, Priyankaji and all those leaders who reposed their faith and trust in me,” Soren said. Stating that a new chapter has been opened, he said it would be a milestone for the state. All the

Hemant Soren with Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi

promises made to the people would be fulfilled, he added. “We will sit with the alliance partners and decide the next course of action,” Soren said. According to the Election Commission data, the BJP secured 33.53 per cent vote, the JMMCongress-RJD alliance 36 per cent. Of this, the JMM, the Congress and the RJD have received 19.29 per cent, 13.78 per cent and 2.82 per

cent votes, respectively. The AJSU has garnered 8.15 per cent and the AIMIM led by Assudin Owaisi 1.08 per cent votes. The elections took place in five phases between November 30 and December 20. The Congress termed the results a rejection of BJP’s “anti-people” and “anti-constitutional” policies. Congress General Secretary,

Organisation, K.C. Venugopal said the results of the Jharkhand Assembly election are “a substantive and clear mandate against the divisive and disruptive political actions of (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and the BJP”. “The people of Jharkhand have rejected the anti-people and anticonstitutional policies of the BJP. Instead of talking about the development in respective states or issues of common people, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to fool the people by their narrow minded divisive political actions and sectarian agenda,” he said, in a release. Venugopal insisted that the people of Jharkhand have given a befitting reply to the BJP. “The victory in Jharkhand will give more power to the Congress party to fight against the anti-constitutional and anti-people policies of the BJP,” he added. Taking a dig at the BJP, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday said the people of Jharkhand have given the mandate and the President should not be disturbed at 5 a.m. to form the government and the Governor should not even bother to swear the oath to the government secretly. His remarks were a reference to the government formation by BJP in Maharashtra when in a sudden development, Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the Maharashtra Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar as his deputy by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in an early morning closed-door event.

CAA a legacy issue, we’ll challenge the challengers: Modi Lucknow (IANS): Condemning violence over the new citizenship law, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the problem over the Citizenship Amendment Act was one of “legacy issues”, asserting that “we will challenge the challengers”. More than a dozen people have died across Uttar Pradesh in protests against the law. The damage to public property is estimated around Rs 100 crore [Rs 1,000 million] in seven districts of the state. Addressing a gathering in the state capital after inaugurating

Narendra Modi the 25-ft tall bronze statue of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Lok Bhawan, the state secretariat, Modi said the legacy problems included Article 370, Ram temple issue and Citizenship Amendment Act. “We have solved some of

the problems that we got as legacy...We will challenge the challengers,” he said, adding the way to give citizenship to refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan has been cleared. The nation celebrated the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday. On the occasion, the Prime Minister also said that a government should work for future generations. “So far, we have focused on our rights. But now, we should focus on our duties. A govern-

Mamata warns BJP, extends support to protestors Kolkata (IANS): Warning the Bharatiya Janata Party against using force in the BJP-ruled states to suppress protests against the new citizenship law (CAA), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee here on Thursday said the BJP would face problems if non-BJP-ruled states decided to do the same against its leaders and workers. She also urged students to continue the movement against the CAA and the proposed National Register for Citizens (NRC) without bowing down to threats and repression. “In the BJP-ruled states, particularly UP, brute force is being used to curb the movement. I would like to tell the BJP, don’t try to suppress the movement through use of force. If anybody tries to terrorise people, use brute force, then the people of India, of Bengal, will not support that,” Banerjee said. “They say they will take action against protestors. We also have laws. We are warning them. In many states other parties are in power. If they start doing the same against the BJP, they will be in problem,” the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo said.

The peaceful protests would continue till the CAA was repealed, she iterated. “The agitation for protecting one’s rights will continue, even if one has to give his life for that. The movement will continue till the law is scrapped,” Banerjee said at Rajabazar in north Kolkata before leading yet another march, fifth, against the Act. Criticising the BJP as one of its leaders called the protestors “goondas”, Banerjee said, “Is it democracy? This is peoples’ movement for democracy. This is not a movement of adangabaaz (rioters)”. If the people lost the faith in a government, it could not remain in power, she added. Addressing a large gathering in the Muslim-dominated area, Banerjee extended full support to students fighting the CAA and the NRC. “The students are being threatened that their careers would be finished. They have even shut students’ hostels in Delhi. They are afraid of this movement. “They (students) should not bow down to these threats and continue their protests,” she said amid blowing of conch

shells and beating of kasor (a metal plate that is struck with a stick to make a musical noise), and incessant slogans of “No CAB, No NRC”. Despite the Citizenship Amendment Bill becoming an Act, the TMC is still using ‘CAB’ in most of its posters and slogans. The march went past Narkeldanga, Sealdah station, Acharajya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road, Nonapukur before culminating at Mullickbazar. People lined the streets to welcome Banerjee. The CAA seeks to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, before December 31, 2014. As per the Act, they will not be treated as illegal immigrants and will be granted Indian citizenship. The law has caused protests across the country, claiming over 20 lives. In Bengal, trains, buses and railways stations have been torched and damaged, and roads and train traffic blockaded by protestors.

ment should not work only for five years but also for five generations,” he said, adding those who damage public properties should question themselves. People should not believe in rumours and misinformation,” said the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister also praised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for development works he has undertaken in the state.

NEW

“Good governance is possible only when one takes an inclusive view. And, I am glad that Yodi Adityanath is following this,” he said. Modi also laid the foundation of Atal Medical University in Lucknow and underlined the importance of preventive healthcare. He said programmes such as Swachch Bharat, Yoga and Fit India are a part of this. “Preventive healthcare for ani-

mals is good for human health too,” Modi said. The Prime Minister said the priority of his government is “affordability of healthcare” and Ayushman Bharat is the biggest such scheme in the world. He also said as an MP, Vajpayee had given a new identity to Lucknow and now (Union Defence Minister) Rajnath Singh is carrying forward the good work.

of rights as enshrined in the Constitution. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who held the fort for the party over the last week at India Gate and met victims’ relatives in Uttar Pradesh, was also present among senior party leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge, Anand Sharma and A.K. Antony. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minis-

ter Kamal Nath, his Rajasthan counterpart Ashok Gehlot, besides general secretaries Mukul Wasnik and K.C. Venugopal also arrived at the historic site for the protest. have been protesting the new legislation across the country since it was passed on December 13. The party members also observed one-minute silence in support of their cause and against the BJP-led government’s policies. Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, however, left after about an hour. Priyanka Gandhi, before reading out the Preamble in Hindi, said in the names of all those “martyred during the anti-CAA

protests, her party resolved to protect the Constitution. “In the name of Bijnor’s 22-yearold Anas, who used to earn money for his family through a coffee-vending machine and had recently got married... In the name of 21-year-old Suleiman, who was studying for the UPSC exam and used to take tuition..., she said. On Sunday, Suleiman’s mother told her with tears in her eyes that her son was “martyred for his country, Priyanka added. “In the names of all the chil-

dren who have been martyred in this movement... In the name of Bijnor’s Omraj Saini, whose five children are waiting for him and he is in the hospital, injured... In their names, we resolve today that we will protect the Constitution and will not allow it to be destroyed, said Priyanka Gandhi, who is also party in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh. Venugopal said the protest meant to oppose the “authoritarian government and stand in support of the agitating students and civil society groups. The protest also sought to remind the government about the strength of India’s Constitution. The party has also asked its state units to organise peace marches across the states. Mahatma Gandhi, too, had launched a similar opposition to fight against the dictatorial policies of the British rulers, the speakers said, adding the Congress has now pitched in to save Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar’s Constitution.

Shringla to be India’s new Foreign Secretary New Delhi (IANS): Indian ambassador to the US and one of the senior-most diplomats Harsh Vardhan Shringla has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary replacing Vijay Keshav Gokhale. A 1984 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and a fluent French speaker, Shingla served as an ambassador to Bangkok from 2014

to 2016 and later High Commissioner to Dhaka for two years. In his current posting, Shingla came into prominence when he rebutted Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s opinion piece in The New York Times, quite eloquently. In a diplomatic career spanning 35 years, Ambassador Shringla also served at UNESCO in France, UN in New York besides Vietnam, Israel and South Africa. Ambassador Shringla has served in the Ministry of External Affairs as Joint Secre-

tary for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives. He also headed the UN political and SAARC divisions in the ministry. Government says unification of Indian Railway services to end project delays; former board chairman disagrees New Delhi (IANS): A day after the Union Cabinet approved the organisational restructuring of the railways through unification of the existing eight Group A services into one central service -- the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) -ministry officials said the move was required as there was huge “departmentalism” that delayed many projects. “There were long delays which led to cost overruns, thus digging more into the pockets of the national transporter,” said a senior Railway Ministry official. “The restructuring was required as the national transporter was using 150-year-old legacy of departmentalism which was marked by inefficiency, infighting over control of assets and resources and delay in decision making,” said

the official. The railways has various departments such as traffic, mechanical, electrical, signal and telecom, personnel, accounts and others, the official said, adding these departments were vertically separated from top to bottom and are headed by a Secretary-level officer in the Railway Board who are called the Members and it runs deep down to the grassroots level. “This resulted in officials working in silos. Its negative impact was visible as railway board or the Ministers on a number of occasions found different people accountable for a small part of a project, yet nobody is held accountable for the entire project,” he said. This led to inefficiency and hurt railways’ performance as tax-

payers’ money was wasted. Pointing to departmentalism in the organisation between the two cadres, the official said, “There was infighting over who will control the Diesel Locomotives -- either mechanical or electrical directorates.” On Tuesday, after the Cabinet cleared the organisational restructuring, the ministry in a statement said that unification of services was earlier recommended by various committees for reforming the railways, including the Prakash Tandon Committee (1994), Rakesh Mohan Committee (2001), the Sam Pitroda Committee (2012) and the Bibek Debroy Committee (2015). It also said that the modalities and unification of the services will be worked out by the Ministry of Railways in consulta-

tion with the Department of Personnel and Training with the approval of an alternative mechanism to be appointed by Cabinet in order to ensure fairness and transparency. The process will be completed within a year, it said. Former Railway Board Chairman V.K. Agarwal, however, differed from the government’s views, saying it is “not a right decision”.

“For example, a normal person cannot design the railway bridge and even an accountant or some one from the nontechnical department cannot do it,” Agarwal told IANS. Agarwal, during whose tenure Prakash Tandon Committee recommended some reforms, said that if there was a coordination problem among the cadres, then it should have been sorted out through proper

channels. “In railways, we not only need coordination but also optimization. We have divisions, nonpolytechnic and then board. And if any services were required, then it should have been done at the senior level or at the General Manager level rather than joining all the cadres,” Agarwal opined.

72 companies of paramilitary forces withdrawn from Jammu and Kashmir New Delhi (IANS): The Union Home Ministry has issued an order for withdrawing 72 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) or paramilitary forces from newlycreated Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir “with immediate effect”. Of the 72 companies being withdrawn, 24 are from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) while 12 each are from the Border Security Force (BSF), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order, issued on Monday, informed the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir that these security personnel are being withdrawn with “immediate effect”. A copy of the order was also sent from the Ministry to Inspector Generals (Operations) of the CRPF, the BSF, the ITBP, the CISF and the SSB for necessary follow-up action, and also to CRPF’s Additional Director General and J&K in charge Zulfiquar Hasan.

“It is to intimate that the matter has further been reviewed in this Ministry. It has been decided to withdraw 72 Coys (companies) of CAPFs (CRPF-24, BSF-12, CISF-12 and SSB-12) with immediate effect from J&K and revert back to their respective locations,” reads a fax message issued by the Ministry. The Home Ministry issued the order after the review of security situations in Jammu and Kashmir where these forces were deployed even before August 5 - the day the Centre announced abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, giving Jammu and Kashmir special status. On August 5, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament and moved a Bill to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir with an Assembly and Ladakh without one. Additional deployment of CAPF was made in Jammu and Kashmir much before the announcements by the Centre.

Union Cabinet gives nod to Chief of Defence Staff’s post New Delhi (IANS): The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Chief of Defence Staff ’s (CDS) post and its charter and duties. The CDS will be a 4-star general who will head the new Department of Military Affairs. “He will be drawing a salary equivalent to service chiefs, and will head the Department of Military Affairs to be created under the Ministry of Defence. He will function as its Secretary,” Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said during the Cabinet briefing. He will have all the powers like other secretaries, including financial. The CDS will act as the Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister on tri-services matters. The three service chiefs will continue to advise the Defence Minister on matters exclusively concerning their respective forces. The idea of creating the CDS’ post is that India should not have a fragmented approach. “Our entire military power will have to work in unison. All the three (services) should move simultaneously at the same

pace,” said a senior government official. The CDS was planned after looking into the changing nature of warfare, security environment and national security challenges. The aim is to bring about jointness between the armed forces of the country in training, procurement, staffing and operations, to enhance the quality of military advice given to the political leadership through integration of service inputs, and to develop and foster expertise in military affairs. “The CDS will work exclusively with military matters that fall within the purview of the Department of Military Affairs. The Department of Defence will deal with larger issues pertaining to defence of the country,” the official said. Now, the armed forces will fall under the ambit of Department of Military Affairs, which will have appropriate expertise to manage military affairs. The Department of Military Affairs will have the appropriate mix of civilian and military officers at every level. The department will promote jointness in

procurement, training and staffing for the three services. It will facilitate restructuring of military commands for optimal utilisation of resources by bringing about jointness in operations, including through establishment of joint/theatre commands. The CDS will also have a second role. He will be the permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. In this role, he will be supported by the Integrated Defence Staff. The detailed roles and responsibilities of the CDS are as under: The CDS will not exercise any military command, including over the three service chiefs. The CDS will administer tri-services organisations. Their military command will be with the chief of the duly notified service, which will play a predominant role in effective functioning of that specific tri-service organisation. “However, tri-services agencies/organisations/commands related to cyber and space will be under the command of the CDS,” said the official.

New Delhi (IANS): The first cabinet expansion in the Modi government’s second term and the announcement of the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president has been delayed. The major reason behind this is said to be the “inauspicious period”. If sources are to be believed, the BJP will undertake any major work related to the government or the organisation only after the inauspicious days which started from December 14 will be over on January 14, 2020. Party sources said that the BJP believes in doing all the important work as per the auspicious time (Shubh Mahurat). As of now organisational elections are going on in the party and it was expected that the party will announce a new national president in December. But as the inauspicious month started from December 14 which will continue till January 14 the announcement was delayed. The sources said that J.P. Nadda will be the new party president for the next three years because as per the party’s tradition one person can hold only one post at a time. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is holding the post only till the organisational elections end. As per the party’s constitution the party president is elected after the organisational elections have taken place in atleast 50 per cent of the states. On the other side, no cabinet expansion has happened after the Modi government came to power for the second time on May 30, 2019. The sources said that the expansion is also expected after the inauspicious days are over on January 14.

Amarinder Singh slams action to stop Rahul, Priyanka Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday condemned the Uttar Pradesh government’s action in stopping Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from crossing into Meerut to meet families of the victims of the anti-CAA protests. Terming it an uncalled for action, the Punjab Chief Minister slammed the UP government for the spate of curbs it has imposed on the opposition and citizens protesting the Citizenship Amendment

Act (CAA). In fact, he said, Rahul and Priyanka were travelling to Meerut not to protest but to share the grief of the kin of those killed in the recent police clashes with protesters. Reports indicate that the Congress leaders had even offered to go in groups of three, instead of collectively, but were prevented from entering Meerut. The Chief Minister earlier tweeted: “Strongly condemn the UP govt’s decision to stop @RahulGandhi & @ priyankagandhi from travel-

ling into Meerut to meet the families of the victims of the #CAAProtests. What India needs at this moment is a healing touch and not such curbs against opposition parties.” Protest is the democratic right of every citizen of India but the Uttar Pradesh government has been acting in a draconian manner to crack the whip on protesting citizens as if they were terrorists or gangsters, said Amarinder, citing instances of protesters being killed, maimed or arrested in police action.

Punjab Chief Minister hails JMMCongress-RJD victory in Jharkhand Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday hailed the victory of the Congress-JMM-RJD in the Jharkhand Assembly polls, terming it rejection of the divisive politics of the Bharatiya Janata Party

(BJP). Welcoming the election results, the Chief Minister said the reversal of the ruling BJP’s fortunes, which had begun earlier this year, has taken another leap forward with these polls. With these results, BJP’s

divisive agenda had not only been exposed but had also been rejected outright by the people, said Amarinder Singh, adding that the mandate marked the defeat of the ruling party’s communal politics.

Amarinder asks Akalis to clarify stand on NRC

Chandigarh (IANS): Slamming the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for their double standards on the issue of NRC and CAA, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday asked the party to clarify their stand on support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of which they allies in the Central government. The SAD had supported the ruling NDA’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Parliament, but had since come out with conflicting statements on the legislation, as well as the National Register of Citizens (NRC), he said, lambasting the Akalis for misleading the people on these sensitive issues. In a reaction in the wake of the recent statements of SAD President Sukhbir Badal and Rajya Sabha member Naresh Gujral, seeking inclusion of Muslims in the CAA, the Chief Minister said it was patently obvious that the Akalis were playing a double game in the matter. It was clear, he said, that the SAD leaders

had decided to backtrack on their earlier stand in view of the public protests and backlash triggered by the CAA and the NRC. This was not the first time the Akalis had shown such dual standards with regard to their relations with the BJP, said Amarinder Singh, pointing to the SAD’s support to Om Prakash Chautala’s INLD in the Haryana assembly elections even while continuing to be a part of the NDA. In fact, even while siding with the INLD in Haryana, the SAD had allied with BJP in Punjab, where by-elections were being held at the same time in a couple of constituencies, he added. It was time the SAD clarified their stand on their alliance with the NDA, said Amarinder Singh, adding that the people wanted to know whether the Akalis favoured BJP’s divisive and hardline ideology on key issues, including those that affect the Indian constitutional principles and values. week. Gurchet got bullet injuries, while Jobanpreet was declared dead in a private hospital, a police official said. Later, the inured was referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana city where he was critical but out of danger. The police have registered a murder case against the unidentified men.

Bathinda (IANS): Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan and Union Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Monday jointly inaugurated the OPD Services of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Bathinda. Vardhan said the institute would be beneficial not only for the state but also its

Vardhan said a satellite centre of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh would be

opened in Ferozepur district. He said the Union government is working on 22 AIIMS in the country to give better medical health services to the people. He said 157 new medical colleges are being established in the country. Harsimrat Kaur Badal said this AIIMS has fulfilled the demand for advanced super-specialty healthcare to

the people of the Malwa region for the first time since Independence. She said the entire institute would start running on full steam by August next year and that this would include start of inpatient departments in the 750-bed hospital. The AIIMS Bathinda was approved under Phase V of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in July 2016. The cost of the project is Rs 925 crore which will be completed by June 2020. The foundation stone for AIIMS at Bathinda was laid in November 2016.

AIIMS Bathinda has been planned as a 750-bedded medical institute on 177 acres having 10 specialty and 11 super specialty departments. It will also have 16 ultra-modern operation theatres. It has 100 seats in medical college and 60 seats in nursing college. Reviewing the progress of the implementation of action plans for clean rivers, NGT committee Chairman Justice Jasbir Singh gave directions to the pollution control board for timely

biology and chemotherapy will be added soon, a government statement said. There is also a provision of providing medicines through Amrit drug store, a government of India initiative, on discounted rates. As of now Ayushman Bharat scheme will not be implemented as only OPD services are being provided. The scheme will be implemented once the indoor services are started in November 2020. The PGIMER in Chandigarh has been entrusted the responsibility of mentoring AIIMS Bathinda.

completion of the treatment plants and also directed all the departments to adhere to the timelines of the action plans for pollution control measures. The committee observed non-compliance by effluent treatment plants has been reduced from 45 per cent in April 2019 to 20 per cent in November due to monitoring and improvement of operational practices. It was also decided to organise a regional conference on the environment on February 7 in Ludhiana to sensitise the residents about the ill-effects of pollution.

Odisha to renovate Mangu, other mutts: Punjab delegation Bhubaneswar (IANS): A delegation led by Punjab’s Lok Insaaf Party MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, after holding discussions with Odisha government officials on Monday, said that the state government will renovate the Mangu, Punjabi and Bali mutts as part of the beautification drive of Jagannath Temple in Puri. Members of the Sikh community had on Sunday taken out a rally in Bhubaneswar protesting against the Odisha government’s decision to demolish Mangu and other mutts for the beautification of the Jagannath

Temple. “All my misunderstandings are resolved. We are very much satisfied with the state government’s renovation plans for Mangu, Punjabi, and Bali mutts as part of the Puri beautification drive. These mutts are connected with Guru Nanak Dev,” said the MLA. He said the Odisha government has assured that it will renovate the mutts after the eviction drive is completed. The delegation held a meeting with Minister of State for Home Dibyasankar Mishra and government officials here.

“Two MLAs and a Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) member from Punjab and some other members had come to express their feelings. We had a discussion. They were very happy with the government’s renovation plan,” said the minister. Earlier in September, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had appealed to his Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik not to demolish the institutions associated with Guru Nanak Dev.

Hiccups: Are they a nuisance or a medical problem?

edies? It’s because with hiccups not much has changed. For most hiccups, holding your breath is as good as any prescription. I enjoyed the advice of another old medical text. It suggested that if hiccups bother you too much, “Take a good shot of whisky and go to sleep. If you can’t sleep, can’t rest, can’t eat, then see a doctor.” This reminded me of Dr. William Osler’s advice for a cold, “Go to bed, put your hat on the bedpost, start drinking whisky, stop when you see two hats.” Sometimes, old advice is still the best advice. Sign-up at www.docgiff.com to receive my weekly e-newsletter and follow me on Facebook and Twitter @giffordjonesmd. Online: docgiff.com Comments: info@docgiff.com HIPPOCRATES, in 400 B.C., counselled that, “Sneezing will stop a hiccup.” But for centuries the hiccup also triggered laughter when it happens while talking to friends. But medical reports show there are occasions when a hiccup is no laughing matter. We all know that everyone encounters hiccups at some time in their life. Most of the time they’re completely harmless and eventually stop after a brief period. Hiccups happen when the diaphragm, the muscular structure separating the chest and abdominal organs, experiences a sudden involuntary spasm. This spasm is followed by closure of the slit-like opening between the vocal cords causing the hiccup. Dr. Timothy Pfanner, assistant professor of medicine at Texas A&M University College of Medicine, says persistent hiccups may last more than 48 hours, and intractable, longer than 30 days. He prescribes medical help if hiccups change from occurring once in a while to becoming more persistent. Pfanner adds hiccups are seen more frequently in smokers, who are constantly swallowing air which distends the stomach. It’s also a problem for those who consume excessive amounts of alcohol. This triggers hiccups when stomach acids back up into the lower end of the esophagus (food pipe). Other cases may be due to ear infections. Sometimes hiccups are trying to tell you and your doctor something. One 68-year-old man decided to get medical attention after being plagued with hiccups for four days. Examination revealed nothing serious, so he was prescribed a muscle relaxant to calm the annoying reflex. Two days later the man returned with the same symptom. This time doctors did more tests and discovered he had suffered a coronary attack. Pfanner says doctors should start worrying when patients have intractable hiccups. In these cases something serious may be causing the problem such as cancer of the brain or a malignancy of the stomach. In fact, he says, hiccups may even point to a tumour in the neck or goiter. And since repeated hiccups convulse the muscles that control the diaphragm, patients who experience persistent spasms, can develop damage to the nerves that control these muscles. But I must repeat, don’t panic if you have hiccups, as they’re usually more of a nuisance than a signal of a life-threatening condition. To see how hiccups are treated I looked at old medical texts. One gave the best advice, do nothing. They fade away. If they don’t, several home remedies were suggested which involve increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. This can be achieved by holding the breath and counting slowly to 10 or by breathing into a paper bag for a short period of time. But in both cases, stop before you get dizzy. Another old medical text suggested gently massaging the eyeballs, but being gentle so as not to injure the eye. This same book said that pulling out the tongue with a clean handkerchief for 20 seconds often worked, but to do it yourself. Or try swallowing a tablespoon of sugar. And if all else failed, one doctor suggested standing on your head. Why do I mention old rather than new rem-

What’s Sarna? Tribals demand separate religion in Jharkhand New Delhi (IANS): Sarna, a so-called “religion” based on the concept of nature worship, is followed by tribals in several Indian states including Jharkhand. Tribals in Jharkhand have long been demanding a separate Sarna religious code in the Census. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM), which is set to form part of the new government in the state, has promised to implement the Sarna Code in its election manifesto. It will be interesting to see whether Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-

led new state government implements the Sarna Code in the state or not. “The demand for a separate Sarna religious code in the Census has been pending for a long time. Sarna followers are worshippers of nature. Jharkhand has 32 tribal groups, of which eight tribes are from Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG),” G.N. Jha, Professor of Anthropology, Hazaribagh University told IANS. “These tribal groups are Hindus. However, few have converted to Christianity,” Jha added.

A social activist said that the tribals are demanding for Sarna Code as they want to “save their religious identity”. Jharkhand has seen three tribal Chief Ministers -- Babulal Marandi from Munda tribe, Shibu Soren from Santhal tribe and Madhu Koda from Kora tribe. Raghubar Das was the first non-tribal CM of the state. Now Hemant Soren, son of Shibu Soren, will take oath as the new CM. “A separate religious code in the Census can’t be provided to tribals. They will have to choose between

the six options under the religion column as the Registrar General of India has said that it’s not natural to form a separate religious code, at present,” a government official said on the condition of anonymity. Bandhan Tigga, Dharm Guru (priest) of Raji Padha Sarna Prarthna Sabha, once claimed that there are 62 lakh [6.2 million] Sarna tribals in Jharkhand. Meanwhile, Sarna Prarthna Sabha in Ranchi is carrying out a population survey of Sarna tribals for its Mission 2021.

It is believed that in 2011 Census, 42 lakh [4.2 million] people from Jharkhand and about six crore people from across the country had mentioned their religion as Sarna, which was then included in others section. Gond and Bheel tribes, which comprise of one crore [10 million] population-each have not been included in Sarna religious code as these tribes consider themselves as a separate religion. Under the Census 2001, there were six options under the religion column --

Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, and Sikh -which were given 1-6 code numbers. People from other religious groups were asked to mention their religions but not to highlight the code numbers. Likewise, in 2011 Census, the same procedure was followed. Tribals said that in 1951 Census, the ninth column for religion was “tribe”, which was later removed. Due to its removal, the tribal population embraced different religions, causing major loss to the community.

Delhi school boys take pledge to respect women en while girls promised to make their brothers take the same oaths at home. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal administers the oath to the school students across Delhi through a live video telecast in vari-

sues and crimes against women. In the event, the boys were made to take an oath to respect women and to never misbehave with any women and the Chief Minister requested the girl students to talk to their brothers at home and take the same oath, and to warn them of the repercussions of such acts. He also requested the teachers to conduct a onehour classroom discussion on the experiences of the students and the reactions of their family members on the oath. “We launched the women’s safety campaign today along with 22 lakh children from all schools in Delhi. The police and the law and order have to be corrected. CCTV cameras and street lights are also being

ment and the police must act upon such incidents, but they will not be able to achieve anything until we change the mindset of the people. We have to change the thought process of the people to stop such incidents.” He also asked the students to suggest solutions to stop crimes against women. “I want all of you to tell me what can be the reasons behind the increase in such brutal incidents and what should be the solution?” He said that the convicts are not scared of the consequences of their actions, they do not fear the law and the cases filed against them usually take a long time to get resolved. Kejriwal suggested that the families should disown convicts and should not try to save them from punishment.

He emphasised that we, as a society, need to change the mindsets of the people to put an end to the crime against women. “We are gathered here today to address a very important issue, which is not generally discussed in homes or amongst friends and families. Chhattisgarh sees decline in Naxal violence in last one year Raipur (IANS): With the change of guard in Chhattisgarh, left wing extremism has been on the decline in the state over the past one year with fewer deaths. This data was provided by an officer associated with the Naxal operations in the state. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has consistently claimed to have an action plan to end the Naxalite problem. He said, “To end Naxalism, development requires trust and security. People should have faith in government. I have returned the tribals their lands, gave them employment opportunities and have spent

money under the District Mineral Foundation for their better health, education and nutrition. As a result of the government’s efforts, there has been a 40 per cent reduction in Naxalite activities. Fourteen districts -- Sukma, Bijapur, Dantewada, Bastar, Kondagaon, Kanker, Narayanpur, Rajnandgaon, Balod, Dhamtari, Mahasamund, Gariaband, Balrampur and Kabirdham are affected by the Naxal violence. In these areas, Naxalites have targeted politicians and influential people in the past. The Bhupesh Baghel-led government launched a campaign to build trust among the citizens of the

Naxal-affected region in the state, while on the other hand, efforts were made to surround the Naxalites through security forces. From 166 incidents of police-Naxalite encounters in 2018, the number has come down to 112 incidents this year. Thus, there is a decline of 32.53 per cent, the data showed. Similarly, 124 Naxalites were killed in encounters last year, while 77 Naxalites have been killed this year. Last year, 89 people lost their lives in various Naxalite incidents, while 46 civilians lost their lives this year. Thus, there has been a decrease of 48.31 per cent in the number of

dead civilians this year as compared to the previous year. This year 19 policemen were killed in Naxal-related incidents, while the figure was 53 last year. The number of martyred policemen has come down by 64.15 per cent this year, the data revealed.

There were 77 incidents of IED explosions last year and 41 this year. This year, the incidence of IED explosions decreased by 46.75 per cent. There was a 56 to 25 per cent decrease in arms and robbery incidents. State Inspector General of Police (Naxal Operation)

Sundar Raj P. told IANS, “The campaign of faith, development and security in Naxal-affected areas is yielding results. The Naxalite outfits have weakened. Police have got the support of the common man. The operational capability of the police has brought a big change.

Rajasthan police to give self-defence training to women Jaipur (IANS): The Rajasthan police will establish Mahila Shakti Self-Defence Centres in all the districts of the state from January 1 to ensure the safety of women and girls by training them in self-defence, police officials confirmed on Tuesday. Necessary instructions have been issued by Director General of Police Bhupendra Singh to all the range Inspector Generals and district Superintendents of Police in this regard. Singh said the police will open self-defence centres from January 1 with the objective of ensuring the safety of women and girls in the state, while empowering them for self-defence. It will also make them aware of their rights and laws, and

check crime against women. Singh said that any working woman, housewife, girl student or any institute which wants the female staff of their organisation to be a part of this drive can enrol at the self-defence training centres. He informed that this training programme will be of seven days duration during which training will be imparted by master trainers free of cost. Registrations can be done at these centres before December 31, 2019. However, if someone misses the deadline, the registration can also be done during the training period which shall be looked into by the nodal officer of the district.

The Song Of Names (PG) **** Man Hunt!

Brilliant on all counts turns out to be The Song of Names. Made by Canadian super producer Robert Lantos this enchanting take of long lost love is now ensnaring viewers at Vancouver’s Fifth Avenue Cinemas on Burrard Street opening Christmas Day Set in Europe our story takes place in 1951 for starters. Here we see the boyhood friendship that a few 12 years old would endure. Not quite separated by birth this two hour drama focuses almost exclusively in the kids - one from good old British stock named Martin and the other named David , a gifted Jewish Pole with energy to burn and God--given talent second to none. In a multi-decade search that goes global The Song of Names turns into a mystery that even would befuddle they likes of

Colombo or Maigret. When David goes missing its up to now a now mature Martin to go on a multi-content search that will touch all. Told by three different sets of actors by far the most dynamic pairing and most vital are the early years of these soon to be new-found and ultimately far-flung acquaintances for life . Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs) sincerely plays the motivated Martin while Clive Owen ( The Bourne Identity) portrays the more troubled. violin virtuoso. But the key foundations to this tale are the kids with Luke Doyle in his first important feature film simply mesmerizing as the 9-13 master musician and Gerran Howell up to the task as your tradition British school

boy not exactly at first enamored with having a stranger in his midst. Steeped in tradition and history The Song of Names is full of heart and soul, given the solemn tale of the horrors of Nazi Germany and the annihilation of the Jewish people during the Holocaust . The Song of Names is well researched and truly moving. Brave performances full of raw emotion and sincerity will reel you in and make you think. Timely Especially in Today’s world where global anti-Semitism is on the rise along with other forms of intolerance, persecution and discrimination of other minority groups this movie must me seen, Never again.

By Autoreviewman Cadillac is on is journey of continuous improvement and refinement. Point in case in the new 2020 Cadillac XTS 6, a three row crossover built to take on the world’s best. In the flesh, the new XT6 is certainly a most handsome vehicle, sharing some of its genetics with the smaller Cadillac XT5 CUV which shared the same platform. Athletic, lithe, and taut-looking, the XT6 works as an example of the softer approach to styling; There is a lot less of the hard straight lines but the XT6 is identifiable as Caddy, thanks to the signature vertical lights. The longer wheelbase and length of the XT6 compared to the XT5 also give it that “reach” as stylist call it. The XT6 can sets either seven or six. Engine wise, there is a proven 3.6L V6 unit found on the XT5. The V6 offers a creditable 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, transmitted via as nine-speed automatic gearbox. Trim wise, there are two available models, the Premium Luxury trim (MRSP from $60,998) and the Sport, (MRSP from $63,798). The Premium luxury version offers Galvano finished appointments, bit more brightwork on the exterior, red taillights, interior exotic wood accents, and a few other bits and pieces for the interior like the cool digital rear camera mirror. The Sport features a gloss black grille, and trim, tinted neutral density tail lamps, unique interior trim with carbon fibre accents and décor, optional 21 inch wheels, twin clutch sport control AWD and adaptive dampers as standard. Both the Sport and Premium Luxury models get drive modes that adjust parameters like steering and transmission response, the optional Platinum package offers upgraded interior. Real- time Adaptive dampers are part of the Platinum Package on the Premium Luxury trim. The new XT6 features a roomy interior, with none of the three rows cramped. The XT6 comes with a choice of two captain’s chairs or a middle bench that seats three. The front seat are very comfortable with a rich, refined leather seating surfaces - ventilated and heated up front with heated rear seats, and air ionizer; I like the ample legs, shoulder and headroom up front. The driver’s cockpit features a new steering wheel design and upgraded instrument panel, Plush micro suede, engineered wood, and copper carbon-fiber weave are used as decorative tri mind look very ice indeed. Cadillac’s latest Cadillac User Experience software, called “CUE 3.5” makes is entry and can

now be operated via s a console-mounted wheel as we all as the touch panel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, as does 4G LTE WIFi and wireless charging. There are also six USB ports (including two in the third row), made up of both Type-A and Type-C ports an 8- or 14-speaker Bose sound system. Connectivity includes wireless phone charging and NFC technology to allow Bluetooth pairing of Android phones quickly and simply. A second-row bench seat comes as standard with a tilt and slide feature, and can be upgraded to captain’s chairs. They come heated and there is ample storage and amenities for long journeys. The third row seats are pretty comfortable for adults if you plan on short journeys and offer decent enough head-and legroom. They also come power-folding as standard. The cargo area, is accessed by a foot-activated tailgate as standard, and has a handy storage bin beneath the rear floor. Safety is excellent On the XT6 with a plethora of standard safety options, such as: forward collision assist with pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert with lane-keep assist, front and rear park assist, and seven airbags. Driver-assist systems including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, lane departure warning, steering assist, and night vision with automatic high-beam and adaptive headlights, I particularly like the haptic safety alerts that vibrate the seat to give you warning for various features. On road acceleration and cruising speed is good, I like the responsiveness of the engine, and the responsive transmission programming. The over boosted steering is a tad light, good for navigating parking and low speed driving. The XT6 offers a hushed, comfortable ride rides quietly with little road noise. The Sport models offer a more performance orientated drive, with a more aggressive nature to transmission shifts, with the dualclutch auto and split torque distribution between the rear wheels translates. The steering ratio is quicker, the ride a little firmer and reflexes just a tad quicker than the Premium. All in all- a very good Three-row premium Crossover that will satisfy both dyed in the wool Cadillac fans and those new to the brand. Highly recommended. 2020 Cadillac XT6 Priced from: $60,998 - $63,798. More info at Cadillac.ca

Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic Wagon: Premium performance and versatility By Auto Reviewman The Mercedes-AMG C43 is a stellar example of a modern compact high -performance car from the esteemed German automaker. Key components of the Mercedes AMG range are to use the most powerful engines in their class, fitted in superbly engineered chassis. A host of performance upgrades and jewel - like cabins are finished for any AMG to easily match arch rivals Audi’s S Line and BMW’s M Series. The subject of our test was the Mercedes AMG C43 wagon, an exceedingly rare beast in this part of the world, although it’s a popular option the Europe. The C43 is also available as a sedan, and comes off a 2019 revamp, the C43 now offers optional digital gauges, a new standard 10.2-inch infotainment screen and new interior upholstery and trim choices. It looks really cool with its elongated silhouette and neat unfussy lines. There are new lights for 2019 and a smart twin-louvre front grill. Priced at a base $76,380, the list of stan-

dard feature is long, while desirable options include such AMG niceties as carbon-fibre interior trim, 19inch twin five-spoke rims. Spoilers and aero packages. The 385 hp 3.0L biturbo sixcylinder engine, has been tuned and massaged for optimum power. Transmission is via a 9 speed auto with manual mode. Other changes include a retuned AMG Suspension system with adaptive dampers. Also standard are an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, rear torque vectoring and dynamic engine mounts. The C 43 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds Step into the interior into the rather firm seats, but nigh

on perfect seating position and you are greeted with a new 12.3-inch fully digital dashboard screen as standard. A chunky flat-bottom AMG Performance steering wheel outfitted in Nappa leather and Dinamica micro suede comes as party of the AMG Driver’s Package. This steering wheel, features a plethora of buttons that let the driver adjust elements within the gauge cluster display, as well as adaptive cruise control, infotainment and phone controls and voice commands. Instrumentation is via a fully digital gauge cluster and the 12.3-inch digital instrument display that can be fully optimized to display information in a number of ways.

Additional customization can be adjusted on the centre console, and via rotary controller to activate the instrument display. Oh, did I forget the racy red seatbelts! Fancy toys include active exhaust control auto-stop/ start functionality, and the optional Driver’s Package that also features AMG Track Pace that via an app within the Command system allows you to monitor and store performance data during track driving, including acceleration, speed, and lap times. Other interior options include a touchpad controller, a 360-degreecamera, navigation, audiophile quality Burmester surround sound system, foot-activated power tailgate, wireless phone charging, Interior wise the ambient lighting can be adjusted among 64 colour choices. The rear cabin is roomy enough for two large adults or three kids at a push. The wagon has a 490-litre rear cargo area, expanding to 1,510 litres with all the seats folded near-flat. The rear hatch door is power oper-

ated affair with foot tap auto open feature. On the road, the wonderful sounding 385 hp 3.0L biturbo six-cylinder engine. It’s all rally sounding pops, snarls and burbles. Acceleration is smooth, brisk, Steering was precise and direct with good feedback. The multiple drive modes allowed for Comfort, Sport, Sport +, or Individual, which allows the driver to customize their preferences for suspension, steering, and throttle response. The adaptive, multimode suspension features three-stage electronically controlled shocks. This is no springy luxo wagon, the suspension although not race car rock hard is very firm in the sport settings, allowing for spot on handling. Switching to comfort mode allows a little more latitude. You can use a Sport manual shifting option available on the ninespeed transmission via the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. I loved the balanced handling. The low center of gravity, weight distribution and comparatively

low curb weight, all mean a smooth, athletic driving experience. Sport and Sport + driving mode beef up engine response – adjusting a number of parameters, including: throttle mapping, transmission shifts suspension stiffness and of course the intoxicating exhaust note. Fuel Consumption is rated at (City / Highway / Combined) L/100km: 12.4 / 8.9 / 10.8. To sum up, the C 43 AMG Wagon and is one of the most desirable models in my opinion from the C-Class lineup. Down sides are few, the hard seats and firm ride may not be for people who like cushy, plush, soft- riding cars. But with its versatile wagon format, superb V6 engine, and delectable premium interior, the C43 is well worth the rather expensive asking price. That unique exhaust note by the way will let everyone know you have arrived! 2019 Mercedes AMG C43 4MATIC wagon. Base priced from $59,900 - $76,380. More info at www.mercedesbenz.ca

Volvo V60 T5: Premium Wagon is Pure Swedish Class By Autoreviewman Under the parent Chinese Corporation Geely, iconic Swedish car maker Volvo has steadily reasserted its position as a premium automaker of prestigious sedans, SUVs and wagons Take for example the V60Series a five-passenger, mid-size premium station wagon - smooth, classic looking and elegantly smart. The V60 T5 front-drive and

T6 on-demand all-wheeldrive models are both sleek, expensive, powered by 2.0-litre, inline four-cylinder with both a supercharger and turbocharger. The 2019 engine produces 316 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque. That’s up from 302 hp in 2018. And it’s faster too, with the 2019 V60 T6 doing 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, compared to 6.0 seconds with the 2018 model. There is an eight-speed

Geartronic transmission and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters to transmit power. Interiors are faultless works of art, superbly designed with premium look and feel. The VolvoV60 does not come cheap with an entry price of $43,900 to $55,450, depending on the spec, options and not including a $2,015 destination fee. For 2019, the V60 wheelbase is enlarged 3.8

inches, with slight increase in almost every dimension, giving a claimed 20 percent increase in load space over the previous V60, as well as the roomiest rear seat If you are new to the Volvo brand you will be mighty impressed, the black interior of our Inscription tester with the metal chrome and aluminum detailing was built like a bank vault and felt like a private gentleman

club- albeit in slick black leather! The seats are so comfortable you will never want to get out of the car! Every detail, switch, and knob design is heavy feeling and delightful to the touch. Volvo offer three trim levels: Momentum, Rdesign and Inscription. (As tested). The latter offers more cosmetic upgrades such as: Dynamic chassis technology, driftwood inlays

inside, ventilated seat with comfort padding 3-spoke leather steering wheel, textile carpet kit, Volvo metalsill moulding, Inscription grille, bright integrated roof rails, and standard 18-inch alloy 10-spoke wheels, as well as enhanced equipment, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and B & O premium audio. 2020 BMW M340i: The very Soul of High performance is back!

By Autoreviewman The BMW 3 Series is an icon. And for the 2020 model year, the seventh generation version of this superb sports sedan pare excellence arrives – wider, longer, taller, and having an extended longer wheelbase. It is now more of familial bent with all 3 Series featuring similar styling cues, the sleek roof line, bigger twin kidney grille and the addition of BMW laser lights on some models, with M Sport providing 19-inch wheels, M Sport brakes and new front fascia’s. 3 Series interiors also become a tad roomier, with enhanced technology, styling and materials. Of particular interest are the performance M340i and 330i. The 330i now has an as standard 255 hp and 295 lb-ft, while the new M340i aa tested arrives with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft, up 62 hp and 39 lb-ft on the 2018 340i! The 330i and 330e arrive with AWD, but the M340i will be available with Rear Wheel Drive or All Wheel Dive. All 3 Series get a single eight-speed automatic transmission and updated Performance Chassis Technology. It goes without saying. Engineering and performance have all been improved. We tested a very handsome 2020 Model: (based priced at $61,850) M340i with a beautiful Cognac Vernasca Leather interior option. Test model equipment included: Premium Excellence Package $8,300 featuring such items as: Comfort Access, Lumbar Support, Seat Heating, Front and Rear,

Walknappa Leather Dashboard, Ambient Lighting, Traffic Jam Assistant, Driving Assistant Professional, BMW Laserlight Headlights, Parking Assistant Plus with Surround View, Head-Up Display, Harman/Kardon Sound System, Wireless Charging with Extended Bluetooth and USB, BMW Gesture Control, and WiFi Hotspot. Stand-alone options included: Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, ($1,450and the Adaptive M Suspension $600. Price as Tested for the press car came to $72,200. The M340i interior, is impressive as usual. A little stark and obsessive, but just the way I think BMW drivers will like it- neat , efficient, exacting and of a superior quality, design and execution. The dash is updated with a fully digitized cockpit. Cool fact, there is camera mounted above the gauges that watches your eyes to make sure you don’t drift off if you happen to select the semi-autonomous adaptive cruise function. Other safety aids include: the Back-Up Assistant feature – part of the $2,100 Advanced Driver Assistant package that also provides highbeam assist, surround-view camera, and traffic-jam assistant. Other improvements include a wrap larger heads-up display. The addition of BMW Connected 7.0 offers s huge 12.3-inch main screen with a nav map (that can also appear in the gauge cluster, if you so choose). Of course, it is on the road where the rear-

wheel drive BMW M340i as tested offers the pure driving experience that 3 Series enthusiasts have enjoyed for the past 40 years. With reduced weight compared to its allwheel drive sibling and enhanced steering feel compared to the outgoing models, the M340i is just that bit more exciting to drive than the heavier M340i, although the xDrive that has the slight edge in adverse road conditions. The new version of the straight-six engine, developed for the BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans, produces 382 hp and peak torque of 369 lb-ft. and offers an explosive off the line 0-100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds. It sounds good too! The characteristic sound of the six-cylinder, inline engine, producing a satisfying wail thanks in part to the dualpipe M Sport exhaust system. You can also modify the back pressure exhaust sound in SPORT and SPORT+ modes, which can be activated via the Driving Experience Control switch.

Transmission shifts are quicker with the new, optimized hydraulic control system and shorter gearing for improved response and acceleration. The 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s Launch Control function optimizes traction during acceleration off the line more effectively than in previous versions and shift paddles on the steering wheel allow for manual gear selection. Ride and handling control is better with BMW’s beefed up suspension mounts, and additional hydraulic stop dampers that better control the rebound and compression of each corner. Expand this with body rigidity up 25 percent, and as much as 50 percent in certain areas, and the M340i offers almost race-car like cornering, but without sacrificing comfort. Not a lot to complain about. The biggest caveat is which one to go for - the rear wheel drive M340i or the Xdrive version. My money is one the M340i RWD- offering lower weight, offering a shade more front end attack on fasts corners and quicker exiting. Pricing is actually pretty good considering the level of performance and equipment compared to the competition. Highly recommended for performance drivers everywhere. 2020 BMW M340i based priced at $61,850. Price as tested with options: $72,200. More info at www.bmw.ca

Volvo V60 T5: Premium Wagon is Pure Swedish Class CONTINUED FROM 17 The V60 Inscription interior offers a cool, neat streamlined ambience, Most of the major functions are controlled via a nine-inch touchscreen that contains Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system, featuring a large tablet style screen operated with touch, swipe, poke and pinch motions to activate the car’s functions. It all works extremely well. Meanwhile Volvo always does the most comfortable car seats on the planet and they are present and correct in both front and rear. Cargo room is generous —558 litres with rear seats up, 1,441 litres with rear seats folded It goes without saying safety is very high with Volvo. Major features in the new V60, include the standard City Safety system with Auto-

brake technology and the optional Pilot Assist system (part of the $1,500 Convenience package). The first uses automatic braking and detection systems to assist the driver in avoiding potential collisions. Volvo say’s it’s the only system found in a vehicle that can recognize pedestrians, cyclists and large animals.) The upgraded and semi-autonomous

Pilot Assist supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking. The V60 also feature the debut of Volvo’s new Oncoming Braking function, a safety system should the car sense a head-on collision is inevitable, automatically activates maximum braking. The system goes into action two-tenths of a second before impact reducing crash force significantly. On the road, the Volvo powertrain offers four drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, and Individual. The V60 offer the best driving ambience when Comfort is selected. The ride is excellent, and suspension suppressed noise, harshness and vibration very well. Dynamic mode sharpens up the driving experience a tad, and the V60 handles twisty roads and bends with effortless grace. The Volvo V60

wagon is a luxurious and practical premium vehicle - a good alternative to more fuel thirsty SUVs or crossovers, but still offers a cavernous and versatile interior. Fuel consumption is rated at: (Premium) 11.1/7.3/9.4L/100 km city/highway/combined the available allwheel drive is also a plus for our unpredictable Canadian winters. Gorgeous looking, rare, sleek and expensive looking, the Volvo is a wonderful car to drive and own. If I had to buy a wagon, I know which one I would like parked on the driveway! Highly recommended! 2019 Volvo V60 Wagon Inscription priced from $55,400. Plus options, taxes and destination Website www.Volvo.ca
