Inspector General of Police (NIA) Alok Mittal addresses a press conference. New Delhi (IANS): The National Investigation Agency on Wednesday claimed that it had arrested 10 people, including a group leader of a newly-traced Islamic State module, “Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam”, that was allegedly planning terror attacks on some political personalities and the security establishment as well as crowded places in Delhi and the national capital region. The arrest was made after the NIA carried out searches at 17 places, including six places in East Delhi’s Jafarabad area, six places in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha, two places each in Lucknow and Hapur and one place in Meerut. The agency had registered a case on December 20 under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Explosive Substances Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Addressing a press conference, NIA spokesperson and Inspector General of Police (NIA) Alok Mittal said that the suspects were planning attacks in Delhi but he refused to share when they were planning those attacks. He said the agency arrested the head of the Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam, Mufti Suhail, a resident of Amroha from his house, who is also a Maulvi in a mosque.
The official said the module was planning attacks on important political and security offices in Delhi as well as crowded places. “They were planning to detonate a remote-controlled bomb or a fidayeen kind of attack,” he said. Asked about the handler of the Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam, Mittal said the agency was trying to ascertain his identity and his country. He said the arrested suspects also tried making a bullet-proof fidayeen vest. It was recovered from Amroha. A country-made rocket launcher, 12 pistols, 112 alarm clocks, 100 mobile phones, 135 SIM cards, many laptops and various electronic gadgets, besides 150 rounds of ammunition were also recovered during the searches. The NIA also seized 25 kg of explosive material, such as potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, sulphur, sugar material paste, mobile phone circuits, batteries, 51 pipes, remote control car triggering switch, wireless digital doorbell for remote switch, steel containers, electric wires, knife, sword, IS-related literature and Rs 750,000 in cash. The official said the group was a self-funded one and a few of the members stole gold ornaments from their homes and sold them
Arms and ammunition seized by police. to fund their activities. “During questioning two brothers confessed that they sold gold jewellery worth Rs 500,000-600,000,” the official said. He said that the group came on the NIA’s radar after credible information that a group of pro-IS individuals have formed a terrorist gang and are preparing to carry out terrorist attacks targeting vital installations, sensitive locations and crowded places in and around Delhi and the national capital region (NCR). “The inputs were further developed and field verifications were done. It was ascertained that Suhail alias Hazrath and his associates have mobilized funds and have procured weapons, ammunition and explosive material to prepare IEDs and bombs and they plan to carry out explosions and fidayeen attacks at places of importance in and around Delhi and also target crowded places,” the IG said. Mittal said that all the arrested people are in the age group of 20 to 29 years. Besides Suhail, the agency arrested Saeed, 28, Raees Ahmed, Saqib Iftekar, 26 and Mohammad Irshad from Amroha. It arrested Anas Yunus, 24, a B. Tech student of Amity University in
Noida, Rashid Zafar Raq, 23, Zubair Malik, 20 and his brother Zaid Malik, 22 and Mohammad Azam, 35, from Delhi’s Jafarabad area of Delhi. According to NIA officials, Yunus was instrumental in procuring electrical items, alarm clocks and batteries, etc. in furtherance of their terror conspiracy. The two brothers Saeed and Raees arrested from Amroha had procured a huge quantity of explosive material for preparing IEDs and pipe bombs and were instrumental in fabricating a rocket launcher to carry out terrorist attacks. Mittal also said that Azam, who runs a medical shop in Seelampur area of Delhi and Saqib Iftekar in Amroha helped Suhail in arranging the weapons. He said that the two brothers Zaid and Zubair were also part of the terror conspiracy and were instrumental in procuring batteries, connectors, SIM cards on fake documents and mobilising funds for buying bomb-making material. Asked how these people made bombs and the rocket launcher, the officer said that they took the help of the Internet to make bombs and the rocket launcher. He said that after the questioning of the six other accused more arrests will be made in the case.

Nawaz Sharif moved to jail in Lahore Lahore (IANS): Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was moved on Tuesday from a prison in Rawalpindi to the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, where he will serve the seven-year prison sentence handed to him for corruption a day earlier. Fazeel Asghar, Home Secretary of Punjab province, told Geo News that a B-class room was readied for Sharif at Kot Lakhpat Jail with a TV set, bed, blanket, heater, a chair and table. He was provided a helper and will also be allowed food from home. Asghar said the 68-year-old Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader would be
placed in the same compound as his brother, Shehbaz Sharif, also sentenced for corruption, although they would be in different cells. He added that instructions were issued to ensure strict security measures in the jail and anyone who indulged in vandalism will be booked under terrorism charges. A judge of the National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan’s anti-corruption body,
sentenced Sharif to seven years jail and imposed a fine of $2.5 million on him on Monday after ruling that Al-Azizia Steel Mills -- a Saudi Arabian firm carrying the name of his son -- belonged to the former Prime Minister, who was unable to demonstrate how the project was funded. At the same time, the judge found him innocent in another case of alleged corruption concerning the Flagship Investments firm in the UK for lack of evidence. The trial against the Sharifs commenced on September 14, 2017 after Pakistan’s anti-corruption body filed three cases relating to the Avenfield properties case,
Protesters deface Rajiv Chowk signboard in Delhi
New Delhi (IANS): Survivors of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots on Wednesday defaced a signboard of Rajiv Chowk in Connaught Place and demanded the renaming of the place after revolutionary leader Shaheed Bhagat Singh. A video, which surfaced online, showed the protesters, including women, raising slogans against Rajiv Gandhi as they garlanded the signboard with shoes and slippers and splashed black paint on ‘Rajiv’. The incident comes a day after a statute
of the late Prime Minister was vandalised in Ludhiana in Punjab by Akali Dal leaders. Holding Rajiv Gandhi responsible for the 1984 riots, the protesters demanded that the area be renamed as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk. “A case has been registered at the Connaught Place police station on the complaint of the New Delhi Municipal Council. The probe is underway and we are identifying the people with the help of CCTV,” DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma told IANS. The Akali Dal, on Wednesday, said the actions were justified. “We are neither supporting such things nor condemning. All the actions of the survivors are justified. If you are denied justice for 34 years, it is normal to be angry. Their anger against the Congress is obvious as the party has embraced the murders. Morally, the Congress cannot say that the act was wrong,” Akali leader M.S. Sirsa told IANS.
Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment Limited on the Supreme Court’s directives in the landmark Panamagate verdict. Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar were sentenced to 10 years, seven years and one year in prison, respectively by the same court in July in the Avenfield

case -- ownership of four luxury flats in London. They later bailed on appeal when the Islamabad High Court suspended their sentence in September. Sharif ’s sons were accused in all three references whereas daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar were accused in the Avenfield refer-
ence only. In July 2017, Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ousted Sharif as Prime Minister and barred him from public office for life after an investigation spurred by the publication of the Panama Papers found that he failed to disclose payments from a company belonging to his son.

Akhilesh lashes out at Congress for leaving lone SP MLA out of MP cabinet Lucknow (IANS): Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday lashed out at the Congress for not including its sole legislator in Madhya Pradesh in the cabinet despite its support in formation of the government and attaining the majority mark. Talking to the media, the former UP Chief Minister said
that by doing so, the Congress had “cleared the path for UP”. This statement from the 45-year-old leader is being seen as another indication of the growing space and disenchantment of the SP from the Congress and the likelihood of the Congress being kept out of the proposed “grand alliance” in Uttar Pradesh
for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, Mayawati, the Bahujan Samaj party (BSP) supremo and a prospective partner in the “Maha Gathbandhan” has already given enough hints of acting tough on the Congress. Miffed with the Congress, the BSP chief had, soon after extending support to the Con-

gress in MP, said that people had with heavy heart voted for the Congress and that she was extending support only to keep the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at bay. Akhilesh Yadav, meanwhile, also slammed the Yogi Adityanath government in the state and accused it of poor handling of the law and order in the state. Citing the mob violence in Bulandshahr, burning of a girl in Agra and crime in Gorakhpur, the former Chief Minister also targeted Governor Ram Naik indirectly by saying that
in his government, the Raj Bhawan used to raise questions on the law and order scenario, while now he is hosting the government at the Raj Bhawan. He also welcomed the move of K. Chandrashekhar Rao, the Telangana Chief Minister and Telangana Rashtra
Samithi (TRS) for trying to stitch together a non-Congress, non-BJP front and said that they were scheduled to meet recently but this meeting could not happen as he was not available. He said he will soon go and meet Rao in Telangana and discuss the political scenario. Yadav also congratulated the present government in Uttar Pradesh for deciding to install a 25-foot statue of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said that when SP comes to power it will follow suit.
Noida police order to stop offering namaz at park is discriminatory: Mayawati Lucknow (IANS): Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati on Wednesday said that the order by the Noida police barring Muslims from offering namaz at a community park was “discriminatory and irresponsible,” and was aimed at hiding the BJP government’s failures ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In a statement, Mayawati said that if the Yogi Adityanath government has any policy that bars religious gatherings at public spaces, it should be implemented across the state and must be binding on people of all religions. “If namaz was being offered in the said park in Sector 58 since 2013, why is it being stopped now,
just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections? It is but natural to raise questions on the BJP government’s intentions and deem that it is indulging in religious discrimination. “It also gives rise to suspicions that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is creating religious disputes to hide its failures and divert people’s attention. This is condemnable. The BJP has been exposed,” Mayawati said. Her statement comes a
day after the police ordered offices and establishments in Noida to direct their Muslim employees to stop offering Friday prayers in open areas such as parks. The police notice read: “We want to inform you that there is no permission from the administration to conduct any kind of religious activity including offering namaz on Friday in the Authority park in sector 58.” “It is expected of you to inform your Muslim employees to not come to the park to offer namaz. If employees of your company come to the park, it will be assumed that you have not informed your employees and your company will be held liable,” the statement added.

Lok Sabha passes triple talaq bill amidst opposition walkout CPI-M member Mohammed Salim said: “The question is if you want to give justice to Muslim women... You are naming this bill as protection of rights of Muslim women, but there would be no protection of rights of Muslim women because Muslim women are part of the Muslim community.” Prasad said the main objection of opposition was that the bill seeks to criminalise triple talaq and noted that the same House had passed laws with tough provisions to prevent incidence of rape. “When these laws were made, no one said what will happen to the family members of the culprits,” he said. Replying to the debate, Prasad said penal provisions of laws such as dowry prohibition Act and domestic violence Act were applicable to all citizens and no one had any objection. “Why this objection is only for triple talaq. Behind it is political motive of vote bank,” he said, adding that the bill had not been brought to treat any community as a vote bank. He said that 22 Muslim countries had banned
triple talaq or codified it but there was objection to this being done in a secular country like India. The Minister said the Congress had supported the bill when it was passed in the Lok Sabha in 2017 but was now raising objections. Prasad said the government had addressed the concerns of members by bringing a new bill and was still willing to consider constructive suggestions but nothing came. Referring to a media report, he said Pakistan was also considering to criminalize triple talaq. “The whole world is looking at India,” he said. Prasad said the person against whom a complaint was made would get jail term only after a trial and there was provision of settlement in which the magistrate would record statements. “Deterrence is always important. If you commit a crime, you will go to the jail,” he said. Targeting the Congress, he said its government had brought legislation to negate the Shah Bano judgement.
Prasad cited the Supreme Court judgement and rejected opposition’s contention that there was no need for the bill in view of the verdict. He said one of the judges had said that “what is bad in theology, bad in law also” and the judgement also mentioned that a law should be enacted. BJP’s sulking ally Shiv Sena, which vociferously supported the bill, utilised the debate to criticise the government for not being equally pro-active on the issue of Ram temple in Ayodhya. Party member Arvind Sawant said: “If there can be a law for triple talaq, why not bring a bill for Ram temple?” The government fielded ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Smriti Irani, both members of Rajya Sabha, during the debate in which they attacked the Congress. Naqvi likened the practice of triple talaq with long abolished “Sati Pratha”, saying the practice of divorce among Indian Muslims was not related to Islam but was a social evil.
CELEBRATING
OF LEADERSHIP IN TRAVEL (BC) SINCE 1982
New Delhi (IANS): The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a controversial bill that criminalises the practice of triple talaq among Muslims, amidst walkout by the Congress and the BJP ally AIADMK as opposition parties attacked the government saying the measure was aimed at political gains in view of the coming general elections. The bill, which provides for up to three years’ imprisonment for invoking instant divorce by uttering talaq thrice in a single sitting, was passed with 245 in favour and 11 against in a division after rejection of all opposition amendments, after the government turned down demands for referring the bill to a joint select committee for detailed consideration. The Samajwadi Party and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also joined the walk out. Strongly defending the bill after a four-hour discussion that broke the impasse in the House over the Rafale deal and other issues, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the bill should not be looked at from the prism of politics but was meant to ensure gender justice and will have a deterrent effect. “Do not look at it from the prism of politics but from that of humanity. It is aimed at giving justice, respect,” he said. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 replaces an ordinance issued in September after the government failed to get the bill passed in the Rajya Sabha earlier this year. A similar bill was passed by the Lok Sabha in December last year but could not clear the Rajya Sabha where the opposition managed to stall it. The present bill contains safeguards brought in by the government which makes it clear that only the affected woman or her blood relative can file a complaint with police against the husband instead of anyone lodging a complaint as provided in the previous version of the bill. The improved legislation also provides for easier bail conditions and makes the offence compoundable by a magistrate after hearing the wife. The bill will now go to the Rajya Sabha where the government may still find it difficult to push it through. Opposition members, especially the women MPs belonging to the Congress, NCP and other parties, said that the government had brought the bill with political motives and there was no need to criminalise divorce which is a civil wrong and a social issue. AIMIM member Asaduddin Owaisi said while the Supreme Court is decriminalising adultery and same sex relationships, the government was intent on criminalising triple talaq because “you want to send Muslims to jail”. At the same time, he said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was not bothered about social problems faced by Hindu women. Referring to the BJP stand on the Sabarimala verdict, he said while the ruling party opposed it saying it is a matter of faith, the same principle is not applicable to a matter of faith for Muslims. Before leading a walkout of his party ahead of the voting, leader of the Congress group Mallikarjun Kharge said most of the parties -including AIADMK, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and left parties -- have demanded that the bill be sent to a joint select committee and the government should accept it. “It is a divisive bill, against the Constitution and violates Muslim personal laws and the right to equality,” he said. He was followed by the AIADMK whose leader P. Venugopal said his party would also walk out of the House since the government has rejected its demand for a joint select committee. The AIADMK, which has been supporting the government and may even tie up with the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, attacked the bill calling it “unconstitutional”, against “natural justice” and one of the most “barbaric” laws to have ever been introduced against the Muslim community.

Amritsar’s miracle baby boy: Flushed down train toilet, recovered alive Chandigarh (IANS): A baby boy, who was flushed down the toilet of a train in Amritsar but was miraculously recov-

train stopped for cleaning. The baby, who appears to be just one-day-old, was apparently abandoned and flushed down the train toilet. The Government Railway Police (GRP) and authorities in the Punjab city of Amritsar were investigating the matter. CCTV footages at railway stations were being examined to ascertain who was behind the act. The sweepers have told the
GRP that a ‘dupatta’ (traditional stole) was found tied around the neck of the infant prompting suspicion that it was done in order to strangulate it before flushing it down the toilet. However, the baby did not fall from the train toilet. A doctor at the Amritsar hospital on Sunday said the baby, who was found without any clothes and was shivering, was out of danger.
Police officials and doctors said that the infant was lucky to have survived despite being dumped “so mercilessly and left in the winter cold in the toilet flush”. The GRP has registered a case under Indian Penal Code’s Section 317 against unidentified persons for exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it.

New Delhi (IANS): Following apprehension of the revival of the Khalistan movement in Punjab, the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) has been banned under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). In a notification issued on Wednesday, the Ministry banned KLF saying that the “Centre believes KLF is involved in terrorism as it has committed and participated in acts of terrorism in India”.
The Centre’s moves follows the National Investigation Agency (NIA) recommending the ban citing KLF’s involvement in “community-specific targeted killings in Punjab” and carrying out multiple terror attacks in the state between February 2016 and October 2017. The MHA also said that the KLF members India were getting financial and logistical support from their handlers based abroad. The KLF is the 40th organisation to be banned under the UAPA. Among the 39 groups banned earlier include four Sikh extremist groups including Babbar Khalsa International, Khalistan Commando Force, Khalistan Zindabad Force and International Sikh Youth Federation. The KLF came into existence in 1986 with the objective of establishing an independent state of Khalistan by secession of Punjab through violent means. Founded by Aroor Singh, the outfit had been active in promoting secessionist activities till 1994. It was subsequently revived by Harminder Singh Mintoo who died of cardiac arrest in April 2018 in Patiala Central Jail where he was lodged.
Two Akali Dal activists arrested for vandalising Rajiv Gandhi statute Chandigarh (IANS): A day after the vandalizing of the statute of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, two activists of the youth wing of the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have been arrested by the Punjab Police in Ludhiana, police said on Wednesday. Those arrested are Youth Akali Dal activists Meetpal Dugri and Gurdeep Singh Gosha. The SAD on Wednesday strongly opposed their arrest. The statute was vandalised allegedly by workers of the SAD’s youth wing in Salem Tibri area of Ludhiana on Tuesday following which Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh ordered strict action by the district police against the perpetrators. The police had registered a case in this matter. Punjab’s ruling Congress and opposition SAD were on Tuesday involved in a bitter war of words after the statute was vandalised. Congress MP Ravneet Sing Bittu later cleaned the statute with milk. Blaming Rajiv Gandhi and the Congress for the killing of hundreds of Sikhs in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Youth Akali Dal activists used spray paint to blacken the face of Rajiv Gandhi and painted his hands in red colour. The activists then announced that they were doing this (vandalism) to show their anger against the role of Rajiv Gandhi, father of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, in the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi in 1984 in the aftermath of the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two bodyguards. Strongly condemning the vandalism, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday asked SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal to stop indulging in petty politics and asked him to apologise. Sukhbir Badal reacted strongly to Amarinder’s statement. “You @capt_amarinder should apologise to the Sikh sangat for failing them as CM and standing with hated Gandhi family. The community has shown what it thinks of Rajiv Gandhi in Ludhiana. Don’t disrespect the sentiments of Sikhs,” Badal tweeted. Congress Sewa Dal activists later blackened the faces of SAD president Sukhbir Badal and former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on posters in Ludhiana in retaliation against the statute vandalisation. They also burnt posters of both Akali Dal leaders. Punjab has a Congress government since March 2017 headed by Amarinder Singh.

BSF recovers 17 kg heroin, pistol in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector Chandigarh (IANS): In a major haul, the Border Security Force on Sunday recovered 17 kg of heroin, one Pakistan-made pistol and ammunition along the international border with Pakistan in the Ferozepur sector, a BSF spokesman said. The recovery was made following a search carried out in the area of border out post (BoP) Karma in Ferozepur sector, around 300 km from Chandigarh, on Sunday, BSF said. BSF troopers had observed suspicious movement ahead of the border security fence
early on Sunday. However, the troops could not take immediate action due to dense fog in the border belt. The spokesman said the search led to recovery of 17 kg heroin,
one Pakistan-made pistol and one modified weapon, three magazines with 26 rounds of ammunition and a plastic pipe. The recovered heroin is worth over Rs 850 million in the inter-
national market. The BSF has recovered over 221 kg of heroin along the international boundary with Pakistan in 2018. In another incident, the BSF on Thursday recovered 5.6 kg of heroin along the international border with Pakistan in the Amritsar sector, a BSF spokesman said. The recovery was made following a search carried out in the
area of border out post (BoP) Bharopal in Amritsar sector, around 300 km from Chandigarh, on Sunday, BSF said. BSF troopers had observed suspicious movement ahead of the border security fence early on Thursday. However, the troops could not take immediate action due to darkness and dense fog in the border belt. The heroin was packed in 13 packets, the spokesman said.
The recovered heroin is worth over Rs 250 million in the international market. The BSF has recovered nearly 230 kg of heroin along the international boundary with Pakistan in 2018. Punjab shares a 553-km long international border, with a barbed wire fence, with Pakistan.
Punjab Minister warns officials on school results Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Education Minister O.P. Soni on Wednesday warned that officers and principals will be held fully accountable for the poor performance of students in examinations. Presiding over a meeting with the District Education Officers (DEOs), Soni said that DEOs should regularly check schools and punctuality among the teachers and other staff to en-
sure better results. He further said that the examination centre should be set up keeping in mind that students do not have to travel more than three kilometer from their home. Making it clear that the responsibility of poor results of the government schools will be on DEOs and principals, Soni asked them to ensure remedial measures before the start of ex-
aminations of various classes. On the issue of vacant posts of teachers and other employees in various schools, Soni directed that these posts will be filled with due promotions and rationalisation. He also said that the list of those schools, whose buildings are unsafe and in dilapidated condition, should be sent immediately and all such buildings will be rebuilt in one year.

Would be wonderful to work on film for kids: Sonakshi Sinha
New Delhi (IANS): The new year has an exciting and eclectic slate of films lined up for Sonakshi Sinha, who says she would love to work in a movie aimed at entertaining children. “I feel it is very crucial to keep the kids entertained in every household as it keeps them occupied and also aids them in learning new things. I hope to see more films which are made by keeping kids in mind as an audience and more engagement events to be held,” Sonakshi told IANS via email. The actress joined in a bit of kiddie fun in Mumbai earlier this month at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, which will be aired on Nickelodeon on January 6, 2019.
Anything specific that she would like to do in the children’s genre? “I would love to. I do feel I have a very strong connection with kids, could be because we’re on the same wavelength (laughs). “Kids are just drawn to me and I just enjoy being around them, so I feel it would be wonder-
ful if I was able to work on a film that is all out just for kids,” she said. In 2019, Sonakshi has films like “Kalank”, “Mission Dangal” and “Dabangg 3” to look forward to. “I feel blessed that I have such wonderful projects coming my way and it is truly thrilling to work on them. I cannot wait for all of them to hit the theatres,” she said. There is also news that she may be seen in Nikkhil Advani’s “Snow”. But Sonakshi steered clear of confirming. “The best people to give out any details of a film are either the producer or the director. I prefer not to speak about any films until I’ve actually signed on the dotted line,” she said.

Zero is Shah Rukh Khan’s career best - Review
When this achingly irreverent ode to misfits was over, I thought, how wonderful that “Zero” is dedicated to Sridevi. No more befitting homage could be paid to an entertainer who brought us smiles all through her career. Bauua Singh of Meerut is like that only. He is a dwarf, and let’s not soften the blow by beating around the bush about his shortcoming. The brilliantly askew screenplay by Himanshu Sharma certainly does not shy away from addressing disabilities. This is a film that calls a spade a spade and then shovels us a welter of speckled wisdom that I last saw in “Forrest Gump”. “Zero” is like a box of assorted chocolates. You never know what the feeling would be in the next one. Indeed Tom Hanks from “Forrest Gump” would have chuckled approvingly at the insolent antics of Bauua Singh and his pal Guddu Singh (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, torch in hand, hair dyed blonde) as they turn the crowded city of Meerat into their personal arena of gratification. The film opens with a wacky sambar-western dream sequence where we see a ‘normal’ Shah Rukh Khan taking on his worst enemy in the world his father(Tigmanshu Dhulia, doing a Sudhir Pandey) whose shrunken scrotum the dwarf hero openly blames for his shortcomings. Mom Sheebha Chadha is too jaded to be embarrassed. This is the only time Shah Rukh stands at his actual height in the film. It reminded me of that one time in “Koyla” when the ‘mute’ Shah Rukh Khan spoke up in a dream sequence because the distributors and exhibitors wanted a ‘normal’ Shah Rukh to speak up. Ask Bauua Singh if he cares. “Zero” is a film that doesn’t believe in numbers. In no time at all we lose count of the number of times we loath Bauua’s self-obsession and then fall in love with his character again for doing something unexpected that nobody believes he could. Like that kiss which the super-hot Babita Kumari smacks on his wet lips. Or for that matter, like this completely unexpected film from a superstar who spent all his life playing only one role and has now discovered the freedom of exploring people who are flawed fractured and therefore simply fabulous. Oh, I forgot! What is “Zero” about? Well, it is about three fractured lives , people who don’t feel sorry for their deficiencies and are never threatened to fall apart because there is really nowhere to go once you hit zero. Rather, they pity those who waste time pitying them. Bauaa Singh in pursuit of a life partner courts and wins and loses the cerebral palsy inflicted space scientist Afia (Anushka Sharma, in an embarrassingly artificial performance) because well, he has the hots for screen-queen Babita Kumari. As Babita, Katrina Kaif just tears the screen apart. Now where did that come from? Kaif is so stunning in her role as a dumped alcoholic actress, she gave me goosebumps every time her kohl-laden eyes swelled up with unshed tears. In one of the film’s most enchanting episodes she drags Bauaa out of her party and then drags herself out of a relationship that has her chained to misery. In another episode of magical misgivings Bauua woos Afia in the corridor of a posh hotel with the the colours of Holi, a symphonic orchestra and little girls creating a cascade of chorus rhapsodies that only a Bauua Singh could conceive. The mesmeric moments end abruptly with
the hotel manager complaining about the mess on his premise. Bathos, a word I am sure Bauua doesn’t know, rules his life. To no one’s surprise he decides to chase his lost love all the way to the US, becomes an astronaut and replaces the moody monkey that was supposed to fly to Mars. Why would BauuaA want to be expelled to outerspace? Good question. He has a very special affinity with the stars, the ones and above. And when the stars on earth mock him for his overweening ambitions his ego, much larger than his physical stature, revolts. There are many passages of lyrical beauty in this gem of a film, passages that may pass you by like ships sailing in the night, if you aren’t vigilant. Because, really, Bauaa, doesn’t care if you are watching or not. “Zero” is a film made out of the impulse to woo whimsy without getting anxious over the audiences’ attention. Not all of it coheres, many sequences stand apart in stubborn isolation, and Anushka’s performance
brings the narrative down considerably. But finally “Zero” works. It celebrates incompleteness as no other movie in any language has ever done. Like
the film, Bauaa Singh isn’t afraid to fail. He has the great immortal Sridevi telling him it’s okay to fail. I couldn’t ask for more. Can you?

Vice (PG) ***
Power Play!
Say the word vice and nine out of ten people would think you mean something sleazy and related to sex, drugs or rock and roll. It vice also has other meanings. Here it refers to some sleazy state of politics wherever you look presided over by the number two person in public office - the Vice President . Prepare to be swept away by the power and corruption wielded by o e ultra savvy operator in The eventful Vice. Here EOne Entertainment unleashes some heavyweight actors who bring to life a larger than life character in A rather unwieldy life in America. Mobilize and join the movement at Cineplex Cinemas across B.C. Power is

what it’s all about. At least in politics. This very timely movie offers a glimpse into the power politics reminiscent of the Bush era. Man of the hour in this quest for power is Dick Cheney. Consummate actor Christian Bale ( Batman) gives a banner performance as the Wyoming native who rose from obscurity to the highest seats of power in Washington. Consider this life long Republican to be the ultimate insider. With a crackerjack cast including Amy Adams as the Mrs. and Steve Carell (Get Smart) as the likable yet scheming Donald Rumsfeld Vice is a play by play peek
into the machinations of a ruthless ambitious loner who somehow rose fro obscurity to the ultimate seat of power. Include the always entertaining Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush and you have a wonderful take on the Presidency and the pretenders to the throne. Insightful, , honest and laced with ironic humour Vice is must see entertainment for political junkies and those into exciting performances. Be sure to stick around for the end credits which further adds fuel to the fire of a nation with some pretty drastic opposing views,

2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2: Mid-Size Truck is a Jack of All trades!
By Autoreviewman At the time of writing Chevrolet Canada offered a choice of no less than eight different models of its award winning mid-size Colorado pickup, equipped with various appearance packages. The Colorado is also available in either rear- or four-wheel drive, depending on model, with a choice of engines. Our test ZR2 is the special Off Road model. Powered by the 3.6 liter V6, offering best in class horsepower 308 hp with best in class and Torque 275 lb.-ft. The ZR2 has some serious off-road credentials in the form of: Multimatic’s Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers, with a 2-inch suspension lift and 3.5-inch-wider track, for both off-road rock crawling, and improved ride quality and performance on road. There is also a locking rear differential, a segment-exclusive locking front differential, more robustly engineered rear axle and front control arms, rock sliders, aluminum skid plates on the radiator, engine oil pan, and transfer case, and new aggressive looking front and rear bumpers designed for better approach and departure angles off road.
Finally the 17-inch wheels are fitted with high performance 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires. You also gain a cool, black contrasting power bulge and exterior graphics The ZR2’s interior featured a large, neat, well apportioned cabin with big, comfortable seats. Everything seems well-built and of good quality. On the road performance is good, The V6-powered ZR2 delivers decent enough grunt, with plenty of acceleration and torque. The ZR2’ suspension is superb in my opinion the DSSV dampers have magical ability to offer good, steady ride on paved streets without the jumpiness and body roll you would associate with lift kit and long travel shocks. They provide a largely comfortable, forgiving ride. The steering is good, light, and dead on center steering. We took the ZR2 to the wilds of Abbotsford, to a rough trail area where Colorado ZR2 performed very well, if not exceptionally thanks to its professional grade off- road hardware and suspension. With its controllable low end low-end torque, responsive four-wheel drive and the hyper aggressive tread on the Goodyear Duratrac tires, it made light work of the trails with ease. Nothing much to complain about. Overall, the Colorado is a very capable work, play and family vehicle, and the ZR2 is cream of the crop in this lineup. Highly recommended 2019 Chevrolet Colorado: Base priced from $23,000 - $38,000, Colorado ZR2 model priced from: $47,000 Website www.gm.ca

Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupe: 503 Horsepower is yours!
By Autoreviewman The awesome looking 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe is a hulking four-door crossover coupe that will scare all cars with its brutish good looks. This thing just oozes power and automotive thuggery with its dark, sinister demeanour. The fastback profile, smoked rims, tail spoiler and the AMG GT inspired Panamericana grille a rare, vertical-bar design, embossed with Mercedes’ large 3-pointed, star is backed up with the
numbers: How does a 4.0 litre V8 engine putting out 469-503-horsepower with a lethal 479-516-lbft torque sound? Oh, and by the way, it’s an AMG tuned vehicle, so the twin-turbo DOHC 32-valve V-8 is hand assembled by a single highly qualified AMG engineer who signs the engine cover with his name for the ultimate seal of approval. The transmission is a 9-speed automatic that can aid the 0-100 km/h sprint of about four seconds on to a limited 250 km/h top speed (280 if you opt for the AMG Driver’s Package). Meanwhile, the top AMG 63 S with the twin-turbo V-8 tuned to produce 503 hp and 516 lb-ft torque. The interior is equally stunning, our tester was equipped with the “Edition 1” option package with such goodies as diamond stitching on the superb bucket seats, raised yellow stitching everywhere – on the seats, dash, doors and armrests There are wonderful high- end touches, metal Burmester speaker grilles, lots of metal, alloy de-
tails and AMG Carbon Fibre trim. The instrument gauges have illuminated red indicators. And there is also an 8.4-in COMAND screen operated by a touchpad and central controller. Ergonomics are just excellent and the high tall seating position gives a feeling of command and security. The rear cabin is also luxurious with heated seats, separate heating control and ample room in all directions. On the road, the GLC 63 has superlative performance. Not only is the V8 an audio sensory delight, with its urgent grumbling note. Acceleration is terrifyingly fast, and the availability of 500 horsepower makes itself known whenever the
gas pedal is judiciously stamped upon. To sum up there is just nothing negative about the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupe. It’s just a fantastic pleasure to drive and own if you are lucky. At this level of engineering, performance and luxury, we mere mortals must bow down! Expensive, rare, over the top, maddeningly desirable and superb in every way! Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupe: Base priced from: MSRP: $91,500. Price as tested with options: $112,740 Website www.mercedes-benz.ca
2019 Kia Soul Turbo: Family Hatchback Continues to Impress
By Autoreviewman The funky looking Kia Soul hatchback has been wildly successful in Canada, shifting some 90,000 units since its introduction in 2009. The unique, tall, boxy profile, steep vertical rear and sharp side profile still look good, years after its introduction. Kia have very carefully updated, refined and improved the original clever design, but still retained its original endearing, cheeky character, and versatile interior. The Soul continues to offer superb value for money. The 2019 Kia Soul is available in a range of trim levels: base, LX, EX and EX+. Premium, EX Tech, and SX Turbo. The Soul Turbo as tested is powered by: a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (201 hp, 195 lb-ft), teamed with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission: larger wheels, upgraded exterior trim upgraded gauges and interior trim, a mix of cloth and leather seat upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and keyless ignition. In terms of safety: Lane departure and blind-spot warning systems, are available on higher models bundled with adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking system. You sit taller in the Soul than in a car, and gain great road visibility. The large windows, high roof, and optional panoramic sunroof also en-
hances the sense of light and space. I like the dash with its easy to use primary controls that are logically placed. Kia ‘s optional Uvo3 touchscreen interface, not only looks good, it responds to command quickly, and is easy to use, with access to features such as; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The rear seats are especially roomy, with the easy exit/ingress, and plenty of headand legroom for taller passengers. The trunk offers 532 litres of cargo volume with rear seats up and 1,402 litres with split-folding rear seat folded down. A low rear loading sill and the light easy to lift rear hatch, are advantages. On the road, the turbo engine makes big difference to the Kia Soul’s performance. Off the line acceleration is quick, the turbo spools up quickly with little lag, adding some spice to the Soul’s perkiness. The steering feels good and is well weighted, The turbo delivers 9.1/7/7 city/highway (L/100km) fuel economy. Much to recommend in the Kia Soul. Arrives very well equipped. Even the full loaded higher trim models don’t break $$27.000. So its bargain no matter which model you buy. Fantastic value for money, and comes highly recommended. 2019 Kia Soul Base priced from $20,095 - $26,095 Kia SX Turbo Price as tested: $26,095 More info at www.kia.ca
