AAP sweeps Delhi polls with 62 seats, BJP falls way behind

New Delhi (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party swept the Delhi Assembly polls with 62 seats, five less than in 2015, according to the final results announced by the Election Commission on Tuesday night. The opposition BJP got eight seats — up from three in 2015, while the Congress remained at zero. The victory of the AAP ensured a hat trick for its national convener Arvind Kejriwal in the office of Delhi Chief Minister. All the Kejriwal government ministers retained their seats with a decent margin, though Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia saw a see-saw battle before he was declared winner from his Patparganj seat in east Delhi. Kejriwal is the second person after Congress leader Sheila Dikshit to become the Chief Minister of the city for the third time. The AAP had won 67 of the 70 Assembly seats in 2015, barring Rohini, Vishwas Nagar and Mustafabad which had gone to the BJP.

This time, the BJP lost Mustafabad but retained Rohini and Vishwas Nagar, and also went on to win Gandhi Nagar, Ghonda, Karawal Nagar, Laxmi Nagar and Rohtas Nagar and Badarpur. The Congress drew a blank again, and also saw its vote share go down from that in 2015. The vote share of AAP also declined from 54.34 per cent in 2015 to 53.6 per cent, while the BJP’s vote share has increased from

32.19 per cent in 2015 to 38.5 per cent. The vote share of the Congress dropped to 4.26 per cent this time from 2015’s 9.65 per cent. Also, the voter turnout of the city was about five per cent less from that in 2015. In the 2013 Assembly polls, while the Congress had secured a vote share of 24.55 per cent, the BJP had secured 33.07 per cent vote share and the AAP, which was contesting for the first time, had secured 29.49

New Delhi / Washington (IANS): US President Donald Trump will get a red carpet welcome in Gujarat later this month -- on a grander scale than the event organized for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Houston, Texas, last year. Sources said the government is organizing ‘Kem Chho, Trump’, the Gujarati equivalent of Texas event ‘Howdy Modi’ in Prime Minister’s home state, Gujarat for Trump and his wife Melania. In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi hinted at the ongoing preparations for President Trump’s two-day visit on February 24. “Extremely delighted that

POTUS Donald Trump and First Lady will visit India on 24th and 25th February. India will accord a memorable welcome to our esteemed guests. This visit is a very special one and it will go a long way in further cementing India-US friendship,” Modi tweeted. Recalling that “India and USA share a common commitment to democracy and pluralism”, Modi said, “Our nations are cooperating extensively on a wide range of issues. Robust friendship between our nations augurs well not only for our citizens but also for the entire world.” Trump at a press conference

in Washington DC on Tuesday revealed that Modi has organized a grand welcome for him in Ahmedabad. “He (PM Modi) said we will have millions and millions of people. My only problem is that last night we probably had 40 or 50,000 people... I’m not going to feel so good... There will be five to seven million people just from the airport to the new stadium (in Ahmedabad),” he quipped. Among world leaders, Trump and Modi, share a very good rapport with each other. Sources said Trump and Modi will do a roadshow from the Ahmedabad airport and visit

per cent. The AAP and the Congress joined hands to form Arvind Kejriwal’s 49day government. The Aam Aadmi Party had changed the political picture of Delhi since its formation in 2012. While the assembly polls before 2012 were between the Congress and the BJP, the assembly elections since 2013 had been all about AAP in Delhi. The BJP got its highest vote share in the first-ever Delhi Assembly polls in 1993 — 42.82 per cent votes — and had formed a government. The vote share of Congress was 34.48 per cent during that time. Later, between 1998 and 2008, the Congress was elected having more than 40 per cent vote share. While the BJP’s vote share in 1998, 2003 and 2008 was 34.02 per cent, 35.22 per cent and 36.33 per cent, that of Congress was 47.76 per cent, 48.13 per cent and 40.30 per cent, respectively. Indian government plans massive ‘Kem Chho, Trump’ welcome

Sabarmati Ashram to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Later, Trump will inaugurate Ahmedabad’s newlyconstructed Sardar Patel Stadium with a seating capacity of over 100,000 people. The welcome ‘Kem Chho, Trump’ to the US President will be accorded at the stadium. Trump is likely to sign a limited trade deal with Modi, ahead of the US Presidential elections later this year. He hopes to draw votes from the Indian diaspora in the US along with his core constituency to which he promised in the last elections that he will secure better terms for trade from America’s key trading partners.

BJP’s ‘muscular nationalism’ falls flat in state after state New Delhi (IANS): “It’s a fight between India and Pakistan”, “AAP is feeding Biryani to Shaheen Bagh protestors” or “They will rape our daughters” are some awful specimens of the campaign that Delhi had to withstand this election season. While Shaheen Bagh has been a relatively new issue, the nation has been bombarded with an overdose of Balakot, Article 35A, Kashmir and Pakistan since April-May, 2019. When BJP lost Delhi on February 11, these issues also outlived their limit to be used as electoral props, as state after state polls have shown. First it was Maharashtra and Haryana, followed by Jharkhand and now Delhi, which is at best an over-hyped municipal election — these issues seemed like a recurrent set of ideas that BJP wants state populace to vote them in for without being concerned about the basics like water supply, transportation or drainage system. The net result has been not surprising — three losses and barely making it to Haryana with ‘help’ from Independents and poll rival JJP. The only surprise in all these serial losses in states in spite of a stupendous comeback at Centre with 303 Lok Sabha seats is that it’s all but BJP who fails to see the non-relevance of such issues in a state election. Muscular nationalism and majoritarian identity are two things in which no political party can beat the BJP. It’s their strength. But it’s also their weakness since their leaders can’t speak at length on anything beyond these two issues. Take the Delhi election, for example. In the Ram Lila

which had an added entry in form of Shaheen Bagh, by the time the BJP went on to campaign in Delhi. In Jharkhand, people were angry at Chief Minister Raghubar Das’s handling of tribal issues but BJP spoke of Pakistan. In Maharashtra’s Vidarbha, people wanted to hear about drought palliative measures but heard about something else that they

were least concerned about. Khattar went on an Article 370 spree as the Haryanvi girls demanded the head of the state speak on women’s security. Needless to say, even today, the approval ratings of Modi are the highest across India. But people don’t want the BJP in state after state it seems given how convinced they are that the saffron party is inept

to deal with trivial issues like irrigation, electricity, drainage, urban poverty and the education system. Unless BJP proves them wrong by speaking state-specific issues in the states, BJP may continue to lose in Bihar and Bengal as well – the next to go for Assembly polls in this year and the next, respectively.

Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Maidan rally which was used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to kick start the Delhi campaign, he started with the issue of regularizing 1,700 unauthorized colonies and meeting some of the beneficiaries on the stage. But within minutes, he ventured towards the Citizenship Amendment Act, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, etc. One would understand that Modi used that platform to “dispel myths” about CAA, as many in BJP argue. But what explains the stress with which he underlined Shaheen Bagh at the Karkardooma rally, this February? He called the blockade an “experiment”. Let’s rewind time to make the argument more believable on BJP’s “suicide tendency” in states. Five days after Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah axed Article 370 that gave special powers to Kashmir, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar raised Kashmir at a rally. He said, “Earlier Haryana was infamous for female infanticide, but after the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Abhiyan, the sex ratio has gone up from 850 to 933 girls per 1,000 boys. Our minister O.P. Dhankad had said that we’ll need to bring daughters-in-law from Bihar.

Now some people are saying Kashmir has been opened, we can bring girls from Kashmir also. Jokes apart, if [sex] ratio is fine, then there will be balance in society.” The controversy his statement created aside, Haryanvis were looking forward to listening about jobs which he didn’t speak much about. In Maharashtra during the election campaign in October last year, UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was giving a speech at Thane. Getting excited and venturing to ultra-muscular nationalism, that is BJP’s safe play zone, Maurya said, “By pressing the lotus button (BJP’s poll symbol), not only Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Narendra Mehta will be benefited, but it will mean that a nuclear bomb will by itself get dropped on Pakistan.” Terming the votes as something that will determine love for India, he added: “These will be the first elections to be held in the country after the scrapping of Article 370, hence have immense importance. The results of these polls will reveal people’s ‘rashtra bhakti’ (patriotism).” The rants are endless that went on in Jharkhand as well

Lashkar founder Hafiz Saeed sent to jail for five years New Delhi / Islamabad (IANS): Just ahead of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) review, founder and patron of the banned terror outfit Lashkare-Taiba, Hafiz Saeed, was convicted in terror funding cases and sent to jail for five-and-ahalf years by a Pakistani court on Wednesday. Sources in Pakistan said the mastermind of Mumbai terror

attacks was sentenced to fiveand-a-half years and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 in each of the two cases related to terror funding. However, the jail terms in both cases will run concurrently, the Lahore antiterrorism court said. The sentence was announced in front of Saeed in the courtroom by Judge Arshad Hussain Bhatta. The Jamaat-ud-

Dawa (JuD) chief Saeed was found guilty of “being part of a banned terrorist outfit” and for “having illegal property”, his lawyer Imran Gill said. The JuD was financing terror by raising funds through non-profit organisations and trusts including Al-Anfaal Trust, Dawatul Irshad Trust, Muaz Bin Jabal Trust and others. Banned by the United Nations

Security Council (UNSC) after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Saeed faces 23 terror cases in Pakistan alone. Even as he was put under house arrest a few times due to international pressure and India’s repeated lament, Saeed continued to enjoy his freedom and even held public rallies against India. Pakistan filed charges against him only after FATF, a global

watchdog for terror funding and money laundering put the country under ‘grey list’. The grey and black listing at FATF has adverse consequences for Pakistan’s international trade and investment. Pakistan expects to get off the grey list by showing compliance to the FATF conditions for curbing terror funding, later this week.

Several ex-Indian cricketers could be in trouble as top bookie Chawla extradited from London New Delhi ( IANS): Several Indian cricket stars of yesteryears could be in trouble as Delhi Police extradites Sanjeev Chawla, the alleged mastermind of match-fixing case involving former South African captain late Hansie Cronje, from London on Thursday. Chawla, a British national as per Delhi Police charge sheet, who was absconding in the match fixing case, was linked with several international cricketers, including Indian players, sources in the crime branch of the Delhi Police revealed. The dossier prepared on Chawla by Crime Branch reveals that several Indian cricketers were frequenting his bungalow, 4, Monk Ville Avenue, London, and their phone numbers figured on Chawla’s phone list in Call Data Records (CDRs) recovered by police for the period of January to March 2000. It was during period this period (FebruaryMarch 2000) when conspiracy to fix matches was unearthed during India-South Africa series played in India. “As Chawla had slipped to London, he could not be interrogated and subsequently the CDRs connecting the then Indian cricketers with the global bookie was not pursued,” a former commissioner of Delhi Police told IANS. Crime Branch has also gathered documents from Scotland Yard, whose sleuths arrested Chawla in 2001 in another betting scandal involving English players. On the basis of a statement of former England all-rounder Chris Lewis who alleged that

Chawla had offered bribe to the thenEngland Captain Alec Stewart to underperform in matches, Scotland Yard questioned Chawla and a prominent Indian sports promoter. During investigation it was revealed that several players from India, Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa were in touch with Chawla and many visited the bookie’s restaurant, East is East, located at 230, Commercial Road, London. Regarding Chawla’s relations with Dubaibased betting syndicates, former Delhi Police commissioner Ajay Raj Sharma said a UAE number, used by a member of the underworld was initially traced by the Delhi police; however, Chawla’s links with underworld will be probed once he is interrogated in police custody. The Delhi Police charge sheet reveals that the phone number of Krishna Kumar (of TSeries music group), one of the associates of Sanjeev Chawla, was directly linked with a phone number of Saheen Haithley, an alleged member of the underworld operating from Dubai in early 2000. “I am eagerly awaiting the outcome of questioning of Chawla, the mastermind of match-fixing case who paid huge amounts to several cricketers to change results of important international matches. His interrogation will unravel more scandals of the past,” said Ajay Raj Sharma, former Indian Police Service officer who headed Delhi Police when match-fixing case rocked the cricketing fraternity across the globe.

Came to Pakistan in individual capacity, says Indian kabaddi coach Chandigarh (IANS): As the row over the visit of a kabbadi team, hailing mainly from Punjab, to Pakistan to participate in a tournament without the consent of the Indian government refuses to die down, questions are raised as to how a 60-member contingent was allowed to participate in the tournament. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was left shellshocked after a kabaddi team from India landed in Pakistan via Wagah border to take part in the so called ‘World Championship’. IOA chief Narinder Batra told IANS that the team, which reached Lahore on Saturday, was not an official squad from the country and hence they can’t use the word “India under their banner, as they have not been approved by the Amateur Kabbadi Federation of India (AKFI). Even the World Kabaddi Federation said that the ‘World Championship’ in Pakistan was “unauthorised and “no institution will officially recognise the certificates issued by it. How did the team then land up in Pakistan at a time when ties between the two neigh-

bouring countries are at their lowest in recent times? Some experts here feel that most of the Indian players can play for those countries which have Indian origin players in majority. However, the coach of the Indian kabbadi team has clarified that the players have gone to participate in the meet in their individual capacity, and they have nothing to do with the Punjab Kabaddi Association (PKA). “Twelve players are required to form a kabaddi team. So how could a 60-member contingent obtain the permission to travel to Pakistan and take part in a tournament, asked a former PKA functionary requesting anonymity. According to the PKA functionary, it is the prize money of the tournament -- Rs 10 million for winners and Rs 7.5 million for the runners-up -- that has lured the Indian players. Even Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has clarified that no Indian player was given permission to travel to Pakistan to participate in the event. Coach Harpreet Singh Baba, who is accompanying the team, said the team got the invite to take part in the tour-

nament at an individual level. “Like earlier occasions, we came here this time to participate in the tournament. Since we all are here in an individual capacity, the approval of the Ministry of External Affairs or the Indian Olympic Association was not required, Baba told IANS over phone. He said that each player had applied for visa individually and procured it. “We are all citizens of India and procured visa on the basis of taking part in the World Cup which will see the participation of 10 countries. And this is not the first time that we came here. In fact, we are frequently travelling to Britain and Canada in individual capacity to participate in different tournaments, said a player, who didn’t wish to be identified. “If we were of doubtful integrity, the Indian immigration authorities wouldn’t have allowed us. We told them that we are going to participate in the World Cup, he added. Asked how they could use jerseys with the word India inscribed on it, Baba said that since it was a World Cup, the organisers named the team India. However, such claims don’t

seem to hold much ground since the world kabaddi body has categorically stated that the said tournament -- a ‘World Cup’ -- was unauthorised. “Also if there was any objection from the Ministry of External Affairs or the Sports Ministry, they should have barred us from coming here, Baba added. On his part, PKA Vice President

Tejinder Singh Middukhera said that the Pakistan Kabaddi Federation has organised the tournament to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. “The Pakistan Kabaddi Federation had invited the players individually for participation. We have not issued any official letter to any player. Since they all went there in their individu-

al capacity, and not representing the country, the question of seeking permission doesn’t arise, Middukhera said. He said as per his knowledge, the host federation is recognised by the Pakistan government. However, there seem to be more questions than answers over the Indian contingent’s Pakistan trip.

AAP looks forward to positive relations with BJP New Delhi (IANS): After a rough five years in office with the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is hoping for fruitful relations with the BJP. While the BJP was the main opposition to the AAP, party chief Arvind Kejriwal didn’t say a word against the BJP or the Centre in his victory speech. Instead, he later tweeted: “I look forward to working closely with the Centre to make our capital city into a truly world class city. Speaking to IANS, a senior AAP leader said the BJP was an opposition for the Assembly

elections, “but for Delhi, we have to work together at the city level. Also, we will need cooperation of the Centre to work in the city. It’s also important as around half of the AAP’s manifesto promises can’t be fulfilled without the Centre’s support. Of the 28-point manifesto, 12 announcements will need the cooperation and coordination with the Centre for implementation. In nine of its promises, the AAP worded the manifesto to say it will put “pressure on the Centre to “pursue it.

Punjab bans ‘Shooter’ film; case registered against producer Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Sunday registered a case against producer / promoter KV Singh Dhillon and others for allegedly promoting violence, heinous crimes, gangsterism, drugs extortion, threats and criminal intimidation, the Tribune newspaper reported. Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had earlier ordered a ban on the movie ‘Shooter’, which is based on

the life and crimes of notorious gangster Sukha Kahlwan, Punjab Police on Sunday. Kahlwan used to describe himself as a “sharpshooter” and was allegedly involved in more than 20 cases, including murder, kidnapping and extortion. He was shot dead by gangster Vicky Gounder and his accomplices on January 22, 2015, while he was being brought back to Patiala Jail after a

court hearing in Jalandhar. The charge said the movie ‘Shooter’ is likely to instigate youngsters to take up arms, and disturb peace and harmony. The case came after the chief minister directed DirectorGeneral of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta to look into the possible action that could be initiated against KV Singh Dhillon, who had reportedly promised in writing, back in 2019, that he

The Tribune newspaper noted that just a few days ago the Mansa Police had registered a case against Punjabi singers Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu (Sidhu Moosewala) and Mankirat Aulakh for propagating violence and crime through a video clip uploaded on social media. The producer had written to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Mohali after police received a complaint about the movie that “since you are of the opinion that the content of the film may hurt law and order situation, I am discontinuing the film project.” But the producers evidently went ahead with the film, which was now scheduled for release on February 21 under the new title, according to the DGP. Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan’s National Assembly was informed that a proposal for allowing passport-free entry for Sikh pilgrims to the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur was under consideration, in order to attract more visitors, it was reported on Saturday. During Question Hour on Friday, Interior Minister Ijaz Shah said that at present, passport-free entry of Indian pilgrims to Kartarpur was not allowed in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two neighbouring countries, The Express Tribune reported. However, he added, a proposal for entry without passport, in order to attract more visitors, was under consideration, for which detailed input might be sought from the Foreign Affairs Ministry. “As per the procedure, pilgrims can visit the corridor from dawn till dusk after producing Indian passport or overseas citizen of Indian-origin

card along with the passport of resident country,” Shah said. He added that the movement of Indian visitors was regulated through a combination of physical and electronic security systems by the Pakistan Rangers (Punjab) along with other lawenforcement agencies. “Visitors are strictly kept inside the Gurdwara complex by using turnstile gates to avoid their exit toward the Pakistani side,” he said. “All the activities in and around the corridor are monitored through surveillance cameras.” The Kartarpur Corridor, which opened last November to connect the Indian border with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, 4.7 km inside Pakistan, allows Sikh pilgrims to travel there without a visa and return on the same day. Guru Nanak Dev established the first Sikh community in Kartarpur in 1504 on the banks of the River Ravi.

Madhuri Dixit: I want my sons to follow their passion

Mumbai (IANS): Actress Madhuri Dixit-Nene wants her teenage sons to follow their passion. She adds that if a person converts his passion into his job, then he doesn’t look at it as work and it give him joy. Madhuri has two teenage sons named Arin Nene and Raayan Nene and, on what kind of film launch she was expecting for her sons, she said: “I don’t know whether they want to get launched. I don’t want to force them. I don’t know what they are going to do. I feel kids should follow their passion because once you are passionate about something, you never feel that you are going to work, because every day will be a pleasure to get up and do something. So, I expect that from both of them.” The actress was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of “Guns Of

Banaras”, along with film’s cast comprising Karann Nathh, Nathalia Kaur, Ganesh Venkatram, and the film’s director Shekkhar Suri, producers Ashok Nath, Shaina Nath and Rakesh Nath, music director Sohail Sen and stunt director Sham Kaushal on Thursday in Mumbai. On her Valentine’s Day plans, she said, “For us, everyday is Valentine’s Day. We don’t wait for that one specific day. Every day, we are doing things for each other. On this day, people exchange cards and roses, so it’s a just a day to celebrate any kind of love. It can be towards yours parents as well. I always tell my kids that every day should be a Mother and a Father Day. For me, it’s the same as well, be it for my mother and father or for my mother-inlaw and father-in-law.” Madhuri has romanced many actors on the screen. So, how romantic her hus-

band Dr. Sriram Nene? “He is very romantic! The happiness you see on my face is all because of that,” she laughed. Rakesh Nath, who is a co-producer of “Guns Of Banaras” and also the father of the film’s hero Karann Nathh, worked as Madhuri’s manager in her heydays, which explained why she attended the trailer launch. Karann Nathh first faced the camera as a child artiste in Mr India (1987). He made his debut as a Bollywood hero in the 2001 film “Paagalpan” (2001), and thereafter worked in films such as “Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa” (2002), “Sssshhh...” (2003), “LOC Kargil” (2003) and “Tum: A Dangerous Obsession” (2004). “Guns Of Banaras”, scheduled to release on February 28, will mark his return as a Bollywood hero almost 16 years after his last release.

Mumbai (IANS): Actor Saif Ali Khan and actress Kareena Kapoor are now happily married, but it was actress Rani Mukerji who played an important role during their dating days. Saif and Rani have worked together in films such as “Ta Ra Rum Pum” and “Hum Tum”. Off-screen, she had some good advice for Saif. Saif recollected an instance from the days when he was dating Kareena. He said that when they had just started dating, he had never been out with a working actress before. “Rani Mukerji told me once -- just behave like you are in a relationship with a man. Where she meant is, ‘don’t get into the gender of it. Treat it like an equal. Two heroes

in the house. Two people working and you will not have any problems’,” he recalled. Saif gave an insight into the couple’s chemistry during 104.8 Ishq’s “What Women Want 2” hosted by Kareena. They also shared with the listeners on how the roles are defined in their marriage in terms of re-

sponsibilities.0 They joked about how Kareena does the work of organising holidays while Saif would just chill. In agreement, Saif said to Kareena: “Generally, you are quite organised. Your time management is amazing and I really respect that. So, I always leave it to you.”

Top 3 Challenges in Motorcycle Accident Claims BY ADAM UELAND Simpson, Thomas & Associates AN ICBC personal injury claim arising from a motorcycle accident presents unique challenges that can make the claim more complex. We’ve put together the top three challenges faced in motorcycle accident claims. 1. Severity of Injuries Motorcyclists often sustain severe, lifechanging injuries when a crash occurs. Compared to an occupant of a car or truck who is protected by the vehicle frame, seatbelt, and airbags, a motorcyclist is much more vulnerable to serious injury due to the lack of protection offered by a motorcycle and the risk of being thrown from the bike as a result of the crash. While motorcycle helmets

and other safety gear can help minimize the risk of serious injuries such as concussions or brain injuries, chance of serious personal injury or death can never be eliminated. In addition, there is a significant risk that a motorcyclist will sustain harm to other parts of their body, such as fractured bones, permanent scarring to the arms and legs, damage to the internal organs, or spinal cord injuries. 2. Liability Disputes and Bias Against Motorcyclists Motorcycle accident injuries are often extremely serious, which means that the ultimate payout for the ICBC injury claim can be substantial. ICBC will fight hard to try to minimize the compensation it has to pay to the accident victim. One of the ways it will attempt to do so is by disputing liability for

dependent witnesses or an accident reconstruction expert to establish the cause of the crash.

the crash. ICBC will allege that the motorcyclist was at fault and the actions of the motorcyclist will be scrutinized to determine if he or she caused or contributed to the accident in any way. The majority of people have never operated a motorcycle and many people make false assumptions about motorcyclists. People are often influenced by negative stereotypes (e.g., that motorcyclists are reckless or take risks such as weaving through traffic or exceeding the speed limit). The truth of the matter is that accidents are often caused by inattentive or careless car or truck drivers who fail to check blind spots for motorcycles or who turn in front of motorcycles without signalling. Many motorcyclists are injured by other drivers who attempt to share the lane with a motorcycle or who misjudge the speed or distance of a motorcycle. When ICBC denies liability, it is often necessary to gather evidence from in-

3. Allegations of Contributory Negligence Another way that ICBC will attempt to minimize the compensation it has to pay is by raising the defence of “contributory negligence against the injured motorcyclist. At its essence, this is an allegation that the motorcyclist contributed to their own injuries by failing to take reasonable precautions for their own safety. For example, if the motorcyclist sustained a head injury, concussion or brain injury as a result of a crash, ICBC may allege that the injured rider failed to wear a proper safety helmet and as a result contributed to their own injuries. It is important to understand that the defence is fact-specific, and ICBC must prove its allegation that the motorcyclist could have avoided or lessened their injuries. ICBC will likely need to obtain expert engineer or medical evidence to prove the defence. Motorcycle accident claims can be complex. If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident in BC, you should get legal advice from an ICBC claim lawyer who understands the complexities and who has experience with handling the unique challenges of a motorcycle accident personal injury case. We have offices in Vancouver, Burnaby, Abbotsford, and Surrey. Our experienced ICBC claim lawyers can help you overcome any challenging aspects of your ICBC claim and fight to secure the compensation you deserve. The Assistant (PG) ** Girl Friday !

Today we live in the world of Black Lives Matter and the Me Too. Movements. Social causes and so-called injustices seem to be springing up all over. Even here in B.C. we are not immune from perceived social justice issues on a multitude of fronts. Despite the success of break-out movie Parasite at the just completed Academy Awards there still is a lot of work for those maligned and ignored folks on the fringes. Explorethe world of being left out in the cold as a whistleblower takes on the system in The Assistant. Despite it’s low budget good acting and a realistic tone turns this ninety minute drama into a force to be reckoned with. Find this purposeful film from levelFilm playing at Cineplex International Village Cinemas and other select theatres around B.C. Be careful what you wish for. All relatively new employee Jane wants to do is do a good

job. Almost immediately you feel the pain inside and on the face of Julia Garner ( Sin City) as her work environment seems to be toxic to say the least. With our local booming film industry British Columbians - especially women - will be able to relate to her plight. Already you can senseJane’s loneliness and unhappiness as she goes through the motions as a loner doing menial if not demeaning work as a low level assistant to a bunch of largely obnoxious so-called men at a production office, Now somewhat unhappy this hard-working well-meaning woman sees her judgment and “loyalty” questioned and put on the line when she thinks she notices some very bad behavior by one

of her superiors. To “out” the alleged aggressor or not becomes the question of the day as all concerned need to wrestle with their consciences concerning the benefits and costs of doing the right thing, You get that sense of uncomfortableness in watching The Assistant. Well written and directed by Kelly Green this Hugely relevant film in this modern age of he said she said is highly effective, Even it’s sometimes slow pacing perfectly aligns with the dilemma facing a woman trapped in a man’s world whose questionable judgment is put to the ultimate test. Freaky and spooky in a muted way The Assistant makes its point perfectly.

New for 2021, Chrysler Pacifica Sets a New Standard in all categories Windsor, Ontario: The Chrysler brand introduced this week, a new-for-2021 Chrysler Pacifica and set a new standard in the class by delivering available all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability combined with class-exclusive Stow ‘n Go seating and 116 standard and available safety and security features, the most in the industry, all wrapped in a refreshed exterior and interior design. “Through 37 years and more than 15 million minivans sold, Chrysler has defined the minivan segment, and we plan to continue redefining it with the new 2021 Chrysler Pacifica,” said Tim Kuniskis, Global Head of Alfa Romeo and Head of Passenger Cars – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “Not only does this new Pacifica look more capable, it is more capable. It offers classleading all-wheel-drive capability paired with Stow ‘n Go, a new customizable Uconnect 5 system that is five times faster, Whatever the challenge, Pacifica offers solutions.” The new Canadian-built 2021 Chrysler Pacifica offers the most advanced AWD system in its class and is the only vehicle to offer AWD along with Stow ‘n Go seating. The seamless, fully automatic AWD system is the only vehicle in the segment capable of transferring all available engine torque to the rear wheels, or whichever wheels have more available traction. The Pacifica AWD system is also able to sense and stop the drive shaft from spinning when AWD is not required, a class-exclusive feature in the segment that improves efficiency and reduces emissions. The Pacifica’s new exterior design expression is much more deeply sculpted, athletic and modern in character, with utility-vehicle-inspired design cues. A new top-of-the-line Pinnacle model sets a new standard in the segment with a sophisticated, luxurious interior that incorporates a new integrated Ultra console — the most functional centre console in its class — and elite appointments, such as quilted Nappa Caramel leather seats with new matching lumbar comfort pillows. The all-new Uconnect 5 system, offered for the first time in a North American vehicle and standard across the Pacifica lineup, includes a largest-inclass 10.1-inch touchscreen, which is nearly 20 per cent larger than the screen it replaces. The system is five times faster than Uconnect 4 and includes Alexa. With the Uconnect skill for Alexa, customers with Alexa-enabled devices at home can easily ask Alexa to start the car, lock/unlock doors and more. Uconnect 5 brings Amazon Alexa directly into the vehicle itself, giving occupants the freedom to interact with Alexa just as they do at home or on a personal device. With Alexa built-in, occupants can ask Alexa to play music, podcasts and audiobooks; add items to their to-do list; check news, weather, traffic, sports and other real-time information; and

access tens of thousands of Alexa skills. The new 2021 Chrysler Pacifica also gives parents a bird’s eye view of their most precious cargo thanks to the new available FamCAM interior camera that delivers a best-in-class high-definition image and allows the driver a view of rear-facing child seat occupants in the second row, and even allows them to zoom in on passengers. Another first for the segment, new USB Type C ports allow devices to charge up to four times faster than standard USB outlets. The Pinnacle offers the most luxurious interior in its class with one of Pacifica’s two new available integrated consoles designed to seamlessly flow into the instrument panel. The Pinnacle integrated Ultra console, the most functional in its class, seamlessly blends into the instrument panel with the transition assisted by two soft wings bordered with accent stitch. New for the 2021 is the available FamCAM interior camera, which projects a best-in-class, high-definition image, and allows the driver to keep close tabs on action happening in the back with segmentexclusive features, including a clear view of rearfacing child seat occupants, a split view display and a unique “zoom-to-seat” feature. The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica will continue to offer a choice of two powerful, efficient and advanced powertrains: the standard award-winning Pentastar V-6 engine and the still class-exclusive hybrid option. The next generation of the award-winning Pentastar V-6 gasoline engine, which is mated to a segment-exclusive TorqueFlite nine-speed automatic transmission, delivers 287 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque The Pacifica Hybrid, ranked among the top 10 best-selling PHEVs in the industry in Canada, is equipped with a regenerative braking system that redirects the kinetic energy used to stop the brakes into energy that is used to charge the vehicle’s battery. The Pacifica Hybrid may be fully recharged via the 6.6-kWh on-board charger or in as little as two hours using a 240-volt (Level 2) charger, available from Mopar through dealers. The Chrysler Pacifica has earned its spot as the most awarded minivan four years in a row, with the Pacifica serving as a no-compromise minivan ideally suited for today’s families.

Toronto, February 10, 2020 – Fresh from its world debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon last month, the 2020 Honda Civic Type R made its U.S. debut at the Chicago Auto Show, appearing for the first time in public in its new Boost Blue exterior colour scheme. The vehicle will make its Canadian debut at the upcoming Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto starting February 14th. The 2020 Civic Type R brings a number of changes and improvements to Type R’s winning formula, with revised styling, improved handling and braking, better engine cooling and the addition of standard Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technologies. Headlining the changes to the 2020 Civic Type R are numerous improvements to its world-beating driving dynamics. New two-piece brake rotors and brake pads are designed to reduce fade and improve high-speed braking efficiency, while suspension revisions for 2020 include updated dampers for improved ride comfort, stiffer rear bushings for better grip, and revisions to the front suspension and steering for even better steering feel. Additionally, the grille has been redesigned to allow better engine cooling under high demand. Inside, the 2020 Civic Type R will feature additional refinement that includes a new Alcantara™-wrapped steering wheel, and a new shifter with a restyled knob and shorter shift throws. Every 2020 Civic Type R will be equipped with the Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driver-

assistive technologies, making the Honda Sensing® suite standard equipment on all Civic models and trims when the 2020 Type R it goes on sale. Under the hood, the 2020 Civic Type R draws power from a race-bred 2.0-litre direct-injected and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with VTEC™ valvetrain putting out a peak 306 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (both SAE net), with power to the front wheels delivered through a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. As before, drivers can choose between three driving modes – Comfort, Sport and +R – that vary suspension firmness, steering and throttle response. New for 2020 is Active Sound Control, which modifies interior sound in concert with the chosen drive mode. The Type R’s selectable drive modes and sophisticated design make it both a thrilling companion on a mountain road or a racetrack and a remarkably civilized daily driver with a degree of flexibility unmatched in its competitive set.
