Charred remains of vehicles are seen at the Shiv Vihar area of the riot-affected northeast Delhi. THE death toll in the communal violence sparked by protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that has rocked northeast Delhi since Sunday rose to 38 on Thursday, with 11 more persons succumbing to injuries at various hospitals. The national capital was, however, spared any major clashes, shifting the focus on treatment, investigation, relief and rehabilitation. A police spokesperson said 48 FIRs had been registered and 514 suspects detained or arrested for questioning so far. Special teams also carried out raids in the Delhi-National Capital Region to arrest rioters. Late in the day, a case of murder and arson was lodged against Aam Aadmi Party corporator Tahir Hussain and other unidentified persons at the Dayalpur police station. While Hussain denied any involvement in the riots or the killing of an Intelligence Bureau man whose family had pointed fingers at him, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Kejriwal called for “double punishment” if any
partymen are found involved. Kejriwal also announced that the Delhi government will provide an ex-gratia of Rs. 1 million to families of those who lost their lives in the violence. The government will also pay for the treatment of those injured at private hospitals under the Farishtey scheme now extended to riot victims. He also announced Rs. 500,000 each for those sustaining permanent damage, and Rs. 200,000 and Rs. 20,000 respectively for those with serious and minor injuries. The investigation into the violence was transferred on Thursday to Delhi Police’s Crime Branch, and the cases will be probed by two Special Investigation Teams. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also held a review meeting after which it was decided that prohibitory orders under Section 144 will be relaxed for 10 hours on Friday as no major incident had been reported over 36 hours. The Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi also held a review meeting with senior police officers.
The scene on Thursday afternoon in Mustafabad in northeast Delhi, three days after the violence in this area on Monday. The L-G instructed the Special Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) to meet the injured persons and families of the deceased personally. Special Commissioner S.N. Srivastava visited Chand Bagh, one of the worst hit areas, to see the destruction caused by rioters and talk to residents. Around 350 meetings were conducted with local peace committees in the city. Shops reopened in the riot-hit areas amid large scale deployment of police and paramilitary personnel. Civic agencies also began clearing roads strewn with burnt vehicles and debris. However, people in the violencehit areas remained fearful. Many residents stayed away though the police had been deployed. Residents also complained that the police had not responded to their calls to the emergency “100” number since Monday. On Wednesday, after four days, both the Centre and the Delhi government swung into action, with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal going to the disturbed
parts of the city on Wednesday to rebuild confidence among people. In a walkabout shown live on television, Doval spoke to residents, some of whom posed tough questions. A bearded man could be heard telling him: “Muslims are being killed wherever their numbers are few.” “The situation is under control and people are satisfied. We have confidence in law enforcement agencies. The police are doing their job and are alert,” Doval said, suggesting that the demand for calling out the Army was not under consideration. Minutes after Congress president Sonia Gandhi demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for calm and normalcy to be restored at the earliest. These were his first public comments on the violence since Sunday. Earlier, at an unprecedented midnight hearing, the Delhi High Court directed the police to ensure safe passage for ambulances from a small hospital in the affected area to a better-equipped hospital.

The cutest part of the Trumps’ visit to India
U.S. First Lady Melania Trump was all smiles as she watched the nifty Bhangra moves of a little school kid who started dancing sponta-
neously on his own even as senior girl students were performing their Bhangra number at Sarvodaya Senior Secondary School in Nanakpura
in Delhi. Melania appeared utterly delighted at the impromptu performance of Gaganjit and even clapped along for him.
Indian business tycoon Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, shared the charming video on his Twitter handle, writing:
“In a world burdened by natural calamities, trade battles, social upheavals & pandemics, this viral clip showing a child’s unrestrained en-
thusiasm is a breath of fresh air. He didn’t give a hoot about the celebrity in front & the nervous secret service agent behind! Balle balle!”
Delhi violence: Sonia Gandhi demands Amit Shah’s resignation CONGRESS President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday held Union Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the violence that has left 23 dead in Delhi and demanded his immediate resignation. She said the events since last Sunday had a “history, design and pattern”. She held the Aam Aadmi Party government and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal “equally responsible” for not reaching out to the people to maintain peace. Gandhi was speaking at a press conference at the end of an emergency meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). She was accompanied by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, A.K. Antony, P. Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, K.C. Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala and Shakti Sinh Gohil.
“The tragic events since last Sunday have a history, design and pattern. It was evident even during the Delhi elections. Several BJP leaders made inflammatory statements intended to create an atmosphere of fear and hate,” she said. In particular, she referred to BJP leader Kapil Mishra’s statement on Sunday, setting an ultimatum for the Delhi police to get evacuate the protesters from Shaheen Bagh. Gandhi said the violence was the result of the “collective failure” of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and the Arvind Kejriwal government in the State. Reading out the CWC resolution, Gandhi said, “After reviewing the situation, the CWC is of the firm opinion that what has happened in Delhi is a colossal failure of duty for which the entire responsibility
must be borne by the Central government, particularly the Home Minister, and calls upon the Home Minister to tender his resignation immediately.” The Chief Minister was equally responsible for administrative inaction. “The Chief Minister must be visible in the affected areas and in constant communication with the people,” she said. The CWC posed five questions to the Delhi and Union governments. “Where was the Home Minister and what was he doing since last Sunday? Where was the Chief Minister of Delhi and what was he doing since last Sunday?” Gandhi also questioned the evident lack of intelligence reports after the conclusion of the Delhi Assembly election. “What was the strength of the police force deployed on the night of Sunday
when there were clear indications that violence will break out? Why were additional security forces not called in immediately when it was clear that the situation was beyond the control of the Delhi police?” She called upon Congress workers and leaders to visit the affected areas, extend help to the families of the affected and help build bridges between communities. She said the Modi government should have called a meeting of all political parties to brief them of the situation and the action taken by the government. “Whenever there was a crisis of any kind, whether in Kashmir or any other part of the country, the first thing the Vajpayee government would do was to call leaders of all parties. But, unfortunately and sadly, ...ever since Modi entered office in 2014, as far
as I know, no such meeting has ever been called,” she said. Ms. Gandhi also expressed the fear that the violence could spread to other parts of the country. Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar hit out at Gandhi and the Congress. Javadekar accused Gandhi of “playing dirty politics” over the violence. “In such times, all parties should ensure that peace is maintained, blaming the government instead is dirty politics. Politicising this violence is wrong,” he said. Prasad said he condemned Gandhi’s statement. “Tension in Delhi should end. Many people are spreading violence here. At a time when Delhi is returning to peace, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s remark is untimely. When peace is required, there should be no politics,” he said.

Trump renews offer to mediate on Kashmir, but skirts CAA INDIA and the United States on Tuesday strengthened their partnership with agreements on healthcare and energy, and issued a joint statement that designated the two countries as “Comprehensive Global Strategic partners”. The statement followed bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump, during which the later renewed his offer to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir and discussed the issue of “religious freedom”. The discussions took place at Hyderabad House even as communallycharged mob violence in several parts of the city left homes and shops burning. Addressing a press conference later in the evening, Trump, however, said he had not discussed the specifics of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, that sparked the violence as he raised issues of “religious liberty” of “Muslims and Christians in India” with Modi. “We did talk about religious freedom, and Prime Minister Modi told me very strongly that he wants religious freedom in India, and that they have worked very hard for it here,” he said. Trump also said he had discussed the situation in Jammu and Kashmir with Modi. Renewing his offer of mediating between India and Pakistan, which India has consistently rejected, he said the issue of Kashmir had “two sides”. “I said I will help, do whatever I can do, because my relationship with both gentlemen [PMs of India and Pakistan] is so good. Anything I can do to mediate, anything I can do to help, I will do,” he said, adding that while he understood that the two countries would discuss the issue of Kashmir between them, they had been “at it for a “very long time” without results. Trump praised Modi as a “very religious and calm man” and thanked India for the welcome he received both in Ahmedabad and in Delhi. When

asked specifically about the CAA, he said the issue was India’s internal matter, and “hopefully they will make the right decision for the people.” He also referred to the $3 billion purchases of helicopters and other military hardware as a key takeaway of the visit. “They’re buying a lot (of American defence equipment). They’re also going to be buying a lot of our energy; we are going to be the number one country in energy, so that will be exciting,” Mr. Trump said, referring to an MoU on LNG pipeline infrastructure signed between Indian Oil Corporation, and US companies ExxonMobil and Chart industries. However, two pending agreements between LNG companies Tellurian and Petronet as well as the Westinghouse agreement for nuclear reactors have not yet been finalised. Other agreements flagged by the Ministry of External Affairs on Space and Intellectual Property Rights also were not finalised during the visit. An MEA official said the unfinished agreements “had some procedural delays and should be ready soon”. The two sides agreed to a “joint working group” (JWG) on fighting narcotics as part of their homeland security dialogue and two MoUs on mental health and safety of medical products were signed. While Indian and U.S. negotiators failed to forge a trade deal in time for Mr. Trump’s visit, Mr. Modi said they would work on a legal framework for a future deal. A few hours after their joint appearance, Trump addressed an hour-long press conference alone, where he criticised India once again for the “highest tariffs in the world”, including on the Harley Davidson motorcycles. On strategic issues, Modi hailed the military and defence partnership and also spoke of their cooperation on keeping a free and open IndoPacific. “This cooperation is particularly important for rule-based international order, especially in Indo-Pacific and global commons,” Modi said.

US panel on religious freedom: Delhi violence targeting Muslims New Delhi / Washington (IANS): The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has said that the Delhi violence in which over 30 people were killed, was specifically targeted against the Muslims. Expressing “grave concern over the ongoing violence taking place in Delhi”, the USCIRF in a statement said that as President Donald Trump’s inaugural visit to India winds down, North-East Delhi has been rocked by deadly rioting, with reports of violence and mobs specifically targeting Mus-
lims. “These incidents are even more concerning in the context of efforts within India to target and potentially disenfranchise Muslims across the country, in clear violation of international human rights standards,” USCIRF Commissioner Anurima Bhargava said. “According to reports, several mosques have also been set alight or vandalized. Many Muslim residents have been forced to flee the area. This unrest comes in the wake of widespread protests against the Citizen-
ship (Amendment) Act following its passage in December 2019. “The brutal and unchecked violence growing across Delhi cannot continue,” Bhargava said adding that the Indian government must take swift action to ensure the safety of all of its citizens. “Instead, reports are mounting that the Delhi police have not intervened in violent attacks against Muslims, and the government is failing in its duty to protect its citizens.” USCIRF Chair Tony Perkins said the
Akal Takht extends help violence-hit people in Delhi Chandigarh (IANS): Coming to extend helping hand to violence-hit people of the national capital, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh on Wednesday asked the Sikh gurdwaras in Delhi to extend all kind of possible help to the victims.
Flaying the violence in Delhi, he said, in a statement, that “the principle of Sikhism is to take care of any victim who comes for help”. “Violence in Delhi is condemnable. There are reports of deaths and injuries to people. It is principle of Sikhism
to take care of any victim who comes for help. The situation in Delhi is serious and so the managements of all Sikh Gurudwaras in Delhi should help the victims of violence in this time of grief irrespective of their religion,” he added.
Coronavirus in China delays smartphone order: Punjab Chief Minister Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said the first set of smartphones, promised by his government, would be distributed as soon as China is able to send them to Punjab. The phones had already been ordered from China, which unfortunately had to delay release of the order due to the unprecedented coronavirus problem, the Chief Minister told the House during his speech. The issue, he said, had been rightly raised by some of the members since the promise of smartphones was part of his government’s election manifesto.
His government had already notified the scheme and procurement of the phones had only been delayed due to the health emergency that had led to a shutdown in China, as a result of which the consignment of phones has not been received. The phones will be provided as soon as we receive the consignment, he assured the members, adding the Congress President had, in fact, set up committees to ensure implementation of all promises in Congress-led states and the smartphones promise would definitely be fulfilled by his government at the earliest possible.
Will not allow movies promoting violence: Punjab Chief Minister: Punjab will not allow any
cently banned ‘Shooter’ being in the pipeline for release. Reiterating his firm commitment to ensuring a safe and secure social environment across the state, Amarinder Singh said nothing would be allowed to disturb Punjab’s hard-earned peace and communal harmony. The state government would write to the Censor Board on such movies since the matter comes under its purview, he added. Earlier this month, Amarinder Singh had ordered a ban on the movie ‘Shooter’, based on the life and crimes of notorious gangster Sukha Kahlwan.
movie seeking to promote violence or gangsters in the state, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday asserted in the state Assembly, saying his government would also approach the Censor Board in this regard. The Chief Minister made the remark on the third day of the ongoing Budget session during a discussion in response to a question raised by Khanna MLA Gurkirat Singh Kotli in the Zero Hour. Kotli expressed concern over more movies like the re-
ongoing violence in Delhi and the reported “attacks against Muslims, their homes and shops, and their houses of worship are greatly disturbing”. One of the essential duties of any responsible government, he said, is to provide protection and physical security for its citizens, regardless of faith. “We urge the Indian government to take serious efforts to protect Muslims and others targeted by mob violence.” In its annual report last year, the USCIRF classified India as a “Tier 2” country for engaging in or tolerating
religious freedom violations that meet at least one of the elements of the “systematic, ongoing, egregious standard for designations as a “country of particular concern (CPC)”, under the International Religious Freedom Act. The ongoing violence in North-East Delhi erupted after clashes between pro and anti-CAA protesters on Sunday. Besides the casualties, over 200 others have been injured in the deadliest violence in the national capital in decades.
Punjab Chief Minister to meet Modi on passport waiver for Kartarpur Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will lead an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek waiver of passport and further simplification of the process for visiting the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara and to urge him to pressure Pakistan to slash the $20 fee on Indian pilgrims. A resolution to this effect was passed unanimously in the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday. The Chief Minister, while intervening on MLA Gurpartap Singh Wadala’s suggestion that the state government should take up these issues with the Centre, asked him to simultaneously take up this issue with Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal in order to prepare the ground for early resolution in the larger interests of the devotees. Meanwhile, moving the resolution, Punjab Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said after the Kartarpur corridor opened on November 9, 2019, after decades of prayers by the Nanak Naam Leva Sangat, the corridor’s history would be written in golden letters, he said. Pointing out that at present, any
Nanak Naam Leva devotee, who intends to visit Kartarpur Sahib for Darshan-Didar, requires passport identification, besides paying a fee of $20, the resolution points out that many of Punjab’s residents are such who do not possess passports and are deprived of visiting Kartarpur Sahib despite being desirous of ‘darshan’. Apart from this, devotees are facing lot of hardships due to the difficult process of online registration, which is a major hurdle for devotees, as a result of which many devotees are not going for ‘darshan’, said the resolution. Through the resolution, the House strongly recommended to the Punjab government to take up these issues with the Union government so that the latter could impress upon the Pakistan government to “remove the condition of passport and, in lieu of it, other documents like Aadhar card should be permitted for identification”. The resolution also urged the Centre to take up with Pakistan the issue of simplifying the cumbersome procedure for registration by the devotees on the website of the government of India.

Centre trying to destroy social fabric: Punjab Chief Minister Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said the public reaction to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was “expected” since the BJP government at the Centre was trying to destroy India’s cherished constitutional and social fabric through this draconian legislation.
Responding to a question from the media informally outside the Vidhan Sabha, the Chief Minister said the BJP-led central government had failed to factor in the possible reaction of the people in its plans to impose the CAA, as well as the NRC and NPR, on the nation. “Naturally, there had to be a re-
action to the Centre’s attempt to trample over the country’s democratic ideals of socialism and secularism,” he said, adding that the people’s angst would not end but would only grow bigger till the central government realized its mistake and withdrew the legislation. Asked about the Centre’s decision
not to invite Congress President Sonia Gandhi to the banquet hosted for the visiting US President Donald Trump, Amarinder Singh described it as unfortunate and said such a thing had never happened under Congress governments. Replying to another question, he said the Delhi Chief Minister should
have been invited for the US First Lady’s visit to Delhi schools. Though he was not a supporter of AAP policies, it was customary for the Chief Minister to be invited when a VIP, such as US President Donald Trump, was on a visit and his wife was going to a school of that state, he said.
Kartarpur Corridor to remain open despite security concerns: Amarinder Singh
Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday made it clear that regardless of security concerns, the Kartarpur Corridor will remain open for ‘Khulle Darshan Deedar’ of the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. In a statement in the state Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister asserted that “we will not let the Kartarpur Corridor be closed down”. “The Kartarpur Sahib Corridor has been opened because we wanted it to be opened; every Punjabi wanted it, and had prayed for it in ‘ardas’ every day, along with praying for opening of Nankana Sahib, Panja Sahib and other gurdwaras,” he said, urging the governments of India and Pakistan to work for the opening of these gurdwaras too. Amarinder Singh, who had requested the Speaker for permission to make his statement before the Question Hour, was responding to criticism by the Opposi-
tion on the recent remarks of the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) regarding the threat potential of the Kartarpur Corridor.
in the state, the Chief Minister said “it is our responsibility is to ensure this does not happen again”. “My government was party to the decision to open up the Corridor. The whole of my government, including ministers and officers of various departments, worked tirelessly day and night, along with the central government, to acquire the land and build the necessary infrastructure in record time, including security infrastructure, for the launch of the Sri Kartarpur Sahib corridor to coincide with the 550 years birthday celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in November 2019,” said Amarinder Singh. “Personally also, I made numerous trips to review the progress of the Sri Kartarpur Sahib corridor project, and my government even held Cabinet meetings in Gurdaspur district to review the pace of work and ensure necessary coordination between various state and central government departments and agencies.”
Noting “with great concern the statements made by different persons and organizations on the DGP’s remarks about security concerns relating to Sri Kartarpur Sahib”, the Chief Minister termed the reactions totally avoidable. “The DGP had apologized. Everybody makes mistakes; even I make mistakes. We are human beings,” said Amarinder Singh and asked: “Is there was anyone from the Opposition who could claim not to have made mistakes?” “We all make mistakes, this issue is over now, let us concentrate on peace and on ensuring that the difficult times through which Punjab had been do not recur,” he added. Pointing out that 35,000 Punjabis and 1,700 policemen had lost their lives, in addition to the Army soldiers, during the years of militancy
Will give up life than sharing water with states: Punjab CM: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said he was ready to give up his life rather than give the state’s scarce water resources to the other states. Wrapping up the debate on the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address, the Chief Minister said Punjab did not have surplus water and, in line with internationally accepted riparian principles, would
not allow transfer of water from basin to non-basin areas. His government had made every possible effort to achieve this and shall continue to work in for protecting the water rights of Punjab, to ensure the livelihood of millions of Punjabi farmers and landless farm labourers, said the Chief Minister, pointing out that protecting the state’s water was a top priority for his government. Referring to measures taken by his gov-
The apprehensions of threat to the security of the people and the country were, however, “serious”, the Chief Minister said, adding that these apprehensions “are not because the corridor has been opened but because of the bad intent of Pakistan. The Chief Minister said his government had classified documents which he could not circulate in the House. After meddling in Kashmir for long, the ISI had only one task now -- to disturb the peace of Punjab, he said, adding that Pakistan was blatantly trying to foment trouble in the state. In the last three years, his government had succeeded in checking ISI’s nefarious designs, with Punjab Police had busting 32 modules, arresting 154 terrorists and seizing 41 AK47s, MP9s, MP5 rifles, 156 other rifles and pistols, 35 hand grenades, including those used in the Nirankari Bhawan attack in Amritsar.
ernment for saving water resources, the Chief Minister said apart from enactment of the Punjab Water Resources (Management and Regulation) Act of 2020, the government had also piloted a unique project namely ‘Pani Bachao, Paisa Kamao’ aimed at incentivizing farmers to save water and earn money by consuming lesser ground water. The project, under which agriculture consumers are given a fixed electricity enti-
Showing pictures of Chinese drones, Amarinder Singh said these had been seized from a man swimming through the Ravi river but there might be others that had not been caught. “Who knows what their motive is?” “What problem ISI has with Taliban, Iran or Balochistan, we don’t know. But what they have been doing in India is known to all. Earlier it was Kashmir, and now even Punjab is their target,” said the Chief Minister. Later, responding to concerns raised by Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Amarinder Singh said Pakistan could not be trusted, as was evident from the developments in 1947, 1965, 1971 and the Kargil War. The Pakistan Army was highly committed against India, with Prime Minister Imran Khan being a mere puppet in their hands, he said, adding that ISI was also a part of the country’s military.
tlement for every month of the year and no bills are issued to the farmers, will be expanded under the Budget 2020-21, he said. The Chief Minister said the government would complete the Shahpur Kandi Dam Project in 2022-23 and would also make every possible effort to complete the Kandi Canal, along with attendant water courses, by providing requisite finances during 2020-21.

“It’s simple.” If running a business is that simple and signing a document is just a formality, there would be no business failures and no unexpected liability for debt. The title “director of a corporation” sounds great. It conjures up images of being a part of the business world. However, when signing on as a director you accept responsibility, in a general sense, for overseeing the running of the company. The intent is to protect all interested parties, employees, creditors, and shareholders who don’t have regular access to the company’s operating information, etc. In this case, I assume there is only one shareholder (your brother) or, at most, a few family members or friends. This will probably mean that your role as a supervisor is not critical. But beware; if the company grows and it takes on new shareholders, your responsibility grows. For you, the biggest potential problem is your liability for unremitted statutory payments. The company is supposed to send in regular payments for such things as employee deductions (income tax, U.I., C.P.P.), GST collected, and W.C.B. coverage. If these amounts aren’t paid, you, as a director, are personally responsible for the debt. This means the government can come after you for the amount owing, even to the point of garnisheeing
your wages or seizing and selling your assets. Then there’s the matter of director responsibility for employee wages (for details you can contact the Province of B.C. Labour Standards Branch). The bottom line – it’s not just a matter of reading what you’re signing. You have to understand what you’re putting your name to and the responsibility involved. If necessary, get independent legal advice. A little money spent at the beginning can save a lot of money and paid down the road when a “mere formality” becomes a “formal problem.” Writer is a certified BIA counselor at New Life Debt Solutions and can be contacted at 604 909 2277.

Aamir Khan to finally take a leap in web series world and it’s not ‘Mahabharat’ Not very long ago, Aamir Khan was seen in a photo with Shah Rukh Khan at a Netflix event, which made fans wonder the actor would be making his web series debut at the platform. It is, however, unlikely that Aamir would collaborate with Netflix for his web show. The actor is finally ready for his web series debut (which is not ‘Mahabharat’) and it is not with Netflix. A report on Mid-Day goes on to
state that Aamir Khan would not take the path already taken by Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. Mr. Perfectionist would rather make his debut with India’s much-used platform Amazon Prime, with the help of his writers. According to the report, Aamir wants a multi-series magnum opus for the platform, which is conceptualized and developed by his team of writers. “It was re-
cently pitched to the heads of the streaming giant, who have been keen to collaborate with the superstar and looking for a project that is worthy of him. The show is a human interest drama, a source told the daily. Confirming that the project is not Aamir Khan’s dream project ‘Mahabharat’ and that would indeed take place at a later stage, the source confirmed, “For now, there are three well-rounded
ideas that are being worked upon. Either way, Aamir is currently busy with his Christmas release ‘Laal Singh Chadha’, which is the Hindi adaptation of ‘Forrest Gump’. The actor, like a ritual every year, might announce his next project on his birthday which takes place on March 14. So it might only be less than a month’s wait till the actor clarifies about his upcoming projects.
Thappad movie review: Taapsee Pannu film is a scorching indictment of everything that’s wrong with us There is a fine line between making a film on a real story and making one that tells a real story. Taapsee Pannu starrer Thappad firmly falls in the latter category. A powerful and impactful film, Thappad makes you angry and uncomfortable, and, at the same time, it makes you question the everyday misogyny that you willingly ‘adjust to’ in real life. Director Anubhav Sinha refuses to normalise issues that are taken for granted in a regular setup, instead he asserts and reasserts that even if it is ‘just one slap’, why and how can a man get away with it so easily? And he doesn’t do so with just Taapsee’s story, but shows multiple women across strata facing similar struggles in different forms. However, the multiple stories don’t take away from the continuity of Thappad and Amrita’s story but amplify it. I loved how Sinha captures the nuances of his story and his characters. You don’t feel that you are watching a film in theatre; instead you relate to Taapsee’s Amrita – a strong-headed girl who despite being a trained classical dancer chooses to be a full-time homemaker. From kitchen to the bedroom, she’s a doting wife whose life revolves around her career-oriented and highly ambitious husband, Vikram (Pavail Gulati) and taking care of her ailing grandmother (Tanvi Azmi). Amrita’s universe turns upside down when Vikram slaps her at a party to celebrate his promotion. When he realizes that his dreams maybe nipped in the bud due to office politics, he vents out on his wife in public. In that moment, Amrita realizes it wasn’t ‘just one slap’ but there are so many more other unfair silent slaps that she had been ignoring for so for long. Will she be able to put her self-esteem over love? Will she forgive Vikram and move on like women are expected
to? Will she give her marriage another chance? Thappad delves on all this and more in quite an engaging manner. Thappad’s strength also lies in its strong supporting cast. Ratna Pathak Shah and Kumud Mishra as Taapsee’s onscreen parents make you feel like your own. Both deliver fine performances; while Shah expects his daughter to understand the unbreakable bond a marriage is supposed to be, Mishra always has Amrita’s back. Then there’re Dia Mirza and Ram Kapoor whose parts, I feel, are quite half-baked and rushed, put in there just to join the dots. The most underwhelming performance surprisingly comes from one of the strongest characters shown in the film -- Nethra (Maya Sarao) as Amrita’s high profile lawyer. While she’s all prim and proper to look her part, there’s something that just feels very superficial about her character. One thing that was unsettling for me after watching Thappad was the number of ‘buts and if’ I was left with after the film got over. What if Vi-
kram had apologised to Amrita for that slap on the same night? What if he slapped her inside the privacy of their home and not in front of spectators at a party? What if Amrita’s parents didn’t offer her support? What if she wasn’t self-sufficient to think of separation over a slap? These are some questions that haunted me for long. But I guess, Sinha has weaved his screenplay in a manner that it’s a victory for him if the audiences ask such questions to themselves after Thappad. The film takes on deep-rooted patriarchy and unfair marital norms that our society doesn’t wish to raise a voice against. Sinha’s Thappad is the much needed slap everyone needed to break the silence and call out the wrong. Even if it doesn’t lead to things changing overnight, it certainly has started a debate, a dialogue that can make way for some change sooner or later. At 2 hours 21 minutes, the film may seem a bit long, but the story moves at a decent pace and keeps you engaged. Through his protagonist’s journey, Sinha shakes your dormant conscience and forces you to have a dialogue with yourself. The patriarchal norms that we have conditioned to submit to and everyday misogyny that we accept without question are shown for what they are. Whether it’s telling women, ‘Shaadi mein yeh sab chalta hai’ or ‘Thoda bardasht karna seekhna chahiye autaron ko’, the dialogues just re-emphasise what we have heard time and again. Don’t forget a dialogue where one of Vikram’s colleagues justifies his action saying, ‘When you’re truly in love, thodi bahut maar peet toh is expression of love only na’. Yes, that did make me cringe and took me back to the debate Shahid Kapoor-starrer Kabir Singh that started last year. Taapsee Pannu delivers a spectacular perfor-
mance as a submissive and vulnerable wife whose life could have been poles apart if she chosen a different path. Despite playing this restrained character, you see her fiery and feisty side onscreen at many places. Her silences are more powerful than her actual dialogues in the film and that’s a great thing for an actor to pull off. You connect with her pain, anger and helplessness when she’s trying to break free from the mould that the society has forced her into. Debutant Pavail Gulati seamlessly steps into Vikram’s skin and he’s a character you hate throughout for his insensitivity. He’s unapologetic about his action and he’d immediately say sorry to his boss but can’t do or even feel the same to his wife. He has given a confident performance and despite Taapsee stealing the show, it’s pleasant to see how Gulati holds his ground.

2020 Mazda CX3 GT All Wheel Drive: This Small CUV Packs a Big Punch! By Veeno Dewan For 2020, the Mazda CX-3 sub-compact sized Crossover continues to impress, coming off some big awards since its introduction in 2016. It had a mild update in 2019, with: a new grille, restyled taillights and wheels, plus a slight power increase. It is still a racylooking CUV with the typical, lithe, sleek styling from Mazda. It is not box- like in any way, with a swooping roofline and a raked hatchback profile. Interior updates from last year include: improved noise vibration and harshness damping, an electronic parking brake, new redesigned seats and optional full-leather seating surfaces. For 2020, the CX-3 arrives in three trim levels; a wellequipped GX model, a GS with more kit, and a top GT trim model with all the bells and whistles. There is only one engine choice; namely Mazda’s superbly engineered SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre four-cylinder, rated at 148 horsepower and 146
pound-feet of torque. The CX-3 comes in either FWD or AWD and transmission of choice is the six-speed automatic transmission, with the Sport mode. Front-wheeldrive is standard on GX and GS, with Mazda’s predictive i-Activ all-wheel drive available as standard on the GT. Also on the GT is Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control, (GVC) that creates G-force, on the front wheels when turning for more tire grip, and control. The base MRSP for our tester came in at $31, 00, a 2019 Mazda CX 3 AWD in Mazda’s classy looking Ce-
ramic Metallic paint that Came with such standard features as: SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engine with Cylinder Deactivation; offering 186 horsepower with the Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed transmission with manual shift mode. Standard equipment on the GT Model included: 18-inch alloy wheels, push button start, 7-inch color touchscreen display with Mazda Connect, HMI commander, rearview camera, power moonroof, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, leather-trimmed upholstery, 10-way power driver seat (includes power
lumbar support), driver’s seat memory (2 memory settings), automatic on/ off headlights, rain-sensing wipers, full LED exterior lighting, navigation system, Bose Audio system w/ 7 speakers, automatic climate controls, advanced keyless entry, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Pedestrian Detection, High Beam Control, Forward Obstruction Warning, Smart City Brake Support, Smart Brake Support, colour Active Driving Display. No other options on our well -equipped car apart from the $200 Ceramic metallic paint. With options, Freight and PDE, our tester’s final price came to $33,190. The cabin in our GT Model featured a black monotone interior, everything looks well-made and durable looking interior wise. There’s a simple pop up heads-up display that provides traffic sign recognition along with other basic info on the GT, while a seveninch screen mounted at the top of the centre stack displays the navigation and au-
dio functions. Three knobs are situated below for climate control. Quality is very high and the seats are comfortable and supportive. There is space for four in this vehicle, however it is a tight fit when you do cram in four tall adults. Someone’s going to have to give up the legroom out back! The rear bench seat is cozy and features a 60:40 splitting folding function, with 467L of cargo space behind it. With the rear seat folded, there is 1,447 litres of cargo space in the CX-3 and a rear cargo cover. On the road, the 2020 Mazda cx3 AWD offers superlative driving dynamics and feels more like a sporty sedan than a CUV. AWD is a distinct advantage with its superior grip and well balanced torque delivery with the help of Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus stability control system – which uses an imperceptibly light drag on the outside front brake to aid in cornering. The 2.0-liter L4 is a watch- like unit that never falters, never runs out of steam and is a lively
willing performer—the six speed manual transmission is also a nicely matched unit The CX- 3 AWD is built and tuned to handle those sweeping curves and tight bends with equal measure and takes bends assertively well. The ride is firm, but not uncomfortable and in no way jittery when unloaded. Not a lot to complain apart from the interior which is all black, a few pops of color here and there would liven it up. Also you may want to consider the larger Mazda CX-5 or CX-9 Models if you want more interior space or a third row. The CX-3 GT AWD is the one to get for all the luxury, convenience features, and the very efficient AWD, but the GX and GS all offer excellent value for money. Highly recommended if a smaller performance CUV attractive is what you need. A firm favourite, and not hard to see why. 2020 Mazda CX 3 All-Wheel Drive Base price: $31,000 Price as tested with options, Freight and PDE: $33,195 Website: www.mazda.ca

2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 4MATIC Coupe: Top of the Class!
By Veeno Dewan The new, second-generation CLA luxury sedan has been moved up in the MercedesBenz hierarchy, giving up the entry slot to the A-Class. The CLA now neatly slot in between the A-Class and C-Class. Although its termed as coupe, the CLA is in fact a sleek four - door and has been given a makeover for the 2020 model year. There is new dramatic profile, with neater styling to emphasize length, while powerful looking rear side haunches add weigh and heft to the overall design. There is large aggressive AMG “diamond” grille upfront, while the rear has new taillights. The trunk also has a wider opening. The CLA looks good, expensive, taut and fast with an as standard AMG styling package that adds some body trim, lowered suspension, 18-inch wheels, or optional 19 inchers and larger brakes. The CLA arrives in Canada, with 4Matic allwheel drive as standard hooked up to a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder making 221 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed 7GDTC dual-clutch transmission does shifting duties. Our tester was a Damin blue model with 19” inch AMG Matte Cross Spoke wheels and a MRSP of $43,000, equipped with following options: the Premium package at $3,000, and the Technology package at $1,600. Other extra’s included the: Intelligent Drive Package, Navigation Package,
Active Parking Assist, 360 Camera and Night Package and Multifunction sports steering wheel. Total price -$55,340 plus delivery and taxes Most impressive in the new 2020 CLA model is the upgraded interior. There a bolder, striking looking cabin with a sleek digital dash housing the digital instrument cluster and infotainment display. The whole look is more modern and sophisticated than other sedans in this class. Our tester came with plush Black Artico faux leather and optional Black Open Pore wood trim interior. Opt for the Premium Package as equipped on our test car and the front digital twin screens increase from 7 inch to an impressive 10.25 inches, however a row of real buttons below the trio of round vents give HVAC

The seats are superbly comfortable for long hours of driving, and in general the cabin is roomy up front, just a tad squishy in the rear due the coupe like roofline, however the 2020 CLA does offer tad more shoulder room (44 mm) out back. Highlight feature when it comes to in-car technology is definitely the superb new Mercedes’ cloud based MBUX interface that I have come across in other Mercedes. MBUX is a voice activated concierge system that can learn your preferences and adapt to them. Voice command is activated by simply saying, “Hey Mercedes,” and relaying your request using voice. It worked very well and intuitively, when asked to do things like turning on heated seats, changing temperature, radio stations and a host of other request related to navigation and infotainment. Another really cool feature is the MBUX system’s gesture recognition for tasks you would normally have to push a button or toggle around. You don’t have to use MBUX voice command, as it can be deactivated as alternately, you can communicate via a touchpad or the afore mentioned hand gestures. There is also a touchpad with haptic feedback, and you can also access most functions via a couple
of thumb swipe pads on the steering wheel as well. Finally another cool piece of tech is the augmented reality navigation system, which overlays street name graphics over a camera view of upcoming turns. On the road. The CLA is smoother and quieter than the previous model the 2; 0 liter engine delivers more than enough power, with smooth turbine -like acceleration. The 7-speed auto transmission’s shifts are seamless in operation, with no hesitation or jerkiness. Switch to sport mode and the CLA gets busy with quicker, more urgent power delivery. Handling-wise, the CLA feels taut, solid and composed, with slightly lower suspension that allows for firm, steady, wallow free entry and exits in bends. Good engineering and a great chassis mean the CLA behaves like a smaller, nimble premium car. To sum up, the CLA is wonderful, with a world class interior and engineering – up there with its segment contemporaries from Audi, BMW, and Lexus. It is priced very attractively, but then again most buyers will load up on ‘must have’ options that will hike up the price. An awesome l car that gets top marks in every category. 2020 Mercedes Benz CLA250: Priced from MRSP $43,000. Price as tested with options: $55,340 plus delivery and taxes.
