Non-Resident Indians from Canada and elsewhere fly in to campaign for AAP in Delhi New Delhi (IANS): Not just the locals but a large number of NonResident Indians (NRIs) too are campaigning for the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi believing that party chief Arvind Kejriwal will bring in a change in the city. Hundreds of NRIs have flown into the city and are working on the ground as the national capital gears up for the Assembly polls on February 8. Speaking to IANS, Convenor AAP Overseas, Prithvi Reddy said close to 500 NRIs are in Delhi campaigning for the AAP on the ground. He said the NRIs are taking part in the party’s campaigning and are seeking votes for the AAP, managing the volunteers and doing all kinds of tasks for the party. Reddy said while some NRIs have came to Delhi in the last leg of the election, several others have been in the city from past two to three months. “The support from the NRIs started with the India Against Corruption. I think they (NRIs) look at the Aam Aadmi Party as a ray of hope. People go abroad as it offers them a better opportunity and a better living standard. However, they will always be a second-grade citizen there. They feel like an outsider there, so they feel and wish that they should go back home.” He said the AAP gives them hope that it will lead the country towards development so that the NRIs can return to the country and enjoy the same living standard that they enjoy abroad. Explaining about the developed nations, he said that in foreign countries one has to pay taxes while the government takes care of education and health. “You don’t have to pay again. But here (in

Arvind Kejriwal addressing a press conference this week. India), you pay taxes and then pay expensive school fees and hospital bills.” “The money saved from these could be used for a better living standard. The AAP comes as a ray of hope here.” He said the AAP supporters continue to repose trust in the party and Kejriwal’s leadership as it has fulfilled the promises. “(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi was the hope and a rising star during the 2014 elections. But everyone has seen that after five years, they have not delivered on the promises. But AAP fulfilled its promises and worked even more harder than it promised,” Reddy said. He said that the public can sense that the AAP is bringing a positive change in the country. Reddy said: “Right from the inception of the AAP, about 20 per cent of the election funding came from overseas supporters, including people from Canada, the UK, the US, Singapore, UAE among several others.” Adding on to Reddy’s information,

Kamal Garg, a software engineer based in Vancouver in Canada, told IANS that the funding and support is coming from so many small countries that “we cannot even imagine that party can get support from such faraway lands”. Reddy say the NRIs see this as an investment in the country. Speaking about Garg, Reddy said being a Punjabi, Garg is managing about 500 Punjabi volunteers in the city. “Everyone is contributing in whatever way they can. Despite any position, the NRIs are working for AAP.” Garg recalled that he also contributed in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections. Hailing from Punjab’s Moga, Garg said he has been part of the AAP since the formation of the IAC. “I was a volunteer during the IAC. Soon after, I went to Canada. But I kept following Arvind (Kejriwal) and his work.” He said that the overseas volunteers stay connected with the party here through various social

media platforms. Garg also said they have formed a team of NRI volunteers, after people having mutual admiration for the AAP, came together. He said their vision is the Kejriwal’s vision of India. “While staying here, we don’t realise, but after staying in developed nations you will realise the importance of health and education. Why we need more concentration on the two sectors?” He said it is a wish and desire of the NRIs that Kejriwal becomes the Prime Minister one day. “Weather this happens in one year or 20. We would love to see him as the PM.” He explained that it is not just an emotional desire. “But Arvind’s plans for the nation are the plans for a developed India. India cannot be a developed nation with polarisation. It will be developed with education. People cannot read and understand the constitution without being educated. People will read and understand it if they are educated.” Reddy said all the NRIs wishes to return to the nation one day, but lack of opportunity and a better lifestyle stops them from doing so. “No matter what the NRIs say but their heart is still in the country. The field here (in India) is not level playing as those having contacts and influences can get things done easily, while the rest keep running. But AAP works for everyone without any discrimination.” AAP Canada convener Jaskirat Kaur also wished to see Kejriwal become the Prime Minister one day. Co-Convenor AAP Overseas Preeti Menon explained that the NRIs have a dream that India too became as developed as the countries or cities they are living in.

New Delhi (IANS): The Narendra Modi government on Wednesday announced the formation of a trust for the construction of the muchawaited Ram Temple in Ayodhya. In this context, a notification by the Home Ministry said the office of well-known lawyer Keshav Parasaran would be the address of the “Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirtha Kshetra” office. Parasaran, 93, is a highlydecorated legal luminary. He has been an Attorney General of India, besides being a Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awardee.

Keshav Parasaran: Man tasked to run Ram Temple Trust His office address -- R-20, Greater Kailash Part 1, New Delhi -- has been mentioned in the notification of the Home Ministry as the registered office address of the Trust. Even at the age of 93, he came up with spirited arguments for long hours in favour of Ram Mandir in the Supreme Court that gained everyone’s attention. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat had visited his house during a visit to Delhi, soon after the decision in favour of Ram Temple in November was announced.

According to sources, Parasaran, who batted for the Hindu camp in the Supreme Court, has also been included in the 15-member Ram Mandir Trust. Who is Parasaran? Born on October 9, 1927 in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, Parasaran was the Attorney General between 1983 and 1989 in the Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi-led governments. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee government conferred the Padma Bhushan on him in 2003, while the Manmohan Singh government gave him the Padma Vibhushan in

Change in mindset could allow women in Army command posts: Supreme Court New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Wednesday said if there is a will and a change in mindset on the part of the government, then women officers could be allocated command posts in the Army. The court also pointed out that there are many other services along with combat operations where women could be accommodated. Senior Advocate R. Balasubramaniam, representing the Ministry of Defence, said there are no rules in the appointments, which contribute towards gender-based discrimination for promotion, appointments, etc. He also emphasised that all provisions and rules apply equally to both men and women, and any proposition of gender discrimination is misplaced. A bench headed by Justice D. Y. Chandrachud and comprising Ajay Rastogi said there are two things that are required to remove any form of gender discrimination -- “administrative will and change in mindset.” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that women are better than men, and clarified that he did not contend that men cannot take commands from the women.

The court has reserved the order and asked all parties concerned to submit all notes and submissions by Friday. The court observed that it will consider applications of all women officers, who are in service and who aren’t, and the ones who are will be governed through the judgement. The court denied to pass separate orders. Counsel for the women petitioners argued that there is discrimination from the beginning, and they have not received the dues, an issue originating from discrimination. The counsel also added that Short Service Commission was introduced in 2006. The petitioner also cited the difference in training in the SSC and candidates who pass out from the Indian Military Academy, as they have permanent entry. This results in adjustment in seniority, as candidate move from the SSC to Permanent Commission. This adjustment ensures that they don’t surpass the ones who’ve come from the Indian Military Academy. The court observed that if the High Court were to be complied in this matter, then women would have been entitled to be considered for Permanent Commission.

2011. He was nominated by the President in 2012 to the Rajya Sabha. He, however, gained widespread attention by his passionate arguments in Ram Mandir case, while refusing to take a seat while arguing when he was offered one considering his age and following the conventional tradition of lawyers -- arguing while standing.

NEW

Ahead of the November 9 verdict on Ayodhya, Parasaran had said his last wish was to get a proper seating place for Ram Lalla legally. Parasaran participates with great interest and enthusiasm in advocating lawsuits related to Hindu deities. He was the advocate of Lord Ayyappa in the Sabarimala case before the Ram temple case.

He also contested the case of Ram Sethu during the UPA government. He is also known as ‘Advocate of Gods’ for taking up such cases. Vinod Bansal, spokesperson of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad told IANS that Parasaran is a true “Ram bhakt” who played an important role by “standing in court for hours and arguing in favour of the temple”.

Punjab claims to wipe out locust in two villages 0 The Punjab government here on Monday claimed to have wiped out locust from two villages in the Fazilka district along the Indo-Pak border. The nearly 12-hour operation was conducted in Roop-

nagar and Bareka villages under the supervision of the Fazilka Deputy Commissioner on directions from Financial Commissioner Development Viswajeet Khanna. Acting on Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s orders, Khanna

asked Agriculture Secretary K.S. Pannu to chalk out a strategy to combat the locust attack in the two villages, according to an official spokesperson. Khanna also asked the Fazilka Deputy Commissioner to per-

sonally supervise the operation. Later, the Deputy Commissioner held a meeting to review the plans with district officials. Sufficient quantity of insecticide was provided and boomer sprayers, tractor-mounted

high velocity sprayers and fire brigade vehicles were used in the operation. The Chief Minister has also taken up the locust attack issue in south Punjab areas, bordering Rajasthan, with Prime Minister Narendra

Modi. He has urged the Prime Minister to ask the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to raise the issue with Pakistan from where locust swarms were entering India.

Hailing budget by Sukhbir Badal brazen sycophancy: Punjab Chief Minister Chandigarh (IANS): Ridiculing Sukhbir Badal’s remarks

welcoming the Union Budget as pro-farmer and pro-poor,

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday termed

it a case of brazen sycophancy with nothing to substantiate the tall claims of the Akali chief. The Chief Minister wondered what Sukhbir had found to be positive for the farmers in the budget, which even agriculture experts and farmer bodies had rejected as totally bereft of any initiative to save the agrarian sector. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was blinded by power and could not see the problems faced by the farmers, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President was apparently so blinded by his sycophant love for the ruling party that he could see nothing wrong in their actions, said Amarinder Singh in a statement. Despite having three ministers in the Union Cabinet from the state, the BJP-Akali combine have failed to secure a debt relief scheme for the farmers, who continue to reel under massive debt burdens, not just in Punjab but across the country, the Chief Minister said. Questioning Sukhbir’s reaction hailing the Rs 15 lakh crore budgetary allocation for the agriculture sector, Amarinder Singh asked how the Akali

leader thought the mere 10 per cent increase over last year for agriculture and allied sectors to be sufficient to tackle the grave crisis faced by the debt-ridden farmers. With this measly allocation, which comes nowhere near meeting the needs of the farmers, how does Sukhbir hopes to see the farmers’ income getting doubled in the next two years, he asked. And without farmer uplift, there was no possibility of rural consumption going up, which would naturally scuttle economic growth even further, said the Chief Minister. Sukhbir’s refusal to acknowledge and admit that there is a serious crisis prevailing in the agriculture sector is symptomatic of the Akalis’ totally nonalienation from the grassroots, which was the root cause of their political demise in Punjab, the Chief Minister said. “How else can one explain Sukhbir’s complete failure to accept that his own state’s farmers are crying for help, which only the central government can provide?” he asked. Amarinder Singh said that while his government was do-

ing its best in Punjab, a holistic national policy, encompassing debt waiver, minimum support price (MSP) for all crops and diversification, etc. was the only long-term solution to the problem. Nothing has, unfortunately, been proposed in the budget to encourage crop diversification, despite the fact that buffer stocks of food grains are already putting the states and farmers under extreme stress, he said. Further, said the Chief Minister, there was nothing in the budget to ensure the procurement of alternative MSP crops, which was critical to promoting diversification and breaking the vicious wheat-paddy cycle that alone could alleviate the farmers’ woes and boost their income. Pointing to the exclusion of the water-stressed areas identified by the central government for its water conservation schemes, Amarinder Singh said it was time for Sukhbir and his colleagues to open their eyes to these problems, and to stop sacrificing Punjab and its people to their own political interests.

Union Budget pro-farmer: Sukhbir Badal Chandigarh (IANS): Hailing the Union Budget as pro-farmer and pro-poor, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday said that the common man would benefit due to reduced income tax liabilities in different slabs.

Relatives of undertrials who escaped from Amritsar Central Jail arrested Amritsar: The city police on Wednesday arrested the sister and brother-in-law of Gurpreet Singh and Jarnail Singh, two of the three undertrials who escaped the high-security Amritsar Central Jail on February 2, for sheltering and providing financial help to the trio after the jailbreak incident. The arrested accused are

Paramjit Kaur of Chohla Sahib and Sukhwinder Singh of Vain Poin village in Tarn Taran district. Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill said during the probe, the police found that Paramjit met her brothers on November 21, 2019, in the Central Jail. They told her that they would escape from the jail. The duo sug-

gested her to shift her rented house and arrange an accommodation for them. Paramjit left her rented place from Khadoor Sahib and took another house on rent at Chohla Sahib to shelter her brothers. The police claimed that Paramjit also discussed their plan with Sukhwinder. As per the plan, after escap-

ing from the Central Jail, the trio went to the same house in Chohla Sahib. The police said instead of informing them about the whereabouts of the accused, Paramjit and Sukhwinder gave them shelter and helped them escape. The Commissioner said the police would take the duo’s remand from the

Smugglers hired Afghan national for $50,000 to refine 200 kg of heroin Chandigarh: Afghan national Armaan Bashar, arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Punjab Police on Friday, had been hired by drug smugglers for $50,000 to refine 200 kg of heroin at an illicit unit in Sultanwind, Amritsar. While Bashar is the first such expert from Afghanistan to have been arrested in Punjab, investigators believe the gang led by Simranjit Singh Sandhu may have hired two more experts from the country earlier and dumped hundreds of kilograms of heroin in the domestic market or abroad. Six persons, including the Afghan national, were arrested in an operation led by ADGPcum-Director STF Harpreet Singh Sidhu to bust the illegal unit. The 35-year-old suspect, who had two wives and 14 children, wanted to make a quick buck to support his large family, he has told the investigating officials. “Almost everyone in my village, Achin, knows how to refine heroin,” he told the investigators, adding he was earning only a few thousands per month before the big ‘opportunity’ came along. Bashar told the investigators he used the ad-

vance given to him in Kabul to buy a smart phone, his first. He was supposed to finish the assignment in a month. Through his unidentified Afghanistan and Pakistan handlers, besides kingpin Sandhu, Bashar arrived in India on January 19 on gratis visa, given to Afghanistan nationals, for treatment of an alleged kidney ailment. “His medical examination has not substantiated his claim. He has not shown symptoms of kidney ailment,” said STF IG Kaustubh Sharma. Bashar and the previous experts from Afghanistan had set up the laboratory in one of the rooms of the 2 BHK house at Sultanwind. “They used to lock themselves in while refining the drug so that local smugglers or facilitators could not learn the trade,” said the IG. The police are yet to ascertain the source of the contraband. “We suspect the consignment came from Gujarat port since kingpin Sandhu uses this route to smuggle drugs from Pakistan. However, we are yet to confirm this,” said IG Sharma. The STF believes the heroin was refined for the European market. “It seems the motive was to refine heroin to intoxication value up to 61 per cent for use in European market.”

Union Budget pro-farmer

shi Udaan to transport agricultural goods to national and international destinations would give the much-needed boost to the vegetable and horticulture sector in Punjab. “Insurance cover to six crore farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna is also a pathbreaking step and will shield the farmers from the vagaries of nature,” Badal said

He said that farmers across the country, including Punjab, would benefit from the central government’s decision to go solar by subsidising 20 lakh standalone solar pumps. The former Chief Minister said that the decision to set up Kisan Rail through the PPP mode to transport perishable goods quickly as well as Kri-

court for further investigation. Notably, the police have been raiding on the hideouts of the undertrials, but no one has been arrested as yet. On February 2, three undertrials escaped the highsecurity Amritsar Central Jail by scaling the boundary walls. The three — one

accused of rape and the other two (both brothers) of theft and dacoity — escaped by making a hole in the wall of their barrack by removing about 10 bricks, officials said. The Chief Minister had ordered a magisterial probe to be led by Jalandhar Commissioner.

Ram Temple will be built by 2024-25, says VHP New Delhi (IANS): The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday said the construction of Ram Temple could be completed by 202425, hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of formation of a 15-member Trust that would oversee the construction of the temple in Ayodhya. Sources in the know of things said the outline of the

proposed two-storey Ram Temple has been prepared, and the work on the first floor is nearing completion. The carving of stones for the temple began after the Supreme Court verdict in November 2019. According to sources, 60 per cent work has been completed. VHP Executive President Alok Kumar said if the Trust follows the VHP model (of

temple), it may take 4-5 years to finish the construction. The VHP also said if the Trust initiates a fund-raising call, it would organise the process. On being asked about placing barricades around the Ram temple complex, Kumar said it is the job of the security personnel to take decision on issues related to security. “VHP would, however, like

Ramlalla to be seen by the people,” Kumar said. The VHP also said that along with the construction of Ram temple, structural development will have to be done for the convenience of pilgrims throughout Ayodhya. “The trust has to do all this work.” Since the Supreme Court an-

nounced its verdict, the work on carving the stones, ceilings, pillars in the workshop located near Karsevakapuram began, and 106 pillars have already come up. The temple will be prepared by dividing it into five parts. The first part will be the facade of the temple followed

by its doors. It will be followed by two pavilions. Ramlalla will be seated below, while Ram Durbar will be on the top floor. According to the inscription in the workshop, the height of the first floor will be 18 feet while that of second floor would be 15 feet 9 inches.

Imran Khan says India won’t reverse Kashmir decision New Delhi / Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday, for the first time, acknowledged the finality of the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir state and revocation of its special status by the Modi government. Though Prime Minister Khan described New Delhi’s move a “fatal mistake,” he said India “could not step back” from the decision that was taken on August 5 last year. He was speaking at a special session of the legislative assembly of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to express soli-

darity with Kashmiri separatists. Islamabad had designated the day as ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’. Pakistani media quoted Khan as saying, “On that day Modi made a fatal mistake, one that he could not step back from. Hopefully Kashmir will now move towards independence,” he added. Imran also acknowledged that the issue “drifted” after it was raised at the UN General Assembly, due to Maulana Fazlur Rehman-led sit-ins against his government last year, the Dawn reported.

Interestingly, Prime Minister of PoK Raja Farooq Haider warned Khan against accepting US President Donald Trump’s offer of mediation on the Kashmir issue. He argued that the mediation would favour India. “We are with you and will not let Pakistan’s flag come down in Kashmir,” Haider told Khan. Khan was accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and GilgitBaltistan Ali Amin Gandapur and chairman of special committee on Kashmir Syed Fakhar Imam.

Come to Daddy (PG) ***

Homecoming!

Love the one you’re with. Or at least try to. And make sure to keep in touch. A son winds up in quite the adventure when he receives a message from home in Come To Daddy. Perhaps better suited for that gloom and doom fall Halloween season nevertheless this 90 minute shocker from Mongrel Media is full value if you’re into a good old-fashioned scare. Go along and enjoy the vibe at Vancouver’s trendy Rio Theatre in hip Commercial Drive and don’t confuse this film with Mark Wahlberg’s Daddy’s Home or do so at your peril, Fans of Peter Jackson’s monumental Lord of the Rings saga may well be wondering whatever happened to the original cast. Young Elijah Wood resurfaces in a complete role reversal. Top billing goes to this lad who has now matured into quite a

fine adult actor. Here Wood stars as wayward urbanite Norval Greenwood. “ Summoned” to see his father after a long absence that long and winding road leads to a picture perfect home in remote wilderness. Just the kind of getaway suited to Harry and Megan being far from the maddening crowd, the prying press and prime for mystery, danger and - wait for it - murder! Face to face meetings can be dramatic. Out In the woods Norval learns the hard way that there may be danger around every

corner. So what was supposed to be an amicable reunion turns out to be a descent into hell. Director Ant Timpson makes his feature film debut and he pulls off a wicked dark tinged horror fantasy sure to make your skin crawl. Bolstered by gorgeous cinematography highlighting Tofino and Vancouver plus lots of very salty crude language befitting these wacko folks Come to Daddy is a guilty pleasure that’s creepy and surreal. You feel a sense of claustrophobia as the tension ramps up in this winner take all fight for survival.

Every 2020 TITAN is powered by a 5.6-litre Endurance® V8 gasoline engine rated at 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Both horsepower and torque ratings are the best in class. Genesis Shares Images of Its First GV80 SUV

SEOUL, South Korea: Genesis recently shared the first official images of the GV80, the first sport-utility vehicle for the brand. The muchanticipated, three-row (available) GV80 will become the fourth model in the Genesis lineup, joining the G70, G80, and G90 sedans. Like its sedan siblings, GV80 will be based on a rearwheel-drive platform unique to the Genesis brand; all-wheel drive will be standard in the Canadian market. The “V” in the GV80 marque represents versatility that only a Genesis SUV can offer. “Over the last four years, Genesis has established itself as a respected luxury brand with superior vehicle quality and a lineup of class-leading sedans with charismatic and discriminating style,” said William Lee, Executive Vice President and Global Head of the Genesis Brand. “With the launch of GV80, Genesis will elevate expectations for excellence within the luxury SUV market.” The first images of GV80, which will be supplemented in coming weeks by product details, provide a complete picture of the first SUV created by Genesis Design. The interior and exterior styling of GV80, a development of the GV80 Concept introduced at the 2017 New York auto show, was a collaboration between Genesis Design studios located in South Korea, the

United States, and Germany. “GV80 allows us to expand our definition of Athletic Elegance design language to a new typology, while retaining sublime proportionality and sophistication of form,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Executive Vice President, and Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group. Signature Genesis design elements are immediately visible on GV80, from every vantage point. Surrounded by the high-tech Quad Lamps, the Crest Grille emphasizes gravitas consistent with the positioning of GV80. The Parabolic Line runs smoothly along the side with precise execution, accentuated by power lines above each wheel emphasizing stance and presence. Sang Yup Lee, Senior Vice President, Head of Genesis Design added “The Quad Lamp, our design signature, introduces an unmistakable visual impression completely unique to Genesis.” The G-Matrix pattern that appears in light fixtures throughout the exterior, as well the design of the wheels, is inspired by beautiful orchids seen when diamonds are illuminated by light. The interior focuses on the beauty of open space, characteristic of the elegant South Korean architectural aesthetic. Minimalism is in the details, with a commanding driving position surrounded by high mounted control surfaces. The slim air vents stretch across the front to highlight the width of the cabin featuring minimal physical buttons with the new touch screen climate control. The center console is equipped with a jewel-like, rotating electronic gear selector, providing an exquisite balance of simplicity and glamour. Set to launch globally in 2020, GV80. More details will be provided closer to launch.
