President Donald Trump addresses the nation on Wednesday. Official White House photo by Shealah Craighead US President Donald Trump has said Iran “appears to be standing down” after it fired missiles at air bases housing US forces in Iraq. Trump, in a televised address from the White House, said no US or Iraqi lives were lost in the attacks and the bases suffered only minimal damage. The Irbil and Al Asad bases were attacked early on Wednesday local time. Iran said it acted in retaliation after the assassination of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani last week. The US drone strike targeting him and Iran-backed militia figures in the Iraqi capital Baghdad was a major escalation amid already deteriorating relations between Iran and the US. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei described the missile attacks as a “slap in the face” for the US and called for an end to the American presence in the Middle East. On Wednesday evening at least two rockets fell in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, where
the US embassy is located. There were no reports of any damage or casualties. The US attack on Soleimani killed members of pro-Iranian Iraqi militias, who have also said they would seek revenge. Trump has previously threatened military action against Iran if it were to target US personnel and bases, but he did not announce any military action, saying Iran’s attack had caused no casualties. “No Americans were harmed in last night’s attack by the Iranian regime,” he said. “Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned,” he added. He also said that “American strength, both military and economic, is the best deterrent”. “The fact that we have this great military and equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it.” Trump also said the US would immediately impose additional financial and economic sanctions on Iran, which would remain until it “changed its behaviour”. “Iran must abandon its nuclear
ambitions and end its support for terrorism,” he said. “The civilised world must send a clear and unified message to the Iranian regime. Your campaign of terror, murder and mayhem will not be tolerated any more. It will not be allowed to go forward.” A total of 16 missiles were launched from at least three sites in Iran, Defence Secretary Mark Esper said. At least 11 of them struck the air base in Al Asad, west of Baghdad, and at least one more hit the Irbil base, he said. Several other missiles landed at some distance from the targets. The attacks happened at about 02:00 local time on Wednesday. Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley said he believed early warning systems had prevented casualties. “[What] I believe, based on what I saw and what I know, is that they were intended to cause structural damage, destroy vehicles and equipment and aircraft, and to kill personnel,” he said. The attacks came just hours
after the burial of Soleimani, who controlled Iran’s proxy forces across the Middle East. It was the most direct assault by Iran on the US since the seizing of the US embassy in Tehran in 1979. The assassination of Soleimani head of the Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force and architect of Iranian policy in the region - took place on January 3. The general was regarded as a terrorist by the US government, which says he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops and was plotting “imminent” attacks. Iran vowed “severe revenge” for his death. Trump, meanwhile, warned the US would respond in the event of retaliation “perhaps in a disproportionate manner”. Millions of Iranians turned out for the commander’s funeral, with mourners chanting “death to America” and “death to Trump”. A stampede at the burial in Soleimani’s hometown Kerman killed 50 people and injured 200 more on Tuesday.

Violence sweeps JNU campus; many students, teachers injured New Delhi (IANS): Unprecedented violence was seen in the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday as several masked individuals, both male and female, thrashed students, including girls, and teachers inside the campus with wooden and metal rods, injuring many. While the number of the injured in the various clashes which occurred through the day was not yet known, at least 20 students were admitted to the AIIMS with severe injuries following the evening clash. They included two officebearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh – who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod, received severe injuries. “I have been brutally beaten up by masked people. I don’t know who they were,” Ghosh said as she broke into tears while blood flowed profusely from her head. JNUSU General Secretary Satish Chandra was also injured in the attack. JNUSU Vice President Saket Moon accused the RSSaffiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad of leading the attack, which was bolstered by outsiders. Hostel rooms, and lobbies, and vehicles standing on the road were vandalised during the assault. There were terrifying moments for students as the masked men and even women with faces covered, barged into hostels, ran-

sacked rooms and beat up the frightened students. A girl student recounted those moments in tears: “I was in the room and I heard loud noises and I saw many girls coming. I asked everyone to lock their rooms. We were in terror. While I was trying to take a video clip, they hit me with a stone.” On the other hand, the ABVP blamed Left-affiliated students for earlier attack on its activists that had left several injured. The JNU administration summoned the police which deployed in the campus and prohibitory orders were imposed. Four goons were nabbed from the varsity’s main North Gate late on Sunday. Both groups also reached the Vasant Kunj police station late night to file complaints over the violence. While eyewitnesses maintained that the flare-up could have been averted if
the police had taken action on time, Special Commissioner of Police, R.S. Krishnaiah said that the police entered the campus only on the varsity administration’s request following the clash. Union Home Minister Amit Shah ordered the Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take all necessary action to control the situation in the campus. He also ordered an inquiry. The violence was condemned by leaders across the political spectrum. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar – both JNU alumni – on Sunday condemned the violence. “Horrifying images from JNU- the place I know and remember was one for fierce debates and opinions but never violence. I unequivocally condemn the events of today. This government, regardless of

what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students,” Sitharaman, who did her MPhil from JNU, said in a tweet. Jaishankar, who has an MA in Political Science and an MPhil and PhD in International Relations from JNU, also took to Twitter to express his reaction. “Have seen pictures of what is happening in JNU. Condemn the violence unequivocally. This is completely against the tradition and culture of the university,” he tweeted. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who reached the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to meet the injured JNU students, later said, in a tweet, that there was “something deeply sickening about a government that allows and encourages such violence to be inflicted on their own children”. Her brother and former party chief Rahul Gandhi attacked the Central government. “The brutal attack on JNU students & teachers by masked thugs, that has left many seriously injured, is shocking. The fascists in control of our nation, are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today’s violence in JNU is a reflection of that fear. #SOSJNU,” he said, in a tweet. CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, also a former JNUSU leader, also condemned the violence, and the party’s student wing, the Students Federa-
tion of India, called for a nationwide protest on Monday. CPI-M leader Brinda Karat also reached the AIIMS to meet the injured students. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also said he was shocked by the violence. Jamia students reached the Delhi Police HQ at ITO to protest, while the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association called upon all sections of society to condemn the “heinous act”. In Kolkata, Ghosh’s “scared” father, said with the current volatile situation, even he could be beaten up any time. Her mother demanded the JNU Vice Chancellor’s resignation and affirmed she won’t ask her daughter to back out of the protests. Former Union Human Resource Development Secretary R. Subrahmanyam, who was recently transferred to the Social Justice Ministry allegedly over his position on the JNU students protests against the fee hike, demanded “immediate action against the hooligans”. The BJP also condemned the violence, but called it a “desperate attempt by forces of anarchy” misleading students to achieve their own political goals. On Tuesday, protests intensified on Kolkata streets against the violence in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, as students, celebrities and Left politicians matched steps. They also opposed the new citizenship law and a proposed
nationwide NRC. A large number of cultural personalities and literary figures joined a huge march convened by students of various colleges and universities from the academic hub College Square to the Tagore house in Jorasanko - the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore. Film director Aneek Dutta, theatre personality Kaushik Sen, actors Ushoshi Chakraborty, Riddhi Sen, Chandan Sen, singer Rupankar Bagchi and poet Mandakranta Sen walked alongside thousands of students. At the rear of the procession were CPI-M politburo members Mohammad Salim and Biman Bose. Some of the participants wore masks in a token protest against the masked attackers in JNU. “The RSS-BJP are now scared, the Modi government is scared now. So they now seem hassled,” said Kaushik Sen. Said Riddhi Sen: “We want an answer for the violence perpetrated on JNU students. Our weapon against every blow of iron rod on (JNUSU President) Aishe Ghosh is rationalism and logical reasoning.” Aneek Duttta said students are the future, and when they come under attack, one cannot but protest. Students of Jadavpur University and some other educational institutions took out a protest march from South Kolkata’s Hazra to Central government Office complex Nizam Palace.

St Stephens joins university stir, slam attempts to create ‘Hindu Rashtra’
New Delhi (IANS): Delhi University’s premier college, St Stephens, has joined the nationwide stir in university campuses against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the National Register of Citizens and the National Population Register. According to a post, students and faculty members in large numbers came together on Monday to discuss and plan “long term resistance” to the CAA, NRC and NPR. “Of utmost importance is to realize that the approval of these provisions aren’t isolated actions but steps towards the Sangh’s vision of a Hindu Rashtra,” the post said denouncing in words what is usually said by Opposition parties. “The abrogation of Article 370 in August and the internet suspension in Kashmir is not to be forgotten either; Kashmiris continue to face innumerable human rights violations and suspension of civil rights,” it added. “Further, we must keep in mind the condition of the working class of the country who continue to suffer the consequences of a negligent gov-
ernment that doesn’t care about fixing rampant unemployment and poverty,” St Stephens’ students and faculty said, criticizing the economic policies of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. “Government is committed to distracting the populace from the economic crisis it has created and is now abjectly failing to deal with; the students and professors of St Stephens will not stand by and tolerate the marginalisation of the people’s real needs and interests,” the post said, blaming the Modi government for trying to distract from the economic woes facing the country. “The unleashing of unabashed terror in universities like JNU, Jamia and AMU and the passing of divisive legislation like CAA seeks to destroy the secular character of India and the right to dissent that is intrinsic to any genuine democracy. The exercise of this right is an intrinsic aspect of university campuses. We wholeheartedly the necessity of dissent on campuses and refuse to
Supreme Court to examine plea seeking reservation for Dalit Christians
New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to look into a plea seeking directions to the Centre to allocate benefits given to Scheduled Castes to Christians having a Scheduled Castes origin. A bench, headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant, issued notice to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, the National Commission for Minorities and the Registrar General of India and sought the Centre’s response within two weeks, as it tagged the plea with other similar matters. The plea also sought the Scheduled Castes community should be made religion neutral. According to the plea, a Scheduled Caste person admitting a religion different from Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism should not be deprived from the benefit by Paragraph 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, which restricts Christians of Scheduled Castes origin from availing the Scheduled Castes status. This restriction is against the fundamental right
to equality, religious freedom and non-discrimination, it said. The plea sought allowing and extending the Scheduled Castes status to Christians of Scheduled Castes Origin for availing special privilege in education, scholarships, employment, welfare measures, panchayat elections, legislative assemblies up to Indian Parliament and for availing the legal remedy/protection under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention) of Atrocities Act, 1989 amended in the year 2018. The court was hearing the plea filed by the National Council of Dalit Christians (NCDC) seeking Scheduled Caste status for Dalit Christians. “The non-inclusion of Christians in Paragraph (3)A of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, along with Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism, is discriminatory and violative of Articles 14, 15, 16 and 25 of the Constitution”, said the plea. The plea said social exclusion does not disappear with the change in and caste hierarchy continues to exist within Christianity, despite the religion forbidding it.

Meanwhile, a host of Bollywood personalities came out in support of actress Deepika Padukone for visiting the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus here to express solidarity with students there. After Deepika’s visit to the campus on Tuesday evening, actress Sonakshi Sinha tweeted on Wednesday: “No matter which political party you support, do you support violence? Don’t vi-

Imran Khan condemns attack on Nankana Sahib Gurdwara; main suspect arrested
Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday said that the recent attack on the on Nankana Sahib gurdwara in Punjab province goes against his “vision and will find zero tolerance and protection from the government including police and judiciary”. On Friday, the Gurdwara Nankana Sahib was attacked by a huge Muslim mob while Sikh
devotees were stuck inside the shrine. The mob that had gathered outside raised communal and hateful slogans against the minority community and pelted stones on the shrine, videos circulated on social media showed. Pakistani sources said the mob was led by the family of Mohammed Hassan, the man who had abducted and converted a
Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur, to protest police action against him. Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Khan said: “The major difference between the condemnable Nankana incident and the ongoing attacks across India on Muslims and other minorities is this: the former is against my vision and will find zero tolerance and protection from the government including
police and judiciary.” The suspect also posted the In a statement issued late Frireligious slur on social media day, the Pakistan Foreign Office after which the local adminhad clarified that the incident istration took action on Prime in Nankana Sahib was the reMinister Imran Khan’s directive sult of an “altercation between and arrested Imran, who was two Muslim groups” and that leading the protest on Januit should not be portrayed as a ary 3 in the birthplace of Guru communal issue. High Commission in New Delhi. Sikh youth murdered in Pakistan New Delhi / Peshawar (IANS): Two days after the Nankana Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan’s Punjab province was attacked by a Muslim mob, a member of the Sikh community, Parvinder Singh, was murdered in Peshawar by ‘unknown’ gunmen. Sources based in Peshawar told IANS that Parvinder Singh was the younger brother of a local journalist Harmeet Singh. A businessman in Malaysia, Parvinder was in Peshawar to shop for his wedding in February, Harmeet told the media. Anguished by the murder of his brother, Harmeet added that “without minorities, no country can flourish and progress. Pakistan is beautiful because of minorities but each year, we end up carrying the dead on our shoulders”. Pakistan, he said, gets massive funds from several countries to protect minorities. “But there is no protection. That’s why I am here to carry my dead brother’s body today. I won’t rest until the Pakistani government books the murderers of my brother,” he added. Religious minorities especially Sikhs in Pakistan have already been complaining of insecurity and fear since the attack on the birthplace of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru. A Muslim mob led by the family of a man who had abducted and forcibly converted a Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur, pelted stones at Nankana Sahib, trapping Sikh devotees inside the shrine. While India strongly condemned the attack, both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition led by the Congress protested outside the Pakistan
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday expressed grief over the killing of Parvinder Singh. “Shocked & anguished over killing of Sikh youth Ravinder Singh in Pakistan, coming on heels of Nankana Sahib Attack,” he tweeted. Asking the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan government to ensure thorough investigation and strict punishment for the culprits, he said: “This is the time to act on what you preach.” India on Sunday slammed Pakistan over the killing of Parvinder Singh. “India strongly condemns the targeted killing of minority Sikh community member in Peshawar that follows the recent despicable vandalism and desecration of the holy Gurdwara Sri Janam Asthan at Nankana Sahib and the unresolved case of abduction, forced conversion and marriage of a Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement. The MEA has asked the Pakistan government to take immediate actions to apprehend and give exemplary punishment to the perpetrators. “India calls upon the Pakistan government to stop prevaricating and take immediate action to apprehend and give exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of these heinous acts,” the statement said. It also lashed out at the Pakistani government for interfering in India’s internal affairs. In fact, in a tweet on Sunday, Imran Khan veered towards criticism of the Narendra Modi-led government while condemning the Nankana Sahib incident. The MEA said: “The government of Pakistan should act in defence of their own minorities instead of preaching sermons about it to other countries.”

Punjab to set up seven fast-track courts for rape cases
rinder Singh. The measures are in line with the Chief Minister’s commitment to ensure full safety for women and child safety in the state, said an official spokesperson after the cabinet meeting. The Cabinet has approved setting up of seven fast-track courts, with the creation of 70 posts to manage them, for dealing exclusively with the rape cases. Four of these courts will be set up in Ludhiana and one each at
Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ferozepur. Seven additional posts of additional and district sessions judges along with 63 supporting staff have been approved by the Cabinet, according to an official spokesperson. The courts, to be set up at an approximate annual expenditure of Rs 3.57 crore [1 crore = 10 million], will be effectively implementing the provisions of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2018 to deal with the pending rape cases expedi-
tiously. They will bring down the pendency of such cases, thereby facilitating adherence to the two-month timeline for conclusion of trial in rape cases. In another decision, the Cabinet approved creation of 45 posts for setting up three special and exclusive courts for trying offences under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) at
an approximate expenditure of Rs 2.57 crore per year. In addition to the amendment in Section 173 of Cr.Pc in 2018, requiring trial of rape cases to be completed within two months, the Supreme Court had desired that the state should set up exclusive courts for trial of rape cases against children, where the pendency of such case is more than 100. At present, the pendency of
5
rape cases against children in Ludhiana is 206 and 125 in Jalandhar. Accordingly, the Cabinet approved establishment of two special courts in Ludhiana and one in Jalandhar to exclusively try rape cases against children. The Cabinet gave the go-ahead for setting up 10 family courts in 10 districts of the state, at an approximate annual expenditure of Rs 5.55 crore.

Brar, one of the youngest mountaineers in the country, had scaled Mt Everest at the age of 16 years 9 months on May 21, 2013, while Singh was involved in a number of cross-border operations and was instrumental in eliminating terrorists in surgical operations conducted by the 9 PARA Special Force. Brar’s appointment as DSP would go a long way
in encouraging adventurous sports in the state, besides felicitating and providing better opportunities to outstanding achievers in their respective field of sports, the Cabinet felt. In the case of Singh, the Cabinet decided to relax the Punjab Police Services Rules, 1959, to enable his direct recruitment as DSP. In recognition of his outstanding services in Indian Army, the Punjab Police Department had desired to utilise his services, especially amid efforts by terrorists to revive militancy in the state. Singh awarded Sena Medal (Gallantry) by the President in 2017.

Punjab Chief Minister for strict action against all behind JNU violence Chandigarh (IANS): Demanding strictest of action against the perpetrators of the violent mayhem in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), irrespective of their political affiliation or ideology, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday asked the Centre and the Delhi governments to stop indulging in blame games over the issue, and ensure urgent
restoration of law and order in the premier university. The Chief Minister lamented the unprecedented attacks and clashes witnessed in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Jamia Milia Islamia and JNU in recent weeks, saying these incidents had not just marred the country’s international image but had caused irrevocable damaged to its education system -- one
of the key pillars of any nation’s progress and development. In a hard-hitting statement that blamed the Central government, the Delhi government as well as Delhi Police for the unbridled and vicious attacks on students in JNU on Sunday night, Amarinder Singh said such unruly scenes were unparalleled in independent India.

“Where was Delhi Police when armed goons had a free run of the university campus, indulging in brutal attacks on students, staff and teachers?” he asked. “Why did the police force, which had been ruthless in its actions when trouble had broken out in Jamia some days back, suddenly decide to stay back in the case of JNU? Whose orders were they acting on?” Amarinder Singh was also unsparing in his criticism of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. “How could he not rush to the spot? Was it enough for him to simply tweet his anguish? As Chief Minister, and more importantly as someone who claims to be the
custodian of the welfare of Delhi’s citizens, why did he not intervene personally?” he said. The shocking lawlessness that emerged from JNU made a mockery of India’s claim to be a mature democracy, and marked the total failure of every institution responsible for the safety of the people of Delhi, said Amarinder Singh, lashing out at the BJP-led government at the Centre, the AAP government in Delhi and Delhi Police, who stood as mute spectators. Endorsing the demand raised by some individuals for the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the developments in JNU, the Chief Minister said it was necessary to identify and act against not
just the assailants behind what appeared to be a preplanned attack but also those who became co-conspirators by virtue of allowing it to continue unabated. If this kind of incident goes unpunished in the national capital, one can only imagine what could happen in educational institutions in other parts of the country, he warned. The Chief Minister called upon all like-minded people to rise to the occasion and fight against the forces that were hell-bent on destroying India’s glorious status as a progressive and liberal democracy, founded on the Constitutional principles of unity, amity and secularism.
BJP will have to pay for stubbornness on CAA: Amarinder
Chandigarh (IANS): Taking former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan head on over the threat of the Centre implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act at any cost, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said the BJP would have to pay a heavy price for such stubbornness. An elected government which refuses to heed the voice of its people or respond to their anger is bound to lose their confidence and collapse, said the Chief Minister, adding the BJP’s stance on the issue “smacked of a dangerously fascist approach that would lead to their eventual downfall”. As far as his government was concerned, “there was no way it would allow the brazenly divisive Act to be implemented in Punjab”, Amarinder Singh said. “You cannot force us to do so,” he said, even as he reiterated that neither he nor the Congress was against grant of citizenship of persecuted minorities in other countries, such as Sikhs in Pakistan, but were completely opposed to the discrimination in the
CAA against certain religious communities, including the Muslims. Despite the nationwide public outrage over the controversial CAA, the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was refusing to acknowledge the unconstitutionality of the legislation, said the Chief Minister, lashing out at Chouhan for his “shockingly inconsiderate remarks on the issue”. It was obvious that Chouhan, like other BJP leaders, had no inkling of the implications or consequences of the CAA, nor did he apparently want to understand it, said Amarinder Singh in a reaction to the comments made by Chouhan in Ludhiana a day earlier. Chouhan had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, nor had he bothered to study the Act, which has triggered massive public protests across the country, said Amarinder Singh, adding that the protests were not “the brainchild of the Congress or any other party, as Chouhan was claiming, but the result of a spontaneous outrage among Indians cutting across religious and party lines”.

AAP scanning MLAs performance, may add new faces in Delhi New Delhi (IANS): Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is examining the performance of its sitting MLAs, ahead of redistribution of tickets for the February 8 Assembly elections. According to party sources, the “report card” of each MLA is being prepared by the party. “We are conducting the performance survey on various levels of each MLA. It will be too early to say anything about the survey,” a party leader said. The surveys, according to the leader, is being done on the MLA’s performance, popularity and image. “It is very important to know what the people
are thinking about its leader. We will not repeat the faces, if the leader has not worked or have bad image.” The leader, associated with the survey, also said that party is simultaneously hunting for new faces. “We are likely to release the list by mid-January. The work is underway in full swing,” said a party leader adding that the party’s priority is with the common man. The city will go to polls on February 8, as the tenure of Arvind Kejriwal as the Chief Minister is ending next month. In the 2015 polls, while the AAP bagged 67 of 70 seats, the BJP got the remaining three.
The AAP has disqualified five of its MLAs since August 2019 from the Delhi Assembly. While Anil Kumar Bajpai, Col. Devinder Sehrawat and Kapil Mishra were disqualified for their association with the BJP, Sandeep Kumar was disqualified for having connections with the BSP and Alka Lamba was disqualified after she joined the Congress. The party will have to hunt for new faces for close to 10 seats. “We have to look for new faces for these seats and we have people in mind,” the leader said refusing to reveal the names. The party is also likely to use some of its Lok Sabha candidates. While the Congress is try-
ing to regain the power over which it had control for 15 years, the AAP is looking for a comeback. The BJP too is trying very hard as it has not been in power in the national capital since 1998. While the AAP is using Kejriwal’s face for the post of Chief Minister, the BJP and Congress are yet to announce their CM faces. The lists of the candidates are expected by mid-January, around the same time the notification of the elections will also be released. The city will go to polls in one phase on February 8 and the counting will take place on February 11.
BJP loses RSS bastion Nagpur, four other Zilla Parishads Nagpur (Maharashtra) (IANS): The Congress-Nationalist Congress Party combine handed a humiliating defeat to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the elections to the prestigious Nagpur Zilla Parishad -- the home turf of Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh -- officials said here on Wednesday. Besides Nagpur, the BJP was vanquished in Palghar, Nandurbar and Washim, was neck-to-neck with Congress in Dhule, while the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) bagged surprise control of Akola Zilla Parishad (ZP). Of the total 332 seats for which voting was held in six ZPs, the BJP bagged 103, Congress 73, NCP 46, Shiv Sena 49, VBA 42, while Independents and others secured 14 seats. In the 58-seat Nagpur ZP for which polls were held, the Congress bagged 30, the NCP 10, while the BJP managed only 15 seats. The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ally Shiv Sena chose to contest alone in Nagpur ZP and had to be content with just one seat, while two seats were won by Independents and others in this prestigious local body. In Palghar ZP of 57 seats, the Sena got 18, NCP 14 and BJP 12, while five seats went to CPI(M), three to Independents. The Congress bagged only one seat. However, the BJP had reason to smile in Dhule where out of the 56 seats, it secured 39, followed by Congress at seven, Sena four and NCP three, besides three Independents. In Nandurbar, there was a neck-to-neck fight for the 56 seats in which BJP and Congress got 23 apiece, Sena seven and the NCP three. The BJP suffered a jolt in Washim ZP where of the total 52 seats, the party got only seven, NCP bagged 12, Congress nine, Sena six, VBA 15 while Independents bagged three seats. The VBA -- which had failed to open its account in the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections -- has bagged the 53-seat Akola ZP with 22 seats, followed by Sena at 13 seats, NCP four, Congress three and Independents four. The elections for the 58 Zilla Parishad seats and 116 Panchayat Samitis were held on January 7 and the results were declared on Wednesday. Even in the six Panchayat Samiti (PS) polls, there was a shock in store for the BJP which bagged only 194 out of the total 664 seats for which elections were held. The Congress bagged a handsome 145 seats, Shiv Sena 117, NCP 80, VBA 78, Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena two, CPI(M) 12, CPI one, Independents and others 34.

Among the highlights was Congress’ Mahendra Dongre winning the seat in Dhapewada -- the native village of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Congress’ Nana Kambale dealt another blow by bagging the Koradi seat -- the hometown of former BJP minister Chan-
drashekhar Bawankule. Salil A. Deshmukh, the son of NCP’s state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, won from Metpanjara while another senior NCP exminister Ramesh Bang’s son Dinesh R. Bang bagged the Hingna seat. The Nagpur ZP and several other local bod-
ies were under the control of the BJP-Sena when they were allies, till the Sena joined the MVA with Congress-NCP in November 2019. The BJP’s defeats came despite a high-profile campaign launched by a battery of topnotch state leaders for all these civic bodies.

‘Chhapaak’ Review: Deepika Padukone-Vikrant Massey’s film isn’t easy to watch & that is exactly why you should go for it Malti (Deepika Padukone), an acid attack survivor files a PIL against the sale of acid. She is also fighting for justice after being attacked by a man when she was in her teens. Malti joins Amol’s NGO which fights against acid violence. Review: Deepika Padukone will step into the shoes of an acid attack survivor. When this was first announced, I was waiting with bated breath to see how will she be looking and then came the first look. I was shaken, my first reaction was, ‘Wow’! Then what intrigued me was the title ‘Chhapaak’. I googled the meaning and it meant ‘splash’. It hit me so hard when I concluded what it meant to have your face destroyed with just one splash. Chhapaak shows Malti seeking justice not just for herself but other acid attack survivors, whose faces were destroyed just because they said ‘no’ or dared to dream big. The film starts with a spirited woman Malti applying for jobs but is not successful in getting one. She readily works with an NGO run by Amol (Vikrant Massey) fighting against acid attack violence. We are suddenly taken to the moment when Malti was attacked and how much
thrilling experience with high emotional value. Chhapaak is not easy to watch and can shock you, make you cry and disturb you too. Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is a character in itself. The title track along with
time she took to fight and put the attacker behind the bars. For people who thought they changed the attacker from Muslim to Hindu, it was the former only. Not that religion was important here, because a fellow human’s life got destroyed for refusing advances by a man. However, it’s a four-year struggle and Malti witnesses a ray of hope. The film has many instances that are gutwrenching and you will also feel the pain and almost scream at the top of your voice. Meghna Gulzar showed those scenes with subtlety and she knew where to keep the background score and where it can be avoided. The scenes between Deepika and Vikrant are indeed breezy and the chemistry has come naturally. Moreover, Vikrant has done an amazing
its picturisation is heartbreaking which makes the film more painful. Though you feel that the film is marching towards a happy ending, no you will have a jaw-dropping moment in the climax. This film shouldn’t have
a happy ending because acid attacks continue in this country and the fight wouldn’t stop until they don’t. Verdict: Watch it for the beautiful and gutwrenching combination of Deepika and Meghna.
job and complemented Deepika well. His role as Amol was shown as an angry young man, who is constantly being told by Malti that victims or survivors can be happy and there’s nothing wrong in it. Vikrant is not someone who makes his ego acidic. He embraces the ideologies of the people around him. Talking about the lead star Deepika, the actor has taken a huge risk by producing the film and starring in it too. She is the soul of the film and its spine too. It was definitely worth a wait to see Deepika on the big screen after two long years. Coming to the editing, the film jumps from present to past to present and I just wished if the past was shown at once. The good thing about the film was it stuck to its genre of drama and yet gave a

2020 Cadillac XT4: Premium Crossover aims High dashboard design to display Cadillac’s excellent CUE infotainment system. Downsides are few, the XT4 is not as fast as some of its rivals, but all in all- is a very good premium Crossover.
By Autoreviewman Cadillac is on is journey of continuous improvement and refinement. Point in case in the new 2020 Cadillac XT 4, a compact, five - seater crossover built to take on the world’s best. In the flesh, the new XT4 is certainly a most handsome vehicle. Athletic, lithe, and taut-looking, the XT4 works as an example of the softer, less brash approach to styling for Cadillac; Engine wise, there is a 2.0-litre turbo I-4- 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder engine with 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-saving technology such as a cylinder deactivation – and an automatic engine stop/start function is also fitted. The transmission is a new nine-speed automatic unit with either FWD or AWD. Cadillac is offering different three different XT4 model trims in Canada. The base Luxury model at $35,298 offers as standard: Cadillac User Experience (CUE) infotainment system, with a rotary controller, Rear Park Assist, Haptic safety alert seats, Selectable drive modes, Forward Collision Alert, Front pedestrian braking and; low speed braking. The Premium Luxury trim ($43,298) ads: leather seats, forward and Rear Park Assist, Lane Change and Blind Side Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, interior ambient lighting and hands free tailgate. The Sport model ($43,298) comes with: a unique gloss black grille, gloss black window trim and roof rail accents. Also included are 18 -inch metallic finished wheels, interior carbon fiber or genuine wood decor and a sports steering wheel. The spacious upscale design of the XT4 cabin features a sleek dash design, a nice chunky three-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel with a new rotary infotainment controller. I liked the details such as the carbon fibre inserts on the doors. Plenty of technology features abound - in a quest to attract a younger breed of buyers to the Cadillac brand. There is: fast wireless device charging, four USB ports, a built-in 4G LTE WI-Fi hotspot Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smart phone capability. An eightinch touchscreen is well integrated into the
The equipment list and entry level price is very tempting! The pleasant road manners will satisfy both dyed in the wool Cadillac fans looking to downsize, and those new to the brand, who are

Parasite (PG) ***** Double Duty!
Nothing is what it seems. This is the template for a successful whodunnit or horror escapade. South Korea’s Parasite falls into the latter category and it hits all the right notes. After all you don’t win top awards at Cannes and The Golden Globes for nothing. Be sure to take in one of the best films of any year at The International Village Cinemas. What goes into making a good movie? Hollywood executives have been searching for the answer to this question for decades. Instead of spending a zillion dollars on tried and true and often tired super hero or franchise movies why not go the other route. How about a good story that is fresh and original, full of surprises and good acting. Parasite has got all this and more In spades. Sometimes the simplest most obvious stories make the best films especially under a talented director. Give it up to Bong Joon-Ho who hits the superfecta as writer, screenwriter, producer and director of this one of a kind bonafide thriller. As good as any Hol-
lywood made thriller Parasite is all about opportunism. How can a down on their luck jobless lower class working family from Korea headed by Ki-taek resist the temptation for success? No way when they come across the Parks, a wealthy family and thus begins a cat and mouse game that sees an elaborate plan concocted designed to slowly but surely generate substantial rewards. Totally oblivious to the bad intentions of their new help Parasite
continues to gnaw away at anyone and anything in its patch. Solid performances and a fresh uniquely original story that has that Walter Mitty feel to it make Parasite must see entertainment. Made in Korean let it be said that the English subtitles are easy to read and not distracting in any way. Even the horror element is mostly in the mind as the blood flow and gore is fleeting and restrained. Parasite is an eye-opener on all levels,
