Finance Minister Indra Nooyi under Trump administration’s consideration Jaitley diagnosed with rare cancer to head World Bank New York (IANS): IndianAmerican business leader Indra Nooyi, who headed the multinational PepsiCo, is under consideration for heading the World Bank, according to multiple media reports. If she is nominated by US President Donald Trump to be the Bank’s president, she will succeed Jim Yong Kim, a Korean immigrant who unexpectedly announced at the beginning of the year that he is quitting. By tradition, the US president names the head of the global financial institution and the nomination is rubber-stamped by the executive directors. Nominating Nooyi, an immigrant woman from a developing country, could head off the mounting challenges to the US role in determining the Bank’s presidency. She would also fit the bill for Trump’s preference for the private sector and for making international organisations fiscally more efficient. Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, who is an admirer of Nooyi and considers her as a mentor is said to be backing her for the Bank job, according to the media reports quoting anonymous administration sources. Nooyi stepped down as chairwoman of the PepsiCo last August after leading the international soft drinks, food and snacks giant for 12 years. When Nooyi was leaving Pepsico, Ivanka Trump called her an inspiration and a mentor and gushed, “I am deeply
grateful for your friendship. Thank you for your passionate engagement on issues that benefit the people of this country, and beyond.” Another Indian-American, Nikki Haley, who stepped down as the US Permanent Representative to the UN at the end of last year, is also on the list of candidates under consideration, according to The Financial Times. The former South Carolina governor was the first IndianAmerican to be on the US federal cabinet and she pushed the UN to cut its budget and enhance efficiency. If Nooyi, who headed a multinational with an annual revenue of $63.5 billion and assets of $79.8 billion, gets Trump’s nod, it will mark an ideological turnaround from former President Barack Obama’s orientation.
Departing from the tradition of economists or politicians heading the Bank, Obama appointed Kim, a medical doctor and academic, to reinforce the mission of fighting poverty and promoting what was considered a more holistic development. But Kim also advocated greater cooperation with the private sector for financing development, which Nooyi would strengthen if she gets the job. During her tenure PepsiCo, Nooyi led its reorganisation, shedding some parts of the conglomerate. The formal process of selecting the nominee to head the Bank is being overseen by a panel made up of Ivanka Trump, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and the president’s acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney. Although Trump has been critical of international organisations and called for curtailing their budgets, he had - at least openly - a close relation with Kim and backed increasing the Bank’s capital by $13 billion. Nooyi had a rocky start in relating to Trump: after his election she said that her employees were in “mourning.” She, however, drew close to Trump as he began pushing business-friendly policies and firmer ties to business leaders. Nooyi served on his business advisory council and has had dinners with him and other business leaders at his golf club in New Jersey.
New Delhi (IANS): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who left for the US for medical treatment, has been diagnosed with a rare kind of cancer and may not be able to present this year’s Interim Budget on February 1, sources said. Jaitley had left for the US on Sunday for what was believed to be a medical check-up relating to his kidney ailment. However, sources said he was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma, a rare type of cancer, and decided to go for treatment in New York. There was no word on when he was likely to return, but some sources said he was expected back on January 19, but others said it could be later. Jaitley, 66, had undergone a renal transplant surgery on May 14 last year. Officials have been tight-lipped about the trip which has come at a time when the Finance Ministry is busy with the preparations of the vote-on-account budget to be presented in the Lok Sabha on February 1 -- his sixth and the last by the BJPled NDA government in its current term. By convention, an interim budget normally does not contain fresh proposals, especially relating to taxation measures. But the coming vote-on-account budget may spring some surprises like increase in the exemption threshold for income tax assessees and some measures to address agrarian unrest. Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS last year in early April following which he underwent dialysis. He had a renal transplant surgery on May 14, 2018. In his absence, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal was given the additional charge of Finance Ministry on May 14. Jaitley stopped attending office at the beginning of April and was back in North Block - the seat of Finance Ministry - on August 23. Earlier, in September 2014, he underwent a bariatric surgery on account of severe diabetes.

Mukesh Ambani features in Foreign Policy’s 2019 list of top ‘100 Global Thinkers’ Mumbai (IANS): Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani has featured in Foreign Policy magazine's 2019 annual list of the top '100 Global Thinkers'. According to the magazine, Ambani, who displaced Jack Ma in 2018 as Asia's richest
man is credited with accelerating a smartphone internet revolution in the world's largest democracy. "With a fortune of $44.3 billion, Mukesh Ambani displaced Jack Ma in 2018 as Asia's richest man. Ambani's fortune comes from his holdings in the oil, gas, and retail
sectors, but he's likely to make his biggest impact on India through his new telecom venture Jio," the magazine said on its website. "By offering cellular data and voice free for the first six months after Jio's launch, Ambani got more than 100 million Indians to sign up-
accelerating a smartphone internet revolution in the world's largest democracy. The next stage of Ambani's plan is to use the digital airwaves to sell content and lifestyle products, eventually competing with Google and Facebook." Other prominent person-
alities in the list include Alibaba Co-founder and Executive Chairman Jack Ma, International Monetary Fund's Managing Director Christine Lagarde, European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager and Author and TV Host Fareed Zakaria.
Army chief warns Pakistan, says ready if war is forced New Delhi (IANS): Attacking Pakistan but not by name, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Tuesday said “our western neighbour” was ceaselessly supporting terrorists and warned that India will achieve “decisive success” if a war is forced on it.
“If our nation is forced into a situation of war, decisive success will be ours,” he said addressing the 71st Army Day parade here. Warning that security challenges will be more complex in future, the Army chief said: “There is a need to enhance our professional skills to deal with any danger.” Gen Rawat said that a new policy had been adopted on the border with China and the armies of the two countries told to maintain peace. Referring to action taken in the wake of unending firing by Pakistani troops, he said: “We have been giving a befitting reply to the enemies on the Line of Control (LoC) that has led to heavy loss of lives and logistics.” Accusing Pakistan of helping terrorists, Gen Rawat said: “I warn the enemy that we will not hesitate to take heavy action in reply to what they are doing against our country. “Not only is our neighbouring country supporting terrorism but it is also providing arms and facilitating training to terrorists. That country (Pakistan) has been included in the category of countries sponsoring terrorism.”
He said the Army’s anti-infiltration operations were on and would continue. On terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, the Army chief said his men had caused heavy losses to the militants with the help of other security agencies. Asserting that the Army was determined to crush terrorism, Gen Rawat said terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir were in a “hopeless” situation. “The result is that the terrorists are now threatening teenagers to take to arms in Jammu and Kashmir. We don’t want that terrorists continuously keep threatening citizens.” He said the situation in the northeastern states was “under control” and that focused intelligence based operations by Army and Assam Rifles were on. The Army was also training paramilitary forces and police in Maoist affected areas. Gen Rawat also talked about “revolution in military affairs” to make the war strategy modern. To deal with future challenges, he said the 1.9 million strong Indian Army had adopted the techniques of “collective” changes in weaponry and its “reorganisation” was on. “The aim of our capacity is being increased in a rapid way. Army’s modernization is being done. We have been successful in procuring new weapons and in the technique to work in darkness.” Gen Rawat said the Army had added projects like K-9 Vajra gun, Prahaar missile system, mine protected vehicles and Aakash missile system. The Army chief also advised soldiers and their families to use social media very carefully. The Army Day is celebrated to commemorate the day when Field Marshal M. Cariappa took over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher on January 15, 1949.

Life term for Gurmeet Ram Rahim, 3 others in journalist murder case Chandigarh (IANS): A special CBI court in Panchkula on Thursday sentenced Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to life imprisonment in the murder case of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati. The court also sentenced his three close aides, Krishan Lal, Kuldeep Singh and Nirmal Singh, who were also found guilty of the murder
NEW
of Chhatrapati in 2002, to life imprisonment. Ram Rahim’s life imprisonment will begin after the completion of the 20-year jail term in the rape cases for which he was convicted earlier. CBI counsel H.P.S. Verma told media that Ram Rahim will have to remain in prison for life following Thursday’s judgment.
Ram Rahim and the three others were convicted by the CBI court on January 11. All the four were convicted under Section 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The judgement came over 16 years after the murder of the journalist. “The punishment is satisfactory. We had to fight a lot to get him punished,” Anshul

Chhatrapati, son of the slain journalist told media after the sentencing. Ram Rahim is already lodged in Sunaria jail near Rohtak after his conviction on August 25, 2017 for the rape of two women disciples. He was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in the case. The judgement was delivered by judge Jagdeep Singh. The same judge had earlier convicted Ram Rahim in the rape case of two female disciples on August 25, 2017 and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on Ram Rahim and others. Ram Rahim and the three others were convicted by the CBI court on January 11. All the four were convicted under Section 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).The judgment came over 16 years after the murder of the journalist. Arguments of lawyers of the CBI, Chhatrapati’s family and the sect chief were held for over two hours. The sentencing came over two hours after that. The counsel for Ram Rahim pleaded for a lesser sentence, citing the social work being done by the sect. Ram Rahim appeared before the court through video conferencing from the Sunaria Jail near Rohtak where he is lodged. The other three convicts appeared through video-conferencing from the Ambala jail. Sources said Ram Rahim, 51, looked pale as he appeared before the court. Chhatrapati’s son Anshul had demanded capital punishment
for the disgraced self-styled godman. Chhatrapati, who edited a newspaper in Sirsa, was shot five times on October 24, 2002. He died later that year on November 21 in a hospital in New Delhi. He had published the letter of a ‘sadhvi’ (female disciple) of the sect, in which she had highlighted her sexual exploitation by the sect chief, in his local vernacular newspaper ‘Poora Sach’. The publication of the letter and other stories carried by Chhatrapati, which were critical of the activities of the sect and its chief, had upset Ram Rahim who asked his close aides to eliminate the journalist. Security was heightened in parts of Haryana and Punjab ahead of the sentencing. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court complex in Panchkula’s Sector 1, adjoining Chandigarh, was a virtual fortress on Thursday with strict checking of all people and vehicles coming to the area. Anti-riot police was present in strength outside the court complex. The local administration imposed Section 144 Cr.PC in the area to prevent the assembly of five or more people. The area around the Suna-
ria Jail near Rohtak, where Ram Rahim is lodged, was completely sealed by security personnel. Security was tightened in Haryana’s Sirsa town, around 260 km from here, where the sect’s headquarters is located. Haryana Police personnel and three companies of paramilitary forces were statioed around the sect campus. The Punjab Police had also taken preventive security measures in the neighbouring state as the sect has lakhs of followers in Bathinda, Mansa, Moga and Sangrur. Ram Rahim’s conviction on August 25, 2017, had led to violence in Panchkula and Sirsa, leaving 41 people dead and over 260 injured. The court on Wednesday allowed authorities in Haryana to produce the disgraced sect chief and three others before it through video-conferencing for their sentencing. Ram Rahim, who was patronized by political leaders and parties of Punjab and Haryana for nearly two decades due to his ability to shift votes of his followers, is now lodged in jail following his conviction on two counts of rape of his female disciples. The sect chief is also linked to the murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh (in July 2002). The matter is being heard by the CBI court. Ranjit Singh, who was believed to be privy to wrongdoing in the sect headquarters, was shot dead in July 2003. The sect chief suspected that Ranjit Singh was responsible for complaints of sexual exploitation of female disciples inside the sect campus coming out in the public.

Akalis playing games on Kartarpur corridor: Amarinder Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh recently said the ball was totally in the Centre’s court regarding the execution of the project for the Kartarpur corridor in Dera Baba Nanak area in Gurdaspur district. Accusing the leadership of the Shiromani Akali Dal of “playing games” on the Kartarpur corridor issue,
the Chief Minister said that it was the central government which had to take steps and release funds for the execution of the project in Punjab. Countering the claims of Union Minister and senior Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal that the Punjab government was not taking appropriate steps for the project, Amarinder Singh
said that the Minister was spreading falsehood. “The state government has already sent a reminder to the Ministry of Home Affairs 11 days ago. Harsimrat had once again put her foot in her mouth without doing her homework on the issue of extreme religious importance to the Sikh community, which she was trying to mislead with her false

statements,” he said in a statement here on Friday. The Akali Dal is part of the NDA government at the Centre. Harsimrat Kaur, wife of SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, is a Union Minister since 2014. “The fact of the matter was that a meeting was held on December 12 under the Chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Home Affairs, and Justice, Punjab, said the Chief Minister. At the meeting, representatives of the Ministry of Defence, Border Security Force (BSF), National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Bureau of Immigration and other stakeholders presented their views, based on which four different alignment options were proposed for the Kartarpur Sahib corridor, he said.
The Chief Minister said the project execution was a bilateral issue between the central and state governments and a response from the Home Ministry was awaited. He made it clear that any move to acquire land for the project can be initiated only after due approval from the Union government, “coupled with the flow of funds to acquire the required stretch of land”. “My government, and I personally, are very keen to ensure the completion of the project in time for the 550th Prakash Purb of Sri Guru Nanak Devji in November this year. The Akali leaders, including Harsimrat, are playing over such a sensitive issue,” he said. The Chief Minister said that his government would continue to pursue and pressur-
ize the central government to take the vital project to its logical conclusion by initiating development work at the earliest. “The state government would go all out to support the Centre to ensure the timely completion of the Kartarpur corridor project, which successive Congress governments at the centre and in the state had fought hard, through the years, to realize,” he added. The Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara is located around 4 km from Dera Baba Nanak town in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. Most of the work of the project has to be carried out inside Pakistan. Sikhism founder, Guru Nanak Dev (1469-1539), spent the last 18 years of his life in Kartarpur. A gurdwara is built at his final resting place.
British national gets bail in terror funding case Chandigarh (IANS): A Punjab court on Thursday granted bail to a British national in a terror funding case. The court in Faridkot granted bail as the Punjab Police failed to complete its investigation into the charges against Jagtar Singh Johal and another person, Taljit Singh, and submit its chargesheet within the stipulated period of 90 days. Johal, 32, was arrested by the Punjab Police in

November 2017 following accusations that he was involved in terror
funding in the state. The police claimed that Johal and others were behind the killings of Hindu leaders in Punjab in recent years and were providing funding for the same. Taljit Singh is a resident of Glasgow, Scotland. Johal’s arrest led to a lot of controversy in the UK and Canada with several leaders of Indian-origin demanding his release. Johal’s arrest came soon after he got married here.

Preventing deaths from influenza the flu virus strikes. But before medical attention is available, to start taking 2,000 mg of Medi-C Plus or any other powdered brand of vitamin C, every two hours until loose stools occur. It could make the difference between life and death. These brands are available in Health Food Stores. My advice to readers is the same, and to also get a second opinion. So, go to the internet and type in “Dr. F. R. Klenner and Vitamin C”. Dr. Andrew Saul, an international expert on vitamins, has an excellent article about Klenner who should have received the Nobel Prize for his research. It’s tragic that many doctors remain unaware of his discoveries that could save lives. See the new website on January 23. Online docgiff.com For comments info@docgiff.com
DEATH from influenza is always tragic. But it is particularly so when it occurs at a young age. This year an increasing number of influenza cases is being seen in emergency centers. And, as usual, thousands of North Americans will die from this seasonal disease. But are some dying needlessly? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. reports that, for the first time in 13 years, every state reports an increase in influenza caused by an aggressive virus. Authorities stress that the best way to decrease the number of cases of influenza and deaths has always been to get a flu shot. As Dr. Shobhit Maruti, officer of Health in Edmonton, Alberta, where deaths have occurred, stresses, “It’s never too late to be immunized as in 2018 this decreased the number of cases of influenza by 42 percent”. But history has shown that, although being vaccinated against influenza can prevent or decrease the severity, it is not always totally protective. So what other preventive measures are available? I have a high respect for viral killers, as one nearly ended my career as a surgeon. In 1950, in my final year at The Harvard Medical School, I developed poliomyelitis. I was in one of the great medical centers in the U.S. But in the next 24 hours doctors could not stop my legs and abdominal muscles from being totally paralyzed. How ironic that, if I’d been in a small town in North Carolina and treated by a family doctor, my paralysis could have been prevented. Equally ironic, none of my learned professors were aware of the doctor’s huge discovery. Dr. Frederick R. Klenner was not a trained virologist. But he was working in a ward of 60 polio patients. He decided to treat them with high doses of vitamin C for 10 days. Not one of the 60 patient developed paralysis! This discovery was reported in the journal, “Southern Medicine and Surgery” in Feb 1948. It’s appalling that it did not make headlines in the world’s newspapers or other medical journals. In fact, it fell on deaf ears, and even now is still largely unknown by doctors. In addition, Klenner later proved high doses of C could cure other viral diseases such as pneumonia, encephalitis, meningitis, measles and chicken pox. Klenner’s research showed that in addition to an annual flu shot, vitamin C provides additional protection. Particularly if you’ve been taking 4,000 milligrams (mgs) of C daily, long before influenza strikes. This keeps immune cells full of C to immediately fight the virus. So never forget the importance of this reservoir of C as infection immediately increases the need for more C. Klenner’s message to doctors was simple. If a serious infection strikes, but the cause is unknown, doctors should prescribe large doses of C while they’re pondering the diagnosis. And just as small doses of painkillers will not stop cancer pain, neither will small doses of C stop viral diseases. Ideally, for critical viral diseases, Klenner prescribed as much as 25,000 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C daily. But this is easier said than done. He also used intramuscular injections and oral tablets. But this means swallowing large numbers of pills. I’ve urged my family to never treat themselves if

Bollywood ‘squad’ meets PM Modi to discuss nation building
New Delhi (IANS): A delegation of young Hindi film actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, and filmmakers Karan Johar, Rohit Shetty and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Thursday to discuss how the entertainment industry can contribute to nation building. The ‘Prime Minister’s Squad’ -- as Shetty put it -- also included Ekta Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar. Karan called the meeting an “incredible opportunity”. “As a community, there is a huge interest to contribute to nation building. There is so much that we want to do, and can do. This dialogue was towards how and in what ways we can do that... “Together we would love to inspire and ignite positive changes to a transformative India,” Karan wrote on Instagram alongside a squad selfie with Modi. Karan thanked the government on behalf of the film industry for the GST reduction in movie ticket prices that was implemented recently. Movie tickets costing more that Rs 100 were
brought down from 28 to 18 per cent -- a move that was hailed by the industry. It was a result of two meetings held with the PM last year. While their past meetings drew ire for zero women representation, this time Alia, Ekta, Ashwiny and Bhumi lent the woman power. Tiwari, who directed “Nil Battey Sannata”, said in a statement: “It was an honour meeting our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji with inspiring lovely friends. An interaction that takes storytelling to new heights... Building a better society through entertainment. Thank you for the GST reduction and space to connect thoughts.” Bhumi tweeted: “Thank you for your time honourable Modi sir. Truly a moment to be remembered.” Ranveer was all smiles as he posed while hugging Modi. “Jaadoo ki Jhappi! Joy to meet the Honourable Prime Minister of our great nation,” tweeted the
‘Padmaavat’ star. Rajkummar said it was an “insightful meeting”, while ‘Uri’ actor Vicky was “happy and honoured” to meet the PM and Sidharth wrote:
“Thank you Narendra Modi sir for an enriching and insightful conversation. It was an honour to meet you today and we are grateful for your support towards the film industry.”
No political agenda behind ‘The Accidental PM’ release: Anupam Kher Mumbai (IANS): Actor Anupam Kher, who plays former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in “The Accidental Prime Minister”, has said the makers of the film have no political agenda behind its release. Anupam spoke at the Bombay Stock Exchange along with the presenter of the film Jayantilal Gada here on Friday. “The Accidental Prime Minister”, directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte and based on an eponymous book by Sanjaya Baru, is the first release of the year 2019. Asked if the general audience will be able to connect with the film, Anupam said: “There is excitement among people that I am playing role of a former Prime Minister of India, but at the end of the day, it’s a film which speaks, so the audience will decide whether this film will work or not at the box office.” Anupam said the makers have put in a lot of sincerity in the project. “We have made this film with a lot of sincerity and we don’t have any political agenda behind the release of the film. Akshaye Khanna earlier made a really good statement that this film will make people debate and not a controversy. “In 35 years of my acting career, I haven’t worked hard the way I have worked for this film. I am really happy that the Bombay Stock Exchange invited us over here,” he added. Asked whether he had any sort of communication with Manmohan Singh to watch a film based on his life, Anupam said: “When you do a biopic of a certain person, then the actor of that film always wants to know the reaction of the person on whom that biopic is based. “I am hopeful that at least his family will go and watch the film. I also want to request Dr. Manmohan Singh to watch the film, then I feel not only me, but people will also like his gesture.”

Relationships Love is one of the most profound emotions known to human beings. There are many kinds of love, but most people seek its expression in a romantic relationship with a compatible partner. For many, romantic relationships comprise the most meaningful aspect of life, providing a source of deep fulfillment. The need for human connection appears to be innate, but the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. A great deal of evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship be-
gins in infancy, in a child’s earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant’s needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they appear to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. Failed relationships happen for many reasons, and the failure of a relationship is often a source of great psychological anguish. Most people have to work consciously to master the skills necessary to make relationships endure and flourish.
Finding Love Finding a partner with whom to share a life is a wonderful—yet sometimes difficult—process. The desire to do so may push people into unfamiliar settings to encounter potential partners. Dating, or setting up meetings in advance, is a process by which people spend time with another person in order to gradually determine whether the person is suitable as a potential mate. Determining whether a connection reflects temporary infatu-
ation or true love can sometimes be challenging—and research suggests that there are revealing clues in behavior. One possibly counterintuitive indicator is one’s sense of self. A good partner can push people to discover new activities or beliefs that expand their self-concept. Another is stress: Repeatedly interacting with someone whose impression matters deeply can fuel anxiety. Other indicators include being highly motivated to see the person and investing a significant amount of time, emotion, and en-
ergy into the budding relationship. Building a Healthy Relationship Strong relationships are continually nurtured with care and communication. Although relationships can take many forms, certain traits have been shown to be especially important for healthy relationships. Both individuals should feel confident that their partner is willing to devote time and attention to the other, and that they are committed to accommodating the differences

and challenges that inevitably emerge. In the 21at century, good relationships are generally marked by a sense of fairness in the distribution of the chores of maintaining a household. Partners also feel grateful for one another, openly provide and receive affection, and engage in honest discussions about sex. In good relationships, partners always afford their partner the benefit of the doubt, which creates a sense of being on the same team in life, a feeling that can help couples overcome many difficulties.

HOW TO DRESS CHILDREN PROPERLY FOR SNOW Playing in the snow is a great way for kids to spend a snow day or just make the most of winter weather, get exercise, and have fun. Learn how to dress children properly before they go out in the snow to keep them warm and safe from severe problems like frostbite and hypothermia. Understanding How to Dress for Snow Dress in multiple layers. Dress children in at least three layers before they go out in the snow: a base layer, which wicks moisture away; a middle layer, which insulates warmth; and an outer layer, which offers warmth as well as moisture and wind protection. The American Pediatrics Association suggests that a good general rule is to dress children in one more layer than an adult would wear in the same conditions. You can adjust these layers based on climate and conditions by adding more than one middle layer, or doing without the middle layer or a removable coat liner. Encourage kids to come inside to put on an extra layer if they’re cold, or remove a middle layer if they are overheating. Stick to wool and synthetics. When buying base layers and socks in particular, favor synthetic fabrics and natural wool over garments made with cotton. Cotton is a hydrophilic fiber, meaning it absorbs and retains moisture easily, trapping cold moisture against the body and increasing health risks. Good materials to look out for when you’re shopping for warm layers and socks are: acrylic, polyester, wool, Merino wool, and polypropylene. IFind waterproof outerwear. Invest in a quality coat and snow pants that are rated for a certain temperature and ability to repel moisture and wind. Choose a rating based on the lowest predicted or average temperatures for the winter in your area. Know that there is a difference between “waterproof” and “waterresistant,” with the latter being less effective at keeping moisture out of the garment. Check the label and ratings on coats and pants before you buy them. Treat outerwear with spray-on durable water repellant (DWR) to increase effectiveness or re-treat an older garment to maintain its performance. Choose outerwear in bright colors. Dress children with outerwear in bright colors so that they are visible in contrast to the snow and
seen by other pedestrians and nearby drivers through any snowy conditions. Get coats and snow pants with neon elements or reflective strips for extra visibility. Or add your own reflective tape to a garment.[4] ICheck weather to see if it is safe to play outside. Look at weather reports before allowing your child to play outside in the snow. Avoid sending them out if there is a snow storm, high winds, or other winter weather approaching, or if it is nearing sundown. If the temperature or wind chill (the “real feel” that takes into account wind) is at or below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less. Make sure kids go out for only short intervals, or not at all if the temperature and wind chill are very low.[5] Periodically call children inside to check them for signs of frostnip or frostbite, whether or not they complain of being cold. Check the head, face, ears, hands, and feet for loss of color or redness, or reports of numbness or tingling. Run affected areas under warm (not hot) water until sensation returns.Choosing the Right Tops and Bottoms Get a top and bottom base layer. Dress children in a base layer for the legs and for the upper body. Base layer garments should fit snugly against the body, be breathable, and dry quickly, so as not to hold cold moisture against the skin. Buy base layers made from thin wool, polyester, and other synthetic materials. Avoid cotton, as it absorbs moisture easily but is slow to dry, causing remaining moisture around the body to get cold and remain wet. Long Johns or thermal underwear are good choices for a base layer, as long as they are made from a moisture-wicking material and not cotton. Add a shirt or light jacket and pants. Over the base layer, dress your child in a warm long sleeve shirt, sweater, or fleece jacket. Pull on light sweatpants or other thin, stretchy, and comfortable pants or leggings. These should fit over your child’s base layer and under coats and pants. Many people choose to forgo a middle layer for the legs, as legs are more easily kept warm by movement, and bulk accumulates here easily and begins to
restrict movement. Use your discretion and listen to your child about their comfort. Never wear denim jeans or other pants made from very heavy material, as these absorb water easily and dry very slow Top with a quality coat. Look for winter coat that is intended for snow, cold temperature, wind resistance, and water repellency. Check cold and waterproof ratings to ensure that a coat will meet the conditions of your local climate. Make sure all zippers, snaps, and other fastenings are closed when dressing the child. Look for coats that are long so they cover the body past the waist, and have high necks and hoods to keep the cold out from the neck and face. Ideally, a coat should also have plenty of ventilation methods to release sweat from the inner layers. Look for zippers under the arms that allow for ventilation when you need it, a front zipper that’s easy to zip and unzip, and sleeve ends that can be loosened. Ensure that zipper pulls are easy to handle or modify them so that children don’t have to remove gloves or mittens to zip and unzip. Get good snow pants. Look for pants that have similar qualities as coats in regards to warmth, good construction, and wind and water resistance. Snow pants are generally thick, insulated pants meant to be worn over other layers. Consider snow pants in a bib or overalls style that goes over the shoulder to help pants stay on and avoid snow and cold getting in from between the coat and pants. Keeping Extremities and Faces Warm Get quality socks and boots. Choose quality socks that are 100% wool or a blend of wool and synthetic material. Invest in winter boots that are well made and well insulated, with good tread and a good rating for cold as well as waterproof ability. Avoid wearing more than one pair of socks, as this will only create bunching and discomfort without much extra warmth. Ensure that boots are not too tight, especially if wearing them with thick socks. Too-tight socks and boots can constrict blood flow, and thus heat, to the feet and toes. Cover the head and neck with a hat and scarf. Wrap the neck and even the lower half of the face in a warm knit scarf. Tuck the ends down into the coat and zip it up to or over the scarf. Top the
head with a warm beanie or hat with earflaps, then pull up the hood on the coat for extra warmth and protection. Ensure that the hat you dress your child in fully covers the ears and fits snugly on the head. An ear warmer headband or earmuffs may be needed additionally or instead of a hat if ears remain cold or come uncovered. Ski masks or balaclavas cover more of the face and can provide extra warmth. Just make sure that your child can breathe and see easily in something covering the face. Never dress infants or toddlers in a wraparound scarf, and supervise all children to avoid the risk of strangulation. Try a tube scarf or neck gaiter to help reduce this risk. Choose warm gloves or mittens. Make sure to dress kids in mittens or gloves that are thick, well-insulated, and waterproof. Mittens are ideal, as they hold more warmth inside. You may want to choose mittens for younger children, and gloves for when children are old enough to have more dexterity in their fingers. Try mittens or gloves that extend up to the forearm, or even shirts that have gloves attached, to avoid getting snow and cold into the gap between coat and gloves. You can also buy glove liners, which provide an extra layer of warmth and moisture wicking under your regular pair of gloves.

ited theatres such as The International Village Cinemas this rather small film focuses on a unique period in the men’s lives. Thrust into the spotlight in the early 30s American comics Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy proves to be a winning combination for film audiences around the world. Impeccable casting sees Britain’s man of all voices Steve Coogan ( A Night at the Museum) and amusing American John C. Reilly ( Step Brothers) connect with viewers as a team with perfect timing yet showing strains in their unique partnership. Despite the on screen persona Stan & Ollie shows the rather tumultuous nature of this pair as busi-
ness decisions and personality conflicts rose to the fore and became more prominent during an overseas trip. Hopes to resuscitate a now subsiding career proved to be a long shot as the two did the vaudevillian circuit around Great Britain. Yes, there definitely is a good bond between Coogan and Reilly. What Stan & Ollie does so well is look at the day to day lives of two actors eking out a living in bustling Los Angeles before hoping for one last comeback/hurrah in England. Fun routines will make you laugh and. Chuckle to yourselves but the growing pains of a strained relationship will forever color your views of two giants In the comedy world second to none.

2019 Corvette ZR1: Return of the King
Chevrolet has introduced the 2019 Corvette ZR1, a supercar that pushes Corvette’s performance legacy with the highest power, greatest track performance and most advanced technology in its production history. “I’ve never driven a Corvette like this before, and nobody else has either, because there’s never been one like this before,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development,
Purchasing and Supply Chain. “Its unprecedented performance puts all other global supercars on notice that the ZR1 is back.” The Corvette ZR1’s exclusive LT5 supercharged engine, which is rated at an SAE-certified 755 horsepower (563 kW) and 715 lb-ft of torque (969 Nm), is establishing a new benchmark in performance. Further, the ZR1 elevates Corvette’s track capability with two
