New Delhi (IANS): The Indian military will not copy the western system of joint theatre command and will work out a system of its own, said General Bipin Rawat on Wednesday after taking charge as the country’s first Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS). General Rawat said that he will strive to integrate the three services in three years. Donning a new uniform, General Rawat inspected a tri-services Guard of Honour before taking charge as CDS. Talking about his priorities, he said: “What I have gathered that the task of the CDS is cut out. That all three services have to be together to be capable.” General Rawat also stressed that the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy will work as a team. “CDS will keep control, it is not that CDS wants to run a force on his own. All three services cannot work on the formula that their sum total of three energies translates into ‘three’. It has to be much more, maybe 5-7.” He said that the CDS have to achieve more through synergy and integration. “We have to have best economical use of resources, we will focus on integration. We can do training jointly. Procurement procedure can be made uniform. We have to see how we can integrate the three forces,” he stressed. Talking about the CDS being given responsibility of three new joint organisations, General Rawat said: “When I took over as Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee, these organisations were already under CoSC. We are having three joint organisations, we are working on
it.” He also said that CDS is part of Strategic Force Command which will look after nuclear weapons. On a lighter note when asked about his reaction over being country’s first CDS, General Rawat said: “My head is feeling lighter. I have taken off the angled Gorkha hat that I wore for 42 years. I am wearing a peaked cap, it shows the
CDS will remain neutral to all three services and my head is feeling lighter.” On challenges the Indian armed forces are facing at the Line of Actual Control on the China front, he said that all challenges would be dealt with through integration and synergy. He also stressed that striving
for joint theatre command will be his mandate. “Methods of theaterization can be different. We don’t need to follow the western model, we can have our own way. We need to study with all three services. We will have our own system that suits us,” General Rawat added. When asked about political parties questioning his political inclinations, General Rawat said: “We are far away from politics. We work as per directions of government of the day.” Congress on Tuesday raised questions over the appointment of General Rawat as the CDS. In a series of tweets, party spokesperson Manish Tewari said: “With great regret and fullest of responsibility may I say that the Govt has started on a very wrong foot with regard to CDS. Time alone unfortunately will reveal the implications of this decision.”

17% of babies born globally on January 1 were Indian New Delhi (IANS): An estimated 67,385 babies were born in India in 2020 on New Year’s Day, according to UNICEF’s estimates. Indian babies were expected to account for 17 per cent of the estimated 3,92,078 babies born globally on New Year’s Day. Globally, over half of these births are estimated to have taken place in eight countries. India with 67,385 topped the list followed by China at 46,299,
Nigeria at 26,039, Pakistan at 16,787, Indonesia at 13,020, the US at 10,452, the Democratic Republic of Congo at 10,247 and Ethiopia at 8,493. In 2018, 2.5 million newborns died in just their first month of life; about a third of them on the first day of life. Among those children, most died from preventable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like sepsis. In addition, more than 2.5 million babies are
born dead each year. Over the past three decades, the world has seen remarkable progress in child survival, cutting the number of children worldwide who die before their fifth birthday by more than half. But there has been slower progress for newborns. Babies dying in the first month accounted for 47 per cent of all deaths among children under five in 2018, up from 40 per cent in 1990.
Slowdown continues: November core sector growth contracts by 1.5% New Delhi (IANS): Contraction in India’s eight major industries continued for the fourth consecutive month in November as the output pace receded by1.5 per cent. However, the rate of contraction in November was slower than the sharp plunge of 5.8 per cent registered in October. On a year-on-year basis, the growth rate stood at 3.3 per cent in November 2018. The eight core industries include coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity. As per the Index of Eight Core Industries, barring refinery products, fertilisers and cement, all other sectors contracted in November. The ECI comprises over 40 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). On a sector-specific basis, the refinery output, which has the highest weightage of 28.03, rose by 3.1 per cent in
November compared to the same month of the previous financial year. Nevertheless, electricity generation, which has the second highest weightage of 19.85, decreased by 5.7 per cent. Similarly, steel production, the third most important component with a weightage of 17.91, slipped by 3.7 per cent during the month under review, whereas coal mining, with 10.33 weightage, was down by 2.5 per cent. Extraction of crude oil, which has a weightage of 8.98, declined by 6 per cent in November. The sub-index for natural gas output with a weightage of 6.87 inched lower by 6.4 per cent. On the other hand, cement output, which has a weightage of 5.37, grew by 4.1 per cent, similarly, fertiliser production, which has the least weightage of 2.62, increased 13.6 per cent in November. “As expected, the contraction in the output of the core industries narrowed sig-
nificantly to 1.5 per cent in November 2019, reflecting the sequential improvement in 5 of the 8 constituents, namely coal, electricity, cement, fertilizer and refinery products,” ICRA Principal Economist Aditi Nayar said. “While the narrowing in the pace of core sector contraction is encouraging, five of the eight core sectors recorded a YoY decline in November 2019, which paints a sobering picture of the underlying trends.” According to Brickwork Ratings Chief Economic Advisor M. Govinda Rao: “Eight core sectors continued to contract for the fourth straight month signifying the underlying slowdown concerns and demand constraints.” “The core sector growth contracted by 1.5 per cent in November 2019 as against 3.3 per cent growth reported in the corresponding month a year ago. However, there is some improvement in November 2019 as compared to previous month’s all-time low of -5.8 per cent.”

D-company hatches new plot to kill Rajan, security tightened at Delhi’s Tihar Jail New Delhi (IANS): In what seems to be a fresh plot by underworld don and Dcompany member, Chhota Shakeel to kill arch-rival Chhota Rajan, security has been tightened at the capital’s Tihar jail where the latter has been presently lodged. Shakeel, who operates along with his boss Dawood Ibrahim from his hideout in Karachi, has allegedly tasked an Indian module of the D-company to eliminate Rajan inside his Tihar cell. Asked about the D-company’s new plot, Director General of Delhi Prisons (Tihar), Sandeep Goyal said that security has been tightened in the jail where Rajan is kept. “I can only speak about the security. He (Rajan) is lodged in a Super High Security jail and all efforts are been taken by us to ensure foolproof security. But I cannot comment on threat given to him,” the senior IPS officer told IANS. Sources said Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, known in the underworld as Chhota Rajan, has been kept in “Super High Security” jail number 2, guarded round the clock, exclusively by Tamil Nadu Special Police. “After the threat, Rajan’s three cooks have been changed. Besides, cooked food served to Rajan, and his ration (including grain, edible oil and raw vegetables) is also being checked. A distance of at least 10 metres between him and others is being strictly main-
Chhota Rajan after his arrest in Indonesia in 2015. tained inside the jail,” said a source. According to the source, Bihar mafia don and fourtime MP, Mohammed Shahabuddin is also lodged in Super High Security Jail no.2. However, Rajan and Shahabuddin are not allowed to meet inside the ward which is monitored 24x7 by high resolution CCTV cameras. Intelligence agencies had recently intercepted a telephonic call wherein Chhota Shakeel has been discussing a plot to eliminate Chhota Rajan inside the jail. The conspiracy reportedly discuses ways to poison Rajan in his cell. Shakeel and Dawood Ibrahim are of the view that Rajan has been an informer of Indian agencies who has been providing clues to the police about D-company’s ongoing underworld activities, particularly about company’s drug and fake currency smuggling which has its base in Nepal and
Bangladesh. Rajan, a former member of D-company, had a split with Dawood on communal lines after the 1993 serial bombings in Mumbai. In late 2015, on a tip off by Australian police, Rajan was captured in Indonesia’s Bali by Interpol and deported to India. Since then, for security reasons, Rajan has been lodged in Super High Security ward of Tihar. “It is the same ward where a few decades back, notorious criminal Charles Sobhraj was lodged. This ward is assigned to most hardened criminals,” revealed a Deputy Superintendent level officer of Tihar. According to him, these days, only Sujata Nikalje, wife of Rajan and his lawyers are allowed to meet the don. A strict vigil on Rajan’s movement are monitored by Intelligence Bureau. A periodic review of his security is also analysed by Tihar administration and Intelligence agencies.

DSGMC slams Pakistan’s 3-day ban on non-Sikhs to visit Kartarpur Gurdwara New Delhi (IANS): The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has slammed Pakistan’s decision to deny entry to non-Sikh visitors to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan, for three days in January. Thousands of Indian pilgrims of all faiths, primarily Sikhs and Hindus, visit Kartarpur, just across the border in Pakistan, to pay obeisance at gurd-
wara which marks the final resting of Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak. It was earlier reported that Pakistan has decided not to allow the entry of non-Sikhs to the shrine, from January 3 to January 5, during the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh who is the tenth and last of the Sikh Gurus. Terming the decision as discriminatory and clashing with
the basic tenets of Sikhism, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, President of DSGMC, said: “According to Sikh religion, the doors of gurdwaras are open to every human being irrespective of religion, class, caste, gender etc., and closing doors of gurdwara, a Sikh religious place to non-Sikhs violates the Sikh religion’s principle of equality of all human beings before Almighty God.”
New Year price hikes give opposition fuel against government New Delhi (IANS): People of the country, yet to recover from their New Year revelry, woke up Wednesday to the double blow of increased rail fares, and cooking gas prices - both essential components of the common Indians’ lives and directly impacting their household budgets. Coming on the first day of 2020, the developments couldn’t have been more inopportune for the government, which is battling criticism over its handling of the economy amid fears of spiralling inflation. CPI-M chief Sitaram Yechury lost no time in attacking the government. “Modi govt starts the year. After railway passenger fare hikes, another attack on peoples’ livelihoods. All this in the wake of sharp job losses, food price inflation and record fall in rural wages,” he said in a tweet. The Indian Railways has hiked passenger fares across the board, with immediate effect. Prices per kilometre have been raised for passenger trains, sleeper, and AC class fares, with sleeper class passengers will have to shell out an additional 2 paise per kilometre of travel, while those travelling in 3 AC, 2 AC and AC first class will be paying 4 paise more per kilometre. Wednesday’s hikes come almost five years after the last fare rationalisation exercise undertaken in 2014-15. Apart from attributing the move to defray expenditure incurred on enhancing passenger amenities and disbursing 7th Pay Com-
mission payouts, the Railways has said that revenues realised from the fare hike will help speed up modernisation and services. However, opposition party leaders are not letting the opportunity go of criticising the government over the price hike. Fresh from their recent victory of sorts over the BJP in Maharashtra, NCP leader Supriya Sule also tweeted against the government. “2020 begins with a piece of bad news for the common man as Railway Fare and the prices of Non Subsidised Gas Cylinders have increased...With Inflation and unemployment on one hand and slow economic growth hand, the backbone of the common man will be broken. Economic reforms are needed to address the issue of Inflation,” she said. Although LPG price revision is a monthly feature every month, Wednesday’s hike was met with annoyance by twitterati, coming on the first day of the year. The price of non-subsidised LPG cylinder has been increased by Rs 19, and with the latest hike, the prices have recorded a total increase of Rs 139.50 per cylinder, over the past five months. As opposed to subsidised cylinders which are available at Rs 495.86, the non-subsidised cylinders are available at a higher price. The latest price restructuring has increased the cost of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder from Rs 695 to Rs 714.
The DSGMC has decided to raise the issue with Pakistan through India’s External Affairs Ministry. They also plan to organise protest marches and rallies to oppose the decision of Pakistan government. Sirsa also said that the decision goes against the MoU signed between India and Pakistan on the Kartarpur Corridor by which entry is assured
NEW
to persons to the holy shrine without any discrimination. He asked the Pakistani authorities to honour the agreement clause without any other considerations . Sirsa countered the Pakistan government’s claim that the decision was taken because the place has limited facilities for pilgrims and therefore it was decided to hold an exclu-
sive event for Sikhs of Pakistan and India. “Pilgrims visit holy shrine for ‘darshan’ and mental peace and not to enjoy the facilities and hospitality of the Pakistani government,” he pointed out. The Kartarpur corridor which was opened last year, allows Indian pilgrims to visit the shrine and return on the same day.

Akali Dal leader shot dead; CBI probe sought Amritsar / Chandigarh (IANS): Akali leader Gurdeep Singh, who is believed to have been close to former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia, was gunned down by unidentified assailants in his home village in Amritsar district on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday. His wife is sarpanch of Umarpura village.
Singh, who suffered eight gunshot injuries, was returning from a gurdwara when he was attacked. Police have filed a case against gangster Harmanjit Singh, his father Nirmal Singh and three others. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has demanded a CBI inquiry into the political murder by the Jaggu Bhagwan-
puria gang and said since the Director General of Police is helpless in taking action against the minister-gangster nexus, it would hold dharnas as well as approach courts to ensure justice for the victim. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Majithia said the political assassination of Gurdeep Singh was a direct result of threats be-
ing issued to him warning of dangerous consequences if he did not stop speaking against the minister-gangster nexus. “A message has been sent to me that my close political associates will be targeted if I do not stop speaking for justice for former Akali sarpanch Dalbir Dhilwan who was also murdered in
the same way like Gurdeep Singh,” he told the media. Majithia, who was accompanied by former minister Daljit Singh Cheema, said he had already approached DGP Dinkar Gupta, seeking action against the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang in November but immediately afterwards the gangster was given a clean chit by an Inspector General-
level officer. Stating that he would not be deterred from his goal of exposing those like Jails Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa, who is “patronising gangsters like Jaggu Bhagwanpuria”, he said: “We will expose this nexus and will not allow the state police to indulge in a clean chit operation.”
Unite against BJP’s divisive moves: Amarinder on CAA Ludhiana (IANS): Lashing out at the BJP for trying to change the Constitution’s Preamble, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday called upon all Indians to unite against the BJP’s divisive and dangerous attempts to destroy the nation’s secular fabric with the draconian Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). His government will not allow the implementation of the CAA in the state and the Congress will continue to fight it tooth and nail, said Amarinder Singh while addressing the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) leaders and workers at a protest march and dharna here. He was joined by senior party leaders including the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Punjab, Asha Kumari, Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, besides Preneet Kaur and Manpreet Singh Badal. The BJP could not get away with its nefarious designs, the Chief Minister warned, pointing out that protests against the draconian Act were currently going on in 16 states, including Punjab. Reading out the Preamble, he said it was the very basis of India’s foundation, which nobody could disturb. While articles of the Constitution are amended from time to time, not just in India but across the world, no one can tolerate tinker-
ing with its basic structure, he added, pointing out that even the United Nations had termed the CAA discriminatory. Referring to the manhandling of AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh, Amarinder Singh said the police could not have indulged in such behaviour without Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s knowledge. “Aren’t you ashamed of such actions,” he asked Yogi Adityanath, warning that the Congress would not forget this incident and the tables would turn one day. Pointing out that Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students had also passed a resolution against the CAA, the Chief Minister observed that while the entire world was expressing concern over the ramifications of the legislation, “those sitting in Delhi continue to be adamant, refusing to pay heed to the voice of the nation”. The protest march, held in the state’s economic heartland, would help send the anti-CAA message across India, asserted the Chief Minister. In an informal chat with mediapersons later, he reiterated that his government would continue to oppose the Centre’s attempt to destroy India’s secular character and change the Preamble of the Constitution.
Congress appoints Punjab Minister AICC Secretary New Delhi (IANS): The Congress has appointed Punjab Minister Vijay Inder Singla as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary, attached
to party treasurer Ahmed Patel. As per an AICC release, the Congress interim chief has appointed Singla the AICC Secretary with immediate effect and
will look after party properties and assets. Singla, perceived close to Rahul Gandhi, is PWD Minister in Punjab and MLA from Sangrur.

A year later the lesions reappeared. Lung specialists diagnosed hypersensitivity pneumonia from dust laden fungi and spores in the air ducts of his office. #16 - When taking medicine that requires a drink, it is safer to take it with orange juice, rather than grapefruit juice. Grapefruit juice contains an enzyme that can increase the amount of the drug over a period of time which can result in complications. #17 - Today 20% of the North American diet is wheat, and 80% of that is refined. The prowrestling has a bright future in India. Also, it helps youth shun
drugs,” Khali told IANS recently. He is keen to set up similar academies in his home state, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana under his Jalandhar-based company, Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE). Last year, Khali registered a land for setting up a wrestling academy in Samanabahu village in Karnal district. Khali said he is not taking fund-
ing from the government for setting up an academy. The funds will be raised by him. The professional wrestler has organised fights in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh by raising money from his resources. In 2018, the Khali’s company invested in a big way by bringing several foreign wrestlers to Himachal Pradesh. His journey from rags to riches is incredible. Khali’s journey from his ancestral village to the international wrestling arena has been long and hard. Born in a poor family on August 27, 1972, Khali, who is one of the seven siblings in the family, he even had to work as a roadside labourer to earn livelihood. He later went to Shimla to become a security guard. He later came in contact with Punjab’s former police chief M.S. Bhullar, who arranged a job for him in Punjab Police in 1993. He was posted with the 7th bat-
talion of the Punjab Armed Police based in Jalandhar, 150 km from Chandigarh. After learning wrestling tricks in the police, he went to the US for specialised training. Rana became a professional wrestler in October 2000. Khali still loves to spend a few days every year in his native Dhirana village in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, some 150 km from the state headquarters Nahan. His profile on the WWE website says: “Everyone looked up to The Great Khali -- whether you wanted to or not. “That’s because the 7-foot-1, 347-pound skyscraper of a man towered over all of the WWE Universe. Khali stood out from every crowd not only for his overwhelming size, but also for being the first to blaze a trail to WWE from his native India.” The former WWE wrestler, who has beaten the likes of internationally known WWE names like ‘The Undertaker’,
Kane, Big Show, John Cena and Shawn Michaels and others, says his fight is against drugs and for this, he wants to set up more pro-wrestling academies in this region with his own resources. Khali practices wrestling regularly. “I am practising daily for eight to 10 hours to keep myself fit,” he said. His family, particularly father Jwala Ram and mother Tandi Devi, had got portions of the house in their ancestral village in 2008 renovated to suit the convenience of their fairly rich and famed son.
Punjab allows peaceful protest by students Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said his government would not stop students from protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and other controversial actions of the Central government, but would not allow peace to be disturbed at any cost. Referring to the proposed statewide protest by Leftaligned student unions against the CAA, as well as the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR), the Chief Minister said the protest was the democratic right of every citizen, including students, to stage a
peaceful dharna and march against these initiatives. Even his government, Amarinder Singh pointed out, was totally opposed to the CAA and the NRC in view of the fundamentally divisive and discriminatory nature of the legislation and action initiated by the BJP-led government at the Centre. During an anti-CAA protest organised by the Congress in Ludhiana on Monday, he had reiterated his government’s decision not to allow the controversial legislation to be implemented in the state under any circumstances. There was, thus, no question, of barring students from com-
ing out against these actions of the Central government, said the Chief Minister, making it clear that as long as the protestors did not take the law in their hands in any manner, the police would not prevent them from carrying out their proposed campaign. However, the Chief Minister warned that no violence or destruction of public property would be tolerated during the planned protest. Amarinder Singh also urged the student leaders to ensure that proposed protest is carried out peacefully, and to keep a check for possible infiltration of ‘goonda’ elements among the protestors.

The New Porsche 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 Toronto. The Porsche family welcomes new members: with the new 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4, two particularly emotional and powerful top models to claim top spot in the model range. Their pure character will appeal to sports car enthusiasts who delight in unadulterated driving pleasure and appreciate a high level of agility. The perfectly balanced mid-engine concept offers all this. For the first time, the duo share a technical base. This includes the newly developed four-litre six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The boxer engine generates 414 hp in both models. While the GT4 represents the entry-level GT road model from
Porsche, the Spyder lends itself to all kinds of curves. At the heart of both models is the new four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine. The naturally aspirated engine is based on the same engine family as the turbo engines in the current 911 Carrera model
series. The new high-revving engine generates 414 hp – 29 hp more than in the GT4 predecessor models. The third generation of the Spyder even has 39 hp more. It delivers a maximum torque of 309 lb.ft. at between 5,000 and 6,800 rpm. The manual transmission
sports cars can both break the 300 km/h barrier: the 718 Spyder has a top speed of 301 km/h, while the 718 Cayman GT4 can reach 304 km/h. Both models accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds from a standing start. Among the striking features of the 718 Cayman GT4 is
the comprehensively improved aerodynamics concept. It produces up to 50 percent more downforce, without adversely affecting drag – proof of outstanding efficiency. The aerodynamics of both models benefit enormously from the newly designed single-chamber arch rear silencer: it creates space in the rear section for a functional diffuser, which accounts for a good 30 percent of the downforce at the rear axle in the 718 Cayman GT4. The fixed rear wing is also marked by greater efficiency: it produces around 20 percent more downforce compared with its predecessor. The new 718 Spyder is a pure machine for driving pleasure with a lightweight convertible top that can
cope with top speeds. It continues the history of such famous Roadsters as the Porsche 550 Spyder and the 718 RS 60 Spyder. Open or closed, it thrills with a captivating silhouette. The roof is suitable for everyday use and can be stowed away under the rear deck lid in just a few steps. Unlike the GT4, the 718 Spyder has a rear spoiler that comes up automatically at 120 km/h. Thanks to the functional diffuser, it is the first model in the Boxster family to generate aerodynamic downforce at the rear axle. The new Porsche 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4 are available to order now. Canadian pricing starts at $110,500 for the Spyder and $113,800 for the Cayman GT4.

MOVIE REVIEW

The Champion (PG) *** Lesson Learned!
Never judge a book by the cover. Or a movie. Just as the little ones head back to school ( sorry Rodney) comes The Champion. And indeed it is. As the lead off to the much heralded Italian Film Festival here’s a film that transcends all boundaries and borders. Consider this a must see movie that is smart and endearing and definitely worth seeing. Do not be deterred as English subtitles don’t for a second distract you from the story of this Italian gem. And if you like sports all the better. In this age of hero worship and celebrity adoration comes News from Italy of a rising soccer sensation for Roma. All but 19 is star in The making Christian Ferro. Oops. I guess he has already arrived as he can’t go anywhere without being noticed. Pampered beyond belief with an entourage to complement this spoiled brat’s lifestyle it’s up to

actor Andrea Carpenzano (Boys Cry) to bring this mixed up messed up boy to life. And he does with style and finesse. Bad behavior can prove problematic in any family, company or organization. In an effort to tame the beast and avoid further potential problems ( i.e. scandals) on the pitch, in The stands, or with the general public at large the powers that be feel some outside help is required. Send in the clowns - or in this case a teacher to ideally right any wrongs and lead the lad on a path of recovery. Tasked with this rather
envious job is a Mr. Valerio Fioretti. Somehow Stefano Accorsi manages to Navigate his way through this seemingly impossible assignment. Here the key to this whole movie is the interaction between teacher and student - two people from totally different backgrounds and temperaments. Lucky for us the chemistry is there and the sparks ( and tears) fly, Director Leonardo D’Agostini let’s loose and pulls off a terrific drama full of heart and soul and dynamic performances not to be missed.

Volvo Cars and Uber present production vehicle ready for self-driving By Veeno Dewan Volvo Cars, a leader in automotive safety, and Uber, the leading ride-hailing firm, today present a jointly developed production car capable of driving by itself, the next step in the strategic collaboration between both companies. Uber and Volvo Cars entered a joint engineering agreement in 2016 and have since developed several prototypes aimed at accelerating the companies’ self-driving car development. The Volvo XC90 SUV presented today is the first production car that in combination with Uber’s self-driving system is capable of fully driving itself. The XC90 base vehicle is equipped with key safety features that allow Uber to easily install its own self-driving system, enabling the possible future deployment of
self-driving cars in Uber’s network as an autonomous ridesharing service. The most important features of Volvo Cars’ autonomous drive-ready production vehicle include several back-up systems for both steering and braking functions as well as battery back-up power. If any of the primary systems should fail for some reason, the back-up systems are designed to immediately act to bring the car to a stop. In addition to Volvo’s built-in back-up systems, an array of sensors atop and built into the vehicle are designed for Uber’s self-driving system to safely operate and maneuver in an urban environment. When paired with Volvo’s vehicle platform, Uber’s self-driving system may one day allow for safe, reliable autonomous
ridesharing without the need for a Mission Specialist, the specially trained Uber employees operating and overseeing the
car in areas designated and suitable for autonomous drive. The autonomous drive-capable production vehicle revealed today is part of Volvo Cars’ 2016 commercial agreement with Uber for the delivery of tens of thousands of autonomous drive-ready base cars in coming years. “We believe autonomous drive technology will allow us to further improve safety, the foundation of our company,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “By the middle of the next decade we expect one-third of all cars we sell to be fully autonomous. Our agreement with Uber underlines our ambition to be the supplier of choice to the world’s leading ride-hailing companies.”
Jaguar XE SV Project 8 – Fastest dour door production car in the world The Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations-developed XE SV Project 8 has demonstrated its breadth of performance capability by setting the fastest Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time for a four-door production car again: 7min 18.361sec. This new officially-verified time on the 20.6km (12.8mile) lap is 2.9 seconds faster than Project 8’s previous benchmark set in November 2017 and 7 seconds faster than any other four-door production car has achieved. Project 8 is also the first vehicle to set an official whole lap record in the Nürburgring’s mid-range production car class, lapping the 20.8km (12.94mile) circuit length in 7min 23.164sec. Returning to the legendary German circuit in a production-specification twoseat Track Pack version of
Project 8 was development driver Vincent Radermecker. The car’s height-adjustable twin-spring coil-over suspension was set in ‘track’ ride height, with adjustable front splitter and carbonfibre rear aerodynamic wing positioned for maximum downforce and stability. To maximize performance and steering precision, for the final record runs Project 8 was fitted with new off-the-shelf ultra-high performance Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires. Tested and chosen by SV engineers for their capability on the track, the road-legal tires use rubber com-
pounds directly transferred from Michelin’s competition tires. The original Nürburgring time set by Jaguar XE SV Project 8 demonstrated the extreme performance envelope of the world’s fastest production sedan, but the SV team is driven by a motorsport mentality and we knew Project 8 could go even faster. This new official record time is a fitting reward for everyone who has played a part in pushing the boundaries for our customers with Project 8.” Jamal Hameedi, Engineering Director, Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations. Powered by the most high-
ly tuned 600PS version of Jaguar’s 5.0-litre Supercharged V8, the all-wheeldrive Project 8 is capable of 0-60mph in 3.3 seconds (0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds) and a top speed of 200mph (320km/h). Project 8 also features a fully-enclosed flat underbody for en-
hanced aerodynamics, which is key to its performance. Production of the limited-edition Project 8 will finish this year. There are three distinct four-door specifications available: Lightweight two-seat Track Pack* – as used for the record lap times. Four-seat
configuration with same aero package and performance as Track Pack. Touring specification with discreet fixed rear spoiler – the ultimate Q-car, limited to 15 examples worldwide and 186mph. Prices for the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 start from £149,995 in the UK.
