Multi-faceted Kader Khan leaves behind a vast oeuvre of work, fond memories Mumbai (IANS): An actor-writercomedian and Quranic scholar, the multi-talented Kader Khan, who died early on Tuesday (IST) in Toronto at the age of 81, has left behind a vast oeuvre of work from a career spanning over four decades and will be remembered as much for his contribution to Hindu filmdom as for deciphering Islam for the laity across the religious spectrum. The sad news of Kader Khan’s passing shocked the Bollywood fraternity on New Year’s Day, when it broke early on Tuesday morning. He had spent nearly four months in hospital, for various old-age related ailments, including breathing issues, and finally succumbed on December 31 evening (Toronto time). Born on October 22, 1937 in Kabul to a Pashtun family, Kader Khan (KK) migrated to Mumbai in 1952 and was educated in a local municipal school and later graduated from Mumbai’s Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari, a government-run institution. He followed up with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the M. S. Saboo Siddique Institute in Mumbai and later became a professor there for around seven years. According to a close family friend Javed Jamaluddin, the family initially lived in the notorious Arab Gully in south Mumbai, before shifting to the suburbs and Kader Khan, who loved to read and write, continuing his higher education there. It was during his college days that he developed a passion for theatre, acting and penning stories and dialogues. He penned a drama, “Local Train” which bagged the first prize at the National Jagruti Drama Competition in the early 1970s, Jamaluddin said. It was Narendra Singh Bedi, son
of the legendary Rajinder Singh Bedi who gave Kader Khan the first break for writing the superhit musical “Jawani Diwani” (1972) starring Randhir Kapoor-Jaya Bhaduri, and since then he never looked back. Bollywood thespian, Dilip Kumar, who happened to watch one of his plays during a college day function, offered Kader Khan a role and an assignment for writing dialogues. But he was already busy with scripting the Rajesh Khanna starrer “Roti” (1974). So later, he wrote the film ‘Bairaag” (1976), a mega-hit musical featuring Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Banu in the lead roles, with Kader Khan in a character role. An avid reader and a film-buff, he had a huge collection of books on various subjects related to filmmaking, acting, screenplay-writing, penning stories-dialogues and other departments from all over the world, besides being a Quranic Scholar with a mastery over Arabic and Urdu.
It was Kader Khan who inspired his friend, A. Krishnamurthi, head of Tina Films International (TFI) to venture into its first Bollywood venture, “Ghar Ek Mandir” (1984), a hit with a multi-star cast, and even insisted on writing the dialogues for it. “After he saw the story, he wanted to play the role of Seth Dharamdas, which was originally assigned to Amjad Khan. He dedicated a lot of time and his dialogues became ‘the pearls in the necklace’ in that film, and later in many of our other films. I knew him since his early days in the film industry and he was truly a good human being, a great actor and an acclaimed writer” Krishnamurthi told IANS. During the shooting of one TFI film, “Aag” (1994), in which Sonali Bendre debuted as an actress, Kader Khan inspired the co-female lead, Shilpa Shetty, to learn Urdu to improve her diction and dialogue delivery and even taught her bits of
it during takes, producer K. Ramji said. Starting with his first film as an actor in the late Yash Chopra’s directorial debut, the super-hit musical “Daag” (1973), over the next 40 years he went on to act in over 300 films in memorable roles, and also wrote the story or dialogues for more than 250 films in Hindi and Urdu, starting with “Roti” (1974). With his rich experience on stage, Kader Khan effortlessly managed to enact all types of negative-positive character roles, besides as a villain, comedian, and double-roles, though competing with some of the biggest names of his era. Some of his most memorable films as a comedian-character actor are: “Daag”, “Adalat”, “Bairaag”, “Parvarish”, “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, “Shalimar”, “Mr. Natwarlal”, “Suhaag”, “Dhan Daulat”, “Qurbani”, “Jwalamukhi”, “Abdullah”, “Naseeb”, “Yaarana”, “Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai”, “Satte Pe Satta”, “Desh Premee”, “Sanam Teri Kasam”, “Mehndi Rang Layegi”, “Himmatwala”, “Coolie”, “Ghar Ek Mandir”, “John Jaani Janardhan”, “Tawaif”, “Loha”, “Jawab Hum Denge”, “Shahenshah”, “Pyar Ka Mandir”, “Khoon Bhari Maang”, “Baap Numbri, Beta Dus Numbri”, “Saajan”, “Bol Radha Bol”, “Aankhen”, “Eena Meena Deeka”, “Coolie No.1”, “Saajan Chale Sasural”, “Judaai”, “Dulhe Raja,” and “Aunty No.1”. He penned the story-dialogues for top-grossing and acclaimed films like: “Jawani Diwani”, “Benaam”, “Roti”, “Amar Akbar Anthony”, “Parvarish”, “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”, “Suhaag”, “Mr. Natwarlal, “Yaarana”, “Lawaaris”, “Desh Premee”, “Khuddar”, “Coolie”, “Sharaabi”, “Ganga Jamna Saraswati”, “Singhasan”, “Khoon Bhari Maang” and “Aunty No. 1”. He also produced a film, “Shama” in 1981.

Congress governments in MP, Rajasthan to withdraw cases against Dalits Bhopal / Jaipur (IANS): Heeding to BSP chief Mayawati’s ultimatum, the Congress governments in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on Tuesday said they will withdraw cases filed against Dalits during the ‘Bharat Bandh’ last year that witnessed large-scale violence. The decisions were announced by the two governments a day after Mayawati threatened to take back the BSP’s support to them if they did not withdraw the cases filed against the Dalits during the ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by Dalit groups. The Madhya Pradesh government will withdraw all the “political cases” filed by the previous BJP government against workers

of political parties and Dalit activists, Law Minister P.C. Sharma said. “We (Congress) have been fighting (against the BJP government). Irrespective of any party, those who have been fighting the BJP government which had sent people to jail... those political cases will be withdrawn,” he said. Last week, Sharma had indicated that the govern-
ment was drafting a proposal to withdraw “politically motivated” cases against political and trade union leaders filed during the BJP’s rule during the last 15 years. In Jaipur, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said his government will revoke cases registered against Dalits during the Bharat Bandh of April 2 last year after reviewing them. Speaking to the media at the Congress office, Gehlot said: “Our government will review all such cases to ensure that innocents are released.” He said that Mayawati’s demand was valid. The previous government had framed cases against many people “and hence our
1984 riots case: Sajjan Kumar surrenders in court
New Delhi (IANS): Former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, sentenced to life imprisonment in a 1984 antiSikh riots case, surrendered in a city court on Monday. Kumar surrendered in Delhi’s Karkardooma Court, complying with an order by the Delhi High Court which on December 17 sentenced him to imprisonment for the “remainder of his natural life.” The High Court had declined his plea for extension of time to surrender from December 31 to January 31. He was convicted for the killing of Kehar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Raghuvender
Sajjan Kumar Singh, Narender Pal Singh and Kuldeep Singh in the Raj Nagar area of Delhi cantonment by a mob. The five victims belonged to one family. Kumar, who has also quit
as a Congress member, has moved the Supreme Court challenging his conviction and sentencing. The 1984 riots took place in the wake of the assassination of the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards. “Kumar’s conviction and now surrender will give a new hope to the victims’ family and boost their fight to put Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Kamal Nath behind bars,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, reacting to the development.

2018: The year when Modi’s charisma appeared to wane
New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP face a tough challenge in the Lok Sabha elections in the coming summer in the wake of its defeat in the recent Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and mounting worries on the economic front. Even at the end of 2017, no one would have given the opposition a chance in the next general elections after BJP’s sweeping success in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in the wake of demonetisation and surgical strikes on terror hideouts across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and its ability to come to power in other states where it was not the largest party. However, the BJP was contained in Modi’s home state of Gujarat in the year-end Assembly elections where it was stopped short of the 100 mark, signalling the green shoots of recovery for the Congress. The change in the last one year became evident after a united Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samajwadi Party defeated the BJP in the Lok Sabha by-elections in its strong holds like Gorakhpur and Phulpur and along with the RLD, in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress worsted the BJP in parliamentary by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and in Karna-
taka. Also, the Congress was quick to learn from BJP’s game elsewhere and surrendered the Chief Minister’s post to the JD-S in a post-poll tie up to keep the BJP out of power in Karnataka, despite the saffron party emerging the single largest in the summer of this year. The results of the recent Assembly polls in five states, where the Congress snatched power from the BJP in the Hindi heartland, has given a major boost to the opposition parties and could be a factor in the battle for control of the next Lok Sabha. During the year, the BJP had lost seven out of the 13 byelections in parliamentary constituencies. Of these, it held nine since 2014. It could retain only Palghar in Maharashtra and Shimoga in Karnataka. Since 2014, the BJP managed to retain just six Lok Sabha seats in by-polls. Besides Palghar and Shimoga, it had won Lakhimpur in Assam, Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, Beed in Maharashtra and Vadodara in Gujarat. In the last four-and-halfyears, the party has lost Lok Sabha by polls in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, Gurdaspur in Punjab, Alwar and Ajmer in Rajasthan, Kairana, Phulpur and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, BhandaraGondiya in Maharashtra
Narendra Modi
and Bellary and Mandya constituencies in Karnataka. The BJP’s tally in the Lok Sabha has come down to 268 from 282 in 2014. The results of the recent Assembly polls and the by-elections may have signalled the weakening of the “Modi wave” of 2014 the road ahead may not be easy for the saffron party, given the fact that major parties like SP and BSP in Uttar Pradesh are planning an anti-BJP alliance and formation of the RJD-led alliance in Bihar, the two states which send 120 of the 543 elected MPs to the 545-member Lok Sabha, where two members are nominated. Although the BJP-led government has been counting various of its schemes including Mudra, Ujwala, Saubhagya, opening of ‘jan dhan’ bank accounts, One Rank One Pension, and decisions on demonetisation, GST and the surgical strikes across the border

in Pakistan as its major achievements in last fourand-a-half-years, the issues related to farmers and impacts of demonetisation and GST, NPAs crisis have come as a major dampener for the ruling party. Unlike in 2014, when they were the challenger at the Centre and in many states, when an untested Modi made various promises, he and his party would now face a lot of questions to answer on the “achhe din” they had offered to the electorate. During the last election campaign, Modi had promised one crore jobs a year and depositing of Rs 15 lakh in each person’s account from the black money to be repatriated from abroad. The opposition is likely to rake up the issues and demand answers over the crisis of unemployment and agrarian distress among others. Besides, the party is also facing the heat from the VHP and RSS, which have been mounting pressure on the government for constructing a Ram temple at Ayodhya by bringing a law or ordinance. Opposition parties allege that the sangh parivar, headed by RSS, may like to raise the political temperature on their pet issues to polarise the political situation. Although the Supreme Court has given a clean chit to the government on the
Rafale fighter jet deal, the issue remains live as the Congress has been pushing for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe. In the Hindi hearltland of Bihar, where the BJP had won 22 of the 40 seats in 2014, Chhattisgarh (10 out of 11), Haryana (10-10), Himachal Pradesh (04-04), Jharkhand (12-14), Madhya Pradesh (16-29), Rajasthan (25-25), Uttarakhand (0505), Uttar Pradesh (71-80) and Delhi (07-07), 182 out of 225 seats came into the party’s kitty in 2014. In the present political scenario, political analysts feel the BJP is unlikely to repeat its performance of 2014, especially in key states like Uttar Pradesh as the coming together of the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, social equations are likely to change. In Bihar, the ‘mahagathbandhan’ of Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress, Hindustani Awam Morcha and Rashtriya Lok Samata Dal has already been formed. Though the Janata Dal-United has now allied with the BJP and the LJP, the grand alliance remains focussed on social engineering of Maha Dalits, extremely backward communities, along with RJD’s traditional Muslim-Yadav votebank. In Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh the BJP has already lost power to Congress and the BJP’s
numbers are likley to drop in 2019. In Maharashtra, the BJP ally, the Shiv Sena, may cause anxiety as both the parties don’t sharing good vibes. Maharashtra is the largest state after Uttar Pradesh as it sends 48 MPs to Lok Sabha. In the last election, the BJP won 23 seats and the Shiv Sena won 18. In Gujarat, which is considered the BJP’s bastion and the Hindutva laboratory, the state to which Modi and BJP President Amit Shah belong, it may not be easy to repeat the 2014 performance given the Congress’ fightback in last year’s Assembly polls. Andhra Pradesh has 25 seats in the Lok Sabha. Earlier, the BJP and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) fought together, with the BJP winning two seats and the TDP 15. Now, the TDP is out of its fold, the BJP is trying to woo a new ally in the form of YRS Congress – at least post poll. In Tamil Nadu, where it is facing heavy headwinds, the party is trying to woo the ruling AIADMK, which is itself split, to take on a formidable DMK-Congress combine in which a number of other regional parties will also find a place. The state has a tradition of voting one way and the results in 40 seats including one in Puducherry will be crucial to the national outcome.

Rahul emerges as effective campaigner and strategist in 2018 New Delhi (IANS): It was a year Congress President Rahul Gandhi came into his own as a campaigner and strategist, emerging as a powerful voice in the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also earned his electoral spurs in tough Hindi heartland battles, helping his party win three states that will have ramifications in the Lok Sabha elections a few months away. Rahul Gandhi began the year as Congress President, having taken over the post from his mother Sonia Gandhi last December at the culmination of party’s organisational elections. The path was full of challenges as barring Punjab and Puducherry, where it had stormed back to power as also Karnataka — where it is the junior partner in the ruling colaition — the Congress was virtually starved of electoral victories since its Lok Sabha debacle in 2014. It had also not beaten the BJP in a straight contest anywhere in four years. Gandhi went about the task methodically by identifying weaknesses and bridging gaps. He sought to beat Modi at his own game by expanding social media

outreach and connecting with the audiences through witty, hard-hitting tweets and posts. Gandhi consistently attacked Modi on issues linked to the common man — corruption, unemployment, farmers distress, demonetisation, price rise — and stepped up his efforts to portray the BJP leader as a “friend of the rich”. He attacked the BJP on national security — a key plank of the ruling party — highlighting how the government had been “silent” on the Chinese build up near the Doklam site and its “failure” over the continued infiltration from Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. Gandhi sought to demolish the perception that Modi was “personally incorruptible” by taking repeated jibes at him over the Rafale fighter jet deal with France. He single-handedly made Rafale deal a national issue through press conferences, tweets and speeches and attacked
Modi with “chowkidar is chor” (the guard is the thief) barb. He travelled abroad to counter Modi’s outreach among the diaspora. Gandhi’s consistent articulation of issues, including job losses caused by demonetisation and the slowing down of economy due to “flawed implementation” of the Goods and Services Tax, seemingly put the government on the defensive. The GST, which was simplified in the run-up to the Gujarat assembly polls last year, has been further eased after the BJP lost power in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Gandhi aggressively clamoured for farm loan waivers and several state governments are likely to opt for the measure before the 2019 general elections. Gandhi had been attacking Modi earlier too but his elevation as party chief sharpened his attacks. Simultaneously, he addressed organisational issues, effecting changes in his team at the All India Congress Committee to create a combination of experience and youth. Thus, the Old Guard, including Ambika Soni, Ahmed Patel and Moti-
lal Vora are part of the AICC team that also has several young leaders such as Jitendra Singh and R.P.N. Singh as incharge of states. Gandhi strove to give the party general secretaries one state each to bring more focus on their work and ensured that party secretaries, mostly young leaders, were given specific responsibilities. Realising that the Congress would need as much support as possible to oust the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance from power, Gandhi changed the Congress stance of projecting him as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2019 elections and said the decision will be taken after the polls. He has been interacting with opposition leaders to build a common platform against the Modi government, a role which was initially perceived to be that of his mother and UPA chairpeson Sonia Gandhi. To improve the party’s outreach among the vast informal sector, he created All India Unorganised Workers Congress. He also strengthened party’s efforts to get the support of youth, women, professionals, fishermen, tribaIs and scheduled castes.
A Data Analytics Department was created to study voters, workers and ground-level issues in a better way. The thought to detail in working of the party is evident from the way All India Unorganised Workers Congress has been shaped with separate coordinators for NGOs and government projects, legal matters, auto rickshaw, rickshaw pullers, construction workers, the self-employed and domestic workers. Gandhi also reached out to people directly through the social media. “You cannot control social media. Gandhi has been gaining followers and his messages and posts are widely followed. Earlier BJP was setting the agenda and Congress was responding but now it is the reverse,” a Congress leader who did not want to be identified said. As party chief, Gandhi has run far more elaborate and sustained assembly election campaigns than did Sonia Gandhi, who helmed the Congress for 19 years. He sprang a surprise in his efforts to project the BJP as divisive and made its leaders an-
gry when he walked to Modi during the debate on no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha and hugged him. He also openly said that BJP leaders may call him “pappu” but he does not hate the party. Realising how the Congress could not form governments in Goa and Manipur despite being the single-largest party, Gandhi moved swiftly in Karnataka earlier this year and entered into alliance with Janata DalSecular to keep the BJP out of power. But the challenges that remain for him are herculean. The Congress lost six assembly elections this year – Telangana, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland – despite the three wins in Hindi heartland and managing to be a partner of the ruling coalition in Karnataka. It is not in power in any state in the northeast, a party stronghold only four years ago. It is weak in the crucial states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and needs allies to win seats. Next year is likely to be a make or break year for Congress, as the country goes to general polls.

Anti-Sikh riots petitioner H.S. Phoolka resigns from AAP New Delhi (IANS): Senior advocate H.S. Phoolka on Thursday submitted his resignation from the Aam Aadmi Party to party chief Arvind Kejriwal. Phoolka, representing the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, thanked Kejriwal for giving him an opportunity to “serve the party”.
“I have resigned from AAP and handed over the resignation to Kejriwal ji today. Though he asked me not to resign, I insisted,” he said. The former Punjab MLA said he would explain the reason of leaving AAP and his further plans later. Phoolka, who joined AAP in
2014 and was voted to Punjab Assembly from Dakha, had resigned from the Assembly as an MLA in October last year. He had announced that he would resign from the Assembly if the Congress government in Punjab led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh did not take action against those behind the
incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and the police firing in October 2015 on those protesting against the sacrilege incidents. Phoolka has demanded the government should register cases against former Chief Minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh

Congress claims massive win in Punjab panchayat polls Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday hailed the sweeping Congress victory in the just concluded panchayat polls in the state. Describing it as a victory of democracy and a clear vindication of his government’s policies, Amarinder Singh pointed out that 80.38 per cent out of the over 1.27 crore [12.7 million] eligible voters exercised their
franchise in the panchayat elections held on Sunday. “Of the 13,175 sarpanches (village headman) elected so far, 11,241 belong to the Congress, with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accounting for only 981 and 100 respectively. Other smaller parties and independents accounted for 813 of the elected sarpanches,” he said in a statement here.
“The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered another ignominious electoral defeat, indicating that it had become completely irrelevant and was a non-entity in Punjab,” he added. The Chief Minister congratulated the people of Punjab for ensuring a largely peaceful poll with record polling percentage. Of the 17,268 booths in which polling was held, re-poll was ordered in a mere 14, the Chief
Minister pointed out, lauding the security forces for maintaining law and order during the elections “despite attempts by the opposition to trigger trouble”. “Undeterred by the false propaganda unleashed by the opposition parties against the Congress government, the voters came out in large numbers without fear to cast their votes in favour of (Congress) candidates,” he added.
“This shows that the disillusionment of the electorate with the SAD and other opposition parties, including the BJP and AAP, was complete. The people of Punjab were no longer willing to be misled by the canards being spread by these parties,” he said. Amarinder Singh said that the panchayat polls indicated the palpable pro-Congress mood in the state ahead of the Lok
Sabha elections. “The negative campaigning of the opposition, which was clearly bereft of any positive agenda, had also contributed to the Congress victory in the panchayat elections and would continue to stand the party in good stead in the Lok Sabha polls,” he added. The Congress came to power after Assembly elections in March 2017.
Punjab cabinet approves plan to provide smartphones to youth Chandigarh (IANS): Despite the state being under a massive financial crunch, the Punjab cabinet on Wednesday approved modalities for providing smartphones to youth in the state. The promise to provide smartphones to youth, numbering around 5 million, was made by the Congress party in its pre-poll manifesto before assembly elections in February 2017. “The state cabinet, at its meeting on Wednesday, approved the modalities for the distribution of the smart phones, with graduating students of government schools, colleges and technical institutions to be covered in the first phase of the scheme,” according to
an official spokesperson. The students would be required to submit self-certification stating that they do not already possess a smartphone, he added. The scheme, which will give a further impetus to the state government’s digital empowerment agenda, will provide for distribution of mobile phones with various smart features, such as touch screen, camera and applications to access social media, the spokesperson said. “In addition, one-time bundled 12 GB data and 600 local minutes talk time (voice) with one year validity would also be provided under the scheme,” he added. The first batch of phones is
expected to be distributed in March. The Punjab government had announced a scheme named ‘Mobile Phone to the Youth’ in its budget for the Financial Year 201718 with the objective of providing digital access to youth and information regarding education, career opportunities, access to skill development and employment opportunities and basic citizen centric services through government applications. The state government had appointed KPMG as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) at a cost of Rs 72.19 lakh [Rs. 7.2 million] for the duration of the project. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was under fire from op-
position parties for not fulfilling the promise to provide smart-

Free of cost blood in Punjab hospitals from January 1 Chandigarh (IANS): Blood is now being provided free of cost in government hospitals across Punjab. Health and Family Welfare Minister Brahm Mohindra said that as part of the government’s mission ‘Tandarust Punjab’, all the government hospitals across the state will provide blood and blood components free of cost to patients.
“Not only shall be blood provided free of cost, it will also be ensured that the blood is available round the clock in all the hospitals,” the Minister said in a statement here. Mohindra said that this move would benefit thousands of patients across Punjab as they earlier had to pay processing charges of Rs 300 per unit of blood in civil hospitals and Rs
500 per unit in government medical colleges. “From now, blood and blood components like packed RBC, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, platelets rich plasma and platelet concentrate will be given free of cost to all the patients,” he said. The blood, he pointed out, is the first important requirement in case of the road accidents or the patients
Amarinder ridicules BJP over ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’
Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday ridiculed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “desperate efforts” to promote ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ ahead of the Lok Sabha elections as a political stunt aimed at demeaning the Congress. In a statement, the Chief Minister said the BJP was indulging in “cheap politics” against the Congress, which was riding a wave of success as manifest in its recent victories in several state elections.
Amarinder described the BJP’s attempt to use the movie, which seeks to project two-time Prime Minister Manmo-
han Singh as a weak and docile prime minister, as “not only childish but brazenly politically motivated”. “The use of the movie’s recently released trailer by the BJP, which was tweeted from the party’s official twitter handle and promoted by many of its leaders on the social media, to criticize Dr Singh at this important political juncture in India’s journey clearly showed their desperation and frustration in the face of their imminent defeat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” the Chief Minister said. Lambasting the BJP for resorting to cheap politics to strengthen their electoral chances,
Amarinder asked it to “accept the harsh reality that they had lost the support of the people”. “Even the worst critics of Dr. Singh could not find fault with him and the BJP was merely using the movie, slated to release next month, as a pawn in a futile attempt to undermine the Congress in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections,” he added. The Chief Minister said that Manmohan Singh was an internationally acclaimed economist and a visionary leader who had been elevated to be the country’s Prime Minister for 10 years (2004-2014) by the Congress party based on his abilities and capabilities.

The Minister said that in the last few years, 2.26 lakh [226,000] units of blood were collected by government blood banks. He added that to streamline health services, the Punjab government has launched a web portal ‘E-Raktkosh’ to
facilitate availability of blood. This web facility would be a guiding source for all the needy persons to check the availability of particular blood group and blood components and its quantity in a particular blood bank, he added.

Celebrities who bid us goodbye in 2018
New Delhi (IANS): From superstar Sridevis untimely death to demise of Marvel creator Stan Lee , the year of 2018 was a tough year for Bollywood and Hollywood as the industries have lost some of the best known and well-loved figures. So before welcoming the new year, let’s remember some of those “unforgettable” names we have lost and celebrate their contribution to cinema, music and art. ·Sridevi February 24, 2018 would always be considered a dark day for the Indian film fraternity as on this date, the world woke up to the sad news that Sridevi, Bollywood’s first female superstar is no more. The “Chandni” star, who was in Dubai for a family wedding, died aged 54 accidentally drowning in a bath tub in a hotel, leaving the film industry, her family and legions of fans in a state of shock. Though she is no more, she will always be remembered for her remarkable work in Indian cinema. Born in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu on August 13, 1963, Sridevi began her career at the age of four in the devotional film “Thunaivan”. That marked the beginning of a journey in filmdom that saw her work across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi productions, leading her to become one of the most formidable actresses of the 1980s and 1990s in Bollywood -- in fact, the only female “superstar” the industry has seen. And for her great contribution to the country’s art and cinema, she was honoured with the National Award and Padma Shri. The year, no doubt left her fans in grief and tears with her sudden death, but also surprised them with the launch of the icon’s elder daughter Janhvi Kapoor in Hindi cinema, bringing shades of Sridevi back onscreen. ·Stan Lee Stan Lee, a man who revolutionised comic books and created superheroes characters such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the Incredible Hulk, died on November 12. Born as Stanley Lieber on December 28, 1922, Lee began his career at what was then Timely Comics in 1939. Over the years he was a writer, editor and occasional illustrator. He joined the Marvel Comics in 1961. He often made appearances at comic book conventions and lectured at colleges. Lee continued to play an important role as Marvel transitioned into television during the 1980s, serving as narrator on animated series like “Incredible Hulk”. Lee also made cameos in a total of 26 movies, beginning with “The Trial of the Incredible Hulk” in 1989 and ending with 2018’s “Venom”. Before his death, Lee completed cameos in several upcoming films, including one for Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet”. He is survived by his daughter Joan Celia “J.C.” Lee. ·Rita Bhaduri Veteran actress Rita Bhaduri took her last breath on July 17 this year. She was 62 when she died of kidney ailment. With a career spanning over five decades, Rita played important supporting parts in movies like “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa”, “Kya Kehna”, “Dil Vil Pyar Vyar” and “Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon”. She also featured in Gujarati movies. On the TV front, her credits include popular shows like “Hasratein”, “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai”, “Khichdi”, “Ek Nayi Pehchaan”. She was last seen in the serial “Nimki Mukhiya” in which she played the role of a grandmother. ·Aretha Franklin Legendary singer Aretha Franklin, who got the epithet ‘Queen of Soul’, died in August after battling serious health conditions. She was 76. Franklin rose to fame with the release of her first album, “Songs of Faith”, in 1956, which scored regional hits with two gospel songs and occa-
sionally touring with The Soul Stirrers, whose star was Sam Cooke. In a professional career that spanned more than half a century, Franklin’s songs were not just chart-toppers, but also gave out a message. Her song “Respect” was a call to arms, while “(You make me feel like) A natural woman” was an earthy expression of sexuality and “Think” was a rallying cry for women fed up with loutish men. She even won a Golden Globe award for “Never gonna break my faith”. The singer’s final public performance was last November, when she sang at an Elton John AIDS Foundation gala in New York. ·Mohammed Aziz “My name is Lakhan” fame singer Mohammed Aziz died on November 27 following a cardiac arrest. He was 64. Born in West Bengal as Syed Mohammed Azizun-Nabi in July 1954, he started his career as a restaurant singer in Kolkata till he got a singing break in a Bengali film, “Jyoti”, before he shifted to Mumbai and sang for the Hindi film “Ambar” (1984). Later, he was spotted by music director Anu
Malik and got his first major breakthrough in Bollywood with the song “Mard Taangewala” (“Mard”, 1984). Subsequently, he sang for top music directors
like Naushad, O.P. Nayyar, Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri, R.D. Burman, Rajesh Roshan, Ravindra Jain, Raam-Laxman.

Are you taking these medicines too long?
WHAT will be your 2019 New Year’s resolution? Losing weight? Finally deciding to get off the couch and get more exercise? Hopefully to convince yourself smoking means 20 years less life? These are all healthy ways to start the year. But I’d like to add another New Year’s Resolution. Many North Americans are taking medicines for the long run when they’re only intended for the short run. This can have a huge impact on well-being. The January Reports on Health claims that one-third of Americans over the age of 55 take too many medications. Michael Steinman, an expert on aging and Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, says, “Some medicine are more effective and safest when you use them for a specific and limited period of time.” So what are some of the major drugs being taken too long, and what can happen when they are? Most readers don’t need Professor Steinman or me to tell them there’s a raging lethal epidemic of opioid drugs. Chad M. Brummett, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Uni-
versity of Michigan, says this addiction can happen in as little as seven days. A study by Brummett, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Surgery, says, “six percent of patients prescribed an opioid drug after surgery for minor procedures are still taking them six months later.” And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, taking an opioid for longer than three months increases addiction risk 15 times. This information should be posted on the front door of every doctor’s office. Patients should stop being wimps after minor surgery and use commonsense about this potent painkiller. Experts say opioids should be the last resort for chronic or minor pain, but if prescribed, it should be a low dose for a short period of time. And that doctors should suggest other pain options such as Advil, Motrin and Aleve. It’s also hard to believe that 14 percent of those between 65 to 80 years of age use either prescription or overthe-counter sleeping aids. Dr. Raj Dasgupta, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California, reports these medications have greater effect on older people making them more susceptible to confusion and memory problems. They also double the risk of falls and hip fractures in the elderly. Authorities claim the better solution is referral to a sleep therapist. This is easier said than done, as many communities don’t have such care-givers to calm the mind. And I’ve found in practice that sleep labs, even after numerous tests, still can’t solve this trouble. I’ve helped some patients by telling them to get up earlier in the morning, be active throughout the day and read a book until they fall asleep. Society also needs a wakeup call when 17 million North Americans require daily heartburn drugs such as
Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec. Dr. Nicholas Shaheen, Chief of Gastroenterology at the University of North Carolina, reports “doctors start patients on these drugs and do not advise stopping them even when symptoms get better.” Taking these drugs for a year or more increases the risk of heart attack, dementia and bone fractures. Moreover, a study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology in 2016, showed that patients on heartburn drugs for five years had a 28 percent higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease. The solution necessitates playing the same song over and over to get the message across. Namely, it’s prudent to take the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time. This means tapering off slowly when symptoms subside. Or switch to a less potent drug at this time, such as Tums, Pepcid or Zantac. Are you feeling congested and using an over-the-counter decongestant spray? Sprays shrink nasal tissue quickly, and
are less likely than oral decongestants to increase blood pressure. But they should be used for only three days in a row. Studies show many people use them daily for a year. This can result in dependency on them which can also increase heart rate. All the best for 2019 and remember that with drugs less is usually better. The Predator (PG) ****
Hide and Kill!
Hide and seek is a classic kids game. Add an alien whose not quite of the E.T. mould and odds are good something bad may happen. Something evil comes your way in The Predator. Even the name sounds haunting as 20th Century Fox goes all in with this thriller now freaking folks out in the comfort (?) of their own homes in DVD and Blu-ray across B.C. Worth the wait is this unbelievable journey that effectively continues the chills served up in the original Predator a la Arnold. Mr. Schwarzenegger and fans alike should be behind the vision put forth by new director Shane Black. Sparkling dialogue and interesting characters serve the
story well as we first see an alien encounter some soldiers and years later that space thing comes back to Earth on its own mission. Snatch and grab takes on a whole new meaning as it’s the army versus the alien who somehow has gotten even more powerful than before. Slick humour further ramps up the fun as the space angle and the special effects perfectly mesh with the pacing in this terrifying
journey. Danger lurks everywhere and with way out stunts audiences are put directly in the line of fire. Add on crazed scientists and freaky military type officials who may have their own secret agendas and you have lots of things going on and coming at you so better stay clear. Oh and let’s not forget one crazed alien killing machine who may be no match for us mere mortal earthlings. Game on!

2018 Honda Clarity: Great Fuel Economy from Plug in Hybrid.
By Autoreviewman Honda have now made a pledge that twothirds of all their vehicle line up will be electric powered in some form by 2030. And to that note we welcome the new 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). This is a four door sedan with five passenger seating that’s has been available in California as hydrogen fuel cell and fully electric vehicle (EV) for the last few months. The Clarity comes in two trim levels for Canada with the base Clarity starting at $39,900 with the top line Touring Trim starting at $43,900. It may sound expensive, but there are some great rebates to be had from Canadian provinces if you purchase a hybrid or electric car. Both Clarity models come extremely well equipped with features such as blind spot alert, adaptive cruise and lane-keep assist as standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android auto.
Power for the Clarity is via a 1.5-litre Atkinsoncycle inline four-cylinder engine with two electric motors for a combined 181 hp and 232 lb/ft of torque. The gas engine produces 103 hp and 99 lb/ft of torque on its own. A 17 kWh electric battery pack stores the electric charge. Charging the battery pack takes just 2.5 hours when connected to a 220 volt charging station but will take 12 hours when trickle charging on a normal 110 volt outlet. A full
charge will give the Clarity an electric driving range of 76 km with a total drive range with the gasoline engine of 547 km. Fuel economy for the Clarity is rated at: 5.3/5.9/L/100 km (city/highway gas only), 2.1L/100 km (combined electric/gas). In addition, the Clarity’s regenerative brakes also supply power to the battery to be stored for later use. Interior wise the Honda Clarity features a tidy, neat cabin with premium materials, excellent fit and finish of all panels and fine detailing makes for a very fine cabin. Front seat are both supportive and comfortable and there
is good legroom and headroom in both front and rear. The rear set can handle three medium sized adults, while the trunk offers a capacity of 439 litres. I really like the Clarity and hope it does well, I think it will as for one thing, its feels substantial and roomy, many hybrid cars are too small and feel as if things have been compromised. The Clarity does not feel like that. Highly recommended if an eco-friendly sedan is on your horizon. 2018 Honda Clarity PHEV: Base price $39,900; (Plus government rebates)
