India, Pakistan must start new chapter: Mirwaiz Umar Srinagar (IANS): Senior religious and separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday urged India and Pakistan to start “a new chapter” and told the Modi government that the Kashmir issue needed “a peaceful and political solution”. Delivering the Eid sermon at the historic Jamia Masjid in the old city’s Nowhatta area here, Mirwaiz Umar said: “We want to remind the new political dispensation in India that the Kashmir issue is a reality which cannot be wisher away. “It needs a peaceful and political solution. We are ready to extend a helping hand and support a peaceful dialogue between the two countries,” he said. “We demand that the present military approach against our youth

be stopped. “I pray that today’s Eid, being celebrated in the entire subcontinent, should bring the message

of peace, friendship, well being and prosperity for the people of India, Pakistan and Kashmir. “We pray that the people of India and Pakistan start a new chapter today, forgetting the bitterness and mistrust of the past. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir and their leadership wants that we should become a bridge of friendship between the two countries. “We demand and expect that all the CBMs (ConfidenceBuilding Measures) like SrinagarMuzaffarabad trade, people-topeople contacts which have been put on hold are restored. We don’t expect these CBMs to be restored only between the two parts of Kashmir but want such CBMs to be announced between India and Pakistan as well.”

New Delhi (IANS): Hit hard by the five-year low GDP growth and a 45year high unemployment rate of 6.1 per cent, the newly formed Modi government swung into action and on Wednesday, as it formed two new cabinet committees to check the declining trend in growth and employment and spur demand as well as consumption. A five-member cabinet panel on investment and growth has members which include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Government’s other panel which will look at the unemployment issue -- Cabinet Committee on Employment and Skill Development

-- has 10 members. This committee apart from Shah, Sitharaman and Goyal has Minister of Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar, Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank,’ Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Skill and Entrepreneurship Mahendra Nath Pandey and ministers of state Santosh Kumar Gangwar (Labour) and Hardeep Singh Puri (Housing and Urban Affairs). Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg has already said the slowdown of Q4 could persist in the Q1 of the current fiscal. The numbers were unimpressive. The fourth quarter GDP growth (January-March) is at 5.8%, a 17-quarter low while the same day

a government report of joblessness pegged it at the highest in 45 years. These macroeconomic figures released last month - GDP growth, unemployment numbers and core sector data - laid bare the enormous challenges the Modi 2.0 team faces in resurrecting the slackening economy and restoring the confidence of investors. In March the IIP fell to 21-months low. The fourth-quarter GDP growth for 2018-19 came in at 5.8 per cent, way below 8 per cent recorded in the same quarter the previous fiscal, lower than the 6.6 per cent growth in Q3. The Labour Ministry data revealed joblessness in the country was 6.1 per cent of total labour force during 2017-18, the highest in 45 years.

Declare 550th Parkash Parb as National Tolerance Day: Punjab Chief Minister

Modi government forms two cabinet panels to check falling growth, employment

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the 550th Parkash Parb of Guru Nanak Dev as National Tolerance Day, an official said on Monday. Singh wrote a letter Modi seeking that the auspicious day be declared National Tolerance Day for the rededication of people to Guru Nanak Dev’s message of love, compassion and tolerance, according to a government spokesperson. Since the teachings of the first Sikh guru are as relevant today as they were in his times, the 550th Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Nanak Dev, to be observed on November 12, should be declared as National Tolerance Day as a befitting tribute to the great Master, said the Chief Minister. He suggested that the birth anniversary of the first Guru be observed in this manner every year thereafter.

National Security Adviser Doval gets extension, promoted to Cabinet rank New Delhi (IANS): National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, who oversaw at least two cross-border military actions during the last five years, has been accorded an upgrade in his level to the Cabinet rank along with an extension of five years, co-terminus with the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Doval, a 74-year-old former Intelligence Bureau chief, held the rank of Minister of State (MoS) till now.

The new order is applicable with effect from May 31, 2019, according to the June 2 decision of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. “His (Doval’s) appointment will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” said an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel. During the term, the order said, Doval will be assigned the rank of “Cabinet Minister in the table of Precedence”.

A 1968-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Doval was also the first police officer to receive Kirti Chakra in 1988. He was appointed as the fifth NSA in 2014. In its first innings,

the Modi government conducted two important cross-border anti-terror operations under Doval’s watch. In September 2016, the Indian Army retaliated to a terror attack on an Army camp in Kashmir’s Uri with surgical strikes at terror camps across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistanoccupied Kashmir. On February 26 this year, the Air Force conducted aerial strikes at a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror camp in Balakot in

Pakistan after a ghastly terror attack in Kashmir’s Pulwama killed 40 CRPF personnel on February 14. Prior to the planning of these operations, Doval also played a crucial role in ensuring the secure return of 46 Indian nurses, who were trapped in a hospital in war-torn Iraq. Doval’s deep understanding and execution of counter-terror operations and his stint in Pakistan as India’s top intelligence sleuth are seen as vital assets

for national security. Informed sources said that Doval and newly-appointed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar would be the two prominent faces of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the diplomatic and strategic fronts, both having vast experience in South East and South Asian strategic affairs. Doval and Jaishankar earlier played a key role in bringing the Obama administration closer to Modi-led India.

She also has a message for her fellow students. “One should never get disappoint with lesser marks. I have scored low in my earlier exams in school. Although I was shocked after receiving low grades, but then I learnt from my failure to attain this score,” she added. She also said: “My father could not study in his life... however, he motivated me to study.” He also taught me how difficult life is without becoming literate, she added.

Eid celebrated with gaiety in India, J&K sees some clashes New Delhi (IANS): Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, was on Wednesday celebrated across India with religious fervour and gaiety, barring some places in Jammu and Kashmir where clashes erupted between stone-pelting youths and security forces after special festival prayers. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among leaders who greeted the people on the occasion. The Prime Minister specially wished people in both English and Urdu through his Twitter account.

“May this special day ignite the spirit of harmony, compassion and peace in our society. May everyone be blessed with happiness,” Modi tweeted in English. The tweet in Urdu read: “Eid-ul-Fitr ke parmusarrat mauqe par mubarakbaad. Khuda kare ke yeh khususi din, hamare mashre mein ham-aahang, rahm-dili aur aman ke jazbat ko farogh de. Har kas-o-nakas ki zindagi musarraton se hamkinar ho.” Lakhs of people thronged hundreds of small and big mosques and Eidgah maidans across India, especially Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab,

Jharkhand, Maharashtra, as well as the northeastern and southern states, to celebrate the occasion, marking the end of 30-day fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Pakistan Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood, who is the former High Commissioner to India and was in India a private visit, offered prayers at Delhi’s 17th century Jama Masjid with his children. A minor accident, however, occurred in the national capital when a motorist rammed his car into devotees emerging from a mosque in city’s Khureji area but police said no one was injured. Scene of communal harmony marked the celebration in Hyderabad where non-Muslims joined their Muslim brethren at Eidgah or open grounds where ‘Namaz-e-Eid’ was offered in the morning. The Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) exchanged greetings, flowers and sweets on the occasion. According to a BSF official, senior officials of BSF and BGB accompanied by locally posted troopers greeted each other at many places along the 4,096-km Bangladesh frontier in West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Mizoram and Meghalaya. With the monsoon yet to set in, special morning prayers were held in open places in Kerala and drew huge crowds. Many wore new dresses and greeted one another after the prayers. At all centres in the state, there were separate

enclosures for women and children. At the popular Palayam Grand Mosque, the Shahi Imam, in his sermon, spoke against terrorism and extreme nationalism. Mutton and beef stalls were crowded at most places since late Tuesday. Mutton prices soared to Rs 800 a kilo while beef was priced at Rs 380. At Kochi, superstar Mammootty turned up at an Eid prayer session and interacted with the devout. Except Jammu and Kashmir, the festival was celebrated peacefully almost across India. In Srinagar, scores of masked men displaying Islamic State, and Pakistan national flags appeared on the streets of the old city’s Nowhatta area and raised pro-Pakistan slogans. Immediately after the Eid prayers, scores of masked men came out with IS and Lashkar-e-Taiba flags and raised slogans like “Musa, Musa, Zakir Musa”, “Hum Kya Chahte Azadi, Azadi”, “Pakistan Zindabad” and displaying posters carrying pictures of militants. They marched through the streets, and dozens of other youths joined them until security forces intercepted them after half a kilometre from the Jamia Masjid. The marchers then pelted stones at the security forces, who resorted to teargas and pellet guns to disperse the crowd. Clashes were also witnessed in Sopore, Anantnag and Kupwara towns in the Kashmir Valley after Eid prayers.

Assam police ‘high’ on humour after huge ganja catch New Delhi (IANS): Assam Police have earned praise from people around the country for a humourous tweet that it posted after seizing 590 kg of ganja. “Anyone lost a huge (590 kg) amount of cannabis/ganja and a truck in and around Chagolia checkpoint last night? Don’t panic, we found it. Please get in touch with @Dhubri_ Police. They will help you out, for sure ;) Great job Team Dhubri,” read the message from the Assam Police Twitter handle on Tuesday. The post is accompanied by a picture of

stacks of cannabis placed on top of one another. People lauded the team for the huge catch. But the humorous twist in the tale left the Twitterati in splits. The tweet which has been liked over 19,000 times so far, has also been commended by stand-up comedian Papa CJ. He posted clap emojis on a tweet addressed to the @assampolice “for the job done and the sense of humour :)” Assam Police lapped up the comment from

the comedian. “You know you have arrived when Asia’s Best Stand-up comic appreciates your humour! Thank you @PapaCJ , you are a kind (& funny) soul,” a tweet from Assam Police said on Wednesday. While police often bring up the image of a coercive force, such humorous tweets have done well to connect with thousands. Social Media Consultant Salik Khan who works for both Assam Police and Meghalaya Police later posted a link related to the tweet.

Computer Baba takes charge in Madhya Pradesh, demands chopper Bhopal (IANS): Namdev Das Tyagi, aka, Computer Baba, who joined office at the state secretariat here as chairman of the NarmadaMandakini-Kshipra trust with ministerial rank on Tuesday, did not waste even an hour after taking charge to demand a helicopter within a week to inspect the Narmada River. Tyagi assumed charge amid rituals and chanting of mantras in the presence of former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, state Law Minister P.C. Sharma and a few religious functionaries. No one should be surprised if the Baba gets a chopper to survey the Narmada. The baba said he wants the job expedited. Any other means would delay action.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath had handed the job of rejuvenating the holy river to Tyagi, saying the river would get a new life. “We will form a Narmada Sena for the task. The previous Shivraj Chouhan government was corrupt to the core,” Nath had said. He said there should be no objection to ‘babas’ coming into the government. There is one already running a state government, he had said, referring to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. ‘Computer Baba’ had campaigned for Digviajaya Singh during the recent Lok Sabha elections. He had conducted a havan to ensure Singh’s victory. He had also announced that Prime MInister Narendra Modi would

lose the Lok Sabha Election and that BJP would never win. The results are out now and the state government’s persistence with the mumbo-jumbo of godmen is drawing derisive comments from people. After the Congress was trounced, the Baba said the sanyasis (seers) don’t support any political party. They stand by the religion while the parties come and go. On May 9 the Bhopal police had lodged a police report

against the Baba, ironically, on a complaint from the BJP saying the Baba was fanning communal sentiments. On May 7 he had performed ‘Hath Yoga’ and performed a ‘chillies havan mahyagna’ along with Digvijaya Singh and his wife to ensure Singh’s victory. This had prompted the Election Commission to serve a notice on him for violation of Model Code of Conduct. The Baba promptly said he had not invited the Singh couple to the havan. “I don’t know whether Singh and his wife were present at the spot or not. I didn’t invite them. The camp was set up from the donations received,” the Baba said. The Baba has been in and

out of news and governments of rival parties in the state in the name of guarding the interest of the people on the banks of the Narmada. Over a year ago when former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had carried out a yatra along the river and claimed to have planted six crore [60 million] saplings on the banks, the Baba was up in arms against government’s alleged corruption and for polluting the sacred river by conniving with sand mining mafia. Chouhan had inducted him in a panel to rejuvenate the river and accorded him ministerial rank. He was often seen hobnobbing with the press in the coffee house

of Bhopal. Baba’s demands continued to rise and finally, he left the ministry ahead of assembly elections to campaign for the Congress. He started accusing the BJP of being irreligious and said Shivraj was ignoring the cause of cow protection. This was when one of his rival baba was appointed a cabinet minister in the ministry for cow protection. He was among the prominent invitees during the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Kamal Nath. Computer Baba was appointed chairman of a trust by the Congress on March 10. To avoid action for violation of electoral code, he had delayed taking charge till after the elections.

It was an experiment that failed: Akhilesh Yadav Lucknow (IANS): Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday admitted that his alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was “an experiment that failed”. “I have been a science student. There are experiments and sometimes they

fail... But at least you realize what went wrong. But, today, I will say what I said when we announced the alliance -- respect to Mayawatiji is respect to me,” he said. He added: “As far as the alliance is concerned, if we have to contest alone in the

Uttar Pradesh by-elections, I will consult my party leaders on our future strategy.” BSP President Mayawati announced on Tuesday that her party would contest the coming by-elections in 11 Assembly seats alone and would review her decision to call off the alliance “only

Industries must adhere to environment rules: Punjab Chief Minister Ropar (IANS): Taking a tough stand on environment protection, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday called for collective efforts by every citizen to check pollution, while stressing on the need to be stricter with industries on adherence to environmental standards. Speaking at a function here to mark the World Environment Day that coincided with the first anniversary of the government’s flagship health project - Mission Tandarust Punjab, the Chief Minister underlined the importance of an apolitical approach to addressing environmental concerns to provide sustainable atmosphere. The government can make policies and imple-

ment them, but the realisation about the need for personal efforts by one and all, and stricter observance of environmental norms by industries, is equally important to achieve sustainability goals, he said. Noting that this year’s World Environment Day coincided with the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, who always advocated environment protection, he announced the launch of a project by the year-end for cleaning Buddah Nullah. The Chief Minister said saving the environment was the responsibility of each one. He also underlined the responsibility of the citizens in conservation of ground water, which was depleting fast in Punjab.

Pointing to reports suggesting that the state will become a desert in 20 years, he lamented that free power and free water had led to wastage, making it necessary for farmers to realise their

responsibility on this count. He recalled his own experience while flying to Amritsar, when he saw a clean Beas contrasted with a dirty Satluj, whose water was brackish due to pollution from nearby cities, towns and industries. The State Pollution Control Board was doing its best to reverse the situation but the people need to pitch in with their efforts, said Amarinder Singh. On the government’s part, he had once again ordered a stop on plantation of the water-consuming Eucalyptus trees along the roadside, which he had also banned in his earlier tenure. He urged people to plant traditional trees like ‘jamun’ and mango to save the environment.

in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) implementation and help alleviate problems faced by businesses. In his letter, Singh congratulated Modi on his spectacular win in the recent Lok Sabha elections and welcomed his resolve to speedily take the country on a trajectory of high growth and social justice. The Chief Minister said he looked forward to working with Modi to bring prosperity to the people of India as well as the state. Specifically, the Chief Minister made several suggestions to help improve state GST collections and narrow their revenue deficit. Ac-

called for, ideally, a single GST rate, but said it should include not more than two rates for any chapter and not more than one rate at four-digit level of any chapter sub-heading. “This will ensure harmonisation of tax rate across similar supplies and avoid classification disputes besides opportunities to evade,” he said giving the example of different tax rates under various modes of transport. The Chief Minister has also suggested widening the GST net to include electricity, real estate and petroleum to make it a win-win situation for the states as well as businesses.

cording to him, State Goods and Service Tax rate should be higher than Central Goods and Service Tax so that the states do not suffer huge deficits. He also suggested an amnesty scheme to overcome the aberrations that led to serious confusion in the business circles in the initial phase of GST implementation, and said there was no need to continue with VAT legacy issues, which should find a sunset clause. Pointing out that India had the dubious distinction of being among the five countries in the world that have four or more non-zero GST rates, the Chief Minister

Pro-Khalistan slogans to mark Operation Bluestar anniversary Amritsar (IANS): Tension prevailed in this Sikh holy city of Punjab on Thursday as hardliners, brandishing swords, raised pro-Khalistan slogans inside the Golden Temple complex on the culmination of special prayers to mark the 35th anniversary of Operation Bluestar. Thousands of devotees early in the morning thronged the

Akal Takht -- the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion -- to attend the ‘bhog’ ceremony of religious prayers that began on June 4. The prayers were to mark the anniversary of Operation Bluestar that was carried out in June 1984 by the Indian Army to flush out heavily armed terrorists from inside the Golden Temple complex.

Security agencies were put on high alert in and around this city in view of the anniversary. Punjab Police, paramilitary forces and intelligence personnel were stationed at different locations across the city, particularly around the Golden Temple complex. Dal Khalsa called for a shutdown in Amritsar to protest against the Army action.

Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Gobind Singh Longowal had appealed to the public to maintain peace while observing the anniversary. A day ahead of the anniversary, the Jathedar said Parliament should accept that the attack carried out on the direc-

tions of the Indian government was a blunder and should submit an official apology for it. “The Indian Parliament should bring ‘maafi da matta’ (an apology resolution) for the execution of Ghallughara (Operation Bluestar) in 1984,” he said in a statement. Parallel Jathedar of Akal Takht, Dhian Singh Mand, participated in the culmination event.

Pro-Khalistan groups like the Dal Khalsa and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) led by Simranjit Singh Mann held ‘remembrance marches’ in the city. On the anniversary of Operation Bluestar in 2014, a clash between some Sikh activists and the task force of the SGPC had taken place in which several people were injured in the Golden Temple complex.

Sidhu divested of his portfolio; most Punjab ministers get new one with Navjot Singh Sidhu, who now gets Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources. His other previous portfolios of Tourism and Cultural Affairs goes to Charanjit Singh Channi, who retains Technical Education, Industrial Training and Employment General, with his Science and Technology portfolio taken over by the Chief Minister. Balbir Sidhu’s portfolio of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy has been entrusted, under the new scheme of things, to Tript Bajwa, along with Higher Education. Bajwa also retains Rural Development and Panchayats. However, Bajwa has been divested of Housing and Urban Development, which the Chief Minister has handed over to Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, in place of Revenue, which goes to Gurpreet Singh Kangar, who is also handling Rehabilitation and Disaster Management. Manpreet Singh Badal continues to take care of Finance, Planning and Programme Implementation, but the Chief Minister has decided to take Governance Reforms into his own fold. School Education has been shifted from Om

Prakash Soni to Vijay Inder Singla, who retains Public Works but hands over Information Technology to Captain Amarinder. Soni will now take care of Medical Education and Research, Freedom Fighters and Food Processing departments. In addition to Sports & Youth Affairs, Rana Gurmeet Sodhi will now also be in charge of NRI Affairs, which was under the Chief Minister’s purview earlier. Transport has been moved from Aruna Chowdhary’s basket and handed over to Razia Sultan, who retains Water Supply but has been divested of Higher Education. Aruna Chowdhary takes over the Social Security, Women and Child Development departments. The four ministers in whose portfolios no changes have been made are Sadhu Singh Dharamsot (Forests, Printing and Stationery, SC/BC Welfare), Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa (Cooperation, Jails), Sunder Sham Arora (Industries & Commerce), and Bharat Bhushan Ashu (Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs).

Chandigarh (IANS): Hours after the first state Cabinet meeting post Lok Sabha elections, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday evening juggled the portfolios of most of the ministers, including Navjot Singh Sidhu. Barring four ministers, there are some changes in the portfolios of all the ministers as a result of the reallocation, which the Chief Minister said would help further streamline the government system and processes and bring more transparency and efficacy to the various departments. With the Congress government in the state nearing its mid-term mark, Amarinder Singh hoped the exercise would also reenergise his team. The Chief Minister, who had hinted at changes in the portfolios of his Council of Ministers after the completion of the poll process, has allocated the crucial Local Government to his senior-most colleague, Brahm Mohindra, who was earlier handling Health and Family Welfare, which has now been entrusted to Balbir Sidhu. Indo-Canadian Voice World Saturday, June. 08, 2019

I swore I’d never write about this again ABORTION became legal in Canada in 1969. I faced a dilemma. I had written a book titled “On Being A Woman, The Woman’s Guide to Gynecology”. It supported a woman’s right to control her own body, including the right to abortion. So I had two choices when doctors started referring patients to me for this procedure. I could change my mind about abortion to avoid censure. Or I could follow my own conscience. Thus, legal abortions became a part of my surgical practice. I entered

what I described in my biography “The Bastille years of my life”. They were difficult times. If I were a woman, I’d be mad as hell now, considering what is happening in the U.S. Several states are passing laws so restrictive that, in effect, they have banned abortion. And often it’s men who are at the forefront of this legislation. So, here’s what I learned about the hypocrisy and injustice of this contentious medical procedure. First, I was never involved in illegal abor-

tions. Rather, after they became legal my patients had to be referred to the hospital Therapeutic Abortion Committee (TAC), usually composed of men! On one occasion a 45-year-old Italian woman was referred to me. She had borne four daughters and was married to an abusive, alcoholic, unemployed man. I believed there was no sound reason why the committee would reject her case request. But they proved me wrong. Three male members rejected her application. The reason was, she had four girls and the next child might be a boy! Talk about male chauvinism! I’ve never forgotten another incident. One physician I knew well, a well-respected member of society, was vehemently opposed to abortion. I acknowledged his right to that position. But he and his colleagues conspired to deny me operating time. One day this same physician called me. He repeated his opposition to abortion. But then he said, “I have a young girl in my office. I’ve known her parents for years.” I knew what was coming next. The girl was pregnant. In this particular case he believed an abortion should be done! But that wasn’t all he had to say. Since he was the referring doctor, it was his job to write up the patient’s admission history on the hospital chart. My job was to write the consultant’s report. He then requested that I do him a favour and write up both so his name wouldn’t appear on the hospital chart. It was hypocrisy at its worst. On another occasion I had performed two operations on a colleague’s wife. But he advised me he would never again refer patients to me unless I stopped doing these procedures. And for months I endured pickets accusing me of being a murderer. My life was threatened several times. As I look back on those Bastille years I had more respect for Catholic priests who opposed me than the hypocrisy of colleagues who were involved with the Therapeutic Abortion Committee. Most days they would pass some cases and turn down others for no rhyme nor reason. The TAC reminded me of The Zuni Rain Dance. The tribe knew it did not bring rain, but it made the tribe feel better. It was a complete farce.

So why pick up the pen again on this contentious issue? I have always believed that every child brought into this world should be a wanted child. I wish that all women, and men, would have access to health services they need to prevent unwanted pregnancies. But this is not reality. Pregnancies will occur, and as a society, we must make abortions safe, affordable and accessible. Nor can I condone the fact that wealthy people can always travel elsewhere to obtain abortion while poor women suffer disastrous consequences. Prior to legalization some patients flew as far as Japan for the procedure. There will be no justice in abortion until it’s fairly applied to all women who want it. As an Arab proverb states, “One hour of justice is worth a hundred hours of prayer.” Online docgiff.com For comments: info@docgiff.com. What is the minor injury cap and what does it mean for my ICBC claim? AS ICBC claims lawyers the team at Simpson, Thomas & Associates have received numerous calls and questions regarding the new ICBC caps on minor injuries. The question is; what is the minor injury cap and what does it mean for my ICBC claim? The current provincial government has implemented legislation that limits recovery on the pain and suffering for accidents that happened after April 1, 2019. It is often referred to as the minor injury cap. The minor injury cap does not apply to wage loss or medical expenses. The minor injury cap applies only to injuries that are defined in the legislation. A minor injury is defined as: scrapes, bruises, sprains or strains (soft tissue injuries), and TMJ injuries (tempromandibular joint - the joint which connects your lower jaw to your skull) that do not cause “serious impairment” for longer than 12 months. “Serious impairment” is defined as being unable to complete the essential tasks of your job, school or activities of daily living for longer than 12 months. For work, this includes being unable to work full hours or complete your full job duties. Outside of work or school, your daily activities include

What does this mean for my ICBC claim? The minor injury cap only applies to accidents on or after April 1, 2019. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident after this date we anticipate that ICBC will tell you if your claim is designated under the minor injury cap. If you disagree with a minor injury designation you can challenge that designation through the Civil Resolution Tribunal. Personal injury

lawyers can help you in challenging a minor injury designation. house cleaning, cooking, shopping, transportation, personal hygiene or managing your personal finances. It is unclear how much of an impact is required for the court to consider it serious. The minor injury cap also applies to anxiety, PTSD, depression, and concussions. However, for these types of injuries, if the injured party is incapacitated for longer than 16 weeks the minor injury cap does not apply.

Harsimrat’s charges on drugs misleading: Amarinder Singh Chandigarh (IANS): Trashing Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s allegations that his government had failed to curb drugs menace, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said it was her Shiromani Akali Dal that was using a grave issue like drugs to divert public attention from their own shortcomings. Expressing shock at her “brazen lies” and “attempts to cover up the

misdeeds of the previous SAD-BJP government with such falsehoods”, he said he had repeatedly urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come out with a national drugs policy to tackle the menace and Harsimrat Kaur’s remarks had exposed her ignorance of the ground realities. Not only had his government broken the backbone of the drugs mafia in the state, it had also put majority of the

drug smugglers and dealers behind bars, while the remaining few had fled in panic, the Chief Minister said in a statement. “But obsessed as she is with her own personal interests, the Union Minister for Food Processing Industries had never bothered to find out how many drug peddlers have been arrested and how many youth are undergoing treatment in the clinics set up by his government,” he added.

Bachchan shared that he along with his friends, including Jaya, wanted to go on a vacation to London to celebrate the success of the film “Zanjeer”, but his father -- late Harivansh Rai Bachchan -told him he could go only after the two got married. “Then pandit and family informed. Next day all set. Flight at night, marriage to finish before the flight,” Bachchan recalled. Going back to his wedding day, Bachchan wrote that he dressed up in formal Indian wear, got into his car and wished to drive to Malabar Hill where her friends lived and where the ceremony was to be done. “My driver Nagesh pushes me out and insists he would drive me to the wedding... the substitute for the traditional horse.” While they were all set at Mangal, the name of the house on rent, it began to drizzle. “The rain is a good omen. Off I went, wedding over in a few hours. Done. Mr and Mrs proclaimed. Over,” the “Pink” actor wrote. From Zeenat Aman to Madhuri Dixit: The Buxom Heroine is gone!

(From L-R) Sonam K Ahuja, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Deepika Padukone Today’s actresses no longer need to worry about unsafe implants. They can seduce cinegoers with their eyes There was a time when the leading lady in Hindi cinema was often expected to flaunt a curvaceous figure with the vital stats – 36-24-36. South heroine Padmini, Raj Kapoor’s temporary muse who featured in his films like Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1961) and Mera Naam Joker (1970), was considered to have the perfect shape for a masala film actress. The nation obsessed over Zeenat Aman’s assets, prompting every contemporary of hers to pad up or rush in for breast

implants. A numero uno actress saw Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) and came back with low-esteem. She told her costume designer (sister of an Academy Award winner) to ensure her cholis were custommade to make her appear advantageous in the next film. FULL-FIGURED ACTRESSES WERE THE NORM In other words, a woman’s decolletage was an important feature. And, buxom women often stood a better chance with filmmakers than those with minimal assets. Remember importantly that these were before the ‘fat-shaming’ and

‘body-shaming’ movements existed. Back then, illiteracy or ignorance ruled when it came to these aspects. The Hindi film heroine was expected to be well-endowed. Period. Quite often, filmmakers made no bones about addressing this issue with the ladies whom they cast. Or sometimes with the costume designers who were asked to add adequate material to pad up the girls. THIN IS IN Today, however, a girl is no longer required to be busty. A leading man keeps repeating, “Girls with small breasts have large hearts.” And to this

another character actor often adds, “Nowadays, when girls say they want to make a clean breast of things, you know they have little to declare!” (Ha ha) Boorish, pig-headed, chauvinistic remarks have always been the order of the day. In the current scenario, no one wants to say anything openly for fear of being mercilessly trolled on social media. Anyway, the good thing is that today, pencil-thin heroines no longer need to worry about unsafe implants. They can seduce cinegoers with their eyes. Of course, girls wear deep necklines and have little to show.

But they’re not apologetic about it, which is such a welcome trend. Thin is in. And, the lack of adequate assets is no longer a deterrent. After all, acting is a neck-upward function. Madhuri Dixit’s breast-heaving movements in Dhak Dhak Karne Laga (Beta, 1991) is still considered the ultimate sensuous number. And, the nation confesses that they were seduced by this ditty. However, girls today are accepted even if they heave and sigh a lot less in their songs. Only occasionally you hear stories of makers complaining

about girls lacking curves. Rumour has it that a Student Of The Year 2 newbie lost out on a monsoon release because the director found her too flat. He wanted a combination of an innocent face with a slightly-buxom body. Just before the girl could pop champagne saying she had signed her next with a big hero, she had to step down. And, another cherubic heroine stepped in. However, big b**bs are no longer a prerequisite. Girls are happy flaunting deep necklines with “little or nothing”. And we say, hooray to that!

Salman’s ‘Inshallah’ locked for Eid 2020 Mumbai (IANS): Superstar Salman Khan and actress Alia Bhatt-starrer “Inshallah” will release on Eid next year. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, an epic romance drama, is a co-production between Salman Khan Films and Bhansali Productions Private Limited (BPPL).

Announcing the film’s release date, Prerna Singh, CEO of BPPL, said in a statement: “We at Bhansali Productions are happy to confirm that the film hits theatres on the Eid of 2020.” Salman and Bhansali have worked together in films like “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, “Khamoshi: The Musical” and

“Saawariya”. Meanwhile, Salman’s latest film “Bharat” minted over Rs 42 crore on the first day of its release on Eid on Wednesday. The actor on Thursday took to social media to thank his fans for giving “me my career’s biggest opening ever”.

cravings will be reduced. This will prevent weight gain caused by overeating. 4. Alleviates Heartburn and Indigestion Indigestion is caused by increased acidity in the stomach. You suffer from heartburn when the acid refluxes into your oesophagus. When you drink water on an empty stomach, these acid are pushed down and get diluted, solving the problem. Also, this provides a head start for your stomach for the upcoming breakfast. 5. Improves Complexion and Skin Radiance Dehydration causes premature

wrinkles and deep pores in the skin. It was found out in a study that drinking 500 ml of water on an empty stomach increases blood flow in the skin and makes skin glow. Also, drinking more water throughout the day means that your body is releasing toxins, which will make your skin more radiant. 6. Promotes Shiny, Smooth, and Healthy Hair Dehydration can have a serious impact on your hair growth. Drinking plenty of water nourishes your hair from the inside out. Water makes up almost ¼ of the weight of a hair strand. An insufficient intake of water can cause brittle hair and thin hair strands. You should drink more

7. Prevents Kidney Stones and Bladder Infections Drinking water immediately after waking up is important for preventing kidney stones and bladder infections. It is a fact that drinking water on an empty stomach dilutes the acids which lead to stones in the kidney. The more water you drink (to a healthy limit), the more you will be protected from various kinds of bladder infections caused by toxins. 8. Strengthens Immune System Drinking water on an empty stomach helps in flushing and balancing the lymphatic system, which leads to increased levels of immunity. A strong immune system will keep you safe from various diseases and prevent you from falling sick as often. As you can see, there are a whole host of benefits of drinking water immediately after waking up. It’s without a doubt the easiest way to make a positive change to your lifestyle without spending any money.

EASY FRIED RICE Prep 20 m • Cook 10 m • Ready In 35 mins Ingredients 3 cups cooked rice * 2 Tbs sesame oil 1 small white onion, chopped 1 cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed 2-3 Tablespoons soy sauce (more or less to taste) 2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 Tbsp chopped green onions (optional) Instructions Preheat a large skillet or wok to medium heat. Pour sesame oil in the bottom. Add white onion and peas and carrots and fry until tender. Slide the onion, peas and carrots to the side, and pour the beaten eggs onto the other side. Using a spatula, scramble the eggs. Once cooked, mix the eggs with the vegetable mix. Add the rice to the veggie and egg mixture. Pour the soy sauce on top. Stir and fry the rice and veggie mixture until heated through and combined. Add chopped green onions if desired.

Notes For the rice they suggest day old rice. I usually cook mine in the morning or night before and refrigerate. It will still taste great if you are not able to do this.

2019 Volkswagen Atlas SUV: All New Midsize Crossover where “size meets style.” By Autoreviewman The Volkswagen Atlas, is a rugged, yet refined looking sport utility. It features a smart, neat look to the exterior that common with all VW’S will not date terribly. The Atlas features three row seating as standard and is powered with a choice of two engine choices – VW’s excellent 3.6-litre VR6 unit that makes 276 hp and 266 lb/ft of torque and a 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine with 235 hp and 258 lb/ft of torque. Both engines are teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 4Motion

all-wheel drive system comes only with the V6 engine. Interior wise, the Atlas features a very roomy interior. For 2019, the Volkswagen Atlas gets automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring as standard across all trims. The Volkswagen Atlas we tested took the form of the top level Execline 4Motion model with the 3.6 FSI engine. Standard equipment include: LED headlights, full power features , digital cockpit, 20 inch wheels, Park Distance control, Area view 360, Apple CarPlay and

Android Auto, Bluetooth, a widescreen backup camera, and multi-collision auto braking. Our Execline model in a beautiful Fortana red metallic finish had the optional R Line cosmetic package ($760),

and the Captain’s chair package ($625). The interior cabin of the Atlas is very classy, with a typical, neat, efficient dash and the use of high quality materials. The roomy interior of-

fers generous second- and third-row seats that are very easy to access. Cargo room is good with — 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 55.5 cu.ft. with the back row down and a huge 96.8 cu.-ft. with the second and third rows folded. VW’s digital cockpit with a 12.3-inch display on the premium Execline mode is superb, and there is the availability of an audiophile quality Fender premium audio system, with 12 channels, a 400-watt amplifier and 12 speakers. The V6 is available with a towing package and factory tow

hitch capable of hauling 2,268 kilograms. Fuel economy rating is 13.7 L/100km city and 10.1 highway. When properly equipped, the 2019 Atlas can tow 2,000 pounds with the base four-cylinder and up to 5,000 pounds with the V-6. Not much too complain about. A very competent family SUV. Highly recommended if you are in the market for a mid-sized SUV that won’t let you down. 2019 Volkswagen Atlas Execline priced from $53,590 plus options, freight, PDI and AC tax. 2019 TOYOTA RAV4 Trail – New Addition offers unique thrills! By Autoreviewman The Toyota RAV4 is totally new for 2019, just a tad larger, with attractive new sheet metal and higher ground clearance. Well equipped, high quality and superbly built the RAV4 is one of the best CUVs in this sector. Engine power is via a 2.5 Litre, 4-cylin-

der unit, with more power up 27 hp to 203 hp in total there is also a hybrid RAV4 available. Transmission on the four cylinder model is via a new upgraded eight -speed, automatic, with all-wheel drive including the Dynamic Torque Vectoring system with disconnecting rear differential.

The new generation actually takes inspiration from Toyota’s 4 Runner, SUV with its aggressive front end and beefy exterior. The Trail Edition as tested has the white-painted roof and unique black plastic claddings. The interior also gets a makeover with a sleeker, more modern

look with a centrally top mounted screen. The 2019 RAV4 uses better-quality materials, including more soft-touch surfaces Our tester was a beautiful 2019 Blue flame painted model with white roof option ($540) and came with as standard amenities as: All Wheel Drive, (AWD), Trailer Sway Control, vehicle Stability, Control (VSC), Traction Control System (TRAC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Drive Mode Select, (Sport, Eco and Normal Modes). The Trail pack option adds better trailering capacity, and a higher ride height thanks to a lifted suspension. The exterior also adds: 19” alloy wheels, Trail black hood decal, front & rear Trail badged mud guards, Trail body mouldings, Trail badged door scuff plate, and Trail trim badged trunk. On the inside, there is: a leather-wrapped steer-

ing wheel and unique orange stitching, interior trim panels, a leather wrapped heated steering wheel, with tele - tilt and steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth controls, voice recognition controls, Trail Badged shift knob, and Trail badged all weather floor mats As usual, safety is very high on the RAV4, in fact with any Toyota. Standard on all new RAV4s is Toyota’s Safety Sense P package. On the road, the RAV4 has the smooth ride and inoffensive driving

manners that it is so loved for. There is not a whole lot to complain about the RAV4. The Trail edition offers some extra distinction in the lineup and the higher ride height means it can tackle those off road trails with more aplomb. Highly recommended as an excellent family CUV. 2019 Toyota RAV4 Trail Edition MSRP Price $39,230 as tested with options, Freight & PDI Total MSRP $41,176 More info at www.toyota. ca

Cadillac Introduces First-Ever 2020 CT5 The all-new 2020 compact Cadillac CT5 sedan advances the brand’s award-winning legacy with a distinctive fusion of design, performance and comfort, supported by Cadillac’s latest technologies — including Super Cruise1, the world’s first true handsfree driver assistance feature for limitedaccess freeways. “The first-ever Cadillac CT5 showcases Cadillac’s unique expertise in crafting American luxury sedans,” said Steve Carlisle, Cadillac president. “Its details elevate every drive and reward the senses.” An all-new fastback design inspired by the Escala concept, the look underscores the CT5’s refined ride, complemented with a driver-centric interior that blends high technology and high-touch elements. Luxury and Sport models allow customers to tailor the car to their style preferences with

unique design and trim. “From every angle, the CT5 exudes athleticism, sophistication and confidence,” said Andrew Smith, executive director of global Cadillac design. “Cadillac’s signature hardedge cues have evolved to a more sculptural and fluid expression of the brand’s design language.” Bright exterior accents and unique grilles and fascias distinguish the CT5 Luxury and Premium Luxury models, while the Sport model is differentiated by darker accents and performance-inspired details, including unique grilles, fascias, rocker extensions, spoiler and standard 19-inch wheels. Cadillac demonstrates its commitment to technology by bringing the Super Cruise driver assistance feature to the CT5. Cadillac’s Super Cruise driver assistance feature enables customers to drive hands-free on

more than 208,000 kms (130,000 miles) of limited-access freeways in the U.S. and Canada, using LiDAR map data, high-precision GPS, a state-of-the-art driver attention system and a network of camera and radar sensors. The driver attention system helps keep drivers engaged by detecting and signaling when drivers need to pay more attention to the road. CT5 is powered by a 2.0L Twin-Scroll Turbo engine and 10-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift. This standard propulsion combination offers responsive off-the-line performance with excellent low-end torque. The twin-scroll turbocharger and a unique three-step sliding camshaft help the engine optimize performance across the rpm band for a greater feeling of on-demand power at all speeds. Cadillac’s powerful 3.0L Twin Turbo V-6 is

available on Premium Luxury and Sport models, rated at an estimated 335 hp (250 kw) and 400 lb-ft of torque (542 Nm)5. Lowinertia turbochargers and a manifold-integrated liquid-to-air intercooling system help the engine produce exceptional power with virtually no lag and sustain it across most of the rpm band. Like the 2.0L Turbo, it is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift. The CT5 is expected in showrooms late fall 2019. More info at www.cadillac.ca

tube off-road shocks, 18-inch wheels and Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires. Also new for 2020, the 6.2L V-8 is available on Silverado RST models equipped with four-wheel drive. As a result, the maximum towing capacity of the Silverado is increased to a class-leading 6,078 kilograms (13,400 pounds) when properly equipped. For those wanting even more performance, the Silverado 6.2L is available with a Performance Upgrade Package that adds a performance air intake and cat-back performance exhaust system, raising output to 435 horsepower and 636 Nm (469 lb-ft) of torque. For 2020, Silverado will be available with an all-new 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engine dedicated to efficiency and refinement. Available on LT, RST, LTZ and High Country models, the 3.0L Duramax diesel is best in its diesel segment for horsepower and torque with an SAEcertified 277 horsepower and 624 Nm (460 lb-ft), with 95% torque arriving at just 1,250 rpm and peak torque arriving at only 1,500 rpm and sustained to 3,000 rpm. The 2020 Silverado Custom will now be available with Chevy’s advanced 2.7L

Turbo, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. New for 2020, the Silverado will be available with the expanded towing technologies previously introduced on all-new 2020 Silverado HD. Finally, the Silverado is available with Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera for 2020. The system features a single high-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror that scans the road

and uses proprietary software and algorithms to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle ahead. The system can bring the Silverado to a complete stop and is integrated with the stop/start capability of the engines to help optimize efficiency. Adaptive Cruise Control - Camera is available on Silverado LT, LTZ and High Country. More info at www, Chevrolet.ca
