Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh come into being

New Delhi (IANS): It was a historic Thursday as two new Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh came into being, putting into effect the reorganization of the erstwhile state. The implementation of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which got the President’s assent on August 9, means the special status enjoyed by Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 comes to an end after 72 years. The landmark bill to abolish special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the state into two Union Territories was moved in Parliament on August 5 and passed the next day by both Houses, amidst much uproar. According to the Act, the UT of J&K will have a legislature while the UT of Ladakh will have no legislature. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government on August 5 had announced the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and had also announced the bifurcation of the state, paving the way for two new Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Lauding Sardar Patel’s efforts to unify India, Modi dedicated the “big decision” to Sardar Patel, who he claimed would not have taken so long to resolve the Kashmir issue, if he was allowed to tackle it. “Sardar Patel had once said that if the issue of Kashmir had remained with him, it would not have taken so long to resolve it. On his birth anniversary today, I dedicate the decision to remove Article 370, to Sardar Saheb,” Modi said.

“For decades, this Article 370 had created a temporary wall among us Indians. Our brothers and sisters who were on the other side of this temporary wall also lived in confusion. The wall which was increasing separatism and terrorism in Kashmir, now it has fallen,” he added. The Congress on Thursday took a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government soon after Jammu and Kashmir ceased to be a state, saying that the “multicultural crown” of the country has been “dismembered” for ideological reasons. “Multicultural crown of India – J&K has been dismembered for ideological reasons. Radha Krishna Mathur, was on Thursday morning administered the oath as the first Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh.

ON Thursday, China protested India’s “unilateral move” to create the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, which it said challenges “China’s sovereignty”. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, in a statement, said that the matter of reorganization of the erstwhile State of Jammu & Kashmir into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh is entirely an internal affair of India. “We do not expect other countries, including China, to

comment on the matters which are internal to India, just as India refrains from commenting on internal issues of other countries,” he said. He said that the two UTs are an integral part of India. “We expect other countries to respect India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” He said that “China continues to be in occupation of a large tract of area in the two UTs. It has also illegally acquired Indian territories from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) under the so-called ChinaPakistan Boundary Agreement of 1963.” “India has consistently conveyed its concerns to both China and Pakistan on the projects in so-called China-Pakistan Economic Corridor which is in the territory that has been illegally occupied by Pakistan since 1947,” the spokesperson said. On the boundary question, he said that the two sides have agreed to seek a fair, reasonable and mutually accepted solution to the issue through peaceful consultations on the basis of the political parameters and guiding principles that were agreed in 2005. In Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told the media on Thursday: “China’s stance on the Kashmir issue is clear and consistent: The region is a dispute left over from colonial history and should be properly and peacefully resolved based on the UN Charter, relevant UN Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements.” China has sided with Pakistan in opposing India’s revocation of Article 370 that gave special status to Kashmir.

Pakistani generals dance with pop singer Rawalpindi / New Delhi (IANS): Top officers of the Pakistan Army danced along with Punjabi pop singer Humaira Arshad at their General Headquarters (GHQ) on Sunday evening to observe “Kashmir Black Day”. October 26 is the day the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India. The show was organised by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan armed forces, for the officers to show solidarity for Kashmiris. However, the event, which got leaked through Humaira’s tweets, drew sharp reactions from the Pakistani Twitterati. The initiative is part of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikh religion, who was born in Nankana Sahib, a small town in the Punjab province of Pakistan, where Sikhs from around the world go for pilgrimage, Pakistani media reported. Speaking at the ceremony, Khan said laying the foundation stone of the university was an apt tribute on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. “Kartarpur is the Madina of the Sikh community and the Nankana Sahib its Makkah,” said the Prime Minister. The gurdwara, located some 4 km from the border with India, is believed to have been built on the site where Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, died in the 16th Century. Sig Sauer rifles to add to army’s combat lethality New Delhi (IANS): The US-made, heavy-calibre Sig Sauer assault rifles are set to boost the combat lethality of Indian troops. The first batch of these rifles will be given to them this December. As per the deal signed in February by the Ministry of Defence with US arms major Sig Sauer, 72,400 rifles will be purchased at Rs 700 crore [Rs. 7,000 million]. These assault rifles will suit the army’s operational tactic of ‘shoot to kill’ instead of ‘incapacitation’, according to defence experts. These weapons may give an upper hand to

troops in insurgency-hit areas. Troops are at present dependent on the INSAS rifles and have to wait for indigenous mass production of AK203 rifles of Russian origin, the experts say. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said here last week that by the end of year the first batch of the Sig Sauer rifles would arrive in a dismantled state and would be provided to troops after being assembled in the country. Around 7.5 lakh AK-203 rifles will be produced under the contract. “Apart from INSAS rifles, the army also has AK47s at its disposal. The 7.62x39 mm AK-203 rifles produced in India will no doubt boost the ‘make in India’ initiative and give more teeth to troops. But as a matter of urgency, the Sig Sauer rifles will be a big boost for troops in frontline areas,” a senior army officer told IANS.

Modi to address public after Kartarpur corridor inauguration New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a public gathering at Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab’s Gurdaspur after inauguration of Kartarpur Corridor on November 9, say sources in the union home ministry. senger Terminal Building. However, whether the PM will flag off the first “jattha” (group of devotees) visiting Kartarpur Sahib in which former PM Manmohan will also participate, is yet to be confirmed. Government sources also say, the address will be held around three km

away from the Corridor. However, the event will be in Dera Baba Nanak itself. Earlier, India and Pakistan signed an agreement to operationalise the historic Kartarpur Corridor to allow Indian Sikh pilgrims a visa-free visit to the holy Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. However, the thorny is-

sue of a $20 service fee imposed by Islamabad remained unresolved.

India signed the deal in the interest of the pilgrims and timely operationalisa-

tion of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor before the 550th Parkash Purab.

Congress delegation to visit Kartarpur Sahib New Delhi (IANS): A Congress delegation led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be visiting Kartarpur Sahib on November 9, sources said here on Monday. The seven-member delegation has been constituted by party interim President Sonia Gandhi. Apart from Manmohan Singh, the delegation

will consist of Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, and senior leaders Jyotiraditya Scindia, R.P.N Singh, Randeep Surjewala, Deepender Hooda and Jitin Prasada. As per reports, the former Prime Minister has also been invited by the Pakistan government but Singh has declined

the invitation. Sources also said that the first ‘jatha’ is likely to go on November 9, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Kartarpur Corridor. The Kartarpur Corridor is 4.7 kilometres from the India-Pakistan border. The foundation stone was laid in November 2018.

The Shriomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), considered a mini parliament of Sikh religious affairs, has control over Sikh religious affairs and manages gurdwaras in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, including the holiest of Sikh shrines Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as Golden Temple, in Amritsar. Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district, where the Sikhism founder is believed to have attained enlightenment, is at the centre stage of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of the founder of the Sikh religion. The entire town is currently being painted white by the SGPC. In a latest move to break the impasse on joint celebrations, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh proposed that the SGPC should join the state government’s November 12 event, to be attended by the President. ter is expected, could be held under the purview of the religious body. The suggestion was made by the Chief Minister at his meeting with SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal. An official spokesperson told IANS that the Chief Minister expressed his concern, during the meeting, about the lack of unity on this historic occasion, especially in view of the participation of high-ranking dignitaries such as the President and the Prime Minister in various events. Underlining the embarrassment that this would cause to all concerned, Amarinder Singh noted the Sikh community has always remained united in such celebrations in the past. He warned that any deviation from the past practice would cause irreparable damage to the community. Longowal apprised the Chief Minister about the decision of the Union Home Minister and the President to visit Sultanpur Lodhi on November 11 and 12, respectively. In response, the Chief Minister suggested that the SGPC stage inside the gurdwara precincts at Sultanpur Lodhi may be used as the common stage on November 11, with the state government also participating in the celebration there. However, since November 12 would have the President participating in the programme, it was apt for the state government to host the head of the state, in keeping with his status, Amarinder Singh proposed. This, said the Chief Minister, would help clear the confusion prevailing among the people about the main events, and would also send a positive message of unity among the Sikh community. Longowal assured the Chief Minister that the SGPC would consider the proposal and revert, said the spokesperson. As a special gesture, a meeting of the Punjab Cabinet was held at Sultanpur Lodhi where the ongoing work relating to the celebrations were also reviewed. Last week, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the 109-km-long circular ‘Prakash Purb Marg’ from Sultanpur Lodhi to Dera Baba Nanak, close to the Kartarpur Corridor, to be constructed by the state at a cost of Rs 103 crore [Rs 1,030 million] besides announcing a new Rs 13 crore state-of-the-art bus stand for Batala, another historic city. Amarinder Singh on many occasions hit out at Akali leaders Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Sukhbir Badal for “deliberately putting obstacles” in the way of coordination between the state government and the SGPC for the joint celebrations. “What kind of Akalis are they? Definitely not the Taksali Akalis of the founding party,” he has said. The Chief Minister rejected the Akalis’ claim that it was the SGPC job to conduct the Prakash Purb celebrations, pointing out that their jurisdiction lay only within the holy sanctorum sanctum. Outside the precincts, it was the government’s prerogative, he has said. At his media interactions, Amarinder Singh is clear in saying that his government is working closely with the Centre to ensure that all infrastructure and other works for the historic event are completed well in time. On the contrary, Union minister Harsimrat Kaur is saying the state has “gone blind in arrogance” to the extent that it considers itself above the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs. Just ahead of the celebrations at Sultanpur Lodhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Kartarpur Corridor on November 9 and dispatch the first lot of pilgrims to visit Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Pakistan’s Punjab province on the occasion of the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev. The Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara, originally known as Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, is a highly revered Sikh shrine where Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life and is his final resting place. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be a part of the Sikh delegation led by Amarinder Singh to pay obeisance at the shrine and return the same day. The Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province is located 4.5 km from the border near Dera Baba Nanak. The shrine will be accessible to Indian pilgrims throughout the year via the Kartarpur Corridor. Everyday 5,000 pilgrims will be allowed to visit the holy shrine. India will share the list of pilgrims 10 days before their visit. Pakistan will verify the list and finalise it four days before their visit. The 4.2 km-long corridor from the Indian side was scheduled to be completed by October 31, a week before the celebrations begin.

The Congress said that it is a “diplomatic blunder” facilitated by an “international business broker”. They’re found on both sides of the spinal cord and each one is about the size of a thumbnail. If they’re injured, or become inflamed due to wear and tear, they can cause muscle pain or severe neck pain that can be difficult to diagnose. Through spine manipulation, and without the use of X-rays and MRIs,

IT’S been aptly said, “They preach patience who never felt pain.” Chronic severe pain can be soul destroying, particularly when the diagnosis is not known. One of the most troublesome categories is back and neck pain. It can render people immobile, making even the simplest activity a challenge. Because it involves the spine, and therefore a wide range of muscles as well as the delicate and complex central nervous system, back and neck pain is also a worry due to the risks of treatments that go wrong. Unfortunately, all too often, the diagnosis and treatment of spinal problems involves expensive tests, risky surgical procedures, and powerful drugs. But as regular readers will know, I have always been loath to

Treatment involves injection of an anesthetic, along with a steroid, into the facet joint. This is not an easy task. It takes a combination of sensitive fingers, practice and skill. Patients can expect a series of visits to the doctor’s office for several injections of the steroid medication over the course of days or weeks. One objective is to provide enough pain relief to enable physiotherapy to proceed. Another objective is to determine if the injection alone resolves the pain, or if additional treatments are required. Results depend on the degree of injury, the severity of inflammation, and the effectiveness of physiotherapy. If the pain cannot be eradicated for longer periods by repeated injections, the next step could be a treatment called cervical radiofrequency ablation (RFA). This procedure uses heat generated from radiofrequency energy to destroy nerve function, stopping the nerve from transmitting pain signals to the brain. RFA uses fluoroscopy to ensure safe and proper position of the needle. Following RFA treatment, cervical neck pain may not return. But there is always the possibility that the nerve will regenerate and require further RFA. As I have often advised, when agreeing to a surgical procedure, nothing can be guaranteed. Doctors trained in conventional medicine may not direct patients to explore facet joint injection as a potential treatment for back and neck pain. The common approach is to order x-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. But all patients should be informed by their doctors that they have choices. Expensive tests have a role, but they are not always the right answer. And po-

tent painkillers by prescription should be the last resort, not the first, as they can have many negative effects. Many people suffer through back and neck pain without resolution. But if this is the first time you have heard about facet joint treatment, you may wish to ask your doctor for more information. Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor: A Timeline of the Couple’s Romance Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are two of the most talked about celebrities in Bollywood right now. Belonging to star families, Ranbir and Alia are both very much aware of the public attention that celebrities receive. Ranbir started his career in 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, whereas Alia made her debut with Karan Johar’s Student of the Year in 2012. 2019 Toyota C-HR: “Compact High Rider offers Style, Safety and Fun!” By Autoreviewman Toyota’s swoopy C-HR Stands for “Compact – High Rider.” Toyota describes the C-HR as having “kickass styling.” The C-HR has a bold, dramatic, edgy look to it, with its daring fascias, rear-sloping roofline, bulging fenders and complex curves and creases. The rear doors almost melds into the body and features high mounted hidden door handles. The cars swoopy silhouette actually looks better in the two –tone model we tested. The complex curves, edges and sharp

creases somehow looking interesting and daring. If Toyota is looking for attracting styling kudos, it certainly has it with the C-HR. I liked the chrome strip around the windows that really looked nice on our dark red tester. There is only one power plant available in the

CH-R; namely a 2.0-litre, 144-horsepower four-cylinder producing 139 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite its vaguely off-road looks, the CH-R is only available in front wheel drive operated via a seven-step ratio CVT. (Continuously Variable Transmission.) The 2019 Toyota

C-HR is available from $23,675, arriving as standard, very well-equipped vehicle, with: Toyota Safety SenseTM P, Backup Camera, Apple CarPlay, Entune 3.0 Audio with App Suite Connect, Bluetooth Capabilities, dual-zone heated seats and safety technology that includes pre-collision braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. The interior design is edgy and well executed with soft-touch surfaces, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, heated seats, dual-zone climate

control, and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The cockpit is neatly laid out, with large analogue gauges for the speedometer and tachometer, and a central 4.2-inch configurable colour screen in mounted high up that operate the climate control system and entertainment functions. I would say it more of a comfortable two seater in the back than a tight three seater. There is 538 litres of cargo room behind the rear seats. The seats fold flat in a 60/40 split, and the rear hatch-like door opens nice and wide (As

the dentist say!). Fuel economy is good, with official totals of 8.7L/100 km and 7.5L/100 km in city and highway. The CH-R is well built and has the typical durability and solidness once expects from Toyota. The handsome looking new Sierra comes with a restyle, comprising of: a larger new grille, more chrome trim, defined muscular styling, integrated exhausts, MultiPro tailgate, carbon fibre pickup bed, and a beefier, more substantial look than before. The truck arrives in regular, double, and crew cab body styles, with optional 4WD throughout. There’s an eight-foot box available on regular cabs, and double cabs. The crew cabs comes with a standard 6’6” pickup box, or a 5’8” box.
