New Delhi: One of the BJP’s slogans in the run-up to the 2014 general election was making India “Congress-mukt” (Free of Congress). Riding high on the volley of corruption angle against then UPA-2 and its top ministers, the BJP made “Congress mukt Bharat” a household slogan. Five years down the lane, it is far away from reality. Even in states like Haryana where the ‘Lotus’ has come back to power, it is by taking support of JJP and independents. In Bihar, Nitish Kumar’s JD-U is calling the shots and has dared the BJP to go solo in neighbouring Jharkhand. Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP, an NDA ally at the Centre, has decided to go it alone in Jharkhand where polls are due to begin from November 30. In most of the north-eastern states, its the North Eastern Democratic Alliance (NEDA), an umbrella alliance that is running the show, not the BJP. May 24 this year was a day of jubilation at the BJP headquarters here with flowers being sprinkled, red carpet being rolled out and with ‘dhols’ at full blast. After all, the Modi 2.0 was back with a bang with an unprecedented mandate of 303 seats in the Lok Sabha. But if one looks state-wise, the once blooming ‘Lotus’ is shrinking with a steady pace across India. It all started last December when the BJP was wiped out in 3 states at one go — Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Is the “Congressmukt Bharat” an idea whose time never came? Here’s looking at 11 states where the question hangs heavy: 1. Chhattisgarh: Last December,
the BJP’s 15-year-rule came to a sudden end when the Congress dethroned the ‘Lotus’ from the naxal-affected state. The Congress swept to power with a three-fourth majority of 68 seats in the 90-member Assembly. The BJP was reduced to just 15 in the state. In spite of a triangular fight with Congress, Ajit Jogi-led Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (JCC) and Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) combine in the fray, the BJP failed to get any benefit. In the 2013 assembly elections, the BJP had won 49 assembly seats. In 2018, BJP’s Raman Singh era came to an abrupt end as Congress’s Bhupesh Baghel rose to power. 2. Rajasthan: This has been an interesting state for the BJP. In 2014 general election, it won all of 25 seats. In 2019, general election, it had the 58.47% vote share in the state. But during the assembly elections,
the electorate decided for change. With 107 MLAs in the 200-member Assembly, the Congress bounced back to power. Soon after, in a press conference a confident Rahul Gandhi had said, “It’s the time of change. A resurgent Congress and strongly united Opposition will make it very difficult for Modi and the BJP to win 2019 elections (to Lok Sabha).” Though that dream of Gandhi wasn’t realized, Vasundhara Raje Scindia was replaced by Congress’s Ashok Gehlot. 3. Madhya Pradesh: The state took one of the longest times to count the final vote in the era of EVMs. The result left Shivraj Singh Chouhan disappointed. Unlike Raje, Chouhan was avery popular CM. But that wasn’t enough: Congress’ Kamal Nath swept to power last December in spite of the intra-party contradictions. Like in Chhattisgarh, the Congress
managed to form a government in the state after a long spell of 15 years, though with a waferthin majority. Interestingly, again in 2019 general election, which took place just a few months after the Assembly results, the BJP won 28 seats, including Guna, where senior Congressman Jyotiraditya Scindia lost by a big margin. BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, who hails from the state, credits Prime Minister Modi’s image for the comeback in the state in the general election. But that does not take away the fact that BJP lost one of its key states. 4. Punjab: It was a state that the Akali-BJP combine lost after ruling two consecutive terms. After Captain Amarinder Singh, the giant killer as he is often referred to within the Punjab Congress, was allowed to take charge replacing Rahul Gandhi’s protege Partap Singh Bajwa, the BJP’s rout was imminent. After exit polls showed new entrant Aam Aadmi Party doing well, the BJP trained its guns on AAP more than the Congress, in spite of knowing their primary contender was Congress. Many in hushed tones, during the assembly polls said that the state BJP IT Cell worked unilaterally against the AAP. The BJP was cut down to a single digit – two in the 117-member Assembly, which is worse than in Delhi.

Shiv Sena’s Udddhav Thackeray takes oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister Mumbai (IANS): Shiv Sena President Uddhav B. Thackeray was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra at a colourful function held in Shivaji Park here on Thursday evening. Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office and secrecy at 6:40 p.m. to Thackeray - who sported a striking saffron coloured kurta-pyjama, the Sena’s colour. In an unusual gesture of humility, soon after completing the formalities, Thackeray, the first from the politically prominent Thackeray clan to hold the post, stepped to the front of the stage and knelt down, touching his hands and head on the floor to express his gratitude to the people of Maharashtra for the honour bestowed on him.
Thackeray is the third from the Sena to be Chief Minister after Manohar Joshi and Narayan Rane in the late 1990s. Besides, two legislators from each of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)’s constituents
- the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party, and the Congress, also took oath as ministers. They are: Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde and Subhash Desai, NCP’s Jayant Patil and Chha-
gan Bhujbal, and Congress’ Balasaheb Thorat and Nitin Raut. Among the prominent dignitaries present on the occasion were more than 500 farmers and farm widows
from all over Maharashtra, Thackeray’s cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray, Reliance Group industrialist Mukesh Ambani, his wife Nita Ambani and their family. At least three Chief Ministers from other states, six former Maharashtra CM like Sharad Pawar, Sushilkumar Shinde, Manohar Joshi, Prithviraj Chavan, Ashok Chavan and Devendra Fadnavis were present. Other prominent personalities from all the three parties included Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Kapil Sibal, Rajiv Shukla, Praful Patel, Kishore Tiwari, Supriya Sule-Pawar, Sanjay Raut, Arvind Sawant, Rohit Pawar, and Ajit Pawar and his son Parth Pawar. Thackeray’s son Aditya
Thackeray and wife Rashmi Thackeray, besides aunt Kundatai (mother of Raj Thackeray) who was seen shedding tears of joy at her nephew’s ascent as CM, were also present. Scores of leaders, legislators, MPs and well-wishers touched Thackeray’s feet as he gracefully accepted their wishes and felicitations. A group of Jain monks and sanyasins also turned up impromptu to pray for, wish and bless Thackeray and son Aaditya, on the stage after the oath ceremony. Shivaji Park was transformed into a colourful sea of humanity with an estimated over 100,000 people including activists of the three MVA parties and others coming from all over Maharashtra to witness the historical event.
‘Congress-mukt Bharat’ or ‘BJP-mukt Bharat’? CONTINUED FROM 1 5. Delhi: The party is not better placed in the national capital than in Punjab. The BJP has just one more MLA than it has in Punjab. In the 70-member House, the party has just 3 MLAs. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party had boasted that it had “allowed” BJP’s Vijender Gupta to be the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). The state unit is faction-ridden. 6. Maharashtra: The NCPCongress-Shiv Sena formed the government this week in spite of desperate manipulations by the BJP. The
NEW
BJP-Sena alliance fell apart, and the Sena walked out of the nearly three-decadeold alliance with the ‘Lotus’ early this month. The apparent discord was over the 50:50 power-sharing formula as insisted upon by the Sena. 7. West Bengal: If one state the BJP is desperate to get in and the ruling TMC is not letting an inch to cede is West Bengal. The ‘Lotus’ has made successful inroads into the state since the violent panchayat elections when it swept Purulia district and consecutively in 2019 general election,
ate into the CPI-M votes. But there is still some time before the BJP can think of dislodging the TMC as the next Assembly elections are due in 2021. Owing to increasing saffronisation, the BJP has found growing acceptance in Bengal, where it has only 7 MLAs in the House. 8. Odisha: The BJP had tasted power in Odisha along with the BJD in 2009. Ever since their divorce, the party has been unsuccessful to dislodge the BJD in spite of propping up various faces from the states. The state Assembly elections

which were held almost simultaneously with the 2019 general election, the BJP managed a tally of 23 seats while the BJD won 113 in the 146-member House. 9. The South: Apart from Karnataka, where the BJP came to power after certain MLAs of Congress and JD-S rebelled, there is not a single state where the BJP is in power. The party’s consolation in Tamil Nadu is the ruling AIADMK, which is a part of the NDA. But there is not a single BJP MLA in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. 10. Puducherry: In the Union Territory, the only
talking point is the frequent showdowns between Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi– a Central appointee — and Chief Minister Narayanasamy. As recent as the beginning of this month, a spat between the two came out in the open. Narayanasamy had used the term “demon” for Bedi, with whom he has been at loggerheads over governance for long. In a tweet, Bedi hit back saying: “The expression is unparliamentary, uncalled for, uncivilised, uncouth and unacceptable.” 11. Sikkim: Even in Sikkim,
where the BJP’s North-East man Himanta Biswa Sarma has been very successful in saffronising the area, Sikkim has been the odd one out. In fact, when Sonam Tsering Venchungpa won the Martam-Rumtek seat by defeating the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) candidate Nuk Tsering Bhutia by 600 votes, it was BJP’s first ever MLA in the Himalayan state. However, recently 10 SDF MLAs joined the BJP rank, making it the main opposition. Shiv Sena’s Udddhav Thackeray takes oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister

Never heard of such stealthy government With Sena by its side, Congress faces formation: Mamata on Maharashtra fiasco first test in Jharkhand Kolkata (IANS): Criticising the BJP, the Centre and the Governor for the Maharashtra fiasco, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday expressed her disdain over the way the exercise for forming the Devendra Fadnavis government was undertaken “stealthily” in the midnight hours. “Across the country, there is only one question in the hearts of common people what was the need to carry out the exercise at midnight? I had heard about freedom at midnight. But I had never heard about formation of a government stealthily at midnight,” Banerjee told media persons here. “Things happened at 2 a.m., 3 a.m., 4 a.m., 5.45 a.m. In the morning a government
was formed when formation of another government having majority (Shiv SenaNationalist Congress PartyCongress) had been finalised. “No party, journalist or media was aware about the developments. Even the administration had no information. That’s the reason the perception (about the Fadnavis government) was bad,” the Trinamool Congress supremo said, hours after Fadnavis and his deputy Ajit Pawar put in their papers. Referring to the Shiv SenaNCP-Congress parading 162 MLAs on Monday evening, she said Fadnavis has done the right thing by resigning as he didn’t have a majority. However, she also opined that Fadnavis shouldn’t have taken up the post “till
he was sure of a majority”. Pulling up Maharastra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, she said before swearing in Fadnavis and Pawar, he should have asked the NCP whether the party would support the BJP in forming the government. “Whether I support somebody or not, the letter has to come from the mother party. The mother party conveys that such and such is the legislature party leader, and under his leadership the party will support this and this. “It does not happen that somebody comes forward and says about himself that he is the legislature party leader. Governor should have asked the mother party whether it has given the letter. Party is supreme,” she said.
Finance Minister’s reply in Rajya Sabha makes BJP MPs doze off New Delhi (IANS): While Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was denying that there is a slowdown in the economy in Parliament, her BJP colleagues sitting behind slowly started going to sleep. Reporters in Parliament observed that Members of Parliament and Ministers were found sleeping during the debate on the economic slowdown in the Rajya Sabha. There was a sequence to the events, as one MP started dozing while the Finance
Minister was speaking. A little bit more into the reply and a second MP was also spotted dozing. Thereafter, Minister of State for Finance
Anurag Thakur was spotted trying to wake up the MPs from their slumber.
New Delhi (IANS): The Congress party’s strategy to go with ideologically opposite Shiv Sena in Maharashtra will be put to test in Jharkhand which goes to the polls on November 30 as to what extent its move to counter BJP’s Hindutva has got acceptance among voters. The Congress this time will have Shiv Sena by its side and can raise its pitch to counter the BJP as Sena chief Uddhav Thackarey has lambasted the saffron party for not following “true Hindutva”. The grand old party has been guarded in its response to the Ayodhya verdict, though it has welcomed the Supreme Court judgement paving the way for the construction of Ram temple. The
voices within the Congress welcoming the verdict have been feeble with only young leaders such as Sachin Pilot, Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister, being vocal about the construction of the temple. Jharkhand goes to the polls at a time when the three-party government of Congress, Shiv Sena and NCP will be in place in Maharashtra. “The alliance wants to galvanize its workers in Jharkhand and keep the morale of alliance partners high to get the required electoral benefit,” said NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik. The ruling BJP in Jharkhand, where five-phase polls kick off from November 30, has failed to find alliance partners. Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP, an ally
of the ruling NDA, has let it be known that it would go it alone in Jharkhand and so has JD-U, the BJP’s ruling ally in neighbouring Bihar. The Congress in Jharkhand is in alliance with Jhakhand Mukti Morcha and Lalu Prasad’s RJD. A Congress leader exuded confidence that Maharashtra would have positive impact on Jharkhand outcome. “The political atmosphere in Jharkhand will change soon as perception would gain ground that the BJP is losing everywhere. It is not known if Uddhav Thackarey will campaign for the opposition in Jharkhand. The party thinks it will get dividends from the new alliance experiment as Maharashtra has a large number of migrants from that state.
Delhi-Mumbai high-speed road corridor in fast lane: Gadkari Gurugram (IANS): The NDA government’s ambitious project to connect Delhi with Mumbai through a signal-free expressway is on fast track. This was stated by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari, here on Wednesday. The land acquisition of the project was almost complete and road construction would begin soon, said Gadkari at the inauguration of the three-day International Centre for Automotive Technology summit. “We have allocated Rs 1 lakh crore [Rs 1,000,000 million] for construction of the DelhiMumbai high-speed road corridor, which will connect Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat
and Maharashtra. It will be the longest axis control expressway and will help agricultural and industrial growth of these states,” Gadkari said. “We have been constructing 30 km roads every day. We have completed KMP, KGP and other national highway projects, like Dwarka expressway, ring road in Delhi and the southern peripheral road (SPR) are under development,” Gadkari said. “The idea is to make high quality roads where vehicles will consume less fuel,” he said. The Minister said, the central government was working on alternatives/substitutes of crude oil to fulfil futuristic
needs. Compressed natural Gas (CNG) and hydrogen could be the alternatives, he added. Irrespective of the recent slowdown in the automobile sector, which shuttered around 50 per cent auto component companies in the last four months, and some big players, like Honda motors facing labour unrest and Maruti Suzuki India sending a large number of contraction employees on leave, the Minister said India was performing well. “The country’s economy is growing and India will become the third global economic power by 2030,” Gadkari said.

Fadnavis quits after setting a few records, some dubious Mumbai (IANS): Though he came stealthily on a dark Saturday morning as the new Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday quit in full media blaze on a clear bright afternoon from his post - which he enjoyed along with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar - for barely 80 hours. As he drove down to Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation to Governor B.S. Koshyari, it would have dawned on him that he became the first in the state’s history to “resign” twice within less than a month. Fadnavis had quit as Chief Minister hours before the tenure of the outgoing 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly expired on November 9, after becoming the first-ever non-Congress CM to complete a full fiveyear term - a fact that was duly acknowledged loudly
The Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress combine on Monday organised a public parade of their 162 supporting MLAs in a bid to disprove the claims of 170 legislators made by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally Ajit Pawar. in public by himself, Prime “Mee punha yaeen, Mee Minister Narendra Modi, BJP punha yaeen, Mee punha President and Union Home yaeen” (I will return), and reMinister Amit Shah and oth- peated it often till it became ers. a subject matter of puns, Apparently emboldened by jokes, memes and fun-mesthe glowing accolades, Fad- sages in the past weeks. navis went a step further and Undeterred, he kept his proclaimed even louder: promise and did return - but
how! And finally, had to go less than triumphantly as the bemused 12 crore people of the state watched silently both at his quiet entry and his grand exit, after less than four days in power. In fact, this is considered the first time ever in the country’s political history, or at least in Maharashtra, when a new government was duly sworn-in in a pre-dawn operation, without the usual presence of luminaries like the Chief Justice and judges of the Bombay High Court, top police and civil officials, armed force officers, the diplomatic corps stationed in the country’s financial capital and celebrities from different walks of life. Even the media - which had an army-like presence at his resignation announcement - was conspicuous by its sheer absence, including the official television and radio
and Central or state government media departments, or the foreign media, as the two-man government was sworn-in in the brightly-lit Raj Bhavan hall with all curtain drawn that morning. For the first time, an elected government in Maharashtra faced a legal curve ball in the Supreme Court, with the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress challenging his appointment in the apex court on a Sunday - a weekly holiday for the courts - and the final orders came out within 48 hours on Tuesday (November 26) morning. It was also the first time when the Chief Minister took his new charge on Monday but his Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar did not, and after having some meetings in Mantralaya, went away quietly. Again, for the first time, the
three parties Sena-NCP-Congress held an unprecedented ‘public parade’ of all their supporting MLAs that evoked a huge response among the masses, especially since the BJP-Ajit Pawar never formally disclosed their claimed 170 MLAs support till now. Even after the SC order on Tuesday, most BJP leaders remained confident that the party would be able to prove its majority on the floor of the assembly on Wednesday evening, but the two-man show itself collapsed unceremoniously on Tuesday afternoon. Ironically, the crestfallen Fadnavis’ downfall came when the country was celebrating the “Constitution Day,” and Maharashtra was observing the 11th anniversary of the dastardly 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes, which were billed as “a war against the country”.
Assam bans gutkha, pan masala with nicotine for 1 year Guwahati (IANS): The Assam government on Wednesday banned the sale and mancufacturing of pan masala and gutkha in the state for one year. A notification issued by the Food and Drugs Administration of the state government banned manufacturing, storage, sale, transportation, display and distribution of food articles in which tobacco or nicotine are used as ingredients. Several organisations and NGOs have been demanding that the BJP-led government in Assam should strictly enforce the central
anti-tobacco act in Assam and, thereby, impose complete ban on smoking in public places, sale of tobacco products to minors and within the 100-yard radius of any educational institutions which has been mandated by Sections 4 and 6 of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act (COTPA), 2003. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cardiovascular diseases (CVD) kill more people than any other cause of death worldwide, and tobacco use and second-hand (passive) smoke exposure contribute to ap-
proximately 12 per cent of all heart disease deaths. According to a recent survey, almost half of the adult population in Assam use tobacco in some form or the other. The study also pointed out that more than 30 per cent of non-smokers are exposed to passive smoking in work and public places in Assam. The government of Assam has imposed the ban in pursuance of Regulation 2,3,4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulation, 2011, officials said, adding that the manufacturing, stor-
age, transportation, display, distribution or sale of gutka, pan masala or any chewing material containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients are henceforth prohibited in the state of Assam for a period of one year. The Consumers’ Legal Protection Forum (CLPF), Assam, and Consumer VOICE, New Delhi, reacted positively to the government’s notification for supporting the initiative of banning chewing tobacco, gutkha and pan masala. In their statements, they thanked the Assam government for its efforts.
Terming this as long overdue, they stated that this curb will help citizens to overcome cancer and other dreaded diseases. Amal Chandra Kataki, Director of Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute, said, “This initiative of Assam government to ban gutkha, pan Masala etc. in Assam is a significant one in view of the high prevalence of tobacco consumption (48.2 per cent) in the state. It is the single major important risk factor for cancer. It is also responsible for cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease etc.”
“The rise in number of tobacco users, especially smokeless, is a cause of worry because it is easily accessible to children and youth. We are working in the state through our programmes to protect the public, especially youth and children, from exposure to tobacco use,” said advocate Ajoy Hazarika, Secretary, CLPF. It may be mentioned here that the Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2 (GATS 2) released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) shows 48.2 per cent percent of adults in Assam consume tobacco.

Amarinder bats for peace, talks tough on terror Birmingham (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh advocated for peace and friendship with Pakistan to enable both countries to move forward towards development and progress, but made it clear that India would not allow ISI-backed forces such as the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) to disturb its harmony and stability. The Chief Minister was here to address the Indian diaspora on the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. In an informal chat with the media on Sunday, Amarinder Singh said the SFJ was a hardcore terrorist group, with no ideological basis for its campaign, and had to be treated as such. He alleged the SFJ’s so-called legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannu was operating under the directions of Pakistan’s ISI, and added thatPannu’s sole motive was to divide the Sikhs, and India, to promote the ISI agenda. Referring to the terror modules busted in Punjab in the past couple of years, along
with large-scale arrests and seizure of weapons, he said these had exposed the SFJ’s intentions, but both the state government and the Centre were dealing with it with an iron hand. Earlier, addressing the diaspora, the Chief Minister called for cordial and friendly relations with neighbours to promote peace, in line with Sri Guru Nanak Dev’s philosophy, for the collective resolution of global problems. Both India and Pakistan had been through a lot, and it was time now for them to let go of the past and move forward in a spirit of friendship to ensure their progress, he stressed. Pointing to Guru Nanak’s philosophy of the oneness of God, the Chief Minister underlined the need to rise above religion and caste to protect the future and facilitate the development of Punjab and its people. What the founder Guru of Sikhism had indicated 550 years ago was happening now, he said, pointing to global problems like

togetherness to tackle these problems and look ahead, towards the creation of a better future for the next generation. His government, said Amarinder Singh, would continue with the 550th Prakash Purb celebrations for another year to disseminate the message of the Great Guru, who had taught the importance of protecting nature through his ideology of ‘Pawan Guru, Paani Pita, Maata Dharat’. The decision to set up the Guru Nanak chair in 11 universities, including one in Iran, was aimed at researching the Guru’s travels and philosophy so that the same could be disseminated effectively for the good of humanity, he added. The Chief Minister sought the Indian diaspora’s help and support in enabling the industrial growth of Punjab, which he stressed needed to be weaned away from the water-guzzling paddy crop. Indians, especially the Sikh community, had worked hard to contribute to society of whichever country they had chosen to settle in, and it was time now for them to look back at their roots, said Amarinder Singh, urging them to invest in Punjab’s economic growth. “You must remember where you originated, and must contribute in any way you can for the progress of Punjab,” he appealed to the diaspora. The Chief Minister invited Indians in Britain to the Progressive Punjab Investors’ Summit, being held on December 5-6, to help the state make its much-needed shift from agriculture to industry for its economic progress and for the generation of employment for the youth. Pointing out that Punjab was suffering a problem of plenty, with surplus paddy and wheat crop with insufficient storage, he said the state needed investment to break away from its agricultural cycle to become an industrial state. Citing the Kartarpur Corridor as a beginning towards better relations between India and Pakistan, Amarinder Singh hoped it would set the stage for opening of other important religious shrines in Pakistan to Indians seeking ‘khulle darshan deedar’. Thanking both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan’s Premier Imran Khan for this historic initiative, he shared with the audience that he had an interesting chat on cricket with Imran on their bus journey from Zero Point to Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara, in the context of the fact that the latter’s uncle had played for Patiala in the pre-independence era. In his informal chat with mediapersons later, the Chief Minister reiterated his demand for waiver of the passport condition and the $20 fee for travel through the Kartarpur Corridor, pointing out that India had never imposed any such tax on those visiting Ajmer Sharif and Nizamuddin Dargah from across the border.

Protest outside Punjab Chief Minister’s event in Britain damp squib
Chandigarh (IANS): The socalled protest by the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) outside the venue of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s event in Birmingham in Britain was a damp squib, the state government said on Monday. A handful of protesters gathered there not only had no popular or genuine support
but they also did not succeed in disrupting the Chief Minister’s program in any way, a spokesperson for the government said. Amarinder Singh on Sunday attended the entire event and was there for almost three hours, said the spokesperson, adding that it was so-called protesters
who were, in fact, forced to beat a hasty retreat. The Chief Minister had, in his address to the Indian diaspora at the event, dismissed the SFJ as an ISIbacked hardcore terrorist outfit with no ideological base. The organisation had no agenda but to divide Pun-
Amarinder discharged in 13-year-old Ludhiana City Centre scam Ludhiana (IANS): A local trial court on Wednesday discharged Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, his son Raninder Singh, son-in-law Raminder Singh and all other accused in the 13-year-old Rs 1,144-crore Ludhiana City Centre scam. This was the only corruption case pending against the Chief Minister. Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh, while accepting the closure report moved by the Vigilance Bureau giving a clean chit to Amarinder Singh and all other accused, said no case of corruption had been made out against any of the accused. There was no evidence against any accused, the judge observed, adding ex-chairman of the Improvement Trust Paramjit Singh also did not indulge in corruption though he may be accused of disobeying the orders of his senior. “There isn’t an iota of evidence against any accused. No evidence of bribe or forgery. So, the closure report is accepted and all discharged,” said the judge. The case pertains to an infrastructure project conceived during Amarinder Singh’s previous stint as the Chief Minister in 20052006. The Ludhiana City Centre project was to be executed by the Improvement Trust (LIT), a body under the state Local Bodies Department. Amarinder Singh, who was present in the court, welcomed the verdict, saying it was a victory for them in their fight against what was brazenly an act of political victimisation. Talking informally to the media outside the court, the Chief Minister said the truth had prevailed and their stand against the politically motivated charges had been fully vindicated. Asserting that he and his family members accused in the case had always had full confidence in the law and unwavering faith in the judiciary, the Chief Minister said it had taken 13 years for the victory to come, but the court verdict had shown that truth always wins in the end. The manufactured lies presented as evidence before the court by the petitioners had no leg to stand on, and had been totally exposed as nothing but shameless falsehoods, he added. Amarinder Singh, however, lamented the cost the victims had to pay in the process while they waited for their names to be cleared and their reputations to be restored. Five of the 36 accused in the case had, in this period, gone to their graves with the stigma of being involved in the scam, he pointed out, adding that with their names getting cleared, their families could now finally live in peace. Earlier, a trial court in Mohali had acquitted Amarinder Singh and 17 others in a 10-year-

would not succeed in the face of India’s unity and strength. Punjab as well as India has
been well equipped to tackle any threat against their peace and harmony, the Chief Minister said.

Stomach Cancer - The Orphan Malignancy
NAPOLEON Bonaparte, John Wayne, and Peter O’Toole all succumbed to stomach cancer. Yet, when we talk about cancer, all the attention usually goes to lung, breast, prostate or colon cancer. This is why stomach cancer is often called the “Orphan Malignancy”. But stomach cancer strikes over 32,000 North Americans every year. It also demands a dramatic change in lifestyle when this vital organ is lost. So it’s well worth the effort to decrease the risk. Early stomach cancer usually has no symptoms. In fact, when indigestion, bloating, and weight loss occur, it can be due to several benign reasons. So it’s often only when fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain begin that patients realize there’s a problem and seek medical advice. The diagnosis is made by endoscopy. A lighted instrument is passed down the esophagus (food tube) to explore the inside of the stomach. The doctor may find a definite malignancy, or suspect one, and then take a biopsy. The usual treatment is surgical removal of part or all of the stomach. This may be followed by either radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of both. One survivor explained that, when diagnosed with stomach cancer, she did not realize anyone could live without a stomach. A surgical removal of the entire stomach is made possible when doctors connect the esophagus directly to the small bowel in a way that allows the essential functions of the digestive
system to continue. But it does require a major change of lifestyle. Following stomach removal, patients have to learn to eat all over again. So, one of the biggest challenges is getting enough food and good nutrition. As this survivor remarked, “Imagine what it’s like going from eating full meals, to barely being able to finish two ounces of chicken and one-half a cup of mashed potatoes. I lost 95 pounds and only gained back 12 pounds in eight years.” Following stomach removal, many patients also suffer from anemia and vitamin B12 insufficiency. It’s because the stomach’s acidity is required for the absorption of B12, essential for the normal functioning of the brain. Since early diagnosis is often elusive the best protection is prevention. And three lifestyle factors can make a difference. Alcohol consumption increases the risk of several malignancies, particularly when you have more than three drinks a day. Alcohol breaks down into acetaldehyde, which is carcinogenic, comprising substances capable of causing cancer to penetrate cells and damage DNA. Carcinogens also interfere with nutrients that protect the body from cancer. For years, strong evidence has shown that eating salt-preserved foods is a probable cause of stomach cancer. These include meat that has been prepared by salting, fermentation, smoking, or the addition of preservatives to enhance colour, flavour or shelf-life. Also included are foods such as bacon, ham, cold cuts and deli meats such as salami, bologna, turkey, and frozen meat products. It’s believed that nitrites in these products form compounds that are carcinogenic. Nietzsche, the German philosopher, wrote, “The belly is the main reason man does not mistake himself for a God.” Today, we abuse the stomach with too much food causing obesity, another risk factor for stomach cancer. Obesity triggers inflammation linked to cancer in several organs. Pogo, the cartoon character, was right when he said, “We have met the enemy and the enemy is us.” If we all consumed more fruits, vegetables, and fish, and less meat, fewer packaged foods, exercised more, used alcohol in moderation and stepped on a scale daily to monitor weight, there would be less

Win $5000 cash prize on Lohri while saving for your child’s education BY SANDEEP AHUJA YOUR child has started going to school. Have you started the RESP? In September, school-aged children start their school year and grown up students join post-secondary education. Since the cost of education in Canada is quite high, in order to ease the financial burden of parents, the government has designed a unique educational savings program namely RESP. Parents who intend to save for the post-secondary education of their children can take advantage of this wonderful savings initiative of the government. Who is RESP meant for? RESP is an immensely beneficial/wonderful way to help you save for the postsecondary education of your
children. The funds invested/ accumulated through RESP can be used to pay tuition fee and other financial barriers of post-secondary education including residence, school supplies, food, and travel. Like RRSP, the funds invested in RESP grow in a tax-sheltered manner until the time you withdraw the money to cover educational expenses. Who can open RESP? Parents, grandparents, maternal uncle, paternal uncle, maternal aunt and friends........ anybody can open RESP account for a child, and the same child can be the beneficiary of multiple RESPs. Who can be the named Beneficiary? You can name any child as your beneficiary and you
don’t need to be related to the child. After the plan comes into force, you still have the option to change the beneficiary. As per the age of the new beneficiary, you can continue contribution within the duration of the policy. How much money can you save? The maximum lifetime contribution limit per child is $50,000 while there isn’t any annual contribution limit. This implies that as per your budget, you can invest up to $50,000 in the plan. To encourage parents to invest funds in post-secondary education of their children as early as possible, the government of Canada has devised CESG plan. CESG at a glimpse:
Annual Grant: 20% of your annual contribution Contribution Limit of Annual Grant: $500 Total Lifetime Limit per Saving (per Beneficiary): $7,200 Some provinces offer their own Grant programs in addition to CESG. The federal and provincial governments contribute the grants directly into the RESP, and these additions within your contribution can significantly increase your savings. If your child doesn’t want to study further, how can you utilize the funds? If your child doesn’t wish to continue his post-secondary education, then you can: 1. Nominate a new beneficiary 2. Take back/withdraw the
money 3. Transfer the funds into your RRSP account 4. Donate the funds to an educational institution We are happy to announce that we are celebrating 13 successful years of Punjab Insurance. To commemorate this occasion, we have organized a free contest on Lohri Festival in which you can win a total cash prize of $5,000. On January 13, 2020, there will be 5 draws with $1000 cash prize for each of the draws. To participate, you don’t need to purchase a plan. PUNJAB SAD seeks probe into minister-gangster nexus in Punjab Chandigarh (IANS): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Sunday demanded an inquiry by a central agency or a sitting judge of the high court into the Rs 1,000 crore [Rs. 10,000 million] extortion racket being run by gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpur and his associates allegedly under the pa-
tronage of Punjab Jails Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa. SAD leaders Bikram Singh Majithia and Daljit Singh Cheema demanded that Randhawa should be charged and arrested for extending patronage to Congressmen who brutally murdered former Akali sarpanch Dalbir Dhilwan,
besides investigating the role of Bhagwanpur in the murder and the extortion racket being run by him from the jail. The SAD leaders said a central inquiry by the CBI or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or even by a sitting judge of the high court could alone expose the minister-
gangster-police nexus in the murder of Dhilwan and the extortion racket. Majithia said it had been seven days since Dhilwan was murdered but his killers were still at large. “This is all because of the influence of Sukhjinder Randhawa who is giving shelter to
the killers. If the police is serious about arresting the assailants, it should search the residence of the minister as well as his close associates,” Majithia alleged. He also provided ‘documentary evidence’ to link Bhagwanpur with the minister, showing how Bhagwanpur
and his brother Manu were close associates of Randhawa’s close aide Babbu Sukharaju. He alleged that Sukharaju’s nephews, Kawal and Manjot, were running a kabaddi club in New Zealand which managed players as well as tournaments abroad.
Longowal re-appointed SGPC chief third time Amritsar (IANS): Gobind Singh Longowal was on Wednesday re-appointed President for the third time in a row of the cashrich Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The decision was taken at the

Why do I have to sue my spouse in my ICBC claim? BY CATERINA (CATHY) RIZZO Associate Lawyer
action is the plaintiff. The owner and driver of the negligently operated vehicle are named as defendants. The owner of the vehicle is vicariously responsible for the negligent conduct of the driver (unless the vehicle was stolen or driven without consent – this can raise some complex insurance coverage issues, so if that situation applies to your personal injury claim, contact one of our ICBC car accident lawyers for more information).
may be brought against them. The policy requires that the insurance company take financial responsibility for claims against the named insured, and so it is ICBC that pays compensation for loss or damage caused by the negligence or careless driving of the named insured. As a result, assuming that there are no insurance coverage issues, the spouse, friend or relative who is personally named in the lawsuit is not personally at risk.
Have questions? Contact an experienced ICBC car accident lawyer If you have been injured in a car accident caused by your spouse, relative or friend, do not shy away from claiming compensation due to the formalities of automobile insurance in BC. Contact Simpson Thomas & Associates on 604-689-8888 to book a free initial consultation with one of our team of ICBC car accident lawyers.
Bringing a lawsuit against a spouse, family member or friend
IMAGINE that you have been injured in a car accident, and after consulting with an ICBC car accident lawyer you learn that you will need to sue your spouse, family member or friend to get compensation for your personal injuries. That scenario does not sit well with many people, but it is the way that the ICBC claims process works. ICBC personal injury claims and lawsuits must be brought under the insurance policy of the at-fault driver, regardless of whether the driver who cause the accident is a relative of the injured person. ICBC car accident lawyers on the basics of personal injury claims If you have been injured in a car accident that was not your fault, the general rule is that you must start a court action within two years of the date of the accident in order to preserve your rights to bring a claim with regards to your injuries. The injured party who commences the court
So, as a result of the way that automobile insurance coverage is structured in BC, you must pursue your claim for compensation under the insurance policy of the owner and driver of the at-fault vehicle. Because of this, it is very common for personal injury car accident claims to be brought against the injury victim’s relative or friend. For example, if you were a passenger in a vehicle driven by your spouse or child, and that person is responsible for the accident that caused your injuries (for example, because he or she was following too closely and rear-ended another vehicle, or because he or she was driving too fast for the weather conditions), then your claim must be brought against the ICBC insurance policy of your spouse or child.

As experienced ICBC car accident lawyers, we know that accident victims are often highly uncomfortable with the notion of having to sue their loved ones to get compensation for their personal injuries. However, it is important to understand that such lawsuits, while brought against the relative by name, are in reality claims under the applicable ICBC insurance policy. The relative is the “named insured” in the ICBC policy, which the relative bought and paid premiums for to cover claims for loss or damage that

Marriage Story (PG) **** Divide and Conquer!
Work at your marriage. Truer words were never spoken. Or face the consequences of a relationship gone bad. Whether you are in love or not see what may result when things go astray in affairs of the heart in Marriage Story. Said to be the best break-up movie since the classic Kramer versus Kramer this Netflix release gets the full screen treatment at the Vancouver VanCity Theatre before coming to the small screen. Spot on writing from director Norma Ephron immerses audiences in the plight of a young upstart couple. Both Scarlett Johansson
and Adam Driver are sensational as a married couple from New York who toil away in The theatre. After 10 years of marriage and young son Henry the pair decide to go their own ways. Sort of. Big time reluctancy sets in along with a huge amount of pentup emotion and rage. Send In the clowns. Or in this case the lawyers. When the wife high tails it to L.A. to pursue an acting career and get a fresh start it’s time for both parties to lawyer up. Legal beagles come
out fast and furious as Laura Dern, Alan Alda and Ray Liotta suit up. A word of advice - don’t get caught in their crossfire - or crosshairs. Soul searching abounds in Marriage Story. A well defined script delivered to perfection by Driver and Johansson who are at the top of their game make Marriage Story as real as it gets. Take the best advice possible and try to work things out before things get out of control with those lawyers reaping those not so just rewards.

2020 Mazda3 Sport GT: Gets better all the time! By Auto reviewman For 2020, the Mazda3 is revamped. Much loved for its sporty looks, and sprightly performance, the new 3 arrives as either a hatchback or a sedan with even sleeker sheet metal and a host of improvements. The new platform is both stiffer and lighter than before for better handling, and there is a new interior with improved technology. Powertrains offering include the latest version of Mazda’s Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter I-4 with cylinder deactivation making 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, or the 2.0 liter four cylinder Skyactiv offering 155hp and 150lb-ft torque. There is the option of either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Also of note is the availability of the Mazda3 Sport with the option of All Wheel Drive via an i-Activ AWD system for the first time. This is a significant development. Previously there has been little choice in this sector of sedans. Now you can order the All-Wheel Drive option on Sport GS and GT grades on both the sedan and the hatch, We tested a 2020 Mazda3 Sport GT in Mazda’s wonderful Soul Red crystal metallic that came with such standard features as: SKYACTIV-G 2.5 engine with Cylinder Deactivation; offering 186 horsepower with the Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed manual transmission, G-Vectoring Control Plus, LED headlights and daytime running lights 7” LCD display, advanced keyless entry (proximity and ignition), and navigation system. Also
system – which uses an imperceptibly light drag on the outside front brake to aid in cornering –. On the engineering front Mazda3’s move from a multilink to a torsion beam rear suspension – which Mazda says it has engineered 78 percent stiffer rigidity aids in the ride? Despite the softer ride, the Mazda3 still remains fun, sporty and engaging to drive. The 2.5-liter L4 Engine never runs out of steam and is a lively willing performer—the six speed manual featured was power-operated glass moonroof with interior sunshade, tilt-up ventilation feature, 18” alloy wheels power adjustable driver’s seat, heated seats and steering wheel, 8.8 inch color display for Mazda Connect, HMI Commander, Apple Carplay and Android, plus a rear view camera with 7” LCD display. Options included the Premium Package ($2,500) that includes: Leather trimmed upholstery, power adjustable driver’s seat (10-way, includes lumbar support), driver’s seat memory function, Smart Brake Support Rear, Smart Brake Support, Rear Crossing , rear parking sensors, SiriusXM® Satellite Radio advanced keyless entry (proximity and ignition), navigation system, Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR), front wiper de-icer, HomeLink® wireless control system, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with memory seat link. The sublime signature Soul Red Crystal Metallic paint was a $450 extra. Also on the safety front there was also Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, and Mazda
Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, windshield-projected colour Active Driving Display, and host of other equipment. The cabin’s new design is a step up from the previous model. Fit and finish is extraordinary with premium materials and thoughtful design throughout. The Premium package option model delivers outstanding leather seating and trim that would not be amiss in an Audi! The dash features an 8.8-inch infotainment display situated higher up and set angled towards the driver. The new “Commander” control knob on the center console, for the infotainment system is now simpler to use and quicker in reaction. The new design is much appreciated for less eye distraction. In front of the driver is a configurable screen showing a speedometer, fuel economy information, or active safety info. Premium models get a proper head-up display with featured speed and navigation data. The cabin also features specially designed seats and ergonomics that make the driver feel as if they

transmission is a delight with smooth transitions and a light clutch. Not a lot to complain about, fuel economy is rated at 9.2 city and 6.6 L/100km. FCA Marks 15 Millionth Dodge and Chrysler Minivan Sold!
Windsor, Ontario: FCA is celebrating 15 million minivans sold and counting since the very first minivan — a Plymouth Voyager — rolled off the line at Windsor Assembly on Nov. 2, 1983. Today, FCA continues to lead with more than half of the minivan segment in Canada, with a 52 percent share, selling twice as many minivans as any other manufacturer over more than 35 years. “Reaching 15 million minivans sold isn’t just about hitting a number, it’s about the memories families have made and the children who
have grown up driven to school or practice or on a family road trip in a Chrysler Pacifica or Pacifica Hybrid, Dodge Caravan or Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country or Voyager over the past three and a half decades,” said Tim Kuniskis, Global Head of Alfa Romeo and Head of Passenger Cars – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “We continue to lead and innovate to keep our current minivan lineup the absolute best at hauling people and things and help this generation of owners make memo-
ries that will last a lifetime.” As the first company to introduce the minivan and through six generations of the vehicle, FCA has innovated 115 minivan firsts — features that continue to make life easier for owners and their entire families and push the segment into the future. FCA firsts include the class-exclusive Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system, Uconnect Theatre, hands-free sliding doors and the only hybrid electric powertrain in the segment. Today’s FCA minivan lineup includes the Chrysler Pacifica, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Dodge Grand Caravan and the U.S market Chrysler Voyager. The Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid continue to revolutionize and reinvent the minivan segment. The Pacifica Hybrid is North America’s first and only hybrid minivan and is among the top 10 best-selling plug-
in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the industry in Canada. Pacifica Hybrid achieves 2.7 Le/100 km in electric-only mode in city driving, has an all-electric range of more than 50 kilometres (31 miles) and a total range of more than 800 kilometres (497 miles). As North America’s bestselling minivan ever, the
Dodge Grand Caravan continues its decades-long history of offering families style, versatility and useful features at a tremendous value. The Grand Caravan has introduced nearly 80 segment firsts, including the industry-exclusive Super Stow ‘n go seating, which can be easily operated with one hand, allowing users to
convert seating for seven to a spacious cargo bed in seconds. FCA’s current lineup continues to dominate and innovate in the minivan segment with vehicles such as the new Chrysler Pacifica Red S Edition. The Chrysler Pacifica Red S Edition
