India’s Home Ministry tells Border Security Force to adopt anti-drone technology
New Delhi (IANS): In the wake of weapons drop by drones in Punjab last month, the Union Home Ministry has asked the Border Security Force (BSF) to adopt anti-drone mechanism aimed at preventing such activities on western border which is guarded by the paramilitary force. The BSF, which is termed the first line of defence of India, has been asked to launch necessary counter-measures against drones which were used to drop a large number of AK-47 assault rifles and grenades from Pakistan in Punjab’s Amritsar district in the last week of September, Home Ministry sources said. The direction came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah on October 4 chaired a high-level meeting with the directorsgeneral of all paramilitary forces to review the current status of border security and measures to be taken to strengthen it further.
Informed sources told IANS that the matter was raised in the meeting in which questions were raised why the Indian Air Force and the BSF were unable to detect these drones. The BSF is considering the matter and specifically working on “detection, identification and interdiction” of the drones which were used from across the border to drop weapons reportedly meant for terrorist activities in Punjab and also in Jammu and Kashmir, said another official. The official, who is privy to the development, said: “The BSF, in its initial move, first of all trying to figure out the real threat from drones.” In the lack of an “anti-drone technology”, the official said that the issue has been a challenging task for the newly-appointed BSF Director General V.K. Johri, who has been instrumental in many covert operations during his stint
in Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) - the country’s foreign intelligence agency. The BSF has deputed a team to get information about a drone which has been found by Punjab Police, said the source, adding what we could knew about the drone was that it is a madein-China “hexacopter”. In its explanation, the BSF had informed the Home Ministry that neither it has the capacity to monitor any kind of aerial movement nor any such infrastructure. “As most of such acts are done during night hours, it is difficult to observe drones through naked eyes. Even radars cannot detect these drones. With the current information, it is learnt that these drones are GPS-enabled and move through RF (radio frequency) signals,” said an official. Intelligence agencies recently informed the Home Ministry that “state actors” of Pakistan were
behind the drone weapons drop incidents in Punjab and the one recovered drone was made in China. As per intelligence report, officials have been able to detect as many as eight sorties made by the drones to drop weapons in September. The possibility of undetected sorties has also not been ruled out. On each sortie, the drones have dropped packages weighing up to 10 kg, which could have been arms, explosives, or means of communication, like cell phones or satellite phones, the report said. As per Punjab Police sources, a large number of AK-47 assault rifles and grenades were dropped in Amritsar by drones in September that came from Pakistan. It is reported that some drones were seen by villagers in Hazarasingh Wala and Tendiwala villages in Ferozpur district.

Government explanation: ‘Kashmiri Muslim, Sikh IAF officers helped Rajnath in Shastra Puja’
New Delhi (IANS): A Kashmiri Muslim and a Sikh, both IAF officers attached to the Indian Embassy in Paris, helped Defence Minister Rajnath Singh perform the traditional Hindu ‘Shastra Puja’ (weapon worship ceremony) on the newly handed-over Rafale jet in France’s Merignac on October 8, sources said here on Thursday. The revelation comes amidst flak faced by Rajnath Singh over the past two days on social media for performing a traditional Hindu ceremony on the 4.5 generation multi-role combat aircraft. Over social media, the Defence Minister was accused of leveraging Hindutva by performing the ceremony whereas the fighter jet was purchased with taxpayers’ money belonging to all religions. On Thursday, pictures of Rajnath Singh being helped during the Shastra Puja by Air Commodore Hilal Ahmed, Air Attache in the Indian Embassy in France, who belongs to Kashmir, were widely shared over Twitter. Also shared were pictures of Deputy Air Attache B.B.S. Anand, a Sikh, helping the Minister as he inscribed the ‘Om’ symbol with vermilion on the front fuselage of the fighter jet. “That’s the spirit of #IndianArmedForces,” posted a Twitter user along with the photographs. The ED has started the probe after taking cognizance of the FIR filed into the matter by Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW). It is alleged that HDIL, which is facing bankruptcy proceedings, and its group companies had taken huge loans from the PMC Bank. As many as 21,049 fictitious bank accounts were allegedly created to hide the loans, which were disbursed in violation of RBI norms. It has also been alleged that HDIL accounted for nearly 73 per cent of the bank’s total loans. Out of the Rs 4,355 crore loans under the scanner, around Rs 2,146 crore were transferred to accounts held by the Wadhawans. An account belonging to the Wadhawans had a balance of Rs 2,009 crore on August 31, 2019, according to the FIR. During probe by the Reserve Bank of India, it has been found that directors of PMC Bank had replaced 44 suspicious loan accounts with 20,149 fictitious bank accounts whose individual balances were low. The 44 borrower accounts allegedly linked to HDIL were masked by tampering with bank software. The PMC Bank’s former Managing Director Joy Thomas was behind the masking of the borrowers’ accounts.

THE DOCTOR GAME – W. GIFFORD-JONES M.D
5
Is your baby isolated in a “Lysol Prison”?
MAHATMA Gandhi, the leader of India’s independence movement, popularized the expression, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Any doctor would agree that cleanliness is on the pathway to health nirvana. But are we going too far in keeping young children isolated from common germs? Are some parents doing a disservice to their youngsters by keeping them too clean? For decades, immunologist have been studying whether exposing young children to a little dirt might strengthen the ability of their immune systems to fight infection later in life. Research by Sir Mel Greaves, Professor of Cell Biology at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, England, shows that children raised in cleaner environments are more likely to have weakened immune systems. But experts are concerned an absence of exposure to common infections early in life may even be responsible for some children developing Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). ALL is the most common cancer in children 4 years and under and its global rates are increasing. This malignancy affects white blood cells in the blood stream and bone marrow and can quickly spread to other organs. The treatment is chemotherapy, radiation or the use of stem cells. But Greaves, who was knighted for his research, says some cases may be preventable. Greaves says some children may be genetically predisposed to ALL. But he adds, only
one percent of these children develop this disease and that the disease is more prominent in affluent societies. So Greaves suggests an environmental reason may be the cause. Greaves believes acute lymphoblastic leukemia is linked to childhood infection. He says that, for most children, their immune systems are able to handle infectious attacks. But for those children with a weakened immune system these infections can trigger leukemia. This suggests that it is important in the first years of life for the immune system to be primed for infections it can handle. Children need to build their defense system while they are young against common germs that won’t harm them. If they don’t, their immune systems may be overwhelmed later on by attacks that cause more severe consequences. Many readers may share my skepticism that dirt can be good for us. After all, I have Gandhi and godliness on my side. But perhaps we should think of childhood as the proving grounds to prepare for battles to come later in life. It’s logical that our immune system requires time to develop an effective defense. Modern medicine seems to have forgotten the power of natural immunity. And we now know that nearly 80 percent of the immune system is in our gut and we require healthy bacteria to support immunity. Greaves says that there are many causes for a weakened immune system. Today, we receive heavy toxic loads from agriculture, chemicals, radiation, and pollution, which can all create inflammation. We also know some parents are excessively protective, safeguarding their children from every source of germs. Their children are in what Greaves calls a “Lysol Prison”. Greaves believes that chronic inflammation is the root cause of many diseases. It’s not a new idea, as researchers have linked heart attack to underlying inflammation. His research is now exploring ways to prevent childhood cancer. He is analyzing bacteria, viruses and other organisms in the gut to help prime the immune system. The hope is to produce a cocktail of microbes that can be given to children as a yogurt-like drink. I hope it’s successful. One of the most depressing sights I’ve ever witnessed occurred at the Great Ormond Street Hospital, in Lon-
don, England, where I saw young children dying of cancer. Greaves also attributes his decision to study leukemia to his own visit there. So keep children clean, but don’t be obsessive. The best defense against infection is a strong immune system. Online: docgiff.com Comments: info@docgiff.com Dr. Ken Walker (Gifford-Jones) is a gradu-
ate of the University of Toronto and The Harvard Medical School. He trained in general surgery at the Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, Montreal General Hospital, McGill University and in Gynecology at Harvard. He has also been a general practitioner, ship’s surgeon and hotel doctor. His weekly medical column is published by 70 Canadian newspapers and 12 in the U.S. The readership is six million. Lift cap on number of Lok Sabha seats: Prasada New Delhi (IANS): In what could turn out to be another North vs South issue after the recent row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark on Hindi being made the national language, Congress Working Committee Member Jitin Prasada has demanded lifting of freeze on the number of seats in the Lok Sabha. Talking to IANS, Prasada said
he had written a letter in this regard to the government. Pointing to disparity, he said a member of Lok Sabha from the North often represented more than 25 lakh [2.5 million] people, whereas it could be only 10 lakh [1 million] in many other cases. Also, the amount for the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS)
was the same Rs 5 crore despite difference in the size of population they represented, he added. In the present 545-member Lok Sabha (with two nominated members of the AngloIndian community), UP and Bihar together account for 120 seats, which is more than 20 per cent. By the 84th amendment to
Uttaranchal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Delhi, would have gone up to 270 from 239 by 2016, Prasada said quoting a study. At the same time, the total number of seats for the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh would have
Constitution in 2002, the number of Lok Sabha seats was frozen at 545 till 2026. Earlier in 1951, 1961 and 1971, the number of seats was changed on the basis of census. Had the number of Lok Sabha seats been revised as per the 2001 census, the total number of seats in the Hindi belt, which includes Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, UP,
come down from 129 to 108. Stating that the next census was due in 2021 and the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the Congress leader said, it was the time to consider the issue. However, any change may create a regional imbalance in terms of representation in the Lower House of Parliament.

New Delhi (IANS): Chinese telecom equipment firm Huawei Technologies, which has got approval to take part in the demonstration of 5G during the three-day India Mobile Congress this week, said it is hopeful that the Indian government will make independent and fair decision on 5G for the country’s long-term benefit, based on verifiable facts and technical data rather than ideology or the vendor’s country. “We are thankful to the Indian government for its continued trust and support towards Huawei. We believe it is the expectation of the industry that all vendors and participants should come to this premier show with their latest solutions showcase. This is also the format on which IMC has been designed. We will continue to collectively showcase our leading solutions along with all other participants to make IMC a success, Huawei India CEO Jay Chen told IANS. The government’s nod for Huawei to participate in demo with the operators like Airtel and VodafoneIdea ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting at Chennai on October 11. Asked if Huawei is looking forward to Xi taking up the Huawei approval issue for the 5G trials with the Indian government, Chen said: “Huawei is not privy to any government-to-government level talks, so we cannot really comment on the upcoming visit. Huawei believes that the Indian government will make independent and fair decision on 5G for the long-term benefit of India, based on verifiable facts and technical data rather than ideology or a vendor’s country of origin. The nod for IMC showcase participation came
even as the government is yet to take a decision on allowing the firm to participate in the upcoming 5G field trials. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has assigned telecom service providers with spectrum in the 3400-3600 Mhz band range to demonstrate India-specific 5G technology-use cases along with their vendor partners, which include Huawei as well. It is understood that Huawei will be partnering with VodafoneIdea and Airtel at the event. Recently Huawei got big support from the country’s top operator Airtel, when Bharti Group Chairman Sunil Mittal, at the global forum of World Economic Forum’s India summit, said: “My view is they should be in play, Huawei over the last 10 or 12 years has become extremely good with their product, to a point where I can safely say today their product ... is significantly superior to Ericsson and Nokia. He added that Airtel has been using equipment from all three companies in its 3G and 4G networks. Mittal’s endorsement came right after US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross stressed the US administration’s view that Huawei poses a security risk - claims the company has repeatedly denied - and urged India to take the threat seriously. India is still planning its 5G networks, which it aims to roll out by next year, and has not yet ruled out Huawei’s involvement. Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told lawmakers in June that Huawei was among six companies that had submitted proposals to participate in the 5G trials, and a special committee has been appointed to examine potential security concerns.

Move to issue licence for selling tobacco items opposed
Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab chapter of the Federation of Retailers Association of India (FRAI), a body of over 4 crore [40 million] micro, small and medium retailers, here on Thursday raised concerns over the
proposal of licence for selling tobacco products. In a related development, the government has extended the gutkha and pan masala ban for a year in Punjab. The FRAI said it would lead to harassment of retailers.
No other state in India had such punitive laws, it added. The FRAI appealed to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to protect the interests of over 1.5 lakh micro retailers and their family members and save them from the poten-
Ex-serviceman Punjab CM salutes India Post Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh here on Thursday got nostalgic about his initial years of life in the army and receiving a letter while on duty that brought both tears and smile. The Chief Minister thanked India Post Office for its services. Wednesday was the National Post Day. “Nothing can beat the feeling of receiving a letter from home while in the army! It used to be driving force during my army days & these letters brought both tear & smile,” Singh, 77, tweeted. Posting a black and white picture of his days in the army, he said: “I salute @IndiaPostOffice for their services to the nation & thank them for the memories.” The two-time Chief Minister, a scion of the erstwhile Patiala royal family, is also a military historian. Singh had served in the second battalion of the Sikh Regiment between 1963 and 1969. Though he left army for a short period in between, to look after the family responsibilities, his love for the army brought him back when the India-Pakistan war broke out in 1965, an army officer close to him told IANS.
His father Lt. General Maharaja Yadavinder Singh served the regiment in 1935 and was Colonel of the 2/11 Royal Sikhs from 1938 to 1950, and of the 2 Sikhs between 1950 and 1971. Singh’s grandfather Major General Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was Colonel of the 15th Ludhiana Sikhs during 1918-1922 and then of the 2/11 Royal Sikhs in 1922-1938. His book, ‘Honour and Fidelity: India’s Military Contribution to the Great War 1914-1918’, talks about the contribution of Indian soldiers, presented a silver memento -- a replica of a Sikh regiment soldier in full battle attire -- to the battalion, which will be displayed at the Officers Mess.
tial harassment. Upinder Chaurasia, a FRAI member, said retailers who also sold tobacco were facing immense financial pres-
sure because of extreme regulation of the tobacco industry. “These measures will increase the cost of doing
business for these poor retailers and cut their earnings by 60-70 per cent, which will be a big blow to them,” he said.

Decide to link Aadhar card with property transactions: Punjab & Haryana High Court Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Union Government and the two state governments to take a decision on linking the Aadhar card with all property transactions by October 31. The order by a division bench led by Justice Rajiv Sharma and Harinder Singh Sidhu came on a public interest litigation (PIL) that demands identification of properties made in another person’s name. While disposing off the petition, the bench said that the petitioner has already made four representations in this regard to the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana as well as the Administrator of Chandigarh and the Union of India on July 22. “Consequently, the Chief Secretary of Punjab and Haryana and the Advisor to the Chandigarh Administration as well as Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs are directed to decide the representations by passing a speaking or detailed order within one month,” said the judges on October 1.

Provide Punjab government sacrilege case closure report: Court Mohali (IANS): A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here on Saturday upheld Punjab’s right to access the Bargari sacrilege cases closure report and asked that a certified copy of the report, along with attached documents, be given to the state. CBI Special Judge Nirbhow Singh allowed the revision petition filed by the state government against the July 23 order
passed by a Special Judicial Magistrate, who had dismissed state’s application for supply of closure report. The judge asked the Special Magistrate to provide the documents to the state, according to Advocate General Atul Nanda. The Advocate General had set up a team of two special public prosecutors, Rajesh Salwan and Sanjeev Batra, (both district attorneys) to argue the re-
vision petition in the court. Along with the special public prosecutors, Assiatant Inspector General (Crime) Sarabjeet Singh was also present on behalf of the state. Accepting the state’s contention that it was entitled to copies of the closure report and attached documents, the said as per the relevant sections of the Punjab Civil and Criminal Courts Preparation and Sup-

ply of Copies of Record Rules, 1965, “the party to a criminal case is entitled to copy of challan and similarly even a stranger to a criminal case is entitled for the same in case sufficient reason is shown to the satisfaction of the court.” Allowing the revision petition, the court observed as per Rule 4(4) copies required for official purpose by public officers of the central government or any state government shall be supplied free of cost, if the application for the supply of copy is endorsed by the head of the department. “It’s not the case of CBI that the closure report or documents attached thereto are confidential or classified documents and neither any application
was filed before the trial court under Section 173(6) Cr.PC [Criminal Penal Code] for not giving any part of documents to the complainant or the accused of the case being against the public interest,” the judge noted. “As per Rule 3(2), even a stranger is entitled for copy of the challan in case sufficient reason is shown to the satisfaction of the court. The word ‘stranger’ is not defined in the rules and the dictionary meaning of a word ‘stranger’ is a person whom one doesn’t know or with whom one is not familiar. In view of the facts stated above the status of state of Punjab in any case is better than that of a stranger,” the judge ruled.
The prosecution’s stand was the three FIRs in the sacrilege cases were initially registered by the Punjab Police, but the investigation was later handed over by the state to the CBI, which re-registered the cases. The prosecution also submitted only the investigation was transferred and the CBI had been informing the stage of investigation to the state from time to time. Further, the prosecution argued later on, a resolution was passed by the Assembly vide which the investigation was taken back from the CBI and accordingly, on September 6, 2018, a notification was issued by the state, withdrawing the consent to the CBI to investigate the case.
Identify poorest of poor jobless in villages: Punjab Chief Minister Chandigarh (IANS): Giving an impetus to the government’s flagship ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar and Karobar Mission’ scheme, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday declared all-out efforts to identify the poorest of the poor jobless in villages for employment. He announced a free coaching scheme for candidates to prepare for Group C exams for public sector and government jobs. Under the unique ‘10 unemployed per village’ initiative, 10 of the poorest of the poor jobless are being identified in every village, he said, adding so far 134,104 such jobless youth had been identified, with 32,420 placed in private employment and 12,114 successfully skill-trained. The Chief Minister was speaking at Chamkaur Sahib town while handing over appointment letters to some of the 116,556 youths selected for jobs and identified for self-employment or skill training. He also interacted with successful students, most of whom have received salary packages of up to Rs 20,000 at job fairs. Describing these jobs as stepping stones for the future success of the youth, the Chief Minister
said the bulk of the jobs less than Rs 10,000 had gone to school drop-outs, thus helping to bring them out of the unemployment cycle in which they were caught as a result of their failure to complete their education. He recalled that he himself had started his career in the Indian Army with a meagre salary of Rs 325, with just Rs 50 as high-altitude allowance. Amarinder Singh expressed his appreciation at the success of the job fairs, which have so far seen 10.70 lakh placements or recruitments or self-employment opportunities. The private sector has absorbed 3.75 lakh candidates, while 40,000 have been taken in by the government against vacancies, and the remaining have been facilitated self-employment, since the first job fair was held in August-September 2017. The Chief Minister noted with satisfaction the growing success rate of these job fairs, pointing out that the rate had gone up from 5 per cent in the first job fair to 56 per cent in the fifth, indicating the high level of enthusiasm among the candidates as well as the companies in search of talent.

Studying in Canada? Tips to survive student life
AS a college or university student, it’s quite natural to feel overwhelmed when you’ve made that journey away from home. It might

Stick to a budget: Student life comes with several big expenses – and all at once. Tuition, rent, books, etc. add up quickly, which often means taking on debt and managing payments. As an international student getting used to Canadian currency, budgeting and figuring out how much things cost can also be a challenge. It’s important to know and understand your budget prior to starting school so you can rework your personal finances to suit your new student lifestyle. Create a support system: While it’s important to make new friends, it’s a good idea to keep existing friends and family close. Those who’ve known you for years are great resources to lean on if you feel stressed. The balance of major milestones and prioritizing school can be especially challenging as an international student as you’re are also learning the way of life in Canada. Regular phone calls, video chats and checking in with family and friends back home can help you cope through all the change and challenges that this new life will bring. 2020 BMW M340i: Benchmark Sports Sedan Raises the Bar By Autoreviewman The BMW 3 Series is an icon. And for the 2020 model year, the seventh generation version of this superb sports sedan pare excellence arrives – wider, longer, taller, and having an extended longer wheelbase. It is now more of familial bent with all 3 Series featuring similar styling cues, the sleek roof line, bigger twin kidney grille and the addition of BMW laser lights on some models, with M Sport providing 19inch wheels, M Sport brakes and new front fascia’s. 3 Series interiors also become a tad roomier, with enhanced technology, styling and materials. Of particular interest are the performance M340i and 330i.
The 330i now has an as standard 255 hp and 295 lb-ft, while the new M340i aa tested arrives with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft, up 62 hp and 39 lb-ft on the 2018 340i! The 330i and 330e arrive with AWD, but the M340i will be available with Rear Wheel Drive or All Wheel Dive. All 3 Series get a single eight-speed automatic trans-
mission and updated Performance Chassis Technology. It goes without saying. Engineering and performance have all been improved. We tested a very handsome 2020 Model: (based priced at $61,850) M340i with a beautiful Cognac Vernasca Leather interior option. The M340i interior, is impressive as usual. A little
stark and obsessive, but just the way I think BMW drivers will like it- neat , efficient, exacting and of a superior quality, design and execution. The dash is updated with a fully digitized cockpit. Of course, it is on the road where the rearwheel drive BMW M340i as tested offers the pure driving experience that 3 Series enthusiasts have enjoyed for the past 40 years. With reduced weight compared to its all-wheel drive
sibling and enhanced steering feel compared to the outgoing models, the M340i is just that bit more exciting to drive than the heavier M340i, although the xDrive that has the slight edge in adverse road conditions. Not a lot to complain about. The biggest caveat is which one to go for - the rear wheel drive M340i or the Xdrive version. My money is one the M340i RWD- offering lower
weight, offering a shade more front end attack on fasts corners and quicker exiting. Pricing is actually pretty good considering the level of performance and equipment compared to the competition. Highly recommended for performance drivers everywhere. 2020 BMW M340i based priced at $61,850. Price as tested with options: $72,200. More info at www.bmw.ca
2019 Hyundai Elantra GT N Line: Performance hatchback Impresses!
By Autoreviewman New for 2019 is the Hyundai Elantra GT N Line a more performance orientated hot hatch, not as quick as the benchmark Volkswagen GTI or Honda Civic Si, but not far off. First off the Elantra GT N Line has the looks down with a lower front spoiler for better aerodynamics, a unique grille, black side mirrors, rear roof spoiler, N Line badges and 18-inch alloy wheels. It all looks very nice, sporty, yet understated. Engine wise, under the GT N Line’s hood instead of the Elantra GT’s 61-horsepower, normally aspirated 2.0L four-cylinder, is a GT N Line 1.6L turbocharged engine producing a very respectable 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-
ft. of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, or optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle-shifters. Other performance additives include bigger brakes, stiffer engine and transmission mounts, quicker steering and a specially tuned multi-link independent rear suspension to keep the car planted in hard cornering. The thoughtful, well appointed Elantra cabin has been jazzed up a little for the N-Line variant. There is an N Line leather-wrapped perforated steering wheel, sport front seats, circular ball, special instrument cluster and door trims, racy red seatbelts, stitching and accents. New is Hyundai’s AVN 5.0 infotainment system, and eight-inch touchscreen. The front cabin remains roomy and with the rear slightly squashed in the rear-seat legroom department if you are over six feet. Still the hatchback’s cargo capacity, is decent with a generous 705 litres with the rear seats up and a huge 1,560 litres when they’re folded. On the road, the Elantra N-Line offers lots of CONTINUED ON 19

LUZIA (G) **** Cirque Soars!
Familiarity breeds complacency. Most companies fail to innovate or take chances. Nothing could be further from the truth when it applies to Cirque du Soleil. Montreals’s most famous and successful company ( sorry Bombadier) continues to grow and reinvent itself. Fans of the tent that Guy La Liberte once upon a time built will thoroughly enjoy Luzia. Now showing under the big top on Concord Pacific Lands near Rogers Arena and Skytrain this is one show truly fit for the entire family and people of all ages. For years British Columbians have flocked to Mexico. Instead of traveling south get in That fiesta spirit right at home as Luzia is a wonderful rendition of all things Mexican. Right from the opening moments - actually even before that you will be swept away by all the humour and fun on tap here. And it’s non stop shenanigans coming at you in waves. Thanks to what must have been an army of workers the atmosphere, stunts, special effects and costumes will simply take your breath away. No bad seats exist
under the big top. Full of uplifting music with a great Mexican band, scores of instruments and an enchanting chanteuse we are given the key that unlocks a brave new world steeped in mystery and tradition. Told in two distinctive acts with a 25 minute intermission the first half of the show serves as a refreshing warm up To the ultra energetic second part. Along the way you will have little time to catch your breath or take your eyes off the sixty plus performers working their hearts out to deliver for you an unparalleled experience. And they exceed beyond all expectations. Water is a theme that runs throughout Luzia as does a trip to the rain forest. Highlights include giant animals and flora that come to life, a contortionist that harkens back to the days of sideshows lost long, long ago, twisting and turning and half-gainer gymnastics hopping from
one elevated platform to another, a soccer demonstration that would leave Pele dumbstruck not to mention high wire acts and a juggler than never gives up and a lot, lot more. Surreal costumes including bird like feathery nymphs, soaring hoop divers, serpent helmeted guardians and a spirit that never falters just goes to show you how creative the writers and imagineers are at this Montreal based dream factory. Even Walt Disney would be appreciative of the ingenuity that comes to life here in living color as a revolving stage adds to the excitement of it all. Folks should be glad Luzia is entrancing and thrilling British Columbians and visitors to our province in the heart of downtown Vancouver. How fitting it is that this trip to Mexico takes place on the previously abandoned Expo lands. Luzia is a trip you’ll truly and thoroughly enjoy. And never forget.

2019 Buick Envision: Luxury, Good Looks and Versatility in this CUV By Autoreviewman The 2019 Buick Envision is a mid- size 5-seater CUV was designed for the Chinese market where Buick does very well. Its styling, which was updated for 2019 is sleek, contemporary, with a nice heft to the design. Positioned as an entry-level premium CUV, the Envision arrives with a flurry of updates for 2019. There is a turbocharged engine upgrade that produces more low and mid –range torque, along with a with a 9-speed automatic transmission for better fuel economy. There is now a
deactivate feature for the automatic stop/start system, and improved headlights, backup camera, heated rear seats and Bluetooth microphone. There is also regular and adaptive cruise control, while wireless
smartphone charging is now featured. On the outside, there is a new winged-tri-shield grille and an updated fascia featuring chrome-ringed HID headlights that are now standard, along with rear LEDs. There
are also new optional 19-inch wheels. The Envision’ s first two trims levels come with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder DOHC engine that produces 197 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. The Premium trim ($45,400) adds the 252 hp turbo engine, an upgraded front suspension, 19-inch wheels, bi-LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, with lane departure warning and the an upgraded trip computer and a 7-speaker Bose sound system.
Every 2019 Envision comes standard with 10 airbags (front, front knee, front- and rear-side, side-curtain), a backup camera and OnStar emergency communications. The Envision interior reveals a premium wellcrafted cabin. Its typical luxury orientated Buick, with a nice level of design and execution. I like the smart dash and richly appointed leather seats. It is a roomy, lavish looking cabin for sure. On road habits are exemplary. The Envision handles well and is enjoyable to drive, although it’s a tad slow around corners. To sum up, the Buick
is fine family hauler that can be outfitted from a decent standard base spec all the way to an uber luxury and high technology equipped CUV that will satisfy every need. Not a lot to complain about, rear cargo capacity is on the small side, and fuel economy is an estimated City/Hwy 11.1/8.6 L/100 KM. The excellent combination of looks, equipment, fit and finish, means the Buick Envision will not disappoint for those looking for a very competent family CUV. 2019 Buick Envision priced from $38.300 - www.buick.ca
2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 35 Edition: Sports Sedan celebrates 35 years!
By Autoreviewman Volkswagen fans rejoice, for there is a brandnew, seventh generation 2019 Jetta in the showrooms. And for 2019 there is a new GLI 35th Anniversary Edition that commemorates 35 years since the first Jetta GLI launched in 1984, the GLI 35 offers a number of unique features, such as: red-accented wheels, more aggressive front fascia with the honeycomb grill and larger air intakes, a black roof, black mirror caps, a black decklid spoiler and special badging. At the rear
the GLI gets dual exhaust outlets in a custom diffuser. Under the GLI’s hood, is the 2.0-liter, turbocharged inline-four engine as found in the Volkswagen Golf GTI, producing 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque? A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and there is the option of a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic instead as found on our tester. On the engineering front, the GLI also receives front MacPherson struts, a multilink rear suspension, stiffer springs and a 0.6-inch lower ride height. There is added stopping power as well, as the 18-inch wheels have upgraded brakes - 13.4inch front discs and 11.8-inch rear discs, with racy red painted brake calipers. All GLIs come with Normal, Sport, Eco and Custom driving modes, The Jetta GLI also gets Volkswagen’s cool VAQ torque-vectoring front differential, along with the company’s XDS electronic diff lock, both of which help prevent
2019 Hyundai Elantra GT N Line CONTINUED FROM 13 thrills. The chassis and handling are superbly engineered and offer excellent on-road dynamics, making the N-Line agile and fun to drive. This is a wonderful car to drive, you sit firmly wrapped in the deeply supportive sport seats and
everything falls to the hand and feet with the excellent ergonomics. In closing, the NLine comes across as a very affordable sporty car that offers a mix of satisfying driving and ownership. Downsides are few, it seats four in comfort, five at a push. Although it’s a small front wheel drive
car, grip, and traction control is exceptional. Excellent engineering means the chassis has no discernible flex. Highly recommend if affordable performance is what you need. 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT NLine priced from $27,199 $30,699. More info at www. hyundai.ca
understeer and improve traction. The 35th Anniversary Edition Dynamic Chassis Control, also adds adaptive dampers at all four corners. The GLI’s interior is not differentiated much, the rich black leather seats have nice raised orange stitching details, carried over to the shifter knob gaiter. There is some grey carbon fibre trim and that’s about it. The stand out feature is the Digital Cockpit display - with its reconfigurable display. The 2019 Jetta ramps up on the technology front as well, with VW’s impressive new Android Auto and Apple CarPlay new enhanced
“MIB 2” infotainment system. On the road, the 35th Anniversary Edition tester was enjoyable to drive. I liked the quick steering and the way the Jetta handles, it’s fast with satisfying acceleration and takes corners with aplomb, thanks to its XDS cross differential system and sport tuned suspension Highly recommended if a sporty sedan with the Volkswagen badge is what you desire. 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 35 Edition: priced from - $32,445 plus options, freight and PDI.
