Kartarpur Corridor to be ready October 31 Dera Baba Nanak (Punjab) (IANS): The work on the muchanticipated Kartarpur Corridor for Indian pilgrims to visit the revered Sikh shrine across the border in Pakistan is expected to be completed by the end of this month and online registration for the pilgrimage will begin from Sunday. Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) Chairman Govind Mohan confirmed the completion of work to IANS from ground zero of the construction site at Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. Construction of the 4.2 kmlong corridor will be completed by October 31, a week before the celebrations to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, he said. The Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province, located 4.5 km from the border near Dera Baba Nanak, is highly revered among Sikhs as it was the place where Guru
before October 20. From October 20, pilgrims can register at online portal,” said Mohan, who is also an Additional Secretary in Ministry of Home Affairs. A passport is a must for devotees from India visiting Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara to pay obeisance, he added. To a query, the officer clarified
that visa will not be required but the visitors need to get themselves registered online at least a month ahead of their visit. The corridor is expected to be inaugurated on November 8 and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is to lead an all-party delegation across the border to Kartarpur Sahib on the opening day of the Kartarpur Corridor on November 9. The delegation that will accompany the Chief Minister to the historic gurdwara would comprise all the 117 state legislators, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab, Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) members, as well as members of the Sant Samaj and representatives of each recognised political party in the state. Thereafter, the LPAI chief said, 5,000 pilgrims will be able to visit the gurdwara every day and their visit would be completed in same day.
opposite is happening. “Now, people are losing jobs. The government believes in headline management and not taking concrete steps to resolve the problems,” Singh said. Taking a swipe at the BJP, he said that for “reaching the goal of five trillion dollar economy by 2024, the country would require a 10-12 percent GDP growth, but under the BJP government, the growth rate is declining steadily year after year”. The internationally-acclaimed economist pointed out that with a growth rate of 5.5-6 percent, economic problems would not be solved and the BJP’s goals of achieving “double-digit targets will
prove to be hollow”. Singh said that the current slowdown in the country coupled with government apathy has badly hit the Indian economy. “There is gloom in the automobiles hub of Pune, slowdown has led to a large number of factories shutting down in Maharashtraa. The state is hit by a grave economic crisis, but the government seems obsessed with trying to fix blame,” said Singh. He said that from being No. 1 in investments, Maharashtra has now become No. 1 in farmers suicides, and urged for setting up labourintensive industries, among other measures, to tackle the economic crisis.
Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara Nanak spent 18 years of his life and is his final resting place. Mohan said that pilgrims can apply online from October 20 for visiting the historic gurdwara through a website that was launched recently. “We are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Pakistan
Economic slowdown, government apathy affecting economy: Manmohan Singh
Mumbai (IANS): Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for the current economic slowdown and rural distress, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that merely “passing the buck to Congress would not work”. “The present government should have learned and provided credible solutions to resolve the problems confronting the Indian economy. Five-and-half years is sufficient time to solve issues. Passing the buck to the Congress for India’s problems does not work,” Singh said in a stern admonition to the government. He said that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Manmohan Singh “talks about a lot of things, that two crore [20 million] jobs will be provided, etc”, but exactly the

Hate crimes against religious minorities in India increased 300% following rise of BJP AMHERST, Massachusetts: An economist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has found a possible causal connection between the rise to political dominance of India’s right-wing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a significant increase in the incidence of hate crimes against the country’s religious minorities. In a recent working paper published by the UMass Amherst Political Economy Research Institute, Deepankar Basu has linked the massive parliamentary victory of the BJP in 2014 with a 300% increase in the level of antiminority hate crimes. Basu, associate professor of economics at UMass Amherst, used data from Citizen’s Religious Hate Crime Watch to create a state-level panel data set for 27 of India’s states and the National Capital Territory of Delhi, comparing the five years prior to and following the May 2014 election, in which
the BJP won over 31% of the popular vote and 282 of 543 seats in India’s lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha. He found increases in the number of incidents in 20 of the 28 states in the five years following the elections, with double-digit increases in eight states. In India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, incidents of hate crimes rose from just two in the period of 2009-13 to 45 in the period following the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, in which the BJP collected nearly 43% of the state’s popular vote. Rajasthan’s number of hate crimes rose from two to 20 after the BJP received over 55% of the election’s votes. Ten states and Delhi had zero incidents of hate crimes reported in the five years prior to the elections but suffered multiple hate crimes in the five years following, with Delhi, Bihar Gujarat and Jharkhand all seeing double-digit crimes
reported. “An election is a way in which information about attitudes, in this case antiMuslim attitudes, can be thought to be aggregated,” Basu writes. “Thus, BJP’s spectacular electoral victory in 2014 sent a signal to those holding strong anti-Muslim sentiments that such sentiments were widely held in society. Since the election campaigns by key BJP leaders had demonised and vilified Muslims, its victory made it acceptable to verbally and physically attack Muslims. Since key political leaders did not strongly condemn such attacks and law enforcement officials were lax, it reinforced the attacks on Muslims by creating and sustaining a culture of impunity. It is this social atmosphere that encouraged violent, and often lethal, attacks on Muslims across India.” Basu also collects reports of hate crimes in 2019, and sees the troubling trend
Onion, tomatoes, garlic stolen in Lucknow as prices soar Lucknow (IANS): Bizarre though it may sound but a man in Lucknow has been robbed of onions, garlic and tomatoes. The soaring prices of these vegetables apparently have a lot to do with the theft. The man targeted was Pappu Chaurasia, a vegetable vendor in Manas Enclave in Indira Nagar area here. On Monday night, Chaurasia wrapped up his business and shut his wayside shop by putting tarpaulin on the vegetables.
When he returned the next morning, he was aghast to see his vegetable strewn around and found that the bags of onions, garlic and tomatoes kept under the wooden planks were missing. Chaurasia informed his friends and they made inquiries all around. Finally, on Tuesday night, Chaurasia lodged a formal complaint with the Ghazipur police station. “I have suffered a loss of about Rs 10,000-12,000. It is surprising that the thieves
did not touch other vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage. Another thing is certain that the thieves were more than one and they had a vehicle to take away the bags of onions, tomatoes and garlic,” he said. Tomato is presently selling at Rs 70 per kg in Lucknow while onion is priced at Rs 45 per kg. Garlic is selling at Rs 200 per kg. Meanwhile, Ghazipur Circle Officer Deepak Kumar Singh, meanwhile said that the police was investigating the case - the first of its kind.
continuing, if not possibly increasing. “In this paper, I have limited my analysis to the end of 2018 to study comparable period before and after the 2014 elections. But incidents of anti-minority hate crimes have continued occurring in 2019 in an equally disturbing manner as in the previous five-year period,”
NEW
Basu writes. “In fact, since the end of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, which the BJP won in an even more decisive manner, the country has seen a spurt of hate crime incidents. Within a period of about 90 days, the country has witnessed horrific incidents of hate crimes, 13 of which were exclusively against Muslims.
It seems that the rate of occurrence of hate crimes against Muslims that had declined between 2017 and 2018 is about to reverse itself.” The complete working paper, “Majoritarian Politics and Hate Crimes Against Religious Minorities in India, 2009-2018,” is available online via PERI’s website.

Mamata meets Nobel Prize winner’s mother, seeks their services Kolkata (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday visited the south Kolkata residence of Nobel Prize in Economics winner Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee and said her government was keen to utilise his services as also that of his mother, also an economist of repute. Banerjee, an Indian-Ameri-
can, jointly bagged the prestigious award along with his wife Esther Duflo and economist Michael Kremer. Announcing the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the research conducted by the troika has considerably improved the ability to fight global poverty. Born in Mumbai in 1961,
Bannerjee is one of the leading development economists and is presently working as a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His wife is also a professor there. “We are all proud of him. In whatever way we can, and subject to the time he can spare, we want to involve

him in our government’s various efforts,” Banerjee told waiting media persons after spending around 40 minutes with the economist’s mother. The Chief Minister, who had congratulated US-based Banerjee on Twitter soon after the official announcement about the coveted award on Monday, went to his seventh floor apartment on Ballygunge Circular Road. She was welcomed by Banerjee’s mother Nirmala, also an economist of repute. The Chief minister said she briefed her about the

Muslim side denies judge’s 1886 observation favours Hindus
New Delhi (IANS): The Muslim side, on the last day of hearing in the Ayodhya title dispute on Wednesday, refuted the Hindu side’s claim that the observation of a district judge in 1886 was in their favour. Senior counsel Rajeev Dhavan, appearing for Muslim side, contended before the five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, that counsel of the Hindu side wrongly relied on the decision of the District Judge on March 18, 1886, to indicate the title was not denied by the judge by “making an observation it was too late to go into the issue”. Dhavan submitted the fact remains that the Commissioner on November 1, 1886, specifically decided the Hindus had no title and that they only had a prescriptive title. The Hindu side had said the Muslim parties chose not to file an appeal against these findings, which has attained finality. “Therefore, burden of proof does not lie on the Hindu parties to show that they held the disputed property to be sacred. It is the duty of the Muslim parties to displace the said findings while dealing with facts nearer to their ken,” they had argued. To this, Dhavan said if a finding is in Muslims’ favour, then an appeal does not need to be filed. “Appeals do not have to be filed on observations where a finding has been made. The Commissioner firmly repudiated the decision of the Dis-
trict Judge, clearing ambiguities. This decision is binding on the Hindus who cannot derive succour from an overruled decision,” he submitted. He insisted that the illegal destruction of the building does not eliminate the right of the Waqf Board to demand the area. Arguing on the aspect of Mughal conquest, Dhavan said there were massive conquests, thousands in recorded history, within India by various rulers against each other, even when they were of the same faith. “Were these conquerors different because they were Hindus?... The Muslims settled in India from 1206. Babur fought an India-settled ruler (Sultan Ibrahim Lodi) and Muslims from outside and those who accepted Islam live here. If the argument is made that India can only be perceived Hindu, this argument is communal,” he told the court. Later, Dhavan argued on the historical wrong cited by Hindus. “Argument was made Indian people needed protection from conquerors who came from outside. Under the Constitution, the protection prioritized are for SC/ST/OBC, women and children, minorities, all religions and those under 5th and 6th schedule,” he contended. The Muslim side, in its final argument, urged the court to grant it possession of the entire disputed site. After concluding the hearing on Wednesday, the top court has reserved its judgement in the Ayodhya title dispute.

What should I mix with my rum?
HAVE I been leading readers astray? For years this column has stressed that we’re all consuming too many calories, and in particular, too much sugar. I’ve always practiced what I write, so for years I’ve made sure it is a sugar-free cola that I add to my rum before dinner. But are these alternatives to sugar safe? Scientists at Tufts University report that the research on sugar substitutes continues to advance – yet few clear answers are apparent. For over 40 years, highly refined sugar substitutes have been on the market and common additives in drinks and foods. But for food safety, a cloud has always hung overhead. Dr. Alice H. Lichenstein, Director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at the USDA’s Human Nutrition Research Centre on Aging and a Professor at Tufts University, explains that sugar substitutes have various names like high intensity sweeteners, nonsugar sweeteners, low calorie sweeteners which can lead to confusion about their sources and properties. Moreover, a wide variety of compounds are used in sugar substitutes and they may not always behave the same way in the body. Lichenstein adds that some high-intensity sweeteners are 100 to 20,000 times sweeter than sugar! This means that individuals need consume only tiny amounts to achieve the sweetness of sugar. In fact, most sugar substitutes are non-nutritive
and not absorbed by the body. So what are the potential dangers of sugar substitutes? Lichenstein says most research has been done on beverages. The greatest risk seems to be the tendency of some to make other unhealthy choices as a result of using sugar substitutes in drinks. Lichenstein advises that if you seek to lose weight, “Substituting beverages sweetened with sugar substitutes in place of those sweetened with sugar may be helpful, but make sure you’re not compensating by picking up those calories somewhere else.” The Diabetes Association agrees that decreased caloric intake is of paramount importance to decrease the risk of Type 2 diabetes. And if this can be achieved by using sugar sweeteners, they can be a valid way to halt the epidemic. And using them for foods, as well as beverages, may be a beneficial option. What about dental health? It’s generally accepted that replacing sugar with sugar substitutes reduces the risk of dental decay. And some studies suggest that the sugar alcohol xylitol in chewing gum may help to prevent the development of cavities. So how much should we be worrying about sugar substitutes? It appears that we are still waiting for a definitive study that shows sugar substitutes are totally safe. And there is some lingering concern that sugar substitutes make it too easy for people to choose a low-sugar sweet treat than a serving of nutrient rich vegetables, nuts or fruits. You may wonder whether I`m going to change my pre-dinner routine. Regular readers know I prefer natural remedies to prescription drugs. So it’s a good question: why would I use a manufactured sugar substitute rather than a natural sugar? Weight is not a problem for me. I step on a scale each day and make sure it always reads the same. But nonetheless, I am no fan of sugar, and I want to limit my intake. I’ll take the chance on an artificial sweetener in the cola that mixes with my daily dose of rum. My wife reminds me that there is sugar in the rum too! But I’m convinced the health benefits of alcohol in moderation have contributed to my good health
and longevity. So I’ll stick with my poison! Remember, I’m not your doctor, and you must always get good medical advice. But if you are overweight and a candidate for Type 2 diabetes, sugar substitutes may be helpful. In my view, obesity is a far greater health hazard than sugar substitutes. IMF cuts India’s Financial Year 2020 growth forecast to 6% New Delhi (IANS): The outlook for the Indian economy for the current fiscal seems to get bleaker by the day as major economic forums and institutions have of late revised the country's GDP forecast downwards, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) being the latest in the fray. The IMF in its World Economic Outlook released on Tuesday
cut its forecast for GDP growth for financial year 2019-20 to 6 per cent, a sharp revision from its previous outlook of 7 per cent growth, released in July. It also reduced the growth forecast for the next fiscal by 0.2 percentage points to 7 per cent. "India's economy is set to grow at 6.1 percent in 2019, picking up to 7 percent in 2020. The downward revision relative to
the April 2019 WEO of 1.2 percentage points for 2019 and 0.5 percentage point for 2020 reflects a weaker-than-expected outlook for domestic demand," it said. The report, however, added that growth will be supported by the "lagged effects" of monetary policy easing, a reduction in corporate income tax rates and recent measures to ad-

dress corporate and environmental regulations. The IMF's outlook comes days after a World Bank report pegged India's growth rate in FY 2019-20 at 6 per cent, and the Reserve Bank of India's latest downward revision to 6.1 per cent. It further observed that monetary policy and broad-based structural reforms should be used to address cyclical weakness and strengthen confidence in India. A credible fiscal consolidation path is needed to bring down India's elevated public debt over the medium term, it added. "This should be supported by subsidy-spending rationalisation and tax base enhancing measures. Governance of
public sector banks and the efficiency of their credit allocation needs strengthening, and the public sector's role in the financial system needs to be reduced." Reforms to hiring and dismissal regulations would help incentivise job creation and absorb the country's large demographic dividend, the IMF said, adding that land reforms should also be enhanced to encourage and expedite infrastructure development. The IMF's global outlook, also weakened as it projected the world economy to grow at 3 per cent in 2019, 0.2 percentage point lower than its previous estimate. "The world economy is projected to grow
at 3.0 percent in 2019 a significant drop from 2017-18 for emerging market and developing economies as well as advanced economies -- before recovering to 3.4 percent in 2020," the IMF's outlook said. It, however, projected a slightly higher global growth rate for the period of 2021-24. "This global growth pattern reflects a major downturn and projected recovery in a group of emerging market economies. By contrast, growth is expected to moderate into 2020 and beyond for a group of systemic economies comprising the United States, euro area, China, and Japan, which together account for close to half of global GDP."

New Delhi (IANS): Former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar and his actress wife Farheen were booked in a criminal case by the Delhi Police on Thursday on the basis of a First Information Report lodged by London-based NonResident Indian, Sandhya Prabhakar, first wife of the ex-cricket star. In her FIR lodged with Malviya Nagar police station, Sandhya alleged that Prabhakar, backed by a few top politicians, connived with police officers and fraudulently sold off her flat in south Delhi. When Sandhya tried to approach the couple, she was threatened with dire consequences by Farheen. The first wife, Sandhya, who is three years elder to Prabhakar, alleged that his second wife Farheen (eight years younger to the cricketer) demanded Rs 1.50 crore [Rs 15 million] to return the property. In her FIR, Sandhya has accused Prabhakar of hatching a conspiracy with Farheen and a few aides to grab her property. Police sources said that though it appears to be a family dispute but an enquiry into the sequence of events have revealed that Farheen had been eyeing the property. Farheen, known for her ‘Madhuri Dixit looks’, started her career with Tamil and Kannada films but her charm brought her to Mumbai film indus-
try. After screening a few Hindi films, Farheen finally left Bollywood to marry Prabhakar, after his relations with Sandhya soured. The FIR was lodged on October 17, though the incident came to light on October 1 when Sandhya’s complaint relating to her flat, locked by Prabhakar and Farheen, was received by the police reportedly on the instructions of a senior Delhi Police officer. In her FIR, Sandhya revealed that second floor flat 7/18, in Sarvpriya Vihar was bought by her second husband, Lakshmi Chand Pandit (now deceased) in 1995. All the documents in the purchase of the said flat were duly registered in the name of Lakshmi Chand. Sandhya lived on the premises till 2006 and then the flat was used by her brother and a friend till August 2018. Afterwards, the family used the flat on and off. Sandhya alleged that in July 2019, she came to know from her brother that Prabhakar’s men had unlocked the flat and occupied it. Incidentally, Prabhakar and his second wife, along with two sons, live on the first floor of the same apartment. The police said that investigation into the case had been launched and statements of the former cricketer and his second wife would be recorded.

Congress always treated Akal Takht with respect: Amarinder Chandigarh (IANS): In a stinging response to Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s latest tirade against his government, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday reminded her that it was her own Shiromani Akali Dal regime that had shamelessly heaped humiliation on the Akal Takht Jathedar. On the contrary, his government has always treated the Sikh temporal seat with exemplary respect, he said. “For 10 years, the Akalis, including Harsimrat Kaur, had been totally drunk on power, sparing neither the Akal Takht nor the people of Punjab from their tyrannical control,” said the Chief Minister, asking the Union Minister to “stop indulging in such blatant falsehoods for her petty political gains”. “Everyone knows how you (Akalis) maliciously ill-treated Akal Takht Jathedars out of sheer arrogance, and continue to abuse the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) by dictating terms to them,” Amarinder Singh said, reacting to Harsimrat Kaur’s allegations about his government over the issue of joint celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th birth anniver-
forfeiture of the BJP candidates’ deposits in the campaign for the Haryana elections. “Their obnoxious double standards had long been exposed to the people of Punjab, who have
outright rejected the Akali leadership time and again, since their absolute rout in the 2017 Assembly polls in the state,” he said.

Modi to open Kartarpur Sahib corridor in November Chandigarh (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Kartarpur Sahib corridor linking India with historical Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, where Guru Nanak Dev breathed his last, in Pakistan in November and its construction work would be completed by October 31. This was decided at a high-level meeting held on Monday between officials of the Central and the state governments in Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur. The Union government was represented by Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and the state by Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. The 4.2 km-long corridor is to be opened on the occasion of the 550th Prakash Purb celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev on November 9. Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal had tweeted on Saturday that Modi will inaugurate the Kartarpur corridor on November 8. The delegation inspected undergoing projects at the international border after which they held a meeting with officers at the Integrated Check Post, a state government statement said. The officers also visited the spot where the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a rally.
Amarinder hails decision to release 5 Punjab policemen Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday welcomed the Centre’s decision to release, on humanitarian grounds, five police personnel languishing in various prisons of the state for human rights violations allegedly committed during the militancy period in Punjab. Thanking Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the decision, the Chief Minister hoped that the central government would also give due cognizance to favourably consider his plea to release other cops whose release he had sought last month on humanitarian grounds. Granting special remission and release of five of the around 20 personnel, the Union Home Minister has termed it a decision motivated by humanitarian and compassionate consideration. The decision comes within days of the central government’s announcement on grant of special dispensation for nine Sikh prisoners in various prisons in the country. Amarinder Singh had written to Shah in September seeking the release of about 20 police personnel, pointing out that these men had acted while fighting terrorism, sponsored from across the border, in the interest of Punjab and the country. Some of these police personnel were, in fact, suffering from serious or terminal illnesses and deserved the Centre’s mercy, he added, pointing out that these men risked their lives during the dark days of terrorism for the nation, without any personal vested interests. Most of the men whose release had been sought by the Chief Minister were now of advanced ages. The Chief Minister had further pointed out that around 1,800 police officers of various ranks sacrificed themselves during the terrorism days, while fighting proxy war with terrorists to protect the unity and integrity of the country.

‘Pak seems reluctant to complete bridge to Kartarpur Sahib’
Dera Baba Nanak (Punjab) (IANS): A bridge that would play a major role in connecting India and Pakistan’s sides of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor is yet to be constructed as the neighbouring country has been showing reluctance over the issue. The bridge would link Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab’s Gurdaspur and Kartarpur Sahib, situated 4.5 km from the border in Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province, and the pilgrims would use it while their visit to the shrine. India’s work is almost on completion mode and the officials linked to the corridor indicated that
the portion of the bridge being constructed from this side would be completed before October 31, but there is no word from Pakistan over their schedule. Pakistan has not even shared its intention whether it would complete the remaining part of the bridge from its side, said an official in know of developments on the project. Some officials in the internal security wing of the Indian government told IANS on condition of anonymity that Pakistan’s “dilly-dallying” attitude led them to construct an alternative path linking the two sides so that Kartarpur Corridor is ready
on time. Devotees from India wishing to visit Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara where Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak Dev spent the last 18 years of his life and is his final resting place, would use the alternative route which is constructed just a few metres away from the bridge and situated around 300 metres away from the International Border between India and Pakistan. As per current scenario, the pilgrims would take the alternative road to visit Kartarpur Sahib after parking their vehicle at the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) being constructed here for their
facility. “The bridge will be constructed from our side before October 31. As the bridge from Pakistan side is not complete we have adopted an alternative path which is constructed around 300 metres away from the border and near to the bridge constructed our side. Pilgrims would go from that path and also return back using it,” said Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) Chairman Govind Mohan. “After completion of the bridge from Pakistan side, pilgrims will go and return from the bridge.”
New hub for NSG commandos to come up in Punjab soon Gurgram (IANS): In view of recent intelligence inputs about Pakistan-backed terror activities in Punjab such as through arms drops using drones, the National Security Guard (NSG) plans to establish a new functional hub for the elite counterterrorism force in the vicinity of Amritsar and Pathankot. The force has also increased its presence in Jammu and Kashmir and a functional hub is already in place there. NSG Director General S.S. Deswal announced the plans on the occasion of 35th Raising Day of the counter-terrorism unit which was raised in 1984, and operates under the Union Home Ministry. Observing that the neighbouring country does not follow the ethics and has been instrumental in continuous terror activities in India, he said: “A new functional hub would be established in the vicinity of Amritsar and Pathankot very soon. Work is in progress. A latest such hub is functional in Srinagar from the last one year.” “In case of any emergency in Jammu and Kashmir, NSG teams respond to maintain safe and secure environment.”
NSG commando It is learnt that Centre is in talks with Punjab government to decide a feasible spot in the vicinity of Amritsar and Pathankot to build the NSG hub. Deswal also said that the NSG is well-equipped and prepared to handle any adverse situation including terror attacks, from its current six operational centres. “Each centre has full capability to handle all situations like a terrorist attack, hijacking, and hostage captivity among others,” he said. The NSG, which was first deployed in Kashmir ahead of the Amaranth Yatra in 2018, it increased its strength in the crucial region since then. “Now a fully functional hub is active in Srinager,” said another NSG official in the know of developments. “The idea is to reduce distance. We have trained our boys to operate
in rural, snow-bound areas of Kashmir as well.” To a query about abrogation of Article 370, the NSG chief said there is no question about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir after scrapping of the article from the state, but it is that “Pakistan is always up to mischief ”. Asked over NSG’s capabilities to tackle drones which were, last month, used to ferry arms from Pakistan to Punjab, Deswal said: “We have the ability to spot a drone and also to neutralise it.” He also clarified that both the Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) are capable and well equipped to handle drones and stop smuggling of arms. “NSG is ready to contribute if the need arises. We are also equipped with technology and arms to identify the movement of drones both in day and night and neutralise it.” Asserting that the NSG has shown its capabilities in previous terror attacks, Deswal said whatever information they receive is shared with all security agencies and they are capable of tackling any future attack.

Here’s what Akshay Kumar says on his train journey with cast of ‘Housefull 4’ New Delhi (India) (ANI): Bollywood ‘Khiladi’ Akshay Kumar along with the entire cast of ‘Housefull 4’ piqued the curiosity of their fans and took a unique way of promoting their upcoming film. The star cast of the film including Riteish Deshmukh, Chunky Panday, Kriti Sanon, Bobby Deol, Kriti Kharbanda, and Pooja Hegde has boarded a special train from Mumbai to Delhi to do the promotion of the film where they can be seen having a great
time traveling together. Akshay, who is known to serve something unique on the platter for his fans, expressed his happiness over the initiative. “I think it is a great idea, along with Sajid Nadiadwala and Fox Star Studios, they came up with an idea that we can do something like this and we got the permission very fast and here we are. It’s a great idea, which is gonna be fun,” he said. “We’ve just started with our journey. It’s only been 40 mins
and soon we would be reaching Surat. Then the next stop would be Baroda, then Kota, Mathura and finally Delhi,” the 52-year-old actor added while giving a brief about their journey. Not just this, the actor even shared a picture from their journey in the train where the entire team can be seen striking a picture pose while flaunting their smiles. “It’s a HouseFull of smiles as the #Housefull4Express journey kickstarts!” he tweeted. This new inno-
vative move of promoting a film on the train comes after the Indian Railways has brought about a new and interesting addition to its services and has inaugurated its ‘Promotion on Wheels.’ The multi-starrer film, which promises to be a hilarious roller coaster ride much like its earlier avatars, is produced by Nadiadwala Grandso n and co-produced by Fox Star Studios and is slated to hit the silver screens on October 25. Aishwarya Rai transforms into black magic woman as she attends Maleficent trailer launch Actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan attended the trailer launch of Disney’s upcoming film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil on Monday. The actor is voicing the lead character in the film’s Hindi version, originally played by Angelina Jolie.
Talking about the experience, Aishwarya said, ‘When you’re the actor, you work with the director on sets and know where and how you want to play a character. When you go to do dubbing, you decide the way you want to essay a particular scene because you had enacted it. But this time I was going to do voice-over for a role enacted by another actor and then we were changing the language... It was a collaborative effort on arriving at how to say those lines.’ The 45-year-old actor said Jolie has played the title character in a slightly theatrical manner. ‘There is a theatrical manner in which she says her lines, because of her physicality, the way she’s created the character, that makes her speak in a certain way. First day, we did it like a match, almost the way she had done it and then we revisited some scenes to tweak and change it. So the entire exercise was very interesting and new... It’s a classic story and has classic emotions which are addressed in the drama of it,” Aishwarya said. French makeup artist and hairstylist Florian Hurel worked on Aishwarya’s look for the trailer. Sharing images of Aishwarya, he posted on Instagram, “@aishwaryaraibachchan_arb lend her voice as the Maleficent. And I tried to lend my hair skill for it.” “Worked a revisited double French roll for the promo of The Maleficent by Disney @ aishwaryaraibachchan_arb . @mickeycontractor @falgunipeacock,” he captioned another image of the Bollywood star. Hurel
has earlier worked with Priyanka Chopra Jonas in The Sky Is Pink and Deepika Padukone for her recent magazine shoot. Talking about Aishwarya’s involvement in the film, Bikram Duggal of Disney India
had said in a statement, “Looking at how Angelina Jolie fits Maleficent’s role down to the letter, it was hard to imagine anyone else essaying the character other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for our local audience.
We wanted to build a strong connect and bring her character to life in Hindi and felt Aishwarya’s persona which is filled with elegance and poise would be a perfect blend. Maleficent is set to release on October 18.

Redesigned: 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback Markham, ON: The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback returns with updated exterior styling and new interior trim. It goes on-sale in Canada on September 13, 2019, with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $24,1901 (excluding $1,655 destination and handling), joining the 2020 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe which were refreshed last year. Exterior styling refinements to the 2020 Civic Hatchback lineup include revised styling of the lower bumper fog light housings, which now feature a body-color crossbar. The Honda-signature “wing” grille crossbar is also updated, and the headlights now feature a sporty blackout treatment. In the rear, the lower bumper openings receive similar changes to the front, with a new body-color crossbar. All trims feature new wheel designs, in either dark gray or black. Sport Touring trims also benefit from improved LED headlights with wider and longer light beams. Inside the 2020 Civic Hatchback, new dash trim differentiates various trim levels, with Sport trims receiving a new geometrical pattern and Sport Touring an exclusive brushed black treatment. The Sport trim also adds an 8-way power driver’s seat in place of manual adjustments. Sport Touring trims also now come with HomeLink®. All Civic Hatchbacks also benefit from additional
upholstery unique to Sport trims, and a new embossed dash trim similar to what’s found on the Sport trim introduced last year for Civic Sedan. For the line-topping Sport Touring trim HomeLink® is also standard. In addition to being the best-selling car in its class, the Honda Civic has
sound insulation in the floor, trunk, and front and rear fenders. This year’s changes build on model year 2019 changes, which included the addition of the Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driver-assistive systems as standard equipment on all trims, and multiple usability updates. Sleek, futuristic, and head turning, there are elements of Chevrolet’s Camaro sports car in the steeply raked A pillars, the wide trapezoidal grille and the squinting LED headlights An aggressive side profile is underscored by a rearward rising character line that squares off the C window. A rakish spoiler finishes off the look. There are two engine
options: a 2.5L 4-cylinder or a 3.6L V6. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic only. The Blazer can be had in either front or all-wheel drive. The RS model as tested comes standard with the V6, which produces a respectable 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque; The 2.5L four banger makes 193 hp and 188 lb-ft. In terms of trims, the Blazer is offered in five main grades: 2.5L, 3.6L, True North, RS and Premier. Our tester was equipped with the Sun and Wheels pack-
age ($2,795) that adds a power panoramic sunroof, 21-inch gloss aluminum wheels and all-season tires. Equipment levels on the sporty RS ($2,795) option package, are high, the RS comes as standard with: leather heated front seats, heated steering wheel, 8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB ports (2 type-A, two type-C), 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, six-speaker audio, active noise cancellation, dual-zone climate control, and more. Before You Know It (PG) *** Theatre 101!
Comedy fans and admirers of all things theatrical should warmly embrace Before You Know It. Brought to B.C. by Taro PR this lively look at a mixed up family will bring warm smiles to onlookers at the Van City Theatre and is now available on various cable systems and video in demand. Family matters. Our tale here is completely different and deserves praise for being somewhat original. Before you Know it is all the theatre and has that New York Woody Allen vi e to it. Dark comedy is in and Mandy Patinkin rises to the occasion as a struggling actor trying to keep a losing small town theatre afloat. Acting is in this man’s but he is helped endlessly by two doting middle aged daughters who keep the deteriorating enterprise afloat. The two sisters don’t exactly see eye
to eye on a variety of things and their personal ( and not so person lives) are In a shambles. And when a dark secret from the past surfaces it hurtles an already confusing and desperate situation into a deep dark hole. Those who enjoy the business side of show business and
watching a zany family try to eke out an existence let alone a living will find this film appealing. Different is good and with a top cast including Alec Baldwin and a well defined artistic atmosphere that’s played up,for laughs turns Before You Know It into an enjoyable lark.
