United Sikhs raises funds, calls for justice in the wake of Houston cop Dhaliwal’s murder
HOUSTON, Texas: A Texas sheriff’s deputy who was described as “a trailblazer” for being the first Sikh deputy in his agency is being remembered for his compassion, warm smile and for a life marked by service to others. Funeral services were held Wednesday near Houston for Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal. The 42-year-old was fatally shot Friday (September 27) during a traffic stop. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Dhaliwal was “a man of dedication, faith, love and compassion.” “There are no words to speak to how heartbroken we are, how devastated,” Gonzalez added. KHOU-TV said there were two funeral services, a procession and a 21-gun salute with a flyover. Many wore navy blue at the request of the Sikh National Center, just like the uniform Dhaliwal proudly wore, the station added. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, the nation’s first Sikh state’s attorney general, said Dhaliwal “inspired an entire generation of Sikhs to public service.” Dhaliwal was shot dead multiple times in the head from behind during a mid-day traffic stop, authorities said. “He wore the turban, he represented his community with integrity, respect and pride and he was respected by all,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a press conference on Friday night. According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Mike Lee, Dhaliwal pulled over a vehicle around 12.45 p.m. on Friday in the 14800 block of Willancy Court in the Cypress area. Lee said the dashcam video showed that Dhaliwal and the
Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal suspect, Robert Solis, 47, still in his car, having a conversation with no sign of confrontation. A few seconds after Dhaliwal returned to his squad car, the suspect ran up and shot him in the head multiple times, Lee said. Dhaliwal was airlifted to the hospital, where he died. Solis was charged late Friday with capital murder in the case, The Houston Chronicle reported. A woman who was outside gardening heard the shot and saw Solis run to a getaway car. Lee said the suspect then went to a store nearby. After a brief search, authorities detained Solis, who has a criminal record that includes convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated kidnapping and driving while intoxicated. Following the death of Dhaliwal, a 10-year veteran of Harris County Sheriff’s Office who served as Director of Homeland Security for the United Sikhs organization, the organization last week on Friday
Deputy Dhaliwal (far right) with family and Sheriff Adrian Garcia. launched a GoFundMe campaign. The fund had raised more than $200,000 of its $800,000 goal by Wednesday. The organization’s legal department is also working with local authorities to ensure the assailants behind his murder will be brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law. “Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal was a gift to the world,” said Gurvinder Singh, International Director of Sikh Aid programs for United Sikhs. “He is a hero, a devout Sikh American that spread seva (selfless service) in all walks of life. Sandeep was a wonderful role model to the community, the nation and a world ambassador of seva. Wherever there was misery, a call for help, the need to give back — we would find Sandeep leading the way forward championing for all communities.” Dhaliwal proudly served Harris County, Texas, his country and the world as a public servant and humanitarian. In the wake of hurricanes Harvey and Maria, he
led teams of United Sikh volunteers to provide disaster relief to those in need across Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. In Punjab, India, he led the effort to help us provide humanitarian aid for farmers working to survive a record drought. In his role as Homeland Security Director, Dhaliwal advised the NGO and the national Sikh community on how to remain vigilant against any potential threats of hate crimes and advocate for their religious rights. United Sikhs established a fund via gofundme for Dhaliwal’s wife and three young children to help support their education needs and to continue his aspirations to uplift humanity and his fellow first responders. Within the first few hours of launching the campaign, more than $30,000 in donations poured in from supporters around the world. The link is available at: www.gofundme.com/f/rest-inpeace-deputy-singh

‘Bharat Hindu Rashtra hai’: RSS chief’s stunning declaration New Delhi (IANS): On Tuesday, RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat made a non pretentious statement where he claimed India is a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ during a book launch in Delhi. “We can change everything. All the ideologies can be changed, but the only one thing that cannot change is that ‘Bharat ek Hindu Rashtra hai’ (India is a Hindu nation)”, announced Bhagwat. Invoking subtle Hindutva, RSS supremo took the names of Hanuman, Shivaji and RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in the same breath, on Tuesday. RSS, in spite of its Hindu Rashtra claim, seemed seeped on a serious image makeover when its chief voluntarily spoke on homosexuality. Bhagwat said the issue can be addressed through discussions. “There have been examples in Mahabharata, ancient armies, not in vedas,” he said giving a stamp of tacit acceptance. In fact, this is not the first time but in 2018, he had hinted at Sangh’s change of stance on homosexuality. During the three-day mega event ‘Bharat of Future - An RSS perspective’, Bhagwat had said, homosexuals exist and the society needs to change with time.
called “militant outfit”, following a visit to its Nagpur headquarters by German Ambassador Walter J. Linder. On Tuesday, Bhagwat invited people to visit RSS and remove their “false notion” about the Sangh. “Come to Sangh, stay here for 2-2.5 years and remove your false notions about the Sangh,” requested Bhagwat. But in spite of portraying such a
While much of his speech was on projecting a liberal face of the RSS, Bhagwat stressed on the importance of dissent, even within the RSS. “Hamare yahan matbhed ho sakta hai, manved nahi” (We can have differences in RSS, not acrimonious differences), said Bhagwat, after launching “The RSS: Roadmap for 21st century”, a new book by Sunil Ambekar, head of ABVP, the students wing of the saffron outfit. Putting the focus on the liberal face of the Sangh, he said, its not necessary that everyone within the RSS have to have a similar view on a single issue. In fact, he said dissent within RSS is normal. But he said, RSS doesn’t believe in debates but
reaching a consensus. Tuesday’s speech of Bhagwat is in sync with RSS’ effort off late to demystify itself. “RSS doesn’t believe in banning books, whatever it may say about us. Even if we don’t agree with the view, RSS never asks for a ban,” he said. Heaping praises on Ambekar, the author and a senior RSS functionary, Bhagwat called the book an honest effort to tell the world about the saffron outfit that has often been vilified in the foreign press. Interestingly, Bhagwat invited around 70 foreign journalists in Delhi to answer queries about the organisation he heads just a few days back. The move came after the RSS received bad press where it has been

MP sex scam: Ex-ministers, top babus, TV reporter under scrutiny Bhopal (IANS): A former MP cabinet minister had to resign following a ‘sting operation’ by the honey-trap syndicate in 2016. After watching the twominute video, authenticated by forensic experts, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership paved the way for his ouster from the government. Now, videos of two other Ministers in the erstwhile Shivraj Singh Chouhan government,
have been authenticated by the special investigation team (SIT) of the MP Police, probing one of the biggest sex and blackmail scandals in the state. The SIT is also probing the role of a Delhi-based Hindi television journalist for allegedly negotiating extortion deals with victims on behalf of the honeytrap syndicate. MP Chief Minister Kamal Nath, who is personally monitoring
the investigation into the honey-trap sleaze that has rattled the upper echelons of power in the state, has assured that investigation will not be a political witch-hunt. Help of the best forensic and cyber experts has been sought to identify the ‘targets’ who succumbed to the blackmail and obliged the accused by granting lucrative government contracts and huge funds from
the social sector schemes. The video of the former Minister in the Chouhan government, purportedly shown in the compromising position, was recorded using a high quality hidden camera fitted with a microphone. The woman, shown in the video footage with a clear audio, has reportedly been identified by lynchpin Shweta Jain as one of her aides. A 42-second footage of the Minister has gone viral in MP, causing panic in the state secretariat corridors. Names of several serving bureaucrats too have cropped up in the scandal. In some cases, phone calls and sex chats of ‘targets’ were recorded through the help of a Bengaluru-based tech company. Several VIPs ‘in action’ were video-graphed at a private guest house and a flat in a posh locality of Bhopal, owned by Shweta Vijay Jain. On the involvement in the sleaze of politicians, mostly belonging to the BJP, party General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya reiterated that the Congress government had launched a witch-hunt to malign his party’s image. Responding to that, Congress spokesperson K.K. Mishra told
Shweta Jain IANS investigation was aimed at identifying those who granted lucrative government contracts to a criminal syndicate “in lieu of sexual favours.” “The Congress has requested Kamal Nath for a through probe and expose everybody, including Congress leaders, if involved,” said Mishra who initially pointed to the sex scandal. According to a leading daily published from Indore, the TV reporter who hails from MP is an central government-accredited journalist. The reporter was hand-in-glove with Shweta Jain and was allegedly negotiating extortion amount with Indore Municipal Corporation engineer Harbhajan Singh, the man who filed an FIR against the syndicate and opened the can of worms and kicked up the stink of sex, sleaze and blackmail prevailing at the top
echelons of the government. While Shweta Jain’s aides identified high-profile ‘targets’ and honey-trapped them, the TV journalist in Delhi would approach them with the video clips and negotiate the extortion. According to SIT sources, the team is examining 92 incriminating video clips of former Ministers, IAS and IPS officers. The sleazy footage also included a few Congress MLAs. “Over a few thousand video clips, sex chats, phone recordings of known and unknown person were recovered from the 3 laptops and 12 mobile phones seized from arrested five women, including the honey-trap-cum-extortion mastermind Shweta Jain. At present, the SIT is zeroing in on select clips to identify VIPs featuring in the them,” a source told IANS. Sources said SIT chief Sanjeev Shami has set up different teams to identify officials and politicians involved in the sex-cum-extortion scandal and their role in granting favours to the accused by allotting lucrative government contracts to private firms or providing funds to NGOs owned by the syndicate lynch-pin.

Rotten law, rotten politicians, rotten eggs
MONTHS ago, I wrote a bracelet could be worn by those opposed to medical assistance in dying (MAID). The bracelet would protect those individuals, and the law’s restrictive, now seemingly unconstitutional, conditions could be relaxed for those who want access to MAID. I sent a letter and the column to every Member of Parliament (MP) and Senator in Canada urging a rewrite of the law. I’ve delayed writing another column on this topic so our elected and appointed leaders could respond. So what happened? First, there was an avalanche of mail from readers in response to my initial column. From JR – It’s a brilliant solution to a difficult problem. Congratulations for your efforts to ensure human rights for all. SW says – Your article makes more sense than I have seen in years. Politicians take years of useless studies before making the wrong decision. Another replied – I do not want others to feed me, change diapers, give me a cookie and then have someone to play the accordion. From Calgary – My husband died in terrible pain in spite of morphine. Humans should be treated with the same common sense and compassion we treat loved animals. Please keep up the pressure on politicians to change our NOT COMPLETE LAW. It makes total sense to use the bracelet just
as it’s used for alerting doctors of a person’s allergy or diabetes. Several readers accused politicians, and some doctors, of tossing the Hippocratic Oath out the window when it comes to endof-life-suffering. They wrote of being treated like children who could not make up their own minds about when and how to die. From SB – It’s hard to believe how we keep going backward. I keep hoping that someday we will start moving forward. Thanks for your No Nonsense writing. How can anyone disagree with letting the bracelet decide? One reader has this sage advice, “I tell people just because I don’t like peas, doesn’t mean they can’t eat them. Let each person decide vital issues for themselves.” I expected several readers might find ways to disagree with the bracelet suggestion. But it did not happen. One reader, although in pain, said he was not ready to exchange the temporary for the eternal, but added his opinion might change in a few years. Others replied that they did not want to end their lives by stepping in front of a truck, or other means of suicide. Rather, they wanted to leave on their own terms. For politicians to deny it is an egregious prohibition. Or, as another remarked, he hoped “the kids on the hill would get the message and smarten up.” So how many of the 443 MPs and Senators replied? It’s was a single Senator, but no mention of trying to change the law. It’s a shameful response. Although the pen can be mightier than the sword, in this case the pen failed miserably. Old-fashioned common sense proved to be an uncommon commodity. I’ve pondered what will it take to get politicians to do their job. When will they acknowledge that thousands of patients are needlessly dying in pain? When will the Advanced Directives of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, signed while still mentally competent, be respected? When will the extreme suffering, not imminent death, of cancer patients and others experiencing excruciating quality of life be a benchmark for compassionate care? So I have a burning desire to toss rotten
eggs at Parliament, as a signal of extreme disappointment and frustration. It’s not because I have disrespect for these buildings or the institution. Rather, I have an intense disrespect for MPs and Senators who allow this suffering to continue. In case I cannot resist it, I’ll gather rotten eggs. I’d like your opinion. Security at Amritsar airport beefed up after drone crash New Delhi (IANS): A week after the Punjab Police found arms drop by drones along the Indo-Pakistan border in Punjab, the government has stepped up security at the Amritsar’s Guru Ramdas Internation-

border.” The source said, the Indian Air Force (IAF) earlier last week issued the orange alert following the recovery of the drones from the border area. “So keeping in mind the security threat to the Amritsar airport, snipers have been placed at the watch towers and other important places at the airport along with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF),” the source said. He said, the security was beefed up three to four days ago. “And the high security at the airport will remain for next four to five days,” he added. A total of eight terrorists were arrested till September 27. Investigations so far has revealed that Pakistan-based terror outfits have been smuggling arms into Punjab through drones since August. Revelations by arrested militants of the Khalistan Zindabad Force led to recovery of a China-made drone, the second one that was used to airdrop arms and ammunition from Pakistan into India’s Punjab, from a village close to the border in Amritsar district on Friday. A team of the state’s counter-intelligence wing took militants Akashdeep Singh and Shubhdeep Singh to Mahawa village in Amritsar district, where they had hidden the drone in bushes.
Shubhdeep Singh was arrested on Thursday. He was the seventh person arrested in the case. During interrogation, the militants revealed that four drones that were used to airdrop the weapons were hidden in the border Tarn Taran district. The police are still trying to ascertain whether the recovered drone is among the four, whose presence was revealed by the militants during the interrogation. Earlier, police had recovered a drone, that crashed in the Indian territory and found it fitted with highend technology and GPS. The Indian Army and the Border Security Force have also sounded an all-out alert along the international border after reports of the drones. According to an Intelligence source, China-made drones are capable of carrying a 10 kg payload each, made at least eight sorties this month to drop weapons, counterfeit currency and communications equipment across the heavily-guarded border in once-militant hotbed Punjab, an intelligence official said. Cracking down subsequently, the police this week busted a module of the revived Khalistan Zindabad Force, the Pakistan-backed, Germany-based militant group that was conspiring to unleash a series of terrorist strikes in Punjab and adjoining states, especially Jammu and Kashmir, in Tarn Taran district. A cache of arms was also seized. The teams of SSOC and Counter-Intelligence arrested four terrorists of Khalistan Zindabad Force and seized five AK-47 rifles, magazines, satellite phone and fake currency of Rs 10 lakh from their possession.

Chandigarh (IANS): A passport is a must for devotees from India visiting Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, where Guru Nanak Dev breathed his last, in Pakistan to pay obeisance. However, a visa will not be required. But the visitors need to get them themselves registered online at least a month ahead of their visit. These facts came to light at a high-level review meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh here on Tuesday to assess the progress of the corridor project with a team of officers from the Centre. A $20 service charge will be levied by Pakistan from each visitor on passage through the Kartarpur corridor. A state government functionary, who was present at the meeting, told IANS that Amarinder Singh had suggested any other government document like Aadhaar must be used in place of passports for identification. He said at the meeting the Chief Minister asked the Regional Passport Officer in Chandigarh to ensure a fast-track and accessible mechanism to deliver passport services to pilgrims on top priority. He also asked the Ministry of External Affairs to immediately start organising passport camps across the state to help the devotees. Punjab minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who attended the meeting, told the media on Wednesday that to facilitate pilgrims to apply online regarding their visit to Pakistan via the Kartarpur corridor a website would be launched on October 4. He said special arrangements have also been made for people who don’t have passports. They could apply for passports by paying a fee of Rs 1,500 at convenience centres or post offices near them and the whole process will be completed within one or two days after which they will get their passports. The Chief Minister will lead an all-party delegation across the border to Kartarpur Sahib on the opening day of the Kartarpur Corridor on November 9. The delegation that will accompany the Chief Minister to the historic gurudwara would comprise all the 117 state legislators, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab, Shriomani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) members, as well as members of the Sant Samaj and representatives of each recognised political party in the state. Thereafter, 5,000 pilgrims will be able to visit the gurdwara every day. Construction of the 4.2 km-long corridor is targeted to be completed by October 31, a week before the celebrations to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. The gurudwara is located in Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province. It is near Dera Baba Nanak town in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. It is a highly revered Sikh shrine where Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life and is his final resting place.

Punjab Chief Minister seeks more international flights Chandigarh (IANS): As Punjab gears up for the mega celebration of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday sought more flights to Amritsar from countries with a strong Punjabi population, even as he approved the schedule of activities being organised to mark the historic event. The Chief Minister has written to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri, urging him to prevail upon international airline operators, including Air India, to schedule more special international flights to Amritsar, in order to facilitate ‘Khule Darshan Didar’ during the
Amarinder Singh historic occasion. Amarinder Singh, in his letter, said that more flights from countries like the UK, Canada, the US, Germany, besides Italy, Australia and New Zealand, during the celebrations, would facilitate devotees from across the globe to visit and pay obeisance at Sultanpur Lodhi and Dera Baba
Nanak, amongst other religious places in the state. Pointing to the massive enthusiasm amongst the Punjabi diaspora for the Prakash Purb, to be celebrated on November 12, the Chief Minister said: “We all are blessed to be witnessing this momentous occasion in our lifetimes.” The state and its people were all geared up to celebrate the iconic moment in a befitting manner to commemorate the memory of Guru Nanak Dev, the Chief Minister said, adding that elaborate programmes, as well as infrastructural and development projects dedicated to Guru Sahib’s memory, had been planned for the occasion. Meanwhile, an international
conference on Guru Nanak’s philosophy of peace, harmony and human happiness would be organised on November 7 in Chandigarh. The foundation stone of the National Institute of InterFaith Studies at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar would be laid on November 8, with an Ik-Noor Inter Faith conclave.
The Guru Nanak Dev Ji Utsav at Dera Baba Nanak would also be inaugurated on the same day, followed by a light and sound show, the Guru Nanak Literature Festival, the Guru Nanak Art Festival, the Guru Nanak Kavi Darbar in all Indian languages, the Guru Nanak Theatre Festival and Guru Nanak Film Festival. Amritsar train disaster victims’ kin upset with Sidhu Chandigarh (IANS): Families of victims, mowed down by a train during Dussehra celebrations in Amritsar last year, here on Monday, alleged indifference on the part of Navjot Singh Sidhu, their legislator and former Minister, and criticised him for not keeping the promises made at the time of disaster that claimed 60 lives and injured over 50. Sidhu had promised to provide government jobs to the kin of each victim, to adopt children who had lost their earning parent, and help widows meet life expanses. Sidhu and his wife had gone into hibernation since he quit the government in July, said a 20-year-old college student, who lost his father in the accident. A group of
nearly 30 families went to meet Sidhu and his wife at their residence on Saturday and remind them about their unfulfilled promises. “We were told by their personal staff they were not at home. When we asked them to arrange a meeting with them, they refused to help,” he said. “We staged a sit-in outside Sidhu’s house. Later, at the intervention of the local police, we decided to come again on Monday. Today we went and we were told to come tomorrow (Tuesday),” he said. Naresh Yadav, who lost his son in the accident, said, “I have received financial compensation from the government. But Sidhu and his
wife promised me to help in restarting some semiskilled work. But they seem to be backtracking from their promise,” Yadav said. Sidhu, who had been at loggerheads with Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, formally resigned on July 14. Since then he made public appearance only once and visited his constituency Amritsar (East) to oversee developmental projects briefly. Sidhu, who was active before putting in his papers as Minister on Twitter, made his last post on July 21, announcing, “Have vacated the ministerial bungalow, handed it over to the Punjab government.” A speeding train had run over Dussehra revellers near Amritsar on October 19, 2018.

Punjab ex-chief minister’s family to appeal against releasing his killer Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab’s former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s family said on Tuesday that it would move the Supreme Court against the Centre’s move to commute the death sentence of his killer Balwant Singh Rajoana. The Union Home Ministry has decided to commute Rajoana’s death sentence to life imprisonment. “We are taking a legal opin-
ion on that. Most probably, we will challenge the Centre’s decision on the ground that Rajoana himself had never moved any mercy petition for the commutation of his death sentence,” state legislator and the slain leader’s grandson Gurkirat Kotli said. His assertions came a day after Chief Minister Amarinder Singh clarified that his government had merely sent to the
Union Ministry a list of all longterm TADA prisoners, and had no role in the Centre’s reported decision to release former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s killer or any other particular prisoner. His government had only sent the list of 17 prisoners held under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) in Punjab, as required by the Centre, which had tak-

en an independent decision on the release of the prisoners, the Chief Minister said. He also said the state government was yet to receive the names of the nine prisoners whom the Union Home Ministry had decided to grant special exemption. Amarinder Singh was responding to reporters in Ludhiana on the Congress’ reaction to media reports suggesting that former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s killer was among the eight prisoners that the Centre had decided to release as a humanitarian gesture on the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Beant Singh, who played a crucial role in ending terrorism in Punjab, was assassinated on August 31, 1995. Rajoana was in the list of the 17 submitted by the state government to the Centre as he was a TADA prisoner who had completed more than 14 years in jail, like the other prisoners on the list, he added. The Congress stand on Beant Singh’s killers has always been clear and consistent
Beant Singh Balwant Singh Rajoana that they should serve their full sentence, said Amarinder Singh. He, however, added that he was personally against the death penalty, which he had also said back in 2012. In his personal opinion, all cases of death penalty should be commuted to life imprisonment. Hailing the move, five-time Chief Minister and Akali Dal patron-in-chief Parkash Singh Badal has lauded as “statesmanlike, far-sighted and humane decision of the gov-
ernment of India to release eight Sikh prisoners who had already served their full term and to commute the death sentence of Rajoana into life imprisonment.” Badal said these gestures would go a long way in assuaging the hurt sentiments of the Sikh masses during successive Congress regimes. “Every step that strengthens the hands of the forces of peace and communal harmony and cements HinduSikh unity in Punjab and the country should be welcomed by everyone, overcoming personal factors,” Badal said in a statement on Monday. Wholeheartedly thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for “the strong positive gesture” on the eve of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, Badal said there is a government at the Centre which is friendly to Punjabis and the Sikhs. “As always, it is left to the NDA government to apply the healing touch to the Sikh wounds,” Badal added.

Chandigarh (IANS): Boosting up efforts of the Punjab government to protect the environment, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Tuesday asked the farmers not to burn paddy crop residue in the fields. Acting on the request of the state Agriculture Department, the SGPC said the preservation of clean and green environment is of foremost significance in view of celebrations of the 550th birth anniversary of
Guru Nanak Dev in November. It also instructed all the managers of Sikh shrines that they should ensure strict compliance of directions against stubble burning on the agriculture lands owned by the gurdwaras. The SGPC also stressed the head ‘granthis’ or priests to motivate farmers against stubble burning as this practice causes environmental and health hazard. Earlier, the state had requested the SGPC to issue
an advisory to gurdwaras for ensuring zero stubble burning on lands owned by the shrines besides appealing farmers not to burn crop residue in open fields. The SGPC, considered a mini Parliament of Sikh religious affairs, has control over Sikh religious affairs, manages gurdwaras (Sikh temples) in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, including the holiest of Sikh shrines Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as Golden Temple, in Amritsar.

‘The Sky Is Pink’ very special for Priyanka Chopra
New Delhi (IANS): “The Sky Is Pink” is ready to hit the screens this month. Its actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas found the film very special and saw a connection between her real-life parents and her character in the movie. Director Shonali Bose’s “The Sky Is Pink” is about a couple that lose their daughter to pul-
monary fibrosis, a serious immunity disease. The film has Priyanka and Farhan Akhtar acting as parents of that girl. “This is a very special film based on a special real-life couple who thrive through extraordinary circumstances. I feel like in a cynical world today where we live our own lives, this film shows you what
it can do when you have a family, family support,” Priyanka told IANS here. “I feel like when I read the movie (script), that’s when you know.. jumped out at me so much because my parents were like that. They were extremely supportive and that gave me the ability to be who I am and where I am today,” she added and requested the audience to not leave their brains behind to watch this movie. “You will need your brain and your heart,” she said. The film also stars actor Rohit Saraf. “This talks about love, togetherness and loss. It talks about all these things in a very unique and different perspective. Physical therapy better for low back pain: Study New York (IANS): Patients who first saw a physical therapist for low back pain, rather than a primary care physician (PCP), were much less likely to be prescribed opioids, says a study. “To reduce the risks of short- and long-term opioid use, insurers should incentivise patients to see physical therapists or chiropractors first following a bout of low back pain, before seeing a PCP,” said study lead author Lewis Kazis, Professor at Boston University in the USA. For the research, the team looked at commercial insurance and Medicare Advantage claims data from the OptumLabs database for 216,504 adults who were diagnosed with new-onset low back pain between
2008 and 2013 and had not been prescribed opioids before. For the analysis, the researchers controlled as many socio-demographic, geographical, and medical history factors as they could get from the insurance claims data. According to the study, published in BMJ Open, patients who first saw a PCP for low back pain were 79 per cent more likely to use prescription opioids than patients who first visited a chiropractor and 71 per cent more likely than those who first went to a physical therapist. The researchers also found patients in states with provisional or unrestricted access to physical therapy were much more likely to see a physical therapist first than patients in states with limited physical therapy access.
Coastal living linked with better mental health London (IANS): Living close to the sea could support better mental health in England’s poorest urban communities, a new study suggests. The study, published in the journal Health & Place revealed that living in large towns and cities near to England’s coastline is linked with better mental health for those in the lowest earning households. “Our research suggests, for the first time, that people in poorer households living close to the coast experience fewer symptoms of mental health disorders,” said study lead author Jo Garrett from University of Exeter in the UK “When it comes to mental health, this ‘protective’ zone could play a useful role in helping to level the playing field between those on high and low income,” she said. Researchers used survey data from nearly 26,000 respondents in their analysis, which marks one of the most detailed investigations ever into the wellbeing effects of being beside the sea. The research used data from the Health Survey for England and compared people’s health to their proximity to the coast; from those living less than one km away, to those more than 50 km away. Its findings add to the growing evidence that access to blue spaces - particularly coastal environments - might improve health and wellbeing. Approximately one in six adults in England suffer from mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, and these are far more likely in people from poorer backgrounds. The findings suggest that access to the coast could help to reduce these health inequalities in towns and cities close to the sea.

2019 Buick Encore Review: The Best Selling Buick in Canada! By Autoreviewman The Buick Encore is the luxury brand’s sub -compact Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) that’s the smaller sibling to the larger-sized Buick Enclave CUV. Unlike most Buick vehicles which tend to be large or mid- sized, the Encore is tiny in comparison, but don’t let that fool you. With its as-standard 18inch alloys and a sprinkling of chrome the Encore looks upmarket and classy. It’s mission? To deliver Buick luxury and convenience and creature comforts in the small CUV market that is rapidly expanding. In fact, the subcompact Encore SUV is the bestselling Buick in Canada. There are not many changes for 2019, as the Encore comes off a 2017 facelift. There’s also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard (as well as a 4G LTE WI-Fi hotspot). Safety is high and there is lot of technology on offer. The Encore is available in three trims in Canada: Preferred ($26,400), with such features as keyless opening and push button start. The Sport Touring ($28,400), adds: 18 - inch, midnight silver aluminum wheels: rear integrated roof spoiler, remote vehicle start and fog lights. Stepping up to Essence ($31,700) offers up leather appointed seats, rear ross traffic alert system, heated driver and passenger front seats, and heated leather wrapped steering wheel. There are two engine options. All models come with a standard 1.4-litre EcoTec turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 138
horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic, with no manual gearbox option. The more powerful 1.4-litre EcoTec turbocharged 4-cylinder engine has variable valve timing and direct injection technology, offering 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque and can be ordered as an option for the higher range Sport Touring and Essence models. Front-wheel drive is standard across the range, but all-wheel drive is available on all trims. Options, include such things as: the more powerful 1.4-litre turbocharged engine ($1,030), a power sunroof ($1,150), navigation ($795), premium Bose audio ($685), Twilight paint ($495), and automatic dualzone climate control ($405). .The top “Essence” trim is the bee’s knees with all the options. Buick’s infotainment system is nice and the 8-inch touchscreen is responsive. The Encore cabin offers easy entry and exit, despite its short dimensions. The duel tone leather / cloth seating surfaces feel good to the touch and have a tasteful appearance. Same goes for the leatherwrapped steering wheel
and gear shifter and most of the knobs, switches and buttons on the dash and centre stack. Interior wise the Encore is a stand out with a neat, beautifully executed cabin. The layout is clean, and the look aesthetically pleasing. Occupant and driver room is good upfront, although six footers will be squeezed a bit in the back On the road, the Encore is pleasing enough to drive. The upgraded 1.4-litre turbo really is the engine option to go for, with its better power output and manual mode (+ / -). The Encore is a pleasant vehicle to cruise around in however, thanks to a comfortable, well-sorted ride and a quiet cabin. The latter is due to the presence of Buick QuietTuning technology with Active Noise Cancellation that brings sound insulation features to the table such as triple door seals, acoustic laminated windshield and front side window glass. The Encore offers decent road holding and light, responsive steering. The Encore offers an estimated fuel economy figure of City/ Hwy8.9/7.5 L/100 KM. To sum up, the Encore offers
Voice Clarifying TV Headset
a lot of value here —with it’s excellent as standard features list. It is also priced very well. I can see it appealing to millennials, and those who are loyal Buick fans and maybe looking for a smaller, but taller SUV. With the Encore proving to be a resounding success in North America, watch out for the larger 2020 Encore GX offering more space
and flexibility due next year 2019 Buick Encore: priced

Daughter *** Street Smart!
A nice thing about the Vancouver International Film Festival is that it showcases films from around the world - and some shit right in our own back yard. The streets of Vancouver can sub in for any big city as troubles galore plague a man in
Daughter. Jarring and effective this high stakes
drama shows how excess can lead to downfall. In a tour de force performance John Cassini goes from rags to rich as Jim, a not too nice high level professional whose life torpedoes when a family event proves fatal. Grit is on display everywhere as this lost loner of a loser goes on a pilgrimage seeking young women in all the wrong places. Full of soul and soul-searching this is one film that will leave viewers shaking their heads.
Ranbir Kapoor to reunite on screen with Deepika Padukone; but she’s paired with Ajay Devgn
