1984 anti-Sikh riots: Troubles mount for Kamal Nath New Delhi (IANS): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, who is battling infighting in his Congress party, could face further trouble as a journalist and another person have come forward to depose against him in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, strengthening the case of Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 35-year-old carnage in Delhi and some other places. Kamal Nath was an accused in the case initially, but the court had found no evidence against him. However, the 72-year-old veteran Congress leader and a Gandhi family loyalist, could now face trouble as Londonbased journalist Sanjay Suri and Mukhtiar Singh have expressed readiness to depose in the case. In the light of the new development, the Union Home Ministry has given its nod for reopening the case, as a result of which Kamal Nath will face fresh inquiry for his alleged role in the massacre of Sikhs in the aftermath of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination in New Delhi on October 31, 1984. Suri, who is now based in London told IANS over phone, “I will depose before the SIT whenever asked to do so.” He, however, refused to speak on the issue further. Earlier in the day, addressing a press conference in the national capital, Siromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “In an anti-Sikh riot case registered at Parliament Street Police Station, there are two witnesses, Mukhtiar Singh and Sanjay Suri, who had filed affidavits before the Nanavati Commission regarding the lead role played by Kamal Nath and Sathe during the genocide.” He said they in their affidavits

Kamal Nath had briefed how Kamal Nath directed a mob (a group of Congress leaders) to assassinate Sikhs in the national capital. Sirsa said this case was closed due to a technical glitch and the name of Kamal Nath was deliberately kept out of it.

in the case pertaining to what happened after Indira Gandhi’s assassination. The SIT is likely to consider fresh evidence against the veteran Congress leader, which allegedly mentions that he had instigated a mob near the national capital’s

Sirsa later told IANS, “Suri has said he stands by his statement in the affidavit earlier in the case. He has said Kamal Nath was giving instructions to the mob through his body language.” The SAD leader, who is also the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee President, said that Singh, who is the other witness in the case, is facing a security threat. His remarks came soon after the Union Home Ministry on Monday gave the green light to reopen the case against Kamal Nath and several others, which means the Congress veteran will face fresh inquiry for his alleged involvement

Rakabganj Gurudwara during the 1984 riots. The Narendra Modi government had set up the SIT in 2015 to probe the 1984 riots. Kamal Nath is considered a Gandhi family loyalist. Pressure upon Kamal Nath has been building since last year after the conviction of Sajjan Kumar in the same case by the Delhi High Court. Kumar, after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, was accused of inciting and orchestrating mob violence against the Sikh community across Delhi.

Kamal Nath’s name featured alongside other Congress leaders of the time — Sajjan Kumar, H.K.L. Bhagat and Jagdish Tytler, among others.

Kamal Nath’s name featured alongside other Congress leaders of the time — Sajjan Kumar, H.K.L. Bhagat and Jagdish Tytler, among others. Earlier this year, the Income Tax department also conducted searches at 52 locations in April, including in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, on charges of tax evasion and hawala transactions against close aides of the Chief Minister and others. Kamal Nath’s nephew Ratul Puri was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last month in connection with a bank fraud case and his linkages with the AgustaWestland case. According to Congress leaders, Kamal Nath’s name came on the government radar after the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, Kamal Nath had last year refuted all allegations. “There is no case, FIR, or chargesheet against me. Today they are raking up this matter (1984 anti-Sikh riots). You can understand politics behind this. Did an eyewitness tell you (about his involvement)?” Kamal Nath had said. Meanwhile, Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed the Congress, saying the Nanavati Commission set up by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government had found evidence of systematic killing of Sikhs in 1984. “But between 2005 and 2014, the UPA government did not take any steps to provide justice to the victims. The Modi government took steps that gave justice to victims of the 1984 killings,” Prasad had said. Anti-Sikh riots had erupted in several areas of the national capital in the aftermath of the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. At least 3,000 people were killed in the riots.

India, Pakistan must resolve Kashmir via bilateral talks: UN Chief New Delhi (IANS): In a statement that will be construed as a huge boost for the Narendra Modi government, United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday appealed both India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue via bilateral dialogue. Guterres’ comments thwart Pakistan’s efforts to interna-

tionalise the Kashmir issue, first at the UN Security Council recently, then again at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday. The UN chief met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit last month in Biarritz, France, and has also spoken to Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Antonio Guterres

On September 9, Guterres also met Maleeha Lodhi, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, after a request came from her for a meeting. “His message to all of them has been the same, both publicly and privately, that he remains very concerned about any potential escalation between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir situation.

He appeals to both sides to deal with the issue through dialogue,” said UN chief ’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. He further added, “You know, our position on mediation has, as a matter of principle, always remained the same.” India’s stated policy has been that the Kashmir issue is an internal matter and there is

no need for a third-party mediation. The UN chief ’s appeal for dialogue between the two countries to solve the contentious Kashmir issue only emboldens India’s stand, even as Pakistan is trying to raise the matter at the 42nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.

‘India’s moon mission, wake-up call for Pakistan’ Islamabad (IANS): Eminent Pakistani scientist and former minister for science and technology Atta-ur-Rehman has said that India’s moon mission was a wake-up call for Pakistan, which requires to follow suit. Speaking to a Pakistan TV channel here, Rehman said, “The Indian moon mission cannot be termed a failure, as such tests by even big and technologically advanced countries also fail. He said failures and successes are part of such missions but those who stick to them succeed at last.” “Half of such missions undertaken by even the most advanced and developed countries have failed and only half succeeded,” Rehman added. Rehman said the impression that such missions involve a lot of money is not the right approach, as such endeavours also have their impact on defence and industries.

“India is doing the right job and we should follow it to reach the Moon and the Mars,” said Rahman. Rehman went on to say that the attempt to reach the Moon should not be driven by ego, to be on an equal footing with India, but pursuing such missions will improve many technologies which will strengthen Pakistan’s defence and industries. MEANWHILE, reports say the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) retrieved images and located the lander Vikram on the moon on September 8 and was analysing them to find out about the lander’s condition. At 1.45 a.m. on September 7, 12 minutes into its descent onto the lunar surface, the lander lost contact with earth. According to the reports, the main Chan-

ON Tuesday, the Indian space agency reiterated that its moon lander Vikram has been located by the Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter. “#VikramLander has been located by the orbiter of #Chandrayaan2, but no communication with it yet,” the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) tweeted. “All possible efforts are being made to establish communication with lander,” ISRO said. The ISRO did not, however, say in what condition the lander is on the lunar surface. The space agency continues to remain silent as to the cause for the moon lander tumbling and deviating from its original flight path on September 7 early morning.

BJP leader raped me for over a year, alleges law student Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh) (IANS): The law postgraduate student, who had levelled charges of sexual harassment against former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand, on Monday alleged that she was raped and exploited for over a year by the BJP leader. Addressing the press here, the woman, who was studying at a law college where Chinmayanand was the director, claimed that he exploited many more girls like

her, but only she had courage to come ahead and file a complaint. “Swami Chinmayanand raped me and even exploited me physically for one year,” she alleged before the media, her face covered with a black scarf. “I have every evidence of the crime... go and open my hostel room,” she added. She also alleged that the Uttar Pradesh Police had refused to file her FIR and hence, she decided to file an

complaint in Delhi. “The Delhi Police has registered this complaint at

the Lodhi Road police station and has forwarded it to Shahjahanpur police,” she said. The woman also accused the local District Magistrate of trying to threaten her parents for complaining against Chinmayanand, a three-time MP. “Here I was running for my life, and the DM of Shahjahanpur threatened my father that you must see against whom you are filing a complaint,” the girl said.

NEW

The Supreme Court heard the woman’s account in a closed hearing and ordered the UP government to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to inquire into her allegations. It had also directed that she and her brother who was doing his LLB at the same college here - should be transferred to another institution. “On Sunday, the SIT quizzed me for about 11 hours. I have told them about the rapes. Even after I told them every-

thing, they haven’t arrested Chinmayanand yet,” she said. The woman was tracked down in Rajasthan on August 30, a week after she vanished following her Facebook post alleging that a “big leader of the Sant Samaj” had “destroyed the lives of many other girls and also has threatened to kill me”. In the post, she had requested Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help her.

Rahul, Priyanka take dig at Modi on 100 days in office; government avoids mention of economy New Delhi (IANS): Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday took a dig at the economic performance of the Modi government after the completion of 100 days in office. Rahul in a sarcastic way first congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for completing 100 days and then launched a scathing attack on Modi for the economic slowdown the country is facing today. In a tweet, Rahul Gandhi said: “Congratulations to the Modi Govt on #100DaysNoVikas, the continued subversion of democracy, a firmer stranglehold on a submissive media to drown out criticism and a glaring lack of leadership, direction & plans where it’s needed the most – to turnaround our ravaged economy.” Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi also attacked Modi government

‘BJP should have one nation, one rule policy on beef’ Panaji, Goa (IANS): The Congress in Goa on Tuesday asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to follow its ‘one nation, one rule’ norm, when it comes to the sale of beef in the country. Speaking to IANS on Tuesday, state Congress President Girish Chodankar accused the BJP of trying to rake up the beef ban issue, only when it deems politically beneficial for the party. “For everything the BJP says, ‘one nation, one rule’ or ‘one nation, one election’. Why not one policy on beef? Let them go talk about banning beef in the northeast or in Kerala. Why are they doing it selectively? Is it to target certain communities?” Chodan-

kar asked. The state Congress President’s comments comes a day after Union Minister for Coal and Mines and Karnataka BJP MP Pralhad Joshi said that the party would decide on imposing a ban on sale and possession of beef depending on the “emotions” and “feelings’ of the people of Karnataka, during a media interaction in Goa. “They are selectively trying to use the beef issue, where it is advantageous to them, to polarise communities. Where it is disadvantageous, they will just leave it like in Goa, Kerala and the northeast. So they are doing very selectively and they are only trying to divide this country,” Chodankar added.

The “Perfect Calcium” to prevent weak bones

LEONARDO Da Vinci, (often called the “Universal Genius), remarked over 500 years ago that, “Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle.” It’s a phrase often repeated when teaching young surgeons. Now, there’s a “Perfect Calcium”, an Icelandic natural remedy that helps to keep bones strong. Studies show that one in four women and one in eight men over age 50 suffer from osteoporosis (brittle bones). So due to an aging population, we can expect more hip, spinal, and other bone fractures in the future. What about the use of calcium supplements? The point is that not all calcium products are the same. Most use calcium mined from limestone, a sedimentary rock. After processing this material, it contains only one mineral, calcium. But one particular product, Aquamin, is a whole food source of calcium that’s not mined from limestone. Rather, it’s obtained from a red-algae plant, Lithothamnion calcareum, that grows off the clean, cold waters of Iceland. It’s harvested by permission of the Icelandic government with strict control standards and quotas. This natural remedy contains 73 minerals including calcium and magnesium that are essential to bone health. Studies show that Aquamin decreases the activ-

ity of osteocytes that absorb bone, and increases activity of osteoblasts that build up bone. Aquamin works well with vitamin K2 that directs calcium into bone, rather than arteries. Equally vital, added vitamin D helps to absorb calcium from the gastrointestinal tract. Professor Bischoff-Ferrari at the University Hospital in Zurick, Switzerland, is a world authority on calcium. Several years ago, Dr. Bischoll-Ferrari reported that calcium supplements, without vitamin D, may cause a 64 percent increase in hip fractures! She explains, “it’s because bone is not just calcium and does not function in isolation.” Researchers in recent calcium studies stress that it’s advisable to get calcium from food sources since they’re better absorbed. Moreover, natural sources such as food and plant-based Aquamin are also more slowly absorbed, so there is no sudden harmful spike in blood calcium.

Aquamin is another example of what I have been arguing for many years. That nature and natural remedies are hard to beat. They make total sense. After all, nature has been working for eons and eons to produce the right amount of calcium, magnesium and other minerals needed by the body. We also know that it must be a delicate balance, as too much or too little of one, can cause serious problems. I acknowledge that some synthetic manmade products are needed for some health problems. Harsimrat’s claims on Akal Takht irresponsible: Punjab Chief Minister Chandigarh (IANS): Terming her remarks as “totally irresponsible and provocative”, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday lashed out at Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal over her allegations that his government was trying to undermine the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. No true Sikh can ever think of

showing disrespect to the prestige of the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, he said, hitting out at the Akali Dal leader for “trying to demean the authority of Sri Akal Takht with her reckless remarks”. Amarinder Singh termed Harsimrat Kaur “the most ill-informed woman he had ever come across”, and with

Sultanpur Lodhi (IANS): In a significant decision aimed at encouraging industries to shift to the eco-friendly gas, the council of ministers on Tuesday decided to cut down VAT on natural gas, in gaseous state other than compressed natural

gas, from 14.3 to 3.3 per cent. Chairing the cabinet meeting in this historical town, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said the move would help cut down industrial pollution. At present, the rate of valueadded tax (VAT) on natural gas

“the habit of making irrational statements without knowing the facts”. Talking to media persons in Sultanpur Lodhi town after a review of the progress of the works undertaken to mark the 550th Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev, he said not only was his government fully committed to celebrating the

historic occasion in a befitting manner but it was also totally open to accepting the proposal of Sri Akal Takht to constitute a joint commemoration committee. As per the proposal, two members each from the government, the SGPC and a Sikh scholar - being a neutral member - would be drawn into the

committee to evolve a broad consensus on this issue. The Chief Minister also lambasted Harsimrat Kaur for her remark that Punjab did not require any agricultural project, wondering how she worked in Delhi without any sense of the ground reality. “How can she ever claim that Punjab, an agrarian state, does

not need an agricultural project,” he asked. In response to a query, the Chief Minister said that religion was always supreme - not politics. He reiterated his appeal to all to cut across party lines to jointly celebrate the historic event and to refrain from interfering in religious affairs.

Punjab cuts VAT on natural gas is 13 per cent plus 10 per cent surcharge, that is, 14.30 per cent in the state. The major consumer of gas is National Fertilisers Ltd (NFL), which uses the gas at its plants at Bathinda and Nangal. The natural gas is also con-

sumed in very small quantity by select industries and the transport sector. Before March 2015, VAT rate on natural gas was 5.5 per cent plus 10 per cent surcharge i.e. 6.05 per cent. From March 2015 onwards,

VAT rate on natural gas was increased from 6.05 to 14.3 per cent. Due to increase in VAT rate, NFL started interstate billing of natural gas due to which VAT collection on natural gas decreased. The VAT collection

on natural gas from 2014-15 to 2018-19 came down considerably -- from Rs 105.77 crore to Rs 5.67 crore [1 crore = 10 million], which had further shown a steep decline to Rs 1.84 crore till June 2019, during financial year 2019-20.

Parliament to mark the historic occasion. The Parliament session should be addressed by the President, with prominent Sikh personalities to be invited for participation, it added. The cabinet also resolved to take up with the External Affairs Minister the matter of allowing visa-free entry to the devotees intending to visit Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan, without any entry fee, facilitation charges and service charges. This would help them in ‘khula darshan’, enabling them to pay obeisance without any restriction in accordance with the prayer of Sikh Sangat. The Chief Minister promised to personally call on the External Affairs Minister, and urge him to prevail upon his counterpart in Pakistan to ensure visa-free entry to its territory. The Chief Minister also decided to convene the next meeting of his cabinet at Sultanpur Lodhi on October 10 to review the further

progress of the ongoing infrastructure and development projects in the historic city. On a personal request from Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, the Chief Minister agreed to convene a special meeting at Dera Baba Nanak before September 30 to review the status of various development projects being executed in the area. The special meeting of the cabinet, convened here on Tuesday to review the progress of various ongoing projects in the historic city of Sultanpur Lodhi, also cleared a proposal for declaring Sultanpur Lodhi-Kapurthala-Kartarpur-Beas-Batala-Dera Baba Nanak as Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Marg. It was decided to upgrade the 136.14 km long road, and widen it to 10 meters at a cost of Rs 96.15 crore. Conceding a request from Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Navtej Singh Cheema, the cabinet okayed a proposal to upgrade the local Civil Hospital to a super specialty

institution, and also sanctioned Rs 1.24 crore for the construction of a km-long stretch new road from Gurdwara Sant Ghat to connect with the KapurthalaSultanpur Lodhi road. The Chief Minister directed the executing agencies to complete all the development works within the stipulated timeframe and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Kapurthala to regularly hold meetings of all officers concerned to meet the deadline. Amarinder also asked the state Chief Secretary and DGP to take stock of the ongoing development and traffic management projects on a regular basis. The Chief Minister directed the Chairman PSPCL and Secretary Water Supply and Sanitation to find ways and means for exempting the free langars from electricity and water charges. Captain Amarinder Singh asked the Cultural Affairs Minister to set up a committee for honouring 550 Sikhs/Nanak Naam Leva Personalities on the occasion.

What treatment can I claim from ICBC? BY ADAM UELAND

IF an individual is injured in a motor vehicle accident, they are entitled to claim treatment from ICBC under a Part 7 claim. A Part 7 claim is a way for the injured individual to be paid the following reasonable expenses as benefits: necessary health care ser-

vices, occupational therapy, dental services, hospital services, ambulance services, professional nursing services, speech therapy, medication, prostheses and orthoses. Under Schedule 3.1 of the Insurance (Vehicle) Regulation, health care services are defined to include acupuncture, chiropractic sessions, counselling, kinesiology, massage

therapy, physiotherapy and psychology. Can you claim treatment from ICBC for cosmetic treatments? Cosmetic treatments, such as laser therapy and Botox, are not directly addressed anywhere under Part 7 of the Insurance (Vehicle) Regulation. This leads to the conclusion that since such treatments are not included

Hans Raj Hans asks Javadekar to ban ‘Ram Siya ...’ New Delhi (IANS): Singerturned-politician Hans Raj Hans has asked Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar to impose a ban on the telecast of the television series “Ram Siya Ke Luv Kush” for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of the Valmiki community. In a letter to Javadekar, Hans Raj mentioned that last Saturday, the Valmiki community had staged a protest in Punjab during which a youth was shot at but was later operated upon. “I came to know that they are planning for Bharat Bandh along with the Ravidas community. This may seriously affect the religious harmony of our society. Nobody should be allowed to hurt the religious sentiments of any community,” the BJP MP from North West Delhi wrote in the letter. “I am of the view that orders should be immediately issued to ban the serial and ensure its strict implemen-

tation. Any responsible producer should refrain from producing or launching such a programme or serial, and it should be ensured that the serial is not telecast in Bharat,” he added. Earlier this week, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had refused to stay the ban on the telecast of the serial imposed by the state of Punjab. During a special hearing on a petition filed by Colors TV, Justice T.S. Dhindsa declined to grant stay on the order passed by various District Commissioners in their capacity as District Magistrates. Arguing the case, Additional Advocate General Rameeza Hakeem said the decision to ban the telecast of the serial had been taken on the ground that Rishi Valmiki had been portrayed in a negative light, hurting the sentiments of the Valmiki community in Punjab. During the hearing, Colors TV contended that the ban

order was passed without adhering to the principles of natural justice, and without the ingredients of Section 19 of the Cable Operators Regulation Act. The channel also placed on record an offer from the producers of the serial to enter a dialogue with the Home Secretary to discuss the contentious scenes. They offered to delete the scenes that portrayed Valmiki in objectionable light. The court called upon the Additional Advocate General to take instructions in the matter, especially on the offer made by the producers to delete the objectionable scenes. Hakeem later said the offer would be considered by the Punjab government, whose response would be submitted before the court on the next date of hearing. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had ordered the Deputy Commissioners to ban the telecast of “Ram Siya Ke Luv Kush”.

Hustlers (PG) **** Street Smart!

Female ingenuity and girl power is on full display in Hustlers. Trend-setting comedy kingpin STX Studios teams up with new James Bond distributor Annapura Pictures to pull off a dazzling adaptation of a hit New York magazine article that took the world of high society by storm. Get in on All the “action “ at Cineplex Cinemas and Landmark Theatres throughout B.C. thanks to a Elevation Pictures. Diversions and afternoon ( or any time ) delights are a force of habit for most men and women. Equal opportunities arise when a group of enterprising young women decide to strike out on their own. With a story line somewhat reminiscent of crowd-pleasing Molly’s Game all you have to do is substitute stripping for gambling and you have the recipe for success on and off screen Men and women will equally enjoy the entrepreneurial skills and drive of a small group of determined strippers working the New

York circuit who decide to strike out on Their own. Led by veteran leading lady Ramona and novice performer Destiny both Jennifer Lopez (Selena) and breakout star Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians) sparkle and shine in this true to life tale of struggle and survival. Inside the dark world of strip clubs we go. Director Lorene Scafaria brings a welcome female perspective to this tale of two women from opposite sides of the tracks and different cultures who become friends and then engage in a delightful man trap designed to profit them immensely. Superior to earlier films about dancing like Striptease this 109 minute movie effectively tackles the nature of the business with glamour

and pizazz. Boys will be boys and you become fully engaged in how these men enjoy this fabled culture and see how some enterprising women take advantage of the situation. Apart from all the teasing and t and a and male baiting at the heart of Hustlers is a tale of family and the up and down relationship of two women sharing similar tastes in the good life but miles apart in how they relate to their fellow human beings. Smart, sassy, sexy, relevant and endearing Hustlers boasts commendable performances with actors who wear their hears on their sleeves. Even some humor works well in this high octane well fleshed out drama.

By Autoreviewman The new Jeep Gladiator pickup is based on the iconic Wrangler, It’s unmistakably a Jeep, with the company’s trademark seven-slot grille, and retro, straight edged, military styling. But the Gladiator is significantly larger than the Wrangler four-door. It retains its traditional body-on-frame architecture, and rides on a 29-inch longer wheelbase, and is a massive 31 inches longer overall thanks to the 5 - feet pickup bed. Also carrying over from Wrangler are features such as: fully removable doors, fold down the windscreen, and three removable roof options, which makes the Gladiator the only open-air mid-size pickup truck available today. The rear suspension is different, too, with bigger control arms and a track bar taken from the Ram 1500 pickup truck. The axles are also beefed up to handle the extra weight of the Gladiator along with other reinforcements. Engine wise, there is a tried and trusted 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 carried over from Wrangler, producing a respectable 285 horsepower and 260 pounds-feet of torque, with either a sixspeed manual or an eightspeed automatic transmission. All Gladiators come

standard with a two-speed four-wheel drive system like the Wrangler. In Canada, the Gladiator is available in three trims: Sport S, ($46495), Overland, ($50,995), and Rubicon ($53,995). The Gladiator with the Rubicon trim, as tested provides excellent, legendary off-road performance- the Rubicon spec includes: Rock-Trac heavy duty 4x4 system, Off-Road plus mode, performance dampers, cab and bed rock rails, a forward view camera, uConnect with Off Road Pages data displays, a sway bar disconnect which allows more suspension travel, lower crawl ratio capability, Tru Lock front and rear axles with locking differentials, front skid plates, tow hooks, a unique vented hood, and standard 33-inch Falken off-road tires. Full customization and upgrading is available from MOPAR with Jeep tonneau cover, bedliner, secure inbed storage systems, as well as cargo carrying options such as bicycle and kayaks racks., The pickup bed is just not an after- thought, its fully functional with a three position tailgate that is damped for controlled lowering. The bed features, multiple tie downs, for cargo lashing as well as light-

ing, and an optional 115-volt power port. Cargo and Towing capability is excellent with the Gladiator’s maximum 725 kilogram (1,600 pounds) payload capacity and a maximum tow rating of 3,400 kilograms (7,650 pounds). . Cool fact- the Gladiators transmission automatically detects the presence of a trailer, and so you don’t need to fiddle with configuration. Inside, the Gladiator’s front cabin is identical to Wrangler with the unique Jeep styling and endearing details. But it is not all looks, with good ergonomics, and comfortable seats. Jeep’s corporate FCA’s Uconnect infotainment interface is excellent as usual- intuitive, easy and quick to respond. Premium automakers take note here please! Back seat passengers will also be comfy thanks to the extra eight cm of legroom. The second row seats fold up and out of the way, creating extra load carrying ability. There is optional, secure under seat along with a cool wireless speaker for the Gladiator’s sound system. On the road, the V6 engine offers impressive torque, and handles the Gladiators weight with ease. The CONTINUED ON 19

New flagship sedan is impressive By Auto reviewman Volkswagen’s new flagship four-door Arteon is a new offering that offers a tempting path to the entry -level luxury segment class. And, it looks like Volkswagen may have a winner on their hands. The Arteon is a handsome, stylish sedan in the traditional three-box format. It’s a tad groovier that the conservative Passat with its sleek front end sculpted haunches. The Arteon is based on Volkswagen’s versatile transverse MQB architecture that underpins such other VW models. The only available powertrain for the now is f Volkswagen’s corporate 2.0L TSI turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. It puts out 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. The sole transmission is an eight-speed automatic with Tiptronic, Volkswagen’s excellent 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system is as standard equipment for Canadian models. Pricing for the 2019 Arteon starts at $47,995 in Canada, with two available packages. A $2,095 Driver Assistance Package which adds lane assist, park assist, and a 360-degree view camera system. A $2,995 R-Line Package comprising: 20” wheels, exterior design accents, an R-Line steering wheel with paddle shifters, and upgraded unique interior trim. A fully loaded Arteon comes in at a shade over $53,000. We tested a sleek looking Chilli Red Execline model with a delightful interior trim made up of light grey and dark

grey with light accent stitching. Options on our

tester included the Driver Assistance package ($2,095) and the R-Line package ($2,995). For a total cost of $53m085 including PDI. Highlights on our tester included: 18 inch Almera wheels with Adamantium dark finish, and a Panorama sunroof. The R-Line package featured: Aluminum door sills with the R –Line logo, R - Line exterior design package and R –Line heated leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters The Arteon interior is accessed by big doors front and rear allowing easy ingress and exit. There is a rather nicely appointed cabin with a cool “Dayton” brushed aluminum trim interior on the dash and doors. Opt for the Nappa leather and it’s a sumptuous luxury look. The instrument gauge cluster takes on elements of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, with digital instrumentation, while an eightinch touchscreen takes care of the infotainment.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is present, along with Volkswagen’s proprietary apps. The driver’s seat is very comfortable with 12 way adjust for the driver, 4 way lumber support function, and a neat massaging system. There is three-zone climate control, a 700W Dynaudio sound system, with Sirius XM, and satellite navigation and an analog clock up front. Technology and safety wise, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian monitoring, and dynamic headlights are also all standard issue. The optional Driver Assistance package adds: Area View 360 parking, Lane Assist Guidance and Park Assist. The rear cabin is also nicely outfitted, with a roomy, adult friendly seats that fold 60/40 and feature a center armrest and pass through. Ambient interior lighting, with footwell lights also rounds off a pleasant airy interior In terms of driving dynamics, the Arteon is helped by features such as Volkswagen’s Dynamic Chassis Control, which adjusts the damping and suspension for either “Sport”, “Comfort”, and “Normal” modes. There is smidge of turbo lag on standing acceleration, evened out by a smooth surge of torque low down in the tach that makes itself evident. The Arteon comes up to speed very well and the eight-speed automatic with the Tiptronic function is a smooth unobtrusive unit. The Arteon is fairly quick and the transverse MQB architecture offers a rigid

platform. However, don’t expect the delightful sporty drive of the Golf GTI! The big Arteon drives like a premium sedan- with its direct steering and serene cornering. No drama here. Traction is good with a safe, confident feel thanks to the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. Nothing much to complain about. The Arteon does have its work cut out against the competitions as an alternative premium sedan. It may not be as fast or sporty as some its rivals, but in its favour has a more comfortable, less jarring ride and precise faithful Volkswagen road manners. It compares favourably with entry level BMW 3-series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. It is also priced very well. A very well executed premium sedan that is worth test driving. 2019 Volkswagen Artegon priced from $47,995. More info at www.vw.ca

2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon CONTINUED FROM 16 longer wheelbase means bumps and rough roads are evened out, and the Jeep Gladiator offers a smoother ride and more comfort with good composure. It is very much like driving a Wrangler, but feels more stable, probably due to the wider track and beefed up suspension hardware. Road noise levels are similar, along with the steering feel, but with less play and more direct feel. The brakes are also better in the Gladiator compared to the Wrangler. As usual Jeep’s always outperform anything off-road,

and the Gladiator is no exception. It just thrives in the boonies with its big, grippy tires and jacked suspension. The superior Rubicon trim upgrade with its pro-grade off-road hardware means the Gladiator is untouchable

when it comes to tacking rough trials, rocks bashing, mud bathing, water fording and crawl speed ascending and descending. It is the ultimate factory off-roader! Not much to complain about, the Jeep is not par-

ticular fuel frugal, but that’s not what buyers will want a Gladiator for, However there is a more economical 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 next year, offering more than 260 horsepower and an impressive 442 lb.-ft. of torque for extra towing capacity. To sum up, the Rubicon version of the Gladiator is expensive, but you do gain serious off-road bragging rights, with a unique looking pickup that will have everyone drooling with envy! A wonderful, fun to own offroader that is superb in so many ways. Highly recommended!
