Modi targets Pakistan over terror, Kashmir with Trump listening Houston (IANS) : With US President Donald Trump listening keenly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India had bid “farewell” to Article 370 that went against peoplecentric development in Jammu and Kashmir and attacked Pakistan for making hatred towards India the hub of its governance and for fostering terrorism. Ahead of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s meeting with President Trump, Modi said that India’s neighbour is the breeding ground of terrorism, from 9/11 attacks in the US and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the entire world is aware about the source of the terror. “What India has done (revoking Article 370), there are some people who have trouble over it, they are themselves unable to even take care of their own country,” he said, targeting Pakistan that has been attacking India over revocation of special status to Kashmir. “They have made hatred towards India the centerpiece of their governance. They want ‘ashanti’ (disturbance). ‘Woh atank to paltey hain, postey hain’ (they are the breeding ground of terror), the whole world knows them, 9/11 or 26/11 Mumbai attacks. “The time has come for a definite fight against terrorism. I want to state with emphasis that in this fight President Trump is with us strongly in the fight against terrorism, and he has shown his determination to fight against terrorism,” Modi said, and asked the audience to stand up and give a standing ovation to the US President. The entire audience of 50,000 stood up and applauded in unison. Raising the issue of the

Modi and Trump take in the adulation of the audience. revocation of Article 370, with Pakistan set to raise it in the UN General Assembly, Modi said that for the past 70 years it was proving to be a hamper to development. “For 70 years, it was proving a big challenge that India has given a farewell to. It kept people away from the benefits of development, and from equality, and it was being used by separatists. And the Constitution that is for the rest of India is now also for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. All the discrimination that women, children and Dalits were facing, has been ended.” Modi said the legislation for the purpose was passed with twothirds majority in both houses of Parliament, including the upper house where his government did not have majority, and the proceedings were telecast. He asked the entire cheering audience to give a standing ovation to the Parliament for its move. “I want all of you to give a standing ovation for this,” he said and the 50,000 crowd of Indian-Americans

stood up, cheering and chanting “Modi, Modi”, as the US President and a host of US Congressmen watched. Trump said that the US and India are forging an “even stronger security partnership”, with both sides set to conclude “several new defence deals very soon”. Trump said: “US defence sales to India have reached $18 billion in the past decade. “We are looking forward to concluding several new defence deals very soon. There are lot of them in the works.” He also said both sides are working together in space cooperation. “We are creating the US Space Force and working closely with India to join hands in space cooperation. In November the US and India will demonstrate progress of our defence relationship, holding the first ever tri-service military exercise called Tiger Triumph. It’s a good name, very good name,” said Trump. On trade relations, he said both sides are working to make their

nations “even more prosperous than ever before”. “The economic miracles are taking place... Indian companies are supplying tens of thousands of jobs across a range of industries. In 2018 JSW Steel announced it would invest $500 million to revitalize a shuttered steel plant.” “We welcome India’s role in investment in our lone star state,” he said, referring to Texas. Referring to Indian investment in the US, he said: “India has never invested in the US like it is doing today. And I want to say it’s reciprocal, because we are doing the same thing in India.” Trump said the US is working to expand American exports to India, one of the fastest growing markets. On oil and gas exports to India, he said that crude exports have grown by 400 percent and LNG continues to “soar at record numbers”. Trump announced that India will have access to another world class product - NBA basketball next week. “And very soon India will have access to another world class American product, NBA basketball. Wow that sounds good.” “Next week thousands of people will gather in Mumbai to watch the first ever NBA basketball game in India,” he said at the NRG Stadium during the Howdy Modi event before a 50,000 strong Indian American crowd. He then smilingly asked, “Am I invited Mr PM. Ha ha. I may come, be careful, I may come,” he said, in a jovial manner. The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced in December 2018 that the Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings will play in two preseason games on October 4 and 5 in Mumbai.

Told India, Pakistan leaders to ‘just work it out’: Trump

New York (IANS): US President Donald Trump said he had discussed Kashmir with the leaders of both India and Pakistan and offered mediation or arbitration, and urged them to “just work it out, just work it out”. In a press conference after addressing the UN General Assembly here, Trump said he had held “very productive conversations with the leaders of Pakistan, India and many other countries” on achieving stron-

ger ties and on fair reciprocal trade. “With respect to Pakistan and India, we talked about Kashmir, and whatever help I can be, I said, I offered, whether it’s arbitration, or mediation, or whatever it has to be. I’ll do whatever I can do, because they are at very serious odds right not, and hopefully that’ll get better. “If you look at the two gentleImran Khan and Donald Trump.

men, heading those two countries, very good friends of mine. I said fellows just work it out, just work it out; because they are two nuclear countries, they’ve gotta work it out.” Trump had held bilateral meetings with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday and with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He had also shared the stage with Modi at the Howdy Modi

event in Houston on Sunday. Ahead of his bilateral meeting with Modi, Trump had said that Modi is perfectly capable of handling Pakistan-sponsored terror, and urged both sides to sit down and talk. A readout of the meeting between Trump and Modi also said that the US president had “encouraged” Modi to improve relations with Islamabad and also “fulfil his promises” to better the lives of the Kashmiri people.

Imran Khan meets editorial board of New York Times New York (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday met the editorial board of New York Times and reiterated his demand that the international community should play a role for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. During the meeting, Imran Khan apprised the editorial board of “Indian atrocities” in the Kashmir, and said the Indian actions have “put the peace of the region at stake”. He said there is a “fear of bloodshed in occupied Kashmir and to prevent this situation, the international community must take immediate action”. The NYT has been writing piec-

es sympathetic to the Pakistani stand on Kashmir. Imran had also written an opinion piece in the paper late last month urging the international community to “think beyond trade and business advantages” and warned of a looming threat of nuclear war due to “appeasement” of India. In a piece titled “The World Can’t Ignore Kashmir. We Are All in Danger”, Khan says that “if the world does nothing to stop the Indian assault on Kashmir and its people, two nuclear-armed states will get ever closer to a direct military confrontation”. Separately, while addressing

the delegation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on the sidelines of the UNGA, Imran wondered how the world community would have reacted if eight million Europeans or Jews were put under siege, and said he was “disappointed” with the lack of response from the international community over Kashmir. “(I am) disappointed by the international community. If eight million Europeans or Jews or even eight Americans were put under siege, would the reaction have been the same? There’s no pressure yet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi

to lift the siege. We’ll keep putting the pressure... What are 900,000 troops doing there? Once the curfew is lifted, god knows what is going to happen after that,” Imran stated. “Modi has been committing terrorism in occupied Kashmir where children, elders among other people have been besieged from the last 52 days [a] all communication services are shut down,” he went on to say, adding that freedom fighters have been termed as “terror-

triple talaq under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) and said such women should be given rights over Waqf properties. He also called for several welfare measures that should be undertaken for their rehabilitation. Around 300 women from across the state attended the event.

The Chief Minister said: “Educated women should be absorbed in government jobs as per their qualifications while arrangements should also be made for providing them shelter and education under various schemes. These women should be covered under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana or the Chief Minister Arogya Scheme.”

Christians were not safe and they were being treated as inferior citizens. The event was also attended by foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Responding to why Pakistan’s narrative on Kashmir is being overlooked, he said: “The reason is India, people look upon India as a market of 1.2 billion people... Some are appalled by it but by the end of it, they think of it as a market,” he said.

The rule of law could end mass shootings

CAMPAIGNING politicians in Canada and the U.S. are arguing for stricter gun laws to address the epidemic of gun deaths. I predict they will fail. Why? Because politicians consistently demonstrate they have not read history or studied psychology. Furthermore, it’s been my experience they do not have the intestinal fortitude to pass justifiable, tough-on-crime laws. I believe this issue is no longer just an issue of security, crime and punishment. Due to all its ramifications for our bodily, mental and societal well-being, I believe it has become a health issue. California has the most restrictive gun laws in the U.S., but they are clearly not tough enough. California suffers the most mass shootings in the country. When penalties are not severe, these laws have no effect on human psychology, and shootings continue. Aristotle, the philosopher, preached 2,000 years ago that punishment is a form of medicine. Jesus Christ agreed that bad deeds deserve censure. During a visit to Singapore, I learned how Lee Kwan Yew, the former Prime Minister of Singapore, approached the psychology of criminal behaviour. His mantra for crime and gun control was, “Don’t show your teeth if you’re not prepared to bite.” Guns are strictly controlled in Singapore and anyone caught with one will be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison and six painful canings. In addition, anyone using a gun in committing

an offence faces a mandatory death sentence. Accomplices face the same punishment. Sentences are carried out quickly. This sends a powerful message. One reader, who lived in Singapore, sent this information to me. He said people were informed by the government that anyone caught using illegal drugs would be shot. The first offender who did not take notice and was caught had one finger shot off. He was told the next time it would be his head. This reader then informed me the use of illegal drugs quickly became past history! Politicians who believe capital punishment does not deter crime should go to Singapore and see for themselves. Even before travelers disembark from the plane or leave the airport, multiple messages reinforce the law, “Death penalty for drug traffickers.” People get the message. Gun crimes are extremely rare in Singapore. If North America had similar tough punishments, it would not take long for gun offenders to feel the bite of the law. It’s hard to comprehend the emotional suffering caused by mass shootings. It’s beyond tragic when innocent bystanders fall victim to gun violence. If you live in a drug- and gun-infested neighbourhood, you live in fear that your child may be shot. Capital punishment is not available in Canada and some states in the U.S. because human rights groups argue it should never be a part of a civilized society. But we do not exist in a civilized country when we allow evil people to kill innocent members of society and do little about it. So I beg to differ, and so would Aristotle and Lee Kwan Yew. There are evil people in this world and no amount of social workers, dogooders, or laws on gun ownership will reform these people and end needless deaths. I realize that the likelihood of weak-kneed politicians bringing back capital punishment is close to zero. I say this from experience. As evidence, next week I’ll be reporting a personal medical situation in which the entire federal Parliament of Canada should be sent packing due to its irresponsible behaviour and lack of human empathy. But what do readers think? Are Aristotle and Lee Kwan Yew right? That current gun laws

Regarding the tented city being put up at Dera Baba Nanak, the Chief Minister directed the Principal Secretary (tourism) to ensure complete coordination between all the depart-

flights from Tehran to Amritsar for facilitating Sikh pilgrims expected to visit during the historic occasion. Highlighting the role of the Sikh community in strengthening the Iranian economy, the Chief Minister stressed the need to take people-topeople relations forward. He asked the state Chief Secretary to initiate student exchange programmes between universities in Punjab and Iran, while also suggesting promotion of businessto-business interactions. The quantum of exports from Punjab of premium quality rice, fruits and dry fruits to Iran could be further increased, the Chief Minister said, noting that Iranian urea was among the major import items for the state.

The Chief Minister assured the visiting envoy that the state government would provide all possible support and cooperation to the Iranian investors who wish to set up their industrial units in the state. Nostalgically recalling his only visit to Iran in 1976, when he had led a delegation of the state Agriculture Ministry which he was heading, Amarinder Singh termed his two-month stay as a learning experience. The Ambassador invited the Chief Minister to visit Iran again soon. Acceding to a suggestion from Amarinder Singh, the envoy, who is attending an event in Patiala on Wednesday, also decided to visit the Samana shrine in the city.

China-made drones used to drop weapons in Punjab, claims intelligence official Chandigarh (IANS): Chinamade drones, capable of carrying a 10 kg payload each, made at least eight sorties this month to drop weapons, counterfeit currency and communications equipment across the heavilyguarded international border in once-militant hotbed Punjab, an intelligence official said on Wednesday. The weapons belonged to Pakistan-based Khalistani terror groups. The sorties, first of their kind in the state, were made between September 9 and 16, the official associated the state’s counter-intelligence wing, which is investigating the incident, told IANS. Terrorist Akashdeep Singh, who has been arrested in this connection, has confessed that he was in touch with Pakistanbased terrorist Ranjeet Singh Neeta on the arms drops, said the official, requesting anonymity. Police have also recovered a drone, the last one, that crashed in the Indian territory. It was fitted with high-end technology and GPS. Three days ago, in a major crackdown on terror, the police busted a module of the re-

vived Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), the Pakistan-backed, Germany-based militant group that was conspiring to unleash a series of terrorist strikes in Punjab and adjoining states, especially Jammu and Kashmir. A cache of arms, including five AK-47 rifles, and other material was also seized in the raid in border Tarn Taran district. Given the international links and the ramifications of the conspiracy, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has decided to hand over further investigations in the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to ensure that the entire conspiracy is fully and expeditiously unraveled. He also sought Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s intervention. “Recent incidents of Pakistanorigin drones dropping consignments of arms & ammunition is a new and serious dimension on Pakistan’s sinister designs in aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370. “Request @AmitShah ji to ensure that this drone problem is handled at the earliest,” he said in a series of tweets. The Chief Minister has also

urged the Central government to direct the Indian Air Force and the Border Security Force to launch necessary countermeasures to check any further hostile attempts. Director General of Police Dinkar Gupta told reporters that the weapons were suspected to have been delivered by drones launched by the InterServices Intelligence (ISI), and state-sponsored jihadi and proKhalistani terrorist outfits working under its command. He said that the purpose seems to have been scaling up terrorism and militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and the Indian hinterland, in the wake of the recent developments in the Kashmir Valley. He said the police operation was based on different inputs gathered from sources that activists of the banned KZF planned to carry out multiple terrorist strikes in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and other states. In an operation carried out by Assistant Inspector General, Counter Intelligence, Ketan Baliram Patil, along with various Punjab Police teams based in Chandigarh, four module

Congress announces candidates for Punjab bypolls

Chandigarh (IANS): The Congress on Monday announced candidates for bypolls in four Assembly constituencies of Punjab. It has fielded Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal from Phagwara (Scheduled Caste) seat, Indu Bala from Mukerian, Sandeep Singh Sandhu from Dhaka and Raminder Awla from the Jalalabad seat. IAS officer Dhaliwal, who was working as Director of Land Records in Jalandhar city,

resigned from his post just hours before his name was announced by the party. While the bypoll to the Mukerian seat was necessitated by the death of Rajnish Babbi of the Congress, those in Jalalabad, Dhaka and Phagwara were necessitated after their MLAs vacated the seats. The Jalalabad seat was vacated by former Deputy Chief Minister and Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal; Dhaka seat by AAP’s H.S.

Phoolka and Phagwara by BJP’s Som Parkash. Indu Bala is the widow of Babbi. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has said that the Congress would easily win the bypolls to all the four Assembly seats. Polling is scheduled for October 21 and the counting of ballots will take place on October 24. The Congress has 78 legislators in a House of 117.

members were arrested and arms, ammunition, explosives and communication devices seized. Gupta said the module was backed by the Pakistan-based KZF chief Neeta, and his Germany-based associate Gurmeet Singh, who had reorganised their outfit to revive terrorism in Punjab. With the help of local sleeper

cells, they had spotted, radicalised and recruited local members, besides arranging funds and sophisticated weapons from across the border for operationalising their modules. Those arrested in the raid have been identified as Baba Balwant Singh, Akashdeep Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Balbir Singh - with the first two having a criminal past and multiple

cases against them. Altogether, five AK-47 rifles, along with 16 magazines and 472 rounds of ammunition, four Chinese made .30 bore pistols, along with magazines and 72 rounds of ammunition, nine hand grenades, five Thuraya satellite phones and Rs 10 lakh in fake Indian currency notes have been recovered from them, the police said.

Amarinder Singh slams Harsimrat on ‘langar’ GST issue

Chandigarh (IANS): Turning the tables swiftly, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday ridiculed Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal for once again citing “half-baked facts” on the ‘langar’ GST issue and accused her of unnecessarily dragging on the controversy even after her lies on the issue were completely exposed. “Do you have even a clue as to what you are saying,” he asked the Akali Dal leader, after she demanded immediate release of the total refund claim of Rs 3.27 crore [1 crore = 10 million] to the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC). Countering her latest tweet on the sub-

Harsimrat Badal

ject of refund of state’s share to the SGPC against the state’s share of the ‘langar’ GST for Sri Darbar Sahib, the Chief Minister lashed out at Harsimrat Kaur’s apparent lack of knowledge with

regard to the matter. He also lambasted her for her failure to push for clearance of pending dues by the central government, which had released a mere Rs 57 lakh so far against its share of the pending claims. Flaying Harsimrat Kaur for her baseless criticism against his government, the Chief Minister said it was clear that she was either completely ignorant of the facts of the matter, or was deliberately and maliciously manipulating them to further her political interests. Pointing out that the ‘langar’ GST concession was notified by the Central government only on August 1, 2018, the Chief Minister said since the notification,

his government had received only four bills from SGPC amounting to Rs 1.96 crore. His government had on Tuesday cleared every single penny of these claims, as he had himself disclosed through a statement, Amarinder Singh added. Hitting out at Harsimrat Kaur for playing politics over such a sensitive religious issue, which was close to every Sikh’s heart, the Chief Minister further quipped that, unlike the Central government, of which the Akali leader was a part, his government had moved at an unprecedented pace to verify and clear the Rs 1.96 crore in claims received since the issuance of the notification.

Fortis to expand Mohali hospital, build de-addiction centre

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday extended his government’s full support to healthcare major Fortis to expand their existing hospital at Mohali, as well

as to set up a drug and alcohol de-addiction and rehabilitation centre with an investment of over Rs 1,500 crore [1 crore = 10 million]. The Chief Minister’s offer came at a meeting here

with Fortis Chairman Ravi Rajgopal, accompanied by Fortis Healthcare Group Chief Executive Ashutosh Raghuvanshi. Fortis officials shared with the Chief Minister their plans to invest Rs

1,500-2,000 crore over the next two years for the expansion of the Mohali hospital and set up the new centre on the fiveacre piece of vacant land at the existing hospital premises.

The expanded facility, company officials said, would be in line with the state government’s vision of making healthcare accessible to all. A government spokesperson said Fortis had pro-

posed to build a 100-bed drug and alcohol deaddiction and rehabilitation centre to support the state government’s fight against drugs and efforts to treat and rehabilitate drug addicts.

Didn’t give clean chit to Badals in sacrilege case: Amarinder Singh

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said he had not given any clean chit to ex-Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s family over their alleged involvement in the sacrilege case. “At no point did I say Parkash Singh Badal, or his son Sukhbir, was not involved in the sacrilege...all I have said was that Badal did not himself go and tear up the holy Guru Granth Sahib. But that does not rule out his involvement in the matter,” he said in a statement. The Chief Minister was reacting to a media report.

“They (the Badals) were as responsible as the men who had indulged in the actual act of desecration that had cascaded into such a grave chain of events for the state and its people,” said the Chief Minister. The Badal family not only failed to prevent the large number of cases of sacrilege that happened under their watch but also allowed the culprits to go scot free, he added. The Chief Minister said the family, being in power at that time, were totally responsible for the events that led to the sacrilege and

the subsequent police firing. The Badal family cannot not shrug off their culpability on this count, which was as grave a crime as actually tearing off the pages of the Guru Granth Sahib, Singh said. “As Chief Minister, am I not responsible for the law and order situation in the state today? If there is a spurt of crimes, wouldn’t the people and the media blame me?” the Chief Minister asked. Badal’s decision to back the jailed Gurmeet Ram Rahimled Dera Sacha Sauda in

‘Fukrey Boyzzz’ to add value to ‘Fukrey’ franchise

Mumbai (IANS): Producer Ritesh Sidhwani, whose production company Excel Entertainment makes an entry into television space with the upcoming animation show, “Fukrey Boyzzz”, has said that the show will add value and strength to the “Fukrey” franchise. Sidhwani was interacting with the media at the launch of “Fukrey Boyzzz” on Wednesday in Mumbai, along with the “Fukrey” cast comprising Pulkit Samrat,

Varun Sharma, Manjot Singh and Richa Chadha. Accompanying them was Uttam Pal Singh, business head, Discovery Kids, which has tied up with Excel to bring back the popular “Fukrey” characters in animated form in the show “Fukrey Boyzzz”. The show will revolve around the animated avatars of the popular Hunny, Choocha, Laali and Bholi Punjaban along with all the other characters in the movie.

“People used to ask me when we are going to venture into television, but we weren’t being able to find the right story for the television platform. There are shows we have produced for the digital platform but they are more like features. This, I think, lent itself and these are the characters that people have loved,” said Ritesh Sidhwani, who is the co-founder of Excel Entertainment. Sidhwani added that Dis-

covery Kids as a channel was “the right fit” for such a show, because it specifically caters to aged eight to 13 years. He added they will be ready with “Fukrey 3” by next year. “We are in the middle of scripting the third part of ‘Fukrey’, which should be ready by next year at some point. So, I think it will only add-on. I think this was the perfect fit to pick one of our films which have made its mark and bring it on to this

platform.” Sharing her thoughts on “Fukrey Boyzz”, Richa Chadha, or Bholi Punjabin in the series, said: “I loved it. I always felt that our film should be made in animated version. It’s like ‘Harry Porter’. Everyone loves it and everyone enjoys it.” Varun Sharma has got a lot of appreciation playing Choocha’ in the “Fukrey” franchise. “We have all watched animation shows in our growing-up years.

It’s a blessing for any actor when you see an animated version of your character, it feels beautiful. My niece and nephews are excited about this show. I showed them the trailer and some stills and they can’t wait to watch ‘Fukrey Boyzzz’ on Discovery,” said Varun. “Fukrey Boyzzz” will be launched in six languages -- English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada only. The show goes on air from October 12.

The film, which was scheduled to release on October 4, will now open on Gandhi Jayanti, thereby setting up a box-office clash with the Hrithik Roshan-Tiger Shroff action drama “War” and Chiranjeevi’s Telugu period drama “Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy”. The date change was announced on the Twitter handle of Warner Bros.

“’Joker’ movie will now release in India on Wednesday, October 2nd, two days ahead of its initial scheduled release,” the post read. It is interesting to note that the film, which has left people wondering if it will encourage violence, will release on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who epitomises non-violence. Directed by Todd Phillips, “Joker” is based on the popular DC supervillain of the same name. It follows the life of Arthur Fleck (es-

sayed by Phoenix) as an aspiring stand-up comedian and his transition into becoming the Joker. Feeling depressed? This Chinese game may be the answer

New York (IANS): When it comes to reducing depression risk among middleaged and older adults in China, playing a game of mahjong may be the answer, according to new research. A study published in the journal Social Science & Medicine says that regularly playing the popular tilebased strategy game - mahjong - was one of several types of social participation linked to reduced rates of

depression among middleaged and older adults in China. “Global economic and

epidemiologic trends have led to significant increases in the burden of mental health among older adults,

especially in the low and middle income countries,” said study co-author Adam Chen, Associate Professor at University of Georgia. Poor mental health is a major issue in China, which accounts for 17 per cent of the global disease burden of mental disorders. For the study, the research team analysed survey data from nearly 11,000 residents aged 45 years and older from the nationally representative China Health and

Retirement Longitudinal Study. They looked at symptoms of depression and compared it to the type and frequency of social participation, including visiting with friends, playing mahjong, participating in a sport or social club, and volunteering in the community. They found that, on the whole, participating in a wide variety of activities more frequently was associated with better mental

health. Specifically, urban residents who played mahjong, a popular strategy game, were less likely to feel depressed. “What is more surprising is that mahjong playing does not associate with better mental health among rural elderly respondents. One hypothesis is that mahjong playing tends to be more competitive and at times become a means of gambling in rural China,” Chen added.

Kindness is top priority in long-term relationship: Study London (IANS): One of the top qualities that people look for in a long-term relationship is kindness, a new research suggests. For the study published in the Journal of Personality, the research team picked

over 2,700 college students from across the globe and asked them to build themselves an ideal lifelong partner by using a fixed budget to ‘buy’ characteristics. While traits like physical attractiveness and financial prospects were important,

the one that was given the highest priority was kindness, said the researchers. “Looking at very different culture groups allows us to test the idea that some behaviours are human universals. If men and women act in a similar way across

the globe, then this adds weight to the idea that some behaviours develop in spite of culture rather than because of it,” said study principle researcher Andrew G. Thomas from Swansea University in Britain. The study compared the dating preferences of students from Eastern countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, and Western countries such as the UK, Norway and Australia. Students were given eight attributes they could spend ‘mate dollars’ on physical attractiveness, good financial prospects, kindness, humour, chastity, religiosity, the desire for children and creativity. People typically spent 22-26 per cent of their total budget on kindness and large parts of their budget on physical attractiveness and good financial prospects, while traits like creativity and chastity received less than 10 per cent. The results also showed a difference in a partner’s desire for children, which was a priority only for Western women.

Peanut butter for a healthier you Peanut butter, a high-protein spread made from grounded peanuts, is a nutritious and delicious snacking option. A staple in many countries, especially the US, it is finding growing acceptance in India due to increasing health consciousness and rising disposable incomes. Its texture and content make peanut butter a very tasty and filling snack. In other words, it is a super food. Although there are many known positives to eating peanut butter, it has some unknown positives as well. People think that peanut butter is for mass and muscle gain, but not many know that it is also great for losing weight. “It can help stop cravings that often lead to a person eating another portion. And its high protein and fibre content provides essential strength for bodily processes, making it a favourite snack of fitness enthusiasts ,” a spokesperson from Alpino Health Foods told IANSlife. A tablespoonful of peanut butter contains almost 100 calories. But these calories are in the form of mono-unsaturated fats that aid weight loss and cut the risk of obesity thereby preventing heart disease. On the other hand, saturated fats, found in dips and fried chips, lead to high cholesterol and heart disease. So peanut butter an ideal food for the body. And the chunkier it is, the more filling and healthier it will be.

2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt: The legend continues! By Autoreviewman The 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt is based on one of the most iconic cars ever portrayed in popular culture. First up is the trademark customary Dark Highland Green metallic paint – this mix is simply beautiful with a rich sparkling hue in daylight, that turns to a menacing dark tone at night. There are other subtle differencesa plain black grille with the Ford pony and a chrome surround, more chrome trim around the side windows, and dark-finished 19inch wheels that look like the iconic five spoke Torq Thrusts as on the 1968 version. Four black finished exhaust tips exit the rear. The ambience is also spread to

the inside with a dark ebony interior and a cool cue ball shifter for the six speed manual transmission. The Bullitt has special engine upgrades. The 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 offers 480-500 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque thanks to a larger 87-millimeter throttle bodies, a recalibrated engine management computer, and a performance intake

manifold borrowed from the Shelby GT350. There is also a larger radiator to handle extra cooling duties. Also added are: Brembo sixpiston front brake calipers shrouding 15.0-inch brake rotors, a Torsen limited-slip differential with shorter 3.73:1 gears, along with a stiffer rear anti-roll bar. A six-speed manual is the only transmission offered.

Our tester was priced at $57,525 and ended up at a stickered $61,650 On the road, the Bullitt delivers more smiles per mile than most cars, soaking up the myriad looks, glances and approving thumbs up of other motorists, Gunning the throttle is intoxicating, with the Bullitt’ s multi-mode exhaust system offering a deep bellowing V8 rumble. The as standard manual

shifter needs a slower action to engage each gear, but combined with a firm clutch, it’s very rewarding, once you get the hang of it. Pure fun! Each upshift snick of the gears delivers a nice whoosh of power. With nearly 500 horsepower on tap, the variable cam timing means the engine does not feel overwhelmed. Be warned, this is a fast car with tremendous accelera-

tion. The 2019 Bullit is my favourite Mustang for now with an excellent blend of style performance and understated desirability. A muscle car that to be enjoyed every day you own it. 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt: Priced from $57,525. Price as tested with options and destination delivery $61,650 More info at www.Ford.ca

2020 Land Rover Evoque: New Redesign Offers More! By Autoreviewman Land Rover’s Evoque CUV has been a major success story for the legendary British, now Indian owned automaker. Over 800,000 Evoques’s have found buyers worldwide since its introduction. And it’s not hard to see why. The stunning exterior and overall packaging was beautifully timed. The new second generation 202 model continues much of the same. The exterior always razor sharp after 8 years still looks amazing; taut, edgy, dynamic and racy. Not much has changed, a cleanup with now flush door handles and seamless flush glazing for better aerodynamics. The interior, meanwhile features

a light redesign with tidier reduced switch gear and a very clean look. There is more interior room, thanks to a slighter longer wheelbase, and the rear cargo space is also increased. New technology includes Range Rover’s excellent Terrain Response 2 technol-

ogy, which provides an automatic mode to the Terrain Response settings. There is also the segment first, ‘ClearSight Ground View’ technology, part of the optional 360 Surround Camera system that provides visibility under CONTINUED ON 19

The Rabbi Goes West *** Wagons Ho!

Religion can be a source of good or evil. Out to make amends and spread the good word of God is a free-spirited messenger on a perilous mission in The Rabbi Goes West. Straight from New York to of all places remote Montana our bearded one takes his gospel to rural farmers living the good life while Roaming the range. Interviews with local Jewish leaders and the so far non-indoctrinated citizens flesh out this engaging story. Full of bits of Jewish tradition one learns about the history of the ultra orthodox Chassidic movement born in New York with a desire to recruit others to their following. Folksy and charming The Rabbi Goes West wears its heart on its sleeve and is entertaining largely due to the charismatic performance of Rabbi Chaim Bruk As the chosen one. Playing

2019 Jaguar F-Pace SVR Review: 550 Horsepower “Magnificent beast,” By Auto Reviewman The mid-sized Jaguar F- Pace SUV with its thrusting, honed good looks, low- stance, and large wheels looks suitably expensive and exotic. Comprised largely of aluminum, helping to keep it lighter and more performance responsive, the F-Pace is already a sports car derived SUV. And, now Jaguar have made it even better with a 2019 SVR model, a high performance version of the F-Pace with Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations fitting a big 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 with a

stonking 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque into it. Jaguar refers to the F-Pace SVR as the “magnificent beast,” and it’s easy to see why. Jaguar says the SVR will do the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds with a top speed of 176 mph (283 km/h). All-wheel

drive is standard, and The ZF-sourced, eight-speed automatic transmission has revised shift mapping, and routes power to all four wheels. The SVR F- Pace is distinguished by, massive air intakes, and vents in the hood and front fenders. The

rear fascia has a new bumper with big quad exhaust pipes, and a unique rear spoiler. In addition to its larger 21 inch wheels, the F-Pace SVR gets special front fenders, rocker panels and a new rear spoiler. The spoiler out back isn’t only for show, either, and helps reduce aerodynamic lift. Inside, the cabin is gorgeous with beautiful soft leathers draping the dash, center console and door panels, and nicely bolstered front sport seats that feature very attractive lozenge quilted inserts

and embossed SVR logos in the headrests. On the road, the extra horsepower, and muscled up tweaks make the F-Pace into a screamer of a high performance SUV. Variable, rear-biased all-wheel drive and rear axle torque vectoring send power to the wheels that have the most grip, so making cornering precise and quicker. New Bilstein adaptive dampers, stiffer springs and a thicker rear antiroll bar also help in handling, maintaining a flat even keel in speed corners. The steering

is quick and offers very tactile, satisfying feedback. The tight sports-car-like handling helps the Jaguar feel firm and planted, there is very little body roll on the F-pace SVR and handling is exceptional for an SUV, almost sports-car like. Sporty, refined, fast and with an unmatched pedigree, this is one Jaguar everyone should aspire to. 2019 Jaguar SVR F-Pace. Suggested Retail Price $89,900. Website: www.jaguar.ca

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid - One of Best Electric Vehicles of 2019 Auburn Hills, Mich.: The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited continues to electrify the automotive industry. Autotrader says the Pacifica plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) — the first and only electrified minivan — is one of the 12 Best Electric Vehicles for 2019. This newest accolade takes the Pacifica’s overall award count to more than 120 and further solidifies its standing as the most awarded minivan since 2016. Editors at Autotrader created the inaugural 12 Best Electric Vehicles list to assist customers looking to CONTINUED FROM 15 the front of the vehicle. An optional ‘ClearSight Rear View Mirror’ also has HD video projection of the rear view on the interior mirror. Delivering sportier, more economical performance, the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder Si4

Editors considered a variety of important criteria, such as maximum range, electric-only range (for PHEVs), price, drivability and value, to help determine their “best of ” list. Categories were scored on a 1-to-5 scale with 5 being the high score. Each vehicle included in the list earned a combined average score of at least 3.8 out of a possible 5. “This is our first annual list of the best EVs and we expect the cars on this list

to change dramatically over the years,” said Brian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader. “That being said, the Chrysler Pacifica is really in a league of its own – there simply aren’t any
