India declares Saeed, Azhar, Dawood, Lakhvi terrorists New Delhi: India on Wednesday declared Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed, Jaish-eMohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar, LeT’s supreme commander of operations in Kashmir Zakiur-Rehman Lakhvi and fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, all based in Pakistan, as terrorists under the amended Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The declaration, made through a gazette notification issued on Wednesday, comes nearly a month after the Parliament approved a crucial amendment to the UAPA law. According to the amendment, individuals could also be declared as terrorists. Earlier, only groups or organisations could be declared as terrorists. The notification was issued based on clause (a) of sub-section (1) of section 35 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act which empowers the Central government to notify the name of an individual in the fourth schedule to the Act, if it believes that the individual is involved in terrorism. The Central government believes that Saeed, Azhar, Lakhvi and Dawood are involved in terrorism and are to be notified as terrorists under the UAPA, said the notification. “Maulana Masood Azhar alias Maulana Mohammad Masood Azhar Alvi alias Vali Adam Issa, having date of birth on July 10, 1968, son of Allah Baksh Sabir, is founder, chief and key leader of proscribed terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammad, which is listed as a terrorist organisation under the First Schedule to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. “Azhar has been designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations under the United Nations

Hafiz Saeed

Masood Azhar

Security Council Resolution 1267 on May 1 this year and was declared as a proclaimed offender by the Special Judge (POTA), New Delhi,” the notification said. It mentioned that the JeM under the patronage of Masood Azhar, extensively undertakes recruitment drives for terrorist activities and his preaching wings regularly organise events in order to urge people to promote terrorism and support their actions against India. Azhar has been charged with involvement in various terrorist attacks in India, which include the terror attack on the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly complex in Srinagar on October 1, 2001 wherein 38 people were killed, the terror attack on the Parliament on December 13, 2001 wherein six security force personnel, two parliament security service personnel and a civilian were killed, the terror attack on January 2, 2016 at Pathankot air base in Punjab by militants coming from Pakistan, wherein seven security force personnel were killed and 37 were injured. His outfit was also involved in terror attacks on Border Security

Force (BSF) camp at Humhama in Srinagar (October, 2017), on the CRPF camp at Lethpora, Pulwama (December, 2017) and on the army camp, Sunjwan, Jammu (February, 2018), said the notification. Azhar had also been instrumental in Pulwama terror attack on February 14 this year wherein 40 paramilitary troopers were killed. He was accused in various cases registered and being investigated by the National Investigation Agency and a charge sheet had been filed against him in the Pathankot air base attack case. A Red Corner Notice (No. A-1086/7-2004 and A-4367/52016) have also been issued against Azhar. Hafiz Saeed -- also known by his different aliases as Hafiz Mohammad Sahib, Hafiz Mohaddad Sayid, Hafiz Muhammad, Hafiz Saeed, Hafez Mohammad Saeed, Hafiz Mohammad Sayeed, Mohammad Sayed and Muhammad Saeed -- born on June 5, 1950, son of Kamal-ud-Din, is founder chief and key leader of proscribed terrorist organisation LeT and Jamat-udDawa (JuD), said the notification.

The LeT is listed as a terrorist organisation and Saeed is designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1267 on December 10, 2008. It was also noted in the notification that he has been involved in various terrorist attacks in India that include the Red Fort attack (December 22, 2000) in which three persons including two army jawans were killed, and the Rampur attack (January 1, 2008) in which seven Central Reserve Police Force personnel and one civilian were killed. He was also named in the 26/11 Mumbai attack in which 166 people, including 25 foreigners, were killed and 235 people were injured. Saeed, also instrumental on the attack of the BSF convoy at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2015, is accused in various cases registered and being investigated by the NIA which inter-alia include Jammu and Kashmir terror conspiracy and terror funding case and Dukhtaran-E-Millat case. A charge sheet had been filed against Saeed in Mumbai terror attack and RCN (No. A-2414/82009) was issued against him on August 28 this year for his role in the case. Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar -known with his different aliases as Dawood Hasan Shiekh Kaskar, Dawood Bhai, Dawood Sabri, etc. -- born on December 26, 1955, son of Ibrahim Kaskar, runs an international underworld crime syndicate and is involved in perpetrating acts of terror, said the notification. - IANS

Rushdie’s ‘Quichotte’ shortlisted for 2019 Booker Prize

New Delhi (IANS): Award-winning and internationally bestselling author Salman Rushdies new novel “Quichotte” is in the race to win this years 50,000 pound Booker Prize for Fiction. The news of the shortlist broke on Tuesday afternoon with an announcement from the organisers of one of the leading literary awards in the Englishspeaking world. “Quichotte” is published in India by Penguin Random House India, making it the only nominee by an Indian publisher in this year’s shortlist. This book is published under the Hamish Hamilton imprint in India, and was simultaneously released in the UK and India on August 29. Inspired by the classic “Don Quixote” by Miguel de Cervantes, “Quichotte” is one of the most anticipated books of the year and opened to exceptional reviews from the media. It is the 14th novel from the prize-winning author, the story of an ageing travelling salesman who falls in love with a TV

star and sets off to drive across America on a quest to prove himself worthy of her hand. The tragicomic tale is one of our deranged times, and deals, along the way, with father-son relationships, sibling quarrels, racism, cyber-spies, and the end of the world. Commenting on the nomination, Rushdie said: “It has been 19 years since ‘The Moor’s Last Sigh’ made it to the shortlist, so I’m obviously delighted. I’m also happy to be chosen, alongside such terrific writers, to be part of an interesting, strong list.” Meru Gokhale, publisher of Penguin Press, Penguin Ran-

dom House India, said: “In ‘Quichotte’, Salman Rushdie has again caught the zeitgeist by writing a novel that engages hilariously and meaningfully with the absurdities of the contemporary world, taking in pop culture, TV soaps, America’s opioid crisis, giants of world literature, and much more besides. “’Quichotte’ offers moments of pure pleasure for every reader. We are delighted to be Salman Rushdie’s publisher, and not surprised that he is once more in line for the Booker Prize for Fiction.” Rushdie is the author of 14 novels including “Midnight’s Children”, for which he won the Man Booker Prize, the Booker of Bookers Prize, and the Best of the Booker Prize. He has also published one collection of short stories and four works of non-fiction, including the internationally acclaimed bestseller, “Joseph Anton”, and has co-edited two anthologies. Imran Khan assures multiple on-arrival visas for Sikhs

Lahore (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that his government would issue multiple and onarrival visas to Sikh pilgrims coming from India and abroad and provide them maximum possible facilities during their visit to the holy sites. “I assure that you will be issued multiple visas... This is our responsibility. We will facilitate you rather will give you visas at airport,” The News International quoted Khan as saying on Monday while addressing the International Sikh Convention at the Governor House here.

“(We) will give you multiple visa to facilitate your journey,” he added. The convention was attended by Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar, federal and provincial cabinet members, and Sikh pilgrims from the UK, the US, Canada, Europe and other countries. The Prime Minister said after coming into power, his government realized the difficulties faced by foreigners to get Pakistani visas intending to visit the country for pilgrimage or tourism. “Though our government has changed the visa regime, the

mindset of creating hurdles will gradually diminish,” he added. Monday was the last day of the Convention which began on August 31 on the initiative of the Punjab Governor aimed at inviting suggestions regarding preparations for the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, at the gurdwara in Kartarpur Sahib in November. Indian Sikh pilgrims along with thousand others from across the world will visit the gurdwara in Pakistan’s Punjab province, where Guru Nanak Dev spent his final days.

2 UK MPs’ efforts to defend India on Kashmir fail London (IANS): Efforts of two British MPs to deflect attention and stem the anti-India feeling in the House of Commons on alleged human rights violations by the Narendra Modi government in Jammu and Kashmir went in vain during oral answers by Dominic Raab, foreign secretary in the Conservative party administration of Prime

Minister Boris Johnson, to questions. On Tuesday afternoon, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was the first item on the agenda of the house after a six week summer recess. Shailesh Vara, who is a Conservative MP of Indian origin, asked: “Following the action by the Indian Government in Kashmir,

on August 15, Indian Independence Day, a group of British Indians gathered outside the Indian high commission in London, but they were attacked by members of another community. “Will my right honourable friend confirm that the violence and abuse targeted towards the British Indian community on that occa-

sion are completely unacceptable, as they would be against any community on the streets of the UK?” Raab replied: “My honourable friend is absolutely right. Any violence is deplorable. It should not be conducted in this country, or anywhere else for that matter, against any individual communities. We now need to try to reduce these tensions but also, on a positive side, to build confidence-building measures to allow proper dialogue between the communities in Kashmir but also between India and Pakistan.” This was followed by Bob Blackman, another Conservative, asking: “It has been a long-standing policy of the Government that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is a bilateral issue. It has also been this House that stands up for human rights and the protection of minorities. Therefore, does my right honourable friend agree that the abolition of Article 370, which discriminates against women and minority religions, is to be welcomed?” Raab responded: “My honorable friend makes the point that there are different sides to this. But the reality is that there have been widespread reports and concerns about detentions, mistreatments and the communications blackout. “There was a UN Security Council discussion on Kashmir on August 16. As well as wanting to respect the constitutional arrangements within India and in

relation to Kashmir, there are implications internationally, particularly as they touch on internationally respected and recognised human rights.” Clearly, Raab’s retort to Blackman was not at all helpful to India’s cause. It reflected the mood of the house. In fact, when Vara and Blackman submitted their queries, these were met with derision by a sizeable number of MPs. In contrast, 10 MPs from the three biggest parties in the Commons were distinctly agitated by the goings-on in Indian-controlled Kashmir. They were Hugh Gaffney, Dr Paul Williams, Paul Bloomfield, Imran Hussain, Liz McInnes and Emily Thornberry of the Labour party; Steve Baker, Anne Main and Dame Cheryl Gillian of the Conservative party; and Alison Thewliss of the Scottish National Party. It is well known that Kashmir is the number one agenda in Pakistan’s foreign policy. The moment the Indian government abrogated Article 370 of the Indian constitution and thereby removed Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in the Indian union on August 5, the Pakistani high commission in London swung into action. Not just the British Pakistani community, but anti-India pro-Khalistan elements were galvanised into making their presence felt. The MPs may have been away for their summer breaks; but they were

contacted and lined up to take India to task as soon as the British parliament was back in session. The net result was a 10 to 2 drubbing for India, with even the question from Blackman proving to be counter-productive. Given the controversial nature of the actions in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian high commission ought to have been prepared to meet the backlash. Generally, it is the responsibility of the high commissioner, the deputy high commissioner and political officers of India House to gear themselves to ward off the challenge. There are one minister and two first secretary level diplomats in the chancery’s political wing. The assignment as always was to approach key MPs individually and brief them thoroughly about the Indian viewpoint. Either this was not adequately undertaken or the MPs ignored India’s argument. There are two cabinet ministers of Indian extraction in the Johnson government - Home Secretary Priti Patel and International Development Secretary Alok Sharma. Besides, Rishi Sunak is Chief Secretary to the Treasury, which is almost a cabinet rank post. Despite this, the Indian high commission was attacked on India’s Independence Day on August 15 last month and again on Tuesday when damage was caused to the premises, according to a tweet posted by @ HCI_London.

Natural remedies could help finance Pharmacare

IT’S soon voting time and politicians will again try buying your votes with freebies. One is universal Pharmacare. England, France, and New Zealand have varying types of free drugs. Canada and the U.S. should have the same. But the U.S. debt is $22 trillion and Canada’s $2.2 trillion. The “Debt Time Clock” shows these debts are increasing by millions every hour. If this doesn’t scare you, nothing will. But could increased use of natural remedies help make Pharmacare more affordable? The National Pharmacare Advisory Council tells us it will cost $15 billion. But we’re all suffering from chronic amnesia if we do not remember that the costs always balloon when politicians get involved. Pharmacare is not a cheap proposition. Costs will escalate faster than you can pop more pills. Today, North Americans are already taking more drugs than they need. Free medication will only lead to more questionable prescriptions. Too bad no one is pushing for safe, effective natural remedies as a component of our national strategy. For example, North Americans want quick cures for heartburn and are prescribed drugs such as Nexium and Prevacid which decrease the stomach’s acidity. In 2011, these drugs racked up sales of $6.2 billion. Will people change bad habits that cause this problem if these pills are free? Or will they put a teaspoon of baking soda in glass of water and drink it slowly to see if it provides relief? Or try ginger and other remedies? I doubt it. It’s also appalling that 12.7% of people over the age of 12 take antidepressant drugs. Compared to our ancestors who survived in a hostile environment without pills, we’ve become a nation of wimps that need more and more pills, just to get through the day. Terrible disasters do strike. But rather than build up resilience, the trend is to cave. It’s possible to map crises to surges in the use of antidepressant drugs such as Prozac. This drug works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the circulation. But studies show that sun exposure can increase the amount of serotonin in the circulation by 800 percent in one day and the sun is free! A new “No Nonsense” book, written with my daughter, Diana Gifford-Jones, explains my natural health philosophy and is available on my website. It shows that many inexpensive, safe, and effective vitamins, minerals and other natural products can treat a variety of common problems without the complications of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. If politicians and everyone else stopped taking unnecessary medications and started letting mother nature back into our lives, we’d be a stronger society. I wish I could say that politicians will stop wasting money in multiple ways and make Pharmacare affordable. But that’s unlikely when election time looms. So the debt clock keeps ticking. Stein’s Law says, “If something can’t go on forever it has to stop. It’s just a matter of when.” And Stein’s Law always wins. If we ignore it, the result will be economic disaster and

we will all need more than free medicine. Good sense demands that drug costs must be mitigated. Some are too expensive for patients and should be subsidized by government. But it should not apply to overthe-counter drugs or routine prescriptions that often make false claims. And governments must learn that safe, inexpensive, natural remedies, tried first, could save millions of dollars. In our society, no person should go hungry in order to have needed medication. But will free drugs result in longer waiting lists for surgery? Or will there be fewer palliative beds for those in pain? These and other questions must be resolved. Chandigarh (IANS): At least 21 people were killed and 26 injured in an explosion following a blaze at an unauthorised firecracker manufacturing unit in a densely-populated residential area in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district on Wednesday, an official said. The dead included the firecracker manufacturing unit’s owner and six of his family members. Rescue workers, including Na-

21 killed, 26 injured in blast in Punjab firecracker unit tional Disaster Response Force personnel, were on the job to retrieve two missing people from the badly-damaged building located next to the totally damaged firecracker unit in Batala town of the district, Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujwal told the media at the spot. He said seven grievously injured were referred to the Guru Nanak Hospital in Amritsar. A number of nearby buildings,

including a car workshop, were badly damaged in the explosion. An elderly woman and her grandchild, who were passing close to the disaster spot, were among the dead. The cause of the blast, which damaged the buildings in radius up to 200 metres, is yet to be ascertained, police said. Even a few stranded vehicles were flung up in the air with the blast. Cabinet minister Sukhjinder

Singh Randhawa, who reached the accident spot, announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The government ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. Locals complained the firecracker unit was running illegally for the past many years. It were manufacturing and storing crackers for a ‘nagar kirtan’ - a religious procession relating to the birth anniversary celebrations of Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak Dev - slated to reach the town late Wednesday evening. “The firecracker factory has been working in this locality for the many years. We have complained against the factory seven-eight times to the local administration, but no action has

been taken against it,” a local resident told the media. He said a similar blast occurred in this area in January 2017, leaving one person dead and three injured. Expressing anguish over the loss of lives, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said rescue operations were underway with the Deputy Commissioner and the Super-

intendent of Police heading the relief efforts Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol, too, expressed grief over the blast. “Saddened to hear about the news of blast in Batala factory. NDRF teams and local administration has been rushed for rescue operation,” Deol tweeted.

New Delhi (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday sought a comprehensive mechanism from the Centre to check recurrence of floods, which was causing the state to suffer damage to the tune of crores of rupees every year. The Chief Minister called on Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat here to raise the issue and put the onus of devising a method to prevent floods on the Central government. Addressing the media after the meeting, Amarinder Singh said he had apprised the Union Minister of the ravages caused by the

floods to the state, which was not in a position to bear the losses year after year. He said he had suggested to the Union Minister various measures like de-silting, and creation of water reservoirs. “It is now up to the ministry to find ways and means to avert such crisis in the future,” he added. His government’s top priority in the wake of the recent floods was to save lives, said the Chief Minister, expressing concern over the fact that many of the state’s villages were submerged in water with more than 1.72 lakh acres of crop damaged and more

besides 500 houses destroyed, in addition to loss of cattle. Asked to comment on the Akali Dal charge that his government had failed to provide adequate relief to the flood victims, the Chief Minister said the party should have taken steps during their 10-year rule to build and strengthen the state’s infrastructure. On being asked about SYL hearing in the Supreme Court slated for Tuesday, the Chief Minister said the matter was sub judice and he could not comment on the same. The issue was not discussed in the meeting, he added.

Chandigarh (IANS): Congressruled Punjab on Monday refused to implement stricter amended Central Motor Vehicles Act at the moment, citing the whopping penalty for traffic violations which would put

Punjab Chief Minister takes up Pakistan forced conversion issue with Shah ties, he told the media after his meeting with Shah. In response to a question, the Chief Minister said he had even made a public statement seeking the personal intervention of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to take stern action against the culprits. On being asked about the extension of timeline for another Amarinder Singh and Amit Shah.

tre’s intervention to arrive at a negotiated settlement on the matter. The apex court had earlier told the parties concerned to come to a decision on the construction of the SYL canal, and it will only decide on the matter, if negotiations could not resolve it. The controversial 1981 water-sharing agreement, after Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966, is the core of the deadlock. SYL Canal was supposed to be constructed for effective allocation of water within the two states. While Haryana constructed its portion of the canal, Punjab, after the initial phase, stopped the work, which led to multiple cases. In a decree on Haryana’s suit, the top court in 2002 ordered Punjab to honour its commitments on water sharing. In 2004, Punjab rolled out the Punjab Termination of Agreement Act to end the 1981 agreement and all other pacts connected with sharing waters of Ravi and Beas rivers. Punjab filed an original suit

in the apex court, which was rejected in 2004. The suit had asked the Centre to take control over the remaining construction of the canal project. In November 2016, the apex court referred a law passed by the Punjab Assembly in 2004 unconstitutional, as it terminated the SYL canal water-sharing agreement with neighbouring states. In 2017, Punjab returned land to be used for construction of canal, to its original owners. The top court has said repeatedly that it is not inclined to go through the facts and issues already adjudicated upon, and the decree that it has been passed has to be executed. Haryana has maintained that construction of the canal should not be delayed and that the delay in execution of the top court’s decree passed in 2002 will not go down well in establishing common people’s faith in the judiciary. Punjab had, however, told the top court that the canal land returned to the landowners is not possible to be recovered.

was already in talks with his Haryana counterpart to resolve the issue in the best possible way, he added. On the issue of Kartarpur corridor, the Chief Minister said he was fully satisfied with the progress of the project, which was being executed as per schedule, with officers of both countries scheduled to meet again within a couple of days.

Supreme Court gives 4 months to solve Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal issue New Delhi (IANS): Emphasizing on an amicable solution, the Supreme Court on Tuesday gave four months to Punjab, Haryana and the Centre to develop a consensus between the two states over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal. Attorney General K.K. Venugopal asked a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra for three months to conduct discussions towards an amicable solution. The court agreed to extend the time-frame to hold talks and said it was ready to give four more months on the matter. Counsel for Haryana government, however, asked the court allocate a definite time-frame to conclude the talks. On Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had called on Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Reportedly, the water ministry has already held several meetings, attended by the Chief Secretaries of both two states, but the matter still remained inconclusive. Punjab has sought the Cen-

four months to Punjab, Haryana and the Centre by the Supreme Court for a negotiated settlement in the contentious SYL issue, Amarinder Singh said the apex court had already ordered both the governments of Punjab and Haryana to nominate their officers to find an amicable solution through talks. Priyanka and Nick are ‘People’ magazine’s Best Dressed for 2019

Los Angeles (IANS): Actress Priyanka Chopra and her musician husband Nick Jonas are “People” magazine’s Best Dressed of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday. This is the first time that the magazine has declared a couple as the winner of the prestigious title. The list this year includes

several uber-stylish celebrities including Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Celine Dion, Serena Williams and Billy Porter, Gemma Chan. Priyanka and Nick have emerged as a celebrity power couple over the past few years. They have made for stylish photo-ops at various high-profile events includ-

ing Met Gala and the Cannes Film festival this year. “Their best fashion moments come when they choose clothing that speaks to each of them,” Priyanka’s stylist Mimi Cuttrell told “People”. The edition with the complete list will hits newsstands in the United States on Friday. On the work front, Priyanka

has just signed her latest project, a Netflix adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s ManBooker Prize winning novel “The White Tiger”. It stars Rajkummar Rao in a central role and is directed by Iranian-American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani. She also has Shonali Bose’s film, “The Sky Is Pink” lined up for release this year.

Dharmendra reveals why he ate onions before shoot with Asha Parekh Mumbai (IANS): Veteran actor Dharmendra has recalled how, back in the day when he had to shoot with Asha Parekh, he would he would turn up on the set after eating onions. “Every movie of Asha ji’s was a super-duper hit and I used to call her Jubilee Parekh,” recalled Dharmendra, adding that he finally got to work with her in the 1966 film, “Aaye Din Bahaar Ke”. “We were shooting in Darjeeling, and after pack-up the producers and other crew members would party till late in the night. I would also join the party and we would get drink. In the morning the smell (of alcohol) would be quite evident, so to hide the smell I would eat onions,” said Dharmendra. Parekh, however, would then complain that he “smells of onion” adding that she didn’t like it. Asha Parekh and Dharmendra, along with Waheeda Rehman, are set to reveal such anecdotes when they turn up as guests in an up-

coming episode of the kids’ singing reality show, “Superstar Singer”, on Sony. On his onion-eating trick, Dharmendra finally admitted to Parekh on the reality show: “I told you that I eat onions to hide the smell of alcohol, and you asked me to stop drinking. On your suggestion, I stopped drinking and we became very good friends. We are like a family and those days were lovely. The Beautiful memories at times make me sad but the amazing experiences of the past help me cheer up.”

Asha Parekh recalled how Dharmendra would not touch a drop of alcohol even if he felt cold, just because he had promised her. “There was a song in which Dharmendra ji had to dance in the water. Because it was so cold, he would turn blue. Every time he came out of the water, he would be offered brandy. However, he would look at me, because I had told him that if he drinks I will walk out of the set. This went on for two or three days, but he did not take a sip of alcohol out of his respect for me.”

Jayant Kaikini’s No Presents Please: Mumbai Stories, translated from Kannada by Tejaswini Niranjana, is a collection of short stories on his native city of Mumbai dating back to the 1980s. The collection brings together ordinary Mumbai dwellers as Kaikini’s compassionate gaze takes in people in all corners of the vibrant city, examining loves, purity, and the collision course of identity, generational values and tradition. Tejaswini Niranjana’s translations beautifully ache with the rhythms of Kannada into English with no dilution. In these sixteen extraordinary t stories, readers are drawn into tales that sing with

How Sushant Singh Rajput helps kids get NASA training: Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who could not fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut, is trying to help children who want to see themselves flying in space in the future. “When I was a kid I really wanted to be an astronaut but I did not know where to go. I always wanted to go NASA but was declined again and again, so I got myself a really powerful telescope, which can zoom in on any creator on a bright moon night. It was two years back that I had a chance to go to NASA and I did a small workshop there. One year later I sent two kids to NASA, they were very bright kids and one of them won a gold medal there and he now trains to become an astronaut.

Angel Has Fallen (PG) ** Betrayed!

Ideas are the grease that runs the Hollywood wheels. Out to better their last effort are the forces behind Angel Has Fallen. Whether the stars have aligned correctly for this VVS Films release May well boil down to whether you are a fan of this limited series or a newcomer. Either way enjoy another summer time actioner now making waves at Cineplex Cinemas and Landmark Theatres around B.C. Brawn, brains and charm make up the DNA of action films. Fresh off two winning bouts of saving the President ace Secret Service officer Mike Banning is at it again. Only this time actor Gerald Butler must face some personal demons that weight heavily in family, friends and dare I say future employment. When a bad actor puts the screws to Banning all bets are off as to whether he can survive what lies ahead. Even

though we have seen some elements of this plot before Butler manages to make his character believable largely owing to the emotional baggage plaguing his daily life. Shot in Sofia Bulgaria Angel has Fallen is chalk full of fights. Bodies seem to be piling up

everywhere as a man tries to clear his name with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Veteran acting stalwarts Nic Nolte and Morgan Freeman add to the luster of an administration in chaos Stunts galore and lots of grit make this another bullet in the macho man arsenal

2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: Impressive and Good Value By Autoreviewman The new 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a well-known nameplate that once adorned the automakers sporty coupe. It emerged as a compact CUV for 2018, featuring some aggressive styling a roof spoiler, deep front air dam and a hatchback configuration. It looks unique sporty and edgy. The Eclipse Cross (base MSRP: $27,798; SE, $29,998; SE Tech Package, $31,998; GT, $35,998) arrives with an as standard 1.5L four- cylinder turbo engine, that develops 152 hp and 184 lb-ft. The transmission is a sole CVT auto—with a choice of two wheel or All-Wheel Drive. I would highly recommend the Super AllWheel Control (S-AWC) as the Eclipse Cross to buy. You get 215 mm of ground clearance and the proven S-AWC technology is one of the best

AWD systems on the market. As the Eclipse Cross, only came out in 2018, the 2019 model has very few changes. All 2019 Eclipses arrive as standard with a roomy, well equipped cabin. The front seats are supportive and comfortable and two adults, three at a squeeze will fit in the rear compartment. Everything feels to be of high quality in the interior, with good plastics and materials.

There is a high level of base equipment such as a 7” touchscreen display mounted atop the dash that can also be controlled via a touchpad Satellite radio, Bluetooth, Apple Carplay and Android Auto are standard across the line. There are electronic driver aids, including a rear view camera and cruise control on the base model. The SE version offers BLIS and rear cross-traffic alert. The SE Tech offers forward collision warning and mitigation, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. The top GT trim adds safety-wise is a multi-view camera system and head-up display. The Eclipse offers 640 Litres of storage behind the rear seats. With the rear seats folded there is 1,385 Litres of storage. On the road, the Eclipse Cross performs admirably. The 1.5L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder

offers: 152hp @ 5,500 rpm with Torque at 184 lb-ft @ 2,000-3,500 rpm. It is all delivered pretty seamlessly via the CVT. The ride is smooth and drama free. Features such as a responsive EDiff, Vectoring control, Active stability control, yaw control and ABS all ensure the best possible ride, control and handling on different surfaces. Note, there three selectable drive models include Auto, Snow and Gravel, that come with S-AWC system for superior performance. Fuel economy is rated at: 9.6/8.9/9.3 L/100 km city/ highway/combined. All in all, a very impressive vehicle backed by an unbeatable 20-year warrantee. 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: Priced from $27,798 - $35,998. More info at www.mitsubishi.ca

2019 Nissan Maxima Platinum: Performance Enhanced Sedan is a Stand Out!! By Autoreviewman The Eighth-Generation Maxima, known as Nissans performance family sedan. For 2019 the Maxima has mid - cycle upgrade with new front and rear fascias, V-Motion grille, LED headlights, redesigned taillights, new 19-inch wheels and a stunning new exterior sunset drift orange paint option. The interior also has a mild makeover, with grade specific upgraded. The Maxima is a front-engined with front-wheeldrive, and is powered by a 3.5-litre 24-valve DOHC V6 (300 hp, 261 lb/ft of torque) mated to a CVT with manual shift mode. There are four trim levels – SV, SL, SR, and Platinum as tested ($44,150. The full load Platinum as tested, is more luxuryoriented and offers the softer suspension set up,

smaller, tires, a power rear sunshade and wood trim model adds features like 360-degree Around View Monitor and premium climate controlled seats with special quilted leather inserts. Like a smartphone or tablet, the centre touchscreen eliminates many buttons and switches from the dash uses pinch and swipe features to access information. It’s all very high tech! , the NissanConnect system allows you to stay plugged in in any way you wish. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included standard. However comfort and luxury still abound, the seats are well cushioned and relaxing and features such as heated steering wheel add to the ambience. Front and rear legroom and headroom is good and the Maxima remain a comfortable five seater. Rear cargo ca-

pacity is a handy 14.3 cu ft. On the road, the Maxima’s engine has a boost of 10 horsepower, for 300hp and 261 lb.-ft. of torque at just 4,400 rpm, making this a fast, powerful sedan with good acceleration. The Maxima’s XTRONIC continuously variable transmission (CVT) works exceptionally well thanks to the new

engineering and uses a number of hi-tech sensors that measures lateral forces in acceleration, braking and speed to determine optimum shift points. There is a driver-selectable “Sport” mode that quickens throttle response, increases steering weight and changes shift patterns that quickens throttle response, increases steering weight and changes shift patterns. . Nissan fuel claims for the Platinum are: 11.6//7.9.6L/100 km (City/Highway and 9.9L/00Km combined.). Not really a lot to complain about with the Maxima, It is certainly on par and exceeds some of the entry - level European luxury brands. Highly recommended. 2019 Nissan Maxima Platinum sedan priced from $45,650. Price as tested $47,745. More info at www.nissan.ca
