New Delhi (IANS): US Secretary of State John Kerry said Thursday the US is "excited" about what Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to do for the people of India and they are all looking forward to a "terrific" meeting between Modi and US President Barack Obama in Washington in September. In an interview to NDTV ahead of meeting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for the 5th India-US Strategic Dialogue, Kerry said that the "attitude and tone of the new government is most exciting. There is so much opportunity and optimism as far as relations between the two countries are concerned", according to the NDTV website. Kerry arrived here Wednesday on a three-day visit to strike up the US' first high-level engagement with the Narendra Modi government. On the issue of visa for Modi, who was denied one by the US in 2005 in the aftermath of the Gujarat riots, Kerry said that Modi was "denied a visa by a different government. We will welcome him". "We will welcome Prime Minister Modi, he will definitely get a visa." He said the US supports India

Sonia, Rahul move high court against summons New Delhi (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son and party vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday moved the Delhi High Court against the summons issued to them for allegedly cheating and misappropriating funds of a company that used to publish the now defunct National Herald newspaper. On June 26, the trial court had issued summons to the Gandhis and four others including party treasurer Moti Lal Vora, general secretary Oscar Fernandes and Young Indian Private Ltd (a firm in which the Gandhis have a stake) directors Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda, asking them to appear before it Aug 7. Vora also approached the high court along with the Gandhis, who each own a 38 percent stake in Yong Indian Pvt Ltd., seeking quashing of

summoning orders of trial court and complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanium Swamy. Filing the plea, the Congress leaders said that Swamy is a political opponent and present criminal proceedings have been initiated only with intent to secure an oblique political objective. "The complainant (Swamy) has no connection whatsoever with the issue at hand. The criminal proceedings are therefore manifestly attended with malafide and the proceeding is maliciously instituted only with an ulterior motive for wreaking vengeance on the petitioners amongst others for narrow political objectives," said the plea. The trial court in its order had said that Young Indian Pvt.Ltd. appeared to have been "created as a sham or a cloak to convert public money

INDIA

to personal use" or a special purpose vehicle to acquire control over assets worth Rs.2,000 crore of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the publisher of the National Herald. Swamy had alleged that AJL had received an interest-free loan of Rs.90.25 crore from the Congress and that the party transferred the debt to YI for Rs.50 lakh. At the time, AJL, which had Moti Lal Vora as its chairman, claimed that it could not repay the loan and agreed to transfer the company and its assets to YI. The trial court had said that the complainant had established a prime facie case of dishonest misappropriation of property, criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy. The summons were also served on Young India.

World's maximum child labourers in India: Report New Delhi (IANS): India has 10.1 million child labourers in the 5-14 age group, the most in the world, a study revealed here Wednesday. "India continues to host the largest number of child labourers in the world with more than half of Delhi's working children forced to work more than eight hours a day without a single day's rest," said the report released by NGO Child Rights and You (CRY) in collaboration with Philips. "Over 51 percent of the employers employ children in the age group of 5-14 years when they should be in school.

NEW

The survey found 47 percent employers are aware of the law, but that doesn't deter them from employing children," said the report that was released at the end of CRY's "Click Rights Open Your Eyes" campaign, an initiative to sensitise citizens about child labour. The report said child labour is prominent (75 percent) in tea stalls, "dhabas" or small shops as there is complete lack of regulation of working conditions in this segment. "Though 84 percent employers find it important for child labourers to attend school and attain education, they continue

to employ them," said the report. "This is a vicious cycle where employers themselves are illiterate and have at some point been child labourers; the lack of education forces them into the unorganised sector which is unregulated and exploitative," Soha Moitra, Regional Director-North, CRY, said at the release of the report. "The persistence of this form of exploitation is indicative of a complete failure of society -there is no regulation and no fear of punitive action as laws remain good on paper but are rarely enforced."

Wear anything in Goa: Parrikar Panaji (IANS): People are free to wear what they want in Goa, but those who find it objectionable are also free to book them for obscenity, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the legislative assembly Wednesday. Parrikar was replying to a question by Congress legislator Aleixo Lourenco. "If anyone tries to take law in hand and harass a lady because of her clothes I will not tolerate. If someone feels that a particular cloth(ing) is too offensive and indecent he has the option of filing a case and going to court under obscenity act whatever it is," Parrikar said, assuring that no one would be allowed to do "moral policing" in the state. "We are not going to curtail anything, unless it becomes cause of law and

order (problem) or too much obscenity," the chief minister also told the House. A senior cabinet minister Sudin Dhavalikar had sparked national outcry earlier this month, after he demanded a ban on mini-skirts and bikinis in Goa, known as one of the top tourism and entertainment destinations in the world.

Modi's Nepal visit to boost hydropower, infrastructure cooperation: Observers

New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Nepal next month is expected to boost cooperation in hydropower and infrastructure sectors between India and the Himalayan nation, said observers here even as visiting Nepalese Commerce Minister Sunil Bahadur Thapa Wednesday expressed his country's keenness to learn from Modi's development model. “Nepal is more like an elder sister to India than a younger brother. We share a common terrain in southern Himalayas, as well as deep familial, cultural and civilizational bonds, Jayant Prasad, former ambassador of India to Nepal, said at a discussion here on "IndiaNepal Ties: Energising the Future organised by the Ananta Aspen Centre, a notfor-profit organisation. “At the people-to-people level, India’s ties with Nepal are closer than with any other country, he added. While highlighting the strong geopolitical and historical affinity between the two countries, Prasad identified energy and infrastructure as the key areas of bilateral convergence. “At the microlevel, the two sides need to work on making the border more people-friendly, without compromising on security, he said. “Building infrastructure, especially roads and railways, in Nepal with Indian support offers a great opportunity, he said.

“At the macro-level, cooperation in hydropower production can provide revenue to Nepal and power to an energy-starved India. According to D.P. Tripathi, general secretary of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Indian government’s approach towards Nepal is laudable. “Despite being in the opposition, I agree that the 'neighbours first' approach taken by the Indian government is correct, he said. “The government of India is wise enough to understand that history does not go back, it goes forward. Tripathi was of the opinion that in India-Nepal bilateral ties, “whenever political interaction has been spearheaded by the leadership, ties have been strong. “The relationship weakens when bureaucracy plays the dominant role. Hence, to ensure strong bilateral ties, it is important that the bureaucracy is subordinated to the political leadership. Joining the discussion via video-link from Kathmandu, Sujeev Shakya, author and founder chief executive of Beed Management, a management consulting and financial advisory firm based in Nepal, highlighted hydropower and tourism as potential sectors of IndiaNepal cooperation. “Nepal is looking forward to Prime Minister Modi’s visit. The onus of cooperation now lies with Nepal, and it needs to look at

cementing development and economic partnership, he said. “Hydropower, agriculture, tourism and services are the four sectors where economic relations can be deepened, he added. According to data released by the Ananta Aspen Centre, collaboration on hydropower production stands to benefit both India and Nepal. The hydropower potential of Nepal's rivers has been estimated at 83,000 MW, and the technical feasibility for development could yield an estimated 44,000 MW. In addition, connectivity between Indian and Nepalese grids could address energy needs of both countries. Both the South Asian neighbours conceptualised a power trade agreement during Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's visit to Nepal earlier this month during which the groundwork for Modi's visit was also laid. The Indian minister chaired a meeting of the Indo-Nepal Joint Commission, the first in 23 years, during his threeday visit. Nepalese Commerce Minister Thapa, speaking at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters here Wednesday, said: "Nepal is keen to learn from Modi's political model of development leading towards the path of economic model of development." "Democratic constitution based on consensus is

Indian returns lost purse filled with money

Dubai (IANS): In a heartening show of honesty, an Indian expatriate returned a purse containing 25,000 dirhams (around $6,800) and vital documents to an Italian woman who lost it on the roadside in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), media reported. Rasheed Pericheri, 36, took it upon himself to return the lost

purse that he came across on a pavement in the UAE's capital Abu Dhabi to the rightful owner, Emirates 24/7 reported Tuesday. The purse contained several credit cards, 500 dirham notes and other documents. Pericheri, in his search for the owner, managed to get the contact details through the driving

licence from the UAE's traffic department. Pericheri later found out that the purse belonged to an Italian expatriate, Elvira, whose husband was recovering from a heart attack. "When I called her (Elvira) to inform her that I had found the purse, with the money, she began crying," the report quoted

Pericheri as saying. "She said a big thank you and gave me some money also as a gesture of gratitude," he added. Elvira said she failed to find her purse when she returned to the road after she lost it. She also lodged a complaint with the police. "I was carrying 25,000 dirhams

to buy three tickets for me and my two sons to fly to Italy. My husband, an engineer in Abu Dhabi, had a heart attack and we had to repatriate him to Italy," Elvira said. "He has still not recovered and is in a coma. I am so grateful to Rasheed, who took the pain to track me down and hand over the purse," she added.

Indian American officials asked about 'your country','your government'

Washington (IANS): In an extremely awkward incident, a newly elected member of the US House of Representatives mistook two senior Indian American officials of the Barack Obama administration to be from India and asked them questions about "your country" and "your government". "I'm familiar with your country; I love your country," freshman Republican Curt Clawson told Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing Thursday, Foreign Policy online reported. "Anything I can do to make the relationship with India better, I'm willing and enthusiastic about doing so," he continued amid looks of confusion among State Department and Congressional staff attending the hearing. Biswal is the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairsand Arun Kumar is the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director General of the US and Foreign Commercial Service. Clawson, apparently confused by their Indian surnames and skin tone also asked Biswal and Arun Kumar if the Indian government could loosen restrictions on US capital investments in the country. "Just as your capital is welcome here to produce good-paying jobs in the US, I'd like our capital to be welcome there," he said. "I ask cooperation and commitment and priority from your government in so doing. Can I have that?" "I think your question is to the Indian government," Biswal responded. "We certainly share your sentiment, and we certainly will advocate that on behalf of the US." According to the report, it is extremely uncommon for foreign officials to testify before Congress under oath. "Even so, it's unclear if at any point Clawson realised his mistake, despite the existence of a witness list distributed to the various members detailing Biswal and Kumar's positions," the Foreign Policy report said. Clawson, who won a special election last month to fill the seat of Trey Radel, who had resigned after being convicted for cocaine possession, repeatedly touted his deep knowledge of the Indian subcontinent and his favourite Bollywood movies. It was Clawson's first day sitting on the subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. He was named to the full committee July 9 and Steve Chabot, subcommittee Chairman and Republican member from Ohio, spoke about Clawson's deep international business acumen and knowledge of four languages in welcoming him. "Our newest member of this committee, Curt Clawson speaks four languages and all kinds of other great stuff," Chabot said. Following Clawson's opening statement, Eliot Engel, the full panel's ranking Democrat, pointed out that Biswal and Arun Kumar work for the US government. "Thank you both for your service to our country, it's very much appreciated," New York's Engel said. An update in the Foreign Policy report said: "While Clawson's office did not respond to a request for comment, the Congressman apologised in a statement to USA Today later Friday. "I made a mistake in speaking before being fully briefed and I apologise. I'm a quick study, but in this case I shot an air ball," he said.

Afterwards, both sides expressed the hope that normalcy will soon return to Saharanpur and urged the people not to be carried away by rumours and work towards restoring peace and calm. Sukhbir Badal says Commonwealth Games medalists will get big bucks Chandigarh: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday congratulated Indian athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and wished them success. He noted that of the 22 athletes who had won medals at the games so far, four belonged to Punjab. He claimed that this was the result of the state government’s initiative in promoting sports and encouraging athletes. Congratulating Abhinav Bindra for winning the gold medal in men’s shooting, police officer Navjot Chana for winning silver in men’s judo, 16-year-old Malaika Goel for bagging silver in women’s shooting and Head Constable Rajwinder Kaur for winning a bronze medal in women’s judo, Badal said that they have brought honour to the state at the international level. Bindra was honored by the Punjab government for his magnificent performance at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Badal announced that all the medallists from Punjab would be honored by the state government and pointed out that Punjab gave the highest cash awards to athletes in India who make their mark in international competitions. He said that gold medallists will receive Rs.1.6 million, silver medallists Rs.1.1 million and bronze medallists Rs.600,000.

Amarinder Singh tells Akal Takht Jathedar to stay away from politics Mohali: Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday advised Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh to stay away from politics. “Akal Takht, the most sacred institute of the Sikhs, should not be involved in any dispute. The Akal Takht Jathedar should maintain a distance from politics,” said Singh, while referring to the controversy surrounding the HSGMC. The Tribune newspaper of Chandigarh reported that Singh said there was nothing “unconstitutional” in forming a separate gurdwara committee, and that the “Badals were misleading the Sikhs for their vested interests.” “They (Badals) are more concerned about earnings from gurdwaras through offerings and donations than the Sikhs' interests,” he said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal have spoken to Akhilesh Yadav about the incident.

constituency to be held next month as the Congress candidate, the party announced Saturday. The seat was vacated by her husband and former chief minister Amarinder Singh recently after he got elected to the Lok Sabha from the Amritsar parliamentary constituency in May this year. Congress president Sonia Gandhi cleared the name of Preneet Kaur as the candidate for the Patiala seat Saturday. The name of Harminder Singh Jassi

was cleared for the Talwandi Sabo assembly seat where also the byelection will be held Aug 21. Preneet Kaur had been Lok Sabha MP from the Patiala seat. She lost the Lok Sabha polls this time by around 20,000 votes to Dharamvira Gandhi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Amarinder Singh is now the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha. He had defeated BJP candidate Arun Jaitley in a bitter contest for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat

by over one lakh votes. Jaitley is now the union finance and defence minister. While the by-election to the Patiala seat was necessitated by Amarinder resigning from there, the bypoll for the Talwandi Sabo seat in Bathinda district of south-west Punjab is being held as the sitting Congress legislator, Jeet Mohinder Singh, quit the party and resigned the seat to join the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal. The Akali Dal has named him as its candidate for the bypoll.

Chandigarh (IANS) The defence ministry has cleared a proposal to allow international flights from Chandigarh airport, the Punjab government announced Friday. Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, in a communication to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said Spicejet and Indigo Airlines have been accorded permission to operate international flights from Chandigarh. "Mr. Jaitley also informed the chief minister that presently civil aircraft operations at Chandigarh were cleared from sunrise to 8 p.m. Regular extension of watch hours beyond 8 p.m.was under process. He, however, said that international flights would be facilitated beyond the existing watch hours as and when the international flights were finalized, as an interim measure," a spokesman of the chief minister's office said here. The defence ministry had earlier not given the green signal to operate international flights from Chandigarh airport. Since the airport here is a defence airport, the Indian Air Force (IAF) authorities allow commercial flights only from sunrise till 8 p.m. Even though the airport has night landing facility which is used by IAF aircraft, commercial flights are not permitted to land or take off during night hours. Badal had recently written to the ministry and had taken up the issue with Jaitley seeking clearance of international flights during night hours from Chandigarh airport. Presently, over a dozen domestic flights operate from the airport.

Maintain status quo on Haryana gurdwaras: Akal Takht matter gets resolved. Akal Takht Jathedar (chief) Gurbachan Singh said that the management of Sikh shrines in Haryana should be allowed to continue as at present till the controversy over Haryana's separate board was resolved. The Akal Takht also directed all sides not to make any state-

ments over the issue till the matter is sorted out. It said Saturday that all conventions of Sikhs called by various groups on the Haryana Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) controversy be called off. Punjab's ruling Akali Dal called off its Amritsar Sikh con-

vention, slated to be held Sunday, following the Akal Takht directive. The ad hoc HSGPC in Haryana too called off its Sikh convention in Karnal (Haryana) called Monday (July 28). A third convention called by the radical Akali Dal (Amritsar) was also called off. However, radical Sikh group Dal Khalsa Sunday asked the Akal Takht chief to withdraw the edict issued by him to the HSGPC. Terming it as an "unprincipled edict", Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said the Akal Takht would first have to withdraw its edict excommunicating three senior Sikh leaders of Haryana. The Akal Takht was entitled to issue directions to them only after withdrawing the edict, he said. "By directing the Akali Dal to call off their conclave, Giani Gurbachan Singh has provided them an escape route. It is strange and ironic that the jathedar is issuing directions to the HSGPC leaders whom he

had himself excommunicated from the Sikh Panth a few days back," Kanwar Pal Singh said in a statement. The Dal Khalsa leader accused the Akal Takht chief of being partisan in the whole issue and bowing to the diktats of the Akali Dal led by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. "Badals have been exploiting the Sikh sentiments and made the jathedar their subservient. We all know that Badals have scant respect for Akal Takht, its principles, tenets and traditions," he alleged. Despite the opposition from the Akali Dal and the Amritsarbased Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the newly set up ad hoc HSGPC committee Saturday elected Sikh leader from Haryana Jagdish Singh Jhinda as its first president. The committee also elected Didar Singh Nalvi as the senior vice president. Both Sikh leaders were recently excommunicated

Chandigarh (IANS): The central government has asked states to do away with affidavits for government-related work and promote self-attestation of documents. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal claimed Tuesday that the centre's directive was taken from the abolition of affidavits introduced in Punjab earlier under its administrative reforms programme. Badal said the Punjab government had earlier implemented reforms by abolishing

seeking of affidavits in all cases, except where there was statutory requirement. "On the recommendations of Punjab Governance Reforms Commission (PGRC), the state government has done away with all affidavits for 89 services that were 'local inventions' and sought from citizens," a Punjab government spokesman here said. He said the sweeping reform has resulted in annual savings of Rs.600 crore in Punjab, including monitoring cost of getting the affidavit, its attestation and loss of productivity and wages. from the Sikh community by the Akal Takht for supporting the creation of the HSGPC. The Akali Dal and the SGPC are locked in a bitter controversy with the Haryana's Bhupinder Singh Hooda government over the creation of the HSGPC, both having strongly opposed it. The Haryana assembly June 11 passed a bill under which a new committee would be set up to manage gurdwaras in Haryana. The Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management) Bill, 2014, got the assent of the state governor June 14. The SGPC, the mini-parliament of Sikh religious affairs, which has managed gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, will lose control over 72 gurdwaras in Haryana with the new law. The SGPC, which has a Rs.950 crore annual budget, controls majority of the gurdwaras in Punjab, including the holiest of all Sikh shrines 'Harmandar Sahib' (popularly known as Golden Temple) in Amritsar.

Bolt calls report nonsense, Indian wrestler Babita wins gold editor stands by it

Glasgow (IANS / CMC): A row has broken out in Glasgow over comments a newspaper claimed were made by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt to describe the Commonwealth Games that are currently on here. The Times reporter, Katie Gibbons, claims Bolt told her that he thought "the Olympics were better", that he was "not really" having fun in Glasgow and felt the Games were "a bit sh-t", reports CMC. However the 27-yearold sprinter has dismissed reports of his comments as "nonsense". "I'm waking up to this nonsense," Bolt tweeted. "Journalist please don't create lies to make head-

lines". However, the Times' Scottish editor, Angus Macleod, says he had full confidence in Gibbons. "We stand by this story 100 percent," he said. "We have utter confidence in this story." Reports here suggest that the Times were considering whether to publish a full transcript of the short interview with Bolt in Thursday's paper. Meanwhile, Bolt's agent, Ricky Simms has also dismissed the reports as "utter rubbish". "The atmosphere in and around the stadiums has been absolutely fantastic and I have absolutely no idea where these quotes have come from," said

Bolt. Games officials say the row is not diverting attention from the track and field action. "We take Mr. Bolt at his word. His tweet says it all. These are fantastic Games," said Mike Hooper, the chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation. "As you saw at his press conference Saturday, he is very upbeat. He is really positive about running the relay and I don't wish to comment on the journalist and work of the Times." Bolt is competing only in the 4x100m relay after struggling with a foot injury the whole season.

Glasgow (IANS): Indian wrestler Babita Kumari put on a stunning show to win the gold medal beating Canada's Brittanee Laverdure in the final of the women's 55kg freestyle category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the SECC Hall

here Thursday. The 24-year-old Babita, who had bagged the silver in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, won 9-2 against the 32year-old Brittanee, who ended up injuring her finger during the bout. Babita dominated most

of the proceedings and it was only in the last 15 seconds that Brittanne managed to open her scoring but by then it was all over. It was the fourth gold medal for India in wrestling.

Yogeshwar wins fifth wrestling gold for India

Glasgow (IANS): Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt won the fifth wrestling gold medal for India beating Jevon Balfour of Canada in the final of the men's freestyle 65kg category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the SECC Hall here Thursday. Yogeshwar was

declared the winner on grounds of technical superiority after he took a 10-0 lead within 1.53 minutes of the first period. It was also the second gold medal of the day after Babita Kumari's triumph in the women's freestyle 55kg category.

ChaiTime 10 Happiness Habits You Often Forget 1. You forget to breathe consciously

mean). You don’t need to do yoga when you stretch (although it helps if you know the basics). Stretching makes you feel lighter and more energetic.

Most spiritual teachings today talk about meditation of all forms and kinds. And they all share the same fundamental instruction: breathe. Go out, find a natural spot under the shade of tree or in a park. Inhale deeply, then exhale. Repeat this 10 times and watch how you lighten up your mood.

2. You forget to smile at people around you Smiling is not just a happiness booster for yourself, you also boost other people’s happiness. In fact, the more you smile at the people around you, the more they are eager to help you when you need it, even without asking. That’s because smiling breaks the ice between strangers and brings so much positive energy that you’ll end up making great friends.

8. You forget to pay attention

Saying thank you is not just about appreciating someone who did you a favor. It is also about your overall feeling and imagination: of being thankful for the littlest things that you receive and enjoy. Never let those things go unnoticed. Feel good, be thankful and you’ll be always happy.

You surf the internet, you watch TV, you go to work, you hang out with friends, you do so many errands. You are so caught up with all these things that you have forgotten to spend some quiet time. Take a moment to sit down, find a quiet place, breathe, and do nothing – feeling the silence and being happy.

4. You forget to savor your experience

Have you ever stopped for a while just to look at the vivid colors of flowers and plants? Have you ever listened intently to the birds singing in the morning? Have you ever hugged someone tightly, hugging much longer than usual? Have you walked barefoot on the grass or dried leaves? Paying attention is about engaging yourself in the unnoticed world around you, no matter how seemingly trivial things are. See how this habit can instantly bring you so much happiness.

It seems like dancing is the most awkward thing for many people, especially those who often feel the blues. To dance is always an expression of happy celebration. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t a pro. All you have to do is move to the beat, glide your feet on the ground, swing your arms and happily sway your hips. You’ll notice how easy it is to be happy when you dance.

At school, teachers scold students who daydream more than listen to boring lectures. We never thought that daydreaming was a healthy way to reboot your mind. You get to make your imagination work and get your creative juices flowing, and sharpen both your memory and concentration without being dragged down by all the worries that eat up your energy. Pause and daydream, and unleash happiness in a very simple way.

Bajrang, Lalita, Sakshi Malik and Satywart Kadian lost their final bouts to settle for the silver medal while Navjot Kaur clinched the bronze medal after she won the play-off match. This came after a stunning show by the Indian wrestlers Tuesday when they won three gold medals and a silver. Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, Amit Kumar, and Vinesh Phogat bagged gold medals and Rajeev Tomar settled for the silver. The first medal of the day came from Lalita, who lost her women's freestyle 53 kg final to Nigeria's

Odunayo Adekuoroye. Odunayo completely dominated Lalita and took just 31 seconds to seal the gold medal. The Nigerian managed to pin down the Indian and raced away with the win. Next up was Bajrang, who went down 1-12 to Canada's David Tremblay in the men's freestyle 61 kg final. Tremblay took just 84 seconds to beat Bajrang 12-1 in the first period. The Canadian was declared the winner on account of technical superiority. Sakshi also had to endure an embarrassing loss to to Nigeria's Aminat Adeniyi and settle for the silver medal in the women's freestyle 58 kg final. Aminat completely dominated Sakshi and took a lead of 10-0 in two minutes 24 seconds when the match had to be stopped on grounds of tech-

nical superiority. Kadian fought well but gave it away in the end to Canada's Arjun Gill and got the silver in the men's freestyle 97 kg final. Both the wrestlers were tied at 4-4 after the end of the bout but Gill was declared the winner since he had a takedown. Kadian had won his Round of 16 and quarter-final comprehensively and then went on to defeat England's Leon Rattigan 8-4 in the semi-final. Navjot won the bronze medal beating Scotland's Sarah Jones in the bronze medal play-off in the women's freestyle event. Navjot, 24, won 13-0 against the 31-year-old Sarah. Navjot was leading 9-0 when she pinned down Sarah in her last move to clinch four points and bagged the match on account of technical superiority. With only four contestants in the women's freestyle 69 kg event, Navjot started directly in the semis but lost 0-10 to Dori Yeats of Canada. Earlier, Bajrang too had easy outings in his first two bouts and then defeated Nigeria's Amas Daniel 5-2 in the last four clash of the men's freestyle 61 kg category. Among the women, Sakshi and Lalita started directly in the quarter-finals with both coming out on top. In the freestyle 53 kg semifinal, Lalita thrashed local girl Shannon Hawke 4-0 while Sakshi defeated Braxton Stone 8-5 in the freesytle 58 kg last four clash.

Fawad has 'khoobsurat' experience with Sonam

PAKISTANI actor Fawad Khan's experience of working in India was very good and he credits his "Khoobsurat" co-star Sonam Kapoor for it. "She is a great person and I enjoyed working with her. The environment on the sets was very homely and I didn't face any problem at any stage," Fawad said here Sunday on the sets of "Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega". "I didn't face any problem in communicating with the people on the sets and a lot of credit goes to her (Sonam) for that," he added. New 2015 Ford F150: will set new standard for pickup trucks

Ford introduces the all-new Ford F-150, the reinvention of America’s favorite truck. Ford say the new icon truck is the toughest, smartest and most capable F-150 ever – setting the standard for the future of trucks. In designing the backbone of the F-150, Ford engineers improved the truck’s signature fully boxed ladder frame. It is all-new with more high-strength steel than ever – making it stronger and lighter. High-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloys – already used in aerospace, commercial transportation, energy and many other rugged industries – are used throughout the F-150 body for the first time, improving dent and ding resistance and also saving weight. Overall, up to 700 pounds of weight have been saved, helping the F-150 tow more, haul more, accelerate quicker and stop shorter, and contributing to efficiency. “More than ever before, customers want a truck that is a dependable partner, mobile office and a go-anywhere workshop,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global

Product Development. “To meet the needs of our truck customers, we created smart new features and a whole new approach to using advanced materials and engines to improve capability and efficiency.” The frame uses high-strength steel rated up to 70,000 psi – stronger than the steel found in some competitors’ heavy-duty pick-

up truck frames. Eight through-welded cross members provide increased stiffness, while staggered rear outboard shocks provide greater stability. Several groundbreaking new productivity features debut in the all-new F-150, including many class-exclusives. They include: 360-

In addition there the tailgate is also damped, dropping down, hands-free, to a flat position when opened, High-wattage power outlets (400 watts, 110 volts) in the cab, allowing drivers to easily charge corded tools, battery chargers or mobile devices onsite or while driving, LED spotlights on side view mirrors, which provide powerful, durable and bright lighting around the truck exterior, Latest EcoBoost® technology in an all-new, even more efficient 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine that features extremely high output and lightweight design, Next-generation tailgate step, which is now fully integrated inside the tailgate and virtually invisible when not in use A range of four engines provides more power to meet almost any customer need. A new 2.7-liter EcoBoost with standard Auto Start-Stop and a 3.5-liter V6 engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing join the proven 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 5.0-liter TiVCT V8. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine features a lightweight, compact design to deliver the same power as some mid-range V8s. Auto Start-Stop technology helps save fuel. Unlike start-stop solutions in other vehicles, this technology – specially tuned for truck customers – shuts off the engine to save fuel when the vehicle is stopped, except when towing or in four-wheel drive. The engine restarts in milliseconds when the brake is released. Ford F-150 trucks equipped with EcoBoost engines also will benefit from standard Active Grille Shutters. Active Grille Shutters stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during low-speed stopand-go driving or while working in hot weather. They automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag at cruising speed. Both the exterior and interior design of Ford F-150 reflect decades of listening to customers and understanding their occupational and recreational needs. The exterior is characterized by a new shape that suggests capability, with a wider Built Ford Tough stance, prominent wheel arches and chiseled grille. Comfort, utility and refinement define the truck’s interior. Ergonomically optimized seating for the front row positions enhances comfort, while extending legroom for rear passengers. Buttons and controls are optimized so they can be operated while wearing work gloves. Storage options include laptop stowage in the center console, as well as quick storage solutions When it goes on sale late this year, the allnew Ford F-150 will continue the tradition of offering the broadest selection of trim levels in the full-size pickup segment. Five primary trims are available: XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. Chrome appearance packages are available with XL, XLT, Lariat and King Ranch. Monochromatic sport appearance packages are available with XL, XLT and Lariat. Keep all 'roza' in my mother's memory: Mahesh Bhatt

MAHESH Bhatt observes fasts during Ramadan as a tribute to his late mother and says on Eid he looks forward to "uniquely designed vegetable biryani". His colleague Shabana Azmi enjoys the festival by feasting with loved ones and appreciates it for "the goodwill" and "continuity of tradition" that it brings. Here is what celebrities have to say about the festival being celebrated Tuesday: Mahesh Bhatt: Celebrations begin tonight as soon as we spot the moon. Like every year we usher in Eid by playing the song "Gali mein aaj chand nikla" from my last directorial film "Zakhm". I look forward to eating my Eid speciality, a uniquely designed vegetable biryani made specially for me by my neighbour. Do you know I keep all the 'roza' in the memory of my mother? I've been doing that since 1998 after her demise. Shabana Azmi: I'll be celebrating at home with family and close friends as has been the norm. During earlier times abba's (father Kaifi Azmi) friends would drop in and the standard fare was 'dahi vadas' and 'sheer khorma'. Now everybody just comes for lunch. Biryani, kababs, aloo gosht, chicken dum, mirchi ka salan and sheer khorma is the Eid menu. On the night before Eid, everyone pools in to cut the badaam and pista for the sheer khorma. Kids put on mehndi, bangle-wali comes to make jodas for all and everybody waits with bated breath to sight the 'Eid Ka Chand'. Alas, the ghararas have made way for the more practical salwar-kurta. Kids look forward to their Eidi. I love the goodwill and the bonhomie and most of all the continuity of tradition. Adnan Sami: My wife Roya and I will spend Eid with close friends. Our thoughts and hearts are with the people of Gaza and the tragic times they are enduring. May the Lord have mercy on them." Zarine Khan: My entire 'khandaan' (family) comes together on Eid. Then in the evening we will visit friends. (IANS)

Five Indian boxers reach Commonwealth Games semis

Glasgow (IANS): Indian boxers Pinki Jangra, L. Sarita Devi, Devendro Singh, Mandeep Jangra and Vijender Singh reached the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games in their respective categories at the SECC Hall here Wednesday. However, Amritpreet Singh bit the dust as he lost the men's 91 kg quarter-final bout to local pugilist Stephen Lavelle. The judges found the Scot to be better in all the three rounds to win with a scoreline of 29:28, 30:27 and 30:27. Pinki started the proceedings with a dominating 4:0 win over Papua New Guinea's Jacquiline Wangi in the women's 48-51 kg quarterfinal.

She will now face Northern Ireland's Michaela Walsh in the semis Friday. Sarita followed it up with a win in the women's 57-60 kg quarterfinal over Welsh Charlene Jones. Though the Welsh girl won the first round on points, Sarita came back well to win the next three rounds of two minutes each to clinch the contest 3:1. The Indian will play her last four bouts Friday against Mozambique's Maria Machongua. Attacking Manipuri boxer Devendro then won his men's 49 kg last-eight bout, defeating Scottish Aqeel Ahmed 3:0. The 22-year-old notched up perfect scores of 30 from the judges in the last two rounds.

Devendro will face Welsh Ashley Williams in the semis Friday. Mandeep Jangra was lucky to not even fight in the men's 69 kg quarterfinal as his Australian opponent Daniel Lewis gave him a walkover due to medical reasons. The Haryana pugilist will next take on Northern Ireland's Steven Donnelly. To finish the day, Indian Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh also won his men's 75 kg quarterfinal bout against Aaron Prince of Trinidad and Tobago 3:0. The losing semifinalists in the discipline are assured of a bronze medal as the winners proceed to the gold medal final match.

Dipa first Indian woman to clinch Commonwealth Games gymnastics medal

Glasgow (IANS): Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian woman and the second person from the country to clinch a historic Commonwealth Games medal in artistic gymnastics when she won the women's vault bronze at the SSE Hydro here Thursday. Ashish Kumar had won India's maiden gymnastics medals in CWG when he scalped the men's vault silver and men's floor bronze four years ago in New Delhi. England's Claudia

Fragapane won the gold with an average score of 14.633 while Canada's Elsabeth Black took home the silver with 14.433. Agartala-born Dipa got the bronze with an average score of 14.366. The 20-year-old had scored a mere 13.633 points in Vault 1, the lowest out of eight competitors in the final. However, in a remarkable comeback, Dipa scored the highest in Vault 2 with 15.100 to bring up her average to

14.366. Earlier in the day, Ashish had finished sixth in the men's floor final where he took bronze in 2010. With a score of 15.533 points, England's Max Whitlock clinched the gold while Canada's Scott Morgan (15.133) took the silver. New Zealander David Bishop (14.55) won the bronze. The 23-year-old Ashish finished sixth out of eight competitors with a score of 13.8 points.

Dawn of The Planet of The Apes (PG) ****

Smart scripts don't come out too often in Hollywood. Leave it to 20th Century Fox to shake things up considerably with Dawn of The Planer of The Apes. Superior to the stellar remake of the

original 1968 blockbuster that came out a few years ago this new version is taking people's breath away at Cineplex odeon arena across B.C. Ominous is the tone set right off the bat as a bril-

liant opening tells us that Earth is in a real bind. Thanks to a deadly virus few humans are left standing. Ground zero is San Francisco. Hardship confronts the remaining humans who are led by a

man called Dreyfus. Real life bad boy Gary Oldman tries to stay afloat but he's really no match for those unruly forest dwelling neighbours who are equally well organized. Deep in the forest live the apes who are led by the intelligent Caesar. Like the humans there is a pecking order among these animals and rival-

ries ensue. A contest of wills emerge between the two species that blossom into a battle royal. Thanks to a clever script that shows both species have a whole range of emotions Dawn of The Planet of the Apes is insightful. You feel a real connection with the gorillas with some human contact memorable.

Some surprises will grip you as will the work of Jason Clarke who stands tall as Malcolm. Director Matt Reeves brings forth an epic tale that for 130 minutes is gripping. Exciting, emotional and entertaining throughout Dawn of The Planet of The Apes is a well thought out adventure worth seeing. Even the 3-D effects look good and work for a change putting you front and centre in the conflict.

Q&A with Akshay Kumar: ‘I’ll do whatever my fans want me to’

BOLLYWOOD superstar Akshay Kumar talks about his forthcoming film, Entertainment, which releases on August 8. Q: Your previous movies are much more serious than ‘Entertainment’. Do you think your fans will enjoy it? A: To be honest, I’ll do whatever my fans want me to! Even though they praised me a lot for Holiday, they said they can’t wait for

Entertainment to release. I think the key to happy fans is giving them a little bit of everything, which I am trying to do at the moment. If my fans are satisfied with me – that is all I need because I would not be where I am today without them. Q: Some people might say that actors are supposed to be trendsetters. Do you agree?

ENERGY AUTOMOTIVE LTD.

• Computer Analysis • Propane Work • Engine Brakes • Tune-up • Transmission • Clutches • Air Care • Mufflers We Can Repair Anything!

A: Not at all. In my opinion the real trendsetters are the viewers. We (actors) might think that something could work but if the audience says no – that is the end of it. All we can do then is just try and adapt. Q: Did you ever see yourself acting with a dog? A: Not really but that’s the beauty of acting! You can never predict who your new co-stars will be, two-legged or four. It’s fantastic to be given the opportunity to transition from character to character and to be able to mix it up. He’s definitely one of my favourite co-stars Q: Entertainment is not the first movie where you’re working with a debutant director. Do you enjoy it? A: Absolutely! Because they are still new at their job they love to experiment and improvise – and I love that too! Especially if you’re working on a comedy you need to have someone who is open to suggestions, witty and not afraid to take risks.

Q: Is it true that you lip-synced to a female voice for one of the Entertainment songs? A: Yes, it is true – I just could not resist it. From my point of view, if you are making an out-andout comedy why stop at anything? You can only succeed if you take risks. Q: You have also launched quite a few newcomers. Why is this? A: I believe in giving people opportunities. I think everyone deserves a chance to be noticed and appreciated. Also it is my way of giving back to the industry.

Q: It took a little while before the industry and the audiences started taking you seriously as a star. How would you describe your journey? A: My journey has been both difficult and fantastic at the same time, but I guess that’s part of life. It may have taken time for people to accept that I was more than just a struggling actor. I was also very determined to succeed and you can never achieve success without working towards it and adopting a diligent, positive and honest approach to this. I was Akshay Kumar, born with nothing but good parents and God’s hand on my shoulder!

Q: Did you enjoy working with Tamannaah? A: Tamannaah is a great actress. She’s a talented, fully of energy and a thorough professional. She’s got a great attitude, and extremely charming, so glad she has decided to join Bollywood!

Q: Tell us a bit more about ‘Entertainment’? A: I play a character that will be seen competing with a dog to inherit his father's fortune. On knowing that his father has left his property to his faithful pet, ‘Entertainment’, my character obviously tries to get rid of the dog, but a sudden turn of events changes the course of the story.

Q: Did you have to prepare for your first meeting with Junior? A: I had to rehearse a lot before I was even introduced to Junior. I must say I have never improvised as much as I did in this film! Junior was absolutely unpredictable – one could never know what he is about to do, you just had to follow his emotions. Everything I knew about acting had to be thrown out of the window; we just had to do whatever made Junior happy and comfortable.

Q: Did you enjoy working with Junior? A: It was an absolute pleasure! I have never done anything like this in my life. I really hope that this movie will not only change Junior’s life but all other dogs’ lives too. If this film can make a positive change, then I will be over the moon.

Q: What’s your favourite scene from the movie? A: I don't really have a favourite scene. When you are shooting with a dog all the scenes are funny in their own way.

I'll never work for free: Emraan Hashmi

EMRAAN Hashmi, who is looking forward to his next "Raja Natwarlal", seems to have a practical approach towards his acting job. He is not willing to slog for free, but at the same time he clarifies money is not the sole purpose behind accepting a project. "Money is always at the heart of the thing, I won't do a film for free. Money is important, but money is not the sole purpose," Emraan told IANS. In his over a decade of acting journey, he had hits like "Murder", "Raaz" and "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai" and misses such as "Footpath", "Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji" and "Ghanchakkar". He feels that "if you do a film for money, it will never work because there are films where I get double the money but I don't end up doing it..." This is so because the actor prefers good "script" and feels his movie should be total "paisa vasool". "So it's not all about money. Money is important but to a certain point. You need to make good films and keep the audience happy. If the audience won't go out clapping after watching 'Raja Natwarlal', it would be cheating," said Emraan. So far, the actor attempted various genres, however, his experiment with comedy thriller "Ghanchakkar" failed. He admits his fans want to see him in massy movies with a dollop of sex. He said: "They do and that's why I am giving them 'Raja Natwarlal'. They were obviously disappointed (with 'Ghanchakkar'), but it was something that I had to do. But I will bring something to 'Raja Natwarlal' after 'Ghanchakkar' and you will see that on the screen." "But if I do only films like 'Raja Natwarlal', I won't grow as an actor. So, creatively I need to grow and do something else that helps me grow as an actor." In "Raja Natwarlal" Emraan is working with filmmaker Kunal Deshmukh for the fourth time, and says they enjoy a good camaraderie on the sets. "This is my fourth film with him, we both understand each other, creatively . (IANS)

Salman's Eid pledge: To help 100 kids with heart condition BOLLYWOOD superstar Salman Khan has announced that his Being Human (BH) charitable organisation will help “100 genuine patients” suffering from heart condition by providing them free treatment. Kicked by the "Kick" success, Salman took to twitter to make the announcement. “If any kids on FB ya twitter who has a heart condition n can't afford to get it treated, BH vil (will) get 100 genuine patients treated,” he tweeted Tuesday. Initially, he told his followers to share details on the social networking sites, but later realised that there would be “confusion”, so shared email address - beinghumanemail@gmail.com - to get in touch with the organisation. A month back, he had used the microblogging site to help his fans and others find jobs through his site beinghumanworkshop.com. An initiative by Salman, "Being Human", a charitable organisation, works for the betterment of the underprivileged. (IANS)

2014 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 Bluetec: Premium SUV is still formidable Auto review by Veeno Dewan The Mercedes-Benz ethos when it comes to the design of the latest GL350 is more of the same, but improved. The conservative, timeless, impressive and expensive looks are now updated, but

you won’t find a plethora of gimmicky twisting curves and cheap looking bling on its imposing flanks. It is rare you will not see a bright yellow, flame orange or bright green Mercedes- Benz SUV. You see the Mercedes-Benz SUVs appeal to a certain type of

buyer, well-off, yes, demanding of quality and reputation, but also seeking discretion and understatement. You can see this from the predominant color choices when it comes to buyers paint choices; solid silvers, sharp black, metallic greys…the colors of

expensive metals dominate. Everyone knows these vehicles are not cheap and with so many options most people will rarely know what buyers have actually paid for these expensive SUVs. The safety systems are worth taking about as Mercedes-Benz equips the GL as standard with: ABS brakes, brake assist, stability (ESP) and traction (ASR) and 4Matic all-wheel drive. On the road Attention Assist alerts drowsy drivers when it detects erratic driving. Bi-xenon headlamps also turn with steering to aid illumination whilst Passive Lane Keeping Assist warns drivers if they cross over the lane markings. Meanwhile Passive Blind Spot Assist warns of vehicles in driver blind spots and Collision Prevention Assist warns of possible collision if it detects too close proximity to vehicles ahead or cars following distances to the car ahead that could lead to a collision. A clever Pre-Safe mode sens-

es and primes in-cabin safety features like seatbelts, seats and windows if it detects the risk of an impending collision. Distronic adaptive cruise control and active lane keeping assist use stability control and power brakes to keep the vehicle in lane if warnings are missed or ignored On the road the GL 350 Bluetec’s excellent V6 turbodiesel engine is a stand out with most efficient torque output from the available from the 1,600 to 2,400 rpm range. The slick, sevenspeed (4Matic) transmission is adept at sending power smoothly via all four wheels (4Matic). The well calibrated sequential-shift automatic transmission also helps with fuel efficiency helping the 3.0-litre V6 rated at 10.9 L/100km in the city and 7.6 on the highway. The high seating position, safe feeling cabin and good visibility make the big GL 350 a pleasure to drive with its comfortable seating. Good,

stable handling and light steering also make the GL 350 easy to drive around town and thanks to the amazing 360-degree camera view, Parktronic and Active parking assist the GL is easy to park. You simply cannot go wrong if you buy the GL 350 Blue tech. The sum of all its qualities plus the bullet proof, fuel efficient diesel V6 engine make it a no-brainer. And it is not priced so much higher the gas engined version that it will deter buyers. Of course buyers will be tempted in most cases- if not all to load up on the pricy options. Still driver and ownership experience as with any Mercedes- Benz is high, depreciation is low and so make buying and owning a GL might attractive proposition. Highly recommended. One of the best SUV’s on the planet. Auto review by Veeno Dewan 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec priced from $74,900

2014 Lexus CT 200h- luxury Sporty hybrid is priced lower than last year!

Auto review by Veeno Dewan

New for 2014, the Lexus CT 200h compact sports hatchback now wears the signature Lexus ‘Spindle’ Grille that reinforces the vehicle’s low front profile and wide, sporty stance. Additional updates for 2014 include new front and rear bumper designs, added aero-stabilizing fins, new 10-spoke 16” aluminum alloy wheel design, a redesigned rear spoiler, a shark-fin antenna and LED license plate lamps. I have to say the CT200h is one of my favorite vehicles as it looks unique, offers four doors and a sleek, stylish hatchback design and is very good on fuel. The Lexus name plat adds a degree of cachet to what is a very impressive package. Inside, the driver-focused cabin seats five passengers and is enhanced to be more pleasing to the eye and more welcoming to the touch. The driver now benefits from a new steering wheel, a new shift lever design, extendable sun visors, a tire pressure monitoring system and a switch to turn off the Traction Control system for more direct control on closed tracks. Additional enhanced features for 2014 include the available Lexus Display Audio system, including the world’s first use of bamboofiber loudspeakers. Other features include: steering wheel-mounted audio system controls; Bluetooth

connectivity with steering wheel-mounted controls; Integrated Sirius XM Satellite Radio; USB audio input jack; and more. Offering best-in-class fuel economy (combined 4.6L/100km); the 2014 Lexus CT 200h is powered by an advanced and proven Lexus Hybrid Drive system, which combines a 1.8L fourcylinder gasoline engine with a high-torque electric drive motor for 134 net horsepower. Four drive modes can be selected by the driver including Normal, Sport, ECO, and EV. The latter allows the CT 200h to operate for short distances on battery power alone. The CT 200h’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine and electric motor is the same as found in the current-generation Toyota Prius. The drive motor uses electrical power from the battery pack or the enginedriven motor, and turns the front wheels. The battery pack is located under the

rear cargo area, ahead of the rear axle. Power output is the same – 134 horsepower. The ‘Silver Lining’ metallic CT 200h with Premium Package we tested (MSRP starting at $37,750) added 17 inch alloy wheels, a power moon roof, LED headlamps and fog lamps, a 10-speaker Lexus Display Audio System with 7” display and audio controller; leather seat surfaces, a driver’s seat memory system linked to the exterior mirrors, reverse autotilting mirrors, integrated garage door opener, a backup camera, rain sensing wipers and more. Total price of our well- equipped premium package model with all options came to $37,750 plus: Federal Excise AC levy, tire levy AMVIC fee, Freight and PDI ($1,995) for a final tally of $39,871. Interior wise, the Lexus cabin features metal-type accent trim on the dash, the doors and on the three spokes of the steering wheel. Leather stitching on

the steering wheel and console also add finesse. The dash and instruments are well designed with easy to read gauges and decent controls and ergonomics. The driver can monitor the hybrid action with a special display. Like the Prius, the hybrid drive system in the CT 200h has four drive modes: Normal, Eco, Sport and EV (electric vehicle). Normal

mode offer a longer throttle while Eco mode adjusts air conditioning settings and practically puts the throttle to sleep for the best possible fuel economy. Sport mode provides quicker more direct electric power steering settings. EV mode is ideal for low speeds for example in park lots. Having driven the Prius on many times the driving sensation of the CT 200h is

ice ctor Excellent Serv Ladies Instru s te a R w at Lo Available ! d e te n ra a u G

familiar and it is an easy comfortable car to drive- so no issues there at all. The actual fuel economy you achieve will of course depend very much on you driving style, but I found the figures to be pretty close to the estimates. Careful driving will in think result in even better figures Overall the CT 200h is a joy to drive, simple, relaxing and with no issues to speak of. The CT 200h offers good looks, four doors, hatchback versatility and a hybrid drive train for greater fuel efficiency. At the base price this is a bargain whilst the wellequipped Premium model is a very tempting proposition for those who demand a little more in taste.

2014 Lexus CT200h base priced from $30,950. Price as tested with options, AC Tax, freight and PDI - $39,871.

11 Ways to Live Longer 1. Exercise It’s no secret that physical activity is good for you. Exercise helps you maintain a healthy body weight and lowers your blood pressure, both of which contribute to heart health and a reduced risk of heart disease–the top worldwide cause of death. 2. Drink in moderation I know you’re probably picturing a glass of red wine right now, but recent research suggests that indulging in one to three glasses of any type of alcohol every day may help to increase longevity. Studies have found that heavy drinkers as well as abstainers seem to have a higher risk of early mortality than moderate drinkers. 3. Reduce stress in your life Stress causes your body to release a hormone called cortisol. At high levels, this hormone can increase blood pressure and cause storage of abdominal fat, both of which can lead to an increased risk of heart disease. 4. Watch less television A 2008 study found that people who watch six hours of television per day will likely die an average of 4.8 years earlier than those who don’t. It also found that, after the age of 25, every hour of television watched decreases life expectancy by 22 minutes. Television promotes

inactivity and disengagement from the world, both of which can shorten your lifespan. 5. Eat less red meat Red meat consumption is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and cancer. Swapping out your steaks for healthy proteins, like fish, may help to increase longevity. If you can’t stand the idea of a steak-free life, reducing your consumption to less than two to three servings a week can still incur health benefits. 6. Don’t smoke This isn’t exactly a revelation. As you probably well know, smoking significantly increases your risk of cancer. 7. Socialize Studies suggest that having social relationships promotes longevity. Although scientists are unsure of the reasons behind

CRIME STOPPERS

WANTED

this, they speculate that socializing leads to increased self esteem as well as peer pressure to maintain health. 8. Eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids Omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of heart disease and perhaps even Alzheimer’s disease. Salmon and walnuts are two of the best sources of Omega-3s. 9. Be optimistic Studies suggest that optimists are at a lower risk for heart disease and, generally, live longer than pessimists. Researchers speculate that optimists have a healthier approach to life in general–exercising more, socializing, and actively seeking out medical advice. Thus, their risk of early mortality is lower. 10. Laugh often Laughter reduces the levels of stress hormones, like cortisol, in your body. High levels of these hormones can weaken your immune system. 11. Drink coffee Studies have found a link between coffee consumption and longer life. Although the reasons for this aren’t entirely clear, coffee’s high levels of antioxidants may play a role. Remember, though, drowning your cup of joe in sugar and whipped cream could counter whatever health benefits it may hold.
