The man with the golden shirt!
GUARANTEED Absolute Lowest Prices !
Yeola (Maharashtra) (IANS): James Bond's rival had a golden gun. This school dropout is acquiring a golden shirt that weighs four kilograms and costs a staggering Rs.1.30 crore ($214,000). But then, Pankaj Parakh, a school dropout who made his fortune from his garment fabrication business and who is a corporator to boot, is no stranger to opulence. Whenever he ventures on to the streets in Yeola, 260 km from Mumbai, women stare at him and men glare at him as he is adorned with gold jewellery weighing at least twothree kg. Now, at a special function on his 45th birthday Friday, Parakh will wear his latest acquisition at a huge gathering that will include the likes of Maharashtra Tourism Minister Chhagan Bhujbal of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and around a dozen legislators of different parties and celebs. With the shirt and its seven gold buttons, Parakh hopes to enter the Guinness World Records and the Limca Book of Records. "Gold has always fascinated me since I was five years old and studying in school. Over the years, I have become passionate about this royal metal. I have got this special shirt stitched to mark my 45th birthday this Friday," Parakh told IANS in an exclusive tete-a-tete here. The shirt was designed by Bafna

Jewellers of Nashik, 85 km away, and meticulously executed by Shanti Jewellers at Parel in Mumbai, where a team of around 20 select artisans spent 3,200 hours over the past two months to 'stitch' it. Parakh, who took delivery in Mumbai, offered a sneak peek of his treasured shirt and even wore it for a darshan of the city's famed Siddhivinayak Temple before posing for some pictures near the temple, while curious onlookers watched from a distance. He said that the gold used in the shirt is of 18-22 carat purity, without any mixture of any other

metals - and the entire deal is properly accounted for (an assurance to snoopy tax sleuths!). Though made of gold, the shirt is fully flexible and comfortable, absolutely smooth and harmless and with a thin cloth lining the inside to avoid rubbing the body. Besides, it can be washed and hung-dried, and if torn or damaged, can be repaired and modified with a lifetime guarantee of durability, Parakh said. Recounting his love for gold, Parakh said that in his youth, he could not afford much as he left school after Class 8 and plunged into the family garments business in Yeola, a town of some 60,000 where he is an NCP corporator. "Yet, for my marriage 23 years ago, many guests considered me an embarrassment as I sported more gold than the bride," he recalled with a chuckle. Over the years, after taking care of all his family's needs - a good house looked after by wife Pratibha and higher education for his two doting sons Siddharth (22) and Rahul (19), both now in college Parakh likes to plough back his excess income to finance his passion for acquiring a gilded edge. "My family is hardly impressed or interested in my love for gold. They just ignore and accept it as a part of domestic life. But the rest of my extended family thinks I am weird," Parakh laughed.

Give Modi time to turn the economy around: Ratan Tata Kolkata (IANS): Asserting that Narendra Modi has a proven track record, Tata Sons' chairman emeritus Ratan Tata Wednesday said the new government should be given more time to turn around India's economy. Par ticipating at an interactive programme here, Tata said he was hopeful of Prime Minister Modi making the economy growth-oriented, despite it being a huge task. "Modi has a track record of being a doer, and what he has done in Gujarat is there for everyone to see. He has a huge task nevertheless in turning around the economy to growth oriented rather than control oriented," he said. "We will have to give him a little more time. But I am very hopeful that he will turn things around," Ratan Tata said "We all have to be very hopeful of the new government, because since 1994 we have had a coalition government, where at times it had been difficult holding together the coalition partners," Tata said. The former Tata Sons' chairman also thanked Modi, who - as the then chief minister of Gujarat - had given him a "new home" when the company had to relocate a car manufacturing unit from West Bengal following "hostile" antiacquisition movement led by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee. "I am thankful to Modi for giving me a new home," Tata said about the relocation of its Nano car project from Singur in West Bengal's Hooghly district to Sanand in Gujarat.

Kolkata (IANS): Said to be considering a personal investment in e-commerce firm Snapdeal, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata Wednesday said e-tailing was the next hottest thing in the market. "E-tailing gives you access to a wide range of products which you can buy sitting in the comfort of your homes. You buy things using your phones or computers and even return them if you don't like. The Tata Sons' former chairman also said the group, which has set up the Tata Centre for Technology and Design in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will be reentering the education scene. "We are looking to re-
enter the education sector, partly with distance education and partly in physical campus," he said. Tata, who transformed India's largest private sector conglomerate with a string of marquee global acquisitions, said acquiring British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover was a courageous decision. On challenges during his tenure as chairman, Tata picked out the labour unrest in its Pune plant and the relocation of the Nano car plant from West Bengal to Gujarat.

Rahul Gandhi leads Congress MPs' protest in Lok Sabha
New Delhi (IANS): A combative Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday led party MPs to the speaker's podium to protest
against the government not agreeing to an immediate discussion on the increasing communal clashes in the country. The Lok Sabha witnessed continuous protests from opposition parties including the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal over their demand for discussion on the issue. As soon as the house met, the opposition parties led by the Congress raised slogans demanding a debate on the communal incidents and sought introduction of the bill against communal violence. Minutes later, Gandhi led a group of Congress parliamentarians to the speaker's podium, following which Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the house. Former union minister M. The Canadian Bookkeepers Association Veerapa Moily told IANS that it was (CBA) offers you the opportunity of the first time that Rahul Gandhi had gone near the speaker's podibecoming a Registered Professional um to protest. Bookkeeper. "This reflected anguish of Rahul Gandhi against ruling party's adamancy," Moily said. Talking to mediapersons after coming out of the house, Gandhi accused the speaker of not allowing the opposition to speak. "There is a mood in parliament that only one man's voice counts for anything in this country and only one voice is being heard," he added. After the house proceedings resumed following its brief adjournment during question hour, opposition members resumed their protest. Congress and some other opposition parties continuously raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. At one time, BJP members stood up to protest against opposition members gesticulating near the speaker's podium. Sumitra Mahajan, however, told them to take their seats, saying that she was capable of dealing with the situation. She asked leader of Congress in the house Mallikarjun Kharge to speak and told opposition members to take their seats. Kharge said they had met her in the morning to demand an adjournment motion on the rising incidents of communal violence in the country which was affecting life and security of people. He said they were asked to raise the matter after the question hour. Kharge's remarks that "riots were spreading everywhere" drew strong opposition from the treasury benches. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu refuted Kharge's allegation. "They are frustrated. This is highly objectionable. There is peace in the country. There should be peace in the house. The country is safe and secure under leadership
of Narendra Modi," he said. Naidu said the government was willing to discuss the issue but procedures have to be followed. "Give notice, we are ready," he said. The speaker asked Kharge to be specific in his remarks and tell the place where incidents had taken place. Amid the standoff, the Congress and some other opposition members came near the speaker's chair raising slogans. Sumitra Mahajan said that if Congress had given a notice, the matter will be discussed in the business advisory committee for fixing time for discussion. Kharge said he had already given notice and said that either discussion should take place or a time be fixed for it. Rahul Gandhi, who had gone out of the house briefly, also joined the protests and raised slogans against the government. Congress and other members raised slogans such as "We want justice", "Hosh me aaoo (come to your senses)." The speaker conducted the proceedings of the house amid protests from opposition members and adjourned the house till 2 p.m. Members from NCP and Aam Aadmi Party also got up from their seats to in support of demand for discussion on incidents of communal violence in the country. Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders kept discussing with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who was seated, as they protested against the government.

Haryana gurdwara row: SC says maintain status quo
New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Thursday directed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee to maintain status quo in respect of all the 52 gurdwaras in Haryana as of 2.30 p.m. Thursday. Referring to the home ministry note shown to it by Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi in respect of developments in the matter, the apex court bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph said: "Having regard to above development, we are satisfied that status quo in regard to subject gurdwaras in schedule I, II and III of the impugned Act shall be maintained by all the concerned." "We accordingly direct the SGPC and HSGMC to maintain status quo as of 2.30 p.m. today (Thursday) in all respect", the court said. The petitioner Harbhajan Singh - a member of SGPC from Kurukshetra - has challenged the vires and the constitutional validity of Haryana Sikh Gurdwara (Management) Act, 2014. The court directed SGPC and HSGMC to open separate bank accounts to deposit the offerings made by devotees in
these 52 gurdwaras which are in their possession and management. Directing the next hearing of the matter on Aug 25, Chief Justice Lodha said: "Time is a great healer. Wait for some time. Proceed with cool head and argue dispassionately and forcefully. Law and order will not be disturbed." Of the 52 gurdwaras in respect of which the status quo has to be maintained, eight are of historical importance, 17 get offerings of Rs.20 lakh per annum each and the remaining gurdwaras get less than Rs.20 lakh per annum each. At the outset of the hearing in the afternoon, senior counsel Raju Ramachandran appearing for Haryana told the court about the 2002 judgment of the Punjab and Haryana High Court which was upheld by the apex court in 2008, in support of submission that Haryana assembly had the power and competence to enact the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara (Management) Act, 2014, and sought time till Friday to place documents before it. Raju Ramachandran said this while addressing the court query whether the Haryana assembly had the power to enact the law which is now being sought to be invalidated
by petitioner Harbhajan Singh, and what was the source of that power and its legitimacy. Appearing for petitioner Harbhajan Singh, senior counsel Harish Salve told the court that Haryana assembly had no power to enact the law under challenge as it was in conflict with central legislation viz. the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925, and the Inter-State Corporation Act, 1957. Salve told the court that under Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, by which Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were carved out, the SGPC was accorded the status of an inter-state corporation. The court was told that under the Inter-State Corporation Act, 1957, Haryana was obligated to approach the Centre for its nod before going forward with the enactment. "If (the newly carved out) State wants to break away from the (inter-state corporation based in the parent State) then under the Inter-State Corporation Act, 1957, it has to expressly take the permission of the Centre," Salve contended. As Salve argued that the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara (Management) Act was unconstitutional, the court asked him: "Show us under which power they have enacted the (Haryana Sikh Gurdwara

Government of India Act, 1919. Rohatgi told the court that Centre had asked Haryana to roll back the law by asking governor to withdraw his assent to the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara (Management) Act, 2014. "Today Union (central government) is a step

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2015 to be held in Gandhinagar New Delhi (IANS): The next edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) would be held in Gandhinagar as 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the return of Mahatma Gandhi, the "greatest pravasi", the Lok Sabha was informed Wednesday.
"It has been decided to celebrate the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), 2015, in a befitting manner," Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs Gen. V.K. Singh (retd) said. The PBD conventions provide the largest platform to persons
of Indian origin (PIOs) and NonResident Indians for exchanging views and networking on matters of common interest. He said continuous efforts are made to make it more significant and beneficial to them. The PBD is celebrated Jan 9
every year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of country. The date was chosen since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa, led India's freedom struggle and
changed the lives of Indians forever, according to the website of the ministry. The 12th PBD was held in January this year in New Delhi. There are 25 million people of Indian origin residing outside India.
19 Indian students in Malaysia to be sent back home
New Delhi (IANS): Nineteen Indian students who had entered Malaysia with false work visas have approached
the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur to urge early repatriation to India, the Lok Sabha was informed
Wednesday. Minister of State for External Affairs Gen. V.K. Singh (retd) said emergency certificates have
been issued to the 19 students by the Indian mission as the students said their passports had been kept by the employer.
"Our mission is constantly facilitating various formalities of Malaysian immigration and closely following up the matter with the Malaysian authorities. The stay and other arrangements for these students in Malaysia are currently being looked after by the principal of the SES College, Thane,
where these students are reported to be studying," he said. Gen. V.K. Singh said the external affairs ministry through its mission in Kuala Lumpur - will continue to render all possible assistance in sending these people back to India at the earliest and on completion of necessary formalities by the Malaysian authorities.
Indian steel baron's bid to buy mountain in Britain creates uproar London (IANS): Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has made a bid to buy a mountain in Britain sparking protests from the locals, media reported. The London-based NRI businessman has bid over 1.75 million pounds ($2.94 million) to purchase "Blencathra" mountain, also known as Saddleback, lying in Northern fells mountain range in Britain's Lake district, the dailymail reported Saturday. The Earl of Lonsdale, the local division, has reportedly accepted the offer and said he has been forced to sell the land to settle a 9 million pounds tax bill. However, the locals have criticised the mountain sale move and have lodged their protest to prevent the historic 2,850 feet peak from falling into the hands of a foreign landowner. Lakshmi Mittal, CEO of world's largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal and one of the richest Indians, also owns two of the most expensive houses in London and has a large stake in a
premier football club. A protest group named as "Friends of Blencathra" has lodged a counter bid using a substantial sum donated by British outdoor clothing label Berghaus. The land sale would take six months to be finalised because the local authority, Eden District Council, is obliged to allow the group time to raise enough funds. The Friends of Blencathra have offered 300,000 pounds less than what the Earl wants to earn from Blencathra, the report said. Debbie Cosgrove, who chairs the group, said: "If someone buys the mountain it is unlikely they have charitable aims." However, Martin Knowles, a local resident, said the buyer (Mittal) wants to preserve the mountain and has the money to pay farmers to repair the footpaths and wells. "Whereas if the Friends scrape together enough cash, they will have no money to preserve it," Knowles added.

HSGPC row: Warring Sikh groups agree on panel to resolve issue
Chandigarh (IANS): Senior leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on one side and the newly-created Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) Monday evening agreed to set up a panel to look into all aspects of control of Haryana gurdwaras to resolve the issue. The meeting between both sides, held in Haryana's Jagadhari town, 100 km from here, came even as the siege by HSGPC leaders for the gurdwara in Kurukshetra town continued for the third day Monday. "After prolonged discussion over the issue, it was unanimously resolved that a committee comprising of five Skh intellectuals should be constituted which will deliberate on the issues in detail and suggest the solution keeping in view direction of the Shri Akali Takht Sahib," a spokesman of the Akali Dal said here. "The president of the SGPC, being the head of the apex body for the management of sikh shrines, was unanimously authorized to nominate the members of the committee," the spokesman said. "After the cancellation of the Panthic convention on the order of Jathedar Shri Akali Takht Sahib, a first meeting to sort out the issue between both the faction was held today at Jagadhari," he said. SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, Akali Dal secretary general Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, general secretaries Balwinder Singh Bhunder and Prem Singh Chandumajra and party secretary and spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema were present in the meeting along with former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Commitee's
15 in fray for Punjab by-poll
Chandigarh (IANS): Former union minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur is among 15 candidates in the fray for byelections to two Punjab assembly seats - Patiala and Talwandi Sabo - to be held later this month. Preneet Kaur, wife of Amritsar's Lok Sabha member and former chief minister Amarinder Singh, lost from Patiala Lok Sabha constituency by around 20,000 votes to cardiologist Dharam Vira Gandhi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The Patiala assembly seat was vacated by Amarinder Singh after he was elected to the Lok Sabha. He defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's Arun Jaitley, who is now the union finance and defence minister, by over one lakh votes. Preneet Kaur faces seven other candidates in the assembly bypoll. They include Bhagwan Dass (Shiromani Akali Dal) and Harjeet Singh (Aam Aadmi Party). The Talwandi Sabo assembly seat in southwest Bathinda district fell vacant earlier this year after sitting Congress legislator Jeet Mohinder Sidhu quit his seat as well as the Congress party. He later joined the ruling Akali Dal and is now the party's candidate from the constituency. Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) V.K. Singh said voting for the by-elections in both the constituencies would be held Aug 21. Counting of votes will take place Aug 25.
former presidents Parmjit Singh Sarna and Harwinder Singh Sarna, HSGPC members Bhupinder Singh Asandh, Joga Singh, Harpal Singh Pali and Sikh scholar Prithipal Singh Kapoor. The Akal Takht had, last week, intervened in the stand-off between both sides and indicated that it wanted to resolve the issue of management of Sikh shrines in Haryana. Members of the newly-constituted HSGPC continued their siege of Kurukshetra's Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi on the third day of their bid to take over the Sikh shrine. Punjab's ruling Akali Dal and the SGPC are locked in a bitter controversy with Haryana's Bhupinder Singh Hooda government over the creation of the HSGPC. On June 11, the Haryana assembly had passed a bill under which a new committee would be set up to manage gurdwaras in the state. The Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management) Bill, 2014, got the assent of the state governor June 14. The SGPC, the mini-parliament of Sikh religious affairs, which controls gurdwaras
across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, will lose control over gurdwaras in Haryana with the new law. The SGPC, which has a Rs.950 crore
annual budget, controls majority of the gurdwaras in Punjab, including the holiest of all Sikh shrines 'Harmandar Sahib' (popularly known as Golden Temple) in Amritsar.

Sporting honours: Punjab left far behind by Harayana Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab may be acting like the big brother to Haryana, but
when it comes to honouring and rewarding sportspersons from the state who
earn international laurels, it seems to be lagging far behind. Medal winners from
Punjab are now ruing the fact that they are virtually "losers" even after winning medals at international events. The comparison that Punjab's sportspersons are making is with those from neighbouring Haryana, who are encouraged to win medals at international events and end up with cash rewards running into millions of rupees, and gifts of luxury cars, smart-phones, good jobs and even good supplies of desi ghee. In the last few years, Haryana's Bhupinder Singh Hooda government has heaped honours and rewards on its achiever sportspersons, a large number of them women. Even
players like badminton champion Saina Nehwal and shooter Gagan Narang, both from Hyderabad but with family connections in Haryana, have ended up with huge cash rewards and other freebies. Fresh from her bronze medal winning achievement at the Glasgow Commonwealth games, wrestler Navjot Kaur wants the Punjab government to learn how to encourage players to achieve more. JASBIR SINGH BADH Despite the happiness of jsbIr isMG b`D wining in the 69-kg wrestling event, Navjot, who hails from a village in the border ACCOUNTING SERVICES district of Tarn Taran near Amritsar, says that players from Punjab are not treated at par with their counter#1393-20800, Westminster Hwy, Richmond parts from Haryana. Judo player Navjot Chana of Hoshiarpur district, who won a silver at Glasgow, is also upset. "Despite repeated efforts, I have not got my due. I continue to work as an ASI (assistant sub-inspector) in the police. I should have been a DSP by now (in Haryana)," Chana said. Embarrassed by the outburst of Punjab players, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said that players from the state would soon be honoured. In Haryana, which is heading for assembly polls later this year, Hooda is all prepared to honour the state's medal-winners, having announced substantial cash rewards for them. Gold medal winners at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games will now get cash rewards of Rs.2 crore ($327,000) and Rs.1 crore, up from Rs.25 lakh and Rs.15 lakh respectively. Silver and bronze medal winners at the Asian Games would now get Rs.1 crore and Rs.50 lakh instead of Rs.15 lakh and Rs.10 lakh respectively. Silver and bronze medal winners at the Commonwealth Games will get Rs.50 lakh and Rs.25 lakh instead of Rs.10 lakh and Rs.5 lakh. The Haryana government has already announced rewards of Rs.5 crore for the winners of gold, Rs.3 crore for silver and Rs.2 crore for bronze medal winners in the Olympics from Haryana. The Hooda government gave huge cash rewards to all Haryana players after the 2012 London Olympics. Some players even got luxury Audi cars, LED TVs and other goodies. Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who lives in Delhi but whose family hails from Haryana, got a cash reward of Rs.1.5 crore for his silver medal at the Olympics, while wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, badminton player Saina Nehwal and shooter Gagan Narang got Rs.1 crore each for their bronze medals. Yogeshwar Dutt additionally was given Rs.51 lakh by the Haryana Police, his employer. Over 25 other participants from Haryana got cash rewards ranging from Rs.11 lakh to Rs.31 lakh each. "Other states and leaders should learn from the way that Bhupinder Singh Hooda is promoting sportspersons. The players from Haryana have more fire to win and the results are showing. This will encourage the younger generation to take to sports as a career," Sushil Kumar said. "We want to encourage sporting culture among youth. That is why we have enhanced the rewards for players," Hooda told IANS.

19 Punjabis return from Iraq, no word on hostages Chandigarh (IANS): Although 19 Punjabis returned to India by a special flight Tuesday, there is still no word on the whereabouts of another 40 Punjabi men taken hostage by militants in conflict-torn Iraq, officials said.
The 19 men were received at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi by Punjab Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal and other officials. A spokesperson from the Chief Minister's Office said the officials ensured
smooth clearance at immigration for the men returning from Iraq as they were without proper documents. "The officers have been deputed to ensure that none of the Punjabis who returned from Iraq face any sort of harassment at
the hands of authorities, because majority of Indians returning from Iraq were not having valid documents and immigration papers," the spokesman said. However, the Punjab government said it had no information on the whereabouts of 40 Punjabi men taken
hostage in Iraq's Mosul town by militants June 11. The state government has urged the external affairs ministry to ensure their safe and early return to India. The spokesman said more Punjabis were expected to return Wednesday and two
Punjab government officials have been deputed 24x7 at the airport to facilitate their return and immigration clearance. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has announced financial assistance of Rs.20,000 per month for the families of the 40 Punjabis in Mosul.

Agartala (IANS): The Tripura government accorded a grand reception Monday to Dipa Karmakar, the first Indian woman and second gymnast from the country to clinch a Commonwealth Games medal in artistic gymnastics. Hundreds of sports lovers, officials, followers, admirers and well-wishers received Dipa on her arrival at the Agartala airport from New Delhi before a motorcade of hundreds of vehicles and twowheelers went around the capital city Agartala and held a huge reception ceremony. "I would try utmost to get gold medals in the forthcoming Asian games in South Korea. I shall try to deliver my best in the future attempts," Dipa, who won the women's vault bronze in Glasgow Thursday, said at the reception ceremony. "I would be happy if more gymnasts produced from
Tripura and earn the triumph for the country and the state. I will help at my level best to other gymnasts to build their career," she said. Tripura Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sahid Choudhury said: "Dipa is not only made proud to the people of Tripura, but also to the country as well. We would keen to see other young men and women to follow Dipa. Government would positively help them in their endeavours." Dipa won the Commonwealth bronze with an average score of 14.366. The 20-year-old had scored a mere 13.633 points in the first Vault, the lowest out of eight competitors in the final. However, in a remarkable comeback Thursday night, Dipa scored the highest in the second Vault with 15.100 to bring up her average to 14.366. Dipa, who is a five-time
national overall individual champion for five consecutive times between 2010-2014, is a physical instructor under Tripura's sports and youth affairs department. In the 34th National Games held in Ranchi (Jharkhand) in February 2011, Dipa won five gold medals in Floor, Vault, All R o u n d , Balance beam and Uneven Bars. She was keen on sports since childhood when she would play at her ancestral home at Abhaynagar in the outskirts of Agartala. "But she opted for gymnastics once she visited the Netaji Subhas R e g i o n a l Coaching centre when she was studying in Class VI and there was no looking back," said Dipa's father Dulal Karmakar. Karmakar, an SAI (Sports Authority of India) coach in weightlifting, told IANS: "Now the Arjuna award is not far away for Dipa. She needs more
technical and financial support to earn more skills in gymnastics to get new rewards and accolades." "We are very happy with our daughter's performance. Her recognition was also because of her coach Bisweswar Nandi who has worked very hard for her, and Dipa had done a lot
according to his coaching," said Karmakar. Arjuna award-winning gymnast Mantu Debnath said: "Tripura has young men and women who have enormous skills in gymnasts and they would show their performance if they got appropriate support and encouragement."

7 Effective Time Management Tips To Maximize Your Productivity 1. List “Time-Wasters”
What do you do when you’re waiting in the doctor’s office or headed home on the train? If you’re staring out the window, you’re wasting valuable time. Instead, you could be sending emails or brainstorming and taking notes on your next project at work or school. You could even use this dead time to work in your daily stress-relieving breathing exercises as long as you’re doing something productive.
Start your day with a list of things you know you tend to waste time on. Keep the list nearby. When you notice you’re wasting time, add that time-waster to the list. This will serve as a reminder of things you shouldn’t allow yourself to do–like watching cat videos when you should be sending emails.

2. Hide Or Uninstall Social Media Apps Among those who use social media, the average person spends 3.6 hours per day socializing online, reveals research conducted by Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange. That’s about a quarter of the time you’re awake! Imagine what you could do with those extra hours.
HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. There are nine zones in the puzzle. Do not enter a digit into a box if it already appears elsewhere in the same zone, row across or column down the entire puzzle. Solve Time: Under 13 min. - Genius; 13-17 min - Scholar; 17-21 min - Smart; 21-25 min - Not bad; 25+ min - Keep practising DIFFICULTY LEVEL : MEDIUM
To keep yourself from wasting this time, remove social networking apps from your mobile device’s home screen and the toolbar on your computer’s browser. While the sites won’t be completely out of reach, this practice can keep you from checking updates on impulse (when let’s face it, there’s nothing new there anyway). 3. Set Daily Goals With Reminders Every day comes with new tasks to accomplish. Make it easy for yourself to complete each task by taking life one day at a time. Do you have a

huge report due next month? Consider what you’ll do each day to finish it instead of waiting until the last minute. Use apps like Google Calendar to stay on top of your daily goals. You can set up reminders to stay organized and make sure you don’t forget anything. 4. Complete Most Important Tasks First It’s easy to start your day with the simplest tasks. It makes you feel like you’re accomplishing something even when you’re avoiding your big project. But by the time you’re done with your less important tasks, you’re already worn out and even more reluctant to start on your priority work. Switch things up and perform the
most important tasks first. It will be a relief once you’re done, and the rest of your day will run more smoothly. 5. Stop Multitasking Multitasking is a myth! As NPR reports, humans can’t physically multitask. Our brains instead juggle attention from one task to the other so quick we’re given the illusion we’re multitasking.
To get the best advice on how to manage your time, consider reading time-management books. They’ll likely be more useful to you since they’re more in-depth. You’ll often find exercises to help you apply the concepts, too.
Answer
But we’re not very efficient at it. If you try to do too many things at once, you probably won’t finish those tasks to a high standard. Plus, it could take you more time than if you simply focused on one task at a time, meaning you only hinder your productivity by multitasking. 6. Make Use Of Dead Time

Australia's worst medal haul since 1986 prompts recriminations, inquiries Canberra (IANS): Australia finished the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with its lowest medal haul since 1986, a lackluster performance that has already led to several internal investigations. Australian athletes won just 49 gold medals and 137 medals overall at Glasgow - the lowest since Edinburgh 1986 (40 golds and 121 overall), reports Xinhua. The numbers represent a dip of nearly 50 percent from when the Games were last held in Australia - in Melbourne in 2006 - and continued the team's poor showing following the 2012 London Olympics, where only seven gold medals were won. England, with 58 gold medals and 174 overall, knocked Australia off the top of the medal table for the first time at a Commonwealth Games since Edinburgh. What will follow is introspection and inquiry, with several Australian teams - including those from athletics and weightlifting - coming under the microscope. Athletics Australia (AA) has already launched a board level review into all aspects of the Games after the embarrassment of the Eric
Hollingsworth affair, the head coach being sacked midway through the competition after a public and acrimonious spat with team captain Sally Pearson. AA president David Grace has called on all athletes to put their names to specific claims rather than hiding behind anecdotes and innuendo in a survey that will be given to all athletes about the Games. "It's all very well for people to say 'oh there are all these allegations around about Eric and all these incidents that have occurred in the past' but unless people are prepared to put up, there is nothing we can do," Grace said. "We would hope that if there is any concern that any particular athlete has had for something that has occurred in the past that they will express it." He added: "This review will look at the whole of the team prep. Look at issues of management of athletes, the pre-camp, the concept of pre-camp, the selection of the team, all aspects." Glasgow was the first Games in 64 years that Australia did not win a weightlifting gold medal, the worst ever outing given the number of
events by a gymnastics team, the least successful triathlon performance ever and the poorest wrestling showing since 1970. And in athletics, beset by controversy, Australia's yield of eight gold medals was the leanest return since Edmonton in 1978. While Australia's chef de mission Steve Moneghetti has consistently said that medal counts aren't the be-all and end-all, under the federal government's funding policies, those figures are the only currency that matters. "We're pretty happy with the overall performance of athletes generally, but certainly there are some sports in an evaluation sense will look back and certainly dive into a bit of detail," said Australian Institute of Sport chief executive Matt Favier. "With some sports we'll be having conversations with them around their performance here, and what does that indicate for us as a nation with regards to Rio." Favier, whose agency is charged with divvying up $120 million in high performance funding to sports, says Australia's overall medal count fell at the mid point of their expectations; the gold medal haul at the lower to mid range.
Don't lose your sleep over Security!
He was buoyed by Australia's performance in shooting, track cycling, boxing and the improvement since London in swimming. As was the case at the London Olympics in 2012, several Australian teams were divided by in-fighting throughout the meet. The high-profile falling out between Hollingsworth and hurdling gold medallist Pearson was one of the stories of the Commonwealth Games and again highlighted the off-field troubles Australia faced. Squash player Zac Alexander was also controversially omitted from the Australian team following an 11th-hour decision, leading to a mini-protest from his playing partner Ryan Cuskelly, who it was claimed "didn't even want to step foot on the court". Matthew Karwalski replaced Alexander in the team, leading to an alleged fall in morale. However Moneghetti wasn't critical of Australia's performances in Glasgow and instead put the decline down to England's success, as it was still benefiting from increased funding following the 2012 London Olympics. "I think England has performed really well and give credit to them," Moneghetti said. "I think they've probably achieved higher and we've probably achieved about what we expected."

Spain basketball coach confident of World Cup success
Madrid (IANS): There is huge pressure on the Spanish basketball team ahead of the FIBA World Cup which begins Aug 30. The fact that Spain are hosts has heightened expectations of a squad which was crowned world champions in 2006 and followed that success up with silver medals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games as well as the 2011 European Championship, reports Xinhua. Most Spaniards expect destiny to lead to a final which would pit Spain against the might of the US, and after two weeks of physical preparation in Madrid, the Spanish now start a series of friendly games to put the finishing touches to their challenge. "The team is used to playing with pressure, we have been in finals of European Championships, World Championships and also in the NBA and the players know how to live with that. Now we have to change that pressure into hope and make it another positive so we can transmit our expectations to the fans and give them something for the support they have given us," said Spain coach Juan Antonio Orenga in an interview with sports paper 'Diario AS.' Orenga was not shy of talking about a final which many are looking on as almost destiny. "We have to dream about that final, whoever it is against, because if we don't dream of the final, then we are not going to get there, but first we have to think about our matches against Iran, Egypt and then Brazil. If we don't win those games then we are not going to get to the final. It is going to be very hard and we all know that, but our aim is to win," he said. Orenga took the example of 2010 when Spain disappointed in the last World Championships, when they were knocked out of the quarter-finals by Serbia. "I don't want that to happen again, we spoke a lot about the final and then we didn't get there," said Orenga, who tried to put some context into the expectations. "If a side is better and they beat you, there is not much you can do. We have a gold medal and a fourth place in World Championships, and nothing more. If it was easy, we'd have won more often." "You can't win all of the time and nobody does. You can have a bad day and that has happened with this squad four years ago. We got through it and won the 2011 European Championship, we know what happens and that motives us more," he concluded.

Om Puri goes down on his knees for Helen Mirren "She is such a great actress and so devoid of any vanity. I had a great time shooting with her. The one saving grace of my troubled life is that when I start to work I forget all my problems," he
VETERAN actor Om Puri, who shot with Helen Mirren in the French town of Albi for Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom’s "The Hundred Foot Journey", says he was very impressed by the location and his lovely leading lady - and even went down on his knees for
her. "I rented my own apartment in Albi where I did my own cooking. When Helen Mirren arrived for shooting, I invited her home for dinner along with the rest of the crew. I cooked an Indian meal for them. When she arrived, I fell on my knees

Only SRK signed for next film: Rohit Shetty
FILMMAKER Rohit Shetty finds it amusing to know the various rumours doing the rounds about his next project. He says so far he has only signed Shah Rukh Khan for the new film. "There are so many films I am doing, according to reports in the media. Some are saying that I am doing a remake of 'Angoor', some are saying it is 'Hum' and now you are saying it is 'Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi'. And there is also a 'Punjab Express'. "So as per the reports, I am doing as
many as nine films with Shah Rukh. I'd like to put all rumours to rest and say that only Shah Rukh has confirmed for my next film. No one else has been roped in as of now. The pre-production for the film has already started and it will go on floors next year," Shetty said here. The "Chennai Express" director is currently awaiting the release of "Singham Returns" on Independence Day Aug 15. (IANS)

With its neat angular styling, steeply raked windshield and high profile, the Nissan Versa Note SR looks hip and contemporary. This sporty SR version adds a unique exterior package with a sporty front and rear fascia and chrome trimmed grille, dark headlight surrounds, fog lights, rear spoiler, suede-like seats and 16inch sport aluminumalloy wheels with darkfinished contrasting pockets. Take the cabin for instance with its funky looking orange racing stripe down the seat centers and matching orange detailed door panels and stitching. The orange detailing looks fresh and cool and contrasts well with the dark suede-like fabric seats and really do lend a sportier feel to the cabin. It is little details like this which make you enjoy the car.

Inside, the chunky leather-wrapped steering wheel is a also a nice touch and comes with controls for Bluetooth, audio and trip computer settings. Instruments and controls are simple, well detailed and easy to use The high roofline allows for good visibility and plenty of room and the rear quarters in particular are very spacious with ample head and foot room and there a bevy of useful cubbies, not much to complain about, there are some hard plastics, but to be expected at this price and nothing that detracts The tall roofline allows the good visibility and the parking camera also helps. Nissan also offer its excellent Around View Monitor on the Versa and to date is the only player in this segment to offer such an amenity. Cargo capacity, to be expected is good with a maximum total available volume is 532 L, which doubles with the seats folded down. One very novel featurein the cargo area is the false floor Nissan calls Divide-NHide. It comprises a fixed bottom storage section combined with a moveable second shelf- panel can be used to store hidden cargo room – ideal for keeping valuables away from prying eyes. On the road, the 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with dual fuel injection and Twin CVTC (Continuously Variable Timing Control) offers decent enough power and the CTV is smooth. Some may wish for smoother transitions, but it offer decent enough fuel economy with official ratings of 7.5 L/100 km city and 6.0 L/100 km highway. Chassis wise, the Versa rides on an independent strut suspension setup in front and a torsion beam rear axle keep the car on its wheels, while standard electric power steering helps save fuel. ABS and electronic brake force distribution (EBD) modulate front disc rotors and rear drum brakes. The Note provides a sporty, compliant ride overall with good levels of driver and passenger comfort. Overtly rough roads do upset the SR’s composure at times, but general urban and highways roads do nothing to detract from the smooth relaxing and easy to drive nature of the Note. To sum up, the Note SR is a sporty good looking hatchback equally at home in the city or the urban grind and features a high levels of comfort and comfort in performance orientated package. 2015: Nissan Versa Note SR Priced from: $18,698.

2014 Ford C-Max Energi SEL: Fuel Efficiency is the watchword at Ford! The 2014 Ford C-Max Energi compact fiveseat hatchback is a new plug-in gasoline electric crossover hybrid version and I must say very clever new vehicle from Ford. The C-Max is Energi is powered by a 2.0litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder gas engine, which produces 141 horsepower and 129 lb.ft. of torque. It gains its electric drive via extra power from a 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which powers an electric motor, for a total system output of 195 hp on a full charge. The sole transmission available is Ford’s new electronic-controlled continuously variable transmission, designed to manage power delivery from both the gas engine and electric motor. Battery specs and issues are always important on a hybrid electric and to their credit Ford says the battery pack is 25 to 30 per cent smaller and 50 per cent lighter than the nickel metal hydride units used in its previous hybrids. Ford also say the battery packs are recyclable and feature air cooling, which helps in keeping the batteries longer lasting. Ford claims the C-Max can travel at speeds of up to 100 km/h in full electric mode and according to the maker, the C-Max delivers a 1.9 L/100 km city rating (combined gas and electric), 4.5 L/100 km on the highway (gas only) and has a total range of 1,221 kilometres (43 in electric-only mode). Charging time another major concern for plug in hybrids is claimed to be around seven hours to fully recharge with a standard 120volt plug. Ford says an optional 240-volt home-charging station can reduce that time to about 2.5 hours. In addition Ford is partnering with the Best Buy electronics retailers to install the home charging stations for $1,600. The C-Max looks funky and exciting with its cheeky, boxy shape and tall airy cabin. I like the big fish-like open-mouth grille and sharp angular headlamps. There are such neat features as: the optional power-operated lift-gate that can open by touching with your foot under the bumper, a self-parking system and of course, the MyFord Touch info and entertainment system. In addition The MyFord mobile app monitors and schedules charging times, range and locates the nearest charging stations. For the not cheap price, one expect and gets a high quality cabin, fit finish and materials and an impressive range of technology and Ford is to be commended on this. The C-Max’s tall profile, providing excellent headroom and allowing for more cabin space in all directions especially as far as legroom goes. The cabin offers more clues to the clever packaging with the tall upright structure allowing for more upright seating positions. The C-Max Energi cargo area offers a not too shabby 1,528 litres of space with the rear 60/40-split seat-backs completely folded. Wondering about the high floor height? That is due to the lithium-ion battery and other associated hybrid technology underneath. Our gleaming 2014 Ruby red metallic ($400 option) C-MAX Energi tester was an SEL mid-level model with an equipment package including: light stone leather seats, premium audio and navigation package, hands-free technology package, power liftgate, rear view camera, keyless entry start and tailgate lift and parking technology package (SAAP). Also included was an engine block heater, ($100) an fixed panoramic roof, (1200). Total price of the equipment package was $2,200 pushing up the base SEL price up from $36,999 to $42,864 including all options, federalexcise tax, ($100) and $1,565 destination and delivery charges. During the week I spent driving Ford’s newest plug-in I was very impressed at how it felt so normal –driving a regular vehicle
even while running in full electric mode. On the highway the C-Max Energi delivers hp from its 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine, push
ing a tall boxy cabin. However it is at its best in a mix of urban and suburban terrain where the smooth comfortable ride and
benign road manners make it an easy and pleasing vehicle to drive. The C-Max is impressively quiet although the gas ngine does get a bit noisy under hard acceleration. There were no real issues with the driving experience and the hybrid engine kicks in and out as and when needed pretty seamlessly. Of course fuel economy is a stand out and a major reason one would consider this vehicle. Passengers liked the roomy cabin, the ample cargo area and the fuel economy is a fantastic gift in this car and is scheduled to give the Toyota Prius a real run for its money. If I was in the market for a plug- in hybrid it wold be at the top of my list. The C-Max Energi is certainly a plug in hybrid to consider.

'Mardaani' shouldn't be compared to 'Singham Returns': Rani
IF Rani Mukerji will be seen kicking, slapping and punching criminals as a police officer in "Mardaani", Ajay Devgon will also be seen doing similar things in his forthcoming release "Singham Returns". But the actress says it's unfair to compare the two films. When asked whether the release of "Singham Returns" before "Mardaani" -both being cop-dramas -- would impact her film, she said: "He (Ajay) is a huge star and the film is a huge franchise. I have seen 'Singham' and I loved it." "Ours is a very small film and it's a small effort for all women. 'Mardaani' should not be compared to 'Singham Returns', which is a huge film." If reports are anything to go by, Kareena Kapoor has expressed a desire to play a police officer on the big screen.
And Rani too feels that "Kareena will make a fantastic cop. There is lot of scope in this industry to play different roles". Rohit Shetty's action thriller "Singham Returns" is coming out on Aug 15, while "Mardaani" is scheduled for an Aug 22 release. "I hope everybody likes this film. The film has got an A-certificate and it is a very relevant film. I feel if you have a daughter, you must teach her karate and martial arts. Self defence is important." Pradeep Sarkar has directed "Mardaani", which is his first film after the 2010 flop movie "Lafangey Parindey". Talking about the gap, he said: "I take time to make films. It's difficult to get good story. It takes time to find a good subject." (IANS)

TELEVISION star Gurmeet Chowdhary is being packaged as the first true-blue action star of Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatts’ production house. He is said to be gearing up to perform some daring stunts in "Khamoshiyan" a la Hugh Jackman. “Gurmeet is like a one-man army in 'Khamoshiyan'. He will be presented as a larger-than-life invincible force. So far the heroes in Bhatts’ films - Emraan Hashmi or Randeep Hooda or Shiney Ahuja, were never shown to rip off their shirts in rippling glory. Gurmeet will be marketed by Vishesh Films as Bollywood’s own Hugh Jackman," said a source. "Elaborate stunts would be part of the narrative for the first time in a Bhatt film," the source added. Gurmeet fights shy of commenting on his looks and presentation in "Khamoshiyan". “Mahesh Bhatt sahab has tweeted my picture with blood on my face. So you can guess what kind of a role I have. With the kind of physique and image that I have, doing stunts comes naturally to me," he said. He can’t stop raving about his film’s producers. “The experience of working with the Bhatts is everything I had hoped for. It’s something I’d never forget. I'm indebted to the Bhatts for life...just as I am indebted to Ramanand Sagar-ji’s family for giving me my first break on television. Some things you never forget. You shouldn’t forget." Gurmeet feels his movie debut is just right. “I couldn’t have hoped for a better film debut for a better banner. I’ve shot with for 'Khamoshiyan' for about 20 days, and I feel the same surge of excitement that I did when I started on television. Mahesh Bhatt saab is on the sets to guide us because we’re a new team. I feel blessed. Right now my complete focus is on getting it right in 'Khamoshiyan',” he added. (IANS)

There's no perfect relationship: Soha Ali Khan Q. Many marriages in showbiz are crumbling. Does that scare you? A. I’ve always felt when you are committed in a relationship, you’ve to work through the difficult times. I’ve seen my parents (Sharmila Tagore and late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi) in a successful solid marriage for 44 years. I am sure they had their problems. They were completely different personalities. But they must have worked on their marriage. And they made it work. I never felt any insecurity regarding my parents’ marriage. I think they handled their issues and the public face of their marriage was so dignified.
BE it Bollywood or Hollywood - in the world of showbiz, several marriages are crumbling. Actress Soha Ali Khan, who recently got engaged to her beau Kunal Kemmu, says the key to a healthy relationship is to "work around the dissatisfactions" as nothing is perfect. The actors got engaged in Paris recently, and they are yet to decide on their nuptials. In a tetea-tete, Soha spoke about relationships and her idea of marriage. Excerpts:
Q. Then how according to you, does a modern marriage work? A. There is no perfect relationship. You have to work around the dissatisfaction. One reason why marriages break faster now is because people live longer. Earlier people died at 60. Now they live to be a 100, so all that more time to spend in a marriage. How many years can you live happily in one relationship? You need to have a sense of commitment, maturity and infinite patience to make a marriage last. Q. Are you arguing against marrying Kunal? A. To keep a relationship going in today’s day
Can't take success for granted: Rohit Shetty
FILMMAKER Rohit Shetty, who has delivered blockbusters galore in Bollywood and who is currently awaiting the release of "Singham Returns", doesn't believe in taking success for granted and so continues to put in his "100 percent" to his films. The director of films like "Golmaal" series, "Singham", "Bol Bachchan" and "Chennai Express" has a pulse of the audience's taste.
Does that put an additional pressure on him to surpass the success of his previous films? "No, it is not about the pressure," Shetty said here. "It is the approach that matters the most. You cannot take your success for granted. After 'Chennai Express', when we were writing 'Singham Returns', we knew the pressure. Today, that is why I am not nervous. "See, I don't know the fate
of the film and I can't boast of the business. But whether the film is a hit or a flop on Friday, my honesty will be there. When I sit with my team in my office, I would feel that 'Yes, we gave our 100 percent to the film'. The rest is up to the audience," he said. Starring Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor, "Singham Returns" is releasing Aug 15 on Independence Day. (IANS)
and age is very difficult. I’d like to think if my relationship has worked for five years, it’s permanent. We are all so self-centred. So am I. To give that much to a relationship is very difficult. Q. Would you be able to do it? A. My happiness always came first. But now to make Kunal happy makes me happier. But ultimately, I don’t know how much I can sacrifice for anyone else. I always said we should not
take the relationship for granted. We need to continue to communicate our feelings about one another, no matter what its repercussions. Only an honest approach can keep a relationship going. I’ve seen the dignity that my parents brought into their marriage. If I am a secure person today it’s because of the marriage that my parents shared. I’d certainly want my child to feel the same sense of security. (IANS)

India continued to bolster their support with increasing interest in these games reflected through online searches on Google. As the curtain went down on the XX Commonwealth Games, India notched up a respectable number of medals. "Badminton remained the most searched sporting discipline as Indian badminton star Parupalli Kashyap became the first Indian man to win a badminton gold at the Games in 32 years. It was a his-
toric win as he clinched the gold for India and generated a lot of buzz online," said Google in a release. The search trend also revealed that boxing and wrestling stood second and third, respectively, among the highly searched disciplines during the games. "In this cricket crazy nation, stellar performances by the Indian squad at the Commonwealth Games helped generate a lot of interest and inclination

British minister quits over Israel's Gaza offensive
London (IANS): British Prime Minister David Cameron lost a key ally from the Asian community as Baroness Warsi, minister of state in the foreign office, quit from the government, saying the British government’s policy on the crisis
in Gaza is “morally indefensible”. She wrote on her Twitter feed that she was leaving with “deep regret”, Asian Lite, a newspaper for the BritishAsian community in London, reported.
Lady Warsi, daughter of a Pakistani immigrant and who was previously chairman of the Conservative Party, became the first female Muslim cabinet minister when David Cameron took office in 2010. Her departure

will affect the Conservative influence among the Asians, especially the Muslims from Pakistan. In her resignation letter presented to the prime minister, Lady Warsi said the British response to the crisis in Gaza will have a long term “detrimental impact on our reputation internationally and domestically”. She appeared to suggest that Britain’s support for Israel could encourage extremism in Britain. Home Office evidence suggested that Britain’s response to the Gaza crisis risked “becoming a basis for radicalisation (that) could have consequences for us for years to come”, she wrote. “With deep regret I have this morning written to the Prime Minister & tendered my resignation. I can no longer support Govt policy on #Gaza,” she tweeted Tuesday. “For some weeks, in meetings and discussions, I have been open and honest about my views on the conflict in Gaza and response to it," she wrote in her resignation letter. “My view has been that our policy in relation to the Middle East peace process generally but more recently our approach and language during the current crisis in Gaza is morally indefensible, is not in Britain’s national interest and will have a long term detrimental impact on our reputation internationally and domestically.” She also suggested that the Israeli government should face international trial for alleged war crimes, but
feared the British government would not support that position. “Particularly as the minister with responsibility for the United Nations, The International Criminal Court and Human Rights, I believe our approach in relation to the current conflict is neither consistent with our values, specifically our commitment to the rule of law and our long history of support for international justice.” Several backbench Conservative MPs have called on Cameron to take a more robust line with Israel amid concerns its actions in Gaza are “disproportionate”. She added that the decision “has not been easy” but there is “great unease” within the foreign office over “the way recent decisions are being made”. “I must be able to live with myself for the decisions I took or the decisions I supported. By staying in government at this time I do not feel that I can be sure of that," she went on London Mayor Boris Johnson, a fellow Conservative, told LBC Radio
he had “great respect” for Lady Warsi, adding: “She has done a great job for us and I hope she will be back as soon as possible.” Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said it was no “secret” that there were different opinions over Gaza within the government and that Lady Warsi had “strong views” on the subject. Cameron, who is on holiday, is yet to respond. Conservative MP Nicholas Soames tweeted that Lady Warsi had been “right to leave over a matter of such great importance”. For Labour, shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander said that most “reasonably minded people across Britain will agree with the sentiments expressed” by Lady Warsi, adding: “It is a sad reflection of the prime minister’s misjudgement of the crisis in Gaza that this capable minister has felt the need to leave the government.” One of five daughters of Pakistani immigrants, Lady Warsi studied law at Leeds University, later working for the Crown Prosecution Service before setting up her own legal practice.

mom trying to cope while wayward dad Ethan Hawke turns out to be more of a free spirit when it comes to child rearing and owning up to his responsibilies. Two sets of actors play these troubled youth and the writers have come up with a story that truly resonates. Honesty, heartache, setbacks and achievements track Mason and Samantha who are marvellously portrayed by Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater. Smart insertion of historic and cultural events helps round out the time frame lending a nice sense of relevance to the story which at 166 minutes may seem a few minutes long. Never mind the length and settle in for an eventful journey as we go on an unbelievable tale of one family whose friends, relatives and associates will grow on you and linger.
Summer is usually the time when Hollywood pulls out all the stops to d e l i v e r blockbuster entertainm e n t designed to appeal to the masses. Comedies, super heroes and action flicks are in vogue. Adults seeking out quality dramas are often left to fend for themselves in a dwindling market for smart films. Sure to reverse this unfortunate trend is Mongrel Media's release of Boyhood. Bountiful stellar performances from one and all make this film one if the best of the year. Check out this sure to be Oscar contender at Vancouver's venerable Fifth Avenue Theatre and International Village Cinemas. Like actors certain directors have a loyal fan base. Over a 12 year period director Richard Linklater shot this masterpiece using the same actors. The results are a scintillating drama charting the growth of two children.
Ups and downs are com on to every family and the plight of Mason and Samantha are a case in point. Early on we see the development of this pair as they mature through our eyes. Pain and laughter go hand in hand as their single mom and birth dad have their own issues to contend with. Strong as an ox is the work of Patricia Aquette who shows all the signs if frustration as a

2014 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: Bulletproof Diesel sedan is big on fuel efficiency
The Volkswagen Jetta enters the 2014 model year with minor changes. The Jetta remains a very good substantial looking sedan with some high-class touches. The major selling point is the choice of engines and the excellent fuel-efficient diesel engine and the fact like all Volkswagens the entry and intermediate models are now affordable in price to anyone and can compete head to head with anything in its sector. The Jetta arrives with a choice of three engines: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, 2.5litre five-cylinder, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel (TDI). The gas engines use a five-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. The TDI uses a sixspeed manual or optional six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automatic. Features on the 2.0-litre Trendline include 15-inch steel wheels, manual mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, power locks, vanity mirrors, CD/MP3 stereo with four speakers, auxiliary input, six-way manually-adjustable cloth seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, tilt and telescopic steering column, and auto up/down windows. The 2.0 Trendline+ adds air conditioning and keyless entry. The 2.0
Comfortline adds 15-inch alloy wheels, heated power mirrors with integrated turn signals, heated washer nozzles, anti-theft alarm, front centre armrest with storage compartment, cruise control, dual rear cup holders, cloth door trim, floor mats, illuminated vanity mirrors, six speakers, heated seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seat with centre pass-through and locking glove box. The TDI Comfortline also includes front fog lights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The 2.5litre Sportline adds 17-inch alloy wheels, eight-way manually adjustable “leatherette” seats, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power sunroof and sport suspension. Our tester was a Highline 2.0 liter TDI model finished in a beautiful Moon rock Silver metallic paint and equipped with the six- speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic Blue tooth, Front fog lights, Leather seats, Matte chrome interior trim, MDI media interface with iPod connectivity, Multifunction trip, Power sunroof, Premium radio and touch 6 disc CD changer, Sirius radio and Engine block heater (TDI only). The base price for our version was $29,190 and
our tester also featured the technology package ($1,570) comprising optional equipment including; navigation system touch screen and the amazing sounding Fender premium audio 400-watt sound ($1290) The interior of the Jetta is classic Volkswagen…in our case a corn silk beigeVienna leather; refined sensible and timeless. The front seats were heated comfortable affairs and there is plenty of room for occupants along with good storage. The rear seat is also roomy and folds forward, although they don’t go completely flat, providing extra space in addition to the large trunk. On the road the TDI engine in our tester proved to be an excellent fuel-efficient power plant. It has
plenty of torque and pulls like a freight train at low revs. The diesel puts out 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, which peaks at just 1,750 rpm. Our tester had the optional six-speed automatic Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) for an
additional $1,400. The handling is responsive and the car feels well sorted with a stiff chassis and great driving dynamics. The low-end torque gives the Jetta creditable performance. The official figures for the diesel with

DSG are 6.7 L/100 km in the city and 4.6 on the highway. The only downside with TDI is the premium you pay for the TDI, which is a couple of grand more than the base 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine. I know a few family members who own various Volkswagen Jetta TDIs and they refuse to give them up or buy another brand such is the legendary reliability, fuel economy Whichever model of Jetta you buy the same values of quality, performance and pedigree remain. The TDI however is outstanding.
2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI price $29,190 (Price as tested with options, PDI and AC tax $30,760)

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has named six Toyota Canada vehicles as best-inclass for fuel efficiency for the 2014 model year. That’s more than any other auto manufacturer. Toyota’s long-standing commitment to environmental leadership is demonstrated by the innovations that continue to improve conventional vehicles as well as the research and development into advanced technologies such as hybrids, plug-in technologies, and hydrogen fuel cells. For decades Toyota has been bringing Canadians fuel efficient vehicle choices while still maintaining the performance and versatility that Canadians drivers expect. As a testament to Toyota’s approach, The TCI vehicles – which were awarded by NRCan for the lowest estimated annual fuel use in their respective classes – include: • Toyota Prius c (Compact car) • Toyota Prius (Mid-size car)
• Toyota Prius v (Mid-size station wagon) • Toyota Tacoma (Small pickup truck) • Toyota Highlander Hybrid AWD LE Plus (Standard SUV) • Scion iQ (Minicompact car) This marks the 14th year in a row that a vehicle from the Prius family has been named to the list, including the Prius v leading the way in each of the three years it has been on the market. In fact, this year every Prius hybrid model has won its respective category. It is also the fourth consecutive year the Tacoma pickup has received the accolade. “Superior fuel efficiency has always been a hallmark of Toyota vehicles,” said Seiji Ichii, CEO and President, Toyota Canada Inc. “This recognition from Natural Resources Canada is an important validation of our leadership in this important area. It reflects how we’re constantly innovating to give drivers the everimproving fuel efficiency they value.”
