ARJUN Gill, 23, of Surrey won the gold medal in the men's 97 kg freestyle wrestling final over Satywart Kadian of India by decision in the final after the match finished tied 44. “It was tough, really tough,” Gill told the media. “(Kadian) moves his hands really well so it's hard to score.” Commonwealth Games Canada reported: “In the 97kg weight-class Arjun Gill wrestled against Hugh Mccloskey of Northern Ireland in the Quarter finals. Although Mccloskey did manage a throw for 4 points, Gill was quick to create momentum and the match ended 16-5. “In the semi-final match, Gill fought Sam Belkin of New Zealand for the chance to wrestle for gold. Gill received the first two points with an attempt to push his opponent

from the ring. Gill ended by winning 14-1. “In the gold medal match, Gill met Satywart Kadian from India. In a close bout and with the score 4-2 for the Indian wrestler, Gill pushed Kadian from the ring, Gill tied it up and was fought on to win. The Indian wrestling community present were amazed and somewhat shocked. Gill had done his job. ““This means a lot; it means a lot to my family, it means a lot to me, it means a lot to Canada,” said a quiet Gill.” ARJUN'S mom Kuljit Gill told The VOICE she was “very happy,” when asked how she felt about her son's victory. When asked if their family had been confident that he would get a gold medal, she replied: “No, we were not. We were not. No. … Because it's a

Sonia Gandhi: Tough and powerful! (Controversy over Natwar Singh’s comments) RATTAN'S RUMBLE I think that if there’s one politician the Bharatiya Janata Party government fears – REALLY fears – it is none other than SONIA GANDHI. The first time that I saw Sonia was at the residence of Indira Gandhi in 1977 just after she had lost the election following the end of the dreaded and hated Emergency Rule she had imposed in 1975 in order to hang on to power. I was assigned by her family-controlled newspaper, National Herald, to accompany her on a visit to a floodaffected resettlement colony in Delhi. I was the junior-most reporter but then no senior reporter wanted to be with her because she was no longer in power and everyone had taken it for granted that her political career was over and she would go to jail for the Emergency excesses and abuses. Little did they know that that particular visit to that resettlement colony (about which I have writ-

ten several times over the years) would be the beginning of the road back to power. While waiting for her in the sprawling compound of the governmentowned house, I suddenly saw Sonia in westerntype clothes and high leather boots attending to her kids, Rahul and Priyanka, on a side lawn. But at the time, she and her pilot husband Rahul were considered as ‘curiosity items,’ so to speak. The big guy was Indira’s younger son Sanjay, feared as a goon, and her ambitious wife, Maneka (who’s now a minister in the BJP government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi). Sanjay and Maneka stood by Indira, encouraging her to fight back. As I wrote just last May – when I suggested that Priyanka, and not Rahul, should be the Congress boss – that visit to the resettlement colony “was the start of a spectacular comeback that she mounted and unnerved the then coalition government that made the blunder of arresting her. That only led to her being portrayed as a martyr. She won a huge majority in the 1980 election and I

Rahul and Sonia Gandhi covered that election as a reporter with the Times of India.” When Sanjay died in a small plane crash in New Delhi in 1980, I saw how shattered Indira was – she never really recovered from that shock. He was being groomed as her successor and it was well known that she would tell Congress leaders to go to him for major decisions. I accompanied Rajiv in the special train carrying Sanjay’s ashes to Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh (I was reporting for the Times of India) and witnessed how irritated he became whenever Congress workers chanted slogans that portrayed him as Indira’s successor because at the time he had no intention of joining politics. Sonia was said to have been dead set against such a move, too.

But Indira persisted and Rajiv seemed to have no choice. But the general opinion was that he was too decent for the dirty world of politics. When he became prime minister after his mother’s assassination, for a while it seemed that he would truly transform India into a modern, corruptionfree country after winning the largest Lok Sabha majority (411 seats out of 542) in history. But he just wasn’t cut out for politics and everything seemed to unravel. He lost the 1989 election and was assassinated by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber during the election campaign of 1991. (I came to Canada in 1990 and was travelling in California when I learned of the assassination.) BUT it seemed that the Congress Party just

couldn’t survive without a Nehru-Gandhi family member and they finally managed to convince her to become the party’s president in 1998. She stunned Hindu fanatics when she led her party to victory in the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections in spite of all their bigoted propaganda of her being an Italian (and by implication a Christian). Interestingly, just after her 2004 victory, I wrote an article in The VOICE titled, “Indians tell Hindu nationalist party they are NOT religious bigots or racists”: “The Indian people have spoken loud and clear and the message is (as I was quoted on CBC Radio as saying …): “What the Indian people have basically said is that they are not religious bigots and they are not racists. It does not matter if (Sonia Gandhi) is white or Christian. She's Indian to them and she comes from the famous GandhiNehru family and that really matters to the people." Unfortunately, licking their wounds, the BJP grew even more vicious and stirred up racism when it appeared that Sonia would become the prime minister.

Saturday, Aug. 02, 2014 | Indo-Canadian Voice In a piece titled “Shame on BJP! Shame on Vajpayee!” in The VOICE in May 2004, I wrote: “How the Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and its leader Atal Behari Vajpayee have disgraced themselves with their shameless racism and bigotry against Sonia Gandhi! “The intense atmosphere of hate that they were steadily whipping up against the Italian-born woman who kicked their butt in this election – even as she had done in the past few years in state elections – forced Sonia to back out of the Prime Minister’s post.” I also bluntly noted: “The BJP and their allies who support this bigoted stand against Sonia have made fools of themselves before the whole world. The next time an Indian in Canada or the USA or in Britain complains about racism, don’t be surprised if you are told to shut up and look at your own guys first.” Then I added: “Sonia, on the other hand, displayed class when she gracefully declined the Prime Minister’s “gaddi” (position of power) and scored a stunning coup by making the GREAT economist and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, MANMOHAN SINGH, 72, a Sikh and the first nonHindu Prime Minister. “He is the one who started

India’s economic reforms as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. He depreciated the Indian Rupee by 18 per cent, ended export subsidy, delicensed all but 18 industries and opened up all but eight sectors to private industry, slashed import duty and allowed partial convertibility of the rupee. “I don’t need to go into all the details here – but he is just what India needs at this stage. “And of course, as he himself quite clearly stated, Sonia will still be the head honcho – yes, she will be more powerful than those bigots who caused so many people to die in Hindu-Muslim riots. How can any self-respecting, educated Indian turn a blind eye to this despicable communal record of the BJP?” But just as Rajiv had proved to be a disappointment in politics, her son, Rahul, on whom she was relying, proved be another letdown – in fact, he was even worse than his father! And her control over Manmohan Singh when he was prime minister finally led to disillusionment – and her party’s worst defeat ever in May. The BJP were back in power – with a majority government for the first time ever! NOW former external affairs minister K. Natwar Singh, 83, who was forced

Natwar Singh to resign from the government in 2005 following the Iraqi food-for-oil scandal, has claimed that Sonia didn’t finally accept the prime minister’s post in 2004 because Rahul was scared that she would be assassinated. Natwar Singh, who fell out with the Gandhi family and quit the Congress Party in 2008, said this week that Sonia’s decision had nothing to do with her “inner voice” as she had claimed at the time. He said that Sonia and Priyanka even paid him a visit on May 7 not to disclose this fact in his soonto-be-released autobiography “One Life is Not Enough: An Autobiography.” Natwar Singh said in an interview to Karan Thapar on Headlines Today: “Rahul was totally against her mother becoming Prime Minister. He said she would be killed like his father and grandmother and as a son he would not allow her to become the PM. He was very

adamant” at a May 18, 2004 meeting where Manmohan Singh, Gandhi family friend Suman Dubey, Priyanka and he were present, according to an Indian newspaper report this week. Natwar Singh claimed that Sonia apologized to him and told him that she was not aware of how he had been treated by the government, but he told her: “nobody will buy it because nothing happens in Congress without your knowledge, without your approval. Same is the case with government.” Natwar Singh also backed up the claim made by Manmohan Singh's media adviser Sanjaya Baru that important government files were shown to Sonia by a PMO official. He added that there was no protest because Sonia was the “foremost” leader. Natwar Singh, whose son is a BJP MLA in an Indian state, said that his revelations had nothing to do with revenge, but “it is important to tell facts as you know them.” He added: “She is a public figure. She is the most important politician in India... She is every biographer's dream. She is a historic figure.” Natwar Singh said that Sonia was tougher than Rajiv, noting: “He was very large-hearted. You cannot take liberties with her.” (Sonia has denied Natwar

Singh’s allegations. Manmohan Singh has denied that any files were sent to Sonia from the Prime Minister’s Office.) THE fact remains that Sonia is STILL a power to reckon with. I have seen too many ups and downs in Indian politics over the decades and I know that the BJP can lose popularity very quickly and be defeated in the next election. But I don’t see a future for the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty with Rahul at the helm – the party needs someone like PRIYANKA. As I wrote after the Congress Party’s defeat last May: “Back in January of 2013 I suggested in a write-up that the Congress should make Priyanka Gandhi Vadra the prime ministerin-waiting by getting her into the Rajya Sabha (India’s House of Lords) while Rahul could take over his mom’s Sonia Gandhi’s position as president of the Congress Party. Sonia could remain the real boss behind the scenes. “I noted back then that Rahul had proved to be an utter failure and what the Congress Party desperately needed was a charismatic figure like Priyanka who bears quite a resemblance to her grandmother Indira Gandhi. “I also noted that I could understand Sonia’s predicament in projecting

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra her daughter as the next prime minister, but that Rahul should realize the reality of the situation himself and urge his mother to do so. “Well now it’s even more obvious that the Congress MUST dump Rahul who proved to be a terribly weak personality while Priyanka won admiration for the way she hit back at BJP leader Narendra Modi during the election campaign, mocking him and providing a sliver of hope to the beleaguered Congress Party. “I see the same defiance in her that I saw while covering Indira Gandhi shortly after she had suffered a humiliating defeat in 1977 just after the hated Emergency Rule. “ … Priyanka, I believe, has that same personality and defiance to revive the demoralized Congress Party once again. “Sonia Gandhi would really be one stupid woman (to put it very bluntly) if she does not replace Rahul with Priyanka as soon as possible!”

November. Another plus for Rasode is that the poll showed that CRIME (45%) continues to be the top issue facing the city, followed by transportation (21%), poverty (10%) and economic development (8%). Rasode split from Surrey first on the issue of crime and she continues to highlight it. Yet another plus is that the poll shows that following three years of single party rule in City Council, almost two-thirds of residents (64%) would like to have councillors who can work together in a coalition, while 21% favour independent councillors. Only 5% of residents prefer to have councillors who represent a political party. Interestingly, the online survey of a representative sample of Surrey residents also

shows that the public reacted positively to McCallum’s proposal to elect City Council through a ward system, but not to Hepner’s idea of constructing a Ferris Wheel near the Patullo Bridge. McCallum’s proposal to elect the Surrey City Council by neighbourhood wards resonated with the population, with 53% of residents calling it a “very good” or “good” idea. Conversely, Hepner’s suggestion to build a Ferris Wheel on the beach wedged between the Patullo and SkyTrain bridges was deemed “bad” or “very bad” by 72% of Surrey residents. Results of the poll are based on an online study conducted from July 17-21 among 507 residents of Surrey who are aged 18+ and are Your Insights panel members

NEWS IN BRIEF DOUG MCCALLUM’S HYPOCRISY ON POLICE AFFAIRS: Surrey mayoral

candidate Doug McCallum was slammed right back by Surrey first

mayoral candidate Linda Hepner and likely mayoral candidate Barinder

Rasode when he sent a press release on Thursday stating, “In spite of electoral rhetoric calling for open meetings of the City of Surrey’s Police Committee (formerly known as the Public Safety Committee), the voting records of both [Hepner and Rasode] tell a far different story.” Hepner said McCallum knows that that protocol is followed in every city because it involves legal issues and could put police officers at risk. Incidentally, even The VOICE slammed McCallum when he was mayor for trying to pres-

sure the RCMP not to issue press releases of bad news. SOUTH ASIAN DUMP TRUCK DRIVER KILLED: A news report states that a 24-year-old dump truck driver who was killed on Wednesday in a singlevehicle crash was a South Asian whose name is Malhi, according to some Facebook posts. The crash took place just east of the 264th Street offramp. The dump truck with its trailer was believed to have crashed because of a mechanical failure, the RCMP said. There was speculation that a front tire burst. SOUTH ASIAN FORCES BANK OF CANADA TO CORRECT FACTS: They say ‘faith can move mountains’ – so can the Bank of Canada! Toronto’s Hitesh Doshi has forced the Bank of Canada to rectify the wrong information it had put up on its website because he had

happened to have hiked Mount Edith Cavell in the Canadian Rockies and the image on the new plastic $10 bill was not that of the mountain as claimed by the bank. The website had stated that the banknote featured the Edith Cavell peak on the left side of the bill, as well as Mount Marmot, Pyramid and Palisades mountains, and Mount Zengel. Now the bank says that the left side of the bill features Lectern Peak and Aquila Mountain, the centre shows Redan, Esplanade and Gargoyle, and on the right is Mount Zengel. Hmm, what’s in a name?! FORMER HINDU PRIEST DENIED PAROLE: Karam Vir, the former Hindu priest who was jailed in 2013 for sex crimes involving two teenage girls in Abbotsford, has been denied parole because the Parole Board of Canada says he refuses to admit his guilt and maintains that the girls made false claims against him. Vir will most probably be deported to India when he is released from prison.

An eye-opening experience BY HARNOOR GILL Grade 10 student Christ The King Catholic Secondary Georgetown, Ontario I had a really eye-opening experience last week when I was able to go to a conference where most youth wouldn’t get a chance to go to. From July 23 to 25 I participated in the conference hosted by Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) at the Sheraton Guildford Hotel in Surrey, B.C. This was an opportunity for the community at large to participate in the Youth Strengths and Prevention of Delinquency and Gang Involvement Conference. As a celebration of International Youth Day, it was a dream come true to travel from my hometown of Georgetown, Ontario, to attend this conference. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet two professors that teach at KPU. They were Dr. Farhad Dastur and Dr. Gira Bhatt who were great individuals that I was extremely proud to meet to end the influence of gang involvement among youth. Dr. Gira Bhatt was the leading founder of the Acting Together project, which began in 2007 to chart a path to strengthen the youth of our community to stay away from the dangerous life of violence. It was great to get to know Dr. Dastur who was the Master of Ceremonies and did a great job at adding a touch of humour to serious issues. I was also able to meet Eileen Mohan who had an extremely touching story to tell all of us at the conference. It’s so sad because it could have been anyone but Eileen’s son just seemed to be at the wrong place in the wrong time. Chris Mohan had just stepped out of the door to go to basketball practice and was shot in the midst of gang violence that was going on in the community. Like most people, Eileen would have shut her doors and tried to forget about the whole incident like it never happened. But Eileen was extremely brave and courageous to stand up to reality, which is how she ended up forming the Chris Mohan Memorial Foundation to try and ensure that this will

Harnoor with Eileen Mohan never happen again. Another rather remarkable delegate that I also met at the conference was Michael Ungar, a professor of social work at Dalhousie University, who shared his thoughts at the one of the sessions for youth. It was interesting to see how the various ways to succeed in life involved us being able to fortify the strengths that we already possess. There was also a keynote speaker from Portland, U.S., that really caught my attention: Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener. He had also led one of the youth sessions and his was by far the most impacting one. This is because he led us into a series of improv skits where we where to say the sentence, “I went to the store and bought …”. We were to go around and say a word that would replace the sentence ending in alphabetical order. For example, the first person went to the store and bought an apple, the second one bought a baboon and the third one bought a cantaloupe. At the end of the conference, he

Harnoor with Chief Superintendent Dan Malo asked us if we still remembered the words we had said and sure enough we had. He stated jokingly that it was just another one of the many useless things that would be stuck in our head and wouldn’t get out for a while! There was also another terrible story shared by Katy Hutchinson. Katy’s husband Bob McIntosh died from a kick to the head delivered by a drunk 20-year-old named Ryan Aldridge when he went to check on a party at the home of a vacationing neighbour. Ryan was sentenced to five years for manslaughter. Katy met with Ryan did the unthinkable, which was to forgive Ryan for what he had done. Katy now speaks to youth to think twice before they decide to

go to a house party or smoke pot and drink under the age of 19 because you never know what could happen. She wrote a book titled “Walking After Midnight: One Woman's Journey Through Murder, Justice and Forgiveness.” DURING the conference, I also had the opportunity to meet Sgt. Charn Kingra. He was quite pleased that I had come from Toronto to attend a conference and decided to show me around the police station in Abbotsford. I was quite thrilled to get a behind-thescenes look into what these officers do on a day-to-day basis in keeping our communities safe. I got to see how the operators in a police department respond

Harnoor with VOICE’s General Manager Vinnie Combow and MP Jinny Sims

to a 9-1-1 call and how they send crews to the area of crime. I even brought along family friends who also had a chance to experience what goes on at the Abbotsford Police Station and it’s definitely something I will never forget. At first, I thought that I was one of the people that had come from the farthest place to come to this conference, but I was wrong. Josie Farrer had come all the way from Australia to participate in this conference and take back the knowledge and understanding and apply it to her own city back in Australia. She believes that the key to keeping youth at peace is to hear from young people themselves on how they want to see youth issues raised. She has even participated in the iStand Youth Summit to further reflect on how youth can be an integral part of their communities. Last but not least, I also met an individual who was from Australia but who now resides in Yukon: Chris Rider who believed that youth should become leaders amongst their peers in school. He even had a great idea of changing Pink Shirt Day into Black to further pro-

mote the cause of Mental Health as a fundraising campaign. I also had the opportunity to meet Dan Malo, Chief Superintendent, District Officer of the Lower Mainland Regional Police Service, ‘E’ Division RCMP, who is behind the great initiative of creating ‘End Gang Life.’ The message that was being brought across was that now is the time to stop gang war and we have been doing great as the homicide rate has gone down since 2003. The sad part is that overdoses of heroin in the Surrey area have resulted in

kids dying and the police have seized over 60,000 kilos of cocaine. During the end of the conference, the panel board of the conference asked the audience, “Where do we go from here?” The panel board then also discussed bridging policy and practice regarding possible strategies for reducing youth violence and gang involvement. There were also many individuals that I had the pleasure to meet during the conference: Education Minister Amrik Virk, RCMP Staff Sgt. Baltej Dhillon, Surrey Mayor Diane Watts, Indira Prahst, Balwant

Sanghera, Kathreen Riel, Jinny Sims, Sarjeet Purewal, Dave Hayer, Barinder Rasode, Devon Knight, Sandra Alfonso, Catherine Parlee and Preeti Hothi, among others. I also made connections with youth members who attended the youth conference and overall it was a great learning experience. The lesson I learned is that follow and apply preventive approach with youth rather than intervention. (Some photos by Chandra Bodalia / Some photos supplied by Harnoor Gill)

PRIME Minister Stephen Harper on Monday issued the following statement to mark Eid alFitr: “Laureen and I would like to extend warm greetings to Muslims in Canada and around the world as they gather to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. “On this important occasion, Muslims gather with family and friends to celebrate the Feast of the Breaking of the Fast over a period of three days to give thanks for the spiritual renewal and blessings acquired over the past month. Eid alFitr is also a time of almsgiving towards those who are less fortunate than us, and when greetings and gifts are exchanged. “Our country is home to more than one million Muslims, who play an important role in the shaping and building of the free, prosperous and peaceful pluralistic society that Canada is today. “On behalf of all Canadians, I offer best wishes for health and happiness to all those celebrating Eid al-Fitr. “Eid Mubarak!” LEADER of the Official Opposition Tom Mulcair made the following statement: “On behalf of all New Democrats, I would like to offer my best wishes to all Muslims in Canada celebrating Eid-al-Fitr that marks the end of the month of Ramadan. Over the last month, Muslims around the world have honoured their faith and showed their generosity during Ramadan – a time of sharing and compassion. On this occasion of Eid, New Democrats join Muslims in Canada as we renew our shared commitment to social justice, humanitarianism and peace, and celebrate cultural and religious diversity as fundamental Canadian values. To everyone observing Eid al-Fitr, we wish you a wonderful celebration. Eid Mubarak.” LIBERAL of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement: “As Muslims in Canada and around the world gather with family, friends, and community to mark the end of Ramadan, I would like to extend my warm wishes for a joyful holiday. “Eid al-Fitr recognizes the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a time of fasting, spiritual reflection, and recommitment to the principles of charity and compassion. Muslims will come together at the end of this month to take part in the Feast of the Breaking of the Fast. “Over the past month, I have had the great pleasure of joining members of the Muslim community in observing Ramadan, including at an Iftar dinner in Toronto. After witnessing this community coming together and the shared values that unite us, it is clear that Canada is made strong not in spite of our differences, but because of them. “We must also take this opportunity to consider those Muslims around the world who are unable to enjoy a safe and peaceful Eid with loved ones. To those families and communities, I wish them the comfort and blessings that people of all faiths are able to share in Canada. “To all those observing the end of this holy month of spiritual renewal, allow me to wish you Eid Mubarak.”

Raptor’s most devoted fan Nav Bhatia honored by United Sikhs Organization

NAV Bhatia, known as the most devoted fan of the Toronto Raptors and the owner of both Mississauga and Rexdale Hyundai dealerships, was honoured last Saturday in Washington, D.C. at the United Sikhs Gala for his continuous hard work and dedication to the Sikh community. The resonating theme of the evening was the drug crisis currently gripping Punjab. It’s estimated that approximately 73% of youth are currently victims of some type of addiction in Punjab; so the funds from this year’s gala will be used for a de-addiction clinic in Punjab. “I believe the work being done by the United Sikhs is very important. We are our youth, Punjab is our youth and it is the responsibility of our entire community to come together to get these kids on the right path, away from

drugs and back to achieving their dreams,” said Bhatia. Bhatia is no stranger to working with youth and promoting the goodness of Sikhism. He has been integral in educating and liaising with the mainstream community regarding Sikh traditions and Punjabi culture through his work as official South Asian Ambassador for the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. Each year he hosts a Diwali game and a Vaisakhi game with the Toronto Raptors, bringing with him over 3,000 South Asians to each game. For each game he also donates hundreds of tickets to those who would normally never be able to afford a regular priced ticket to see his beloved NBA team. His connection with the NBA franchise has apparently strengthened his connection with today’s kids. “At the end of the gala I was

swarmed by the kids all wanting to take pictures and talk basketball. Shouts of ‘you know Drake’ and ‘you know Vince Carter’ could be heard across the room. Taking an hour to meet and talk to the kids really makes a difference. I am the living example of living right, living drug-free and look what dream I am living. This message really resonates with the kids, really inspires them and their optimism is what inspires me. That is why I come to these galas and host the Raptors games,” said Bhatia. His quote in the New York Times has since become his calling card and sums up what he is about: “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t womanize, I Raptorize.” If Nav’s story is of inspiration it is the story of an immigrant who came here with nothing, worked hard to achieve his goals and was blessed with success very few achieve. Nav has not forgotten his roots and he often notes: “The true legacy of any individual is not how much money he has, but how many people he has helped to succeed.” Always one to hold out a helping hand, Nav is looking forward to continuing to work with the youth in the Greater

Toronto Area to help them achieve their dreams and

begin work with NBA teams outside of Toronto in promot-

The letter was first reported by the Globe and Mail on Monday and it comes just when Muslims are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr. The letter states: “The current conflict in Israel and Gaza is of great concern to anyone who believes in democracy and human rights. “While the world watches in agony, we recognize the need for a ceasefire that leads to long-term security and peace in the region. Israel has the right

to defend itself and its citizens against terrorist attacks. “At this difficult time, let us remember the values we share with Israel: a vibrant, culturally rich democratic nation committed to maintaining the rights of its citizens, regardless of gender or religion. Israel is an example not only to the region, but the world. “Support for Israel abroad makes a difference.” “As the world continues

today issued the following statement: “It is with sorrow that I have learned of the death of Hira, seven years old, Kainaat, eight months old, and their grandmother, Bushra Bibi, all Ahmadiyya Muslims, who fell victim to an attack by a local mob in the area of Kachi-Pump in Gujranwala, Pakistan. They and other members of the local Ahmadi community were attacked simply because of their Ahmadiyya Muslim faith. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased mourning this heartbreaking tragedy. This attack is all the more tragic in that it came at the close of the holy month of Ramadan as families were preparing to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr. “This is only the latest event in a long series of violent, religiously motivated attacks against the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan. It underscores the need to support Pakistani civil society in strengthening pluralism, human rights and the rule of law. “Canada strongly denounces such violence, and we call for Pakistani authorities to ensure the personal safety of all Pakistani citizens, including Ahmadis, and to uphold the right of all religious communities to practice their faith in peace and security, free from violent attack.”

South Asians form majority of Field Hockey Canada’s Under-18 roster for Youth Olympics FIELD Hockey Canada has confirmed the roster of nine athletes and three staff members nominated to represent Canada as part of Under-18 Field Hockey Team set to compete in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games from August 16 to 28. The majority of players are South Asians including the captain Brandon Pereira. “Above all else, Canadian International field hockey athletes aspire to compete successfully for Canada at the Olympic Games,” says Jeff Sauve, CEO of Field Hockey Canada. “The opportunity for these nine athletes to compete in a major Youth Games, organized by the International Olympic Committee, will serve Canada well in the future. In the short term, this will be an amazing opportunity for these hard-working and talented young men.” The team will compete in a new adaptation of field hockey, called Hockey 5s, which is meant to be a highscoring, fast and physical

Brandon Pereira form of field hockey. It is played outdoors, on a smaller pitch enclosed by small shin-high boards. “We want to be skillful, hardworking and we want to do whatever it takes to win,” says head coach Inderpal Sehmbi. “We have picked nine good players who all have different elements they bring to the table.” “In this game, because you can score from everywhere,

everyone has to be a threat.” Canada qualified for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games by winning a silver medal at the 2014 Youth Pan American Games in February, and was then selected by the Canadian Olympic Committee as the lone men’s team sport to represent Canada at the Games. "We have our Canadian Olympic Committee to thank for making this opportunity come to fruition,” adds Sauve. “It is a great source of pride that we are the team sport of choice representing Canada at the Youth Olympics."

The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) is a professional kabaddi league in India, based on the format of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The first edition of the tournament features eight franchises consisting of players from around the world. The eight teams are playing in a caravan format, travelling together to all eight venues to play a total of 60 league matches. The top scoring four teams at the end of the group stages will play in the semi finals at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on August 29 and the finals will be held on August 31. The eight franchise teams competing for the cup are Bengal Warriors, Bengaluru Bulls, Dubang Delhi, Jaipur Pink Panthers (owned by Bollywod Superstar Abhishek Bachchan), Patna Pirates, Puneri Paltan, Telugu Titans and U Mumba.

Last Honda Celebration of Light event on Saturday THE last of three Honda Celebration of Light events takes place on Saturday (August 2) at English Bay in Vancouver. Japan presents the last show. The U.S. and France presented the first and second shows. For more information visit: www.hondacelebrationoflight.com On Wednesday night, Vancouver Police estimated that a crowd of about 250,000 to 300,000 attended. It was a mix of families, students, tourists, and locals from all over the Lower Mainland. Vancouver Police said they continued to show a visible presence to deter disturbances and worked closely with other police agencies and emergency services so those attending the event felt safe. While police officers had to deal with a few incidents, the large crowd was once again generally well-behaved. There were 197 liquor pour outs, 26 liquor seizures, five weapon seizures, two arrests for intoxication in public, four arrests for breach of peace and five other arrests, and 50 violation tickets and four by-law tickets were issued.

Each game will be shot by state of the art equipment with 12 cameras and the broadcast will also feature ultramotion, overhead shots and super slomotion. The league has the formal backing of the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF), the Asian Kabaddi Federation (AKF) and the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI), who will be closely associated with this event. ATN will carry all 60 games LIVE on 6 ATN channels in 2 different languages. CBN and ATN Cricket Plus will air the games in English language, whereas four other ATN chan-

two teams take turns to send a raider to the other's territory, tag members of the opposing team, and return "home" without being blocked by defenders on the other side. It is the national game of Bangladesh and the state game of Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh in India and is also popular in Pakistan.

nels will air the games in Hindi/Punjabi. "We are very excited to bring this first ever Professional Kabaddi League to Canada on six of our channels. We have always tried to give our viewers different programming options from time to time and I am sure this league will be very well received as it is one of the most popular sport in South Asia," said Dr. Shan Chandrasekar, President and CEO of ATN. ON THE ROAD with HARVEY

Plan ahead for a fun, safe summer vacation BY HARVEY KOONER ICBC Road Safety Coordinator

SUMMER has arrived and for many of us that means it’s time to slow down and enjoy a much needed vacation. Whether you’re staying close to home or hitting the road for a getaway, you’ll probably be filling your days with activities you love, trying new ones or just relaxing in the sunshine. While we all spend time planning our annual summer vacations, it’s important that we also plan for a safe ride home if any of our activities involve alcohol. In B.C., an average of 44 people are killed in impairedrelated crashes during the summer months every year. These crashes could be prevented by simply planning ahead and making the smart choice to not drive if you’ve been drinking. When you’re away from home in new surroundings, you may not be familiar with all of the options available to get home safely after you’ve had a few drinks. Is there taxi service? Does the hotel offer a shuttle service? Is transit running when you want to head home? Program local taxi and shuttle service numbers into your cell phone and keep transit information handy. Check your options before you head out so you can relax knowing you have a plan to

get home safely. During the summer months in the Southern Interior, the population swells with visitors to hotspots like Kelowna, Osoyoos and Penticton and so do the number of people killed in impaired related crashes. If you’re lucky enough to be heading to the Interior, you’ll probably want to enjoy a day at the beach, play a round a golf or visit

some of the stunning wineries. If you decide to visit a winery to experience the gorgeous lake views, gourmet food and delicious

wines, make sure you have a designated driver before you start your wine tour. Remember that a true designated driver is one who doesn’t drink. Or book one of the many tour operators and let them take care of the driving for you. You might also choose to stay in town to spend some time at local beaches, patio restaurants, outdoor festivals or to attend a wedding. If you find yourself without a safe ride home, remember it’s never too late to call a taxi, take transit or call a sober friend. Wherever your vacation plans take you, make sure you have fun and plan ahead if you’ll be drinking. And remember to take your turn as the designated driver this summer to help your friends and family get home safely.

Opening of West Newton Community Park in Surrey THE City of Surrey on Saturday officially opened West Newton Community Park, a new 3.5 hectare community space featuring a playground, walking loops, park shelters, and Surrey’s first cricket field with natural grass wickets.

The construction of this park marks one of the final projects of the $700 million Build Surrey Program with a total of $2.8 million invested in its design and construction. “West Newton Community Park has been developed to

meet the growing needs of the community," said Mayor Dianne Watts. "The new amenities will ensure residents will have ample opportunity for social, recreational, and fitness activities.” Cricket is a very popular sport in Surrey; it has the secondhighest number of registered cricketers in Canada, after Toronto. The natural grass wickets, field house, and onsite parking facilities make this site suitable for tournament play, and therefore is a potential regional sport tourism destination, the City noted in its press release. “West Newton Community Park is a great addition to the community of Newton,” said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and

Sports Tourism Committee. “Residents of all ages will enjoy its beautiful amenities, and given the popularity of cricket both in Surrey and internationally, it will also serve as a unique sports tourism destination with considerable eco-

nomic benefits.” The opening celebration included cricket demonstrations, face painting, and entertainment. For more information about West Newton Community Park visit www.surrey.ca/parks

Federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair’s statement on Mela Gadri Babian Da LEADER of the Official Opposition Tom Mulcair made the following statement on Friday on Mela Gadri Babian Da: “On this day of festivities for Canada’s Punjabi community, I would like to send my warmest wishes to all Canadians of Punjabi descent, along with their

families. This time last year, Catherine and I were lucky enough to join in the traditional celebrations in Surrey, B.C. The community welcomed us with open arms, and we experienced the vitality and exuberance of Punjabi culture first hand. This year also marks the 100th

anniversary of the Komagata Maru tragedy. This boat, carrying thousands of immigrants from India, was held for two months in the port of Vancouver before being sent back manu militari to South Asia. The NDP has continued to urge Canadian Parliament to offer an official apology for hav-

ing approved these laws that prevented Indian immigrants from entering the country. Today, I would like to highlight the perseverance and endurance that Punjabi Canadians have shown throughout their proud history. Punjabiyan Dee Peh-chaan, Canada Dee Shaan!

Cloverdale another example of failed speculative development policies of Surrey First, says Doug McCallum CLOVERDALE West Village is strewn with cement blocks, unfinished sidewalks and dirty mattresses while the developer of the project – the city-owned Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC) – continues to sit idle as businesses close and residents become increasingly frustrated, says Surrey mayoral hopeful Doug McCallum. Initially promised as a revitalization for the former Cloverdale Plaza Mall site, the first phase of the proposed multi-phase residential and retail project was shelved in 2012 due to poor market conditions. While site servicing concluded six months ago, there has since been no explanation about the complete absence of inactivity. This is a perfect example of how the SCDC’s mandate and model is not only flawed, but working against the interests of residents, according to McCallum. “The City of Surrey and

the Surrey City Development Corporation should have no part in speculative real estate development,” says McCallum. “Cloverdale is a historic party of the City of Surrey, and the lackadaisical attitude that is being demonstrated with this project and its delays is shameful.” On February 1, 2012, SCDC president and CEO Jim Cox told the Surrey Leader newspaper that “we’re going to start a different phase” and that “we hope by undertaking some activity there that the world’s going to see that it’s a developing place and more than an empty parking lot.” As of July 28, 2014, none of that activity has occurred, with the project start date still undefined. The SCDC’s recently released financial statement for 2013 shows a net debt for the fiscal year of over $96 million, following a net debt

for 2012 of over $57 million. With investments such as $20 million of public money put into the Central City Brewery, the SCDC has demonstrated that its priorities, fiscal management and respect for Surrey residents are non-existent. Revelations like the SCDC approaching the brewery to secure land and finance the project, while developments in Cloverdale remain stalled because of “market conditions”, is impetus for the SCDC to be eliminated, according to McCallum. “Mr. Cox states that ‘with

risk comes potential reward’ in reference to the real estate projects that are gambling with millions of taxpayers’ money. This is not right,

McCallum. McCallum promises to dismantle the Surrey City Development Corporation if elected mayor.

particularly when you have areas like Cloverdale being left in the lurch with unfinished and unsightly work that has no end in sight,” sayd

Federal funding for arts and culture assists British Columbia groups NINA Grewal, MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells, joined with Canadian Heritage and

Official Languages Minister Shelly Glover to announce $1,916,334 in funding for arts

and culture in the Lower Mainland and surrounding communities. “Canada is a nation that boasts a mosaic of cultures and a diverse heritage,” said Grewal. “Through this investment in local festivals, arts, and cultural organizations, our government is ensuring that British Columbians of all ages have the opportunity to celebrate Canada’s rich history and culture, while also benefitting the local economy.” Altogether, the almost $2 million in funding will support 16 projects throughout B.C., including five in Surrey. The projects – which include theatre upgrades to enable the presentation of technically sophisticated shows, promoting the vitality of the province’s French-speaking minority communities, celebrating festivals, and ensuring access to a diverse range of Canadian-authored books in Canada and abroad – are

diverse, support the local economy, and provide significant potential for communities throughout British Columbia. The recipient organizations are receiving these funds through several of Canada’s cultural programs, such as the

Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the Canada Book Fund, and the Canada Periodical Fund, which the Federal government permanently renewed in the 2014 Budget. “Arts and culture organizations contribute to the cultural strength of our communities

and enrich the quality of life of all Canadians. By supporting these organizations, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and support our arts, culture, and heritage,” said Grewal.

B.C. leads country in small business optimism for third straight month ACCORDING to the latest monthly Business Barometer survey results from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), entrepreneurs in British Columbia are the most confident in Canada for the third month in a row. The Business Barometer index in B.C. dropped 1.4 points in July to 72.3, but still leads all provinces, and remains more than nine points higher than the national index of 63.2, the lowest Canada-wide confidence level registered since last December. “B.C. continues to lead the country in small business confidence. But the good news doesn’t stop there. A deeper dive into the survey results

also shows hiring intentions remain strong, and entrepreneurs continue to hold a positive view of the general state of business in the province”, states CFIB Provincial Director, Richard Truscott. Entrepreneurs in British Columbia (72.3) are once again the most confident in the country about the economy and the future prospects for their business, followed by Newfoundland (72.2), Alberta (69.4), Manitoba (64.7), Saskatchewan (63.5), New Brunswick (61.7), Ontario (60.9), Quebec (60.5), Nova Scotia (59.6) and PEI (59.5). Short-term hiring plans slipped three points in July, largely due to the coming end of the usual summer hiring

seasons, with 24 per cent of entrepreneurs said they were planning to add full-time staff in the next three months, compared to only six per cent expecting a decline. Also, 41 per cent of B.C. entrepreneurs in July described the general state of their business as ‘good’, up one point over June, while just 9 per cent said it was ‘bad’, down two points from the previous month. In terms of the main business challenges in B.C., 36 per cent of business owners surveyed identifying a shortage of skilled labour as their limiting sales or production growth, while 34 per cent said it was insufficient domestic demand.

Terry Fox is the most admired British Columbian Campbell and Clark tied as worst heads of government since 1986 AS British Columbians get ready to observe BC Day, a new Insights West poll has found that Terry Fox is the most revered figure from the province. The online survey of a representative provincial sample also shows that most British Columbians feel more affinity towards their urban neighbours in Cascadia than to the residents of Canada’s two largest municipalities. Heroes British Columbians were asked to think of people, living or dead, who are from or are associated with British Columbia, and then select the one person that they admire most. Athlete and activist Terry Fox received the most mentions (171), followed by environmentalist David Suzuki (52), longest-serving provincial premier W.A.C. Bennett (40), Paralympian and philanthropist Rick Hansen (31) and businessman Jim Pattison (20). Politics When asked to name the best head of government the province has had since August 1986, twoin-five British Columbians (40%) cannot pick anyone. Only three of the recent premiers are in double-digits: Mike Harcourt (19%), Gordon Campbell (13%) and Bill Vander Zalm (11%). When asked about the worst premier of the past three decades, Gordon Campbell and Christy Clark are tied for first place (both at 25%), followed by Glen Clark (18%) and Bill Vander Zalm (13%). “British Columbians have an easier time selecting the recent heads of government they dislike,” says Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs, at Insights West. “The level of undecided respondents on the Best Premier question is 40%, but just 6% on the Worst Premier question.” The People In an open-ended question, the words used the most by British Columbians to describe what makes their province unique are beautiful, nature, diverse, scenery and geography. Two thirds of British Columbians (68%) think they have more in common with the people of Seattle and Portland than with those in Toronto or Montreal, and 70% believe the views of British Columbians are different from the rest of Canada. Still, only 13% consider that British Columbia would be better off as its own country. Nine-in-ten British Columbians (92%) say they are proud of the province they live in, but only 17% consider themselves “British Columbians first, and Canadians second.” In addition, 84% of residents believe they will stay in British Columbia for the rest of their lives, and 66% think their children will reside in the province. Finally, when asked to describe

BCCLA welcomes top court’s ruling on ‘Mr. Big’ sting ops CARMEN Cheung, senior counsel at the BC Civil Liberties Association, reacting to the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling establishing new limits on police use of ‘Mr. Big’ sting operations on Thursday, said: “The Supreme Court's new test for Mr. Big confessions recognizes the serious concerns we have about the reliability of these statements, which are often obtained through inducement of substantial reward and veiled threat of violence. “The risk of wrongful conviction associated with the use of unreliable and prejudicial statements cannot be understated. “We hope that the Court's decision today will help ensure the reliability of evidence in criminal proceedings and help rein in some of the more abusive aspects of Mr. Big operations.” The BCCLA was an intervenor in the case.

Have Your Say, Surrey, urges Councillor Barinder Rasode SURREY City Councillor Barinder Rasode has launched a new online survey to connect with the community, and gather feedback about issues and priorities in the City of Surrey. “I want to open up the channels of communication and

bring the community into the decision-making process,” said Rasode. “It’s about giving people a voice and connecting people to government.” She adds this is the first in a series of surveys that will be posted on her website. “We all have a stake and a role

to play in our city, and we need to hear from the community to ensure local needs are being met,” said Rasode. “Over the past six years, since I was elected to City Council, I have made it a key priority to deliver new tools to communicate and engage with the public.

And, these surveys are the next step in that process.” Last month, Rasode launched the Surrey Community Hub and a new website to connect with people online and in-person, as well as organized a number of dialogue events and walking tours with residents to

discuss key issues. The next phase of her summer engagement series will include additional dialogue events, walking tours, online surveys, and a telephone town hall. To take the online survey, visit: www.barinderrasode.com/online_survey

Smoke alarms save lives, say VFRS after fatal fire ON Saturday, July 26 at 8:30 a.m. Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services responded to a fire at 1060 Howe Street where a 60-year-old male was found with second and third degree burns. He passed away on Sunday. Fire crews were able to extin-

guish the blaze quickly, but there was extensive fire, smoke and water damage to one suite. This is the second fire related death for 2014. The fire was accidental in nature and there are no other injuries to report. VFRS said: “Smoke alarms

save lives. Press the test button on your smoke alarm once a month to ensure it is working. If it has a battery, change it once a year. If your smoke alarm is more than ten years old, it’s time to change it.” For more fire safety information, visit vfrs.ca

Priorities: From Cars to Computers?

By Cedric Hughes

ALTHOUGH the modern automobile was essentially invented at the end of the 19th century, finetuning of the basic technology along with Henry Ford’s ‘everyman’ pricing in the early 20th century secured ‘the automobile age’ label for most of the rest of the century. At the end of the 20th century, however, another invention appeared that with fine-tuning and increasing affordability in the 21st century has likely attached ‘the computer age’ label to the decades ahead. Today we are still in the midst of this label change with new realities and potentialities fascinating to contemplate. For one thing, computerization has changed almost everything about the ‘thingness’ of automobiles: the way they are designed and manufactured, their functionality, fuel efficiency, reliability, durability, and crashworthiness, and even the way they are marketed and distributed, and at their

‘end of life’ deconstructed and recycled. As Road Rules has noted before, even a relatively inexpensive 2014 sub-compact is a marvel of comfort, safety, fuel efficiency and reliability. As the embodiment of their original inventors’ visions, objectively, cars have never been better. Subjectively though, our love affair with the automobile seems to be over. The should-be-next generation of car buyers, the Millennials—the baby-boomers’ children born in the 1980s and 1990s who are the next wave of income-earners and consumers —are not getting drivers licenses and aren’t buying cars at anywhere near the rates the same age group did even a decade ago. In North America and Europe, cell phones, tablets, and laptops are replacing car keys as the means to attaining freedom, social status and social connectivity. Shopping, socializing, being entertained, learning and staying informed—mobility is no longer an essential requirement for engaging in many activities. This is a complex phenomenon, however, and other factors are also at work. The Millennials are perhaps the first generation whose parents acted

as daily taxi service providers, perhaps devaluing completely the ‘convenience factor’ of car accessibility. Graduated licensing is a long process. And then, when the time comes to buy or lease their own vehicle, while purchase and leasing costs may be relatively reasonable, fuel, parking, and insurance costs are high, especially insurance for young people. Traffic congestion is a big discouragement. Young people love to travel abroad but are smartly taking public transit to the airport. Young drivers tend to engage in the riskiest driving behaviours but persistent educational messaging and stricter laws expressly targeting the most dangerous driving behaviours like drinking and driving, drug impaired driving, street racing, and excessive speeding are likely discouraging some from even bothering to get behind a wheel. Millennials are familiar with discussions about reducing their “carbon footprint”, hence their interest in sustainable modes of transportation, especially in cities. Public transit usage is increasing and more people are choosing to live downtown and walk or cycle to work, shop, and socialize.

The added benefit of these alternatives is the built-in fitness factor and the opportunity to perhaps be part of a closer community of like-minded young urbanites. And when only a car will do, new short-term car rental

services like Car2Go meet this need efficiently and inexpensively. "The Road Rules" strives to provide helpful information about driving in British Columbia. We welcome your comments on our published articles and
