Jagmit was only in Grade 9 and he gained seven kg to compete in the 48 kg weight class. Last year, he had bagged gold in the 41 kg weight class. “He’s still skinny,” Mann said, adding that he was still very strong. Navdeep, a Grade 10 student, gave an outstanding performance at the championships,
not allowing any wrestler to score a single point against him. Mann called him a promising athlete with a good chance to go to the Pan Am tournament. Mann says both Jagmit and Navdeep are now preparing for the cadet juvenile nationals that take place in the second week of April in New Brunswick.

KLM United U18 Girls defeats CMF Edge 2-0 to win the 2015 BC Coastal Girls Soccer League Championship BY INDIRA PRAHST Team Manager KLM United U18 Girls KUDOS to the KLM United U18 girls who defeated CMF Edge 20 to win the 2015 BC Coastal Girls Soccer League Championship. After their summer practice last summer with Dashmesh soccer team, the girls practiced twice a week to prepare for the season build on their talents. The girls have been role models to a younger generation of
girls interested in soccer, where they learn discipline, teamwork and competition. But the team also had fun with their summer trip to Penticton to forge bonds with team members. The success of Team United is rooted in the dedication of the girls, committed coaches, head coach Ray Goldenchild and assistant coaches Raju Dhaunkal and Leung Seto, and the support of parents, in particular, Louise Seto. It is really encouraging and inspiring to
The victorious KLM United U18 Girls Team: (Back row) assistant coach Leung Seto, Hema Chodha, assistant coach Raju Dhaunkal, Elizabeth Ehebald, Pavan Purewal, Joyti Dhesi, Sharan Dhillon, Harmeen Cheema, Preety Sumra and head coach Ray Goldenchild. (Front row) Jaskiran Dhaunkal, Annette Seto, Amarpreet Randhawa, Sukhkiran Dhaunkal, Asahi Ng, Puneet Johal and Monique Rai. (Lying down) Goalie Jasmine Bhander. (Inset) Natasha Prahst. Photo submitted see how the commitment of Goldenchild and his belief in the girls led to their success. He, along with the assistant coaches, is collectively helping to raise the next generation through the world of soccer where there are indeed ample role positive models, especially in the South Asian community. My daughter Natasha has been on this team for several years
as have most of the other players and I can attest to this firsthand seeing how the girls in addition to their love for soccer, have developed myriad life skills. They have supported each other during times of injury and moments of sadness, battled against prejudgements about South Asians, including their soccer coach who is of African descent (sym-
bolic and personal racism), development of a strong selfesteem and a will to succeed. What I have learned about the world of soccer is an element of selflessness, of giving back to the community through tireless work by the coaches and keeping the spirit of sport alive. KLM United deserved this cup and they have made the community proud.
Five U.S. spies, and two each from India, China and Sweden kicked out of Canada from 2004 to 2014 BELIEVE it or not, the U.S. – not China – is Canada’s worst enemy when it comes to spying. A Toronto Star report on
Tuesday said a Canada Border Services Agency document released under the Access to Information shows that in the past 10 years
(2004-2014) 21 people were barred from Canada for “engaging in an act of espionage” against Canada or its interests.
Interestingly, the two spies from China were kicked out in 2014 and there were no cases for the nine years before that.
Two spies each from India and Sweden were also removed from Canada. One spy each from Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Malawi,
Mongolia, Russia, Rwanda, Tunisia, Uganda and Venezuela were also hoofed out.

Police identify Surrey homicide victim as Michael Donald Amy of Abbotsford THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team on Thursday identified the victim of last week’s homicide in Surrey as Michael Donald Amy, 34, of Abbotsford. Amy’s body was found in a vehicle at about 9:50 a.m. on Friday, February 27 in the 9500 block of 139th Street of the City Centre area of Surrey. After an
initial investigation it was determined the circumstances were suspicious at which point IHIT were called in. The Province newspaper had reported earlier in the week that their police sources had told them that the victim was Mike Russell, the brother of Edward “Skeeter” Russell who announced it through social
media. Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said: “It is our belief at this time that this was not a random act.” Police sources told The VOICE that though Abbotsford Police had had interaction with Amy, he was only convicted for mischief in relation to a 2011 case. There were as such no serious incidents.

Abbotsford’s conflict between two South Asian groups flares up again, police issue warning A house belonging to a South Asian family was shot at on Monday at about 9:30 p.m. in the 31400 block of Southern Drive in west Abbotsford. Police responded after receiving calls from neighbours and collected evidence from the scene including bullet casings. Neighbours reported hearing vehicles flee from the residential street quickly after the sound of gunfire. Fortunately, no one was injured. Police sources told The VOICE on Tuesday that they believe it involves two South Asian groups. On Wednesday, Abbotsford Police Department said in a press release: “One of the homes struck by bullets is associated to a known South Asian gang member. Occupants of that residence have not cooperated with the APD investigation and some of the information provided has actually been misleading. Although the motive for the shooting is still unknown, this does appear to be a targeted incident. Constable Ian MacDonald added: “The investigation cannot exclude the possibility that this shooting incident is related to other recent events. The Abbotsford Police Department is extremely concerned about potential escalating tensions and the threats to public safety that this incident could represent. Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225,

director of civil forfeiture. But the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has so far not announced any charges in the murder case.

text them at 222973 (abbypd), or call Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-8477. IN January, The VOICE reported that a civil suit filed by the Director of B.C. Civil Forfeiture in B.C. Supreme Court in December to claim two vehicles – a white Nissan Altima and a blue Nissan Altima – that were allegedly used in a shootout in which Harwindip Singh Baringh, 18, was killed in Abbotsford last October, has revealed that the incident was allegedly a clash between the Chahil and Dhaliwal crime groups. Sources have told The VOICE that the conflict is an extension of the one going on in Vancouver’s South Slope that this newspaper has been covering extensively for the past year along with the Abbotsford situation. Baringh was found shot dead in the driver’s seat of a dark coloured SUV in the 30500 block of Sparrow Drive in
West Abbotsford after police responded at 7:45 p.m. on October 2 to reports of shots fired in the area of Sparrow Drive and Goldfinch Street. No other potential victims or suspects were found. A vehicle or two were reported to have sped away. The court document claims that Baringh was driving with a passenger in a Jeep Grand Cherokee that evening while his associates were following in a blue 2007 Altima. Surveillance cameras reportedly showed the Jeep and the blue Altima were following a white Acura and a white Altima. The court document alleges that the occupants of the Jeep and blue Altima “were ambushed by occupants of the white Acura and the white Altima at a turn. Gunshots were exchanged between the occupants of the four vehicles and finally three of the vehicles took off, while the Jeep remained at the

Police had been targeting the fentanyl drug trade in the Lower Mainland, an initiative kickstarted in October 2014 through a joint forces operation named Project Tainted. On Tuesday, police announced that eight people have been arrested as a result of the project, with additional warrants being issued for suspects who were not located during the searches. Those charged so far: * Raymond Ranu, 28, eight counts of trafficking and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking; * Yaseen Williams, 26, two counts of trafficking; * Walter McCormick, 50, two counts of trafficking and four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking; * Shazhada Khan, 45, eight counts of trafficking; * Richard Smallboy, 23, five counts of trafficking; * Wesley Lau, 27, 16 counts of trafficking; * Christopher Diabikulu, 22, one count of traf-
ficking; * Maboso Molemba, 23, 12 counts of trafficking and one count of assault causing bodily harm (Burnaby); * Mangongo Molemba, 23, two counts of trafficking; and * Maksym Pefti, 22, two counts of trafficking, and possession for the purpose of trafficking, attempt murder (Burnaby), use of restricted firearm (Burnaby), unlawfully discharge firearm (Burnaby) and possession of prohibited firearm (Burnaby). On February 17, Project Tainted culminated with the execution of 11 search warrants throughout Vancouver, Burnaby and North Vancouver, in a coordinated effort by partner agencies, including the North Vancouver RCMP and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU). Seizures: 7 vehicles; $215,000 cash; pill press; 13,000 oxycodone; 29,000 fentanyl pills; 147,000 pills; believed to be Alprazolam; 503,000

coloured pills (yet to be analyzed); 9.5 kg of crack cocaine; 5.5 kg of powdered cocaine; 19.5 kg of marijuana; 1 kg of methamphetamine; 3 kg of hash; .5 kg of heroin; 2,200 flaps of heroin; various other drugs including steroids and methamphetamine; various drug paraphernalia; 4 guns; 2 replica guns; and 1 bulletproof vest. Enforcement efforts have been focused specifically on individuals and groups producing and distributing drugs laced with the deadly chemical. For the takedown of the project, both the RCMP North Vancouver Detachment Strike Force and Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit contributed resources vital to the successful searches and arrests. “The partnerships and collaboration of law enforcement resources in the Lower Mainland was critical to the success of this investigation and the coordinated takedown action,” said Chief Superintendent Kevin deBruyckere, head of the RCMP Federal Policing Program in BC. “This project highlights the force-multiplying capabilities of such cooperative operations, which effectively served federal, provincial and multiple municipal initiatives.” Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid or painkiller similar to heroin, but 50 to 100 times more toxic than other narcotics, was associated with one-quarter of over 300 overdose deaths in BC in 2014. Users had either knowingly or unknowingly consumed fentanyl that was mixed with a variety of other drugs. Fentanyl has shown up in liquids, powders and pills, and can be masked in virtually any consumable product. Fentanyl-laced marijuana, heroin, oxycodone and other party drugs, have resulted in the deaths of many occasional drug users. The drug does not discriminate, as overdoses have been seen in all segments of society.

Coquitlam RCMP dismantle sophisticated theft and fraud ring allegedly operated by Alvin Chand IN January 2013, the Prolific Target Team of Coquitlam RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence in the 700 block of Capital Court in the Citadel Heights area of Port Coquitlam. At the time, a large scale credit card factory was located and seized. Police also found a significant amount of stolen mail, ID cards, stolen property, a firearm, controlled substances and other illegal property. As a result, Port Coquitlam resident Alvin Chand was charged and later pled guilty to a series of criminal charges. Chand was sentenced to one year in custody and one year of probation. RCMP Cpl. Scott Grimmer said Wednesday that upon
Alvin Chand All photos by RCMP Chand’s release in February 2014, it did not take long for the area surrounding his residence to start showing signs of criminal activity and became a source of neighbourhood complaints. In late 2014 and early 2015, the Citadel Heights area was identified as a crime hotspot for a range of property crime by Coquitlam RCMP crime analysts. The Prolific Target Team
immediately implemented a crime reduction tactical plan by targeting a person named Justin Roach. Roach was later arrested by the team and it was alleged that he committed several offences in relation to possession of stolen mail. He had also been observed accompanying Chand on many occasions. Roach is facing 21criminal charges. On February 19, the Prolific Target Team executed another search warrant at Chand’s residence. This time, investigators located what they believe to be a fully functioning credit card factory and seized the following: * Equipment for making, creating and altering identification and credit cards * Stolen mail from around the Lower Mainland * A loaded hand gun and extra ammunition * A shot gun and extra ammunition * More than $10,000 cash * Stolen property from around the Lower Mainland * Tools used for stealing mail
* One high-end plasma cutter and two torque multiplier * Controlled substances * A high-end stolen bicycle * A stolen motorcycle. Alvin Chand was arrested and is facing the following charges: * Possession of a loaded restricted firearm * Possession of another person’s identity information for a fraudulent purpose * Theft of mail * Mischief to Canada Post box. More charges are pending against Chand. Investigators have confirmed the hand gun seized is a Glock 17 9 mm pistol, which was one of the firearms stolen in late 2012 at a sporting goods store in Port Coquitlam. If you live around Chand’s residence in the 700 block of Capital Court in Port Coquitlam and witnessed anything suspicious in the past year up to the day he was arrested on February 19, police are asking you to contact the Prolific Target Team at 604-945-1550 with any information.

Ban on India's Daughter documentary disappointing, says World Sikh Organization THE World Sikh Organization of Canada said on Thursday that it’s disappointed by the Government of India’s decision to ban the documentary India's Daughter about the savage 2012 gang rape and murder of a student in Delhi. The
documentary explores the culture of rape in India as well as the background and mindset of the perpetrators of the 2012 crime that shook the country. Indian Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh announced the

ban on India's Daughter, alleging that it encourages and incites violence against women. Charges have been filed under the Indian Penal Code under sections dealing with insult to the modesty of a woman, creating public mis-
chief, inciting breach of peace and intent to create fear or alarm in the general public. The documentary was aired Wednesday night by the BBC and is scheduled to air in Canada on the CBC's The Passionate Eye on Sunday evening, to coincide with International Women's Day. WSO President, Dr. Amritpal Singh Shergill said: “The documentary India's Daughter provides an insightful look at the factors which contribute to India's rape crisis. Rather than trying to confront the culture of rape that exists in India, Indian politicians are more interested in silencing and censoring those that speak out. India must continue to mature into a democracy that values freedom of expression and tolerates criticism and dissent. WSO Senior Vice President Kulmeet Singh Sangha said: “The experience of the filmmakers behind India's Daughter is mirrored by that of human rights activists across
India. Serious human rights issues are ignored and those who wish to raise awareness are intimidated and muzzled. India's Daughter raises issues critical to the safety of India's women. Those issues must be discussed and debated, not swept under the carpet." IANS adds: New Delhi: The Editors Guild of India on Friday appealed to the government to revoke the ban on airing of the BBC documentary on the December 16, 2012 gang-rape, terming the move "wholly unwarranted". In a statement, the Guild said the documentary, 'Storyville: India's daughter', portrayed the courage, sensibility and liberal outlook of a family traumatized by the brutality inflicted on their daughter, the continuing "shameful attitudes" towards women among the interviewed rapist as well as the educated, including the defence lawyers. It said their rationale that the
ban was in the interest of justice and public order as the film "created a situation of tension and fear amongst women". The statement also said that the convict would use the media to further his case in the appeal that was sub judice, seems to be an afterthought. "The message that emerges from the documentary is wholly positive and its power is such as to make people reexamine their own attitudes and the attitudes of people around them," it said. The Guild appealed to the central government to revoke the ban and enable the people to view "the positive and powerful documentary touching on the freedom, dignity and safety of women". The documentary, by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, has triggered an uproar over the interview of Mukesh Singh, one of the six rapists of the 23year-old paramedical student.

Another Hindu temple attacked in Washington state A Sanatan Dharam temple was vandalised in Washington state with windows broken and the word “Fear” painted on it, less than a fortnight after another temple was attacked, reports IANS. Members of the the Sanatan Dharma Temple in Kent, about 30 km from Seattle, who came for worship Friday “were greeted by shards of broken glass after vandals targeted the building,” KING5-TV, a Seattle NBC affiliate, reported. According to the temple web site, “Amalaki Ekadashi” was to be
observed Saturday. Bricks were used to smash every window of the building and parts of the structure were ripped apart, said KOMO-TV, an ABC affiliate in Seattle. “The crime is small-minded with big intentions, shattering calm with hate,” the station’s reporter, John Humbert, said. “Silence isn’t the answer.” On February 15, the Hindu Temple Cultural Centre in

Bothell city, about 35 km from Seattle, found a swastika painted on it and “Get Out” scrawled in large letters with spray paint. In the US, white supremacists have adopt-
ed the Nazi swastika as an ideological symbol. The two temple attacks came after President Barack Obama’s criticism of India at an inter-religious prayer meeting earlier in February where he said intolerance there “would have shocked Gandhiji”. Both temples do not have security cameras “and info on the vandals remains elusive,” KOMO-TV said. The incidents are under
police investigation. Several attacks on Hindu temples have taken place across the US in the last few months. In August a murti (idol) of Shiva at the Vishwa Bhavan Hindu Mandir in Monroe in the state of Georgia was desecrated with black paint. The local sheriff ’s office arrested two people in connection with the attack. Between July and October in Loudon County in Virginia, police have documented 17 separate incidents of anti-Hindu vandalism, the Hindu American Foundation said. In a twist to the Kent incident, an Islamic organisation tried to deflect attention away from Hinduism, claiming that the attack was directed against Muslims, even though the building had a large sign, “Kent Hindu Temple.” According to KOMO-TV, Arsalan Bukahari of the Washington Council on American-Islamic Relations said many of

ON THE ROAD with Harvey
Got an idea for a road improvement in your area? We’re listening!
BY HARVEY KOONER ICBC Road Safety Coordinator
YOU may have noticed the new pedestrian countdown timers, sidewalks and protected left turn signals in
Surrey. These are some of the 46 road improvement projects ICBC invested over $1 million in last year to make Surrey roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. Have you noticed an intersection or road in your area that could really benefit from a safety improvement? If so, we’d love to hear from you. You can make your suggestion through icbc.com or contact your local municipality. This year marks the 25th anniversary of ICBC’s road improvement program with over $130 million invested in B.C. roads since 1990. Our engineers review studies, crash data and other information to decide which projects to invest in based on
their ability to make roads safer. We also look at ways to prevent crashes from happening in the first place by making sure safety issues are part of planning for new roadways
and managing traffic. We also consult with road safety experts on new ways to prevent crashes. Some of the new technology we've tested and is now in place in B.C. includes anti-skid road sur-
face treatments, high-intensity signs and larger, more visible traffic signals. While road improvements are an important part of road safety, the majority of crashes are preventable and have
more to do with errors made by road users than road engineering. As drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, we all need to do our part by making smart driving decisions to help prevent crashes.
OPINION: KICK QUEBEC JUDGE OUT! IN my opinion, Quebec Court Judge Eliana Marengo who so ridiculously told Rania El-Alloul in a Montreal courtroom that she had to remove her hijab or she wouldn’t hear her case against the province’s automobile insurance board that had seized her vehicle,
is not fit to be a judge in a multicultural country like Canada. I would suggest she catches a flight to France or wherever else she feels her type of crap will be tolerated. Even Prime Minister Stephen Harper (who himself is being stupid and bigoted by deciding to appeal a
court ruling allowing a Muslim woman to wear a niqab while taking the oath of citizenship even though her face could be verified before the oath-taking by a female) spoke out against the judge’s inappropriate decision, with his spokesperson Stephen Lecce stat-
ing: “If someone is not covering their face, we believe they should be allowed to testify. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair also spoke out against it. Some guys started a fundraiser on social media and they got 400 donations and sur-
passed their goal of $20,000 in just over 24 hours, according to news reports. And the money keeps coming. Hey, guys, buy the judge a one-way ticket out of Canada! – RATTAN MALL

This immersive journey through time offers a new look at some of the world’s most amazing sea creatures. It opened at the Aquarium on Thursday. Through a groundbreaking polymer preservation technique, known as plastination, Sea Monsters Revealed will unveil the dissected bodies of some of the largest deep-sea creatures ever to be featured on dry land. “A first in Canada, Sea Monsters Revealed sparks the imagination of visitors as they receive an up-close and inside look at some of the world’s most elusive and strange aquatic creatures to roam our oceans, said Clint Wright, Vancouver Aquarium senior vicepresident and general manager. “Steeped in history and science, Sea Monsters Revealed takes visitors on a journey of underwater exploration and tells the story of mystical wonders through real specimens preserved through plastination. More than 100 aquatic specimens will be on display at Sea Monsters Revealed, including five full-body creatures. This mesmerizing collection features a goliath grouper, a five-metre long mako shark, a predatory Humboldt squid and a metre-long ocean sunfish, the heaviest bony fish in the world. Legends historically surrounded many of these strange looking sea creatures. At one time, people were afraid of the oceans, believed to be
full of sea monsters. Explore these tales and how they were dispelled centuries later through scientific research, uncovering the truth
about these fascinating creatures, their underwater world and their extraordinary adaptations. The exploration continues with Sea Monsters 4D: A Prehistoric
Adventure, an actionpacked 4-D Experience that takes viewers back 82 million years into prehistoric waters, home to colossal marine reptiles of the dinosaur age and some of the most fascinating creatures that ever lived on Earth. Applying innovative technology, Vancouver Aquarium’s 4-D Experience engages you through sight, sound, scent and touch. Visitors to Sea Monsters Revealed will be guided through a journey that will not only inspire appreciation of the great creatures inhabiting the ocean deep, but also create a better understanding of the role humans play in our natural world. Sea Monsters Revealed that opened on March 5 will be on display until September 7. Learn more at vanaqua.org/seamonsters

New campaign aims to end silence on domestic violence DOMESTIC violence is an issue that affects everyone, yet talking about it is tough. A new radio and social media campaign – #SaySomething – aims to end the silence by encouraging all British Columbians to speak up and learn how they can safely help. In 2013, there were 12,359 police-reported victims of domestic violence, though research suggests this may represent less than 25% of the total number, as the majority of these crimes continue to go unreported. She may be your sister, your best friend, your neighbour or your co-worker. Knowing how and when to speak up – not to mention how to make sure those experiencing abuse stay safe when you do so – can be a delicate balancing act. #SaySomething is a call to action that recognizes how silence can feed into the abusive attitudes and behaviours that enable domestic violence. The campaign seeks not only to raise awareness, but also to provide practical advice and strategies on how and when to safely seek help. The message – that we need to break the silence in order to stop the violence – will be spread through radio spots, multi-lingual promotional videos and online advertising across several social media platforms. A host website − http://www.saysomethingbc.ca/ − provides information and an array of resources for victims, perpetrators, service providers and the bystanders who want to help. Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux on Friday announced the launch of the new campaign with anti-violence partners in Surrey as part of the lead-up to International Women’s Day (March 8). The #SaySomething campaign is intended to work in concert with existing awareness initiatives, such as Be More Than a Bystander, the Moose Hide campaign and B.C.’s Toughest Men. It builds on the momentum of B.C.’s Provincial Domestic Violence Plan, launched in February 2014, and is one of the first steps in government’s broader strategy for a Violence Free B.C. Cadieux said: “Domestic violence is too often an unspoken evil. We may sense that something’s wrong, but we don’t think it’s any of our business so we don’t speak up when we should. This campaign provides easy access to information on safe ways to bring up tough topics and work together to end domestic violence. Please say something and help make B.C. a safer place.” Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton said: “This campaign, focused on domestic violence, is an immediate, early action of the Violence Free BC strategy – the Province’s long-term roadmap to address all forms of violence against women. We all have a role to play in making B.C. safer for women, and this campaign identifies the signs of domestic violence and how to help. Working together, we must strive to prevent violence before it starts, respond to violence when it happens, and help women rebuild from its devastating effects.” Tracy Porteous, Ending Violence Association of BC, said: “Throughout history, domestic and sexual violence against women have thrived in the shadows. Most people don’t speak up because they don’t know what to say, don’t know what to do or know where help can be found. This campaign is another step forward in breaking the silence. Reaching out to those who are struggling will help to shine a light on a subject that has been hidden for too long.” Quick Facts: * From 2004 to 2009, it is estimated that more than 160,000 British Columbians were victims of domestic violence. * From 2004 to 2014, domestic violence claimed the lives of 113 women in B.C an average of 10 women each year. * The social media campaign is being supported with an $80,000 funding commitment. * The B.C. government commits more than $70 million per year in prevention and
intervention services, as well as programs to help families involved in domestic violence and other crimes. * Last year, more than $3.5 million in civil forfeiture grants were used to support vulnerable women. A further $3 million in grants is being directed this year to support anti-violence and prevention initiatives, with a priority focus on violence against women. The Province has also committed to dedicating a portion of civil forfeiture funds in future years to support the Violence Free BC strategy. * The Violence Free BC strategy outlines the path to creating a province where all women have the supports they need to help prevent violence, escape from violence situations, and recover if they have been victims of violence. * In February, government helped open Surrey’s newly integrated Domestic Violence Unit – the sixth of its kind in British Columbia. * The Provincial Domestic Violence Plan, coordinated through the Provincial Domestic Violence Office in consultation with the public and anti-violence stakeholders, is a three-year, $5.5-million plan to make B.C. a safer place for women, children and anyone who has been
affected by domestic violence. * The Provincial Office of Domestic Violence was created in March 2012 as the permanent lead for the B.C. government, focused on
strengthening the services and supports available for children, women and families affected by domestic violence.

BBB’s Top 10 Scams for 2014: Education is the key to protection SCAMMERS, hackers and thieves are among us. The question is, how do we protect ourselves from those who would take our money, our identity and our sense of safety? Education is the key. Learning how to recognize scams and report them to the proper authorities is the surest way to defeat this often faceless enemy. Every year for the last 22 years BBB B.C. has put together a list of the top scams affecting British Columbians. They work alongside their community partners to develop a list identifying which scams are actively phishing for your identity and money. The benefit of these partnerships means the public has more opportunity to become educated than ever before when it comes to these scams. Despite that, losses are on the rise. 2013 saw Canadians lose roughly 53 million dollars to scammers. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre that number hit 70 million in 2014. More websites means more opportunity for fraud. More catastrophe around the world means more charlatans are setting up shop to prey on your good and giving nature. “In today's world, there is even more need to keep educating the public and raise awareness of these issues,” said Danielle Primrose, President of BBB Serving Mainland BC, on Thursday. This year’s BBB Top 10 Scams live largely in the digital world. It is a space that is easier for hackers and fraudsters to set up shop, and they are getting very good at deception. It is easy for these crooks to replicate trusted brands and hit as many potential victims as possible all at once. From developing a sense of trust to steal your money to buoy up a Ponzi scheme, to breaking through IT security and firewalls to exploit the personal data of millions of people, these scammers stop at nothing to make your life miserable. BBB Top 10 Scams: 1. Top Auto Scam Automotive Online Pricing Doing your research on a vehicle before buying is always important. These scammers cash in when a buyer does not do their homework and have the car inspected or check what the car is actually worth. A vehicle history report, a little online sleuthing or a purchase from a licensed dealer can be just the protection you need. Tip: Find out the history of the vehicle before you buy. 2. Top Emotional Scam Disaster Charity Scam A disaster strikes a far off country, or tragedy strikes closer to home. Scammers know we open our wallets in times of need and they have no apathy when it comes to taking your money posing as a fake charity instead. Fraudulent websites pop up when bad things happen. Do not be taken in by slick websites that look like a real chari-
ty. Tip: Donate to organizations you have given to in the past. 3. Top Identity Theft Remote Computer Repair The phone rings, the person on the other end claims to be from software giant Microsoft. They insist your computer is infected with a virus and needs to be fixed. At best they are trying to sell you software that you likely do not need. At worst they are trying to get you to open your computer up to malware in order to steal your identity. Tip: Do not give anyone remote access to your computer unless you initiated contact. 4. Top Social Media Scam Fake Friend Request A friend who is already a Facebook friend wants to be friends...again. Or perhaps the request is from someone you do not know and is not connected to any of your legitimate friends. These scammers want the personal information stored in your profile and often send links to open your computer to malware. Tip: If you question the validity of the request, just turn it down. 5. Top Romance Scam - Catphishing As online dating becomes more popular, so do the scams involving them. Catphishers are after your personal information and your money. Learn to spot a catphisher if you are in the online dating world. They will offer emails and phone numbers right away and the relationship will feel like it is moving too fast. Tip: Meet the person face to face before giving any personal information out. 6. Top Utilities Scam Fake Billing This scam has hit every province in the country. The scammer calls up a business claiming to be from the local hydro service provider. They threaten to cut off power unless an overdue bill is paid within a specified time frame. The odd thing is, they want the bill paid buy Visa Gift Card. Big red flag. Tip: Understand that hydro companies do not do business in this way. 7. Top Finance Scam Online Affinity Fraud The online world offers investment fraudsters a whole new audience to unleash their scams. They join forums, chat rooms or social networking sites to gain the trust of a group. They leverage these contacts to meet face to face which helps them sell their Ponzi scheme. A Ponzi scheme is a ploy to get people to invest in a ‘cannot lose’ business. They use that
money to pay off early investors and eventually the whole thing collapses. Tip: Do not fall for investments that offer no risk or guarantee returns. 8. Top Sales Scam Redirected Robocalls You get a call and a lovely automated voice informs you that you have won $1000 towards your next flight. Often carriers like WestJet are mentioned in the ruse. You are prompted to press a number to go to the next step and find yourself talking to a salesperson pushing cheap Mexican vacation packages. Tip: Do not follow through with robocall prompts. 9. Top Big Data Scam - Big Box Breach These scams have been all over the news and affect a lot of people at once. Big box stores such as Target and Home Depot have fallen vic-
tim to data breach. That means credit and debit card information for millions of consumers land in the hands of computer hackers. Tip: Change your passwords frequently. 10. Top Ad Scam - Fake Online Reviews
Almost all of us seek online reviews before spending our cash or making that reservation. However, a Harvard study found 20% of those reviews are fake. Most review sites do not vet submissions so you have to train yourself on how to spot them. Fake reviews,
often called ‘astroturfing,’ contain over-the-top language such as “Can’t be missed!” or “Life changing!” To visit the website, go to: g o . b b b . o r g / B C bbbtop10scams

Mayors’ Council appoints Jimmy Pattison to lead blue ribbon public accountability committee to oversee funds
THE Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation on Thursday announced the appointment of prominent businessman Jimmy Pattison to head up a blue ribbon public accountability committee to oversee the funds that will be collected if there is a “yes in the transportation and transit referendum.
“We have heard loud and clear from the people of Metro Vancouver on this question. They want assurances that the money collected from the PST increase will go to pay for the critical transportation and transit improvements needed in the region, said Mayors’ Council Chair and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.
“By appointing Mr. Pattison to head up this oversight committee, we are providing voters with a concrete mechanism to monitor and ensure that the funds raised will be used for the infrastructure they are meant to pay for. Pattison agreed to terms of reference for his new position, which include
selecting experts to work with him on the oversight body. “I know how important our transportation and transit system is, both to our needs now, and to the needs of our children and grandchildren, said Pattison. “We need this infrastructure, and the public has a right to transparency and accountability.
Jimmy Pattison is Chairman and CEO of the Jim Pattison Group. Founded in Vancouver more than 50 years ago and with more than 39,000 employees globally, the Jim Pattison Group is the second largest private company in Canada. For more information on the Mayors’ Plan, visit www.mayorscouncil.ca

Most British Columbians (64%) believe it is better to fund services, in order to allow parents to have more opportunities to enroll their children in child care facilities. Only 22% of residents think it is better to provide cash for parents, so they can make a decision on how to allocate the funds for their children. “British Columbians do not regard the new provincial tax credit as the solution to child care,” says Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs, at Insights West. “The public ideologically and pragmatically is more supportive of a scenario that would make more child care spaces available to any British Columbian who requires them.” Three-in-four British Columbians (74%) support the $10aDay proposal, including 83% of those who have had recent experiences with child care. In addition, three-in-five residents would both consider voting for a political party that implemented $10-a-day (63%) and believe the plan is realistic (61%). British Columbians are also keenly aware of some of the advantages that a real investment in child care would bring to the province, including a more effective workforce (83%), benefits to the economy and health care (72%), return on investment (64%) and more tax revenue for the province (63%). “This poll shows the provincial government that voters are ready for the $10aDay Plan to be implemented,” says Sharon Gregson, Spokesperson for the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC. “Children are a non-partisan issue and the child care crisis is one this government can fix now, so we can see more mothers able to work to support their families, more children having access to licensed quality care, as well as increased revenues for the government.”

The Dangers of Riding a Bicycle Around the World
By Cedric Hughes
SEARCH “distance bicycle” on the website for “Officially Amazing Guinness World R e c o r d s ” — http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/ and you will retrieve over 800 results leading to the conclusion that in terms of riding a bike a certain distance in a certain time frame there are simply no more types of categories possible—simply no more heroic challenges. This also means lots of records to challenge, one of which Juan Francisco Guillermo, 47, a Chilean cyclist was well on his way to besting when he was killed on a highway near Korat, Thailand about 140 miles northeast of Bangkok on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Media reports say that “a speeding pickup truck driven by Tiwarat Ratchaipidet, aged 64, scraped [Mr. Guillermo’s] bicycle on the roadside.” Mr.
Guillermo's wife was on another bicycle with their two-year-old son and while she suffered a slight sprain in the accident, Mr. Guillermo was thrown from his bicycle and died at the scene. Published reports say the truck driver, who was unhurt, has been charged with "careless driving resulting in death and injury." Having started in November 2010, Mr. Guillermo was attempting to set a Guinness record by cycling 250,000 km (155,350 miles) over five continents in five years, thus scheduled to end in November 2015. One report detailed his undertaking and the end result by noting that while he “overcame 795 flats, 328 tubes and 120,000 km, … [he] could not overcome a bad driver.” Despite the lofty stature of many a Guinness record, the ‘fun factor’ endures. Record challengers are, after all, motivated self-starters with an eye on their own glorious place in the sun. In photographs, Mr. Guillermo, a Tshirted and helmeted young man with an open face is broadly smiling. Media reports of his death also refer to the crash in 2013 on a Thai highway east of Bangkok that killed a British couple—Peter Root and Mary Thompson,
both 34—engaged in their round-the-world cycling odyssey chronicled on their website, http://www.twoonfourwheels.com/ and in engaging video blogs. Before arriving in Thailand, the British couple had cycled through Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and China. Reports say that Worapong Sangkhawat, the 25-year-old truck driver who hit them was seriously injured and told police he lost control as he reached down to pick up a cap from the vehicle's floor. Although it may seem like another extravagance of the present time, long distance bicycle touring has a long history starting back in the early 19th Century when bicycles at first were ‘hobby-horses’ pushed by the feet rather than pedaled. As bicycle technology advanced, so did the journeys undertaken. In April 1884, for example, Thomas Stevens, a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, equipped, in addition to his bicyclist clothing, with only a money belt, a revolver, two spare shirts and a rain cape, set off around the world riding a 50-inch (wheel diameter) Columbia bicycle. The articles he wrote about his
two year journey became a two-volume 1,021-page book. In those days the reliability of the machine and the rigors of country life were the challenges. Today, even in rural areas, sharing the road with cars and trucks is the riskiest
part of the endeavour.
