Barj Dhahan forced to bow out of Liberal nomination race, supporters lash out at party BY RATTAN MALL FOR the past week sources had been telling me that federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau had been pressuring Vancouver entrepreneur Barj Dhahan to drop out of the Liberal nomination race for Vancouver South riding in favour of Lt. Col. (retd.) Harjit Singh Sajjan, a former Vancouver Police officer. In spite of several phone calls to Dhahan about this over the past few days asking him about this development, he refused to return my calls.

Jagdeep Sanghera, who has been two-term past president of the riding association and who was until now the chair of the election readiness committee, told The VOICE on Thursday morning: “I have stepped aside from the election readiness chair due to decisions made by the election readiness (committee) not allowing an open nomination and have chosen not to be part of the

guaranteeing bad publicity” and alleging that “this was done for the sole purpose of ensuring that only one candidate was green lit for the nomination process.” Some angry supporters of Dhahan told me that they will switch over to the Conservative Party and made all kinds of accusations against various South Asian individuals who they

allege are manipulating things that will result in a loss to Trudeau. DHAHAN finally called me after the radio talk show. I asked him if he was forced to step aside and he responded: “It's my decision. I decided to withdraw in

Panorama Ridge Thunder roar to provincial soccer championship

Panorama Ridge Secondary beat last year's champions Sutherland 3-0 to claim the AAA provincial high school soccer crown. The Thunder's Kerman Pannu put all three goals past their North Vancouver rivals on his way to being named tournament MVP while, at the other end of the pitch, the shutout helped Jassdeep Lallie to the best goalkeeper award. Jassi Mann was named to the commissioner's 16. “The team had to battle through a difficult group, but we felt that those games are what prepared them for an extremely hard fought final,” says Thunder coach Darryl Vanderark. There were strong performances from other Surrey schools in finals at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. Tamanawis, Earl Marriott and Sullivan Heights secondary schools finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, and Queen Elizabeth Secondary came fourteenth. Cabbie back to work after VOICE story: Alleges he was called ‘raghead’, Premier and ministers pressured company to suspend him BY RATTAN MALL THE Black Top cabbie who was suspended last week on Friday was asked by the company to return to work after the VOICE’s online story - “Black Top cabbie alleges passenger he ejected called him ‘raghead’, Premier and ministers pressured company to suspend him” - on Monday. Kewal Singh Toor told The VOICE he finally returned to work on Thursday. THIS was our story on Monday: EVER heard of Premier Christy Clark and 11 ministers firing off emails to the authorities when a horrific murder or rape takes place? Well, these politicians did exactly that to put pressure on the Black Top cab company to fire a driver, says the man who faced their wrath, Kewal Singh Toor – the Black top cabbie who was first defended by his company and then suddenly suspended! Why? Because the woman who complained is from Clark’s Kelwona riding and is believed to have campaigned for her, it is alleged. Why else would Clark and 11 ministers do what they did? A TV station first reported last week that Michelle Gibbons of Kelowna and her six-yearold kid, Brody, who has cerebral palsy and Marfan syndrome, were given a taxi voucher for the airport by

Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. She alleged that less than 30 minutes later, the Black Top cabbie suddenly kicked them out of the vehicle because he said he needed “a paying customer.” Saif Ullah, a Black Top general manager, told Global News that the voucher clearly stated “Yellow Cab” and that only that company gets paid. He said the driver “actually took her back” and defended the cabbie. But then suddenly, the story changed as the cabbie was suspended on Friday and the taxi company apologized to Gibbons. The incident also resulted in the cab companies to agree to accept all vouchers. Sounded like a great story. But was it really so? TOOR phoned me on Monday with his side of the story – and some SHOCKING REVELATIONS – that were RELUCTANTLY CONFIRMED by the president of the cab company. Toor said he ejected the passenger ONLY AFTER he was racially abused by Gibbons when he insisted that she wait for another company’s cab as the voucher would be of no value to him. He pointed out that the government’s own rules state that if somebody abuses a cabbie, they are not allowed in the vehicle. He told The VOICE: “My fault was that when she gave me the wrong voucher I told her to wait for another taxi and she told me that she would miss her flight and insisted

that I should take her to the airport. But when she started abusing me, I refused to do so. Our company sent another vehicle for her and she did not miss her flight.” Toor alleged that she called him a “RAGHEAD” and said: “You stupid [guy]. You go back where you came from.” He said: “When she called me ‘raghead,’ I said ‘get out of my cab’.” Toor said that Gibbons is from Clarks’ Kelowna riding and alleged that she and her family campaigned for the Premier. That is why, he added, when he went to work on Friday, “I was told Christy Clark and 11 ministers emailed to the company,” demanding action against him. Even the PTB (Passenger Transportation Board), whose office opens at 8:30 a.m., reportedly sent an email at 7:30 a.m., asking the cab company what they were doing about the case, said Toor. He added: “With all this pressure, these guys were scared and took action against me.” His wife emailed Clark, defending her husband. She noted that he was such a hard working cabbie. She said he used to work in a mill and after it closed down, he started driving a taxi. She wrote that the Kelowna family had campaigned for her and that’s why she got her husband punished by listening to only one side of the story. His wife pointed out to

Christy that the Kelowna complainant called her husband a RAGHEAD and noted that in the SIKH RELIGION the TURBAN has huge significance. WHEN I phoned Amrik Mahil, President of Black Top Cabs, I had a tough time making him admit that Clark and her ministers flooded him with emails and that he was aware that the cabbie had been called a “raghead.” The conversation, which is taped, went like this: VOICE: “Are you aware that he was abused?” Mahil hesitates and then responds: “That’s the driver’s point of view. ... That’s what the driver is telling you.” VOICE: “He didn’t tell you that?” Mahil: “You’ve got to look at everything.” VOICE: “But did he or did he not tell you that?” Mahil: “Yeah, we have an idea.” VOICE: “Is it true that the Premier’s office and about 11 ministers sent emails on this?” Mahil doesn’t answer the question directly and I cut in: “But you are not answering my question! ... I am asking you did 11 ministers or so sent emails to your company to pressure you to suspend the driver?” Mahil: “No, nobody pressured us to suspend him.” VOICE: “But did they or did they not send you emails?” Mahil: “Yes, but emails might come, but they didn’t pressure us. Nobody pressured

us to do. Actually [we did¸] what`s good for the company. Never mind what Premier tells me.” VOICE: “So it’s good for the company where a driver gets abused and, according to the rules he’s allowed to reject a passenger if he’s abused, and you are saying that you are doing that for the good of the company?” Mahil: “No. No, I didn’t say nothing of that nature. .. You just listened to his point of view.” VOICE: “So that’s why I am asking you for your point of view. You are not answering my questions.” Mahil: “We took his opinion. We took the lady’s opinion. We did everything.” VOICE: “Was he or was he not abused?” Mahil: “Was he abused first or was he abused second? That’s the question you’ve got to ask yourself.” VOICE: “No, but he was nevertheless abused, right?” Mahil: “Yeah, but I am not going to answer any of those questions ... You want to ask any questions, come to my office.” VOICE: “Why was he suspended?” Mahil: “He was suspended because he didn’t do his job properly. It’s as simple as that – nothing more than that.” Mahil kept insisting that I come to his office, and I told him I didn’t need to – he could answer all the questions on the phone. I pointed out to him that I had given him a fair chance to respond.

“This is nothing more than a backdoor appointment” CONTINUED FROM 1 the end for the best interests of our community, for also the best interests of the party.” I asked him if he was going to stick to the party or whether he was having second thoughts about it. Dhahan said: “Well you know we are obviously disappointed. I am disappointed, so are nearly 3,500-4,000 members who with open hearts joined the party. But it is what it is. As for me, for my family, for a lot of our friends, our own values and the things that we believe in and the things that we want in this country in the future are the ones that we believe the Liberal Party best expresses those.” I asked Dhahan if it’s true that he was offered another riding, but he declined the offer. Dhahan said: “There were talks and I was offered another riding, but as we thought about it, for me Vancouver South is home. My wife’s family has been here for six decades, mine for almost five decades, the whole riding is like our own home and I can’t go elsewhere – this is where it was!” He added: “Things happen in life. Things happen in politics. If I have withdrawn this time, it does not mean that in the future I will not seek nominations.” LATER on Thursday, Jagdeep Sanghera fired off the following letter to the “Vancouver South Federal Liberal EDA Executive”: IT is with great sadness that I resign from the position of Election Readiness on the Vancouver South Federal Liberal EDA Executive. I have been an active and loyal Liberal for 30 years but feel compelled to cease holding an official position in a Party that is clearly not following the Leader's call and the public expectations for fair and open nomination

Phone

meetings. In that time I have served in many capacities such as Membership Chair of the Liberal Party of Canada in BC, President of Vancouver/Burnaby South (two terms), Vice President Vancouver South, etc. I have given my time and money over and over again during elections. The EDA was given the gift of two fine, qualified candidates, Barj Dhahan and Harjit Sajjan, to run for nomination and we could have used this to build great publicity but the Green Light committee and Bruce Young have ensured that a decent and ethical man has had his reputation dragged through the mud by accusing him of fraudulently signing up members and thus guaranteeing bad publicity. This was done for the sole purpose of ensuring that only one candidate was green lit for the nomination process. If some of Barj's volunteers signed up members incorrectly and thus had not followed Barj's instructions to them, then the party should just remove these people from the membership list. Or the Party can do a complete membership audit in BC as there are many rumours of other EDAs having increased their membership lists without following all of the rules but only Barj's memberships were audited. This has been a problem within the Party for many years and is ignored for years or they only apply the rules against some candidates and not others. The Party needs to focus on finding ways to stop this from happening instead of just happily keeping the thousands of dollars raised and only auditing when it wants to ensure that one candidate does not have to actually win a nomination meeting to become the candidate. I note that they haven't said that they will refund the over 3,000 members that Barj signed up. This is nothing more than a backdoor appointment. The Leader has the

right in our Liberal Party of Canada's constitution to appoint candidates where he thinks it is necessary and I, for one support that right. If he wanted Harjit to be the candidate without having to fight and win a nomination then he should have appointed him. It would then be on his shoulders as to whether the decision was the correct one. Instead the Party has played games and jerked around Barj so that Harjit was nominated without a contest. This is going to cause political problems not only in Vancouver South but in surrounding EDAs as many of our members and voters will view this as a dishonest process and will not give their support to a Party that talks one way but acts another. If Harjit had beaten Barj in a fair contest this would not be an issue although I suspect that Barj would have won, which is why the Party has decided to go the dishonest route. I thought that after the disastrous election results of 2011 that we had learnt some hard lesson regarding how we govern ourselves but with just a sniff of possible electoral victory we have reverted back to type with dirty politics coming into play. ANYWAY, last March I had warned about this in my RATTAN’S RUMBLE column. This is what I wrote back then about Vancouver South: THAT’S the controversial riding where then-Liberal federal minister Herb Dhaliwal was forced to quit by that petty-minded then-Liberal leader Paul Martin who encouraged his poodles led by Shinder Purewal to take over the riding executive because Dhaliwal had been a loyal Jean Chretien supporter. Martin, after having used Purewal to do his dirty work, dumped him and parachuted NDPturned-Liberal Ujjal Dosanjh into the riding.

Dosanjh narrowly lost to Conservative Wai Young in the last election and with Trudeau’s popularity, the Liberals hope to win back the riding. The Liberals have two fresh faces: well-known Vancouver entrepreneur Barj S. Dhahan and Lt. Col. Harjit Singh Sajjan, the first Sikh in Canada to take command of a British Columbia regiment. According to my sources, Trudeau actually favours Sajjan who received a prominent role at the Liberal convention in Montreal two weeks ago when he introduced the star speaker Lt. General (retired) Andrew Leslie. But as Trudeau has declared that there will be open nominations, all he can do is give hints or put pressure on Dhahan through others. But I am told Dhahan is not one to back down and enjoys the support of the Khalsa Diwan Society’s Ross Street Gurdwara executive. Since both of them are prominent personalities, their nomination battle will be watched keenly. Sajjan joined the British Columbia Regiment as a trooper in 1989 and was commissioned in the regiment in 1991. He was promoted to captain in 1995 and to major in 2005. Established in 1883, the regiment is said to be the oldest military unit in Vancouver, and has received 40 battle honours in its history, according to information on his Facebook. Sajjan will have to quit the military soon to kick off his political campaign. Dhahan has managed to get himself a great deal of publicity recently in both the ethnic and mainstream media by doing stuff like starting the Dhahan International Punjabi Literature Prize with an endowment fund of $2.5 million. The Vancouver Sun has featured articles titled “Vancouver entrepreneur Barj Dhahan has found success in business; satisfaction in spirituality” and “Alumni come to the rescue

The group is also largest Esso dealer and one of the largest Tim Hortons franchisees in B.C., according to a Canada India Foundation profile. Dhahan is also the co-founder and director of Canada-India Education Society (CIES), a registered Canadian charity focusing on health promotion and education in Punjab, India, in partnership with Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust (GN Trust), established by his father Budh Singh Dhahan. Incumbent MP Wai Young and the Conservative Party will have to come with some kind of a strategy to attract as many South Asians as they can. I am sure this will include South Asian MPs Tim Uppal, Bal Gosal and Parm Gill visiting the riding and attacking Trudeau’s liberal stand on marijuana, especially with the community having such a huge problem with gangs and drugs in South Slope! Maybe posters in Punjabi showing the drugs and gangs problems with graphic images and Trudeau smoking a joint could prove terribly effective – with both South Asians and Chinese voters in the riding, eh!

Through a Sikh friend, Dalwinder Aujla, I acquired a number of texts that spoke about the Sikh faith, I felt as though I had found what I been looking for. The mudslinging between Dhalla and Gill didn’t really help the South Asian image. But with Liberal popularity having gone up again thanks to Justin Trudeau and Dhalla having announced in October that she will not be running, it will be interesting to see who emerges as the Liberal candidate. Earlier, IHIT had said that the death of a female at a residence in the 6900-block of 152nd Street in Surrey on Sunday (November 23) appeared to be domestic-related. Staff-Sgt. Jennifer Pound said: “As this investigation is early the motive appears unclear but evidence thus far suggests this to be domesticrelated.”

On Sunday, just after 1 p.m., Surrey RCMP attended the residence for an unresponsive

female. Police found the female was dead and her injuries were consistent with foul play. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called in and assumed the lead on this investigation. While at scene, the victim’s husband was arrested. Jaswant Pandher’s funeral will take place at Delta’s Five Rivers Funeral Home on Sunday, November 30 at 11 a.m. with Bhog at Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran at 152 Street and 68 Avenue in Surrey at 1 p.m.

Premier Christy Clark stands by Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk OOPS, he forgot! A d v a n c e d Education Minister Amrik Virk’s memory loss recovered rapidly when, thanks to a whistleblower at Kwantlen Po l y t e c h n i c University, the NDP released emails that showed Virk did participate in the discussions about a hidden bonus for thenUniversity of Regina Amrik Virk dean of business Photo by Chandra Bodalia Ann Lavack to lure her to become vicepresident academic (VPA) for KPU. Virk, who was an RCMP inspector when he was on the KPU board of governors in April 2011, emailed: "Given the low pay level of a VPA at Kwantlen and the difficulty in drawing candidates within the current pay scale, the research leave is one way to 'top' off the pay level." Virk said he had forgotten about the email. Virk told the media that the emails are from an old RCMP account he doesn’t have access to any longer. But now he would forward the documents to assistant deputy minister Rob Mingay, who had conducted a review earlier. The Opposition wanted Virk out of the cabinet, but he told the media it was up to Premier Christy Clark. Finance Minister Mike de Jong came to Virk’s defence, telling media that Virk had already admitted to his past disclosure inadequacies. He ordered a renewed investigation of the new emails. On Thursday, at the end of the legislative session, Premier Christy Clark made it crystal clear that Virk would stay put. She asserted: “I have absolute confidence in the work that the minister is doing.” Clark added: “The minister made a mistake. He’s admitted that, and he’s apologized for doing that. In the meantime, he has continued to do excellent work on behalf of the people of British Columbia. He continues to enjoy my full confidence in doing that.” Then she lashed back at the NDP reminding them of what she called a “train wreck of ethical lapses under the previous NDP government.”

The business owners have all the controls to manage, edit and upload their information 24 hrs, 365 days. Surrey Directory is a local website made by people of surrey for the people of surrey. We list and advertise businesses located in Surrey only. When asked why they do not have a web presence, a lot of individuals, entrepreneurs and companies shy away from the thought of having their own website due to less experience, more cost and ongoing maintenance to keep their information updated. That was enough reason to create something for the businesses of Surrey to have their presence worldwide with help of an online directory. As it is seen worldwide, due to business modernization, print advertising and paper directories are costly, ineffective and get outdated in a very short time. Everyone is using internet to find information. It is quick and handy as it takes seconds as compared to minutes to find a listing on the internet. Amar Dhesi awarded 2014 Junior World Championships Gold Medal

AFTER a doping case following the 2014 Junior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, freestyle wrestler Geno Petriashvili (120 kg) has been disqualified and Canada’s Amar Dhesi wins the gold medal and the championship title. Dhesi is the first IndoCanadian to win a gold medal at the Junior World

Championships in freestyle wrestling. Dhesi becomes one of a handful of men’s freestylers (senior and other) to bring home the coveted title. Daniel Igali was the last Canadian male to win a Senior World Championship title in men’s freestyle in 1999. Alfred Wurr won the Espoir World Championship

title in men’s freestyle in 1989. “This news results in Canada winning its first male Junior World Wrestling Championship in 25 years,” says Wrestling Canada Lutte Executive Director Tamara Medwidsky. “Wrestling Canada Lutte celebrates this news and congratulates Amar and his coaches for

their hard work and preparation.” The Oregon State University Beavers wrestler had won three straight matches (over Korea’s Kim Seongsu, Turkey’s Yusuf Dede, and USA's Adam Coon, former Cadet World Champion) at the August 2014 event before losing to Petriashvili the defending champion. The 2014 Junior World Wrestling Championship title follows his 2014 Junior Pan Am Championship gold medal performance in Toronto in June. Dhesi has been attending Oregon State University on a full-ride scholarship since September 2013. Dhesi was coached by his father, Balbir Dhesi, an out-

standing former wrestler of India. Amar's brother Parm

was a Youth Olympian for Team Canada.

Gurjit Dhillon who caused death of Pritam Benning in 2009 accident given full parole GURJIT Singh Dhillon was convicted of dangerous driving causing the death of Pritam Benning, 83, in Surrey in September 2009 and sentenced to one year in jail in April 2013 followed by two years of probation. He was also banned from driving for five years. In November 2012, Surrey Provincial Court Judge James Jardine found Dhillon, who had been following a yellow Corvette in his black Corvette, intentionally engaged in risky driving as he sped around a Honda Accord at the green light while trying to change lanes and spun out of control. Benning was severely injured when he was hit by the black Corvette at a bus stop on 72nd Avenue at 128th Street on September 17, 2009, and

Gurjit Singh Dhillon

passed away five days later. The Crown decided to drop the charge of street racing causing death and pursue a conviction for dangerous driving causing death. There was conflicting testimony about the drivers of the two vehicles communicating and what their positions in traffic were. Dhillon’s appeal was dismissed last June. Now Dhillon has been

granted an early release by the Parole Review Panel after serving only four months of his sentence and Benning’s family members are mighty upset about the justice system. Benning’s son Manjit told Global BC TV that the decision hurt because Dhillon admitted to everything at the panel, but in court he didn’t.

Surrey RCMP wraps up inaugural Citizen Police Academy ment of society. Keep it up!” “I was unaware of just how many programs and departments there are and how each of them work. What a great way to see how our community benefits... Thank you for allowing me a behind the scenes look.” Surrey RCMP thanked all those who par-

ticipated in the program. The next Surrey RCMP Citizen Police Academy will be held in the fall of 2015; dates and application information will be available in the summer. For more information on the Citizen Police Academy visit the Surrey RCMP’s website.

Private Mortgage Available !!! ON November 26, Surrey RCMP wrapped up their inaugural Citizen Police Academy with a special ceremony for all participants acknowledging their completion of the program. The 10-week academy provided a group of Surrey citizens and business owners with an inside look into policing through interactive learning sessions delivered by officers and staff. The goal was to foster a better understanding between the public and the RCMP and explore how they can work together to enhance public safety. It is the hope of the Surrey RCMP that participants use what they have learned and go on to become ambassadors for crime prevention in their community. “The program was, without a doubt, a resounding success,” said Cpl. Nicky Noonan, lead organizer of the Citizen Police Academy. “While this was our first attempt at such a program, we were very encouraged by the feedback we received from both participants and presenters.”

Human remains found in Langley those of David Thanh Lam of Edmonton who had criminal record THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced on Thursday that the human remains found in Langley were those of 34year-old Edmonton resident David Thanh Lam, who was known to police and had a criminal record dating back to 1998. His next-of-kin have been notified. “The cause of death will remain holdback evidence and while the motive has not been confirmed, investigators believe it to be linked to criminal activity,” said Staff-Sgt. Jennifer Pound. On November 25, just before 10:30 a.m., the Langley RCMP responded to the 24700-block of 64th Avenue for what was called in as a possible body in that location. Upon attendance police located human remains off the side of the road and evidence in the early stages suggested that the individual was a victim of homicide. The remains being badly burned and an autopsy was held Thursday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT tip line at 1-877551-4448, or, if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Some of the feedback from participants included: “Today, I consider myself a wellinformed citizen of Surrey and [am] very grateful for the opportunity.” “Without a doubt, I can say that you have 25 more members out in our community who will strive for the better-

Vancouver Police issue distraction robbery advisory, gold jewellery targeted

Tired of chasing WiFi?

RECENT incidents in Vancouver have prompted yet another warning about distraction robberies. The first two incidents happened on November 22 between noon and 3 p.m. one near East 47th Avenue and Knight Street, and the other at East Pender and Renfrew Street. A third incident occurred on Wednesday, November 26, shortly before 2 p.m., in the area of East 2nd Avenue and Renfrew Street. On Thursday (November 27), two more distraction robberies were reported to police. One of the robberies took place near Trout Lake and the other was an attempt robbery at East 57th Avenue and

Ross Street. In all five cases, as with those in the past, the targeted victims were openly wearing gold earrings, necklaces, bracelets or rings when they were approached by multiple suspects. The strangers then placed, or attempted to place, fake jewellery around the victim’s head, neck or wrist. Using slight-of-hand techniques, they then removed the victim’s gold jewellery, leaving behind the fake items in its place. Suspect descriptions differ and police believe that there are multiple distraction theft groups travelling from city to city and province to province. Investigators are working with other police agencies in the Lower Mainland and other major cities across Canada in an attempt to identify and arrest individuals responsible for these crimes. The Vancouver Police Department would like to remind the public of the following tips: * if you wear jewellery in public, conceal valuable items under your clothing * don’t allow anyone you don’t know into your personal space * clearly tell the person that you are not interested, and for them to leave you alone * draw attention to the situation * call 9-1-1 and report the crime to police immediately Anyone with information about any of these crimes is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Major Crime Section at (604) 717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.

Paldi: Two Cultures, One Heart

BY KATHRYN MYRA SPENCER (MARSDEN)

Lake Cowichan, Vancouver Island, BC, where I grew up. A mill was built there MY Book “PALDI: Two Cultures, One by Mayo Singh Manhas in the early 20th Heart”, was inspired by a small village century, and as workers immigrated to called Paldi, situated several miles from Canada from India, China and Japan a settlement was established. It is probably Canada’s earliest example of several ethnic groups living and working together harmoniously as one large family. Cultural differences enriched the village, giving it a unique blend of traditions, food and language. It was home to all, but as time passed, the mill closed, and nearly all the families moved away. When I was a young child, however, it was a thriving village of about 1,000 inhabitants. I was often taken to Paldi by my Qualify as a Certified father for a Sunday drive, and I International Trade Professional was mesmerized by the old wooden houses, the general (CITP®). store and the sight of women in colourful Punjabi suits and men wearing turbans. I became close friends with two of the girls, and when I was about 15, I attended the wedding of young Sikh woman who was a friend of my family. It was an enchanting ceremony in the Gurdwara, and later a sumptuous meal served outside, where we sat on the grass under a Ashton College | Vancouver, BC sunny sky.

tual seeker, and have made many trips since. During my career as a clinical counselor I worked in Surrey, BC, where there is a large South Asian population. Many of my colleagues and co-workers had Indian roots, and I came to learn about their culture, their struggles and their warm and closely-knit community. I felt privileged to work among people whom I found to be so welcoming to me, and who often invited me to their celebrations and weddings. Although I was an outsider looking in, I confess that I had a passion for India and things India. One day in 2007, I found out that there was another village named Paldi, in Punjab, India, and that the two were directly linked. Mayo Singh Manhas and a friend Nagina Singh, were the first two inhabitants of Paldi, India, to emigrate to North America. After some years in the USA, Mayo Singh started his mill on Vancouver Island, and the village grew around it. Originally it was simply called “Mayo”, but in 1936 it was changed to “Paldi” in honour of Mayo’s Singh’s home village. When I learned of this connection between the two Paldis, I felt tingles rush up my spine, and suddenly my mind was flooded with ideas. Over the next 1 ½ years these ideas were woven together to create PALDI: Two Cultures, One Heart. A considerable part of the story occurs in Paldi, Punjab, and it was a great challenge to get any information about the village. In early 2007 there was almost nothing on the internet. All that I could find was a two-line entry about a Paldi

in Gujarat; I couldn’t even locate it on a map. I decided to see if any of the Mayo family still lived in the Duncan area, and was delighted to find that Rajindi (son of Mayo Singh) and his wife Joan still lived in their home outside the remains of the village. Joan, Rajindi and their son Robin were immensely helpful and, as Robin and his wife had recently visited Paldi, Punjab, I was able to see a few photos of the village. I tried as best I could to memorize what I saw, and to create from them the setting for the India part of my book. I had sought permission from a Punjabi author to use one of her poems, and we had started up a correspondence. Nirupama invited me to speak at the Chandigarh Press Club in 2010, and again in 2012 to speak at Dikshant International School. This second time she took me on one of the most thrilling

deep, and there were finely crafted arches, domes, balconies and courtyards. My eyes kept being drawn upwards to decorative panels: stylized floral motifs, abstract designs, and some exquisite scenes of Guru Nanak Dev Ji sitting with his disciples. The driver parked the car, and he and Niru joined me in a walk through the streets of this peaceful, timeless place. We walked past wooden doors and shutters painted in glorious blue, an old wagon with wooden spoked wheels, a faded yellow house that was slowly crumbling into the surrounding shrubs, trees and soil. There were also modern buildings in the Punjabi Baroque style, but I was not so interested in them. Around a corner we saw two tiny general stores, one with a couple of boys at the counter, buying sweets. As I was absorbing every detail surrounding me, Niru was asking how to find the home of Mayo Singh. THE gate from the street opened up into a large courtyard with a guava tree in the centre. The home bordered three sides of the courtyard, each very different. On one, a very steep narrow staircase led to an upper level, another was lined with arches on the ground floor, and an enclosed balcony above. A row of wooden doors and shuttered window, each different, but all painted the same vivid blue, was recessed from the outer wall. Nearby was a charpoy, upon which Niru invited me to recline! Up on the roof some boys flew kites, and a little flock of birds chirped from the guava tree; otherwise there was absolute peace. In many ways this seemed like a homecoming to me – so familiar, and yet I’d never seen it before. As we walked back to the entrance, there were several enchanting occurrences, little happenings that seemed to have been staged just for us. High up on a rooftop a massive monkey appeared, leapt onto a brick wall below, swung along it, disappearing over a ledge. She was followed by a tiny frolicking baby. I was fortunate to be able to catch it all with my CONTINUED ON 24

24 CONTINUED FROM 22 camera. Next we heard a bell ring, and a rush of uniformed children burst out from a gate, which we realized was the school. They were followed by their teacher, and we congregated together for a few moments. Prior to this we’d seen almost no one, and suddenly the village came alive.

As we were saying goodbye to the teacher, someone approached us, and introduced an elderly lady to Niru. She was a relative of Mayo Singh, and lived half the year in Paldi, the other half in Vancouver. Every sight, every sound, and every encounter that I had in Paldi seemed to be suffused with love, light and beauty. As

we exited through the memorial gate, I noticed an inscription on the back, which spoke deeply to my heart. It was Mayo Singh’s message to his village and to the world: “Love Mankind.” PALDI: Two Cultures, One Heart is available in print format at Createspace.com and

Surrey Board of Trade wants reinstatement mandatory long-form census THE Surrey Board of Trade wants the federal government to reinstate the mandatory long-form census questionnaire in the 2016 census. In a policy resolution to the federal government, the Surrey Board of Trade indicates that in April 2014, Statistics Canada announced that it is gearing up for the 2016 Canadian Census. As in 2011, there will be a short, mandatory census questionnaire for all Canadians, and a voluntary household survey for 1 in 3 households. In 2010, over the objections of a very broad sector of society, the federal government abol-

ished the mandatory long-form census questionnaire, in favour of a voluntary National Household Survey. The impetus for the change was reported to be over concerns for the privacy of individuals that submit the questionnaire. It has been reported that security of the data, particularly concerning personal privacy, is very high. “However, there are no indications that any census information gathered had been compromised nor individuals’ privacy put at risk,” said Anita Huberman, CEO, Surrey Board of Trade.

Over the past year, Statistics Canada has been releasing information based on the census conducted without this tool. This has resulted in a storm of questions about the reliability of the data collected especially when compared with previous census data. According to a Canadian Press report, the agency (Statistics Canada) viewed the results as good for its first voluntary survey, but noted that the numbers were less reliable when focusing on areas with fewer than 25,000 people. ON THE ROAD ... WITH HARVEY

As the weather worsens, our driving needs to change too BY HARVEY KOONER ICBC Road Safety Coordinator LONG gone are the sunny, dry days of summer. They’ve been replaced with dark and wet fall weather. Has this drastic change affected the way you drive? It should. Here in the Lower Mainland we experience a wide variety of fall and winter weather from rain and fog to snow, ice and sleet. The key to staying safe on our roads at this time of year is to adjust your driving and prepare your vehicle for the road conditions you encounter each time you get behind the wheel. When it’s raining, you need to reduce your speed and increase your following dis-

tance to four seconds because it takes much longer to slow down and stop on wet surfaces. Remember, posted speed limits are for ideal conditions only. You should also make sure your windshield

United Truckers seek enactment of plan, stability at Port THE United Truckers Association of BC (UTA) said on Tuesday that it is encouraged to learn that legislation will be tabled in the BC Legislature, putting into motion a 14-point Joint Action Plan signed by the association and Premier Christy Clark along with federal representatives in March of this year. The plan will bring a number of key initiatives to fulfillment in order to ensure continued stability to the shipping schedule at Port Metro Vancouver. “When we signed the 14-point Joint Action Plan with the Premier in March, we were under the understanding that it would be implemented into legislation within 30 days and a stable system would be reviewed, finalized, and acted upon within 90 days. We have been waiting eight months, so we are anxious to see these promises fulfilled,” said UTA spokesman Manny Dhillon. “Our members are once again losing faith in the system, as the core points agreed upon in the Joint Action Plan have not been put into action despite continued promises.” Non-union truckers walked off the job on February 26. Negotiations with the provincial and federal governments ended their job action on March 26 with the establishment of a 14point Joint Action Plan signed by the representatives of the UTA and both levels of government. Some of the key agreed upon resolutions in the 14-point Joint Action Plan include: * Round trip moves paid in full for both On Dock and Off Dock moves; * Establishment of an hourly rate for company drivers; * A benchmark minimum rate, set across the sector; * Paid wait-time after 90 minutes at the ports; and * A 12% increase in trip rates over 2006 established rates along with a 16% fuel surcharge. “In the current situation, the average port trucker is putting in more than 16 hours a day and barely earning above minimum wage. Our members are having a tough time taking care of their families,” said Dhillon. “Vince Ready and Corin Bell submitted a recommendation report at the end of September, which is very vague and falls short in resolving many trucker related issues.” The recent development in the proposed new Truck Licensing System (TLS Port Permitted Trucks) by Port of Metro Vancouver (PMV) violates every labor right and threatens livelihood of about 300-500 truckers, many of whom have been hauling goods to and from the port for more than 15 years. “The procedures and strategies, to reduce the number of trucks, being opted by PMV are unheard of,” said Dhillon.

wipers are in good condition. In foggy conditions, it’s important to slow down and scan more carefully because visibility is so limited. Turn on your headlights to help you see ahead and be seen by other drivers and road users. Consider using your headlights whenever weather is poor and visibility is reduced and not only at night. If snow or ice hits this winter, staying off the road can sometimes be a less stressful and safer option. Instead of driving, you may want to consider taking public transit if available, carpooling with a friend who's a confident driver, taking a taxi or working from home. If you do venture out in snowy conditions whether close to

home or for a trip out of town, make sure your vehicle is properly equipped for the weather. If you are heading out of town, keep in mind you must use winter tires on certain highways until March 31 – particularly mountain passes in the Southern Interior and northern B.C. When it snows or roads are icy, always check the road conditions on drivebc.ca before your head out, give yourself plenty of time to

get to your destination and accelerate gently to avoid skidding or causing your wheels to spin. The reality is that speed-related crashes significantly increase from October to December in B.C. That’s why throughout November, police and Speed Watch volunteers across B.C. are looking for drivers travelling at unsafe speeds. When you drive too fast in poor conditions, it’s harder to react to the unexpected like on a dark, rainy night when a pedestrian suddenly comes into view or the driver in the vehicle ahead of you slams on the brakes. At this time of year, we all need to do our part to help keep everyone on our roads safe.

CounterAttack roadchecks on now ON Friday, the B.C. government, police and ICBC launched the December CounterAttack campaign to urge drivers to plan ahead for a safe ride home if their holiday festivities involve alcohol. While attitudes toward drinking and driving have changed considerably over the years, an average of 86 lives are still lost every year in B.C. “Even after more than 35 years, CounterAttack remains a cornerstone of our provincial enforcement strategies that, together with changing public attitudes and our tough Immediate Roadside Prohibition program, have helped to reduce the alcohol-related death toll on B.C. roads to record lows,” said Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and Minister of Justice. “CounterAttack remains about preserving and building on these vital public safety gains.” “Getting home safely should be part of everyone’s holiday planning but the reality is that impaired driving remains a leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C.,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Do your part this Christmas season and look out for family and friends – take a stand and don’t let them get behind the wheel impaired.” “Police officers across B.C. will be working hard to keep impaired drivers off our roads this December,” said Chief Neil Dubord, Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. “The hardest part of a police officer’s job is telling a family they’ve lost a loved one – a loss that could have been avoided. We can all help prevent these crashes by always planning a safe ride home.” “We want everyone to enjoy the holidays with their family and friends so make sure you plan ahead for a safe ride home,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s Director of Road Safety. “Take your turn as the designated driver, call a taxi, take transit or use Operation Red Nose.” ICBC’s helping to prevent impaired driving this December through a month-long education campaign, funding for CounterAttack roadchecks and promotion of designated drivers with businesses, sports facilities and community groups. ICBC also supports Operation Red Nose, a volunteer service in 25 B.C. communities that provides safe rides to drivers who have been drinking or feel too tired to drive during the holidays. The Ford F-150 pickup truck gets an aluminum body

By Cedric Hughes

ALUMINUM (or aluminium) is a chemical element—a metal—with the symbol AL and atomic number 13. It is the third most abundant element and the most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust. Of the Earth’s solid surface, 8% by weight is aluminum but its chemical reactivity tends to combine it with over 270 different minerals. The smelting of the ore, bauxite is one of the most common methods of producing ‘primary’ aluminum. Canada is the third largest aluminum producer in the world after Russia and China—second and first—by a wide margin—respectively. Recently, the automobile media focus has been all about aluminum because of the landmark moment that occurred on November 11th at the Ford Rouge Center in Dearborn, Michigan when assembly workers gathered to celebrate the launch of the ‘all-new’ 2015 F-150 truck. Aluminum is the ‘all-new’

feature of this historically successful iconic pickup truck. Now, with a reported 700 pound reduction in weight, Ford claims this ‘all new’ body for the best-selling truck in the USA for the last 37 years will be more durable than steel and as Ford ‘tough’ as it has always been. Although an exact measure of the expected gain in fuel efficiency is still unknown, predictions are for at least a 20% improvement. There are other unknowns. Aaron Bragman, Detroit bureau chief for Cars.com summarizes these as follows: "How the truck is used by customers, how the truck is recycled at the end of its life, how it's repaired, how it's insured, will it cost more to actually have it repaired? ...There's still a lot of questions that we haven't quite gotten the answers to, that we're not going to know until the truck really starts to get in consumers' hands." Making motor vehicles out of aluminum is not a new development. Land Rover started production in 1948 with an aluminum bodied four wheel drive vehicle. Ducker Worldwide, a global business-to-business market research firm summarizes the more recent use of aluminum in light vehicles as follows: “—in parts, doors, and closures—[aluminum usage] in light vehicles has risen from an average of about 45 kilograms a vehicle in 1977 to 159

kg in 2013 … [and will] rise to 179 kg in 2015 or about three billion in total.” Ducker is predicting “an explosive period of growth” and a rise in aluminum usage in light vehicles over the next decade of another 40%. ‘Why now’? The answer is a twofold mix of regulatory mandate and technological innovation. A new US government regulation requires all auto manufacturers to pro-

duce fleets with an average fuel economy of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. There is no doubt: a wholly aluminum body for the best selling pickup truck (and most profitable Ford product) will be more fuel efficient. What has made this possible is innovation in the world of aluminum bonding technology, an aluminum pretreatment process that its inventor, Alcoa, the world's third largest

producer of aluminum says “results in enhanced adhesive bonding durability and overcomes previous challenges with joining aluminum to itself or other materials.” We can expect that the occupant crash protection provided by aluminum bodies will, with innovative engineering, surpass that of steel bodied vehicles. And aluminum does not rust.

Be a Snow Angel: Lend a shovel when it snows

• When it snows, move your car to a side street or garage so City crews can plow main streets more effectively.

When snow and ice hit, we need a team effort. Please help neighbours, friends or relatives who may not be able to shovel their own sidewalks.

• Avoid unnecessary driving in snow and ice. Check transit schedules at translink.ca for commuting alternatives.

Thanks for keeping our streets and sidewalks safer for everyone!

• Prepare your irrigation system for cold weather. Frozen lines can break, causing water run-offs that can freeze on sidewalks and pose a hazard for pedestrians. Remember, all property owners and occupants must clear snow and ice from sidewalks around their property by 10 am, seven days a week.*
