New Delhi (IANS): In one of the "most devastating near-misses in spycraft", intelligence agencies of India, the US and Britain failed to stop the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack despite information from high-tech surveillance and other tools, The New York Times reported Monday. The daily said it had pieced together the story from classified documents, court files and dozens of interviews with current and former Indian, British and American officials. According to the Times, 30-year-old computer expert Zarrar Shah "roamed from outposts in the northern mountains of Pakistan to safe houses near the Arabian Sea in the fall of 2008, plotting mayhem in Mumbai". The lead conspirators were alleged to be Shah, another Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Sajid Mir and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, reported Pro Publica, which conducted the investigation along with the Times. Shah, the technology chief of the Pakistani terrorist group, and fellow conspirators used Google Earth to show terrorists the routes to their targets in the city, it said. Videos, maps and reconnaissance reports had been supplied to Mir by David Coleman Headley, the Pakistani-American who scouted targets. “(Ajmal) Kasab was trained to locate everything in Mumbai before he went,” said Deven Bharti, a Mumbai police official who investigated the attacks, said. "He (Shah) set up an internet phone system to disguise his location by routing his calls through New Jersey," the Times report said. "Shortly before (the) assault (on Mumbai) that would kill 166 people, including six Americans, Shah searched online for a Jewish hostel and two luxury hotels, all sites of the eventual carnage," the Times report said.

But he did not know that by September the British were spying on many of his online activities, tracking his internet searches and messages, according to former American and Indian officials and classified documents from former American security contractor Edward J. Snowden. Shah also drew similar scrutiny from an Indian intelligence agency, according to a former official briefed on the operation, the Times said. "The US was unaware of the two agencies' efforts, American officials say, but had picked up signs of a plot through other electronic and human sources, and warned Indian security officials several times in the months before the attack," it said. The Times said: "What happened next may rank among the most devastating nearmisses in the history of spycraft. "The intelligence agencies of the three nations did not pull together all the strands gathered by their high-tech surveillance and other tools, which might have allowed them to disrupt a terror strike so scarring that it is often called India’s 9/11." The reason: No one fully grasped the developing Mumbai conspiracy. “They either weren’t looking or didn’t understand what it all meant,” said one former American official who had access to the intelligence and would speak only on the condition of anonymity. “There was a lot more noise than signal. There usually is.” The daily quoted India's former national security advisor Shivshankar Menon as saying: “No one put together the whole picture. Not the Americans, not the Brits, not the Indians.” Menon added that only after the shooting started in Mumbai in November 2008 that everyone shared what they had, largely in meetings between British and Indian officials, and then “the picture instantly came into focus”.

Britain's oldest man, a Sikh, celebrates Christmas London (IANS): An Indian-origin 110-year-old Sikh man in Britain is fond of Christmas and he is already celebrating on the eve of the festival. Nazer Singh, born in Punjab, India, had not heard of Christmas until he moved to England in 1965. Now he is a huge fan, the Daily Express reported Friday. "Since I came to England I take pride in receiving gifts and giving presents. I'm running out of items to ask for, though," Singh was quoted as saying. Singh, an ex-labourer, who lives with son Chain, 61, in Sunderland in North East England, said he would spend the day with family, but would not be seeing all his nine children. "We always get him warm clothes. Oh, and whiskey. We can’t forget that," Chain said. Only two other men in the world are older than Nazar -- Sakari Momoi and Yasutaro Koide, who are Japanese, and aged 111.

Nazar Singh, from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, has lived through two world wars, the Titanic disaster, the Great Depression, the first moon landing and the invention of colour television

Janata Parivar targets Modi government on black money, conversions New Delhi (IANS): Leaders of the Janata Parivar raised the issue of black money both inside and outside parliament Monday, hitting out at the NDA government for failing to fulfil its promise of bringing back illegal cash stashed abroad. They also accused it of fomenting communal tensions. Political heavyweights from the Janata Parivar, comprising the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and the Janata DalSecular (JD-S) gathered in the Jantar Mantar area in the heart of the capital to address a rally denouncing the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. "Why has the NDA government failed to fulfil its promises made before the (Lok Sabha) election?" asked JD-U leader Nitish Kumar. "Where is the black money it promised to bring back

(from abroad)?" "The prime minister has campaigned across the nation. He had said that he would bring back black money; what happened to the promises he made? They are spending money on religious conversions, they made false promises during poll campaign, and now they are diverting people's attention," said the former Bihar chief minister. He accused Modi of not acting tough against right-wing Hindu groups charged with religious conversion of Christians and Muslims and said the country should not be divided on religious grounds. Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad were equally critical. Mulayam Singh said: "They promised jobs to all the youth and Rs.15 lakh to everyone (from the black money they would bring back). They even

asked people to open bank accounts. But where is the money?" "The BJP's conspiracy is to engineer riots so that attention is shifted away from the government's failures," said the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister. "The Agra incident was just a beginning. They will do such things across the country," Mulayam Singh said, referring to the conversion of 300 Muslims families in his state. Lalu Prasad alleged that Modi was attempting to cause religious divide in the country by tacitly encouraging religious conversions. "The minorities have also fought for India's independence and the Modi government engages in 'ghar vapsi' (home-coming)," he said. JD-U chief Sharad Yadav said: "Janata Parivar is protesting at the venue (Jantar Mantar) against the government over black money. You promised good days, employ-

ment". The issue was raised again in both houses by members of these parties. In the Lok Sabha, they also staged a walkout over the issue. Members of the Samajwadi Party and the Trinamool Congress also held protests in the parliament premises. In the lower house,

The LCA (Navy) Prototype 1 - or NP1 - the first indigenously designed and developed fourth-plus generation combat aircraft, was tested at the Ski-Jump facility of the Shore Based Test Facility at INS Hansa in Goa Saturday.

Manmohan Singh: Busy as always, but not writing memoirs yet New Delhi (IANS): He has just completed 200 days out of office, but former prime minister Manmohan Singh keeps himself perhaps as busy when in power, attending parliament for half a day daily, meeting people and attending party meetings. And he hasn't yet decided on writing his memoirs as yet. No, he also isn't troubled by a court direction that he be quizzed on the coal blocks issue as he had anyway offered to be questioned by the CBI, say aides. Manmohan Singh, India's 13th prime minister, was known to be a workaholic, keeping a punishing schedule despite his age and his heart condition. And he continues to

keeps himself as busy now after a decade at the head of a Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. And he has refused to give interviews, an aide said. "He sticks to his daily schedule; only now he starts a little later everyday and retires a little early," the aide told IANS, declining to be named. A member of the Rajya Sabha, Manmohan Singh rarely misses a day in parliament. He has made it a point to attend half a day's session every day during the ongoing winter session, that has been marked by daily opposition rancour against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government and demands for Prime

Minister Narendra Modi to come to the Rajya Sabha and make a statement on the controversy over conversions and other issues. "He goes for half a day every day. He does not participate in the 'hungama' ('ruckus)," the aide said. Manmohan Singh, 82, stepped down in May when the Modi government took over after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the Lok Sabha polls. Manmohan Singh is also not fazed by a trial court directing the Central Bureau of Investigation to examine him in a coal block allocation scandal during his tenure that is being probed for alleged corruption. The aide was dismissive about the court direc-

tion, saying there was "nothing new in it" and Manmohan Singh had always offered himself for questioning in the matter. The former prime minister held the coal portfolio for some time in UPA-I. The aide also denied reports that Manmohan Singh is writing his memoirs. "He is not writing any book now. He has not made up his mind," the aide added. Manmohan Singh, known for his understated manners and quiet gravitas, has always kept away from flamboyance and is camera shy. India's first Sikh prime minister, Manmohan Singh's light blue turban is synonymous with his image. As prime minister, he sported a simple churidar-kurta in summer and bandhgala dark suits in winter, but the blue turban was a constant, as it is even today. The former prime minister, who underwent a coronary bypass in 2009, is careful about his diet and health. He keeps to his daily routine of walks and exercises to keep fit and meets people who call on him. As a member of the Congress Working Committee, the party's highest decision-making body, Manmohan Singh attends all meetings. Though he keeps away

from publicity events, he recently appeared on a Aap ki Adalat show on India TV and spoke with a degree of clarity and passion on several issues, including the telecom and coal scandals. On the much-talked about two heads of the UPA government, where Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was reportedly said to be taking major decisions, bypassing Manmohan Singh, the aide said that Gandhi had publicly denied there were two centres of power and both were "working together". Sonia Gandhi still calls on Manmohan Singh to seek advice, something which Sanjaya Baru, the former prime minister's media advisor, also mentioned in his book. "Madam came last week, she comes for advice," said the aide. Manmohan Singh, who is widely respected as an ace economist and the

brain behind the economic liberalization that began in India in 1991, said earlier this month that India can achieve a growth rate of 8-9 percent provided there is a "national consensus" on methods to take advantage of a globalised world. For most of a decade, Manmohan Singh had presided over 8.5 percent GDP growth though it almost halved in the last few years, which the then government blamed on the global economic slowdown, high oil prices and the US Federal Reserve withdrawing its stimulus. In November, Manmohan Singh was conferred with one of Japan's highest civilian honours - 'The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers' for his contribution towards building Japan-India relations. The former prime minister, while he preferred to keep a low profile in India, was an energetic persona on his trips abroad and took a keen interest in foreign policy. At his last press conference on Jan 3, Manmohan Singh had asserted that he had not been a weak prime minister and that history would be kinder to him than contemporary media.

Make in India to be highlighted at PBD, 3,000 diaspora to attend New Delhi (IANS): The Modi government's key programmes, including Make in India, would be highlighted during the Jan 7-9 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) being held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, that is expected to see around 3,000 Indian diaspora attending. The annual PBD is being held in Gandhinagar to mark the centenary of the return of the "sarva sreshtha pravasi Bharatiya" or foremost Indian diaspora member, Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa, said External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who is also minister for Overseas Indian Affairs. An exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi and his contribution to India's independence would also be inaugurated besides other events to mark the centenary of Gandhi's

return to India. Foreign Minister of South Africa Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has also been invited, but her confirmation is awaited, said Sushma Swaraj. The chief guest of the 13th PBD would be Guyana President Donald Ramotar. PBD is the world's largest annual gathering of people of Indian origin aimed at enhancing networking and reinforcing commercial linkages. There are 25 million people of Indian origin residing outside India. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas would be "different" from earlier PBDs, stressed Sushma Swaraj. The PBD would be hosting some special events, including a special session for the diaspora youth and also four special sessions. These are - to deal with the concerns of dias-

pora living in the Gulf countries, for those living in Francophone countries, a session for countries where the descendants of Indian indentured labour live and another session to address concerns of the associations of Indian diaspora, she said. Gujarat is the partner country for the event. Ten Indian states, including the non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) states of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Nagaland, are participating. The BJP states are Gujarat, Goa, AMadhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Maharashtra. Asked if West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is at loggerheads with the BJP, was invited, Sushma Swaraj said that she had sent letters of invitation to all chief ministers, and so far

10 had confirmed they would be attending. Finance Minister Arun Jaitey and Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman would be addressing the session between the 10 chief ministers and NRI businesspersons, she said. The officials looking after the Make in India, Swachch Bharat, Skill India, Clean Ganga projects and Tourism would tell the diaspora about the schemes and invite investments from the diaspora. Sushma Swaraj also denied that the decision to host the event in Gujarat this time was taken after the new government came into power. She said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had four years ago, while he was chief minister of Gujarat, proposed hosting PBD in Gujarat in 2015 and

had written about it to the then prime minister Manmohan Singh. To another question, she said that the ministry is working to merge the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards with the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cards and ensure lifelong visa to the holders. On a proposal to grant voting rights to NRIs, Sushma Swaraj said that they are examining several suggestions, including having Electronic Voting Machines placed in embassies during elections, allowing proxy voting or having the diaspora member to come home to vote. "There is no decision yet, we are thinking of a solution," she said. To criticism that the PBD events end up becoming places for the businesspersons to interact,

she said that this time they have "tried to balance the aam admi and the businessperson" and cited the special events being held for the diaspora to address their concerns. The Indian ambassadors of six Gulf countries have been invited to address the special session on diaspora living in those countries. The event would kick off Jan 7 with a Youth PBD where the children of Indian diaspora would participate and be given an insight into the culture and heritage of India as well as its achievements, including in space and IT. On Jan 8, Prime Minster Modi would Ainaugurate the main session and Jan 9, President Pranab Mukherjee would give away the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammans to 15 eminent diaspora members.

Tripura supplies power to Meghalaya, Mizoram for Christmas Agartala / Aizawl (IANS): In a reciprocal gesture, Tripura is supplying power to Meghalaya and Mizoram to ensure that the people in the two Christian-dominated states celebrate Christmas without any disruption, a minister said here Monday. "We have started supplying 15 MW of power to Mizoram and 20 MW to

Meghalaya from Sunday and it would continue till Jan 2," Tripura Power Minister Manik Dey told IANS in Agartala. A Mizoram state electricity department official said in Aizawl that with the additional power supply from Tripura, Mizoram would have sufficient power during its most important annual carnival.

Mizoram and Meghalaya supplied 15 MW and 20 MW electricity respectively to Tripura during the Durga Puja festival. As a mutual gesture, Tripura is now supplying power to both the Christian-dominated states for Christmas. Christmas is the major festival in three Christiandominated northeastern states of Nagaland,

Indians awaiting execution freed after blood money payment Riyadh (IANS): Three Indians in Saudi Arabia convicted for a compatriot's murder have been saved from execution after an Indian businessman paid nearly half a million Saudi riyals (nearly $133,200) in blood money on their behalf, media reported

Saturday. Fasal Iritti, 35, Mustafa Kunnath, 33, and M. Shakeer, 36, from the south Indian state of Kerala were released from Al-Hair prison in Riyadh where they had been awaiting execution for the murder of Ashraf, a native of

Mangalore in Karnataka, the Arab News reported. They were convicted in the case in May 2008. Shihab Kottukad, Riyadh coordinator of the NonResident Keralites' Affairs Department, told Arab News: "All three men were released Wednesday and

left for home where they reached today." The three had attacked Ashraf following a scuffle. They subsequently tried to hide the body in a nearby dumpster when they were caught red-handed by police. After their murder conviction and sentencing,

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was approached by their families to save their lives. They also sought the assistance of the Indian embassy in the Gulf nation to contact the victim's family in Riyadh. The victim's family agreed to pardon them in lieu of blood money.

Kottukad said the victim's father, Abdul Qadeer, initially asked for two million Saudi riyals in blood money but eventually agreed to settle for 490,000 Saudi riyals. The report, however, did not mention when the murder took place.

Indian American college student builds a multimillion dollar company out of family’s garage HOUSTON: For the past four years, Wrist-band.com has provided customized silicone wristbands and bracelets to customers all around the globe. Azim Makanojiya, Founder and CEO of Wristband.com, grew his business into one of the largest online seller of silicone wristbands in North America. It was at a trade show in China where the silicone bracelets caught the attention of the University of Houston Alum. “I was amazed by how much one could customize the product,” Makanojiya said. “There was not a single site in the U.S. where individuals could tailor bands online. So I created a site that gave the customer the freedom to decorate a band anyway they liked.” The concept was simple. Take the popular Livestrong wristbands idea, make them customizable and deliver them to the hands of consumers. Makanojiya soon learned that there were many complex elements to this seemingly elementary niche

market. From molding and tooling to identifying product demand through AdWords, Makanojiya thoroughly researched every anticipated aspect of the business. With humble beginnings, Makanojiya started Wristband.com out of a small garage in Houston, Texas, with a limited budget. Still a student, Makanojiya was challenged with running a separate business and managing a new venture. “At that time, it was just a startup. I still had to maintain my original business, which was a pretty good chunk of my family income,” Makanojiya explained. “My family was not financially well and they relied on my income. That was the dilemma. Should I focus more on the startup or on what I was currently doing?” Before a platform was developed Makanojiya and his two-man team were taking orders over the phone, jotting them down on an order sheet that they created and submitting orders every night. In a short time, the small idea

evolved into one of the fastest growing promotional product manufacturers in the industry. At the end of 2010, they pulled in around $6.9 million dollars. “The only reason that this could happen at a very fast pace, from my point of view, was because we had the drive,” Makanojiya said. In 2011, they were inducted into the prestigious elite inc 500 companies, coming in at number 31. Fast forward to 2014 and Wrist-band.com continues to be one of Houston’s fastest growing technology companies. “The interesting part of our company is that we are not a manufacturing company. We tell everyone that we make wristbands but the beauty of our company is we are a technology company. We don’t have a single equipment that touches the product. I might have been a Punjabi kudi in previous life: Danish singer Hoshiarpur (Punjab) (IANS): She is from Denmark and lives in the US, but it does not take much of an effort to get Anita Lerche to sing - 'bhajans' in Hindi, 'shabads' (hymns) in Punjabi, even popular Bollywood numbers and other international compositions - back-to-back - anytime, anywhere. She says she might have been a "Punjabi kudi" (girl) in her previous life. At ease performing in small towns and religious events in Punjab and elsewhere in India or recording in top studios in the US, she quipped "I might have been a Punjabi kudi in a different life." Anita, who has released two albums of Punjabi songs -

town, Herlev, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Anita had come to India in 2005 with a group of Danish friends. While the group returned, she stayed back and was helped in her pursuit of Punjabi music by the Hoshiarpur-based family of businessman Anurag Sood. "It was during a nine-hour journey from Kullu (in Himachal Pradesh) that I first heard Punjabi music and songs. I realised that this was the music that I was looking for. It touched my heart," Anita, who has sung in 16 different languages, told IANS here in an interview. When she sang her first Punjabi song, she had already

"Heer from Denmark" and "Sadke Punjab Ton" - said her first encounter with Punjabi music and songs in 2005 brought out her inner voice of "this is where I belong". Born and raised in a small

Badal rules out Majithia's resignation Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Monday said there was no question of Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majitha resigning over his alleged involvement in a drug racket. "I have never demanded resignation from anybody," Badal said when journalists wanted to know if Majitha would be asked to step down till the investigation into the charges against him got over. Badal's comments came a day after his Akali Dal's ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party, joined forces with the Congress and the

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to demand that Majitha quit as minister. The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Majithia to appear before it in Jalandhar Dec 26 in connection with the case. Majithia did not attend the assembly session Tuesday. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was also absent. Chief Minister Badal met the media after attending a meeting of the ruling Akali-BJP alliance following the first sitting of the three-day winter session of the assembly. He asserted that the Shiromani Akali Dal would

reply during the winter session to all the issues raised by the opposition. When it was pointed out that senior Akali Dal leader Sarwan Singh Phillaur had resigned in May after his son was named in a drug racket, Badal said: "Phillaur resigned on his own. I never asked him to resign." Akali Dal general secretary Daljeet Singh Cheema added: “You cannot punish anybody merely on the basis of summons. There is no need for Majithia to resign. If something concrete comes up, then we will see.”

sung in 13 languages from different parts of the world. "Before that, I did not even know about the word Punjabi. I had sung in 13 languages till then, but I never felt the same love that I felt for Punjabi music and songs," she said. Anita says she will always remain indebted to her guru in India, Rattan Singh Rajput (who passed away last year), for teaching her the pronunciation and meaning of Punjabi words. "I did not want to sing Punjabi songs without knowing their meaning, pronunciation and feeling them. He (Rajput) was a very good teacher who helped me learn a lot," she said.

"Punjab has become my second home (after Denmark). In the last nine-and-a-half years, I have lived in Punjab for almost five-six months every year," said Anita. When she performs in Punjab and sings hymns, Anita makes it a point to cover her head with a 'chunni' (scarf). Being a foreigner, she becomes the star attraction at religious events where she sings bhajans. "I have been dressed in a red saree and put on a rath (chariot) at Ram Naumi shobha yatra processions," she said. Be it "Saara jag teri santan, sabko sanmati de bhahgwan", "Tumhi ho mata pita tumhi ho" or the difficult "Heer" (by

Waris Shah), Anita is at ease singing anything. Based in Indianapolis with her husband Soren Hjorth, Anita recently gave a live performance on her latest peppy number "India " (which talks about the greatness of India), with dancers from the US gracefully performing a fusion of ballet and Indian dance forms. Anita, who had a Punjabi-style wedding with her husband here last month, rendered another latest number, "Chandani" in her Indian wedding dress with her husband recording the video. Posted on social networking sites, the video has recorded nearly 900,000 hits.

Mind games important to rattle opposition, says Johnson Melbourne (IANS): Pacer Mitchell Johnson, who was the catalyst for Australia's second Test win over India at the Gabba last week, Monday asserted that it is important to intimidate the opposition with mind games. In a new DVD titled 'Mitchell Johnson: Bouncing Back', he elaborated on many of the

recent important cricketing issues, including beating England last season to win the Ashes. Johnson, who has taken 278 wickets in 63 Test matches, emphasised that intimidating England, especially the tailenders was a part of their team plan and was critical in their series victory over the English. "Sometimes we say

stupid things when we're out there. Sometimes we try and say things that hopefully get into the batsmen's heads a little bit. We try to get them to think about their feet, or just let them know you are going to bowl another short ball. It's all mind games," Johnson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.com. Johnson also believes

Rio puts Olympic plans on track Rio de Janeiro (IANS): International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice president John Coates triggered a controversy in April when he described preparations for the Rio 2016 Games as the "worst" he had seen. If his comments were designed to jolt local organisers into action, the plan seems to have worked, reports Xinhua. A host of competition sites are beginning to take shape ahead of next year's official test events. Among them is the Barra Olympic Park, which will boast seven new venues in addition to the existing Rio Olympic Arena and Maria Lenk Aquatics Center. The Carioca 1, 2 and 3 arenas are in the final stage of mounting pre-moulded concrete structures and roof installations. The venues will host basketball, judo, GrecoRoman wrestling, freestyle wrestling, fencing, taekwondo, wheelchair rugby and boc-

cia Meanwhile, grandstand structures at the Olympic Tennis Centre's 10,000-seat centre court are almost finished. Construction is also underway at the 5,000-seat Court 1 and 3,000-seat Court 2. The venue will host tennis and five-a-side football. The city's mayor Eduardo Paes has admitted that work on the Olympic Velodrome is three weeks behind schedule. But he insists it will be ready on time. Pre-moulded concrete structures are currently being installed while foundation works are in their final stages. Swifter progress has been made at the Future Arena, which will host handball and goalball. Core pillars are already in place while the installation of roof beams and latticework has also been completed. The 18,000-seat aquatics stadium is currently being fitted with a concrete floor and metal support structures for

tribunes. It will host swimming and water polo competitions. Major strides have been made towards the development of the Olympic golf course in the second half of 2014. With a legal dispute seemingly resolved, work on the project has gained momentum. A topography study of the course has been concluded, as has the dredging of the lakes. Grass was planted in May and the clubhouse foundations are now being built. In July, work began on the Deodoro Olympic Park, which will host 11 Olympic and four Paralympic events. About 60 percent of the venues are ready due to existing structures built for the 2007 Pan American Games. Foundation work is underway at the Youth Arena, which will host women's basketball and the modern pentathlon fencing section. It will comprise 2,000 permanent and 3,000 temporary seats.

his team tries to be within the rules but on television it sometimes looks worse than what the situation is. "Sometimes it might look a little different on TV. It might look as if we're going a bit too hard at each other, and some-

times it could be a bit over the top. But we're always trying to stay inside the guidelines," the left-armer added. "If you can get into someone's mind by speaking to a batsman and tell them that their feet aren't going any-

But, if you also constantly feel exhausted, experience headaches for no obvious reason or have high blood pressure, you could have a more serious problem. That’s because these can all be the result of snoring—which is, in turn, the most common symptom of a potentially serious health problem—obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. There are nine zones in the puzzle. While most people think of snoring as a minor annoyance, research shows it can be hazardous to your health. That’s because for over 18 million Americans it’s related to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). People who suffer from OSA repeatedly and unknowingly stop breathing during the night due to a complete or partial obstruction of their airway. It occurs when the jaw, throat, and

tongue muscles relax, blocking the airway used to breathe. The resulting lack of oxygen can last for a minute or longer, and occur hundreds of times each night. Thankfully, most people wake when a complete or partial obstruction occurs, but it can leave you feeling completely exhausted. OSA has also been linked to a host of health problems including: -Acid reflux -Frequent nighttime urination -Memory loss

OSA can be expensive to diagnosis and treat, and is not always covered by insurance. A sleep clinic will require an overnight visit (up to $5,000). Doctors then analyze the data and prescribe one of several treatments. These may require you to wear uncomfortable CPAP devices that force air through your nose and mouth while you sleep to keep your airways open, and may even include painful surgery.

The chin strap, which is now available from a company called My Snoring Solution, works by supporting the lower jaw and tongue, preventing obstruction of the airway. It’s made from a high-tech, lightweight, and super-comfortable material. Thousands of people have used the MySnoringSolution chinstrap to help relieve their snoring symptoms, and they report better sleeping, and better health overall because of it.

Tendulkar named ICC World Cup 2015 Ambassador

Dubai (IANS): The International Cricket Council (ICC) Monday named Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Ambassador. It will be the second successive time that the Indian maestro will be the Ambassador of ICC’s pinnacle tournament, after he fulfilled the role in the previous event, which was co-hosted by Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka in 2011. In his role as ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Ambassador, Tendulkar will promote and support a variety of ICC initiatives to enhance the profile of the tournament, which is the third biggest sporting event in the world and will take place in Australia and New Zealand from Feb 14 to March 29. Tendulkar retired from international cricket last year after representing his country in 200 Tests, 463 One-Day Internationals (ODI) and one Twenty20 International. In a career spanning 24 years, the 41-year-old scored a total of 34,357 international runs and 100 cen-

turies. Tendulkar added the missing World Cup title to his long list of achievements in his sixth attempt in 2011. He is the all-time leading run-getter in World Cup history with 2,278 runs in 45 matches at an average of 56.95. For his 673 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003, he was awarded player of the tournament as India finished runner-up to Australia. Commenting on his appointment, Tendulkar said: "I am delighted and honoured to be appointed ICC Cricket World Cup Ambassador for the second successive time." "After playing in the last six editions, the upcoming World Cup will be a different experience as I will follow it from the sidelines. It could probably be comparable to the ICC Cricket World Cup 1987 where I was a ball boy, enthusiastically cheering every ball." "The image of the champion team lifting the World Cup inspires many youngsters

around the world and gives them a dream to chase - a dream which I fulfilled after 22 years of relentless pursuit by being part of the victorious Indian team in 2011," he said. ICC chief executive David Richardson said: "The ICC is delighted to once again have Sachin as an Ambassador for its biggest and most prestigious tournament. Sachin is not only an inspiration to cricketers but to all sportspeople for his endurance, perseverance, talent, personality and commitment to the game." The 11th edition of the World Cup kicks off in Christchurch Feb 14 when co-host New Zealand take on former champion Sri Lanka. On the same day at the picturesque

Veteran golfer Atwal clinches Dubai Open title Dubai (IANS): Veteran Indian golfer Arjun Atwal Sunday ended a frustrating four-year title drought by winning the inaugural Dubai Open by one stroke after South Korean teenager Wang Jeung-hun bogeyed the final hole at the par-72 Els Club Dubai here. Atwal, a former Asian Tour number one, trailed by one heading into the par-five 18th hole but emerged victorious with a closing birdie while a nervous 19-year-old Wang posted a six following a wayward second shot which ended in a bush. The 41-year-old Indian, one of four overnight leaders at the final tournament of the 2014 Asian Tour season, ended the day of high drama by signing off with a sixunder-par 66 and a winning total of 16under-par 2727 while Wang carded for a 67. Scotsman Simon Yates took third place following a 68. Other Indians in the fray, overnight leader Shiv Kapur and Gaganjeet Bhullar had a tough day and shared the 11th place with two others. While Shiv carded a par score to take his total to 10-under 278, Bhullar managed one-under 71. Jeev Milkha Singh finished joint 31st with a four-under 68 which took his total to six-under 282. However, the day belonged to Atwal. After opening his week with a 73, Atwal said his putting clicked that he needed only 27, 24 and 25 putts over the last three rounds after taking 34 strokes on day one. “This one feels really special,” beamed Atwal, whose last victory came at the 2010 Wyndham Championship on the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour. “I think the last time I won on the Asian Tour was 2008 (Maybank Malaysian Open). I've gone through some really tough times the last few years with injuries and losing my card on the PGA Tour and all that stuff. It was at a point where I almost wanted to quit. Thanks to a few of my family and friends, I didn't, and here we are.” Atwal paid tribute to Wang, who looked so much in control of the final round before dropping those late bogeys to hand the Indian his eighth Asian Tour title and the top cheque of $90,000. Wang, who has not missed a single cut this season, produced a flawless 31 on the first nine and led by three shots at one stage before his late blemishes. He opened the door for Atwal with a second bogey of the day on 17th when he threeputted before missing a 10-foot par attempt on the last hole.

2015 Chevrolet Impala Sedan: Comfortable, good looking and good By Autoreviewman For 2015 the all-new, tenth generation 2014 Chevrolet Impala returns with a fresh contemporary design and some newly minted mojo. For openers a dramatic, long lean body exterior is now offered with some real all-American flair. The recessed side character line adds some tension and speed to the profile and a radical c-pillar puts some flourish along with some nice chrome trim on the exterior. The Impala arrives with a base 2.4L 4-cylinder engine producing 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque or a bigger; more powerful 3.6L V6

with 305 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Also new is an attractive, contemporary interior with a cool dual cockpit theme and the use of higher quality materials. The centre stack is attractively done and easy on the eye. There is a richer look and more substantial padding on the doors, armrest and dash. The cabin feels more generous and well- upholstered. The front seats are superbly comfortable and feature plenty of legroom. Likewise front headroom and shoulder room as in most domestic cars, is more than ample The dash is also bright and well

laid out with clear, legible instruments and the addition of an 8 touchscreen relaying and operating the Impalas climate, navigation and entertainment systems. There is also a smaller information screen between the gauges that is handy for relaying info at a quick glance. Push a button and the centre display rises to reveal a lockable secret storage cubby for valuables. The 2015 Chevrolet offers a slew of technology, including the newest generation MyLink infotainment system. Voice activation is used for navigation programming, dialing phone numbers and for the audio songs.

Safety is also well catered for with a range of systems: An optional adaptive cruise control uses radar technology to calculate traffic ahead then adjusts the Impala's speed accordingly or brings the vehicle to a safe full stop, if necessary. Collision Mitigation Braking is also present, and uses an audio warning and, if necessary, applies the brakes to avoid a collision. The Impala is also admirably quite on the road with such measures as laminated glass and acoustic foam between body panels to insulate road noise and vibration. The 2.4 liter four cylinder engine is good for its performance

and the 182 horsepower is perfectly adequate, however the bigger V6 engine turns the Impala into a much faster accelerating and more powerful sedan and gives it some more spark should you need it. This engine is rated at 11.1L/100km city and 6.9L highway. With a starting Canadian price of $39,845 and a high specification the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is a very good deal and compares well with the competition. By Autoreviewman 2015 Chevrolet Impala Sedan base price$39,845. Price as tested with options and destination charge $46,300.

Bindra retains 10m air rifle national title Pune (IANS): India's only individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra showed that despite being only a hobby shooter now, he has it in him to continue winning as he successfully defended his 10 metre air rifle title at the 58th National Shooting Championships here Monday. The 32-year-old Punjab marksman shot a total of 208 to retain the crown at the Balewadi Shooting Range.

Army marksman Satyendra Singh finished second with a total of 207.2 while Haryana's Sanjeev Rajput settled for the third place with 185. Ironically, Rajput had taken the pole position in the qualifications, shooting a total of 624 while Abhinav trailed the Haryana marksman by three points. Bindra had announced just before the 2014 Asian Games -where he won a bronze medal

-- that henceforth he would only train twice a week and take part in fewer competitions. In the team event, the Army Marksmanship Unit of

Satyendra Singh, Chain Singh and Chavanke Ashok won the gold, shooting a total of 1857.5 points. Washington (IANS/EFE): American swimming legend Michael Phelps received a oneyear suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to drink-driving, media reported. The 29-year-old athlete, winner of a record 18 Olympic gold medals, was arrested on Sep 30 in Maryland while speeding and driving with a blood-alcohol level that was nearly double the legal limit. USA Swimming, the national governing body for swimming sports in the country, subsequently suspended Phelps for six months and he will not be allowed to participate in next year's world aquatics championships in Kazan, Russia. As part of the sentence, the Baltimore City District Court judge ordered Phelps, who pleaded guilty Friday to driving under the alcohol influence, to refrain from drinking alcohol during his probation. In 2004, Phelps pleaded guilty to the charge of driving while he received 18 months of probation, while in 2009 USA Swimming suspended the athlete for three months after a photo surfaced showing him smoking marijuana at a party. Phelps retired from competition after the 2012 London Olympics, but in April he announced that he was resuming training with an eye on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

'PK' crosses Rs.500 million in two days AAMIR Khan-starrer “PK” has minted over Rs.50 crore [1 crore = 10 million] in two days in the domestic market, and trade experts expect it do "steady” business in coming days. On the first day, it earned about Rs.26 crore. The next day, it managed to mint Rs.29 crore. They will earn profit, but expecta-

AAMIR Khan, whose "PK" has opened to rave reviews and roaring box office success, says he chooses a film on the basis of the script and not box office prospects. "PK", which came out Friday, has managed to gross Rs.95.21 crore [1 crore = 10 million] in three days. When asked if it is true that he chooses films on the basis of box office prospects, Aamir said: "It's a very unfortunate trend because the moment creative people start thinking about numbers, then the shadow of the numbers influences the kind of film they choose and pick." If the team of Aamir, director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra created history with "3 Idiots" in 2009, the trio have repeated the same success with "PK", a film that boasts of a unique concept. It uses an alien to talk about the ills of society and not only makes viewers laugh and cry but also makes them

think. "The moment I start choosing films that can do Rs.100 crore business, then my choice becomes very limited and I can only do films like 'Avengers' or 'Spider-Man', which go on to achieve those numbers. This really kills creativity to an alarming extent, so I have always selected my films based on what I feel towards them," he said. "Like 'Taare Zameen Par' went on to do good business and I didn't know it would. I just did it because I liked the script. Also, I selected 'Rang De

Check your weight once a week to lose fat London, Dec 18 (IANS) It may seem a bit bizarre but researchers have found that how often you step on the scale to measure weight is linked to weight loss - the more is the frequency, the faster you slim down. The more frequently dieters weighed themselves the more weight they lost, and if participants went more than a week without weighing them-

selves, they gained weight, the findings showed. "The more often you weigh yourself the more weight you lose," said lead author Elina Helander from Tempere Univeristy of Technology in Finland. For the study, the researchers analysed 2,838 weight measurements from 40 overweight individuals who indicated that weight loss was a personal goal or concern.

The researchers found that weight loss was related to how often individuals weighed themselves. It may be that less serious dieters weight themselves less or that dieters who stop losing weight stop weighting themselves, the researchers noted, adding that this observational study does not indicate a cause and effect relationship between weigh-ins and weight loss.

electro-chromatic rear view mirror with integrated compass. The Camry Hybrid SE starts at $29,635; the Camry Hybrid LE and Hybrid XLE start at $28,410 and $34,500 respectively. Our tester was the new sportier XSE model with a 3.5-litre V-6 with six-speed automatic transmission starting at $33,650. The XSE adds premium navigation, 10-speaker JBL audio, the blind spot monitor, rear

centre stack and a segment-first available wireless charging system for select smartphones. The instrument panel features a new 4.2-inch TFT screen fitted between the three-dimensional Optitron gauges on the SE, XLE and XSE models. The Camry interior remains a plush, comfortable place to be with decent leg and head room in all areas and great visibil-

through sweeping corners and tight bends. Unlike some of its softer sprung competition, the new Camry has smooth and refined handling. In short there is nothing much to complain about the new 2015 Camry. It remains a well-priced, reliable, well-built mid-size sedan that continues to do its job well. Only this time around Toyota have improved and made it look

On the road the Camry XSE’s smooth, powerful V6 engines proves to be a refined, well-engineered piece of kit with enough power in all situations. Torque comes on strong all the way through the power band and allows for seamless up and down shifts from the well- calibrated transmission. 2015 Honda fit: One size Fit is the coolest new subcompact on the block

By Autoreview man

Completely redesigned for 2015, the Honda Fit is a fun, supremely versatile subcompact. Now in its third generation, the Fit has been given a comprehensive re-imagining. It is better looking, more fuel efficient, and has more interior room, extra standard features, more power and a higher-quality interior. Incredibly pricing is very much the same! On the outside, the 2015 Fit although shorter than the previous-generation Fit, it is slightly wider with a 30 mm wheelbase stretch. The result is more interior room in every dimension. Sadly the wonderful Ferrari- type headlights of the original Fit are now more, but it is still a pretty, smart looking car to behold with its clean lines Thankfully Honda has kept the one unique feature that made the Fit so popular which is the exclusive “Magic Seats.” Honda’s rear Magic Seats fold completely flat to increase the trunk volume, but the bench seat can also flip up vertically, allowing for a roomy 1.2metre tall space in the middle of the car for carrying tall, bulky items. It is

a unique feature in the subcompact class and offers o much flexibility. The Fit’s engine is also all-new; comprising of a 1.5-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine with 130 hp (Up 23 hp from before.) Transmission choice includes a six-speed manual or an automatic continuously variable unit (CVT). The interior has a thorough redesign, with a twotone material theme and a smart, ultra- modern dash. Standard equipment on the Fit is pretty amazing comprising of: Rear-view camera, five-inch colour LCD touchscreen, LED rear brake light, hill start assist, driver’s seat height adjuster, Bluetooth connectivity, heated side mirrors, power door locks, remote keyless entry, 15inch steel wheels (Base model), USB ports, power windows, mirrors and locks. Options include: Heated seats, cargo cover, seveninch touchscreen, air conditioning, cruise control, continuously variable transmission, sunroof, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, leather seats, smart key with push-button start, 16-inch alloy wheels, lane watch, paddle shifters, leather-

wrapped steering wheel, navigation, automatic headlights. Incredibly, even the base model Fit comes with a reverse camera and a five-inch touchscreen as standard equipment! Meanwhile up market Fits get an upgrade to a seven-inch touchscreen. Up graded Fits also gain the super-cool Honda Lane Watch system, which displays an image of the driver’s right-hand blind spot when the turn signal is activated. Once again a unique feature not offered on any of the Fits rivals. Interior ambience is highlighted by comfortable seats, plenty of room in the leg, shoulder and head room department.

Of course the Magic seats and a huge centre console storage compartment big enough to hold a notebook or tablet laptop are also a bonus. Honda also does the incredible by keeping the pricing almost unchanged. The base Fit DX pricing starts at $14,495 for the six-speed manual transmission and max’s out to $22,595 for the fully loaded CVT EX-L Navi trim line. On the road, the Fit has decent enough acceleration and lots of pep from the four cylinder engine. The best combination think is the six speed manual transmission that makes good use of the Fits torque curve. With 130 hp

at 6,500 rpm and 114 pound-feet of torque at 4,600 rpm at your disposal it’s no slouch. The six speed manual offers satisfying smooth gear changes and with the light clutch allows for quick precise up and down shifts. The new engine and transmissions really change the nature of the Fit from so –so to downright sporty in the 2015 version. Add the

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

well-weighted steering and supple suspension and the Fit feel agile and sporty- yet comfortable. The fit is also economical with a Natural Resources Canada fuel economy rating for the manual transmission at 7.0 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.4 on the highway while the CVT is rated at 7.0 and 5.7, respectively. No real issues for the Fit. The engine and CVT can be a bit buzzy under full load, but nothing to worry about. To conclude the Honda Fit has always been a favourite of mine, along with many other Auto Journalist I know, and this version is superb. Adding a huge level of refinement, quality and upscale features into the sub-compact market – the new 2015 Honda Fit is a winner in every ways. Highly recommended for families and young singles everywhere. 2015 Honda Fit: Priced from $14,495 - $22,595
