Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan, under international pressure to curb terrorism and terrorist activities based on its territory, will conduct the trial of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, on day-today basis, local media reported. The Islamabad High Court, whose earlier order for conditional release of Lakhvi raised the hackles of India, said that the hearing in the trial would be held on daily basis, the Dawn reported. The court's ruling came on a request from prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar, who said: "This case is crucial. The world's eyes are on this case. Therefore, it should be heard daily by IHC.” The hearing in the case will commence Friday. The trial, being conducted by Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), has seen much flip-flop in recent months. Last year Dec 29, the Islamabad High Court ordered conditional release of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, drawing strong protests from India, which summoned the Pakistani envoy to "convey concern" over the development. On Dec 30, Lakhvi was sent by a Pakistani court to two-day judicial remand in an abduction case, after India again strongly raised concerns over his imminent release. India has relentlessly sought Lakhvi since the November 2008 attacks killed 166 persons, including several foreigners, in Mumbai, causing international

Election to be quashed if criminal record not disclosed: Supreme Court New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Thursday ruled that suppression or non-disclosure of information about serious crimes by a candidate at the time of filing nomination interferes with the voters' right to make an informed choice and the election of such a candidate is liable to be set aside. When there is non-disclosure of the offences pertaining to heinous or serious offence or offences relating to corruption or moral turpitude at the time of filing of nomination paper, it creates an impediment in the free exercise of electoral right by a voter, said a bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Prafulla C. Pant. "As a candidate has the special knowledge of the pending cases against him where cognizance has been taken or charges have been framed and there is non-disclosure on his part, it would amount to undue influence. Therefore, election is to be declared null and void by the Election Tribunal under Section 100(1)(b) of the 1951 Act," the court said. "Concealment or suppression of this nature deprives the voters to make an informed and advised choice as a consequence of which it would come within the compartment of direct or indirect interference or attempt to interfere with the free exercise of the right to vote by the electorate, on the part of the candidate," Justice Misra said pronouncing the judgment.

Making it clear that disclosure of criminal antecedents by a candidate was a statutory obligation, the court said: "Disclosure of criminal antecedents of a candidate, especially, pertaining to heinous or serious offence or offences relating to corruption or moral turpitude at the time of filing of nomination paper as mandated by law is a categorical imperative." "The question whether it materially affects the election or not would not arise in a case of this nature," said the court as it dismissed an appeal by Krishnamurthy who was elected as the president of Thekampatti panchayat in Mettupalayam taluka of Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore Oct 13, 2006. Krishnamurthy involved in eight cases relating to embezzlement. The validity of Krishnamurthy's election was challenged on the ground that he had filed a false declaration suppressing the details of criminal cases pending trial against him and, therefore, his nomination deserved to be rejected by the returning officer. Hearing Krishnamurthy's appeal, the Madras High Court agreed with the ultimate conclusion of the tribunal but for a different reason. The apex court, while dismissing the appeal by Krishnamurthy, said: "Ex consequenti, the appeal, being sans substance, stands dismissed with costs, which is assessed at Rs.50,000."

uproar and a diplomatic storm. Lakhvi was arrested in February 2009 for masterminding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that left 166 people dead and over 300 injured. He was indicted with six others Nov 25, 2009, on the basis of the confessional statement of the lone surviving attacker Ajmal Kasab, who was caught, tried and executed in India Nov 21, 2012. Lakhvi, 54, was reportedly arrested from the headquarters of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant group in Muzaffarabad, soon after the attacks. The six other men facing the trial for their alleged involvement in Mumbai strikes are Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Younas Anjum, Jamil Ahmed, Mazhar Iqbal and Abdul Majid. At the time of the attacks, Lakhvi was believed to be the operational head of the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) that has been accused by India of being the perpetrator. Lakhvi, along with Zarar Shah, was allegedly the key planner of the Mumbai attacks.

Goswami steps down as home secretary, Goyal replaces him New Delhi (IANS): Home Secretary Anil Goswami resigned Wednesday after he was told by the government to put in his papers over his alleged role in trying to stall the arrest of former Congress minister Matang Sinh in the multicrore-rupee Saradha scam. The government appointed L.C. Goyal as his replacement a few hours later. Official sources said Goswami handed over his resignation to Home Minister Rajnath Singh. It was subsequently accepted by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet

(ACC). "The home secretary has resigned. He met the home minister and submitted his resignation," said an official who did not want to be identified. Goswami is the third senior official who had to resign or whose services were curtailed by the government over the past few weeks. Sujatha Singh was removed as foreign secretary last week while the term of Avinash Chander as chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation

(DRDO) was curtailed last month. K. Durga Prasad was apparently removed as chief of the Special Protection Group (SPG) during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Nepal and he has now been posted in the Central Reserve Police Force. Sources said Goswami was summoned by Rajnath Singh earlier in the day. He is learnt to have explained his position following the controversy over his calls to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials dealing with the

Saradha chit fund scam case. The sources said there have been top-level consultations in the government over the issue. Rajnath Singh is also learnt to have spoken to CBI director Anil Sinha. Goswami, an IAS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre, was appointed home secretary during the term of the previous United Progressive Alliance government. There were reports that he had spoken to CBI officers following their decision to arrest Matang Sinh.

Matang Sinh, who was minister of state in the P.V. Narasimha Rao government in the 1990s, was arrested Jan 31 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Kolkata on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation of funds in the Saradha scam. The government issued a release Wednesday night saying Goyal was the new home secretary and his term will be for two years. "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of L.C. Goyal, IAS,

secretary, department of rural development, as home secretary for a period of two years from the date of taking over charge vice Anil Goswami," the release said. It also said the ACC has also approved request of Goswami for "voluntarily retiring" from service with immediate effect by waiving the notice period. The release said the term of Goswami as home secretary stands curtailed with immediate effect. Goyal is an IAS officer of 1979 batch.

Kejriwal's claims on EVMs incorrect: Election Commission New Delhi (IANS): The Election Commission Wednesday termed as "totally incorrect and unacceptable" AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal's contention that electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the Feb 7 Delhi assembly polls have been tampered with. "Your comments about tampering of four EVMs in 38-Delhi Cantt assembly constituency is totally incorrect and unacceptable. The commission expected you to ascertain the correct facts on EVMs before making the comment on social media," the poll panel said in a letter to Kejriwal. The Election

Commission said the Aam Aadmi Party's representative was present during the sealing of the strong room in 38-Delhi Cantt. In a tweet earlier in the day, Kejriwal has said: "We suspect EVM tampering. Tried to meet CEC (chief election commissioner) yesterday (Tuesday). He was busy. Hope we will be able to meet him today (Wednesday)." "We urge CEC to allow us to put a banner outside each booth educating voters about EVMs," he said. In a separate statement, the commission allayed fears about tam-

Huge crowds pointer to direction wind is blowing: Modi New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday said the huge turnout at his election rally here -- his last before the Delhi assembly polls Saturday -- was a clear indication of "the direction the wind is blowing" and appealed to voters to bring a stable BJP government in Delhi. He also took a dig at surveys ahead of the Feb 7 polls that predicted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) having an advantage. Addressing a rally in south Delhi's Ambedkar Nagar, Modi said for a strong nation it was necessary to have a strong BJP government and appealed to voters not to give an "unstable" government to Delhi.

"I am seeing the huge crowd here. It is much bigger than when I would address rallies ahead of the general election. It gives an indication of the direction the wind is blowing," he said. He urged the people to vote in the BJP with full majority in Delhi. "Don't bring in an unstable government. It is the country's capital. Its fate should not be left hanging. Please vote for progress, vote for the BJP," he said. Modi said his aim was to bring development to the country and bring change to the lives of the poor in Delhi. He said the "entire world now considers India as an

important force and it is happening because of your votes that brought the BJP with majority to the Centre". Taking a dig at the opposition parties, he said his opponents are troubled by him, because "they are not able to digest how Modi, a poor man, has come to be the prime minister". He said in the last Lok Sabha election, surveys said he would lose by three lakh votes in Varanasi, but he won. He said under the leadership of Kiran Bedi, who has been named the Bharatiya Janata Party's chief ministerial candidate, the party will begin development of Delhi. "We are not going to stop for a single moment because, we

have to clear up the mess of the last 16 years in the next five years," Modi said, adding that the goal of his politics is development. "Development to bring a change in the lives of the poor," Modi said, adding that the BJP would ensure education for the children of the poor, medical care for the aged and also "pucca" houses in place of shanties with electricity, water and toilets. Modi also defended the BJP over the "typographical error" of describing northeastern people as "immigrants" in the party Vision Document and decried attempts to rake up the issue for political mileage. "Attempts are being made to

provoke people from the northeast ... a mistake was made and the party accepted it," Modi said at the rally. "No one should play with the unity of the country for political benefits. Brothers should not be pitted against brothers," the prime minister. Modi said he has visited the northeastern states many times and the BJP government would develop the region "more than what has happened in the past 60 years". In her speech, Bedi said if she became the chief minister, her first priority would be to develop the city's slum clusters and improve the quality of life of the people living there.

Jaitley calls AAP propagandist, Kejriwal dares him to arrest New Delhi (IANS): It was yet another day of political slugfest between the AAP and the BJP in the run-up to the Feb 7 Delhi assembly polls with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Wednesday calling the former a "brilliant propagandist" who wears the "label of honesty" on its sleeve. However, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, whose party has been accused of receiving dubious funds, dared Jaitley to arrest him if he had done anything wrong. Meanwhile, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed Wednesday in Delhi High Court, seeking a CBI probe into foreign funds the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) received in the past and now allegedly in violation of law. In an acerbic post on the Bharatiya Janata Party's website,

Jaitley said "Kejriwal is not a stranger to the tax laws" and "knew what his party was doing". Jaitley was referring to the Rs.2 crore funding to the Aam Aadmi Party allegedly received from bogus companies. A breakaway group of the AAP has levelled these charges. Jaitley posed questions to Kejriwal. "If Kejriwal were still a revenue service officer and a case of such money conversion through sham companies resulting in donations to a political party had landed on his table, what would he have done? "Would he have asked the assessee to write a letter to the chief justice of the Supreme Court of India or allowed him to argue that a payment by cheque to political parties forgives all sins

of black money conversion?" "Would he have arrested the fraudulent assessee under the Indian Penal Code rather than

proceeding under the Income Tax Act? "He should be honest enough to tell the people what "Arvind Kejriwal, IRS (India Revenue Service Officer)" would have done under these circumstances," Jaitley further wrote. Kejriwal once again refuted the charges, asserting that his party took money through cheques. "If I have done wrong, tell finance minister to arrest me. I am ready for a probe, these are false allegations," Kejriwal said. In another related development, advocate M.L. Sharma filed an application in the ongoing case that sought registration of a criminal case against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and others for allegedly receiving foreign funds in violation of law. Sharma claimed that it has

been revealed that lakhs of phone calls from Dubai and other countries have been made to Delhi, especially to the Muslim community, for supporting AAP's election. Meanwhile, the Election Commission cleared Kejriwal of charges of his name being incorrectly enrolled in the electoral list in his New Delhi constituency. The poll panel's lawyer told a court that Kejriwal's inclusion in the electoral rolls was correct. The pleas against Kejriwal were filed by Congress leader and his poll opponent Kiran Walia and NGO Maulik Bharat Tru. They had questioned the legality of Kejriwal's candidature from New Delhi constituency as he was a resident of neighbouring Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Rajasthan government defends 'Surya Namaskar' in schools Jaipur (IANS): The BJP-led Rajasthan government Wednesday defended its move to implement 'Surya Namaskar' (Sun worship) in schools across the state. "Surya Namaskar, yoga and meditation are good for physical and mental development of a child," Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Vasudev Devnani told IANS. The minister said the sun is not of any religion but it is the one which gives "Urja" (Energy) to all. "Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has already given her consent on this directive and we are not the only state as Madhya Pradesh has already

implemented it." "No one has come to me opposing it. I only know that three things which we made mandatory are good for the overall development of a child," the minister said. The state government Tuesday issued a directive, making Surya Namaskar, yoga and meditation mandatory in all government secondary and senior secondary schools. Under the directive issued by the state education department, initial five minutes will be spent on prayers, 10 minutes on yoga, meditation and Surya Namaskar and another five minutes on reading English and Hindi

newspapers. However, some of Muslim organi-

sations have raised strong opposition against the move.

"We are going to write to National Human Right Commission and lodge a formal complaint against it. We are also planning to seek legal advice on it," Khursheed Husain, president, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, told IANS. Younis Chopdar, secretary of Muslim Mahasabha Rajasthan, said: "We have already sent an e-mail to the chief minister opposing the directive. We are even thinking of not sending our community students to schools." Meanwhile, a teachers' body said the move has violated the right to freedom of religion guaranteed by the constitution.

Muslims want reservation, not Quran and computers: Owaisi

Pune (IANS): All India Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi Wednesday made an impassioned plea to the government to give reservation to the Muslim community to enable it join the national mainstream. Addressing a massive rally in Pune, the Lok Sabha member from Hyderabad indirectly referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statements offering Quran and laptops to Muslims during his election rallies in Pune before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. "Mr. Prime Minister, the Holy Quran we keep in our hearts, you can keep the computers. Just give us reservation and we shall make ourselves capable in all respects," Owaisi urged, amidst thunderous applause. He said that in the past 15 years of the CongressNationalist Congress Party rule in Maharashtra, the issue of

reservation was not resolved and called upon the present BJP Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to give quotas to Muslims based on social representation. "Why can't there be Muslim doctors, IAS, IPS officers? The community's population in Maharashtra is 11 percent or more than 12 million, but 70 percent live below the poverty line. Not a single Muslim MP was elected from here in the past few elections," he said, as the crowds cheered him. Owaisi said he was proud to be a Muslim, to wear a cap, sport a beard, and wear a 'sherwani' (a typical Muslim jacket) as the crowd chanted "Sher aaya, bhai Sher aaya" (Tiger has come...). "We wear this ordinary 'sherwani', locally stitched, as we are a poor community, unlike you Mr. Prime Minister. "We have no objections and

wish you have many more such specially stitched jackets from London, but Muslim youth are in a pathetic condition, they need reservation," Owaisi said, in a reference to Modi's wardrobe which became a topic of discussion during US President Barack Obama's recent visit to India. He said the Muslim community must be taken together in the BJP's slogan of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas", and Modi should ensure equal development of the minority community. Owaisi vowed to visit every corner of Maharashtra in favour of reservation. Dismissing contentions that Muslims did not contribute to the Indian freedom struggle, he said many people from the community sacrificed their lives for the country's independence. He said independent India's

first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was in favour of granting reservation to Muslims not on religious grounds, but on social grounds. Owaisi posed a direct question to Modi, asking: "Mr. Prime Minister, how did your friend Amit Shah secure a clean chit in the Sohrabuddin case so quickly? Why innocent Muslim youths languish for years in jail? "Try them in fast track courts. If there is no evidence against them, they must be released. If they are guilty, they must be punished." Most roads leading to Kauserbaug Hall, which is actually an open venue for weddings and other functions, were jammed. Huge crowds gathered on the roads, on building terraces, vehicles and tree tops, waiting to catch a glimpse of the fire-

brand leader at the 'Muslim Arakshan Parishad' organised by the Maharashtra and Mulnivasi Muslim Manch. Earlier Wednesday, police had slapped Owaisi with stringent conditions for speaking at the rally with warnings of action if he made any inflammatory statements. The rally, which was mired in uncertainties for the past couple of days following objections from the local Shiv Sena and the Pune Cantonment Board, saw police making over 300 preventive arrests of Shiv Sainiks who were planning to demonstrate at the venue. Virtually gagging Owaisi, police had directed Owaisi to refrain from provocative utterances which could create religious, linguistic or communal tension and the media was barred from covering the event live from the venue.

Indian American woman found guilty of foeticide Washington (IANS): A US court has found an Indian American woman guilty on charges of foeticide and felony neglect of a dependent after experiencing a miscarriage or what prosecutors claim was actually an illegal abortion. After six days of trial and testimony, a jury in South Bend, Indiana deliberated for less than five hours before finding Purvi Patel guilty Tuesday, according to ABC News. Patel faces up to 70

years in prison. She will be sentenced March 6. The testimony began with the doctor who found the baby in plastic bags inside a dumpster outside Moe's Southwest Grill in Granger, a restaurant Patel's parents owned. Patel took herself to an emergency room in South Bend in July 2013 while suffering heavy vaginal bleeding, according to a report in RH Reality Check. Patel, who lives at home in a conservative Hindu household, initial-

ly denied to doctors that she had been pregnant. But after doctors persisted, Patel acknowledged she had miscarried, telling them the foetus was stillborn and that she had placed it in a bag and placed the bag in a dumpster. Police also questioned Patel and searched her cell phone while she was in the hospital, which led them to a series of text messages the prosecution claimed made the case for Patel's illegal abortion and felony charges.

The prosecution claimed Patel, in those text messages, admitted to ordering drugs online to terminate an unexpected pregnancy. Patel allegedly ordered abortion-induc-

ing drugs from Hong Kong, which caused her to have the child on the floor of her bathroom. After the verdict, the state asked the judge to revoke Patel's bond and the judge granted that

request, according to WSBT-TV. Officers put Patel in handcuffs and took her to the St. Joseph County jail. She later posted a $10,000 bail.

Socialism, secularism hold country together: Punjab CM Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Friday said that the twin principles of socialism and secularism formed the underlying spirit of the Indian Constitution and any deviation from these two basic tenets would be against the interest of the country. "India being a land of diversities is endowed with people

hailing from various religions, castes, creeds and linguistic backgrounds. Our forefathers had laid special thrust on the concepts of socialism and secularism in our Constitution," Badal said, talking to reporters after an event in Kapurthala district, around 160 km from here. Badal was reacting to a recent controversy over these words being omitted from

advertisements issued by the central government on the occasion of the Republic Day. Badal said the ideals of socialism and secularism were an integral part of our polity. "So, there is hardly any need for even debating on this issue," Badal said. Citing the example of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Badal said that even great monarchs

like him had made the principle of secularism an essential part of their governance. "No country can survive without these doctrines as they firmly hold its social fabric together," he added. The Shiromani Akali Dal, of which Badal is the patron, is part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.

Now no VAT assesment for Punjab traders with under Rs.10 million turnover Badal announced abolition of the existing e-transportation of information within Punjab (eTrip) for iron and steel, yarn, vegetable oils, mustard oil, cotton and paper board. "From today onwards, there would be no e-trip applicable in the state. This is a long pending demand of industrialists and

traders as they were resisting the existing VAT collection system of the excise and taxation department against tax-evasion," he said. The announcement was made by Badal at a meeting with traders and dealers from Punjab at Zirakpur, 15 km from Chandigarh, Friday.

Refused liquor, jail official shoots tavern manager Chandigarh (IANS): Refusal to give more liquor to an already drunk prison official cost a tavern manager his life as he was shot dead in Punjab's Bathinda town Tuesday. The accused, Bohad Singh, an assistant jail superintendent in Sangrur prison, allegedly got infuriated after tavern staff at a liquor vend-cum-tavern near the bus stand in Bathinda town, 200 km from Chandigarh, refused to

serve him more liquor. Bohad Singh fired at the tavern manager, Ranjiv Singh, with his service revolver from close range. The man died due to gunshot wounds in his head. The accused had earlier tried to shoot at two other staff members as well but the weapon did not fire. Police said a case of murder has been registered and raids were being conducted to arrest the jail official.

No spare water for any state: Badal Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Wednesday said his state did not have any spare water to share with other states, a day after his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar said the state would approach the Supreme Court to seek completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal in neighbouring Punjab. "Punjab does not have even a single drop of excess water for any other state," Badal told reporters in Mohali near here Wednesday. "The previous Congress government at the centre meted out step-motherly treatment to Punjab by denying its legitimate share of river water. Grave injustice was done to Punjab by denying its share of river water in accordance to the Riparian Law," Badal said. The Haryana government has been saying that it was firm in getting its share of water from the Ravi and Beas rivers in adjoining Punjab through the SYL canal.

NFL Super Bowl 49 sets US television viewership record New York (IANS): New England Patriots' dramatic victory over Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 49 set a new US television viewership record by attracting 114.4 million viewers, telecaster NBC said. The Patriots' 28-24 triumph over the Seahawks in the National Football League's championship spectacle Sunday lured 2.2 million

more viewers than the previous record holder, the telecast of last year's Super Bowl when Seattle routed Denver Broncos, reports Xinhua. "Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl ranks among the most exciting sporting events in US history," NBC Sports group chairman Mark Lazarus said Monday. The Patriots rallied from a 14-24 deficit with two fourth-

quarter touchdowns and denied Seattle from the oneyard line in the dying seconds to capture the crown. Seven of the eight most watched shows in US history are Super Bowl telecasts, with the past six NFL title games filling the top six spots ahead of the only scripted programme, the 1983 final episode of the TV series M.A.S.H., which

attracted a US audience of 106 million people. Viewership peaked at 120.8 million during the fourth quarter, when Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Tom Brady completed 13for-15 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns to rally New England to victory. Singer Katy Perry's halftime show was watched by 118.5 million viewers.

Culture of intimidation prevalent within FIFA: Prince Ali Doha (IANS): FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein of Jordon, one of three rivals contesting against

incumbent Josep "Sepp" Blatter in the elections, has warned of a culture of intimidation within world football’s govern-

ing body. “There is a culture of intimidation within Fifa. But this is a candidacy for the whole world,” Ali

was quoted as saying by guardian.co.uk Tuesday. The 39-year-old Ali also claimed he would be the perfect candidate

for the top job. “In the past, people have taken a principled stand and have been punished for it. I hope

Ali said he planned to meet with Figo and van Praag “as soon as possible”. “Luis Figo is a friend of mine and Michael van Praag is someone I respect a lot. I would like to sit with them and have a discussion. 4 Ways To Kick Away Negative Thoughts Before Sleeping some of the other relaxation techniques below can make the transition a little easier.

SUDOKU

2. Talk positively to yourself

1. Head to bed earlier I one recent study conducted by Binghamton University, researchers looked at participants’ propensities to worry, ruminate, or stress (all gauges of repetitive negative thinking) and at their sleep habits. They found that people who preferred to go to sleep late (evening types) had higher levels of negative thoughts compared to early sleepers (morning types). The same was true for people who slept for shorter periods of time overall.

HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. There are nine zones in the puzzle. Do not enter a digit into a box if it already appears elsewhere in the same zone, row across or column down the entire puzzle. Solve Time: Under 13 min. - Genius; 13-17 min - Scholar; 17-21 min - Smart; 21-25 min - Not bad; 25+ min - Keep practising DIFFICULTY LEVEL : MEDIUM

If you aren’t getting at least seven hours of sleep each night or you tend to keep late hours, this means it could prove helpful to shift your sleep schedule earlier. Try gradually moving your bedtime up in 15 to 30 minute increments to create a schedule that allows you to get enough sleep. Keeping fairly consistent bedtimes throughout the week and practicing

One method of countering negative thoughts is to practice positive self-talk, popular with cognitive behavioral therapists. Essentially, negative selftalk involves habits like focusing on the cons of a situation and not the pros, personalizing blame, anticipating the worst, and polarizing between good and bad with no inbetween. The idea is that when you catch yourself dwelling on negative thoughts, you consciously work to assess its validity and move on. Instead of obsessing over things that went wrong, look for solutions to the problem or do something to refocus your attention. (Positive affirmation, a prayer, or exercise, maybe.) Thinking about things you are grateful for can also be mood-booster, and one study found higher levels of gratitude correlated with better sleep. Smiley Face 3. Use guided relaxation or

visualization Guided relaxation can be helpful for clearing your mind and taking the focus off of negative thoughts. Essentially, a therapist or a recording guides you through a step-by-step process as you follow along. There are a few different types of guided relaxation program, and different types may feel more helpful to you than others. Traditional guided relaxation will work through relaxing your body and focusing on breathing. Guided visualization/imagery has you visualize a scene to occupy your a t t e n t i o n . Pr o g r e s s i v e m u s c l e relaxation takes a more physical approach of gradually tensing and relaxing different muscle groups. physical body and off of the thoughts that are bothering you. Breathing also affects heart rate, which can help you feel calmer. These techniques can be helpful for relaxing in bed, but can also be used anywhere whenever you feel stressed: Diaphragmatic breathing (breathing deeply through your stomach and exhaling slowly) Equal breathing (inhaling and exhaling for the same amount of time; counts of 4-6 seconds) Resistance breathing (breathing in and out via pursed lips or your nose) Breath moving (as you inhale, imagine you are moving the breath to the top of your head; as you exhale, move the breath to base of your spine)

Over 8,000 to take part in Kolkata Marathon Kolkata (IANS): Over 8,000 participants including elite runners, beginners, fitness enthusiasts, corporate teams and spirited youngsters will take part in the Rs.10 lakh [1 lakh = 100,000] prize money Kolkata Marathon to be held Feb 8. The race categories include full marathon (for men 42.195 km), 15 km (for men and women, prize money only for women) and the fun run of 5 km.

Sponsored by Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited, India's leading inte-

grated infrastructure institution, the eighth edition of the Kolkata Marathon will have

timing chips for all runners in the full race and the 15 km race. The timing chips will allow tracking of each runner from the second he crosses the start line to the all-important finishing line. Stalwarts from the entertainment and sports fraternity like Jisshu Sengupta, Parambrata Chatterjee, Raima Sen, Sayantika Banerjee, Payel Sarkar, Abir Chatterjee, Manoj Tewary will be present to sup-

port the event Sunday, the organisers Kolkata Marathon Committee told the media Tuesday. The first prize winner in the full marathon will be richer by Rs.3.2 lakh, with the second and third position finishers getting Rs.1.6 lakh and Rs.80,000 respectively. In the 15-km race, the winning woman participant will get a purse of Rs.1.2 lakh, with the second slated to earn Rs.55,000 and the third

Rs.30,000. "A healthy nation starts with individual fitness which is why this year, the theme of the marathon is 'Fit India, Swasth Bharat'," said Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited vice chairman Sunil Kanoria. The races will be flagged off from Indira Gandhi Sarani (erstwhile Red Road) by housing and youth services department minister Aroop Biswas.

Fernandez's departure won't affect Indian boxing: Akhil Kumar New Delhi (IANS): The two-year AIBA ban on coach Blas Iglesias Fernandez and his subsequent departure for home will not affect Indian boxing much as the sport will move on, Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning pugilist Akhil Kumar asserted Tuesday. "I was very close to Fernandez. He is a very good and professional coach. He is the only foreigner to win the presti-

gious Dronacharya award for coaching. The way I see it, if he stays, it is good but even if he is not there, the sport will move on," Akhil said here during a promotional event by cosmetics major Oriflame. The Cuban, who has coached Indian boxers for more than 20 years, was banned by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) for supporting Sarita Devi during the 2014 Incheon

Asian Games. Sarita had refused to accept the bronze medal at the podium during the ceremony after her controversial semi-final loss. While Sarita was handed a one-year ban,

Fernandez was banned for two years. He left for home recently. "The thing is, Fernandez is there because of boxing and not the other way around. The advantage of having someone like him is that since he has coached for so long, he knows and understands the players. That way he can benefit the boxers," said the 33-year-old, who won the CWG gold in 2006. "But boxers as well as

coaches keep changing. To be honest, to say that Fernandez's going will drastically affect the Indian boxing scene would be wrong. Indian coaches are also very good and have worked very hard. I repeat, if he stays, it will be good but even if he leaves, boxing will still continue." On the personal front, Akhil said he is aiming for qualification at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics after failing to do so in

2012. "Not just me, but everyone is aiming for the Rio Olympics. That is the only aim ... to qualify for the quadrennial event," he said. "I am trying like I always have. First there is the Asian Championships followed by the World Championships. Good performances in these will get us qualification for the 2016 Games," said the Arjuna awardee.

Cristiano Ronaldo worth one billion pounds, says agent Madrid (IANS): Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes Tuesday revealed that the Real Madrid prolific striker would sell for at least 300 million pounds if Spanish

giants Real Madrid wish to set him free anytime soon. Asked how much Ronaldo was worth, Mendes said: "Cristano Ronaldo? One billion. His buyout clause one billion, so it is one billion. It is

impossible to buy someone like him. "If for any reason the club decides to sell him tomorrow for 300 million, someone will pay," Mendes was quoted as saying by bbc.com.

Mendes went to the extent of saying that the 29year-old was the “best sportsman ever” and was incomparable to any other player. "He is the best player ever in the world. You can't

compare him with anybody else," added Mendes. Questioned if Ronaldo will finish his career at Madrid, Mendes said "for sure". "He will not leave Real Madrid."

PAKISTAN

After Dec 16 massacre, Pakistan boosts security in schools Islamabad (IANS): Barbed wire, surveillance cameras and snipers have become a common sight in the schools of KhyberPakhtunkhwa province (KPK) in Pakistan. Private schools in this province, which lies along Pakistan's northwest frontier, have been instructed by the government to arrange security guards and metal detectors. School officials remain

tight-lipped about the threats they have received from militants, but stories have emerged of empty coffins being sent to principals as an ominous signal of the danger that could lie ahead, CNN reported. This has come after the brutal Dec 16 attack by the Te h r e e k - e - Ta l i b a n Pakistan (TTP) on the Army Public School in Peshawar that left over 140

students and staff dead. After the attack, TTP s p o k e s p e r s o n Mohammed Khurrassani said the bloodshed was revenge for the killing of hundreds of innocent tribesmen during repeated army operations in provinces including South Waziristan, North Waziristan and the Khyber Agency. Last month, the provincial government pledged

to spend Pakistani Rs.7 billion ($69 million) on enhancing security at government-run schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, KPK Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani says it is still not enough to prevent attacks on the 35,000 government-run schools in the province. So, in an extraordinary measure, the KPK government has allowed teach-

ers with firearm licences to keep guns at school. At a shooting range in Peshawar, the KhyberPakhtunkhwa police force has started basic weapons training sessions for teachers interested in learning how to use firearms. Faisal Mukhtar, a police superintendent, says that one of the reasons for arming teachers is that they can hold militants at bay during a potential

attack until security forces arrive. Around 20 female teachers have already received training from a polce inspector. Most had never held a gun before. "The tragedy of Dec 16 has emboldened these women," Altaf said. "Most of them were mothers and they were helpless then -they will never be helpless again."

Imran Khan demands speaker's suspension

Islamabad (IANS): Pakistani cricketerturned-politician Imran Khan Monday demanded suspension of National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq till investigation is completed into the alleged rigging in the National Assembly constituency-122 in the 2013 general elections. During a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (Retd.) Sardar Mohammad Raza, Imran Khan said his party has also requested the CEC to form two task force groups to look into giving overseas Pakistanis a right to vote as well as the possibility to introduce an electronic voting system for next general elections, Dawn reported. The meeting took place two days after an election tribunal in Lahore turned down Imran Khan's plea for action against an inquiry commission that inspected the record of election in the NA-122. Imran Khan, who is chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), has alleged that the election tribunal commission did not follow its terms of reference. The PTI chief had sought reinspection of the records of certain polling stations in the constituency. Disposing of the application, tri-

bunal member Kazim Ali Malik said that at this stage it was premature for the PTI leader to seek re-inspection. The tribunal has set Feb 7 as the next date for hearing.

Retired sessions judge Ghulam Hussain Awan was appointed by the tribunal to inspect the records. The result of the election remained unchanged after the process.

After an audit of a number of polling stations in NA-122 constituency, both the ruling PML-N and the PTI have been making contradictory claims.

Abducted Hindu doctor released in Pakistan Islamabad (IANS): Two months after being kidnapped from Pakistan's Quetta city, Manoj Kumar, a Hindu doctor, was released by his captors in exchange for ransom, a media report said Monday. Some gunmen had kidnapped Kumar from Quetta's Industrial Police Station area Dec 2 last year. They released him in the city's Hazar Ganji area after a ransom was paid Sunday night, Dawn reported. After being released, Kumar said: "I do not know where I was kept?" He said the captors used to give him only one square meal a day. "I was set free following payment of ransom. I was kept in one small room and I was unaware about the outer world." According to family sources, the doctor was set free after a payment of 14 million Pakistani rupees (over 8.5 million Indian rupees). Senior Superintendent of Police Operations, Quetta, Aetezzaz Goraya also confirmed that the doctor was set free after payment of ransom.

2015 Mitsubishi Mirage: Canada’s most fuel efficient sedan is now on sale With fuel economy rated at 4.4 L/100 km (64 mpg) in highway driving, the brand new Mitsubishi Mirage is rated as Canada’s most fuel efficient, gasolinepowered subcompact now on sale according to Mitsubishi. The small 1.2 liter three cylinder engine delivers Mirage’s combined city/highway fuel economy of 4.9 L/100 km (58 mpg) and, for city driving, 5.3 L/100 km (53 mpg) for CVTequipped models. The entr y-level Mirage SE with five-speed, manual transmission is rated at 5.3 L/100 km (53 mpg) in combined driving, 4.6 L/100 km (62 mpg) high-

way and 5.9 L/100 km (48 mpg) in city driving. Based on the “Global Small concept car”, the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Mirage becomes the fifth model in Mitsubishi’s Canadian line-up. The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage line up starts at $12,498 for the base ES and arrives standard with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, USB/iPod connectivity, an engine immobilizer, and a manual transmission. A CVT transmission can be had for an extra $1,200. The basic Mirage cost a paltry $9,988 and for that price it is a pretty basic.

Safety wise All Mirage models get stability control, ABS with EBD, traction control, three-point seatbelts for all seats, pretensioning front seatbelts with heightadjustable pivots, ISOFIX child seat anchorages and six airbags (front, front side and curtain.) In addition the Mirage is designed with Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body system. RISE combines an impact energy-absorb-

ing front end with a high-rigidity cabin structure. The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage also offers seven airbags, stability control, ABS, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) as standard equipment across the line. Interior wise, Mitsubishi keeps the price down with a smart, no frills cabin with simple controls. Easy to read dials, display, plain big buttons and an absence of too

many features; such as: expensive optional touch screens, reversing or navigation systems. The seats are cloth and the plastic trim -durable and well fitted... Incabin storage consists of three cupholders, pockets in the front door, a deep storage tray at the base of the centre stack, and a reasonably sized glove box. The rear cargo room is impressive with a large trunk and with the rear seats folded, total capacity amounts to 487 litres.

Trunk space is otherwise 235 litres, and the 60/40 split rear seatbacks offer more versatility. The front seats are firm and comfortable and heat up well when the heated seat buttons are pressed. Legroom and head room is good as well up front with decent visibility and sight lines. The rear seats are also firm and legroom is acceptable for this class of sub compact- meaning good for small adults or tall teens. The Mirage is backed by perhaps the warranty in the world – 10 years or 160,000 km limited powertrain, five years or 100,000 km limited new vehicle and five years, unlimited mileage roadside assistance and must not be overlooked. 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage subcompact hatchback. Base priced from $9,988 - $15,898

Youth dictates progress of cinema: Amitabh Bachchan IN his over four decades of tryst with the Hindi film industry, Amitabh Bachchan has witnessed a continuous shift in the movie-making business, and he credits most changes to the "different and unusual" demands of the youth. "It has changed a lot and is changing," the 72-year-old veteran told IANS when asked to define of the taste of audience nowadays and whether they go for stars or scripts. "I think the younger generation is dictating what it wants. They want to see something different, something which is not usual and that's how cinema is progressing," he added. The Big B spoke to IANS on a visit to New Delhi for the promotion of his forthcoming film "Shamitabh", where he is sharing screen with much younger actors like Dhanush and Akshara Hassan. He hopes "Shamitabh" turns out to be a project that adds to the bundle

of new ideas, concepts and thoughts prevalent today. "There is huge progression as far as that thinking is concerned," said the thespian in his distinct baritone. He's as impressed by his costars Dhanush and Akshara as he's with the young audience. "This younger generation is wonderful to work with. They do their role, they come prepared, and every day is a challenging moment for all of us,"

he said, adding that they work together as professionals "for the film and for the product". "I have great admiration for Dhanush and Akshara," said the Big B, and praised the fact that younger film stars today are very competitive, but still appreciative towards each other's work. "They are very focussed, aggressive, determined and well-equipped. They know exactly what they want to do, how they want to do it, where they want to go and that just makes them very attractive and I am very impressed by them," he said. Big B, Dhanush and Akshara's "Shamitabh", directed by the acclaimed R. Balakrishnan aka Balki, releases Friday. And Amitabh has no qualms in admitting that despite delivering innumerable successful films and receiving endless awards for his performances, he still gets goosebumps when

his film is set to hit the screens. Sharing the reason behind it, the National Award-winning thespian and Padma Vibushan awardee said: "Every day I get goosebumps. I'm very apprehensive about what will people think. I think what any creative person thinks, especially if you are putting out your product to people who are spending money to see it, then obviously you want that they appreciate it and get their money's worth. Obviously there are going to be apprehensions and tensions." The story of "Shamitabh" takes a look at the journey of different individuals to stardom and how it eventually results in ego-clashes -- something that commoners relate with the glamour business and stars. Amitabh, who has often stated that he doesn't believe in ego, said that in personal life, he has never entertained the attribute. "It (ego) means that I have

excelled in something or I am better than million other people whom I know. So, no, I never entertain that quality. Ego doesn't exist for me," said tha actor, who at his age, is among the busiest Bollywood stars. From work on the television, to shooting multiple films, ad commercials, work towards social causes and keeping in touch with "extended family" on social media and now also working on the commentary for the India and Pakistan match during ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 -- the Big B has his hands quite full. Ask him about it, and he smiles just before saying that it is his "commitment to put my best foot forward" to whatever he takes up that keeps him going. "I have to honour my commitments, so I just go and honour them...I go out and do it with the best of my ability." (IANS)

Mithun's 'Hawaizaada' role modelled on Sanjay Leela Bhansali: Director VIBHU Puri, the director of the period offering "Hawaizaada", does not deny his guru Sanjay Leela Bhansali's contribution to its visual and emotional design. "I've studied in that school. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali school of filmmaking. I've learnt whatever I have to learn about filmmaking from him. So it is only natural that I hold his influence in my creativity," said Puri. The debutant director goes a

step further to reveal that the mentor-pupil relationship in "Hawaizaada" is modelled on his own stormy relationship with Bhansali. "The relationship between Mithun da (Mithun Chakraborty) and Ayushmann (Khurrana) is modelled on my own rapport with Sanjay sir. We'd have heated arguments and I'd storm off threatening to never return. "There is a sequence where

Ayushmann fights and returns to Mithunda after a few hours and Mithunda smirks, 'You are back in just two hours? I thought you'd be back after two days.' That's exactly what Sanjay sir said to me." Puri is very keen to show his film to his mentor. "Sanjay sir is shooting for 'Bajirao Mastani', but he has promised to see my film," he said. (IANS)

MOVIE REVIEW

Black Or White (PG) **** Family and race collide in Black or W h i t e . Pr e s e n t e d by D Films and playing at various Cineplex Odeon thea t r e s around B.C. and at the International Village Cinemas this insightful story chalks up some pretty strong memorable moments. Hot on the heels of the Oscar snubbed Selma homage to Dr. Martin Luther King comes an equally insightful film about race relations in The United States. Talk about perfect timing. Though the element of violence is secondary here there still is that distinct

undercurrent. Suffice it to say that this 120 drama looks at the root causes of some turmoil pent up in a rather dysfunctional family. Custody battles can be bitter affairs. So here writer/director Mike Binder concentrates on the struggle in raising a young Afro American girl. Child of the hour Eloise Jefferson finds herself caught in a tug of war between a man

and a woman, with a twist. Cute as a button is Jillian Estell who must choose between staying with her grandfather Elliot or going back to her dad Reggie Davis. Both men have a flaw or two, to put it mildly, with Kevin Costner (The Bodyguard) and Reggie Davis (42) perfectly suited as opposing forces. Mr. Binder succeeds in turning a simple family squabble into a real look at the deep divides between blacks and

whites south of the border. Strong support for the disenfranchised dad comes your way from a radiant Octavia Spencer (The Help) and the quick lipped Anthony Mackie as a sharp tongued lawyer. Sharp courtroom scenes, surprises and a sincere look at the struggles with addictions make Black or White a cut above most race themed movies.

Maharashtra government, police probe 'objectionable' show THE Maharashtra government and Mumbai police have initiated separate investigations into allegations of "abusive and filthy" language used by Bollywood director Karan Johar and actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh at an event in Mumbai in December. Following complaints about the below-the-belt contents of the "AIB Roast" programme viewed by a 4,000-strong live audience in a city stadium, Education and Culture Minister Vinod Tawde ordered a probe. "The culture department shall examine the videos' content and if found vulgar, action

would be initiated," Tawde said here Monday evening. "Initial investigation indicates that the show performed without a proper performance licence. We will register an FIR against them. Such vulgarity is a crime and based on facts which will emerge, the government will file a case against them," Tawde assured. In a parallel development, Brahman Ekta Seva Sansth president Akhilesh Tiwari lodged a police complaint expressing umbrage at the programme hosts, who he said used abusive, offensive remarks loaded with sexual overtones during

the comedy show. In his detailed fourpage complaint, Tiwari demanded action not

only against Johar, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh but also the show organisers and others.

Clips of the videos, which leaked out, were uploaded and went viral on various social net-

working sites and YouTube. Tiwari contended that the language used in the show was extremely abusive and ruined the fair image of Indian women and culture and also misguided today's youngsters. The videos showed the crowds, which included several leading female Bollywood actors like Sonakshi Sinha, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, besides a fair number of women audience enjoying, cheering, whistling and clapping at the offensives blatantly mouthed by the host trio. 'Hunterrr' makers dedicate film to Lord Kamdev

CREATIVE minds at Phantom Films have decided to dedicate the film production banner's new film "Hunterrr" to the Hindu god of love -Lord Kamdev -- with a special opening slide which will be placed at the beginning of the movie. The quirky surprise has come from Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Vikas

Bahl of Phantom Films. "Hunterrr" itself is said to be a coming-of-age film which revolves around an unassuming sex addict and his lustful journey through life. Going with the theme and the storyline, the trio has decided to use a different emblem in the film. "Mostly films in Bollywood have the logos

and images of Lord Ganesh or Shiv in the beginning. But for the first time in Indian cinema, a film will have an emblem of Lord Kamdev in the beginning of the film," said a production source. Harshavardhan Kulkarni, the director of the film, which stars Radhika Apte and Gulshan Devaiah, is excited about the idea.

Kulkarni said: "'Hunterrr' is a coming-of-age film, where the protagonist goes through a journey before he understands love. For me, Lord Kamdev is an inspiration behind this film. And we have decided to dedicate the film to him." The team is currently working on a special slide and will soon have it attached in the film. (IANS)

Lung cancer kills more For Your Health women than breast cancer in rich countries such as China, Indonesia, and several countries in Africa, lung cancer rates are likely to continue to increase for at least the next few decades without large-scale interventions to accelerate smoking cessation and reduce initiation, it warned. Specially, the report singled out China, saying lung cancer rates among women in China were higher than rates among women in some European countries despite a lower prevalence of smoking."This is thought to reflect indoor air pollution from unventilated coal-fueled stoves and cooking fumes," it wrote. The report, however, believed measures such as tobacco control, vaccination for liver and cervical cancers, early detection, and the promotion of physical activity and healthy dietary patterns could prevent "a substantial proportion" of the worldwide burden of cancer. It called for "a coordinated and intensified response" from governments, civil society, the private sector, and individuals around the world.

Washington, Feb 4 (IANS) Lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in females in developed countries and the change reflects the tobacco epidemic in women, according to a report released Wednesday by the American Cancer Society and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Lung cancer has been the top cancer killer for men for decades in developed countries. It is also the leading cancer killer in men in developing countries, where breast cancer still kills more women than lung cancer, Xinhua news agency cited the report as stating. The report, released on World Cancer Day, was based on the worldwide estimates of cancer incidence and mortality produced by the IARC for the year 2012. Overall, an estimated 14.1 million new cancer cases and 8.2 million cancer deaths occurred globally that year. Among the cancers, lung cancer was the most commonly diagnosed, with 1.8 million cases,

My wife is brutal in reviewing my films: Arjun Rampal ACTOR Arjun Rampal has a perfect partner in wife Mehr, who gives him "brutally honest" feedback on his movies. Arjun, who is awaiting the release of "Roy", which hits the theatres a day before Valentine's Day, told IANS: "She (Mehr) is brutally honest sometimes...too brutal when it comes to reviewing (my) films." That's also a reason why Arjun seeks her feedback. "When you make a film, you get so close to it that it's like your baby and your perception comes to an end. It's nice to get

a fresh and new outlook to it," he said. Arjun and Mehr were supermodels of their time. While Arjun moved into films, Mehr has stayed away. But if their daughters Mahikaa and Myraa wish to step into daddy's shoes, why not, says Arjun. "It's their choice. I will not say 'no' because the film industry is a wonderful place. Acting is a wonderful profession, and if they want to do it, I will support them," he said, and added that his daughters like to visit him on a film set sometimes to see

what goes behind the making of a movie. "Both of them are quite intrigued by it. It feels good," said the doting father, who believes parents should be friends with their children. Talking about himself and Mehr, he said: "I don't think any of us are strict. Today we have to be friends with our children because if you make an issue of something, then the children will do it. And if they start hiding things from you, things may get worse sometimes." (IANS)

'Qissa' to release Feb 20 R. Balki happy about Amitabh's Cricket World Cup stint on multiple platforms IRRFAN Khan and Tisca Chopra starrer Punjabi feature film "Qissa" will release in select Indian theatres, as well as on DVD and Video on Demand (VoD) formats, Feb 20. Directed by Anup Singh, the film will be shown in select theatres across Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Chennai and Kolkata. The VoD will be available on National Film D e v e l o p m e n t Corporation (NFDC) VoD website, read a statement. "We are leveraging the digital revolution, to make our diverse portfolio of films in various

Indian languages, accessible to a pan-Indian audience and developing a distribution model that goes beyond the traditional release pattern, which is driven by windows between each media platform," Nina Lath Gupta, managing director, NFDC, said in a statement. "Online and social media, with no traditional television spots or billboards, is primarily driving our marketing strategy, as we believe that the audiences for NFDC's portfolio of films are socially networked and digitally wired. This is the first time that a Punjabi

feature film will get such a scale of exposure," she added. "Qissa" is set in the post-partition era. The first film to be shot under the Indian-German coproduction treaty, it is an international co-production between India, Germany, Netherlands and France with funding from the NFDC, the Dutch Film Fund, Eurimage and German funds Medienboard BerlinBrandenburg and North Rhine Westphalia (NRW). The movie also stars Rasika Duggal and Tillotama Shome in key roles. (IANS)

ON Feb 15 when India plays a cricket match against Pakistan in Adelaide, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be doing the commentary alongside stalwarts of the cricket-commentary world Harsh Bhogle and Kapil Dev. "Shamitabh" director R. Balakrishnan is happy. This is part of an integration between broadcaster Star Sports and the makers of Big B's forthcoming film "Shamitabh". Talking about the change of pace for India's best-known baritone, filmmaker Balakrishnan aka Balki, said: "Mr. Bachchan's voice is the star of my film 'Shamitabh'. The plot revolves around the baritone." "I personally feel, and there are millions who will agree with me, that there is nothing that Mr. Bachchan's voice can't do. He has done voiceovers in many feature films and has also lent his voice to documentaries and social causes. The one thing that he hadn't done was cricket commentary."

The idea of getting the 72-year-old thespian was to do something universally appealing, and it works as a double strategy -- it not only serves as a great promotion of "Shamitabh" it also binds India and Pakistan together. "I think the two voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan unite India and Pakistan better than anything else," he said. "Shamitabh", releasing Friday, also stars Dhanush and marks the debut of Akshara Haasan in filmdom. (IANS)

Hyundai Canada launches new brand positioning campaign As part of a comprehensive strategy to continue elevating the Hyundai brand to a more premium position, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. is launching a bold new advertising campaign called “The H Factor”. Using the electrifying, critically acclaimed hit song “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, the dramatic 60 second TV commercial takes the viewer on a journey from the inception of Hyundai’s award winning design, to advanced engineering, specialized manufacturing, durability testing, and culminating in a world class driving experience that will surprise customers in, as the song’s lyrics put it, “a new age”. It ends with a shot of the company’s long-time spokesperson in Quebec, Guillaume Lemay-

Thivierge, who exits a premium Genesis sedan with a smile. “A new Hyundai is emerging,” said Don Romano, President and CEO, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “We will be relentless telling our story in unique and captivating ways. After years of developing award-winning, convention-shattering vehicles, we believe the new ‘H-Factor’ campaign will begin to give Hyundai the recognition it has long deserved.” According to Romano, the H-Factor campaign is part of a four-pronged strategy to elevate the Hyundai brand in the eyes of Canadians. He said: “The first step in our brand development plan was to successfully launch the all-new Genesis and Sonata, both of which received high-

profile category awards from AJAC [Automobile Journalists Association of Canada]. We also wanted to ensure world-class vehicles were housed in world-class facilities, so Hyundai launched a global image standards program to elevate dealership facilities with a more premium look. At the same time, we began a new training and certification initiative called ‘Hyundai Signature Certification’ that will

establish an environment where dealers continually strive to exceed customer expectations at every touch point. The final step was to launch a new brand campaign to ensure all of this work doesn’t go unnoticed.” The campaign begins with a 60-second commercial that was launched on the company’s YouTube channel this week and will air during halftime of the Canadian broadcast of the big foot-

ball game on February 1. Complementing the video posting online is a posting to the company’s blog which further explains the H-Factor positioning. The advertising frames the company’s unique place in the market by defining its global “Modern Premium” brand positioning for Canadians. The term “HFactor” is used as a creative expression of the company’s drive to deliver customer experiences that exceed expectations. This is achieved through vehicle design, advanced engineering, delivering award-winning quality, and developing cuttingedge safety and convenience systems. It also extends to the dealership environment and the sales and service experience. “That smile that

Guillaume displays is the natural human response Hyundai is striving to achieve by implementing H-Factor across all levels of our business,” concluded Romano. Following the initial launch on the Big Game, the TV commercial will air in both 60-second and 30-second variations on the Canadian broadcast of the Grammy Awards show, the Academy Awards show, and run on prime time television. It will be complemented with an online campaign and will begin influencing the company’s print advertising creative. The creative, development, and media buying of the campaign were managed by the company’s agency of record, Innocean Worldwide Canada.

Ford Focus RS performance hatchback coming to Canada Ford revealed its new thirdgeneration 2016 Focus RS hatchback on February 3 and when it goes on sale late this year, the car will be the first RS ever to be made available in Canada. The German-built Focus RS is one of a dozen new global performance vehicles – cars to be sold around the world with only minor tweaks between versions sold in different markets – that the automaker will launch between now and 2020, Ford

says. The Focus RS boasts a 315horsepower 2.3-litre EcoBoost

four-cylinder, the most powerful engine fitted to a Focus, and will come with all-wheel-drive

with Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control to dramatically improve handling. The 2016 Ford Focus RS will begin production later this year and hit global markets shortly thereafter. Pricing details have not yet been made available, but the MSRP should be somewhere north of the Focus ST’s $27,499 price tag.

Pakistan blocks over two million unverified SIM cards Islamabad (IANS): Over two million mobile SIM cards have been blocked across Pakistan, a media report said Friday. The cards have been blocked under a campaign launched by the government for verification of mobile phone subscribers' details , Dawn online reported. Earlier this month, the government gave Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) 91 days to verify 103 mil-

lion SIM cards issued before August 2013 but not verified through the Biometric Verification System (BVS). Since the exercise began Jan 12 this year, PTA has re-verified

8.72 million subscribers. The three-month period to verify mobile phone connections through the BVS expires April 13. "Three months is not realistic time for such an uphill task but such are the directions from the interior ministry," PTA chairman Syed Ismail Shah said. According to earlier schedule, the process of verification was to be completed in a year. "But it is now necessary after

the terror attack at a school in Peshawar Dec 16, 2014," Shah said. SIMs not verified within the 91 days, would be blocked, the PTA chairman said. The PTA chairman defended the mobile companies and said that they would suffer significant losses by blocking unverified SIMs and they had spent money on installing the verification system.

Under a system introduced Jan 2009, subscribers had to respond to two 'confidential' questions mother's name and place of birth - for activation of SIM cards. The system worked fine till January 2013, when voters' list was made public for that year's elections. The list included answers to the confidential questions and resulted in SIM activation.

Fresh polio cases reported in Pakistan Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan's National Institute of Health (NIH) detected three new polio cases, taking the number detected in 2015 to six, a media report said Saturday. The first cases of the new year were reported from

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Dawn online reported. A health ministry official said that the new cases were reported from Nowshera, South Waziristan and Sindh.

"In all three cases, the patients were infected with the P1 virus, which can be transmitted directly from child to child," he said. In 2014, Pakistan reported as many as 305 polio cases, breaking its own 16-year-old

record. Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world where polio remains endemic but efforts to eradicate the disease have been severely hindered in recent years as militants continue to attack immunisation

teams and polio workers. Polio cases in Pakistan reached a low of 28 in 2005 but rose to 198 in 2011. In 2012, it dipped again to 58 cases and 93 were recorded in 2013, as reported by End Polio Pakistan.

Pakistan tests self-developed Two convicted for terror hanged in Pakistan cruise missile Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Monday conducted a successful flight test of the indigenously developed air launched cruise missile (ALCM), an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said. The Ra’ad missile, with a range of 350 km, enables Pakistan to achieve "strategic standoff capability" on both land and sea, Dawn online reported. Cruise technology is extremely complex and has

been developed by only a few countries in the world, the statement said. The state-of-the-art Ra’ad cruise missile with stealth capabilities is a low altitude, terrain hugging missile with high manoeuvreability, and can deliver nuclear and conventional warheads with pinpoint accuracy, it added. The Director General of Strategic Plans Division, Lt.Gen. Zubair Mahmood Hayat termed it a major step towards strengthening

Pakistan’s full spectrum credible minimum deterrence capability. Pakistan’s strategic pursuits were aimed at achieving strategic stability in the region, he said. The successful launch has been commended by President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who have congratulated the scientists and engineers on their outstanding achievement.

GET CAPTURED BY CHANDRA

Islamabad (IANS): Two convicted terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-eJhangvi were hanged Tuesday in Pakistan, a media report said. The hangings took place in Karachi's central jail, Dawn online reported. The two militants Attaullah and Mohammad Azam - were sentenced to death in July 2004 by an anti-terrorism court on charges

of killing Ali Raza Peerani on sectarian grounds in June 2001 in Karachi. The convicts' appeals against the capital punishment were turned down by the Sindh High Court and later the Supreme Court of Pakistan. President Mamnoon Hussain also dismissed their mercy petitions. Black warrants for their execution were issued Jan 24.

On Monday, an application of the condemned prisoners seeking suspension of their death warrants was also dismissed. The government lifted the moratorium on hanging Dec 17, 2014 in the wake of the Peshawar school carnage Dec 16 in which 141 people, mostly school children, were killed.

2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid SUV

Nissan recently announced Canadian pricing for the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, which will go on sale at Nissan dealers across Canada in December. The new Pathfinder Hybrid joins the Pathfinder 3.5-litre model in the expanded 2014 lineup, bringing the available model configurations to eight – allowing buyers to select the perfect combination of powertrain, 4-wheel or 2-wheel drive, features and equipment to fit their family needs and budget. The Pathfinder Hybrid starts with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price* (MSRP) of $39,248 CDN for the SV 4WD Hybrid model, versus a starting price of $35,248 CDN for a comparably equipped SV 4WD 3.5litre V6 model. At the heart of the new 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid is a supercharged 2.5-litre gasoline engine and an electric

motor paired to a compact Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. The Li-ion battery fits under the 3rd row seat so there is no compromise of passenger seating capacity, 2nd or 3rd row legroom or cargo space. The hybrid system uses a Nissan Intelligent Dual Clutch System (one motor / two clutch parallel system) that efficiently manages power from both the electric motor and the gas engine. The 15 kW electric motor and gas engine work in tandem to provide performance equivalent to the Pathfinder 3.5-litre gasoline V6 model. The system is rated at 250 net horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque – versus the 3.5-litre V6 ratings of 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy for the new Pathfinder Hybrid is rated at 7.4 L/100 km combined an increase of 22 percent over the standard Pathfinder. City fuel economy is 7.8 L/100

km, while highway mileage is rated at 7.1 L/100 km. With the Pathfinder Hybrid’s large 73-litre fuel tank, the same as 3.5-litre V6-equipped models, driving range is estimated at more than 1,000 kilometres. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices* (MSRP) for the

2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid include: Pathfinder SV 4WD Hybrid $39,248 CAD, Pathfinder Platinum (with Premium Package) 4WD Hybrid $49,198 CAD (Freight & PDE: $1,560.) The new Pathfinder Hybrid also uses an advanced, nextgeneration Xtronic CVT®

(Continuously Variable Transmission) and features regenerative braking to automatically recharge the battery during braking by converting the vehicle’s kinetic energy otherwise lost in braking. Like the conventional models, it is also the only vehicle in class*** with

selectable 2WD, Auto or 4WD Lock modes from the available intuitive ALL-MODE 4x4-i system. Standard towing rating for the adventureready Pathfinder Hybrid is 1,580 kilos / 3,500 pounds (when properly equipped). Visually the Pathfinder Hybrid is marked by exclusive, efficient LED taillights and Nissan PUREDRIVE® Hybrid badges. In addition, special hybrid system information screens are added to the instrument panel’s Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display. The customizable, easy-to-read 4.2-inch color monitor can show power output readings from the electric motor and gas engine, along with how much power is being regenerated back into the battery. In addition to the new Pathfinder Hybrid, Pathfinder is available in four 3.5-litre V6 models: S, SV, SL and Platinum.

Licensed BC Car Dealerships can now be identified

The Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia (VSA) say there has been uptake as British Columbia motor dealers are displaying license decals on their storefronts. The decal identifies that dealerships have met licensing requirements and that consumers will have additional protections dealing with these dealers under B.C. law. The decal is yet another step in helping consumers recognize the important differences between licensed dealers and curbers (unlicensed dealers). Unlike licensed dealers, who are required to disclose the history and condition of a

vehicle, curbers often do not. And if they do, they may lie or misrepresent the history of the vehicle. Curbers do not offer the right to pursue recourse through the VSA if concerns about unpaid liens, undisclosed damage or improper practices arise. Nor do they contribute to the Motor Dealer Customer Compensation Fund, which has provided $2.9 million in compensation to over 600 consumers since 1995. Furthermore, if a licensed dealer is found to have engaged in misrepresentations during a transaction, the Registrar can order administrative penalties, consumer

restitution, and in some cases, the cancellation of their license. The BC Supreme Court recently upheld two Registrar’s decisions in two recently released judicial reviews. Hong Wong, Manager of Licensing at the VSA, reveals that licensed dealers are enthusiastic about the implementation of the new decal. “Dealers take pride in being licensed and believe that the decal is a great way to let the public know it is a regulated industry. Consumers deserve to be confident in the licensed vehicle sales industry,” says Wong. Ian Christman, the Registrar of

Motor Dealers, confirms that consumer confidence in the industry is improving. According to a 2013 IPSOS survey, 67% of recent buyers gave the industry a positive rating (seven or above on a ten point scale). Recent buyers were also more confident – and gave higher ratings - than those who purchased two to five years ago. Other positive trends confirm that more buyers are now receiving mechanical inspection reports and vehicle history reports without asking. Consumers are encouraged to look for the decal – about the size of a typical storefront credit card decal – on or near the front door of

a dealership. Large dealerships have also begun requesting decals for other doors. About the VSA: The Vehicle Sales Authority (VSA) is a delegated authority with the mandate to license all motor vehicle dealerships and salespeople in British Columbia. It has authority to administer and enforce the Motor Dealer Act, portions of the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act and related regulations. The VSA also offers consumer assistance and dispute resolution. Information and tips can be found at www.mvsabc.com.
