New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday has asked health officials to ensure necessary treatment and adequate medicines for swine flu patients while affected states have been offered central assistance even as the death toll due to the disease reached 703. A high-level meeting, chaired by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth, was convened here to review the situation and address issues like shortage of drugs. The meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) was attended by chief secretaries and medical heads of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. The cabinet secretary offered them necessary central assistance. Seth told media after the meeting that the prime minister has given instructions to ensure that medicines are available and patients get necessary treatment. He said that quite a few of the deaths happened because the treatment was

The health officials of various states informed the cabinet secretary through video-conferencing about the availability of drugs, testing kits, diagnostic labs, personal protective equipment (PPE) and masks. Maharashtra and Haryana have requested for some medicines to augment their emergency stock which are being supplied to them by the union health ministry, an official release said here. The cabinet secretary stressed that the states should ensure that the outbreak monitoring cells and necessary helplines function round-the-clock. The drug controllers should ensure availability of necessary medicines such as tablets, capsules and vaccines along with guidelines for vaccination and treatment protocol. "Medicines are there to treat swine flu, there is no need to panic," Seth said. Meanwhile, the number of deaths due to the disease reached 703 and the total number of cases across the
country climbed up to 11,071. Thirty-two deaths were reported Thursday. The government had Wednesday issued directives for health workers to be va c c i n a te d a c ro s s t h e country. In Delhi a total of 1,917 cases have been reported. The government has added two more designated laboratories to test for the disease and said the stock of medicines has been doubled. The death toll due to the disease has reached 90 in Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan recorded 183 deaths and 3,302 positive cases till We d n e s d a y, H i m a c h a l Pradesh saw two deaths while the toll in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh is at least 45. A police official in Jammu and Kashmir died of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) Thursday and doctors are awaiting confirmation whether he died of swine flu and 84 H1N1 cases have been confirmed in the state. West Bengal has recorded two deaths and 31 positive cases of swine flu, while a girl in Nagaland has tested positive for the virus.

Kejriwal promises corruption-free Delhi, end of ‘VIP culture’ New Delhi (IANS): Sounding more mature and pragmatic in his second innings, AAP leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Saturday pledged to make Delhi India’s first corruption-free city and end “VIP culture” even as he warned his colleagues against “arrogance” after his party’s thumping election win. Addressing some 100,000 cheering supporters at the Ramlila Maidan after being sworn in, Kejriwal, 46, also sought the status of a full state for Delhi, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi had too many issues to take care of and Delhi must be left to Delhiites. And the Aam Aadmi Party leader — sporting his party’s white cap with the words “Main hoon aam aadmi” (I am a common man) — reached out to his vanquished rivals, Kiran Bedi of the BJP and Ajay Maken of the Congress, saying he would consult both on how to develop Delhi. He called Bedi his “elder sister”. A few hours later, Kejriwal – sounding and looking unwell – drove to the Delhi Secretariat. He came to the venue after taking Crocin. In a first of its kind in the country, the AAP announced that Kejriwal will not hold any portfolio but only oversee the work of ministers and legislators.
The decision makes his long-time confidant Manish Sisodia, 43, the most powerful minister. “After our (earlier) 49 days in office, we have the confidence that we will finish off corruption in Delhi,” the 46-year-old Kejriwal said to loud cheers at the ground. “We have to make Delhi the first corruption-free city in India. We can do it.” And repeating the lines from his Ramlila Maidan speech of 2013, Kejriwal urged people to covertly record on their mobile phones demands for bribes by officials and send the recording to him. “We will take the strictest action,” he said, triggering another approving roar. Kejriwal said a Helpline number he had announced in his first stint would be restarted — for people to complain about corruption. His government would also pass the Jan Lokpal bill. It was a sea of caps at the sprawling ground in the heart of the capital. Hundreds who couldn’t
get in packed the roads as well as balconies and rooftops of nearby buildings. There was unending slogan shouting. People came not only from Delhi but other states too. The huge gathering went wild as Kejriwal took the oath of office from Lt Governor Najeeb Jung — followed by six ministers — and then spoke in Hindi. Besides Sisodia, the deputy chief minister, the other ministers are Satyendra Jain, Sandeep Kumar, Gopal Rai, Asim Ahmed Khan and Jitendra Singh Tomar. Speaking from his heart, Kejriwal admitted that the AAP’s decision to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha election — he himself took on Modi in Varanasi and lost — was a blunder. He urged his ministers, legislators and AAP colleagues never to show arrogance saying this had derailed the Congress and the BJP. “If arrogance creeps in, we will not be able to fulfil our mission.” The AAP won 67 of the
70 seats, leaving three to the BJP. “I know people of Delhi love us. But I didn’t know they love us so much.” Calling the result a “miracle”, he said God was trying to convey a message. “We have to understand the message.” Like last time, Kejriwal announced a ban on what he called VIP culture, including red beacon lights on official vehicles and strutting around in public places with a phalanx of security. He said Indians wanted a society where political leaders would also travel in buses like in many European countries. The former income tax officer and a Magsaysay award winner decried statements by AAP colleagues that after the Delhi victory, the party would expand to other
states. This, he said, smacked of arrogance. “God has ordered us, the people of Delhi have ordered us to serve them… All the coming five years I will serve only the people of Delhi.” He said he told Modi that the AAP stood for “constructive cooperation” with the central government, and it was time the capital Delhi was granted full statehood. “As prime minister, he is very busy. He has to think about the country, he has to go abroad… Please leave Delhi to the people of Delhi… I am confident Modi will think about this positively.” He said that although Delhi Police didn’t come under his control, his government would make Delhi a secure city for people of all religions and
communities. Referring to the HinduMuslim riots in east Delhi and the recent attacks on churches and Christian institutions, Kejriwal said Delhi had never seen troubles of this sort for 35 long years. “People of Delhi want peace. They won’t tolerate this.” He ended his 30-minute address by singing a song on brotherhood and communal amity, which he asked the crowd to sing with him, demonstrating yet again how this unusual and in some ways maverick stood out from the rest of the political flock. Shortly after the speech, the AAP government said that its focus would be on curbing corruption, controlling price rise, and providing uninterrupted power and water.

Government not serious enough on black money: Jethmalani New Delhi (IANS): Former law minister and veteran lawyer Ram Jethmalani Thursday said the central government was not "serious enough" on the issue of bringing back the black money stashed abroad. At a 'Meet the Press' programme, the lawyer said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was "quite serious" about the issue but questioned his team. "I have no doubt on the prime minister," he said, adding that he had no faith on some of the people of his
team. "There are only two ways that the government can get the money back - one is the German-French way, where the countries mentioned bribed the banks concerned to get the names of defaulters, and the second is by arresting the high officials of the banks involved as the US did in getting the names declared by them. "The people concerned are not serious enough. Everything is in a mess (as far as bringing
black money back is concerned)", he said. He, however, said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) was doing a good job in
probing the matter. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy said he was hopeful that the black money would be brought back home. "I agree there has been delay on the issue but I am hopeful as his government and party are working on the issue," he said. "I am not a pessimist as Jethmalani is on the matter and I hope, with work on, we will be able to solve the issue for sure."
However, both agreed on a point that black money was dangerous for India's economic health. "It's a cancer for the country's economy," Swamy said with Jethmalani echoing the same sentiment on the point. Jethmalani also accused former prime minister Manmohan Singh and his finance minister P. Chidambaram of being involved in "illegal" financial activities.
Religion should be personal choice: Naidu New Delhi (IANS): Clearing the government's position on the controversial 'ghar wapsi' events organised by various Hindu groups, Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Thursday said "if religion conversion is wrong, than re-conversion is also wrong". In an interview to HeadLines Today channel, the minister
said 'ghar wapsi' programmes by various organisations might have angered people, but the central government was not responsible for those programmes as the state governments concerned must take care if there was any problem. "If people convert on their own, than it's alright," he said. Naidu also said there was no
proposal by the government to bring in an anti-conversion law. He accused some parties of playing vote-bank politics on the issue. Asked whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi was late in reassuring the Christian community on the issue of attacks on churches and other institutions, Naidu said the prime
minister was not expected to speak every time something somewhere goes wrong. "There are authorities, ministers who have been addressing the issues concerned. Why would he (Modi) speak on everything," he asked, adding that the attacks on churches were already condemned by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Modi's suit auction shameful, damage-control exercise: Congress New Delhi (IANS): Terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's suit auction as a "shameful exercise", the Congress Wednesday said it was actually a damagecontrol exercise. "When Modi goes meeting US President Barack Obama, wearing an expensive suit with his name all over it - what does that
mean," senior Congress leader Ajay Maken asked at a press conference here, adding that it was criticised not only in India but abroad too. "This is a damage control exercise they are busy with now," he said. He also expressed "concern" on how "the image of the Indian

And then, if it had gone beyond the prescribed limit of Rs.5,000 he should have contributed for the rest of the cost, as he cannot take anything from people exceeding that amount,"
Maken said. "Had somebody else been involved in it, the CBI would have been after him but in this case Modi is involved (in accepting an expensive gift) so nothing is being done," said the Congress leader, who was chief ministerial candidate in the recent Delhi assembly election but lost.

Haryana minister's twitter Pakistani boat: Government in twist over Coast Guard handle creates buzz Chandigarh (IANS): "Thank You Chief Minister For Taking Keen Interest into My Departments. I am Relaxed." This tweet by Haryana's outspoken Health and Sports Minister Anil Vij Monday created quite a buzz in ruling circles. Not the one to mince his words on any matter, Vij did not hold back this time either. Clearly upset at Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar showing "interest" in departments handled by Vij, the minister resorted to his twitter handle Monday to get back. Khattar had Sunday launched the state government's "Khelega HaryanaBadega Haryana" campaign at Moti Lal Nehru Sports School, Rai, in Sonipat district. Vij was conspicuous by his absence at the event. Khattar even participated in a symbolic marathon run with Vij being nowhere in sight. In recent weeks, Khattar has dealt with issues related to the health department directly without taking Vij into confidence. Vij, who emerged as the most popular among all Haryana ministers in a recent survey done by a vernacular daily - singlehandedly scoring as many votes as all other ministers got jointly - has been trying hard to streamline the
functioning of the state's health department. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Khattar, assumed office Oct 26 last year. This is the first BJP government in Haryana since its creation Nov 1, 1966. Vij, a veteran and wellknown BJP leader who represents the Ambala assembly seat, was one of the top contenders for the chief minister's post. However, the BJP chose Khattar, a first-time legislator and former Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) ideologue. This upset Vij and at least three other senior BJP leaders who were aspiring to be the chief ministers. All are now ministers in the Khattar government. When the Khattar government completed 100 days recently, Vij tweeted: "Kuch log mujhe muhe mere kaam karne ke tareke se rokna chahate hain, parantu veh kabhi kamyaab nahin honge. Main apne tareke se he kaam karta rahoonga." (Some people are hell bent on stopping me from working my way but they will not succeed. I will continue to work my way). Vij did not stop at this alone. In another tweet later, he said: "There are many obstacles in politics in
every step. I have not named anyone (regarding stopping him from doing his work). I had just expressed my resolve to work to mark the 100 days of the (Khattar) government. I will crush all such obstacles and move on." This tweet caused embarrassment to the Khattar government. Last week, the chief minister landed up at Vij's residence in Ambala city and had dinner with him. Taking a dig, without referring to anyone, at his own government, Vij, in another tweet, said that he was not in politics to push the cart of the Congress party. This was linked to his being upset that the BJP government was following too many policies of the previous Congress government in Haryana. After the BJP's debacle in the recent Delhi assembly polls, Vij tweeted: "If instead of importing leaders (from other parties), the BJP had concentrated on its promoting its own leadership in Delhi, the party would not have faced this situation in Delhi." Taking a potshot at the Delhi loss in relation to BJP's win in Haryana last year, Vij tweeted: "Winning an election is not a big thing. Sustaining the victory is a bigger thing."

officer's remarks
Bengaluru / Ahmedabad (IANS): The NDA government Wednesday found itself in a spot over a senior Coast Guard official's remarks disputing its stand that a Pakistani vessel trying to sneak into India had blown itself up. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said he would inquire into the matter while indicating possible disciplinary action against the officer. He also said the government "stands by its statement" that the boat was blown up by the "suspected terrorists" themselves and was prepared to release evidence to this effect. Coast Guard Deputy Inspector General (DIG) B.K. Loshali had sparked off controversy with his remarks - captured on video - that he ordered a Pakistani boat allegedly trying to sneak into Indian waters be blown up. Sources said that within hours of Parrikar's statement, the Coast Guard issued a show cause notice to Loshali, who apparently said in Surat Monday: "Let me tell you. I hope you remember 31st December night. We blew off that Pakistan boat. We have blown them off. I was there at Gandhinagar and I told at night, blow the boat off. We don't
want to serve them biryani." These remarks were aired by television channels minutes after the defence minister was asked about the Indian Express story Wednesday about the officer. Later, in the day when Parrikar was speaking on the matter, the Express put up a video on its website of Loshali speaking at the launch of an interceptor boat in Surat. But in a u-turn, Loshali, who is chief of staff of the Coast Guard's northwest region, denied making the comments. Facing a volley of questions on Loshali's remarks, Parrikar said: "I will make inquiry. Take the video copy. We will take action against the person if he made the statement." "If someone makes a statement which is incorrect, you are making a case of disciplinary proceedings," he told reporters at the Aero India 2015 show that was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru. "You have to understand my position. There are 1516 lakh service personnel, if someone makes a statement which is factually incorrect I will take action after inquiring into it." Parrikar also asserted
that the ministry "stands to what it had stated". The minister had said in January that occupants of the vessel were "suspected terrorists" and did not appear to be smugglers. He said that those aboard decided to blow themselves up instead of surrendering. The suspicious boat was intercepted by the Coast Guard based on an intelligence input Dec 31, after it was traced in the Arabian Sea, 365 km off Porbandar in Gujarat. The dramatic incident was a reminder of the manner Pakistani terrorists sneaked into Mumbai in 2008. The vessel, which had set off from near Karachi on New Year's Eve, turned into a ball of fire and sank after its occupants, believed to be four in number, apparently set fire to it early Jan 1. The defence minister's statement came just hours after Loshali refuted the media reports. Addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad, Loshali said media reports quoting him as saying that he ordered that the suspected boat be blown up were wrong and not factual. "The operation was not handled by me. I was not fully privy to it," he maintained.

Court can't intrude into legislature's domain, says SC New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Wednesday said it was for elected representatives to take a call at what stage of proceedings a person facing criminal charges should be barred from contesting elections and the courts could not issue directions to the legislature and intrude in its domain. A bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Arun Mishra said this as senior counsel Rakesh Dwivedi appearing for NGO Public Interest Foundation contended that a person against whom criminal charges have been framed by the court should be
debarred from contesting elections. "This is for the representatives of the people to decide. We can't issue directions to legislature. They know how to run the country in a democratic manner," Chief Justice Dattu observed as Dwivedi pressed the plea that the framing of charges should be stage where a person facing criminal trial should be barred from contesting elections. He said that this was also a stage where there was a judicial application of mind by the court before framing the charges. "We should not be stepping into an area" earmarked for the
legislature, the court said asking if it could issue direction to the parliament to legislate on barring the people against whom criminal charges have been framed. "In the name of judicial activism we can't step in the arena earmarked for the law makers and legislature. Lines are marked demarcating the roles (of three organs of state)," the court said as the NGO urged the court to take recourse to its power under the constitution to issue direction to the Election Commission to bar people charged with criminal offences from contesting elections. "Your submissions on the first
thought look very very attractive. What a noble thought is this. But after a deeper consideration, no," Chief Justice Dattu said, adding: "We are bound by the decision of the constitution bench" which bars court's from issuing directions to legislature. As Dwivedi pressed his plea, the court asked him: "What is the medium you want us to adopt... What you expect this court to do, tell us in nutshell." Dwivedi told the court that it should direct the poll panel to reject the nomination papers of a candidate against whom charges have been framed and also ask the central government to con-
sider the issue seriously. At this, the court said: "It is not for us to say what is good governance. It is for them to see. It is not for us to advise the government what to do or not to do... It is left to them why a person with criminal antecedents is not to be made a minister." Appearing for the central government, Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh told the court that disqualifications are mentioned in the Representation of People Act and court should not interfere with it and rewrite the law. "You can't add further disqualifications," he told the court.
Modi 'name-striped suit' steals the show at Gujarat auction
Surat (Gujarat) (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's famous 'name-striped' jacket stole the show at the three-day charity auction that began here Wednesday, with a businessman bidding around Rs.1.21 crore for the attire. Sported by Modi when US President Barack Obama visited India in January, the suit was among the 450 items that went under the hammer Wednesday, evoking huge enthusiasm among people. A local BJP leader Raju Agarwal set the ball rolling at the auction with a Rs.51 lakh bid. But he was soon overtaken by diamond merchant Suresh Aggrawal who made a bid of one crore rupees for the special suit which hogged the headlines even in the foreign media in January.
Soon, Aggrawal was shunted behind by an NRI Viral Choksi, who raised the bid to Rs.1.21 crore for the suit which is to be finally declared "sold" Friday when the auction ends. The suit, which drew global attention, has been designed by Ahmedabad designer Ramesh Kumar of Jade Blue, Modi's regular tailor, and it had the name 'Narendra Damodardas Modi' woven into it in glittering gold letters. The suit kicked up a political row with opposition parties accusing the prime minister of indulging in 'narcissism' and questioned how a person with such humble beginnings could afford the expensive suit, reportedly costing around one million rupees. At the auction on Wednesday, the

Hindu temple vandalized in Washington State (IANS): In the latest attack targeting Hindus places of worship, a temple in Washington State was vandalized on the eve of its planned celebration of Maha Shivaratri, according to media reports. When members of the Hindu Temple Cultural Center in Bothell, 36 km from Seattle, went there on Sunday they found a swastika painted on it and “Get Out” scrawled in large letters with spray paint. In the US, white supremacists have adopted the Nazi swastika as an ideological symbol. KING 5 TV, an NBC
affiliated station in Seattle, said, “In Hinduism, swastikas signified peace long before it became a Nazi symbol. In this case, temple leaders say it’s now being used not just to hurt their believers but a neighborhood.” The Bothell temple incident comes ten days after President Barack Obama criticised India at an inter-religious prayer meeting saying intolerance there “would have shocked Gandhiji.” “I was paranoid to say the truth, this just doesn’t look right to me,” temple member
Jay Araman told Seattle’s KIRO TV, a CBS affiliate. “He fears the red graffiti, sprawled across the outside of the temple, could be a sign that someone is planning something violent,” the station added. Echoing the fears, Thampipillai Thilakarjah told Q13 Fox TV station that his 11year-old son was scared to visit the temple. The Bothell Reporter newspaper reported that the incident was under investigation but no suspect has yet been identified according to Shari L. Ireton, a spokesperson for
Snohomish County Sheriff. “The timing of this crime, occurring before a major Hindu festival, warrants special attention from law enforcement,” said Jay Kansara, Hindu American Foundation’s Director of Government Relations. “We are encouraged by the ongoing thorough investigation of the Bothell City Police Department.” There has been a spate of anti-Hindu across the US in recent months. In August a murti of Shiva at the Vishwa Bhavan Hindu Mandir in
Georgia state was desecrated with black paint. The phone lines of the temple in Monroe, near Georgia, were cut and graffiti with hate messages were written on it. The local sheriff’s office arrested two people in connection with the attack. Between July and October in Loudon County in Virginia, police documented 17 separate incidents of anti-Hindu vandalism, HAF said. In response to these attacks, the US Justice Department has mandated the inclusion of anti-Hindu
hate crimes as a category in crime-reporting forms starting in January. In an incident involving an Indian, but not directly linked to his religion, 57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel was attacked by a police officer in Madison in Alabama state and left partially paralysed. The officer was dismissed from the police force. In Bothell, a governmentrun school was also defaced with a swastika and the words, “Muslims Get Out,” according to Q13 Fox.
Indian-American surgeon on a mission to save lives on Indian roads Washington (IANS): An Indian-American surgeon is on a mission to save thousands of lives that are lost on Indian roads every day with an innovative training programme for trauma first responders using a $200,000 simulator dummy. Rajasthan University educated surgeon Dr. Dinesh Vyas, an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University since 2011, estimates that the number of road deaths in India would in 10 years swell four times from current 1,000 a day. “It’s a shameful figure for me as a physician,” he told IANS in an email interview outlining his strategy that could easily save at least half of the road accident victims, most of whom are sole earning members of their families. “I can change the trauma situation with my existing team of 40 US surgeons and 50 Indian faculty members in the next four years,” said Vyas. He visits India four times a year to build up collabora-
tion across the country to make it a self-sustaining process. Most of Vyas’s team is made up of surgeons and researchers of Indian origin settled in the US and the UK. They have also formed an Indian American Surgeons Association with close to 1,000 members many of whom are interested in the cause of trauma care. His team is also in touch with state governments in several states including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Telangana, 15 medical schools and NITI Ayog to extend the programme across India. “We plan to start at least
50 centres across India each costing $700,000 with roughly two centres in every state,” said Vyas whose team has trained more than 400 people in the last four months. “We add at least 100 every month from our three centres – AIIMS, Jodhpur, Dr. S. N. medical College, Jodhpur, MG Medical University, Jaipur.” Starting cost of the programme is at least $20,000. “Most of it is borne by me and the host institute bears some cost of logistics,” Vyas said. “We take the simulators on loan at this point from the company at a subsidised rate to keep cost down for the initial phase.”

Some leading corporate houses have also shown interest in the project, he said. His team is also trying to raise money through the CSR funds of foundations interested in Indian road safety or health needs. “It gives a unique opportunity to NRI academic surgeons to pull together, central and state governments, with various private and government medical schools contributing and building a system for trauma care,” he said. “Our research team has improvised the programme over the last 7-8 years with more than 20 visits to India and other countries to design the programme and curriculum,” said Vyas.
The programmes are largely conducted in native language with sophisticated simulator dummies and other equipment and educational videos followed by question- answer and video debriefing sessions to enable all trainees to learn from their and others’ mistakes. Another key feature is that it’s a “Trainer-Trainee programme: meaning we train both trainers and trainees during our visit and observe local trainers educate more trainees,” Vyas said. “This helps us to identify the most involved, thoughtful, articulate and critical trainers to run and build a sustainable, high quality, motivated programme,” he
said. Later, the team stays engaged with the local trainers providing support through video conferences. In addition, a pioneer free multi-lingual Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for first responders has been designed to reach out to millions of students in all Indian languages through the internet using edcast.com . Run by a faculty of all dialect speakers from India recruited with the help of the Asian Studies Centre at Michigan State University, “This programme will train and educate people who cannot join the training centres we are starting in India,” Vyas said.

Arun Jaitley to launch Rs. 690-million heritage project Chandigarh: Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, along with Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, will soon visit Amritsar to launch the Rs 69-crore [Rs. 690-million] heritage project. They will also decide whether Tarn Taran district could be included in the project. Punjab’s Local Bodies Minister and BJP leader Anil Joshi wants Tarn Taran district included in the project. "We have received the grant for the project," said Joshi. While central grants to the state have not flowed as expected after the BJP-led NDA government took over, the state Local Bodies Department received the special grant for the Holy City a few days ago. Earlier, Jaitley had objected to the waiver of militancy period-related debt on Punjab, delayed three instalments of cash credit limits, refused to stand guarantee for the Rs 300-
crore solar energy loan from the Asian Development Bank. He agreed to waive only Rs 300 crore out of Rs 700 pending interest under various schemes of the 13th Finance Commission. The demand of including Tarn Taran is important in the wake of the battle for political one-upmanship in the district, which has caused acrimony between the coalition partners — the SAD and BJP. The alliance reached a breaking
point after a group of Akali leaders and workers allegedly shot at Raja Joshi, brother of Anil Joshi, in Tarn Taran. Tarn Taran, which earlier was part of Amritsar district, has several religious sites associated with the Sikh Gurus. Joshi said various religious sites associated with the Sikh Gurus, especially the fifth, Guru Arjun Dev who founded the city and later moved to Amritsar, would be developed. “We are pitching for a tourism circuit which will begin from Amritsar and take devotees through religious sites in Tarn Taran. This will generate employment for locals,” he said. He said Tarn Taran also has sites that are important from a point of view of war history. Assal Uttar and Bhikhiwind had witnessed the Army’s capture of several Pakistani Patton tanks. The area was called Patton Nagar for a while, which can be re-created under the
Punjab sets up Bureau of Agriculture Promotion Chandigarh (IANS) Having been at the forefront of the 'Green Revolution' in the agriculture sector in the 1960s, Punjab has now got a Bureau of Agriculture Promotion. The agrarian state has set up the bureau to provide a single window system to farmers for the development of agriculture. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has given
his approval to constitute the Bureau of Agriculture Promotion (BAP). Badal approved the setting up of the bureau on the lines of the Bureau of Investment Promotion to give a push to the farming sector in the state. This bureau would provide all the facilities to farmers under a single roof for developing agriculture as a more remunerative profession. It

Taran in the heritage project. Officials in the Local Bodies Department said that the project would include maintaining the heritage sites and buildings including the Golden Temple, besides upkeep of Amritsar’s infrastructure, cleanliness and roads. Everything would be developed to make it a “perfect heritage city”. The second phase of the project will include projection of the traditional cuisines, arts and crafts of the city, for which dedicated streets would be developed. The project will lay emphasis on better marketing of the cuisine. The narrow and congested streets will also be maintained. In addition, Amritsar’s phulkari, 'galeecha' (carpets), silver jewellery and other products, engraved metal products like brass doors, 'kalash' (vessel) will also be preserved and sold at various outlets. project, said Joshi. “My department is surveying the district to prepare a detailed project report for the inclusion of Tarn Taran in the heritage project,” said Joshi. Jaitley, who lost the parliamentary election from Amritsar to Congress' Capt Amarinder Singh, Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, wants to launch the project as he had promised heritage status to the city during elections. Amritsar was one of the 12 heritage cities, including Varanasi, of the country chosen for the project. Joshi said the special grant does not need any matching grant from the state government. “I met the Finance Minister in New Delhi recently. He will be visiting Amritsar along with Venkaiah Naidu after the civic elections on February 25,” Joshi said. He said that Jaitley and Naidu told him to prepare a detailed project report for the inclusion of Tarn
Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab Police Wednesday said that it had seized 25 kg heroin from a smuggler in Fazilka district of the state. The heroine consignment is valued at Rs.125 crore in the international market, said Inspector General of Police Jatinder Jain. The seizure was made
by the Bathinda unit of the counter intelligence wing of the police from Hasta Kalan village of Fazilka district. Police arrested smuggler Gurcharan Singh in this connection and recovered three Pakistani SIM cards, three mobile phones, a car and other things from him, a police spokesman said here.
The heroine consignment was smuggled into India with the help of Pakistani smugglers based in Lahore, police officials said. The Punjab Police had recently seized eight kg heroin from the border belt. The smugglers' gang associated had connections in Pakistan, India, Canada and Malaysia.

India make it 6-0 in World Cups against Pakistan Adelaide (IANS): India had won all their previous five matches against Pakistan in the World Cup and it was no different Sunday as the defending champions defeated their neighbours by 76 runs to take the score to 6-0. India once again came out on top in the highoctane clash to defeat Pakistan in their World Cup opener at the Adelaide Oval. A special century by vice-captain Virat Kohli (107) guided India to 300/7 which Pakistan failed to chase down. They were bowled out for 224 in 47 overs. Statistics showed that Pakistan have never chased more than 262 successfully and India have always defended a total of 300 or more in the quadrennial event. Both teams allowed the records to continue. Opting to bat, India got off to a fluent start through openers Rohit Sharma (15) and Shikhar Dhawan (73). Rohit gifted away his wicket while trying to pull a not-soshort delivery in the eighth over. However, Dhawan struck an important second-wicket 129-run partnership with Kohli which gave India the platform
to put up a big total. Dhawan looked good to score a hundred but confusion in the 30th over with Kohli resulted in him getting run out. It was the perfect opportunity for Pakistan to capitalise with India at 163 for two with 20 overs to go. However, big-hitter Suresh Raina made sure his wicket counted for India as he smashed 74 off just 56 balls. His innings, which was studded with five fours and three sixes, made Kohli take the backseat as he targeted leg-spinner Yasir Shah (0/60). Meanwhile, Kohli played the anchor's innings and applied his sublime touch to register his 22nd One-Day International (ODI) hundred, which was punctuated by eight boundaries. It was the first century by an Indian against Pakistan in a World Cup contest. Kohli was later
declared the Man-of-theMatch. "Probably one of the biggest in my career so far," said Kohli, when asked if his latest century was the best knock he has played in his career. Kohli was given reprieve twice during his innings. In the beginning, he was dropped by Yasir at long-on. The 26-yearold was again dropped by wicketkeeper Umar Akmal at 76. India were looking at getting a 330-plus total while batting at 273/2 in the 45th over when Sohail Khan (5/55) struck for Pakistan by clinching Kohli's prized wicket. His wicket led to a collapse as Raina, Ravindra Jadeja (3), skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (18) and Ajinkya Rahane (0) all perished quickly. Pakistan gave away only 27 runs in the last five overs as the 1992 edition champions clinched five wickets.
Sohail, playing in only his sixth ODI, picked up his first five-wicket haul. In reply, Pakistan looked steady at the start despite losing experienced batsman Younis Khan (6) cheaply in the fourth over. Opener Ahmed Shehzad (47) and Haris Sohail (36) were batting solidly at 79/1 in the 18th over when the latter edged one to Raina in the slips. Soon three wickets -Ahmed Shehzad, Sohaib Maqsood (0) and Umar Akmal (0) -- in the span of eight deliveries turned the match in favour of the two-time champions. Suddenly from 102/2, Pakistan were tottering at 103/5. The Pakistani lower order could not offer much of a fight and the only person in between India and their victory was captain Misbah-ulHaq (76), who scored his 39th half-century. He kept running out of partners and was eventually caught at mid-wicket in the 46th over. Pacer Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he notched up 4/35 from nine overs while spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's (1/41) brilliant spell, which included three
maidens, slowed down the Pakistani innings. Dhoni lauded the team for rising to the occasion and delivering a performance worthy of becoming the champions. "It was a very good performance," said Dhoni. "I was very happy with our batting. When you are batting first, it is not easy over here. It doesn't come on that nicely." He expressed satisfaction at the way the batsmen applied themselves. "It was important we stayed in the middle. The big partnership between Virat and Shikhar. And then Raina capitalised as well." Misbah was gracious in defeat and congratulated India for their superlative performance. "They posted a big total, and bowled really well. We lost our way with three wickets in the middle," he said. "The pitch was really good, and with the quality of their batting, 300 was a pretty good effort. If all the batsmen had batted well, it could have been achieved." India play South Africa in their next group assignment Feb 22 in Melbourne.
India aiming at 10-plus medals from Rio: Sonowal
Kolkata (IANS): India is aiming at ten-plus medals at the Rio Olympics next year, union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said here Tuesday. The country came up with its best show in the Olympic Games at London in 2012 grabbing six medals - two silver and four bronze. "This time, we are aiming at ten-plus medals," said Sonowal on the sidelines of the Eastern India CSR Summit here. The ministry has devised a Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to support athletes who are medal prospects. "We have identified seven medal prospect disciplines for the coming Olympics and identified 75 core probables. Another 75 probables will be selected shortly,'" the minister said. The disciplines are archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, weightlifting and wrestling.

1. Always use right products suited to the face. As a thumb rule use mildest facewash. Type of facewash used can var y according to skin type but look for gentle, non irritating types. Common misconception is that more the lather better is the cleaning. Rather such face washes are high on detergent content. One should try and go for milder washes preferably fragrance free to avoid allergy.
2. Use right temperature of water. Use or very cold of very hot and very cold water can either over dry skin or cause skin to look blanched. 3. Use same facewash twice daily atleast in winters and three times a day in summers followed by moisturizer. Avoid rushing out in sun immediately after washing face. Take time out to apply sunscreen. 4. Never rub your face vigorously after washing. Mop the face gently with mild towel. Also use
oilfree moisturizer in acne prone skin and creamy moisturizer in dry skin within 3 minutes after facewash. 5. Don't use Facewashes for removing makeup. Remove make up with remover or even a good moisturizer. Then wash it off with facewash. Some people like t o f o l l o w c l e a n s e r, t o n e r, moisturizer ( CTM) routine. Mon/Tues/Wed: The first half of the week finds you in your top form, striking off tasks on your to-do check list, a sense of control in your life, positive mindset and appreciation of all that is going right in your life. The best part though is all about how people perceive you and admire you for your achievements. Thursday/ Friday: As the week flows in to its second half you are all set to think and plan for your future. You are completely living in your head even as you go about doing your day to day chores. It feels good to have all planned in advance. And it all seems in good shape from where you are in your life today. Weekend: This weekend focus on doing something you enjoy and taking good care of your self.
Monday/Tuesday/ Wednesday: The first half of the week is focused on getting the maximum tasks done within the shortest possible time. And you want to make it look easy and smooth. The deeper thought would be to be ahead of the game and be comfortable while leading the rest. To others it may seem as though you can achieve so much effortlessly. Needless to mention, you get tons of admiration. Thursday/ Friday: You may need some assistance in the second half of the week. There are many who would want to follow your lead. Keep inspiring others. Weekend: You attract a lot of positive attention from others.
Mon/Tues/Wednes: You may feel the need to withdraw in your shell dear crab, as the week begins this Monday. You resist interacting with others and even if you do, there are chances of misconceptions. It may feel a bit overwhelming and draining. But you are more than capable to resist this kind of stress. Thursday/ Friday: Don't be bothered about what others think about you. Be concerned about doing what is right. You could be full of new ideas as the week rolls in to its second half . Yet all around you it is more about monetary concerns that's taking precedence over other matters. Weekend: Go easy on yourself this weekend and give your mind a free rein.
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: You may feel under the weather the beginning of the week.Yet not all that bad that cannot let you concentrate on your day to day tasks and responsibilities. Thursday/ Friday: Still do not give it much thought since it is temporary and will soon disappear as you go deeper in to the week in its second half. You can feel the positive vibes all around you as you give and receive affection. Weekend: This weekend is all about listening to others and doing what you think is right.

So take care of your current responsibilities. Thursday/ Friday: The later half of the week is more enjoyable and joyous. Enjoy the company of you pals and family. Weekend: The weekend is spent comparing what you have today versus where you want to be in future.
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: The beginning of the week is better than your expectations. You could be finalizing your voyage through air or water at this point in time. You may be able to make a point to someone who had a conflicting view about something important. Still it is important you make an effort to understand their perspective as well. Thursday/ Friday: You may face a conflict with either your buddy or some associate in the second half of the week. This could dampen your mood and spirit. Still, take it in you stride. Weekend: The stress level drops and normalcy returns.

Thurs/ Fri: Midweek , an extra effort put in to some matter that seems important could prove to be worthless at the end of the day. Take it in your stride and move on. Weekend: There may be a pressing need to arrive at some conclusion regarding a monetary matter this weekend. Give it an indepth thought or postpone it for later, if possible. You may be in a better position next week to close this matter.
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: You may need to utilize your resources of resolve, purpose and self-regulation as the week begins this Monday. Hence it is important that you make a good impression on him. Thursday/ Friday: You attract positive attention from your colleagues and associates. Midweek you feel that getting the same receptiveness from the family is a hard task and still a long way away. Domestic life is less than ideal in the second half of the week. Weekend: Weekend brings an opportunity for love.
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: In the earlier half of the week you seem to be the personality in focus. Almost all people in your circle of influence – both in your personal and professional spheres of life are looking up to you and seek your valuable input.Your popularity seems to be on an upward trend. It is all because you have the right networking contacts and know how to make good use of those important names in your diary. Thursday/ Friday: The second half of the week brings the realization that though you have a good intention of being of assistance to others, you may be neglecting yourself. Weekend: Take good care of yourself. You deserve it.
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: As the week begins you may feel that there is much more than what meets the eye. And you may feel a bit restless. Make an effort to get the hidden information out of folks around you. People may not be that forthcoming now, yet relax. It could just be a matter of time before the truth comes to the surface. Thursday/ Friday: Midweek you are required to be more receptive and accommodating rather than being rigid and closed in your mindset. You could be faced with an opinion completely contrary to that of yours. Be prepared to face it flexibly. Weekend:The end of the week will do good with use of your imaginative and creative capabilities.
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: You are about to receive some excellent motivation the first half of this brand new week starting Monday. It could be in a personal relationship or in an innovative professional venture. All that you have been doing for the last few weeks is about to fetch some great results. Weekend:The weekend may be a little fuzzy yet you enjoy it nevertheless. You may be living in your head as the week draws to a close.
Mon/Tues/Wed: Funds, income and your existing resources, all could be a matter of focus as you enter the early days of the brand new week this Monday.Your outlook towards life, work, love and relationships all seem to be affected with your current financial condition. The thing to remember here is you can have a great time even if you don't have substantial amounts of money. Thursday/ Friday: The second half of the week promises some good times – networking with people around you and it does not cost a dime...You spend quite a bit of time interacting with folks from diverse backgrounds. Weekend:This weekend do what you feel like.

'Aahat' will increase horror quotient in genre: Shakti Anand AFTER scaring viewers with his spooky antics in popular shows like "Ssshhhh...Koi Hai" and "Ssshhhh...Phir Koi Hai", Shakti Anand is all set to return to the horror genre with the new season of "Aahat". The actor says the show will take the genre a step further. The 39-year-old, who is currently essaying the role of Maharana Udai Singh in the historical drama "Bharat Ka Veer Putra - Maharana Pratap", believes that with better sound and visual effects (VFX) "Aahat" -- produced by B.P. Singh -- will scare the audience like never before. "'Aahat' has received a great
response from its previous seasons. This time we have done a different level of shooting. On execution level, there will be a lot of changes. I did 'Ssshhhh...Koi Hai' a long time ago. But now we have better techniques -- be it with sound or camera," Shakti told IANS over phone from Mumbai. "Horror is all about bass sound effects and VFX, which together can scare people. The makers have done a lot of research before getting the show back. Earlier, shows used to lack production values, but 'Aahat' will increase the horror quotient in the genre," he added.
As horror films have witnessed a backlash at the box office in recent times and the genre has declined on the small screen, Shakti feels that it's high time for makers to look to foreign cinema. Asked why Indian films and shows lack the horror element in it, Shakti said: "Earlier, people used to get scared with all those dirty masks, white sari and other tactics. But now, scaring people requires a lot of background sound and special effects.” "Although (some) horror films have flopped in recent times, it doesn't mean that producers should stop making films under this genre. Youth has started
watching horror shows now on a regular basis. They love getting those spooky and eerie feelings. "Today, we have a very healthy competition with the West. People are going to compare Indian shows to them (those in Hollywood), so we need to be up to that level." Shakti, who is married to actress Sai Deodhar, feels that if viewers are going to be served with a "good story" and "better visual effects", then the horror genre will elicit a better response. "'Aahat' saw a decline because they were showing the same kind of story and effects that we used 20 years back with
things like 'bhoot bangla', 'bangle ki rani' and 'Aatma'. Today when we see western films, and so we usually laugh at all the past things we used as scary elements," said the actor, who will be seen in the first episode of "Aahat", to be aired on Sony Entertainment Television Wednesday. The actor also points out at how the Indian moviemaker and showmaker is restricted in his ability to tell horror stories like "The Exorcist" as he also needs to cater to the rural audience. And for that, "they have to keep the storyline simple." (IANS)
'Humshakals', 'Action Jackson' lead Bhumi to keep low profile before 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' Golden Kela Awards nominations
FILMMAKER Sajid Khan's 2014 film “Humshakals” is leading the 7th Annual Golden Kela Awards with five nominations, while Prabhudheva's “Action Jackson” has bagged four nominations. The awards are an Indian version of the Golden Raspberry Awards, which take place in the US. This year, the Golden Kela Awards will honour the worst of Bollywood films released during 2014. Multi-starrer comedy film “Humshakals”, which starred Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Bipasha Basu, Ram Kapoor, Tamannaah Bhatia and Esha Gupta in pivotal roles, is nominated for Worst Film, Worst Director (Sajid Khan) and Worst Actor (Saif), as well the Most Atrocious Lyrics and the 'Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke' Award. Ajay Devgn-Sonakshi Sinha-starrer action masala film “Action Jackson” is also nominated for the Worst Film and for the Worst Director category, apart from Worst Actor and Worst Actress. Apart from “Humshakals” and “Action Jackson”, other films in the Worst Film category are Salman Khan-starrer “Kick”, Hrithik Roshan-starrer
“Bang Bang!” and Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Happy New Year”. Saif and Ajay are competing in the worst actor category against Arjun Kapoor (“Gunday” and everything else), Salman (“Kick”) and surprisingly, Rani Mukerji for her tough police officer role in “Mardaani”. In the Worst Actress category, the contenders are Katrina Kaif (“Bang Bang!”), Sonam Kapoor (for everything she did), Tamannah Bhatia (“Entertainment”), Jacqueline Fernandes (“Kick”) and Sonakshi ("Action Jackson", "Lingaa" and "Holiday"). “Humshakals” director Sajid Khan is vying for the 'Golden Kela' in the Worst Director category along with Prabhudheva (“Action Jackson”), Rohit Shetty ("Singham Returns"), Sajid Nadiadwala ("Kick"), Sohail Khan ("Jai Ho") and Siddharth Anand ("Bang Bang!"). The hit numbers of 2014 like “Sunny Sunny” (“Yaariyan”), “Yaar na miley” (“Kick”), “Baby Doll” (“Ragini MMS 2”), “Galliyan” (“Ek Villain”) and “Tu Meri” (“Bang Bang!”) have been nominated for the most irritating song which have been played endlessly on TV or
Radio. In the Most Atrocious Lyrics category, Sameer for “Caller Tune” (“Humshakals”), Shabbir Ahmed for “Ice Cream” (“The Xpose”), Yo Yo Honey Singh for “Sunny Sunny” (“Yaariyan”), Vishal Dadlani for “Tu Meri” (“Bang Bang!”) and Mayur Puri for “Johnny J o h n n y ” (“Entertainment”) have been nominated. The Worst Debutant category includes Tiger Shroff (“Heropanti”), The Xpose Girls (“The Xpose”), Mishti and Kartik Tiwari (“Kaanchi”), the whole cast and crew of "Yaariyan" and Daisy Shah ("Jai Ho"). For 'Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke Award', Raj and DK (“Happy Ending”), Abhishek Sharma (“The S h a u k e e n s ” ) , Nawazuddin Siddiqui (“Kick”), Ram Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan (“Humshakals”) and Shashanka Ghosh (“Khoobsurat”) are in competition. In quirky category RGV Ki Aag Award for the Most Pointless Remake/Sequel, the films nominated are "Shaadi Ke Side Effects", "Ragini MMS 2", "Singham Returns", "Bang Bang!", "Khoobsurat", "The Shaukeens", "Bhoothnath Returns" and "Hate Story 2". For Why Are You Still Trying Award, Sonam Kapoor, Jackie Bhagnani, Himesh Reshammiya, Subhash Ghai, Ayushman Khurana and Yami Gautam have been nominated. The 7th Annual Golden Kela Awards ceremony will take place here at the India Habitat Centre March 14. (IANS)
THERE'S a lot that went behind bringing Bhumi Pednekar from behind the scenes of filmmaking on to the big screen with "Dum Laga Ke Haisha". But her journey will be kept under wraps until the film's release. In fact, the movie's production banner Yash Raj Films (YRF) has instructed Bhumi, previously part of YRF's casting division, to refrain from talking to the media before the release of the film. Confirming the same, a spokesperson of the movie emphasised that Bhumi's journey from being behind the camera to the big screen will make more sense after her work and calibre as an actor has been showcased through the movie. "Bhumi has an endearing personal journey and story. She was assistant to Shanoo, the casting director. Everyone felt her story was better told once every one had seen on the celluloid," the spokesperson said in a statement. With a message that 'Love comes in all
sizes', the movie “"Dum Laga Ke Haisha”" also stars Ayushmann Khurrana, which narrates the journey of a couple who get married due to their family pressure and shows how they move on from finding faults in physical appearances and finding love. The trailer and songs of the film give a glimpse of the work that one can expect from Bhumi. Produced by Maneesh Sharma, the film is directed by Sharat Katariya and is slated to release Feb 27. Will make a good movie soon: Restoring films is preserving Randhir Kapoor culture: Gulzar VETERAN actor Randhir Kapoor, who has turned 68, always harboured a wish to make a "good movie". Now he says it may happen "soon". "I have always wanted to make a good movie which I will be doing hopefully soon," Randhir, the eldest son of the late iconic actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor, said in an interview to 92.7 BIG FM. In the past, Randhir has directed films including "Henna", "Dharam Karam" and "Kal Aaj Aur Kal", and his acting filmography includes movies like "Raampur Ka Lakshman", "Hamrahi"
and "Haath Ki Safai". Randhir, who married actress Babita, has two daughters -- Karisma and Kareena, both of whom are successful actors in
the Hindi film industry. He feels thankful for having a beautiful and talented family. "I'm grateful to have a lovely wife and kids like Kareena and Karisma. TheyÂ’re wonderful and IÂ’m blessed to have received the opportunity to be a father to them. "I consider (my nephew) Ranbir as my own too, and IÂ’m so proud of the success and adulation he has received in the industry. Their presence in my life is the best birthday present that I have ever received," he added. (IANS)
Radhika Apte goes deglam for 'Hunterrr' ACTRESS Radhika Apte, who has styled up with spunky bangs for her forthcoming release "Badlapur", has chosen to go deglam for her next movie "Hunterrr". While she will be seen playing an edgy character in "Badlapur", which releases Friday; "Hunterrr", which hits the screen exactly a month after the former, will see Radhika play a nonglam version of herself. Radhika was briefed during the narration that her character would sport a simple look but was in for a surprise on the first day of the shoot when she arrived to see there wasn't vanity of any kind on the sets. She
was amused to see there was no appointed hair or makeup person for her, and then her director explained the character's requirement. She was apprehensive initially, but she's happy with the result. "Any actor who is told to go de-glam obviously feels apprehensive for a quick second but I have done this before, so I was convinced sooner. I think my apprehension was that because I have done this earlier I didn't want to be typecast. "Also, given the plot of the film, I think I went in expecting something slightly glamorous. But the director was really particular
about sticking to the look. "We had to especially craft the looks in a way so as to accommodate a no hair and makeup feel to suit my character's need. Obviously everyone was being nice and tried to talk me into it. But later I realised it wasn't a typecast whatsoever and I was totally on the same wavelength as the director." "Hunterrr" itself is said to be a coming-of-age film which revolves around an unassuming sex addict and his lustful journey through life. Directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, it also stars Gulshan Devaiah. (IANS)
Mahesh Bhatt plays Shazahn's father figure in 'Siddhartha' ACTRESS Shazahn Padamsee, who is sharing screen space with Mahesh Bhatt in "Siddhartha", says the filmmaker is playing the role of her father figure in the film. Shazahn told IANS: "I'm waiting for the release of 'Siddhartha'. It's a very beautiful story. After hear-
ing the narration, anybody will fall in love with the film. "My role is set in Manali and Mahesh Bhatt is playing a role of my father figure in the film. It's very interesting to work with him as an actor." "Siddhartha" is directed by debutante Mukul Misra, and Bhatt will be seen
PRAISING Viacom18 and Film Heritage Foundation's initiative to save India's cinematic heritage, veteran writer-lyricistfilmmaker Gulzar says film restoration, which has been neglected for a long time in India, equals preservation of culture. "Handling old films, restoring them and preserving them is like preserving your culture," Gulzar said. The Film Heritage Foundation will be setting up a week-long school, focused on film preservation and restoration, starting Feb 22-28 at Films Division here. The school will consist of lectures, presentations and practical classes on film preservation and restoration that will be conducted by experts in the field. There will also be a daily screening of a restored classic preceded by an introductory talk on the restoration. This is in line with the vision to create an indigenous resource of film archivists and restorers
'Qaidi No 210' goes on floors A film on Salman Khan's involvement in the infamous blackbuck hunting case, whose verdict is expected on Feb 25, went on floors here with its 'muhurat' shot canned in Filmistan Studio Monday. The film is being is the debut of editorturned-director Prakash Jha, and stars newcomer Usmaan Khan in the lead role. It also has Salman's cellmate, Mahesh Saini, in the same role. The same Jodhpur jail and the same cell as well as the same vehicle and driver Harish Dhulani used by Salman are part of the film as well.

playing a bald Buddhist monk in the movie. Shazahn's character in the movie is called Nidhi. Talking about her role, she said: "She is a practicing Buddhist who lives in Manali. She plays a guardian angel to the protagonist of the film. She is the one who gives a new life to him." (IANS)
Director Sriram Raghavan seems fine with the cuts. "The language is commensurate with the characters' state of mind. These are not your average dinner table conversationalists. Nawazuddin (Siddiqui) is a killer. Varun (Dhawan) is a man on a rampage, and Huma Qureshi plays a prostitute," he said. (IANS)
Jha said: "The film begins with Mumbai and ends in Jodhpur. Sometimes, being human is a crime if you are celebrity. Anything you do touches headlines. We are touching upon that Salman who believes in being human." Producer Ranjeet Sharma said: "I have always had this strange fascination for Salman Khan. He is simple, unassuming and does things from his heart. The film touches upon a part of his life that only a few were privy to. And those who were part of Salman's life during this period are part of our film." (IANS)

Censors knock out swear words from 'Badlapur' THE intrinsically violent "Badlapur", which tells the tale of a man getting even with his wife's killer, has been cleared without any visual cuts. that will work towards preserving India's legacy of cinema. Gulzar has words of praise for Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder-director, Film Heritage Foundation. "I feel very proud of Shivendra for doing this for what he is doing is bigger than my filmmaking. I feel like I should have started preserving films instead of making films. I am proud of him not only because he has involved me in this, but more so, because I believe in this initiative," he said. Preserving the country's cine-
matic history is a "a mammoth task", according to Gulzar. "I feel sorry that traditionally, we Indians have been neglecting it. It hurts me to realise that films made by veterans like Bimalda (Bimal Roy), Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinalda (Mrinal Sen), films that taught us a lot, have not been restored and preserved. "It is unfortunate if the current generation or the generations to come don't have access to these films. The film veterans have made their mark, but it's a great loss for people like us or people who didn't preserve these films," he added. The Film Heritage Foundation has collaborated with Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation, Cineteca di Bologna, L'Immagine Ritrovata and FIAF for this course, which is certified by FIAF - the International Federation of Film Archives. Pre-registered participants from across India, Sri Lanka and Nepal will be part of the course. (IANS)

Pakistan, China agree on need for strategic balance Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan and China have agreed on the need for maintaining a strategic balance in South Asia, as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his 11-member delegation concluded an official visit to Islamabad. Summing up the Chinese foreign minister's visit, the Pakistani foreign ministry Saturday said this was the first official visit of Wang Yi to Pakistan after he took over the post, Daily Times reported. The main purpose of his visit was to finalise the upcoming tour of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pakistan at an early date this year. Pakistan President Mamnoon
Hussain, in his meeting with Yi, stated that Pakistan attached great importance to its relations with China. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during his meeting with Wang Yi, said the leadership of both countries was committed to further strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership. He noted that wide ranging economic cooperation between Pakistan and China has entered a new dimension. It was vital for the two countries to translate their shared vision for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into a reality, he said. Wang Yi agreed that there was a need for speedy imple-
mentation of CPEC and other vital projects, which would transform the entire region. Sharif said that friendship with China was the cornerstone of Pakistan's foreign policy, emphasising that China has always been a sincere friend of Pakistan. He said that Pakistan was eagerly looking forward to
welcoming President Xi to Pakistan, adding that the government believed this important visit would further strengthen the all-weather strategic partnership between the two countries bringing them closer to achieving the dream of building a "PakistanChina Community of Shared Destiny".
Yi added that during the visit of the Chinese president, both sides would hold in-depth exchanges on all matters of mutual interest, including economic, security and regional developments in the backdrop of the changing international scenario. He said that Pakistan and China were iron brothers and frequent bilateral exchanges have further strengthened this relationship. Wang said the menace of terrorism and extremism was the common enemy of both the countries and China would continue its cooperation with Pakistan to successfully meet this challenge.
Eight killed in Lahore suicide bombing
PLUS SAVE UP TO $5,000 ON REMAINING 2014 MODELS Lahore (IANS): At least eight people were killed and several others, including a child, injured in a suicide bombing in Pakistan's Lahore city Tuesday, with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claiming responsibility for the terrorist attack. Officials said the attack targeted the Police Lines but the security measures forced the bomber to detonate his explosives prematurely, Dawn reported. Initial investigations revealed that ball bearings were used in the bomb attack in which a police official was also killed and a policewoman was among the injured, police sources said. A spokesperson for the TTP's (also called Pakistan Taliban) Jamaat-ul-Ahrar faction, said the attack was carried out by the splinter group. The blast occurred near the main gate of Police Lines in the city's Gujjar Singh area. Several vehicles parked near the blast site caught fire and the window panes of nearby buildings were also shattered. Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf(PTI) chairman Imran Khan strongly condemned the attack. Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif also condemned the bombing and sought a report on the incident. Witnesses said gunshots were heard from inside the Police Lines, which is close to the headquarter of Pakistan Railways. Security personnel, however, said the shots were fired by members of the law enforcement agencies following the blast.

Malaysian Open win motivated me: Golfer Lahiri New Delhi (IANS): Star Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri Tuesday said his maiden European Tour victory at the Malaysian Open a fortnight ago motivated him "to not stop believing". The 27-year-old carded twounder 70 and par-72 in the first two rounds, respectively, in Malaysia. He was joint 21st after the first two days at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. However, he charged into contention in the third round of the $3 million tournament, shooting a stunning 10-under 62 to trail third round leader Bernd Wiesberger of Austria by five shots. Continuing his charge, Lahiri fired 68 to register a one-stroke victory over Wiesberger and earned $500,000 for the victory. "That was a very special win.
It was the sixth time I won (on the Asian Tour) and was my first on the European Tour -that’s what made it more special. The other thing that sets this win apart is that I finally won a big event," Lahiri said. The Malaysian Open was cosanctioned event by the Asian and European Tour. "The way I won the title was also special. In the first two rounds, I was not satisfied with my performance apart from the result. I was trying and missing a lot. I did well on the third day and won it finally. That also inspired me not to stop believing. It is what I dreamt of and I achieved." The win also helped the Arjuna awardee, who started playing the sport at the Army Golf Course in Bengaluru, jump
36 places to be 37th in the world golf rankings. With this ranking (now 39) and consistency, Lahiri is looking on course for qualifying for the 2016 Olympics. Golfers
ranked inside the top-60 will qualify for the Rio Games. Lahiri is also in line to play the Masters tournament -- one of the four Majors of the sport to be held in April in the American city of Augusta. However, Lahiri wants to stay in the present. "Apart from the dreams and aspirations, I like to live in the present. For me, it is always about the next week, next tournament. I don't like to set farsighted targets," said the Bengaluru-born. For the moment, Lahiri hopes to fulfil his childhood dream of a victory at the Indian Open, starting Thursday at the Delhi Golf Club here. In the last edition in 2013, Lahiri and his compatriot S.S.P. Chowrasia were tied second as Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh bagged
the title. “It was a case of so near and yet so far,” said Lahiri. A year before that, Lahiri was tied fifth in Bengaluru and in 2009, he was tied third. So he really hopes to make up for those misses. The Indian, who is the highest ranked player in the elite field, will challenge for honours against title holder Siddikur and 21-time European Tour winner Miguel Angel Jimenez, who returns to India for the first time since 2008. Scott Hend of Australia, a sixtime Asian Tour winner, Jyoti Randhawa, only the second player to win three Indian Open titles, Thaworn Wiratchant, Jeev Milkha Singh and Marcus Fraser will also feature in the event.
Lance Armstrong to pay $10 mn in damages New York (IANS): American cyclist Lance Armstrong must pay $10 million in damages after losing a lawsuit with insurance firm SCA Promotions Inc. In relation to his seven Tour de France victories, the cyclist had received $7.5 million in payment from SCA in 2006. Much later, Armstrong admitted to doping and was found to have lied in proceedings, following which his victories were stripped off, reports the BBC. "The award, which must be
paid directly to SCA, is believed to be the largest award of sanctions assessed
against an individual in American judicial history," SCA said. After Armstrong’s sixth Tour de France win in 2004, SCA at first refused to pay the bonus. The former dragged the company to an arbitration hearing in Dallas in 2005 and won because the contract between the parties stipulated that the insurance money would be payable if Armstrong was the "official winner" of the Tour. He was awarded $2.5 million dollars in damages and
costs. "SCA's dispute with Armstrong is not over. It has a currently pending lawsuit in Dallas state district court where it is pursuing additional claims against Lance Armstrong and Bill Stapleton (Armstrong's agent)," said the firm. In 2012, Armstrong was stripped off all his seven Tour de France titles and issued a life ban by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. The Texan was accused of being part of the "most sophisticat-

ed, professionalised and successful doping programme" that sport had ever known. "It is hard to describe how much harm Lance Armstrong's web of lies caused SCA but this is a good first start towards repairing that damage," said Bob Hamman, SCA Promotions president and founder. Jeff Tillotson, SCA's promotions lawyer, added: "This record-breaking award was justified given Armstrong's outrageous conduct."

to make popcorn at home is to pop kernels in an electric air blower. A more traditional (and more flavourful) way is to heat a spoonful of vegetable oil in a large, heavy pot with a lid. When the oil is hot, add enough popcorn kernels to cover the bottom of the pot in a single layer, and put the lid on. Cooking over high heat, shake the pot every now and then to keep the kernels roasting evenly. It only takes a minute or two before they start popping. Be sure to keep the lid on, and to keep occasionally shaking, to avoid scorching. It’s a little more effort than the blower, but the taste is incomparable. You might think of popcorn as an old-fashioned kind of treat. You’d be right, in a way – there’s archaeological evidence of popcorn at sites all over Central and South America, where corn played a central part in
ancient life. In early America, popcorn was popped by holding an oiled ear of corn over a fire, and then eating the popped kernels right off the cob. It was also enjoyed as a breakfast cereal. While today we may think of mostly as a something to eat at the movies, popcorn can be a delicious snack at home when flavoured with a little butter, one of your favourite Canadian cheeses, and some wholesome seasonings. It’s great fun to slowly make your way through a large bowl of it in front of the tv, but a small handful of it also makes a quick and tasty snack that won’t spoil your appetite. ACTRESS Shazahn Padamsee says she enjoys featuring in comedy movies. "I love doing comedy films...When you do a comedy film, energy level is so
high on the sets," Shazahn, who will be seen in Saurabh Verma's directorial "Solid Patels", told IANS. "Saurabh is quick with his work. He doesn't take more than two takes in a day so... It's a total family comedy," she added. Also starring Shiv Pandit, Ali Asgar, Vaishali Desai and Kettan Singh, the movie is slated to release April 24. Satisfy my food cravings on the weekend, says Kareena Actors are always under constant pressure to maintain their physical appearance and keep a tab on their calorie intake. But actress Kareena Kapoor has found a cheat code to pave her way out of the strict regime - indulging on food on the weekends. The actress, who launched Magnum, one of the world’s leading premium adult icecream brands, here Wednesday, said she doesn't fight her cravings and satisfies her sweet tooth on weekends. "I have a sweet tooth. So from Monday to Friday, I stick to my diet and regime. But I tend to indulge in whatever I want to do or whatever I want to eat on Friday evening or Saturday,” said the actress as she exuded sophistication and glamour in her long shimmery gown at the launch event. Kareena will add spunk to the Hindustan Unilever Limited’s brand as a “Pleasure Ambassador”. Asked her favourite flavour, she was quick to plump for the classic flavour of the ice-cream
which is just “perfect”. Being associated with the brand with tagline “Enjoy the royal treatment” is not Kareena's only royal connection. She is married to actor Saif Ali Khan, who belongs to a royal family. But the 34-year-old actress termed the royal connection as a mere “coincidence”. “It's just a coincidence. With the tagline they want to elaborate on the feeling that seeps into you after you take first bite of Magnum icecream -- you get the royal feeling and royal treatment,” she said. Kareena also admitted
she feels honoured to be associated with a brand that has been a part of her life since her childhood. “We started this association in 2014 when they offered me to be the brand ambassador and now its been a year. The journey has been great. As a kid I always used to have Magnum ice-cream whenever we went abroad for vacations. So it was quite an honour for me when they asked me to be the face of the brand after they came to India. I am happy that they have continued their association,” she said. (IANS)

2016 Acura RDX: Refreshed and energized Coming off its best-ever year, the newly refreshed and energized 2016 Acura RDX luxury sport-utility also made its Canadian debut at the Canadian International Auto Show, sporting a host of significant upgrades to performance, luxury prestige and styling. Launching at Acura dealerships nationwide this spring, the 2016 Acura RDX receives Jewel Eye™ LED projector headlamps and LED taillights, a new, more powerful 3.5-litre iVTEC® V-6 engine, and class leading safety is brought to the RDX with standard AcuraWatch™ safety and driver-assistive technologies, and a host of new luxury features and technologies, including a new line-
topping RDX with Elite Package. The Acura RDX and MDX have formed a potent 1-2 punch in the luxury SUV game, both posting record sales in 2014. With the 2016 MDX also getting significant new features and technologies including standard AcuraWatch safety features, and a 9-speed
automatic transmission, the new RDX and MDX stand as an even more formidable presence in the luxury SUV space. “The RDX ended on a high note in 2014, posting its best sales year ever, but at Acura, we are not content in resting on our laurels,” said Jerry Chenkin, President and CEO, Honda
Canada Inc. “The 2016 RDX gets a major infusion of Acura brand DNA including enhancements to styling, driving performance, and exciting new luxury feature-content, further solidifying its place as the one to beat in the entry luxury SUV segment.” The 2016 RDX gets an
important performance boost courtesy of its updated 3.5-litre SOHC iVTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) cylinder deactivation technology. Peak horsepower and torque output are up—279 (+6 hp) and 252 lb.-ft. (+1 lb.ft.), respectively, while sporting a broader torque curve for more immediate and powerful acceleration response—right where it counts. Variable Cylinder Management™ allows for deactivation of two of the engine’s six cylinders under light engine loads. Driving refinement is further enhanced by new active front and rear engine mounts, updates to the steering control system and
increased suspension mount stiffness. Additionally, the RDX’s all-wheel-drive system – AWD with Intelligent Control – has been tuned for greater rear torque bias to further enhance dynamic stability and all-weather performance. The 2016 RDX also gets key elements of Acura design DNA with restyled front and rear fascia, including the addition of Acura’s signature Jewel Eye™ LED headlights and LED taillights with light-pipe design on all models and a new three-dimensional grille treatment. The lower front and rear fascia areas also support the new look with fresh luxury details while all models receive new wheel designs.
Mazda RX-7 could return in 2020
We like writing about the next Mazda RX-7 because it's like writing about the Chupacabra, Slenderman, or the Florida Skunkape, all of which are imaginary creatures seen by someone who knew someone who had an uncle whose dead great-grandfather's sister took a picture of it, invariably at night, while she was drunk, with her 1933 Kodak Brownie.
Autocar is the latest with an RX-7 revival, saying it could come as soon as 2020 to celebrate Mazda's 100th anniversary. Before we get to that, let's take a brief look at RX-7 rumors. In 2009 there was speculation we'd get a concept RX-7 at the Tokyo Motor Show. That same year it was predicted the RX-8 would die to make room for a new
RX-7 in 2012. In 2010 Mazda was developing a 300-horsepower rotary for the RX-7 that could run on gasoline or diesel and had better fuel economy and less oil consumption. Then Autocar said we could get the new RX-7 by 2013, a rumor that turned into a new RX-9 based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata platform. In 2012 the potential arrival date had
become 2017. In 2013 the company CEO Masamichi Kogai said the equivalent of "Not gonna happen," and he said it again last year, just 90 days ago. It should be clear by now that this car is Mazda's version of the Lotus Esprit. Whew. Now that we're clear on all that, what does Autocar say? That a follow-up to the extinct
RX-8 is coming that will sit on the new MX-5 Miata platform, and Mazda's vice president of European R&D said there are still 30 engineers working on rotary engines in partnership with universities. The successor will be front-engined and rear-wheel drive, have either two seats or 2+2 seating, and could be called RX-6, RX-7, or RX-9.
That sounds like three distinct statements, only one of which is definitely true, that could possibly just maybe add up to a new RX-7, but could even more likely add up to a rotary-engined concept car that never sees production. We've only got five more years to wait, and since we've been begging at the RX-7 doors this long...

Pakistan for meaningful dialogue with India Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan stands for "meaningful and serious dialogue" with India, a top official has said, after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. Reacting with "cautious optimism", Sartaj Aziz, the advisor on foreign affairs and national security, said India took the step due to persuasion by the UN and some countries, the Daily Times reported Sunday.
Aziz said Modi's telephone call and the decision to send Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar to Islamabad was a good start in breaking the ice between the two countries. But whether it would lead to the actual resumption of a meaningful dialogue remained to be seen and depended on the talks between the foreign secretaries. He was quoted as saying that he was not a pessimist. "I am cautiously optimistic now
that visit has been resumed. Obviously there would be discussion on the agenda scope of the dialogue, modalities and the timeline. Once the dialogue process starts, it gathers its own momentum." Aziz said it was the result of persuasion by the UN and other countries that India was forced to re-initiate the dialogue process and "may be some internal dynamics of Kashmir played some role".
Regarding Kashmir, he said there was no major change in Pakistan's policy. But "we are ready to talk on other issues" in the hope that the issue would be addressed seriously. Pakistan expects India to make a "serious resumption of dialogue", Aziz said. "It has to be composite and comprehensive dialogue." Aziz acknowledged that Pakistan had hardened its stand on several issues, including
Kashmir, after the suspension of talks as the peace process "has not moved". He added: "There is tension on the borders, you can't just ignore it." He said Pakistan could no longer say that it wouldn't insist on the UN resolutions on Kashmir. Aziz said former president Pervez Musharraf's four-point formula for resolving the Kashmir issue too might no longer be relevant.
Pakistani military operation to be completed by year-end
Islamabad (IANS): The Pakistan government said that an ongoing military operation will be completed by the end of the year, media reported Monday. Minister for States and Frontier Regions Abdul Qadir Baloch said that after "Zarb-e-Azb" is
completed, a 'miniMarshall plan' will be launched for the socioeconomic progress of the people of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Dawn online reported. "The era of terrorists will end in FATA and there will be complete
peace in the entire tribal areas by the end of this year," Baloch said. He said FATA was no more a stronghold of the Taliban where they committed acts of terrorism, produced and smuggled narcotic drugs and indulged in kidnappings and shootings.
The government would launch a comprehensive plan for development activities after restoration of peace in FATA. "The plan is so big that we call it a mini-Marshall Plan," he added. Director General of Inter-Services Public
Relations (ISPR) Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa said that terrorists had controlled vast areas in North and South Waziristan, but now the army had pushed them to a small pocket bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, President
Mamnoon Hussain has removed legal hitches to pave the way for development in FATA and approved two summaries Saturday under which economic zones will be established and trade will be promoted in the region.
Militant commander killed in Pakistan Islamabad (IANS): A commander of the banned Lashkar-iJhangvi, along with an aide, has been killed during a raid by security forces on a hotel in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's Balochistan province, media reported Monday. "The man killed was identified as Usman
Saifullah Kurd who masterminded various suicide attacks and bombings at mosques belonging to the Hazara Shia community in Quetta and other areas of Balochistan," a senior police officer told Dawn. A security man was also killed and three others were injured in an exchange of fire
Sunday. Kurd was wanted in various cases of terrorism and escaped from a jail in the Anti-Terrorism Force headquarters in the high security zone of Quetta cantonment in 2007. He carried a bounty of Pakistani Rs.5 million (about $50,000) on his head.
Frontier Corps and other security agencies carried out the raid based on information about the presence of the commander and his companion at the hotel in Gahi Chowk area. The militants, who were having lunch when security personnel entered the hotel, opened fire injuring four
security personnel. The security personnel retaliated and in the exchange of fire Usman and his aide, who could not be identified, were killed, the report said. The injured security men were taken to the Combined Militar y Hospital where one of them died. An anti-terrorism
court in Quetta had sentenced the commander to death in 2003 for his involvement in two terrorist attacks in the city in which a large number of Shias were killed. Quetta police chief Abdul Razzaq Cheema said over 12 suspects were also arrested from the hotel.

Subaru Canada: ALG's Best Mainstream Brand with Five Awards offering standard AWD in a segment where price is usually a large consideration." Lastly, the 2015 Subaru Legacy was named Best Midsize Car. "The all-new Legacy's mix of all-weather capability and Subaru reliability, along with a new dose of refinement,
Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) is thrilled to be named overall Best Mainstream Brand for 2015 and take home four Canadian Residual Value Segment Awards from ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data. The seventh annual ALG awards honoured 2015 vehicles predicted to hold their value better than any other vehicles in the segment. Winning the Best Mainstream Brand award means that Subaru holds its value better than all other mainstream brands in Canada. "Subaru's commitment to performance, durability and safety are the key reasons why there is a progressive desirability for their products in the Canadian market," said Geoff Helby, Canadian regional director, ALG. "Subaru continues to expand its devotee base with compelling redesigns. Subdued fleet sales and incentives ensure that sales growth occurs by organic retail demand, which in turn enhances Subaru's used market brand image." "Subaru is delighted to receive this outstanding recognition from ALG. To be named Best Mainstream Brand with
best-in-class honours for four Subaru models is further proof of what Subaru owners already know – a Subaru is excellent value for the money," said Shiro Ohta, chairman, president, and CEO of Subaru Canada. "This adds yet another layer of confidence for Canadians considering Subaru ownership." For the fifth consecutive year, the Subaru Outback received a Canadian Residual Value Award in the Mid-size Utility Vehicle – 2 Row segment. This is especially notable as ALG's Residual Value Awards have only been announced in Canada for the past seven years. "The Outback earns its fifth consecutive Residual Value Award as a unique entry from a brand that draws great loyalty from Canadians," said Helby. "The Outback's 2015 redesign offers a mix of standard allwheel drive, great utility and interior refinement. Subaru has evolved its SUV alternative over the years, offering a more spacious interior while keeping the benefits of its adventureinspired roots." In the hotly contested Sports Car segment, the Subaru BRZ offers thrilling performance,
Subaru dependability as well as a low entry price. These attributes help the BRZ proudly take home top honours as Best Sports Car for the third year in a row. "Subaru's rear-wheel-drive coupe is one of the most exciting things to happen to the Sports Car segment in a generation," remarked Helby. "Offering the thrill of a raw sporting experience with the quality of the Subaru brand, the BRZ is a great mix of excitement and value. Few cars can match its feeling of connectedness to the road, even at twice the price." Since the awards' inception, the Subaru Impreza has remained a top pick for six of the past seven years, winning five consecutive segment awards from 2009 to 2013. The Impreza reclaims its top spot for 2015 as Best Compact Car. "The Impreza's combination of all-wheel-drive capability, segment-competitive fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive attitude makes it one of the most complete vehicles in this hypercompetitive segment," said Helby. "Even relatively late in its lifecycle, the Impreza continues to provide a compelling value for the Canadian market,

makes it an excellent choice for families," concluded Helby. The annual ALG Canada Residual Value Awards recognize automakers' outstanding achievements for vehicles that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a three-year period for luxury brands and a four-

The new 911 Targa 4 GTS: More powerful, dynamic and exquisitely styled To mark the 50th anniversary of the 911 Targa, Porsche is offering this very popular model in the more powerful and dynamic GTS version for the first time. The targa concept of the 911 Targa 4 GTS delivers very safe driving enjoyment with all-wheel drive and a rollover protection bar; it also delivers open-air fun with a targa top that stows fully automatically. Contributing to a boost in dynamic performance are the 430 hp (316 kW) GTS engine together with the standard Sport Chrono package, PASM chassis, 20-inch wheels and a sport exhaust system. Despite its significantly
extended features, the weight-topower ratio with the 430-hp engine was improved from 3.9 kg to just 3.6 kg per horsepower compared to the S model. This lets the Targa 4 GTS reach a top speed of over 300 km/h (186 mph) with a PDK transmission, and the stopwatch records 4.3 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km/h (0 – 60 mph in 4.1 seconds). Although the engine produces an additional 30 hp (22 kW), its combined fuel consumption – which ranges from 9.2 to 10.0 l/100 km, depending on the type of transmission – is exactly the same as for the 911 Targa 4S.
The latest Targa can be made out at first glance as a GTS model with all-wheel drive, because – compared to the two-wheel drive 911 Carrera models – the rear wheel arches are flared an additional 22 millimeters, and the rear tires are ten millimeters wider. The front view is defined by the sport design of the car's front end with an opening for the auxiliary middle radiator and the smoked bi-xenon headlights that feature the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS). In a side view, characteristic GTS attributes are the silky gloss black 20inch 911 Turbo S wheels with central locks, the sport design
door mirrors and “GTS" signatures on the doors. The “targa" logo on the silver rollover protection bar is also painted in silky gloss black. Black accents at the rear are the glossy trim on the air inlet screen, the model logo and the chrome tailpipes. GTS DNA also defines the interior of the 911 Targa 4 GTS. Integrated at the center of the instrument panel is the stopwatch of the Sport Chrono package. In the front, the four-way adjustable Sport Plus seats – with their black GTS logo on the head restraints – provide additional lateral support and long-distance cruising comfort for driver and
passenger. The dominant interior material is black Alcantara, which is just half the weight of leather. The targa has been an established member of the 911 lineup since it made its debut back in 1965. Around one out of eight 911 cars ever sold was a targa. The market share of the latest generation of this exquisitely styled 911 with its characteristic rollover protection bar is 13 percent – and it is growing. With the 911 Targa 4 GTS, Porsche is extending its lineup of the modern classic by adding a top model whose extensive package of standard features and price are appealing.
