New Delhi (IANS): Two days before he takes oath as Delhi's chief minister, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and raised the issue of granting full statehood to the capital. Kejriwal, who is reaching out to the Modi-led central government after weeks of a bitter election campaign, also invited the prime minister to his oath-taking ceremony but the latter said he had some prior engagements. Kejriwal and his close associate Manish Sisodia, who is likely to be the deputy chief minister, were with Modi for some 20 minutes. Full statehood to Delhi was one of the promises made by the Aam Aadmi Party in the run-up to the assembly polls. Modi, who during the campaign had called Kejriwal a "Naxalite" who should be banished to the forest, received the AAP leader warmly. "We discussed issues concerning Delhi over 'chai pe charcha'. One of the issues was granting Delhi full statehood," Sisodia later told the media. He said Modi promised to ponder over the issue and assured the AAP leaders the Centre's full cooperation to the Delhi government. After Kejriwal led his party

to a landslide win in the Delhi election that left the BJP with just three of the 70 asembly seats, Modi congratulated the AAP leader and invited him for a meeting over tea. That day too, he told Kejriwal that the central government would extend full cooperation to the Delhi government. Meanwhile, names of ministers in the Kejriwal cabinet have almost been finalised with Sisodia tipped to become the deputy chief minister. Delhi. The duo Wednesday had discussed the same issues with Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Naidu's ministry controls the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and large areas of land in the capital. The home ministry controls Delhi Police. Thursday's Modi-Kejriwal meeting -- their first -- is expected to break the ice in their relations. The AAP leader took on Modi at Varanasi during the Lok Sabha election and lost badly. On Feb 10, the AAP turned the tables on the BJP, delivering Modi's party its first defeat since its Lok Sabha triumph. Like in December 2013, Kejriwal will take oath as chief minister at the sprawling Ramlila Maidan in the heart of Delhi. An estimated 100,000 people attended that event in 2013, when the AAP created sensation by winning 28 seats in its maiden election. It formed a government with Congress help that lasted just 49 days. Now that the AAP has won a staggering 67 of the 70 seats, both the party and the police are expecting a much larger crowd.

AAP tsunami wrecks BJP, Congress; others mock at Modi New Delhi (IANS): In one of the most stunning comebacks in Indian political history, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Tuesday scored a landslide victory in Delhi, delivering to the BJP its first defeat since its historic Lok Sabha triumph and reducing the Congress, which ruled the capital for 15 years till 2013, to a virtual nonentity. Tens of thousands of jubilant AAP activists celebrated across the capital and in many other cities as the 27month-old party grabbed a sensational 67 of the 70 seats in the Delhi assembly, leaving just three seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — the highest victory margin for any party in Delhi so far. Although Delhi accounts for only 70 of the 4,120 assembly seats in the country, the AAP’s spectacular showing had its predictable fallout, with opposition parties and even BJP ally Shiv Sena taking potshots at Modi. The win gave the AAP, India’s youngest political outfit, 96 percent of seats in a legislature – another record – and a new lease of life after it was written off following its earlier turbulent 49-day stint in Delhi and the later humiliating rout in the 2014 Lok Sabha battle. So stunning and sweeping was Tuesday’s victory in what was supposed to be a tough election with Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself leading the BJP’s charge that many AAP leaders and workers who had slogged for

months broke into tears. Kejriwal, 46, had teary eyes as AAP colleagues repeatedly hugged him and lifted him in the air, and congratulatory messages poured in from all over the country thick and fast. Outside his home, thousands kept chanting the party’s catchy line: “Paanch Saal, Kejriwal!” The Congress simply sank, with its chief campaigner Ajay Maken resigning as the party’s general secretary after he finished third in his Sadar Bazar constituency. Most Congress candidates lost by huge margins, one by 95,000 votes. The BJP suffered far more humiliation, with its chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi, who had been personally picked by Modi, losing to a little known advocate of the AAP. Two of the three BJP winners scraped through by just 5-6,000 votes in contrast to the giant margins scored by AAP candidates. With the BJP subdued, Modi, who led an aggressive campaign against Kejriwal

and called him a “Naxalite” (Maoist) who should be banished to the forests, congratulated the AAP leader and offered his government’s full cooperation. The AAP said Kejriwal will take oath as Delhi’s chief minister Saturday, exactly a year after he resigned. Delhi Police said it will provide “Z” category security that would include at least 30 commandoes to Kejriwal. Kejriwal later reached the AAP office in central Delhi where he told boisterous supporters waving party flags and brooms — the AAP election symbol — that the AAP sweep was “a victory for truth and honesty”. He also urged his supporters not to become arrogant, pointing out that it was arrogance which had first decimated the Congress in Delhi and now the BJP. “This is incredible. We can’t believe it,” AAP leader and former Delhi minister Manish Sisodia told IANS. Senior AAP leader Yogendra Yadav called it a victory of proverbial David over

Goliath. In remarks directed at Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had asked people in Delhi to vote for the AAP, said it was a “big defeat for the arrogant and those spreading hate”. “The election is a turning point… The country needed this change.” Gandhian Anna Hazare added: “The result is a defeat for Narendra Modi. What did the BJP do in the past nine months? The BJP made promises to tackle corruption. Instead they took anti-people, anti-farmer decisions.” Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed said: “The Delhi elections have asserted the diversity of our country and the need to respect it which the BJP should learn not to ignore.” In Mumbai, Shiv Sena

president Uddhav Thackeray termed the AAP sweep a ‘tsunami’. “This is a great day for democracy. It was not just a wave. It was a tsunami which swept Delhi. I agree with Anna Hazare that this is a defeat for Modi, not (Kiran) Bedi.” The AAP was, however, more circumspect in its assessment. “It is a giant leap for a small party,” AAP ideologue Yogendra Yadav told the media. “We still have a long way to go (vis-a-vis national politics). We have just got a toe-hold.” One after another, BJP leaders accepted defeat and congratulated the AAP and Kejriwal. Said Satish Upadhyay, the party’s Delhi unit head: “Clearly, we made a mistake in understanding the people’s mood.” “We accept our massive defeat,” added Communication Minister

Ravi Shankar Prasad. Bedi, whose induction as the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate caused fissures in the party, said: “I have not lost. Let the BJP assess why they lost. I gave my very best.” The AAP is set to bag an incredible 54 percent of all votes. It swept all parts of the capital, including the middle class areas as well as the numerous low income neighbourhoods. All social classes, including Muslims and Christians, voted for it overwhelmingly. Kejriwal himself won easily from New Delhi constituency, where he created history in 2013 by defeating three-time chief minister Sheila Dikshit. Most AAP leaders also made it comfortably, including Somnath Bharti, Manish Sisodia and Rakhi Birla, who were ministers in the earlier Kejriwal government.

Union cabinet meets after BJP’s debacle in Delhi polls THE union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tuesday, hours after the BJP’s defeat in the Delhi assembly polls. The meeting was attended by senior ministers including

Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj and the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders are learnt to have discussed the Delhi poll outcome. The Aam Aadmi Party registered a landslide victory in the

polls winning 67 seats and squeezing the BJP to just three. The results came as a shock to the party which won Lok Sabha election under Modi’s leadership last year and has done well in the subsequent assembly polls.

An official release said that the cabinet gave its approval for increasing the authorised share capital of the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation (NMDFC) from Rs.1,500 crore to Rs.3,000 crore

[1 crore = 10 million]. NMDFC is a central sector public enterprise (CPSE) in the ministry of minority affairs. The cabinet also gave its nod for restructuring of the NMFDC’s business model.

Blame game in Congress over Delhi result, Sonia intervenes New Delhi (IANS): A blame game broke out in the Congress Thursday over its washout in the Delhi assembly polls with former chief minister Sheila Dikshit blaming party campaign chief Ajay Maken. Party president Sonia Gandhi intervened to ask senior party leaders to observe restraint. Dikshit, who led the Congress to three successive poll victories in the capital but lost the 2013 polls, said that Maken was responsible for the party failing to win even a single seat in the 70member assembly.

"Maken was the Delhi campaign committee chairman. As such, he was responsible (for the loss in Delhi)," the three-time former chief minister said in an interview to news channel Times Now. The Aam Admi Party scored a landslide win, bagging 67 seats, reducing Bharatiya Janata Party to three seats and wiping out the Congress. Party's Delhi in charge P.C. Chacko signalled unhappiness over Dikshit's remarks. He said Dikshit's views were

"personal" and Maken "did his best for this (Delhi) election". "If anybody saying anything otherwise, that is very unfair. The party doesn't endorse that view," he said. "At a time when the party is already in crisis...party leaders should do soul searching instead of blaming each other and work for the revival of the party," he added. Chacko, who later met Gandhi to brief her about the results, said she had told party leaders to be restrained in their comments and

termed the internal tussle as unfortunate. "She said that senior leaders should keep restraint," he said. Chacko and state unit chief Arvinder Singh Lovely had met party vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday and talked about Delhi results. In her interview, Dikshit also held the party's campaign was not "vociferous" in publicizing the development work the Congress had done for national capital, adding that the message did not got out "effectively" enough.

'South Asia suffering due to tension between India and Pakistan' New Delhi (IANS): The economic progress in South Asia has suffered due to bilateral tensions between India and Pakistan, Pakistani High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit said Thursday. "Because of the Pakistan-India problems in this region, we have not been able to put South Asia on the trajectory of economic well being, interdependence as well as integration," he said at a gathering of school students from the two countries here. "How unfortunate it is regions around the world promote economic cooperation and work together to address global challenges like terrorism, climate change, but here we don't see much intellectual activity as compared to the European

Union," he added. As many as 50 delegates, including 30 school students from Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Islamabad are here on an exchange programme that seeks to strengthen relations, spread peace and friendship between the two nations. "The interaction between the youth of the two countries is so important and essential to build bridges. These interaction will also help to dispel stereotypes," Basit told IANS. Indian students from Dev Samaj Modern School and DPS Sushantlok here also participated in the "Students Exchange for Change 2013-2015", organised by two NGOs - India-based Routes2Roots in collaboration with The

Citizens Archive of Pakistan. The gathering showcased greetings, letters, collages and videos that school children on either side of the border exchanged with one another during the initiative that spanned over 12 months. While pinning hope on the youth of the two countries to normalize strained relations, Basit said: "You guys (the youth) have to take the initiative in promoting a positive path towards normalization of relationship between the two countries. "My generation has failed to build bridges between the two countries, but we are confident that your generation would not fail. Because you have the capacity to transcend subjectivity," he added.

Asked if the leadership of Rahul Gandhi ought be reconsidered in view of the sixth election that the party has lost under his watch, she said he couldn't be held responsible for losses in assembly elections. "The elections in Delhi were a state election. So how can you blame Rahul Gandhi? He is not directly responsible. It's the local leaders in the state, the presidents of the state Congress committee units are entrusted with the work of carrying on the election in the state," she said.

Prime Minister appalled at the news of temple being built in his name INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has said that he is appalled at the news of a temple being built in his name. “Have seen the news about a Temple being built in my name. I was appalled. This is shocking and against India`s great traditions. Building such Temples is

not what our culture teaches us. Personally, it made me very sad. Would urge those doing it not to do it. If you have time and resources, please devote the same towards fulfilling our dream of a Clean India,” Modi tweeted. BBC reported that Modi’s fans

scrapped plans to open a temple dedicated to him after he said he was "appalled" by the idea. The Hindu temple, with an idol of Modi, was to open in Kotharia village in his home state of Gujarat on Sunday. Jayesh Patel, head of the

group that built the temple, told BBC it would still open but he would replace the Modi idol with one of Mother India. "Our belief will remain the same but there will be no Modi idol now," he said, BBC reported.

AAP, Congress get income tax notices New Delhi (IANS): The income tax department has served a notice on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seeking an explanation about the charges of receiving funds from dubious sources as alleged by a splinter group of the party. A similar notice has also been served on the Congress party, a Congress spokesperson told IANS. The AAP, which has already denied the charges, said they were not bothered by the notice and would reply in due course. "Let them do whatever they want. We welcome the probe. We will respond to them in due time," an AAP leader said. The IT department, which functions under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) of the finance ministry, has asked the party to furnish its reply by Feb 16 -- two days after Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to take oath as Delhi chief minister following a stunning win in the Feb 7 Delhi assembly polls. The notice, addressed to the principal officer Aam Aadmi Party, said four companies had transferred money to AAP and "enquiries revealed that such companies are not prima facie genuine." "The companies and the

directors are not available at the addresses mentioned in the bank and government agencies," it added. The notice was sent Feb 9, a day before the Delhi poll results were announced. The AAP won 67 out of the 70 seats in the Delhi assembly. Apart from the AAP and the Congress, 48 other entities in Delhi were issued IT notices. The issue also created quite a buzz on social networking sites with many people tweeting about the IT notice to AAP, soon after it won the Delhi polls. "A strange gift on their victory, IT Notice to AAP in relation to 2Cr Black money, investigation proceedings initiated," Media personality Pritish Nandy tweeted. In the run-up to the election, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had alleged that the AAP was caught red-handed while receiving dubious funds from companies that did not have any business. He accused the AAP leadership of adopting diversionary tactics to deflect attention, adding such donations amounted to Rs. two crore through cheques of Rs.50 lakh each from four firms. The AAP had protested

against such allegations saying: "Mr. Finance Minister. Stop throwing muck. Act. Arrest me if i am guilty," Kejriwal had tweeted. "Fin min (finance minister) says we took hawala money. Hawala money in cheques? I dare Fin min to arrest me if we took hawala money." Kejriwal had urged Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu to set up a special team to probe not just his party but the BJP and the Congress as well. The Congress party, meanwhile, said it has also received a similar missive from the IT department. "Yes, we have been served a notice. It is clearly a sign of political vendetta. Let me ask: Why has a similar notice not been served on BJP? Why single us and the AAP out. BJP has also spent crores of rupees on elections," a Congress party spokesperson told IANS. Last week, the AAP Volunteer Action Manch (AVAM), a breakaway group of the party, had questioned the sources of funding for the Kejriwal-led party, alleging some of it could be sourced to what it described as "fraud" companies. It claimed the money had been donated on the midnight of April 15 last year.

Texas allows Sikh policemen to sport beards, turbans

Washington (IANS): In one of the biggest goodwill gestures to one of the largest communities in the US -- the Sikhs -- the state of Texas has allowed on-duty Sikh officers to sport essential Sikh religious symbols like beards and turbans. According to a Washington Post report Friday, the decision of the county sheriff of greater Houston fulfilled one of the long standing

demands of the Sikhs and made the county's police force one of the first few in the nation -- along with those in Washington DC and Riverside, California - to permit Sikhs to wear their “articles of faith” on patrol. “By making these religious accommodations, we will ensure that (our) office reflects the community we serve, one of the most culturally rich and diverse in America,”

Sheriff Adrian Garcia said in a statement. “Deputies need to not only understand, respect and communicate with all segments of the population, but represent it as well,” he added. Sikh leaders in Houston and Washington welcomed the announcement, and the Sikh American Legal Defence and Education Fund (SALDEF) circulated Internet photos of Garcia shaking hands with Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, 37, who was wearing a blue police uniform, navy blue turban and a short beard. “With this policy, one of the largest sheriff's offices in the country has affirmed that a person does not have to choose between their faith and a career of service,” said Jasjit Singh, executive director of SALDEF in Washington. The group's Houston representative said the move would help the law enforcement agency to “attract the best and brightest from across our community...”. There are at least 200,000 Sikhs in the US, mostly from India. Some Sikh groups claim that the number is as high as 700,000. Many of them are mid-

dle class, educated professionals in a wide range of occupations. Their numbers have grown significantly since the 1970s, with large concentrations in urban areas, including New York and Los Angeles. Community leaders said that there were about 10,000 Sikhs in the Houston region alone. Because of their turbans and beards, Sikhs have often been mistaken for Muslims and have faced harassment and attacks, especially after the 9/11 attacks.

Punjab BJP minister blames Akali colleague for attack on brother Chandigarh (IANS): A BJP minister in the Punjab government Wednesday blamed a cabinet colleague, who is a member of alliance partner Shiromani Akali Dal, for a "preplanned" murderous attack on his brother. Medical Education minister Anil Joshi, who is from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),

told the media here that his brother was attacked and fired upon by some Akali Dal councillors in Tarn Taran town, 250 km from here. Joshi released video footage of the attack and said it was a "pre-planned attempt to murder". He demanded a judicial probe into the incident, alleging

that police and the administration were trying to shield the Akali Dal leaders. Joshi alleged that the attack was carried out by people close to Punjab's powerful Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia. Raja Joshi, the brother of the BJP minister, was allegedly assaulted and fired at by local Akali Dal leaders at the deputy

commissioner's office complex owing to differences over municipal elections. "If this is the fate of my brother, what can we say about the security and justice for common people in Punjab. I am seeking justice," the minister said. He said he has brought the matter to the notice of Punjab

BJP president Kamal Sharma who has taken it up with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. He said he will also raise the issue with BJP's central leadership and union ministers. The Akali Dal and the BJP have been running an alliance government in Punjab since 2007.

Smuggler nabbed in Punjab, 12 kg heroin seized Chandigarh (IANS): In joint operations, the BSF and Punjab Police Wednesday arrested an international heroin smuggler and seized 12 kg of the narcotic in Ferozepur sector of Punjab, officials said. While the heroin consignment was recovered in the border belt, police arrested the smuggler, Harbant Singh, from Patti town in Tarn Taran district, a police spokesman

said. Ferozepur sector is about 300 km from Chandigarh. The heroin is valued at Rs.60 crore in the international market, the Border Security Force said. "Information was received that top Pakistan drug lord Kalu Chaudhary alias Kalu Chairman is sending a heroin consignment across the international border in Ferozepur sector for further transiting to the national and international market to recipient smuggler Harbant Singh," the police spokesman said. The BSF and Punjab Police laid a trap near the Barreke border outpost along the India-Pakistan border in Fezorepur district from where the heroin consignment was expected to be smuggled into India. A BSF official said movement of Pakistani smugglers was noticed by troopers near the border early Wednesday. The smugglers were challenged which led to a gun battle. The smug-

glers, however, escaped taking advantage of the terrain

and darkness. The BSF has recovered over

39 kg heroin in the Punjab sector this year. In 2014, it

seized over 361 kg heroin, the highest ever in the state.

AAP victory won't impact Facebook grounds fugitive doctor's runaway plans Punjab politics: Badal Ludhiana (IANS): The AAP's victory in the Delhi assembly polls will not impact politics in Punjab in any way, but "people's mandate is supreme and must be respected in a democratic set-up", Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said Tuesday. "AAP's victory is confined to only to the national capital and these political developments will not have impending repercussions on Punjab

politics," Badal told reporters in this industrial city, 110 km from Chandigarh. The Aam Aadmi Party, which had contested many seats in the Lok Sabha polls, was wiped out in many states including Delhi, but had managed to win four Lok Sabha seats in Punjab. However, Badal said the Shiromani Akali Dal would study all factors responsible for the Delhi assembly results.

The Akali Dal and the BJP, who have been running an alliance government in Punjab since 2007, had contested the Delhi assembly polls together. "Despite the fact that the AAP managed to form the government in Delhi in 2013 as well, everyone knows well what happened later. The AAP had also earlier contested the 2014 general elections across the country," Badal said.

All universities, colleges in Punjab to be tobacco free

Chandigarh (IANS): All private and government universities and affiliated colleges in Punjab will be tobacco free zones, a senior health official said Monday. Vini Mahajan, principal secretary, health and family welfare,

asked the vice chancellors of all private and government universities in the state to take steps to declare the institutions tobacco free. Principals of affiliated colleges, government and private, have also been asked to ensure

that the institutions are made tobacco free zones. In a written communique, Mahajan asked them to implement COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003) firmly. She said Punjab was the first state in India to ban the sale of loose cigarettes (as single sticks) to discourage smoking. Mahajan said no shop or outlet selling tobacco should be allowed within 100 metres of any educational institution.

Chandigarh (IANS): Her story could give ideas to script writers. A love affair with a married man, a murder for revenge, a conviction, a fugitive, facial therapy to change appearance, a false identity with forged documents and, finally, a suicide note and a plan to flee India. But her run from the law ended courtesy an unlikely source: Facebook. For Ravdeep Kaur, a gynaecologist from Punjab's Patiala town, the escape plan hatched to start a new life with a new name and in a new country got dashed as Punjab Police nabbed her near the India-Nepal border this week. The police tracked her from Facebook activity. Patiala police officers said they were on Ravdeep's trail after she jumped parole and went missing Dec 15 last year. It wasn't an easy job for the police. To ensure that she was not tracked, Ravdeep did not keep or use any mobile phones. But the police got the better of her after tracking the Facebook (FB) accounts of her acquaintances. It was when Ravdeep, under the assumed name

of Arpita Jain, contacted one of her friends on FB that the police were able to zero down on her. She was arrested this week from the IndiaNepal border in Uttarakhand. The police recovered nearly Rs.13 lakh in cash and gold and diamond jewellery worth over Rs.80 lakh from her possession when she was caught. To hoodwink the police, Ravdeep, while being out on parole in December to attend her father's cremation, left a suicide note and went underground. But the police did not believe her suicide story. "She was staying in a one-room accommodation (in Kashipur) in a poor colony in Uttarakhand. This was done to avoid being noticed and get caught," Patiala district police chief Gurmeet Chauhan said. Ravdeep was arrested and convicted for murder after she hired a granthi (Sikh priest), Manjit

Singh, to kill additional district and sessions judge Vijay Singh in Patiala, 80 km from here, in October 2005. The judge, with whom Ravdeep allegedly had an affair, was brutally killed when he went for an evening walk. He was stabbed at least 25 times with a sharp-edged weapon. She had developed animosity towards the judge after he refused to marry her. Ravdeep, who ran a private nursing home in Patiala, wanted Vijay Singh to divorce his wife and marry her. The judge, who had three daughters, refused. The priest was promised Rs.500,000 by Ravdeep to kill the judge. Ravdeep was convicted for the murder in March 2012. Chauhan said Ravdeep, whenever she came out of prison on parole, collected ID cards against fake names. Police officials said Ravdeep was planning to leave India using fake identity, including a fake voter ID. She got her facial therapy and dental treatment done in Patiala and Chandigarh to change her appearance.

ChaiTime Make home safety a priority this year Check CO alarms – They areyour second line of defense against carbon monoxide leaks and are now mandatory in all Ontario homes. Install one near your sleeping area as well. Take the time to test the CO alarms once a month and change the batteries twice annually when you change your clocks.

(NC) With spring just around the corner, it's time to plan our household to-do lists. Why not put safety first this year? Here are some great ways to get started, courtesy of Enbridge Gas Distribution:

SUDOKU

Book an inspection – In winter months, Ontarians are indoors with windows closed and fuel-burning appliances running, which makes the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure higher, which can be deadly. All fuel-burning equipment, including the furnace and gas fireplaces, should

be inspected once a year by a licensed H e a t i n g , Ve n t i l a t i o n a n d A i r Conditioning (HVAC) contractor to ensure they're working properly.

Clear the meter – Check your natural gas meter, regulator and appliance exhaust vents for snow and ice. If needed, use a broom or car brush to gently clear them. Use caution when

shoveling or using a snow blower to prevent damage. Teach your kids – Make sure everyone in your home knows that a gas leak smells like rotten eggs. All family members should know to leave the area immediately and call your local gas utility. Create a phone list – Post emergency numbers, including the doctor, fire and utilities, by every home phone and program these numbers in every cell phone in case of an emergency.

IAAF pleased with preparation for 2015 Worlds

Beijing (IANS): A senior International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) official Tuesday expressed his satisfaction with the preparations for the 2015 Beijing World Championships Aug 22-30. "With six months to go, the organising committee is nearly ready. All is well prepared. We were having a two-day meeting with the organizing committee and this meeting was very successful," IAAF Council

member and Chairman of IAAF Coordination Committee Helmut Digel was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "The organising committee is having a lot of good ideas. The opening ceremony of our championships will be very special," Digel added. The 2015 IAAF World Championships will be held in Beijing's National Stadium, the first time for the biennial track and field gala to come to China.

Known as the "Bird's Nest", the National Stadium hosted the opening and closing cer-

emonies as well as the athletics events of the 2008 Olympic Games. "We are beginning our

ticket launch at the end of march. And we will have a lot of activities to promote this outstanding event," Digel said. "Usain Bolt himself is going to be our ambassador as well as Yelena Isinbayeva, our famous pole vault hero." The organisers had also selected seven Chinese track and field athletes to work as promotion ambassadors for the event. The list includes 2004 Olympic hurdles champion Liu

Xiang, 2012 Olympic race walking gold medallist Chen Ding as well as the rising long jumper Li Jinzhe, who finished second at the 2013 IAAF World Indoor Championships. "To summarise, we are perfectly in time and the organising committee is really working professionally. We believe these World Championships are going to be our biggest success," Digel added.

I thought of quitting cricket in 2007: Tendulkar New Delhi (IANS): Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar Wednesday revealed he was so heartbroken by India's first round exit in 2007 World Cup that he thought of retiring from cricket. India, including Tendulkar, fared miserably against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the group stage of the One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, held in the West Indies. They managed only a win in the group stage, against minnows Bermuda, to crash out of the tournament. The "Master Blaster" faced severe criticism for scoring seven and a duck in the crucial matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, respectively. In an interview to Headlines Today, Tendulkar said he had come close to retiring from cricket in 2007 but was persuaded against it by his elder brother Ajit. His brother told him to continue

playing to achieve his dream of winning the World Cup in 2011 in India. “I still remember (after) 2007 (World Cup) when I came back home, I was so depressed and so upset with the way we had performed. I actually thought of retiring then. I called my brother over, Ajit, and told him that I do not want to continue," Tendulkar said.

"The game has been cruel to us and I want to stop. That was when he said, ‘can you imagine in 2011 you are here at Wankhede stadium holding that beautiful trophy. That is when you should think of retiring’. That conversation really helped and it motivated me to go out and play with a purpose,” the Mumbai-born cricketer said. Four years later, India managed to beat Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai to realise Tendulkar's dream. The 41-year-old, who scored 100 international hundreds in a career spanning 24 years, admitted he was superstitious throughout the tournament, stopping himself as well as his opening partner Virender Sehwag from stepping out of the dressing room during matches. He also barred himself from watching television during the

final as, "one can make out what is happening in the stadium by the crowds response". "I did cry when I went out in the middle after the victory. I did cry. This was the only time I had happy tears. Because that moment was just a priceless moment. That moment was something that you can only dream off." Giving credit to the entire team for a solid performance in the World Cup 2011, the batting maestro said: “Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, they were all fired up for the tournament,” he said. The former batsman recalled how the Indian team had progressed since their disastrous 2007 World Cup campaign to becoming the World No.1 team in Tests. "We had started playing really

good cricket and wanted to take that momentum into the World Cup and we finished really well," the Rajya Sabha member said. Talking about matches against Pakistan, Tendulkar admitted playing the traditional put additional pressure on the team. "It is a different atmosphere altogether. A game with Pakistan is not about pressure only on that day. In 2003, when we had to play Pakistan at Centurion, my friends had started talking about it a good 10 months ago. And they wanted us to win that match. Of course, we do not think that way." Recalling his fondest Cup memory, Tendulkar said nothing came close to that moment when he lifted the World Cup in his hands. "It was not my trophy, it was our trophy, it was the nation's trophy," he concluded.

Pakistan to ban all organisations on UN blacklist Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan's Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said Wednesday the government will ensure that all proscribed organisations mentioned in the UN's blacklist are banned within the next few days, media reported. "There is some confusion regarding the list of banned outfits but I want to make it clear that the

government will ban all proscribed organisations mentioned in the blacklist of the United Nations, as Pakistan is a signatory of the UN," Dawn online quoted the minister as saying in the National Assembly Wednesday. Nisar underscored that the government would not ban an organisation under pressure from any country, including the US and

India. He, however, said Pakistan would fulfil its obligations as a signatory of the UN. "According to the procedure, the ministry of foreign affairs writes to the ministry of interior to put a ban on an organisation after the UN announcement to include such proscribed organisations in the blacklist," the minister added.

A day before, the minister had directed Secretary Interior Shahid Khan to coordinate with the ministry of foreign affairs to reconcile a "national list" of proscribed organisations according to the UN blacklist. He said that the government had launched an operation against militants June 16 last year -- following the Karachi airport

attack by militants that left at least 32 people dead -- with the backing of all political parties present in Parliament. The minister also said that military courts were set up by the government after the support of all parliamentary parties in the wake of the Peshawar school attack Dec 16 that left over 140 students and staff dead.

Over 500 security operations since peace talks stalled in Pakistan

Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Wednesday said over 500 operations have been carried out against militants with the help of intelligence agencies since

the peace talks with terrorists stalled in June last year, media reported. Addressing the National Assembly Wednesday, the minister said a number of

extremely nefarious plans have been foiled, Geo News reported. Had the terrorists succeeded, the consequences for the country would have been disas-

trous, the minister added. He went on to say that the country was confronting the challenge of terrorism since 13 years and initially the government tried to negotiate through peace talks with the terrorists, but was responded to by attacks. The minister also said that the lack of a positive response led to extensive operations. He further added that there has been a significant decrease in terrorist attacks and that most of the terrorists' leadership has now fled Pakistan across the borders. Only terrorists who stood up against the country and refused to disarm themselves would be tried in military courts while the rest of the cases relating to terrorism would be sent to civilian courts, the minister explained. He also made clear that no organisation would be included in the banned outfit list on the behest of the US or India. Islamabad (IANS): Any foreign funding by individuals or organisations to private entities in Pakistan through informal channels, irrespective of the source or country, is being brought under tighter scrutiny in the National Action Plan (NAP) against terrorism, media reported. "The purpose of bringing such funding under tighter scrutiny is to rule out any possibility of financing terrorists or terrorist organisations," said foreign office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam, Dawn reported. She was responding to a statement issued by the Saudi embassy in Islamabad Monday which denied funding of what it called the extremist mindset through its financial support of religious seminaries in Pakistan. "A section of the media has been propagating a false impression that Saudi Arabia is funding the extremist mindset in Pakistan through its financial support for religious seminaries," a press statement issued by the Saudi embassy had said. Aslam said Saudi Arabia had been making important contributions to Pakistan's economic development. She further said that offers of economic assistance and project-based assistance by Saudi Arabia were processed by the Pakistan foreign ministry in consultation with relevant departments and agencies of the federal government.

Saturday. “Excited to see all the fans on 14th. Having a big launch and we are all set to shoot from 16th. Vinayak garu is very confident and so am I (sic),” tweeted Akhil. Sayesha has already been signed for Ajay Devgn’s upcoming home production “Shivaay”. (IANS)

Varun Dhawan to try 'new stuff' in every film

Varun Dhawan, who is being appreciated for his aggressive and rugged look in soon-to-release "Badlapur", plans to try new things in every film in the future. "I have some big plans, but I don't want to talk about them right now. The idea is to do new stuff with every film," Varun said here Monday during a road show to promote "Badlapur". "After this film, I have a film ('ABCD 2') which is shot in 3D. The idea is to

give the audience something exciting with every

film and not the same thing so that they feel there is a new form of entertainment," he added. So far, the 27-year-old has been seen in romantic and light-hearted roles, but in "Badlapur", a dark intense drama, Varun will be seen as an aggressive man on a mission of revenge. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, "Badlapur" is slated to release Feb 20. (IANS)

THE 'will she' or 'won't she' questions on Raveena Tandon's appearance in “Bombay Velvet” has for long been around. Setting the record straight, the actress says she is a part of the film. The actress took to micro-blogging site Twitter to clear the air around her appearance in Anurag Kashyap's directorial, lauding its storyline and music. “Too much hype around my appearance in the film,I have done it for fun and only because I love the film and the music of 'Bombay Velvet',” she tweeted. The actress also said that she never denied being a part of the movie, but was unclear whether she will appear after film's editing. “When asked all the time about it, all I said was 'I don't know if I will be there also or no in the final edit as film is in the editing stage'. “Didnt think so many stories wld come out of 1statement, lot of Twitter friends askd me, thought shld let d noise die down say this for once,” she further

tweeted. “Bombay Velvet" is jointly produced by Phantom Films and Fox Star India, and is a large screen adaptation of Gyan Prakash's "Mumbai Fables". It stars Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar and Anushka Sharma. (IANS)

Rohit Roy wants some action with brother IT seems Rohit Roy is awaiting to be cast with his brother Ronit Roy in the same frame! “Maybe someone should cast the Roy brothers as cops in the same film...What say @RonitBoseRoy,” Rohit tweeted. His elder brother Ronit, a successful film and TV actor, impressed with his act as a strict police officer in "Ugly", while Rohit himself was seen as an

inspector in a crime-based TV show "Encounter". (IANS)

Two Indians win honours at Grammy Awards TWO Indians -- Ricky Kej and Neela Vaswani -- took home a Grammy Award each at the 57th edition of the musical extravaganza held here Sunday night. The latter's narration of the audio of the book "I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up For Education And Changed The World" won her the trophy. Vaswani, who stays in New York, bagged a Grammy in the Best Children's Album category for recreating Pakistan's Nobel laureate Yousufzai's book in audio form. It reaches out to tell a tale of a brave teenaged girl who risked her life for the right to go to school.

The story relates Malala's bravery and determination in the face of extremism, detailing the daily challenges of growing up in a world transformed by terror. Meanwhile, Bangalore-based Kej's "Winds Of Samsara" won the Best New Age Album trophy. For "Winds of Samsara", which symbolises peace and harmony, Kej teamed up with South African musician Wouter Kellerman. The website of their album describes the project as a "truly global effort", which draws inspiration from two cultures.

This year, Anoushka Shankar, Indian sitarist and daughter of late sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, missed a Grammy gong. She was nominated for her album "Traces of You" in the Best

World Music Album category. She lost to Angelique Kidjo's album "Eve". The Grammy Awards were dominated this year by Sam Smith and Pharrell Williams,

and saw a string of performances by popular names, adding to the glitz and glamour of the annual gala. Music maestro A.R. Rahman, who bagged two Grammys in 2010, congratulated Kej. “Congrats on the Grammy win Ricky Kej. You have proved yet again that music is a credible choice, no matter where you are born...Wishing you the best,” Rahman, who won two awards at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony for his composition in Danny Boyle's rags-to-riches film “Slumdog Millionaire”, tweeted Tuesday. Ranbir doesn't shy away Newly-wed Kunal Kapoor from risks: Vikramjit Singh thanks all for wishes

"ROY" needed a "character" and not a "lead actor", says its director Vikramjit Singh, who feels that Ranbir Kapoor fit the bill for it due to his risk-taking ability.

Singh told IANS: "When you write a film, you have a wish list of actors ready. The role in 'Roy' is not a typical lead role. It's a character. I have seen Ranbir's work. He doesn't shy away from taking risks. "We have seen him doing a film like 'Barfi!' in which he didn't have any dialogue. Also, his vision is different. He had faith in the film, and so he said yes to 'Roy'." "Roy" also features Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez. And while the duo has been promoting the film widely ahead of its release Feb 13, Ranbir has been missing from the scene so far. Singh says it was a strategy. The director also clarified that "Roy" is not a full-fledged Ranbir Kapoor movie. (IANS)

"RANG De Basanti" actor Kunal Kapoor, who tied the knot with his longtime ladylove Naina Bachchan in the idyllic Seychelles, has acknowledged good wishes and congratulatory messages on his wedding. "Thank you for all your warm wishes on our wedding," Kunal tweeted along with an image of a scenic wedding set-up on a beach. Kunal and Naina, who is megastar Amitabh Bachchan's neice, chose to get married Monday in an intimate beach ceremony on an island in Seychelles with only their immediate families present. "Kunal has always been known to do things his own way and a quiet wedding falls right in line," said a source.

The duo was reportedly introduced to each other by Naina's cousin Shweta Bachchan Nanda. It is believed that the couple plans to host a reception soon in the capital, where Naina's parents live. (IANS)

MOVIE REVIEW

The Boy Next Door (PG) ***

Obsession rears its ugly head (and then some) in the unlikely yet effective The Boy Next Door. Hall of fame horror studio Universal shelves it's classic monsters for a newer (though not necessarily improved ) version now delighting thrill seekers at Cineplex Odeon arenas around B.C. Perhaps more suitable for the gloomy Halloween witching season or even Valentines's Day (just kidding) this dark tinged thriller laced with sex and a range of offbeat situations revolves around a disjointed family and a new neighbour. Down on their ropes but not necessarily out are the Petersons.

Bad boy head of the house Garrett is not exactly husband of the year material and is well "covered" by John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). Working wife Claire does her best to make ends meet and is played with charm and innocence by Jennifer Lopez (Selena). Big mistake. Despite the best of intentions in raising high school son Kevin being a teenager poses problems. High school memories and the trauma of being somewhat of a spaz and outcast are well presented by Ian Nelson who seems sort of lost. When a new "kid" moves in next door it sets

off a chain of events that impact mighty heavily on the Petersons extending even out to their friends. On the surface young Noah Sandburn seems like a dream friend and helper. Polite and ever ready to lend a hand is Ryan Guzman. Oh, and he's also rather strong, sturdy and handsome. Call him a hunk on the move. And on the make. Being beautiful can have its setbacks. Before you can say Welcome Wagon our hot to trot hotblooded boy next door decides to make his relationship with the Mrs. just a bit more than "neighbourly". What should have been an innocent "moment" turns into a time of terror as a very uneasy situation takes on a life of its own. Director Rob Cohen knows his way around the thriller genre and though some of the set ups here are a bit predictable and at times some situations are preposterous the driving force of an obsession is believable and engaging. Solid acting on all fronts and a genuine air of excitement and foreboding doom and gloom turning to terror make The Boy Next Door a feverishly fun time at the movies sure to race hearts and sweat palms.

'AAP aaye bahaar aayi': B-Town celebrates Kejriwal's win THE Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Bollywood star power was at its jubiliant best Tuesday on Twitter to celebrate the party's landslide victory in the Delhi assembly polls. "This is what happens when crooked, powerful politicians challenge a common man. She had decided to promote AAP because “Arvind Kejriwal has the

capability to deliver". "AAP is people friendly. AAP is the change which India needs today. People are hoping that the party will take some big actions on issues like women security and corruption. People needed one party which thinks like the common man and AAP does the same," she had

body against colon, breast, stomach, lung, and prostate cancer. It has also been shown to help lower cholesterol levels by working with bile acids in the digestive process to remove cholesterol from the blood. Red cabbage is an ideal

food for a healthy digestive tract as it is known to help reduce bad bacteria and promote good friendly bacteria (such as acidophilus) in the gut. Red cabbage is particularly beneficial for the nervous system and has even been shown to help

reduce buildup of plaque in the brain that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. It is also an excellent food for ulcers, osteoporosis, constipation, heart dis-

ease, candida, age related macular degeneration, fibromyalgia, dementia, and weight loss. Red cabbage is also great for boosting the immune sys-

Red cabbage is highly beneficial when eaten raw or juiced and can be a delicious addition to salads, wraps, nori rolls, and variety of vegetable juice recipes. If you prefer red cabbage cooked, consider eating it lightly steamed or adding it to your homemade soups or stews for more nutritional benefits. Red cabbage pairs well with apples, scallions, ginger, and/or sesame seeds. Red cabbage can be readily found at your local grocery and health food store.

'Jazbaa' my dream Bollywood debut: Priya Banerjee ACTRESS Priya Banerjee, who has starred in Telugu films like "Kissa and "Joru", says landing a role in Sanjay Gupta's "Jazbaa" is her dream Bollywood debut. The film also marks Aishwarya Bachchan's comeback. "Sanjay had seen my previous work through a video on Twitter. He liked it and asked his casting director to find out who I was and eventually I was signed on. I couldn't have asked for a better start in Bollywood. This is my dream debut," Priya told IANS. "It's a dream project because I'm getting to act alongside several popular actors at the beginning of my career,"

she said. Priya was aware "Jazbaa" is Aishwarya's comeback film and that made her really excited as well as nervous to be part of the project. "When I was approached for the project, I knew Aishwarya was part of it. When Sanjay narrated the synopsis, that's when I came to know Irrfan Khan and Shabana Azmi are also part of the project. I was quite excited and equally nervous," she said. "I'm just a newcomer and to act alongside such talented and legendary actors does add lot of pressure. There's lot of expectations on me now and I have to perform to prove myself. It's

a do or die situation," she added. In the film, Priya plays Shabana Azmi's daughter. Priya, who started shooting Tuesday, says she was not apprehensive about getting lost in an ensemble cast. "I was aware I was being cast with powerhouse performers but since the story revolves

India’s ‘The Lunchbox’ loses to Polish film at BAFTA

The list of winners for the 68th edition of the annual gala was announced on the official website of the British

Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards. Indian actress Nimrat Kaur, the leading lady of “The Lunchbox” — a unique love story of a lovelorn wife and a lonely man — was seen on the red carpet in a pink gown. “The Lunchbox”, which also stars actor Irrfan Khan, is a Ritesh Batra directorial. In the foreign film category of the BAFTA Awards, it was

around my character, I was never worried about not getting my due share of performance. I don't think audiences will forget my role," she said. "Most of my scenes are with Shabana (Azmi) ma'am and I'm sure I won't go unnoticed," she said. The film also features Anupam Kher, Atul Kulkarni, Chandan Roy

Sanyal and John Abraham in a cameo. Priya, who's a student of Kher's acting school Actor Prepares, is conscious of acting alongside the veteran. "Being his student, I have to act responsibly because he's also part of the film. I can already feel the pressure because he's my mentor but I'm sure I won't disappoint him," she said. Priya may have featured in a few Telugu films but she says the experience would definitely come in handy in Bollywood. "You have to start every film afresh, regardless of the language. My experience of facing the camera in a Telugu film will

definitely help me. All the technicality of filmmaking I've learnt from Telugu filmdom will prepare me for this big project," she said. Born and brought up in Canada, Priya says her Hindi isn't bad. "The first question Shabana maam asked me was whether I know Hindi after she learnt I'm from Canada. My Hindi is quite good and she was taken aback when I started speaking in the language," said Priya, who considers "Jazbaa" her acid test in Bollywood. "I hope this project opens more doors for me in Hindi industry," added the actress, who has Telugu film "Asura" up her sleeve. (IANS)

'Udta Punjab' my scariest ever: Shahid Kapoor AFTER garnering plaudits for his performance in “Haider”, actor Shahid Kapoor says his next project "Udta Punjab" is turning out to be his "scariest part" ever. The 33-year-old took to micro-blogging site Twitter to share his apprehensions over his character in the film and posted a link of script's photo-

graph. “Scariest part I have played yet have no clue how I'm going to get it right. Wish me luck guys,” he tweeted. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the film will reunite actress Kareena Kapoor and Shahid after their break-up in 2007. The film also features Alia Bhatt.

Shahid and Kareena dated for more than four years. Together, they worked in films like "Fida", "36 China Town", "Milenge Milenge" and "Chup Chup Ke", out of which most of them fizzled out at the box-office. Imtiaz Ali's "Jab We Met" was the only movie that turned out to be a runaway success. (IANS)

Doctor claims 2008 Olympic champion Wanjiru was murdered Nairobi (IANS): An inquest into the controversial death of 2008 Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru has revealed that the athlete was possibly murdered and did not commit suicide as the police had claimed in the aftermath of his shocking death May 15, 2011. Former government chief pathologist Moses Njue told the Nairobi chief

magistrate Wednesday that it was not possible for the deceased to have fallen from his 14-feet high balcony at home and sustain the head injury from which he died, reports Xinhua. While giving the postmortem report, the doctor explained that Wanjiru was hit by a blunt object on the head before he died. "Given the height of the

deceased and where he fell from was not enough to generate momentum to kill him," the former state pathologist told the court. He added that injuries sustained by Wanjiru on his knees and palms could only mean that he could not have sustained the intense head injuries. "I am convinced that the deceased was hit by another person after he fell on the ground," he tes-

tified. The government ordered an inquiry into Wanjiru's death after three different post-mortems conducted after his death came up with different results. Dismissing the suicide theory, Njue said the height associated with deaths from a fall is 30 feet or more and Wanjiru's death could have occurred from approxi-

mately a distance of 18 feet. The state has lined up about 30 witnesses to shed light on circumstances that led to Wanjiru's death with his mother, Hannah Wanjiru, and spouse Trizah Njeri among those who will take the stand at the inquest that has been delayed by a three-year tussle over its venue. Hannah moved the

court to press for an investigation into the death of her son, insisting that he was killed. The court started hearing evidence February last year after she and his in-laws bickered over a suitable venue for the inquest. The late marathon star became the first Kenyan to win an Olympic marathon gold medal in the Beijing Games.

Do batsmen put personal milestones before team? Mumbai to host Ranji Melbourne (IANS): Batsmen who were close to reaching personal milestones were likely to alter their strategy in a way which, at first sight, seems detrimental to the team, new research suggests. "We found clear evidence that the behaviour of batsmen is affected by their personal rewards in the game," said Professor Lionel Page from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) who collected data on more than 3,500 one-day matches between 1971 and 2014. Professor Page and researcher Romain Gauriot from QUT business school examined the behaviour of batsmen reaching landmark scores in ODI matches. The research found that players were likely to bat

more conservatively as they approached a halfcentury or century to maximise their chances of reaching it. "We found players react to individual-specific incentives in ways which can be detrimental to the team as a whole. For example, if a batsman is close to making 50 or 100, he will play more conservatively and hence score at a slower rate," Page added. This increases his chances of reaching the landmark score, but at the cost of the team's winning chances. "That is because in ODIs, batsmen should adopt a relatively high strike rate, taking the risk of losing their wicket to score more quickly," Page pointed out. Contrary to the belief when batsmen reach the

"nervous nineties" - the idea they are more likely to be dismissed as they approach a century - the researchers found adopting a conservative style at that stage reduced their chances of dismissal. "We observed that while batsmen are conservative on their way to a milestone, they switch to a more aggressive strategy straight after reaching it, possibly to catch up with lost time," the authors noted. The data showed the batsmen's strike rate jumped more than 40 percent after reaching a century compared to the period leading up to it. "This leads to a sharp increase in the rate of dismissals," they wrote. Analysing more than 2,000 Test matches from

1880-2014, professor Page found captains were far more likely to declare an innings when a batsman had reached a landmark rather than when he was just below one. "One of the most interesting finding from this study shows that team captains also react to individual-specific incentives by accommodating them," he said. The evidence suggests that team captains are willing to trade a cost to the team in favour of a substantial reward to a particular player - for example eating up valuable time and delaying a declaration so a batsman can reach his individual milestone. The research is forthcoming in the journal American Economic Review.

Pakistan likely sheltered Osama: Ex-ISI chief Islamabad (IANS): A former Pakisani spy chief has said that the government is likely to have sheltered slain terror mastermind Osama bin Laden and handed him over to the US as part of a

deal. "I cannot say exactly what happened but... it is quite possible that they (the ISI) did not know, but it was more probable that they did," Al Jazeera quoted Lt. Gen. Asad Durrani

Pakistan's garrison town of Abbottabad in May, 2011. Officially, the ISI maintains that it did not harbour bin Laden and played no part in the US raid. Durrani told Al Jazeera that he doubted the official line given by the ISI that it was unaware of the Al Qaeda leader's whereabouts until his death, implying that Pakistan would only have exchanged knowledge of his location in a quid pro quo deal. Durrani, who served as director general of the ISI from 1990 to 1992, asserted that bin Laden was handed over in exchange for an agreement on "how to bring the Afghan prob-

lem to an end". Asked whether bin Laden's compound was an ISI safehouse, Durrani responded: "If ISI was doing that, then I would say they were doing a good job. And if they revealed his location, they again probably did what was required to be done." Commentators have questioned how bin Laden could have eluded the ISI in the years leading up to his killing, given the location of his compound in a garrison town. According to the US, the raid on bin Laden's compound was deliberately conducted without the knowledge of the Pakistani government or its military.

The Abbottabad Commission, which was set up by Pakistan to investigate the circumstances surrounding the raid, charged the military and the government with "gross incompetence" leading to "collective failures" that enabled bin Laden to reside in Pakistan unnoticed. The ISI had previously helped the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) detain a number of highranking suspects, including Ramzi Yousef, one of the men who planned the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing in New York, and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, one of the alleged masterminds of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington.

Pakistan PM seeks early completion of trans-Afghan gas pipeline Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday called for early completion of a trans-Afghan gas pipeline that will import natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India. The prime minister presided over a ministerial-level meeting on the 1,680-km TurkmenistanA f g h a n i s t a n - Pa k i s t a n -

India (TAPI) gas pipeline project in Islamabad, Xinhua news agency reported. The estimated cost of the project was nearly $7.6 billion. Sharif said the states concerned should take all steps necessary to start the project as soon as possible as its cost would continue to increase as time passed. "We have pinned lots of

hopes with this project and want it completed as soon as possible," the prime minister said. The gas pipeline project will supply 3.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas annually from Turkmenistan for Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. Officials from A f g h a n i s t a n , Turkmenistan and India attended the meeting.

2015 Honda Pilot Touring – All the space and feature you could want in an SUV By Autoreviewman The venerable Honda Pilot SUV has been around a while and has proven to be very popular. It does not offer a V8 engine, but still manages to seat eight people and is relatively fuel efficient with it’s triedand tested 3.5L V6 engine developing 250 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, it includes cylinder deactivation for saving fuel under light loads, and a 5-speed automatic is the sole transmission. However All- Wheel Drive system is an option. The Pilot lineup comprises five – feature packed models starting with the LX model. Our tester was the Touring model builds on the EX-L model: 18 inch six spoke alloy wheel and 235/60/R18 tires, Bluetooth connectivity, trailer connection wiring, front and rear parking sensors, power tailgate, 115-volt outlet, navigation system, rearview 5GB hard drive, subwoofer and 5.1 surround system theatre

mode, USB connection, Honda Satellite Nav system with trilingual voice recognition, illuminated steering wheel controls, 18-inch chrome alloy wheels, chrome body, body colored side mirrors and parking sensors, side moldings and heated secondrow outboard seats. Our tester was the mid- range SE 4WD

Model priced at $42,500 plus $1995 freight and PDI A major interior advantage of the 2015 Honda Pilot is that it can accommodate up to eight passengers despite being classed as a mid-size SUV. Inside, the Pilot feels a lot larger than its competitors, but it's mostly due to its squared off design and eight-occupant capability. You can thank the high square cabin that also allows 589 litres of cargo space when all seats are occupied. Fold down both rows in the Honda Pilot and you get 2,464 litres of cargo volume. The Pilot cabin is roomy, well finished and of a high quality both ergonomically and in terms of materials. The Pilot's second-row is very

GET CAPTURED BY CHANDRA

accommodating too, and the third row is actually big enough for adults. Its 60/40-split seatbacks fold completely flat into the cargo floor, creating 589 litres of capacity. The second row is split 60/40 too, and also lies completely flat. Fold all the seatbacks down and it makes for a cavernous cargo hold. I actually like the handsome old – school upright styling, roomy square dimensions and excellent visibility, the square rear hatch makes it easy to unload and load cargo and it is a very practical SUV. On the road the Honda Pilot’s V6 engine offer plenty of torque and does not seem stressed. Even with a full load the Pilot sings along quietly on the highway. It handles well and its tight turning radius is a boon in

crowded parking lots. The allwheel drive system in the 2014 Honda Pilot is front-wheel biased; when a loss of traction is detected, engine power is sent to the back wheels. Note that the AWD system is used mainly for powering the front wheels to save fuel, but during acceleration, or in case of wheel slippage detection or when manual lock mode is used at speeds below 30 km/h, the rear wheels engage. Noteworthy is the fact the Pilot uses a 3.5-litre V6 engine that uses Variable Cylinder management (VCM) to run in six-, three- or four-cylinder mode, depending on the power application needed for increased fuel efficiency. Speaking of which- fuel consumption figures for the Front wheel drive model is City: 11.8 L/100 km and Hwy: 7.8 L/100 km. For the All- Wheel Drive model it is City: 12.3 L/100 Hwy: 8.2 L/100 km. In summing up the 2015 Honda’s renowned engineering excellence and quality combine to produce a practical and versatile threerow, eight-passenger family SUV It remains a class leader for many reasons. 2015 Honda Pilot base priced from $35,100 Prices tested Honda Pilot SE AWD - $42,500 plus freight and PDI.

All-new 2015 Chrysler 200S AWD: Italian Flair and All-American features By Autoreviewman The 2015 Chrysler 200 debuts a beautiful exterior design featuring the new “face” of the Chrysler brand. The 200 is a sleek, Euro styled sedan with an exquisitely crafted interior. New for 2015 is a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission and an Alfa Romeobased chassis. With the choice of two world-class engines, an innovative all-wheel-drive system, available sport mode and paddle shifters the all-new Chrysler 200 is a pleasing, fun to drive car. The base engine for the Chrysler 200 is a 2.4-litre Fiat sourced MultiAir 2 Tigershark inline four-cylinder with 184 hp and 173 lb/ft of torque. The bigger engine is the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with 295-horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Our tester was a Vivid Blue Pearl painted 200S AWD sedan and had a base price of $31,495

acceleration and response and help with achieving impressive fuel economy features. The S (Sport) model offers steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and is activated in. Sport

The interior of the 200S is extremely impressive, with a smart, integrated, very polished look. The quality of the plastics, interior trim, buttons, knobs and switches just seem to get better with Chrysler now. The seats are attractive cloth bottomed, leather backed numbers with the ‘S’ logo embroidered on the backrests. They offer good thigh and lum-

bar support. The drivers- seat is power operated on the S. The dash is also very cool with stunning blue liquid lighting background for the major instrument and fuel gauge and highly legible readouts. The big control buttons and knobs are ergonomically excellent. The big screen atop the center stack also controls audio, HVAC and the heated seats and steering wheel. It also doubles as the screen for the rear reversing camera. The voice-activated Garmin-based nav system, like everything else is easy to figure out and use. Most impressive is the transmission shift-lever has been replaced by an elegant rotary knob. No clunky, space eating gear shift here! Talking of space, there are tons of little

cubbyholes, pockets and compartments for all kind of everyday items. The rear cabin is equally well finished and seat legroom is decent, but headroom is slightly compromised due to the sloping roofline. The trunk is big, well finished and has a low lift over for heavy items. With a chassis based on a European Alfa Romeo, there are some European traits on the road – all good I am happy to report with a firm, yet comfortable ride and exemplary handling. The test vehicle was a line-topping S AWD model with the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. With 295-horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque it is one the most powerful engines in this sector. The new nine-speed, ZF transmission is excellent. The extra gear rations help in

Safety is very high on the 200S. In mid 2014- The US based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) t named the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 mid-size sedan a 2014 Top Safety Pick +, its highest rating, when equipped with front crash prevention. To sum up the new Chrysler 200 is an extremely impressive sedan in the very competitive family-class segment. With a starting Canadian Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of just $22,495, the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 is a sedan that customers will be proud to own, at a value they will appreciate. The S model in particular with All Wheel Drive offers a blend of comfort sport and all weather traction in a competitive package. The options in our tester also show how much luxury, technology, convenience and safety can make a big difference to the driving experience. Very impressive and highly recommended. 2015 Chrysler 200S AWD Price as tested: base, $31,495; as tested, $38,815, including freight

Road Test: 2015 Volkswagen Passat CC 2.0T: Premium Quality in this sweet- looking sedan By Autoreviewman The slinky, Volkswagen Passat CC is coupe like fourdoor sedan that has a few changes FOR 2015; namely, upgraded 18-inch wheels and Bi-Xenon headlamps and LED Daytime Driving Lights. The Park distance control replaced a rearview camera in the Technology Package a while ago, but otherwise the CC continues on with its 2.0litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, mated to a sixspeed manual transmission or optional six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) in Sportline or Highline trim. Engine wise, the four cylinder unit generates 200 horsepower at 5,100 to 6,000 rpm and 207 foot-pounds of torque at 1,500 to 5,000 rpm, driving the front wheels. There are three trim levels of the CC available for 2015: Sportline,

Highline and Execline. Our tester was the 2014 Highline edition 2.0 liter 200 hp Turbo engined version with: a six speed DSG Tiptronic transmission, 18 inch ‘Interlagos Kent’ alloy wheels, chrome body moldings, exterior trim on the grille and around the windows, brushed dark alu-

minum interior trim, dualzone automatic climate control, heated two tone leather sport seats, 12-way power passenger seat, driver’s side memory, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, garage door opener, and panorama vent sunroof and power rear sunshade. KESSY keyless access. Also on our lovely Tungsten Silver Metallic painted tester was the additional Technology package option ($2600), which adds navigation, a 30-gigabyte hard drive, a side-assist lane change assistant and a Dynaudio 600watt surround sound system with 10 speakers. Total price of our tester with options came to $44,975 plus $1,395 for freight and PDI and $100 AC Exile tax. The interior of the CC is typically Volkswagen; smart,

grown up, slightly conservative, but oh so tasteful with comfortable leather seats, fine detailing and stellar quality to the fit and finish. Softtouch materials abound and the overall interior design is very polished. Our two- tone Desert beige and Nappa cream and dark trimmed interior looked fantastic! Front cabin room is good, however the CC’s lowsweeping like a coupe profile does compromise headroom for taller rear passengers. On the road the CC behaves with aplomb taking on challenging corners and tight turns with tenacious grip and confidence thanks to its sport suspension. The smooth and torquey 2.0-liter four-cylinder delivers a crisp 200 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 207 pound-feet

of torque starting from 1800 rpm. with the optional 6speed, DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) automatic transmission. But rest assured the DSG transmission is lightening quick and the manual mode makes easy work of putting the impressive horsepower out to the asphalt via two driving programs: normal mode and sport mode. One advantage of the compact wheel base is the CC’s responsive to steering inputs. The light electronic power steering system is tuned for less steering effort, but is not slack or overly light by any means. In summing up the 2.0 Turbo edition is lighter, handles better and offer better fuel economy than the V6 powered version, but still offers the same thrills. It perhaps sacrifices faster off the line acceleration and higher speed for a more efficient package. With fuel price rising all the time. I think this something to consider. There is much to like about the Volkswagen CC. It is comfortable, neat, and very stylish with its unique looks, and makes for a satisfying car to own and drive for many years 2015 Volkswagen CC 2.0T Highline priced from $37,450. Price as tested
