New Delhi (IANS): Arya Samaj leader Swami Agnivesh Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on the issue of religious conversions and reassert his agenda of development and said Hindu chauvinists "should fix their own backyard" before inviting people back home as part of their 'ghar wapasi' movement. Swami Agnivesh said that Hindu rightwing groups' determination to make Muslims and Christians embrace Hindu religion was costing the government its credibility. "Sooner or later, Modiji must speak out against such elements (who advocate religious conversion) ... not just distance (himself) but totally disassociate himself from such fringe elements," he said. "Any attempt to dilute his message of development will be doing a permanent damage to the union government's credibility and Modi's personal image as well," Agnivesh told IANS in an interview. The 75-year old, saffron-robed and turbaned rights activist called on Hindu groups fix their own house in order before inviting members of other communities "home" in the campaign called "ghar waapsi" (homecoming). "These very forces which were lying a bit dormant now feel they can flex their muscles with Modi at the helm

because he himself was a Sangh (RSS) Pracharak. But ... Modi himself is feeling very uncomfortable with the shenanigans of the Hindu brigade promoting 'ghar waapsi'." He said that contrary to the view held by outfits like Vishwa Hindu Parishad that Hindus had been forced to embrace Islam or Christianity, the overwhelming majority was not deceitfully forced to renounce Hinduism. The oppressive Hindu caste system was one key reason that drove many out of the Hindu fold, he said. "An overwhelming majority of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains and others came from the ranks of the lowliest castes who were despised and humiliated," Agnivesh said. "Despite their allegiance to the Hindu faith, they were never given an equal status. "That was the reason why almost 70 percent of those converted (to other religions) were either Dalits or came from other backward background." So Agnivesh asked the advocates of conversion to "come out with a clear action plan to undo atrocities committed by the caste system" before asking people to embrace Hindu faith. "Where is the ghar (home)? A ghar means a family like situation where everybody is equal and the weakest and the youngest child gets all the more preference in everything. That should be the idea of a ghar. "So fix your own backyard first and then invite people back home," he added.

Lakhvi detained in new case; Indian parties seek action in 26/11 Islamabad / New Delhi (IANS): Mumbai terror attack's alleged mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was sent by a Pakistani court to two-day judicial remand in an fresh case Tuesday, a day after India strongly raised concerns over his imminent release. Indian political parties and foreign policy observers however expressed dissatisfaction with Pakistan authorities slapping an abduction case against Lakhvi and termed it an eyewash. They said he should be prosecuted in the Mumbai terror attack case. Lakhvi was detained late Monday after he was booked in the abduction case, media reports said Tuesday. He was produced in a court in Islamabad and the prosecutor sought seven days judicial custody, which was not acceded to by the judge who remanded Lakhvi to two days judicial custody, Geo TV reported.

Lakhvi was said to be involved in the abduction of a man named Anwar, Dawn online said. Lakhvi was arrested in February 2009 for masterminding the 2008 Mumbai terror attack that left 166 people dead. He was indicted with six others Nov 25, 2009 on the basis of the confessional statement of the lone surviving attacker Ajmal Kasab, who was executed in India Nov 21, 2012. A fresh FIR was lodged Monday night against Lakhvi for his involvement in the abduction case. Lakhvi was arrested by the police and taken into protective custody at the Shalimar police station in Lahore as there was no suitable place to accommodate him at the Golra police station in Islamabad. The new FIR was lodged after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Monday suspended Lakhvi's detention order that was issued by the Islamabad district

administration soon after an anti-terrorism court (ATC) granted him bail Dec 18. India had Monday summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit to convey its "strong concern" over lack of effective action in case and said there appeared no end to that country remaining a safe haven for terror groups despite its own recent tragedies. Rajiv Dogra, former ambassador and India's last consul general in Karachi, said that Lakhvi getting sent to two days judicial custody was no consolation to India. "India had wanted justice to be done and sentencing to be formally given to an accused who is responsible for the Mumbai terror attack. Instead, Pakistan has played a trick by booking him in an entirely irrelevant case from India's point of view," Dogra told IANS. He said that whether Lakhvi was given a sentence in the

fresh case does not make much difference to India's concerns on 26/11. "So, this is just an eyewash by Pakistan to cool down feelings in India temporarily and to carry on with business as usual," he said. Former Indian Indian high commissioner to Pakistan G. Parthasarthy said that Lakhvi's remand in an abduction case was of "no matter to us" and India wants action against him in the Mumbai terror attack. He said that Pakistan was supposed to have challenged the court order concerning his trial in Mumbai attack case. Noting the lower court had commented that the case filed against Lakhvi did not bear scrutiny, Parthasarthy said Pakistan authorities had "deliberately not provided full evidence (against Lakhvi) including that gathered by the judicial commission and the David Headley trial proceedings". The former diplomat said he

was "not at all hopeful" about prosecution of Lakhvi. Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao told IANS that the prosecution in Pakistan was taking only half-hearted measures. "One expects Pakistan will show sincerity and not merely take tentative measures. Lakhvi is a test case for Pakistan. Convictions in the 26/11 will show whether Pakistan is sincere in fighting terror," he said. Congress leader Raashid Alvi said that Pakistan had apparently taken decision to slap fresh case against Lakhvi under India's pressure. "They should have argued in the court of law against Lakhvi (on 26/11). They should have convinced the court," he said. Alvi accused Pakistan government of taking the 26/11 case "very lightly and not learning any lesson from the recent terror attack in which school children were targeted".

BJP hails court decision on Shah, Congress says government misusing CBI New Delhi (IANS): The BJP Tuesday welcomed the discharge of party president Amit Shah by a special court in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case and termed it a "victory of truth". Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley called it Shah's "vindication". Congress leader Raashid Alvi, however, accused the Narendra Modi government of misusing the Central Bureau of Investigation. "There have been cases pending against him (Shah) for 10 years and all of a sudden, after six months' rule of Modi, the CBI has

realised that there is no proof against him. It's an obvious example that the CBI is working under the pressure of the Modi government," he said. The BJP in a statement said Shah's discharge vindicated the party's stand and unwavering faith in the judiciary. It also accused the Congress of misusing investigating agencies to implicate its political opponents and demanded an apology from Congress president Sonia Gandhi. "The Congress always misused the CBI to fulfill its political interests. The Congress' dual character

has been exposed. Now it is clear that the Congress-led UPA government conspired politically to implicate Shah," said a BJP statement issued by party secretary Shrikant Sharma. It accused the Congress of resorting to a "crooked mode" to tarnish Shah's image as it (Congress) "cannot win politically". "People of this country will never forgive this despicable antics. Congress president Sonia Gandhi should apologise to the nation for this odious crime," the statement said. Jaitley said the CBI court dis-

charging Shah in the alleged staged shootout case vindicated the party chief. Shah Tuesday got a major relief when a special CBI court discharged him in the case related to Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauserbi Sheikh and witness Tulsiram Prajapati in Gujarat. Central Bureau of Investigation special judge M.B. Gosavi ruled that there exists "no case" against Shah and that he (Shah) was implicated in the case for "political reasons." Jaitley said he was following the case and it was "politically motivat-

ed" to malign Shah and Modi, who was the Gujarat chief minister at that time. "Since I had analysed the alleged evidence, both during investigation and after the filing of the chargesheet, I was among the few voices which had consistently maintained during the past three years that the prosecution of Amit Shah was a case of 'no evidence'," he wrote in an article posted on the BJP website. Jaitley said he had written a letter Sep 27 to the then prime minister Manmohan Singh about the case.

Sons conspire with tantrik, kill Maharashtra woman for wealth Nashik (Maharashtra) (IANS): In a shocking incident of alleged human sacrifice to propitiate the gods for money and happiness, two brothers conspired with a woman tantrik to torture and kill their mother to acquire wealth and prosperity. The two brothers - Kashinath Dore and Govind Dore - of Dandval village of Thane district who approached woman tantrik Bachubai Khadke of Takeharsh village have been arrested. The tantrik, accused of conducting the sacrificial rituals, is missing and on the run, police

said Tuesday. According to a police official, the Dore brothers on Bachubai's advice tortured, disrobed and sacrificed their mother Budhibai Dore to acquire wealth and prosperity. The incident which took place in October came to light after the woman's daughter Rahi Pingle, who also lives in Takeharsh, approached a local social organisation to inform police. The two brothers told Pingle how they, despite all efforts, failed to acquire riches and she

asked them to meet the woman tantrik for advice. Bachubai reportedly told the brothers that their mother and sister were "witches" who were obstructing their progress. She ordered the brothers to bring their mother and sister to her for 'tantrik treatment' which could end their bad spell. At the time of Diwali festivities in October, the brothers lured their mother and sister to Bachubai who pushed them into confinement, deprived them of food or water in the name of treatment, and weak-

ened them physically. A couple of days later, Bachubai allegedly made Budhibai and Pingle nude, gouged out Budhibai's eyes and later killed her in a tantrik ritual in the presence of the brothers, a police official in Ghoti town in the district told media persons here Tuesday. A terrified and completely nude Pingle managed to escape and travelled around 40 km to reach her home. Later, she attempted to lodge a complaint with local police, but for over a month they

shunned her, until a local social organisation took up her case. The police official said a search of Bachubai's home revealed at least two bodies, suspected to be those of other sacrificial victims. Police are probing whether some more people may have become victims of Bachubai's tantrik rituals. While the Dore brothers have admitted to the crime, police have detained at least 10 suspects working for Bachubai, and further investigation is underway.

Situation under Modi worse than Emergency: Mamata Kharagpur, (West Bengal) (IANS): Claiming that India under the Narendra Modi government was going through a phase worse than the Emergency period, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday asserted that

her government will not implement the proposed amendments in the Land Acquisition Act. Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress chief, urged the people to burn the "black ordinance" that was Monday

approved by the Modi cabinet to amend the Land Acquisition Act to remove "procedural difficulties" in acquiring land for national projects and to "further strengthen" provisions concerning "affected families". "This government is bulldoz-

ing democracy across the country. The Narendra Modi government has created a situation that is worse than the Emergency period," said Banerjee addressing a public meeting at the Kharagpur College Ground here. "The centre is amending the Land Acquisition Act which will allow them to snatch away your land at gun point. But I throw this challenge to them. So long as I am alive I will never allow any forcible acquisition of land. They will have to acquire land only on my dead body," she said. The Trinamool supremo who spearheaded the Save Farmland movement in Hooghly district's Singur that eventually catapulted her to power in West Bengal, called for burning the "black ordinance". "How dare the government take away your right to land? I will never allow such a law in West Bengal. I urge you all to

take a copy of the ordinance and burn it. Burn this black ordinance, we will never allow forcible acquisition of land in Bengal," Banerjee asserted. Banerjee also batted for her party state general secretary Shankudeb Panda who was Monday grilled by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Saradha scam, and accused the Modi government of unleashing the CBI to stifle the voices of protest. "Panda was merely a salaried employee, but he is being targeted only because he is from the Trinamool. Whoever is trying to stand up, is either put behind bars or being shown the CBI or the ED," said Banerjee. "You can cow down others but your arrests and CBI threats will have no effect on Trinamool. We will never be cowed down," asserted Banerjee. Banerjee and her Trinamool

have been against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)which in its probe of the multi-crore rupee Saradha scam, has netted four Trinamool leaders including Rajya Sabha members Kunal Ghosh, Srinjoy Bose and state transport minister Madan Mitra. Banerjee also targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its national secretary S.N. Singh who has been claiming that after her party leaders it was time for the chief minister to run from the CBI. "Their leaders come here and say 'bhag Mamata bhag' (run Mamata run). These shameless people have no manners. They say Mamata Banerjee will have to be arrested. Is it that easy? Do they think it is like popping a lollypop," asked Banerjee. Accusing the BJP of selling the country through FDI, Banerjee urged people to stand up against the anti-people policies of the centre.

AirAsia crash: Modi offers condolences to victims' families

New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday offered condolences to the families of those on AirAsia flight QZ8501 after the airlines confirmed that its debris had been spotted in the sea. "Our thoughts are with the families of those on Flight QZ8501. We offer our condolences and

stand firmly with them in this hour of grief," said Modi. AirAsia confirmed that the debris spotted in the Java Sea, is from the missing flight QZ8501, even as three bodies confirmed to be those of passengers in the plane were retrieved. The debris was seen in the Karimata Strait, around

110 nautical miles south west from Pangkalan Bun in Central Kalimantan province in Borneo island. Flight QZ 8501 lost contact with the air control tower 42 minutes after taking off from Indonesia's Surabaya city for Singapore early Sunday morning.

Rajnath reviews security situation ahead of Obama visit

Rajnath Singh

New Delhi (IANS): Home Minister Rajnath Singh Tuesday reviewed the country's security situation at a highlevel meeting here ahead of US

President Barack Obama's visit to India for the Republic Day celebrations. The meeting also comes after the recent violence in Assam perpetrated by Bodo militants and a blast in Bengaluru. "It was a high-level inter-ministerial meeting. The main purpose was to review the security establishment in the country," a home ministry official told IANS. The official refused to reveal the points discussed in the meeting, but confirmed that the government did not want to leave any error in security during Obama's visit. "We discussed the country's security situation," army chief Gen. Dalbir Singh told reporters after the meeting, but refused to give details. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and chiefs of intelligence agencies were also present in the meeting.

Gogoi blames Centre for Assam violence Guwahati (IANS): The central government was to blame for the recent violence in Assam that left 79 people dead and rendered over two lakh people homeless, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said Tuesday, alleging a nexus between the BJP and Bodo militants. Gogoi said this to the media while countering the Bharatiya Janata Party's allegation that the state government failed to act on intelligence inputs provided by central agencies and prevent the violence that rocked the three districts of Sonitpur, Kokrajhar and Chirang Dec 23. He alleged a nexus between the BJP and the Bodo militants and said the the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) faction opposed to peace talks had supported the party during the Lok Sabha polls in Assam. The General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the army's 4 Corps based in Tezpur is the operational head of the Unified Command structure that carries out counter-insurgency operations in Assam. So, it is the responsibility of the army, which is under the Centre," he said. "We received intelligence inputs about a probable attack by militants. However, the central agencies had also received the same information. I want to ask them what were the central agencies doing? Why couldn't they prevent the attacks?" Gogoi asked. "This is not the time for a blame-game. The BJP is trying to politicise the violence. The central government has not blamed me but I have seen that some BJP leaders are trying to blame me. I am

only answering their allegations," the chief minister said. Asked about his allegation of the BJP's nexus with the NDFB, Gogoi said the people of Assam know the party had the support of the militants. "The militants had targeted our party candidate in Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency. We had to provide him a bullet-proof car for campaigning. So, people of Assam are aware about the nexus," he said. Gogoi said the situation was fast returning to normal in the three districts. As of now, 2.11 lakh people were taking shelter in relief camps in the affected areas. "We have deployed maximum security personnel in the affected areas. At present, we have 135 companies of security forces in Assam. We have built pickets in interior places to ensure security and instill confidence among the people," he said.

UP clears metro rail project reports for four cities Lucknow (IANS): The Uttar Pradesh cabinet Tuesday okayed the detailed project reports (DPRs) for metro rail projects in four major cities. ern Uttar Pradesh and Kanpur is the commercial capital of Uttar Pradesh with a large number of business houses and industries. Sources say the Samajwadi Party (SP) government was keen to ensure that work on the ambitious projects is kickstarted by 2015 to convince the electorate that development work is going on when the state goes for state assembly polls early 2017. Work on the first phase of the Lucknow Metro Rail is

already underway and the state government has assured that work on this route would be completed by December 2016. In the Lok Sabha election earlier this year, the SP got a major drubbing when it won just five seats out of the 80 in the state. Since then the Akhilesh Yadav government has undertaken a slew of projects to develop infrastructure in the state and has shied away from populism.

ED questions Punjab minister for four hours

Jalandhar (IANS): Punjab's powerful Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials Friday for over four hours with regard to money-laundering links in a multi-million-rupee international synthetic drugs racket busted last year. Majithia, who is the younger brother of union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, faces allegations of having links with certain nonresident Indians (NRIs) who have been accused of international money laundering related to the massive drugs racket. Majithia arrived at the regional office of the ED in Jalandhar, 150 km from Chandigarh, around 10.30 a.m. and remained inside for over four hours. Jalandhar police rounded up several activists of students

organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who had gathered near the ED office to protest against Majithia. ED sources said Majithia was questioned on certain links with the NRIs. He was asked several questions based on investigations done in this case by the ED. "I want the truth to come out. I am ready to cooperate with any agency so that they can reach to the bottom of this thing (drugs racket links)," Majithia told media after coming out from the questioning session. The ED, a wing under the union finance ministry, had sent summons to Majithia, who is the revenue minister in the Parkash Singh Badal-led government in Punjab, to appear before it Dec 26. Punjab Police had busted the Rs.6,000-crore international

Bikram Singh Majithia synthetic drugs racket in the state in 2013. The ED conducted separate investigations in the drug racket case after serious allegations of money laundering emerged. Majithia's name figured in the racket after the main accused in the drugs case, Jagdish Singh

Bhola, a former police officer, alleged that Majithia was linked to the racket. Majithia is also the brother-inlaw of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal (Harsimrat's husband). He is considered very powerful in Punjab's ruling circles due to his proximity to Sukhbir Badal. There have been demands from various quarters for Majithia's resignation on moral grounds after he was recently summoned by the ED. Chief Minister Badal, however, ruled out Majithia's resignation. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been running an alliance government with the Akali Dal in Punjab since 2007, has also left the Badal government and the Akali Dal embarrassed after it sought

Majithia's resignation this week. The ED summons to Majithia was an embarrassment for the Badal government as the central government is BJP-led and Harsimrat Badal is the Akali Dal representative in it. Though Majithia's name started figuring in the racket last year, when the Congress-led UPA government was in power at the Centre, the summons were finally sent by the ED only now after the BJP government came to power. The Badals are considered close to union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who unsuccessfully contested the Amritsar Lok Sabha poll in April-May this year from the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency at the behest of the Badal-Majithia combine. The opposition Congress also sought the immediate resignation of Majithia.

Centre's nod to Punjab to dispose of damaged wheat Chandigarh (IANS): The central government has allowed the Punjab government to dispose of over six lakh [600,000] tonnes of damaged wheat lying in the state, an official said Saturday. "The government and its procurement agencies have damaged

wheat to the tune of six lakh tonnes lying in Punjab. According to the earlier guidelines of the central government, only those parties registered with the FCI (Food Corporation of India) were eligible for participation in the tendering process," a state government

spokesman said here. "There were about 30-40 parties in India registered with the FCI for purchase of damaged wheat. These parties connived with each other to pool the tenders and offered very less rates to the procurement agencies. The state gov-

ernment agencies suffered huge financial losses," he said. He said the majority of these bidders had limited purchasing capacity and used to lift only some part of the damaged wheat, resulting in the government agencies bearing additional heavy costs on

warehousing expenses of the damaged wheat. Punjab contributes over 50 percent of the foodgrains to the national kitty despite having just 1.54 percent of the country's geographical area.

BSF seizes heroin worth Rs.15 crore near Amritsar Amritsar (IANS): The Border Security Force (BSF) Sunday seized three kg of heroin, valued at Rs.15 crore in the international market, from the Amritsar sector of the

India-Pakistan border, an official said. A BSF spokesman said the seizure was made near the Fatehpur border out post, nearly

300 km from Chandigarh. BSF troopers noticed some movement in the area near the international border despite the darkness and dense fog. They fired

in that direction. A search of the area later led to the recovery of the heroin. The suspected smugglers escaped under the cover of the fog and darkness.

With the latest seizure, the BSF has seized 361 kg of heroin this year in the Punjab sector. A total of 322 kg of the narcotic was seized in 2013.

Akali Dal tones down drugs protest against BSF Chandigarh (IANS): After drawing flak for its move to protest against the BSF on the drugs issue, Punjab's ruling Akali Dal Tuesday seemed to have toned down its action, saying that it will now hold three 'dharnas' on the IndiaPakistan border "to create awareness about drugs as well as focus on the need for greater vigilance". The decision was taken Tuesday at a meeting of the Shiromani Akali Dal leadership, chaired by party patron and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, party spokesmen Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Daljit Singh Cheema said here. The Akali Dal will now hold

three "awareness dharnas" near Attari, Hussainiwala and Sadki check points in Amritsar, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts on Jan 5. "The proposed dharna at Gurdaspur has been put off and now merged with the Attari programme," the spokesmen said. The Congress had Monday demanded that the central government should book Deputy Chief Minister and party chief Sukhbir Badal for sedition since he and his party were going to protest against the Border Security Force which is guarding the country's international border. The Akali Dal move to hold the protests on Jan 5 was being

seen in the state's political circles as a move to pre-empt the rally against drugs menace being held by their alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP national president Amit Shah will address the rally in Amritsar Jan 12. Sukhbir Badal will lead the party dharna at Attari. "Akali Dal ministers will also participate in the programmes but in their private capacity and will not use their official cars for this purpose," the spokesmen said. At the party meeting Tuesday, Chief Minister Badal clarified that the party was "not against the BSF". Badal said: "The fight against

Punjab scraps NRI meet, opts for low-profile event Chandigarh (IANS): Marking a shift from its earlier high-profile annual NRI meets, the Punjab government has decided to opt for a comparatively lowprofile events for the diaspora early next year. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Sunday held his first "Sangat Darshan" for NRIs in Punjab's Moga town, 175 km from here. "The chief minister held the Sangat Darshan exclusively for direct interface with Non Resident Punjabis (NRPs) to redress the problems faced by these sons of the soil in a far more effective manner," said a state government spokesman. Punjab used to hold a

high-profile annual event for NRIs annually for the last six years, spending millions of rupees. A number of NRPs from US, Canada, Britain, European nations and other countries used to attend with the Punjab government making tall promises to them and claiming that the NRPs would invest in the state. However, none of the big promises made have been delivered in recent years. On Sunday, the Punjab government claimed that it had got an "over-whelming response" from NRPs for the new format to meet them. "The initiative of the state government got an overwhelming response

from the Punjabi Diaspora as the venue of this firstever NRI Sangat Darshan was packed with the NRPs hailing from eight districts of Moga, Bathinda, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Mansa, Sri Muktsar Sahib and Barnala," the spokesman claimed. Badal announced to set up separate NRI cell in every district across the state to facilitate getting their routine administrative works done smoothly. He also asked the state home secretary to review the list of NRP Proclaimed Offenders (POs) saying that no injustice should be done to NRPs who were not involved in any crime.

drugs is the shared responsibility of the centre and state governments and people of the country. The Akali Dal is not against the centre or the BSF." He said that new technology should be used by the BSF and other security agencies to increase surveillance at the border. Citing the example of the US' border with Mexico, Badal said that the US government was also faced with similar challenges and had taken effective steps to control smuggling. Badal regretted that Punjab was being "defamed and even projected as if it was an 'adda' (hub) of drugs". Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his

recent nationwide radio address, had specifically mentioned the drugs abuse rampant in Punjab. "If we had not taken proactive action and conducted the record seizures we have, these drugs would have travelled further into the country and created havoc," Badal claimed, pointing out that earlier vested interests had also portrayed Punjabis as terrorists. "This is why we are holding these dharnas. We want to make everyone aware of the danger posed by the penetration of drugs from Afghanistan into Punjab and engage everyone in this war against drugs," Badal said.

Dhoni makes Test exit, Kohli assumes reigns Melbourne / Mumbai (IANS): Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni Tuesday sent world cricket into a tizzy by announcing his shock retirement from Tests, making way for Virat Kohli to take charge of arguably the most stressful job in the sport. Dhoni, dubbed 'captain cool', brought his Test tenure to an end with immediate effect after India failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here, citing strain of playing all three formats of the game. Kohli, who captained the side in the first Test in Adelaide, will now lead India in the final Test in Sydney starting Jan 6. Dhoni was in an upbeat mood when he faced the media after play despite the result, but he made no reference to his future in the game. Around 45 minutes after his press conference concluded, the the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement announcing his retirement, sending shockwaves in the cricket fraternity. What has irked most cricket puritans has been the timing of Dhoni's retirement - in the middle of a Test series against Australia even though it is a lost cause. Kohli's aggressiveness, sometimes bordering on brash and go for the kill attitude in Adelaide gave a glimpse into life beyond Dhoni.

Former cricketers from all over the globe praised Kohli's captaincy and how team India went for the win instead of being defensive and just making the numbers. Dhoni's sudden decision was surely swayed by Kohli's performance in the first Test and with another overseas Test series defeat concluded, his stand probably became all the more easy. India's most successful captain has had a torrid of late and has been criticised for his poor overseas record. Trailing 0-2 in the four-match Test series, the third match here Tuesday ended in a stalemate. India's poor run in Tests overseas continued, prompting Dhoni, who guided India to most number of Test wins as captain (27), to quit the five-day format. In a statement issued in Mumbai by BCCI, secretary Sanjay Patel said the board respected the 33-year-old Dhoni's decision and thanked him for his "enormous contribution to Tests cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India". "M.S. Dhoni has chosen to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODI and T20 formats," said the BCCI statement. "BCCI, while respecting the decision of M.S. Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test cricket and

the laurels that he has brought to India." "Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian Team for the fourth and final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney from the Jan 6, 2015." Dhoni has played 90 Tests for India, scoring 4,876 runs and was instrumental in taking the Indian team to the top of Test rankings. India became the No.1 team in the International Cricket Council's Test rankings under Dhoni's leadership. Out of the 90 Tests he played, Dhoni captained India in 60 matches. However, his overseas record had been a source of criticism as he led India to six wins, 15 losses in 30 Tests. The team had been whitewashed 0-4 in England (2011) and Australia (2011-12) under his leadership. Besides this, the team also suf-

fered defeats in South Africa and New Zealand and lost to England yet again this summer. England also inflicted further damage by winning the Test series in India in 2012/13 after 28 years and also became the first team to win a series on Indian soil in eight years. Dhoni's retirement prompted widespread reactions on social media, with tributes flooding in from all corners of the globe, including from legendary Sachin Tendulkar and inspirational Australian skipper Ricky Ponting. Tendulkar congratulated Dhoni on a wonderful career and also urged him to help India defend the World Cup title. "well done on a wonderful career in test cricket @msdhoni. Always enjoyed playing together. Next target 2015 WC my friend!!," Tendulkar tweeted.

Reacting to Dhoni's retirement from Test cricket, former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting praised Dhoni for his competitiveness and also said Indian cricket owed a lot to him. "A great competitor, and someone who I think Indian cricket owes a lot to," former Australian captain Ponting wrote on Twitter. Indian legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi was taken by surprise following Dhoni's decision to quit in the middle of the ongoing Test series. "MSDhoni's retirement in midst of test series leaves lot of us perplexed! But that's his prerogative.I'd like 2 wish MSD Happy Retirement!!," Bedi wrote on Twitter. Dhoni (eight catches, one stumping) last act of note in the Test arena saw him become the first Indian wicketkeeper to effect nine dismissals in a Test match in Melbourne. Overall, he became the third wicketkeeper to achieve the feat against Australia - the first two being David Murray (West Indies) at Melbourne in December 1981 and Ridley Jacobs (also of the West Indies) at Melbourne in December 2000. Dhoni also became the first Indian batsman to complete 10,000 runs or more as captain in international cricket, joining Ricky Ponting (15,440), Graeme Smith (14,878), Stephen Fleming (11,561) and Allan Border (11,062).

Top 5 New Year's R e s o l u t i o n s Fo r 2015:

The year 2014 is about to end and as we usher in 2015, let's take a moment to think on what we want to accomplish or change for the New Year. Take a look at the top 5 New Year's resolutions for 2015 to give you an idea on where to start.

HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. There are nine zones in the puzzle. Do not enter a digit into a box if it already appears elsewhere in the same zone, row across or column down the entire puzzle. Solve Time: Under 13 min. - Genius; 13-17 min - Scholar; 17-21 min - Smart; 21-25 min - Not bad; 25+ min - Keep practising DIFFICULTY LEVEL : MEDIUM

According to Real Simple, only eight percent of people actually k e e p t h e i r N e w Ye a r ' s resolutions. This might be because some resolutions are too lofty or hard to achieve in just a year. Why not start small and aim for much more realistic goals? Below are some suggestions for New Year's

1. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise After all the holiday revelry filled with feasts and merr y making, you're bound to have gained a bit of weight. Start the year right by working out regularly to lose all the additional pounds. If you can exercise outdoors instead of the gym, that would be better and try to work out with a buddy to make it more fun. 2. Cut Back On The Sugar Even if you prefer brown sugar to white sugar, it's still a good idea to minimize overall sugar intake. Eating way too much sugar is bad for you anyway. If you must have something sweet, reach for fruits instead of

processed desserts like candies, doughnuts, cookies and cakes. And, opt for natural sugar substitutes like stevia or agave instead of actual sugar. It will still taste good, but it will not make your blood sugar go up to alarming levels. 3. Prioritize Me-Time Take care of yourself. It's not a selfish thing to have some metime. It will actually help you recharge and feel much better. Even if it's just a manicure and pedicure, a spa treatment, a movie, a relaxing massage, coffee, tea, a new book or a new haircut, just make sure to indulge from time to time.

In 2015, try to get more sleep and aim for seven and eight hours per night. This will sufficiently recharge your body after a hard day's work. It's also better to sleep earlier than late at night. These are the top 5 New Year's resolutions for 2015. Amir Khan to build boxing academy in Pakistan Lahore (IANS): Former Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan, a British boxer of Pakistani origin, announced that he will set up a boxing academy in Pakistan. On a visit to the Data Darbar Sunday, where he laid a floral wreath on the grave of Sufi saint Abul Hassan Ali Hajvery and offered prayers for the victims of the Peshawar school massacre, Amir urged the government to eliminate terrorism by promoting education and sports among Pakistani youths, Dawn online reported Monday. “There is so much boxing talent in Pakistan,” he told reporters. “I have a desire to build a boxing academy

here to discover this talent and impart training of international standards.” The 28-year-old Amir, who finished second in the lightweight category in the boxing competition at the 2004 Athens Olympics, said he had come to Pakistan to show the world that the country is not a dangerous place but a peaceful land. “Pakistan is a safe and peaceful country … We all should be good Muslims,” he said. The former world light welterweight champion said he would also visit Peshawar to meet the families of the attack victims. “What took place in Peshawar is absolutely horrific and sickening,” he added.

“After recently becoming a father myself, I can’t imagine how the families of these innocent children are feeling.” Earlier Sunday, Amir met Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and discussed ways to promote sports in the province. He appreciated Shahbaz’s efforts for promotion of sports, expressing his willingness to play a role in this. “Amir Khan has earned a lot of fame and respect in the field of boxing. Promoting sports in the country is key to fighting terrorism that has engulfed Pakistan,” Shahbaz said. Shahbaz also assured Amir that every drop of blood shed during the attack on the Army Public School would be avenged.

Tendulkar denies seeking Dhyan Chand deserves Bharat land from IIT Delhi for Ratna: Milkha Singh academy New Delhi (IANS): Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar Sunday denied planning a cricket academy and seeking land from IIT Delhi to build it, adding he was "appalled" by reports suggesting so. "I am appalled to read the stories that suggest some land has been asked from IIT-D for academy in my name," Tendulkar said in a tweet. "I have not even planned any academy neither do I want any piece of land for any purpose," he added. The batting maestro's comments come after media reported Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi director Raghunath K. Shevgaonkar quit following pressure from the ministry of human resource development to provide the IIT ground for a cricket academy that Tendulkar was keen on opening in the city. "Wish that basic facts are checked from me before publishing such fiction using my name," Tendulkar further slammed the report. According to a media report, Shevgaonkar was also under pressure to pay nearly Rs.70 lakh to former faculty and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy as his "salary dues" between 1972 and 1991.

Chandigarh (IANS): While reiterating that Major Dhyan Chand should be conferred the Bharat Ratna, legendary athlete Milkha Singh conveyed his congratulations to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and late freedom fighter-educationist Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya on being named for India's highest civilian honour. “I wish to congratulate Vajpayeeji for a very deserving recognition. And I am very happy to see the posthumous recognition for Malviyaji for his service to the nation in many ways," Milkha said. However, Milkha said that former hockey superstar Dhyan Chand, who powered India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936, too deserves the honour. "I also wish to see the Bharat Ratna conferred on Dhyan Chand for his tremendous service to our country. He made India proud. To build sports consciousness in our country and the character building it leads to, we need to honour our sportsmen as they help both

Dhyan Chand by bringing laurels to the country and also inspiring many to work hard at whatever they do," Milkha, who participated in the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, said. "It was good to see Sachin (Tendulkar) get it last year and hopefully Dhyan Chand too. Though, ideally it should be given when a person is alive."

Children targeted in another year of living dangerously for Pakistan Islamabad / New Delhi (IANS): From a teenaged schoolboy who gave his life to stop a suicide bomber to the dozens of young boys and girls gunned down in their Peshawar school - children increasingly became terror targets in Pakistan, which continued to reel under attacks, political turmoil and natural catastrophes in 2014. But one youth who made news for the right reasons was feisty teenager Malala Yousufzai, who became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (awarded jointly with Indian rights activist Kailash Satyarthi). Terrorism continued to wreak havoc right from the year's first day. Everyone was a target - pilgrims in Quetta, progovernment tribal elders in Khyber Agency, soldiers in Bannu, the general headquarters in Rawalpindi, polio vaccination teams in KhyberPakhtunkhwa, a court in

Islamabad, the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, the flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah and finally Peshawar's Army Public School. A prominent victim was Karachi's counter-terrorism chief Chaudhry Aslam Khan, killed in a blast Jan 10. But in a case of rare bravery, 14-year-old Aitzaz Hasan - late for school in KhyberPakhtunwa's Hangu - Jan 9 sacrificed his own life to stop a suicide bomber at the gate, saving hundreds of his schoolmates inside. The June 8 Karachi airport attack led to operation "Zarb-eAzb" in North Waziristan against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other terrorist groups. The TTP retaliated with the Nov 2 Wagah bombing, leaving at least 60 dead, and the Dec 16 Peshawar school massacre which left 141 dead, including 132 children aged 8 to 18, and thousands of students acutely traumatised.

Termed "Pakistan's 9/11", it was the country's worst-ever terror attack , surpassing the 2007 Karachi attack on Benazir Bhutto's motorcade when 139 were killed. "Peshawar (attack) was a watershed. It will show Pakistanis what terrorists are capable of and people outside what we have to face," a Pakistani diplomat in New Delhi told IANS. The political scene was turbulent too. An operation June 17 to clear barricades near the Lahore house of cleric-cumpolitician Muhammad Tahir-ulQadri led to pitched battles between his followers and police, leaving at least 14 dead. Media capturing the clashes live also recorded a handlebarmoustached-goon, allegedly connected to the ruling Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz, smashing windshields of parked vehicles. Gullu Butt, arrested and sentenced to 11 years jail, had his moment of

notoriety becoming a byword for a political vandal - and getting his own videogame. Cricketer-tur ned-Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan continued to demand the prime minister's resignation due to the alleged electoral fraud in the 2013 general election, and began on Aug 14 the "Azaadi March" from Lahore to Islamabad. In the national capital, the protest, where PAT's own Inquilab March converged, took a violent streak and saw pitched battles with security forces, while media got caught in the crossfire. PTI's sit-in, where the calls for "Go Nawaz Go" slowly got fainter, was called off Dec 17 after the Peshawar attack. Diplomatically, the year was mixed. Relations with its western neighbour promised to improve with the comparatively friendlier figure of Ashraf Ghani Ahmedzai winning the Afghan presidential polls, but with its sprawling eastern

neighbour remained tense after Narendra Modi's election victory and frequent skirmishes on the Line of Control. There were signs of a thaw with Sharif taking up Modi's invitation for his swearing-in but foreign secretary-level talks were called off by India after the Pakistan envoy met leaders of the separatist Hurriyat. Bail to Mumbai attack alleged plotter Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was another irritant. Nature also unleashed its fury with floods in September leaving over 200 dead in northern Pakistan and Pakistanoccupied Kashmir. But Pakistanis demonstrate a unique resilience in all the danger. TV programmes like the Aftab Iqbal-helmed "Khabar Naak" and "Hasb-e-Haal" show the people's capacity to laugh at their times and circumstances while also holding insightful discussions about the way ahead as 2015 approaches.

Pakistan PM chairs meeting to review anti-terror plan Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting Tuesday to review the progress in implementing the National Action Plan for countering terrorism in the country. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed, Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif, Director

Nawaz Sharif

General of Inter Services Intelligence Gen. Rizwan Akhter, Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Maj. Gen. Amir Riaz and Federal Law Secretary Barrister Zafarullah attended the meeting. During the meeting Sharif expressed confidence over various anti-terrorism measures and hoped that it would be eliminated from Pakistan

through the collective resolve of the government and citizens, Dawn online reported. Sharif said the government would refer cases of hardcore terrorists, who are responsible for mass murders of innocent civilians, kids and soldiers, to special military courts. "Special courts are part of the national action plan and are meant to provide an extraordinary solution for an

extraordinary problem. All institutions would have to carefully scrutinise cases to be sent for prosecution in the special military tribunals," said Sharif. He said the formulation of a unified action plan was a manifestation of national consensus on the issue of terrorism, adding that the government would ensure its swift implementation.

Modi, Rekha named India's hottest vegetarian celebs PRIME Minister Narendra Modi and veteran actress Rekha have been named the hottest vegetarian celebrities by People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Early leaders Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor as well as Amitabh Bachchan, R. Madhavan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Hema Malini put up a real fight. But after thousands of votes were cast to help PETA India choose

the winners, the results indicated Modi and Rekha to be on the top, said a statement. "I've been a vegetarian for most of my life and can endorse the fact that it affects the way you think and perceive life", Rekha said. Modi practises yoga to stay fit and dines on animal-friendly vegetarian foods whenever he meets with international delegates.

"Rekha and Prime Minister Modi have inspired caring people everywhere to ditch meat in favour of vegetarian foods. Both of PETA India's winners prove that nothing is hotter than kindness, which they show every time they sit down for a meal," said Poorva Joshipura, chief executive officer, PETA India. (IANS)

Folk artistes are a bridge between our nations: Pakistani singer Arif Lohar FOLK artistes from India and Pakistan are a "bridge" between the countries and try and improve bilateral relations when things become "sour", says popular Pakistani folk singer Arif Lohar, who featured in the "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" biopic. Not only has he been able to continue the folk tradition from his legendary father Alam Lohar, but has even popularised it on the youth of the sub-continent and its diaspora. With his Jugni duet with Pakistani singer Meesha Shafi for Coke Studio topping the charts in 2010 and the "Tu Bhaag Milkha" title song, Lohar continues to charm music lovers across generations. "You cannot say that a particular time belongs to a certain style (of singing). Over the centuries, the folk tradition has continued. I am blessed that I am instrumental in continuing this great tradition," the 50year-old Lohar told IANS in an

interview while on a visit here. "Lok fankaar rabbon paida hunda hai. Ihnu koi academy nahin banaundi (Folk artists are god-sent, no academy creates them)," said Lohar, who speaks in Punjabi and spends most of his time in India these days. "I have no idea how many times I have been to India. Whenever I am called, I come. I have got a lot of love from all generations in India and Pakistan and from people settled in other parts of the world. I get a lot of love and respect in India. That is one reason why I keep coming here regularly. Every moment here is yaadgar (memorable)," said the portly singer who has acted in over 45 Pakistani films, including in lead roles. "Artists come from the soil and spread love all around. We meet a lot of loving people. All the people that god has created are beautiful," Lohar said, adding with a short poem:

“God created mankind to spread love but man created divisions and hatred. What we will sow, so shall we reap." Lohar said artists from India and Pakistan are a "bridge" between the two countries. "Whenever the water (IndiaPakistan relations) get sour, we come to make it sweet. Artists try their best to do this to improve the relations better. They are a bridge between both sides. We get a lot of respect and love here. We share this respect and love," he said. Lohar, who had a "very simple" childhood in his Aach Gosh village in Gujrat district of Pakistani Punjab and was a "very naughty" child, attributed his success to his legendary father Alam Lohar's blessings. "My father used to tell me that even after he dies, his blessings would follow me everywhere. I could not understand his words at that time. Now I can feel and experience

what he used to say. Main apne baap di fakiri hasil kitti. Mainu badshahat nahin si chahidee (I have inherited piety from my father. I never wanted to be a king)," he said. He pointed out that he used to copy his father's singing style. "When he died in a road

accident in 1979, I started going to villages across Pakistan to sing folk songs. My father was so popular that thousands used to converge in villages where he performed. I feel happy that I am able to continue the tradition started by him," Arif said. "Wherever I go, I try to do justice to my 'ma boli' (mother tongue); my father did so throughout his life. I am continuing the tradition," he said. Lohar, who plays the 'chimta' (tongs), says that the traditional musical instrument had tremendous history attached to it. "Chimta is a traditional instrument. It is the symbol of a 'fakir' (mendicant). Iron is always used for weapons. This same iron is used by the fakir through the chimta to spread peace. It is actually made from two iron swords," said Lohar, who belongs to a family of traditional Mughal lohars (ironsmiths) who used to make weapons. (IANS)

Dibakar Banerjee keen on declassification of Netaji files KEEN to learn more about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bollywood filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee is fighting for declassification of secret files related to the nationalist leader. The "Khosla Ka Ghosla" maker is keen to know about Netaji's life but the authorities backed out of declassifying the files as promised, he said in a statement.

"It is a very puzzling issue...Mystery is mystery but history cannot be mystery," he said. "History cannot be hidden and if my information tells me right, between the PMO and the external affairs ministry there are about 60 to 80 files on Netaji which are classified while they have declassified about ten," Banerjee added.

"Still large measures of these files are not declassified and I think for a legend like Netaji, his life is heritage of India and it should not be a mystery,” said the director, who was in Kolkata recently. Recently, a section of Bose's family, that has been campaigning for declassification of secret files, sought the intervention of

the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on the issue. A large section of the Netaji family, researchers and historians have been seeking declassification of over 100 secret files said to be with various central government departments including the Prime Minister's Office. (IANS)

Bollywood, young India defend 'PK' but protests continue New Delhi / Mumbai (IANS): Bollywood and young India Tuesday passionately defended Aamir Khan-starrer "PK" even as Hindu rightwing groups continued their protests alleging that it defamed Hindu religion. Producers, directors and actors as well as movie buffs IANS spoke to were unanimous that the Hindi film no way hurt Hindu interests and that the protests were unacceptable as it had cleared the censors. But the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) reiterated its demand that the film, one of the biggest hits from Bollywood, be banned or at least what it said were the offending parts be deleted immediately. "PK", which released Dec 19, shows Aamir as an alien who is fascinated by India. The film, which takes a swipe at godmen, also stars Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh Rajput. On Tuesday, VHP and Bajrang Dal activists demonstrated at the Delite cinema in Old Delhi and at PVR Priya in south Delhi besides Kanpur, Bhopal and

Bhubaneswar. At all places, the protesters tore up the film's posters. The VHP said the screening was halted at the two theatres in the capital. The industry admitted that the protests had slightly affected the box office collection of the film, which has grossed Rs.246 crore in less than two weeks in the country. Director Rajkumar Hirani said: "I'm deeply saddened and concerned about the protests by some groups against our film. On behalf of the entire team of 'PK', I would like to clarify we respect all religions and faiths. "It saddens me to think that a film ... is accused of being disrespectful of Hinduism. I would like to thank the millions of deeply religious people who have loved the film (which) condemns only the abuse of (religion)." He urged the Hindu groups "to see the film in totality". Young India agreed. "It is unfortunate that people are staging protests. The scenes

and dialogues are not against god. As a Hindu myself, I didn't find anything insulting," film enthusiast Ayonav Bagchi, 33, told IANS. "My sentiments were not hurt. We have seen how godmen work in India. Most are corrupt. The movie is asking people to stay away from such people, and that's fine with me," he added. Md. Anzaar Aslam, 28, too praised the film. ter way to portray the intoxication of Indian society doped in religious superstitions? The protest was expected from a society which remains confined in the interpretations made by Pandits and Maulvis and has lost scientific temper," he said. Ragini Jha, 23, enjoyed "PK" so much that she has watched it twice. "It is not targeting anyone. It is not against any religion. I don't understand why people are taking offence." Arya Samaj leader Swami Agnivesh in fact demanded that the movie be made tax free. Agnivesh told IANS: "I found this film brilliant. It raises a fundamental debate on the true nature of any religion and their concept of god, the creator... The questions are very profound. The whole controversy is ... by those who feel threatened." Bollywood personalities came out openly in support of "PK", wondering how a movie cleared by the censors could be so viciously attacked. "What kind of a democracy are we living in?" asked director

Karan Johar. Actor Pooja Bedi tweeted: "God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts! Let's support PK." But VHP spokesman Vinod Bansal told IANS that the movie attacked Hindu religion. "The movie makes fun of Hinduism in every possible way... Scenes of attack on Christianity and Islam last for two minutes. For the rest of two-and-a- half hours or more, they keep making fun of Hinduism." Demonstrations against the movie took place Monday in Agra, Bhopal and Ahmedabad. Among those who have flayed it are yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Swami Swaroopanand Shankracharya and Maulana Firangi Mahal. Filmmaker Uday Chopra does not agree: "What a wonderful film! I am bowled over. It is the most important film that every Indian should see." Added producer Ritesh Sidhwani: "PK is a must watch. I am a believer and nowhere does it hurt our sentiments or question religion."

New leagues take off but IPL courts fresh controversy: 2014 in retrospect New Delhi (IANS): It was a year of many firsts for Indian sports with a number of new leagues taking off but controversy was not too far behind as a betting scandal among team principals in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) created ripples in the world of cricket. Corporates and prominent names from Bollywood and sports played a key role in shaping domestic franchise-based leagues. Thanks to their involvement, most of these leagues were organised and presented on a professional level, giving the Indian viewers a package never seen before. Following the success of domestic franchise-based leagues such as the IPL, Hockey India League (HIL) and Indian Badminton League (IBL) in past years, it rained sports leagues in 2014. Notwithstanding India's nosedive in FIFA rankings to 171, it was a new dawn for football in the country. The highly-awaited Indian Super League (ISL) finally kicked-off after many hiccups and changed the dynamics with which the

sport would now be viewed in the future. Juxtaposed with Bollywood, cricket and former international stars, the ISL was received with much fanfare all around the country. Football starved fans went gung-ho and the avarage attendance in ISL matches broke all domestic records. Tennis fans in the country also had a momentous year. It was a double bonanza for the racquet sport followers with the start of not one but two leagues. While the much-touted International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) grabbed all the headlines, thanks to its starcast with the likes of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic gracing India for the first time, the more domestic flavour of the Vijay Amritraj headed Champions Tennis League (CTL) was also received well. The year also saw the revival of India's premier indigenous sport - kabaddi. Two leagues jostled to make their mark - the Pro Kabaddi League and the World Kabaddi League. Both attracted fans in huge numbers and

turned around the fortunes of the sport in terms of popularity. Indian cricket went through another tumultuous year on and off the field with a controversy that shook the very foundation of the game's governing body - the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) - that refused to die down and spilled over to the New Year after raising several tough questions for its beleaguered president, N. Srinivasan. Srinivasan was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons throughout the year as his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was implicated by the Mudgal Committee report on the betting and match-fixing scandal during IPL-6. He himself faced several embarrassing and potentially image-damaging questions. On-field performances also began on a wrong note for India, losing their away twomatch Test series against New Zealand 0-1 and the five-match One-Day International (ODI) series 0-4. The team's form plummeted further in the

Asia Cup final in Bangladesh and the subsequent Twenty20 World Cup, getting outplayed in the final by Sri Lanka. The team's misery continued in its tour of England, losing both the Test and ODI series, 1-3. India sought comfort at home against the West Indies and led 2-1 in the four-match ODI series when the touring side, embroiled in a payment dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the players union, called off the remainder of the tour with a Twenty20 and three Test matches still to be played. India's tour of Australia also started off poorly with the visitors losing the first two Tests in the four-match series. Still, there was something to cheer about as batsman Rohit Sharma's 264 in Kolkata against Sri Lanka became the highest individual score in an ODI. Badminton had a standout year for India. The women's team clinched its first bronze in the Uber Cup. They lost to eventual champions Japan 2-3 in the semifinal. Star shuttler Saina Nehwals's early part of the year was marked with belowpar performances as she was hounded by injuries. Her split with childhood coach Pullela Gopichand to train under Vimal Kumar in the Prakash Padukone Academy in Bengaluru dramatically turned around her fortunes as she became the SERVING COMMUNITY SINCE 1982 first Indian woman to win the China Open Super Series. NOW SERVING YOU FROM OUR NEW, BIGGER & BETTER LOCATION IN SURREY Indian male shuttlers also did the nation proud. While Kidambi Srikanth, who has risen to World No.4, stunned two-time Olympic and fivetime World champion Lin Dan to win China Open title, Parupalli Kashyap etched his name firmly in the history books by becoming the first Indian in 32 years to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. Indian men's hockey took giant strides towards reclaiming its position as one of the biggies of the sport with an Asian Games gold after 16 years, finishing runners-up in the Commonwealth Games and a few other memorable victories against top-ranked teams but their momentum took a beating following chief coach Terry Walsh's resignation. Indian sportspersons put up commendable performances in the Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow and Asian Games at Incheon. HEALTH

Stay healthy in 2015 with proper diet, right exercise Los Angeles, Dec 31 (IANS) Looking to shape up in the New Year? Check your diet, pick exercises wisely and more. Fitness expert Tracy Anderson shares how to stay in shape, reports people.com. * Be honest with yourself about the body you want: Have a real conversation about where you’re at with your health. You need to find exercises with some sort of strategy behind them, a strategy for how you want your body to look and perform. * Exercise five to seven days a week: If you don’t work out one day, you’re going to stay the same or gain weight. We need to get used to taking care of our bodies. We spend five

minutes a day brushing our teeth, and teeth are tiny in comparison to the rest of our bodies. So if teeth take up five minutes of your day, the rest of your body can take up 30 to 60 minutes. * Diet and exercise go hand in hand: If you have weight to lose, you have to train yourself to be good at exercise. And diet

is definitely important, but it’s not about calorie restriction. Avoid processed foods, and include foods that as are as close to nature as possible, as well as greens and superfoods like mulberries. * Create a good playlist: Working out to music is something that people need to do.

Economic insecurity impacts diabetes control New York, Dec 30 (IANS) People facing difficulty paying for food and medicines find it harder to manage their diabetes than those who are affluent, a study says. Poor diabetes control leads to higher blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure than normal. The findings suggest that mere access to health insurance may not lead to better diabetes care unless people can meet even their basic material needs. "Health care systems are increasingly account-

able for health outcomes that have roots outside of clinical care," said lead author Seth Berkowitz from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. "Strategies that increase access to health care resources might reasonably be coupled with those that address social determinants of health, including material need insecurities," Berkowitz said. The study of 411 patients included data from June 2012 to October 2013 in Massachusetts. The researchers found

that food insecurity and medication under-use were associated with greater odds of poor diabetes control. Greater number of economic insecurities increases the likelihood of poor diabetes control and increased health care use, the findings showed. "Food insecurity and cost-related medication under-use may be promising targets for realworld management of diabetes mellitus," the researchers said. The study appeared online in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Pets could help improve social skills of autistic kids New York, Dec 31 (IANS) Keeping a dog or any other animal at home could help improve the social skills of children with autism and make them more assertive, new research has found. "Kids with autism do not always readily engage with others, but if there is a pet in the home that the child bonds with and a visitor starts asking about the pet, the child may be more likely to respond," said Gretchen Carlisle, research fellow at the University of Missouri in the US. Pets often serve as "social lubricants", Carlisle said.

Dogs and other pets play an important role in individuals' social lives, and they can act as catalysts for social interaction. For the study, the researcher surveyed 70 families who had children with autism between the ages of 8 and 18. "When I compared the social skills of children with autism who lived with dogs to those who did not, the children with dogs appeared to have greater social skills," Carlisle added. "More significantly, the data revealed that children with any kind of pet in the home reported

being more likely to engage in behaviour such as introducing themselves, asking for information or responding to other people's questions," said Carlisle. When pets are present in social settings or a classroom, children talk and engage more with one another. This effect also seems to apply to children with autism and could account for their increased assertiveness when pets are around. The findings appeared in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

Maharastra orders probe in frequent furlough to Sanjay Dutt IN a surprise development, the Maharashtra government Friday decided to inquire the "repeated" furlough leave granted to incarcerated Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde said that the decision follows reports of "preferential treatment" being extended by the jail department to the actor serving a five-year sentence under the Arms Act. "We have information that around four-five other convicts have requested for furlough, but only Dutt has been repeatedly granted the leave. We have to find out under what law he has been granted the furlough," Shinde told media persons here. Since Dutt was extended the facility, then why the same was

"We shall not allow this injustice to anybody. The report I have sought will not favour anybody," he said. Dutt's latest furlough saw him attending a special show of the latest Aamir Khan megahit, "PK", and celeb parties, while exhibiting his new set of eight abs built up in prison. Since May 2013, Dutt is serving the remainder of his fiveyear prison term awarded for illegal possession and destruction of arms before the Mumbai blasts of March 1993. In February this year, the Bombay High Court has also commented on the diligence in granting the actor's requests for furlough which was not visible in case of other convicts who applied for leave. (IANS)

not applicable to others, he asked. Shinde has directed the deputy inspector general (prisons) to conduct the probe and submit his report in the matter, two days after Dutt walked out on a 14-day furlough from Yerawada Central Jail in Pune. Last year, Dutt's furlough attracted controversy when he walked out of jail for 28 days in October on medical grounds. In December 2013, he secured another 28 days' furlough to attend to his ailing wife Manyata, attracting charges of favouritism. Shinde declared that if Dutt can be granted leave again and again, then the probe would reveal about other convicts who have applied for leave but denied the same.

MEGASTAR Amitabh Bachchan says the editing of a film has changed a lot over the years and back in the old days, entering or getting even close to an editing room involved "a fine" or feeding "the staff" or leaving before getting "beaten up". "Actually now being in the company of edit is pretty normal. In those days we were never allowed even 100 meters from the edit room. If per chance you were to find yourself in the edit, you either paid a fine, fed the staff, and left in a hurry before you got beaten up," the 72-year-old posted on his blog srbachchan.tumblr.com. Big B also expressed how "exciting" it would be for him to go back to school and learn new things. "I do believe that the editor and the background score artist are the happiest on film in making. How exciting it would be for me to get back to school and learn the craft that I never could get occasion to. Or to just enrol myself for a couple of months to study and be judged for work done in the process of educating myself," he added. The 72-year-old also desires to learn music, instruments and many more things. "But then there is desire to do so many things - music, instrument, study, writing script, acting and a host of other facilities to be done… Someday I hope to be able to do that...some day yes some day," he said. Indo-Canadian Voice World | Saturday, Jan 03, 2015 family as chili and bell peppers, but is unique in flavor and can range from very sweet to extremely hot. The capsicum has analgesic or pain-relieving properties. Paprika has up to nine times the amount of vitamin C than tomatoes. This high vitamin C content helps to strengthen the immune system, protect against cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and stroke, and help the body absorb and assimilate iron. Paprika has the abil-

ity to aid in digestion and help to improve circulation. Paprika has even been known to help normalize blood pressure and feed the cell struc-

Paprika has antibacterial properties that can protect one from salmonella and E.coli in the digestive tract. Paprika also has the ability to help the body fight common infections. Paprika is an excellent addition to any vegetable dish including soups, fresh salsa, guacamole, roasted vegetables, potatoes, and cauliflower. A pinch can even be added to your morning smoothie or fruit salad for a spicy and immune boosting kick.

Blink assessment must before facial transplant New York, Dec 30 (IANS) Careful assessment of eyelid function can improve results of facial transplants that some people undergo after severe facial trauma, shows a study. "There is no guarantee that the eyelids will function normally after transplantation," said senior author Eduardo Rodriguez from New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center. "Careful and methodical prepara-

tion prior to facial transplantation, and attentiveness to post-surgical eyelid function, is essential to preserving vision in these cases," Rodriguez added. The findings underscore the importance of being extremely methodical in assessing eyelid function because loss of the protective blink reflex can not only compromise vision, but lead to blindness over time.

Face transplantation can dramatically enhance a patient's quality of life after severe facial trauma, but lack of attention to eyelid function and vision can leave patients with impaired vision and other eyelidrelated complications. Careful blink assessment is necessary in planning facial transplant procedures, as well as during and after transplant, and post-transplant revision surgeries, the researchers

noted. In the article, the researchers reported on a patient - Richard Lee Norris of Virginia, US -- with a severe injury to the central and lower face caused by a gunshot injury. "This is the first article addressing blinking in the facial transplant setting," Rodriguez said. “If you cannot blink, your corneas are susceptible to the

extremes of weather and exposure of the corneas while you sleep due to incomplete closure. This ultimately results in painful corneal exposure and potential scarring over part of the pupil which will ultimately impair vision," Rodriguez added. The study appeared online in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Non-human sugar in red meat may promote cancer Washington, Dec 30 (IANS) A team led by an Indian-origin researcher at the University of California, San Diego, has found that a non-human sugar present in red meat promotes inflammation and cancer progression in rodents. During the study, the scientists fed the sugar molecule known as Neu5Gc to mice which significantly promoted spontaneous cancers. The study did not involve exposure to carcinogens or artificially inducing cancers, further implicating Neu5Gc as

a key link between red meat consumption and cancer. "Until now, all of our evidence linking Neu5Gc to cancer was circumstantial or indirectly predicted from somewhat artificial experimental set ups," said principal investigator Ajit Varki, distinguished professor of medicine and cellular and molecular medicine at University of California, San Diego. "This is the first time we have directly shown that mimicking the exact situation in humans - feeding non-human

Neu5Gc and inducing anti-Neu5Gc antibodies - increases spontaneous cancers in mice," Varki noted. Neu5Gc is found naturally in most mammals but not in humans. Varki's team found that red meats (beef, pork and lamb) are rich in Neu5Gc, affirming that foods of mammalian origin such as these are the primary sources of Neu5Gc in the human diet. The molecule was found to be bioavailable too, meaning it can be distrib-

uted to tissues throughout the body via the bloodstream. The researchers had previously discovered that animal Neu5Gc can be absorbed into human tissues. In this study, they hypothesised that eating red meat could lead to inflammation if the body's immune system is constantly generating antibodies against consumed animal Neu5Gc, a foreign molecule. "This work may also help explain potential connections of red meat con-

sumption to other diseases exacerbated by chronic inflammation, such as atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes," Varki noted. "Of course, moderate amounts of red meat can be a source of good nutrition for young people. We hope that our work will eventually lead the way to practical solutions for this catch-22 situation," the authors concluded. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

'Khamoshiyan' to be made into a game SUPERNATURAL erotica "Khamoshiyan" starring Gurmeet Choudhary, Sapna Pabbi and Ali Fazal, will be made into a game soon. The players can choose either Gurmeet or Sapna or Ali characters and play the game through the eyes of the characters. Each character will have a different secret and a different story to narrate.

The film is produced by Vishesh Films and presented by Fox Star Studios and the makers are leaving no stone unturned in promoting the film. "We have a very strategical promotional approach for ‘Khamoshiyan’. We want to make ‘Khamoshiyan’ a franchise and we are devising strategies that will excite and engage audiences more about the film and

make them endorsers of the film. "They have loved the trailer, the songs have been welcomed and we are very excited for the release of the film,” filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said in a statement. The game is set to be unveiled closer to the release of the film which will hit the screens Jan 30, 2015. (IANS)

'Solid Patels' to hit 550 screens in North America

FILMMAKER Saurabh Varma's "Solid Patels" will release in 550 screens in North America alone. The film's teaser was released recently and the new Hindi movie has already managed to generate interest in some overseas territories. "We are thrilled by the feedback the teaser has received, although we know that it's still early days. We are hoping that the next trailer

will create a bigger buzz among the audience since it will reveal more," Raj Malik, senior vice president production and distribution, Krian Media, said in a statement. "Our plans to give the film a big release in non-NRI markets are gaining momentum, and there are enquiries pouring in. 'Solid Patels' will release on 550 screens in North America alone," he added.

Starring Shiv Pandit, Shazahn Padamsee and Ali Asgar, "Solid Patels" has been produced by Krian Media and is slated for April 24, 2015, release. "Comedy is a universal genre as far as a film's entertainment appeal is concerned, and hence it was anticipated that 'Solid Patels' will strike an early chord with the film trade," said Ashish Saxena, chief operating offi-

cer, Big Cinemas. Mike Speath, a leading North America film distributor, said that the teaser of "Solid Patels" was "quite refreshing". "The teaser played in around 100-odd cinemas in the US against 'PK'. The audience in this part of the world are now looking for differentiated entertainment and it seems to be just that," he added. The New 2015 Chrysler 300S Sedan

By Autoreviewman

The Chrysler 300 is the flagship of “Imported from Detroit” style. And for the Spring of 2014, the Chrysler 300S has been updated with even more “blacked out” design elements, a new Ambassador Blue sport interior to complement its world-class ride and handling, exclusive Beats by Dr. Dre audio system and state-of-the-art technology features – all to offer customers a combination of quality, distinct style and craftsmanship that could only be born in the Motor City. Hinting that this Chrysler flagship – built in Brampton, Ontario - was born for those seeking “blacked out” style, the new 2014 Chrysler 300S model features a monochromatic look with specially appointed bodycolor door handles and fascia inserts. New Gloss Black belt molding, daylight opening surrounds and tail lamp bezels are paired with Gloss Black headlamp bezels for a toughened look. A new Black Chrome grille surround features sculpted horizontal grille blades in the same unique finish, while front and rear Chrysler wing badges in Liquid Chrome with black

“Chrysler” centre logos exude a dark elegance appearance. Emphasizing the Chrysler 300S model’s iconic silhouette is the availability of a Gloss Black painted roof. A new 20inch wheel design (19-inch with AWD) features a sculptural appearance and Hyper Black finish that hints at this flagship’s world-class ride and handling capabilities. For a serious look, new “straight shade” Dark Ceramic Gray clear coat joins the exterior color pallet. The interior of the 2015 Chrysler 300S model continues the athletic-luxury theme with 12-way power driver and passenger sport seats, featuring black or all-new Ambassador Blue Nappa leather with silver accent stitching. For added detail, the center console armrest and door armrests are color matched to the seats and feature French seamed stitching in silver. Exclusive use of Piano Black on interior centre stack, instrument panel, steering wheel, gauge cluster and door panel elements provide a uniquely lacquered and highly detailed appearance. This enthusiast-designed interior also features matte carbon hydrographic accents and die-cast steeringwheel-mounted paddle

shifters. The award-winning Uconnect 8.4 multimedia system with the segment’s largest touchscreen is at the centre of the Chrysler 300S model’s interior. Included in this Chrysler flagship sedan is the segment-exclusive, Beats by Dr. Dre. Audio system, with 10-speakers and a 12channel amplifier that integrates the heart of the Beats proprietary equalizer algorithm. Beats by Dr. Dre founders, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, worked side-by-side with the engineering team at Chrysler to design and tune this Chrysler 300 to deliver the high-definition sound required in professional recording studios. Unique to the Chrysler 300S model is the award-

winning 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 engine with a cold-air induction system and sport-tuned exhaust system – enabling the aluminum mill to produce 300 horsepower and 264 lb.-ft. of torque. For even more driving performance, this 300 model includes the segment-exclusive eightspeed automatic transmission with sport mode to fully optimize the steeringwheel-mounted paddle shifters and shifting speed of the transmission. Completing the package are 20-inch all-season performance tires (19-inch with AWD), paired with a touring-tuned suspension with 25 percent quicker steering and 20 percent heavier on-center feel than the entry-level 300 model. Chrysler 300’s AWD sys-

tem seamlessly transitions between rear-wheel drive and AWD with no driver intervention. When AWD is not required, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy while still providing the outstanding fun-to-drive performance and handling inherent in rear-wheel-drive vehicles. For customers who seek more performance, the Chrysler 300S rear-wheel and all-wheel drive models are available with the 5.7-litre HEMI® V8 engine with four-cylinder mode FuelSaver MDS Technology, 363 horsepower and driver-selectable sport mode. To maximize the power and torque of this legendary power plant, a firmer performance-tuned suspen-

sion and larger performance-disc brake system is exclusive on HEMI-powered models. Once limited to premium import vehicles costing twice as much, the segment-exclusive ZF eightspeed automatic transmission expands the worldclass power and fuel efficiency of the 2014 Chrysler 300S, and offers class-leading fuel efficiency with respect to: • Best-in-class V6 highway fuel economy (6.4 L/100 km highway) •Best-in-class V6 allwheel-drive (AWD) fuel economy (11.4 L/100 km city; 7.3 L/100 km) • Best-in-class combined V6 fuel economy (8.9 L/100 km with RWD,9.5 L/100 km with AWD) (Source Chrysler press)

2015 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid - Fuel efficient sedan keeps fuel price pain away! By Autoreviewman Powertrain wise, the 2015 Jetta Hybrid comprises of a 1.4-litre turbocharged gas engine producing 150 horsepower, combined with a 20KW electric motor that draws power from a 220-volt, 60-cell lithium-ion battery pack. Total output for the system is 177 horsepower, with 184 pound-feet of torque. With the electric motor it’s good for a consistent 114 lb-ft of torque on its own. Transmission is via a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automatic Tiptronic transmission. The Jetta Hybrid's EPA combined rating of 5.2 L/100km and a highway number of 4.9 L/100km is an obvious benefit of this power plant. Inside the Jetta Hybrid is as comfortable as its other siblings in the lineup with good seats and the trademark decent ergonomics and high quality. The dash information screens display the hybrid system’s current state, and the tachometer is replaced by a meter that shows whether the powertrain is in “charge,” “eco,” “power” or “boost” state. Using the “E-Mode” optimizes the powertrain for low-speed, electric-only driving handy in low speed traffic crawling where you will be using no gas at all!

Standard equipment on our tester included: 17-inch “Buenos Aires alloys with allseason tires, six way power driver seats, Bi- Xenon headlights with adaptive front light system, Fender premium audio system, KESSY Keyless access with stop/start button, leather seating, blue tooth phone connectivity, LED daytime running lights and taillights, power sunroof, Climatronic dual zone climate control, Multi-function Steering wheel and a host of other features. Base price for the well-equipped model was $35,300 with $300 option of Onyx pearl white paint for a final tally of $35,600 plus taxes and PDI. On the road the Hybrid feels faster and more responsive and quicker than its hybrid competition and seems as fast as the base gasoline engined

2.5-litre five-cylinder equipped Jetta. On starting - the electric motor can enable the car to function in fully electric mode, when fully charged and according to load to accelerate up to 60 km/h or 70 km/h when one programs the more fuel efficient "E-Mode" function. Note, this is for a short time until the gas motor kicks in when the computer determines and smoothly transition the car to all- gas mode. The smoothshifting, seven-speed DSG gearbox is a stand out, providing seamless transitions for easy glitch free cruising. The Hybrid only comes with an automatic transmission. Steering is light and responsive enough, but not as sporty as the GLI model. The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid’s ride is comfortable and quiet at

speed. It is ultimately a nice, relaxing car to drive like all the Jetta models with no vices in particular. Note one feature about hybrid is the way the brakes operate and the Jetta hybrid is no different in this regard. Regenerative brakes use hydraulics and electric-motor

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

resistance to slow the car so generating power that goes back to the battery. However a tradeoff is that the brakes can feel slow and disconnected. The Jetta’s brakes are powerful enough and one need to become adjusted and use foot pedal pressure in a different way to get the hang of when and how to apply them In comparison to fuel efficiency versus the price of a gas engined Jetta, the Hybrid has the edge, but will take longer to pay off the higher price difference in terms fuel saved. With highway economy ratings of 5.5 L/100km for the TDI and 4.9 L/100km for the Hybrid you have to bear in mind that diesel is more expensive than regular gasoline 2015 Volkswagen Jetta hybrid- priced as tested $35,300 plus taxes

2015 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel: Fuel efficient compact sedan has much to offer By Autoreviewman The Chevrolet Cruze has been one of GM’s success stories in the past few years. Chevrolet Cruise Diesel (CD) variant of the Cruze for 2015 as the cleanest diesel powered car GM has ever produced. The CD is distinguished externally from the regular gasoline engined Cruze only by a few minor details on the exterior, namely: an integrated rear spoiler, different wheels, and trunk lid mounted green badge with ‘2.0 TD’ inscribed alongside the ‘Cruze’ name. The Cruze’s Clean-Diesel, engine is a German-sourced and built turbocharged, 2.0litre, four-cylinder unit, making 151 horsepower and an impressive 264 pound-feet of torque. Transmission is a Sixspeed automatic with manual mode driving the front wheels. Fuel economy (litres/100 km) is impressive with a Natural Resources Canada rating 7.5 city/4.2 highway on regular diesel fuel. On the inside, the Cruze cabin is still impressive with soft-closing driver’s doors and a solid feeling interior. The

seats on our tester were trimmed in nice, highquality leather with the driver seat available with power adjusting features. The Cruze’s leather steering wheel houses audio, cruise and Bluetooth controls. Instrumentation is fairly comprehensive with an LCD driver information display, large tachometer, and speedometer. Only the 5,000 rpm redline on the tachometer differentiates the CD from the regular Cruze inside. The front center stack area features cool, silver chrome accents and glossy black plastic trim on top. It houses the optional seven-inch Chevrolet MyLink colour touch-screen and neat,

well-designed controls for the HVAC, entertainment system and input for the Pioneer Premium nine-speaker audio system. Visibility is aided by an available lane assist system and the rear-view camera’s image displayed on its touch screen display. Note; rear park assist is also an option Storage is well accounted for a glove box, cup holders for large bottles in each door; two center console cup holders and a plethora or nooks and cubbyholes In the back, the rear seats are comfortable with decent enough legroom and adequate storage comprising of: small bottle holders and a storage cubby in each

door, a fold-down center armrest with two more cup holders. There are three three-point seatbelts, but the rear bench is a tight squeeze for three large adults. The rear 60/40 seatbacks folded down to make for practicality; however the seats didn’t fold flat because of the thick seat cushions. The trunk’s volume was 376.6 litres (13.3 cu.ft.) On the road, the CD’s cabin was very quiet on all drives and the muted tell-tale clatter of its diesel engine becomes absent once you start driving. The smooth and refined six-speed automatic has plenty of pull and acceleration. Overall ride quality and handling was excellent,

and the compliantMacPherson strut front and Z-Link rear suspension takes a variety of road conditions and surfaces in its stride. The electric power steering is taut and responsive and the Cruze has exemplary road manners on and off highway. The four-wheel anti-lock, disc brakes are strong and linear with good brake pedal modulation. The diesel engine is very impressive in its smoothness and offers effortless acceleration with no drama. In common with all diesel engines, I expect it will be a tough, long-lasting, reliable unit. The Cruze Diesel is rated at 4.2 litres/100 km by Transport Canada com-

pared to the gasoline powered; economy minded Cruze Eco version rated at 4.6. To sum up, the Cruze Diesel is a great buy for the smart buyer in a tried and trusted platform. Starting at a shade under $25,000, the Cruze Diesel is a bargain and if it’s going to be a keeper, as most diesels are, I suggest paying a little more for the luxury loaded version is well worth money in the long run.A very sensible, good looking and smart car to buy.Kudos to Chevrolet. 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Base price: $24,945; as tested, $29,760 including options and destination charge, excluding taxes

2015 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid: New Luxury Crossover Utility is very impressive

By Autoreviewman

The 2015 Infiniti QX60 is a new name for the previous Infiniti JX, a sleek, three-row crossover utility vehicle based on the Nissan Pathfinder. Available as a V6 powered CUV, with a 265horsepower 3.5L V6 mated to a CVT transmission, we tested the new QX60 Hybrid version with a 230-hp 2.5L supercharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 15kW electric drive motor to produce a total of 250 hp, via a CVT transmission. Note; the Canadian QX60 Hybrids all come equipped with AWD as standard equipment. The 2015 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid comes wellequipped at a base price of $48,950. Standard equipment is luxurious and generous with: Intelligent all-wheel drive, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery with heated power-adjustable front seats, power moon roof, intelligent key with pushbutton start, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, seven-inch colour display with rear-view monitor, automatic HID headlights, cruise control, high spec audio system,

power tailgate and rear privacy glass. Inside, the QX60 Hybrid

seat is surprisingly roomy. With the seats folded there’s up to 2,166 L of

numbers are 7.6 / 6.9 L/100 km for the Hybrid, 10.9 / 7.8 for the V6 AWD,

CVT shifts through programmed ‘virtual gears’ for a more sporty experi-

cabin looks suitably luxurious and well designed with sharp leather seats and nice textures, materials and tight fitting panels. Soft-touch materials abound for driver and passengers and the overall ambience is very good. It is not only a good looking cabin, it is also versatile with full sliding second-row seats that feature a steep tipping point to allow easier access to the third row. The passenger’s side of the second row splits 60/40 and the third row

available cargo space compared to 447 L of cargo space when all seats are upright. Nothing much to gripe about, although a few switches seem positioned a little low to reach on the left of the steering wheel. On the road, the QX60 Hybrid feels adequately powered, delivering city fuel economy that’s about 30 percent better than the conventional AWD QX60 and 28 percent better than the conventional front-wheel drive QX60. The official city/highway

and 10.5 / 7.6 for the V6 FWD. The QX60, the Hybrid has a four-position driving mode selector with Sport, Standard, Eco, and Snow modes. In sport mode the

ence whilst in Eco mode the transmission and throttle parameters are changed for fuel efficiency with the transmission keeping revs down. Standard mode is the best

compromise in my opinion. The QX60s ride is composed and comfortable, with decent enough feel, although it errs a bit on the soft side for what would be considered sporty. Braking are pretty good for this hefty 2,098 kg CUV and the regenerative brakes don’t act like typical hybrid brakes that tend to feel like they ‘drag’ when applied. Straight line acceleration is excellent and although the big QX needs care in negotiating tight urban parking areas, it is super easy to park thanks to Infiniti’s clever around view monitor. In closing there is much to like about the QX60. It is luxurious, comfortable, and roomy and an excellent very safety orientated family hauler. Downsides are few and buyer need to weigh up the premium price it commands versus the fuel economy figures. Still, the QX60 is very impressive and nice to drive all day long. Highly recommended.By Autoreviewman
