US can be India's best partner: Obama GUARANTEED Absolute Lowest Prices !
New Delhi (IANS): Recalling the historic address of Swami Vivekananda, US President Barack Obama Tuesday won over his audience by referring to them as "sisters and brothers of India" and said he firmly believes America can be India's "best partner" and together the two nations can bring more prosperity to their people. In his final engagement in India, before flying to Riyadh and then home, the US president addressed a town hall-style meeting in Siri Fort auditorium, where he said: "India and the US are not just natural partners, I believe that America can be India's best partner, I believe that." Ad d re s s i n g a n i nv i te d gathering of young people, civil society and diplomats, the US president reached out to the audience with many Hindi words like "Namastey", "Dhanyavad" and even some references to Bollywood films, which had the crowd ecstatic. He said he was "absolutely convinced" that when both the democracies stand together they can produce more jobs, opportunities and prosperity for their people. "I believe that," he said. Recalling the historic address of Swami Vivekananda, Obama began his town hall meeting with the invocation "sisters and

brothers of India" and talked about how the philosophersage introduced Hinduism and yoga to America in a city that was his hometown. He recalled Swami Vivekananda and his famous speech in Chicago, exactly 100 years ago, where he addressed the gathering as "sisters and brothers of America" and said he was going to address the audience likewise. Obama struck a personal chord with the mainly youthful crowd, saying he was very impressed with the daredevilry of the motorcycle contingent riding Royal Enfield bikes and wished he could ride a bike too. "But the Secret Service does not let me ride motor cycles," he said, and also remarked that he cannot dance as well as his wife Michelle. In a speech where he touched on the need for India and the US to work together on climate change, on how the US can partner India in its growth story, in defence cooperation and becoming partners in the security of the Asia-Pacific region, the American president also stressed on the need for the government to uphold the freedom of religion written in the constitution of both the countries.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi hugs U.S. President Barack Obama as first lady Michelle Obama looks on upon their arrival at Air Force Station Palam in New Delhi on January 25.
He also spoke of the civil nuclear deal that both countries are pushing ahead with, saying it would help bring electricity to homes in India and more clean energy. He said the US wants to partner India in its infrastructure push, building ports, bullet trains, smart cities and "develop technology that we do with closest allies" and also touched on cooperation in tackling terrorism. In the beginning, Neha Buch, a young representative of Indian NGO Prabha, introduced Obama to the audience as a man who is
known for his empathy with common people. He connected with the audience by talking about his own humble roots which he said were in many ways similar to the roots of the Indian prime minister. "If the grandson of a cook can become president, and the tea seller can become the prime minister, so can young people from the humblest of origins dare to dream big and realise their aspirations," he said to loud cheers and applause. He also talked about the importance of women in
society and said a "nation is successful when its women are successful", a remark which again drew strong applause. He talked about how impressed he was with the "incredible women in (India's) armed forces" that he witnessed at the Republic Day parade Monday and also mentioned about the women officer - Wing He also stressed the right to freedom of individuals to profess, practice and propagate religion and said it was important for India with its multiplicity of faith to uphold this fundamental right. Obama said for India it will be more important to uphold the fundamental freedom of religion as, with its diversity, it was an example for the rest of the world. "Nowhere is it more important than in India... nowhere is it going to be more necessary that the foundational value be upheld. India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along lines of religious faith, splinter along any lines and it is unified as one nation; and all Indians whatever their faith go to the movies and applaud actors like Shah Rukh Khan or athletes like Milkha Singh and Mary Kom," he said.

Army officer killed in Kashmir a day after getting medal
Srinagar / New Delhi (IANS): An army officer - who was awarded a gallantry medal on Republic Day - and a policeman were killed in a gunfight Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said. Two Hizbul Mujahideen guerrillas were also killed in the gun battle. Col. Munindra Nath Rai of 9 Gorkha Rifles, seconded to the Rashtriya Rifles, was awarded a Yudh Seva Medal Monday, the army said in a statement in
New Delhi. According to army officials, Col. Rai was commanding his battalion in intense counterinsurgency operations in Kashmir. On receipt of specific information about the presence of two guerrillas in Tral, he swiftly planned and executed an operation to eliminate them. The two included the 'district commander' of Hizbul Mujahideen, the army said. "Leading from the front, Col.
M.N. Rai displayed extreme courage and leadership so as to ensure the elimination of the terrorists but unfortunately made the supreme sacrifice while doing so," the statement said. "In the same operation, one head constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police also died," the statement said, adding that a soldier was injured and was in a critical state. A police officer told IANS in Srinagar that the gunfight
ensued when personnel of the army's 42 Rashtriya Rifles, police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a joint operation in Handoora forest area near Tral town following information about the presence of militants. When the militants were surrounded and challenged to lay down their weapons, they fired at the security personnel that resulted in injuries to Col. Rai, the commanding officer of the Rashtriya Rifles battalion, and a
head constable of police, he said. The injured men were evacuated and taken to a hospital, where Col. Rai succumbed to his injuries, hospital officials said. The security forces continued to retaliate the militants' fire, that led to the death of two militants -- identified as Firdous Ahmed and Shiraz Ahmad of Hizbul Mujahideen. Both the slain militants were locals, the police officer said.
Jaishankar is new foreign secretary, Sujatha Singh's tenure curtailed
New Delhi (IANS): The Narendra Modi government Wednesday appointed India's envoy in the US, S. Jaishankar, as the new foreign secretary, replacing incumbent Sujatha Singh six months before her term was to end. The sudden appointment has echoes of the sudden replacement of India's then foreign secretary A.P. Venkateswaran by then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in January 1987. The appointments committee of the Cabinet, in a decision taken Wednesday, decided to "curtail the tenure" of the incumbent Sujatha Singh, "with immediate effect". The committee, in a note put up on the department of personnel and training, also said
that Jaishankar, an Indian Foreign Service officer of 1977 batch, has been appointed the new foreign secretary for a period of two years. Sujatha Singh had assumed office in August 2013 and was due to retire in August this year. The surprise announcement comes a day after US President Barack Obama left the country after a three-day

Obama's India visit: From 'natural partner' to 'best partner'
New Delhi / Washington (IANS): India and the US saw the forging of a closer partnership, helped in great measure by the personal and visible bonding between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama, as the two sides elevated their ties with a new 'Declaration of Friendship' and also managed to pull off a "breakthrough" agreement on their stalled civil nuclear deal. As Obama accompanied by wife Michelle Tuesday wound up three days of packed diplomatic and public engagements, his state visit where he was the chief guest at India's Republic Day parade has been termed as paving the way for a "new era" in India-US relations. US Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said the signal being sent from Obama and Modi to their own respective governments "is going to catalyse a lot of activity". "It also sends a message to the world, I think, that the US and India are going to be closer partners going forward," he said. "And that's entirely consistent with the president's focus on the Asia-Pacific region and building closer relations with emerging powers, particularly the world's largest democracy here in India." Modi and Obama, who held over three-hour long talks Sunday, within
hours of Obama touching down in New Delhi, announced the muchanticipated breakthrough agreement on implementation of their landmark civil nuclear deal, six years after it was signed. That the two leaders had played a major part in getting the nuclear contact group to tide over their disagreements was indicated by Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, who said the "political leadership played a key role" in pushing forward the agreement for setting up US-built civil nuclear reactors in India. The US also signalled its support for an "early decision on India's entry" into the four multilateral export control regimes -- the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the Australia Group, and the Wassenaar Arrangement -that would facilitate global business with India in the field of civil nuclear energy on which India, which has been largely dependent on energyinefficient and climatically harmful fossil fuels, is hoping to pin its energy security in the coming years. Noted strategic expert C. Uday Bhaskar termed the Obama visit "very successful". “I would characterise this as a very successful visit, and also a reflection of PM Modi’s ability to bring about a

definitive change in the bilateral relationship in a very short time from September 2014 to now. On the nuclear issue, the way the roadblocks have been removed, it came about after Modi came into the chair and brought in the problem-solving mechanism into the relationship. The fact that he was able to infuse the political direction and energy has made all the difference," Bhaskar told IANS. India and the US have also agreed to work closely in the Asia-Pacific region, bringing together India's 'Act East Policy' and the US's re-balance to Asia. "The US welcomes a greater role for India in the Asia-Pacific," Obama said at a town hall-like address before winding up his India visit Tuesday. Bhaskar, director of think tank Society for Policy Studies (SPS), said the IndoUS joint statement on working together in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean "gives a better understanding of the political contours of the relationship". Obama and Modi had "turned a corner for the United States and India" by resolving "issues in a long-stalled nuclear deal that for years kept US nuclear power companies from doing business in India", noted Alyssa Ayres, senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations. "Obama, coming out of this symbolic and important visit to India, should demonstrate that Washington will do its part for India's future by integrating India into economic regimes focused on delivering growth," she wrote in a commentary in Fortune. Influential Politico magazine noting that US and India were getting "serious about nuclear trade", wondered if it was a "'new era' for US-India relations". Along with energy cooperation also came defence cooperation in what is seen by analysts as a strategic shift in emphasis. The US, which has also watched the growing closeness between India and Russia in the co-

President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi production of weaponry and armaments, will now become a key co-producer of select defence equipment with India. The two sides renewed the 10-year Defence Framework Agreement for enhanced defence engagement, and also inked the Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI), under which the two sides have agreed on co-production on four projects. These include the Raven unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and the "roll-on, rolloff" intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance module for the Lockheed Martin-manufactured C-130 J transport aircraft. The two leaders also gave a big push to the economic partnership, by meeting CEOs from both sides during two back-to-back meetings Monday. Obama announced $4 billion worth of new initiatives aimed at boosting trade and investment ties as well as jobs in India. The $4-billion deals include $2-billion financing for renewable energy investments in India through the US Trade and Development Agency and $1 billion in loans for small and medium businesses across India. The camaraderie between Modi and Obama, built up over their past three meetings, including Modi's US visit in September, led to several photo-op moments of bear hugs, "Chai pe Charcha" talks over tea without aides, a walk in the elegant garden of Hyderabad House, chatting warmly like old friends during the Republic
Day parade, and also their first name references of "Barack" and "Modi". Christian Science Monitor saw "signs of a changing US-India relationship" amid pomp on Delhi's Rajpath, and noted "a trip to New Delhi designed to mend old differences had kicked off with a nuclear deal". On Monday, Obama accompanied by Michelle, was chief guest at India's 66th Republic Day parade, during which he was given a glimpse of India's military might, cultural diversity and technological prowess. After the two-hour open air affair, the US first couple later also attended President Pranab Mukherjee's traditional At Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan. On Tuesday, in his final engagement, Obama addressed a town halllike gathering at Siri Fort Auditorium, where he said that he firmly believes that America can be India's "best partner" and together the two countries can bring about more prosperity to their people and set examples for the world. Modi and Obama also spoke on radio, in a joint 'Mann ki Baat' radio address, that was broadcast after he left. The joint radio address is a sequel to the joint article that the two had penned on India-US friendship in the Washington Post during Modi's US visit, with the audience this time being India's teeming millions who are still hooked on to radio for their news and entertainment.

Modi concerned over India's skewed sex ratio
New Delhi (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday expressed concern over the skewed sex ratio in India and blamed a "defect in attitude" towards girls and boys for it. "There is a lot of worry
because of the sex ratio in India. For every 1,000 boys, the number of girls is less. And the main reason for this is that there is a defect in our attitudes towards boys and girls," he said addressing a special episode of Mann Ki Baat, his
regular radio address to the nation which he conducted jointly with US President Barack Obama. Modi said the US president's life was an inspiration as far as the girl child was concerned. "The way he has brought up his
two daughters, the way he is proud of his two daughters..." "In our country too, I meet many families who have only daughters. And they bring up their daughters with such pride, give them such respect, that is the biggest inspiration,"
he said. "I believe that inspiration is our strength," Modi said, adding that to save the girl child, to educate the girl child, "is our social duty, cultural duty, and humanitarian responsibility".

Vodafone case: Government not to contest Bombay High Court order
New Delhi (IANS): The government Wednesday decided not to contest a Bombay High Court ruling that telecom major Vodafone was not liable to pay tax demand of Rs.3,200 crore in a transfer pricing case, Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said and hoped that the decision would boost foreign investors' sentiment. "The cabinet has decided not to move the Supreme Court in this
regard. This is an important decision," he told reporters after a meeting here of the union cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prasad said: "Today, the Cabinet by taking a decision not to challenge in the Supreme Court (the Bombay High Court) order upholding Vodafone India's contention that the transaction, being international, is not amenable to tax... we have given a kind of signal..."
"Mainly, where Income Tax liability is clear, unambiguous, it shall be charged, where it is overstretched without any legal authority, the government will be fair. That is the indication," the minister said. "We welcome the Indian government's decision not to appeal the Bombay High Court ruling. Stability and predictability in tax matters are important for longterm investors such as Vodafone," a Vodafone

Group spokesperson told IANS in an email from Britain. Prasad said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley discussed the matter with the entire Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi and Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar before arriving at this decision. "After legal examination, it was deduced that the Bombay High Court decision was right and this fruitless litigation is avoidable. Therefore, a conscious decision has been taken not to file an appeal in the Supreme Court," Prasad said. The Bombay High Court, in an order Oct 10, 2014, said the UK-based Vodafone is not liable to pay an income tax demand of Rs.3,200 crore in a case relating to transfer pricing. The Income Tax department had asked the company to pay additional income tax, alleging that it had undervalued its shares in its subsidiary Vodafone India Services while transferring them to the parent company. Earlier in November, Attorney General Rohatgi had advided the I-T department not to file an appeal against the Bombay High Court judg-
ment in the Vodafone tax case. Tr a n s f e r - p r i c i n g describes the practice of arm's length pricing for transactions between group companies based in different countries to ensure that a fair price is levied. The Vodafone transaction took place in 2010. The government's highest law official also said that he was in agreement with the view taken by the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in the matter. The tax authority issued a show cause notice to Vodafone India Jan 17, 2014, and later passed an order asking it to pay additional Rs.3,200-crore tax for allegedly undervaluing the shares of its Pune BPO. Vodafone Jan 27 moved the Bombay High Court challenging the I-T order and contended that its transaction on transfer of shares was not taxable under the Indian tax laws. "We have conveyed a message with this decision that shows our fairness. In fact, this decision gives a message to the investors. Investors' confidence has been shaken in the past because of very fluctuating tax policy - where the investors'
view and the government's view were completely at loggerheads," Prasad said. "The government wants to convey a clear message to the investors world over... this is a government where decisions will be fair and transparent within the four corners of law," he added. Cellular Operators' Association of India's (COAI) director general Rajan S. Mathews told IANS: "We applaud the principle on the basis of which the government took this decision. It is a clear signal to the investors. It will help bring in more foreign direct investment in the sector." COAI is the business association of GSM players in India. A. Didar Singh, secretary general, FICCI, in a statement said: "FICCI believes that it is a very appropriate decision and this will go a long way in correcting the perception of the tax administration being adversarial. It will help in creating a conducive tax environment, specially for the overseas investment community." "This decision will also help in uplifting the positive sentiments of the domestic industry further," he added.

Preamble photo puts Modi-government in a fix New Delhi / Mumbai (IANS): An uproar erupted Wednesday over a Republic Day government advertisement featuring the preamble of the Constitution sans the words "secular" and "socialist". But Shiv Sena suggested the words be removed permanently. While the opposition Congress party asked the government to apologies, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government defended itself, saying the picture of the original preamble in the advertisement was as it came into force Jan 26, 1950, two months after being adopted by the Constituent Assembly Nov 26, 1949. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, however, welcomed the exclusion of the two words from the 66th
Republic Day advertisement issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. "We welcome this. Though it may have occurred inadvertently, it was like honouring the feelings of the people of India. If the terms were mistakenly deleted this time, we want them to be removed permanently from the Constitution," Raut told media persons. The BJP, however, dismissed it as the Shiv Sena's view and refused to comment over the issue. "That is their (Shiv Sena's) view, I cannot comment on other party's views," BJP spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao told IANS. The Congress party, meanwhile, said the government should apologise and Prime Minister
Narendra Modi should clarify the government's stance on the two words. "The advertisement issued by Narendra Modiled BJP government reflects an affront to the Constitution and sacrilegious insult to its (the constitution's) ethos," Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Wednesday. "...we demand an immediate apology from the government of India on the issue... We also call upon the prime minister to clarify his stand on his definition and understanding of the words secularism and socialism," he added. Minister of State for Information and B r o a d c a s t i n g Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, however, clarified that the original pre-
amble of the Constitution did not have the words "socialist" and "secular". The minister said a picture of the original preamble was used for the advertisement to "honour" it. He also tweeted pictures of the original preamble and after the 42nd Amendment, which added the words "secular" and "socialist" to it. "This is the original preamble. The words 'Socialist' and 'Secular' were added in 1976," he added. "Let me assure you, we are celebrating the 66th Republic Day, that is, we are celebrating an anniversary of the preamble that was made way back then," Rathore told reporters. "The photograph that
we have put is of the first preamble that our great leaders had made at that point of time," Rathore said. Sudheendra Kulkarni, who was a part of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's office, meanwhile, said that removing the words will be insulting Vajpayee's legacy. "BJP founder-president Bharat Ratna Vajpayee wanted secularism and socialism to be in the party's constitution. Their removal means disowning ABV (Atal Bihari Vajpayee)," he tweeted. "Why are BJP supporters so ignorant? Party's own Constitution (last amended Sep 2012) says it's committed to 'secularism' and 'socialism'," he said in another tweet. "With RSS leaders talk-
ing about making India a 'Hindu Rashtra', PM Modi must reassure nation that he remains committed to secularism," Kulkarni added. Brahmos integration with Sukhoi by March
Bengaluru (IANS): India will integrate the air version of Brahmos supersonic cruise missile with Sukhoi fighters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) by March, an official said Wednesday. "Integration of Brahmos with Sukhois of the IAF is on and will be completed by March, as two of them are being integrated at our Nashik complex," state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd's (HAL) outgoing chairman R.K. Tyagi told reporters here. BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russia joint venture, developed and test-fired the cruise missile July 8, 2014 from the integrated test range at
Chandipur in Balasore district of Odisha. "We have also recently conducted the critical ground vibration test (GVT) on a Sukhoi to modify it for carrying the missile under its fuselage
for combat role," Tyagi said. The missile, named after the Brahmaputra river in India and Moscow river in Russia, has a top speed of Mach 2.8, with a range of 290 km and can carry a 300 kg conventional warhead.
"The vibration tests were conducted in nine configurations to assess the dynamic behaviour of the modified Sukhoi platform," Tyagi said. The missile can be launched from submarines, ships and aircraft. Its sea and ground versions were tested and deployed in service with the Indian Army and Indian Navy. According to test range director M.V.K.V. Prasad, Brahmos is three times faster than the Tomahawk cruise missile of the US. Defence behemoth HAL manufactures the fourth generation Sukhois (SU-30 MKI) under licensed production
from Russian aerospace major Rosoboronexport for the IAF's frontline combat fleet. HAL signed a contract with the Russian firm Dec 24, 2012 for producing an additional 42 Su-30 multirole aircraft, taking the total number to 222, including the 119 it delivered to the air force. As a two-seater, highly manoeuverable, supersonic aircraft for day and night operations in all-weather conditions, Sukhoi is fitted with two turbojet AL-31FP engines and is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics from Russian, western and indigenous sources.
Block sex determination test ads: SC to Google, Yahoo, Microsoft
New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Wednesday directed search engines Google, Microsoft and Yahoo not to advertise, or sponsor any advertisement, on India-centric sex determination tests that are in breach of statutory provisions. "As an interim measure, it is directed, the respondents, namely, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft shall not advertise or sponsor any advertisement which would violate section 22 of the PCPNDT Act, 1994," the bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Prafulla C. Pant said in their order. The court also directed the three companies to withdraw forthwith if they were carrying any such advertisements. "If any advertisement is there on any search engine, the same shall
be withdrawn forthwith by the respondent," said Justice Dipak Misra. Section 22 of the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994, prohibits advertisements related to pre-natal determination of sex and provides for punishment for contravention. Directing the listing of the matter for further hearing Feb 4, the court directed Google, Microsoft and Yahoo to carry out its order on their respective policy pages and terms of service. The interim order came during the hearing of a petition by Sabu Mathew George that sought direction for prohibiting sex determination test advertisements on internet. The court order came after the
central government said the three search engines have "relevant technology and deep-domain knowledge and expertise to block/filter the words/phrases/expressions and sponsored links". "India is suffering so much because of the skewed sex ratio, still there is state of antipathy. You must provide information to government of India," Justice Misra said. Appearing for Google, counsel Shyam Divan told the court that the internet was an uncensored medium and "ordering the blocking of the information is very dangerous as it amounts to pre-censorship". Saying that censorship and legal provisions were two different things, the court said "anything can take the colour and flavour of

Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar told the court it could block or filter the information promoting sex selection and eventual abortion only if the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and IP (Internet Protocol) address is known. He said the exact URLs could be provided by the three search engines to block them at internet gateway for India. Explaining the difficulties in blocking or filtering the information based on "key word search result", the central government urged the court to ask the three search engines to "provide details of measure adopted by them, so far, to block/filter keywords and sponsored links violative of PC-
PNDT Act and amendments thereof". Divan told the court that Google has already clamped down on such advertisements promoting sex determination techniques. He said if some of them slip in, then they would be removed on specific information. Counsel Sanjay Parikh, who appeared for petitioner Mathew George, told the court that throughout the world, the search engines have been directed to block certain services or information which were not permissible to be shown in that country despite the issues of jurisdiction and technical problems being raised. Parikh told the court that he would file a convenience volume of such judgments before Feb 4, the next date of hearing.

23 militants killed in Pakistan airstrikes
Islamabad (IANS): At least 23 militants were killed in airstrikes by the Pakistani army in the country's northwestern tribal area of North Waziristan Tuesday afternoon, media reported. The troops backed by jet
fighters pounded five militant hideouts in Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, a semiautonomous tribal area along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Xinhua news agency reported citing ARY News. Quoting official sources,
media reported that the killed militants include local and foreign militants, but their identities have not been revealed yet. Tuesday's airstrikes are a continuation of the Pakistani military's armed offensive
"Operation Zarb-e-Azb" in North Waziristan, in which over 2,000 militants have so far been killed, according to military sources. Pakistan started the operation to clear insurgent bases from the region last June.
The army stepped up the offensive since the Taliban's massacre of over 140 students and staff at a school in the country's northwestern Peshawar city in December last year.
Pakistan starts arms training for teachers
Islamabad (IANS): Police in Pakistan's northwest Tuesday started imparting arms training to teachers to defend themselves in case of a terrorist attack on schools. The government launched the programme following last month's Taliban attack on an army-run school in Peshawar
that killed over 140 students and staff. The anti-terror police officers formally began the training programme for women teachers in Peshawar to teach them how to use pistols. TV footage showed two women teachers holding pistols at a police centre.
"This training is a must in view of the worst situation. We do not have any other option but to learn basic training," Xinhua news agency quoted a woman teacher as telling reporters at the training centre. The police officers taught the teachers how to hold, load and unload the pistol, point and hit
the target. The government has also decided to issue licences for small arms to the teachers. "We are getting the training to protect ourselves in schools and also at homes," the woman teacher said. The school attack was widely condemned in Pakistan and

ChaiTime What to Expect in First Grade For most kids, first grade is thrilling. Rarely, in fact, will school include so many “firsts”: the first time most kids attend full-day school; the first time they manage a page of math problems; and especially, the first time they read a book independently, cover to cover.
SUDOKU
Of course, your child may have started these tasks in kindergarten, but first grade teachers expect that developmental levels and learning styles will vary widely. They use a variety of approaches, and they know that kids’ speeds vary. One day, you may see nothing; the next day, “Got it!” As one teacher I know says, “First graders are like popcorn!” So what exactly is taught in first grade? Here are some key areas to look for: HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. There are nine zones in the puzzle. Do not enter a digit into a box if it already appears elsewhere in the same zone, row across or column down the entire puzzle. Solve Time: Under 13 min. - Genius; 13-17 min - Scholar; 17-21 min - Smart; 21-25 min - Not bad; 25+ min - Keep practising DIFFICULTY LEVEL : MEDIUM
Reading: Early on, the teacher will assess your child’s level and work from there. In most classrooms, expect a balance of phonics and “whole language”; teachers want kids to develop solid problemsolving strategies for “decoding” (connecting letters to sounds) and
value; to read and write numbers up to 100; and learn early addition, focusing on sums between 1 and 10. Kids will also work with concepts like more, less, same; and will learn basics of telling time. At home, this is a great time to count everything in sight, and try to point to traditional clocks, not just rely on digital time.
“comprehending” (making meaning). The best way to help at home is to read, read, read with your child and keep the tone fun, fun, fun. Do you like picture books? Kids use pictures to build understanding; this is a perfect time to indulge. Writing: By first grade, teachers will guide your child to write complete sentences with capitals and punctuation, and to create simple stories. Be aware, though: spelling will be fearless, and that’s fine; and an early story can be a three-sentence masterpiece. Math: The number 100 takes on huge importance in first grade. Expect your child to learn place
Science and Social Studies: For all children, nature beckons. In first grade, expect units that build science skills by making observations, categorizing same and different, and knowing what’s dead and alive. This all connects to social studies lessons with maps, globes, and simple timelines and graphs showing birthdays, calendars, and school events.
academic standards. Still, explains Amy James, awardwinning author of the Knowledge Essentials series (Jossey Bass, 2005), what’s common across every state is the fact that kids in each grade are around the same developmental age and stage. After analyzing standards across the country, James promises that there are “fundamental similarities…across all fifty states.” In other words, says James, when it comes to the basics, “first grade is first grade.” And, with good teamwork between teachers, parents, and kids, first grade is also a whopping good time.
Answer
Do be aware: while this is a general list, specific units and requirements may vary somewhat by state, and local districts and schools may have somewhat different approaches to the same topics. So in addition to working with the list above, be sure to consult your state’s Department of Education for a complete list of

Swimmer Park faces hearing after positive dope test
Seoul (IANS): South Korean Olympic swimming champion Park Tae-hwan is facing a hearing by FINA, the sport's world governing body, over his positive doping test. The news of Park's positive test emerged Monday, and his Seoulbased agency Team GMP, while confirming the result, blamed it on an injection given by a local hospital, reports South Korean news agency Yonhap. The Korea Swimming Federation (KSF) said Tuesday that Park had actually failed a test administered by FINA, the international swimming governing body, rather than the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), as was first reported.
The KSF added that Park was tested ahead of the Incheon Asian Games in September and was notified of the result in December. Later Tuesday, state prosecutors here said Park received a testosterone injection at the hospital at the end of July. The administration of testosterone is prohibited by WADA. According to prosecutors, officials from the hospital have testified that they gave Park the injection to help boost his hormone level but that they weren't aware that testosterone was a banned substance. On the other hand, Park's camp has told the authorities that the
swimmer repeatedly asked the hospital about the content of the injection and that he was assured that the shot would be clean. Prosecutors said Park underwent questioning last Sunday. Prosecutors said they may indict the doctor who administered the injection, surnamed Kim, on
charges of professional negligence. Team GMP said Monday Park didn't fail multiple doping tests during the Asian Games. It also said it would try to hold the hospital civilly and criminally liable for its action. According to a WADA official, Park will have to attend a FINA hearing to explain his situation. "A world-class swimmer like Park is tested frequently out of competition," the official said of the four-time Olympic medallist and two-time world champion. "The severity of his penalty will be determined after his hearing." FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu said the world swim-
ming body's anti-doping commission would meet in late February. At the 2008 Beijing Games, Park became the first South Korean to win an Olympic swimming gold medal when he took the men's 400 meter freestyle race. He added a silver in the 200m freestyle. He grabbed two silver medals at the 2012 London Olympics in the 200m and the 400m freestyle events. He has also won two world championships in the 400m freestyle. Park is the most decorated South Korean in Asian Games history with 20 medals, including six gold medals.
Wrestling coach Satpal gets Padma Bhushan; Sardar, Sindhu Padma Shri
New Delhi (IANS): Former Asian Games gold medal-winning wrestler Satpal, who also coached inspirational Sushil Kumar, was Sunday named for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award, while national hockey team captain Sardar Singh and two-time badminton World Championships bronze medallist P.V. Sinhdu were among the five sportspersons chosen for this year's Padma Shri awards. Former women's hockey captain Saba Anjum, Arunima Sinha - the first woman amputee mountaineer to climb Mount Everest in 2013 -- and Indian women's cricket team skipper Mithali Raj were the other sportspersons selected for this year's Padma Shri awards. However, India's only two-time individual Olympic medal winner Sushil Kumar and 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, who controversially appeared to be in contention for the country's third highest civilian award, didn't find their names in the list.
The 59-year-old Satpal was a trail-blazer in Indian wrestling, winning the bronze medal in the 1974 Asian Games and then improving his performance by striking gold in the 1982 Asiad held here. Continuing his contribution for the country's ancient sport, he established an 'akhada' in Chhatrasal Stadium, which produced Sushil, who also became a world champion in 2010. Sixteen-time national champion Satpal was conferred the Arjuna Award in 1974, Padma Shri in 1983, and the Dronacharya award in 2009 in a glittering career both as a player and coach. Among the Padma Shri award winners, the 28-year-old Sardar Singh led his side to the nation’s first Asian Games gold in 16 years by defeating arch-rivals and defending champions Pakistan in the final. With this achievement India also became the first team to qualify for the 2016 Rio
Olympics. Under the talismanic centrehalf Sardar’s captaincy, India also defeated Wold Champions Australia 3-1 in a Test series Down Under and also won the silver at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He has represented India in more than 200 international matches. Badminton protege Sindhu’s most notable performance last year was winning the bronze at the Copenhagen World Championships. With the medal, she became the first and only Indian ever to win two World medals, that too back-to-back in the sport’s most prestigious tournament. The teenager maintained a top10 ranking for most of the year and also reached the finals of India Grand Prix Gold in Lucknow in January 2014. However, she peaked when she won the Macau Open GP Gold crown in November. The Hyderabadi also consistently defeated top players
and backed it up with the Commonwealth Games silver. Former national women's hockey star striker Saba Anjum -- a true rags to riches story -- has converted the Arjuna Award she received two years ago into India’s fourth highest civilian honour. She was part of the 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medal winning team and also clinched the Asia Cup gold in 2004. During her 13-year-long international career, she scored 92 goals in 200 matches. Arunima was a national volleyball player who was pushed out of a running train by thieves in 2011 while resisting them. One of her legs was amputated below the knee as a result. While still being treated in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here, she resolved to climb Mount Everest. She contacted Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest, in 2011 and signed up for training
under her at the Uttarkashi camp of the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) 2012. With a prosthetic leg, Sinha climbed Island Peak (6150 metres) in 2012 as preparation for her ascent of Everest. India’s women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj was a consistent performer in 2014. The dependable middle-order batter in India’s captain in all three forms of the game. In January 2014 she led her side to a 3-0 win in an One-Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka. In April, she also led India to book a place in the 2016 World Twenty20 by beating Pakistan in qualification playoff. Also, she helped India beat England in their first Test match in eight years in Wormsley in 2014 August, with Mithali hitting the winning runs. She was also nominated for the ODI and T-20 Women’s Cricketer of the Year by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in November.

ICBC launches B.C. campaign to help keep pedestrians safe this fall and winter
ICBC is launching a new education campaign across the province to help keep pedestrians safe this fall and winter when crashes involving pedestrians increase significantly in B.C. On average, 76 per cent more pedestrians are injured in crashes from November to January every year when conditions are dark and weather is poor compared to June to August in B.C.* ICBC is partnering with TransLink, Transit Police and BC Transit with new advertising featured on SkyTrains and in buses across B.C. to reach pedestrians on transit. ICBC and community policing volunteers throughout B.C. will also be handing out pedestrian safety reflectors and tips at events throughout the province to help educate pedestrians about the importance of being visible to drivers in dark, fall conditions. In a new ICBC survey, 76 per cent of drivers and 83 per cent of pedestrians stated they’re concerned about hitting a pedestrian or being hit by a driver in an intersection. Yet,
mid-block. Follow pedestrian signs and traffic signals and never cross once the signal has turned yellow or red.
on average, 75 per cent of crashes with pedestrians still occur at intersections in B.C. "Nearly one in five people killed in car crashes every year in B.C. are pedestrians and most of these deaths are preventable,” said Metro Vancouver Transit Police Chief Officer Neil Dubord, Chair of the Traffic Safety Committee of the British Columbia Association of Chiefs of Police. “Drivers can play a key role in preventing these crashes by staying focused on the road and avoiding distractions. As a pedestrian, it’s important to make eye contact with drivers before crossing – don’t assume a driver has seen you." "The majority of pedestrianrelated crashes happen at
intersections so we're asking drivers to be vigilant in looking for pedestrians this fall and winter," said John Dickinson, ICBC's road safety director. "Pedestrians also need to do their part by making sure they're seen by drivers and actively looking and listening for oncoming vehicles." Tips by road user: Drivers •Be ready to yield to pedestrians – especially at intersections and near transit stops where pedestrians may not use crosswalks. •When turning at an intersection, look twice to make sure there are no pedestrians crossing. •Give yourself extra time and space to stop in case a pedes-
trian suddenly crosses the street. Pedestrians •Look. Always make eye contact with drivers. Never assume that a driver has seen you. •Listen. Focus your full attention on what's happening around you. Remove your headphones and never talk, text or use electronic devices in an intersection or while crossing. •Be seen. Wear reflective clothing or use reflective gear to make it easier for drivers to see you. •Be extra cautious at intersections. Watch for vehicles turning left or right through the crosswalk. Always cross at designated crosswalks – never
Transit users •Make sure that you're visible when you're walking to and from your transit stop. Wear clothing or carry reflective items so drivers can see you in all weather conditions. •Be cautious at transit stops. Always cross at designated crosswalks – not mid-block. Avoid running for the bus and taking shortcuts. Quick facts: •ICBC looked to Scandinavian countries where pedestrian reflectors have been widely used since the 1970s and are credited with helping to reduce pedestrian crashes. The low-light conditions in B.C. in fall, winter and early spring are similar to those found in Scandinavian countries. •The top contributing factors for drivers in crashes involving pedestrians are: distraction, failure to yield the right of way and weather.
Injured in a crash that wasn’t your fault? We’ll help facilitate a treatment plan with you and your medical professionals – in most cases, without any out-of-pocket expenses to you. Then, when you’re ready, we’ll discuss a settlement plan, one based on your personal circumstances, the nature of your injury, lost wages, and the impact on your lifestyle. After all, being there for you, is why we’re here. Call Dial-a-Claim at: 1-866-906-6163. icbc.com/punjabi/claims

Happy time for women in Indian cinema: Shabana
VETERAN actress-social activist Shabana Azmi has expressed hope for women in Hindi cinema, observing that roles are becoming substantial for them and are being written for all age groups. "I am very hopeful. I feel the roles are becoming substantial in films that are women-centric, but even within the films themselves," Shabana said here Sunday evening at a special session of the Kolkata Literary Meet. The multiple National Award winner highlighted the fact that the current crop of films are incorporating characters of working women, and that
women artists are demanding meatier roles. "Today even in gangster movies, women are working...I
think there is a greater understanding within the women artists themselves where they are demanding more meat if
Wonderful: Jaya Bachchan on filmmakers' fancy for literature
VETERAN actress Jaya Bachchan said it's a "wonderful" trend in Indian cinema that filmmakers are going for subjects based on published literature and said this augurs well for women in cinema. "I think a new trend that has started is
that people have started taking subjects from published literature in our country, Indian literature or even others (like William Shakespeare's works). "That's a wonderful trend because once we go back to literature, we will naturally go back to a lot of things that should be done the way it should be done," she said at a special session of the Kolkata Literary Meet here Sunday evening. Jaya also appreciated the different genres of cinema that have come up. "I am hopeful. We are looking at different kinds of cinema," she said in response to the progress of women in cinema. Jaya had a supporting role in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film "Mahanagar" (1963) at the age of 15 and was seen in the lead role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Guddi" in 1971. Quizzed on the relevance of her films she said: "I don't think it ('Guddi') is relevant today but 'Mahanagar' is." (IANS)
not necessarily in terms of the length, but definitely in terms of what the character is," she said. Also, various age groups are being portrayed in Hindi cinema today, Shabana said. "I think it is a very important time for Hindi cinema because roles are being written for all age groups. Earlier 30 was the end of a women's career. But today the roles are opening up and they are available, so I do think that happy times are here," she said. The reason, according to Shabana, is the advent of multiplexes. "The advent of multiplexes has thrown up choices.
"Why did we have a certain kind of film in the 1970s and 1980s? Because the intent of the producer was to cater to the lowest common denominator because you wanted to get the maximum number of people in the audience. "Today it is possible to cater to a certain section of the audience and still make your money through your multiplexes, through urban centres. There are films which don't only depend on the lowest common denominator and that is opening up the way for lots of different things that are also being made," she said. (IANS)
Soha ties the knot with Kunal
ACTRESS Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kemmu exchanged vows Sunday here. The wedding took place at their Khar residence in
the presence of a registrar and family members like brother Saif Ali Khan, sister-in-law Kareena Kapoor and mother Sharmila Tagore.
Need A Science Tutor For Elementary or High School?
Soha had earlier shared that the ceremony would be a "small wedding in the presence of our family members". The Mehendi ceremony took place on Friday that was attended by friends including actress Neha Dhupia, who had shared photographs of Soha who was "chillin like a Villian" during the prewedding function. Soha, who believes that people need to have "a sense of commitment, maturity and infinite patience to make a marriage last", got engaged to Kunal in Paris last year. (IANS)

MOVIE REVIEW
Two Days, One Night (PG) ****
Friendship is put to the ultimate (?) test in Two Days, One Night. Consider this small French gem from Mongrel Media to be topical and heart-provoking. Fine drama of a European flavour perfect for all cultures is now unfolding at the International Village Cinemas. Work is important to most people. Lose your job or take a pay cut is heard all too often in the western world. Spry Sandra enjoys her job at a solar panel plant in cosmopolitan France. Good in any role but excelling here is Marion Cotillard who sizzles as the left
behind woman whose job and future is put on the line. Couple this situation with some medical problems and a small family and you can sense the frailty of the situation. What makes Two Days, One Night so effective is the choice given this factory worker: suck up losing your pay check or try to remedy the situation. Egged on by her husband Sandra embarks on a seemingly impossible journey to get her fellow employees to help her out. Here the pressure builds as the one on one talks between a host of diverse people shines a
bright light on racism, greed and a host of other human conditions which at times seem so inhumane. What's right and wrong in this debate may well stir lots of powerful emotions among audiences. Smart and stylish direction from Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne really hits home and dare I say turns into a rallying cry for the less fortunate. Long on drama with a few light touches and some surprise musical accompaniments ensures Two Days , One Night will leave you with tears and hopeful.
Kate Moss makes grand entrance at party
London, Jan 28 (IANS) When it comes to making a glamorous entry, supermodel Kate Moss doesn't miss a chance. She arrived at a birthday party after splashing out 6,000 pounds on a private helicopter. The model was cheered when she touched down at the Craigellachie Hotel in the Scottish Highlands with her husband Jamie Hince, celebrating nutritionist Rose Ferguson's birthday Sunday, while fellow guests Noel Gallagher,
Nick Grimshaw and Sadie Frost headed to the venue on budget airline flights from London's Gatwick. "Kate had been at a fashion show in Paris on Friday, so she was flown in on a private jet at the start of the weekend. It was the easiest way to get up there. But everyone else was coming from London so most of them just took EasyJet flights. Nobody had any airs and graces about it. "When they saw Kate and Jamie Hince chopper in, everyone cheered, she
really did arrive in style, even if the others didn't manage quite such a glamorous entrance," a source told mirror.co.uk. Whilst Rose's guests could have saved money on their flights, they didn't hold back when drinking and some downed 3,000pound bottles of Grants Whiskey until 10 in the morning. Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream acted as DJ at the bash and Frost, who couldn't get enough of the bagpipes, even persuaded the piper to let her have a go at the instrument. "The whole lodge was taken over, but the gang still descended on the Copper Dog bar area downstairs. "The party was raging until gone 10 a.m., and all the guests, not just Kate, got a bottle of the 3,000pound whisky with their names embossed on it. A piper played 'Happy Birthday' to Rose," the source added.

Varma changed definition of filmmaking: Kay Kay Menon ACTOR Kay Kay Menon, who worked with Ram Gopal Varma in "Sarkar", says the filmmaker gave a new definition to filmmaking with movies like "Satya" and "Rangeela". "With 'Satya', 'Rangeela' and 'Sarkar' he changed the definition of filmmak-
ing," Kay Kay told IANS. "Our industry went into coma after watching these films. People felt we will make same kind of films and make money, but Ram changed it all," he added. Kay Kay, who has been in the industry for almost 20 years, has also been
appreciated by many. But he says he doesn't take success too seriously. "It's been 20 years and it's a normal journey. After too much of praise, I don't take success to my head and after too much of criticism, I don't get upset," he said. (IANS)
Dhanush an accomplished actor: Amitabh MEGASTAR Amitabh Bachchan says he has always admired his "Shamitabh" co-star Dhanush as an actor. "I have always admired him as an actor. I have seen his south films. I have seen 'Raanjhanaa' also. He is a very accom-
plished actor and he is a huge star," Amitabh told reporters here. The 72-year-old also believes that Dhanush is a "wonderful choice" for the role, which is said to have been offered to Shah Rukh Khan first, in "Shamitabh".
"Now that I have almost seen the product of our film, I do feel that he is a wonderful choice," said Big B. Directed by R. Balakrishnan aka Balki, "Shamitabh" also features Akshara Haasan. (IANS)

Yeh Hai India' an effort to showcase India's spirit SINGER Shaan has lent his voice to "Yeh Hai India" and says the film is a great attempt to showcase the spirit of our country. "Raja Hasan, who basically is a fabulous singer and has given music in many regional films, is entering Bollywood with 'Yeh Hai India'. I am very proud to be a part of the film as it is a very good attempt to showcase the
spirit and image of our country which is very positive and clean," Shaan told IANS. "India is progressing in many fields and attracting world's attention," he added. Shaan has praised Hasan's composition and said that the song is very melodious, lyrical and has a universal appeal. "Yeh Hai India" is directed by G.K.Yogesh. (IANS)
ACTRESS Jaya Bachchan, daughter of noted journalist and writer Taroon Coomar Bhaduri, who chronicled the lives of the Chambal valley dacoits in central India, says though all films made on dacoits were based on her father's works, no one gave him any credit. "All films made on dacoits were borrowed from my father and this is one regret he always had... nobody ever gave
him the credit, Jaya said here Saturday at the Kolkata Literary Meet. "Everyone of them came and met him, discussed a lot of things, but nobody gave him any credit... all... A to Z (except the film on 'Abhishapta Chambal' itself)," Jaya added. It is said that the late Amjad Khan read "Abhishapta Chambal" while preparing for the role of bandit Gabbar
Singh in the cult Bollywood classic "Sholay", which also featured Jaya. Recalling Bhaduri's dedication to document the Chambal dacoits, Jaya said: "For days, he would be away. He lived with them, travelled with them and fought for them with the government. He would come back with their pictures... each a legend like Robin Hood." (IANS)

HEALTH
For Your Health
Potatoes are a nutritious, healthy food that are rich in vitamins A, C, & B-complex and minerals such as manganese, iron, magnesium, copper, and potassium. Potatoes contain an antioxidant called quercetin which has anti-cancer and car-
dio-protective properties as well as a storage protein called patatin which has been shown to exhibit activity against disease causing free radicals. Potatoes are an excellent source of B6, a vitamin which is essential for the formation of

almost every new cell in the body. Vitamin B6 also is a vital component for the neurological system and for the creation of amines which are neurotransmitters that send messages from one nerve to the next. This makes potatoes an important food for those who are heavy thinkers and those recovering from stress damage and adrenal exhaustion. They are also particularly beneficial for depression, insomnia, sleep disorders, brain fog, and stress related illnesses. Potatoes are also known to be good for promoting cardiovascular health and are highly beneficial for reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis, and COPD. Potatoes themselves are virtually fat-free and packed with dietary fiber which helps to prevent constipation
and protect the colon from polyps and cancer. Their high fiber content also helps to lower blood LDL cholesterol and keep blood sugar levels stable and within normal range. Fresh raw potatoes are a rich source of vitamin C, enzymes, minerals, and antibiotic properties and can be juiced with fresh tomatoes, lemons, or
other vegetables for additional health benefits. Steamed potatoes are the most healthy form of cooked potato and will ensure that they retain most of their vitamins and minerals and remain a strongly alkaline, healing food. Potatoes can be readily found at your local grocery and health food stores.

Pakistani, Afghan commanders begin border security talks
Islamabad (IANS): Top Pakistani and Afghan commanders have opened talks on security issues, focusing on border management amid growing anti-terror cooperation, the military said Monday. Commander of the Afghan Border Police Shafiq Fazli is leading a 10-member delegation in talks with Pakistani counterparts. Fazli, along with his deputy Sher Ali Shahryar and eight other border police officials, arrived in Pakistan for a five-day official visit Sunday. "Issues related to border security will be discussed during the ABP delegation's visit to Pakistan," Xinhua quoted a Pakistan army statement as saying. The Afghan security officials are also scheduled to visit some Pakistani military areas. The Afghan security officials arrived in Islamabad just days
after the visits of two top Pakistani military commanders to Afghanistan who had discussed cooperation between the security forces to effectively manage the border. Pakistan and Afghanistan have nearly a 2,500-km porous border and militants routinely take advantage of the difficult terrain to cross the border whenever security forces of
either country launch any operation against them on their respective side of the border. Both countries have now decided to coordinate with the other if they start security operation on their side of the border to frustrate attempts by the militants to escape to the other side. The Pakistani army is presently battling the Taliban
and other militant groups in North Waziristan tribal region and Afghan forces are fighting the Taliban in Dangam district in eastern Kunar province, bordering Pakistan. Afghanistan's ambassador to Pakistan Janan Mosazai said Saturday that Afghan forces have killed nearly 200 militants in Kunar. Pakistani officials said Pakistani Taliban fighters have taken shelter in Kunar and other Afghan border areas and launch attacks from there. The Afghan authorities also complain that Afghan Taliban also cross into Pakistan whenever they start action against them. In a sign of growing militaryto-military cooperation, the two neighbours have now decided to open two coordination centres along the border to share intelligence and closely monitor the illegal cross-border
movement of the Taliban and other militants. The savage Dec 16 attack by Taliban bombers at the Army Public School in Peshawar in which over 140 students and teachers were massacred has led to closer cooperation between the two countries on tackling terrorist threats. The Afghan Taliban have also carried out several deadly attacks in Kabul and other areas following the inauguration of President Ashraf Ghani late September. They launched a major offensive in Kunar's Dangam district last month. Dangam borders Pakistan's northwestern Dir district. The two countries have also increased cooperation following the withdrawal of most of the foreign troops from Afghanistan and end to the NATO combat mission to avoid any instability.
Pakistani political party alleges extra-judicial killing
Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan's Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) Rabita committee or central coordination committee
Tuesday said party workers were being tortured, killed, and their bodies dumped, media reported. The committee said that as
many as 35 workers have been killed extra-judicially while dozens of others remained missing, Geo News reported.
Activist Syed Faraz Alam was killed in police custody for not giving bribe money, it said. The MQM is overall the fourth
largest party in the National Assembly of Pakistan and the second largest party in Sindh with 37 out of 130 seats.
Pakistan seeks help from China, US to avoid blackouts
Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan has sought support from China and the US to introduce technology that could prevent nationwide power breakdowns due to sabotage, Water and Power Minister
Khwaja Mohammad Asif said at a news conference. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had ordered the finance ministry to urgently arrange for PKRs.4,000 crore
(nearly $400 million), last week, to import petrol and furnace oil for two months in the wake of the fuel crisis that has hit the country. Asif said the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID) and the China State Grid had been approached for technical assistance to the isolated national grid from localised terrorist
activities, and to avoid complete blackouts in future, Dawn online reported. Pakistan is facing acute fuel and power shortages for the last 15 days.

Next time 'Chaiyya chaiyya': SRK to Obama BOLLYWOOD superstar Shah Rukh Khan is delighted that US President Barack Obama incorporated his famous "Senorita" dialogue during an address in the national capital. Now King Khan hopes that Obama will groove to his hit number “Chaiyya chaiyya” some day. Obama, who was in India on a three-day state visit, recollected that when he had first visited India in 2010, he had experienced some 'bhangra'.
Giving his speech a Bollywood twist, he delivered Shah Rukh's dialogue from the 1995 movie "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge". "Senorita, bade bade deshon ... You know what I mean," he said. Even though he cut the popular dialogue short, Obama managed to draw a huge applause and cheer from the audience. For SRK, one of Bollywood's top-rated filmstars and a glob-
al icon, it was a moment to feel proud. “Proud 2 b part of the gender & religion equality speech of Pres. Obama. Sad he couldn't do the Bhangra... next time Chaiyya Chaiyya for sure,” Shah Rukh tweeted. Composed by Oscar-winning music maestro A.R. Rahman, the popular dance number is part of the “Dil Se” sound-track. (IANS)

and our highlight at the 2015 Toronto Auto Show is sure to provide excitement on the show floor,” says Christian Meunier, President, Nissan Canada Inc. “The all-new TITAN was developed with core Nissan planning, design, engineering and manufacturing teams whose goal was to create an authentic fullsize truck with a bold and commanding presence. We are excited to bring Canadians something that honours Nissan’s rich truck heritage, which goes back more than 55 years in North America, while moving forward into

today’s technology-driven era.” Scheduled to be available in dealerships later this year, the new TITAN XD Crew Cab is the first of three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offerings and five grade levels to be available in The next generation Nissan TITAN is designed to be a warrior for “warriors” – both in look and in performance with a tough and rugged design and new configurations. The TITAN XD Cummins diesel is the first commercial application of the new Cummins M2 two-stage turbo sys-
tem, which helps reduce traditional turbo-lag through precision balancing between highpressure and low-pressure turbos. The patented Rotary Turbine Control provides solid performance across the powerband and manages exhaust gas temperatures. Rather than emulating any of the full-size pickups on the market today, including the current Titan, the designers wanted new TITAN to reflect Nissan's design language – but on a much larger scale than done before. The resulting design is more
anatomical, rather than architectural. The front looks like a mask and the sides are shaped, not slabs, with the whole presence anchored by an emphasis on the very large and mechanicallooking wheels, which were inspired by big boxend wrenches. The TITAN's interior both mirrors the exterior's bold, powerful work truck image and departs from it, with a masculine yet premium quality. The combination of durability and comfort is found throughout the spacious interior, along with a marriage of quality materials and attention to detail. Nissan’s innovation leadership continues with TITAN’s cuttingedge available towing, utility features and driving aids, including an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Integrated gooseneck tow hitch, Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows oneperson hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights.

Ronaldo should be punished for violent conduct: Neymar Barcelona (IANS): Brazilian and Barcelona forward Neymar has asked the Spanish football authorities to give stricter punishment to Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo for his violent conduct on the field of play against Cordoba. Ronaldo was sent off after he kicked defender Edimar Fraga and slapped Jose Crespo during a Spanish La Liga encounter Saturday which
Madrid won 2-1. Ronaldo could escape with a two-match ban -- given to every red card offender. “It's clear we cannot do that under any circumstances. He must be punished because of the aggression. It is difficult because sometimes there is provocation,” Neymar was quoted as saying by bbc.com. Drawing comparison to Frenchman Zinedine Zidane's
infamous head-butt in the 2006 World Cup final and himself, Neymar said: ”It happened to Zinedine Zidane, it happened to me. Nobody has the coolness to remain calm 100 percent of the time. We must think with our heads. I think he should be punished.” “Those of us playing as forwards are exposed to provocations and intimidation and sometimes you lose your
nerve.” “It is the referee's responsibility to protect players on the pitch, particularly when they are targeted by hard challenges. Hard tackles must be punished,” added the 22-yearold. After the sending off, the Portuguese star apologised for his aggressive behaviour on Twitter.
England are steadily improving, says assistant coach Perth (IANS): England cricket team's assistant coach Paul Farbrace Tuesday said the Eoin Morgan-led team is working hard and improving all the time to give themselves the best chance of winning the World Cup which has eluded them from the beginning.
The Englishman who was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s success last year, when they clinched both the Asia Cup and World Twenty20 titles, said anything was possible if they make it through to the knock-out stages of the quadrennial tournament. “I wouldn’t sit here now and
say we’re going to win the World Cup. What I would say is if you get through to the knock-out stages anything is possible,” Farbrace was quoted as saying by bbc.com. “The aim is to get to the quarter-final and once you do then literally anything can happen. We
know we’re improving all the time, we know we’re working really hard and we want to give ourselves the best chance we possibly can.” The 47-year-old also added that the team’s progress is exciting and they would be treating the knockout game against India
this Friday in the tri-series as a great opportunity to test the squad in a pressure game. “I’d be foolish to say we’re developing that well we’re going to win the World Cup. But I do think there’s a lot of signs of really exciting progression," he pointed out.
Feared not getting international ton at Eden: Sourav
Kolkata (IANS): Former India captain Sourav Ganguly Wednesday revealed that his biggest fear in his cricketing career was to have not scored an international hundred at his home ground, the historic Eden Gardens. "My biggest fear was that I thought I would never get a hundred at the Eden. But then it came against Pakistan," Ganguly said. The southpaw overcame his worst fear Dec 1, 2007 when he scored 102 in the
first innings of the second Test against the arch rivals, that was eventually his last Test match at the ground. The left-hander has a solitary century at the hallowed ground having played eight Test matches and four One Day Internationals. Speaking during the launch of the book "Eden Garden-Legend and Romance" by former Bengal cricketer and author Raju Mukherjee, Ganguly felt nostalgic tracing his journey as a cricketer from Dhukiram
coaching centre to his first match at the Eden where he scored a century in an under-15 match. He, however, said he preferred the old stadium than the revamped one, just because of its sheer vastness. "I have seen the ground transform, the old stand and now the renovated one, although I prefer the old one because of the vastness and the magnanimity of the stadium," he said. The 42-year-old said the
ground has always been "special" to him, and the win against Australia was one of his best ever experiences there. Such is the attraction of the 150-year-old stadium, that England batsman Alastair Cook had asked Ganguly to host England at the ground. "Alastair Cook once asked me, if I could get a match for them at the Eden Gardens. I had to make him understand I was just a player and it was not in my hands."
