Gandhinagar, Gujarat (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said every NRI is like a "shakti" and if the strength of the entire diaspora can be consolidated, it could become a driving force for India's progress. Addressing the inauguration of the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here, the world's largest annual gathering of people of Indian origin, Modi also said that he has fulfilled his promise to the diaspora of merging the Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards. He exhorted the diaspora to come and contribute to India's success in any way possible, including knowledge, expertise or skills. He mentioned in particular, the Namaami Gange project to clean River Ganga, and said 40 percent of India lived by and survived on the river. He said he was sure all NRIs would be inspired to contribute to this cause. Modi said the world is ready to "embrace India" and cited as an example the fact that his proposal at the UN to institute an international yoga day was supported by a record 177 nations and in just 100 days. "We have a lot to give to the world, we only lack the confi-

dence," he said, calling upon NRIs across the world to forge and take pride in a common identity and heritage, and to use this strength collectively. He said even if a solitary NRI is present anywhere in the world, India is alive and present in that corner of the world through him or her. Modi said he had met representatives of 50 countries since assuming office in May last year, and he could say with confidence that all nations rich or poor across the world today feel that their goals and objectives can be met in partnership with India. He said then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had proposed the idea of starting a PBD and it was begun in 2003. Referring to the apparent slackening in enthusiasm during the past few years to the annual gala, Modi said that "in between,
little little, people did not feel like coming. Few would come and a few came because they had to come; but I would come regularly," to laughter among the crowd. "We are extremely proud of our diaspora. They have made India global and their strong values have endeared them wherever they have gone," he tweeted later. Earlier, Modi welcomed Guyana President Donald Ramotar, South African Foreign Minister Maite NkoanaMashabane and Mauritius Vice Prime Minister Showkutally Soodhun who were on the dais with him. He later held bilateral meetings with them. He recalled how Indian festivals such as Holi and Diwali are enthusiastically celebrated in Guyana, that Jan 8 also happens to be the founding day of the African National Congress in South Africa and Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary Oct 2 is observed in Mauritius with even greater vigour than in India. A PBD Kendra is also coming up in New Delhi and would be inaugurated soon for the benefit of pravasis, he said. Nearly 4,000 delegates from 44 countries are attending the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2015.

Pune / Mumbai (IANS): Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who returned to Yerawada Central Jail in Pune Thursday to serve the remainder of his term after 14day-long furlough ended and there was no response to his request for an extension, did not need to surrender. Maharashtra home ministry officials said that they were awaiting a reply from the police department on the reasons behind Dutt's fresh request, made Dec 27, for an extension. This came amid indications that the government was unwilling to court further controversy over the frequent furloughs granted to the actor. Dutt, who arrived from Mumbai to Pune by a flight, stepped out of the airport, and boarded a vehicle to go and surrender to the jail authorities. However, after more than a couple of hours of staying around the jail premises, he turned away from there and was expected to return home to Mumbai. The ostensible reason was that a government official had said that it was not necessary for him to go back to jail till a decision was taken on his application for extension of his furlough, which had started Dec 24. Dutt's lawyer Subhash Jadhav told media persons that as a law-abiding citizen, Dutt had returned to jail, but senior prison officials said he need not surrender till his application for extension was pending.

Occupants of Pakistani boat suspected terrorists: Parrikar New Delhi (IANS): The people of a Pakistani vessel that blew up and sank off the coast of Gujarat were "suspected terrorists" and did not appear to be smugglers, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said Monday, as the incident on the open sea continued to hog headlines amid border tensions between India and Pakistan. He also confirmed that another boat was also traced but it was in international waters. "The most important factor, if you ask me, why I will classify them under suspected or probable terrorists is because they have committed suicide... 'Harakiri'. No one is going to be killing himself unless you are motivated enough to do that," Parrikar told reporters on sidelines of an event here. "A normal boat even carrying some drugs can
throw away some drugs and surrender," he said. Parrikar's remarks came as questions arose in the media on the nature of the "illicit transaction" being carried out by the suspicious vessel in the Arabian Sea. The Congress, which has asked the BJP-led government to come clean on conflicting reports in the media, Monday said every citizen of the country has the right to question the government. Parrikar said he would not speculate on the "cargo" of the vessel but "their activities do not fit description of a smuggler". "There are a lot of speculations... I don't intend to be part of speculations. Except saying one very important aspect that the location is not normal route for the fishing boats... Even the smugglers carrying contraband
and gold, whatever.. even drugs, they normally take a route which is busy. Because they can mingle with the other boats and pass off as one of the fishing boats," he said. The boat was almost stationary at an "isolated location" for more than 12 hours and perhaps longer than a day, he said, noting this "does not indicate any smuggling type of activity but some other kind of activity... we are not sure what is the other kind". "Secondly smugglers don't keep in touch with a maritime Pakistani agency or a maritime security of Pakistan or their army or international contacts," he said. He said the Coast Guard just followed the standard operating procedure. "The Coast Guard could not have done any better because the operating instructions are very clear. It was dark and if it (the
boat) was laden with explosives, which appears to be partly at least correct, it could have induced injuries and damage to the Coast Guard," he said. Asked about the presence of a second boat, the minister said it was in international waters. According to the defence ministry, the suspicious boat was intercepted by the Coast Guard based on an intelligence input Dec 31, and it was traced in the Arabian Sea, 365 km off Porbandar in Gujarat. The dramatic incident was a reminder of the manner Pakistani terrorists sneaked into Mumbai in 2008. The vessel, which had set off from near Karachi on New Year's Eve, turned into a ball of fire and sank after its occupants, believed to be four in number, set fire to it early
Jan 1. Parrikar also lauded the Coast Guard personnel for their effort, saying they did the "right job at the right time". "...It is based on intelligence input and there is no speculative part left to Coast Guard when such issues comes. They reacted immediately, they got air surveillance done on the boat for almost 12 to 14 hours, intercepted it as soon as possible and stopped it after a chase," he said. Parrikar's comments came a day after the BJP slammed the Congress for seeking a probe into the incident and said the opposition party raising questions in the matter showed it had touched a "new low" in politics. Congress spokesperson Randip Singh Surjewala Monday hit back at the BJP. "We request the
spokespersons of BJP to stop making public relation events out of issues of national security. It is our right as the opposition to question the conflicting reports in the media," he said. "Every citizen of this country has the right to question the government, the ruling party cannot brand them as Pakistanis," he said, adding the Congress however commended the "valiant efforts" of the Coast Guard for foiling such an incident. The incident took place amid tensions between India and Pakistan over ceasefire violations along the international border and Line of Control in Kashmir. Pakistan has rejected India's claim about the suspicious vessel and said no boat from Karachi had gone to the open sea.

He's the beast who raped me, shouted Uber rape victim
New Delhi (IANS): The woman who was allegedly raped by Uber taxi driver Shiv Kumar Yadav identified the man at the Tis Hazari court where she had gone to record her statement, and shouted "he is the beast who raped me", Delhi Police said in its chargesheet. Police said in the chargesheet that the woman, after recording her statement before a magistrate, was coming out of the court and saw the accused driver who was being taken by police for his custodial interrogation. "The prosecutrix (woman)...
Shiv Kumar Yadav ko dekhte huye pehchan liya aur shinakht karte hue chillai ki 'yahi woh darinda hai jisne mera rape kiya hai' (the woman identified Shiv Kumar Yadav after spotting him and shouted 'he is the beast who raped me')," the chargesheet said. The incident took place at the Tis Hazari court Dec 8, when the woman went to record her statement before Metropolitan Magistrate Riya Guha in court room No.247, while Yadav was coming out from court room No.264 presided by Metropolitan Magistrate
Ambika Singh, who allowed Delhi Police to quiz the 32-yearold driver for three days. Yadav was arrested Dec 7 and was brought before the court in a muffled face Dec 8. He refused to undergo a test identification parade. When he was coming out of the court room, he removed the muffler, saying he was feeling suffocated. The woman, who was at the same time coming out from another court room, spotted him and identified him. Citing the woman's statement before the magistrate in its
chargesheet, police said the woman said she was raped during recording of her statement under section 164, of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Yadav allegedly raped the woman on the night of Dec 5 when she was heading back home in north Delhi's Inderlok area in the cab he was driving. The woman works for a finance company in Gurgaon. The chargesheet was filed Dec 24 -- 19 days after the rape and the cognizance of the chargesheet was taken by a magistrate court Jan 5.
Police chargesheeted Yadav under sections 376 (rape), 366 (kidnapping or abducting woman with an intent to compel her for marriage), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code. In the over 100-page chargesheet, police cited 44 prosecution witnesses in support of its case. Police also relied on forensic evidence and placed on record the route map of the car in which the offence was committed.

Modi described the attack as "condemnable and despicable". "Our solidarity with the people of France. My thoughts are with families of those who lost their lives," Modi tweeted. The Mumbai Press Club Wednesday said in a statement: "It is a clear attack on the freedom of expression... The Mumbai Press Club stands by the bereaved family members... It is a sad for journalists across the globe.” It said the media practitioners across the world,
whether in conflict zones or otherwise, have been under attack from all quarters. "We have seen what has happened in Iraq last year and in Afghanistan and Pakistan and also other parts of the globe. We in India too are seeing attack on media professionals," the Mumbai Press Club statement added. Terming Wednesday's incident as a bit different as it was "a direct attack on the office of a magazine in which journalists have been killed", it said the manner in which it was executed clearly shows a heinous plan which had been carried out with near precision. It pointed out that when the role of David Coleman

Indian Museum staffer held for Japanese woman’s rape
Kolkata (IANS): A staffer of the Indian Museum here has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 22year-old Japanese woman tourist in November last year, police said Tuesday. Kolkata police arrested five people and busted an interstate racket operating in the
city and in Bihar, who members had allegedly duped and raped the Japanese woman. “Md. Wasim, exhibit cleaner of the Indian Museum, was arrested last midnight in connection with the Japanese woman’s rape,” a police official said Tuesday.
Three people from Kolkata and two from Gaya in Bihar were arrested earlier. The gang operated from Kolkata and used to dupe and sometimes physically abuse Japanese tourists, according to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) P.K. Ghosh.
After duping the Japanese woman of Rs.76,000 for sightseeing at Digha – a seaside resort city in East Midnapore district – the gang subsequently raped her in Fattepur, about 45 km from Bodh Gaya in Bihar. “She was forced on to a bus from Digha to Bodh Gaya
CBI files case against Dera chief over forced castration New Delhi (IANS): The CBI Wednesday registered a case against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in connection with the alleged forced castration of 400 devotees inside his ashram in Sirsa, Haryana. The agency booked the Dera chief on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code, following an order by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. A former Dera follower, Hansraj Chauhan, had filed a petition in the high court in 2012 alleging that he along with around 400 male devotees of the Dera were castrated inside the ashram on the orders of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
Disposing off the petition, the high court had ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the case in December 2014. The court asked the CBI to file the first status report by March 2. Chauhan had demanded a CBI inquiry and compensation for the castration inside the ashram in 2000. Seeking a CBI probe, Chauhan claimed before the high court that the
castration of Dera followers was done by the chief through doctors employed in his hospital. Chauhan said in his petition that he along with other devotees were castrated under false claims that they would be able to realise god through the Dera chief after their castration. Haryana Police handed over the documents related to the incident to the CBI Jan 2. Haryana Police had also provided documents related to seven other devotees of the Dera chief who also claimed to be castrated. The Dera has dismissed the castration allegation. Gurmeet Ram Rahim is also facing trial in connection with cases of murder of a journalist and sexual exploitation of his women disciples.
where two gang members raped her. The gang rape occurred between Nov 23 and 24,” Ghosh said. The Japanese consulate filed a complaint Dec 26 with the city police about the alleged rape, following which police formed a special team of officials from
the detective department, the women’s grievance cell and the bank fraud cell to solve the case. While two of the accused have been charged with rape, three have been booked for cheating, criminal conspiracy and kidnapping among other offences.

Dalit couple lynched in Punjab 'honour killing' Hoshiarpur (Punjab) (IANS): The failure of Punjab Police to provide security to a newlymarried Dalit couple despite directions from the high court led to a gory end for the young couple as they were Sunday lynched allegedly by the girl's relatives. Police officials investigating the case said it was a case of "honour killing". The couple - Sandeep, 24, and Khushboo, 22 - were allegedly attacked by four-five masked men with swords and other sharp-edged weapons at the house of the boy's family in Mugowal village near Mahilpur town in Hoshiarpur district, 125 km from Chandigarh.
The attackers first targeted Khushboo and later lynched Sandeep, his family members told police. While Sandeep died on the spot, Khushboo was taken to a hospital in Mahilpur town where she succumbed to her injuries.
Sandeep's father, Parkash, who tried to save his son, was also brutally attacked. He was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur and his condition is said to be critical. Police have registered a case of murder against the girl's family members following a com-
Over 365,000 people treated for drugs in Punjab Chandigarh (IANS): Over 3.65 lakh (365,000) patients were treated last year or are undergoing treatment at various medical facilities in Punjab for drugs deaddiction, a senior health official said here Sunday. "Field workers mobilized people with substance use disorders to the nearest CHC (community health centres) where they were treated and those requiring admission were admitted," K.K. Talwar, adviser on health and medical education to Punjab government, told the media here. "Till Dec 15, 330,533 patients had been treated at the OPD (out patient department) and 11,656 were treated as indoor patients," Talwar added.
Talwar said that the patients were identified on the basis of a de-addiction camp conducted statewide in June last year. "In an effort to address this serious issue (of drug addiction), the Punjab government had conducted a de-addiction campaign from June 19 to 28, where sensitization, treatment and counselling facilities were provided to substance abusers," Talwar said. With rampant drugs abuse inside jails in Punjab, the state government also set up de-addiction centres inside the prisons last year. The official said deaddiction centres have been set up in each of the eight Model Central Jails at
Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, Faridkot and Ferozepur. "Till now, 22,669 patients have been treated, 461 patients are under detoxification and 718 patients are in rehabilitation wards," Talwar said. In the past two years, 27 Drug De-addiction Centers (DDCs) have been made operational in the state at an expenditure of Rs.38 crore. Seventeen more such centres are being set up in the state at a cost of another Rs.70 crore. The DDCs being set up at Jalandhar, Patiala and Bathinda will have facility of 50 beds each. Amritsar and Faridkot have 50-bedded DDCs already.
plaint filed by the boy's relatives. The couple, who were neighbours, had eloped and got married about three months back against the wishes of the girl's family. Apprehending threat to their lives after their marriage, the couple had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for protection. The high court had directed police to provide them protection. After getting the order from the high court, the couple had approached police in Hoshiarpur district. However, police did not provide them any security and let them go back to their village despite threats
from the girl's side. Following the threats, they left the village and stayed with a friend in Mohali town near Chandigarh. The couple had returned to the village only a few days back. Sandeep's mother Udham Kaur told police that the mask of one assailant, who was later identified as the girl's father Sodhi Ram, came off during the attack. Kaur claimed she recognised him. Hoshiarpur district police chief Rajjit Singh Hundal said the matter was being investigated, and claimed that the couple had refused to take police protection.

Injured Jadeja in, Yuvraj ignored for World Cup squad Mumbai (IANS): Injured allrounder Ravindra Jadeja was included in the 15-member Indian squad for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup starting Feb 14 but star batsman Yuvraj Singh's hopes of getting a late call-up were dashed as the BCCI announced the team for the mega-event here Tuesday. Jadeja is nursing a shoulder injury sustained during training in the early stages of India's ongoing tour of Australia. "The All-India Senior Selection Committee met in Mumbai today (Tuesday) and selected the Indian team for the Tri-series between India, Australia and England to be
played in Australia from the 18th of January," Sanjay Patel, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said. "The Indian team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 to be played in Australia/New Zealand from February 2015 was simultaneously selected." Jadeja picked up the injury while training and wasn't considered for selection for the first two Tests of the ongoing four-match series and returned to India to undergo treatment. Axar Patel was flown in to Australia as a substitute for Jadeja. Patel, the likely candidate
to replace Jadeja in case of his unavailability, was also included in the squad. Jadeja was also named in the ODI squad for the tri-series involving India and England to be played in Australia after the Test series. Recent Test retiree Mahendra Singh Dhoni was named the captain of the side while Virat Kohli was declared his deputy. India are the defending champions having won the trophy under the leadership of Dhoni at home in the 2011 edition of the quadrennial event. But 2011 Cup's man-of-the-tour-
South Africa retain top Test team status
Dubai (IANS): South Africa have retained their ICC top ranking in Tests following their 2-0 series win over the West Indies. The win helped South Africa retain the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test Championship mace and pocket a cash award of $500,000, an ICC statement said Tuesday. "The series win means irrespective of
how both the fourth Test between Australia and India, and the second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, pan out, South Africa cannot be removed from the top Test pedestal at the 1 April annual cut-off date," the ICC release said. The series win ensured South Africa's top position at the 1 April annual cut-off date. South Africa are now on 124 ratings points, and even if Australia win the ongoing Sydney Test against India, they would finish on 119 ratings points, confirming the second position for them and an award of $390,000. A defeat in the Sydney Test would result in Australia losing points but still remaining a place ahead of third-ranked England and fourth-ranked Pakistan, who would collect $280,000 and $170,000, respectively.

nament Yuvraj Singh's outside chance of getting a call-up failed to materialise. He was earlier kept out of the list of 30 probables alongside four other former heavyweights -Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. India play their first match against Pakistan Feb 15. The Indian squad for the World Cup: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virat Kohli (vice-captain), Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Stuart Binny, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja,
Beijing submits bid to host 2022 Winter Olympics Lausanne (Switzerland) (IANS): The Chinese Olympic Committee submitted its bid for Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its headquarters here Tuesday. China's submission came a day before the lapse of the deadline for cities to present their candidature files to the IOC. The committee president Liu Peng handed Beijing's guarantees to the IOC executive director for the Olympic Games Christophe Dubi, reports Xinhua. Beijing will co-host the Games with Zhangjiakou, a Hebei province city nearly 200 kilometers northwest of Beijing, if it wins the 2022 bid. The ice sports of the Games will be staged in Beijing while snow events will be held in Zhangjiakou. The IOC executive board unanimously agreed Oslo, Almaty and Beijing as candidate cities for the Olympic Winter Games 2022 July 7 last year. However, Norway's Oslo withdrew its bid due to lack of domestic supports. The IOC will send its evaluation commission to visit each city between February and March this year. The commission's report, highlighting the risks and opportunities of the candidate cities' projects, will be published prior to the IOC 2022 briefing for its members which will take place in June. The election of the 2022 host city by the IOC will take place in Kuala Lumpur July 31, this year.

It's January, we're all still bloated from Christmas, and year-ender parties and regretting our life choices over the past week. It's time to make our New Year's resolutions. Whether it's eating healthy, going to the gym, quitting smoking or promising yourself that you will take that trip of a lifetime, the first week of the year can be an exciting time fresh with new hope for the future.

All eyes on Japan, China in Asian football Cup Sydney (IANS): A simmering Australian summer will come to the boil this week as an anticipated 800 million fans are due to tune in to AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015, which kicks off here Friday with host Australia taking on minnows Kuwait in Melbourne. With Australia hosting the event for the first time, Asian football fans will enjoy a prime time television schedule bumping the global audience to record dimensions, reports Xinhua. That could play into the hands of Japan, who landed in Sydney well under the radar Saturday to take up position in Cessnock, a sleepy, wine-drenched corner of the Hunter Region of New South Wales, about 50 km outside the port city of Newcastle. The Samurai Blue squad that disassembled
a strong Australian side in November have enjoyed a near perfect build up, sneaking a final fling before its Asian Cup title defence controlling possession in a 2-0 demolition of New Zealand club champions Auckland City in an almost private performance for Javier Aguirre. The former Mexican international nicknamed El Vasco - has been embroiled in a match fixing scandal that has threatened to rubbish both the highly regarded Japanese coach and all of Spanish football. Aguirre's unwanted Christmas present was to wake up among some 40 people named by Spain's anti-corruption prosecutor in a probe into Spanish side Zaragoza's 2-1 win at Levante on the final day of the 2010-11 campaign, which saved it
from relegation and led to allegations that some Levante players were gifted almost one million euros to throw the match. Whether those allegations will impact the Samurai Blue in Australia is doubtful as the fourtime champions - 1992, 2000, 2004, 2011 - have an almost indomitable midfield on display against Auckland led by Yashuhito Endo. Australian fans will be hoping that the firebreathing China Dragons
second in 2004 - will waylay their Japanese arch rivals in the latter stages of a tournament that has all the makings of a classic. Former Australian captain and striker Robbie Slater, in a widely circulated cup preview, described the Chinese side as highly organised and rich with promise. According to Slater, French coach Alain Perrin has an entirely Chinese-based team at his disposal and "they
will be one of the best supported outfits in the tournament". Potentially, China could face the Socceroos in a quarter-final -- and they won the last international between the two countries 4-3 in 2013. Slater singled out Guangzhou Evergrande goal-scorer Gao Lin as China's ace in the hole. "Gao Lin is no stranger to Australian fans because he plays with Asian powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande. The 28-year-old has 18 international goals." Japan will continue their low-key build up with a closed trial match, Monday, against a local Hunter valley team known only as the "Lambton Jaffas", the current reigning Northern NSW National Premier League champions. China, meanwhile completed their Asian
Cup preparations with an ominous 4-1 dissection of Oman. The Dragons will take on three-time winners Saudi Arabia in their Jan 10 opener. AFC general secretary Dato' Alex Soosay said in a statement that the time zone was likely to push the global television audience into unprecedented numbers. "The tournament is being played in a time zone similar to the largest Asian markets of East Asia while the participation of nine West Asian countries gives us confidence of the expected TV audience," he said. Fans throughout Asia, Africa, Brazil, Europe and north America will also enjoy live coverage of the 23-day tournament which climaxes at Sydney's Stadium Australia Jan 31.
HC refuses to interfere in Sarita Devi's ban New Delhi (IANS): The Delhi High Court Monday declined to interfere in the one-year ban imposed on boxer L. Sarita Devi by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and the refusal of Boxing India (BI) to appeal against it. A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw disposed of a plea
observing that no appeal has been filed by BI against AIBA order and the court cannot direct it to file an appeal. "As no appeal against the order passed by AIBA on Dec 17, 2014 has been filed to revoke her (Sarita Devi) suspension, court can not direct the same," said the bench. The court was hearing a plea
seeking direction for BI to appeal against the AIBA decision that banned Sarita Devi for refusing to accept her 2014 Asian Games bronze medal. Sarita, who had refused to accept the medal to protest her controversial semi-final bout loss, has been banned retrospectively from Oct 1, 2014 to Oct 1, 2015 and fined 1,000 Swiss Francs.
The central government had earlier told the court that the ministry had written to AIBA and requested it to take a lenient view considering her humble background and controversy-free image to spare her a career-ending ban. The PIL challenging AIBA's decision to suspend the boxer was filed by senior advocate
Rajiv Dutta who told the court that BI and the government are 'killing a valuable talent by not appealing against the AIBA decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) situated in Lausanne for settling disputes'. He further told the court that the boxer cannot appeal against the decision in her individual capacity.

A.R. Rahman turns 48, musicians pay tribute ON the 48th birthday of Oscarwinning composer A.R. Rahman Tuesday, singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy have hailed the talent of the 'Mozart of Madras', who has given Hindi cinema some lilting melodies and memorable numbers throughout his career. Here's what they have to say of the musician, who won two Oscar awards for his work in international film "Slumdog Millionaire": Lata Mangeshkar: A.R. Rahman is very talented. I've sung very few songs for him. I love "Jiya jale", "Khamoshiyan gun-guna lagi", "O paalan
haare" and "Luka chuppi". Rahman and I came together for the first time for the evergreen "Jiya jale" in Mani Ratnam's "Dil Se..". Then we collaborated for a prayer-song "Ek tu hi bharosa" in "Pukar". It was a very special song. Because I sang it on screen myself. But I must admit "Jiya jale" was a very special song too. It became such a rage. And I'm asked to sing that song at every concert that I go to. I think he was a little intimidated by me when we did "Jiya jale" in Chennai. But he allowed me to do it my own way. And when I started humming an impromptu alaap at
the endA of the tune, he told me to just go on. He recorded that as well. Subsequently I
recorded other songs with Rahman. My duet 'Luka chuppi' with Rahman for "Rang De Basanti" became so popular. It's rare nowadays to get a good song like it. Prasoon Joshi: Artistes and human beings like Rahman are rare. All my work with Rahman is very special to me. Much as I enjoyed writing fun songs like "Masti ki paathshala" and "Masakalli", I cherish exploring the spiritual side of my creativity in the songs "Arziyaan" and "Zariya". May god bless him with some of the happiness that he has given us through his music. Ayushmann Khurrana: A.R.
Rahman is a living legend. He has always been ahead of our times. His melodies have a phenomenal range. They're always filled with surprises. He carries in himself the sure signs of a master composer. My favourite movie soundtracks of A.R. Rahman are "Delhi-6", "Rangeela" and "Rockstar". I wish the most reverred music director of our times a Happy Birthday. Kavita Krishnamurthy: He's a very talented and innovative music director. And a joy to work with. My favourite Rahman song is my own "Tu hi re" in "Bombay".
Javed Akhtar plans 'good 'Khamoshiyan' gets A rating, scripts' in New Year Mahesh Bhatt happy
ACCLAIMED lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar, who along with noted writer Salim Khan penned stories like "Zanjeer", "Sholay" and "Deewar", has said that he is planning to pen down "some good scripts" this year. "I would like to write
some good scripts again, hopefully this year," Javed said here Monday at a book launch. "Besides, there is lot more I want to do...more poetry, more lyrics, better poetry, better lyrics, better scripts...there is so much to do," he added. Javed's last screenplay writer was for son Farhan Akhtar's 2006 directorial "Don: The Chase Begins Again". It was a remake of 1978 film "Don", the screenplay of which was written by the indomitable Salim-Javed duo. The 69-year-old, who clocked 50 years in Hindi
cinema last year, feels there is much to achieve and feels "50 years don't mean that I have achieved everything". "There is so much to do in life," he said. Further, he lauded the kind of work today's filmmakers are doing. "When I see the work of other people (filmmakers, writers) and how wonderfully they are doing...for example 'PK'...the kind of scripts they are writing, I get very impressed and inspired," the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee said. SUPERNATURAL erotica 'Khamoshiyan' has been given an 'A' certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and Mahesh Bhatt, the film’s producer, is pleased. The movie, which has abundant steamy and bold scenes, has been produced by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt under their Vishesh Films banner. Lauding the decision, Mahesh said in a statement: "The censor board has come of age. We welcome this decision. ‘Khamoshiyan’ is an erotic supernatural film and we did not want to tame the product at all. "That would not be fair to audiences. It is a bold, adult film and we are very happy with the certification." Starring Gurmeet Choudhary, Sapna Pabbi and Ali Fazal, the movie will release Jan 30. (IANS)

Terrorist Jagtar Tara to be extradited from Thailand A Bangkok court Tuesday ordered Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist Jagtar Singh Tara, also known as Gurmeet Singh, to be extradited from Thailand to India, according to information received by the Punjab Police, reports IANS. Tara is one of the terrorists convicted in the assassination of then-Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. Beant Singh was killed in a bomb blast at the secretariat complex in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995. The blast claimed the lives of 17 others. Dilawar Singh Jaisinghvala of
Khalistan Liberation Force acted as the suicide bomber. IANS said Tara could be handed over to Indian authorities within a month for extradition. Tara was arrested by Thailand Police near the beach resort town of Pattiyya Monday following a tip off from the Punjab Police. He had shaved off his beard and cut his hair and had been living illegally in Thailand for over four months. Three BKI terrorists - Tara, Jagtar Singh Hawara, Paramjit Singh Bhaura - and
their accomplice Devi Singh, a murder convict housed in the same prison barrack, had made a sensational escape by digging a 104-foot-long tunnel in the highsecurity Burail jail in Chandigarh in 2004. Hawara and Bhaura were re-arrested by security agencies later but Tara remained elusive. News agencies reported that Thai National police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thawornsiri said Gurmeet Singh entered Thailand in October and was arrested in the eastern province of Chon
Buri on Monday. Punjab police had received a tip last June that he was living in Thailand on a Pakistani passport as Gurmeet Singh. A police team went to Thailand in September but Gurmeet Singh remained elusive. Thai officers also arrested Pakistani national Ali Alat, the owner of the house where Gurmeet Singh was found. Alat said that he was not aware about Singh's criminal background.
Drugs blame on Punjab a 'big conspiracy', says Badal Attari (Punjab) (IANS): Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Monday said a "big conspiracy" was being hatched against the state and Punjabis by labelling them as addicted to
drugs. Addressing the first of three protest rallies against drugs at Attari, just two km from the India-Pakistan international border checkpost, he said the propagan-
da on labelling Punjab as an addicted state was hatched by the Congress. "There is a big conspiracy that I see in all this," Badal, who is also the Shiromani Akali Dal president, told thousands who

had gathered for the rally here, 30 km from Amritsar. "The Congress is behind this whole propaganda. The Punjab government is determined to fight against the menace of drugs and also against the malicious propaganda," he said. "Rahul Gandhi was the first one to make the drugs allegation against Punjabis. The Congress leadership is responsible for labelling Punjab as a state addicted to drugs," Badal said. He said the highest seizures of drugs and the maximum arrests of those in the drugs trade were made during the tenure of the present Punjab government. "Instead of thanking us for our campaign against drugs, we are being blamed," Badal said. He appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seal the entire border with Pakistan with the use of technology as the United States had done with the border with Mexico. "This protest is not against the BSF (Border Security Force) or any other agency. We are fighting against the drugs coming from Afghanistan-Pakistan and from other states. We will continue our fight against drugs," Badal said. He added that drugs were transiting from Punjab and that the state was not a consumer. "Drugs are transiting from Punjab, and are not consumed here. Heroin and other (expensive) drugs are not consumed in Punjab but in Goa and other places. Rave parties in Mumbai, Goa, Pune and Gurgaon take place openly," Badal said. "But no arrests are made. We are catching those running the drugs rackets and we only are being blamed for the drugs mess," Badal said. He pointed out that other states were encouraging cultivation and production of drugs. "These states earn crores of rupees from drugs cultivation. This is being done openly in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and other states, but no action is taken," Badal said. "We cannot have two laws in the country where some states encourage drugs production and Punjab is blamed. The Centre must do something about it," Badal said. He said Punjab Police have made arrests of those in the drugs trade in the state and several other states. The Akali Dal is organising similar dharnas along the India-Pakistan international border in Ferozepur and Fazilka districts.

Bird flu scare shuts down Chandigarh's tourist attraction Chandigarh (IANS): Over the past fortnight, the thousands who used to throng the pretty Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh's famous tourist attraction, particularly over the weekends, are missing. This Sunday was no different. The boats, which were a major attraction, are stationary. Also missing are the nearly 200-odd ducks and geese. Except for some crows and other birds, there is hardly any life in or around the lake and its well-maintained causeway which was also the meeting point for hundreds of morning and evening walkers and fitness enthusiasts. The scare of bird flu, which hit this important landmark in midDecember, has taken a toll. The scare started after nearly 30 geese and ducks died mysteriously in the first half of December. Of the samples sent for examination, one tested positive for H5N1 virus or avian flu (also called bird flu). The geese and ducks were culled by the authorities after the bird flu scare. Entry to the entire lake complex, which is
spread along three kilometres, has been banned by the district authorities since Dec 19. No visitors, tourists or morning/evening walkers are allowed anywhere near the complex. Barricades have been put up by the Chandigarh Police at least 200 metres away from the complex. "No one is allowed into the complex except for those on duty (like police and wildlife officials) and some journalists. The ban could continue for the next few days," a Chandigarh policewoman at one of the barricades told IANS. Health and wildlife officials in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana have been regularly monitoring people living close to the lake complex for any symptoms of bird flu. White boric powder has been sprinkled in the whole complex, including the roads, parking and the walking area. "We came to see the lake as we had heard a lot about its beauty. But we are disappointed we cannot see it," Dhiraj Ahuja, who came to Chandigarh from Jaipur, told IANS. The commercial com-
plex at the lake, which has some eateries and shops, is said to be losing over Rs.2 lakh in business daily for the past nearly three weeks. The mini amusement park for children too wears a deserted look. The lake sports complex, which has a club house, sporting facilities and water sports and is a popular destination for weddings and other functions, too is bereft of any activity. The morning and evening walkers are particularly upset. "I have been walking over 11 km at the lake for the past 30 years daily. After entry to the area was banned, I have been going for walks to other parks and roads but the charm of the lake is not there. I am missing the lake," lawyer Sunil Parti told IANS. Authorities in Chandigarh banned entry to the lake complex fearing the water too could be contaminated. But samples of the water and the birds sent to various labs recently have tested negative. It may take a few days more for the city's pride to get back to business.
BSF recovers heroin worth Rs.250 million in Punjab Chandigarh (IANS): Border Security Force (BSF) troopers Saturday recovered five kg of heroin, estimated to be worth Rs.250 million in the international market, along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab. A BSF spokesman said the seizure was made in the Border out Post (BoP) Rattoke in Ferozepur sector, about 300 km from
here. The spokesman said the heroin was worth Rs.250 million in the international market. He said BSF troopers noticed some movement in the area of the international border late Friday night. The smugglers were challenged but they opened fire on the BSF troopers. The fire was
returned but the smugglers escaped, taking advantage of dense fog and darkness. The recovery of the drugs was made Saturday. The BSF had seized over 361 kg of heroin last year in the Punjab sector. This was the highest ever seizure in the sector.
Jagmeet Brar leaves Congress, may join BJP Chandigarh (IANS): Senior Congress leader from Punjab Jagmeet Singh Brar Monday resigned from the party. He is likely to join the BJP. Brar, a former Congress MP from Punjab, was with the party for nearly 35 years. "I have resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party. I will decide the future course of action soon," Brar told the media here. There is strong speculation that he is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata
Party. The BJP, which has had an alliance government in Punjab with the Shiromani Akali Dal since 2007, has been looking for leaders with good political base in the Malwa belt. The Akali Dal enjoys considerable influence in this belt. A former Congress Working Committee member, Brar was suspended from the Congress in August 2014 following his outburst against the Congress
leadership after the party's debacle in the Lok Sabha polls. He had then said that the Congress leaders should go on a sabbatical. Birender Singh, another Congress leader and a former CWC member but from Haryana, was also suspended from the Congress along with Brar. Birender Singh then joined the BJP and is now a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government. The BJP got him elected to the Rajya Sabha from Haryana.

Pakistan’s National Assembly and Senate pass anti-terror laws Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain Wednesday signed a new bill into law after both houses of parliament unanimously approved tough anti-terror measures, including establishment of military-led special courts for trying terrorism-related cases. Both houses of parliament Tuesday unanimously approved tough anti-terror measures, including establishment of military-led special courts for the hearing of terrorism-related cases. The National Assembly and the Senate also approved an amendment in the Army Act to empower the military courts to try accused in terrorism cases, Xinhua reported. Under the amendment, anyone who belongs to any terrorist group or organisation and uses the name of religion or a sect and wages war against Pakistan will be tried under this act. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif thanked the lawmakers for their support and told the Senate that the law was needed to "com-
pletely root out terrorism from the country." Members of Islamic parties Jamiat ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Jamaat-e-Islami did not take part in the voting. The main opposition Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf also abstained from the voting as the party has boycotted the parliament as part of its anti-government protest. A total of 247 in the 342-member National Assembly, or lower house of the parliament, voted in favour of the amendment and none present in the house opposed. The house rejected amendments proposed by Jamaat-e-Islami in the legislation that sought removal of the word "religion and sect" from the draft. The votes in both houses were more than the two-third majority required for an amendment in the Constitution. In the 104-member Senate, a total of 78 present in the house voted in favour of the legislation, according to the Senate chairman. No one opposed the legislation; however, the six JUIF senators abstained.
The provisions of the two bills shall remain in force for a period of two years from the date of their commencement. The government opted for the constitutional amendments after the Taliban massacred over 140 students and teachers in a brutal attack on an armyrun school in Peshawar city Dec 16. The military courts will put on trial members of "any terrorists groups or organisations using the name of religion or sect and (which) raises arms or wages war against Pakistan or attacks armed forces of Pakistan and law enforcement agencies, or attacks any civilian or military organization in Pakistan", Xinhua reported. The new laws say those will also face military trial who kidnap any person for ransom, store or carry explosives, firearms, instruments, articles, suicide jackets or vehicles designed to be used for terrorist acts. A person who receives or provides funding from any foreign or local sources for such illegal activities and acts or does any
act to over-awe the state or any section of the public or sect or a religious minority or to create terror or insecurity in Pakistan will be punished under this act, according to the draft. The bills provide that any person who is alleged to have abetted, added or conspired in the commotion of any offence falling under this law, shall be tried under this act. No person accused of any offence shall be prosecuted without the prior sanction of the federal government, the bills say. Any political party registered under the law of the country will not come under the new law. The federal government shall have the power to transfer any proceedings in respect of any person who is accused any of these offences, the law says. The bill says that the extraordinary situation and circumstances demands special measures for speedy trial of certain offences related to terrorism, waging war, or insurrection against Pakistan and prevention of acts threatening the society of Pakistan by any terrorist
group using the name of religion, or a sect and members of such armed groups, wings and militias. The law says Pakistan faces grave and unprecedented threats to its integrity because of armed and insurgent groups who are using the name of religion or sect by groups of foreign or local funded elements including warriors using the name of religion or a sect. Those who will be captured in combat with armed forces and other law enforcement agencies will be tried in the special courts. According to Geo News report, the 21st amendment to the constitution and amendment to the Pakistan Army Act 1952 were tabled by Law Minister Pervaiz Rashid. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the military courts would only deal with those who want to play the game of bloodshed and fire in the country. He said steps were being taken to implement the National Action Plan on counter-terrorism.
Pakistan rejects India's claims on 'terror boat' Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Tuesday dismissed as "baseless and preposterous" Indian assertions linking Pakistan to the boat which exploded in the Arabian Sea in the early hours of Jan 1. The Pakistani foreign ministry in a statement rejected a
series of charges in the wake of escalating tension along the border, reports Xinhua. "The baseless and preposterous Indian allegations regarding the so called 'terror boat' from Pakistan are also in the same vein," a foreign ministry statement said. "On the other
hand, the people of Pakistan see the escalation of tension by India on the Line of Control and Working (international) Boundary, through continuous unprovoked firing and targeting of civilians, as an attempt to distract our armed forces from its valiant mission against all
terrorists," it said. Pakistan also rejected as "equally baseless and malicious" the Indian foreign ministry spokesperson's allegations regarding the "citings" of Punjabi/Urdu-speaking terrorist elements in Afghanistan. "India is reminded to refrain
from attempts to create misunderstanding between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the two brotherly nations bound by common destiny, shared culture, history and religion," the statement said and described these efforts as violation of all international norms.

Cucumbers are a highly alkalinizing and hydrating food that are rich in nutrients such as vitamins A, C, K, magnesium, silicon, and potassium. Cucumbers are also packed with antioxidants and enzymes such as
erepsin which helps to digest proteins and destroy parasites and tapeworms. The high chlorophyll and lignan content in the cucumber skin makes it a great anticancer food and can be particularly helpful in
Indo-Canadian Voice World | Saturday, Jan 10, 2015 reducing the risk of estrogen related cancers such as breast, uterus, prostate, and ovarian cancer. The high fiber content of cucumbers makes it an excellent remedy for constipation by adding bulk and hydration directly to the colon. Cucumbers are also one of the best natural diuretics around, aiding in the excretion of wastes through the kidneys and helping to dissolve uric acid accumulations such as kidney and bladder stones. They have wonderful anti-inflammatory benefits which can significantly benefit autoim-
mune and neurological disorders. It can also help to diminish swelling and puffiness underneath the eyes when applied externally. Cucumbers also benefit teeth and gums as the fiber and nutrients help to massage the gums
and remove bad bacteria from the teeth. Their high silica content promotes strong and healthy hair and nails which has earned them the reputation for centuries as being a “beautifying food. Fresh cucum-
ber juice has the ability to cleanse and detox the entire body as well as help to alleviate digestive problems such as gastritis, acidity, heartburn, indigestion, and ulcers. It is also an ideal way to properly hydrate the body since it is contains beneficial electrolytes that have the ability to bring nutrients and hydration deep into the cells and tissues making it far more effective than water alone. Fresh cucumber juice is also an excellent remedy for bringing down a fever in children and the convalescent.
Cocoa-rich diets could improve memory
London, Jan 7 (IANS) Diets rich in cocoa flavanols - bioactives found naturally in cocoa can help arrest age-related memory decline in healthy adults, a study shows. "The results of this study are encouraging - they support the idea that diet, and specifically a diet rich in cocoa flavanols, can play an important role in maintaining cognitive health as we age," said lead author Giovambattista Desideri from the University of L'Aquila in Italy. The study involved men and women aged 61-85 years. They were assigned to one of three flavanol groups, consuming a drink containing either high (993 mg), interme-
diate (520 mg) or low (48 mg) amounts of cocoa flavanols every day for eight weeks. Among those individuals who regularly consumed either the high- or intermediate-flavanol drinks, there were significant improvements in overall cognitive function after eight weeks. As cognitive function was normal for this aged population, the study showed that even cognitively healthy individuals can quickly benefit from the regular inclusion of cocoa flavanols in their diets. The researchers earlier found cognitive and cardiometabolic benefits of habitual cocoa flavanol consumption in older adults who had been
diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The new research trial was carried out with a special cocoa flavanol test product, designed to deliver a standardised amount of flavanols within a nutritionally suitable drink. This test product is currently not commercially available. Flavanol content of commercially available chocolate is variable and, given its macronutrient profile, it is not recommended as a health food. The study was published in the journal AJCN - The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The work helps to ensure Ford vehicles meet or exceed industry safety standards in the global markets in which they are sold. “Today’s vehicles come in a greater variety of body styles, and have more technology and driver-assist features – and many countries have unique regulations,” said Steve Kenner, global director, Ford automotive safety office. “We are able to manage this workload efficiently thanks to our significant investment in technology and the hard work of our teams.”

All-new 2015 Chrysler 200S AWD: A new era in the mid-size sedan market
By Autoreviewman
Sleek, handsome and with understated European looks, the 2015 Chrysler 200 is a midsize sedan to get very excited about. And it not just about the exterior. The cabin and engineering under the skin are also state of the art and then some. For example: there is a segment first nine-speed automatic transmission, Alfa Romeo-based chassis, two world-class engines, an innovative all-wheel-drive system, available sport mode and paddle shifters plus stellar fuel economy at an estimated 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres. The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 debuts the new “face of Chrysler.” Although the profile is lean and rangy like a European thoroughbred, the 200 features typical Chrysler flair with an updated Chrysler
“wing” badge on the front fascia plus a signature full length; “race track” LED tail lamp set up. Meanwhile the cabin is updated with higher quality materials and exemplary attention to fit, finish and detail. Plastic are well-crafted, pleasing to the eye and, soft to the touch, whilst ergonomics are also vastly improved. Buyers of the new Chrysler 200 will appreciate the host of high tech features from the large comprehensive and easy to use touch screen to the innovative rotary e-shift dial that replaces the traditional console shifter. This new design allows easy shifting and also yields space for more functional and usable storage in the centre console. Our tester was the 200S
AWD (All-Wheel Drive.) with a segment-first standard ninespeed automatic transmission and the excellent the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine with a best-in-class 295 horsepower. Options on our $31,394 tester included a duel pane sunroof, comfort groups, Uconnect entertainment system with GPS, Touchscreen display, Blind spot and cross detection safety system and Hyper black alloy wheel package for a final tally of $38,790 including taxes and destination charge. The AWD features a segment-first fully disconnecting rear axle that improves fuel economy by operating in frontwheel-drive when all-wheeldrive is not needed. The all-
wheel-drive system features a one-speed power transfer unit (PTU) and uniquely disconnects and reconnects the rear axle – automatically and seamlessly – as needed and at any speed. The disconnecting rear axle disconnects at both the PTU and rear drive module, which improves fuel economy by reducing power usage when all-wheel drive is not needed. This state of the art all-wheel-drive system includes a “sport” driving mode. High spirits will be had for all fortunate to see Unbroken this holiday season . Worth a trip to local Cineplex Odeon Theatres this Universal Studios drama is based on a true event. Fascinating on all levels you will take lots away from this tale of adversity and triumph. Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie (The
Somewhat of an outsider a young C.J. Valleroy breathes life as the troubled kid whose bullying would play a big part in his future. Even the most unlikely people can have hidden talents and as a boy this lad showed promise as a runner. Egged on by his brother Pete Louis became the sensation of the town before emerging as a champion. Wanting to serve his country in it's time of need an older Louis showed equal promise as a gunner on a plane. Warmth and steely determination rise to the surface with Jack O'Connell needing
every inch of strength (and then some) to overcome (1) being left at sea for dead for over 44 days and (2) having to endure unbelievable hardship and humiliation as a prisoner of war. Harsh conditions abound for the captives at the Japanese prisoner of war camp. Led by the brutal Mutsushiro Watanabe (as Miyavi) actor Takamasa Ishira should go down in the hall of fame - really hall of shame for his dogged determination, to break (i.e. beat) Louis down. Based on the novel by acclaimed Seabiscuit writer
Laura Hillebrand and adapted to the screen by no less than Joel and Ethan Coen Unbroken is a first class look at a true hero whose roots show the man's mettle to withstand unbelievable harsh conditions and brutality. An excellent atmosphere of the war torn era with exciting airborne footage and
great characters coalesce to make Unbroken unforgettable can't believe your eyes entertainment that's as emotional, uplifting and rewarding as it gets. Forget about the gossip levelled Ms. Jolie's way by jealous Hollywood insiders. This lady can do it all and Unbroken further proves it.

Changeling) has come a long way since her Lara Tomb days. Despite being the victim of North Korean hackers in the now infamous blackmailing hacker scandal of recent days Ms. Jolie continues to show her skill as a master storyteller by turning her creative lens back to the days of World War 2. Shot stateside Unbroken traces the tortured path of an immigrant Italian family to the United States. Children can be curious and problematic but as a young boy Louis Zamperini really puts his new arrival family through the paces.
