New Delhi (IANS): Celebrated former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, who parted ways with AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal around two years ago, Thursday joined the BJP, saying Delhi needs a stable and honest government. At an event attended by Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, she also lavished praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "inspirational leadership". Bedi, India's first woman police officer, and Kejriwal were partners in social activist Anna H a z a r e' s a n t i - c o r r u p t i o n campaign which shook India in 2011, eventually leading to the birth of the Aam Aadmi Party. Bedi and Kejriwal later fell out. Even as Kejriwal took a more and more stridently anti-Congress, anti-BJP line, Bedi began to bat for the BJP and Prime Minister Modi. Addressing the media after joining the party formally by dialling a toll-free number, started for the party's mass membership drive, the 65-yearold Bedi expressed her gratitude for Modi. "I'm grateful to the prime minister. I am here because of his (Modi) inspirational leadership," she said, speaking in Hindi and in

a style that indicated she was set to spearhead the BJP's battle in the capital. She credited the prime minister for pushing her to embrace political work from just being a social activist. "If people like me have changed, I think crores would have changed. A new faith has taken place after May (2014)... I have been inspired. "I devoted myself to the country since 1970 when I began teaching and joined the Indian Police Service in 1972. I have 40 years of administrative experience. That's what I will give to Delhi. "Delhi needs a strong, clearheaded, stable, experienced government."

A former tennis player whose innings in Delhi Police is still widely remembered, Bedi said no evil would be tolerated in the city. She insisted that she knew how to get work done. "I'm in a mission mode." Bedi took voluntary retirement in 2007 - 13 years after she won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for government work when a junior officer was made the Delhi Police chief bypassing her. She promised to make New Delhi - a teeming city of over 17 million - the No.1 capital in the world. "It's a dream and we will realise it together. "I'm so happy the BJP has given me an opportunity to give to Delhi whatever I have." Shah and Jaitley said Bedi's entry was bound to strength the BJP, which in December 2013 failed to get a majority in the 70member assembly because of the AAP's stunning debut performance when it took 28 seats. Shah said Bedi would very much contest the Feb 7 election but said the chief ministerial candidate would be decided only after the results become known. "She will certainly contest the election. Who will be the chief minister will be decided by the parliamentary board," he said.

Indian-American Kamala Harris to run for US senate Washington (IANS): Califor nia's IndianAmerican Attorney General Kamala Harris, a "good friend" of President Barack Obama, has thrown her hat into the ring for the 2016 race to replace fellow Democrat veteran Barbara Boxer in the US Senate. "I will be a fighter for the next generation on the critical issues facing our country," pledged Oakland, California-born Harris, 50, the state's first IndianAmerican and first African American top law officer announcing her run on her website Tuesday. "I will be a fighter for middle class families who are feeling the pinch of stagnant wages and diminishing opportunity," added the daughter of an Indian mother and Jamaican-American father. "I will be a fighter for our children who deserve a world-class education, and for students burdened by predatory lenders and skyrocketing tuition. And I will fight relentlessly to protect our coast, our immigrant communities and our seniors," Harris said. Harrison's mother Dr Shyamala Gopalan is a breast cancer specialist who emigrated from Chennai in the 1960s while her father Donald Harris is an economics professor at Stanford University. Hours after Harris announced her run, billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer said he would decide soon whether to take on the follow Democrat in the November 2016 election. Steyer and Harris would be among the most formidable contenders for Boxer's seat, along with former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who has said he is "seriously considering" a run, according to CNN.

Not mandatory to appoint Leader of Opposition: Centre New Delhi (IANS): The Delhi High Court was Wednesday informed by the central government that the position of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha was not a mandatory constitutional position and no party has the requisite 55 seats to stake claim. A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw was informed that appointment of

Leader of Opposition was not mandatory and the appointment only started from the fourth Lok Sabha. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sanjay Jain, appearing for the central government, told the court that in the past there was no Leader of Opposition seven times. The view that the speaker was under obligation to recognise the

Leader of Opposition was a complete myth, he said. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by advocate Imran Ali, who sought direction to the speaker to appoint Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The plea also sought quashing of a statement of the first speaker of the Lok Sabha, who had ruled that a party needs 10 percent members to

be the main opposition party. The Congress is the second largest party in the current Lok Sabha with 44 seats. However, it does not have the requisite 10 percent (55 seats) to stake claim. During the hearing, the petitioner argued that the Central Vigilance Commission Act, Right to Information Act, Lokpal Act and the Human Rights Act required the pres-

ence of Leader of Opposition to complete certain functions. The ASG, however, argued that giving recognition to any person as Leader of Opposition was under complete discretion of the speaker and the court cannot pass direction to the speaker. The bench, after hearing the arguments, reserved its judgment.

Sonia calls Modi regime dictatorial, Congress discusses way ahead New Delhi (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday accused the Narendra Modi government of being "dictatorial", "anti-farmer" and "anti-poor" as the party deliberated on its strategy for electoral revival and organisational revamp at a meeting of its working committee. In her address to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, the party's highest decisdion-making body, Gandhi attacked Modi's silence on "provocative statements and speeches" by some of his ministers and party leaders, saying it was an extension of the party's "strategy of polarization" seen in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha election as well as the recent assembly polls. She also criticized the government for destroying the Land Acquisition Act. "The Land Acquisition Act came into effect after wide-ranging talks and consultations but this government has effectively destroyed this landmark legislation and brought back the law passed by the British in 1894 through the back door," she said. Suggesting a nationwide campaign be launched to create awareness about the "dictatorial tendencies of the government", Gandhi expressed concern over the government's "anti-farmer and antipoor policies". "While the prime minster makes much of lowering inflation, he doesn't mention how he has lowered the income of farmers. His government has increased the MSP (minimum support price) to select crops only by 3 percent. The MSP of certain crops such as cotton has now gone below cultivation price causing several farmers to commit suicide," she said. A day after the Delhi polls were announced for feb 7, the party chief entrusted general secretary Ajay Maken to lead the campaign in the national capital for the party which is intent on improving its performance. Against the backdrop of reverses in the assembly polls over the past six months following its debacle in the Lok Sabah election last year, Gandhi expressed hope for new beginning for the party in 2015. As a plan to revitalize the eroding party's support base across the country, she projected the expansion of party workers base as the key. "We will use our ongoing membership enrollment programme to launch a mass contact mission, which has to be unprecedented in scale and scope," she said. Underscoring the importance of empowering grassroots workers, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, also present at the meeting, laid a special emphasis on consulting their sentiments before any organizational plan was hammered out. Sonia Gandhi also criticized the Modi government for taking the ordinance route and bypassing parliament on all crucial matters, saying "the country's democratic institutions are being undermined". "The BJP-led government has already promulgated 10 ordinances in its sevenmonth tenure, that signaled the government's pernicious notion that ordi-

nances were akin to good governance." The ordinance on coal mines, she said, "has surreptitiously undone the spirit of nationalization of coal mines that had crucial safeguards". She also denounced the Modi government for diluting welfare policies such as the rural job scheme, the Food Security Act, Forest Rights Act and self help groups institutions. With target on resurrection of party's electoral fortunes, the Congress president called

upon the party workers to bring about changes in the structural and leadership of the party. "The way forward should be that we go back to the people. All of us from AICC down to the block level, need to renew ties and connections with the people everywhere," she said while urging the CWC members to brainstorm and "propose ways and means to reach out to the masses and make this (Modi) government answerable and accountable".

Earlier, party leader Ambika Soni said after the four-hour-long meeting that discussion on Rahul Gandhi's prospective elevation to the party's presidency was not on the agenda. "Rahul Gandhi is our vice president and he is playing a very prominent role. He is also guiding from upfront on many organisational matters. But today (Tuesday), we spoke on the agenda connected with organisational matters only," she said.

Strong UN-Indian partneship good for world: Ban Ki-moon New Delhi (IANS): United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Monday said India was among the biggest contributors to the UN peacekeeping missions and as such its partnership was important to the world body. "India is an important country for the UN. It is one of the biggest contributors to the UN peacekeeping mission and democracy fund," Ban Ki-moon said in his address to a gathering at Young @70, to mark the 70th anniversary of the UN founded in October 1945. On the occasion, also attended by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar along with Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarathi and Bollywood actors Sharmila Tagore and Nandita Das, Ban Ki-moon said adults must com-

mit themselves to make a better world for younger generation. Setting empowerment of women and children as one of his goals, he said investing in them was the most powerful way to obtain global progress. "I prioritize welfare of women and children. The goal is to empower them to contribute to our common future.... (The UN is) striving to provide women and girl with proper health services, sexual and reproductive health... (We) are pushing for equality in education," he said. He applauded the Narendra Modi government for addressing the issue of high child mortality in the country and for expanding vaccine coverage for children.

"I also welcome his (Modi) initiative to put toilets in every household and school by 2019. It's a matter of health and safety for women and girls," he said. Ban also "staunchly opposed" the criminalisation of homosexuality and the resultant discrimination, saying human rights were equal to all regardless of their sexual orientation. "We are different from one another but have same human rights. I believe in equality of all people, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. "I speak out because laws of criminalizing consensual same sex relations violate basic right for privacy and their freedom from discrimination. These laws create intolerance," the

secretary-general said. UN advocate Nandita Das urged the secretary general to pressure the Indian government to remove this "archaic law", referring to Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, criminalising "unnatural sex". Satyarthi, invoking the importance of a future free of child labour and slavery that still victimizes about 5.5 million children in the world, said: "There must not be any excuse for not ending slavery. We have to get rid of it." It was a message that also resonated with Tendulkar - the UNICEF ambassador for handwash and sanitation - who batted for a future where hygiene and health was ensured for all children. Tagore, a national goodwill

ambassador for UNICEF, desired a future that "would value our mothersa ensure that who give birth and nurture are also able to survive". Ban also said he was in India to "strengthen" UN-India partnership "because India's collaboration with the UN is good for this country and for our world". Visibly hesitant to display his linguistic skills in Hindi, Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, however went on to speak in it. "Mera is desh se ek gehra samabandh hai. Main Bharat wapas aake bohot khush hua (I have a deep connection with this country. I am happy to return to India)," and adding he was returning after 43 years to India, with which he had a special connection with because his son was born here.

Army men assault Maharashtra policemen

Nashik (Maharashtra)/New Delhi (IANS): Army men Wednesday assaulted on-duty police personnel, injuring at least three, and vandalised the Upanagar police station here in two separate incidents on the eve of Army Day, a top police official said. The army has ordered a court of inquiry into the incident. In the first incident, an army lieutenant on two-day casual leave, came to the police station along with a relative to complain about some family dispute, Nashik Deputy Commissioner of Police

NEW

Hemrajsingh Rajput told IANS. Apparently irked over some delay in filing the complaint, he and the relative assaulted the on-duty police officer and at least two other policemen. Top police officials reached the police station and finally arrested the army officer whose identity was not disclosed - and his relative for assaulting the policemen. While the army officer was handed over to the Indian Army authorities Wednesday morning with written police instructions to take necessary action against him, the relative was produced

before a court, Rajput said. The second incident took place Wednesday afternoon when a large group of army men from the Deolali Camp nearby reached the Upanagar police station. "In an apparently retaliatory move, more than 100 jawans from the Deolali army camp wearing track suits and helmets trooped on the Upanagar police station this afternoon (Wednesday) and assaulted several of our on-duty police personnel, besides damaging government property," Rajput told IANS.

Supreme Court sets aside stay on Salman Khan's conviction

IN a setback to filmstar Salman Khan, the Supreme Court Wednesday set aside the Rajasthan High Court order putting on hold his conviction in the blackbuck hunting case, and asked the high court to consider the matter afresh. The high court Nov 12, 2013 had suspended the conviction of Salman Khan in the blackbuck hunting case on the filmstar's plea that it was coming in the way of the UK Border Agency issuing him visa to travel to Britain for a film shoot. Salman Khan was convicted in the blackbuck hunting case April 10, 2006. Britain's immigration rules say "entry clearance to the UK is to be refused if an applicant has been convicted of an offence for which he has been sentenced to a period of imprisonment of at least 4 years". The apex court bench of Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel sent the matter back to the high court for fresh consideration. "It would be open to the respondent (Salman Khan) to show that if the order of con-

viction is not stayed it will cause irreversible consequences/injustice to him which cannot be undone if he ultimately succeeds," the apex court said. "It would be open to the state (of Rajasthan) to oppose such prayer on the ground that non-suspension of conviction will not cause any irreversible consequences or injustice to the respondent and the same can be undone if he (Salman Khan) ultimately succeeds." The apex court verdict came on a plea by the Rajasthan government challenging the high court order. Pronouncing the verdict, Justice Mukhopadhaya said: "If some foreign country is not granting permission to visit the said country on the ground that the respondent (Salman Khan) has been convicted of an offence and has been sentenced for five years of imprisonment under the Indian law, the said order cannot be a ground to stay the order of conviction." "If an order of conviction in any manner is causing irreversible consequences or injustice to the respondent (Salman Khan), it was open

to the court to consider the same. "If the court comes to a definite conclusion that the irreversible consequences/injustice would cause to the accused which could not be restored, it was well within the domain of the court to stay the conviction." The apex court also noted that the high court while passing its order did not give any finding that "if the conviction is not stayed, irreparable harm/irreversible consequences or injustice would be caused to the respondent (Salman Khan)". The high court stayed the order of conviction "mainly on the ground that the conviction is coming in respondent's way to travel abroad which has resulted in negating the order granting him permission to go abroad". The high court Feb 21, 2011 modified its Aug 31, 2007 order and allowed Salman Khan to travel abroad without its prior permission. While granting him bail, the high court in August 2007 had said Salman Khan shall not leave the country without the court's prior permission. Noting that more than a year has passed since the high court passed the order putting on hold the conviction, the apex court said: "There is nothing on record to suggest that the respondent (Salman Khan) has again to visit UK for further shooting of any film/movie." Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu, Neelam and others were accused of hunting the protected blackbuck in Rajasthan during the shoot-

ing of "Hum Saath Saath Hain". He was convicted by a trial court April 10, 2006, under the Wild Life (Protection) Act and was awarded five years' jail and a fine of Rs.25,000. A sessions judge Aug 24, 2007, upheld the conviction and sentence as it dismissed

his appeal against the trial court order. The Rajasthan High Court by its order of Aug 31, 2007, suspended his sentence, and Nov 12, 2013, suspended the order of conviction as it came in the way of Salman Khan's travel to Britain. A police complaint was

lodged Oct 2, 1998 against Salman Khan and the others for hunting the Krishnamriga (blackbuck) deer on the midnight of Sep 28, 1998, within the limits of Mathania village. Salman Khan was arrested Oct 12, 1998, got bail Oct 15 and was released Oct 17

Kerry skipped Paris march for 'important work' in India

Washington (IANS): In damage control mode, US admitted that it should have sent a higher profile official to the Paris unity march, but said President Barack Obama could not go because of security considerations. Secretary of State John Kerry too could not make it to the anti-terrorism rally attended by over 40 world leaders as he was on a pre-planned trip to India "doing some important work representing US interests there" the White House said Monday. "I think it's fair to say that we should have sent someone with a higher profile to be there," spokesman Josh Earnest said responding to criticism over the absence of Obama, vice president Joe Biden or a high tank-

ing US official from the rally. Earnest said the rally was conceived on Friday evening and did not allow enough time to pull off the security feat required for Obama to march amid the public, which attracted more than three-and-a-half million people. Earnest said it posed "significant security challenges." Asked why was it not possible for Kerry to make the trip instead, the spokesperson said: "What I can tell you is that certainly the Secretary of State is somebody who has very important responsibilities himself." "He was in India this past weekend doing some important work representing US interests there," Earnest said referring to his attendance at the

Vibrant Gujarat summit in Ahmedabad and his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kerry, he noted, would be going to Paris after his trip to India and Pakistan where "he actually visited the school in Peshawar that was the site of the terrible terrorist attack just a couple of weeks ago." At the State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said "I certainly don't disagree with my colleague at the White House" that US should have sent someone with a higher profile, but added "There was no logistical way Secretary Kerry could go." "He was already on his way, first of all, to India...We have long committed for," she said. "Obviously India is an incredibly

important economic partner. "This was an economic conference. And then of course, once he was in India, he was going to attend this because he thinks it's a very important relationship. So there was just really no way for him to get there," Harf said. Kerry, she said, "did not want to cancel an important trip to India about economics with the new prime minister of India." "As you know, when the Secretary is going someplace, particularly on a trip like India that we've had planned for a long time around an event with Prime Minister Modi, that's very hard to turn off, and he didn't want to," she said. Asked if Kerry had offered to go to Paris, Harf said: It's not

about offering. It's about a discussion about who should attend. And I think, because everyone knew about the Secretary's trip to India and knew how important it was, that it was just not an option." "There were discussions internally about who should go from the US Government. 104 bodies found in Ganga, probe ordered Lucknow (IANS): The Uttar Pradesh government Wednesday ordered a probe after over 100 bodies were found in a channel of the Ganga in Unnao district, an official said. Thirty bodies were recovered from the river's channel till late Tuesday but by Wednesday morning the number swelled up to 104. Director General of Police (DGP) A.K. Gupta has sought a detailed report after recovery of the bodies in the Ganga, near the Periyaar Ghat, where bodies are generally cremated. Kanpur Inspector General of Police Ashutosh Pandey said the bodies belonged to the families who could not afford a decent cremation as per Hindu traditions and dumped them in the river. Gupta, however, has reportedly asked police to probe all angles before arriving at a conclusion. The district administration used JCB machines to fish out the decomposed bodies from the river bed and the encatchment areas, a step protested by residents and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpayi, who visited the site where the bodies have been found, rang up senior officials at night and protested the "inhumane treatment" being meted out to the dead. Officials told IANS that all bodies will be cremated as per tradition by the district administration Wednesday. Meanwhile, volunteers of the Ganga Bachao Andolan (Save Ganga Movement) led by Ramji Tripathi began a sit-in to protest dumping of the dead in the Ganga, which they said, was polluting the river. The recovery of bodies from the Ganga has caused furore among residents as these were found a day before Makar Sankranti festival when thousands take a holy dip in the river.

London (IANS): British Prime Minister David Cameron has offered support to the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust's initiative to install a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at London's prestigious Parliament Square. The prime minister told Asian Lite newspaper that the decision to install a statue of India's Father of the nation at Parliament Square along with Winston Churchill and Nelosn Mandela is wise and timely. “Lots of reasons for the Gandhi statue to be installed at the British Parliament,” Cameron said. “One is the importance of Gandhi to Indian history and the importance of Gandhi’s teachings of non-violence and peaceful protests. I always remember Gandhi’s message to journalists: ‘If you to find yourself, you should lose yourself in the service of others and you should be the change that you want to see in the world’.” The prime minister said, through the initia-

tive, Britain is cementing its historical connection with India. “A statue of Mahatma Gandhi standing alongside Churchill and Mandela at Parliament Square is highly appropriate and I am highly delighted that we have have done this relatively quickly as sometimes the statues take a long time to be commissioned,” Cameron added. The British prime minister said the teachings of Gandhi are relevant to anyone who wants to try to build a bigger and stronger society alongside a prosperous economy. The prime minister also lauded the contribution of British-Asians to the socio-economic sectors of the country. “Looking at Britain’s history, the Asian community plays an absolutely key part in Britain’s economy,” the prime minister said. “It is going to be that SMEs are going to create more jobs in future. People like Dr. Rami Ranger are role models for the younger gen-

eration to emulate. His story is extraordinary. An educated young man coming to England with lots of principles and ambitions but nothing in the pocket. “He became a successful businessman winning five Queens Award for Enterprise. He is serving the community long with his family. His daughter is a local councillor. I believe our country is an opportunity democracy where you can be successful from nothing to something. We unveiled several business schemes (and) the BME (black and minority ethnic) communities are one of the best beneficiaries. Twenty five percent of the start-up loans have gone to the BME communities, (and that) shows entrepreneurship in this community.” Cameron said his government will create more economic ties with India if he is getting a second term in office in the May elections. “India is one of the rising powers of the world, we should really try to work together,”

the prime minister said. “The relationship with India is much stronger now. India invests more into Britain than anywhere in Europe and there is a rise of five billion pounds (over $7.5 billion) since I became the prime minister. Britain is the number one European investor into India and I am sure we can do better in trade.” “The new government will cement and create more economic ties with India especially in the fields of infrastructure, smart cities, corridors for enterprising economic development,” Cameron said. “Britain and India also should work towards a common foreign policy to challenges of our time like terrorism and climate change.” The prime minister said he is looking forward to meet his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Britain. “I hope it wouldn’t be too long,” he added. “I think the next stage would be very exciting.”

Australian ball boy credited for Chinese victory in Asian Cup Canberra (IANS): A 12-yearold ball boy from Brisbane, Australia, could prove to be China's secret weapon at this year's AFC Asian Cup football tournament after he helped goalkeeper Wang Dalei save a penalty in their opening game victory over Saudi Arabia. Stephen White was situated behind the goal China was

defending in the second half of their 1-0 victory when Saudi Arabia were awarded a penalty Saturday night, reports Xinhua. As Saudi Arabian striker Naif Hazazi prepared himself for the spot-kick, Chinese goalkeeper Wang sought inspiration from behind the goal. "He asked if he should go left or right," White told News Ltd.,

which reported the story Tuesday. "I told him left, because that's the way I always go in trying to predict where the ball will go." Wang dived left and saved Hazazi's tame effort, helping China earn a crucial three points to start their tournament. "I was very surprised," White continued. "I was really excited

when he saved it." As was Wang, who immediately pointed in the direction of the 12-year-old following his instinctive save. The celebrations continued after the match, with Wang greeting White with a warm embrace at the final whistle. White was invited to China's training session Monday night

ahead of their upcoming match against Uzbekistan in Brisbane Wednesday. There, he was presented with the jersey worn by Wang over the weekend. "China is now my second team at the tournament after the Socceroos (Australian national team)," White said.

China to ignite national passion for winter sports Beijing (IANS): An estimated 300 million Chinese will be involved in winter sports if Beijing and Zhangjiakou win the bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Over one-third of China's territory has huge potential for developing winter sports. The bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics will encourage 300 million people in northern China to take part in winter

sports, tremendously promoting young people's participation in and the popularisation of winter sports, reports Xinhua. Beijing 2022 bidding efforts will effectively elevate the competition skills of Chinese athletes, and help achieve in China the all-round and balanced development of summer and winter Olympic sports, as well as ice and snow sports. China also hopes to take

advantage of bidding and hosting the Winter Olympics to guide a new lifestyle of fitness and health in the country. Currently, the people participating in regular physical exercises in Beijing and Zhangjiakou has accounted for 49 percent and 37 percent of their total populations respectively. Beijing 2022 bidding is aimed at achieving a balanced devel-

opment of winter sports in Beijing, Zhangjiakou and their surrounding areas, further promoting sport-for-all activities to raise the percentages of sports populations of the two cities to 55 percent and 45 percent respectively, as well as popularising healthy lifestyle among their residents, for the ultimate goal of enhancing the overall fitness and health levels of the whole nation.

To achieve the above objectives, Beijing and Zhangjiakou will organise on a regular basis sports meets for students, employees, professionals, all members of social strata, ethnic groups and people with disabilities, and promote with great efforts such winter sports as skiing, ice skating, ice hockey and curling.

Kiwi players warned of 'honey traps' during World Cup Wellington (IANS): New Zealand cricketers are at risk of "honey traps" laid during the forthcoming World Cup by sophisticated match fixing syndicates, betting chiefs. Weeks before the World Cup, Cricket Players Association chief executive Heath Mills said Sunday that he was convinced match fixers would try to influence the outcome of the tournament, reports nzherald.co.nz. And he and the New Zealand Totalisator Agency Board (TAB), a statutory body for New Zealand

sports betting, believe glamorous women luring stars and then blackmailing them have become one of the biggest risks. "I have no doubt that match fixing groups will be looking at New Zealand and that they have had people on the ground in New Zealand previously," said Mills. He said all players were being given a 90-minute presentation on match fixing risks, including honey traps. That will be backed by an International Cricket Council (ICC) briefing before the tourna-

ment begins with New Zealand playing Sri Lanka February 14. Mills said honey traps were one of many tactics used by sophisticated international criminal groups, which blackmailed players in order to beat the bookies. Players were sometimes groomed for years before the trap was set. "They might notice the person has got family troubles, they might notice they've got financial issues or mental health issues (which they can threaten to

expose)." "The honey trap might be part of that grooming process where there are compromising images or what-have-you," Mills said. The stark warning comes as joint host Australia confirmed it had intelligence suggesting players were sabotaging matches. Detective superintendent Scott Cook said players were being set up to cheat on their partners and then blackmailed with the evidence. TAB spokesman Mark Stafford said such blackmail could prove

more persuasive than traditional match-fixing. Match fixing became a crime in New Zealand last year with the passing of the Crimes (Match Fixing) Amendment Bill. This gives police more power to investigate the offence, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in jail. Mills said sportsmen are often young and oblivious to fraudsters' tactics. And New Zealand's athletes are particularly vulnerable as many are semi-professionals.

Amarinder meets Sonia, seeks leadership change in Punjab New Delhi (IANS): Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh Friday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and is understood to have sought a change ofleadership in party's state unit. Sources said Singh, who is

deputy leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, met Gandhi at her residence and conveyed his views about the working of party's Punjab unit. Singh told her that the party will not be able to win the next

assembly elections in Punjab under present state chief Partap Singh Bajwa, said the sources, adding he told Gandhi that Bajwa has not been able to infuse vigour in the party against the Akali Dal-BJP coalition gov-

ernment. The sources said that Congress smells a good chance in Punjab due to apparent anti-incumbency against the government. The two parties in ruling alliance also have had differences on some

issues including release of Khalistani terrorists and supporters languishing in prisons despite completing their sentences. Assembly elections in Punjab are slated to be held in 2017.

Not just posturing: BJP-Akali ties in deep trouble Chandigarh (IANS): It was shadow boxing earlier between the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab. It is now graduating into a fight at the ground level. The two supposedly allies are doing everything to step on each others' feet. Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also the Punjab deputy chief minister and home minister, has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop the cultivation and production of drugs in BJPruled states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Badal even wants Modi to take up the issue of drug smuggling into Punjab from Pakistan with Islamabad. The reasons for Badal's latest posturing vis-a-vis the BJP and Modi are not hard to analyse.

Modi, during a recent radio address, specifically mentioned Punjab's rampant drugs problem, upsetting the Akalis. Second, the Enforcement Directorate, under the union finance ministry, summoned and questioned Punjab's powerful Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia for over four hours. Majithia, the younger brother of union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Sukhbir Badal's wife), had to face the music following allegations by a drug racket kingpin that he (Majithia) was linked to three NRIs accused of money laundering in a Rs.6,000-crore international synthetic drug racket busted by Punjab Police in 2013. As Majithia was questioned

last month, BJP leaders demanded that he quit the Punjab government. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Badal ruled out his resignation. The Punjab government has now started a PR exercise to "expose" that the drugs problem was not Punjab's creation but "forced" on it by BJP-ruled states, by Pakistan and Afghanistan and states like Himachal Pradesh and Haryana where pharmaceutical units were producing synthetic drugs. After the Lok Sabha polls last year, relations between longtime allies Akali Dal and BJP have been on the brink. Both have tried to embarrass one another. Be it through BJP leader

Navjot Singh Sidhu's barbs against the Badals, the BJP-led central government trying to upstage the Akalis by announcing enhanced compensation to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims and the Akali Dal trying to hit back when the compensation was not implemented immediately, the controversy around Majithia or their stand over drugs - both are trying to outwit each other politically. The BJP is starting an antidrugs campaign in Punjab Jan 22. At the same time, both the Badals, last month, met BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi and, after posing for the photo-op, declared that "all is well" between both parties. Having tasted success in recent assembly elections in

other states, the BJP is looking at a bigger pie for itself in Punjab in the 2017 assembly polls. Till now, the Akali Dal used to give 23 seats to the BJP in the 117-member assembly to contest. The BJP is in no mood to play the second fiddle. In that scenario, the BJP-Akali relationship could head the same way the BJP-Shiv Sena split in Maharashtra before the assembly polls last year. On top of everything, the BJP has turned down the Akali Dal's demand for the release of 13 Khalistani terorists from prisons. The BJP, its leaders say, is preparing itself for bigger things in Punjab - with or without the Akali Dal.

Punjab offers incentives to curb stubble burning Chandigarh (IANS): To curb the menace of straw burning in the state, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Thursday announced incentives of Rs.1 lakh [Rs.100,000] and Rs.1 crore [Rs.10 million] as financial grants to villages and districts which were free from stubble burning across the state.

Pointing out that burning of paddy straw was a health hazard and added to air pollution, he said that the incentive was being offered to motivate people. "Merely resorting to punitive measures to end this curse would not yield any positive results unless the people were properly motivated to give up this anti-

environment and pollution-causing phenomena," Badal said at a workshop organized by union environment, forest and climate change ministry, Central Pollution Control Board and Punjab Pollution Control Board here. He called upon the central and state governments, agriculture scientists, environment experts

and farmers to join hands for putting an end to the unhealthy practice. Badal said that farmers were keen to grow crops in quick succession for better returns. He urged that farmers should be properly trained to make use of the latest agriculture implements and machinery which enable

them to get the straw mixed into the soil, thereby enhancing the fertility of soil besides killing soilfriendly insects. He said that central schemes offered liberal incentives on farm equipment and machinery to encourage farmers to stay away from the menace of straw burning.

Federer completes 1000th career win with Brisbane title Brisbane (IANS): Tennis ace Roger Federer edged past Canadian Milos Raonic to win the Brisbane International title, thereby completing his 1,000th professional career win, here Sunday. The 33-year-old beat Raonic, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4 on Patrick Rafter Arena to clinch his 83rd career title and 1000 wins, the third man to do so after American Jimmy Connors and Czechoslovakian-turned

American Ivan Lendl. Federer now heads to Melbourne to begin preparations for the Australian Open, which begins Jan 19. The Swiss maestro has been in prime form here, brushing aside Australian qualifier James Duckworth in 39 minutes and then beating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in 53 minutes to reach the final. The 17-time Grand Slam champion began the final strong-

ly, breaking Raonic's serve in the third game before going on to take the set 6-4. The Swiss broke in the opening game of the second set, but Raonic broke back for 2-2 and then dominated the tie-break, winning seven successive points to seal the set and level the match. Federer was under pressure in the third round but cameback to break in the tenth game and win in two hours and 13 minutes.

'Pakistan World Cup squad chosen based on nepotism' Islamabad (IANS): Former batsman Mohsin Hasan Khan has alleged that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selectors have chosen the country's World Cup squad based on nepotism, which can hamper their chances of winning the quadrennial event.

“Seeing the final squad for the World Cup, it seems personal interests were preferred over national interests which will cost the Pakistan team heavily,” the former chief selector was quoted as saying by Pakistani daily The Nation. The former head coach

fumed at the fact that names like leg-spinner Yasir Shah and pacer Sohail Khan feature in the squad and termed the selection sarcastically, “quite amazing". Mohsin also felt that fast bowlers Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and Mohammed Irfan

were over utilised and as a result, fizzed out before the world event. The 59-year-old regretted the fact that premier allrounders were overlooked when most teams depended on them to deliver match-winning performances.

“All the major teams of the world mostly rely on allrounders to deliver for the team but Pakistan, having natural gifted all-rounders in shape of Anwar Ali and Bilawal Bhatti, didn’t consider any all-rounder for the mega event,” he added.

I want to match Messi in Ballon d'Or race: Ronaldo Zurich (IANS): After winning his second consecutive Ballon d'Or football award and third overall, Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo has set his sights on Argentine striker Lionel Messi's achievement of winning the coveted prize a record four times. "This is an unforgettable moment. I'm not going to stop here. I want to catch Messi,” Ronaldo said after receiving the award at a gala ceremony here Monday. Messi has won the award in 2009,

2010, 2011 and 2012. Ronaldo first won the trophy in 2008. On winning the trophy twice in a row, he said, "I never thought I'd win such an important trophy, it's such a unique experience. It brings up so many different emotions and I'll use this award as motivation to continue working hard to win more individual and team honours". The 29-year-old also thanked his family and his football colleagues at Portugal club Real Madrid without

whom, he said, he could never have made it this far. "Thanks to everyone who voted for me, to my teammates, my coach, the president and everyone associated with Real Madrid. This is a dream come true for me," the former Manchester United player said. "I'd also like to thank everyone who has helped make me a better player, my national team and everyone in Portugal".

ChaiTime 15 phrases that will change your life in 2015 How we speak -to others and to ourselves -has a huge impact on our overall outlook. So isn't it about time we started paying more attention to what we're communicating? Below are 15 phrases that will transform the way you think, feel and act this year. Using your words to change your life?

SUDOKU

Now that's a resolution worth keeping... "PLEASE" It's among the smallest of words, but it suggests the biggest of manners -which, quite honestly, need to make a comeback. There are a host of benefits that come with practicing good man ners, from increasing social connection to helping you unplug. And think about it: Are you more likely to fulfill a favor if someone asks you nicely? There's power in "please." HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. There are nine zones in the puzzle. Do not enter a digit into a box if it already appears elsewhere in the same zone, row across or column down the entire puzzle. Solve Time: Under 13 min. - Genius; 13-17 min - Scholar; 17-21 min - Smart; 21-25 min - Not bad; 25+ min - Keep practising DIFFICULTY LEVEL : MEDIUM

"BECAUSE" It's a simple word, but it could help you get what you want. According to research published in the new book Magic Words: The Science and Secrets Behind Seven Words That Motivate, Engage, and Influence, those who reasoned

with "because" in a sentence were more likely to receive what they asked for than those who made a request without the word. For example, when asking to cut a line, study participants who said, "Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I'm in a rush?" were given more access than those who didn't give a reason for their request. Why? Because science says so. "I'M TOO BUSY" This one is incredibly important. Put this phrase in your memory -then completely erase it. In the past year, we've been more burned out than ever, and our constant busyness is standing in the way of our capacity f o r j o y. A s a u t h o r A g a p i Stassinopoulos put it in a HuffPost blog this year, "[H]ere's to the end of glorification for our culture's busyness, getting things done on little sleep, and feeling like we have to catch up with the race -because ultimately there is no race except for the one we assign ourselves to." In 2015, let's eliminate the word busy. And actually mean it. "NO"

You can do any thing, but not everything.Sometimes it's simply OK to just say "no" if you're too overwhelmed, especially if it means you'll avoid burnout. As HuffPost President and EditorInChief Arianna Huffington pointed out at a women's business conference in 2013, sometimes the best way to complete a project is by dropping it entirely."That doesn't mean ignoring my other needs, but it means when I'm in it, I'm really in it. And that means often saying no to good things, to things that you might want to do, but get in the way of sleep, or get in the way of being with your children, or whatever it is that's also very important to you," she said.

Saying "thank you" not only acknowledges the other person's kind words, but hopefully it'll help you believe them, too. "GOODNIGHT" This phrase by itself isn't as important as when you say it. Hint: Say it as soon as you're tired. Too often, one of the first things we neglect is sleep, when we really should be prioritising it. According to a recent survey, more than half of American adults say they need at least eight hours of sleep --but nearly three quarters say they get less than that.Time to start hitting the hay earlier! To Be Continued

Answer

"THANK YOU" According to Binghamton University research, only a third of people accept a compliment graciously, say reports. It's no secret that many of us get squeamish when receiving compliments -and as a result, the response is usually laced with self-depre cating humour that brushes off a genuine statement.

Wednesday/Thursday: There can be more than the usual activity midweek and some spectacle that is a bit overboard. Analyse whether you are adding fuel to the fire or just a mere spectator. It could feel comical if you are viewing it from the outside. Friday: You are appealing and charming. People are attracted to you. The spotlight is on you. Weekend:Avoid conflict.

Monday/Tuesday: This could be a time to organize yourself, possibly in all aspects of your life – your career, domestic and community life as well. All this will add to your popularity and efficiency as the week goes by. Wednesday/Thursday: You may have a sudden insight / revelation or awakening that motivates you to be openminded to a new way of life. Friday: It is a great time to spend with close pals, loved ones or important folks you trust. You could sense a evolution within yourself. Weekend: You are lost and for most part living in your head.

Monday/Tuesday:An individual that you are associated or working with requires specific focus and attention from you as the new week begins this Monday. Try to read the in between lines and not just what is being said. There is a lot more to explore than what you expected. Wednesday/Thursday: Midweek could find you retreating from your earlier stand. It is not about you not believing in yourself but more about being accommodating and flexible. Decide whether the task or proposal at hand has legal validation or no before you go-ahead on it. Friday: Original, intuitive and tasks that involve imagination go well. Weekend: Seek someone's advice this weekend.

Monday/Tuesday:You are game for almost anything that comes across this Monday. You are likely to be in your best form now, both in your personal and professional life as well. Wednesday/Thursday: Midweek is good for experimentation, trying a new approach to an old nagging issue or searching for an alternative to the path you have taken so far in life. You are open minded and willing to take a calculated risk. Friday: While you are definitely in a mood to take some fast forward action, the folks around you may not be able to match up to your speed and expectations. Don't get irritated and anxious. Weekend: Think before you get in to a conflict with someone close.

Monday/Tuesday: Make a budget for yourself as the new week dawns this Monday and stick to it. Proceeding the moderate way with your funds and income is what would work in your favour, early this week. Wednesday/Thursday: There could be sparks flying between you and someone special as midweek unfolds. It could be an individual, an organisation or a group of people. You could draw positive attention from people who matter. Friday: As the week draws to an end, things could get a bit foggy or confusing. Use this time to tackle your doubts / indecisiveness. Weekend: Rest, relax and rejuvenate.

US, Pakistan to intensify fight against terror Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan must fight militant groups that threaten Indian, US and Afghan interests, US Secretary of State John Kerry said, and offered $250 million aid for militancy affected people Tuesday. Visiting Pakistan after going to India over the weekend, Kerry said all terrorist groups should be targeted for the security of the region. Terror groups like the Tehreeke-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Afghan Taliban, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba (Let), and other terrorist groups continue to pose a threat to Pakistan, its neighbours and to the US," Kerry said during a joint press conference here with Pakistan foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz. While listing some of the most feared terrorist groups, he said "all of us have a responsibility to ensure that these terrorist groups do not gain a foothold but rather are pushed back into the recesses of (Pakistan's) memory." Most US-led forces in neighbouring Afghanistan officially completed their combat mission last month, prompting concerns about the stability of the region where insurgents have been increasingly aggressive in the past months. Following the Dec 16 Taliban

attack on the Peshawar Army School in which over 140 students and teachers were killed, Pakistan promised to stop differentiating between "good" and "bad" militants and to step up operations against their hideouts on the Afghan border. Kerry expressed appreciation for the sacrifices of Pakistan's military personnel and civilians in the fight against terrorism and extremism and commended Pakistan's resolve and the steps being taken to tackle terrorism in a comprehensive and robust manner. Kerry said Washington, which has spent billions of dollars on military aid to Pakistan will help it to fight insurgents and would provide an additional $250 million aid in food, shelter and other assistance to help people displaced by the conflict in the tribal areas. Speaking alongside Kerry, Sartaj Aziz made a plea to the US to keep giving Pakistan money to help rebuild the regions where the Pakistani military has been fighting militant groups. "We expect our defence forces to remain engaged in counter-terrorism operations for some time in the foreseeable future," Aziz said. "Continuation of coalition support fund reimbursements is therefore a valuable support that

defence relationship. Kerry and Aziz noted that a peaceful, stable, independent, united and prosperous Afghanistan is vital for peace and stability in the region. Kerry welcomed the renewed and intensified engagement between Pakistan and Afghanistan, including President Ashraf Ghani's visit to Pakistan. He encouraged continued dialogue and cooperation between both sides, recognising the importance of cooperation for the stability of Afghanistan, Pakistan and the broader region. Meanwhile, during the joint press conference, key advisor Aziz said the US being an influential member of the international community could prevail upon India to work with Pakistan for regional peace and economic prosperity. "The cancellation of foreign secretary-level talks by India, followed by the recent incidents of unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary (International Border) are a source of serious concern to Pakistan," he said. "We hope, therefore, that US as an influential member of the international community can prevail upon India to work with Pakistan

must continue in the interests of both countries". Aziz and Kerry reaffirmed their shared commitment to expanding and deepening bilateral economic, trade and investment cooperation. The Economic and Finance Working Group reviewed the progress made in promoting bilateral economic relations in Oct 2014 in Washington. The US acknowledged the progress made by Pakistan in steadying its economy and advancing the reform agenda defined by Prime Minister Sharif and his government in close cooperation with the International Monetary Fund and other multilateral institutions. Kerry welcomed Pakistan's efforts to improve its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework in cooperation with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Both sides expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the 23rd round of the Defence Consultative Group (DCG) held in Washington December 2014 and committed to areas for future defence cooperation. They noted that the DCG Working Group played a role in strengthening cooperation to support both countries' security interests. Both sides renewed their mutual commitment to a strong

towards regional peace and economic prosperity." Kerry said that Sharif deserved a lot of credit for his leadership in reaching out to his neighbours to develop peace and understanding. "I can't emphasise enough that it is profoundly in the interest of Pakistan and India to move their relationship forward," Kerry said. "This is the hardest time to work; it means you have to put a lot of time and effort into overcoming historical mistrust, past events and enmities that come from that history. "We have to create a pact for sustainable peace through dialogue. We applaud the efforts to do so, we encourage both Pakistan and India to re-engage and the US will do whatever it can to try to help in that effort," Kerry added. The US is committed to boosting its security and intelligence cooperation with Pakistan, and will continue to stand with Pakistan in its difficult hour, Kerry added. "Just as we stand with the people of France in its difficult hour, America will continue to stand with the people of Pakistan as they build a future that is free from the threat of violent extremism," Dawn quoted him as saying at the press conference.

Pakistan continues drive against terrorism, 297 arrested Islamabad (IANS): At least 593 cases have been registered and 297 people have been arrested across Pakistan's Punjab for inciting violence. Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Mushtaq Sukhera said that strict action would be

taken against extremists, those inciting violence and accessories to terrorists across Punjab, Daily Dunya reported. He said the police have begun its crackdown and that it would continue until the elimination of all such elements in

the province. Similarly, 16 cases have been registered for inciting people to violence through speeches on loudspeakers and 130 people have been arrested. Twenty five more people have been arrested over hateful

wall chalking and cases have been registered against several others. Through raids, the police have also seized a large amount of hate-speech material including books, pamphlets, banners, newspapers, and

electronic accessories. Moreover, the Mughalpura police in Punjab also took the imam of the Jamia Masjid Hanafia Shamsia into custody for misuse of loudspeaker.

Post 'Gun Pe Done', director plans 'Ringtone Ki Love Story' FILMMAKER Abhik Bhanu seems to be fascinated with quirky titles for his Bollywood projects. After directing "Gun Pe Done", which is yet to see the light of day, he has announced that his next film is titled "Ringtone Ki Love Story", about an orphan. Talking about the movie, Bhanu told IANS: "My next film is titled 'Ringtone Ki Love Story', it's a musical love story and unlike 'Gun Pe Done', which has 42 characters, this film will feature four main characters." The movie has an original script and its story revolves around an orphan from Bangladesh who comes to India with a huge vision in his mind. Bhanu says that since it's a musical, viewers should expect many songs. "There is a keen concern signing a

renowned music director," he added. "Ringtone Ki Love Story" will be produced by Manoj Menon and Asif Kazi under Pioneer Films and Entertainment LLP. Asked about the film's cast, he said: "We shall not compromise in signing the lead character, as the whole story revolves around this character. We shall be very happy to get any of Aditya Roy Kapur, Arjun Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana or Ranveer Singh on board as I strongly feel that either of these can justify the character in my film." What about the leading lady? "We shall repeat Tara Alisha Berry, as she has given a fabulous performance in 'Gun Pe Done'," he said. (IANS)

Stepped out of my comfort zone in 'Badlapur': Huma Qureshi ACTRESS Huma Qureshi, who will soon be seen in dark, intense and revenge drama "Badlapur", says it's a special film for her as she got a chance to work with her favourite director Sriram Raghavan, who made sure she was out of her comfort zone. At the launch of a magazine's cover here Monday, Huma opened up about her role in the movie, which also stars Varun Dhawan. "In 'Badlapur', my character's name is Jhumli. It's a special film for me because I got a chance to work with my favourite director, Sriram Raghavan. I'm a huge fan of him. And from the time I saw his films, 'Ek Hasina Thi' , 'Johnny Gaddaar', I really wanted to work with him," she said. Huma, who has earlier been appreciated for her work in films like "Gangs of Wasseypur", "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken

Khurana", "Ek Thi Daayan", "D-Day" and "Dedh Ishqiya", believes the role in "Badlapur" has challenged her in a different way. “About my character, I would only say that Sriram (director) really put me outside my comfort zone. I think Jhumli is a character that I possibly did just because of him. I don't think I would have put myself through playing such a difficult character," she said. The actress even recollected one day during the shoot when she "literally broke down". She hopes audiences "really enjoy how much hard work we have pulled together in the film". “Badlapur", which also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Divya Dutta in key roles, is set to release Feb 20. Taken 3 (PG) ****

Being on your own can be a drag. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Food for thought involving a man on a mission highlights Taken 3. Lucky 20th Century Fox wisely greenlit the third in This impressive series. Fit for all freedom-loving people check out this must see actioner at Cineplex Odeon Theatres around B.C. Under the radar is how

mild-mannered Bryan Mills likes to live his life. Mature Liam Neeson (Schindler's List) is perfectly suited to play the retired special ops operative. Call Mills the spy who stayed out in the cold as now all he wants to do is catch up on some rays in sunny California. Fans of the first two Taken films knows that Mills is quite the family man and will protect his daughter Kim and ex-wife Lenore with whom he still remains friendly. Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen (Goldeneye) do do justice to their characters. When Lenore left for dead and Mills hung out to dry as a man with blood on his hands it sets

the stage for a monumental struggle for survival. And revenge! With Los Angeles the battleground the action here is adrena-

lin pumping. Thanks to a clever story by The Transporter mastermind Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) and solid direc-

tion by Olivier Megaton Taken 3 simply rocks! Tension is at an all time high in This heart-pounding thriller. Lots of room

for surprises and much wiggle room competes with a very clever and fresh script and a wonderful good guy/bad guy dynamic that will keep you guessing between well choreographed stunts. Neeson is in top form and is totally believable (and commendable) as a man searching for answers, trying to elude his legion of pursuers and ultimately saving the day. Perhaps Solid casting including Oscar winning Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) as a crusading detective make this 109 minute movie fun throughout. Rumour has it that this will be the final film in the Taken series. Say it isn't so.

'Transformers: Age of Extinction' tops Razzie nominees Los Angeles, Jan 14 (IANS) Filmmaker Michael Bay's film “Transformers: Age of Extinction” has been nominated for seven awards at the 35th Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies. The fourth installment in the popular sci-fi “Transformers” franchise is nominated for worst picture along with “Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas”, “Left Behind”, “The Legend of Hercules” and “Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtles”, reports aceshowbiz.com. Following the footsteps of its predecessors, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” has emerged in the "worst of the

worst" list, leading the pack with seven nominations, followed by “Saving Christmas” and “Legend of Hercules”, which earned six nominations each. All three of them are nominated in the worst director category. In acting categories, Cameron Diaz tops other actors with three nominations. She is nominated for worst actress (for “The Other Woman” and “Sex Tape”), worst supporting actress (for “Annie”) and

worst screen combo (with Jason Segel in “Sex Tape”). “The Expendables 3” cast members Mel Gibson, Kelsey Grammer (who also stars in “Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return”, “Think Like a Man Too” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction”) and Arnold Schwarzenegger are all nominated for the worst actor title. terror attacks, sectarian violence, targeted killings, security operations and drone strikes in 2014 compared to 5,687 in 2013, an official report here has revealed. The number of deaths witnessed a three-time increase because of security operations but fatalities from the militant attacks, terror and targeted killings decreased by 15 percent, Dawn reported Saturday. However, 35 percent increase in the overall deaths was recorded during the year. "The major increase in violence was observed in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas

CRSS official said. "The reason for the increase in deaths in FATA is the military-led operation "Zarb-e-Azb" in the North Waziristan Agency," he said. "The second largest increase was in Punjab where deaths from violence rose from 120 in 2013 to 309 in 2014. A part of the increased figures may be attributed to the Nov 2, 2014, bombing at the Wagah border which killed 60 people," the official added. The report also said that the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa region witnessed a decrease in violence-related deaths -945 in 2014 compared to

lence-related casualties from 20 in 2013 to just three in 2014. A total of 133 women and 270 children were also killed in violence of one form or another. About 40 schools and three colleges were also bombed while 26 principals, professors and teachers as well as 143 students were killed. The ministry of state and frontier regions (Safron), through a letter last week, informed home secretaries and commissioners of Afghan refugees in the coun-

At least two million Afghan nationals are residing in Pakistan without valid documents, said officials. However, the ministry said that Afghan refugees holding

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is facilitating voluntary repatriation of 1.6 million registered Afghans from Pakistan. The repatriation process is going on very slowly and only 16,000 Afghans were repatriated last year.

I believe that in India, there is no actor who can rise above the material. The director and writers of this film, have given me a lot. It's fun to have commercial success along with fun while working with the character. I am thankful to the writer and producer of this film," he said. (IANS)

For Your Health

Basil is an herbal antibiotic, antiseptic, carminative, and appetizer that has an special

affinity for the stomach. Basil significantly benefits the stomach during digestion and can

25

provide immediate relief from gas, stomach cramps, and nausea. It also contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties and can provide relief for inflamed bowel conditions such as colitis, IBS, crohn’s and celiac disease. It is also highly antibacterial and antiviral making it effective against bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, colds, flu, mono, shingles, and herpes. Basil is a rich source of magnesium which relaxes muscles and blood vessels and supports cardiovascular health by lowering the risk of irregular heart rhythms and spasms. The essential oil of basil contains

eugenol which works similarly to aspirin and ibuprofen in decreasing the swelling in

joints and tissues to provide relief from arthritis and fibromyalgia. Basil’s fungicidal properties also aid in healing wounds, skin rashes, warts, and insect bites. You can purchase creams and salves or crush fresh leaves in a small amount of coconut oil, apply to the skin, and wrap with a fresh bandage daily. Consider making fresh basil a staple in your diet and regularly add to salads, homemade pesto, guacamole, green smoothies, and even fruits like strawberries and bananas, the health properties are not to be missed.

The Indo-Canadian

London, Jan 14 (IANS) People who work more than 48 hours per week are more likely to engage in risky alcohol consumption than those who work normal weeks worldwide, finds a global study spanning across 14 countries. Risky alcohol consumption is considered as more than 14 drinks per week for women and more than 21 drinks per week for men. It is believed to increase risk of adverse health problems, including liver diseases, cancer, stroke, coronary heart disease and mental disorders.

In an analysis of 333,693 people in 14 countries, they found that longer working hours increased the likelihood of higher alcohol use by 11 percent. A prospective analysis found a similar increase in risk of 12 percent for onset of risky alcohol use in 100,602 people from nine countries. Individual participant data from 18 prospective studies showed that those who worked 49-54 hours and 55 hours per week or more were found to have an increased risk of 13 percent and 12 percent respectively of risky alcohol consumption compared with those who worked 35-40 hours per week. The authors point out that no differences were seen between men and women or by age, socio-economic status or region. "The workplace is an important setting for the prevention of alcohol misuse because more than half of the adult population are employed," said lead researcher Marianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute

2015 Chevrolet Sonic RS hatchback. Small with a big heart! The sporty Sonic RS version 5door hatchback is a mall, finehandling, fun to drive sub compact. The RS still features the 1.4-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine as in the up-scale Sonic LTZ, producing the same 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque, but adds: a six-speed transmissions with quicker gear ratios, lowered and stiffer suspension dampers and fourwheel disc brakes unique to the RS. The power output is very good and beats competitors such as the Honda Fit Sport, the Ford Fiesta and the Toyota Yaris. Unique exterior dress up items include: special matt finish fivespoke 17-inch wheels with 205/50R17 tires, special RS-exclusive front/rear fascias, rear spoiler, lower rockers panel extension and a chrome exhaust tip. The interior cabin receives a dose of adrenalin with nice ‘RS’ embossed leather seats with faux suede trim, contrasting red stitching on the seats and mats, RS badges and a funky, thick rimmed- racestyle flat-bottom steering wheel and aluminum pedals. Our black painted tester certainly looked cool and ready to rock. The RS also features Chevrolet's MyLink infocommutainment system as standard on the RS, interfacing through a seven-inch colour touchscreen.

This clever system enables full use of: smartphones to access music, video, photo, phone books, navigation and other information into the vehicle — via an available smartphone app. OnStar, which comes standard on all Sonics (a subscription is required after the first six months) is also fitted. . The Sonic RS comes in at a base price of $23,995. Two other trim levels are offered: the midrange LT ($16,495) and top-ofthe-line LTZ ($20,495.) All Sonics equipped with a manual gearbox get a hill hold assist system as standard equipment. The Peace of Mind Package, supplements the standard six air

bags (dual-stage front air bags, two front-seat side air bags and dual head curtain units with rollover protection) with dual outboard rear-seat side air bags and dual knee units, including one for the passenger — a segment exclusive. This package adds $465 to the list price. Inside, the Sonic is modern and sporty with unique instrument panel and center console design available in titanium finish. The audio controls are mounted on top and large round climate controls below in the fascia. Front bucket seats are standard and optionally heated, while the rear seats fold flat. Cargo area in the hatchback is

869 litres (30.7 cu. ft) with the rear seats folded. The cargo area in the five-door also has a removable false floor that creates a level surface when the seats are folded. Electronic power steering is standard, and Engineers working with the Corvette apparently helped tune the suspension and handling! On the road, the RS feels fast with the no severe turbo lag. The slick six speed manual shifter has a light action and is fast enough for spirited acceleration with a 0-100 km/h dash of around 10.0 seconds. Combine the tactile steering, slightly lower profile, firmer suspension, and the Sonic's compact dimensions and you get a

fun car to drive. Fast bends, long curves and the cut and thrust of traffic show off the Sonics eager to please chassis dynamics and tossability. Even the larger 17 inch wheels and rubber do not upset the well-engineered chassis, delivering a firm, yet comfortable ride on all surfaces. During testing our five-door Sonic proved to be a fun to drive, zippy car. There is a price to pay however, the small 1.4 liter engines has to work hard to keep rev ups, and with revised shorter transmission gearing –highway fuel consumption is up a tad at (city/hwy): 8.2/5.9 L/100 km. The Sonic RS proves to be a very entertaining to drive subcompact car with plenty of room, features and practicality. 2015 Chevrolet Sonic Five-door hatchback priced from $23,995 Price as tested with option, taxes and destination $26,940.

India following 'constructive engagement' policy with China: Army chief New Delhi (IANS): India was following a policy of "constructive engagement" with China, army chief Gen. Dalbir Singh said Tuesday, and noted that demarcation of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between the two countries was the first step towards resolution of the border dispute. Addressing the annual press conference ahead of Army Day, Gen. Dalbir Singh said acquisition of artillery guns, third-generation missiles, upgrading armoured vehicles, augmenting army aviation and strengthening infantry were among "critical areas" for force modernisation that were being put on fast-track. He said infrastructure development, especially along the northern and

northeastern borders, remains a priority to "meet the large capability gap". "Our borders with China remain peaceful as we pursue a policy of constructive engagement. Our confidence building measures have been very effective. Increased army-to-army exchanges have improved our mutual understanding over contentious issues," he said. He said the Indian security forces were keeping a careful watch over the situation in Afghanistan and its possible spillover into India following withdrawal of the NATO troops. Gen. Dalbir Singh said demarcation of the LAC, of which India and China have varied perception in

some areas, was the first step towards resolution of the border dispute. He said the two countries patrol according to their perception of the LAC, leading to the possibility of transgression and face-offs in some areas. Asked if Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed to the Chinese leadership about demarcating the LAC, he said such a move will definitely help in resolving the border problem between the two countries. He said the prime minister giving the suggestion was "itself a reflection (that) this is the first step towards resolution of the border dispute". "No doubt, unless the LAC gets demarcated, there cannot be further progress in resolving the

(question of) boundary," he said. Answering a query on the new mountain strike corps, the army chief said it was progressing as per laid down timelines and it will "significantly raise" capabilities on the northern front. "Our threats and challenges continue to grow in intensity and commitment because of active border that we have," he said. To a query, he said one will have to "wait and watch" if the Pakistan Army had a change of heart since the attack on a Peshawar school by militants. Answering another query, he said a national war memorial will come up in the India Gate area and the war museum will

come up at Prince's Park. Gen. Dalbir Singh also said he had "very good" operational experience during the Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and it served him well in his postings later. Terming his professional journey "very satisfying", he said he offered to go to Sri Lanka and stayed there till the unit came back. The army chief was the Company Commander during Operation Pawan, the codename for the mission of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in northern and eastern Sri Lanka in the late 1980s that lasted some 30 months. He said construction of about 70,000 dwelling units was planned under the third phase of the

married accommodation plan. Referring to achievements of army personnel in sports, he said "Mission Olympics remains on track to bring greater glory to the nation". To a question about the seventh pay commission, he said the three services have a common proposal. "We, the three service chiefs, decided that our projection must be well understood by the pay commission," he said. Gen. Dalbir Singh also said the pay commission members visited difficult areas such as Siachen and Kargil and also desert areas. "We hope we will be able to meet the aspirations (of service personnel)," he said.

John denies animosity with 'good friend' Akshay ACTOR John Abraham has replaced Akshay Kumar in "Welcome Back" and "Hera Pheri 3". But he says this has not had any effect on their camaraderie. Asked about it, John said: "When I signed 'Welcome Back', I called up Akshay and I gave him the news first. He was very happy and said, 'It's a great film to do'." "During 'Hera Pheri 3', I told

him about it and he is a friend...we have worked together before. We are good friends. There is no animosity between us." "Hera Pheri 3", to be directed by Neeraj Vora, also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. John was last seen in "Madras Cafe", which was also his home production.

New 2015 Ford F150 pickup truck set the standard for full size pickup trucks

Ford introduces the all-new Ford F150, the reinvention of America’s favorite truck. Ford says the new icon truck is the toughest, smartest and most capable F-150 ever – setting the standard for the future of trucks. In designing the backbone of the F-150, Ford engineers improved the truck’s signature fully boxed ladder frame. It is all-new with more highstrength steel than ever – making it stronger and lighter. High-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloys – already used in aerospace, commercial transportation, energy and many other rugged industries – are used throughout the F-150 body for the first time, improving dent and ding resistance and also saving weight. Overall, up to 700 pounds of weight have been saved, helping the F-150 tow more, haul more, accelerate quicker and stop shorter, and contributing to efficiency. “More than ever before, customers want a truck that is a dependable partner, mobile office and a go-anywhere workshop,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “To meet the needs of our truck customers, we created smart new features and a whole new approach to using advanced materials and engines to improve capability and efficiency.” The frame uses high-strength steel rated up to 70,000 psi – stronger than the steel found in some competitors’ heavy-duty pickup truck frames. Eight throughwelded cross members provide increased stiffness, while staggered rear outboard shocks provide greater stability. Several ground-breaking new

productivity features debut in the allnew F-150, including many classexclusives. They include: 360degree camera view, using exterior cameras to create a bird’s-eye view of the truck to help the driver park, maneuver in tight spots and navigate down narrow roads and trails, Integrated loading ramps, which enable easy loading of ATVs, motorcycles and mowers, BoxLink™, which is a combination of metal brackets and custom cleats used to secure a variety of accessories in the cargo box, from ramps to storage bins to bed dividers, LED headlamps and tail lamps, which provide excellent nighttime visibility, Trailer hitch assist, a new rear view camera feature that adds a dynamic line based on steering wheel angle in the display to help customers line up truck and trailer without requiring a spotter or having to get out of the vehicle, Remote tailgate, allow-

ing for the tailgate to be locked, unlocked and released with the key fob – eliminating manual locking and increasing convenience and security. In addition there the tailgate is also damped, dropping down, hands-free, to a flat position when opened, High-wattage power outlets (400 watts, 110 volts) in the cab, allowing drivers to easily charge corded tools, battery chargers or mobile devices on-site or while driving, LED spotlights on side view mirrors, which provide powerful, durable and bright lighting around the truck exterior, Latest EcoBoost® technology in an all-new, even more efficient 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine that features extremely high output and lightweight design, Next-generation tailgate step, which is now fully integrated inside the tailgate and virtually invisible when not in use

A range of four engines provides more power to meet almost any customer need. A new 2.7-liter EcoBoost with standard Auto StartStop and a 3.5-liter V6 engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing join the proven 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine features a lightweight, compact design to deliver the same power as some mid-range V8s. Auto Start-Stop technology helps save fuel. Unlike start-stop solutions in other vehicles, this technology – specially tuned for truck customers – shuts off the engine to save fuel when the vehicle is stopped, except when towing or in four-wheel drive. The engine restarts in milliseconds when the brake is released. Ford F150 trucks equipped with EcoBoost engines also will benefit from standard Active Grille Shutters. Active

Grille Shutters stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during low-speed stop-and-go driving or while working in hot weather. They automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag at cruising speed. Both the exterior and interior design of Ford F-150 reflect decades of listening to customers and understanding their occupational and recreational needs. The exterior is characterized by a new shape that suggests capability, with a wider Built Ford Tough stance, prominent wheel arches and chiseled grille. Comfort, utility and refinement define the truck’s interior. Ergonomically optimized seating for the front row positions enhances comfort, while extending legroom for rear passengers. Buttons and controls are optimized so they can be operated while wearing work gloves. Storage options include laptop stowage in the center console, as well as quick storage solutions When it goes on sale late this year, the all-new Ford F-150 will continue the tradition of offering the broadest selection of trim levels in the full-size pickup segment. Five primary trims are available: XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. Chrome appearance packages are available with XL, XLT, Lariat and King Ranch. Monochromatic sport appearance packages are available with XL, XLT and Lariat. The FX4 off-road package can be added to most four-wheel-drive models, improving trail capability with an electronic locking rear axle, skid plates and off-road-tuned shocks. Prices will be announced shortly

Lincoln MKX offers the first high-end Revel® audio system in a vehicle, and an available advanced 2.7-litre EcoBoost® engine. “We are focused on delivering engaging and refined luxury vehicles with innovative and thoughtful technologies.” said Kumar Galhotra, president of Lincoln. “The all-new Lincoln MKX reflects that focus.” The all-new Lincoln MKX goes on sale first in the United States this fall, followed by other markets including China, Canada, the Middle East, Mexico and South Korea. The Lincoln MKX further strengthens Lincoln’s position in the global midsize premium utility segment, which represents 11 per cent of the global automotive luxury market and is expected to grow to 12 per cent by 2018.* It is the largest luxury segment in Canada, representing 28 per cent of the luxury automotive market. Leading the engine choices for the 2016 Lincoln MKX is the available advanced 2.7- twin turbocharged Ti-VCT EcoBoost V6. It is projected to deliver more than 330 horsepower and more than 370 lb.-ft. of torque,

based on preliminary test data. The standard engine is a 3.7V6, projected to deliver 300 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, based on preliminary test data. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with push-button shift. SelectShift® functionality is accessed through paddles on the steering wheel. The addition of the integral link rear suspension, upgrades to the body structure and chassis components, make the new model the best-handling, bestriding and quietest Lincoln MKX ever.Standard Lincoln Drive Control, a suite of ride-enhancing technologies, optimizes performance and offers three distinct modes: Normal, Sport and Comfort. The all-new Lincoln MKX adds pre-collision assist, which may help avoid or lessen the severity some frontal crashes with another vehicle or pedestrian in certain situations and conditions. If the system detects another vehicle or pedestrian, the system will first provide a collision warning and then the system will automatically apply braking if the driver has not taken any corrective action. Also new is the Auto Hold feature, which relieves the driver from having to press the brake pedal continuously to keep the vehicle stationary in traffic.

Auto Hold releases the brakes when the accelerator pedal is pressed. First for Lincoln, to enhance driver visibility, available LED headlamps include a feature that adapts when accelerating from 0 to 35 mph by adding width to the low-beam pattern through the use of additional LED reflector elements. Uncompromising acoustics and award-winning home theater audio quality comes to the Lincoln MKX through the available Revel audio system. The Revel Ultima system is standard on Lincoln Black Label editions and available on Reserve models. It features 19 speakers with point source architecture, which positions the tweeter and midrange speakers close together for superior audio quality. Facebook knows you better than your friends for accuracy of broad psychological traits. "In the future, computers could be able to infer our psychological traits and react accordingly, leading to the emergence of emotionallyintelligent and socially skilled machines," said lead study author Wu Youyou from Cambridge's psychometrics centre. For the new study, the researchers used a sample of 86,220 volunteers on Facebook who completed a 100-item personality questionnaire through the 'myPersonality'

app as well as providing access to their "likes". They found that the computer model could more accurately predict the subject's personality than a work colleague by analysing just 10 "likes"; more than a friend or a roommate with 70 "likes", a family member (parent, sibling) with 150 and a spouse with 300 "likes". Given that an average Facebook user has about 227 "likes" (and this number is growing steadily), the researchers say that this kind of artificial intelligence has the

potential to know us better than our closest companions. According to Michal Kosinski, co-author and researcher at Stanford, machines have a couple of key advantages that make these results possible: the ability to retain and access vast quantities of information and the ability to analyse it with algorithms - the techniques of "Big Data". The automated, accurate and cheap personality assessments could improve societal and personal decision-making in many ways - from recruit-

ment to romance. "People may choose to augment their own intuitions and judgments with this kind of data analysis when making important life decisions such as choosing activities, career paths or even romantic partners," added Cambridge coauthor David Stillwell. The results might also raise concerns over privacy as such technology develops, the authors contended. The findings appeared in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
