Activists oppose ban on 'India's Daughter'

GUARANTEED Absolute Lowest Prices !

New Delhi (IANS): Women activists on Thursday strongly opposed the blanket ban on a BBC documentary titled "India's Daughter" on the December 16, 2012 gang rape of a young woman in Delhi, arguing that the "knee-jerk" reaction constitutes an attack on freedom of expression. "I have seen the documentary. It is powerful and moving. It does not sensationalize anything," CPI-M politburo member and women's rights activist Brinda Karat told IANS. "This is the fourth time that the government has banned a documentary without viewing it," she said. The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) in a statement said it opposes the blanket ban on the documentary. "This is a knee jerk reaction that constitutes an attack on the freedom of expression. Furthermore, the film reveals the reality of the brutality of rape without sensationalising it," it said. AIDWA further said that the correct course of action for the government is to file an FIR and take prompt action against the defence lawyers in the case for making hateful and derogatory

Lok Sabha passes bill to amend Citizenship Act New Delhi / Jammu (IANS): The Lok Sabha Monday passed a bill that allows the central government to notify that Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders shall be considered Overseas Citizen of India card-holders. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2015, which was passed by a voice vote, seeks to replace the ordinance

brought by the government in January. The bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 and provide, among other things, for "registration of overseas citizen of India card-holder and also that the persons of Indian origin card-holders shall be deemed to be overseas citizen of India card-holders". Participating in the debate, N.K.

Premachandran of the Revolutionary Socialist Party said the government had brought the ordinance to fulfill the promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to overseas Indians during his visit to the US. Referring to the bill introduced in the winter session, which the government had withdrawn before introduction of the new bill, he said it reflect-

ed the "callous manner" in which the previous bill was drafted. Intervening in the debate, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the government intended to give benefits to overseas Indians before the day marking the 100th year of

Speaking separately, Yadav, a known political pundit, said the AAP decision would be announced by the party and he was no more authorized to make announcements on behalf of the party. "As a disciplined worker of the party, I will try to fulfil whatever role is assigned to me to the best of my capacity." He added: "The AAP has been formed with the sweat and labour of people. It should never dash people's hopes."

Aam Aadmi Party remained a united force and would do all it can to meet the aspirations of the people of Delhi and the country. "Everyone (in the party) will together take the party forward," he added. The National Executive also rejected Kejriwal's offer to resign as the national convenor. The nine-member PAC is the supreme body in the AAP, which was formed in 2012 and which stormed to power in Delhi last month by sweeping 67 of the 70 seats in the assembly. Wednesday's meeting was called after Bhushan and Yadav were accused by Kejriwal supporters of leading a virtual rebellion against the AAP leader. Earlier, Bhushan, a

YouTube blocks access to BBC documentary, government serves legal notice New Delhi (IANS): YouTube on Thursday began blocking access to the controversial BBC documentary on the December 16, 2012 gang rape, citing court orders, while the government served legal notice to the top news channel after it ignored a court's restraining order and aired the documentary carrying an interview with one of the rape convicts. The documentary "India's Daughter", by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, carries an interview with Mukesh Singh,

BBC. "The notice says that they (BBC) had violated the contract on various fronts," a home ministry official told IANS. "They were supposed to take final approval from the Tihar jail authorities on the interview of the convicts but they did not do so, and according to the contract signed with the BBC, they were barred to use the documentary for commercial purpose, which they have violated too," he said. Earlier in the day, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the

one of the six men who brutally raped a 23-year-old woman on December 16, 2012. The documentary has kicked up a storm in India, with some women's groups demanding a ban. The BBC aired the documentary on Wednesday night, advancing the date from its scheduled March 8 broadcast. Support for the documentary has built up among people after they saw the documentary. A home ministry official said legal notice was served to the

government was "examining all aspects" related to the documentary and would take action, if required. Before airing the film in Britain and some other countries, the BBC had assured the government that it would not be aired in India. They then went ahead and showed it, and the film was subsequently uploaded on YouTube. "The BBC had planned to air the film on March 8, but they showed it on March 4, the home ministry said, wondering "what was the hurry?"

The information and broadcasting ministry has directed Indian news channels not to telecast the documentary. On Thursday evening, the documentary was unavailable on several YouTube channels, with the message "This content is not available on this country domain due to a court order". The parents of the rape victim said they were against airing of the documentary. "I am surprised that BBC uploaded its documentary on YouTube in spite of the court's

restraining order. The BBC has hurt the pride of India. The act of BBC clearly shows that they don't have fear of Indian law and our country," the victim's father told IANS. Hours after the BBC telecast "India's Daughter", the hash tag #IndiasDaughter became the top global trend on social networking site Twitter on Thursday. Two other hash tags #NirbhayaInsulted and #DontRapeAgain were also trending on second and fourth positions, respectively.

India: Make election of UN secretary-general more democratic United Nations (IANS) With Ban ki-Moon's second term as secretary-general ending next year, India has called for making the election of his successor more democratic and

open by giving the UN General Assembly (UNGA) a greater say and ending the Security Council permanent members' near total control of the process.

Bhagwant S. Bishnoi, India's deputy permanent representative, said: "The General Assembly, being the voice of the international community, must be given a greater say in

the selection of the UN secretary-general." India wants an end to the current practice of the Security Council recommending only one candidate on whom the UNGA votes for or against in a secret ballot. "The Security council should recommend more than one candidate to the Assembly for appointment of the new secretary-general," Bishoi told a panel looking into revitalising the UNGA on Tuesday. This procedure was adopted, Bishnoi said, in 1946 when a different world order existed and "it was desirable that the two cold-war adversaries agree on a common candidate before putting forward his name" to the UNGA. "The situation today is entirely different and this provision needs to be changed," he asserted. The UN Charter only says that the Security Council should

On the overall functioning of the UNGA, Bishnoi said it should transform itself "from being a customary meeting place to a place where transnational issues that impact each and every one of us are addressed swiftly and truly global solutions are prescribed". UNGA, he said, should have the prime role in development matters. Turning to another aspect of the relationship between the Security Council and the UNGA, Bishnoi criticised what he said was the Council's tendency to encroach on the areas of UNGA authority "through extremely wide and permissive interpretations of what constitutes a threat to international peace and security".

Ban was re-elected to a second five-year term that began in 2011 and concludes at the end of next year. With the election process for his successor scheduled for next year attention is turning to how it should be conducted and to possible candidates. Traditionally the secretarygeneral's post has rotated among four regions -- Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia -- and if this system is followed it would be the turn of a European to succeed Ban. A 1997 UNGA resolution that reaffirmed geographic rotation added gender equality as one of the criteria for electing UN's top official. Neither a woman nor an Eastern European has held the post. What to do When you are in Debt?

Tahir Malik

Question: Most of the times we have seen advertisements for furniture stores saying no interest and no payments for 12 months. What is the catch in these kinds of offers? Answer: This situation is very common now days. The catch is this that if you do not pay your balance before the end of the period you will be hit by 28 percent interest rate or even more. That is why we call this plan as “buy now and PAIN later”. These kinds of plans are good for the people who know that they would be able to pay off their balance before their end of the promotion period. Before making any decisions, take a look at your budget and determine how much of a furniture payment you can afford each month, in addition to your regular monthly

and seasonal expenses. Will your budget allow you to repay the loan before the interest-free period ends? If the answer is no, don't buy the item. If you are confident you can pay the loan in full, read the fine print and make sure you understand all the fees, key dates, terms and conditions before going ahead with the purchase. Secondly, do not get anybody to co-sign or guarantee your loan. As if you lack behind in making payments other person will also get suffered. Question: Many people would say that if I do not pay off my debts, creditors will go after my wife/husband. Is it true? Answer: I would say this is a very generalised statement. Any creditor will only go after your wife/husband if they have co-signed, guaranteed on any debt or if you have issued them a supplementary card. If none of these things are applicable to you then creditors do not have any right to get the debt repaid by your family. Question: When you know that you are going to file a consumer proposal or even bankruptcy. Is it a wise decision to transfer your property to somebody else? Answer: This advice is given very commonly in our com-

munity without knowing of outcome. I would like to inform all of our readers that in every province there are certain exemptions. Which means even if you want to file bankruptcy, you are entitled to keep a certain share of equity which is exempt. For example, if there is a house which has 4 owners you are allowed $48000 equity exemption in the Lower Mainland. Whereas you would be allowed $36000 exemptions if you live outside the lower mainland. But if you choose to do transfer of any asset knowingly for you are in debt, it would have serious implications in your case. Question: Negotiating with the collection companies for our debt and filing a consumer proposal what is the difference? Answer: First of all we have to understand that whenever we get behind in making regular monthly payments on our credit cards/loans, our credit does get affected. Secondly dealing with collection companies or filling a consumer proposal is your choice. I would give you some examples which will make you understand the difference between both of the procedures. Collection Companies: (i) You would have to make payment of whatever amount

you and the collection company agreed on right away in one installment. (ii)Getting proof that your account has been paid in full and collection company or original creditor does not have a right to collect any further amount from you is the toughest part. (iii) Even you do get a letter stating no further money is owed by you, It will still take 6 more years for your credit to show that you had a past due amount which was settled by a collection company. Consumer Proposal: (i) You will be awarded a maximum of 5 years to pay off your debt in easily interest free monthly installments. (ii) Once you complete your obligation of making payments you will get a certificate of full performance, stating you have paid off your proposal right away. (iii) On receiving a certificate of full performance your credit history will show consumer proposal for 3 more years and after that all past history will be deleted. Question: As spring break has been started what would you like to advise our kids? Answer: As a parent, you have a due diligence to make your kids understand the importance of credit and making monthly budgets. As per the proverb “As you sow, so shall you reap”. But if you do not make your kids under-

stand how the credit system works you have higher chances of your kids will not develop good credit and money managing skills. Almost all libraries have books on this topic which you can give it to your kids and make them prepare to start managing their credit and money life once they enter practical life. Question: If someone is in Debt, what sort of helps you can render to our readers? Answer: If someone is having financial difficulties in managing their finances and they do not see any ray of hope then relax and have a piece of mind. As per Canadian Law if someone is facing financial hardship they can file for a consumer proposal. I can help to reduce their debts up to 75 % and convert the remaining balance in easy interest free installments. All of Your Assets will be saved. No more collection calls and legal notices. If someone is not even able to afford monthly payments I can also help them to file for their bankruptcy. By contacting New Life Debt Solutions you will have your stress free life to an end. Punjab sets up bureau of investigation Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab government on Wednesday claimed that the state had become the first in the country to establish a Bureau of Investigation (BoI) bringing all investigation staff of different units under a unified command. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal launched the initia-

tive at the Punjab Police headquarters here on Wednesday. With the BoI, the investigation functions of the Punjab Police have been separated from law and order duties. Badal, flanked by Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini, said the new wing would be responsible for all investigation work --

from police station level to district level to the state headquarters. "Separate staff has been earmarked for investigations at all three levels," Badal told media persons, adding that the new wing would ensure professional and time-bound investigations. He said the staff of this spe-

Akali Dal to oppose land acquisition without farmers' consent Chandigarh (IANS): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday said it will oppose any move by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government which will seek to allow land acquisition without the consent of farmers or landowners. The Akali Dal, a partner in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, adopted a resolution in this regard during its core committee meet convened in the national capital Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Akali Dal president and Punjab deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, in the presence of the party's patron and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and other senior Akali Dal leaders.

It was called to formulate the party's response to the proposed bill on land acquisition due to come before parliament this week. "The meeting today cleared the party's stand on the proposed land acquisition bill and passed a resolution in which the SAD (Akali Dal) decided to oppose any land acquisition without the express consent of a majority of the farmers/landowners whose land is to be acquired," a party spokesman said. "The party also decided that the land should only be acquired for public purposes and the government should not get into acquisition for private entities," he added. The resolution also said that where land is

acquired, farmers should be given the option of accepting compensation at market rates, plus displacement allowance. The farmers should not be denied the right to approach the court for redress of grievances, it added. The Akali Dal and the BJP have been running an alliance government in Punjab since 2007. Sukhbir Singh Badal's wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal is the union food processing minister in the Narendra Modi government. Agrarian state Punjab contributes over 50 percent of foodgrains, wheat and paddy, to the national kitty despite having only 1.54 percent of the country's geographical area.

cialised wing will not be diverted for any other purpose. Badal said the BoI would initially have 7,772 personnel on its rolls. The BoI will be headed by a director, of additional Director General of Police rank. DGP Saini said the new investigation wing will get all facilities and technology to ensure

proper investigation. He said the wing would also be equipped with mobile forensic evidence collection units, regional FSLs (forensic science labs), modern cyber crime unit, and modern interview rooms as well as modern women police stations in all districts.

BSF recovers 10 kg heroin in Punjab

Chandigarh (IANS): Border Security Force (BSF) troopers recovered 10 kg of heroin along the India-Pakistan border in the Amritsar sector, a BSF spokesman said on Tuesday. He said that the heroin, in 10 packets, was found

near Border out Post (BoP) Tota in Amritsar sector, 280 km from here. The packets were buried in fields before the electrified fence along the border. The heroin recovered is valued at Rs.50 crore in the international market.

The packets were found following a tip-off about heroin being smuggled into India from Pakistan. With the latest seizure, the BSF has seized over 52 kg of heroin this year. The seizure of heroin in 2014 was 361 kg in the Punjab sector.

No horse race between Ajit Jain, Greg Abel: Buffett Washington (IANS): Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway chairman & CEO, said there's no horse race to run between Indiaborn top insurance executive Ajit Jain and Greg Abel, head of Berkshire's energy companies, as his possible successors. "There's no jockeying position at all" between front-runners Jain, 63, and Abel, 52, and neither of them knows who will be Berkshire Hathaway's next

CEO, Buffett said on CNBC on Monday. "The board has talked about it at every meeting for I don't know how many years. We have a precise plan in mind," the 84-yearold Buffett said. Jain and Abel, both longtime Berkshire Hathaway executives, were named as possible successors to Buffett in Vice Chairman Charlie Munger's annual letter to shareholders. "When Charlie's letter

came in, and he referenced Greg and Ajit, it was news to me that he was writing that. He's right, they're very, very, very good, each one of them," Buffett said. Nevertheless, Buffett said in his annual letter to shareholders, which was released on Saturday, that he and the board have already agreed on who would carry the torch once his time comes. "In certain important

respects, this person will do a better job than I am doing," Buffett said in his letter. Currently, Abel is the chairman, president and CEO of Iowa-based Berkshire Hathaway Energy, while Jain runs the company's reinsurance division. Born in India, Jain has worked for the company since 1986. Educated at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

and the Harvard Business School, Jain earlier worked for McKinsey & Co. and IBM. "Ajit insures risks that no one else has the desire or the capital to take on," Buffett wrote in Berkshire's annual report. "His operation combines capacity, speed, decisiveness and, most important, brains in a manner unique in the insurance business. Yet he never exposes Berkshire to risks that are

inappropriate in relation to our resources." In his letter, Munger described Abel and Jain as "proven performers who would probably be underdescribed as 'worldclass'". "'World-leading' would be the description I would choose," Munger said. "In some important ways, each is a better business executive than Buffett."

UKIP names Sikh shopkeeper as candidate for British polls

London (IANS): A Sikh man has been unveiled as the UK Independence Party's (UKIP) candidate for Hull North in the British county of Yorkshire in the upcoming general election, media reported Monday. Sergi Singh, a shopkeeper and the party's Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire

branch vice-president, stood unsuccessfully as a councillor for the Holderness ward in 2014. As the owner of Jackpot Wines in east Hull, Singh has been a prominent member of the small business community for several years. Now, Singh will contest

from the Hull North seat, which Labour Party's Diana Johnson has held since 2005, Hull Daily Mail reported. "I am not a career politician. I am just an ordinary person, but I don't think the people of North Hull are being listened to and I think they feel it is time for a change," he was quoted as saying. "I want to offer the people of Hull North a referendum on Europe and we are the only party committed to doing that. "Most of the MPs sitting in parliament don't know what it is like to work for a living or how to take the bus." Singh unveiled his personalised "battle bus" surrounded by about a dozen wannabe party councillors.

Bobby Jindal sees American 'melting point' turning into 'salad bowl' Washington (IANS): Insisting that he was tired of hyphenated Americans, Louisiana's IndianAmerican Republican Governor Bobby Jindal has accused the "politically correct crowd" of trying to turn the American "melting pot" into a "salad bowl". Jindal, who unlike other IndianAmerican politicians declines to embrace his ethnicity, dilated Friday on the need for new immigrants to adopt American culture and learn to speak English. "They must assimilate. They must integrate. We used to be the melting pot," he said addressing the Conservative Political Action

Conference at National Harbour in Maryland, near Washington. "Now, the politically correct crowd says we oughta be a salad bowl," he said. "There is nothing wrong with

saying if you want to come to America you should be an American," said Jindal, one of a long list of potential 2016 presidential hopefuls who addressed the conference. "I am tired of hyphenated Americans. We're not IndianAmericans or African-Americans, we're all Americans," he was quoted as saying by the Washington Post. He also upbraided fellow Republicans in Congress for failing to do enough to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law or stop his plan to delay deportations for some young

undocumented immigrants. "He has basically broken the Constitution. Broken the law," Jindal said of Obama. "It is time for our Republican leaders in congress to grow a spine. It's time for them to do what we elected them to do." Jindal, according to the Post, also criticised Obama for not doing enough to confront the Islamic State terrorist group with military force. He said he rejected the State Department's argument that America could not "kill our way to victory," and argued ground troops might be necessary to win

the fight. "How have we ever won any war...if not killing our way to victory?" Jindal asked. "We don't need to be cheaper liberal Democrats. We need to be principled conservatives," Jindal was quoted as saying by the Blaze. Decrying big government bureaucrats, he said: "They think we're not smart enough to buy our own insurance, they think we're not smart enough to buy guns, and if you live in New York City, they think we're not smart enough to buy a Big Gulp."

Indian woman's Italian 'not good enough' for citizenship Rome (IANS): An Indian national has been barred from completing the process towards gaining Italian citizenship by a mayor who argued that her language skills are not up to scratch, despite her living in the country for 15 years, a media report said Monday. Pushpa Rani, 56, was blocked from citizenship by the mayor of Cairate, in northern Italy, who stopped her from swearing the oath of allegiance by arguing that her Italian was not good enough, The Local news portal

reported. The oath was to be Pushpa Rani's last step towards gaining citizenship, after getting all the necessary approval from Italian authorities. Mayor Paolo Mazzucchelli, from the anti-immigration Northern League party, instead advised her to take a language course. An Indian citizen, Pushpa Rani has lived in Italy for 15 years and said she struggles with learning the country’s language. Stating that she has not

been allowed to take the oath of citizenship, she said: "Now I’ve spent two months in an Italian school, and my language skills are getting better. Pushpa Rani now has until Sunday to swear the

oath of allegiance, after which her citizenship application will be void. Her lawyer accused Mazzucchelli of failing to perform his official duties and said the case

would be taken to court if Pushpa Rani was not allowed to swear the oath imminently. Pushpa Rani’s husband Kuman, who is already an Italian citizen, said he wanted his and his wife’s “rights to be respected. But Mazzucchelli said that there was “no discrimination in his decision to block Pushpa Rani from citizenship, arguing that he performs weekly citizenship tests for people who speak Italian. “A person that swears

the oath to obtain Italian citizenship must know how to speak Italian. As foreseen in law, they must know how to read the constitution," Mazzucchelli said. “Pushpa Rani was still not ready. I, therefore, suggested, during a friendly meeting in which her daughter and son-in-law were present, to enroll in an Italian course. If she is ready to recite the phrase in Italian, there’s no opposition on my part, he added.

Jagmohan Dalmiya: Wily cricket administrator makes a comeback

Sharad Pawar threw his hat into the ring for the top post. As the election ended in a tie, Dalmiya gave his casting vote to ensure Mahendra's victory, prompting a dejected Pawar to remark that the entire process was unfair. "The umpire was the bowler," Pawar had quipped after his loss. Dalmiya then controlled the board by proxy for a year, with Mahendra being a mere puppet. But the Pawar camp fought back by using all means to checkmate Dalmiya at his own game in the 2005 election. Months later, the BCCI lodged a police complaint against Dalmiya for alleged misappropriation

the race. Keeping both the lobbies headed by Srinivasan and Pawar guessing his next moves, Dalmiya deftly exploited the hostility between the two to put himself up as an acceptable candidate. At the prime of his career, Dalmiya was known as a trouble shooter par excellence. His convincing powers were such that the joke used to be that he could sell a refrigerator to an [Inuit]. He now takes over the reins of the BCCI in challenging circumstances. The spot fixing scandal has taken some of the shine off the IPL. It will be Dalmiya's first challenge to clean up the game, while India's poor performance in several series away from home is also an issue that needs redressal. His critics say, Dalmiya's hands will be tied, as he is surrounded by office-bearers elected with Srinivasan's backing. However, those who have followed Dalmiya's style of functioning over the years, have no doubt he will be his own man.

turned out to be one of the most chequered and marathon innings in India's sports administration. Dalmiya became BCCI treasurer in 1983 - the year India won the World Cup - and later served as its secretary, before becoming ICC chief for three years in 1997. After continuing as International Cricket Council chief for three years, Dalmiya was elected BCCI president in 2001. He was all-in-all in the board till his tenure ended in 2004. Later that year, Dalmiya hoisted his acolyte Ranbir Singh Mahendra as BCCI president in a tantalizingly close election where then union minister

of funds related to the 1996 World Cup in which India was a co-host. As Dalmiya faced a police probe, the BCCI expelled him in December 2006, that also forced him to step down as CAB president, months after a nerve-wracking election which he had won by defeating the chief minister's nominee, city police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee. In mid-2007, Dalmiya was exonerated by the court, and he returned to head the CAB in 2008, by defeating then president Prasun Mukherjee. However, in the next few years, Dalmiya seemed only a shadow of his former self. He looked old, and his lack of full fitness was talked about in CAB circles. But the wily cricket administrator bided his time, and the short term as BCCI interim chief brought him back to centrestage, also displaying his wide acceptability in the board. This time around, Dalmiya seemed to have played his cards well, after the Supreme Court ran out Srinivasan from

oust Dalmiya from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). But Dalmiya held on to his position in the CAB against all odds, and silently started mending fences with his detractors in the board. The businessman and ace manipulator pulled off the first surprise when sidelined president Srinivasan pitchforked him to the post of BCCI interim chief in June 2013 after the spot-fixing scam emerged. That stint was small lasting only four months and Dalmiya's powers seemed grossly limited, but enough to announce to the cricketing world that he could not be written off. Born in a business family in 1940, Dalmiya was a club-level cricketer. He kept wickets for two teams - Jorabagan and Rajasthan - in the (then) Calcutta cricket league, and switched to cricket administration after hanging up his gloves. Mentored by then BCCI mandarin Biswanath Dutt, Dalmiya cut his teeth in CAB politics, beginning what has

Kolkata (IANS): At the peak of his career, cricket administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya's detractors rued that such was the man's resilience that he had it in him to swim back to the shore if thrown deep into the sea, or rise like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes. The 74-yearold's almost unbelievable comeback at the head of the country's premier cricket body has only reinforced the notion. After losing his almost vice-like control of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) midway into the last decade, the Kolkatabased businessman had to endure court cases, political pressure, corruption charges, arrest and even expulsion from the BCCI, as he seemed helpless and lonely in the face of sustained offensive by a formidable coalition of Sharad Pawar, I.S. Bindra, Shashank Manohar, A.C. Mutthiah, Lalit Modi and N. Srinivasan. Joining them was the then West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who used all his clout - both political and administrative - to

Limiting World Cup to 10 teams a backward step: Tendulkar Sydney (IANS): Former Indian batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday labelled the International Council Cricket (ICC)'s decision to restrict the World Cup to just 10 nations as "a backward step". The ICC announced in December that only 10 teams will compete in the 2019 World Cup, down from 14 in the 2011 and 2015 tournaments. ICC has been facing criticism for the decision, especially given the solid performances of Associate nations like Ireland and Afghanistan at the ongoing World Cup, reports cricket.com.au. Tendulkar, part of India's 2011 World Cup winning side, said cutting back the number of teams in the showpiece event would limit the globalisation of the game. He called on the ICC to expand the quadrennial event to as many as 25 teams. "(The ICC's decision) is slightly disappointing because as a cricketer I want the game to be globalised as much as possible and, according to me, this is a backward step," the former Indian captain said at a function here. "We've got to find ways of encouraging the lesser teams." Ireland's victory over the West Indies in Nelson last month was the most recent occasion an Associate nation has upset a Test playing side at a World Cup. The Irish produced a shock win over England at the 2011 World Cup and also beat Pakistan in 2007. Also, Kenya's victories over 1996 champions Sri Lanka in 2003 and the two-time Cup champions Windies in 1996 rank as some of the most memorable moments in World Cup history. Tendulkar said those results prove the Associate nations can match it with the full member teams and need more regular opportunities against the best teams in order to develop. He wants 'A' teams from leading cricket nations to schedule regular fixtures against Associate teams in between

Mary Kom flags off social awareness campaign New Delhi (IANS): Five-time World boxing champion M.C. Mary Kom on Monday flagged off a campaign here named 'Box Out' against social evils like sexual abuse and corruption. The vision behind this campaign which was initiated by sportswear brand Dida is to 'Box Out' the evils in the society and also to create awareness for major challenges like sexual abuse, eve teasing, acid attacks, corruption etc. Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom also unveiled the blogging page of the 'Box Out' campaign by registering herself as the first member of it. While addressing the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) students during the event, Mary Kom advised all of them to work on their fitness for at least 40 minutes in a day so as to stay fit and fight against the evils like eve teasing, sexual abuse etc. She also gave tips of self defence to the students. Mary Kom said: "I have donned my gloves this time for the cause of humanity to box out the evils plaguing the society. I appreciate the 'Box Out' campaign initiated by Dida Sportswear and I am sure our campaign will help us in creating awareness in the society to fight against these evils."

World Cups. "The lesser teams have, in each and every World Cup, they always surprise top teams. And they can do it on a consistent basis only if they're given a fair platform to express their talent," Tendulkar was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia (CA) website. "Right now, they get up after four years on the cricket world's biggest platform and they're expected to play and compete with the likes of Australia, South Africa, India, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, so many top sides. It's unfair to them," he added. "Why not get Australia A, England A, New Zealand A, South Africa A, New Zealand A, India A, everyone, to go and visit these countries and play them on a regular basis. And see, not just 14 teams, but how can we get to 25 teams participating in the next World Cup?"

Tendulkar pointed out that the World Cup expansion is vital to the development of the game in countries where cricket is not a major sport.

"It is not just about the top six or seven sides. If we are to globalise this game we have to get more and more people excited about cricket and the fan following only follows the result," Tendulkar said. "If the results are good then you have more fans. So it's important that they play good cricket consistently for a longer period, not just one good performance and then suddenly they go underground for four years and then turn up if they do well in those qualifying rounds," the 41year-old added. "So I would say it's something the ICC needs to look into and I hope they look into it." Tendulkar is the only player to have scored one hundred international centuries. He is also holds the record for most number of runs in both One-Day International (ODI) and Test cricket.

Much needed win for us: Misbah

Napier (IANS): Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq said that Wednesday's 129-run win over the

United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a World Cup Pool B encounter at the McLean Park here was

much needed. "That's a much needed win for us and obviously we won by a big margin. So, now we can just relax a little bit on the net runrate also," said Misbah at the post-match ceremony. Put in to bat, Pakistan posted a massive total of 339 for six, courtesy of knocks from opener Ahmed Shehzad (93), Haris Sohail (70) and Misbah (65). In reply, UAE ended at 210 for eight from their quota of 50 overs. Misbah added that their next match against South Africa on March 29 in Auckland would be of prime importance. "The next game is a very important for us and we need to focus on that," concluded the 40-yearold.

England not playing with fear: Stuart Broad Sydney (IANS): Hitting out at former captain Michael Vaughan, who had said England are “playing with fear, fast bowler Stuart Broad has denied the allegation. "I don't think we are playing with fear, we just haven't clicked the way we'd have liked," Broad was quoted as saying by BBC. England have lost three of their four World Cup Pool A matches and face Bangladesh in a must-win game on Monday. "When you are outside the group, looking from afar, it's very easy to pick on loads of different things but actually the group are in a really good place. We just haven't performed when we need to in the middle," said Broad. England’s only win in the

tournament came against minnows Scotland while all the others have been heavy defeats at the hands of Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. After the game against Bangladesh, England play their last Pool A match

against Afghanistan on March 13 at the Sydney Cricket Ground here. "We need to win two games and we are in the quarter-finals of the World Cup," added Broad, who has picked up only two wickets in four games.

I'm in better shape: Usain Bolt Kingston (Jamaica) (IANS): Despite losing a sprint to the finish, athletics legend Usain Bolt said he is in better shape than he was last year when injury forced him to miss most of the season. The Jamaican sensation was unable to catch up with Tyquendo Tracey while anchoring an exciting 4x100 metres finish against University of

Technology (UTECH) at the 39th staging of the Gibson/McCook Relays over the weekend, reports CMC. Bolt, however, conceded that he needs to get a lot more done if he has to perform to his usual standards this season. "I am getting there. I am not perfect yet. I am in better shape than last season but I need a lot more work. My coach will now

decide what else I need to focus on," said Bolt. Bolt received the baton behind Tracey and despite making up significant ground, failed to overhaul his rival. However, he said that he has identified his weak areas as he prepares to defend his titles at the Beijing World Championships. "I was happy with the result.

It's always good to get back to the track to get some work in to see what it takes to get back on track, said Bolt. “You always try to win every race but what I got from it is that I need more leg power. I will just keep working hard, continue working like I always do and bounce back and show the world that for me it's never over.

Salman Khan illegal arms case: Verdict deferred further THE verdict in the case relating to illegal possession and use of arms by actor Salman Khan has been deferred further as the court in Jodhpur on Tuesday partly accepted nine-year-old applications of the prosecution. The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Anupama Bijlani also gave a last opportunity to

the prosecution to produce the witnesses and records relating to the case. "The court also ordered the prosecution to call four witnesses on March 10 as a last chance," Salman Khan's counsel Hastimal Saraswat said. The court made it clear that no further chance would be

given to the prosecution to produce witnesses. Salman Khan and a few other Bollywood stars were accused of poaching blackbucks on the midnight of October 1-2, 1998 during the shooting of Hindi movie "Hum Saath Saath Hain". Two blackbucks, a protected animal under the Wildlife

Protection Act, were killed on the outskirts of Kankani village near Jodhpur. Salman Khan is also alleged to have been carrying arms with expired license. A police complaint was filed against him for being involved in hunting protected blackbucks. (IANS)

'Dream Girl' highlights small-towner's starry dreams “DREAM Girl - Ek Ladki Deewani Si", Indian telly's new offering, puts the spotlight on the life of a small town girl who wishes to attain stardom by hook or by crook against all odds. Nikita Dutta, who plays the protagonist, says it doesn't zoom into the negativity in showbiz. Nikita, along with her costar Mohsin Khan, was in the capital on Tuesday to promote the forthcoming TV show which will go on air on Life OK on March 9. Last seen in the 2014 film "Lekar Hum Deewana Dil", Nikita is making her small screen debut with the show. She'll play Lakshmi, who harbours dreams of becoming a superstar. "Lakshmi belongs to

Jodhpur. Being a small town girl, she grows up with a dream to become a superstar. But she is not a typical 'naari' (woman). She's a quirky and 'jugaadu' (streetsmart) girl. She idolises Ayesha Sareen (fictional star), a big name of the industry. So, her aim in life is to become like Ayesha," Nikita told IANS of her role. Although the story of the show seems similar to popular soap opera "Madhubala - Ek Ishq Ek Junoon" and Priyanka Chopra-starrer "Fashion", Nikita believes that it does not focus much on the negativity in the entertainment industry. "The show has a very colourful side to the struggle. We haven't tried to

highlight too many negativities of the cinema world. It's a little difficult to showcase the cinema life to viewers. "People who are working in the industry and those who do not, all have different perceptions. But we have tried to focus on both the worlds (positive and negative)," she added. "Nisha Aur Uske Cousins" fame actor Mohsin will be seen playing the "sweet and charming" role of Samar Sareen in the show. Talking about his character, he said: "Samar is a lovable, sweet and charming family oriented person. He is too similar to my off screen image. Although Samar can attain stardom easily, he doesn't want to

do so. He wants to become an actor through hardwork." Actress Shraddha Arya -best known for her role in the soap opera "Tumhari Pakhi" -- will be seen portraying the role of yesteryear superstar-turnedentrepreneur Ayesha. Apart from the trio, "Dream Girl Ek Ladki Deewani Si", produced by Shashi-Sumeet Mittal productions, will also star Khalid Siddiqui, Rukhsar Rehman and Ayaz Khan. Touted as both a "family oriented" and "youth based" show, "Dream Girl Ek Ladki Deewani Si", aims to entertain audiences of all "age groups" with the inspirational tale which will have Bollywood as its backdrop. 'Mardaani' Rani to receive award for highlighting women's safety entire family, since human trafficking is an issue that every man,

woman and child should be aware of and this awareness is our best tool

in this fight," she said, addressing the message to Rani. (IANS)

YAHAAN HINDI film actress Rani Mukerji is being honoured with an award for her endeavour to highlight the cause of the safety, security and protection of the girl child and women in Pradeep Sarkar's "Mardaani". A panel of jurists and experts have selected Rani for the 'National Award for the Best Representation of the Cause of Safety, Security and Protection of Women and Girl Child' by the Institute for Gender Justice. Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, chairperson of the organisation, said: "The representation of women in the media,

both print and electronic, has been, if not to say much, targeted at commodification of women. This has had a dire consequence on the status of women which is reflected in the perpetual crime against women in the society. "This award is an endeavour to recognise those agents who want to represent women and girl child in a better light and not commodify them. This award is a result of our endeavour to encourage stake holders and functionaries." According to Chaudhary, Rani "epitomised the spirit of the countless involved in the

long fight against human trafficking" in her role as Shivani Shivaji Roy in "Mardaani". "That for you to be associated with a movie addressing such an important and urgent cause attracts the attention of the viewing public and focuses their attention on this pertinent issue. "The role so naturally played by you of an empowered and courageous police officer has given the correct message, and the promotional clip that aired on the TV channels to promote the movie also correctly urged people to watch the movie with their

Standard towing rating for the adventure-ready Pathfinder Hybrid is 1,580 kilos / 3,500 pounds (when properly equipped). 100,000 scholarships to students to prevent school dropout New Delhi (IANS): The government awards 100,000 scholarships to selected meritorious students of Class 9 from economically weaker sections in order to prevent them from dropping out of school, the human resource development ministry said on Wednesday. The Department of School Education and Literacy is administering a centrallysponsored National Meanscum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, under which scholarships are given to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to arrest their dropout at Class 8 and encourage them to continue their studies. The scholarship is given to students whose parental income is not more than Rs.1.5 lakh per year. The state reservation policy is being followed. Under another central scholarship scheme for college and university students, financial assistance is provided to meritorious students from low income families to meet a part of their day-to-day expenses while pursuing higher studies. The scholarship is provided to students whose parental income should not

exceed Rs.6 lakh per annum. The scheme is for students of the general and reserved category students, an official statement said. Under another scheme, special scholarships are awarded to students of Jammu and Kashmir for pursuing higher studies after passing out of school. The scholarship scheme is to provide tuition fees, hostel fees, cost of books and other incidental charges to students from Jammu and Kashmir who, after passing Class 12 are pursuing general degree courses, engineering and medical studies in governm e n t colleges/institutes/other non-government institutes located outside the state. The scholarship is for students whose parental income is not more than Rs.6 lakh per year. The scheme is for students of both general and reserved category. Under the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), 4,000 scholarships are available per year to be given to girls admitted to AICTE-approved institutions or programmes of Diploma and

Undergraduate Degree level. Only one girl child per family whose parental income is less than Rs.6 lakh per year can avail the scholarship. Under a scheme for differently abled students, eligible differently abled students having parental income of less than Rs.6 lakh per year and who are already admitted to technical programmes/courses in AICTE approved Institutions during 2014-15 are eligible under the scheme, the statement said. Special scholarships are provided to students of the northeastern region, under a scheme called Ishan Uday, under the University Grants Commission (UGC). Under the Ishan Uday scholarship scheme, it is aimed to provide 10,000 scholarships every year from the academic year 2014-15. The income of parents of the students should not exceed Rs.4.5 lakh per annum. The information was given by Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question.

Winning an Oscar is my dream: Darshan Kumar ACTOR Darshan Kumar, who played Priyanka Chopra's husband in "Mary Kom", will now be seen in "NH10". He hopes to win an Academy Award for his acting talent someday. "As an actor I want to win all the awards. Winning an Oscar is my dream," Darshan told IANS.

Alas, the actor did not bag any award for his debut venture "Mary Kom". "I was nominated for 'Mary Kom', but I did not get an award. I failed to impress the jury with my debut film but, hope to impress them with 'NH10'. "Naseeruddin Shah loved my performance

in 'Mary Kom', and as an actor, getting appreciated by him is very satisfying," he added. He says "NH10" is an "unusual film and my role is very different". "I'm extremely happy to be a part of this project," added Darshan, whose character in "NH10" will reportedly have shades of grey. He will be seen

playing the love interest of Anushka Sharma. Directed by Navdeep Singh, "NH10" is a thriller which is co-produced by Phantom Productions and Eros International. This movie marks Anushka's debut as a film producer. (IANS)

Jewellery a 'heavy duty' act for actress Alka Kaushal HER role as a disciplined Marwari woman named Parvati Gadodia in Colors' latest show "Swaragini" requires Alka Kaushal to wear heavy jewellery, but the actress says it's hard to manage the accessories for long durations. Parvati is seen wearing maang tika, heavy earrings, bangles and neckpieces in the show, and the actress says that she hardly wears such accessories in real life. "It's difficult to wear them for 13 to 14 hours a day while shooting. I don't even get so decked up for weddings,” she told IANS when asked how it feels to be decked up all the time in such shows. Her character in the series, that talks about cultural conflicts between a Marwari and Bengali family, is a strong, rooted woman and has a clear differentiation of right and wrong with her own set of guidelines. The Gadodia family is traditional and believes in customs and rituals. They are pure vegetarians and cannot stand the stench or sight of meat. Parvati hates the Bengalis next door. She is bitter and does not leave any stone unturned to look down upon them. When asked what made her join this show, she told IANS: “I have

'Yeh Rishta Kya ...' 10-year leap delayed AN impending 10-year leap in the story of TV show "Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai" has been delayed as the show's producers are yet to find a fresh face for the character Naksh. According to a source, the show had to postpone the planned 10-year leap to make time to zero in on apt casting for Naksh, the 20-year-old son of Naitik (Karan Mehra) and Akshara (Hina Khan). The production house of the longest running show on Star Plus is facing difficulty in zeroing in on the fresh face as they want someone to maintain the good looks, naughty character played by the young Naksh. The team has auditioned over 200 boys to find the right person to play the character but haven't zeroed in on any. Post the leap, Akshara will shed her sari clad avatar for Indo-western clothes. Audiences will have to wait for a while to see the new track post the leap and the direction in which the story of the show is headed. Portions of the show, post-leap, will be shot in Cape Town, South Africa and the locations are also said to have been finalised. (IANS)

India flags concerns over cross-border terror, 26/11 trial with Pakistan Islamabad (IANS): India on Tuesday flagged its concerns over cross-border terrorism and the slow-moving Mumbai terror attack trial to Pakistan as Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar met his Pakistani counterpart here. In talks that Jaishankar said were "held in a constructive and positive atmosphere", both countries agreed that maintaining peace and tranquillity on the border was vital. The meeting between Jaishankar and his Pakistan counterpart Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhary comes seven months

after India called off the foreign secretary-level talks over the Pakistani envoy in New Delhi hobnobbing with Kashmiri separatists, ignoring India's objections. Jaishankar, who arrived here earlier on Tuesday, called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the evening. He also met Sartaz Aziz, advisor on national security and foreign affairs, and Tariq Fatemi, special assistant to Sharif. Jaishankar, here as part of a SAARC Yatra initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held talks with Chaudhary after landing here in the morn-

ing from Dhaka. Both sides discussed bilateral issues and agreed to work together to find common ground and narrow their differences. Jaishankar said that he reiterated India's "known concerns on cross-border terrorism, including on the Mumbai case". India has consistently conveyed its concerns to Pakistan over the delay in the trial of the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. After talks with Chaudhary, the Indian foreign secretary said in reply to a question that he was glad to be in

Islamabad as part of Modi's SAARC initiative. He said he "conveyed the expectations of our leadership on SAARC and their determination to forge a cooperative relationship with all our neighbours". He said India and Pakistan "discussed ideas and initiatives to take SAARC forward. "Pakistan will be the next SAARC chair, and India would like to work with Pakistan to help SAARC achieve its potential. "Naturally, my visit provided an opportunity to discuss our bilateral relations.

"We engaged on each other's concerns and interests in an open manner. We agreed to work together to find common ground and narrow differences," said Jaishankar. Chaudhary, addressing the media separately, said both countries agreed to work together and find common grounds to narrow differences, but added that his talks with Jaishankar "did not mark resumption of bilateral talks". Chaudhary said: "We agreed to reduce the prevailing tension along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working Boundary that has claimed scores

of lives on both sides of the border." He said issues ranging from "India's interference in Balochistan", the Samjhauta Express bombing case, and the LoC ceasefire violations were brought to India's attention. He said the overall tone of the meeting was "positive" and that both countries were ready to reflect on matters of importance to them. Jaishankar is on a fournation South Asian trip. After visiting Bhutan and Bangladesh, he reached Pakistan on Tuesday. His next stop was Afghanistan.

Pakistani court summons federal, district magistrates over Lakhvi Islamabad (IANS): The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday sent notice to the federal and district magistrates seeking their replies on the detention order of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, an alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack. During Monday's hearing, Lakhvi's counsel Advocate Rizwan Abbasi

contended that it was the third time his client had been issued with the detention orders, Dawn reported. The court sought replies from the district and federal magistrates and adjourned the hearing to March 5. Lakhvi, who was granted bail by an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad in

December last year, has been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail. Last year on December 18, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) had granted postarrest bail to Lakhvi. The bail decision triggered a furious response from New Delhi and Pakistani prosecutors had swiftly

announced they would appeal against it. On the same day, the federal government ordered his detention under the MPO. When the IHC suspended the detention order on December 29, 2014, Lakhvi was rearrested in an over six-and-a-half-year-old kidnapping case. Lakhvi is among the

seven people charged with planning and helping carry out the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The six other men facing trial in Adiala Jail for their alleged involvement in the 26/11 attacks are Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Younas Anjum, Jamil Ahmed, Mazhar Iqbal and Abdul Majid. At the time of the attacks,

Lakhvi was believed to be the operational head of the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) that has been accused by India of carrying out the attacks in India's financial capital. Lakhvi, along with Zarar Shah, was allegedly the key planner of the attack that killed more than 160 people.

Terror attack planned for Pakistan Day foiled: Police Islamabad (IANS): Police Sunday said they have foiled a terrorist attack that aimed to the strike the Pakistan Day parade on March 23, media reports said. Police sources said that two suspected terrorists were arrested during recent raids and confessed to planning an attack, Dawn News reported. They said the men were arrested from Ghouri Town here in connection with the attack on the

Q a s a r - e - S a k i n a Imambargah which occurred on February 19. Sources said the arrested men confessed to planning an attack during their interrogation. A large cache of weapons was also seized from their possession. Earlier in February, it was announced that a joint military parade of Pakistan's armed forces would take place on Pakistan Day after a gap of seven years. The decision to resume

the military parade appeared to be a manifestation of the military's show of strength in the wake of the Pakistani Taliban attack on the Army Public School (APS) in Peshawar last year, which killed more than 140 children and school staff members. The last military parade took place on March 23, 2008 during the tenure of Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf as a civilian president.

Militancy has damaged Kashmir: Pakistani daily Islamabad (IANS): Asking India and Pakistan to revisit the fundamentals of their Kashmir policies, a Pakistani newspaper said Sunday that militancy had caused huge damage to Jammu and Kashmir. The Dawn said in an editorial that Pakistan had to recognise that its core policy - right to selfdetermination for Kashmiris - had been distorted for too long and in too many ways. This happened because of the "armed

jihad that was unleashed in the region with - no matter what the officially stated position is - the active collaboration and sponsorship of the Pakistani state. "The rights of all Kashmiris were never going to be won through violence, and a policy of militants and proxies has caused incalculable damage to Pakistan's position on Kashmir, the Kashmir region and Pakistan too." It said the new coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir between

the BJP and the PDP, which hold vastly differing views on the region, was "more startling than it is necessarily cause for hope". It added: "In this hour of unexpected hope, now may just be the time for India and Pakistan to revisit the fundamentals of their Kashmir policies." The Narendra Modi government, it said, "may be forced to recognise the deep, open wounds the politics of communalism and exclusivity ... have created".

Pakistan PM wants civilian awards for December 16 victims Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has advised President Mamnoon Hussain to confer Sitarae-Shujaat (Posthumous) and Tamgha-e-Shujaat (Posthumous) to the victims of the Army Public School attack in Peshawar. The victims, who will receive two of the highest civilian awards, include teachers, students and staff members of the army-run school who were killed on December 16, 2014, Duniya TV

reported. On December 16, the Te h r e e k - e - Ta l i b a n Pakistan (TTP) launched a brutal attack on the school targeting count-

less students of the institution. More than 140 children and school staff lost their lives. The incident not only shook the students of the institution and their families but also the rest of the country. Following the Peshawar attack, the country's political leadership approved a comprehensive plan of action against terrorism in a move described by the prime minister as a "defining moment" in the fight against terrorism.

Pakistan military reviews security situation Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan's top military leadership reviewed the prevailing internal and external security situation of the country including progress of the ongoing operation Zarb-e-Azb. The review was undertaken at the 180th Corps C o m m a n d e r s ' Conference, held at General Headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Tuesday, with Army chief Gen. Raheel Sharif chairing the deliberations that dwelt at length on various pro-

fessional matters, Geo News reported. The participants also undertook a comprehensive review of operational preparedness besides prevalent internal and external security situation of the country including progress of ongoing operation. The Pakistan Army launched a major offensive against terrorists in the troubled northwestern tribal areas of the country bordering Afghanistan following a brazen militant attack at

Karachi airport last year. The military later intensified its operations against the militants of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) after a deadly attack on Army Public School in Peshawar on December 16, 2014. The government also formulated an emergency National Action Plan (NAP) including formation of military courts to hear terrorism-related cases following the militant attacks.

Shooting in India helps me connect with my roots: Dev Patel HIS brief visits to India for shooting his international movies help British actor of Indian descent Dev Patel connect to the "astounding" and "inspiring" country as well as revisit his cultural roots. "It is a wonderful way to get in touch with your culture and with your roots. I'm constantly astounded whenever I go to India. I feel so inspired by the people I interact with and with the things that I see," Dev, who sprang to global stardom with the Oscar winning "Slumdog Millionaire", told IANS over phone from Berlin. "I really hope I can continue to do that all my life," said the Gujarati lad, adding that he finds Indian food "great".

Just a cursory glance on the work done by Dev -- be it a Mumbai slum dweller in "Slumdog Millionaire", Neal Sampat of TV series "The Newsroom" or a manager of a

hotel in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" -- shows that despite spending his growing up days in Britain, the actor has traced the journey of an Indian man in most of his films. Another movie, "The Man Who Knew Infinity", a biopic on Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, brought Dev to India. The 24-year-old actor says entering the world of complex mathematics was not easy for him. "I spent a lot of time in southern India and did a lot of rehearsal with the director (Matthew Brown). A mathematician introduced us to the world of complex mathematics (on the set), and I'd be lying if I said I learned it, as it is so com-

plex, that it went over my head." Now, Dev is gearing up for his movie "Chappie", set to release in India on March 13. For "Chappie", Dev teamed up with Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver, while he shared screen space with Hollywood legends like Richard Gere and Judi Dench in "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", which also brought him to shoot in India. Asked about Bollywood legends, Dev was quick to share his long list of favourites. "There are a couple. I would start with Shah Rukh Khan. He is my absolute favourite. And then...I have already worked with him but I would die to

Ranvir Shorey did 'Blue Mountains' for son Haroon DIRECTOR Suman Ganguly says Ranvir Shorey, who plays a prominent part in "Blue Mountains", agreed to the movie for his son Haroon. Ranvir married his longtime ladylove Bollywood actress Konkana Sen Sharma in 2010 and Haroon was born the same year. "When I narrated the script to Ranvir, he got very emotional and told me, 'Suman-da, I will do this film for my son Haroon and for the dreams he will have and fully support him in pursuing them," Suman told IANS. "Ranvir has elevated the whole presence of the film to a different level. His precision and detailing

shaped 'Blue Mountains'," he added. "Blue Mountains" deals with issues that are relevant and very crucial for today's adolescents and their parents. It also highlights the importance of developing emotional stamina during the teenage years and emphasises on parenting styles

work with him again -- Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin, these are my top favourites," the actor said. The silver screen has literally captured the transformation in Dev from being a lanky teenager to a young man with a scruffy and rugged look, which is garnering a lot of attention. The actor says his "new look is for a movie". Dev had also mentioned that when he started his career in showbiz with British TV show "Skins", he was not sure where he was getting into. Now after seven years in the glamorous industry with a number of critically appreciated films to his credit, Dev is not in a mood to let success get to his head.

Jackie Shroff would 'love' to work with son Tiger

and family values. Talking about the film, Ganguly said: "My film deals with the life of a teenager and how a mother forces her own aspirations on her son which emotionally breaks him." Ranvir plays the protagonist's father, who helps his son regain confidence. The first look of the film has already released in Cannes. Now "Blue Mountains" is expected to tour some international film festivals before being released in India during summer. The film also features Gracy Singh, Rajpal Yadav, Arif Zakaria and Mahesh Thakur. (IANS)

ACTOR Jackie Shroff says he has been inundated with queries about when he'll share the frame with his talented son Tiger. He says it will happen when the "right script" comes their way. "As a father I am really proud of my son. He's doing really well. People have been coming up to us and asking, 'When would we be seen sharing the screen?', but it all depends on the script and if we come across a good one then I'd love

to work with him," said Jackie. Jackie, who was last seen in Farah Khan's "Happy New Year", is now caught up promoting the forthcoming "Dirty Politics", directed by K.C. Bokadia. "I'm playing a powerful man in the film. As the title says, the film is all about politics. I hope the audience enjoys watching the movie as much as we enjoyed making it," he said. "Dirty Politics" also features Mallika Sherwat and veteran actor Om Puri. (IANS)

Canadian auto sales climbed 3.4 per cent in February

Canadian auto buyers were undeterred by the cold weather felt in many provinces last month, helping automakers mark the best February sales since 2008. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants says Canadians snapped up 109,248 vehicles in February, up by 3.4 per cent from

105,865 in February 2014. Trucks continued to grab more market share, with sales up more than five per cent to 68,049, while sales of passenger cars inched up 0.2 per cent to 41,199. DesRosiers says light trucks now make up a record-high 63.3 per cent of the Canadian auto

market, based on year-to-date sales figures. General Motors’ Canadian arm sold 13,806 vehicles in February, an increase of more than six per cent from the previous year. Ford Canada saw its sales slip 7.4 per cent to 15,021, while FCA Canada saw a one per cent gain to 18,711.

“Given the coldest February on record for both Quebec and Ontario, the collapse in crude prices, and a declining Canadian dollar, it is a definite positive that Canadian consumers haven’t been steered away from the new vehicle market,” analyst Dennis DesRosiers said in a statement. Toyota’s sales advanced nearly

20 per cent from a year ago to 11,864, while Honda’s sales slipped eight per cent to 7,200. Scotiabank analyst Carlos Gomes noted that pickup trucks fared particularly well, with sales advancing 13 per cent year-overyear, led by a 44 per cent increase at General Motors.

The Niro is said to be equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-litre ‘Gamma’ four-cylinder engine with 160 hp mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The internal combustion engine only serves the front wheels, while an electric hybrid system can engage the rear wheels with up to 45 hp on tap. Joining Niro was an updated Optima Hybrid, sporting new front and rear fascias for increased aero performance, new wheels, and hybrid-only grille and lighting designs. Underneath it all, the Optima Hybrid is essentially the same car as the 2013 model, delivering 199 combined hp. However,

enhancements made to the gasoline-powered Optima carry over to the hybrid model as Kia aims to be “more upscale” and offer additional “high-tech amenities”. But, the real news is something we’ve known for quite some time. The Kia Soul EV will be arriving in the second half of this year in Canada. The electrified compact SUV will receive a 27kWh battery pack sending power to a 81.4 kW/109 hp

electric motor with 210 lb-ft of torque. Kia expects the Soul EV to achieve a range somewhere between 130 and 160 kms. When launched in 2014, the all-new Soul was lauded for its premium interior and significantly reduced levels of NVH. The Soul EV will be instantly recognizable for these same qualities. Like its gasolinepowered sibling, a circular theme pervades the cabin and is a pleasing contrast to the

exterior’s angular good looks. Inside, the Soul EV sets itself further apart from its gasolinepowered sibling with bright white accent trim on the center console, instrument panel and door panels, lending a light and modern feel to the passenger space. Distinguished by Kia’s most extensive use of biobased materials, the Soul EV has received UL’s first ever automotive environmental claim validation for its 10.9 lbs.

of bio-based organic content in interior plastic. Front and center is the use of BTX-free paint on the audio system surround, vent bezel and the floor console. Bio-based plastics derived from cellulose and sugar cane are found in many places within the cabin, including the door panels, headliner, seat trim, roof pillars and carpeting. In all, organic, bio-based materials are used in 19 different interior parts, making the Soul EV an electric-vehicle segment leader in eco-friendly material application. Separate from the bio-based content validation, extensive use of antibacterial materials also help to keep the cabin clean and are found on the gear selector, audio and HVAC controls, instrument panel switchgear and the floor-mounted center console. Combined, ecofriendly materials are used in 23 different interior parts, making the Soul EV an electric-vehicle segment leader in eco-friendly material application.

There’s still a big demand for the Scimitars Back in the heart of the Great Depression, Tom Williams designed and built a three-wheeled car for the Raleigh Cycle Company. Despite being a success, with sales of more than 1,000 units from 1933-1936, Raleigh decided to opt out of car manufacturing and Williams was made redundant.

But he didn’t give up on his threewheel dream. With a modest loan, he formed Reliant Engineering and built a small three-wheel van that used an Austin Seven engine. When Britain’s postwar motor industry concentrated on building vehicles for export, Reliant collaborated with a company in Israel called Autocars.

The business relationship was good in the beginning and soon Autocars asked Reliant to build a sports car, which they called the “Sabra” in homage to a cactus found in Israel. But the relationship with Autocars did not last and Reliant decided to market the Sabra in the United Kingdom, changing the

name to the “Sabre.” During development working with the Ogle Design Company, it was discovered that the Ogle 2+2 Coupe body would fit on the Sabre chassis. This package became the Scimitar SE4 GT Coupe. Soon after, Reliant and Ogle were approached by Triplex, the glass company, to build a car that

would demonstrate the use of laminated and heated glass. Thus was born the Triplex Ogle “sports wagon,” a modified Scimitar Coupe. The Duke of Edinburgh was so impressed with the design that he replaced his 3.0-litre Lagonda with one, and used it for two years. .

2015 Tiguan Comfortline 4Motion. Compact SUV has much to offer. The compact 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV is a rather good, modern, contemporary vehicle and ups the ante with higher quality, sophistication and refinement in this sector. Our tester was a very nice 2015 Tiguan Comfortline 4MOTION model Titan Beige metallic with a Titan Black leatherette interior and Sixspeed auto transmission. Base price for our tester was $34,700 and came equipped with the Option Technology package; ($2,075) Appearance package, ($1,740) Total came to options $3,825 for an as tested price of $38,525. (Freight and PDI $1,610 Excise AC tax $100). The Appearance package includes 18 inch alloy wheel and silver roof rails, while the Comfortline adds privacy glass, panoramic power sunroof, heated seats and washer nozzles, six-CD/MP3 stereo, Sirius

satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, power reclining driver’s seat, heated “leatherette” comfort seats, and leatherwrapped multifunction wheel. 4Motion all-wheel drive models

have leatherette upholstery. One high point is the Tiguan’s cabin which features higher quality and soft touch surfaces; that are better quality than most of its competitors. What buyers do get is sleek Euro design and cabin ambience. The Comfortline adds metallic accents to Climatronic dual zone climate control to the interior and a rear view camera. Controls are large and well placed and ergonomics superb. Firm, well-shaped seats are comfortable -interior room is good and the 60/40-split-folding rear seat has a cargo passthrough in the middle. The rear seat also slides fore and aft to improve either rear legroom or cargo space and the backrest

also reclines. The rear seat pass-through is a good idea and still allows four riders and longer items to be carried inside together. Also cool, is the fold-flat front passenger seat that enables a longer item (up to 2.5 metres in length) to be carried inside the Tiguan with the tailgate closed. Passengers liked the power panoramic moonroof which adds a light and airy feel to the cabin. The easy to master controls, touch screen and the eight-speaker Fender sound system from the optional Technology package are also delightful features. The only downside is the Tiguan’s smallish 23.8 cubic feet of cargo space. With the secondrow seat folded down, maxi-

mum capacity doubles to 56.1 cubic feet, still less than its rivals. The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder engine producing 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard while all-wheel drive is optional. Transmission is either a sixspeed manual or a six-speed automatic. Fuel consumption ranges from City: 11.4 L/100 km to Highway: 8.3 L/100 km depending on whether it is front wheel or all-wheel drive.Standard safety equipment on the Tiguan includes antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags and more. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a willing unit with plenty of mid- range torque. On a variety of roads the Tiguan feels safe, controlled and at ease in whatever you throw at it. A light well assisted steering set up makes for easy parking and low speed manoeuvres while braking is smooth and progressive. There are a lot of good competitors in this sector, but the Tiguan has the edge in term of cabin design and European refinement and is a recommended buy. By Autorevieman. 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan Comfortline 4MOTION - priced from $34,700 Plus options, freight AC Excise tax and PDI.
