Bollywood in shock as Salman Khan gets five years in jail for 2002 fatal hit-and-run MUMBAI (IANS): Bollywood was in shock on Wednesday after superstar Salman Khan was sentenced to five years in jail for a 2002 hit-and-run that killed a man sleeping on a footpath and injured four others here. As the actor was to be taken to prison, the Bombay High Court gave him a two-day respite in the form of interim bail. The 49-year-old Salman -heartthrob of millions -- was in tears as Additional Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande, who found him guilty on all the charges, pronounced the sentence in a packed courtroom, nearly 13 years after the tragic death in the suburb of Bandra. Salman's sisters, Alvira and Arpita, tried to console him although they themselves were crying. One of the highest paid actors in Bollywood, Salman was sentenced for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and driving without licence. He was also held guilty of rash and negligent driving - for ramming his Land Cruiser into the American Express Bakery after running over the victim, Nurullah Mahboob Sharif, in September 2002. The others injured in the accident were Munna Malai Khan, Kalim M. Pathan, Abdullah Rauf Sheikh and Muslim Shaikh. "All the charges have been proved

against you... What do you have to say?” Judge Deshpande asked Salman who was in the dock. “I hold that you were driving the vehicle. You were intoxicated. I also do not agree with your plea that the person who had died had received fatal injuries after a crane dropped the car on the persons underneath while removing it,” the judge added. He rejected defence lawyer Shrikant Shivade's contentions that the actor’s driver Ashok Singh was at the wheel when the accident took place, and owned up responsibility belatedly. Salman, attired in a white shirt and light blue denim jeans, however, insisted that he was not driving the car. "But I respect your decision and accept it. My lawyer will speak on my

behalf.” In the high court, senior Supreme Court counsel Harish Salve cited medical reasons for seeking bail and also argued that no one can be arrested on the basis of a summarised court order. Although his lawyers spoke about his poor health, Salman was shooting in Kashmir for "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", one of the much-anticipated films this year. The other is "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo". The total cost of the two films would be around Rs.200 crore. Known for giving blockbusters like "Kick", "Wanted" and "Ek Tha Tiger", Salman has acted in about 100 movies since he made his debut in 1988 with "Biwi Ho Toh Aisi" as a supporting actor. The film that brought him glory

was the 1989 hit "Maine Pyar Kiya". In no time after Salman was sentenced, Bollywood plunged into gloom. "We all know that Salman is excellent as human who can't fight with destiny," said producer and director Subhash Ghai. Actor-producer Riteish Deshmukh called Salman one of the "finest people I have met in this industry". Actress Bipasha Basu added: "Salman is the nicest human being in this business... Deeply saddened." Actress Sonakshi Sinha, Salman's co-star in "Dabangg", called the verdict "terrible news". Director Kunal Kohli said he was "heartbroken". But activist lawyer Abha Singh said justice has finally been done. "I am very happy," she told the media. "Justice has been done. The law has been upheld." She said the long delay in the case had given the impression that the rich could get away with murder in India, and that the moneyed were above the law. This is the third case of a highprofile Bollywood actor going to jail in Mumbai. In May 2013, actor Sanjay Dutt was convicted for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings and sentenced to five years in jail. He is lodged in Pune's Yerwada Central Jail.

Lok Sabha nod for pan-India goods and services tax New Delhi (IANS): The Lok Sabha on Wednesday gave its consent to a far-reaching amendment to the Constitution to pave the way for a pan-India goods and services tax regime and create a unified market across the country by doing away with a multiplicity of central and state levies. The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Second Amendment) Bill, 2014, was passed by a division with 336 ayes, 11 against and 10 abstentions. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced the bill was approved with two-thirds majority of the house, as required. "The whole country -one-sixth of world's population -- will now become a single market. It will give a necessary fillip as far as trade is concerned," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said as some opposition parties led by the Congress walked out, wanting a re-look by a parliamentary panel. Jaitley further said the new indirect tax regime, which was proposed around 12 years ago, could potentially add another 2 percent to India's economic growth. He also termed it the most important and the biggest tax reform since independence.

The bill will now go to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house, for passage following which it has to be ratified by at least half the states, before the president can put his seal of approval for it to take effect. Earlier, replying to the debate on the amendment bill, Jaitley refuted opposition claims that the government was pushing through some amendments to some provisions without taking the house into confidence and refusing to send it to a parliamentary panel. The finance minister said the same recommendations of the parliamentary panel, when the original bill was referred to it, were incorporated in the amended version and that the opposition had no reason to fault the government on this count. One such amendment, he cited as an example, was to set up a goods and services tax council, with representations from the central and the state governments, to oversee any dispute, rather than leave it to a panel led by a retired Supreme Court judge. Jaitley also warned that referring the amendment bill back to the relevant Standing Committee of parliament would result in missing the target date

for its implementation from April 1 next year, despite the broad consensus that had already been achieved after extensive consultations. The main purpose of the bill is a unified regime that will subsume most indirect taxes levied by the central and state governments such as excise duty, service tax, value added tax, sales tax and octroi to facilitate a common market across the country. Industry was elated and felt this was the first step to create a unified market. "We are hopeful that the bill would get the assent of the Rajya Sabha also in the current session of parliament with the support of all the political parties," said CII director general Chandrajit Banerjee. "There would be no tax on tax," the finance minister said in his reply to the debate and referred to how a plethora of levies were leading to duplication. It was escalating customer prices, stoking inflation, preventing efficient supply chains and lowering economies of scale. He also mentioned that the union cabinet has recently approved payment of compensation to states for the loss they would incur on account of a cut in the central

sales tax from four percent to two percent. This payment will be made for five years. Finance ministry officials said preliminary estimates indicated that Rs.33,000 crore can be the amount payable to

states and union territories for the entire period, and settling these claims will help create an enabling environment for rollout of the new regime. The Lok Sabha approved a government amendment to further

help states in the transition phase, by levying an additional tax of one percent on inter-state trade on goods. Like in the original bill, petroleum products, alcohol and tobacco were kept out of its purview till later.

Sonia launches fiercest attack on Modi government New Delhi (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday launched her fiercest attack yet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing his government of promoting crony capitalists and

displaying "obstinate arrogance", "hypocrisy" and of running the "most centralized government". After first taking on the government in parliament over vacant constitutional posts, Gandhi later

Commissioner," Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha during zero hour. "This post has been lying vacant for the last eight months. The posts of the three information commissioners of the Central Information Commission have also been lying vacant," she said. A combative Gandhi, who had moved an adjournment motion over the issue, said: "The prime minister made many promises to the people on transparency and good governance and continues to do so." She said the government's aim was to shield itself from public scrutiny. Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Jitendra Singh, said the CVC's post was vacant as the Supreme Court was overseeing the matter. A panel was close to shortlisting names for the post, he added. Unhappy with his reply, Congress members walked out of the house. In her speech before Congress MPs, Gandhi went several steps further, saying the Modi government had poisoned the political discourse, was "anti-farmer" and "arrogant" and "a government of some people, by one person, for a select few". Modi, she said, had very little to showcase after one year in office. "Behind the smokescreen of 'development', the government is provid-

ing 'achche din' only for crony capitalists. Under the pretext of 'Make in India', the government is planning to dilute the rights and interests of workers and labourers. Do they make nothing in India?" Gandhi asked. In a personal attack on Modi, Gandhi accused him of playing domestic politics on foreign soil, citing his criticism of the previous Congress-led UPA government and then prime minister Manmohan Singh in France. "In Canada, he sank to a new low by referring to the UPA in despicable terms. This outrageous remark on foreign soil belittles the dignity of the office he holds and is an embarrassment to the nation." The Modi government, she said, was the "most centralised government in India's recent history" where ministers hardly mattered and officials felt paralysed because all key decisions were taken by the PMO. And in a sarcastic style, the Congress president said the government deserved credit for the "most antifarmer legislative amendments to our land acquisition bill". She said the government can be given credit for "transforming our nation into a land where every day we hear of places of worship of minorities being desecrated. "We can give them credit

for making Indians feel unsafe in India and for poisoning the political discourse of our great country". Gandhi said there was no substantial economic achievement as job creation had slowed down, eight core sectors of economy had registered negative growth, investment in manufacturing was declining, and exports had fallen. "Truly, the hypocrisy and insensitivity of the government is breathtaking..." Gandhi said the government appeared to favour a limited set of corporate interests to the exclusion of almost everyone else, and that Modi and his government were still in election campaign mode. "We have to fight back," she said. Gandhi alleged that a "stream of provocative comments" from members of the ruling establishment continued unabated against entire communities and institutions of democracy. "Some in the Sangh Parivar want to revoke the voting rights of a community. Others want to erect statues of (Nathuram) Godse, the man who murdered the Father of the Nation (Mahatma Gandhi)," she said. And further on Modi, she said: "We can give this government credit for strengthening one man's power while weakening the strength of the state."

Nepal saw largest Indian response to natural calamity, official earthquake toll 7,802 Kathmandu (IANS): Nepal on Thursday said the powerful earthquake which rocked the Himalayan nation last month has claimed 7,802 lives, but the Nepal Red Cross Society put the toll at 8,413. The home ministry said another 15,911 people were injured in the April 25 temblor which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. A home ministry statement said 7,683 of the bodies were handed over to the kin of the deceased. A total of 6,088 injured people were still in various hospitals. The ministry said 322 people -- 211 Nepalese and 111 foreigners -were still missing. Sindhupalchok district accounted for 3,035 deaths, followed by Kathmandu where 1,210 people were killed. The quake destroyed 288,798 houses and 10,790 government buildings. Another 254,411 houses and 14,997 government buildings were partially damaged. Earlier on Thursday, the Nepal Red Cross Society put the toll at 8,413 and the number of injured at 17,576. The earthquake, the worst to hit Nepal after

1934, caused widespread destruction. THE massive rescue and relief work by India in quake-hit Nepal is its biggest response to a natural calamity in a foreign country, India's envoy here said on Monday. Ambassador Ranjit Rae made the observation during a briefing given to the Kathmandu-based diplomatic community on India's ongoing assistance to the Himalayan nation following the April 25 killer quake. "Operation Maitri" is the largest ever support operation by India in response to a natural calamity abroad, a statement from the Indian embassy said. "It represented not only the deepest commitment at the highest political level in India but also overwhelming outpouring of support from the people of India and over a dozen Indian states including those bordering Nepal." Rae said India was ready to offer any support to Nepal within its means. He said the first Indian Air Force (IAF) flight landed in Kathmandu with rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and relief material within

six hours of the devastating quake. Thereafter, 32 IAF flights brought in 520 tonnes of relief material containing tents, blankets, medicines, food, water, heavy engineering equipment, ambulances, RO plants, oxygen generators, two full-fledged army field hospitals with 18 medical teams, 18 army engineering teams and 16 NDRF teams. "These teams have been working round-theclock since their deployment in close coordination with the government of Nepal," he said. Eight MI-17 and five ALH helicopters of the Indian Army, operating from Kathmandu and Pokhara, have carried 207 tonnes of relief material in 449 sorties, evacuated over 900 injured and transported over 1,700 stranded people of various nationalities, the envoy said. "More than 2,600 earthquake victims have been treated so far by the Indian medical teams. Of these, 1,170 have been treated at Barpak, the epicentre of the earthquake." A 10-member Chinese rescue team was inducted and extricated from Pipaldanda in Sindhupalchok by the

IAF, he said. A Singaporean medical team was also inducted through IAF at Laprak. A 31-member team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and a medical team from Gujarat were working at the National Trauma Centre in Kathmandu, he said. Eleven doctors from Shantikunj in Haridwar were deployed in Kathmandu. Two teams from Haryana and Punjab have

started field kitchens at Bhaktapur and Kupondole, providing meals to over 10,000 people a day. He added that some 4,500 tonnes of relief material containing food, water, medicines, tents, blankets, tarpaulins and plastic sheets from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh had reached Nepal. According to the statement, the diplomats at the meeting "deeply appreciated" India's commitments to the rescue and relief work and said

they would like to work closely with New Delhi. On Monday, 18 trucks containing 100 tonnes of food and relief material and an ambulance with 5,000 blood testing kits were received from the Uttar Pradesh government. The Nepal earthquake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and killed more than 7,000 people, injured thousands and caused widespread destruction. It is feared that the death toll may go up further.

Embassy of India in Washington, the May 1 event was organized to advocate better physical and mental health for US military veterans. The event was led by Keith Mitchell, former National Football League (NFL) pro and a celebrity

yogi, who suffered a paralysing spinal injury and recovered through the practice of yoga. Prominent guests included Democrat House members Tim Ryan, Charles Rangel and Barbara Lee, Brennan Mullaney from Team Red, White and Blue,

a leading veteran non-profit organization and Tom Voss, an Iraq War veteran. Around 60 Congressional officials participated in the yoga and meditation session besides senior embassy officials. The yoga event was focused on practice of yoga as an effective tool for the physiological and physical healing of war veterans who get affected by mental illnesses upon returning from combat. It is estimated that since the start of the war in Afghanistan in 2001, more than 100,000 combat veterans have sought help for mental illness and yoga is considered to be a form of health care support in such cases of post-traumatic stress disorder. Lawmaker Ryan, who joined the yoga and medita-

tion session, said: "The extremely high levels of stress Americans deal with on a daily basis is an important issue facing our country." "Mindfulness and the practice of yoga help to reduce stress, improve concentration, and increase feelings of well-being," he said expressing support for the event. Rangel said "As a Korean War Veteran, Yoga on the Hill's mission to promote wellness among the veteran community is close to my heart". Lee, member of House Subcommittee on Veteran Affairs, hoped that "we will continue expanding research and access to health alternatives like yoga that improve the quality of life for our brave veterans." Counsellor Mohit Yadav

from Indian Embassy highlighted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks at the United Nations describing yoga as "an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition" and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Starting with a talk by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on 'Nurturing Peace through Yoga and Meditation' on April 29, the Indian Embassy here is organizing a series of events in the run-up to the International Day of Yoga on June 21. The embassy also hosted an event at an open theatre at University of Maryland, in partnership with their student association DESI (Develop, Empower and Synergize India), Life in Yoga organization and the Art of Living Foundation.

India's first satellite-controlled solar plant opened in Punjab Hoshiarpur (IANS): India's first satellite-controlled solar power plant has come up in Lalpur village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district. Built at a cost of Rs.35 crore, the project will produce 4.2 MW of electricity.

The plant uses the 'Single Axis Tracking East West Tilt Technology', which follows the path of the sun during the day to generate eight percent more units of electricity compared to solar power plants having traditional fixed type structures,

Punjab's New and Renewable Energy Minister Bikram Singh Majithia said after inaugurating the plant, 160 km from Chandigarh. The plant has been set up by Aditya Medisales, which is part of the Sun Pharma Group.

Punjab to reduce area under paddy cultivation Chandigarh (IANS): Food grain state Punjab will drastically reduce the area under water-gulping paddy cultivation, an official said on Tuesday. Under its agriculture diversification mission to conserve depleting ground water, the government will reduce the area under paddy cultivation from the present 26.5 lakh hectare to 14.5 lakh hectare. The reduced area of 12 lakh hectare will be used to grow alternative crops like maize,

sugarcane, cotton, pulses, fruits and vegetables besides agro-forestry in the next five years, said an official spokesperson of the agriculture department. He said the Punjab government was also providing 80 percent subsidy on agricultural infrastructure to farmers for adopting drip irrigation, water tanks, solar water pumps and solar connections. The state-of-the-art Borlaug Institute for South Asia was being established at Laddowal

near Ludhiana at a cost of Rs.500 crore to develop new varieties of wheat, cotton and maize crop through research, he said. The spokesman said 50 percent subsidy on seeds, insecticides, pesticides, machinery and other input materials would be given to boost the cultivation of alternative crops. Punjab contributes nearly 50 percent of food grains to the central kitty despite having just 1.54 percent of the country's geographical area.

Finally, Sukhbir Badal meets molestation victim's family Moga (IANS): Five days after a teenage girl was molested and pushed out of a bus owned by his company leading to her death, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday finally met the family members of the victim here. Badal met Arshdeep Kaur's family at the Civil HospitalMoga and termed the incident "very unfortunate".

The victim's mother, Shinder Kaur, who was also thrown out of the same bus near Moga town last Wednesday, is admitted at the hospital with serious injuries. Assuring the family of "exemplary punishment" to the culprits, Badal said the Punjab government would stand with the family. The death of the girl led to protests in Moga and other

places in Punjab. Activists and the victim's family demanded a case be registered against Badal as he was owner of the bus transport company. The company, Orbit Aviation, had earlier agreed to pay Rs.24 lakh as compensation to the victim's family. The Punjab government also offered a job to a kin of the victim.

Inviting the company to invest more in renewable energy production in Punjab, Majithia said the state was offered assured 25 years power purchase agreement (PPA) for projects generating clean energy. "Punjab has fixed target

Uproar in parliament over Moga molestation incident New Delhi (IANS): The molestation and death of a 13-year-old girl on being pushed out of a private bus near Moga in Punjab led to an uproar in Parliament on Tuesday, with both houses witnessing adjournments over the issue. In the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Amrinder Singh and Aam Aadmi Party's Bhagwant Maan moved adjournment motions to discuss the Moga case and demanded suspension of the question hour, but Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected the plea. Singh said the Punjab government should be dismissed and President's rule imposed in the state. Opposition members created a ruckus, displaying placards and raising slogans against the Parkash Singh Badal govern-

ment in the state, forcing two adjournments during the question hour. Orbit transport company which operated the bus is owned by Punjab's Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Members from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), meanwhile, raised the demand for a separate high court for the state of Telangana. The scene was no different when the house met again, and amid the din, the speaker was forced to adjourn the house till 2 p.m. In the Rajya Sabha, the issue of Moga molestation forced two adjournments during zero hour. As soon as the house met, Congress leader Ambika Soni raised the issue. "There is a complete breakdown of law and order in

Punjab...the Centre must intervene," she said. Congress leader Anand Sharma joined her and said the issue is "very serious" and the house should condemn the incident. Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien, however, said no notice was given to the chair for taking up the issue. "I am not saying anything about merit of what you are saying. All I have said is, please give notice," Kurien said. Communist Party of IndiaMarxist leader Sitaram Yechury urged the chair to allow the matter as it was important. "Because of the importance of the incident, please allow us to discuss," Yechury said. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the state gov-

ernment has taken immediate action against the culprits and it was not proper to discuss the working of state governments in the house. Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, meanwhile, demanded imposition of President's rule in Punjab. However, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) members opposed taking up of the issue for discussion in the house. Amid the ruckus, Kurien adjourned the house for ten minutes. When the house met again, similar scenes were repeated and the chair adjourned the house till 12 noon. The family of the Dalit girl, who died last Wednesday, had refused to allow her autopsy and cremation till the owners of the Orbit Aviation Transport compa-

ny, implying Sukhbir Badal and others, were booked. The mother and daughter were targeted with indecent gestures and were molested by some goons on the bus. When they resisted the molesters, including three bus staff, they were thrown out of the speeding vehicle. The girl died immediately while the mother was admitted to a hospital in a serious condition. The body of the girl was brought by her family from the Faridkot Medical College and Hospital where her post-mortem examination was conducted. She was cremated at her native village in Punjab on Sunday. Buses of the Orbit transport company were taken off the roads in Punjab on Saturday following orders from Sukhbir Badal.

Resign or shut down businesses, Amarinder tells Badal Chandigarh (IANS): Congress leader Amarinder Singh on Sunday demanded that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal should either resign from his post or shut down his family's transport and other businesses, including the controversial Orbit Aviation, as it was a clear case of conflict of interest. "All these years, in a clear case of conflict of interest, you have brutally abused your position and power and multiplied your fleet of buses from 40 to 250 by threatening and bullying not only other private transporters, but also the PRTC

(Punjab Road Transport Corporation) and Punjab Roadways, into submission, which has eventually led to everybody, except you, suffering huge losses while you are making huge profits," Amarinder Singh, the deputy party leader in the Lok Sabha, said in a statement issued here. Amarinder Singh said that when he became Punjab chief minister in 2002, he was on the board of directors of some companies like Ranbaxy, DLF, Industrial Cables and Mount Shivalik Breweries, and steeped down.

"I resigned from all the companies after seeking legal opinion from the Punjab advocate general, who told me that this amounted to conflict of interest since all these companies were

based in and operating from Punjab," he noted. He alleged that the Badals had grabbed about 250 route permits but were actually plying about 500 buses on all the profit-making routes. "No government official or police can dare to stop these buses as your conductors and drivers misbehave with officials and get away with it. The Moga incident is the outcome of the same immunity from law you have provided to your erring and bullying drivers and conductors," Amarinder claimed, adding that Punjab

Police and administration were being misused to promote business interests of the Badal family. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and senior lawyer H.S.Phoolka said on Sunday that he has written to President Pranab Mukherjee, seeking action against the Punjab government for complete breakdown of law and order and official machinery. He said that the entire administration in Punjab was working to shield the Badal family and their business interests.

Sports Authority of India to appoint 119 coaches with such mass recruitment drive. As part of the initiative, coaches will be appointed for two separate zones -- one zone that covers SAI North-Eastern Centres in Imphal and Guwahati which cover Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghlaya, Nagaland and Sikkim, and the other zone for the rest of the country. For the same, 119 coaches will be appointed in 24 disciplines which include boxing, archery, football, wrestling and weightlifting.

Rahane, who is currently the leading run-getter in the current season with 430 runs. "I think we have batted well when it comes to Shane Watson. Also Ajinkya Rahane has been so consistent right from the start. Karun Nair didn't get to bat so much. That is the reason he came in ahead of Sanju Samson against Delhi," he said. "It's a positive for us that the top five are in form. Everyone is really hitting the ball well. Even our five, six, seven are big strikers off the ball. James Faulkner is there at seven. So it's all about what we need from the individual," Binny said. On Thursday's match against Sunrisers, he said: "We will play on a wicket that is very much suited to our style. Our bowling attack and batting has been good here in the last match against Delhi."

"It has always been our aim to train and prepare sportspersons to participate in international competitions and excel in sports and coaching is an important part of the whole process. So this is a step towards strengthening the coaching cadre in the country," SAI Director General Injeti Srinivas said. SAI is also appointing three coaches for its Special Area Games centre at Port Blair for cycling, canoeing and kayaking, and rowing.

New Delhi (IANS): The Sports Authority of India (SAI) is all set to appoint 119 coaches on contract basis across the country with an aim to augment the availability of trainers in selected disciplines. His IPL team, Rajasthan Royals, is currently in second spot with 14 points from 11 games, needing one more win to secure their place in the play-offs. Binny said a combined effort by the bowling and batting units has helped them play consistent cricket in this season. "We have done well so far in the tournament and we know that we are one win away from making it to the play-offs. We have played some good cricket. And if we play good cricket that one win will come. Also it's important to hold on the winning momentum," the 30year-old said. The all-rounder specially heaped praise on Ajinkya

In this week's inaugural Mauritius Open to be played at the Heritage Golf Club, the first tri-sanctioned event by the Asian, European and Sunshine Tours, Bhullar is confident of putting up a good show. "A top five or top-10 would be good, winning would be good this week. The way I'm playing right now, I won't be surprised if I'll be able to do that on Sunday," he said. "It’s a great week. President honours talent at 62nd National Film Awards

PRESIDENT Pranab Mukherjee presented the 62nd National Film Awards on Sunday at a glittering ceremony here studded with talent representing the diversity of the Indian film industry. Shashi Kapoor, honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award this year, couldn’t attend and the veteran actor will be feted in Mumbai soon. With 45 awards in Feature Film category and a total of 21 awards in the NonFeature film category, the award ceremony was attended by talents from Bollywood along with regional film industries Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Assamese. It also saw performances by 62nd National Film Award winners Sukhwinder Singh, who won Best Male Playback Singer for the song "Bismil" from “Haider, and Uttara Unnikrishanan, who bagged the Best Playback Female Singer for the song "Azhagu" from Tamil movie "Saivam. A special film on Shashi Kapoor was also shown on the occasion, where Pallavi Joshi and Rajat Kapoor played the hosts. The president too gave "special congratulations" to the ailing 77-year-old actor. "My special congratulation is to Shri Shashi Kapoor,

who has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. His contribution to cinema has been tremendous. He is a true living legend. He began his career as a child artist in the films 'Aag' and 'Awara', and then we saw him as a flamboyant hero in many blockbuster films. "He made his mark not only as an actor, but also as a producer and remarkable contribution to the Indian cinema, where he balanced his work in theatre and cinema. Shri Sashi Kapoor is the third person to win the Dadasaheb Phalke award in his family -- the other two being Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor. I wish him a long and healthy life," he said. Dressed in a floor sweeping gown, Kangana Ranaut received the Best Actress honour from the president. The Best Actor award was picked up by Vijay for his "subtle and non-stereotypical playing of a woman trapped in a man's body", in Kannada film "Nanu Avanalla Avalu". The team of “Haider - a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy “Hamlet set in the backdrop of Kashmir, was also present at the ceremony where the film too won Best Dialogues and Music Direction for the film’s

director Vishal Bhardwaj; Best Choreography for Norway-based Sudesh Adhana; and Best Costume Designer for Dolly Ahluwalia. Vikramaditya Motwane and Vikas Bahl also received the honour for “Queen for Best Hindi film. Other films to get awards in Best Film category are "Othello" (Assamese), "Nirbashito" (Bengali), "Harivu" (Kannada), "Nachom - IA Kumpasar" (Konkani), "Ain" (Malayalam), "Killa" (Marathi), "Aadim Vichar" (Odiya), "Punjab 1984" (Punjabi), "Kuttram Kadithal" (Tamil) and "Chandamama Kathalu" (Telugu). Omung Kumar, whose “Mary Kom won the Best Popular Film Providing W h o l e s o m e Entertainment, turned up in black ensemble with stripes. In the Best Children's Film, there was a tie between Marathi entertainer "Elizabeth Ekadashi" and Tamil movie "Kaakkaa Muttai", for which actor Dhanush accepted the award. “The National Film awards stands for the immense honour befitting the highest governmental recognition in the field of cinema. I welcome and congratulate all the recipients for this year. You have done

India proud, said the president. He also shared that the Indian film industry is “today the largest film industry in the world in terms of number of movies being produced with about 1600 films made every year on an

average. The film industry today is a full-fledged economy having a turnover of a magnitude of Rs.1,02,600 crore. "By now mainstream Hindi cinema is internationally recognised. We must also make focus on representing our regional films,

which are equally impressive and deserve a global attention. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Minister of State for Information and B r o a d c a s t i n g Rajyavardhan Rathore also attended the award ceremony. (IANS)

"To get a National Award for your first film is something that people dream about. People spend their whole life and win every award, but the National Award. With the award comes the responsibility as well," Kumar told IANS.

The biopic on boxer M.C. Mary Kom won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing W h o l e s o m e Entertainment. I've got a good sense of humour, says Sunny Leone "KUCH Kuch Locha Hai" is Sunny Leone's first comedy film, but the actress says she is not new to the genre as she has a "good sense of humour" and has "a little bit of training" in comedy. The 33-year-old, who was here on Monday to promote the forthcoming comedy caper along with her co-stars Ram Kapoor and Navdeep Chhabra, said she does not feel embarrassed while making a fool of herself onscreen. "'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' is my first comedy film. But something that people don't know is that when I lived in the US and used to work there, I was

part of a comedy group. There were stand-up comedians in that group and in between we used to do comedy skits," Sunny said. "So I've a little bit of training in comedy, though I wouldn't say that I'm the funniest person ever, but I have a good sense of humour. I'm not afraid of chirping upon myself and make a fool of me on camera. I don't feel embarrassed doing it," she added. Directed by Devang Dholakia, the movie will feature Ram as a 45-yearold married man, Pravin Patel, who witnesses a 'locha' (turmoil) in his life after he gets a chance to

meet Bollywood star Shanaya (Sunny), about whom he always fantasised. "Shanaya and I are completely different. She is a fictional one. But there are similarities as she also is an actress like me. There are certain

similarities of glamour that are there, but she is not real," Sunny said. Asked about his working experience with the former adult filmstar, Ram said: "When we started this film, I knew I was working with an indemand, hot and sexy co-

star as everybody wants to work with her these days. But I never thought that it would be so entertaining. "Everybody knows that I'm a prankster, but Sunny is way beyond me. She is a tomboy and it doesn't come across easily. Normally this kind of fun, I used to have with boys like with Sajid Khan and others in 'Humshakals', but this is my first time with a girl. Sunny can be one of the boys any day." Given the film's name, has there been any 'locha' (turmoil) in Ram's life? "I have faced a lot of troubles in my life. When I was a kid I used to steal my father's car and go

out. I'm the only son in this world, who has damaged his father’s two cars in a single night. So it was quite similar to my film 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti'," he said. Navdeep, who is making his debut with the film, said: "I'm playing Ram's son in it. We are always after each other's cases. The film is a family comedy because it has everything - a mother, father, and son. Also we have various love angles in it. There is nothing like adult comedy in it." "Kuch Kuch Locha Hai", which also stars Evelyn Sharma, was slated for release on Friday. (IANS)

LOOKS like actress Sushmita Mukherjee, who is mostly seen taunting her on-screen widow grand-daughter Ruhana Khanna in soap opera “Gangaa”, is completely different from her Ammaji avatar behind the camera. In between shoots of the TV show, Sushmita is seen spending time with Ruhana, who plays Gangaa in it. Since she doesn’t have a daughter, Sushmita enjoys spending time with Ruhana and they talk about parents and grand-parents. Also, Ruhana is said to be fond of Sushmita’s pet dog Rajkumari and asks about her every time, requesting Sushmita to get her on the sets. “That little girl is a doll and I love her,” Sushmita said in a statement. “I whine so much to the director that I don't want to torture young child on the show and beg them to give me some motherly role because even if it’s all just an act I don’t want to be mean to her; she is such a sweet girl. Her mother is also a wonderful woman and raised her daughter really well,” she added. The story of the show is about a “self independent” child widow -- Gangaa, who faces hardships of life and tackles people who do not welcome her in the society. (IANS)

US has given Pakistan arms worth $5.4 bilion since 2001: Report Washington (IANS): Since the September 11, 2001 terror attack, the US has given Pakistan arms worth about $5.4 billion for counter-terrorism operations, along with many "big ticket" platforms more suited to conventional warfare. Sales of F-16 combat aircraft and related equipment account for nearly half of these Foreign Military Sales agreements with Pakistan, according to a report by Congressional Research Service for lawmakers. In dollar value terms, the bulk of purchases have been made with Pakistani national funds, although US grants have eclipsed these in recent years, CRS said. Congress, it noted, has appropriated about $3.6 billion in Foreign Military Financing (FMF) for Pakistan since 2001, more than twothirds of which has been disbursed. These funds are used to purchase US military equipment for longer-term modernization efforts. Pakistan also has been granted US defence supplies as Excess Defence Articles (EDA). In April 2015, the State Department approved a possible $952 million FMS deal with Pakistan for 15 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters and 1,000 Hellfire II missiles, along with helicopter engines, avionics, training, and support. Under Coalition Support Funds (in the Pentagon budget), Pakistan received 26 Bell

412EP utility helicopters, along with related parts and maintenance, valued at $235 million. For counterinsurgency operations, the US has provided 4 Mi-17 multirole helicopters (another 6 were provided temporarily at no cost), 4 King Air 350 surveillance aircraft, 450 vehicles for the Frontier Corps and 20 Buffalo explosives detection and disposal vehicles, the CRS report said. Through International Military Education and Training and other programs, the US has funded and provided training for more than 2,000 Pakistani military officers, report noted, Major post-2001 defence supplies provided, or soon to be provided, under FMF include: * eight P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft and their refurbishment (valued at $474 million, four delivered, three of which were destroyed in a 2011 attack by Islamist militants); * at least 5,750 military radio sets ($212 million); * 2,007 TOW anti-armor missiles ($186 million); * six AN/TPS-77 surveillance radars ($100 million); * six C-130E Hercules transport aircraft and their refurbishment ($76 million); * the Perry-class missile frigate USS McInerney, via special EDA authorization ($65 million for refurbishment; now the PNS Alamgir); * 20 AH-1F Cobra attack helicopters via EDA ($48 mil-

lion for refurbishment, 12 delivered); and * 15 Scan Eagle reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles ($30 million). Supplies paid for with a mix of Pakistani national funds and FMF include: * up to 60 Mid-Life Update kits for F-16A/B combat aircraft (valued at $891 million, with $477 million of this in FMF; Pakistan has purchased 45 such kits, with all upgrades completed to date); and * 115 M-109 self-propelled howitzers ($87 million, with $53 million in FMF). Notable items paid or to be paid for entirely with Pakistani national funds include: * 18 new F-16C/D Block 52 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft (valued at $1.43 billion); * F-16 armaments including 500 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles; 1,450 2,000-pound bombs; 500 JDAM Tail Kits for gravity bombs; and 1,600 Enhanced Paveway laserguided kits, also for gravity bombs ($629 million); * 100 Harpoon anti-ship missiles ($298 million); * 500 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles ($95 million); and * seven Phalanx Close-In Weapons System naval guns ($80 million). Major articles transferred via EDA include: * 14 F-16A/B Fighting Falcon combat aircraft; * 59 T-37 Tweet military trainer jets; and * 374 M113 armoured personnel carriers.

Green peas are one of the most nutritious of the leguminous vegetables and are rich in antioxidants, vitamins A, C, K, and B-complex and minerals such as zinc, iron, calcium, and manganese. They are a great source of protein, fiber, and omega3 fats in the form of alphalinolenic acid (ALA). These essential fatty acids makes green peas an ideal food for brain and cardiovascular health and their phytosterols are vital for helping to lower cholesterol levels in the body. They are also a fantastic weight loss food

since they have the ability to ward off hunger and keep you feeling satiated for long periods of time. Green peas contain a compound called coumestrol which has been

shown to help lower the risk of stomach cancer and they also contain anti-inflammatory properties making them a particularly good food for those who suffer with autoim-

mune disorders such as arthritis, COPD, heart disease, lupus, fibromyalgia, and bursitis. Green peas have also been found to help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes due to their relatively low glycemic index and blood sugar regulating properties. Fresh green peas are easily grown in patio containers or gardens and can often be found in the produce section of the supermarket year-round. No funds crunch to delay freedom memorial: Punjab CM Chandigarh (IANS): Unmindful of the severe funds crunch being faced by the state, the Punjab government on Tuesday said it will not allow lack of funds to delay the 'Jang-e-Azadi' project. The project, likely to cost over Rs.200 crore, is related to a memorial being built to highlight Punjab's contribution in the freedom struggle. It is being built near Kartarpur town, near Jalandhar, 165 km from here. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday said the project

should be completed within 18 months so that it could be dedicated to the nation next year. Chairing a meeting of 'Jang-e-Azadi' foundation here, Badal said there was no dearth of funds for this 'dream project'.

He said the memorial is aimed at showcasing the valuable contribution of Punjabis in the national freedom struggle. "This project is of immense importance, so we must pull all the stops to ensure that it is completed as soon as possible," Badal told foundation members and officers. He said it was important to highlight the role of martyrs of the freedom struggle so that the new generations understand nationalism and patriotism better.

Congress blocks trains in Punjab for farmers' cause Chandigarh (IANS): Congress leaders and activists in Punjab blocked trains at some places in Punjab on Saturday, demanding the state and central governments take immediate steps to help farmers who have been affected by the recent unseasonal rains and erratic weather.

Congress activists blocked trains near the Sirhind railway station, 60 km from here. They were led by Punjab Congress president Pratap Singh Bajwa. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi visited grain markets in Sirhind, Khanna and Mandi Gobindgarh on April 29 to listen to the prob-

lems being faced by farmers. Congress activists, led by MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, blocked railway tracks near Ludhiana. "We are highlighting the cause of the farmers as the Centre and the Punjab government have abandoned them," Ravneet Singh said.

Punjab bus passenger molested; driver, conductor held Chandigarh (IANS): The driver and conductor of a private bus were arrested after a woman alleged that she had been molested by a passenger near Punjab's Khanna town, police said on Monday. The incident took place near Khanna town, 60 km from here, on Sunday when the woman boarded the bus from Sirhind town to Sahnewal near Ludhiana. In her complaint to the police, the woman alleged that a fellow passenger sat next to her and started touching her.

When she protested, he moved to a seat behind her but continued to pass lewd comments. The victim said she complained to the bus conductor and driver but they did not listen to her. She then called up her husband who informed the police. The police set up 'nakas' (check-point) along the

route but the bus driver did not stop despite being signalled to stop. The police chased and stopped the bus. Driver Jagwinder Singh and conductor Kulwinder Singh have been arrested, Khanna district police chief G.S. Gill said. However, the passenger is yet to be arrested. The incident took place just four days after a 13year-old girl was molested and thrown out of a moving bus belonging to Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal's company, resulting in her death.

2016 Ford F-150 pickup will be available with Class-Exclusive Compressed Natural Gas, Propane Capability. Ford, North America’s truck leader, will offer the 2016 F150 with an available gaseousfuel prep package that enables 5.0-litre V8-powered models to run on clean, lowcost compressed natural gas or propane, making Ford the

with a factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package that includes upgraded intake and exhaust valves and valve seats to ensure the engine performs to Built Ford Tough standards customers expect. “We surveyed customers

likely to use natural gas or propane, and 72 percent told us they want to have these alternative-fuel capabilities available on F-150 with the 5.0-litre V8 engine,” said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager. “We expect the gaseousfuel prep package will be even more popular than it was on the 2014 F-150 with the 3.7litre V6 engine, given the capability of the 2016 F-150 5.0-litre V8.” 2016 F-150 trucks running on CNG or propane will be

able to tow the same amount as if they were running on gasoline. Payload capability is the same as well – minus the weight of the installed CNG or propane system. Thanks to the use of advanced lightweighting materials, the 2016 F-150 with an installed CNG or propane system can haul hundreds of pounds more than a similarly equipped 2014 F-150. With the addition of the 2016 F-150, Ford Motor Company will offer eight Ford commercial vehicles available from the factory with a

gaseous-fuel prep option – more than any other North American auto manufacturer. Compressed natural gas is mainly composed of methane. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of approximately 3,600 psi. Another benefit of this alternative fuel is cleaner emissions. Vehicles operating on CNG can reduce tailpipe CO2 emissions by approximately 20 per cent when compared with the same vehicle operating on gasoline.

cylinder unit is now replaced by a more fuel efficient motor that produces 109 hp and 107 lb.-ft torque. Base transmission is a five- speed manual although a CVT auto transmission is a $1,300 option. The 2015 Nissan Versa base S model, starts at

$13,348 with a five speed manual transmission and 15 inch steel wheels. The 1.6 SV has a MSRP of $14,998 and adds air conditioning, Bluetooth, power windows, remote keyless entry, power locks, upgraded cloth, cruise and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. The SL model starts at $16,998, which includes smart key entry, pushbutton start/stop, adjustable cargo floor and center-console. For another $680 the Convenience Package offers a USB socket, a 4.3-inch display, backup camera, satellite radio, a rearseat armrest/cupholder, nifty Divide-N-Hide storage system, 16-inch alloys, heated front seats, upgraded audio and fog lights. Want more? A $720 Tech Package that navigation, NissanConnectSM (Links to your smart phone functions) and four-camera Around View Monitor. An extra $1,300 adds the aforementioned CVT. With a fully loaded versa Note with all the options parked on the driveway, it is easy to go to over $19,000 if you go mad on the options. Our tester

was the sporty SR version priced at $18,698 plus options, freight and PDE with no charge standard equipment including 16-inch sport alloy wheels, unique SR front grille, body colored side sills, spoilers, 5 inch multi-function display screen and a cool stylish interior color scheme, The interior of the Note is bright, neat and functional, with a big front windscreen and side windows offering excellent visibility. The dash and instrument panel is also nicely done. Controls and instruments are well designed with good ergonomics. The screen for the backup camera as on our tester was very clear and effective. Out back a fairly roomy rear cabin offers rear doors that open to nearly 90 degrees and enough legroom for adults to sit comfortably. Headroom is also good. A very neat feature in the Note is an optional bi-level cargo floor, called “Divide-NHide” that creates both a large flat load floor with the rear seats folded and a covered security compartment. On the road, the Nissan

Note is amazingly quiet at cruising speed thanks to the double-sealed doors, acoustic windshield and extra sound proofing insulation that has been engineered into the car. Sub-compact cars can be notoriously noisy, however the Note drives smoothly. Handling is also good with tactile steering and just a trace of body lean on hard cornering, but nothing that upsets the cars composure. The Note is no sports performer with just 109 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft. torque, but does not feel weak and anemic. In fact the 1.6 engine is lively and quite the gas sipper with official Transport Canada fuel economy estimates of 6.1 L/100 km in the city, 4.8 on the highway and 5.5 combined for a Note with the optional CVT transmission, which is well matched to the motor. The Note is also very good when it comes to fuel economy. A fun to drive nice to own compact hatchback. To be considered. 2014 Nissan Versa Note SR: Priced from at $13,348. Price as tested $20,400 including all options freight and PDE
