Modi makes a 'hugely successful journey' to America

GUARANTEED Absolute Lowest Prices !

Washington (IANS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up what he himself called a "hugely successful journey" to the US, winning over everyone, from President Barack Obama down, hard selling India to big business and wowing IndianAmericans. In a joint vision statement and a joint op-ed in the Washington Post, something again unprecedented, Modi and Obama vowed to "chalein saath saath together we go forward" with a new agenda to realise the full potential of a renewed US-India partnership for the 21st century. Never once was mentioned the denial of a US visa

to Modi for nearly a decade nor a major diplomatic row over the December arrest and strip search of an Indian diplomat that had virtually stalled India-US relationship. A US-India joint statement issued after Tuesday's summit at the White House that lasted nearly two hours listed what some critics called a 'laundry list' of things they can do together in fields ranging from health and education to space exploration. But the real significance of the trip lay in the fact that it put the India-US partnership back on the rails. And, more importantly, Modi secured a commitment from Obama to make joint and concerted

efforts to dismantle terrorist safe havens. The statement specifically mentioned four Pakistanbased groups - Lashkar-e Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, the D-Company, and the Haqqanis besides Al Qaeda and also reiterated their call for Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack to justice.

was created where everybody got excited and people started believing that the world is going to change and there would be major agreements between the two countries. "That India and the United States have a strategic partnership, this is not new. There are many aspects to this. The nuclear agreement of 2008 was inked by (former PM) Manmohan Singh and it is good that a BJP prime minister is showing interest in this," he said. Sharma added: "But it is important that Manmohan Singh had put his government at stake and the BJP had opposed it. I want to put that on record.

BUT the Congress said PM Narendra Modi's US visit was "disappointing" as there were "no major takeaways" from the trip. "When you look at the outcome, it is definitely disappointing. There are no major takeaways of this much hyped visit," Congress s p o ke s p e r s o n A n a n d Sharma told the media here. He said an atmosphere

Incheon, South Korea (IANS): Two-time champions India beat holders Pakistan 4-2 via penalties in the men's hockey final to win the Asian Games gold medal after 16 years at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium here Thursday, and thus booked a berth for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh pulled off two brilliant saves as India won 4-2 in the shoot-outs. Dharamvir Singh converted the last shoot-out for India to trigger wild celebrations in the stadium. It was after 32 years that both India and Pakistan were facing off in the Asian Games final. The last time when the neighbours faced in the 1982 Asian Games final, India were humiliated 1-7 in Delhi. Pakistan are the most accomplished team in the Asian Games, having won eight gold medals since 1958.

Will build India of your dreams, join in our effort: Modi to Indians abroad New York (IANS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi connected with thousands of rapturously cheering Indian diaspora at Madison Square Garden here Sunday, promising them he would deliver on the electoral promise of a resurgent India and urged them to join in the mass movement to work for their country of origin. Addressing a 20,000strong crowd at the venue - that has seen former US presidents and rock stars take to the stage but never an Indian politician - and also thousands watching the event live outside on giant screens, and millions back home and around the world on TV and internet, Modi announced relief measures for the diaspora, including lifelong visas for Persons of Indian Origin cardholders and the merger of the PIO and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) schemes with a new scheme to be announced soon. Speaking in his chatty style in Hindi for almost an hour, and attired in cream kurta-pyjama and a light orange jacket, Modi praised the Indian diaspora for its contribution to IT, saying India was no longer consid-

ered a land of snake charmers but of software wizards. "Our forefathers maybe would play with snakes, but we play with the mouse (computer mouse)," he said, to wild cheers. Referring to the elections that swept him to power in May, Modi thanked the diaspora for their support and said he has not taken even a 15minute vacation since becoming prime minister. "Winning elections is not for sitting on a seat, it is a responsibility. And I have not taken even a 15-minute vacation since becoming PM," he said. As the crowd chanted "Modi, Modi" throughout his speech, the prime minister said his government will not leave any stone unturned to fulfil the expectations of the people. He said India is at an opportune cusp of circumstances, blessed with a vibrant democracy, with 65 percent of its people under the age of 35, and a market of 1.25 billion people and will scale new heights in the near future. "These three things are present in one country, this is not there anywhere else in the world. And on the basis of this

India will cross new heights - it is my belief," said Modi as the crowd chanted, clapped and cheered every time the prime minister made a good point and appealed to their patriotism. Referring to the ageing populace across the world, he said that India is blessed with the youngest population and the largest workforce in the world. "India can supply the workforce to the world," he said, suggesting that India should export its trained teachers and nurses across the world. He also proposed that the diaspora should join in the efforts to rebuild the country, a "vikas jan andolan" or a mass movement for development - in helping in any way they could. Referring to the skill development that his government has launched for the youth, he said his government has created a skill development ministry and would invite other countries to join in the effort. He also referred to the Make in India campaign the government launched ahead of his US visit to invite investments and to manufacture in India as also the sanitation campaign to make a Clean India, a

Modi overshadowed Nawaz Sharif at UN: Pakistani daily

Islamabad (IANS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at the UN was every-

thing his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif's was not, said a Pakistani daily Monday. An editorial "Modi at the UN" in the Daily Times said: "Modi continued his charm offensive in the west with a speech to the UN General Assembly that was everything Nawaz Sharif ’s was not." Modi began with a quaint reference to The Canadian Bookkeepers Association India’s ancient (CBA) offers you the opportunity of Vedic culture, becoming a Registered Professional a running Bookkeeper. theme in his speech. He took the opportunity following this

to rebut Nawaz Sharif ’s speech from the day before. "He (Modi) was correct of course; the General Assembly is no longer a platform for serious discussion, it is a way for heads of state to build an image for their country and themselves," said the editorial. It noted that Modi’s speech, with its references to Indian spiritual traditions was "written for the US public to consume, while Sharif ’s bland, narrow focus was everything that western publics feel is wrong with Pakistan - an obsession with India, desire for territory and a total lack of charisma and likeability". It went on to say that the Indian prime minister's speech did not focus on Pakistan except by implication. "Also not lost were his references to India’s large population, a way to position India as a major global market...Climate change and poverty eradication, alongside terrorism, made up

Modi’s three main talking points." The daily said that it is a credit to Modi’s political acumen that he understands how important western public opinion is to shaping policy. "India’s insistence that Kashmir is a ‘non-issue’ bilaterally reflects Pakistan’s continuance of supporting jihadi prox-

ies to achieve strategic goals. Workable solutions exist and have been discussed but Kashmir remains unresolved, while Pakistan’s support for proxies has cost it dearly in lives and money. Neither position is tenable but India’s appears less so, partly because it de facto controls the territory."

Make 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' a success: President

New Delhi (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee called upon every Indian to do his utmost to make the "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan", that was launched on Gandhi Jayanti Thursday, a success. In his message to the nation ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, Mukherjee said: "I call upon every Indian to do his utmost to make a suc-

cess of the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' launched by the government to ensure hygiene, waste management and sanitation across the country." "I also call upon everyone concerned to work hard to achieve the goal of toilets in every home by 2019 - the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji's birth," he added. "Gandhiji believed that

cleanliness is next only to godliness. Let us pledge this day to convert cleanliness into a national passion. Every road, every path, every office, every home, every hut, every stream and every particle in the air around us can and must be kept clean," he added. Urging people to "re-dedicate" themselves to Gandhi's ideals of truth,

non-violence and all-round development, the president said Gandhi's leadership had inspired millions to unite in the cause of freedom and independence. "He also taught us to stand resolutely against fear, to understand the importance of truth and to work for the betterment of our motherland," Mukherjee said.

Election Commission develops video games for voter awareness

New Delhi (IANS): In a first of its kind effort, the Election Commission of India has developed a video game titled "Get! Set! The game has been created to broadly engage citizens of all age groups to learn about democracy and electoral process. "In a fun-filled and interactive manner, the video game gives out pieces of information and interesting details in 10

levels of mazes," an official from the Election Commission said. "With every successive level, the information becomes more specific to subjects such as Indian democracy, registering to vote, ethical voting, help from Election Commission and so on. The mazes also get more challenging with the player clearing each level," the official said. Under the Commission's SVEEP (Systematic Voter Education and Electoral

Participation) programme, the video game has been developed in collaboration with the United Nations D e v e l o p m e n t Programme, India. It is available on Election Commission's website www.eci.gov.in. Will Jayalalitha's jailing help BJP to grow in Tamil Nadu? New Delhi (IANS): The jailing of the charismatic J. Jayalalithaa will help the BJP to grow in Tamil Nadu, a state where it has always been a bit player, party leaders say. Bharatiya Janata Party leaders feel their party is bound to get more support now that the ruling AIADMK is rudderless minus Jayalalithaa and the DMK - the main opposition - is in disarray. As for the Congress, it appears to be on the retreat in Tamil Nadu, where it was wiped out in the May Lok Sabha election. "Jayalalithaa's absence from Tamil Nadu may favour the BJP as we can expand our base in the state," a BJP leader in Chennai told IANS on telephone. "We are looking to forge an alliance with smaller parties," he added. Tamil Nadu's BJP general secretary H. Raja was more forthright: "The next election in the state will be between the AIADMK and the BJP. "Our party has a bright future in Tamil Nadu," he said. "In the absence of Jayalalithaa, governance will not be that good, and any anti-incumbency will favour the BJP. "(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's popularity among youth is very high... We are going to expand in the state." Fighting in alliance with smaller Tamil parties and ranged against both the AIADMK and the DMK, the BJP surprised everyone in the Lok Sabha polls by winning one of the state's 39 seats. Another seat went to the PMK, a BJP ally. The remaining 37 were bagged by the Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK. The BJP-led alliance secured 18.5 percent of all votes in Tamil Nadu, and the BJP itself cornered 5.5 percent. While the AIADMK vote percentage was 44.3 percent, the DMK-led alliance got only eight percent votes more than the BJP grouping in the state, a factor which stunned political pundits. The 2014 showing for the BJP was the best in Tamil Nadu since 1998 when it won three Lok Sabha seats and in 1999 when it took four seats. On both occasions, the popularity of

1,350 in fray for Haryana polls, record women candidates

Chandigarh (IANS): With a record 109 women in the fray, 1,350 candidates will contest the Oct 15 assembly elections for 90 seats in Haryana, election department officials said Wednesday. With 168 withdrawals Wednesday, 1,350 candidates finally remain in the fray for the assembly polls. These include 1,241 male and 109 female candidates. Wednesday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations. "The ensuing elections to the Haryana Assembly will see record number of 109 women in the fray, the highest ever since the inception of Haryana in 1966. This distinction was earlier held by the 1996 assembly elections which witnessed 93 female contestants," Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Shrikant Walgad said here. Walgad said that the maximum number of six women candidates are in the race for the Ateli assembly constituency, whereas the maximum number of 31 male candidates are in the fray from the Bhiwani assembly constituency.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani tilted the scales -- just as Modi's appeal did this time. Just when everyone was predicting another AIADMK landslide in the 2016 assembly elections, a court in Bangalore Saturday jailed Jayalalithaa for four years and fined her Rs.100 crore for corruption. She was stripped of her membership of the Tamil Nadu assembly. A loyalist, O. Panneerselvam, took oath as chief minister Monday, in a near replay of what happened 13 years ago. It is Jayalalithaa's physical absence from a state where she commands a big popularity that makes the BJP feel the party will be able to do better visa-vis voters. But pundits admit that while middle class sensibilities on corruption might push them towards the BJP, the mass of rural and urban poor may not be ready to dump Jayalalithaa -- even

if she remains in jail. Those lonely days, BJP leaders assert, "The AIADMK is a natural ally for us. In any case, the BJP has never been are long gone. But we are not thinking about it at in the race for power in Tamil Nadu, In New Delhi, a BJP leader told IANS: present." where it relies on smaller or bigger Tamil parties while seeking votes. The BJP's predecessor Jana Sangh had no presence in Tamil Nadu as it was viewed as a "north Indian" and "Hindi" party. It was only the Ayodhya cam- JASBIR SINGH BADH paign that helped jsbIr isMG b`D the BJP to grow in the 1990s. U.S. Congressmen urge attorney general and education secretary to take steps to protect Sikh school kids

THIRTY U.S. Congressmen urge Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to take measures to protect Sikh school kids from harassment. The Congressmen wrote: “We write to direct your attention to the unusually high rates of school bullying endured by Sikh American school children. We are interested in working with your Departments to discuss ways in which the federal agencies can better protect Sikh and other school children from bias based

harassment. “According to a national report issued by The Sikh Coalition, the majority of Sikh children, just over 50%, endure school bullying. The rate of school bullying is even worse for turbaned Sikh children. Over two-thirds, or 67%, report that they are bullied in school. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 32% of all students ages 12 to 18 report that they are bullied in school. Turbaned Sikh children therefore experience bullying at more than double the national rate.

“It is our understanding that while Sikh children endure bullying at high rates, Sikh American parents and children file complaints of school bullying at relatively low rates with your respective civil rights offices. We hope that your agencies will increase targeted outreach to particularly vulnerable communities like the Sikh American community so that they fully utilize federal resources. In addition, it is our understanding that federal data on the school bullying of Sikh American school children does not

exist. In the absence of such data, diagnostic efforts are significantly undermined. We urge you to implement processes for collecting appropriate disaggregated data on bullying of all children. “We thank you for considering our request that your Departments devote more attention to the challenges of Sikh American children to pursue their education in a safe and welcoming learning environment. We look forward to working with you to address this serious issue.”

Indian soldiers' bravery in WW-I remembered in Sydney

New Delhi (IANS): The valour displayed by Indian soldiers in freeing Haifa, in what is now Israel, during World War-I in 1918 has been remembered in Australia. On Sep 23, 1918, Indian soldiers of two elite army units from Jodhpur and Mysore had liberated the port city of Haifa after a heroic battle with the Ottoman Turks. "The Indian horsemen armed with only spears and swords attacked and defeated the Ottoman army and its artillery on Mount Carmel. The action of the Indian troops has been vividly recorded in the official history of the

war," said Balesh Singh Dhankhar, president of Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party, Australia and national interfaith coordinator, Hindu Council of Australia on the occasion. Speaking to IANS over phone, Dhankar said the historical day was organised on Tuesday by the Hindu Council of Australia and New South Wales (NSW) Jewish Board Deputies, an umbrella organisation of all Jewish community organisations in NSW. Participating in the event, Jeremy Spinak, President, NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, said:

"Jews who migrated from middle east over 2000 years back were the first non-indigenous religious groups to settle in India...This is not beginning of new friendship, our friendship goes back centuries - this is a new chapter of close partnership in action. On this occasion, a book titled "India and Israel together for 2,000 Years" by V. Ravi Kumar was presented to Vic Alhadeff, CEO NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. He shared how Jews suffered discrimination almost everywhere but in India. "While Jews had to face

t Full-time

discrimination in all countries including UK, Russia, Germany and Italy, they never faced it in India," said Alhadeff. "Jews in india have flourished since they migrated and are in senior positions in army, government, and Bollywood." According to Haifa Historical Society's research, a large number of Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives in this region during the First World War and nearly 900 were cremated or are buried in cemeteries across Israel. Processed products should reach common man: Minister

Ludhiana (IANS): Union Food Processing Industry Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal Friday said that processed products should not be limited to elite sections only but should be in the reach of the common man as well. Badal said that food wastage played a very important role in inflation. "Due to wastage, market availability declines and it directly leads to inflation. So if we control wastage by taking help of food processing industry, we can control inflation. I am going to Ahmedabad tomorrow (Saturday) where we would study the model adopted by Amul," she said. Addressing participants during a day-long national seminar on "Augmenting Processing and Shelf-Life of Perishable Food Products", organised by the National

Productivity Council (NPC), at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here Friday, Badal stressed the need to check wastage in agriculture sector, which is estimated at over Rs.44,000 crore and will also help in curbing inflation. "Wastage can be reduced primarily if the farmers take advantage of food processing industry. Food processed is food saved. The saved food should be processed and made available at affordable prices to the common man," she said. She said that the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) would be opening two centres in Bathinda and Ludhiana where all kinds of crops would be processed. Badal said that her ministry would concentrate on creating primary collection centres close to the food production areas to bring in efficiency in

food processing and reduce wastages. She said that according to a study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) in 2010, 18 percent of the total produce gets wasted. "To achieve efficiency, the ministry would create an enabling environment including creating refrigeration facilities at all levels," she said. The minister said that farmers can themselves set up small food processing units to process their own produce at their home itself. "My aim is that we come up with such a scheme where a farmer and his family, especially youth, would be involved in all stages, right from sowing to processing to marketing of a particular product. And we are already working on it so that our farmers can become self reliant," she added.

As a result, teachers in these colleges have not been given salaries for months. Rakhra told officers of

Whether it's going for a family bike ride, spending hours typing on the computer, or heading out for a morning jog, there are endless things on our to-do lists and activities we want to tackle. But, what happens when our body hits a speed bump?

With an active lifestyle, occasional aches and pains are to be expected. However, when it seems like a different kind of pain, it could be our body trying to tell us that something isn't normal. Some of these pain symptoms may cause the affected joints to become stiff in the morning, but the stiffness usually only lasts about 15-20 minutes, improving with

be ignored. Arthritis affects one in six Canadian adults, and it can start earlier than you'd think. In fact, 56 per cent of Canadians with arthritis are under age 65. Osteoarthritis is the most common type and it occurs when natural “wear and tear” causes our bones to rub against each other, leading to pain, inflammation, and stiffness. activity. As the day progresses, however, and joints are used more, the pain and discomfort can get worse. What people might not realize is that pain can be a sign of something more, and something that shouldn't

“It's important Canadians don't overlook pain in their joints because often it is something they don't have to live with as it can be managed,” says Dr. Dr. Ted Jablonski, family physician. “In terms of handling mild to moderate osteoarthritis, physical

activity is important because it protects joints by strengthening the muscles around them. Eating a healthy diet is also key since excess weight can put more stress on joints. Non-prescription pain relievers can be very useful in the management of arthritic symptoms. New Advil Arthritis Pain® is an effective way to get fast relief of osteoarthritis as it targets the pain at the site of inflammation.” If you are experiencing regular joint pain and suspect you might have osteoarthritis, speak with your doctor to get a formal diagnosis and find the appropriate management program.

Today, research shows that traditional methods of teaching won't cut it for parents who say their children learn best through experience. A recent study conducted by Leger Marketing shows that 63 per cent of parents feel young children under the age of five learn best through hands-on involvement that includes touching, feeling, or doing. “An early childhood educator's approach recognizes the uniqueness of each individual child in the context of the family and community and it focuses on learning through play,” explains Melanie Dixon, Director of Professional Practice at the College of Early Childhood Educators.

The survey revealed that only six per cent of parents feel a strict curriculum in school or child care is important to their child's learning, and less than one per cent feel their child learns best from self-study.

Although learning through play looks like fun and games, in reality the work of a registered early childhood educator (RECE) involves assessment of early learning and care programs and the children in them, plus communication with families about children's intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth.

the police team, was also arrested. They have been booked for murder. The two youths, both brothers in their 20s, were allegedly killed in a gunfight with police in Jamalpur area of Ludhiana district Saturday morning. Both of them - Harinder Singh and Jatinder Singh - were accused in an earlier attemptto-murder case. The incident occurred when police entered a house where the victims were staying. A scuffle broke out between them and the police team and shots were fired, said senior police officers in Ludhiana. The brothers were killed in the shootout. "On [September 27], a police party of police station Machhiwara, District Khanna, raided a dwelling unit at Jamalpur, Ludhiana. The party was accompanied by one Gurjit Singh. Two persons, namely Harinder Singh and Jatinder Singh, both sons of Satpal Singh, were killed. A

murder case was registered. Members of the police party Constable Yadwinder Singh, Ajit Singh and Baldev Singh (both home guards), along with Gurjit Singh, were arrested," ADGP Tiwari said. "Inspector Manjinder Singh, SHO PS Machhiwara, attempted to shield the police officials of Police District Khanna. He gave a wrong version of the incident to his superior officers and made false entries in the Daily Diary Register of the Police Station. He has been dismissed from service under Article 311(2) of the Constitution," a police report said. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had earlier in the day set up a highlevel committee to probe the killing of two youths in police firing in Ludhiana district Saturday. Badal has asked the committee, comprising Additional Director General of Police, Crime, V.K. Bhawra and State

Narcotics Bureau director Ishwar Singh, to probe the entire incident and submit the report within 15 days. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal told media in Muktsar that a special investigation team has been constituted to conduct fair investigation into the incident. He said that no one would be spared. But the opposition Congress Monday, through a party resolution, sought the resignation of the deputy chief minister, who is also the state home minister. Alleging the involvement of an Akali Dal leader from the Ludhiana area, the party demanded a time-bound high-level probe by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Congress, which described the incident as "cold-blooded killing of two brothers", said that the probe will expose the politicianpolice nexus in Punjab.

Delhi High Court blocks 72 websites from streaming 'Bang Bang' THE Delhi High Court Tuesday directed various internet and telecom service providers to block access to 72 websites hosting the yet-to-be released Hrithik Roshan starer "Bang Bang". Justice Manmohan Singh said the court is totally against the piracy of copyrighted material, including movies, and "it is almost equivalent to duplicating currencies". "The websites' owners are committing piracy and collecting illegal profits, who are peeping behind the curtain and laughing at the producers of the movies. If this is not

fraud what else? In fact, piracy in copyright cases is a curse to wellestablished system of the country and it should be curbed and dealt with with iron hands," the court said. Producers of Bollywood film "Bang Bang" had moved the high court seeking to block nearly 72 websites that may allow online access to the film. The film also stars Katrina Kaif, and is scheduled to be released Friday. Fox Star Studios has sought a blanket injunction against these websites and also hauled service

providers in its suit. The plea said that every day multiple websites provide access to illegal content by communicating films to public without authorization of the rightful owner, adding that this interferes with "theatrical exploitation of film". The producers termed the websites as "rogue" and accused them of supporting and hosting streaming of movies and collecting illegal profits by providing video on demand. (IANS)

THE young and versatile actress Alia Bhatt has turned designer for a line titled 'Alia' for an online shopping portal. She says her love for fashion is courtesy filmmaker Karan Johar. Alia says she was not much of a fashionista initially, but during the shooting for "Student of The Year", which saw her in the role of a brand-conscious style diva, she started loving the world of fashion. "I didn't really understand clothes while I was overweight. When I was auditioning for 'Student...', I lost weight and because my character Shanaya was so into dressing up and fashion...because of that I kind of got into loving fashion," the 21-year-old said here. "Basically, Karan (Johar) has a great influence on that and he has a great fashion sense. He tells me when I am wrongly dressed and when I am doing good," added the actress, whose line will be available on Jabong. Nero/Bianco theme. The Fiat 500 and 500c by Gucci Edition models feature several exclusive design elements that highlight the Cinquecento's iconic style. A signature Gucci Verde/Rosso/Verde (green/red/green) web stripe runs along the entire body side perimeter on the Fiat 500 by Gucci or across the length of the power-retractable cloth top on the Fiat 500c by Gucci model. Chrome cursive "Gucci" signatures complete the door frames and hatchback, complementing the bright (Gucci Nero) or satin (Gucci Bianco) chromeaccented exterior mirrors, door handles and hood spear. Adding to the vehicle's sculpted fenders are uniquely designed, retro-inspired 15inch aluminum wheels colourkeyed to the Gucci Nero or Gucci Bianco exterior paint. For even more sophistication, the wheel design includes center caps with interlocking "GG" hubcaps and brake pads lacquered in signature Gucci Verde (green). On the wave of the remarkable interest attracted by "500 by Gucci" Fiat and Gucci introduce the "500C by Gucci", a cabriolet version once again customized by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini in collaboration with the Centro Stile Fiat. All the exclusivity of the "500 by Gucci" - attention to detail, feeling of elegance and style - is enhanced in this new version, and made even more attractive by the innovative electric soft top for opening a "window onto the sky". The new convertible version will be available in two sophisticated body colors: white with matte chrome-plated elements and glossy black with shiny chrome-plated accents. For both, the soft top is black with the characteristic greenred-green Gucci web pattern printed lengthwise (the same graphic pattern is sported on the side of the car). Furthermore, the side pillars of the saloon version are maintained and with its special sliding electric top the Fiat "500C by Gucci" can be enjoyed all year round. No pricing yes for the convertible, however, the Fiat 500 by Gucci Edition has a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $24,895.

New 2015 Ford F150 aims to take the big truck crown

Ford introduces the all-new Ford F-150, the reinvention of America’s favorite truck. Ford say the new icon truck is the toughest, smartest and most capable F150 ever – setting the standard for the future of trucks. Both the exterior and interior design of Ford F-150 reflect decades of listening to customers and understanding their occupational and recreational needs. The exterior is characterized by a new shape that suggests capability, with a wider Built Ford Tough stance, prominent wheel arches and chiseled grille. Several groundbreaking new productivity features debut in the all-new F150, including many class-exclusives. They include: 360-degree camera view, using exterior cameras to create a bird’s-eye view of the truck to help the driver park, maneuver in tight spots and navigate down narrow roads and trails, Integrated loading ramps, which enable easy loading of ATVs, motorcycles and mowers, BoxLink™, which is a combination of metal brackets and custom cleats used to secure a variety of accessories in the cargo box, from ramps to storage bins to bed dividers, LED headlamps and tail lamps, which provide excellent nighttime visibility, Trailer hitch assist, a new rear view camera feature that adds a dynamic line based on steering wheel angle in the display to help customers line up truck and trailer without requiring a spotter or having to get out of the vehicle, Remote tailgate, allowing for the tailgate to be locked, unlocked and released with the key fob – eliminating manual locking and increasing convenience and security. In addition there the tailgate is also damped, dropping down, hands-free, to a flat position when opened, Highwattage power outlets (400 watts, 110 volts) in the cab, allowing drivers to easily charge corded tools, battery chargers or mobile devices on-site or while driving, LED spotlights on side view mirrors, which provide powerful, durable and bright lighting around the truck exterior, Latest EcoBoost® technology in an all-new, even more efficient 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine that features extremely high output and lightweight design, Next-generation tailgate step, which is now fully integrated inside the tailgate and virtually invisible when not in use A range of four engines provides more power to meet almost any customer need. A new 2.7liter EcoBoost with standard Auto StartStop and a 3.5-liter V6 engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing join the proven 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine features a lightweight, compact design to deliver the same power as some mid-range V8s. Auto Start-Stop technology helps save fuel. Unlike start-stop solutions in other vehicles, this technology – specially tuned for truck customers – shuts off the engine to save fuel when the vehicle is stopped, except when towing

or in four-wheel drive. The engine restarts in milliseconds when the brake is

released. Ford F-150 trucks equipped with EcoBoost engines also will benefit from standard Active Grille Shutters.

2015 NISSAN MICRA

Active Grille Shutters stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during low-speed stop-and-go driving or while working in hot weather. They automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag at cruisingspeed. Comfort, utility and refinement define the truck’s interior. Ergonomically optimized seating for the front row positions enhances comfort, while extending legroom for rear passengers. Buttons and controls are optimized so they can be operated while wearing work gloves. Storage options include laptop stowage in the center console, as well as quick storage solutions. When it goes on sale soon, the all-new Ford F-150 will aim to be the top dog once more. Dogs. Prices will be announced shortly .

Hilfiger fond of Bollywood films, incredible Sonam Kapoor

AMERICAN designer Tommy Hilfiger loves to watch Bollywood movies and appreciates the growing fashion quotient in Hindi movies. His favourite among the stars is stylish Sonam Kapoor. "I have followed Bollywood films and enjoyed the complete aura of fashionably

dressed actors dancing around the trees," the designer, who was here to celebrate 10 years of his brand in the country, told IANS in an interview. When asked if he follows any particular actor or actress in the tinsel town, he was quick to name Sonam. "Sonam Kapoor is

amazing. She is beautiful, smart and incredible," said the man, who has spent 30 years in the fashion industry creating new trends. Hilfiger, who has made a niche clientele with his cool, casual, relaxed and youthful designs, had invited the "Khoobsurat" actress to be part of his

brand's celebration in the capital. On the occasion, the designer launched two limited-edition pieces - a shawl for women and traditional bandi for men. The iconic Indian garments were reinterpreted with Hilfiger’s signature preppy spirit. (IANS)

'Haider' best film of my career: Shahid Kapoor

SHAHID Kapoor has given one of the biggest hits of his career with Vishal Bhardwaj's "Kaminey" and now the duo has teamed up again for "Haider", which the actor says is the best film of his career so far. "I can proudly say 'Haider' is the best film of my career. This film has everything that I haven't done before. I have pinned my hopes on this film," Shahid told reporters in a group interview. Released in 2009, "Kaminey" starred Shahid in a double role and he won accolades for his

performance from all quarters. "Haider" is set against the unrest in the Kashmir Valley and revolves around a guy called Haider who wants to avenge his father's death. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet", the film also stars Shraddha Kapoor. "Some people like violence, some like romance but I know people will connect emotionally with 'Haider'," said the 33year-old. Shahid says he believes in doing good work without caring much about box office col-

lection or any award. "Everyone tells me that this film ('Haider') will win the National Award but I am not thinking about it. Earlier, I would think about box-office collections but now I enjoy my work. If we win a National Award, it will be good for us. But if we don't, I will still be happy that I did this film," he said. The actor also has good words to share about Bhardwaj. "Vishal Bhardwaj is a real superstar. He presents each film differently. For instance

'Maqbool', 'Kaminey' or '7 Khoon Maaf'. He also makes strong women-centric movies. Vishal and I share a bonding,"

said Shahid. "Haider" is slated for Oct 2 release. (IANS)

Ill-health keeps Lata away from 85th birthday celebration

LEGENDARY singer Lata Mangeshkar, who turned 85 Sunday, skipped her birthday celebrations as she was not well. She was connected live on a telephone where she apologized for not making it to the event due to her ill-health.

Lata said she was feeling sorry for cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar who had come all the way to felicitate her. Since Lata couldn't make it to the event, her sister Usha Mangeshkar was felicitated on her behalf instead.

Tendulkar had agreed to be the chief guest at the event, which was organized by music events organization Hridayesh Arts at the Shanmukhananda Auditorium, King's Circle here. The occasion was

momentous as Hridaynath Mangeshkar, younger brother of Lata, has also has completed 60 years of his music career. Starting her career in 1943 at the age of 13 with the song "Mata ek sapoot ki duniya badal de tu" for Marathi film

"Gajaabhaau", Lata, who is called the Nightingale of India, went on to record songs for more than 1,000 films in 36 languages. She has sung classical to romantic numbers to ghazals to bhajans, thus maintaining a variety in her discography, which

has evergreen lilting melodies like "Aaja re pardesi", "Kahi deep jale kahi dil", "Beeti na bitaai raina", "Tere bina zindagi se", "Naino mein badra", "Chalte chalte" and "Yaara sili silli". (IANS)

India clinch women's hockey bronze at Asiad

Incheon, South Korea (IANS): The Indian women's hockey team put on a spectacular performance to defeat Japan 2-1 and claim the bronze medal at the 17th Asian Games here Wednesday. In a hard-fought playoff, India took an early lead through a successful penalty corner conversion by Jaspreet Kaur in the 23rd minute, following a dry first quarter at

the Soenhak Hockey Stadium. Japan squeezed in their first goal from Shibata Akane's stick in the 41st minute to level the score at 1-1. India’s craving for more goals bore fruit when Vandana Katariya, in the very next minute, gave a simple finish to a nonpossessed ball in the 42nd minute to once again give the 1982 New

Delhi champions the lead. The last quarter was a challenging session as both teams played brilliantly but struggled to sneak in goals. Japan tried to create several opportunities but India goalkeeper Savita and the defence held the fort and did not allow them to convert. “The team played exceptionally well as per

the strategies and I am extremely happy that we have finished with a bronze. The overall performance of the team was much better this time as compared to the Commonwealth Games,” India coach Neil Hawgood said.

Praising the team, captain Ritu Rani said: “I am really happy with the way the girls played. It is through the collective efforts of the whole team that we have won the bronze. I encourage the girls and hope the team keeps up the positive spir-

it so that we can show a better performance here on.” India had won the gold in New Delhi in 1982, the silver in Bangkok in 1998 and bronzes at Seoul in 1986 and at Doha in 2006. The team will return home Friday.

Asian Games: Shocked Sarita refuses to wear medal

Incheon (IANS): Indian boxer Sarita Devi Wednesday refused to wear her bronze medal and left it at the podium protesting against her controversial defeat to South Korean Jina Park in the semifinal of the 17th Asian Games. A day after India's protest was rejected, an inconsolable Sarita, accepted the medal after much persuasion but refused to wear it round her neck. Later she left the medal at the podium as the spectators at the Seonhak Gymnasium looked stunned. The medal is now in the custody of the organisers but Sarita is staring at a possible ban from the AIBA international body. A day after India's protest was rejected, Sarita was seen crying away on the podium even as her fellow bronze medallist Vietnam's

Thi Duyen Luu tried to comfort her. It reminded many of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw away his bronze medal on the match in protest following a highly controversial semi-final defeat. Abrahamian was also banned for two years and fined by world body FILA for his action. During the medal ceremony here, Sarita handed over her medal to Park before giving her a hug and left the ceremony. A visibly rattled Park left the medal on the podium before making her exit. Sarita defended her action saying otherwise it would have stayed in her mind for the rest of her career. "It's not that I did not want to accept the medal. I accepted it and then gave it

back to the Koreans. I had to do this to continue with my boxing career or the memory of this incident would have stayed on in my mind. I would now go back and hug my infant child," she said. The Manipuri boxer, who was ready for any consequences of her actions, also blasted the Indian officials for their apathy. "I am prepared for any consequences. Not one Indian official came to us and consoled or even spoke to us," she said. The former World Champion boxer Tuesday was completely shocked after she lost the lightweight (60kg) semi-final to Park, who ended up as the silver medallist. While judges surprisingly declared the South Korean as the winner, Sarita was clearly the better of the two boxers.

I have moved out of Bhatt camp, it's just that at present I am concentrating on direction," Shagufta told IANS. Once a bar dancer, Shagufta started her career with Mahesh Bhatt by assisting him on movies such as "Tadipar" and "Sir", but later she turned to scriptwriting and penned scripts for Bhatts' hits like "Raaz 2" and "Murder 2." "It's just that the script I had did not fit the Vishesh Films and neither have I approached Mahesh Bhatt or Mukesh Bhatt with this script. I am friendlier with Pooja Bhatt, so I went to her with the script," Shagufta said. "I have just finished writing the dialogues of 'Humari Adhuri Kahaani'. Then how can one say I have moved out of Bhatt camp? In fact, I will be writing one more

script for Mohit Suri after I finish my film. Vishesh Films already has a bunch of directors, so I didn't approach them with my script," she said. Tentatively titled "Rose", Shagufta's directorial debut will be produced by Pooja Bhatt and is expected to go on the floors by November. Talking about her directorial venture, she said: "It's a love story between Richa Chadda and Ali Fazal. They have a love marriage and then one incident just changes their life. The girl becomes a victim of a gang rape, which leaves their marriage completely devastated. I will start shooting for the film from November, which will be widely shot in Mumbai and Delhi." (IANS)

Cast of 'Angry Birds' movie unveiled

Los Angeles, IANS: The likes of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and Peter Dinklage have given the voiceover in the animated film adaptation of popular game "Angry Birds". The names of actors, who have lent their voice for various characters in the movie, was unveiled in a unique manner. The fans had to unlock the cast in the game itself by slinging one billion birds in 48 hours. Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph are also part of the main cast. In the game, angry but cute little birds fight it out with pigs who have stolen their eggs. However, it is still unclear what all the filmmakers will pick up from the game as the plot is still shrouded in secrecy. "Horrible Bosses" fame actor Sudeikis will lead the cast as Red, a bird with a temper problem, accompanied with Gad as speedy Chuck, and McBride as the volatile Bomb. "Game of Thrones" actor Dinklage will bring the character of legendary Mighty Eagle alive on screen. And on the pork side will be actor Hader. Actress Rudolph will play Matilda. Co-directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis and co-produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder, the film will debut in US July 1, 2016. "I'm extremely proud of the cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they're surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent these are some of the funniest people out there today, and we're thrilled to have them all on board," Cohen said in a statement. The film will be distributed globally by Sony Pictures.

Gandolfini of The Sopranos fame. Both men wind up in all sorts of upheaval as a bizarre group of tough guys

infringe on their livelihoods. Somewhat slow at times the intense pressure of the family rela-

tionships comes to a head with rather unpredictable results. There is a real texture to the griminess of the whole illegal

trade revolving around this one particular watering hole and when the violence does come it grabs you. Forget about humour here. The only real warmth comes from a fleeting woman named Nadia who's made memorable by the compelling brooding presence of Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Director Michael Roskam pulls off a well executed drama of some low life criminals that is a fitting departure for the always affable James Gandolfini who will be sorely missed.

Garlic is one of the world’s oldest medicines and is an incredibly potent spice that can ward off a variety of illnesses and diseases. It has amazingly high levels of vitamins and minerals including vitamin C and B-6 and minerals such as selenium, calcium, copper, and iron. Garlic also contains very strong

antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-cancer, and anti-viral properties. One raw crushed clove of garlic contains the antibiotic equivalent of 100,000 units of penicillin and has been proven to be more effective than both penicillin and tetracycline in suppressing certain types of disease carrying agents. Garlic contains a

compound called allicin which has been shown to help significantly lower cholesterol and blood pressure by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme within the liver cells and blocking platelet clot formation in the blood vessels. Unimpressive Indian wrestlers fail to win medal

Incheon, South Korea (IANS): Indian grecoroman wrestlers had a poor day in office as all four - Gurpreet Singh, Manoj Kumar, Sandeep Yadav and Dharmender Dalal - were knocked out of their respective

weight categories at the 17th Asian Games here Wednesday. Dharmender started the losing trend with a 0-4 verdict to Iran's Bashir Babajanzadeh in the 130 kg 1/8 final at the Dowon Gymnasium.

The Iranian raced to whopping 8-0 lead in the first period and was declared the winner on the basis of greater superiority with the Indian failing to score a point. Gurpreet then gave Indians some hope by

winning his 75 kg 1/8 final against Qatar's Bakhit Sharif Badr 4-0 on the basis of greater superiority, building up a massive 10-0 lead inside the first quarter. But it proved to be a false dawn as he went down 1-3 in the last-eight match against Iran's

Payam Bouyeri on technical points, securing only two points as against seven by his opponent. South Korea's Hyeonwoo Kim won gold in the category, beating Japan's Takehiro Kanakubo 3-0 on technical points. In 66 kg, Sandeep was

beaten 0-4 by Tajikistan's Khusrav Obloberdiev. The Indian conceded a lead of 0-10 in the first quarter for the match to be stopped and awarded to the Tajik wrestler. Manoj capped off India's disappointment, bowing 0-3 to China's Fei Peng on technical points.

South Korea turn focus to cricket Incheon, South Korea (IANS): This is only the second time cricket is being held at the Asian Games and some countries like South Korea are fielding teams for the first time. The president of the Korean Cricket Association Kim Seungchul said many of the players have been recruited from the Dragons cricket club at S u n g k y u n k w a n University.

"I actually established the cricketing club in our school in 2001. I also tried to include the sport as an after school activity and put cricket as one of the general physical education subjects. And in 2011, I established the Korean Cricket Association (KCA) to drive the inclusion of the Korean team at the Games," Kim was quoted as saying by The Korean Herald. "In 2012, we went on a

recruitment drive for national team members and although they had short-term training period, they have enthusiasm and confidence." Cricket is virtually unheard of in South Korea but there hasn’t been any shortage of volunteers to help at these Asian Games. They have come from the small but enthusiastic local cricketing circle which also includes expat players.

So what do you do when you have North America’s best-selling car for the last twelve years? You find ways to make it even better. That’s exactly what Toyota did with the introduction of the new 2015 Camry. Toyota

stripped it down to its chassis and rebuilt it from the ground up, raising the bar yet again in the ultra-competitive mid-size sedan segment. "Canadians asked us for more style, comfort and per-

formance - and with the 2015 Toyota Camry they get all of that plus the durability, quality and value that have made it a favourite with drivers from coast to coast," said Larry Hutchinson, Vice President at Toyota Canada

Inc. "This is the new Camry from the new Toyota." Toyota designers and engineers re-imagined nearly every exterior surface of the car. Only the roof remains unchanged. The new, upscale interior features premium, soft-touch materials throughout the spacious cabin. Advanced instrumentation with intuitive controls helps keep the driver’s eyes safely on the road ahead. Underneath the striking new exterior, the chassis and body structure are bolstered with additional spot welds, enhancing rigidity for better ride quality. A retuned suspension takes the Camry’s handling to a whole new level of responsiveness. Two new grades, the sporty and luxurious XSE and the eco-fun Hybrid SE, join the well-equipped entry LE and the premium XLE grade, giving customers more choice than ever The interior of the new Camry is more refined than ever with premium materi-

als, roomier feel and improved amenities. The centre stack features a hightech, upscale look that smoothly integrates with the console. The new enclosed bin in front of the shifter now offers 12v, USB and a segment-first, available wireless charging system for select smart phones. The 2015 Camry’s cockpit offers intuitive topflight in-car electronics and displays that help reduce driver stress and distraction. The instrument panel features a new 4.2-inch TFT screen nestled between the three-dimensional Optitron gauges on the SE, XLE and XSE models. The Hybrid SE’s vehicle stability control system has been retuned for smoother intervention and a more natural driving feel. All Toyota vehicles come standard with the STAR Safety System. In addition, Camry will offer safetyfocused driver aids including Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The new 2015 Camry will arrive in dealerships this fall.

Chrysler Canada - All-new Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe is long awaited

Marking the Italian brand’s highly anticipated return to North America, the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C coupe made its debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show debut – a midengine design inspired by the brand’s legendary racing history, state-of-the-art carbon fibre monocoque and all-aluminum turbocharged engine influenced by Formula 1, and advanced technological solutions, all to deliver supercarlevel performance and driving exhilaration. For the Alfa Romeo brand, the 4C represents the essential sportiness embedded in the brand’s D.N.A.: Italian style, performance and technical excellence, for maximum driving pleasure. The “4C” name recalls Alfa Romeo's great sporting tradition: the acronyms 8C and 6C in the 1930s and 1940s distinguished racing and road cars fitted with powerful eight and six cylinder engines. The Alfa Romeo 4C model’s designation continues this tradition with the latest all-aluminum 1750 cc Turbocharged I4 engine. The inspiration for the Alfa Romeo 4C dates back to the 1967 33 Stradale, the homologated version of the racing Type 33, which is considered one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Like the 33 Stradale

that combined extreme mechanical and functional requirements with undeniable Alfa Romeo style and performance – the Alfa Romeo 4C coupe shares its body forms and follows this performance tradition with an undoubtedly Italian-styled composite body “clothing,” a state-of-the-art carbon fibre monocoque and aluminum structure, and a high-performance turbocharged engine. With a purpose-built cockpit inspired by the legendary 1967 33 Stradale, entering the interior of the Alfa Romeo 4C means entering a world derived from motorsport – only essential components for performance are integrated. Two composite-framed sport seats, thermoformed dashboard and exposed carbon fibre monocoque highlight the coupe’s technological uniqueness. Furthermore, a driver-oriented cockpit with flat-bottom performance steering wheel with paddleshift controls and aluminum pedals speak to the brand’s racing spirit. Emphasizing the Alfa Romeo 4C’s advanced technology and focus on lightweight technical solutions is a 7-inch full-colour customizable instrument cluster that displays simple, high-impact graphics to keep the driver focused on the road, or track

ahead. To create the ultra-lightweight architecture needed for maximum performance and dynamic efficiency, Alfa Romeo 4C engineers looked to Formula 1 and only the most advanced supercars for state-of-the-art materials. The result is a monocoque made entirely of carbon fibre that delivers extraordinary stiffness and strength. Attached to the Alfa Romeo 4C’s exotic monocoque are front and rear cell structures, roof reinforcements and an engine-mounting frame made from lightweight aluminum. The engine is the beating heart of any Alfa Romeo, and for the 4C, it beats to an allnew 1750 cc, direct-injection, 237 horsepower aluminum engine. To ensure exceptional performance and drivability on the racetrack or city streets, this new engine features cutting-edge technical solutions, including direct-injection, intercooler, dual (intake and exhaust) continuous variablevalve timing (VVT), eight counterweights, and intake and exhaust systems optimized for Alfa Romeo 4C’s mid-engine layout. A new generation turbocharger features a pulseconverter exhaust manifold to exploit pressure waves and boost torque at low-engine speeds. A waste gate valve adjusts turbo pressure and improves the engine’s efficiency. Advanced scavenging technology enables the Alfa Romeo 4C to maximize torque at low engine speeds and deliver more response to driver input by increasing combustion efficiency and turbine

speed, all while eliminating turbo lag. As a result, torque delivery is instantaneous, with a peak of 258 lb.-ft.; 80 per cent of which is available at only 1,700 rpm. Teamed to the all-aluminum engine is a paddleshifting Alfa Romeo Twin Clutch Transmission (TCT),

which has been specifically tuned for the Alfa Romeo 4C. With its uniquely calibrated software that adjusts with the Alfa Romeo D.N.A. system, the Alfa Romeo TCT’s gearshifts are designed to become most aggressive in the Dynamic and Race modes. The Alfa Romeo TCT system also integrates a

“Launch Control” mode delivering the utmost acceleration possible as soon as the driver releases the brakes. For “Alfisti” in North America, a special 2015 model-year only Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition will be made available this June.

Children can learn to control their powerful sweets cravings Children can learn to control their powerful sweets cravings: study Food cravings According to new research, concentrating on the visual aspects of food and ignoring how it might taste could lead to children developing a sense of self-discipline when it comes to healthy eating. For children, the lure of cookies and fast food is distinctly more powerful than for adolescents and adults, although children's cognitive wiring is well suited to train such cravings, according to researchers hailing principally from Columbia University. "These findings are important because they suggest that we may have another tool in our toolbox to combat childhood obesity," says psychological scientist and lead researcher Jennifer A. Silvers, a post-doctoral fellow at Columbia University in the laboratory of Professor Kevin Ochsner. Indeed, the study is unique because other research in the area has pointed the finger at advertising and the ready availability of sweets and highfat foods, focusing more on an environment that is unlikely to change rather than asking if the individual child is capable

of overcoming the influence. The brain can be trained to enjoy healthy food, study suggests "Such environmental interventions are clearly important, but sugary sweets and tempting treats cannot always be avoided," says Silvers. "If children as young as 6 can learn to use a cognitive strategy after just a few minutes of training, that has huge implications for interventions."

Silvers and her colleagues worked with 105 young people between the ages of six and 23, and took MRI scans of their brains while showing them images of various unhealthy alimentary indulgences. The rest of the time, they told their subjects to consider the food far away and to focus on its visual appearance pertaining to shape and color rather than imagining the taste.

WANTED

CRIME STOPPERS GREATER VANCOUVER

After gauging the participants' levels of cravings, researchers concluded that the visual focalization in which they were instructed not to consider the potential taste reduced cravings by 16 percent, indicating that it could be a cognitive strategy for self-discipline. Analysis of the brain scans indicated that children's cravings in general were more powerful, which is potentially linked to a less-developed prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for self-control. Knowing that childhood is the time at which the prefrontal cortex takes shape and that self-control can be trained, researchers are enthusiastic about their discovery and aren't hesitating to test it in the classroom. "We believe this research has implications for a wide range of people, from basic scientists who are interested in how reward processing changes across the lifespan, to obesity researchers looking to devise interventions to curb childhood obesity, to parents and pediatricians trying to raise healthier and happier kids," says Silvers.

tainment system, proximity key remote entry system with pushbutton ignition, leather-wrapped multifunctional steering wheel, HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) input, and power moonroof. Along with the EX and above models, features include: automatic climate control with air-filtration, speed-sensing variable intermittent wipers, and tweeters added to the audio system, HondaLink Assist automatic emergency response system, and Siri Eyes Free compatibility. The 2014 Honda Civic Touring adds a number of class-leading features, including Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, rearview camera, heated front seats, colour i-MID display, USB/iPod® interface, text message function, steering wheel audio con-

trols, exterior temperaturegauge and a sliding finished centre armrest. New features include theexcellent Display Audio System with Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with voice recognition 3 now including a multi-view rearview camera. One very impressive new safety feature of note is the Honda “LaneWatch” blind spot display that hard to see traffic around the car using a camera and is standard on Civic sedans in EX, Touring and Si trim lines. On the safety front, as standard ABS-enhanced brakes, traction and stability control, plus a full complement of standard dualstage, multiple-threshold front airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)4 with traction control, and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle help keep occu-

pants and other street users safer. The Honda Touring price with all these extras come is not unreasonable – in fact downright impressive at $24,200, plus $1,495 in freight and pre-delivery fee. Settling in to the Honda Civic Touring, the comfortable leather seats proved good support and the roomy cabin has ample headroom for tall drivers and front and rear passengers. The rear quarters can seat two large adults, or three regular sized adult or teenage kids with no issues. The rear roof does not slope down so much it comprises and crushes on rear headroom severely. The Civics trunk stores 353 litres of cargo and the rear seats split 60/40 for practicality and access. On the road, the Civic Touring offers a decent enough ride via its independent front strut and multi-link rear suspension which soaks up bumps and potholes without too much harshness intruding into the cabin. The electric powerassisted rack-and-pinion is also responsive with good linear feedback. The 1.8 liter four- cylinder engine delivers 143 horsepower via the CVT. CVTs have got a bit of a bad rap in the past for their slowness; however the Honda unit is smooth and responsive and offers

the feeling and quickness of a conventional automatic transmission via the Sport mode setting. Acceleration is good and the Civic feels safe, comfortable and relaxing to drive. The brakes are also good with decent feel and pedal modulation. One thing I really like isCivics optional “LaneWatch” display camera hidden within the door mirror's post. It handily alerts the driver of hidden traffic in the right hand right-side blind spot on the infotainment screen. Kudos to Honda for offering such technology on compact cars at an affordable price as far as options goes. The CVT provides the Civic with some impressive fuel economy figures. The Transport Canada EnerGuide rates the Civic at 6.7 L/100km in the city, 5.0 on the highway, and 6.0 combined. No much to complain about to be honest. The Touring model does add to the base Civic price a bit, but the extra features and luxury will be appreciated for many years as you hang onto the car as most buyers of Honda Civics do. Still a bargain at the price that twill become like a member of the family. Well recommended. 2014 Honda Touring sedan. from $24,200
