High-powered diplomacy for Modi government in September
GUARANTEED Absolute Lowest Prices ! www.dream-carpets.net
New Delhi (IANS): September is set to be a very busy foreign policy month for the Narendra Modi government, with five high-priority visits - incoming and outgoing - on the anvil, including President Pranab Mukherjee's visit to Vietnam -- his first abroad under the new dispensation. The beginning of the month will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking off to Japan for the annual bilateral meeting, during which the civil nuclear talks will be very much on the table. The prime minister heads to the US at the end of the month for his summit meeting with President Barack Obama. Before he embarks for the US, India will have two important foreign guests - Chinese President Xi Jinping in the middle of the month and before that Australian Prime Minister Tony Abott. In between these, President Mukherjee travels to Vietnam, taking forward the Modi government's policy of connecting with the immediate and extended neighbourhood. Ahead of the president's visit, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will visit Vietnam by August-end to lay the groundwork for the presidential visit. Vietnam's most powerful leader Nguyen Phu Trong, general s e c r e t a r y o f t h e Vi e t n a m Communist Party, was in India on a

state visit last November during which he had invited India to look for oil and gas in the South China Sea. Earlier this month, an Indian warship took part in exercises with the Vietnamese navy in the tense waters of the South China Sea whose sovereignty is claimed by China. A naval flare-up between the two countries in the disputed waters led to riots in Vietnam, which saw many Chinese-owned factories attacked and Chinese nationals being killed. India had voiced concern over the South China Sea tensions and stressed that "freedom of navigation in the South China Sea should not be impeded" and urged for cooperation to ensure the "security of sea-lanes and strengthening of maritime security". Ironically, the Chinese president will be in New Delhi just after
President Mukherjee returns from Vietnam. During Tony Abbott's visit, India and Australia are likely to ink the civil nuclear agreement, for which negotiations are complete. Inking of the agreement will pave the way for uranium imports from Australia, making it one of India's top strategic partners. Abbott is scheduled to visit India Sep 3, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his first visit to Japan. Modi is scheduled to visit Australia for the G-20 summit in November. India is also keen to ink the civil nuclear deal with Japan. In her bilateral meeting with her Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in Myanmar, Sushma Swaraj had conveyed that India is "very keen" to conclude negotiations on the bilateral civil nuclear deal.

New Delhi (IANS): Senior advocate H.S. Phoolka Sunday questioned why former prime minister Manmohan Singh kept quiet about his house being attacked during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the capital. In a release sent to the media, Phoolka, who is the petitioner in a host of 1984 riots cases, said: "Shocking revelation has come out in the interview of Daman Singh, daughter of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, on a TV channel with Karan Thapar." "She has revealed that during the 1984 riots, the house of Manmohan Singh in Ashok Vihar was attacked. The mob had almost burnt the house when Manmohan Singh's son-in-law saved it from burning. She has also disclosed that Manmohan Singh's family knew the people in the mob," he said. Daman Singh was apparently giving the interview to coincide with the release of her new book "Strictly Personal: Manmohan and Gursharan". "What is most shocking that Manmohan Singh, when he was prime minister for 10 years, kept silent on this incident," Phoolka said. "Though Manmohan Singh's house was not burnt, but in the same area, the mob, most probably the same mob, killed seven Sikhs, burnt four gurdwaras, burnt five houses, burnt seven shops, burnt 42 vehicles and also burnt 31 factories," he claimed.

India to address concerns on terrorism at foreign secretary talks New Delhi (IANS): Ahead of the much-awaited IndiaPakistan foreign secretarylevel talks in Islamabad Aug 25, India Wednesday said it will address its concerns on terrorism "with all means available". External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, during a press briefing here, also hit back at Pakistani criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing Pakistan of waging a proxy war against India. He said Modi was merely articulating India's "core concerns about relations with" Pakistan over terrorism emanating from its soil. India and Pakistan Wednesday exchanged
some sharp words over Prime Minister Modi's statement with the Pakistan foreign office terming Modi's statement as "most unfortunate". On the foreign secretarylevel talks, the spokesperson said the two top officials are "meeting in the context of directives provided by the prime ministers to be in touch and look at the way forward in bilateral IndiaPakistan relations". He said the talks stems from the initiative of Modi when he invited his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to his swearing in ceremony in Delhi in May. "India will in any case address its concerns on terrorism with all means that
are available to us, our tool kit is not restricted in any manner," Akbaruddin added. On the Pakistani criticism of Modi's statement, he said: "Terrorism for us is a real and present danger. The prime minister was articulating what is for us a core concern in relations with Pakistan. Mere denials of selective approaches towards terrorism is not going to drive away our concerns." "These stem from the fact that some of the worst terrorist attacks in Indian owe their genesis to areas either in Pakistan control or in Pakistan," he said, and cited the 2001 attack on the Indian parliament by
SC rejects Gujarat officer's plea to transfer cases
New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Wednesday rejected the plea by Pradeep Sharma, a senior Gujarat cadre IAS officer now under suspension, seeking transfer of investigations in five cases filed against him from the state police to the CBI. Rejecting his contention that he was being targeted because his brother, a senior IPS officer in the state, had refused to carry out illegal orders of political bosses in Gujarat, an apex court bench of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice N.V. Ramana said: "Allegation of mala fide has not been substantiated."
NEW
The court noted the grounds of mala fide and victimisation that Pradeep Sharma was tracing to his IPS brother Kuldip Sharma refusing to carry out illegal orders of then chief minister Narendra Modi and former minister of state for home Amit Shah when he was additional DG CID are the one that he (Kuldip Sharma) had himself given up before the Central Administrative Tribunal. Noting the assertion by the Gujarat government has not been denied by the counsel appearing for Pradeep Sharma, the court said: "Since Kuldip Sharma has
himself given up factual/personal mala fides, in our opinion, the petitioner cannot rely upon them to substantiate his case of transfer." "In view of the above and having considered the prayer of the petitioner for transfer in its proper perspective in the light of relevant pleadings of the parties, we are of the opinion that no case for transfer of cases to the CBI is made out by the petitioner." The court said: "Allegations of bias are not substantiated. The said prayer, therefore, will have to be rejected and is rejected."

Pakistani militants and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which 10 Pakistani terrorists attacked India's commercial capital. "The attack on our parliament, which is one of the most sacred institutions in India, and the heinous killings of Indians and 16 other nationalities in Mumbai cannot be wished away. These are matters of present and real concern to us and the prime minister was articulating our core concerns in relations with Pakistan," he said. Earlier, Pakistani Foreign Office spokeswoman Tasneem Aslam said the statements by Modi emanating "at the highest political
level were "most unfortunate". She said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's visit to India in May for Modi's swearingin was in the spirit of wanting to establish good neighbourly relations with India. The visit "generated a fresh momentum in the bilateral relationship" and "it would be in the larger interest of the regional peace that instead of engaging in a blame game, the two countries should focus on resolving all issues through dialogue and work together to promote friendly and cooperative relations". She termed Modi's statements as "repeating the baseless rhetoric against

Pakistan regarding terrorism" and recalled that Pakistan has consistently condemned terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations. Modi, while addressing Indian armed forces personnel in Leh, Tuesday said Pakistan was indulging in a proxy war killing innocent people in India as it has lost the power to fight a conventional war. "The neighbouring country has lost the strength to fight a conventional war, but continues to engage in the proxy war of terrorism. Indian armed forces are suffering more casualties from terrorism than from war," Modi said.

Sonia, Kharge attack government over communal violence
New Delhi (IANS): As parliament Wednesday debated the communal violence bill, the Congress launched an allout attack on the Narendra Modi govern-
ment, with party president Sonia Gandhi alleging an "alarming increase in the number of incidents of communal violence" since the BJP came to power. Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress party leader in the Lok Sabha, said more than 600 incidents of communal violence had been orchestrated to polarise voters. Addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Central Hall of parliament, Gandhi said there was a growing concern, particularly among women and minorities, on whether the Bharatiya Janata Party was seeking to "profit from dividing the country on sectarian lines". "There is a great deal of concern in the country, particularly among women and minorities, the poor, about whether the BJP The Canadian Bookkeepers Association and its sister organisations (CBA) offers you the opportunity of mean to work for all of India's becoming a Registered Professional communities, or whether they Bookkeeper. seek to profit from dividing the nation on sectarian lines," Gandhi said. She added that the BJP showed in its 10 weeks in power that it was governing "without policies". To begin your career path, contact a Gandhi drew a connection program adviser at Ashton College between the rise in communal violence and radical utterances for more information, or go to by some BJP leaders. www.ashtoncollege.com. "Already since the BJP has come to power, there has been an alarming increase in the number of incidents of communal violence. In addition, there have been other subtle but pernicious signals of intolerance," Gandhi said, addressing the Congress MPs, which included Ashton College former prime minister 604 899 0803 Manmohan Singh. www.ashtoncollege.com Her views were carried forward in parliament by Kharge. "There is an ongoing attempt

to suppress the minorities in the country, so that they disassociate themselves from mainstream politics," Kharge said, opening a discussion on communal violence in the Lok Sabha on behalf of his party. He further alleged that "in whichever states elections were approaching, there was an increase in communal violence". As soon as the Lok Sabha assembled in the morning, Congress members demanded that a discussion on incidents of communal violence should be taken up immediately. Kharge complained that though his party had given a notice for a discussion on the matter at least a fortnight back, the debate was yet to take place. "There are riots taking place in states which are to go for elections or by-polls. In Uttar Pradesh, more than 600 incidents of communal violence were orchestrated to polarise the voters," Kharge said. He claimed that according to government data, 113 incidents of communal violence took place in May and June after the BJP-led government was sworn in. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who had led an unprecedented noisy protest Aug 6 against rising incidents of communal violence, was seen listening attentively when the debate took place. BJP MP from Gorakhpur Yogi Adityanath rebutted the allegations strongly, arguing there were many Congress-ruled states which had been witnessing communal incidents. "Though law and order is a state government affair, if they (Congress) would have analysed truthfully, they would have found why polarisation is taking place," Adityanath said. He alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government has taken back cases against terrorists and allotted special funds for paying salaries of Islamic teachers. "They (opposition parties) never raised a voice when Kashmiri Hindus were displaced, they never raised it
when Assam riots took place," he said, adding that the truth was always bitter. PDP's Mehbooba Mufti countered his argument, saying that in Jammu and Kashmir "50,000 Muslims too have been killed" and that it was "unfortunate" that political parties were more interested in point scoring of how many communal incidents took place in whose reign rather than try and find a solution to it. Trinamool Congress' Sudip Bandopadhyay said it was the responsibility of the government to stop incidents of communal violence. RJD MP Pappu Yadav elicited protests when he named BJP president Amit Shah in the house and said that right wing organisations were responsible for incidents of communal violence. Besides the issue of communal violence, Sonia Gandhi also took on the BJP for "imitating" Congress policies which they had "hypocritically" opposed earlier. "The new government now supports the proposed Goods and Services Tax, sugar subsidies, railway and diesel price hikes, FDI in insurance, the Aadhaar scheme, and other key UPA budget measures, all of which they had bitterly, and, if I might add hypocritically, denounced, obstructed and prevented progress on when they were where we are today," she said. Gandhi also said that the ruling party even tried to prevent a discussion on Gaza in parliament and then ended up voting at the UN Human Rights Council just as the UPA would have. Noting that the Congress has been reduced in numbers to an all-time low in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi, however, said they have not been reduced "in spirit". The Congress tally in the Lok Sabha is 44, sharply down from its 206 in the 15th Lok Sabha. She said the party will continue to play the role of a "vigilant opposition" and will "resist the authoritarian and sectarian tendencies" of the new government as it tries to get its way in parliament.

Indian-origin man murdered in New Zealand
Wellington (IANS): A man and woman have been charged with the murder of a man of Indian-origin, Davender Singh, in New Zealand's Auckland city. He was found dead in a car Thursday evening. The 28-year-old man and the woman, aged 31, briefly appeared in the Manukau District Court Saturday morning and were jointly charged with Singh's murder, Suff.co.nz reported Saturday.
Justice of the Peace Graham suppressed both names and remanded them in custody until a Auckland High Court appearance Wednesday. Punjabi interpreters have been requested for the next appearance. Davender Singh, 35, of the Papatoetoe suburb and his partner stopped outside the Manukau Events Centre in their car Thursday evening. His body was found in the car outside
the events centre on Norman Spencer Drive just 25 minutes later. It is believed he died from stab wounds, police said. The developments follow the release Friday night of CCTV footage as police sought public help to identify a mystery vehicle seen leaving the area around the time of the murder. Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said while police were pleased to have made early arrests, the investigation was
still in its infancy. "Police are still appealing for witnesses and we ask that anyone who drove down Norman Spencer Drive between 7.20 p.m. and 7.45 p.m. on Thursday night that might have seen Mr Singh's car parked outside the Manukau Events Centre please come forward to police," he said. Police were also yet to recover the murder weapon, believed to be a knife. But they
were satisfied that robbery was not the motive. "We are well aware that the investigation has attracted intense interest within the Indian community and we ask that people stay patient and allow police time to work through an investigation and fact-finding process." Police were not seeking anyone else in relation to Singh's death.
Fauja Singh urges people to join peace marathon in Britain
London (IANS): India-born centenarian Sikh runner Fauja Singh has urged everyone to join a peace marathon organised in London to mark the First World War centenary in Britain, media reported. London-based 103-year-old Fauja Singh, who is believed to be the world's oldest runner, has organised a relay race to mark the hundredth year of World War I as message of "co-operation and harmony", The Ilford Recorder reported Saturday. The event will be organised by Singh's "Sikhs in the City" running club in London Borough of Redbridge Aug 24. Singh, nicknamed the "Turbaned Tornado", said the race was particularly in honour of the "forgotten victims" of conflicts -- women and the elderly. "I urge everyone to support the race as there is too much violence in the world today," the report quoted Singh as saying. Singh has been encouraging people of all faiths to join the peace marathon calling for an end to war. “I was only three at the time and it seems that despite the hundred years since, man still continues fighting man when there is no need," Singh said. Since he took up running in 2000 aged 89, Singh has run nine full marathons. The Marathon runner retired after the Hong Kong marathon last year. Singh, who was born in India in 1911, took up running in his eighties to distract himself from the trauma of losing his son, daughter and wife in quick succession. "Man should be fighting injustice, poverty and hatred, not each other," Singh added. The relay will comprise 21 laps of a 2km route, with participants receiving a commemorative medal and T-shirt.
Peerage for Indianorigin tycoon
London (IANS): An Indian-origin businessman, who has donated over 300,000 pounds to Britain's Conservative Party is to be elevated to the House of Lords, a media report said Friday. Ranbir Singh Suri, chairman of the Oceanic Jewellers Ltd, was nominated by Prime Minister David Cameron. He is among a group of 22 new members of the upper house of parliament, Sky News reported. The Queen had "graciously" signified "her intention of conferring Peerages of the United Kingdom for Life" on the 22, 10 Downing Street said in a statement. It is understood they will receive their appointment in due course. The founder and chairman of the British Asian Conservative Link set up in 1998 to encourage more political participation among Asians, is understood to have donated over 300,000 pounds to the Tories. The move is expected to fuel criticism as the addition of 22 new peers will make the House of Lords bigger than at any time since most of the hereditaries were removed by a law in 1999.

Akali Dal-BJP set up coordination panel
Chandigarh (IANS): With differences cropping up between both parties, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and its alliance partner in the government, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Tuesday announced the setting up of a state coordination committee. "Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today (Tuesday) constituted a sixmember state coordination committee of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party to further streamline the day-to-day functioning and cooperation between the alliance partners," Akali Dal general secretary Harcharan Bains said here. The committee will include Akali Dal senior vice president Ranjit Singh Brahampura, secretary general and former union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Rajya Sabha MP Balwinder Singh Bhunder (all from Akali Dal). From the BJP side the members will be Pathankot legislator Ashwani Sharma and senior BJP leaders Narottam Dev Ratti and Rajinder Bhandari.
Farmers, industry shifting to Haryana from Punjab: Congress Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa Tuesday said farmers and industry in Punjab's border areas adjoining Haryana were shifting to the neighbouring state due to the deteriorating environment in Punjab. "People on the border of Haryana are shifting their businesses to Haryana and also buying agricultural lands there. "In Haryana, they are getting better business environment, better law and order and drugs are almost non-existing," Bajwa said in a statement, while blaming the Parkash Singh Badal government in Punjab for the mess in the state. "Petrol and power tariff is much cheaper in Haryana, making it financially more prudent for investments and business. Old age pension in Haryana is Rs.1,200 per month, paid on monthly basis, while it is just Rs.400 per month in Punjab paid bi-annually," he said. Opposing the move in Punjab to hike power tariff, Bajwa said the Badal government should instead concentrate on supplying regular power to people who were bearing the brunt of power cuts. "Through this power tariff hike, people are further going to penalised by the state government to cover the cost of inefficiency and leakage by way of corruption," he said. Slamming the state government for power cuts despite the claims repeatedly made by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal of making the state power surplus within three years, Bajwa asked him when would the three-year period start. He also blamed the Badal government for the drugs menace and growing unemployment.
"Similar committees will also be set up at all the district headquarters shortly for enhanced coordination at the grassroots level," Bains said. Both parties, whose alliance is nearly four decades old, have been in government since 2007 in Punjab. In recent months, BJP leaders have criticised the Badal government and the Akali Dal, among other things, on the issue of imposition of taxes on traders. BJP minister in the Badal government, Anil Joshi, took on the Akali Dal leadership and got an equal response in statements from them. The BJP leadership has been upset following the defeat of now union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley from the Amritsar seat in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Jaitley lost by over one lakh votes to Congress leader Amarinder Singh, leaving the Akali Dal and BJP embarrassed.
BJP legislator and chief parliamentary secretary Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former MP and cricketer-turned-politician
Navjot Singh, has also openly criticised the government on certain issues in recent months.

the state's financial 'mess' and said they should ensure that Punjab gets the grants from the central government which the two had promised the state. Punjab's Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar, in a statement here, said the financial situation of the state was pathetic, in spite of a friendly government at the Centre. "There is no improvement in fiscal management of the state. The situation is precarious as unpaid bills running into crores of rupees, delay in salaries of government employees etc. manifest the poor financial position," Jakhar said. "Earlier, you had a perfect alibi to blame the UPA gov-

Now that you are partner and ally of the central government, people are waiting to see those truckloads of grants from the central government land on the soil of Punjab and the much-hyped beginning of golden age in Punjab under Mr. (Narendra) Modi's stewardship," Jakhar said. Pointing out to a report of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the year 2013-14, Jakhar said Punjab availed overdraft for 49 days and resorted to ways and means advances for 120 days. BJP-Akalis: Friends in Punjab, foes in Haryana
Chandigarh (IANS): Sworn allies in Punjab for over three decades, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal are political foes in adjoining Haryana. The BJP and the Akali Dal have been running an alliance government in Punjab since 2007. The Akalis are also part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Harsimrat Badal, from the Akali Dal, is a minister in the Narendra Modi government. In Haryana, which goes to the polls later this year, the Akalis have, however, stitched an alliance with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). The BJP, which has a tie-up with the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) led by Kuldeep Bishnoi, son of former chief minister Bhajan Lal, is all set to oppose the INLD-Akali Dal alliance and the ruling Congress. The Akalis, especially its seniormost leader and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, have put the BJP on a sticky wicket by siding with the INLD and by raking up the row over the control of gurdwaras in Haryana. In Punjab, Badal asserts that the alliance with the BJP is "forever". But the same does not hold true in Haryana. With the BJP eyeing its first major electoral victory in Haryana's assembly polls, the controversy and violence associated with the control of Haryana gurdwaras could not have come at a worse time - just before the assembly elections. The BJP national leadership had to, behind the scenes, restrain Badal recently from taking the gurdwaras matter too far as this could affect the BJP in the coming elections. In the recent Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won seven of the 10 parliamentary seats in Haryana. This was the best performance by the BJP, which did not have a solid political base in Haryana. The BJP had contested eight seats in the state. The BJP's alliance partner, HJC, lost both the seats it contested, Hisar and Sirsa. The two seats were lost to INLD candidates who were supported by the Akali Dal. In fact, the INLD candidate and winner of the Sirsa seat, Charanjit Singh Rori, was an Akali Dal legislator earlier. On the Hisar seat, HJC president Kuldeep Bishnoi, whom the BJP had once projected as the future chief minister of the BJP-HJC alliance, lost by around 32,000 votes to INLD's Dushyant Chautala, greatgrandson of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal. Badal went and campaigned for the INLD candidates on both seats, which technically meant that he was opposing the BJP-HJC alliance. Badal had tried, before the Lok Sabha polls, to forge an alliance between the BJP and the INLD, but the BJP leadership opted for the HJC. The BJP and INLD have in the past been politically together and even ran an alliance government in Haryana. For the BJP and the Akali Dal, political friendship seems to end at Punjab's border with Haryana.

Somdev to spearhead Davis Cup campaign against Serbia
New Delhi (IANS): In the absence of Leander Paes,
Somdev Devvarman will be spearheading the
Indian campaign in the crucial Davis Cup World
Group play-off against 2013 finalists Serbia in Bangalore Sep 12-14. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) selection committee, headed by Anil Dhurpar, met here Wednesday and picked Somdev, Yuki Bhambri, Rohan Bopanna and Saketh Myneni for the Davis Cup tie. "Zeeshan Ali (coach) stated that Anand Amritraj
(Davis Cup captain) had suggested to the selection committee that since Paes is not available for Davis Cup and also since Mahesh Bhupathi is not playing competitive tennis for the last few months, he prefers the playing combination of Somdev, Yuki, Bopanna and Myneni," said Dhurpar in a statement. All the six members of
the Asian Games team were discussed but the committee members decided to go for Somdev, Yuki, Bopanna and Myneni leaving out Sanam Singh. Sanam, who was a part of the last Davis Cup tie against South Korea, was preferred in the Asian Games team ahead of some higher ranked players on account of being a former gold medallist
Hockey India questions Arjuna Awards selection committee New Delhi (IANS): Hockey India (HI) Wednesday blasted the Kapil Dev-led Arjuna Awards selection committee after none of the seven players it had recommended were chosen for the prestigious award. The seven players were Joydeep Kaur and Ritu Rani from the women's team and Dharamvir Singh, V.R. Raghunath, Tushar Khandker, Bharat Chetri and Shivendra Singh from men's hockey. HI secretary general Narinder Batra wondered how out of 15 Arjuna Awardees, five hailed from just one state, Kerala. "Out of 15 Arjuna Award winners five are from one state only. Is it a co-incidence or a professionally
managed coup by the SAI and the sports ministry. I will not name the athletes since they should be respected for what they have been rewarded with," said Batra. Batra also questioned the conflict of interest in the committee, especially commentator Anupam Ghulati, who is a former employee of HI. "Is it known to the committee Anupam Ghulati who was member of this committee was an exemployee of Hockey India and was asked to leave Hockey India in a bad taste? Did he recuse himself when hockey was discussed," said Batra. The HI secretary general said it was Ghulati who told the committee that hockey should not con-

sidered since there were no results in the last four years. Batra also revealed that Ghulati was forced to resign by HI after he had shortlisted 30 probables for the 2012 London Olympics on his own and forwarded it to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) with consulting the selection committee. Batra said the seven hockey players have been cheated by the sports ministry and the Sports Authority of India (SAI). "Since the government of India has cheated the seven players of their rightful place in getting at least one award, we Hockey India will give them Rs.2 lakh each," he said.

Supreme Court rejects plea seeking stay on Aamir film 'PK' New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Thursday junked a petition seeking a stay on the screening of Aamir Khan starrer "PK" for alleged obscene scenes and scenes with a potential to stir ill-will among people practising different faiths. While throwing out the plea, the apex court said that the facets of religion should not be brought into art and entertainment. "This is art and entertainment. Don't bring religious facets in it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Let others watch," said an apex court bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Rohinton Fali Narimam as the counsel for NGO All India Human Rights & Social Justice sought a ban on its screening in India and abroad.
The NGO had objected to two scenes relating to alleged semi-nude appearance of Aamir Khan, and a rickshaw puller, appearing like Lord Shiva, pulling a cycle rickshaw in which two burqa clad woman are seated. The PIL said that "this is hurting religious sentiments of followers of Lord Shiva and it is a criminal offence
punishable under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (deliberate effort to outrage religious feelings)." It contended that "the scene shall probably create a communal tension among the two major communities. It is surprising that the film censor board has permitted its exhibition in cinema halls likely next Tuesday." Asking the counsel Nafis
Ahmad Siddiqui if the film has been through the Censor Board, Chief Justice Lodha said, "Others have a right to watch the movie. How is your legal and constitutional right affected." "India is a mature society. They know the difference between entertainment and other things," Chief Justice Lodha said as counsel told the court that there was anguish throughout the country and it (the film) was spoiling youth. To this, Chief Justice Lodha said, "It is an age of Internet. What will you hide? Youth are very smart these days." Taking a dig at the counsel pointing to generation gap, court asked him, "Why you are talking about your youth and mine. It is 50 year old."

SRK launches 'HNY' trailer, says it's about biggest heist SUPERSTAR Shah Rukh Khan launched the first trailer of his forthcoming home production "Happy New Year" (HNY), on the eve of India's Independence Day Thursday. He said the film, about the "biggest heist", is dedicated to inspire all losers. The film, directed by Farah Khan and produced by SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment, is centred around six losers who set out to change their destiny. "The film is not about one
actor, it is an ensemble film. It is about hope, belief and goodness. It is dedicated to losers. This film is about biggest heist. It's about six losers and one mission," SRK told the media at the trailer launch. The much-awaited threeminute trailer gives a sneak peek into the Bollywood masala film, and SRK said it was an apt day to launch it because the film has a patriotic streak with the song
"Indiawale". The ensemble cast that supports SRK in the film include Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah, as well as Jackie Shroff, who plays the bad guy. Touted as Bollywood's big Diwali release this year, the film promises to make the festive season 'happier' for fans of Hindi movies, and SRK, who will be seen on the big screen after a gap of over a

The trio of Farah, SRK and Deepika had earlier created magic on the screen and set the box office ringing with "Om Shanti Om". From the looks of it, "Happy New Year" seems like Hindi cinema will get its special bonanza this year soon.

Sports ministry wants to bring defiant BCCI under RTI New Delhi (IANS): Despite open defiance by the BCCI, the government Wednesday said it wanted to bring the powerful cricket body under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The government has declared all National Sports Federations (NSFs) receiving grant of Rs.10 lakh or more in a year as public authorities under the RTI Act but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has contested it saying it does not get any gov-
ernment grants. Last year, the BCCI also got a stay order from the Madras High Court against appearing before the Central Information Commission (CIC). Sports Minister Sarbanabda Sonowal, while responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Wednesday said the government has formulated the National Sports Development Bill to bring BCCI under the ambit of RTI. "The Government has also for-
mulated a draft of the National Sports Development Bill to bring all the National Sports Federations and the BCCI under the RTI Act with the provision of exclusion clause of protecting personal/confidential information relating to athletes," Sonowal said. The minister also said that he was aware of the several controversies in the BCCI but ruled out any intentions of taking over the cricket body. "BCCI is an autonomous body
registered under the Societies Act. It is not feasible for the Government to take over and run the day to day activities of BCCI. Several controversies about BCCI regarding allotment of franchisees, match fixing, betting etc., reported in sections of print and electronic media, have come to the notice of the Government. Various agencies of the government namely the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax and Service Tax Department have conducted
inquiries into the allegations of the irregularities involving the BCCI in the country," Sonowal added. Sonowal also said that government was also working on check unfair practices and get rid of match-fixing. "In order to curb match fixing and other unfair practices in sports, Ministry of Law has prepared a draft legislation has sought the views of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs," Sonowal said.

nominated cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin and pistol shooter Heena Sidhu, along with 13 others, for the Arjuna Awards. Eight names, including that of discus throwers Vikas Gowda, Krishna Poonia, shuttler P.V. Sindhu and golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, were initially recommended for the Khel Ratna, sources in the committee told IANS. Only Jeev and Sindhu came close but the selection committee was not impressed with the former's 2012 Scottish Open win in the last four years. The committee also felt that Sindhu's bronze in last year's World Championships was not enough and she still has age on her side to get the award.

The industry can make you insecure: Bipasha Basu
MODEL-TURNED-ACTRESS Bipasha Basu feels that the competition in filmdom is so cut throat that a feeling
of insecurity creeps in. "This industry can make you insecure because it's do or die for you all the
time," the actress told IANS. "If you are enjoying it, I know it's rare, like me, you kind of sail through your 14 years peacefully. You never know that much time has passed. Also, I am one of the lucky ones who doesn't have an agenda," added the 35-year-old. When it comes to her career, Bipasha, who entered filmdom with 2001 hit "Ajnabee", has worked in various genres like action thrillers "Dhoom" and "Race", comedy "No Entry" and off beat drama "Corporate" and "Lamhaa". However, off late she mostly featured in horror films like "Aatma" and "Raaz 3". In fact, her next releases is also horror drama "Creature 3D".
Katrina's stunts in 'Jagga Jasoos' were not hectic: Anurag Basu KATRINA Kaif is making news for doing her own stunts in “Jagga Jasoos”. Director Anurag Basu says the actress underwent “a bit of a training”, but it wasn't very “hectic” to perform them. “We were in South Africa where Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina both had to do stunt scenes. Ranbir was performing his own stunt. I couldn't get duplicate for one person, so she had to undergo a little bit of training to do the stunts, which were not very hectic,” Basu told IANS from Mumbai on phone.
The film is set to release next year. Basu, whose last film -- the
highly acclaimed and commercially successful "Barfi!" -- came two years ago, is currently seen judging talent show “India's Best Cinestars Ki Khoj” on Zee TV. He had earlier judged “India's Best Dramebaaz”, but finds the "judging" job stressful this time. "The talent is good but this is stressful then the last show I did. The contestants in 'India's Best Dramebaaz' were kids and it was fun to judge them but this time they are grown up adults and it's been stressful," he said. (IANS)
When asked about the same, she said:” I have done all kind of films. It's not that I have done only horror films, but yes if you compare it with other actresses', maybe I have done a lot more horror film. "It's just that I want to be
part of films that I enjoy genre is irrespective. I love films that entertain, allow me to perform and offer me author driven role." She is also shooting for director Bhushan Patel's "Alone", which is also a horror drama.
" 'Alone' is a supernatural film, but it has got so many layers to it. It's extremely intense romantic film. It's a multi-layered role. I am happy with the way work is happening. It's all going really well," said Bipasha. (IANS)

2014 Nissan Altima SVSedan. Much loved sedan continues to impress
By Autoreview man
Although the fifth generation Altima is “allnew,” it is built on the same platform as the outgoing model with the new model although using an existing platform is much improved with improvements in aerodynamics, suspension, steering, seats, instrumentation, safety and technology. The Altima has always been a good looking mid-size sedan and the new 2014 model is no exception with its wide stance, patrician grille and projector-type headlights. It looks sleeker and more polished rounded off with its wrap around LED taillights. The 2014 Altima is available in six trims with two engine choices and a starting price of $23,698. The 2014 Altima with a new lighter 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine making 182 horsepower in 2.5, 2.5S, 2.5SV and 2.5SL form. The optional V6 engine generates an estimated 270 horsepower and is available in SV or SL trim. All 2013 Nissan Altima’s are equipped with a standard next-generation Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Nissan says the CVT offers better fuel economy than a traditional gearbox with stepped gears. In case you are wondering the “pure drive” badge on the Altima’s rear deck lid signifies it is one of Nissans most fuel efficient cars in it sedan lineup. The CVT has also been revamped for smoother operation and improved fuel efficiency and features expanded gear ratio coverage, with a lower starting ratio and a higher overdrive. Base Altima’s come incredibly equipped with Bluetooth hands-free management. Fully loaded versions of the Altima offer such goodies as leather seating, Bose sound with nine speakers, heated steering wheel, power lumbar support, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights and more. The lone option as on our tester was the $1,100 Technology Package, which includes navigation, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, and moving object detection. The touch-screen nav and Advanced Drive-Assist Display is a four-inch colour screen that tells you what’s happening with the audio system, ongoing fuel consumption, tire pressure, trip meter, navigation and all other systems. It worked very well and technophiles will love it. The cabins match the exterior, sleek, well designed and neat with a premium look and feel to all the fabrics, plastics and material. The seats are roomy front and rear and the trunk is decent enough size re Driver comfort is at the forefront with wellpadded elbow areas, steering wheel controls for quick access functions and dualzone climate control. Also new is a redesigned front suspension design that improves driving dynamics. A weight reduction of 32 kilograms over the previous generation make the 2013 Altima the lightest vehicle in the segment. Key high points of the new Canadian spec 2014 Altima include such cool equipment normally found on more expensive vehicles such as an advanced rear view monitor camera that detects four views, Blind Spot Warning, Land Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection. On the safety front the new Altima impresses with a smart tire pressure monitoring system that can inform the driver which tires are low on air and monitor the inflation pressure during refilling using the four-way flashers to indicate to the driver when the tire has reached its ideal pressure. On the road the mid –range 2.5 Altima SV model we tested impressed with its
speed and power. the new zero-gravity seats impressed, but lack thigh support for taller drivers or those with long legs. The
Standard SV features include XM satellite radio, power moonroof; heated outside mirrors, tire pressure monitor, remote key-
less entry with push button ignition, traction control and a dynamic vehicle control system. The Altima offers up comfort on both short and long journeys. Note the 3.5 model larger and heavier engine denotes the use of stiffer springs and sway bars. Bu the 2.5 engine as we drove is perfectly adequate and suitable for everyday use. Its lighter weight makes the car more sporty and frees up the handling somewhat. Natural Resources Canada ratings of 7.4/5.0 L/100 km (city/highway) for 2.5 models, and 9.3/6.4 L/100 km for 3.5 versions. With a starting Canadian price of $23,698 and a high specification the 2014 Altima is a very good deal and compares well with the competition. By Auto reviewman

Girls have ability to help grow India's economy: Priyanka Chopra ACTRESS Priyanka Chopra says that "girls have the ability to transform their own lives and help grow India's economy". She feels that they should be given more opportunities to make a mark. "Girls have the ability to transform their own lives, develop their own enterprises and help grow India's economy," said Priyanka, the UNICEF India goodwill ambassador.
Building Young Futures aims to unlock the potential of young people from disadvantaged communities. The 32-year-old, who had been supporting UNICEF's adolescent work in the country for eight years, met young women Sunday in Chandrapur, over 900 km from here, to mark International Youth Day - Aug 12 and to witness how their lives are being transformed
Distinction between men, women 'silly', says SRK
SUPERSTAR Shah Rukh Khan, who was seen dancing with a women police officer in Kolkata, Monday said it was not about the uniform but about a lady in a uniform and such distinction between men and women was "silly". "It's strange... 4-5 years back, I was shooting for 'Veer Zaara'. At that time, I had danced with jawans in uniform. In the 60s and 70s, many actors performed in the border for the jawans to encourage them. For the first time, it's not about the uniform, it's about a lady inspector in uniform. This distinction between men and women is rubbish and silly. It should not be even talked about," Shah Rukh
said at an event here. Politicians criticised the woman police officer alongside the Bollywood actor at an event in Kolkata. Sub-Inspector Sampa Haldar danced to a popular number from Shah Rukh-starrer "Jab Tak Hai
Jaan" as a host of top police officers and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee watched from the gallery at "Jai Ho", the Kolkata Police's annual cultural programme at the Netaji Indoor Stadium Saturday. (IANS)
through the Building Young Futures programme, which is run in partnership with Barclays, said a statement. The actress-singer feels that it is giving the girls vital skills and support they need to shape up their future.
"I met girls who have experienced incredible hardship in their lives. Building Young Futures has given them a voice and confidence, or 'daring' as they call it. These girls are working together, setting up businesses, planning their futures; they are
empowered to handle the challenges life throws at them," said Priyanka. "I strongly advocate that parents, care-givers and educators must give the girls more and more opportunities to grow in their lives," she added. (IANS)

The South Asian Family Association brought India's vibrant culture to downtown Vancouver on Granville Street last Saturday with music, dance, art and sport. Featured local talents included Yasmina Dance Academy, Neelamjit Quartet, Now or Never Dance Crew, Lapis featuring beatboxer Rup Sidhu and sitarist Mohammed Assani, Vijay's Brass Band and South Asian Arts amongst others. The evening closed out with a performance by Toronto based, Manj Musik. There were activities such as yoga classes by Karma Teachers, Bhangra 101 classes by South Asian Arts, gatka (an Indian martial art) demonstrations by the Guru Nanak Sikh Academy, turban-tying and much more. People had their hands adorned with henna tattoos, were glommed up with Bollywood makeovers provided by London Drugs and dressed up in South Asian outfits in front of a photo backdrop. There was also a small vendor marketplace.
"It was a great event to break the barriers among other communities. Lots of people had questions about Dastar. How we tie it? Why we wear it? What's the importance of the colour? I think this event has put SMC at a different level and we have raised a bar for ourselves and the club in reaching out to other communities", Sikh Motorcycle Club.

2014 Mazda3 GT – Value added and hard to beat sporty family car
By Auto reviewman
One of the most popular compact cars in Canada has a new look and upgraded content. A top seller across Canada since it first launched in 2003, the 2014 Mazda3 edition represents the 3rd generation of the iconic Mazda3. Available in both sedan and hatchback models; the newest version is set to be a big seller. The Japanese company has high hopes for the new model pointing out the Mazda3 accounts for one in every three Mazda vehicles sold in Canada. You can see why the Mazda3 has been so popular with its: sporty looks, compact size, front-engine, front-wheel drive configuration, good interior size and decent performance, reliability and fuel economy. Making full use of the Mazda “KODO” design ethos, as used on the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda6, the new “3” looks superb with its long, low roof and hood and short front and rear overhangs The KODO ethos dictates Mazda’s three main principles in design; speed, tension and allure. Mazda’s SKYACTIV suite of technologies is now prevalent throughout the 2014 Mazda3. Not only is the engine and transmission transformed by this technology, but the body structure is much lighter and
stronger as an integral part of the SKYACTIV approach to building a new Mazda. Improvements to the body structure include added safety and dramatically improved aerodynamics. The entire underbody of the car is carefully covered so as to reduce wind resistance. Side mirrors, side glass, door handles and all exterior panels are carefully contoured to allow the new Mazda3 to have a much more efficient aerodynamic profile. The result is a swoopy 0.275 CD for the hatchback and an incredible 0.255 CD for the sedan. Two engines make up the model line for 2014. Both are gasoline, powerful and fuelefficient. Tantalizing rumors were hinted at that a diesel power plant may materialize in the future, but for now its gasoline power only with no hybrid or all –electric version. The base GX and midrange GS Mazda3 models feature a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve engine with SKYACTIV technology. Performance numbers indicate 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. Equipped with a bigger 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine, and the Mazda3 delivers 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm. Fuel economy ratings are estimated at (L/100 km): 7.1 city, 5.0 hwy for the bigger engine
and 6.8 city and 4.8 highway forthe 2.0 liter inline four cylinder SKYACTIVE engine. Our tester was a 2014 Mazda3 GT SKYACTIVE model finished in a fetching MeteorGrey Mica paint and equipped with the SKYACTIVE-Drive Six- speed Sport mode automatic transmission. Base MRSP for the GT spec is $25,855 and includes as standard: the SKYACTIVE engine and transmission, all around disc brakes, dual sport exhausts, keyless entry and push button ignition, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and Aux inputs, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, power windows with one touch auto up/down Our tester was also equipped with $4000 worth of options including the convenience package comprising rain sensing wipers, heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, leather steering wheel, shift knob and brake knob and fully automatic on/off headlights. Also added was the retractable moonroof package which also included fog lamps. Final price for our tester rang in at a final $31,550 tally factoring in options freight, PDE and taxes and fees. The Mazda3 was a blast to drive with either the 6-speed manual transmission or the six speed auto transmission with paddle shifters. The available power from the
more powerful 2.5-litre engine is sufficient and offers a startling combination of speed, performance and fuel economy. Inside, the new Mazda3 looks like an upmarket European car with a level of fit, finish, material and workmanship that is excellent. Soft touch materials chrome and satin-finish metal abound and add nice contrast to the dark interior trim. The interior layout deserves some attention to talk about with its driver-centric focus up front. All of the important information is presented clearly, and, on the GT version buyers gain a fancy new heads-up display that displays speed and other relevant information ahead of the driver windshield.
Interior room in the new Mazda3 remains good and the cabin seems less narrow than before. Legroom, headroom and shoulder room remain good and the roomy rear seats feature folding seats that do actually fold flat. In the hatchback model one gain 572 litres of rear cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,334 litres when folded. Also aiding the driver is a new centre stack design featuring a new seven-inch, stand-alone screen that handles functions for the new infotainment system (Mazda Connect). It allows access to the phone, audio, settings and, when equipped, navigation functions. Also impressive is the fact the screen is both touch-sensitive and

capacitive- allowing for graphics and icons to be moved around by simply moving one’s finger over the screen like a tablet or smart phone. Trunk space and back seat room is excellent as is interior storage and comfort. Whether driving in the city or the interior quietness when driving in the city the Mazda3 displays excellent road manners, handling responses, braking and is impressively quiet on the highway. To sum up the new 2014 Mazda3 continues the tradition of being a popular, well equipped, economical and exciting family car.By Auto reviewman 2014 MAZDA3 GT priced from $25,855

Even more efficient and dynamic: The new 2015 Porsche Cayenne
A sharper design, increased efficiency and a host of standard features are the key characteristics of the new Porsche Cayenne. As a sports car among sport utility vehicles (SUVs), it offers seating for five, an extensive list of high-end features, and plenty of space for a lot of driving fun. The new Cayenne will launch on the Canadian market in four versions: Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and – a world premiere – the
Cayenne S E-Hybrid, the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. This model, along with the Panamera S E-Hybrid and the 918 Spyder, make Porsche the world's only carmaker to offer three plug-in hybrid models. The Cayenne S benefits from a new 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine. The Cayenne is a unique success story at Porsche. The company introduced the first generation in 2002. This vehicle made the idea of a sports car in the SUV segment a

reality – and it set standards right from the start. Sales have exceeded all expectations: Over 276,000 first generation vehicles were produced (2002 to 2010), and around 303,000 units of the second, which was introduced in 2010, have already been produced so far. So the Cayenne is not only boosting profitable growth at Porsche, it is also creating a solid economic foundation for investments in future generations of the entire sports cars lineup

Date : 1981-09-04 Location : 575 Richards St, Van, BC V6B, Canada Details : Some people end up living difficult lives, a long way off from where they started. Kristin Gurholt's life came to an end in a Vancouver alleyway behind 575 Richards Street on September 4, 1981. She was naked and her skull had been fractured. Her clothing was scattered around her and a suitcase containing all of her personal effects was found nearby. It was 2:00 in the morning and Kristen had just been evicted from the Marble Arch Hotel in the Downtown Eastside. Investigators believe she met her assailant when she entered the alley and that the

severe attack may have been the result of Kristin rejecting sexual advances. Kristin was just 34 years old, a petite woman with blue eyes and brown frizzy hair. She had come to Canada when she was only four, from Norway, and grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in a loving family with five sisters and three brothers. Kristin was a creative child, who loved to read. She did very well in school, and particularly excelled in music. She studied piano and received honours in the Royal Conservatory of Music exams. She went on to earn a masters degree in education. It was while Kristin was in university that she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She was married and had a son, who family say was her greatest joy and the love of her life. The marriage ended after a few years, and when her son was seven he went to live with his father in B.C. Kristin moved to Vancouver and would take the bus on weekends to see him. Kristen, who was sometimes called Sunny or Misty, died a violent death in a dark alley, leaving behind a 12-year-old son. Her family has endured 32 long years of waiting for justice. For them, the memories of the

sweet little girl who filled their house with music have been forever tainted with the painful knowledge of how her life ended and the fact that no one has been held accountable.
