Washington (IANS): Indian Prime Narendra Modi Wednesday joined the world's most powerful people ranking 15th on the Forbes list with Russian President Vladimir Putin once again beating US President Barack Obama to the top spot. "India's newest rock star doesn't hail from Bollywood. He is the newly elected prime minister who sailed into office in May with a landslide victory, ushering the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) into power after decades of control by the Gandhi dynasty," said the US business magazine of Modi. Describing Modi as a "Hindu nationalist", Forbes referred to the 2002 Gujarat riots when he was the state's chief minister noting he "is credited with massive reconstruction projects in his home state of Gujarat". Delhi assembly dissolved, parties prepare for polls

New Delhi (IANS): With the dissolution of the Delhi assembly Wednesday, all three major parties in the national capital - the BJP, Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress - have started gearing up for fresh polls scheduled to take place soon. While the election management committee as well as the media cell of the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a meeting to discuss poll preparations, the Aam Aadmi

Party (AAP) began printing posters for campaigning. "We discussed all issues related to the successful management of the upcoming Delhi (assembly) election and also took note of the shortcomings in the last election (December 2013)," a BJP leader said. BJP's Delhi unit chief Satish Upadhyay, six of the seven Lok Sabha members from Delhi along with some legislators and office bearers attended the meeting.

BJP's Delhi in-charge Prabhat Jha was also present. After the meeting, Upadhyay told the media: "We have sought feedback and inputs on how to improve our performance in the upcoming polls from all those present in the meeting. We will leave no stone unturned to win." The AAP has started printing posters boasting of the work it did in the 49 days when it was in power in Delhi and vowed to take

on the BJP and defeat it comprehensively. "We are ready to take on the BJP. The people will choose the AAP and we are confident of getting a majority," an AAP leader said. The Congress too attacked the BJP and said it would teach a "bitter lesson" to the party. "The Congress would teach a bitter lesson to the communal BJP. Congress party leaders and workers have been fighting for deliver-

The December 2013 assembly elections in Delhi threw up a fractured mandate.

ing justice to the people of Delhi," Delhi Congress leader Mukesh Sharma said in a statement. The union cabinet Tuesday recommended the dissolution of the 70-member Delhi assembly where no political party had enough numbers to form a stable government. The Election Commission also cancelled by-elections in three assembly constituencies -Mehrauli, Tughlakabad and

Parrikar set to become Modi's cabinet minister

Panaji (IANS): Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Thursday virtually confirmed his elevation to the union cabinet even as the BJP legislators are expected to meet Friday to discuss his successor. While Parrikar is being tipped for the key defence ministry portfolio, one of the two held by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the 58-year-old Parrikar said he had been instructed by BJP president Amit Shah to accept any responsibility entrusted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Parrikar, however, told the media that the portfolio he is to get had not been revealed to him yet. "Amit Shah told me to accept any assigment given to me by the prime minister. The second part is the prerogative of the prime minister," said Parrikar, ending the speculation of his appointment as

NEW

a cabinet minister. Parrikar, along with state party president Vinay Tendulkar and organising secretary Satish Dhond, met Shah Wednesday in New Delhi, fuelling speculation about Parrikar's inclusion in the union cabinet, which is set for an expansion Sunday. Parrikar said the BJP's parliamentary board, the highest decision making body in the party, would take a final call on issues related to cabinet expansion Saturday morning. "On 8th morning many issues will be clear to you," Parrikar said, adding that he was forced to address the media Thursday to steer clear of speculation. Since Wednesday, Goa has been abuzz about the possibility of Parrikar becoming the first politician from the state, often considered politically insignificant, to be a full fledged cabinet minister in New Delhi. Goa already has representation in the central ministry in form of North Goa MP Shripad Naik, who is the union minister of state (independent charge) for tourism and culture. It has also been represented in the central ministry earlier by Ramakant Khalap and Eduardo Faleiro.

Cafes, bars, bus stands, the social media and other public spaces have been discussing the whens and hows of having Parrikar, a popular leader in Goa, in the central cabinet. Parrikar, who said he had mixed feelings about his elevation, argued that the call of the nation was greater than that of a state.Parrikar also said he had expressed his apprehensions about being elevated to central governance to Shah. "One reservation is obviously because I am elected from the state for a five-year term with a popular mandate. Obviously my feeling was that unless I complete my term it is not exactly not right on my part to leave in the middle," said Parrikar, who is chief minister for a third time. Parrikar did not say much about his successor but said the appointment would have to be made before Nov 9 when the new ministers in the expanded cabinet are expected to be sworn in. Party sources, however, said that in addition to three frontline leaders, the candidature of Shripad Naik could not be ruled out. Forever playing second fiddle to Parrikar in his political career, Naik could be expected to relin-

Families of men abducted in Iraq seek proof they are alive

New Delhi (IANS): Amid reports of killing of hundreds of people in Iraq by the jihadist Islamic State group, the families of 40 Indians abducted in June in Mosul city Tuesday asked the Indian government for proof that their men were still alive.

The families of the 40 men, who were employed with a Turkish construction company in Mosul when they were abducted, met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for around half an hour at the Jawaharlal Nehru Bhavan Tuesday evening.

Sushma Swaraj, emerging from the meeting, told media persons that it was her fifth meeting with the families of those abducted. "We have five or six sources who are working to get information about the abducted Indians. But while our sources have confirmed that the men are alive, we have not been able to establish direct contact with them." She told the families, "I want to assure you that the Indian government will not leave any stone unturned" to trace and rescue the abducted men. She said India has also appealed to the UN to help in locating the missing men. "We are searching for them. We have also appealed to the sources to give us some sign, like a kara (bangle), as proof that they

are alive so that we can give their families some assurance. But they failed to provide us with it. We have now asked them to provide the names of those who are in captivity, they said they are trying to get the list," Sushma Swaraj told newspersons. She said the families had requested that another Indian official be sent to Iraq to assist in the rescue efforts, and she has agreed to the proposal. "They do understand us and acknowledge the effort that we are putting in," Sushma Swaraj added. The families said they asked for proof from the Indian government that the abducted men were still alive. Jasbir Singh, 24, from Nawanshahr, Punjab, went to

Mosul to work as a labourer in a factory eight months ago. His elder brother, Sundar Pal, fast losing hope, was among those who came to meet the minister. "Jasbir last called up on June 15. He said he has been captured by the IS (Islamic State). He said they were being given food, but they will have to work. He then disconnected the phone," Pal told IANS. The family had spent Rs.1.70 lakh to send Jasbir, the youngest of four brothers, to Iraq and were hoping to recover the money fast. Jasbir managed to send back only Rs.30,000 before he was kidnapped. Manjit Kaur from Jalandhar, Punjab, came to meet the minister, hoping to hear news about her husband Devinder Singh, 42, with whom she last spoke June 15. The couple have three children, five-year-old twins and an eight-year-old boy. She said her relatives give her money to make ends meet. Her husband went to Iraq three years ago to work as carpenter. "On June 15, I last spoke with him. He said they have been caught by the IS. He said 'Kismat rahi to miloonga, bachchon ka khyal rakhna (If fate is kind, we will meet, look after the children)," Kaur told IANS, tears rolling down her cheeks. Poonam Devi, from Siwan district in Bihar, also came to meet the minister. Her husband, Vidya Bhushan Tiwari, went to work in Iraq as a labourer and was abducted. Poonam is staying with relatives since June 15. She has two small children, a boy aged three and a daughter of five. Sobbing as she spoke to IANS, Poonam said: "He last spoke to me on June 15. He said, 'We have been imprisoned and are being taken to some other place'. When I asked when will you come, he said, 'Can't say', and cut the phone." The 40 abducted men hail from Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Kapurthala and Ludhiana districts of Punjab. Two each are from Himachal Pradesh and Bihar, and three are from West Bengal. B.S. Ramoowalia, senior vice president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, told IANS that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal met Sushma Swaraj twice earlier with the families of the abducted men. "The government is doing its best," he said. Sushma Swaraj was accompanied by Akali Dal leader and union minister Harsimrat Kaur, daughter-in-law of Parkash Singh Badal. Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Manjit Singh G.K. and general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa were also present.

President, PM join prayers, festivities to mark Gurpurab New Delhi/Chandigarh (IANS): The 546th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikh religion, Guru Nanak Dev, was celebrated Thursday across the country and abroad including in neighbouring Pakistan. President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined prayers at the Rashtrapati Bhawan premises. Thousands of devotees thronged the holiest of Sikh shrines, the Harmandar Sahib popularly known as Golden Temple in Amritsar, and other gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana and other parts of the country to

mark 'Gurpurab'. Gurdwaras were illuminated since Wednesday, and there was an atmosphere of festivities to mark the occasion. 'Langars' or community kitchens were arranged at several places in and around gurdwaras. A gurbani (hymn) recital was organised on the occasion at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace. Ansari and Modi were among the dignitaries who attended the event. The gurbani was conducted by Bhai Chamanjit Singh. In a series of tweets Thursday, Modi called on the people to follow the path of compassion,

truth and peace as shown by Guru Nanak. "I bow to the venerable Guru Nanak (Devji) on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The life and teachings of Guru Nanak (Devji) inspire us eternally. Let us follow the path of compassion, truth and peace as shown by him," Modi said. "Today is also a day to pledge to embrace the path of service and work towards a just and equal society, free from any kind of social evils," he added. At the Golden Temple, thousands lined up since early in the day to offer prayers. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee

(SGPC) volunteers had a tough time managing the rush of devotees."We came here at 3 a.m... The whole atmosphere was very spiritual," said Adhiraj Singh, a student. Hymns were rendered at the holy shrine and hundreds of other gurdwaras across the region. A contingent of over 1,500 Sikh devotees who arrived in Nankana Sahib, 100 km from Lahore, in Pakistan Wednesday celebrated at the historic gurdwara there. Born in 1469 at Nankana Sahib (now in Pakistan's Punjab province), Guru Nanak Dev founded Sikhism.

Singh Arora, who came to the Bangla Sahib gurdwara in Delhi. "I went to the Sis Ganj gurdwara last night and polished shoes and s well as cleaned the premises as part of kar sewa," said Karan Chandhok, a Delhi University student. Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar and Shah Rukh Khan took to Twitter to wish their friends and fans on the occasion of Gurpurab. Gurpurab celebrations were held in leading gurdwaras in Patna (Bihar) and Nanded (Maharashtra) and other parts of the country.

There was tight security at all leading Sikh shrines in Punjab and Haryana. Religious processions were taken out by the Sikh community in most cities and towns in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh in the last two days. In New Delhi, thousands of devotees thronged gurdwaras in and around the city and offered prayers. In the afternoon, langars or community kitchens were arranged in gurdwaras and on roadsides by the devout. "On this day, it is customary to not only pray at the gurdwara but also have the Guru's prasad which is langar," said Manjot

Deported from Malaysia, Punjab terrorist arrested in Chennai Chandigarh/Chennai (IANS): The Punjab Police Thursday arrested a top Khalistani terrorist, Ramandeep Singh alias Goldy, from Chennai airport, a senior police officer said. Ramandeep Singh is from the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). As part of efforts to track down wanted terrorists abroad, Ramandeep Singh was traced to Thailand where he shifted from Nepal, Punjab Police Inspector General Gaurav Yadav said here. "He was further tracked down in Malaysia and, in co-ordination with central agencies and Malaysian authorities, brought to Chennai early today and put under arrest at the airport," Yadav said in Chandigarh. Yadav said the Malaysian authorities deported Ramandeep and he was arrested on arrival at Chennai airport. "The matter was taken up with the Nepalese authorities for cancellation of his fake Nepalese passport, which has been revoked. He was interdicted by the Punjab Police, central agencies and the Malaysian authorities and deported to India," Yadav said. The Punjab Police had sent Deputy Superintendents of Police Rajinder Singh Sohal and Tejinderjit Singh Virk to Malaysia for co-ordinating the mechanism of brining back Ramandeep. "The two officers brought back fugitive terrorist Ramandeep Singh to Chennai airport by Air India flight 621. The police party along with Ramandeep travelled (Thursday) by air from Chennai to New Delhi and by road from New Delhi to Patiala," Yadav said. A separate two-member police party of the counter intelligence unit camped in Thailand for three weeks in SeptemberOctober this year but Ramandeep managed to escape to Malaysia. Ramandeep Singh is the second major Khalistani terrorist to be arrested by Punjab Police in recent weeks. Rattandeep Singh, chief of the Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan and a former associate of terrorists Paramjit Singh Panjwar and Wadhawa Singh, was caught in Gorakhpur in

Uttar Pradesh. Nabbed by the Punjab State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Sep 17, Rattandeep was based in Pakistan since 1993 and was wanted in a number of cases of bomb blasts. Ramandeep, who belongs to Bassi Pathana in Ropar district, came into contact with Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist Darshan Singh who introduced him to the Britain-based terrorist Paramjit Singh, a police officer said. A terrorist conspiracy to assassinate Rulda Singh, head of the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat organization, was hatched in Britain by Paramjit Singh and executed by Ramandeep. Two Britain-based men, Gursharan Singh and Piara Singh, were also involved in the conspiracy. Rulda Singh was shot at July 28, 2009 at his house in Patiala district. He succumbed to his injuries Aug 15 at PGI, Chandigarh. "Ramandeep escaped to Thailand, from where he went to Pakistan and underwent a two-week arms training," the police spokesman said, adding the man later turned up in Nepal. In Nepal, Ramandeep developed association with Pakistan-trained terrorist Harminder Singh. The duo roped in Jaswinder Singh, Gurjant Singh and Manjinder Singh to raise a terrorist module which was responsible for two bomb blasts in Patiala and Ambala. The Patiala blast took place on April 20, 2010. "After the Patiala blast, Ramandeep went back to Nepal and shifted to Thailand in 2011 under an assumed name and a forged Nepali passport.

He worked in a tours and travel agency. He recently set up an

export-import firm in Bangkok. He remained in touch with

Pakistan-based terrorist leaders and radicals based in North

America and Europe," the spokesman said.

Born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa, the daughter of Sikh immigrant parents, herself addressed her opponent's sexist comments this week saying Vincent Sheheen's laughter after "accidentally" calling her a "whore" was like "a kick in the gut." But the Washington Post blog 'The Fix' chose to ignore the larger issue. It instead focused on the 'unhappiness' of Ann Romney, the wife of President Barack Obama's 2012 Republican opponent and how Sheheen had become a headache for the Democrats. "Sheheen accidentally said the word 'whore.' And Ann Romney is not happy about it," the Fix wrote suggesting Sheheen "tripped over his words in a stump speech lambasting" Haley. "You probably haven't heard much about" Sheheen "for one simple reason: He has virtually no shot of unseating" Haley, it said. "But now Sheheen has become a headache for Democrats nationally after calling Haley a 'whore' on the stump." USA Today cited WIS-TV for Haley's comments about State Senator "Sheheen's use of the sexist slur, captured on video last week by the Morning News in Florence, South Carlolina. Sheheen can be heard saying, "we are going to escort whore out the door," about a minute into his remarks and then corrected himself by adding, "we're going to escort her out the door." The chuckling came when the crowd responded to his remarks with applause. Sheheen apologized during a radio appearance Monday, saying his words were "garbled" "but the damage was done," USA Today commented. Ann Romney blasted Sheheen's original comment and called it "unacceptable" in an interview with CNN. Republican senator Ted Cruz, denounced what he called a "personal attack" on Haley, his friend, in a Facebook post. Local South Carolina media outlet FITS reported more fully Haley's statements "in response to her Democratic opponent (inadvertently?) calling her a 'whore.'". London (IANS): To the delight of the diaspora community, who send a significant amount of their income back home, a Londonbased Indian-origin entrepreneur has launched a unique "paywhat-you-want" money remittance service. The brainchild of India-born Rajesh Agrawal, Xendpay online international money transaction platform could save customers in the developing world a whopping 60 million pounds (Rs.

585.80 crore) over the next five years. With $71 billion (Rs.436,579 crore), India was the largest recipient of remittances in the world last year."Xendpay is now potentially the first genuinely no fees international money transfer service to bank accounts, offering you the best exchange rates usually only available to multinational corporations, without compromising on transfer times or reliability," said the website of the

money transfer service. International money transfer is the largest overall source of external financing to developing countries - $436 billion (Rs.26,80,964 crore) in 2014 according to World Bank estimates. "But every year 9 percent of money transferred is swallowed up by fees and bad exchange rates and never reaches it's intended destination," the website added.

The users of the service can pay what they think the service is worth. "When you use our service you will see that we recommend a customised, voluntary charge based on the cost to us of delivering the service, and all we ask is that you pay what you think the service is worth," the website concluded. Xendpay is part of the Rational Group of Companies, which offers low-cost money transfer services.

Four Indian families robbed in New Jersey New York (IANS): A New Jersey town is holding public safety meetings after four Indian families were targeted by armed robbers post Diwali. The meetings to be held in Edison, New Jersey, will focus on home security and crime-prevention measures, after

complaints from residents that the town lacked enough police officers, mycentraljersey.com reported. "The victims are my neighbours, so this crime is very personal to me," Edison councilwoman Sapana Shah was quoted as saying. "I realise that Edison

must stay within budget and be cost-effective for our taxpayers. But Edison also needs more cops on our streets," she added. In all the reported burglaries, two or more masked men, armed with handguns, had entered the homes through rear entrances,

tied up occupants and ransacked the homes in search of valuables. The county police have not made any arrests yet but are investigating the incidents. The police have also offered cash rewards to people for information about the perpetrators

Sikh group seeks Obama support for justice for 1984 riots Washington (IANS): An umbrella Sikh group and a couple of human right bodies have written a letter to US President Barack Obama seeking his support for justice for the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in India that claimed 3,000 lives. "We are writing to urge the Obama administration to call on India's new government to bring justice to the victims of the 1984 massacres by prosecuting those responsible," the Sikh Coalition, Ensaaf and Human Rights Watch wrote in the letter sent Monday. "Although various government commissions found that some police and Congress Party officials instigated or were complicit in attacks, the primary architects of this violence have escaped justice," they wrote. "Given the

important role that India is poised to play, and is increasingly seeking, in setting international policypotentially as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council- we urge you to address impunity for the 1984 premeditated violence in your engagement with India." Only 30 people have been convicted for these crimes, with police and prosecution authorities failing to bring government and party officials allegedly involved to justice, the three groups said. The groups alleged that the entire Sikh community was targeted in retribution for the Oct 31, 1984 assassination of then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by two of her Sikh bodyguards. Although India's former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh

- himself a Sikh - tendered an apology for the 1984 massacres, he refused to accept state responsibility or make a commitment to justice, they claimed. "India's failure to deliver justice for these events reflects an abdication of moral responsibility on the part of successive governments from different parties, and undercuts India's claims that it respects

human rights and the rule of law," the groups wrote. The groups urged the Obama administration to make human rights a priority in US engagement with India "and to call upon the government to deliver justice to those who lost their lives, their dignity, or their loved ones during the November 1984 anti-Sikh massacres."

Punjab NRI Commission slaps notice on HDFC Bank for fraud

Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab Commission for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) has issued notice to the HDFC Bank after a Britain-based NRI alleged that an amount of Rs.70 lakh was siphoned off from his account allegedly by an official of the private bank, the commission said Wednesday. The NRI, Jagdev Singh Sanghia, alleged that the huge amount was siphoned off from his NRI accounts with the HDFC Bank's Model Town branch in Jalandhar city allegedly by Harshdeep Singh Madan, who is a former employee of the bank. The NRI alleged that Madan, who was public relations officer with HDFC, was assigned to him for personalised services by the bank when he (NRI) opened four fixed deposit accounts in the branch in January 2012. The fixed deposits were worth over Rs.14.87 lakh each (amounting to nearly Rs.60 lakh) and the maturity date was January 2013. "In the year 2013, it has been found that an amount of more than Rs.70 lakh was withdrawn from the fixed deposits and the NRI Saving accounts by cheat-

ing, forgery and fraud by said Harshdeep Singh Madan in connivance with the bank authorities." He served legal notice to the bank but received only evasive reply. He approached Grievance Redressal Officer of HDFC Bank at Mumbai, but there was lack of any response. He then sought intervention of this commission for an appropriate action against them, the commission said in a release here. "This commission has noticed the contents of the complaint. A whopping amount of more than Rs.70 lakh has allegedly been siphoned off from his account." "This may be for the reasons that the bank accounts of NRIs are more vulnerable. Such like alleged frauds not only create distrust amongst the investors but also expose bank's security," the commission said. "We feel that this is a fit case for inquiry/probe," the commission added while directing that a notice be issued to the HDFC general manager in Chandigarh. The HDFC management has been asked to appear before the commission Nov 13.

Presiding over a high level meeting, Badal accompanied by Punjab Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar asked Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal to implement the action plan before next April. Badal said his sole aim was to cut down on the time for provision of services to the common people besides bringing transparency in deliverance of all services as well as elimination of red tape in the transport department. Principal Secretary of Transport Anurag Aggarwal advised Badal that the action plan contained on-the-spot

delivery of learner’s driving license and driving license, echallan (fines) system, sms alerts and file tracking system submitted online to transport department, registration certificate and driving license data verification, and high security registration plates (HSRP) at dealer point. He said that department had identified 32 locations for driving test tracks including serpentine tracks for two-wheelers, four-wheelers and eight-wheelers with parallel parking along with public toilets for men and women. He said the entire rides would be monitored by CCTV cameras and the particulars of applicants would be biometric. Under the e-governance proj-

BSF recovers 22 kg heroin in Punjab, smugglers escape Amritsar (IANS): Border Security Force (BSF) troopers recovered 22 kg of heroin, valued at Rs.110 crore in the international market, in Punjab's Freozepur district along the India-Pakistan border, an officer said Monday. The latest heroin recovery was made near the Ulloke border outpost in Ferozepur sector, the officer said. This is the second major seizure of heroin by the BSF in Punjab in the past 24 hours. BSF troopers killed an Indian smuggler in exchange of fire and also recovered 22 kg of heroin in the Gurdaspur sector

Sunday morning. "On intervening night of 02/03 November, BSF troops

deployed in the area of Border Out Post Ulloke spotted suspicious movement of smugglers

ahead of the border security fence. The BSF troops challenged them but they did not pay any heed and continued with their aggressive posture besides firing on BSF troops. The troops opened fire in self defence but the smugglers managed to escape taking cover of high wild growth and foggy weather," a BSF spokesman said. The BSF has recovered over 328 kg of heroin during this year in the Punjab sector. Punjab has a 553-km-long, fenced international border with Pakistan.

Centre has assured speedy trial for 1984 riots: Sukhbir Badal Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Sunday said the union government has assured that all legal measures would be taken to ensure justice to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He said the Centre has assured speedy trial and

punishment to the guilty. "The time has come to ensure punishment for those unpunished perpetrators of the 'state sponsored' massacre in 1984," Badal told reporters in Gurdaspur district, 250 km from here. Badal said a delegation of the Akali Dal, led by union

minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, had taken up the issue with the government. He said the union government assured that justice would be provided to the affected people. The Narendra Modi government had Thursday announced that 3,325 vic-

tims of the 1984 riots will be given enhanced compensation amount of Rs.5 lakh each. Sikhs were targeted by mobs in Delhi and other places after two Sikh bodyguards of then prime minister Indira Gandhi assassinated her in New Delhi.

Sikh pilgrims at Nankana Sahib in Pakistan

Amritsar (IANS): A contingent of over 1,500 Sikh pilgrims from India reached the Sikh holy city of Nankana Sahib in Pakistan on Wednesday to mark the birth anniversary of Sikhism's founder Guru Nanak Dev. The pilgrims left for Pakistan Tuesday, just two days after a massive suicide bomb attack Sunday left over 60 people dead at Wagah in Pakistan, only 500 metres from the international border gates with India. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee

(SGPC) officials here said the 'jatha' (contingent) of Sikh pilgrims reached the birthplace of the first Sikh Guru Wednesday afternoon. They said the Pakistani authorities have assured that adequate security would be provided to the pilgrims in the wake of the Wagah blast. The group boarded three special trains from Amritsar and Attari, 30 km from here, for Lahore Tuesday. They left for Nankana Sahib, some 100 km from Lahore, by road Wednesday. The birth anniversary cele-

brations began Wednesday night with religious prayers and were followed by 'langar' (community kitchen) Thursday. Though the Wagah blast did cause some concern among the pilgrims before they left, most of them said they were not worried. "We have faith in the Guru. We are happy that we got the visas for Pakistan. Though we know about the Wagah blast, that has not deterred us from the trip," said Palwinder Kaur, one of the pilgrims, before leaving for Pakistan. However, not all the pilgrims who had applied for visas got them from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. Of the 1,028 who applied through the SGPC, only 759 got visas. SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh said the Pakistani authorities should not reject so many visas given the religious sentiments of Sikhs for the founder of Sikhism.

Top athletes question timing of national athletics New Delhi (IANS): Current and former athletes have criticised the timing of the ongoing 54th National Open Athletics Championships here saying that holding such a meet at the very

end of the season serves little purpose and could in fact be detrimental to the players’ interests, defeating the very purpose behind the championships. The event comes at the end of a gru-

elling season which saw India’s top track and field athletes participate in two major events -- Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. The Nov 2-5 championships, being held at the

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here, got off to a depleted start as several top athletes withdrew due to injuries and fatigue. Asian Games silver medallist Manju

Bala Singh opted out of the women’s hammer throw event. National record holder race walker K.T. Irfan also pulled out citing a swollen ankle. But the most shocking was Asiad silver medallist Khushbir Kaur quitting during the 20 km race walk Sunday. Khushbir had completed nearly half the race when her coach Alexander Artsybashev forced her to stop, concerned that she may get injured. Most top athletes, working with public sector companies, made themselves available only for the sake of their employers. Several performed considerably below their best and admitted as much when asked about it, adding that they were not much concerned about their performance as it “meant little” in their scheme of things. “After Asian Games I did not get much time to train. The schedule was really punishing. I trained for only two-three days to prepare for this competition. But I was confident of winning despite the lack of training,” M. Poovamma told IANS after winning the women's 400m gold here. The Asiad bronze medallist said that it is difficult to find motivation after two back-to-back mega events and revealed that she did not give it her best to prevent picking up an injury. “Taking risk isn’t wise in these circumstances. Compared to other tracks, this track is not well maintained. Other facilities are also not good. I am not happy with the facilities provided," said Poovamma. “I turned up for my employers ONGC. Running this event doesn’t matter to me. I am not concerned with whatever time I register here. This was the last meet of a long season and I am glad that it got over,” the 24-year-old added. Her 4X400m relay teammates Mandeep Kaur and Priyanka Panwar, who claimed the Asiad gold, also skipped the event. Legendary athlete P.T. Usha also echoed Poovamma’s sentiments, saying that the championships should have taken place in August before the Asian Games. “This event should have been held before the two mega events. It would have proved to be a great warm-up event and given the athletes a lot of confidence. But hosting it now serves no purpose,” Usha said. The 'Payyoli Express' added that the athletes had no motivation to participate. She also blasted the poor facilities and infrastructure for the event. “Athletes are running this event for the sake of their employers. What is the point of running well in these championships now, after the season has ended? If your mind is willing to run and perform, then only you run fast and win,” Usha said.

Shimla bikers conquer 3,650-metre-high peak

Shimla (IANS): Four bikers from the Himachal Pradesh capital have created a record by conquering the 3,650 metrehigh Churdhar peak, the highest mountain in the Shivaliks, an event organiser said Tuesday. The four riders - Ankush Arya,

Gurman Reen, Shiven Sharma and Sanchit Sood - were part of the Hero Action Team. They created a record by conquering the Churdhar peak in Sirmaur district for the first time on mountain bikes, team manager Ashish Sood told IANS. The peak is located at an eleva-

tion of 3,650 metres above sea level and the entire track was off-road and inhospitable. The event was organised by the Himalayan Adventure Sports and Tourism Promotion Association (HASTPA), a Shimla-based club. "It was an adventurous expedition and a lifetime experience with lots of thrill. During the expedition people were excited and shocked at the same time as the paths where they were scared to walk, that very same route and the Churdhar peak was conquered by us on the mountain bikes," team captain Arya told IANS. The hike started from Nauradhar. The first section was 20 km uphill. The route was very tough and only 20 per-

cent of it was "ride-able". "A leopard was spotted on the way. It gave a quick glance and pounced away," he said. "The last three km were impossible to even walk on but the grit and passion of the boys kept them riding and they rode on all the way up to Churdhar, much to the surprise of the

local people who thought the boys were crazy and were on a suicide mission," Ashish Sood said. Another rider Sanchit Sood, who is a Class 10 student, said: "The return was even more joyous as it was fast flowing single track downhill except for the first two km. We did the whole

stretch in four hours whereas we have taken a little over 10 hours to reach the top." HASTPA every year organises the MTB Himalaya rally, billed as the third toughest mountain biking event in the world after the Trans-Alps Challenge (Europe) and the TransRockies (Canada).

PCB chairman Shaharyar lauds Misbah, team Lahore (IANS): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar M. Khan congratulated captain Misbah-ul-Haq, head coach Waqar Younis, team manager Moin Khan and the entire support staff after the team registered a dominant 2-0 win over Australia in the two-Test series in the UAE. "I wish to felicitate you (Misbah) on this great Test series victory. Team Pakistan under your dynamic leadership played positive cricket and performed with great aplomb to outclass a top team like Australia," Shaharyar was quoted as saying by Dawn online. In the first Test, Pakistan rode on Younus Khan's twin centuries to beat the Michael Clarke-led side by 221 runs

while in the second Test, Younus' double ton and Misbah's centuries in each of the innings, guided the Asian team to a 356-run win. Young left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar bagged 14 wickets and leg-spinner Yasir Shah took 12 wickets to play crucial roles in Pakistan's first series win against Australia in 20 years.

We can help you invest with all of the return and none of the risk.

"Pakistan's batting throughout was a revelation, with Younis Khan and yourself in the forefront while youngsters Sarfraz Ahmed, Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad also made superb contributions. Our inexperienced bowling also gave an above par display, and, above all, our fielding showed discernible improvement,” the PCB chief added. “It was thus a great all-round performance, and for this the contribution of the coaching staff headed by Waqar Younis and manager Moin Khan must also be acknowledged. Whitewashing Australia shall remain a proud moment in our cricket history as well as a source of pride for the whole nation,” Shaharyar stated.

AN inspiration for many, Shah Rukh Khan says struggling actors should be concerned about their craft rather than worrying about their looks. Asked whether he would like to give any tips to struggling actors, he said: "You have to work hard and focus on acting. Yes PR and portfolio are all important, but acting is more important. Focus on acting." Now a superstar, Shah Rukh had entered the movies with "Deewana", in which he played a second fiddle, and worked his way up to be a superstar. "Nobody becomes an actor by planning things. Don't focus on your clothes or make-up. Focus on your acting," he said on the sidelines of his birthday celebrations. SRK turned 49 Sunday. "There are a lot of people responsible for who I am today. I don't think I can ever play character Shah Rukh Khan in any film because I don't think my personal life is so important. I think I am too small a person and have a long way to go," added SRK. (IANS)

Shekhar Kapur to direct Sujoy not on Facebook 'Tiger's Curse'

INTERNATIONALLY known Indian director Shekhar Kapur of "Elizabeth" fame has been roped in to direct an adventure saga titled "Tiger's Curse".

The project will be introduced by Lotus Entertainment at the American Film Market, reports variety.com. Based on the first in a series of novels by Colleen Houck, "Tiger's Curse" has been adapted by Julie Plec, creator of "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals". The project will be produced by Ineffable Pictures's Raphael Kryszek and Jesse Israel along with Lotus Entertainment's Bill

Johnson and Jim Seibel and Kapur. The novel centers on a woman who learns that she has a powerful connection with a white tiger named Ren, while working at a circus in Oregon over the summer. When a mysterious stranger arrives to reclaim Ren and return him to his native India, the woman learns that the tiger is a prince who is the victim of a 300-year-old curse. (IANS)

Jimmy Shergill takes break from production HE made a successful foray into production, but now actor-producer Jimmy Shergill wants to do one thing at time and hence has decided to stick to acting for the time being. He had turned producer in 2011 with Punjabi film "Dharti" and the Rs.4.2 crore movie earned Rs.7.5 crore at the box office. "I just want to focus on acting right now. I have done production and it's a full time job. For the time being, I have taken break from production as I want to give all my time to acting," said the actor who is busy shooting for "Gun Pe Done". He has always wowed all and sundry with his performance and the latest being "Fugly". "I am extremely happy with the kind of response I got for

my performance in 'Fugly'. It was a huge challenge for me to do an out an out negative character. It was a difficult role. So I am enjoying

this phase as an actor," he added. In "Gun Pe Done" he plays a huge fan of late actor Feroz and said that his character is a struggling actor who feels he is an expert at mimicking actor Feroz Khan. "But the fact is that he is a bad actor," he said and added: "We are trying to add humour with realism. I hope it will be an interesting film. It's a new experience for me. Not that I have not done comedy, but this is a nice break for me." Directed by Abhik Bhanu, "Gun Pe Done" is being produced under the banner of Pioneer Films & Entertainment LLP. Jimmy headlines the cast that also features Sanjay Mishra and Vijay Raaz among others. (IANS)

HE may be tweeting regularly on his Twitter handle, but “Kahaani” director Sujoy Ghosh hasn't joined the Facebook frenzy yet. He clarified it through his tweet. “Just to clarify i am not on Facebook nor any plans to be.. twitter kaafi hai...,” the director,

who loves to spend free time curling up with a book and a cup of coffee, posted Sunday. “Doors & windows shouldn't open on their own. not after you have closed them & sat down peacefully with a book & a coffee. drenched in coffee,” he wrote in one of his posts. (IANS)

MOVIE REVIEW

Before I Go To Sleep (PG) ***

Compare the theme of Before I Go to Sleep with the hit Barbra Streisand Memories at your own peril. Being unable to remember is at the heart

Cinemas and select Cineplex Odeon cites around B.C. Bedridden much of the time is apparent victim Christine Lucas. Showing just the right degree of vulnerability for this troubled soul is consummate Australian actress Nicole Kidman (The Hours). Left much of the time Alone by her caring well-meaning husband Ben this desperate

Award winning Colin Firth (The King's Speech). People in trouble often seek help. Medical advice for this lost at sea lady comes by way of Dr. Nash, a caring psychologist who takes a shine to this complicated case. Mark Strong is indeed strong as this wanting to help professional. Ask any filmgoer what goes into making a good thriller and they will tell

Rowan Joffe hits the triactor as this 92 minute ramps up the slow-building pressure to it's ultimate fever pitch. Before I

Go To Sleep largely succeeds because you buy into the relationship between Firth and Kidman. Keep a tight grip

2014 Honda Civic Coupe: Good looks, fun and practicality in this coupe By Autoreviewman In a gradual process of evolution there are some changes to the 2014 Honda Civic Coupe that address safety interiors and engines. Compact, swoopy and with some very attractive exterior and interior features, the 2014 Civic Coupe range

starts with the $20,569 (all prices include freight and predelivery inspection fees) base model LX. Tweaks for the 2014 Civic Coupe include dramatic new front and rear styling, glitzy wheels, a more aggressive stance and extra high tech gadgetry ,

A 1.8-litre four-cylinder gas engine powers the base model Honda Civics (except the Si version) and delivers 143 horsepower and 129 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is not an exotic direct injection or turbocharged in the interests of keeping running costs down.

With the new Continually Variable Transmission unit it delivers impressive fuel economy numbers. Standard features on our fully loaded tester included Heated front seats; LaneWatch blind spot display; Display Audio System/HondaLink/Rearview camera/HandsFreeLink/Blueto oth wireless mobile phone interface; AM/FM/CD audio system/MP3/Windows Media Audio playback capability and 6 speakers/USB device connector; leather-wrapped steering wheel/cruise control; power moonroof; automatic climate control with air-filtration system; power windows with auto-up/down driver’s window and Smart Entry with Push Button start. The Civic Coupe EX trim level adds heated front seats, multifunction leather steering wheel and a large centre dash screen that houses the upgraded sound system and rear backup camera screen and the new camera derived lane change safety system. Top dog in the Civic Coupe line up is the $29,003 Civic Coupe EX-L Navi that adds leather

seating, a navigation system and a continuously variable automatic transmission, (CVT) as standard. The CVT is a $1,260 option on other models that replaces the standard fivespeed manual gearbox. Interior treatments relating to the Civic coupe mean better quality materials, fit and finish. A roomy front cabin features plush seats and plenty of leg and head room whilst the rear is only marginally tighter. The dash is very cool and the technology level is very high with the Civic Coupe EX’s new Display Audio capacitive touchscreen- a seven inch color screen that controls a lot of the car’s functions and features. Of note is the new HondaLink system, an application-based platform that allows smartphone connectivity and some internet and cloud-based content and information. Apple iPhone user will be happy to know the HondaLink system allows the use of the hands-free Siri personal assistant feature on iphone5 and newer versions. Another brilliant feature is Honda’s LaneWatch, a camera integrated into the passenger-

side rearview mirror that shows a shoulder check image on the Display Audio screen of what you would normally see if you visually checked. It is a great idea, although I would use it as supplementary aid not a replacement for proper visual checks. (Just my thoughts anyways!) On the road, the Civic is fast and nimble on its feet. Steering is tactile with an easy light touch, the suspension is also tuned for a softer ride than its competition-meaning the Civic is a tad easier to survive in on long drives and in the cut and thrust of everyday commutes. We had the manual gearbox which offers crisp, fast satisfyingshifts. Natural Resources Canada estimate the Civics fuel economy at (L/100 km) 6.7 city; 5.0 highway; To sum up the 2014 Honda Civic is a very fun to drive, comfortable and fuel-efficient sporty coupe with a premium look and feel. Highly recommended. 2014 Honda Civic Coupe EX Price from $20,955 plus taxes options and destination charges.

2014 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid: Premium luxury sedan offers everything you need! By Autoreviewman

With a redesign from last year, the 2014 Lincoln MKZ is a midsize luxury premium sedan that carries over largely unchanged for the new model year. The sleek, modern body still looks good with its distinctive signature split-winged grille, graceful C-pillars, and fashionable high deck lid with an integrated spoiler. It looks tightly styled and the full-width LED taillight panel and rear diffuser with four square tail exhaust outlets finish off an attractive, handsome car. The 2014 Lincoln offers a very good engine choice, namely three to be exact:

a turbocharged four-cylin-

der, an optional V6 and a hybrid powertrain in the MKZ Hybrid as we tested. The MKZ Hybrid’s drivetrain consists of a new 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain with lithium-ion batteries with a power-split electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT). The ‘power split’ allows the electric and gas engines to work together or separately to maximize efficiency. The 2014 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid we tested is based priced at $44,450 and combines a 2.0-liter fourcylinder with an electric motor for 188 total hp. The hybrid is front-wheel-

drive only and uses a con-

tinuously variable transmission (CVT) to return impressive fuel economy. On the road the MKZ Hybrid rides as smooth and comfortable as most Lincolns, although any sogginess and lazy damping has been dialed out for more control and road feel. The compliant suspension soaks up road imperfections, and twisty sections courtesy of the standard adaptive suspension. In fact the MKZ's adjustable suspension and refined, yet not overly sensitive electrically assisted steering make quick work of challenging roads. Lincoln's new three-mode Drive Control

technology arrives as standard kit and can alter the settings of the MKZ's continuously controlled damping suspension and electric power steering. Choose Sport mode and the suspension and steering firms up for more feel and control. Comfort mode make for a softer ride and Normal mode is ideal as the default setting for a mix of everyday typical driving situations. The interior is also hushed and quite thanks

to the effective noise cancelling inside the cabin. The MKZ Hybrid’s 2.0-

litre Atkinson cycle fourcylinder hybrid drivetrain arrives with lithium-ion batteries and a powersplit electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). The ‘power split’ allows the electric and gas engines to work together or separately to maximize efficiency It generated 188 combined horsepower and 129 foot pounds of torque MKZ Hybrid had a Government of Canada fuel economy rating of 4.2 litres/100 km

in the city and 4.3 on the highway. It works smoothly, quietly and effi-

ciently with no drama. To sum up, the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is an edgy technology- laden car that plays very well in a demanding sector and is well worth a look at. It competes against some very high end machinery that offer a lot of prestige, yet the MKZ manages to hold its own with a mix of good looks, fuel economy superb technology and safety. In fact if you compare what the MKZ offers for a lower price in terms of features and equipment you will be very surprised at just how much value for money it is. This is a wonderfully smooth, comfortable and relaxing premium sedan all will like. Highly recommended.By Autoreviewman 2014 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid priced from $44,450 Price as tested with options, packages AC TX and shipping $50,350

Indo-Canadian Voice World | Saturday, Nov 08, 2014 Romaine lettuce is a fantastic leafy green that contains all 8 of the essential amino acids. It is also high in omega-3, calcium, and iron and has more vitamin C than an orange. Romaine is rich in beta carotene, folate, and vitamins E & K. The beta carotene and folic acid in romaine lettuce can reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke, while the vitamins E & K can help balance blood sugar, strengthen muscles and bones, and build a healthy immune system. It can also help to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol and its high silicon content helps to repair and renew joints, bones, arteries, and connective tissues. Romaine is also unique in that it contains very low levels of oxalic acid making it an ideal leafy green for those who are prone to kidney stones and/or joint pain. Its antispasmodic properties aid the cardiovascular system and the digestive tract. Romaine lettuce contains sedative compounds that relax the nerves and calm the body. It can help prevent nightmares and provide support for a good nights sleep. Romaine is an excellent addition to smoothies. Blend a head of romaine with two oranges, this has more calcium than a glass of milk. Or make a smoothie with bananas, blueberries, romaine, and a little coconut water for a protein & antioxidant energy boost. For salads, chopped romaine makes an excellent crunchy base for all of your fixings. Or try stuffing
