economic health. Increased exports and investment would "more than offset the effect of an unfavourable monsoon on agricultural growth earlier in the year", the 188-nation watchdog said in its October World Economic Outlook (WEO). "The post-election recovery of confidence in India also provides an opportunity" for India "to embark on its much-needed structural reforms", it said. After "several years of slowing growth prospects",

the WEO suggested, "It is time for major emerging market economies to turn to important structural reforms to raise growth more robustly". For India, the suggested agenda included removing infrastructure bottlenecks in the power sector and implementing reforms to education, labour, and product markets to raise competitiveness and productivity. "In emerging market economies, lower potential growth is the dominating

factor," the WEO said, suggesting, "For these economies as a whole, potential growth is now forecast to be 1.5 percent lower than in 2011." "Here again, differentiation is the rule. China is sustaining high growth, but slightly lower growth in the future is seen to be a healthy development," it said. On the other hand, WEO noted, "India has recovered from its relative slump; thanks in part to effective policies and a renewal of confidence, growth is expected once

again to exceed 5 percent." With recent monetary tightening, disinflation should continue in India, it said. These projections, it said, were predicated on the assumption that key drivers supporting the recovery in advanced economies including moderating fiscal consolidation and highly accommodative monetary policy - remain in place. Projections also assume a decline in geopolitical tensions, supporting some recovery in stressed economies, it said.

India cautions Pakistan at UN its forces 'will respond to provocation'

United Nations (IANS): In a series of back-andforth exchanges at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), India cautioned Pakistan that its forces are ready and "will respond to provocations" and that firing on innocent civilians will only hamper normalisation of relations. Responding to Pakistan raising Tuesday the recent exchange of fire along the Line of Control, Indian UN Mission's First

Secretary Devesh Uttam said, "Let everyone be assured that our armed forces and paramilitary forces are fully ready and they will respond to provocation." Ignoring the casualties on the Indian side, Pakistan's UN Ambassador Masood Khan had told the UNGA that four people had been killed by the Indian firing and said that the UN Military Observer Group (UNMOGIP) "must

be enabled to play its role in monitoring the ceasefire." He also recalled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's assertions last month at the UNGA on UN having a role in the Kashmir dispute. In response, Uttam cited the casualties sustained by India. He said, "It is a matter of deep regret that Pakistan has violated the ceasefire and their unprovoked firing has led to loss of civilian

lives on the Indian side. Six persons have been killed and 50 injured." He added, "The onus of creating a positive environment is on Pakistan which is utterly failing to do so." Setting off a second round of exchanges, Pakistan's delegate responded by reiterating Islamabad's assertions about the casualties, but injected a conciliatory note while also raising the cancellation of bilat-

by Pakistan." In exercising India's right of reply to the Pakistan's second round, the Indian delegate said, "We reject all the untenable and unsolicited remarks made by Pakistan." Pakistan tenaciously tried to start a third round saying that a working boundary had to be preserved and reiterated comments about the role of the UNMOGIP.

eral talks. "We also extended a hand of friendship to India," the delegate said. "However, first the abrupt cancellation of (foreign) secretary-level talks and now this, unprovoked firing is cause of deep concern. We hope the Indian side would give peace a chance." The delegate also said, "It is sad that the Indian Government failed to restrain its forces despite strong diplomatic protest

Congress steps up attack on PM, terms him `habitual liar'

New Delhi (IANS): Stepping up its attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his jibe at the party on a land deal concerning Congress president Sonia Gandhi's sonin-law Robert Vadra, the party Tuesday termed him a "habitual liar" and accused him of trying to mislead the people of Haryana and the Election Commission. "The prime minister is speaking a lie. It has become a habit with him. PM is a habitual liar," Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said here. Modi at a poll rally in Haryana Monday referred to a newspaper report and urged the Election Commission to take "appropriate action" over

NEW

the Haryana government's nod to a controversial land deal between Vadra and real estate giant DLF. Ahmed also referred to the newspaper report and said there was no violation of the pre-election Model Code of Conduct. He said the deputy commissioner of Gurgaon had written July 16 that the mutation concerning the land deal was valid. Ahmed said the Model Code of Conduct for the assembly polls in Haryana came into force Sep 12 and the prime minister had said that decision taken July 16 was a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. "It is a lie to the Election Commission. It is a lie to

people. He is trying to befool people," Ahmed said. Ahmed also said that the Supreme Court had in October 2013 dismissed a PIL about land deal concerning Vadra. Answering a query on ceasefire violations by Pakistan, Ahmed said civilians were being killed and there was no full-time defence minister. He said the prime minister frequently made tweets but had not tweeted about ceasefire violations nor was speaking about it in his speeches. Ahmed said Modi had talked before the Lok Sabha elections about the need of having "a 56-inch chest" to deal with border violations.

Jayalalithaa's bail plea rejected, AIADMK stunned

Bangalore/Chennai (IANS): The Karnataka High Court Tuesday rejected the bail plea of jailed former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, abruptly ending frenzied celebrations by her supporters after one of her lawyers earlier said she had got conditional bail. Justice A.V. Chandrashekara, who heard Jayalalithaa's petition, also declined to suspend her four-year jail term even after Special Public Prosecutor G. Bhavani Singh submitted he had no objection to her bail application. The AIADMK leader was convicted and sentenced for four years and fined Rs.100 crore for corruption by a special court here Sep 27. "No sufficient grounds for suspension of the sentence. The Supreme Court clearly indicated that corruption violates human rights and leads to economic imbalance," the

years of simple imprisonment. She was also fined Rs.100 crore under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The other three were also sentenced to four years in jail and fined Rs.10 crore each. The bail petitions were posted for hearing by a regular bench Tuesday by a special bench of the high court Oct 1. Meanwhile, fearing mass protests, police imposed a ban on the assembly of five or more people in a onekilometer area around the high court here. In Tamil Nadu, tens of thousands of Jayalalithaa supporters across the state erupted in joy after media outlets reported, on the strength of what an AIADMK lawyer had stated, that she had got conditional bail. AIADMK members, legislators and MPs gathered in larger numbers at the party

judge said in his interim order. The judge also found no prime facie ground for granting bail to the 66-yearold Jayalalithaa. Noted jurist Ram Jethmalani appeared for Jayalalithaa as defence counsel. The bail petitions of Jayalalithaa's associates former close associate Sasikala Natarajan, estranged former foster son V.K. Sudhakaran and former aide J. Ilavarasi were also rejected on the same grounds. Earlier, in his 90-minute deposition, Jethmalani assured the judge that his client (Jayalalithaa) would abide by any condition put forth for bail, as she was a law abiding citizen and would not flee the country. But this argument cut no ice with the judge. A special court here Sep 27 convicted Jayalalithaa for corruption when she was chief minister in 199196 and jailed her for four

headquarters in Chennai and at AIADMK offices across the state danced, burst crackers and distributed sweets. But the joyous scenes came to a grinding halt when it dawned that the "news" was wrong and that Jayalalithaa's prayer for bail had actually been turned down. The very same AIADMK activists -- men and women -- then turned emotional. Many women openly wailed. The celebrations turned into angry protests. Some were too stunned to speak. As tensions rose, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvan urged people to maintain calm and not to resort to any protests that would hurt the interests of ordinary citizens. He also said that protests held by Jayalalithaa supporters should not be linked to the AIADMK government headed by him since her jailing.

"His (Singh) condition has not improved and he is still in coma. A team of doctors is observing him," a senior doctor at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) told IANS here. "All medical care is being

given, but he is not responding well," added the doctor. According to the doctor, Jaswant Singh is being given total parenteral nutrition (TPN) which delivers nutrients intravenously when a patient is unable to eat on

his/her own. The 76-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital Aug 8 in critical condition after his family found him lying on the floor of his house in an unconscious state.

Exchange of fire along the Line of Control, PM says things will be fine

New Delhi/Jammu/United Nations/Mumbai (IANS): Pakistan Rangers continued to fire across the International Border with India through the night and well into Wednesday, killing at least two more people and injuring two dozen, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi said "everything will be fine soon". India was quick to retaliate at Pakistani firing, but the casualties on the other side were not known immediately. More than 20,000 residents of 30 villages along the International Border (IB) in Jammu region have been shifted to safer locations in view of continuing Pakistani firing, officials said. India's top military official said they were keen to resolve the ceasefire violations as Pakistan again raised the Kashmir issue at the UN. Prime Minister Modi, who attended the 'At Home' organised by Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha to mark the Air Force Day, asked about ceasefire violations by Pakistan said: "Everything will be fine soon." Modi also interacted with army chief General Dalbir Singh and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval ostensibly on the ceasefire violations by Pakistan. The latest string of Pakistan ceasefire violations on the 700 km-Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border

started Oct 3. The number of people killed in shelling and firing by Pakistan on civilian areas in Jammu region has now gone up to seven, while the number of the injured has shot up to 55. Panic gripped the border villages in Jammu as shells landed with fierce intensity on homes, shattering windows and leaving the walls with gaping holes and cracks. The bloodied and wounded were carried to hospital, while the locals scurried to safety and spent a sleepless night. Pakistani troopers fired through Tuesday night and did not stop as the day broke Wednesday. A senior police officer said: "Two people have died and five are injured in Pakistan mortar shelling in Chilyari village in Samba district today (Wednesday). The injured have been shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Jammu city for treatment." The two who died Wednesday were a 70-yearold woman and her daughter-in-law, the officer said. "BSF is also retaliating effectively to silence Pakistan guns in the area," the officer added. Meanwhile, sources said a high-level meeting was held in the union home ministry over ceasefire violations, which was attended by Home Secretary Anil Goswami and other senior

officials. They said the home secretary, later, briefed Doval about the situation. In retaliation to Pakistan targeting civilian habitations in Jammu and Kashmir, the union home ministry Wednesday put on hold a scheduled flag meeting between Pakistan and Indian paramilitary forces to discuss the recent hostilities. As many as 20 people, including 15 civilians, were injured in overnight Pakistani firing at the border. "Four army soldiers were injured in Pakistan firing on the LoC in Poonch district, one BSF trooper and 15 civilians were injured in firing by Pakistan Rangers on the International Border in Jammu district during the night," a senior police officer told IANS in Jammu. "Pakistan has again started firing at BSF positions and civilian areas in Hira Nagar sector of the border in Kathua district Wednesday morning," he said. Pakistan dragged the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) into the current situation along the Line of Control. "UNMOGIP must be enabled to play its role in monitoring the ceasefire," Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN Masood Khan told the General Assembly Tuesday.

He said: "...We call upon the Indian government to immediately cease fire and help us preserve tranquility." The current round to cross-

border firings resumed after an almost month-long lull. It has been described by Indian officials as the worst ceasefire violations since 2003.

Films with mixed reviews cross Rs.100-crore mark: Hrithik

HE values critics' opinion but at the same time Hrithik Roshan says that surprisingly all the movies which opened to mixed reviews managed to gross over Rs.100 crore. Happy and contented, the star now plans to have at least two films in a year. Case in point is his just released "Bang Bang", which banged the box office by earning Rs.200 crore in just five days despite not so overwhelming response from the critics. It not only had a tremendous run at the box office, but also minted Rs.201.51 crore in five days. "Every opinion matters to me personally. Whichever films have crossed Rs.100 crore in Indian cinema has got mixed reviews, so I respect them," he said.

Although the box office was not too crowded when "Bang Bang" came out, it had to share the space with "Haider". The grim and gritty tale was in total contrast to Hrithik's typical potboiler laden with flying bullets, racing cars, etc.

So far, most of his successes came from his father and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan's stable, including his last hit "Krrish 3". But this Sidharth Anand's directorial venture, which has been produced by Fox Star Studios at a budge of Rs.140

crore, broke the opening day record of "Krrish 3" by earning Rs.27.54 crore on the first day. And the success brings satisfaction for Hrithik. "We did not increase the ticket prize, our film was not a solo release and still it has surpassed the collections of 'Krrish 3', so I am very happy," said the 40year-old. Asked what is his father's reaction on "Bang Bang" surpassing the box office collection of "Krrish", he said: "I am very happy, but I don't know what my father is thinking." "It's a one step ahead for me and it's a growth. Start has been great, it crossed Rs.100 crore mark and that's a big victory." What adds to his joy is that his children - sons Hrehaan and Hridhaan - have given it a

thumbs up. "I wanted my children to like the film. They were so excited that I had to prepare them before making them watch the film." "They saw the late night show and post the picture, they said that it's the best film I have ever done. I am so happy and that reaction is the most important reaction for me," said the star delightedly. Known for being choosy and taking a break after each film, Hrithik has changed the rules now. He said, "I am pushing myself to have regular release. From the start of my career, I wanted to do two to three films in a year. Now, I will plan my years in such a way that I will have two releases in a year," he said. (IANS)

SRK shares AbRam's photograph on Eid

ON the festive occasion of Eid, superstar Shah Rukh Khan chose to share a photograph of himself cuddling his youngest son AbRam, who was born through surrogacy last year. During late night Monday, the 48-yearold tweeted a photograph in which his son is dressed in white and is seen playing with toys. The doting dad is seen kissing the "littlest one". “Eid Al Adha Mubarak to everyone. May all have the happiness that life has to offer. The littlest one wishes you too," Shah Rukh captioned the picture. AbRam was born prematurely by several months. SRK also has two teenage children - son Aryan and daughter Suhana - with wife Gauri. Shivya's case of mistaken identity

TELEVISION actress Shivya Pathania was in for a pleasant surprise recently when she was mistaken for Bollywood's actress Sonakshi Sinha here recently during promotions for her debut show "Humsafars". “When were in Lucknow Sep 17 for the launch of our show, there were some people who were saying Sonakshi Sinha has come. Initially, I did not realise it, but later I came to know that they were referring to me. I was quite surprised,” Shivya said in a statement. “Sonakshi is very pretty and if people think I resemble her, then it’s surely a compliment. However, I would like to be known as Shivya,” she added. Shivya, who was crowned Miss Shimla in 2013, is seen as an aspiring fashion designer in the Sony TV's weekly show, which is aired at 10.30 p.m. (IANS)

US awards for India-born Stanford scientist, scholar

Bangalore (IANS): Indiaborn scientist Arogyaswami Joseph Paulraj and mathematics scholar Himanshu Asnani at Standford University in the Silicon Valley have been awarded prizes by the Marconi Society in Washington. Paulraj, 69, was honoured Tuesday with the prestigious Marconi Prize for his pioneering work on developing wireless technology to transmit and receive data at high speed. Asnani, 27, received the Society's Paul Baran Young Scholar Award for contributing to point-topoint and multi-terminal channel coding and source coding problems. Named after radio inventor and Nobel laureate Guglielmo Marconi(1874-1937), Marconi Society awards annually individuals whose work and influence emulate the principle of creativity in service to humanity. Marconi's daughter Gioia Marconi Braga had set up the society in 1974 through an endowment. Paulraj, donated his cash prize of $100,000 (Rs.60 lakh) to the Society's young scholar programme. Asnani was also pre-

sented with a cash prize of $4,000 (Rs.2.4 lakh). India-born American scientist and Hitachi America professor of engineering, emeritus at Stanford Thomas Kailath presented the awards to the achievers. "It has been a privilege to have known Paulraj as a student, a research fellow and a warm colleague for many years," Pune-born Kailath said at the award ceremony. After receiving the award, Paulraj said the society was playing a key role through recognition and scholarships to enhance social, economic and cultural values. "As it's an honour to be named a fellow of Marconi Society, I will do best to be worthy of it. This is the highest recognition in the ICT (information and communications technology), which is significant for India's growth," Paulraj told IANS from Washington. Overwhelmed by the honour at a young age, Asnani credited his parents and teachers for their love and guidance during his career pursuit. "I dedicate this award to my mentor and spiritual guide Srila Prabhupada, founder of Iskon (International

Society for Krishna Consciousness) and whose teachings had a great impact in my life," Asnani told IANS. "Wisdom of the east should come together with the technology of the west to create a spirit of selfless giving to society and humanity at large," Asnani observed. Paulraj joins a select group of IT pioneers who received the Marconi prize in past such as World Wide Web (www) creator Tin Berners-Lee, father of internet Vint Cerf, Google co-founder Larry Page and mobile phone developer Martin Cooper. "To have three generations of Indian achievers in ICT - Kailath, Paulraj and Asnani - at an event is a testament to the contribution Indians are making at the cutting-edge of t e c h n o l o g y , " I n d i a Te c h O n l i n e . c o m editor Anand Parthasaraty told IANS here Saturday. Indian consul general at San Francisco N. Parthasarathi and Indiaborn Microsoft researcher Aakanksha Chowdhery, first women to receive the Marconi young scholar award in 2012, participated in the award ceremony. "Paulraj's contributions

to wireless technology and the resulting benefit to humankind, are indisputable. Every WiFi (wireless fidelity) router and 4G phone uses Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) technology pioneered by him," Society chairman David Payne said at the event. MIMO boosts data rate by creating multiple parallel spatial data streams and is the key to the latest wireless broadband networks like 4G cellular. Born in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, about 360 km from here, Paulraj was also honoured with the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal in 2011 for his profound work on theoretical foundations of MIMO. Asnani, who hails from Kota in Rajasthan, is also a system engineer at the Swedish telecom major's R&D centre in the Silicon Valley, off the US west coast, besides pursuing doctorate (Ph.D) in mathematics at Stanford University's Electrical Engineering School. Graduating from IITBombay in electrical engineering in 2009, Asnani went to the US to do masters (MS) at Stanford and enrolled for Ph.D in the same subject.

New Delhi (IANS): The Indian men's hockey team returned home early Sunday from Incheon, South Korea, to a heroes' welcome, with fans turning out in large numbers to receive the Asian Games champions. Teary-eyed and overjoyed fans hugged and cheered the players and support staff as they stepped out of the Indira Gandhi international airport. The team got for India its third Asian Games gold -- and qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics Games. Goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh, the hero in the thrilling final against eight-time champions and holders Pakistan, was the most sought after at the airport. Sreejesh, who made two brilliant saves in shootouts after regulation play ended 1-1 to help India clinch the title after 16 long years, reiterated there was no pressure on the team in the final. "There was no pressure on us in the final against Pakistan. We were confident of winning. "When they were leading at the end

Narinder Batra congratulated the players, saying they didn't lose their focus in a high-pressure encounter against Pakistan. "I am happy the boys tackled the pressure till the last shootout. Having clinched the gold, the team has made us proud and the best thing about the team is it succeeded in its strategy and

game plan. "(But) I still feel there is a lot of room for improvement."

of the first quarter, we still had no pressure as we were aware we had three more quarters left. "We knew we would score and win. In the penalty shootout, the entire team was relaxed and had the confidence in me," said Sreejesh. "There was no pressure on me. I knew I could stop them although they had beaten Malaysia in shootouts. I am happy I did it for my country. The focus now is on the Champions Trophy of December," he added. Captain Sardar Singh said the team worked hard and deserved to be champions. "I am proud of my team mates. Thanks to all the players, this win wouldn't have been possible," he said. "Our team was indeed well prepared. We will keep on improving with every match we play in the future." The team was received by Hockey India president Mariamma Koshy and other officials. Golden Temple Plaza to be dedicated to devotees on Diwali: Sukhbir Badal

Amritsar: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, reviewing the progress of ongoing construction work of the Golden Temple Plaza being developed at a cost of Rs.78 crore [Rs.780 million], said that it would be

devotees. Badal also took the notice of congestion on the main roads of the city caused by pushcarts and directed officers of Municipal Corporation of Amritsar to remove all ‘rehris’ selling fruits and

dedicated to devotees at this Diwali as the work of this prestigious project was at an advanced stage of completion. Visiting the plaza site, Badal asked the authorities to ensure the completion well before this Diwali to make the upcoming festival special for devotees coming to pay obeisance from all over the world. He directed the officers to complete the internal decoration and beautification of the Plaza besides reducing congestion around it by strictly prohibiting vehicles near it for the sake of the

veggies on the sides of the main roads. He also asked them to initiate the cleanliness process of all roads, streets and other places only during night hours with heavy machines to avoid hindering traffic during the day. Badal said the work of giving a traditional look to the passage from Hall Gate to Golden Temple should be started from the Sri Darbar Sahib side by ensuring the completion of first phase up to the Town Hall. He said this project would give a unique and traditional shape and look

to the whole passage with world class landscaping, fountains, trees and beautification. He said the electricity poles should also be removed. On the setting up of the proposed Apollo Hospital, Badal asked the district administration to identify the appropriate piece of land for this purpose so that construction work on this project could start as soon as possible. He said that with this project, the holy city would become a hub of healthcare with the availability of world class treatment facilities. Badal also directed the local administration to engage the services of world class companies for landscaping of the entire city, roads, roundabouts and other prominent places so it could be developed as a the main tourist place in the country. Badal also asked them to prepare the design of the Circuit House accordingly. Issuing strict directions to all officers, Badal said any kind of laxity would not be tolerated and the responsible officers would have to face the consequences since the world class development of the holy city was one of the top agendas of the SAD-BJP alliance.

Badal also reviewed the ongoing work of the widening of roads, BRTS, beautification of the roundabouts, the entry

gates under construction, the War Memorial, Gobindgarh Fort, Solid Waste Management, Sewerage Treatment Plant,

Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath Memorial, and world class parking at the Wagah border.

ChaiTime How to Maintain Good Eye Health 1. Eat for Good Vision Protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts, studies show. Regularly eating these foods can help lead to good eye health:

SUDOKU

Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish Eggs, nuts, beans, and other nonmeat protein sources Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which makes you less likely to get obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults. HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. 2. Quit Smoking Smoking makes you more likely to get cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. If you've tried to quit smoking before and started smoking again, keep trying. The more times you try to quit

smoking, the more likely you are to succeed. 3. Wear Sunglasses The right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound lenses help protect your eyes from the side. Polarized lenses reduce glare when driving. If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. It's still a good idea to wear sunglasses for more protection, though.

5 . L o o k A w a y Fr o m t h e Computer Screen Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause: Eyestrain

Some people may need glasses to help with contrast, glare, and eye strain when using a c o m p u t e r. Po s i t i o n y o u r computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen. Try to avoid glare on your computer from windows and lights. Use an antiglare screen if needed. Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it so that your feet are flat on the floor. If your eyes are dry, blink more. Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15-minute break.

Saif named brand ambassador of Olympic Gold Quest

ACTOR-PRODUCER Saif Ali Khan has been appointed the brand ambassador of Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) to raise funds for the training of the athletes supported by the not-forprofit organisation. He has committed a contribution

of Rs.20 lakh annually to the NGO until the Rio Olympics 2016. OGQ is co-founded by sports legends Geet Sethi and Prakash Padukone. As brand ambassador, Saif, the son of late cricketer star Mansoor Ali Khan

Pataudi and film star Sharmila Tagore, will garner donations and contributions for the benefit of athletes. He will also spread awareness about OGQ, its mission, vision and impact. "I am thrilled to be the

brand ambassador of OGQ as I love all sports. OGQ has been doing wonderful work to help Indian athletes in their quest for Olympic glory. These athletes are the true heroes and we must all do our bit to support them," Saif said in a statement. "I'm announcing a contribution of Rs.20 lakh per annum to OGQ until the

Rio 2016 Olympics. This will go towards the training of the athletes supported by OGQ. In addition to this, we will be doing a lot of fund raising events for Olympic Gold Quest," he added. OGQ currently supports 57 athletes who are training for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. (IANS)

LAUDING his son Abhishek Bachchan's initiative for the promotion of kabaddi, Hindi film veteran Amitabh Bachchan says the country is capable of excelling at multiple sporting events, if people put their heart, mind and business sense to it. Abhishek has lent the game of kabaddi a cool upmarket image by getting a stake in the Jaipur Pink Panthers franchise of the Pro-Kabaddi League. His team even won the inaugural championship. Talking about it, Big B said: "Yes, Abhishek owns a Kabaddi team, a team that has won the first championship of ProKabaddi. I am extremely happy for him and proud too in the way he went about encouraging the sport personally and individually." Do you feel, like we all do, that too much attention is given to cricket in

our country? "No. Too much attention is not being given to cricket. Not enough attention is being given to other sports," he said. The 71-year-old, who loves watching cricket and football, said: "We are a vast and massive country. We must garner and encourage and be proficient in many sporting events. If we put our hearts and minds and

business into them it should never be a problem to pick a team of 11, 7, 5, 4 or 2 players from 1.25 billion, a sixth of the entire population of the world! "Countries the world over get identified by the sport they excel in. India should be one of them too," added the megastar, whose son has also invested in a franchise of the Indian Super League football. (IANS)

Kill The Messenger (PG) **** Good journalism is truly a fine art. Truth at times can be stranger than fiction. Harken back to the days of Woodard and Bernstein to encounter investigative reporting with a more modern though equally if not more relevant twist with Kill The Messenger. Serious and sensational is this EOne Entertainment muted thriller that boasts a top talented cast now enthralling viewers at Select Cineplex Odeon Theatre around B.C. By now everyone is aware of the war on drugs. Kill The Messenger reveals the murky underbelly of corrupt government practices. Here it's up to a small town reporter named Mark Webb who somehow stumbles on a tangled web of drugs,

dirty money and a plan to fund rebels in Central America. Steady as a rock Jeremy Renner nails the character of one idealistic journalist willing to risk all to get at the truth. stellar cast helps turn this 112 minute drama into must see entertainment. Full of real footage of political leaders trying to sway the public this tale shows just how far some in government will go to hide the truth and deceive the public. patients. The 22-year-old singer-actress visited Children's Hospital Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon, reports eonline.com. "Selena took the time to stop and visit with each one, hear their stories, give hugs, share laughs and provide encouragement," the hospital said in a statement. "It was a much-needed lift for these children and their families during an incredibly difficult time." Sporting a "Team Connor" bracelet in honour of a patient, the singer posed for photos with children near their hospital beds. She even referred to one of her new friends as a "princess." "We are so grateful for genuine kindness and compassion for our patients, families and the staff who care for them," said the statement.

2014 Volkswagen Touareg Highline TDI: Luxury SUV offers the whole package By Autoreviewman The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI shares some

heritage with the Porsche Cayenne. Look at two in profile and the family resemblance is there. But

the Volkswagen is slightly less aggressive looking and a tad more handsome in a conservative ‘Mr Nice Guy”

friendly sort of way. In case you wonder the Touareg moniker comes from a tribe of nomadic people who live in North Africa and are famous for being great travelers. For 2014 there are few changes. The Touareg RLine trim level debuts with a sport-tuned suspension and special styling elements and all trims except Sport and R-Line receive an Easy Open liftgate with a foot sensor in the bumper for hands-free opening. Also included Park distance control added to Highline. Minor changes to the exterior including cool looking LED signature headlights and on our tester, 18- Inch “Tacora” alloy wheels set off a smart expensive looking SUV- which it is. Standard amenities include eight-way power driver and passenger seats, heated power door mirrors, 18-inch aluminum wheels, multi-function trip computer, 115V power outlet, Bluetooth and standard navigation system with eight-inch screen and 60gigabyte hard drive; plus, on the Comfortline TDI, a power liftgate. With a solid, refined exterior, the interior is also a standout. The fit, finish

and feel of the Touareg cabin is very impressive and makes some domestic luxury SUVS interiors look like they are “Fisher Price” in comparison. The Touareg's excellent ergonomics and no-nonsense functionality win hand down for comfort and form. The driver’s seat is amazing comfortable with a full range of height adjustability and even the bottom cushion tilts independently. The large available panoramic sunroof also makes the dark cabin somewhat light and airy. The interior dimensions of this roomy SUV make it great for tall and large adults with a surplus of head, leg and shoulder room. The Touareg’s rear cabin is also nice with a roomy backseat offering a mighty 6.3 inches of fore/aft travel. The seatbacks also recline and offer good thigh support and plenty of foot room for rear seat passengers. The rear seat also split 60/40. Note the rear seat cushions tilt forward and the seatbacks go down and so you gain a huge 32.1-cu ft cargo area behind the Touareg's backseat. Conveniently located power switches on the sides of the cargo bay

operate the power folding seats. On the road, the Touareg is very enjoyable to drive with a nice high driving position and superb visibility all around. The steering and handling is responsive and delightfully communicative. Long distance highways cruising is comfortable and without drama and should you need to, the big SUV is equally at home on rough trail thanks to its high ground clearance and long-travel suspension. Overall the VW Touareg is a smooth, efficient family hauler with lots of room. No major issues in the driving experience. But it is a large vehicle that needs to be handled with care in tight parking spots and crowded narrow urban streets. The diesel turbo engines known as the TDI is a superb stump puller of an engine and offers decent enough fuel economy and lots of power for hauling making the Touareg is a tasty SUV for the discerning. 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Highline Base price: $61,475 Price as tested - $64,895 including options and taxes

Nissan Sport Sedan Concept

Design has long been a differentiator between Nissan and its competitors and the The Sport Sedan Concept, a design study with a particu-

portions.” The Sport Sedan Concept joins a trio of advanced concepts that share signature design aspects that will be adapted to all future Nissans. Along with the Nissan

sportiness,” said Nakamura. “The roofline also contributes to the Sport Sedan Concept’s class-leading stance, which balances the look of the substantial lower body and a streamlined

lar emphasis on next-generation design and sporty style, was created to embody the essence of a true sports sedan – that rare execution of 4-door sedan with the aura of a real sports car. It previews a future production vehicle intended for owners with a passion for cuttingedge design and driving dynamics. “The Sport Sedan Concept shows a new, highly emotional and energetic design direction that takes Nissan’s legendary approach of applying sports car principles to a sedan to the next level,” said Nissan Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura. “The Sport Sedan Concept captures that essence with bold and exciting sports car design and pro-

Resonance and Friend-ME concepts that were introduced in 2013, the Sport Sedan Concept shares the new V-Motion front aspect, “floating” roof and boomerang-shaped headlights and taillights. As demonstrated by the three diverse concepts, these distinctive design cues will be incorporated into a range of body types from sedans to crossovers. The unique “floating” roof adds a sense of openness and lightness in contrast to traditional sedans’ heavy cabin appearance. “The innovative roofline, which is also prevalent on Resonance and Friend-ME, makes it seem as if there are no pillars at all, enhancing the sense of athleticism and

cabin.” The final exterior touch is the unique “Strad Amber” paint that was inspired by the craftsmanship and rich finish of noted classic violins – instruments capable of producing vibrant intensity at times and at other times a soft stillness. The elaborate candy colour paint finish is achieved through application of an orange-amber topcoat over a base of gold paint, creating a distinctive depth and bespoke richness. The Sport Sedan Concept’s interior also offers cues to future production designs. Premium materials are found throughout, with the use of diamond-shaped graphics on the quilted seats, stitching and panels enhancing the sense of dynamic motion.

Rather than traditional flat surfacing, the diamond treatment adds three-dimensionality. The edgy and geometric look was inspired by modern furniture, apparel and accessories. The interior also features high-contrast colours and facet metallic accents.

All these aspects finely express Nissan’s individual authenticity and modernity. The front-wheel drive Sport Sedan Concept is powered by a 300-plus horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine backed by a sport-tuned Xtronic CVT® and features an inno-

27

vative suspension layout with performance dampers. The Nissan Sport Sedan Concept was created by Nissan Design America in San Diego, California and developed at the Nissan Global Design Center in Atsugi, Japan.

Grapefruit juice might help in weight loss Washington, Oct 9 (IANS) A research study has found that grapefruit juice not only helps in losing weight but also lowers glucose level. The study conducted on mice found that mice fed a high-fat diet gained 18 percent less weight when they drank clarified, no-pulp grapefruit juice compared with a control group of mice that drank water. "There are many active compounds in grapefruit juice, and we don't always understand how all those compounds work," noted Andreas Stahl, professor of nutritional sciences and toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley in the US. "The grapefruit juice

lowered blood glucose to the same degree as metformin. That means a natural fruit drink lowered glucose levels as effectively as a prescription drug," said Joseph Napoli from the same university. The mice that ate the high-fat diet and drank diluted grapefruit juice not only gained less weight than their control counterparts, they also

had a 13 to 17 percent decrease in blood glucose levels as well as a three-fold decrease in insulin levels. "These results, based on controlled experiments, warrant further study of the potential health-promoting properties of grapefruit juice," concluded Stahl. The study appeared in the journal PLOS ONE.

2014 Mercedes Benz CLA 250: More affordable premium luxury By Autoreviewman The new 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 is the much awaited smaller, more affordable front-drive cousin to the much admired Mercedes CLS sports sedan. It takes some remote styling cues from the CLS With its squat muscular looks, aggressive front fascia and defined

leather steering wheel, collision prevention system, Distronic cruise control which keeps the vehicle at a safe distance from the vehicle in front and also features attention assist to keep you in your lane. Interior wise, the CLA has the prerequisite hallmark Mercedes Benz cabin. High quality premium materials,

engine spooling up with no delay. The engine is delightfully responsive and has lots of pep and performs well in low end to high torque applications. It is a credit to the engine designers just how the power delivery is so smooth, unruffled and with the just the right note of muted aggression. Only under full throttle is when

On highway performance is good with a quiet smooth ride and whisper quiet road and wind noise. Urban and busy city driving show off the CLA’s quick reflexes and demonstrates the good braking with well-modulated stopping. Cruising is effortless on the highways and the CLA’s sport tuned suspension doesn’t sac-

rifice ride quality for feel and control. The firm steering encourages sporty driving, but still handles low speed parking very well. If you have always lusted after the CLS, but deterred by the substantial price tag, the CLA looks very attractive. It had the sporty expensive looks, the three pointed star

on the hood and offer decent performance. It makes excellent sense as a stylish new entry point to the Mercedes Benz brand for a comparative price to non-premium brands. Highly recommended.

detailing it certainly looks expensive and like a typical Mercedes For now, Canadians will gain a 2.0-litre powered directinjected cylinder engine version with an intercooled and turbocharger. This engine will produce 211 horsepower and around 260 lb.-ft of torque. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is the only transmission for now (Although Europeans receive a manual version) and drives the front wheels as standard, whilst allwheel drive is optional. Standard equipment on the 2014 Mercedes CLA will include 17-inch alloy wheels, a 5.8-in information display, 12way power driver’s seat, Artico leather seats, Nappa

excellent switchgears, and superb ergonomics demonstrate attention to detail. All imposing leather trim is available if you desire tempered with more sporty looking touches such as red stitched sport seats and SLS AMG type gauges, slick aluminum trim and aircraft style air-vents. Front headroom is good along with foot and shoulder room, however that arcing swoopy roofline means rear headroom and entry/egress is slightly compromised for taller adults. Trunk space is good at a hefty 470-litres and the rear seat split for extra versatility. On the road, the 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 is impressive with the 2.0 litre

you can hear the four- cylinders origins. The 7-speed dual clutch automatic shifts smoothly with ease and has well timed shift parameters. An optional sport mode operated by a button will change the metrics to allow for faster throttle responses. As stated the turbo starts working with nary a glitch and power is available dreamily all the way through tach range. On the road, the 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA has excellent grip and good cornering ability thanks to the sport suspension. Steering inputs need a just gradual nudges and the CLA displays neutral balanced dynamics. Torque steer is almost absent although under full throttle.
