Airtel, Reliance Communications, Aircel and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, worked to restore networks across the state including Jammu, Kargil, Ladakh and Leh. Home Secretary Anil Goswami, accompanied by a

team of officers, reached Srinagar to coordinate relief and rescue operations, following directions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately depute senior officers from Delhi and other states to coordinate the relief operations with the local administration in Srinagar. Modi, who Wednesday chaired a high-level emergency meeting on relief operations, emphasised immediate attention be given to providing basic necessities like food and water to people severely affected by the calamity. He also stressed the need for a massive effort to ensure basic hygiene and sanitation in the waterlogged areas of Srinagar where over 400,000 people are still estimated to be marooned.

Missing train traced after 17 days in Bihar Patna (IANS): A train which went missing from one railway division in Bihar was finally traced Thursday after 17 long days -- from another division, senior officials said. The Gorakhpur-Muzaffarpur passenger train "went missing" from Hajipur on the night of Aug 25 after the derailment of a goods train led to the diversion of several trains on other routes. As this train began taking a new route, passengers quickly got off -- and the train was reported "missing", Arun Malik, divisional manager in the Samastipur railway division, told IANS. "We finally traced it today at a railway station in another division," he said. Malik said no police case was registered regarding the "missing" train since the railways were themselves looking for it. He added that the driver of the train also made no contact with the concerned division, adding to the mystery.

Suicides in India up 400 percent in 50 years: Study

New Delhi (IANS): The number of suicides in India in a year has risen 400 percent in 50 years and the suicide rate per 100,000 population exceeds 11 percent, a study said Wednesday. "The number of suicides has increased from 33,625 in 1964 to 134,799 in 2013, which is a 400 percent increase in 50 years," Mumbai-based NGO Vaastav Foundation said in a statement. Sep 10 is observed as World Suicide Prevention Day every year to highlight the alarming increase in suicides.

Its paper "Explorative study showing Indian suicide rates reported over 50 years" said the rate of suicide per 100,000 population has increased from 7.1 percent to 11 percent during this period and the highest of 11.4 percent was in 2010. Quoting the National Crime Record Bureau reports, the NGO said suicide in India is treated as a crime rather than as a mental illness, which creates hurdles in getting emergency relief for victims. It said the total number of suicides has decreased overall

from 135,585 in 2011 to 134,799 in 2013 but at the same time, there has been an increase of suicides by males from 87,839 to 90,543 during this period. The total number of women committing suicides was 47,746 in 2011 and 44,256 in 2013 with a significant 9.5 percent decrease in the married women category from 32,582 to 29,491. The gender ratio within the married category points that more than twice the number of married men (64,098 in 2013) committed suicide against

women (29,491 in 2013), the study said. It attributed family problems and illness as the main reasons for committing suicides, with the two accounting for 25 percent and 20 percent of total suicides. "India should have a national strategy for suicide prevention in line with 28 other countries that have successfully implemented it," Vaastav Foundation president Amit Deshpande said. Bangalore-based Child Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting

(CRISP) president Kumar V. Jahgirdar told IANS: "It's a shame that maximum suicides of the world occur in India. It's also more unfortunate that married men are committing suicides due to domestic violence. It's mainly due to gender-biased family laws." He said the government should take immediate steps to prevent suicides by setting up a national commission for men on the lines of the National Commission of Women to look into the problems faced by married men.

Four independents join Congress in Maharashtra

Mumbai (IANS): Ahead of assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Congress Wednesday got a boost when four independent legislators and their supporters joined the party here. The legislators were Vasant Chavan, Shirish Chaudhary, Suresh Jethaliya and Jaykumar Gore. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan welcomed them into the Congress and expressed confidence that the Congress-led alliance would win for a fourth consecutive term. "We witnessed unexpected results in the Lok Sabha election. People have now realised the folly. We hope the Congress-led alliance will get the full support of the people for a fourth time," he said. Chavan admitted that Congress workers in the state were a bit stunned after the Lok Sabha verdict but now there was renewed confidence in the rank and file.

NEW

"In the past five years, we gave a new direction to Maharashtra. Whether it was the policy initiatives of our government or the Congressled government at the centre, our work could be seen," Chavan said. He said the masses would support 'lokshahi' (democracy) and not 'thokshahi' (dictatorship) and that the Congress believed in peace and the well-being of everybody. Assembly elections in Maharashtra are scheduled later this year. State Congress president Manikrao Thakre said that in the past 15 years of Congress-Nationalist Congress Party rule, "the people of the state have seen our work, and we are confident of their support". Thakre said the newcomers would be given ticket to contest the election. He said more political leaders were likely to join the Congress in the coming days.

India's rise as global actor can benefit US: John McCain

Washington (IANS): US Senator John McCain Tuesday said "India's rise as a global actor can benefit the US", and

asked both countries "to trust each other and try to invest and renew their relations". "Ultimately, India and the US should have confidence in one another, and in the promise of their strategic partnership," he said addressing the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington think tank on "Strengthening US-India Relations". The 2008 Republican presidential candidate, who was the first senior political leader to meet Indian Prime Minister

Narendra Modi after his election, said: "This strategic relationship is about our countries placing a long-term bet on each other". "Our strategic relationship (US-India) has unfortunately devolved recently into a transactional one," he said proposing that "our goal should be to produce a road map for concluding an FTA (free trade agreement) and to start negotiating it". Most of all, Indians were concerned by President Barack Obama's plan to withdraw from Afghanistan by 2017, McCain said. Asserting that democratic values

make India a natural partner for the US, he said: "The India-US strategic partnership is critical to encouraging the peaceful rise of China." "Indians are hungry for change, and gave a once-in-a-generation mandate to a leader eager to deliver it," McCain said referring to the historic verdict that swept Modi to power in May. Once shunned by the US for his alleged role or inaction as chief minister during the 2002 Gujarat riots, the US has worked to establish a positive relationship with him ahead of his summit with Obama in Washington Sep 29-30.

Climate change may have caused Kashmir floods: CSE

New Delhi (IANS): The devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir could be a manifestation of extreme weather events induced by climate change, the Centre for Science and Environment said Wednesday. Sunita Narain, director general of CSE, said the calamities in Mumbai (2005), Leh (2010), Uttarakhand (2013) and now Jammu and Kashmir show a similar pattern of extreme rainfall, which can be a result of climate change. She said that as was the case with some of the previous extreme rainfall events, the scale of disaster in Jammu and Kashmir has been exacerbated by unplanned development, especially along the river banks. She said: "In the last 100 years, more than 50 percent of lakes, ponds and wetlands of Srinagar have been encroached upon for constructing buildings and roads. The banks of the Jhelum river have been taken over in

a similar manner, vastly reducing the river's drainage capacity." CSE deputy general director Chandra Bhushan said Jammu and Kashmir is not prepared to handle extreme rainfall events. "Jammu and Kashmir does not have a flood forecasting system. Its disaster management system is also rudimentary," he said. Narain said that according to the latest analysis by the Working Group II of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) assessment report (AR5), floods and

droughts are likely to increase in India. She added: "The IPCC's 2011 special report on managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation presents projections for the period 2071-2100. It points to increasing incidents of more frequent and intense heavy precipitation over most regions." She exhorted the government to come out of its denial mode that climate change is not affecting us. "The government must discard its ostrich-like policy and get out of its denial mode. We will have to see the linkages between climate change and the events such as those unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir. We will have to accept that climate change is going to affect us more and more in the future. We will have to start preparing to adapt to the climate change," she said.

Tourism mart to boost Kerala as a wedding destination Kochi (IANS): The eighth edition of Kerala Tourism's flagship Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) beginning here from Sep 18 is expected to boost the state as a wedding destination, organisers said here Wednesday. KTM 2014 will be held here Sep 18-20 at the Samudrika Convention Centre of the Cochin Port Trust located at the cruise terminal, Willingdon Island, overlooking the backwaters. "Certain to attract attention will be the various wedding themes and also the village life that will be recreated which will give a charming view of the countryside of Kerala. The food court will present Kerala

cuisine at its best. The Mart will boost Kerala as a wedding destination", Abraham George, president of KTM Society, told reporters here. He said 282 international buyers and 938 domestic buyers will be arriving to take part in the KTM. This time all the appointments will be through a new software that the KTM has launched. It will connect the buyers and sellers in fixing appointments with one another. The buyers could view the list of sellers and request for appointments online. Likewise the sellers could also view the buyers and go ahead with appointments.

Britain, Spain, Germany, France and Russia top the list of international buyers. A noteworthy feature of this KTM edition is the participation from relatively new markets like Australia, South Africa, Malaysia and a strong presence from Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Middle East, Eastern Europe and Latin America. The post-mart tours to seven different circuits have been another major highlight of the KTM with most of the tours already booked to capacity where buyers are taken to different destinations for a true feel of Kerala.

in the first quarter of the current fiscal ending June. Speaking at the report launch, Jawaharlal Nehru University professor and economist Jayati Ghosh, however, said expectations may need to be tempered. The UNCTAD report forecasts that growth will go over 5.5 percent in Asian and sub-Saharan countries, but will remain subdued at around 2 percent in North Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. Transition economies' growth is expected to fall further to around one percent, from an already weak performance in 2013, the report said.

International trade has not decelerated because of higher trade barriers or supply-side difficulties, but is the result of weak global demand, it added. As the international community sets about defining a new set of development goals, it is vital that countries have sufficient policy space, the report emphasised. 800 Raleigh Police Department agents complete first ever Sikh Cultural Awareness Training Raleigh, North Carolina: United Sikhs and the Sikh Gurudwara of North Carolina (SGNC) this week announced the completion of the first ever Sikh Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity Training for the Raleigh Police department. The training was conducted in 12 sessions. The aim of these sessions was to explain who Sikhs are, their five articles of faith, and how to uphold Sikh religious sentiments and sensitivities while interacting with the Sikh community. From July 7 to August 19, about 800 Raleigh law enforcement agents, including detectives and uniformed and community police officers, attended the training sessions. The officers were shown the law enforcement training video 'On Common Ground' produced by the United States Department of Justice, which was followed by a questions and answers session. United Sikhs and SGNC members answered a variety of questions including what the colors of a turban mean, the significance of a 'kirpan' (ceremonial knife), status of women, and discussed situations in which police officers would be required to interact with the Sikh community. The officers showed much enthusiasm and curiosity and articles of faith - the 'kanga', the 'kara' and the 'kirpan' were circulated around as exhibits. For the past year and a half, representatives from United Sikhs and SGNC have been working closely with U.S. Attorney Thomas Walker who facilitated discussions with Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown. These training sessions would not have been possible without the support of both Walker and Deck-Brown. The United Sikhs and SGNC were also thankful to training officers Renae

The court heard that Randhir Singh and the victim had met via social media application, Tango, Sep 25, 2013. They swapped sexual messages and agreed to meet at Kippax Fair Shopping Centre the next day. When the victim tried to back out of the meeting after seeing another man with Randhir, Ajitpal Singh threatened her child and said he would show her husband the messages. Randhir then drove the victim to Ajitpal Singh's flat. He forced her [to perform a sex act] and unsuccessfully tried to have sex with her on the way. The woman said she pleaded with Randhir to let her go, but he ignored her and raped her in a bedroom of the 14th floor flat. During the assault, a third man, Jaskaran Sandu, 33, took two pictures of her. Ajitpal Singh then used the pictures to blackmail and rape her, the report said. Crown prosecutor Margaret Jones said the men had hatched a "calculated and devious" plot to force the victim to have sex with them. Defence barristers, however, said the sex had been consensual and their clients denied threatening the victim. The jurors found Randhir Singh not guilty on one count of committing an act of indecency on the victim.

Lockhart and Michael Macario for coordinating ground efforts and managing operational details of the training. These 12 sessions with the local police department served as a fantastic opportunity to showcase principles of Sikhism and help avoid ignorance. The United Sikhs and SGNC said they look forward to continue working with the U.S. attorney's office and Raleigh Police Chief to help facilitate and organize similar training sessions in surrounding cities and counties in North Carolina. Earlier in July, United Sikhs attorneys traveled to Jackson, Mississippi, to train law enforcement and other state personnel on Sikh practices. It was for the first time that a training of this kind was conducted in the State of Mississippi. Training was successfully imparted to a packed room which included the United States Attorney for the Southern District of MS, local FBI supervisory agent and the Deputy Attorney General.

Apple Senior Vice President Eddy Cue described the basics of the payment method, calling it "fast, secure and private". American Express, MasterCard and Visa are on board, he noted. "Today, we are launching the biggest advancement in the history of iPhone," Cook said as executives unveiled the iPhone 6 in two versions. "They are without a doubt the best iPhones we've ever done." The iPhones have curved edges and bigger screens that measure 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, up from just four inches on the iPhone 5S. The smaller one is 6.9 mm thick and the 5.5-inch version is 7.1 mm thick. Senior Vice President Phil Schiller said the battery would be equal to or better than the iPhone 5s. The larger iPhones have what Apple is calling "Retina HD" displays. The iPhone 6 comes with more than 1 million pixels -- a third more pixels than the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 6 Plus has 2 million pixels, double the iPhone 5S' screen. Both iPhones feature an 8 megapixel camera with a new sensor that Apple claims will help the camera focus faster. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature Apple's new A8 processor, which is 25 percent faster than the iPhone 5S. The M8 co-processor will allow fitness apps to tell the difference between walking and biking and even measure your relative elevation. Apple said iOS 8 will be available Sep 17 to customers who have an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C or iPhone 5S. Both iPhones will be available Sep 19 in the US and eight other countries.

the state government would soon provide compassionate jobs to them and instructed heads of

departments to expedite the process in this regard, according to an official press release. Badal issued these instructions while listening to the grievances of people at the weekly Sangat Darshan program held in Chandigarh on Wednesday. He instructed the departments to look into such cases and take immediate action to provide justice to the deserving candidates. On the plea of the Punjab Police Welfare Association, Badal asked his Principal Secretary P. S. Aujla to look into the problems being faced by the dependents of police officers who sacrificed their life during terrorism, in getting pension after the superannuation period. He assured the association that the problem would be fixed soon.

Seeking financial package legitimate right: Sukhbir Badal

Amritsar (IANS): With the central government not showing any inclination to extend financial help to debt-ridden Punjab, state's Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Friday said that it was the legitimate right of Punjab to seek a financial package. "Punjab has sought its legitimate right of financial package from the centre as it fought the nation's war against terrorism," Badal asserted while talking to media here after offering prayers at the Golden Temple. Referring to the central government's reluctance to give a financial package to the state, Badal said Punjab has been demanding its legitimate right as special econom-

ic assistance. "This is a reasonable demand of the state and it should be unconditionally fulfilled. Punjab had suffered a lot during the militancy period and is still suffering the pains of that period. The war against terrorism was a nation's war fought by Punjab for the security and integrity of the country," he said. The Punjab government, led by Sukhbir's father Parkash Singh Badal, had been critical of the earlier United Progressive Alliance central government for not giving a financial package to Punjab and alleged its attitude towards Punjab was "discriminatory". Sukhbir Badal said that he and

the chief minister would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to seek a financial package. He said Punjab was also lagging behind on economic front due to massive tax concessions provided to hill states, and demanded Punjab should also be included in that category. "Punjab has made the nation selfreliant on food security front though it has suffered a lot due to terrorism and other severe crises. The state's economy has also face hit due to tax concessions to neighbouring states. Punjab played a significant role in freedom battle of country by making highest sacrifices," Badal said.

improve the viability of farming. Dwelling on the formula to be evolved for fixing the MSP, Badal said it should be fixed on the basis of not only paid-out costs and input costs but also the value for managerial input of the farmer. He pointed out that farmers and their families worked round-the-clock on the farm as labour as well as a skilled force by managing farm machinery. In a statement here, he said that Punjab farmers, who were the biggest contributors of food grain to the national kitty, should be duly compensated for aptly managing their farms. Batting for the implementation of renowned agro-scientist Dr M.S. Swaminathan's formula for fixing the MSP, Badal said this should include the cost of cultivation plus a margin

of 50 percent, as suggested by the chairman of the National Farmers Commission. The chief minister contended that this was essential not only to provide for viability of farming but also for development of new infrastructure required for adoption of improved technologies. He urged the central government to ensure that farmers must continue to get the prevailing market prices for their produce when any change was made in the import or export regulations and tariffs to safeguard the interest of consumers. Badal said he has deputed Financial C o m m i s s i o n e r Development (FCD) Suresh Kumar to take up the entire matter for the fixation of MSP according to Punjab's recommenda-

tions with the director of National Centre for Agriculture Economics and Policy Research (NCAP). Punjab, with only 1.54 percent of India's geographical area, produces around 20 percent of wheat, 10 percent of rice and 10 percent of cotton of the country. The state alone contributes over 50 percent food grain to the national kitty. "The state has contributed significantly to the national pool of food grain, making the country selfsufficient in food grain and food security. The assured procurement of food grain at MSP has played a key role in this development. The farmers of Punjab have been demanding a review of the procedure to fix the MSP to make it remunerative and thereby improve the viability of farming," Badal said.

Over 10.56 lakh households covered under PMJDY in Punjab Chandigarh (IANS): Over 10.56 lakh households have been covered under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in Punjab till date from the launch of the scheme on Aug 28, senior officials said here Monday.

Reviewing the progress of the scheme here, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal told officers to ensure that every household in the state was covered under the scheme by December 15. "Bankers should com-

plete the task of opening accounts under this financial inclusion scheme positively by December 15. Punjab would be No.1 state in the country to meet the deadline," Badal said.

Hope Indians support 'Creature 3D' for indigenous technology: Bipasha

DESCRIBING as a "very tough experience" the shooting of her forthcoming film "Creature 3D" which brings to Indian audiences a fresh genre of cinema, Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu Tuesday hoped Indian viewers will appreciate the work of indigenous technicians. The movie, slated to release Sep 12, is a creature-based thriller directed by Vikram Bhatt. In the film, Bipasha's character Ahaana battles a creature, based on Indian mythology, as she transforms from a "vulnerable and lonely" girl to a powerful woman. "It is India's first creature-feature. For an actor is all about reacting to a situation and who is in front of you. But for the first time there was no one in front of us so we had to imagine everything.

"Shooting part was extremely difficult for the actors and the technicians. I hope we being Indians support the film because of the efforts put in by Indian

technicians. The creativity is indigenous and the team is Indian, no foreigners," Bipasha told reporters here. "They were shooting with 3 D cameras

which was completely different from the normal process and post that there was 11 months of post-production where the creature was actually made. "Every scale, every speck of saliva of the creature was imagined and created by Indian technicians... no foreigners," Bipasha explained. The storyline, she said B, is India-centric and based on the concept of Brahma-Rakshas or demon spirits of Hindu mythology but if one were to consider the creature-generated from special effects-in isolation, the beast is much like those in the West[ern films]. "I will not compare the film as a whole, with the West, because the sensibilities are very different. The story line is India-centric but just the creature is very much like the West," she said. Arjun Rampal wants Arun Gawli's I find it disrespectful when people inputs for 'Daddy' call me bubbly: Parineeti

ACTOR Arjun Rampal, who will be seen as gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli in the upcoming political drama "Daddy", would like to meet the latter to understand the nuances of his character. Gaurav Bavdankar will direct "Daddy", while Mandar Dalvi will produce it. "To portray Arun Gawli in the film, I will have to lose weight. I will definitely have to get that physicality," the 41-yearold told reporters here at the poster launch of "Daddy". "I would like to meet him soon and would like to take his advice on what he thinks as that will help me in working hard for the film," he added. "Daddy" will tentatively go on the floors October end as Arjun is currently shooting for "Roy". Elaborating on the preparations for the role in "Daddy", Arjun said: "When you are bestowed with such a responsi-

bility to portray such a role, you have to delve deeply into it. You have to understand that person, his personality and everything so that you are able to do justification to the character on the screen." "So, I will have to do a lot of homework for my character. I do have some information with me and I do read it," he added. (IANS)

ACTRESS Parineeti Chopra, who is often known as one of the most bubbly actresses in Bollywood, says she finds the title 'Bubbly' very disrespectful. "When people call me bubbly, I find it very disrespectful. I have done four films and there was nothing similar between 'Hasee Toh Phasee', 'Ishaqzaade', 'Shuddh Desi Romance' and 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl'," Parineeti told IANS. "There was nothing similar about them and there was nothing bubbly about them at all. I find it ridiculous and I would like them (people) to see my films again so that they can change their opinion," she added. Parineeti is currently busy promoting her forthcoming film "Daawat-e-Ishq". Directed by Habib Faisal, the film features Aditya Roy Kapur as the male lead. The actress is focussed at making herself better with every project, and not concerned about what her competitors are doing.

"I genuinely don't care about what anybody else is doing I only want to be better than my last outing. Every actress is different and we all get different kind of work and so there is no reason to compete. I can't think of them like that at all," she said. (IANS)

ChaiTime 7 Secrets of Low-Stress Families

Continued From Last Week

4. Low-stress moms make dinner from scratch. Believe it or not, using processed convenience foods for dinner doesn't actually save you cooking time. That's what really surprised 39-year-old mom and researcher Margaret Beck, whose focus for the study was food preparation. "All the families spent roughly one hour preparing dinner, whether they used processed foods or fresh ingredients," she says. The moms who prepared more convenience foods tended to overcompensate by having more courses — either side dishes or separate meals for the kids — which wasted time. And if you want your children to eat what's on the table: "The kids who assisted in the food preparation always ate what was served," Beck says. "And the mood in the house was lighter and happier when the kids spend cooking time in the kitchen." Talk about a win-win!

5. Low-stress moms take five minutes of me time. There's a secret to being fully present and enjoying family life after a demanding day at work: "The findings suggested that when women unwound alone for 5 or 10 minutes, it set a positive tone for

the rest of the night," says researcher Shu-wen Wang, a 28year-old mom from Los Angeles who helped review more than 1,540 hours of footage. "Moms reported unwinding by exercising, gardening, or having a candy bar — not that I recommend that last approac h ! I always f e l t selfish taking time for m e , especiall y after working a l l d a y, but this s t u d y proved to me how healthy it is for moms and their families."

6. Low-stress families watch TV together. If you feel guilty every time your family plops in front a television after a long day rather than doing something more interactive, don't sweat it. "Families who watched TV together showed many bonding behaviors," Campos says. "Bonding can be sharing snacks,

high-fiving each other if the Lakers score a basket, or guessing trivia questions together during Jeopardy!" Even sitcoms can bring you closer. "When families laugh together during a TV show, that's a shared moment they have in common, and it creates a memor y," she says. So on days where you just can't muster the energy to recruit the kids for crazy 8's or kickball in the yard, know that a little TV time can be good for your family too.

Sometimes, the mad-dash moments seem to define our days, but "it's only when we find moments to slow down that we can fully appreciate those everyday moments that make a family," Saxbe says. "I remember watching a mom kissing her son and tucking him into bed. The son responded, 'I want another kiss, Mommy!' So the mom kissed him again. They repeated this five or six times — it was so sweet! Watching this made me appreciate how lucky I am to have a family I care about and how I how important it is to cherish these little moments of love when they come along."

7. Low-stress families embrace daily rituals. Sonam Kapoor vs Deepika Padukone - who'll win the box office game?

IN the mega clash of "Om Shanti Om" and "Saawariya" in 2007, debutante Deepika Padukone had emerged a clear box office-winner against first-timer Sonam Kapoor. Seven years later, the question is - will Deepika continue to remain a step ahead on the success ladder with "Finding Fanny" or will Sonam take a lead this time with "Khoobsurat"? Both the films are releasing within a week's time this month. Deepika's film is releasing Sep 12, while Sonam's new offering hits the screens Sep 19 - and both actresses are going out of their way to ensure their movies are promoted in the best possible manner. "Finding Fanny", an English language entertainer by Indian

filmmaker Homi Adajania, is definitely not a film that every actress will risk -- especially after delivering four back-toback Bollywood hits "Race 2", "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", "Chennai Express" and "Goliyon Ki Raasleela RamLeela". But Deepika took it. Nevertheless, one should give it to Sonam for choosing to step into the shoes of the enigmatic Rekha for "Khoobsurat", the new age twist on the 1980 film "Khubsoorat" -- one of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's evergreen films and which continues to have a dedicated fan following even after more than three decades. Both the actresses come from different backgrounds. Sonam comes from a family of actors and filmmakers -- her father Anil Kapoor is a veteran

actor, uncle Boney is a film producer and her youngest uncle Sanjay is an actor too. Deepika's father, Prakash Padukone, is the country's badminton icon. Yet, it is Deepika who has managed to cement her space in Bollywood as a performer, better than Sonam, who has been more in news for her fashion sensibilities despite having the talent to carry out roles as different as in "Aisha" and "Delhi-6". After getting a perfect launchpad with "Om Shanti Om" -- a Shah Rukh Khan-starrer which turned out to be a huge hit, Deepika went on to prove her mettle with a mix of films like "Bachna Ae Haseeno", "Love Aaj Kal", "Housefull", "Aarakshan" and "Cocktail". The Bangalore girl had her share of flops too in the form of "Chandni Chowk to China", "Karthik Calling Karthik", "Lafangey Parindey", "Break Ke Baad" and "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey" -- but her four recent back-to-back gems catapulted her into a league of her own. Sonam, who made her debut with Kapoor scion Ranbir in "Saawariya", on the other hand, has few hits to boast of in her filmography. She bagged roles in biggies

like "Thank You", "Mausam" and "Players", but all bit the dust at the ticket windows. Her work in "Raanjhanaa" was appreciated, but in "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", her appearance was as good as a cameo. Interestingly, her presence in tinsel town is strengthened more due to her fashionista image and her designer wardrobe.

Meanwhile, Deepika is also hoping to strike gold yet again with the offbeat "Finding Fanny". But there's no mean competition here - or so it seemed from photographs from a "Finding Fanny" screening, where Deepika gave Sonam a warm welcome in Mumbai. (IANS)

Earlier this year, Sonam was seen in "Bewakoofiyaan", which didn't elicit the response she would've expected. Her hopes are high from "Khoobsurat", which promises to show her in an exuberant and lively avatar. Another highlight of the film is that she is paired with Pakistani sensation Fawad Khan.

price. Inside, the Sonic is modern and sporty with unique instrument panel and center console design available in titanium finish. The audio controls are mounted on top and large round climate controls below in the fascia. Front bucket seats are standard and optionally heated, while the rear seats fold flat. Cargo area in the hatchback is 869 litres (30.7 cu. ft) with the rear seats folded. The cargo area in the five-door also has a removable false floor that creates a level surface when the seats are folded. Electronic power steering is standard, and Engineers working with the Corvette apparently helped tune the suspension and handling! On the road, the RS feels fast with the no severe turbo lag. The slick six speed manual shifter has a light action and is fast enough for spirited acceleration with a 0-100 km/h dash of around 10.0 seconds. Combine the tactile steering, slightly lower profile, firmer suspension, and the Sonic's compact dimensions and you get a fun car to drive. Fast bends, long curves and the cut and thrust of traffic show off the Sonics eager to please chassis dynamics and tossability. Even the larger 17 inch wheels and rubber do not upset the well-engineered chassis, delivering a firm, yet comfortable ride on all surfaces.During testing our fivedoor Sonic proved to be a fun to drive, zippy car. There is a price to pay however, the small 1.4 liter engines has to work hard to keep rev ups, and with revised shorter transmission gearing –highway fuel consumption is up a tad at (city/hwy): 8.2/5.9 L/100 km. To sum up, no vices really to report. Compared to the old Chevrolet Aveo model the Sonic replaces - quality, materials, fit, and finish are all vastly improved. The Sonic RS feels faster, looks more youthful, and proves to be a very entertaining to drive subcompact car with plenty of room, features, practicality, and comfort. It is serious competition to the current crop of smaller hatchbacks, with its performance, and horsepower/ torque numbers. The LTZ offers a lot at a more modest price and the same engine and power specs, but the RS is tempting for its sporty clothing and higher excitement factor for sure. By Autoreviewman 2014 Chevrolet Sonic Fivedoor hatchback priced from $23,995

Price as tested with option, taxes and destination - $26,940.

2014 Jeep Compass Limited 4x4- The legend continues By Autoreviewman The 2014 Jeep Compass is no-nonsense value for money CUV that makes a lot of sense when you look at what it offers. With its trademark seven slat grille and mini Jeep Grand Cherokee looks, it has a distinct visual identity although softer with a few more curves to it than the older models. It looks, sleeker. Smoother and more refined both front and rear. For 2014 thereis some improvement off a 2013 revamp. Technically, there is a new six-speed automatic gearbox as standard on the mid-level Compass and Limited trims. The new six-speed also features as standard, a manual shifting mode, and a shorter final-drive ratio to promote quicker acceleration performance. Exterior upgrades include: new acoustic-laminated windshield, 18-inch aluminum wheels, new detailing around the fog lamps, halogen headlamps on Limited models and body-color side mirrors. The cabin also gains an optional backup camera and perforated leather seats and satinchrome accents on the doors, dash bin, center stack, and shifter. Best of all is the fact, the Compass outperforms most of it car-based rivals by virtue of its four wheel drive systems that signifies the Jeep brands strongest asset. There are two different four-wheel drive options; the Freedom Drive I system for mud, snow and light gravel and the Freedom Drive II with a continuously-variable type transaxle for the tough stuff. Engine option come in the form of either a 2.4 liter four cylinder unit or 2.0 liter four cylinder engine. I recommend getting the 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine over the 158-hp, 2.0-liter four, with its 24 pound-feet more torque advantage.Transmission options include a fivespeed manual or the six speed automatic transmissions teamed with either the Freedom Drive I, or Freedom Drive II All-wheel drive systems. The Jeep Compass arrives in a number of model ranging from the base models to luxury clad north and Limited models- ranging in price from price from $17,745 - $27,795. Even base models come well-equipped, full power accessories, fog lamps, and alloy wheels are included in all models. The base Compass Sport 4x2 arrives with extras like cruise control, antilock brakes and side roof rails. Our top line 2014 Jeep Compass Limited 4x4 tester was base priced at $27,795, and came goodies such as a 6-way power driver’s seat with lumbar control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and a very nice slate gray/Saddle Tan leather-faced interior that look and felt very luxurious. Automatic climate control and 18-inch alloys arrive with the top Limited models. Options on our Limited (base price $27,795) tester included the Sun and Sound group with express power window close, 9 speaker Boston Acoustic Speaker with subwoofer($1,050) , 2 articulating liftgate speakers ($225), trailer prep group, Security and cargo convenience group, six- speed auto transmission with Autostick, Uconnect 40gb Hard drive. All options AC tax and destination charge meant a final tally of $34,425 for the vehicle. The Compass interior is well laid-out and comes with a number of innovative features, like a rechargeable flashlight and outward-facing tailgate speakers. Interior room is very good up front and adequate in the back cabin with a somewhat hard rear bench seat. Safety wise the Compass has: side curtain airbags, Brake Traction Control, Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation, front-seat side airbags, active head restraints, and a driver-controlled three-mode Electronic Stability Program (ESP) are all included as standard features, and an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with roughroad detection are all included. On the road, the Compass has a car like ride and with some underpinnings from the last Dodge Caliber, handles fine with good reflexes on the highway and in the city. Power for our test Compasswas via a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine producing 172 horsepower

rough country roads and a combination of urban and highway. The ride is comfortable on asphalt erring on soft with some body roll on corners due to the high center of gravity. On the light trails we took, the Compassperformed well with sufficient ground clearance, its wide track and compact wheelbase ensured safe low-level boonie bashing. With its Jeep heritage, very good off-road performance, generous equipment spec and decent pricing the Jeep Compass has a lot going for it. Pay a little more and the Limited model is the Compass to get providing more every day luxury touches and features in my opinion.

Will think about future once I return to India: Shastri

New Delhi (IANS): Former cricket captain and now team director Ravi Shastri said he had plenty of oneon-one chats to lift the Indian cricketers bounce back in style and win the ODI series after suffering a humiliating 1-3 loss in the Tests in England. "I had a plenty of one-onone chats. Not sessions. I was not afraid to speak to a guy individually. Ground, bus, bar, dressing room, while eating - we were talking cricket," Shastri was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.com Tuesday. "Communication is important. The advantage I had was I had watched these boys a lot. I told them I have watched more cricket than I have played. I have learned more about cricket after I stopped playing." Shastri doesn't want to think too much about his future with the Indian team. "One step at a time. I was doing commentary during the Oval Test. This is my first, proper off-day. I got a call immediately after the Oval Test asking me take over. Then your whole mind goes into a tailspin because you are supposed to suddenly do something different and massive," he said. "My job was to be with the team for the ODI series. They have won it. I want to let that sink. I will return to India and then think about the future," he added. Shastri was appointed the team director after the Indian team's humiliating 13 loss in the Test series in

England, triggering rumours that coach Duncan Fletcher could be on his way out. Shastri's presence did a world of good as the team bounced back in style to beat England by a similar margin in the ODIs. Asked if he achieved his target, Shastri said: "Absolutely. I got more than I would have expected. I say that only because of England's record at home, not many sides have thrashed them 3-0 in a fourODI series. It is a big achievement: From what they were mentally after the Test series defeat, and then to respond in that fashion made me feel proud." Shastri said one of his primary tasks was to liven up the dressing room. "I had to make it (dressing room) a place where the boys wanted to enjoy themselves. I was very clear when I said I am doing this job because I believe in them. And that was enough. As I got talking to them one on one, things started falling in place," he said. Shastri also focused on the out-of-form Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan. "About Virat, you knew it was due (the half-century in the Edgbaston Twenty20). The reason he did not perform earlier was a combination of mental and technical issues. You cannot get out to the same bowler in the same fashion five to six times. So, there is an issue."

"He has to accept there is something wrong, otherwise you cannot get out. And that had to be addressed, which we did. There are certain issues Virat understands he needs to work on, which he has been doing. Similar case with Shikhar [Dhawan]." "Shikhar batted magnificently - you would have seen the difference in him in the last three matches. He was technically and overall more fluent and confident. Mentally, they were down after the Test series, but my job was to make them free. The good thing about this entire team was the willingness to listen and learn. No one works harder than these boys they push themselves to the limit," he said. Shastri said his stint with the team during the 2007 Bangladesh tour, in the aftermath of the first round exit from the World Cup, stood him in good stead in England. "When I first worked as a consultant with the Indian team during the 2007 Bangladesh tour, (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni was a key player already. Hence both of us know each other well. Our job was to make his life easier after the Test series. Our job was to take the pressure off him. Our job was to communicate more with the players, make them at ease, and give them the confidence," he said. Asked if he agrees with Dhoni calling the England series a "good" tour overall,

Shastri said: "He is not far from the truth. One of the things I had told the boys was, the reason I am here is you have shown me two things on this tour: First was India's greatest ever Test win, at Lord's during the second Test. I mean it. It was phenomenal."

Shastri also said that he had blasted the team, saying they have played "spineless cricket" in the last three Tests. "I also told them in the final three Tests you played spineless cricket. So, for me a good team cannot be a bad team in two weeks. It

cannot. It is a learning curve. Then to beat England in the ODI series the way India did was very good. And don't forget, this is only the second time India have won a bilateral ODI series in England," he said.

PUNJAB

Punjab accuses Chandigarh of polluting Ghaggar river

Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab government Monday accused the union territory of Chandigarh of polluting Ghaggar river in the state by discharging untreated municipal waste and industrial effluents into seasonal rivulets and drains, which ultimately merge into the river. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would take up the matter of heavy discharge of industrial effluents and domestic waste into the drains with Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil, who is also the administrator of the union territory, to seek his intervention for taking effective

steps to prevent the reckless discharge of effluents and waste, a state government spokesman said here. Punjab has pointed out that the discharge was aggravating pollution in the river and was posing a major health hazard. The decision to take up the matter with the UT Administrator was taken at a high-level meeting to review the progress of Ghaggar river cleaning project. "According to the mapping undertaken by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), various industrial and domestic sewer outlets within the jurisdiction of Chandigarh

were resulting in heavy pollution of river Ghaggar with about 2MLD discharge of untreated waste water. "These sewer outlets included IT Park, K i s h a n g a r h , Bhagwanpura, Shastri Nagar, Bapu Dham Colony, Madrasi Colony and Hallomajra," the spokesman said here. Ministry prunes Asian Games contingent to 679, football teams cleared New Delhi (IANS): The All India Football Federation (AIFF) heaved a sigh of relief as Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, in consultation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tuesday cleared the football teams but the Indian contingent for the Incheon Asian Games, slated for Sep 19-Oct

4, was pruned to 679 from 942 that was proposed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The football teams, which are currently in Shanghai, have been cleared at all-costto-the-government basis. The men's squad will comprise 20 members and women's 18.

The men's team have won the gold medal twice in 1951 and 1962. A top official in the AIFF told IANS that the government had cleared football and four other disciplines as a 'special case' for the Games. The government was unhappy with the men's football team's perform-

ance and was not in favour of sending it to the Asian Games. The total number of participants shall be 679, including 516 athletes and 163 coaches and support staff. The IOA had sent a list of 942 participants, including 662 athletes and 280 officials. India will be participating in a total of 28 disciplines as against 35 last time. "In Asiad 2010 in Guangzhou, China, we had sent a contingent of 609 athletes plus 324 officials (933). It has also been decided that 'No Cost to Government' shall not be a consideration for finalising the national contingent," the ministry said in a statement. "The list was sent by the IOA to the ministry on 21st August, 2014. As per the Ministry's guidelines, the list was required to be submitted at least 90 days in advance. The exercise was undertaken to ensure that the deserving

Athletes, Coaches and Supporting Personnel are participating in the Games. The minister wishes the Indian contingent all the very best," the statement added. Besides football, the disciplines cleared for the Asian Games are aquatics (swimming), archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, kabaddi, rowing, sepak takraw, shooting, squash, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, wushu, weightlifting, and yachting. Meanwhile, the final lists of footballers who would be boarding the flight to Incheon have also been named by the men's and women's coaches Wim Koevermans and Tarun Roy, respectively. Dempo's Alwyn George, Pune FC duo Salam Ranjan

Singh and Dhanpal Ganesh and Sporting Clube De Goa's Rowlin Borges failed to make the cut for the Asian Games for the U-23 India Men's side. On the other hand, Supriya Routray, Indumathi, Jyoti Ann Burrett and Rinaroy Devi won't be travelling to Incheon along with the Indian Women's squad. Clubbed in Group A alongside hosts South Korea, the Maldives and Thailand, the Indian women play their first group league match against Maldives Sep 14. The other matches are against South Korea (Sep 17) and Thailand (Sep 19). The U-23 men, on the other hand, have to take on the might of last Games' silver medallists United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their first group league match slated for Sep 15 while their last match in the Group is against Jordan, Sep 22.

New Delhi (IANS): Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) corruption case, Tuesday said that Indian cricket board secretary Sanjay Patel was creating confusion by claiming that there was nothing against ousted president N. Srinivasan in the report being prepared by the Supreme Court-appointed Mukul Mudgal Committee. "Mr. Sanjay Patel, secretary, BCCI (suspended by his own state association of Baroda) is creating confusion with wrong statements. He has

been quoted in the media saying the commission has given clean cheat to Srinivasan in its interim report," Verma in a statement Tuesday. He said: "One reputed English television channel also ran similar wrong news. It claimed that it was in possession of the interim report of Mudgal Commission and there were no any serious allegations against officials, cricketers and Srinivasan." This, Verma said, "is a very serious matter since the Hon'ble Supreme Court is monitoring the investigating

team. Such wrong news would raise questions about the integrity and credibility of the commission." Last week, the Mukul Mudgal Committee was given two more months by the Supreme Court to submit its report about 13 individuals, including some prominent cricketers. Verma also claimed that former board president Sharad Pawar has assured that he would try his best to stop Srinivasan from contesting for a third term in office.

Dr. Cabbie is a heartwarming comedy

AN unemployed doctor turned cab driver becomes a local hero when he converts his taxi into a mobile clinic. Dr. Cabbie is the heartwarming journey of a young Indian doctor who immigrates to Canada with the selfless ambition of

healing others while beginning a new life in the land of opportunity. Dr. Cabbie discovers his true purpose and true love when he embarks upon this journey of a doctor turned cabbie. The movie was directed by Montreal's acclaimed

Jean-Francois Pouliot (La Grande Seduction) and stars Toronto's Vinay Virmani (Breakaway), Kunal Nayyar (Big Bang Theory), Adrianne Palicki (GI JOE, NBC's Friday Night Lights), Lillete Dubey (Monsoon Wedding),

Mircea Monroe (Change Up), Rizwan Manji (Outsourced), Chris Diamantopoulos (The Three Stooges) and newcomer Isabelle. In Brampton, Ontario, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan hopped on to the stage at SilverCity Brampton for the music launch of Dr. Cabbie. Khan was undoubtedly the star attraction at the music launch, but the crowd was equally enthusiastic towards Lily Singh (who sometimes goes by the name "Superwoman"). Singh, a YouTube sensation plays a small role in Dr. Cabbie. Brampton’s Manj Musik and Raghav, a well-known artist from U.K. kept the crowd on its feet. Manj and his wife Nindy Kaur performed half-a-dozen songs that combined the sensibilities of bhangra with hiphop and reggae. “I watched the film (Dr. Cabbie) last night and it’s an out-and out comedy,”

said superstar Salman Khan. “Vinay Virmani (the lead actor) is great actor.

He should come to Mumbai. I urge you all to watch the movie.”

With its new 2.7-litre EcoBoost® with standard Auto Start-Stop and new 3.5-litre V6 with twin independent variable camshaft timing, the 2015 Ford F-150 resets the bar in light-duty pickup 2.7-litre EcoBoost power The high-output, twin-turbo 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 features an entirely new design that delivers power and performance in a strong, smart package. The engine produces 325 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque – improving the power-to-weight ratio of the 2015 truck by 15 per cent over the 2014 5.0-litre V8-equipped F-150 with similar torque output, thanks to vehicle lightweighting. The 2.7-litre EcoBoost 4x2 has a maximum payload rating of 2,250 pounds (1021 kg) and maximum tow rating of 8,500 pounds (3856 kg), ideal for meeting midrange capability needs. Boosting 2.7-litre

EcoBoost fuel efficiency is the debut of standard Auto Start-Stop technology for F-150. This technology, specially tuned for truck customers, shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at a stop. When the brake is released, the engine restarts quickly. Auto Start-Stop helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions when the truck is stopped and the engine is off. The technology is off when towing or in four-wheel-drive mode. The 2.7-litre EcoBoost engine also features Ford’s first use of a compacted graphite iron cylinder block in a gasoline engine, the same material used in Ford’s 6.7-litre Power Stroke® turbo diesel V8 in Super Duty trucks. The composite CGI/aluminum cylinder block saves weight while providing strength where it’s needed most for durability. Advanced technology, power and efficiency combine to create an

engine for F-150 that boasts more than twice the horsepower, torque and towing capability of the Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup truck with identical displacement 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine. Ford testing shows the 2.7-litre EcoBoost also outperforming Ram 1500 3.0-litre V6 EcoDiesel and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-litre V8 while towing a 7,000-pound (3175 kg) enclosed trailer up Davis Dam in Arizona. This is the same grade the Society of Automotive Engineers uses for its J2807 towing testing standards, which the 2015 Ford F-150 will follow. Thanks to vehicle weight savings, the standard 3.5-litre V6 with TiVCT offers a 5 per cent improvement in powerto-weight ratio over the larger 3.7-litre V6 in the 2014 F-150, with better fuel efficiency and performance.
