New Delhi/London (IANS): Al Qaeda leader Ayman alZawahiri has announced the creation of a South Asian branch of his outfit to "raise the flag of jihad" in the Indian subcontinent, causing concerns. In a 55-minute video posted online, Zawahiri - who succeeded Osama bin Laden after he was killed in Pakistan also pledged renewed loyalty to Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar, BBC reported. Announcing the formation of "Al Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent", Zawahiri speaking in both Arabic and Urdu - said this "would be good news for Muslims in Burma, Bangladesh and in the Indian states of Assam, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir where they would be rescued from injustice and oppression". Official sources said in New Delhi that the Intelligence Bureau has been asked to authenticate the video. Home Minister Rajnath Singh met the heads of the Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) Thursday, the sources told IANS. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also

attended the meeting. Congress leader and former union minister Manish Tewari described the development as "extremely worrying" and said the government must take cognizance of it. Leading strategic expert Commodore C. Uday Bhaskar told IANS: "What the video is saying is not very new. The Al Qaeda propaganda from 2001 onwards was making the same exhortation to encourage the more empathetic constituency to support Al Qaeda. Osama bin Laden had also made a reference to Al Hind." What is relevant in the new Al Qaeda video is its timing, says Bhaskar, who is the director of Society for Policy Studies think tank. He said the video has come when Sunni jihadist group Islamic State is making news and gathering followers with its brutal activities in Syria and

Iraq. "The Al Qaeda and Zawahiri are tr ying to position themselves as credible alternatives to the Islamic State," the expert said. The video also comes days ahead of the anniversary of the 9/11 carnage. "Both groups are trying to claim a certain profile to attract disenchanted youth to follow their ideology," Bhaskar said. The Al Qaeda announcement comes at a time when the group faces challenges from the increasingly aggressive Islamic State that has taken control of a large swathe of territory in Iraq and in Syria too. BBC quoted counterterrorism experts as saying that Al Qaeda was vying with Islamic State to recruit followers worldwide. Islamic State leader Abu Bakr alBaghdadi describes himself as a "caliph" - or head of state and has called for support of Muslims from around the world. BBC also said Pakistani militants linked to Islamic State have distributed pamphlets in Peshawar asking people to support their idea of creating an Islamic caliphate.

National Award Winning Actress took to prostitution after running out of money Hyderabad (IANS): National award winning actress Shweta Basu, who was arrested for prostitution here, has revealed that she took to the sex trade as she was running out of money. The 23-year-old actress, who was arrested Sunday, is currently lodged in a state-run rescue home. She admitted she made wrong choices in her career. "I was out of money. I had to support my family and some other good causes. All the doors were closed, and some people encouraged me to get into prostitution to earn money. I was helpless, and with no option left to choose, I got involved in this act," police sources quoted her as saying. The actress, seen in films like "Makdee" and "Iqbal" also revealed that there were other actresses like her who went through this. Shweta, who shot to fame as a child artiste in Ekta Kapoor's television serial "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki", bagged the national award for best child artist for "Makdee" in 2002. The actress, who also did a few films in Bengali, Tamil and Telugu, was arrested from a hotel Sunday night along with the sex racket's organiser Anjaneyulu alias Balu. Balu, who was reportedly collecting Rs.1 lakh each from high flying customers, has been sent to jail.

'Modi visit, Tokyo Declaration give new dynamism to India-Japan ties' New Delhi (IANS): The Tokyo Declaration taking India-Japan relations to the next level - a Special Strategic Global Partnership - has lent "new dynamism" to the close ties between the two nations, especially with its emphasis on increased economic and defence cooperation, even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe failed to tie up the civil nuclear deal during this visit, say experts. Former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal termed the visit "largely successful" with important decisions taken in the economic side, especially Japan's promise of $33.58 billion over the next five years under the India-Japan Investment Promotion Partnership, that would include development of economic corridors, infrastruc-

ture, transport system and smart cities. Japan has also offered financial, technical and operational support to India for the Shinkansen system or the bullet trains. Sibal termed the agreements in the defence sector as significant, especially Japan's decision to remove six Indian entities from the 'foreign end users list' and the progress in talks for purchase by India of the US-2 amphibian aircraft from Japan as well as the decision to regularize the India-US-Japan Malabar maritime exercise. However, he said it was disappointing that the civil nuclear deal could not be signed. Former ambassador G. Parthasarathy said Modi's Japan visit has "certainly given new dynamism to bilateral relations, which were good in any case", in the wake of substantive

involvement of Japan in India's economic development and the enhanced military-to-military relations. Japan's participation in the trilateral Malabar exercises with the US and India were important and would help work towards creating "stable, balanced power in Asia", he said. Former Indian envoy Sheel Kant Sharma said Modi's visit has "highly successful outcomes and Japan's response to Modi's overtures were overwhelmingly positive, though in certain areas work needs to be done". Referring to Modi's swipe at China where he deplored the "expansionist" tendencies of some countries which "encroach" on the seas of others, the former envoy said Modi had made "very delicate reference to problems in Asia".

President releases stamps on Indian musicians

New Delhi (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday released a set of commemorative postage stamps on eight Indian musicians, describing them among "the greatest music maestros of contemporary India". The stamps feature luminaries in classical Indian music: Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, D.K. Pattammal, Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Ali

NEW

Akbar Khan. "As we pay tribute to eight of the greatest music maestros of contemporary India, we celebrate their life and work and their matchless legacy," the president said at an event at Rashtrapati Bhavan. "These eight maestros are, without a doubt, among the tallest luminaries in the history of world music. "They have not only achieved personal perfection but have made extraordinary contributions, in

their respective fields, to the development and evolution of the schools of music in which their talents were nurtured and honed. "Their contribution and its enrichment of our cultural heritage cannot be quantified or estimated. It is infinite in its resonance and their names will be mentioned with great reverence. "Their music will be cherished by the young and old, for many decades to come," the president added.

He termed the reference to the trilateral Malabar naval exercises as a "very positive arrangement" but added that both sides need to "come out with clear interests". Sharma termed as "dynamic and very positive" Japan's support for India to become a full member in the four international export control regimes: Nuclear Suppliers Group, Missile Technology Control Regime, Wassenaar Arrangement and Australia Group. China expert Srikanth Kondapalli said the Tokyo Declaration was "explicit" on the political, economic and defence fields and both sides have exhibited substantial cooperation in the defence

fields. Referring to the clause where both countries agree to work towards closer and stronger strategic partnership "for a prosperous future for their two countries and for advancing peace, stability and prosperity in the world, in particular, in the inter-connected Asia, Pacific and Indian Ocean Regions", he said this was aimed at the direction of countering China. Another major point in the declaration is the reference to unhindered maritime and air flight access. Both sides "affirmed their shared commitment to maritime security, freedom of navigation and overflight, civil aviation safety, unimpeded lawful

commerce, and peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law", the statement says. This clause, Kondapalli said, was significant in view of the recent quarrel between China and the US following a narrowly-avoided midair incident between a US spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet near Hainan island. China has set up Air Defence Identification Zones over the South and East China Seas, intercepting overflights. The clause in the IndiaJapan statement was meant to emphasize that India concurs with Japan on unhindered maritime freedom and freedom of overflights, which are of "dissonance" with China's viewpoint, he noted.

Supreme Court framing guidelines on police briefing to media New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court Wednesday embarked on the task of framing guidelines to regulate the nature and extent of information police will disclose to the media on criminal cases. The bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman asked counsel Gopal Shankarnarayanan to frame a question that would be sent to

the central and state governments, including the union territories, to elicit their response on the issue. The court gave Shankarnarayanan two weeks' time to frame the question. The respondents then need to reply in six weeks. Sankaranarayanan was appointed amicus curiae in the last hearing Aug 28. Broadly, the issues on which

response of the central and state governments would be sought would involve how much information police should give to the media and at what stage of investigation and at what level of police hierarchy. The issue would also include what information would be withheld from the media. The apex court passed the order on the guidelines as it

reserved the order on the proposed guidelines by it with reference to investigation of police gun battles, follow-up action and disciplinary action against police officials, if necessary. The case is related to the guidelines prepared by the Bombay High Court in gun battle cases that were challenged by NGO People's Union for Civil Liberties.

First 100 days of Modi government disappointing: Congress New Delhi (IANS): The Congress said Tuesday the first 100 days of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government were "disappointing" and the people of the country had been "misled". "Modi is a dream merchant, who came to power by selling false hopes," Congress leader Anand Sharma said at a press conference here and dismissed the 100 days of Modi's rule as high on rhetoric and low on performance. "The 100 days story of this government has proved to be disappointing, characterised by non-fulfillment of promises, undermining of institutions, the compromising of administration and governance and promotion of a work culture nurtured by distrust and fear," he said. He alleged that the BJP captured power by making lofty promises and selling unre-

alistic dreams. Sharma said this amounted to a "fraud with people", who were "misled". He accused the government of politicising the educational system in the country. "In schools, a different kind of history is being taught," Sharma said. "This is already happening in history books of Gujarat". "Why is education being politicised? Institutions and research and science must remain out of politics," he added. The former commerce minister said that Modi did not consult the states before deciding to do away with the Planning Commission. "The arbitrary decision of dismantling the Planning Commission strikes at the base of our federal structure," he said. "Has the sanctity of a cabinet form of government been upheld or a silent shift is

being made to a presidential form where only one voice counts?" Sharma added that Home Minister Rajnath Singh was not allowed to appoint his own private secretary. "Around 18 ministers of the present government have serious criminal charges against them," he added. He said while the BJP during its election

campaign had promised to bring back black money nothing has come till now. He expressed concern over the situation along borders with Pakistan and China and said there were ceasefire violations day in and day out by Islamabad. Government should show forthrightness in foreign policy engagements. It cannot be just rhetorics and theatrics," he said.

Man held in Haryana for selling gender-test kit Chandigarh/Gurgaon (IANS): A Delhi-based man has been arrested for selling kits to people to help them illegally decide the gender of their unborn child, officials said Tuesday. State health department secretary and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Rakesh Gupta said Sanjay Khatana of Delhi was arrested after being caught red-handed by a three-member team of health officials. "The accused attracted couples desiring to have a male child through a website www.babygenderchoose.co m - and after obtaining the request and money, he sent them the kits through courier. He runs an office on Lawrence Road in Delhi. The

accused used to sell a kit for Rs.6,000," Gupta said. The health officials set up a decoy customer, Gunjan Malhotra, who sought two kits from Khatana and paid Rs.12,000. "The accused (who came to deliver the kits) described the procedure of taking medicine and assured that he had given these kits to about 60-70 couples in Punjab and Haryana and had not received any complaint. He said the success rate was almost 100 percent and they need not worry," Gupta said. On the complaint of the FDA officials, police arrested Khatana and booked him under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act. Gupta said the three-mem-

ber team that nabbed the accused comprised Gurgaon drug control officer Amandeep and deputy civil surgeons Saryu Sharma and Vijay. He said the decoy customer and Sharma called the accused to Khandsa Road in Gurgaon for delivering two kits for conceiving a boy. They paid the accused for two kits. Sharma, who posed as a private practitioner, had put her signature on four currency notes, based on which Khatana was arrested. She told the accused that Gunjan Malhotra has three daughters and she wanted a boy this time. Under the PNDT Act, anyone found guilty can be jailed for up to three years or fined Rs.1 lakh or both.

Manila (IANS): How about an exotic Indian wedding on the fine white sand beaches in the Philippines with the ocean waves lapping gently beside? The Philippines is planning to promote its beach resorts as a wedding destination, complete with all arrangements, including visa facilitation for guests, in order to boost tourism from India. "We are keen to promote the Philippines as a wedding destination, especially Cebu and Boracay. We are putting together packages for Indian weddings, that would include hotels, organising the event and facilitating visas for guests," Verna CovarBuensuceso, director market development of tourism department, told a visiting group of Indian journalists here. In order to promote wedding tourism, the

tourism department is working out packages and is in talks with interested parties, he said. The Philippines is also keen to promote its pretty islands for Bollywood filmmakers to shoot their films in and hold its glitzy awards functions, he said. "We want to promote the Philippines for shoots. We brought a lot of Bollywood producers here for talks. We are at present in talks with some Indian film producers to hold shootings here," said Verna. On promoting the Southeast Asian island country located in the western Pacific Ocean as a wedding destination, the official said "we are sitting with a wedding planner for Indian weddings". Some Indians have held weddings in Cebu, an island province in the Philippines comprising several islands. Boracay is

a small island in the Philippines located approximately 315 km south of Manila. He said they would provide visa facilitation for around 500 guests from India for a wedding. Of the 52,000 Indians who visited the Philippines in 2013, just 17,000 of them were tourists, he said. The Philippines is deliberating on providing visa on arrival to Indians, which, if agreed to, would help to boost tourism. One major hindrance to increasing tourism flows between the two countries is the lack of direct flights. Philippines Airlines discontinued its direct flight programme to India some years ago after the route failed to prove economically viable. Now, the Jet Airways and the Philippines Airlines are in talks to revive direct flights between the two countries, he said.

Among the countries which send the largest number of tourists to this former Spanish colony and later American colony are the US, which sends over 700,000 tourists a year, followed by China, which sends 500,000 tourists a year. Europeans constitute 11 percent of the total tourist arrivals, comprising 400,000, he said. Manila is busy upgrading its infrastructure in preparation for next year's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. With frequent traffic jams proving a constant irritant to motorists and tourists alike, the Philippine authorities are "speeding up the traffic infrastructure", said the official. This would include skyways on top of main roads and linking of highways and access roads to the airport, he added.

Indian woman charged for having illegitimate child Dubai (IANS): An Indian man filed a case in a court in the UAE against his wife, who gave birth to a child in 2010 despite their not having sex for eight years, a media report said Tuesday. The man, who is identified only as R.J, 48, said he moved to a new job in Kuwait in 2006 and left his wife and only son in the UAE. R.J said that last year his friends, who live in the

UAE, told him that his wife had given birth to his child in 2010. "I knew then that she gave birth April 22, 2010, to a boy at the Welcare hospital (Dubai) and registered him under my name - but we hadn’t had sex since 2006 and he couldn’t be my son," R.J was quoted as saying. The husband then went to a police station and file a case against his wife, S.S,40, who is a nurse.

She was then charged with having consensual sex with a man other than her husband and having a child with him. She was also charged with forging the child's birth certificate by registering him under her husband's name. In addition, she was charged with using the forged certificate to obtain a residency visa and UAE identity card for her son.

S.T, 44, who is also an Indian, the biological father of the child, was charged with having consensual sex with the nurse. Both defendants denied the charges at the Dubai Criminal Court Tuesday morning. Medical examination confirmed that the defendants were the biological parents of the child. The next hearing is Sep 23.

Indian-born researcher at Stanford wins major award Bangalore (IANS): Himanshu Asnani, 27, an Indian-born mathematics researcher at Stanford University Electrical Engineering School in the US, is the winner of the Marconi Society Paul Baran young scholar award for 2014. "The prestigious award will be presented to Asnani at our annual event Oct 2 at the National Academies of Sciences in Washington," the society's young scholar selection committee Bob Tkach told IANS through email Tuesday. Asnani, who hails from Kota in Rajasthan, is also a system engineer at the Swedish telecom major's R&D centre in the Silicon Valley. Though Asnani aspired to become a neurosurgeon as a child under the influence of his parents who are doctors, his exposure to mathematics and physics got him fourth rank in the IIT joint entrance exam. Graduating from IIT-Bombay in electrical engineering in 2009, Asnani went to the US to do masters (MS) at Stanford and enrolled for Ph.D in the same subject. Named after Nobel laureate Guglielmo Marconi, who invented radio, and set up in 1974 by his daughter Gioia Marconi Braga through an endowment, the Marconi Society awards annually outstanding individuals whose scope of work and influence emulate the principle of 'creativity in service to humanity' that inspired Marconi. The award, with a cash prize of $4,000 (Rs.2.4 lakh), is given to scholars who are 27 or younger at the time of the nomination, as Marconi was 27 years when he invented the wireless telegraphy. 200,000 Indians granted Saudi visas in one month Riyadh (IANS): More than 200,000 Indians, mostly domestic helpers and labourers, were granted visas by Saudi authorities in one month, an official said Monday. "Since we resumed bringing in Indian workers at the end of Ramadan (in July), the number of visas has reached 220,000," Gulf News quoted Ahmad Al Fuhaid, the labour ministry undersecretary for international affairs, as saying. "Around 44,000 visas were for domestic helpers while the others were for workers in the public and private sectors," he said. However, the official added that the arrival of helpers and workers into the kingdom could take some time. "There are several procedures to be followed including security and medical checks and proper qualification and training," he said.

stipends to its winners for many years to enable them attend our events, as we consider them to be an integral part of the Society," Tkach said. Asnani's academic and entrepreneurial achievements also stood out in a review of the nominated researchers from the world over the society undertakes every year. "Asnani's outstanding work and contribution to point-to-point and multi-terminal channel coding and source coding problems were impressive," Tkach said. The award recognises individuals who demonstrate exceptional scientific talent and entrepreneurial skills at a young age with potential to make advances in telecom and internet. "In studies too, Asnani made profound contributions to our understanding of the fundamental limits in new communication and data compression (point-

to-point and multi-terminal). His work spans from theoretical to the applied," his primary advisor at Stanford Tsachy

Weissman said in a statement from the university.

Despite the dog bite menace issue pending before the high court through a petition filed by local resident Gurmukh Singh, the municipal corporation has virtually washed its hands off it. The petitioner's counsel has pointed out that while victims of pet dog bites get compensation from the pets' owners under the rules, there are no rules governing stray dogs which had to be taken care of by the municipal corporation here.

With rising number of dog bite cases across the union territory in the past three years, the menace of strays has become serious for city residents. In May this year, one stray dog bit at least 30 people in a locality in Sector 20 within 24 hours. From a nine-year-old girl to septuagenarians - the biting dog had a free run of its victims. "The terror of stray dogs is such that we are afraid to go out freely. We cannot allow children to go out and play as they can be attacked and bitten by stray dogs," Sector 20 resident Surinder Singh told IANS. The municipal corporation has been under fire from residents in the city for its failure to control the stray dogs menace. According to municipal records, the number of stray dogs in the city stands at over 7,850. The corporation claimed that it had sterilized nearly 7,000 stray dogs. Yet, the number of stray dogs continues to increase. The city saw nearly 3,000 dog bite cases in the first four months of this year. In 2013, there were nearly 8,000 dog bite cases. In 2012, the dog bite cases stood at nearly 6,900. Nominated councillor D.S. Sandhu said: "It is a complete failure on the part of the MC to control the menace. The sterilization results are not visible on the ground. I am sure the MC is providing fictitious figures, and nothing is being seriously done in this regard." The high court recently questioned the logic of a team of councillors and officials from the MC undertaking a tour of Nashik to study how the municipal authorities in that Maharashtra city were dealing with the stray dog menace. The corporation's general house has objected to this. "They (councillors) have felt that in a democratic set-up, it is well within its (MC's) competency to take a decision as deemed fit for the welfare of city." "The councillors have also expressed their resentment over the questioning in which the study tour of Nashik has been discussed in the honourable court... expressed their grievances also as their (councillors') image has been diminished in the public," the MC resolution said. The resolution added that the corporation's sentiments should be conveyed to the high court on the next date of hearing of the matter. Councillors who went to Nashik said they found that the corporation there had a dedicated 24-hour helpline where people could complain about the dog menace. The Chandigarh MC does not have its own dedicated dog pound to catch and confine the stray dogs. It has to depend on NGOs, which have limited resources, to take care of the caught stray dogs.

High Court orders compensation for drowning victims in Chandigarh Chandigarh (IANS): Over 12 years after three students drowned in a pond created in a low-lying area here, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Tuesday held the Chandigarh administration responsible for not maintaining the area and ordered compensation of Rs.7.5 lakh each to the victims' families. Justice Ritu Bahri allowed the compensation to the parents of three young students of

Manimajra area who died by drowning in a pond there Aug 28, 2002. The victims - Ajay, Vijay Masih and Vijay Kumar - were class 8 students in a government school in Mani Majra. The three students were playing in the area where the pond had been created in a low-lying area that had not been properly maintained by the administration, counsel for the victims Satya Pal Jain said.

The parents of all three victims had filed a joint writ petition before the high court for compensation alleging that the officers of the union territory administration had ordered digging of earth, which resulted in a big low lying area, which ultimately got converted into a pond in the rainy season. Counsel for the victims had argued that the pond was the result of gross negligence on the

the low lying area. The court also observed that from the record and affidavits, it was clear that the administration's stand that the low-lying area was private land was proven as false. The court, along with the compensation of Rs.7.5 lakh each, also ordered payment of interest to the families of victims from the date of filing of the petition.

Punjab orders vigilance probe for immigrant staff

Policeman booked in Punjab for offender's abduction Chandigarh (IANS): A senior Punjab Police officer and three other people have been booked on charges of abducting a proclaimed offender from a police station, officials said Monday. Inspector General Gautam Cheema, posted in the information technology and telecommunications wing, was booked along with three others, including a woman, for allegedly abducting proclaimed offender Sumedh Gulati last week from a police station in Mohali, 10 km from here. No one has been arrested so far. Gulati was brought to the police station for questioning. He is said to be a close associate of

part of officers of the Chandigarh Administration, and the deaths had been caused because of this negligence. The administration had however sought to wash its hands off from the whole incident, saying that the land did not belong to the government and was privately-owned. However, the judge observed that it was the responsibility of the administration to maintain

property dealer Devinder Singh Gill, who was arrested recently by Haryana Police. Police said Cheema and his accomplices came to the police station in a private vehicle and took Gulati away even while he was being questioned after his arrest. Gill's wife Krispy complained to the police earlier that Cheema allegedly tried to molest her. A number of officers, including policemen, are alleged to have invested millions of unaccounted money with Gill in real estate but he conned them.

Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab government has ordered a vigilance probe into reports that some of its employees have migrated abroad while continuing their government jobs here. "Taking cognizance of the reports, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has ordered a detailed vigilance inquiry into the matter of state government employees who have taken permanent resident visas, green cards, immigrant status in different foreign countries in violation of existing government rules," a spokesperson of the Chief Minister's Office said. Badal directed the chief secretary to get the vigilance enquiry conducted and identify all those state government employees who had

acquired permanent resident visas, green cards or immigrant status in contravention of service rules and submit a report within two months. The Punjab government is seeing such cases as a "serious misconduct on the part of government employees", the spokesperson said. The chief minister asked the chief secretary to issue instructions to all financial commissioners and principal secretaries to ensure that the respective chief vigilance officers of all departments, corporations, boards assist the vigilance bureau in conducting the enquiry expeditiously by furnishing the detailed information sought by the bureau, the spokesperson said.

Under fire, Badal government amends sand mining rules Chandigarh (IANS): Under fire from various quarters for patronising the sand mafia in the state due to which sand prices went up significantly, the Parkash Singh Badal government in Punjab Tuesday approved amendments to the rules to make sand mining more transparent.

The state cabinet, at its meeting here, approved amendments in the Punjab Minor Mineral Rules, 2013, which will allow the state industries department to allot 37 quarries to the Punjab State Industrial Export Corporation (PSIEC) at a fixed rate of royalty to supply cheap sand and 'bajri' (grav-

el) to consumers. A spokesperson of the Chief Minister's Office said that the PSIEC would ensure the supply of sand and bajri at pit-head level at fair price. He said that the Punjab Mandi Board would supply the minerals to the consumers at their doorsteps or at market committee

yards by charging transport rates fixed by the transport department. "The cabinet also decided to bifurcate the post of director, industries and mining. A separate officer of the requisite seniority would be posted as director, mining, whose sole responsibility would be to look after the mining

of minor minerals in the state and supply thereof," the spokesperson said. The Badal government had been blamed for promoting a sand mafia which was carrying out sand mining and charging prices at will. This had led to escalation of sand prices in the past two years.

Punjab goes in for biometric office attendance Chandigarh (IANS): To ensure punctuality and discipline amongst public servants, the Punjab government will install biometric attendance devices in all public offices in the state and in Chandigarh, a spokesman said here Sunday. "Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has approved the installation of the biometric attendance devices in each and every public office in Punjab at Chandigarh as well as in districts and other field offices with a view to facilitate common masses," the spokesman said.

The move comes as part of the Punjab government's governance reforms campaign. Badal said the biometric attendance system will end the harassment of people coming to public offices in the absence of officers and staff by ensuring that the staff attend office on time. The Punjab government has, in recent weeks, conducted surprise checks in various offices to see if officers and staff were coming to office on time. In many cases, senior officers and employees were found absent from their offices. Most of them

were late-comers. The surprise checks were conducted by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, other ministers and senior officers themselves. Badal went to the additional secretariat building in Sector 9 early June 30 and found 14 senior officers absent from their offices. Another check on the state health department headquarters revealed that most senior health officials were not reaching on time. Simultaneous surprise checks were made on 984 government schools across Punjab recently.

ChaiTime 7 Secrets of Low-Stress Families . Low-stress couples don't divvy up the chores.

SUDOKU

HOW TO PLAY: Digits 1 through 9 will appear once in each zone - one zone is an outlined 3x3 grid within the larger puzzle grid. There are nine zones in the puzzle. Do not enter a digit into a box if it already appears elsewhere in the same zone, row across or column down the entire puzzle. Solve Time: Under 13 min. - Genius; 13-17 min - Scholar; 17-21 min - Smart; 21-25 min - Not bad; 25+ min - Keep practising DIFFICULTY LEVEL : MEDIUM

For one part of the project, KremerSadlik and a colleague studied how couples' division of housework was connected to their marital satisfaction. "Surprisingly, it didn't matter how evenly couples split up the chores," Kremer-Sadlik says. "We found that both spouses were happier when both felt like they were working toward the same goal, regardless of who did more" (and women did more across the board). "The women in happy marriages told us that their spouses seemed to have an understanding of what needed to be done. We obser ved their husbands setting the table while their wife was cooking, or straightening up without being told what to do." Sound too good to be true? Know that just talking about your joint mission for the family can eliminate much of the "keeping score" conflict. "The happy couples often discussed their shared goals for their family," she says. "There was more of a we-ness there — and that spilled over into chores. Their attitude was more, 'We do for our family,' not, 'I do this for you.'" But with two working parents' and children's schedules to coordinate, researcher Darby Saxbe, Ph.D., a 33-year-old mom from Los Angeles, observed many couples communicating only about who needed to do what. "It felt like they were running a business!" Saxbe says. "Squeezing in little moments of fun

with your partner — whether you steal a quick kiss or exchange a joke — makes a difference." And researchers noticed that in some homes where the wives expressed more appreciation, the husbands also took on more household tasks.

2. Low-stress families find small moments of togetherness. Every mom fantasizes about taking the perfect family vacation or spending a blissed-out day with her husband and kids. But real-life bonding time is made up of much smaller events. "I think a lot of us have this idea that we need to create big moments of togetherness, but we saw so many times that families had opportunities to connect throughout the day that they weren't aware of," Kremer-Sadlik says. Those small moments might be the 10 minutes you spend braiding your daughter's hair or your time spent cheering on your son at his Little League game. "I remember one moment when a daughter and mom were folding

laundry, and the daughter stuck her foot in a sock and challenged her mom to find her foot among the pile of laundry," she recalls. "It was a loving moment of laughing and playing around in the midst of daily life.” Belinda Campos, Ph.D., whose focus in the study was family relationships, noticed the same thing. "There's this cultural ideal of wanting to carve out quality time," says the 36-year-old from Irvine, CA. "But many families overlooked the daily stuff that keeps you connected." One example was the way families reacted when dads came home from work. "There were two types of behaviors among the families: those where the wives and children greeted the dad with a warm hello, and those where the children never got up from their video games and the wives greeted Dad with logistics like, 'Did you pick up the chicken for dinner?'" Campos says. "But those seconds after Dad walked in the door may have shaped his mood for the night. It's such a small thing; that's the moment to acknowledge that a person is coming into a place where he matters."

toward them, and the smoother the households ran," Kremer-Sadlik says of her findings from a previous study. "Their mini goals throughout the day, such as getting dinner on the table or finishing homework, ran more smoothly and more pleasantly." The same was true for parents who set the rules for the kids, as opposed to those who let their children help make the decisions. "When parents delegated chores to their children, rather than asking them which chores they wanted to do, there were fewer tantrums and arguments," Campos says. "There was still affection and humor in homes where parents were the bosses, but there was never a question of who was in charge.” To Be Continued

3. Low-stress parents are role models — not pals. Treating your partner with respect is not only good for your marriage — it also actually affects the whole family dynamic. My 100m record pretty much out of reach: Bolt Bangalore (IANS): Usain Bolt would have made Muhammad Ali proud as he vowed the star-struck audience here Tuesday with oneliners and a bit of justifiable arrogance laced

with humour, reminiscent of the boxing great during his salad days decades ago. In city on one-day sponsor commitment trip, Bolt devoted a little over 30 minutes fielding

questions from local athletes, the twitterati and the media during a session that also showcased the Jamaican’s penchant for showmanship besides his obvious bias for the 200 metres

sprint rather than 100, disciplines in which he holds the world records of 19.19 seconds and 9.58 secs respectively. When asked about the possibility of him further lowering the 100m record, Bolt was quick to say that he was eyeing a sub-19 run in the 200 and if he improves his half-lap sprint then it would also help him do the 100 faster. “I think there is room for improvement in the 200. It is very technical, but possible. I have always wanted to run sub-19. If I keep chasing the 200 record, am sure, it will help me in the 100,” said the 28-year old Bolt who also holds the 4x100 world record of 38.64 along with compatriots Yohan Blake, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter. Bolt was quite firm in saying that his world record in 100 metres was “pretty much out of reach”, but there were quite a few runners who could challenge him if not beat him. "Track and field is a weird sport. It's all about focus and mental capacity. It's hard to pick any one person, but my coach thinks Justin Gatlin is good.

Then there are Tyson Gay and Yohan Blake…so many guys are coming up. But I am not going to let anybody beat me!” thundered a confident Bolt. While on the subject, Bolt pointed out that he had worked hard to be where he is and that his rivals will have to do much the same to match him. “As an athlete, I have seen records come and go. They have always been broken, but if you want to be as great as me, you have to work very hard. That's why my records will stand the time,” said the sixfooter Jamaican without bothering to couch his words in modesty. In a lighter vein, Bolt, who also follows cricket keenly, opined that South African star AB de Villiers was the fastest cricketer over 100 metres and fellowJamaican Chris Gayle was probably the slowest. Reflecting on a question about his future and specifically the 2016 Rio Olympics, Bolt minced no words in saying he would probably quit athletics “a season after Rio” when he will be 31. Looking back, Bolt said he chose athletics

over cricket on his father’s insistence when he was still in school. “My father is a huge cricket fan, but when I got to higher secondary, I had two options cricket or athletics. My dad said because of the system in Jamaica, it would be better to take up athletics. He said, you just have to run fast in athletics to get into the National team while it was tougher to get into the national cricket team. So blame it on my dad,” said Bolt amidst laughter. Bolt also spoke at length about his other passion, the Usain Bolt Foundation for which he devotes considerable amount of his time and energy and he hoped that his efforts would make a difference to the lives of children. “The Foundation is about creating opportunities for children through education and cultural development for a positive change. “We provide the kids equipment, books and such, so that they too can chase their dreams,” said Bolt who is also involved with the Samsung Cup football tournament for school children in Jamaica.

2014 Chevrolet Sonic RS. Small, fast and nimble as a cat! By Autoreviewman The new sporty Sonic RS version 5-door hatchback, Werecently proves the Europeans will not have the monopoly on: small, fine-handling, fun to sub compacts. On the technical side, the RS still features the 1.4-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine as in the up-scale Sonic LTZ, producing the same 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque, but adds: a six-speed transmissions with quicker gear ratios, lowered and stiffer suspension dampers and four-wheel disc brakes unique to the RS. The power output is very good and beats competitors such as the Honda Fit Sport, the Ford Fiesta and the Toyota Yaris. Unique exterior dress up items include: special matt finish five- spoke 17-inch wheels with205/50R17 tires, special RS-exclusive front/rear fascias, rear spoiler, lower rockers panel extension and a chrome exhaust tip.

The interior cabin receives a dose of adrenalin with nice ‘RS’ embossed leather seats with faux suede trim, contrasting red stitching on the seats and mats, RS badges and a funky, thick rimmed- racestyle flat-bottom steering

wheel and aluminum pedals. Our blackpainted tester certainly looked cool and ready to rock. The RS also featuresChevrolet's MyLink infocommutainment systemas standard on the RS,

interfacing through a seven-inch colour touchscreen. This clever system enables full use of: smartphones to access music, video, photo, phone books, navigation and other information into the vehicle — via an available smartphone app.OnStar, which comes standard on all Sonics (a subscription is required after the first six months) is also fitted.. The Sonic RS comes in at a base price of $23,995. Two other trim levels are offered: the mid-range LT ($16,495) and top-of-the-line LTZ ($20,495.) Added features on the LT include air conditioning (available on the LS as a $1,150 option), cruise control, audio system upgrade and power windows. Opting for the LTZ adds such amenities as heated leather seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels, more audio upgrades and enhanced connectivity features. Our Sonic tester also added: a power tilt, sliding sunroof and black granite metallic paint options ($1,395) for a final tally of $26,940 including destination charge. All Sonics equipped with a manual gearbox get a hill hold assist system as standard equipment. The Peace of Mind Package, supplements the standard six air bags (dual-stage front air bags, two front-seat side air bags and dual head curtain units with rollover protection) with dual outboard rear-seat side air bags and dual knee units, including one for the passenger — a segment exclusive. This package adds $465 to the list price. Inside, the Sonic is modern and sporty with unique instrument panel and center console design available in titanium finish. The audio controls are mounted on top and large round climate controls below in the fascia. Front bucket seats are standard and optionally heated, while the rear seats fold flat. Cargo area in the hatchback is 869 litres (30.7 cu. ft) with the rear seats folded. The cargo area in the fivedoor also has a removable false floor that creates a level surface when the seats are folded. Electronic power steering is standard, and Engineers working with the Corvette apparently helped tune the suspension and handling! On the road, the RS feels fast with the no severe turbo lag. The slick six speed manual shifter has a light action and is fast enough for spirited acceleration with a 0-100 km/h dash of around 10.0 seconds. Combine the tactile steering, slightly lower profile, firmer suspension, and the Sonic's compact dimensions and you get a fun car to drive. Fast bends, long curves and the cut and thrust of traffic show off the Sonics eager to please chassis dynamics and tossability. Even the larger 17 inch wheels and rubber do not upset the well-engineered chassis, delivering a firm, yet comfortable ride on all surfaces.During testing our five-door Sonic proved to be a fun to drive, zippy car. There is a price to pay however, the small 1.4 liter engines has to work hard to keep rev ups, and with revised shorter transmission gearing –highway fuel consumption is up a tad at (city/hwy): 8.2/5.9 L/100 km. To sum up, no vices really to report. Compared to the old Chevrolet Aveo model the Sonic replaces - quality, materials, fit, and finish are all vastly improved. The Sonic RS feels faster, looks more youthful, and proves to be a very entertaining to drive subcompact car with plenty of room, features, practicality, and comfort. It is serious competition to the current crop of smaller hatchbacks, with its performance, and horsepower/ torque numbers. The LTZ offers a lot at a more modest price and the same engine and power specs, but the RS is tempting for its sporty clothing and higher excitement factor for sure. By Autoreviewman 2014 Chevrolet Sonic Five-door hatchback priced from $23,995 Price as tested with option, taxes and destination - $26,940.

2014 Jeep Compass Limited 4x4- The legend continues By Autoreviewman The 2014 Jeep Compass is no-nonsense value for money CUV that makes a lot of sense when you look at what it offers. With its trademark seven slat grille and mini Jeep Grand Cherokee looks, it has a distinct visual identity although softer with a few more curves to it than the older models. It looks, sleeker. Smoother and more refined both front and rear. For 2014 thereis some improvement off a 2013 revamp. Technically, there is a new sixspeed automatic gearbox as standard on the mid-level Compass and Limited trims. The new six-speed also features as standard, a manual shifting mode, and a shorter finaldrive ratio to promote quicker acceleration performance. Exterior upgrades include: new acoustic-laminated windshield, 18-inch aluminum wheels, new detailing around the fog lamps, halogen headlamps on Limited models and body-color side mirrors. The cabin also gains an optional backup camera and perforated leather seats and satinchrome accents on the doors, dash bin, center stack, and shifter.Best of all is the fact, the Compass outperforms most of it car-based rivals by virtue of its four wheel drive systems that signifies the Jeep brands strongest asset. There are two different four-wheel drive options; the Freedom Drive I system for mud, snow and light gravel and the Freedom Drive II with a continuously-variable type transaxle for the tough stuff. Engine option come in the form of either a 2.4 liter four cylinder unit or 2.0 liter four cylinder engine.I recommend getting the 172horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine over the 158-hp, 2.0-liter four, with its 24 pound-feet more torque advantage.Transmission options include a five-speed manual or the six speed automatic transmissions teamed with either the Freedom Drive I, or Freedom Drive II Allwheel drive systems. The Jeep Compass arrives in a number of model ranging from the base models to luxury clad north and Limited models- ranging in price from price from $17,745 - $27,795. Even base models come well-equipped, full power accessories, fog lamps, and alloy wheels are included in all models. The base Compass Sport 4x2 arrives with extras like cruise control, antilock brakes and side roof rails. Our top line 2014 Jeep Compass Limited 4x4 tester was base priced at $27,795, and came goodies such as a 6-way power driver’s seat with lumbar control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and a very nice slate gray/Saddle Tan leather-faced interior that look and felt very luxurious. Automatic climate control and 18-inch alloys arrive with the top Limited models. Options on our Limited (base price $27,795) tester included the Sun and Sound group with express power window close, 9 speaker Boston Acoustic Speaker with subwoofer($1,050) , 2 articulating liftgate speakers ($225), trailer prep group, Security and cargo convenience group, six- speed auto transmission with Autostick, Uconnect 40gb Hard drive. All options AC tax and destination charge meant a final tally of $34,425 for the vehicle. The Compass interior is well laid-out and comes with a number of innovative features, like a rechargeable flashlight and outward-facing tailgate speakers. Interior room is very good up front and adequate in the back cabin with a somewhat hard rear bench seat. Safety wise the Compass has: side curtain airbags, Brake Traction Control, Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation, front-seat side airbags, active head restraints, and a drivercontrolled three-mode Electronic Stability Program (ESP) are all included as standard features, and an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with rough-road detection are all included. On the road, the Compass has a car like ride and with some underpinnings from the last Dodge Caliber, handles fine with good reflexes on the highway and in the city.

Power for our test Compasswas via a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine producing 172 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 165 lbs. torque at 4,000

rpm. Official Canadian Energuide Fuel economy figures are officially at the 8 10.0 L/100km in the city and 7.4 L/100km on the highways. On our test, we took the Jeep Compass to a

combination of terrain, namely some light trails, rough country roads and a combination of urban and highway. The ride is comfortable on asphalt erring on soft with some body roll on corners due to the high center of gravity. On the light trails we took, the Compassperformed well with sufficient ground clearance, its wide track and compact wheelbase ensured safe low-level boonie bashing. With its Jeep heritage, very good off-road performance, generous equipment spec and decent pricing the Jeep Compass has a lot going for it. Pay a little more and the Limited model is the Compass to get providing more every day luxury touches and features in my opinion. By Autoreviewman 2014 Jeep Compass AWD Priced from $17,745 - $26,545

'Mardaani' style policing not ideal for police: Human rights body C O M M O N W E A LT H Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) has written an open letter urging that "Mardaani" shouldn't be shown to police officers because the style of policing in the film promotes "violent" and "encounterstyle" policing in the name of "efficiency". Impressed by Rani Mukerji’s new movie "Mardaani", which sees the actress playing a police officer on a mission against trafficking of girls, a top police officer in Bihar had requested district chiefs to arrange shows for all policemen to take inspiration from it for the fight against child trafficking.

But CHRI is against it, said a statement. CHRI has written an open letter to Arvind Pandey, CID Inspector General (Weaker Section), Bihar, who instructing his district SPs, GRP SPs and Commandants of Bihar Military Police that “Mardaani” be shown to all police officers. The letter reads: “No doubt the heroine of ‘Mardaani’, Shivani has certain qualities that every police officer must uphold. Honesty and corruption-free police conduct is what the public look up to police officers for. “However, Shivani’s

conduct involves gross violations of the Constitution, criminal procedure, and fair trial rights of the suspect. The increased emphasis on violence as the solution to solving all problems reemphasises bad practice, which the police is everyday being accused of.” The organisation com-

mends “the good intentions behind your order and are optimistic about it being the right opportunity to critically examine and continue the debate on tackling sex trafficking. However your endorsement promotes violent and ‘encounterstyle’ policing in the name of ‘efficiency’.”

The letter also read: “Criminals must be brought to justice through legal and responsible policing, else we risk losing the distinction between criminals and the police service.” “A further problem which the cadre could miss from an overemphasis on lessons from this film is the importance of dealing with the rescued persons with empathy and recognition because there are likely to be minor girls as victims who may have suffered both sexual and physical assault.” “While Shivani encourages the victims to violently kick the villain to

death. Far from this fairy tale ending, it is paramount that immediate medical relief that includes mental healthcare be provided for the victim. “We strongly urge that the style of policing in ‘Mardaani’ is not showcased to police officers, and we suggest that this be publicly clarified. "An example can be made of the procedural illegalities in the film with a training session to point out what is wrong, and what should be the correct procedure. This is a more educational way to use film as a tool for interactive police training.” (IANS)

Anurag won't release till satisfied: Sonu keen to maintain balance Kay Kay on 'Bombay Velvet' between Bollywood, southern cinema ACTOR Kay Kay Menon supports Anurag Kashyap's decision to release "Bombay Velvet" next year and says that the director shows his work only when he is a hundred percent satisfied. "Bombay Velvet" was initially slated to come out Nov 28, but now it will hit the screens in May 2015. With a lot of pending VFX work, the film cannot be readied for a November release. Kay Kay, who plays an investigative officer in the film, "doesn't regret the delay". He said: "They must have thought of it before making any decision. To show 1960s is not easy, so post production will take time and Anurag will not

release till he is satisfied with his work and that would be the reason they must have postponed it." "The film is based in 1960s, so the treatment is also different," he added. Kashyap's "Bombay Velvet" features Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles. "This is my fourth film with Anurag. We have a different connection and our working style is different. Without saying or talking much, we understand each other's silence. It's all about creativity," said Kay Kay, who worked with Kashyap in films like "Black Friday" and "Gulaal". (IANS)

SONU Sood, who started his acting journey down south, says he wants to strike a balance between the two thriving film industries - Bollywood and southern cinema. He said that he "started" down south, "so I still do them (southern movies)." "Southern films give me a chance to choose only a few Hindi films and the best ones. I try to maintain a balance," the 41year-old said Monday at the launch of a new perfume here.

"So, I have done around 55-60 films in many languages. Next month there

is a Telugu release and then 'Happy New Year' in October. So I will try to maintain a balance between the two industries," he added. "Happy New Year" has been directed by Farah Khan and has an ensemble cast that includes superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani and Vivan Shah, apart from Sonu. The film is slated for a Diwali release this year. (IANS)

BCCI signs five-year deal with MRF Pace Foundation Chennai (IANS) The Indian cricket board Tuesday signed a fiveyear deal with the MRF Pace Foundation to train fast bowlers under Australian fast bowling great Glenn McGrath. As a part of the deal, the Board of Control for

Cricket in India (BCCI) will send current and upcoming pace bowlers to the academy to train under McGrath, who is director of the Pace Foundation. The bowlers will be split into elite and probables categories and the training will be

imparted in batches. “This is a great moment. The association between the BCCI and the MRF Pace Foundation will hugely benefit Indian cricket in the long run,” BCCI interim president Shivlal Yadav said.

Sachin Tendulkar's autobiography releasing Nov 6 Mumbai (IANS): Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's "Playing It My Way - My Autobiography" will be released Nov 6, the publishers announced here Tuesday. "I knew that agreeing to write my story would need me to be completely honest, as that is the way I have always played the game. It would require talking about a number of aspects I have not shared in public before. "So here I am, at the end of my final innings, having taken that last walk back to the pavilion, ready to recount as many incidents as I can remember since first picking up a cricket bat as a child in Mumbai 35 years ago," Tendulkar said about his book. The autobiography is being published by Hodder & Stoughton and will be simultaneously released globally through Hachette India. "Over the past 25 years, Sachin Tendulkar's colossal batting triumphs for India have singled him out as one of the greatest players in cricket history. He is universally admired and respected and, most impressively, remains a very modest man," said Hodder & Stoughton edi-

tor Roddy Blookfield. The darling of millions of cricket lovers worldwide, Tendulkar retired from the game in 2013 after playing for 24 years. The most celebrated Indian cricketer and the highest run-scorer in the history of international cricket, Tendulkar was honoured with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on the last day of his cricket career. His autobiography details his remarkable story, from playing in the by-lanes of sub-urban Mumbai to his first Test cap at 16, to his 100th international century capped by the emotional final farewell that brought India to a standstill. The boisterous

Mumbai youngster's boundless energy found expression in record breaking batting exploits as a schoolboy upon which was launched the career of a cricketing phenomenon. Before long, he was the cornerstone of India's batting line-up, his every move watched by a cricket-crazy nation. Before Tendulkar, never did a cricketer perform at international level for so long and with style, scoring so many runs and centuries in both Tests and one-dayers, with the burden of so many expectations. He brought together a shocked India by defiantly scoring a Test century shortly after the Mumbai terror attacks of Nov 26, 2008. Some of his crowning achievements for India include World Cup and India topping the World Test rankings. Despite his international celebrity status, Tendulkar has always remained a very private person, devoted to his family and country. "Playing It My Way: My Autobiography", will provide an insight into his personal life and promises a frank and revealing account of his sporting life, the publishers say.

Korean pop music finds growing following in India AFTER having regaled Indian fans with a firstof-its-kind performance in the capital, members of South Korean band N-Sonic hope more artists from their homeland get to perform K-POP in the country.

Formed in 2011, N-Sonic is a K-POP band of six boys - J. Heart, Sihoo, Byeol, Minkee, Black J and Zion, who are popular for giving hit numbers like "Crazy" and "Run & Run". They were here to perform and judge the finale of the recently concluded K-POP (Korean pop) India Festival, which saw participation from Indians who sang and danced to catchy Korean numbers. They felt "honoured" to be part of the event, which was presented by the Korean Cultural Centre and coorganised by the Korea Tourism Organization. "The chance given to us is important for further relationship (between South Korea and India) too. More artists can come if Indian audiences like us. That way we feel responsible and honoured. We hope it encourages more exchange programmes. We would love to come back here," J. Heart told IANS here. Their genre is Korean style of western pop music and emerged in the 1990s. It is a combination of popular music like dance-pop, pop ballad, electronic, rock and hip-hop. So, it is no surprise that the vocalists of the band look 'up to American band 'N Sync' that was a pop sensation in the 1990s. "We liked their dancing style and their

personal touch to their attire before performing. "Our stylist comes up with a concept and within that boundary we discuss and try to find our own style," said J. Heart, who was dressed in a deep blue suit and a crisp white shirt. That music knows no boundary was a fact that resonated when they arrived here for their performance and were greeted by excited Indian fans dressed in t-shirts with their photographs on them. The rise of participation in the fest from mere 37 entries in 2012 to 130 for the third edition this year proves that there is no slowing down when it comes to fan base for the K-POP genre. The boys only have encouraging words to share with their fans in India. "Never give up. If you follow what you like, success will be guaranteed. We were touched to see Indian contestants singing and dancing to Korean numbers," said Sihoo. Divided into song and dance categories, the fest saw participants from Chennai, Mumbai, Guwahati and Delhi. While Indian music lovers are grooving to the tunes of South Korean artists - remember Psy of "Gangnam style" fame - the N-Sonic

band members are also all praise for desi beats. "India has a strong unique style. It is a good place to learn music. We would like to collaborate with Indian artists some day," said J. Heart. Though they are not good with names of Indian music artists, they are familiar with Bollywood's beloved 'badshah' Shah Rukh Khan. When asked about Bollywood, Sihoo

promptly said: "Shah Rukh Khan. I got to watch 'My Name Is Khan', then I searched for his details online and became his fan!" J. Heart also nodded in agreement and said that his favourite SRK movie is "Om Shanti Om". In fact, when his fans got to know about his liking for the film, he delivered the film's popular dialogue - "Ek chutki sindoor ki keemat tum kya jaano Ramesh babu", with a little help from an Indian emcee. Apples contain pectin which is a gel-like fiber that can prevent the putrefaction of protein in the digestive tract. Pectin works like an intestinal broom to clean and sweep out debris from the colon. This is particularly beneficial for those who suffer from constipation or impactions. Apple pectin has also been shown to bind with radioactive residues and toxic heavy metals such as lead and mercury and safely remove them from the body. One more benefit of apple pectin is that

The November Man (PG) ***

Two James Bond veterans take centre stage in

The November Man. Said to be based on A series of best selling books this Touchwood pictures release is now enlightening audiences at The International Village cinemas in downtown Vancouver.

Classify this film as the spy who came in from the cold. Somewhat similar to Kevin Costner's last outing Pierce Brosnan ((Goldeneye) returns to active duty -only this time he's not working for her majesty's Secret service.

happy. Cast as this shining (?) light is Luke Bracey and together the pair wind up in Eastern mission on a perilous mission rife with significant political overtones. Forget about the new thriller Lucy. In The November Man women

play pivotal parts in this high stakes game of world conquest a la Risk. Lots of intrigue, blackmail and rogue operators unfold against the conic. Backgrounds of Belgrade and Montevideo, Action fans will enjoy this modern day espionage thriller. Expect lots of chases and fights. Despite beginning to show his age Brosnan still looks good and he's got "it". Fellow 007 actress Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) also sizzles as an East European caught up in a Cold War power/passion play with severe repercussions. Quality director Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job) achieves a nice spy lark with enough sly surprises to leave you shaken and stirred.

Daily breakfast may protect kids from diabetes London, Sep 3 (IANS) Make sure that your kids do not skip breakfast as researchers have found that regular consumption of a healthy breakfast may help children lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. "The observations suggest that regular breakfast consumption, particularly involving consumption of a high fibre cereal, could protect against the early development of type 2 diabetes

risk," said lead researcher Angela Donin from the St. George's University of London in Britain. The researchers reached these conclusions after conducting a cross-sectional study of 4,116 primary school children, aged between 910 years in Britain. The children

Spinach drink kills craving for junk food London, Sep 3 (IANS) Cannot hold that craving for unhealthy foods such as sweets or fast food? Try this spinach drink. A spinach extract containing green leaf membranes called thylakoids decreases "hedonic hunger" - eating for pleasure rather than to satisfy a biological need by up to 95 percent and increases weight loss by 43 percent, new research indicates. Taking thylakoids reinforces the body's production of satiety hormones and suppresses hunger which leads to better appetite control, healthier eating habits and increased weight loss. "Having a drink containing thylakoids before breakfast reduces cravings and keeps you feeling satisfied all day," said Charlotte Erlanson-Albertsson, a professor of medicine and physiological chemistry at the Lund University in Sweden. The study involved 38 overweight women and ran for three months. Every morning before breakfast the participants had a green drink. Half of the women were given five grams of spinach extract and the other half were given a placebo. In the study, the control group lost an average of 3.5 kg while the group that

responded to questions about how often and what they ate for breakfast, and blood tests measured diabetes risk markers such as fasting insulin, glucose, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c).

Twenty six percent of children reported not having breakfast every day and they were found to be at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The study appeared in the journal PLOS Medicine.

2014 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0T Cabriolet: Open air motoring at its best By Autoreviewman The current Volkswagen Beetle arrives in a coupe or convertible version and offers its distinctive looks,

heritage and iconic status as the main selling points. The rag top version offers much appeal in a world of amorphous, mundane looking vehicles. For 2014 the

Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible still remains a charming, cute and rather sexy looking stunner of a drop And it is heartening to see Volkswagen have a new

redesigned Beetle that is more impressive than the outgoing model in so many areas. On the outside the first thing apparent the new car is now bigger: 84 mm wider, 152 mm longer and 12 mm lower than the previous model. The 2014 Beetle also has more rear headroom and a practical userfriendly rear seat. Some cool features with a retro touch include, interior dash and door caps on all but the 2.0T models that are color matched to the exterior colours, as found on old Beetles The rear-view mirror is a retro shaped oval affair like the original and the 2014 Beetle features the ‘Beetle box’, dash box with an upward raising lid. Our highly equipped tester’sReef Blue metallic exterior color looked just stunning. To operate the Convertible's automatic power roof, one button on the console takes it up or down, the fabric roof is a well finished and durable looking affair There are now three engine choices a 2.5-litre, 170-hp, 5-cylinder with a 5speed manual or 6-speedautomatic, a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder (210 horsepower) with either a 6speed manual or a 6speedDirect Shift Gearbox (DSG) automatic and the new 2.0 TDI diesel engine The available Fender premium audio system sounds

superb and is well worth the money if audiophile sound quality is important to you. Also in the mix was Navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, leather upholstery, heated front seats and an eight-way manual driver's seat (six-way passenger), three-colour ambient lighting (lights up the door speaker rings and the door caps underpanel in three different colors.)Cargo capacity is 436 L (15.4 cu.ft.). Our DSG transmission equipped model included steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual control. The interior dash maybe retro looking, but the Beetles interior is modern, well finished and very nicely equippedwhichever Beetle you choose to drive, I for one really like the ease of getting in and out and the nice high driving position, great visibility and comfortable seats. Frontseat cabin room by the way is exceptional with plenty of room to stretch out.On the road, the Beetle feels very smooth and offers a comfortable fun driving experience. It drives stable and composed thanks to its McPherson struts up front and torsion beam suspension out back that absorb less than perfect roadbumps. Potholes and irregularities. The Sports suspension package does of a good job of offering decent

enough handling without a jarring overly harsh ride. Cowl shake, the bane of convertibles is undetectable. The very responsive DSG transmission in the 2.0T is a smooth operating transmission option that makes great use of the engines power band. The 2014 VW Beetle is actually great fun to drive around town and on curvy roads, thanks to typically firm direct and responsive VW steering. Electronic Stability control and ASR, (Traction Control.) also offer safety and better control in slippery conditions. The Beetle convertible is a lot of fun, even though a dump of week- long snow meant the hood on our tester stayed more up than down! Overall the BeetleCabriolets high level of good looks, comfort, performance and unique style makes it a winner as a retro classic with a modern twist. If performance, fuel economy, reliability and long-time enjoyment and ownership are what you desire, you cannot go wrong especially when the weather turns warm.Highly recommended for rag top lovers everywhere.By Autoreviewman 2014 Volkswagen beetle Cabriolet: Price as tested $38,250 plus destination and PDI

With its new 2.7-litre EcoBoost® with standard Auto Start-Stop and new 3.5litre V6 with twin independent variable camshaft timing, the 2015 Ford F-150 resets the bar in light-duty pickup 2.7-litre EcoBoost power The high-output, twin-turbo 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 features an entirely new design that delivers power and performance in a strong, smart package. The engine produces 325 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque – improving the power-to-weight ratio of the 2015 truck by 15 per cent over the 2014 5.0-litre V8-equipped F-150 with similar torque output, thanks to vehicle lightweighting. The 2.7-litre EcoBoost 4x2 has a maximum payload rating of 2,250 pounds (1021 kg) and maximum tow rating of 8,500 pounds (3856 kg), ideal for meeting mid-range capability needs. Boosting 2.7-litre EcoBoost fuel efficiency is the debut of standard Auto Start-Stop technology for F-150. This technology, specially tuned for truck customers, shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at a stop. When the brake is released, the engine restarts

quickly. Auto Start-Stop helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions when the truck is stopped and the engine is off. The technology is off when towing or in four-wheel-drive mode. The 2.7-litre EcoBoost engine also features Ford’s first use of a compacted graphite iron cylinder block in

Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup truck with identical displacement 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine. Ford testing shows the 2.7litre EcoBoost also outperforming Ram 1500 3.0-litre V6 EcoDiesel and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-litre V8 while towing a 7,000-pound (3175 kg) enclosed trailer up

a gasoline engine, the same material used in Ford’s 6.7litre Power Stroke® turbo diesel V8 in Super Duty trucks. The composite CGI/aluminum cylinder block saves weight while providing strength where it’s needed most for durability. Advanced technology, power and efficiency combine to create an engine for F150 that boasts more than twice the horsepower, torque and towing capability of the

Davis Dam in Arizona. This is the same grade the Society of Automotive Engineers uses for its J2807 towing testing standards, which the 2015 Ford F-150 will follow. Thanks to vehicle weight savings, the standard 3.5-litre V6 with Ti-VCT offers a 5 per cent improvement in powerto-weight ratio over the larger 3.7-litre V6 in the 2014 F-150, with better fuel efficiency and performance.

Toyota Canada tops Government of Canada’s list of most fuel efficient vehicles Toronto, ON– Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has named six Toyota Canada vehicles as best-in-class for fuel efficiency for the 2014 model year. That’s more than any other auto manufacturer. Toyota’s long-standing commitment to environmental leadership is demonstrated by the innovations that continue to improve conventional vehicles as well as the research and

development into advanced technologies such as hybrids, plug-in technologies, and hydrogen fuel cells. For decades Toyota has been bringing Canadians fuel efficient vehicle choices while still maintaining the performance and versatility that Canadians drivers expect. As a testament to Toyota’s approach, The TCI vehicles – which were awarded by NRCan

for the lowest estimated annual fuel use in their respective classes – include: • Toyota Prius c (Compact car) • Toyota Prius (Mid-size car) • Toyota Prius v (Mid-size station wagon) • Toyota Tacoma (Small pickup truck) • Toyota Highlander Hybrid AWD LE Plus (Standard SUV) • Scion iQ (Minicompact car)

This marks the 14th year in a row that a vehicle from the Prius family has been named to the list, including the Prius v leading the way in each of the three years it has been on the market. In fact, this year every Prius hybrid model has won its respective category. It is also the fourth consecutive year the Tacoma pickup has received the accolade. “Superior fuel efficiency has

always been a hallmark of Toyota vehicles,” said Seiji Ichii, CEO and President, Toyota Canada Inc. “This recognition from Natural Resources Canada is an important validation of our leadership in this important area. It reflects how we’re constantly innovating to give drivers the ever-improving fuel efficiency they value.”
