Diwali is regarded as one of the most important festival of the Hindu calendar. It is celebrated across the nation with great pomp and excitement. The festival is mainly associated with lights as it is called the festival of light. On the day of the festival diyas (small clay lamps) are lit in everybody's home irrespective of their social status. The name Diwali signifies 'rows of lighted lamps'. Diwali is a five-day festival, beginning on the 15th day of the Hindu calendar month of Kartika (Ashwin). By the Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls in October or November. Diwali marks the beginning of the Hindu and Gujarati New Year and is celebrated with the lighting of lamps and candles, and lots of

Leading into Truth and Light Surrey City Council wishes you and your family a very HAPPY DIWALI!
THIS Diwali which leads us into Truth and Light is celebrated on a nation-wide scale on Amavasya - the 15th day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Ashwin (Aasho) (October / November) every year. It symbolizes that age-old culture of our country which teaches us to vanquish ignorance that subdues humanity and to drive away darkness that engulfs the light of knowledge. Diwali, the festival of lights even to-day in this modern world projects the rich and glorious past of our country and teaches us to uphold the true values of life. The word "Diwali" is the corruption of the Sanskrit word "Deepavali" - Deepa meaning light and Avali, meaning a row. It means a row of lights and indeed illumination forms its main attraction. Every home lowly or upscale - the hut of the poor or the mansion of the rich - is alit with the orange glow of twinkling diyas-small earthen lamps - to welcome Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Multi-coloured Rangoli designs, floral decorations and fireworks lend grandeur to this festival which heralds joy, mirth and happiness in the ensuing year. This festival is celebrated on a grand scale in almost all the regions of India and is looked upon mainly as the beginning of New Year. As such the blessings of Lakshmi, the celestial consort of Lord Vishnu are invoked with prayers. Even countries like Gkyena, Thailand, Trinidad, Siam and
Malaya celebrate this festival but in their own ways. This Diwali festival, it is surmised dates back to that period when perhaps history was not written, and in its progress through centuries it lighted path of thousands to attain the ultimate good and complete ecstasy. Diwali or more aptly Deepavali is very enthusiastically celebrated for five continuous days and each day has its significance with a number of myths, legends and beliefs. The FIRST day is called DHANTERAS or DHANTRAYODASHI which falls on the thirteenth day of the month of Ashwin. The word "Dhan" means wealth. As such this day of the five-day Diwali festival has a great importance for the rich mercantile community of Western India. Houses and Business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colourful with lovely traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the nights. Believing this day to be auspicious women purchase some gold or silver or at least one or two new utensils. "Lakshmi-Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. "Bhajans"-devotional
songs- in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and "Naivedya" of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess. There is a peculiar custom in Maharashtra to lightly pound dry coriander seeds with jaggery and offer as Naivedya.
In villages cattles are adorned and worshipped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In south cows are offered special veneration as they are supposed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and therefore they are adorned and worshipped on this day.
A very interesting story about this day is of the sixteen year old son of King Hima. As per his horoscope he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular fourth day of his marriage his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and lots of gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband's boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went on telling stories and singing songs. When Yam, the god of Death arrived there in the guise of a Serpent his eyes got blinded by that dazzle of those brilliant lights and he could not enter the Prince's chamber. So he climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the morning he quietly went away. Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of Continued on Pg 3

Indo-Canadian Voice Diwali | Saturday October 18, 2014 Continued From 2 death. Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of "YAMADEEPDAAN" and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of Death. The SECOND day is called NARKA-CHATURDASHI or CHOTI DIWAL which falls on the fourteenth day of the month of Ashwin. The story goes that the demon king Narakasur ruler of Pragjyotishpur ( a province to the South of Nepal) after defeating Lord Indra had snatched away the magnificent earrings of Aditi, the Mother Goddess and imprisoned sixteen thousand daughters of the gods and saints in his harem. On the day previous to Narakachaturdashi, Lord Krishna killed the demon and liberated the imprisoned damsels and also recovered those precious earrings of Aditi. As a symbol of that victory Lord Krishna smeared his forehead with the demon king's blood. Krishna returned home in the very early morning of the Narakachaturdashi day. The womenfolk massaged scented oil to his body and gave him a good bath to wash away the filth from his body. Since then the custom of taking bath before sunrise on this day has become a traditional practice specially in Maharashtra. In South India that victory of the divine over the mundane is celebrated in a very peculiar way. People wake up before sunrise prepare blood by mixing Kumkum in oil and after breaking a bitter fruit that rep-
resents the head of the demon King that was smashed by Krishna, apply that mixture on their foreheads. Then they have an oil bath using sandalwood paste. In Maharashtra also, traditional early baths with oil and "Uptan" (paste) of gram flour and fragrant powders are a `must'. All through the ritual of baths, deafening sounds of crackers and fireworks are there in order that the children enjoy bathing. Afterwards steamed vermiceli with milk and sugar or puffed rice with curd is served. Another legend is about King Bali of the nether world mighty power had become a threat to the gods. In order to curb his powers Lord Vishnu in the guise of a Batu Wamana small boy- visited him and begged him to give him only that much land which he could cover with his three steps. Known for his philanthropy King Bali proudly granted him his wish. That very moment that small boy transformed himself into the all-powerful Lord Vishnu. With his first step Lord Vishnu covered the entire heaven and with the second step the earth and asked Bali where to keep his third step. Bali offered his head. Putting his foot on his head Vishnu pushed him down to the underworld. At the same time for his generosity Lord Vishnu gave him the lamp of knowledge and allowed him to return to earth once a year to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. This Narakachaturdashi day therefore is dedicated to lights and prayers heralding a future full of joy and laughter.
The THIRD day of the festival of Diwali is the most important day of LAKSHMI-PUJA which is entirely devoted to the propitiation of Goddess Lakshmi. This day is also known by the name of "CHOPADA-PUJA". On this very day sun enters his second course and passes Libra which is represented by the balance or scale. Hence, this design of Libra is believed to have suggested the balancing of account books and their closing. Despite the fact that this day falls on an amavasya day it is regarded as the most auspicious.

The day of Lakshmi-Puja falls on the dark night of Amavasya. The strains of joyous sounds of bells and drums float from the temples as man is invoking Goddess Lakshmi in a wondrous holy "pouring-in" of his heart. All of a sudden that impenetrable darkness is pierced by innumerable rays of light for just a moment and the next moment a blaze of light descends down to earth from heaven as golden-footed DeepLakshmi alights on earth in all her celestial glory amidst chantings of Vedic hymns. A living luminance of Universal Motherhood envelopes the entire world in that blessed moment of fulfillment of a long-awaited dream of the mortal. A sublime light of knowledge dawns upon humanity and devotion of man finally conquers ignorance. This self enlightenment is expressed through the twinkling lamps that illuminate the palaces of the wealthy as well as the lowly abodes of the poor. It is believed that on this day Lakshmi walks through the green fields and loiters through the bye-lanes and

toms which characterises this festival of Diwali is the indulgence of gambling, specially on a large scale in North India. It is believed that goddess Parvati played dice with her husband, Lord Shiv on this day and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuring year. This tradition of playing cards- flush and rummy with stakes on this particular day continues even to-day.
One very interesting story about this Diwali day is from Kathopanishad of a small boy called Nichiketa who believed that Yam, the god of Death was as black as the dark night of amavasya. But when he met Yam in person he was puzzled seeing Yam's calm countenance and dignified stature. Yam explained to Nichiketa on this

As per Vishnu-Puran the people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honour of Lord Indira and worshipped him after the end of every monsoon season but one particular year the young Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to Lord Indra who in terrific anger sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. But Krishna saved his Gokul by lifting up the Govardhan mountain and holding it over the people as an umbrella.

The FIFTH and FINAL day of Diwali Festival is known by the name of "BHAYYADUJ" in the Hindi-speaking belt "BHAV-BIJ" in the Marathi-speaking communities and in Nepal by the name of "BHAI-TIKA". As the legend goes Yamraj, the God of Death visited his sister Yami on this particular day. She put the auspicious tilak on his forehead, garlanded him and led him with special dishes and both of them together ate the sweets, talked and enjoyed themselves to their heart's content, while parting Yamraj gave her a special gift as a token of his love and in return Yami also gave him a lovely gift which she had made with her own hands. That day Yamraj announced that anyone who receives tilak from his sister will never be thrown. That is why this day of Bhayyaduj is also known by the name of "YAMA-DWITIYA" Since then this day is being observed as a symbol of love between sisters and brothers. It became also imperative for the brother to go to his sister's house to celebrate Bhayyaduj. In today's world when pressing everyday problems are teaming as under all the tender words of personal relationships, the celebrating of this day has its own importance in continuing to maintain the love between brothers and sisters for it is the day of food-sharing, gift-giving and reaching out to the inner most depths of the hearts. It is a personal, people-oriented festival when enmities are forgotten, families and friends meet, enjoy and establish a word of closeness.

Diwali is a Festival of Gifts
Diwali, the festival of lights, is also the festival of gifts. One of the most celebrated occasions in India, Diwali is associated with fortune and prosperity, and hence, it is the biggest gift giving and shopping festival in India. Giving Gifts on Diwali is an excellent way to strengthen relationships with your near and dear ones. A present on this occasion reflects the warm feelings of the gift-giver and also the spirit of the festival.
The popular tradition of exchanging gifts on Diwali is an age-old custom tied in with the festival and has probably started with the inception of Diwali itself. In olden days, the simple rural people of India whose occupation mostly consist-
the gift that one is presented with not only on Diwali, but also on other occasions. However, this wonderful tradition is not wholly a materialistic one and for a large section of Indian people, gift-giving still stands as a way of conveying love, respect, thankfulness, appreciation and a sense of belonging.

mattered more than the gifts themselves. With time however, the tradition got more and more complicated and gift-giving is not so simple as it used to be earlier. Today a lot of importance is given today to the quality of
Diwali being the festival of lights, beautifully painted Diyas (earthen lamps) of exquisite designs are indispensable for the occasion. They also stand as a symbol of fortune and are believed to usher in prosperity to individual homes. Present your loved ones with a set of diyas on Diwali. They will love it for sure! This is the common but still highly popular gift of Diwali.
Greeting Cards are a highly popular gift for all occasions. In India they are increasingly getting popular and used as a secondary present that accompanies the main gift item. Whatever your present is, you would do well to send along a cool Greeting Card with your Diwali gift. Greeting Cards can be gifted to any person of any age; put in a nice message to your card expressing good wishes for the recipent and make this Diwali a memorable time for both of you. One more traditional gift idea for Diwali is handing over silver items. Available in a wide range and exquisite designs, silver items are a great hit for Diwali and a favourite for aged people. The festival being a reli-
gious occasion, religious gift items made of silver like silver coins with images of idols as Lakshmi and Ganesh, puja thalis, small silver showpieces and crockery items like silver tea sets and utensils are quite popular as Diwali Gifts. They also reflect your wishes and prayers for the health and fortune of the recipent and his/her family. In case you wish to present a whole lot of gift items, Diwali Gift Hampers is the perfect idea to do so. You may make your own or go in for ready made Diwali Gift Hampers which are readily available in the market these days. Keep in mind the taste of your recipent(s) and your budget before you choose the gift hamper.

Festival of Lights: Message behind the celebration
BY DR. SARWAN SINGH RANDHAWA
Community Librarian
Muriel Arnason Library, FVRL
THE original form of Diwali is Deepawali, which literally means "rows of lighted lamps" and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights. It has been celebrated for ages and grows in attraction by the year. Everyone enjoys the goodies, the shine, glamour, and the endless enthusiasm for living that suddenly grips people around this time. But there is much more to Diwali than feasting and merrymaking. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. Dipawali is essentially a festival for householders. The preparations, the rituals, the entire celebration focuses
on the home and family, spanning out to cover the community as a natural extension. This is an occasion for everyone, irrespective of age, colour, caste and religion. Diwali is held in memory of mythological and historical stories, which say that the evil demons were slain by many God incarnations. As on this day Lord Rama returned to his kingdom after fourteen years of exile. People rejoice because Lord Rama had conquered Ravana, a cruel king. He had conquered evil, and good had triumphed. Among the Sikhs, Diwali came to have a special significance on the return to its sixth master, Guru Hargobind who had been captive in the fort of Gwalior under the orders
of Mughal emperor Jahangir. Guru ji also got 52 Hindu rajas (small kings) released from the prison of the king. The celebration of this festival has a deep meaning. It comes on the darkest night of the year. In Hindu philosophy darkness is compared to ignorance and lighting the lamp has significance of losing ignorance and gaining knowledge. The lighting of Deevas in every house brings brightness and joy and hope of finding light in darkness, achieving knowledge where there is ignorance, and spreading love where there is hatred. Illuminating the house with colourful lights means that the mind should be decorated with spiritual accessories such as peach, love, tolerance, generosity, etc. A bath in starlight before sunrise is accepted as purifying soul and body. Such cleaning and focus on newness are symbolic of the casting off of the last year's sins and hope for a fresh new year. It is most important and colorful of the Indian festivals that has both the traditions of Thanksgiving and
day, the businessmen close their books of old accounts and start new ones that denotes the giving up of bad habits and cultivating new attitudes.
Christmas. We give thanks to God and share good will with fellow human beings. The event signifies renewal of life, of "light over darkness", and working toward inner enlightenment. On the day of Diwali, people
go house to house to exchange gifts and sweets. By exchanging gifts and sweets, people are advised to forget old grudges and wipe the slate clean, and have good wishes and pure feelings for others. On this
Thus, it is a celebration of joy, brightness and happiness, and is associated with victory of good on evil, sharing, caring, forgiving, and loving sentiments. From darkness we enter into light, and light empowers us to do good deeds and bring us closer to divinity. It gives us the message that no matter how dark the times, we shall keep the light of our minds turned on and with a conscious mind, we shall try to find a way out. A strong will power improves life, and success in some aim boosts one's confidence and opens up doors to new and higher goals. It promotes social and practical purposes of sharing, caring, forgiving, and loving sentiments. This gives a message to fight with social evils as we have so many like drugs, prejudice, violence etc. Let us hope to fight these underlying demons with illumination of our inner lights.

Why is Diwali Important To Sikhs?
The Third Sikh Teacher, Guru Amar Das institutionalized this as one of the special days when all Sikhs would gather to receive the Gurus blessings at Goindwal. In 1577 the foundation stone of The Golden Temple was laid on Diwali. The Diwali festival took place during the life of the sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind Sahib. The Muslim Emperor Jahengir, imprisoned the Guru and 52 Kings. The Emperor ruled India at this time. The Asian Indians begged the Emperor to release the
How to Celebrate Bandi Chhorh Diwas / Diwali
Guru Hargobind Ji was released in 1619 AD from the Gwalior fort and He also helped other 52 rajas to be freed from the life imprisonment. The celebrations were held when he arrived at Amritsar. Question is that why do we celebrate the day many hundred years after ? Do we understand ? Probably NOT. An attempt has been made to answer the above questions as follows : Purpose of the Celebrations is to remember Guru Ji and pray for one's own release from the imprisonment like 52 rajas. One might think that he/she is not in prison and is free to do whatever ... One might be wrong here. Most people are constantly being forced into the PRISON of pride, rat race, show off, peer pressure and one may go to the extent of turning morals against what Gurus have laid down (smoking, using intoxicants, adultery, removing hair and so on .....). Most of us are prisoners of the culture & society. Objective of the celebration is to pray for our liberation from the worldly bonds and act upon Guru's path of truthfulness to avail human life time (i.e. to be one with Waheguru / Lord). Rather than lighting a deeva of clay, oil & wick, one should light the mind with the divine knowledge contained in Gurbani. Therefore, lighting a deeva in true sense is acquiring Divine knowledge & virtues (being kind, humble, meek, tolerant, selfless, sweet spoken .....) that leads one to become one with Waheguru / God.
Guru and the Emperor agreed but the Gurus said also release the kings. Guru ji had a gown made with 52 string pieces for the Hindus to hold. The Guru and the Hindu kings were also freed at Diwali, Sikhs were very happy when their leader was released. Guru Hargobind Sahib went to the Golden Temple Amritsar in the Punjab. Sikh Diwali is recalled throughout India and in many countries; each year to remember Guru ji's release. At Diwali we worship the religious freedom for Sikhs and
this is why Diwali is called the Light Festival. As Guru's Mother was full of happiness that her son was released she ordered food and sweets and gave them to everyone. The worshippers float multi-coloured light candles on the water at the Golden Temple. The gurdwara, hold a grand fireworks display.

Lakshmi Puja is an important ritual during Diwali or Deepavali. There were numerous queries on how to do Lakshmi Puja at home. There is no straightforward answer to this question as the ritual varies from region to region. But here is a simple guide to perform Lakshmi Puja during Diwali. In 2012, Diwali Lakshmi Puja is on November 13.
Diwali Puja
• Now offer garlands made of marigolds or leaves of bel tree, sandalwood paste, kumkum and other daily puja items including lighting incense and agarbhatis. • Now make offerings of coconut, fruits, sweets, betel nuts and betel leaves. • Next make offerings of Batasha sweets, puffed rice, coriander and cumin seeds.
First and foremost step is to clean the house. Through the puja we are inviting Goddess Lakshmi to our house and she likes everything to be neat and clean. In some communities, even the broom is worshipped on the Lakshmi Puja day. This symbolically represents the need for cleanliness. Three forms of Shakti – Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswathi and Goddess Durga –Lord Ganesh and Lord Kubera are worshipped on the day. No puja is performed without paying customary tributes to Lord Ganesha. Lord Kubera, represents wealth, and he is the treasurer of Gods. In homes, usually the locker or safe in which gold and cash is kept symbolically represents the seat of Kubera. Important Items Needed For Lakshmi Puja Kalash Mango leaves Idol or picture of Goddess Lakshmi Milk, curd, honey, ghee Puffed rice Usual puja Sweets Coriander seeds Cumin seeds And other daily puja items
• Lastly, perform a silent Arati for Goddess Lakshmi. And meditate on Goddess Lakshmi.
• Now sprinkle the flowers and rice on the idol of Goddess Lakshmi.
then with milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. Then clean the idol again with water.
• Take out the idol of Goddess Lakshmi and place it on a Thaali. Clean the idol with water,
• Place the idol back on the Kalash.
• Take some of the ‘prasad’ (that will stay for long period of time) and place it at the place where ornaments and cash is usually kept. Business people also worship the account books on this day along with Goddess Lakshmi. This is only a guideline. You can show flexibility in the puja process. Some of the items needed might not be readily available. But you can keep the house and surrounding clean. Finally, if you can’t perform the puja, wherever you are simply mediate on Goddess Lakshmi.

Tips For A Safe Diwali Following are some tips, the do's and don'ts, for a safe Diwali
- Be prepared for emergency
The Do's :
- Organize a community display of fireworks rather than individuals handling crackers
- Before bursting fire crackers, look for an open space and ensure there are no combustible and inflammatory things around. If so remove them at once
- Keep first aid and buckets of water handy. In the event of fire, extinguish flame by pouring water from the buckets. Every major fire is small when it starts
- Always buy fire works from licensed and reliable sellers
- Light only one firework at a time, by one person. Others should watch from a safe distance
- Keep small children away from the bursting area - Use a sparkler, agarbatti (incense stick) or a long fire wood to light a cracker as they keep you at a safe distance and do not possess a naked flame - Read the label on the crackers and follow the instructions carefully - While igniting aerial fire works like rockets ensure that they are not facing any opening like an open window, door or an open building which may cause fire accidents - Keep fireworks stock away while lighting a particular firework - Wear footwear while lighting fireworks - Keep a bucket full of water handy
(like rockets) if there is any overhead obstruction present like trees and wires
it down and ignite it
pocket while igniting another
- Don't keep your face close to the cracker while trying to light it
- Never try to light used fireworks
- Never ever leave a lit match, agarbatti (incense stick) or sparkler near unused crackers
- Do not throw fire works at people
- Do not ignite fireworks in any container - Do not tamper with misfired fireworks - Do not wear loose, hanging clothes. Secure all clothes properly - Do not apply any cream or ointment or oil on burnt area.
- In case of burns, pour large quantity of water on the affected area
Fireworks Restrictions Vancouver, Surrey & Delta
To buy fireworks in Vancouver, you have to be over 19 year old and you have to fill out a form for a permit to light them, which you can only do on private property.
- In case of major burns, after extinguishing the fire, remove all smouldering clothes. Wrap the victim in a clean bed sheet - The patient should be taken to a burns specialist or a major hospital.Don't panic
The City of Vancouver has said it is looking at looking at expanding the list of days on which fireworks are permitted. Right now, they can only be lit on Halloween but the city is considering allowing fireworks to celebrate Chinese New Year, New Year's Eve, Vaisahki and Diwali.
- In case of eye burns, wash the eye with tap water for 10 minutes and take the victim to a hospital The Don'ts: - Do not wear nylon clothes. Prefer cottons while bursting crackers - Strictly avoid using matches and lighters for bursting crackers as they have open flames that can be dangerous - Never ignite aerial fireworks
In
- Never experiment with crackers or make your own fire works
- Never give any firework item to small children
- Avoid bursting fire works on roads
- Never try to burst crackers indoors or from inside a vehicle
- Never ever light a cracker in your hand. See to it that you put
• Do not have fire works in your
You can't buy fireworks in Surrey, Richmond or the city of North Vancouver, for example, but fireworks are still allowed in West Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver, Port Moody, Burnaby and Vancouver.

Customs of Diwali Many interesting rituals and traditions have been attached to the celebrations of Diwali. It is a five-day long festival, which is celebrated with fun and fervor. The blissful festival calls for the exchange of gifts, sweets and heartfelt wishes. Fire crackers are burst and people enjoy wearing new clothes, on the auspicious day. Although the way of merrymaking is different and the customs are different, the feel among the people across the length and breadth of the country remains the same - to spread good cheer. It is the time to celebrate brotherhood. In the following lines, we have provided complete information on the customs of Diwali.

In the temples of Mathura and Nathadwara, the deities are bathed with milk and adorned with precious clothes and ornaments. Then offerings of a large variety of delicacies are made to them.
Third Day of Diwali
Rituals of Dipavali First Day of Diwali The first day of Diwali is known as 'Dhanteras'. People renovate, decorate their houses and workplaces on this day and make traditional 'Rangoli' motifs on the entrance, to welcome Goddess
'Ubtan' (scrub made up of gram flour and fragrant powders). Bengalis believe that Goddess Kali killed the demon Raktavija on this day. A general customs followed during the second day of Diwali is to burst crackers. People illuminate their homes with diya, as to welcome the set the mood for celebrations in the following day.

The third day is the main day of the Diwali festival. Jains have their own religious significance of the day, because they believe that Lord Mahavir attained 'Nirvana' (or Eternal Bliss) on the day. Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the great saint who gave rise to Hindu Renaissance, also left the mortal world on this day. On this day, people wear new clothes and share gifts and sweets with their friends and relatives. Women prepare delicacies and whole house is illuminated with 'diyas' and candles.
