few years ago, You Were Always On My Mind by The Pet Shop Boys was voted the best ever cover; it is excellent. I find the Elvis Presley version slow mournful and rather boring. Back in the sixties, blues singer Joe Cocker took the Beatles jaunty pop song With A Little Help From My Friends and

In 1994 American rockers Nine Inch Nails (aka NiN) wrote a song called hurt. The song was covered brilliantly by Johnny Cash in 2002. Cash sang it in a lower voice than the original and with lines like Everyone I know Goes Away In The End made it a tear jerking classic. Adele had a big hit with Make You Feel My Love. However, did you know that the original was written and performed by Bob Dylan? I think it's fair to say that Dylan wrote many songs that bands did better, including a favourite of mine, Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds. David Bowie wrote The Man Who Sold the World in the early 1970s. Then in the 1990s Nirvana brought this great song to a whole new audience. The theme from The Bodyguard (I Will Always Love

preferred Whitney's version to her own. In 2006 The Zutons had a hit with Valerie. A few years later Amy Winehouse took the song to a new level. Finally, with some songs I like both the original and cover just as much. In 1983 Tears For Fears had a big hit with Mad World. American Singer Gary Jules then slowed it right down for the film Donnie Darko. The song took the Number One spot in Christmas 2003. MusicMan

Local History Swimming I was taught to swim at Hanley Baths in the 1960s. We were ferried every week to the venue on the school bus. Non-swimmers would be given a hand held float made from polystyrene. Swimming with two hands on the float wasn't difficult and so the instructors would encourage us to take one hand off before eventually moving on to the long pole. The teachers would walk poolside with its end in the water for us to grab. Meanwhile the potential swimmer would frantically splash around in doggy paddle fashion. The system did work and most of us went on to acquire the coveted length certificate.

The open air pool at Trentham Gardens was built in the 1920s in the Art Deco style and had a seating capacity for one thousand people. Sadly the pool closed in the mid-1970s. I remember the pool being

What is Mindfulness?

indfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn’t more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.

My Best Ever Birthday Growing up my mum would always give me a good birthday. Like many small boys I could be naughty but everything was always forgiven on my special day. I would have a party at home with my friends, having sandwiches and jelly and of course a birthday cake. Party games were a must. Favourites of mine were Pass the Parcel and Musical Chairs. As I grew older fewer people would come to my parties and my friends said the same. Two of my best pals, brothers Steven and Melvin were offered an alternative. For Steven's birthday one year, rather than a party his mum said he could have a pound. Split three ways that was 33p

about my best ever birthday, which has to be my eighteenth. People always say that you never forget your first love and at the time, mine was a girl called Sue. She had previously dated a mate, when they finished we had two splendid years together. We had been a couple for around a year when we both decided that it would be a good idea to organise a party as I would soon be eighteen. We knew of a pub in Hanley called The Woodman. They had a room upstairs that could be hired out. On the day we did our own catering and I remember a trip to the local supermarket to buy a large chicken costing £1.00 that we used to make sandwiches. We had a good turnout and thankfully no one sang Happy Birthday or gave me the bumps! The date was 14th December 1974. It was a Saturday and a

Cockerell and his team were the first to develop the use of an annular ring to maintain the air cushion. They were also the first to devise the successful skirt and demonstrate a practical example of this technology.

8. Television was first demonstrated by Scottish inventor John Logie Baird in 1925. However Baird's system would ultimately prove to be an impractical dead-end. The designs of American inventor Philo Taylor Farnsworth and the Marconi Company were vastly superior to Baird's system in every way and when developed became the analogue TV system we all remember. 9. Knitted bees found at spots across Staffordshire, and this is why They have a special meaning

The bees have been spotted all over Staffordshire (Image: Staffordshire Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Champions) Knitted bees have been found left at venues across Staffordshire as part of a campaign to spread awareness of mental health issues The project has been organised by Staffordshire Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Champions, which is part of the #talksuicide campaign in the county that is part of the wider Suicide Prevention Partnership. It sees the knitted bees placed at locations, including nature reserves and even rail stations. Sophie Henaughan, operations manager at Brighter Futures group with deals with homelessness and mental health, commented on the importance of the bees, as she said, ‘The subtle approach that you get from the bees most importantly provides a conversation starter which is, of course, the most important thing.’ The Suicide Prevention Partnership is a combination of Staffordshire County Council and Stoke-onTrent City Council, which together have commissioned Brighter Futures to deliver the community initiative.

So far, more than 300 knitted bees have been scattered across Staffordshire, with the hope the initiative will continue well into the New Year for people to find. Sophie said: ‘It was an idea that popped into my head and came about to try and spread awareness but also to encourage people and families to get outside because the benefits of getting out into nature are huge. ‘We've had a lot of elderly people that have crocheted and knitted these bees who are either clinically vulnerable or safely isolating and it's really given them a boost to their own wellbeing.’ The project began in April with a one-year guarantee of funding from the Together for Health organisation and has proved worthwhile having helped numerous people across the county. Over the last four months in particular, the mental health organisation has seen an increase in people asking for support, directly helping more 30 people who have been experiencing suicidal thoughts. ‘I don't want this project to be corporate or clinical, it's about stripping it back and saying it's okay to have conversations and approach people who may be struggling with their mental health.’ ‘So we have stripped things back, made them simple and are using our platform through our Facebook page and community champions as avenues for people to start a conversation which they may never have done before.’ She said more needed to be done to support people who have lost a loved one to suicide. ‘That is a really big area that I've wanted to focus on because there isn't a great deal of support for people that are bereaved by suicide.’ ‘The Covid pandemic also hasn't helped people at all with their mental health or grief process with the ongoing uncertainties of potential new lockdowns, so I think it's massively important that these resources are always available to people.’ As the mental health awareness bees spreading a positive message to people across Staffordshire, Mrs. Henaughan said she had been, ‘blown-away really with how many people have contacted me as a result of finding one of the bees.’ ‘We had someone find a bee at their local train station and tell me that it really put a smile on their face to someone who is going through divorce at the moment saying how much it's helped them.’ ‘Kids are also finding them so it's opening their minds to the issues that people have so hopefully in the future suicide isn't a word to be afraid of.’ If you need help CALM (0800 58 58 58) thecalmzone.net has a helpline for men who are down and who need to talk or find information and support.
