Being a brand built out of a need for diversity in the publication industry, this issue’s name is not just a phrase, it is a way of living. This uncertain moment in history has allowed for a wider spread of awareness and discussion of injustices that have been lying under the surface for a long time. We spoke to influential female activists, Anya Dillard, Aria Sa’id, Tanzeela and Sushmita, about a few (out of the many) inequalities of our society, and how they levelled up on their activism to bring about change in a lost society. We explored the effects of social media and whether the increased level of political activity, from otherwise silent viewers, made a significant change outside of the home. Did it? And finally, with all speak of Y2K comebacks and levelling up, we introduce to you our Cover Star, Cassie Ventura. Voir caught up with Me & U hit single star on all things old, new, and upcoming; reflecting on her time in the industry as a young independent woman and how she grew stronger, wiser, and better with every situation as, “there has never been a dark moment in my life that didn’t allow some light in.” If this era has taught us anything, it is that we are always exploring, learning, and growing to be a better person for no one but ourselves. We have been given the opportunity to pause, rewind, reflect and look forward to the beginning of a better future. And although there is still a lot to learn and accomplish, there is no greater moment than the present to start. It’s time to Level Up. xx

Cut outs in dresses, tops and trousers have trickled into the Fall runway from Spring/Summer. It’s clear we’re keeping this trend going and we’re not against it! Rather than the summer’s subtle cut outs, the next season is taking a stronger approach with bold large cut outs in the form of Leather belt straps seen in Dion Lee and detachable sleeve accessories from Jacquemus. You can make this as casual, sporty, or smart as you like – we have all the options here! 36
Relaxed or fitted – Fall 2021 has it all. A tailored look can set you up for a productive day at work or home – whether it’s cosy and casual like Phillip Lim or sharp tailored sets like Givenchy. This Fall we’ve been spoilt for choice with a mix of colours, patterns, and materials, from Herringbone and Check to simple bold onetone pieces from Jacquemus. Here are a few pieces that can give you inspiration for your perfect suit day. 38

Cassie
Photographer: Dametreus Ward. Stylist: Wilford Lenov. Hair stylist: @tigerbahmb. Make-up artist: Esther Foster.
Words by VERONICA WONG DIFFA
Strong, Independent, Self-Empowered. Cassie, the triple threat Y2K phenomenon, is just getting started. Although being under the radar for the last couple of years, she has not been silent in the slightest. With 2 beautiful daughters in hand and copious projects making headway, Cassie shows that we can do it all and, by no means, has she gone away. With a lifetime of experience under her sleeve, Cassie speaks to Voir about her time in the music industry as a young woman and her journey into selfdevelopment and self-love; and with full transparency, independent and courageous Cassie admits she still has a lot to learn and “always will be on [her] journey [of] learning”. Cassie’s breakthrough to fame began with her first hit single ‘Me & U’ debuted in 2006. This hit record, charting the Billboard Hot 100 at number three for four consecutive weeks, turned heads, putting her in the public eye for the first time as a singer. But her career didn’t begin there, Cassie stepped into the creative industry with her modelling career as early as 12 years old, modelling for local print work, at home in Connecticut. It was clear that her passions were strong, and from this, she spent her High School summers in NY, securing herself with Wilhelmina Models. “I remember working my butt off in High School. I spent 50% of [my] time at school and the other 50% working - maybe even 40/60. I saved my money well throughout my time modelling while in High School, [and] deferred from college… [to] move to NYC to model full time. Considering all of that, just a year and a half later, [I became] an artist signed to a major label. I went from modelling for Target to being in rehearsals every day. I also remember being told by my modelling agency around that same time, that if I lost ‘x’ amount of weight, I would book more jobs.

“WHEN YOU’RE GENUINELY RESPECTED BY THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU, THE LIKELIHOOD OF THEM BEING LOYAL TO YOU IS GREATER.”
So, at that point, I chose to become an artist.” Being the fast-paced industry that the creative community is and being at the young age of 19, Cassie reflects on the blur that was the 2000s, juggling modelling, music and acting. “When I think of the Y2K/Me & U version of myself, I was a baby. [At] 19… you’re young and figuring yourself out. You’re out in the world for the first time learning the basics of taking care of yourself, at least that’s where I was at 19. It all happened really quickly. I took every moment exactly for what it was. Nothing more, nothing less. I enjoyed myself so I never felt all over the place when it came to work [and] I was very focused on every project that I took on.” Of all artists Cassie has had the pleasure of working with, from Jay Z in his Single ‘Roc Boys’ to featuring Lil Wayne in ‘Official Girl’, her favourite collaborations were with Pharrell and Chad Hugo, as she was a genuine fan of N.E.R.D. “[When] I bought my first car, I would blast ‘In Search Of…’ everywhere I drove. I met Pharrell in 2007 and ended up working with himself & Chad. It is one of my favourite sessions to date.” However, with all the excitement of a thriving new career, came many lessons to learn and situations to experience. Cassie shared her experiences of career hardships and how this provoked selfdevelopment, changing her outlook on life - “Something small I wish I was better at then, that I know now, is paying closer attention to people that are brought in (AND) out of your life. When my success started to flourish, I was very green and even though I was safe, my ‘now’ self would tell my ‘then’ self that you’re too comfortable

“...IT MADE ME THE WOMAN I AM TODAY. I WOULD DEFINITELY SAY THAT I’VE TRANSFORMED.” with strangers. There are so many people that don’t genuinely care about your well-being and just want [to] benefit [from] the fruits of your labour.” As Cassie so clearly puts it, “Keep your family/team whomever that you feel deserves to stay close to you – [close], and then close that circle of trust” – a lesson that Cassie is still learning to navigate today. “When you’re genuinely respected by the people around you, the likelihood of them being loyal to you is greater.” Looking back at the experiences faced, both positive and negative, Cassie has truly transformed her way of living and working, and “without sounding corny, it made me the woman I am today. I would definitely say that I’ve transformed” as a woman. A strong and exemplary advocate for feminism – in all meaning of the word – Cassie takes great pride in supporting others in finding strength within themselves, through sharing her own stories in seeking self-love and acceptance; something that she struggled with in her younger years amid her soaring career. “My biggest interest has everything to do with women. The way we love, the way we heal, the way we take care of ourselves - specifically our bodies internally. Then follow that by the way we speak to each other about our present [and] past lives, and how we support each other.”
53
“I’M EVOLVING DAILY… [AND] I HAVE TO REMIND MYSELF [THAT SOMETIMES] I NEED TO TAKE A STEP BACK AND THANK THE UNIVERSE FOR MY BLESSINGS.”
Now with two young daughters, Cassie hopes to empower them as much as her mother did for her, “Motherhood has been without a doubt, THE most challenging, but THE most humbling and enlightening experience of my life. I adore my mom and the fact that she worked while we were growing up. She was a shining example of an independent, strong, and hardworking woman. [Being] blessed with two girls… gives me a chance to… help them be the best versions of themselves. Strong women. Great women. I can share my stories with them (within reason)! Although I would never want them to experience any of the negative things that I went through, I believe that storytelling is powerful. They will make their own decisions and mistakes, but I always want them to know who they are and that they are supported.” Through her undying and charismatic support for her daughters, Cassie has become a better person for herself, taking the time to care for her needs as much as anyone else’s, making her stronger and more secure than ever before - “There has never been a dark moment in my life that didn’t allow some light in. When I create time for meditation or pause in my day, it changes everything. Lately, my focus has been on gratitude. I’m evolving daily… [and] I have to remind myself [that sometimes] I need to take a step back and thank the universe for my blessings.” As a piece of advice from Cassie to you, “Practice learning to fall in love with yourself. Taking in who you really are at the core helps you stop the comparisons with what you see on social media or even comparing you ‘now’ to who you used to be. We were never designed to stay the same.” The more you understand yourself, the more confident you will be in yourself. This advice was so perfectly

“I JUST LOVE BEING CASSIE!”
“I’VE LEARNED THAT… DESPITE HOW MANY PEOPLE YOU CAN BE INSPIRED BY, THERE REALLY IS ONLY ONE YOU.” evidenced upon asking if Cassie had any icons she admired; alongside Prince, Cher, Janet Jackson and Gwen Stefani, she adds, “I just love being Cassie!... I’ve learned that… despite how many people you can be inspired by, there really is only one you.” Cassie is her own Superwoman. After deciding to remove herself from the physical music industry, and having spent time working on falling in love with herself, her husband and her family, Cassie is now ready to show us what she has mysteriously been working on in the background – “I’ve been very careful about how I speak of what I’m preparing to do, but yes I’m journaling a lot and I do still enjoy [writing music]… a lot. Music holds a different weight and meaning for me now. I worked very hard to get [to] where I am in life today, [and] it took almost a year to get out of my label deal and start my own indie label. [During her first pregnancy] … I removed myself from the industry for a bit, [but] I also felt the same commitment to maintain some sort of creative stability in my life, so I kept making music. Fast forward to now with 2 babies, there is so much joy in my heart and I can’t wait to share it through my music again very soon.” Needless to say, we’re ready for you, Cassie.

The Black Lives Matter movement can be considered all of these, but most importantly it represents a turning point in society. A movement that sparked a global network of activism, solidarity, and change, resulting from tragic events that acted as an international wake-up call. #BLACKLIVESMATTER can be traced back to 2013, following the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin in Florida. The hashtag that started on Facebook has since then become a banner that unites millions of individuals fighting for the same cause - trying to stop the murders, violence, and injustice against the black community. However, still in 2021, the names associated with Black Lives Matter continue to be the ones of its victims, and not of its members. This once again highlights the discrepancy of a system that fails to both recognise racism and hold perpetrators of racist crimes accountable. Over the past year, the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many more, have led to the amplification of the movement. A sort of upsurge following the waves of international outrage that were expressed through diverse types of activism; media campaigns, demonstrations and protests, letter writing and petitions. The escalation of these events over the past year has resulted in an almost immediate response from the public.

A public that despite, or because of, the Covid-19 pandemic and its lockdowns turned to social media for solidarity and a call-to-action. One of the vocal members behind this movement was Anya Dillard, a political activist and the founder of The Next Gen Come Up. Anya Dillard is an 18-year-old activist best known for her impactful speeches on injustice. When asked about the motivation behind it all, Anya explained to us that it all lies in her goal to help and inspire others. “My goal has always been to inspire other young people to break barriers in their own respective career paths, stand up against hatred of all forms, and give back to, as well as advocate, for people who need resources and representation.” But her contribution to social movements doesn’t end there, the young activist is also the founder of The Next Gen Come Up - a non-profit organisation that encourages the youth to do something more, to not only passively learn about injustice but become an active part of activism and a catalyst for change. “My organisation, The Next Gen Come Up, was founded with these same goals in mind and strives to change the world through uniting like-minded young people, community organising, executing service projects, sharing thought-provoking works of art, and celebrating intersectionality and allyship all year round.”
changing the ‘changemaker community’ demographic, especially with the increasing use of social media.
This doesn’t come as a surprise to us, every social movement has been characterised by the technology of its time, shaping its aims, means of action and even participation. In this case, we cannot deny, nor ignore, the positive impact that social media has had on the Black Lives Matter movement - after all, it acted as one of our primary sources of information when it came to the

discovery of many of the tragic events. Social media activism was a key tool for many, used to either share infographics to raise awareness or spread petitions to raise funds or support, amongst other things. The growth of social media has allowed the general narrative around activism to expand and detach itself from the often censored and politically biased mainstream media. As Anya explains, “In the mainstream media, activism appeared to be something that only adults, celebrities, and politicians would speak on. However, as time progressed and social media became more and more integral to society, young people suddenly gained access to the ability to build their own platforms, connect with one another, and share information on a global scale. This allowed for the breaking of echo chambers, merging various communities, a distribution of knowledge, and a newfound awareness of unshared experiences, which ultimately encouraged the youth to learn, from each other, what they may not have learned from their parents.” Nonetheless, we cannot exaggerate its positive role, we cannot really say that social media activism was any solution, or even “a solution”. With it also came fake news, misinformation, and the presentation of a serious social movement, vanishing amongst Instagram likes and stories. Which makes us question whether what we’ve been witnessing has been constructive social media activism or just ‘slacktivism’?
‘SLACKTIVISM’? We may not have a clear answer to this yet, but according to Anya, the answer lies somewhere in the middle. “While the real-world and virtual participation of the youth is extraordinary, young people can always be doing more outside of the social media sphere to get involved in social movements.

“AS TIME PROGRESSED AND SOCIAL MEDIA BECAME MORE AND MORE INTEGRAL TO SOCIETY, YOUNG PEOPLE SUDDENLY GAINED TO HOW COVID CHANGEDACCESS THE BEAUTY THEBOOM ABILITY TO BUILD - AN INSIGHT INTO THEIR 2020’S BEAUTY INDUSTRY WITH EMMA CHIU OWN PLATFORMS...” ‘Unprecedented times’ is the slogan of the decade that we are all growing to hate. However, there is no denying that the stark impact COVID has had on many businesses will direct business development strategies for the next several years. Before 2020, the beauty industry was booming at an astronomical rate, worth just over $530 billion worldwide*. A sign of the times, beauty grew in the ever-evolving social media climate with an increasing availability to know about the latest products and trends quicker than ever before, as well a growing consumer base that is more educated to beauty products in comparison to earlier decades. Trade secrets, such as strobing and contouring which were kept backstage, or at a $30 rate in a book by Kevyn Aucoin, are now available at our fingertips, willing us to endlessly buy more and explore more beauty. However, during the pandemic, many of us have witnessed a particular shift
“SOCIAL MEDIA ALONE WILL NOT SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS. IT IS SIMPLY A MEANINGFUL RESOURCE.” Today, social media allows anyone to spread awareness and create a community around social change. With that being said, I always emphasize that social media alone will not solve our problems. It is simply a meaningful resource.” There are a lot of things that we can learn from Anya Dillard and her role in activism, but this is something that many of us need to be reminded of more often.

With the coverage of racism and police brutality came coverage of the attacks - a light was cast on the brutal prejudice and violence against the trans community, sparking TransLivesMatter and BlackTransLivesMatter movements in America and the UK. A mix of outrage at injustice, and reflections on identity, have bred a glimmer of hope at a less heteronormative, more accepting world we’re stepping into. Aria Sa’id is one of the vital changemakers of the world at this moment. Co-founder and President of the world’s first Transgender District, and former appointed LGBT Policy Advisor to the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, among other mighty titles; there is no person better to talk to about the present and future of queernormativity and LGBTQ+ activism. As a transgender woman of colour, Sa’id’s current advocacy and activism branches from her own experience. “I transitioned as a teenager at a time when transgender people weren’t visible at all, and I literally had to fight and self-advocate to be treated fairly and educate the world around me on my experience. From there, I started working with projects like Habitat for Humanity and eventually, after being in survival sex work and being homeless in San Francisco, started working specifically in transgender advocacy work.” 15 years on, she’s at the forefront of trans and sex workers’ rights projects, actively creating better communities. I think there’s been a growth of anti-racism dialogue and content on social media, and it helps in so many ways. But then there are moments that are purely rooted in social pressures and performance.” Of course, as social media does best, seeking approval and validation always becomes an issue, this time in the form of virtue signalling and blind performativity, in a battle of moral high grounds and black square posts. “No one wanted to look like ‘the racist’ on the ‘gram. But I think it’s changing and shifting. It’s one of those things that you hope just helps even with the performativity that exists. But we’ve seen how social media has also created a world that is leaning towards inclusion - I believe inclusion is truly a byproduct of activism and social media. We see more representation in the media, more regard for black trans voices on the internet, and a growing understanding on racial and gender justice in the western world. The pandemic has asked each of us to challenge the world as we knew it, which is why we saw such an outpouring of love and solidarity from people who otherwise wouldn’t support our fight for liberation in the United States, and globally. I think people have learned something about themselves during quarantine that they otherwise wouldn’t have challenged or investigated.
This year, I am more confident that there can be a black trans woman president of the United States than I was last year, and I think that’s a beautiful dream to hold… I hope we get to see the fruit of our labor and our ongoing fight for equality manifested in ways in which transgender people, especially transgender people of color, are socially and economically empowered.”

R U T L U C E P A R G IN T ERADICA ,
When Sarah walked back from a friend’s house that night, she took the precautions we’ve always been told to when we feel threatened: she stuck to main roads, wore bright colours, and called her boyfriend, but that wasn’t enough. These details of the case, Sarah’s precautions, and their fruitless rendering, sparked a new outrage, a redirected conversation about rape and women’s safety, and a message became clear - we were done resisting when we shouldn’t be attacked in the first place. Around the time of the event, The Guardian posted an unbelievable statistic that unfortunately felt pretty believable to women - 97% of young women in the UK have been sexually assaulted. Organizations, activist pages and women - nation and worldwide - took to the internet sharing theirs and others’ stories surrounding sexual assault and rape culture, bringing to light the accountability of schools, businesses and individuals, and the clear and dire need for change, to eradicate rape culture. One activist page involved in the discussion was Fuck__Patriarchy, run by Tanzeela and Sushmita who were inspired during the pandemic to do something about the misogyny that surrounded them. “We’re two young Indian women…we grew up together in an oppressive culture that barely recognized our independent identities. During the pandemic, we finally had enough time on our hands to reshape our anger, internal strength, patience and passion into meaningful education and activism. Image: @Karen.Whybro 111
We took to Instagram to share our thoughts against the injustices we were facing in our daily lives, only to be met by thousands of people who felt the same way.” They found a community, and a safe space, to talk about their concerns and their anger, to open and amplify discussions about rape culture, birth control, sexuality - any issue that effects women and marginalizes communities – and they succeeded. “Online platforms have the ability to connect millions of people within seconds, this makes them one of the primary tools to convey the realities of all marginalized communities. While these marginalized sections are still mostly underrepresented in traditional media, social media encourages a more level playing field that amplifies their voices which have otherwise gone unheard… Social activists have been able to reach a wider audience and have taken this opportunity to normalise intersectional feminism and to spark unconventional conversations about sexism, racism, queernormativity, casteism, etcetera.” The discussions, the shared information, the testimonies around sexual assault that followed the news of Sarah Everard made it apparent that women should never have felt unsafe to begin with, more ‘Educate your son’ and less ‘Protect your daughter’. “This incident simply reminds us of how women are socialised from a young age to take certain precautions to protect themselves from unfortunate situations, but men are rarely taught to not be the perpetrators of these situations. It also reminds us of how when women are violated, more emphasis is laid on what they failed to do to protect themselves, and not on what men did to actively exploit them.
NO SAFETY=NO EQUALITY It was terrifying to read about Sarah’s death but what was worse was knowing that the system did all they could to silence the protests because these women were seen as a threat to their absolute authority.” 112
“WHEN WOMEN ARE VIOLATED, MORE EMPHASIS IS LAID ON WHAT THEY FAILED TOCHANGED DO... AND HOW COVID THE NOT BEAUTY WHAT MEN TOINTO ACTIVELY BOOM - ANDID INSIGHT 2020’S BEAUTY INDUSTRY THEM.” WITH EMMA CHIU EXPLOIT ‘Unprecedented times’ is the slogan of the decade that we are all growing to hate. The activism catalysed by Sarah’s death aimed to shake a barbaric and ancient culture that normalises an act that takes and ruins lives; activism that, in a great period of loss and loneliness, has helped some people to heal and others to be educated through newfound communities and better support. “It is not enough to bring individual perpetrators of rape and sexual violence to justice. Since the problem lies in a culture that is entertained by degrading acts and images of women, the solution is to look at the individual acts as a symptom of rape culture and solve it holistically.” Social Media and online activism have certainly been helpful in the case of this movement. Online organisations like, Everyone’s Invited and Gurls Talk meant victims were heard; for their own empowerment and relief, for a feeling of community and hope that these narratives can change and rape culture can be eradicated. Posts were shared to educate everyone, from friends of victims to the men who need to hold their friends accountable, petitions made to make public sexual harassment illegal and, funding pages created to provide for victims and the organisations that help them. “Activists have been compelled to rely on the online realm of social media to continue their advocacy. 2020 has proved that online activism is a viable and successful option, one that we will likely rely more on even when the pandemic ends. Online activism is wide-reaching, it takes various forms and makes it easier to raise awareness of causes and promote events.”

It’s unfortunate that it took the hardships of a pandemic to bring these deeprooted political injustices to the frontline, but with the continued awareness via social platforms, we’ve had time to reflect on ourselves, what we stand for, and what needs to change, but there is still a lot of work to do. Although social media is a quicker way of spreading awareness, it may not have adapted as many people’s mindsets and attitudes towards these injustices as we might think. Talks with Anya Dillard, Aria Sa’id and Fuck__ Patriarchy have shown that social media has, in no way, been the solution to these political injustices and will not end our systematic problems, but for the most part, it has been a small, and positive, step towards an even bigger journey to equality for these activists and victims - visible and hidden - who are helping to bring about discussion and awareness. Now without isolation we can hope to develop further, understand more, and become even better and more united, outside of our homes and screens. Despite performativity, the unchangeable minds of some, and the oppressive systems still in place, there is hope in a post-pandemic future but there is still so much to learn.
