HISTORY:
Do you have a youngster who’s just dying to show off their latest dance moves, perhaps compete at an elite level at regional and national competitions? Or maybe they’re a beginner and want to learn the basic concepts of their favorite dance? Well, now is their chance. Students of all ages and dance levels are welcome at Flatirons Dance Studio. The Arvada studio offers no-contract and no-registration fee classes and specializes in ballet, cheer/ poms, hip-hop, jazz, lyrical/ contemporary, tap, tumbling/ acrobatics and more.

We have the hardest most accepting set of kids. Flatirons Dance is a dance studio first and foremost. The number one goal is to teach kids how to dance. There are different tiers: the first is to participate in Flatirons’ shows, the second is community performance and the third is a competition team. Flatirons is different from other studios because it looks at these dancers for how they can be helped and not what they can do for teachers.

HISTORY: Morgan Brubaker, co-owner of Mod Mountain Boutique, completed her masters in fashion merchandising from Colorado State University in 2019. With a background in retail, she always dreamed of opening her own boutique. Brubaker visited her parents in Castle Rock while finishing her degree and loved the Riverwalk development. She sent her mother, Jayne Tien, also a co-owner, the link to a lease for their store the morning after seeing the development and asked if she wanted to open a women’s clothing boutique with her. Tien said “yes,” and the rest is history.

WHAT THEY DO: Treasures Thrift is a part of the Help and Hope Center, which supports people in Douglas and Elbert counties struggling from serious financial need or bordering on homelessness. The store’s proceeds directly help these individuals and families, providing them with food, clothing, household goods, rent, and utility assistance. They take donations of gently used items from the community to sell. Donation items can range from CDs to toys and clothing. They accept volunteers to help with the store in areas like cashiering and pricing. Volunteer forms can be found on the website under “Contact/Volunteer.”
HISTORY: The Help and Hope Center began in 1981 in a garage run by Mela Rudolph, the organization’s founder. Their food bank is now named, “Mela’s Pantry”. Jill’s Feed and Country Supply also sells high quality show standard feed, drawing customers from around the state of Colorado. Owner Jill Walkinshaw and her staff also aid and advise people raising livestock and horses. Walkinshaw has extensive experience working in veterinary clinics and has devoted her life to bettering the health of animals. In addition to livestock and horse supplies, the store also offers goods produced by local artisans. The store also hosts an annual plant sale around Mother’s Day to benefit the local Elbert County 4-H extension.

HISTORY: Before the store became Jill’s Feed and Country Supply, Frank Ibarra operated a feed store in the same location. Jill Walkinshaw worked for Ibarra for 10 years after which she worked at three other feed stores and then purchased the space. Originally wanting to name the store Meadowlark for the vibrant grassland bird, Walkinshaw decided on Jill’s Feed and Country Supply for the name recognition she had with the Elizabeth and Elbert County community. Walkinshaw’s feed store has been going strong for eight years.

WHAT THEY DO: Don’s Garage Doors has been doing garage door repair and installation since 1989. They are a brick-and-mortar business striving to treat garage doors like their own. Owner Don Szynskie believes in the importance of using his own employees for every job, which means customers never see subcontractors while working with them. In fact, it is not uncommon to get a visit from Szynskie himself. In addition to the Nextdoor brags of first-class and same-day service, Don’s Garage Doors is mostly known for being a broken spring replacement specialist. Szynskie believes providing this service is what drives the strong positive feedback from the community. Miners Alley Playhouse is an award-winning professional theater located in the heart of downtown Golden. It produce musicals, plays and children’s programming throughout the year. HISTORY: Miners Alley Playhouse began as the Morrison Theater Company in 1993, moving to Golden above the former Foss Drug Store and becoming Miners Alley Playhouse in 2003. Under new management in 2013, the theater has become the darling of the Denver theater community, serving more than 20,000 patrons a year.

WHAT THEY DO: Pambasos is a Mexican food truck that brings real authentic Mexican food to the west side of town. They have the best street tacos in town and cut their own carne asada. The Pambaso (the truck’s namesake) is the most authentic item on their menu – the recipe originated in Mexico City. It’s a sandwich dipped in enchilada sauce and grilled, so it has a crispy chili bun stuffed with a chorizo and potato hash topped with queso fresco, sour cream and lettuce. The truck is also known for their yummy breakfast burritos at The Golden Farmers Market in the summer. HISTORY: Pambasos opened in 2016 when it started serving food at the Golden Farmers Market. From there, they found their place at several breweries across town, including Golden City Brewery, Holidaily Brewing Company, and Bruz Beers. Gus, the Pambasos chef, has been cooking professionally for more than 15 years, starting when he was a teenager. He learned to cook with his mama in Mexico growing up. They both share a deep love for cooking and love working in the kitchen. Gus’s mom helps him in the kitchen often – she always makes the rice.

WHAT THEY DO: Casa Caliente provides authentic Mexican cuisine with recipes sourced from Monterrey, Mexico. There is also a fully stocked bar in the familyowned restaurant. The entire menu is made in house, minus two items, and the bar is packed with over 170 bottles of tequila and 35 bottles of whiskey and vodka. Every customer receives three types of salsa with homemade corn chips upon being seated at the restaurant. They serve many different food options, including fried jalapeno cream poppers, crispy chili rellenos and grilled casa fresca salad. Their menu also includes a section for house specialties like their Chili Verde plate.

“Getting to know all of the regulars has been an amazing experience for me and learning about all of the different tequilas and how they’re made. My husband and myself, we went to Mexico and blended two barrels of tequila, which was a huge experience for us.” — Sara Rasmussen, owner and bartender at Casa Caliente
Owners Sara and Tim Rasmussen opened Casa Caliente in December 2011. The idea struck Tim when he was eating dinner with Sara at a family-owned restaurant 30 minutes from their home. He noticed that a family from his children’s school was also eating there and figured if both families were willing to drive this far for a family-owned restaurant, then he should be able to create a thriving restaurant closer to their house. Sara began working as soon as they opened but started with office responsibilities. She became an expo and food runner after a few months and transitioned to part-time bartender. Sara now works as the main bartender and loves interacting with customers.

WHAT THEY DO: Wild Ginger serves traditional Thai cuisine with a cozy, neighborhood feel. They have many regulars who have been coming to the restaurant since it opened. Meals are served at the customer’s desired spice level of mild, medium, or hot. Pad Thai and drunken noodles are popular choices at the restaurant. Wild Ginger also specializes in kow soi, a northern style coconut curry with chicken and egg noodles.

“We’ve got a lot of regular customers that have been here since we opened. They still keep coming. Even they move and they’re still coming back.”
HISTORY: Somsak Damrongsang opened Wild Ginger about 25 years ago. A Thailand native, he brought traditional recipes to the restaurant located in Littleton. After COVID, Wild Ginger’s customers from offices nearby declined as people started working from home, but they are still busy on the weekends.

WHAT THEY DO: Urban Village Grill serves a contemporary take on Indian cuisine. The atmosphere provides casual fine dining for people to enjoy a laidback experience with this unique style of Indian food. The restaurant serves food on tabletop grills in a style similar to Korean barbeque. Unlike many restaurants, chefs walk to each table to interact with customers, creating a bridge between the back and front of the house. Chef Charlie Mani talks to every table to learn what they enjoyed and what needs to be changed to continuously improve the restaurant. The menu offers appetizers, meals from the clay oven and pot, freshly baked breads, sides, and dessert.

HISTORY: Mani came to the U.S. 18 years ago and noticed a negative stigma around Indian food. He thought Indian cuisine didn’t gain the recognition it deserved in America. Mani developed a new style of Indian food in New York for 12 years that he brought to his Lone Tree restaurant, which opened in 2021. He aims to create a healthier version of Indian food with a modern twist.

Who we are Independent Electrical Contractors Rocky Mountain (IECRM) is the largest IEC apprenticeship training program in the country and a trade association for the electrical contracting and renewable energy industry that prepares the next generation electrician for journeyworker licensure. WHAT THEY DO: Books Are Awesome is a local bookstore located in the heart of Parker. It was started by Wendy Withers in January 2020. The store is the size of a small house without the walls, with sticky notes scattered throughout the shelves of small blurbs about book recommendations written by some of the store’s most voracious readers. In addition to carrying over 11,000 titles in the store, patrons also have access to ordering books through its website and having them delivered to the store. Withers prides herself in having the best books of every genre on hand, with children’s books organized by the height of the reader. Books Are Awesome partners with local businesses and organizations in many ways, including providing required reading for students, hosting book clubs and selling products from local vendors.

Having opened the doors of Books Are Awesome just three months before the world shut down from the pandemic in 2020, owner Wendy Withers has always wanted to recreate her childhood experience of getting lost in bookstores in her own community. From patrons creating a newsletter, to hosting a book club for a women’s networking group, to hanging art on loan from the local art studio, Withers attributes the store’s success during the pandemic to support from the community and collaboration with local businesses.
