Volleyball Canada is moving its senior women’s program west from Winnipeg to the Richmond Oval starting in January . A decision that was two years in the making after BC put forth the best bid to host our country’s top female players. “Congratulations to the bid committee and we look forward to a successful partnership with Richmond moving forward” said Debra Armstrong , president of Volleyball Canada. “ It was a difficult decision for our committee with several quality bids. Thank you to all the groups that expressed interest in the training centre, and most importantly, I would like to acknowledge the years of service of the countless supporters in Winnipeg, which served as the hub for the team for a quarter century.”

The addition of our top female players into the volleyball fabric adds another important layer to an already impressive infrastructure in the Lower Mainland. The Oval is also home to a Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence, which has helped train more than 50 athletes who have played for their province, post-secondary school or the Junior National team. “I am excited to welcome the women’s team to the city of Richmond. We have a wold class training facility in a a vibrant city that will also serve the needs of the athletes off the court, said Tom Jones, co-chair of the bid committee and president of Volleyball BC “Having the centre here is also a natural extension of the hard work already being done in the area of athlete development, and we’re confident that we will provide an ideal environment for the team. This is a great opportunity to athletes realize their long-term dreams.” Inside the program, all national team hopefuls and coaches will have access to some of the best training facilities, medical/physio staff and technical support in the entire world. While outside the program, the BC Volleyball community at large will gain access to some great coaches and athletes. Their extensive expertise will be used to coach at camps, clinics and practices. A win – win for everyone involved in the game .

PLAYER SPORTLIGHT : SHANICE MARCELLE “Go Confidently In The Direction Of Your Dreams” Born in Toronto, but raised in Victoria --- Shanice Marcelle is as West coast as they come. A shining example of what the great game of volleyball has to offer young girls in the province of BC. Rising up through the club and high school ranks, Shanice took her game to a whole new level when she joined the T-Birds at UBC. That 5 year championship experience helped lay the foundation for a pro career in Europe and a spot on our national team. Currently nursing a sore shoulder, Shanice is working hard to rehab her injury in order to get back on the court with her teammates in Richmond. Having the opportunity to improve her game and grow the sport in her home province is a chance of a lifetime. Something she is ready to tackle head on as Canada works toward qualifying for the next Summer Olympic Games. A trip to Tokyo in 2020 would look awfully good on Shanice’s impressive volleyball resume below……
